Acting Chairman’s Report Many of you will know that I have been co opted by the Branch Committee as Caretaker/Acting Chairman for the immediate future, following Ross standing down due to his ill health. In accordance with the Branch Constitution a Special General Meeting has been called (see elsewhere) to elect a Branch Chairman until the next Annual General Meeting when nominations for all Branch Committee members will be called for. (Please note –that “the position of Chairman shall be open to any member of the Committee and any person who has served one full term on the Branch Committee.”) We are indebted to Ross for his many years of holding office in the Branch. He has been Secretary, Delegate and Chairman (serving these terms at several different times) and we thank him for this. Our thoughts and warm wishes are sent to him. At the last Branch Committee meeting (the first following our AGM) we welcomed Robyn Cox as our treasurer. The Branch Committee has co opted Graham Evans as Vintage Convenor. (Our thanks are given to Mike Milne for his time on the committee.) Graham is well used to committee work and will be an asset to us. Mark Drury has volunteered to be responsible for the Annual Vintage Rally this year and will liaise through Graham to the committee. Katryna Shaw has been elected as Club Captain after serving as a general member on the committee. The Motorcycle Section has appointed Paul Ainsworth as their representative on the Branch Committee. Welcome Robyn, Graham and Paul, we appreciate that you have made yourself available for these important tasks. The sub committee organising the Club’s Executive/AGM on behalf of the branch, has been beavering away to ensure its success. They invited me to their recent meeting and I was very pleased with what is planned. I am looking forward to seeing a good turnout from our members at the AGM on Saturday 14th August at the Rydges Hotel. It doesn’t cost anything to attend the meeting, but numbers are required (should you wish to partake) for the complimentary morning tea. (See last month’s Hub and Beaded Wheels for further information.) Members may also attend the Executive Meeting, but may not “speak” to the meeting. Please see Rod Thrower (our delegate) should you wish for an item to be brought up for discussion. Leigh 6
Secretary’s Report Well here we are, August all ready, Club AGM just two weeks away. ARE YOU ATTENDING – 9am Saturday 14 th August, Rydges Hotel, Latimer Sq. If not, are you volunteering over the weekend assisting with transport etc. Contact: Terry McQuinn 03 359 2557, Marilyn McKinlay 03 349 6951 Katryna Shaw 021 0277 2375 The two topics that should be of interest to all Branch Members are; 1: The notice of motion re the introduction of the facility for on-line membership. 2: The Rebranding of the Club with a new Logo. The first item is a no-brainer, in this day and age of “I want it now”. As secretary I can only see this as making my job a little easier and will I’m sure attract more of the younger generation via Face Book and other online services. Now Item 2: THE NEW LOGO I have been underwhelmed with email responses from our 1100 plus members. Thank you to those that have replied to my request not to phone or accost me in person, I have enjoyed reading your reasons, positive, negative, and in between comments. At this stage Canterbury have approximately 10 negative, 24 Positive and 6 semi positive that would like to make changes to what has been put to us. These figures include our joint members so I feel I have been shown a direction from a minority to present to the branch committee Canterbury’s overwhelming support for the new concept. If at this late stage you feel strongly either way you now have approx. 10 days to let me know by email, or you can attend the AGM and have your say. SEE YOU THERE. Rod

Club Captain’s Report
A big month ahead for the Vintage Car Club Canterbury Branch! Preparations are ongoing for our branch who is hosting the National AGM on the 13th, 14th and 15th of August. Numbers are coming through at a steady pace. We are still looking for people to take our guests with them on Friday’s rally. Friday Rally kajens70@gmail.com The BBQ on Sunday, after coffee and cars, currently has 70 people attending. If anyone is available to help in the kitchen with setting up and serving food, this would be greatly appreciated. BBQ help Katryna.shaw@pacificradiology.com
It would be wonderful for our members to show your support at the 75th Anniversary Dinner on the Saturday evening at the Rydges Latimer Hotel. The theme is simply Black and White. Entries for the National AGM Vintage Car Club Inc close 31 st July 2021. The VCCNZ National Daffodil Rally is on Sunday the 22nd September 2021. This is a worthy cause and from experience a fun day out!
Linda White is organising the women and young drivers rally this year and from what I understand she has in store for us will cater for both parties. The date for this is Saturday 4 th September 2021. Bring your rally gloves girls and boys. Keep warm and dry. Katryna Shaw

