CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Regretfully, we have accepted Owen Genet’s resignation as our Branch Librarian. Owen (and Kay Shaskey, as his assistant) took over the position from Trevor Lightfoot in August 1979 and has given 42 years of loyal service to the Branch in this capacity. He is always happy to give members assistance and knows the library set-out by heart enabling him to point us in the right direction for our reading or research. Cataloguing and sorting magazines or books as well as all the important tasks that the extensive library that the Branch enjoys, has been an ongoing task for him and Kay. He would have seen many changes in the library over these years (the most obvious one is computerizing all the books and records held) and his quiet friendly involvement in this vital part of our Branch will be greatly missed. His late wife Connie also worked hard in the library background and was responsible for binding the old Hubs so that they can be easily accessed. Thank you Owen for all the unsung valuable work you have given the Branch over all these years.
Over Show Weekend, the Garden City Rodders Group used our branch facilities (through our branch member John Ackroyd) for their 50th anniversary celebrations. Our thanks for overseeing the weekend to Rod Thrower, Colin Hey and Gill Stevenson, as well as the group of Gill’s hardworking motorcyclist friends who supported her in the bar for the weekend. See Gill’s report elsewhere. The Branch committee and I continue to monitor the COVID-19 requirements in order to give a Duty of Care to our members. Thank you to all of you who have had your two vaccinations, are sanitizing your hands frequently and wear your mask (when appropriate) to keep your fellow members, our families and of course yourself as safe as possible. I wish you and yours all the very best over the Festive Season. Leigh

SECRETARY’S REPORT Hi All, By the time you read this I will be back in Christchurch. Back to business as usual, see you at the noggin. By all accounts the new kitchen has lived up to our expectations with a few minor alterations required here and there. Onward and upward. No more spending large amounts until we can be assured on a swap meet return. Cheers Rod

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT This month has been a busy month starting with a successful Awards Dinner organised by Leigh Craythorne. 94 tickets sold, beautiful food and great company. At the dinner people came up to me and commented on how much they enjoyed the Annual Vintage Run that Graham Evans organised. It was a pleasure to hear that people had emailed him with thanks for a job well done! Dave Inwood tells me that the Show Weekend tour was great! There was a little bit of rain but all good. Thanks, Dave, for taking the time to arrange this popular event. Last Sunday was the Homestead run which started after Old Bikes, Coffee and Cars. We headed out Leeston/Brookside way. This was the first ever Homestead Run that I had been on that we were welcomed inside the house to see its amazing history and what had been brought into the 21st century. Ladies, it was just like a “House and Garden” tour. Down the road we went to the Brookside Church and Grave Yard where we had a talk from the local historian who also tickled the ivory keys of the church organ! Thank you Colin Hey for organising this treat. Things to look forward to this month are: Noggin - Thursday 2nd December – Christmas Cake from Father Christmas Christmas Social Friday 10th December 2021 – Leigh Craythorne Boxing Day Run – 26th December 2021 – Don and Judy Bennetts Motorcycle New Year Run - 2nd January 2022 – Paul Ainsworth Picnic Run – 9th January 2022 – John Kuipers

Swap Meet Report Hopefully by now, everyone would have read the events update issued two weeks ago to announce the full cancellation of Swap Meet 2021. Discussion with the main committee established that with no major financial commitments this coming year, the branch can go one more year without a swap meet, remembering however that this is our one and only fundraising event each year. The swap meet committee therefore made the decision to cancel this year's event and begin to plan for the 2022 event at the usual dates, which will be 7th - 9th October 2022. A regrettable decision, but there are still too many unknowns and resourcing issues to be able to consider postponing the event again to February. We thank all members who offered their time and assistance for this year's event. Colin Hey Swap Meet Chairman
Ross Butler Members and friends of Ross are invited to honour his memory at an afternoon in the Main Hall Cutler Park. Sunday 12th December 1.30pm 9