Commercial Report Thanks to Mark Drury for hosting the July Commercial Noggin. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it back from a flooded Westport in time to come along, but I am reliably informed that there was a good turnout and the invitation for partners was appreciated. There is a plan for the August Commercial noggin, but still with some details to be worked out, so please get in touch if you haven’t heard from me before the usual day to check what’s finally decided. Neil Shaskey Commercial Convenor.
A great day for the fire engine recommissioning: Mark Drury, Don Bennetts and Roy Adams looking pleased after a first engine start. 11

Veteran Report Another quiet month for veterans, given the time of year, so not a lot to report. The Veteran Car Club held their AGM on Saturday 24th July – a good turnout considering some of us were at Cutler Park to attend the memorial service for Evan Perrin. It was nice to see a number of Ford T’s present there, (including his ‘as found’ 1918 and recently completed 1920 Tourers). As mentioned last month, the Annual Veteran Rally date has been locked in as Sunday 26th September on the branch calendar, and planning is well in hand. The finish destination is the Racecourse Hill homestead. The run will start in Darfield, and maybe stop at another place of interest on the way. There is going to be an open day at the Homestead and our cars will be parked nearby as an added attraction, so with that and some fun field tests, it will be an interesting day. Entry forms are in this Hub (see Page 38) and of course on-line, so fill it in now while you remember. Other club eligible vehicles are welcome too, but won’t be able to take part in the field tests or be eligible for any of the awards. Other events to consider include the Daffodil Rally on Sunday 22nd August (see page 31) if we get reasonable weather, and the VCC display at the Hororata Highland Games on Saturday 6th November which Malcolm McGibbon is busy organising.
For those of us who also belong to the Veteran Car Club (and for Veteran owners who don’t) – there is a garage visit/noggin at our place (34 Rossington Drive, West Melton) from 7.00pm on Tuesday 10th August. Please bring your own preferred beverage unless you prefer OJ or soft drinks. Supper provided. In the meantime, enjoy your time tinkering in the shed. Regards Colin Hey (Veteran Convenor) 13

It was suggested by the meeting that 1.00pm would be better. Gill Stevenson suggested strong advertising to highlight the change of time next year. PRESENTATION: Presentation was then made to Kevin Sarjeant for Serving as Treasurer for the last six years. Thanks were given to Kevin Sarjeant for his Services to the Branch for the past 6 years to a round of applause. GENERAL BUSINESS: Jens Christensen raised the matter of the appointment of Alexander McPhail of Clark Boyce and It was Moved and seconded that we appoint the above subject to agreement from them. (Confirmation was received 23/06/21 filed with minutes.) Colin Rae raised matters regarding the costs and format of The Hub, suggested the magazine only be printed as a newsletter like it was during Covid no colour pages and only come out every two months. Treasurer replied this had all been taken into account and discussed though the year past at committee meetings. The final decision being what the committee decided was the wish of the majority that the magazine return to as near as possible to the way it was before covid, but with a cost for printing and postage copies for those that wished to receive it this way. Annette Meikle asked why the members who picked the magazine up at noggin had to pay for it. The Chairman and Secretary explained the reasons why this was just too time consuming to manage, to separate the printed and posted members. Tony Craythorne suggested maybe we should look at raising the levy. Colin suggested we trial it for six months. Leigh Craythorne suggested any saving from the two monthly productions would be probably taken up by more pages having to be printed. 26
No Motions were proposed or put to the floor, however the committee can discuss this matter further if it deems it necessary. Bruce McCormick raised matters regarding the discount offered to members on ferry crossing being a lot lower than those offered to Caravan Association members. It was pointed out that these discounts are negotiated by the Club Committee on behalf of the branch every year and with the club having approx. 8500 members in comparison to the caravan Club having approx. 80,000 members. Lyndsey Saunders raised the matter of there not being many rallies for PWV vehicles, like one a year. Roy Grainger supported this comment and said there needed to be more runs for this class. The Vice Captain advised there were very few if any dates left in the calendar apart from winter months. The OCBC convenor suggested that any members could organize a run to start at or after the OCBC mornings for their group if they wished. The Chairman and P Group convenor advised they would look into it and see what other opportunities were available. Leigh Craythorne raised the point that the AGM was the voice of the members, and their opportunity to raise issues that are important to them. The committee is appointed to act on decisions made by the meeting in accordance with the club rules. A letter was tabled from Pauline Croucher on the success of the Children’s Christmas Picnic (this would be published in the October Hub in conjunction with the notice for the 2021 Children’s Christmas Picnic. There being no further business, the meeting was closed at 3.13 pm. Signed ……………………………………..Chairman Date …………………………………….. 27
Motorcycle Report The days are getting longer, not long to wait for the warmer weather… Past Events. 10th – 11th July -Mid Winter Run. Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled. 14 July – Noggin. Held at The Bealey Hotel, Bealey Ave. A good turnout enjoyed the company of others in very convivial surroundings. 24th July – Fish & Chip Run. This was held in very fine, sunny conditions, even if a little cool. A good turnout of 15 or so riders, so I am told. The riders enjoyed a quiet amble into the countryside, stopping at the Leithfield Pub for lunch. Future Events 1st August – Round the Bays Run. Meet outside PMH Hospital, 10.15am for a 10.30 am departure. John Benn is organising. This is a “just turn up” event, no formal entry forms etc.
11th August – Motorcycle Noggin. Motorcycle Corner, Cutler Park, from 7.30 pm. The fire will be going. 22nd August – National Club Day – Daffodil Run raising money for Cancer Research. Please see elsewhere for details. 28th August – Fish & Chip Run. From this month onwards the place to meet and depart from will be changed to outside PMH Hospital on Cashmere Road. As usual, meet at 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. On the F&C runs, there does appear to be still some confusion about just when it is held. The run is on the 4th Saturday of the month. In most months this may be the last Saturday, but this year (2021) 4 of the months have 5 Saturdays. 8th September – Motorcycle Noggin. At this stage nothing formally organised so it will be at Motorcycle Corner or if freezing cold in the Barn. From 7.30 pm. 11th September – Motorcycle Skills Training. This is a carry-on from the very successful event that was held in May. More details on this later on, so look out for information to come via the email later on. 19th September – Reliability Trial Event. 10.00 am start, at Cutler Park, McLeans Island. On at the same time as the OCBC coffee morning, so hopefully 28
will provide some entertainment for the club membership at large. Other onemake motorcycle clubs are being contacted to solicit their attendance and participation. See elsewhere for more details. 25th September – Fish & Chip Run. Meet outside PMH 10.15 for a 10.30 am departure. I think that is about it for this month, Cheers, Chris
MOTORCYCLE RELIABILITY TRIAL Cutler Park 19th September 2021 Any ‘bike may enter, big or small. There will be set courses around cones. Two courses; one morning, one afternoon. A rider must duplicate their times. (It is not a speed test). The organisers are planning an enjoyable day out for all.
Please support this new event.
This early notification is at the organiser’s request as accommodation is at a premium during this period.

Daffodil Rally – Sunday 22nd August CALLING ALL MEMBERS – this is one event we’d really love to see you attend. As you will see on the flyer for this event on Page 30 there are four starting locations – Rangiora (for all of our North Canterbury members), New Brighton, Cashmere and Rolleston. Please note the new starting location for Cashmere – it’s been moved to Princess Margaret Hospital due to a tournament now happening at the Cashmere Club that weekend. All you need to do is arrive at one of the start locations between 10am and 10.30am on the morning of 22nd August. There you will be given instructions and set off on a route that will take you to Cutler Park. At each start location you can choose between a short and a long route (about 30 minutes or 1 hour approximately). There will also be barista coffee available to purchase at each start point. The event is completely open, so consider inviting friends and family along in their own car – people do not have to be VCC members nor do they need to be in (or on) a club eligible vehicle. Once at Cutler Park, the Avonhead Rotary Club will be there with hot food and drinks for sale (all proceeds going to the Cancer Society), and the clubrooms will also be open. You can bring your own lunch if you prefer. All of the cars will be on display, so you can mix and mingle and enjoy the early part of the afternoon until we have a short prizegiving which will be no later than 2.00pm. A special information and donation web page has now been set up for the event - the web address is: https://www.daffodilday.org.nz/vintagecarclub Now, a word about donations. You have 3 Options: 1) As you arrive at Cutler Park you can make a cash donation to the Cancer
31
Society as you arrive – this money will be passed on directly to them. Please be generous – this run is also organised for your enjoyment. 2) Alternatively, each set of instructions will have a QR code on it, which you can scan with your smart phone (if you have one), which will provide you with the on-line site where you can make a donation of your choice directly to the Cancer Society. Upon making the donation, you will be sent an email receipt, which you can show when you arrive at Cutler Park. 3) Before the event, you can log onto the Cancer Society/VCC event webpage (as above) and make your donation. Again, please print your receipt or show it on your phone as you arrive at Cutler Park. 4) Given that all 65-year-old plus members should have had their COVID jabs by 22nd August, it is expected that the Government will have by then activated the WWY (We’re Watching You) microchips that you unknowingly received in your jabs. Given this, we’re going to take delivery of a DYB (Download Your Brain) scanner in time for the event, and scan your forehead as you arrive at Cutler Park. This will automatically deduct $20 from your pension and send it straight to the Cancer Society. In all seriousness, this will be a great event to take part in, and I’d really encourage you to take part and enjoy the event for this very worthy cause. Cancer is a merciless disease which will touch us or our loved ones in some way during our lives, so here’s your chance to do your bit. Our aim is to raise at least $5,000 on behalf of the Canterbury Branch, which is the target you will see set up on the web page. Using one of the two technology options will rely to some extent on your honesty – please respect that and do the right thing for the Cancer Society. By the way, the event will be on, wet or fine. Oh, and yes, there are only 3 options for payment, in case you’re still worried about Option 4! Have fun on the day – see you there! Colin Hey