VETERAN REPORT Lots of veteran activity this last month, having attended the National Veteran Rally in Cromwell and then the Pioneer Motoring Group run in Clyde two weeks later. Jenny and I trailered our 1909 Wolseley Siddeley to Cromwell, and left it locked up in the VCC compound for the two weeks so we didn’t have to take it back home again between times. Both events were extremely enjoyable, and we were glad we went. The National Veteran Rally attracted 46 entrants, including 5 motorcycles. Our Saturday run involved a long run north of Cromwell on SH8 towards Tarras, where we finished at a farm belonging to a VCC member with a shed full of MGs and other interesting buildings on the property. Running into a strong north-west wind all the way up there was a challenge for some of the lower-powered cars and bikes, but we were rewarded with a very easy run home in the afternoon which saw most of us literally blown back to Cromwell, even on the slightly uphill sections. A sunny and warm day with lake views most of the way certainly added to the enjoyment, enhanced even more by a great lunch and a hugely friendly bunch of veteran enthusiasts to enjoy the day with. That afternoon we were free to visit a few places of interest – we went to see the workshop belonging to John Martin (the rally chairman) who has a business building wooden body frames and steering wheels, to check out his projects. A social gathering that evening was held in Cromwell, with plenty of time to socialise and chat about family, and of course veteran cars, parts and projects! On Sunday morning we gathered again at the clubrooms, and then departed to the Highlands Motorsport Park where all of the cars and bikes were parked in the visitor’s park after some brief field tests. Although we were not able to do a lap or two of the circuit (not much point in a veteran car, I guess), the museum and café were open, and other attractions were all operating as well. If you’re a
11
petrol-head at heart, it’s a great place to spend some time. From there we drove down into the Cromwell historic precinct where the cars were put on display, and we were able to enjoy our lunch and then take in some of the history of the area. The prizegiving and closing dinner were held that night. It was great to see our branch featuring in the awards, including the concours trophy and entrant’s choice trophy being presented to Bruce & Shirley Shadbolt for their 1904 L’Etoile, and overall winner’s trophy going to Graeme Sword who rode his 1914 Triumph on the event. A great effort! All up a great event, and congratulations are due to the Central Otago branch for pulling it all together and making it work in such difficult times. Rumour has it that next year’s National Veteran Rally may be in Blenheim. After the rally 12 of the cars (including Bevars and Lois Binnie in their 1914 Hupmobile) successfully completed the Prince Henry Tour, which ran into Central Otago over the next 3 days. Reports suggest that this was a most enjoyable event too Two weeks later we headed down to Clyde for the biennial Pioneer Motoring Group rally – an event organised by Stephen & Helen Kidd from Otago exclusively for one and two-cylinder veterans, and attended by more than 20 vehicles and one motorcycle. The event began with a meet and greet at the Old Post Office in Clyde on the Friday evening, which set the scene for what was to be a thoroughly enjoyable weekend of social gatherings with some excellent veteran motoring thrown in. Saturday morning dawned quite wet, but it did stop raining long enough for those of us with open cars (most of us) to decide we weren’t going to be put off the run. After gathering at the old railway station, we set off on a run of about 1 hour towards Alexandra on the west side of the Clutha River, with some side-trips up into the orchard areas running off Earnscleugh Road. We then got a bit wet for the last 15 minutes or so as we headed to the rowing club clubrooms for lunch on the northern side of the Clyde Dam, but spirits were high (some even served up) as we enjoyed lunch 12
together. Returning into Clyde, we enjoyed more socialising back at the motel and then at dinner that evening. Sunday’s run was a 20km overland trip to Galloway, bypassing Alexandra in favour of the short and sharp climb up the hill on Springvale Road to then enjoy the long gradual downhill run down Letts Gully Road. We then crossed SH65 to carry on to the old Galloway school building (now a community hall) for a lunch lovingly prepared by the hall committee. Once again the rain held off, and with no wind to speak of it was pleasant motoring through picturesque countryside all the way. Even a bit of mud to drive through in the last 200m to make it look like we’d actually done some pioneer motoring! We returned to Clyde via Alexandra, keeping to the back roads to stay away from the traffic (which was very light anyway). A fabulous dinner to conclude the event was held that night at the Orchard Garden Function Centre (just out of Clyde), where it was decided that we’d reconvene in 18 months’ time to enjoy the autumn colours in the valley. Allan Familton and Lesley Colsell were presented with the rally trophy – their 1910 Stanley steamer was appreciated by everyone as it silently whisked passed most of us at some point on the runs, leaving its impressive signature steam trail billowing out of its rear end as it disappeared into the distance. Coming up, we have both the Boxing Day run and the Picnic run in January to look forward to. Both of these events will be suitable for veteran vehicles, so do consider bringing them along on the day. For those taking veterans to New Plymouth for the Vero Rally, do enjoy yourself – I hope you have trouble-fee and enjoyable motoring. I have to confess that Jenny and I have booked to go there, but we’re taking something a bit more modern – our 1933 Wolseley Hornet Special. Colin Hey 13

VCC Annual Vintage Rally. 6th November 2021 The rally, a perfect day, started in Halswell at Roy Grainger’s with 56 entries, we started the entries away at 30 second intervals on the Time Trial section towards Tai Tapu, from there to bypass Coes Ford through to Burnham and across the Main South Road to turn off on to Telegraph Road arriving at Greendale Domain for Field Tests and lunch. Afternoon run on to Matts Mini Museum in Darfield then on to Kirwee before driving down the Old West Coast Road, arriving at NZ Vintage Machinery club rooms where we were treated to a lovely afternoon tea turned on by Myra Saunders and her helpers. A highlight being the tractor rides around the grounds. A big thankyou to Lyndsey Saunders, Mark Drury, Roy Grainger, Anne Evans, Philip Sutcliffe, Kevin Mercer, John Olliver and David Dacombe for their help. The Vintage Rally
Saturday 6th November 2021
Report from Trevor Lightfoot
56 Vintage cars! Wow! That is definitely an achievement and quite a sight. Also quite an achievement, for the writer, as I worked long and hard on my 1930 Standard 6 replacing the RH king pin bushes and replacing the worn stub axle assy with another unworn one. Then a traumatic WOF and Paterson’s Tyres carried out a wheel alignment and a tyre fit. I must admit I would rather drive the car than have to fix it but it certainly steers better! I just proved, once again, I would make a better blacksmith than an engineer but the end result is the same but, not quite so pretty. The Rally started at Roy and Shirley Grainger’s magic property where we were allowed to wander his sheds admiring his collection of many vehicles and of course chew the fat with the entrants. I decided his superb restoration of the Diamond T Truck was the most intriguing vehicle as was a completely original fairly light horse drawn 4 wheeled dray/ cart /with solid rubber tyred quite small wooden spoked wheels along with its original flaky grey paint . Of the many entrant’s Vintage Cars I admired, I mention just a few- a 1922 Fiat 500 tourer with its original Christchurch built polished aluminium tourer body, a very early Lagonda Tourer long before their sports cars came along, the red Ansaldo Tourer and the perpendicular Austin 16/6 Saloon. We started off through various country roads including two of my favourites –The Old Tai Tapu Road and River Road eventually 15
passing the road to Coes Ford. Then towards Burnham on many roads to head to Greendale to another of those hidden country gems -The Greendale Reserve (Domain.) All this on very interesting roads through very green countryside. As I got there pretty early I was the guinea pig to try out their field tests and failed them all. Quite an achievement! We all sat round the Domain in various relaxed groups having our picnic lunch-spent more time laughing than eating! After lunch, off to Darfield to a small eclectic private museum with two asthmatic stationary engines wheezing away and a fascinating collection of anything and everything .Quite my idea of heaven, definitely not Wendy’s! After that through Kirwee and onto the NZ Vintage Machinery Club Grounds just along from our VCC grounds where, amongst other exhibits, was a new shed devoted to the MV Tuhoe which was wrecked on the Waimakariri Sand Bar a few years ago. They have the wheel house and funnel, one of its damaged early American diesel main engines, the other one is being restored at the present time. Also the vessel’s petrol engine powered winch and its similar powered large generator and other bits and bobs.. Here we were served a very pleasant afternoon tea organised by Myra Saunders and her helpers. In another shed was a very very large late 1920’s Hart Parr Tractor belonging to the late Malcolm Gibbs, who was a VCC member and the hernia inducing ( my opinion) little grey tractor that Arthur Hunter used to drive / ride many years ago. Great Rally –Wonderful weather-Great comradeshipInteresting double declutching exercise for most of us –Pleasant and interesting roads –Just a very pleasant day out Thank you to Graham Evans our new Vintage Convener 16

Bar Report October and November have been busy months for the bar. There has been the usual two Noggins, a wedding, the Awards Dinner and then hosting Garden City Rodders for Show weekend. Thankyou to all who assisted in the running of the bar for these events. This has seen a good return to the coffers and the Garden City Rodders have certainly made a good contribution to our funds. The wedding held in the Hall in October gave our Hall a very polished look showing it can scrub up well when called upon and the good weather at Show weekend for the Hot Rod celebration ensured there was excellent use of the beer garden. Gill Stevenson Garden City Rodders 50th Anniversary. This was held at Cutler Park following an agreement for them to hire our facilities in their entirety for the weekend from Thursday through to Sunday afternoons inclusively. This event has raised invaluable funds for our club at a time when swap meet has had to be cancelled again due to Covid 19. They made use of The Barn for their general socialising and their registration point. The Main Hall was used for their function centre, for breakfast and evening events including 140 guests for their prize giving dinner. During the weekend there was a daily run to a venue of interest, returning each afternoon to the Club Grounds, and the bar opening from 5pm. A large number of attendees camped on site and the bar facilities were well patronized and the beer garden utilised to its fullest potential due to the very warm evenings. It was a great opportunity to spend some time with fellow motoring enthusiasts with a slightly different view of a “great car”. This was an extremely well organized event and our facilities were left in an immaculate manner. The group were an absolute pleasure to host and they certainly appreciated our magnificent facilities with many compliments being made on the venue, our friendliness, and helpfulness and even the lovely floral display in 18
the ladies toilets. A big thank you to the VCC team who made this all run so smoothly, Colin Hey, Ian and Marilyn McKinlay, Jan and Royce Baker, Kevin and Shona Clarkson, Phil and Marietta Jeeves, Katryna and Bryce Shaw, Jim Miles and Kevin and Gill Stevenson. And to John Ackroyd who ensured that the Hot Rodders all respected our facilities and abided by all our rules. Thanks also goes to all the attendees.

Hi to you all
9-90s
The GraIngers, Roy and Shirley, organised this day. It couldn't have been better. The weather was perfect, 40 odd cars and a nice little route. The first stop was at Roy's brother's place. We were there years ago and you wouldn't believe what he has done to his property since. The gardens are just beautiful. The next thing to perfect and to finish it off homemade scones with butter and raspberry jam and homemade shortbread. A big thank you Brian and Jill. A lot of people went home with garden ornaments made by Brian. Next stop was Roy and Shirley's place. What can I say? Another beautiful garden, a perfect place to have lunch and garages with cars to drool over. One thing I have to say. These Graingers like to work! I looked at those beautiful gardens and thought to myself "How do they do it?" Roy and Brian, Shirley and Jill, a big thank you from all the 9-90s. You gave us a day to remember. We had a good raffle and we are a little over booked for the Christmas lunch. This year Nurse Maud received a donation of $260.00 from the 9-90s. 2022 February 9 The Meikles. We will meet at the VCC grounds at 9.55am and please bring your old cars out and leave the modern cars at home if possible. Either way we want you to come. The team and I wish all our friends and enemies a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Regards, J K
From Banks Peninsula Branch As long as Covid doesn't intervene, the New Year’s Day picnic will be on as usual at the Little River domain from 11.00am. There will be a gold coin donation at the gate to help pay for the band. We will also need to sign or scan in at the gate. There will be a lolly scramble for the kids. The entrance for the domain is off Western Valley Road next to the fire station. Craig Keenan 20

LIBRARY REPORT Just a note to say a big thank you to all the members, and members' families who have donated books and magazines over the past year to the branch library. These donations are always appreciated, even if we are getting a bit short on space these days. I also have to advise that the librarian, Owen Genet, has retired from this position, after over 40 years service. I would like to personally thank Owen for all the work he has done during this time, we spent a lot of time over the years working in the library, and his knowledge of the books and where to find them has helped countless members find the information they were seeking. This knowledge will be missed. Best wishes for the future, Owen. So, if there a member out there who would like to be involved with the library, and help out, please give me or Leigh a call. Kay Shaskey

Motorcycle Annual Rally Report Forty-three riders, passengers and pillions assembled at Cutler Park for the Annual Motorcycle Rally. The day started a bit cool but as it progressed it warmed up nicely. There were two routes available and we chose to do the long run. My riding companions were Honk, Dave and Johnny - all Triumph-mounted, might I add! Fortunately the organisers told us they had left out instruction number two in the briefing so we confidently set off towards North Canterbury. The ride took us out through Belfast, Ohoka, Cust, Ashley Gorge, Sefton and onto Balcairn for the lunch stop and field trials. Here we viewed an amazing collection of motorcycles, mostly classic Japanese models, and had a delicious lunch organised by Royce and Jan - many thanks to you both. Kurt, Royce, Joe and Graham had set out the field trials, which were hotly contested. After these it was a time trial back to Ashley to wash down the dust encountered on all the gravel roads we had travelled along in the morning. It was good to see all the multis: Yamaha, Indian, Henderson and Triumphs. Many thanks to Barry Townshend and Roy Grainger for backup duties, which I believe weren't required.
We enjoyed an excellent after match function and prize giving that evening at Bikers’ Corner, with way too much good food on offer. Finally, a big thanks to Paul and Joss, and Mike and Heather, for their part in organising an excellent event. Roger Abel (Photos from the Rally on the Website-Ed) 26

The Shock of Winning the National Veteran Rally 2021 From Graeme Sword.
As the overall winner for this Rally it was something that I would never have thought would ever happen to me on my 1914 baby Triumph. This has turned a not so good year for me health wise into one of the best ways to end a year after not being able to attend most of our rallies due to not being able to drive for some time, then not knowing whether I was able to get the ok to ride the bike until two weeks before the Rally. This was only the second time that the Triumph had been out since the Gore Veteran Rally last November and it never missed a beat for the whole weekend. I really enjoyed the Rally, nice people, good roads, very little traffic, good weather and very well organised events, there’s no better way to spend a weekend with all the other entrants who all enjoy using their very nice 100 plus year old vehicles. The display on the Sunday afternoon was an impressive sight for the public and our members to enjoy the display in front of all the old buildings in the Cromwell’s Heritage Precinct overlooking the lake. This is where we had to find photos of different points of interest and put them onto a map as part of the rally test. Everyone all joined in, all walking around with their maps looking kind of lost and all in their period costumes in keeping with their vehicles which really made the day. Sunday Prize-giving dinner where our branch members received three of the Trophies; Bruce & Shirley Shadbolt in their beautifully restored 1904 L’Etoile 8hp getting two, the Conlon Trophy (concourse winner) and the William McLean Trophy (Entrants Choice) and myself getting the Ian Mclean