Winter Run Report Organised by Dave and Pam Dacombe, this year’s Winter Run was held on Sunday 18th July. Both the start point and finish destination was our very own Cutler Park – ideal, because it coincided with our regular OCBC (Old Cars, Bike and Coffee) meeting for the start, and finished at the Barn where we could enjoy our lunch with a nice warm fire going. As has been mentioned elsewhere, OCBC mustered another great turnout, especially considering it was the middle of winter. Unfortunately, although it was warmish for us on our side of the southern Alps, but Westport and Marlborough were underwater! OCBC proved a perfect start-point for the run, not only because there was a coffee van there, but because there were a lot of people and cars there – probably three or four times the number of cars that came on the run. A great opportunity to mix and mingle before the run got underway. As we were handed out our instructions soon after 10.30, I overheard one member (who at that time I didn’t know) ask if the instructions were difficult, because he was by himself. I was also by myself, so I offered to navigate for him, which he readily accepted. It turned out to be Alec Marshall, who joined our Branch as a new member three months ago. He has a 1932 Alvis sedan in very original condition, which many years ago was his father’s car, so as we made our way along the plotted route, I was able to learn a lot about the car, and get to know Alec at the same time. The car was bought by his father in 1958, and it was used as the family car in England for two years until it broke down with magneto trouble. Alec’s father attempted to repair it, but gave up and parked the car in a garage, where it had remained for all of 60 or so years, until very recently. Alec migrated to NZ many, many years ago to pursue his career in medicine, but finally the time came where it was necessary to deal with the old car back in the UK. He decided to have it sent to NZ, and then had to deal with the logistics of getting it here. He commissioned a mechanic back in the UK to get the car running again so it could be shipped back, and then once 33
here, he sent it to Auto Restorations to look after making it roadworthy and to get it through compliance and registration. It’s now roadworthy and there is still work to be done, but it’s an original car with much of its original paint and leather interior, so Alec’s preference is just to get it looking respectable and to ensure it is reliable, without destroying the originality. The run took us west from McLeans Island, through Weedons and onto the new southern motorway at Weedons Ross Road. From there we went into town via Gasson Street, then north through Avonside, Burwood and Marshland, before returning to Cutler Park on the new Northern Corridor and through Northcote. It was interesting to see how out-of-place vehicles like Model A and T Fords look on the new motorways, the good thing being there is plenty of visibility and room for overtaking traffic (or to be precise ‘being overtaken’). It was also good to see a number of motorists and pedestrians giving us the thumbs-up or waving as they went past. On arrival back at the Barn, the fire was roaring, and the room was full of happy people enjoying their lunch. All up an enjoyable day – what else is there better to do on a cold winter’s day? Thanks David and Pam for a good run with clear and correct instructions, and thanks Alec too for the ride. Colin Hey

Swap Meet
It’s all systems go for Swap Meet. Our borders are safe (we hope), food vendors have been booked in, the loos have been ordered, the ground markings have been checked, and almost all of the sites have been sold – what more could a swap meet enthusiast want? At Noggin this month we will have the small signs available for collection – if you can take one or more and put them up somewhere in your neighbourhood, it would be a great help. Also, if you are at Noggin, please check the roster sheets. If your name is already there, please check that your allocated time is still OK, and if it’s not please change your time, or see me if you’ve had a change of plans. If your name is not there, please find a job you would like to do and a time that suits you and add your name. There is nothing arduous or difficult to do, all we require is an hour or so of your time over the whole weekend. At the September and October Noggins we will have weekend passes available to purchase. Remember that entry is $5 per day, or you can buy a three-day/weekend pass (wrist-band) for $10 and just show it at the gate as you come through. Colin Hey Chairman Swap Meet Committee.
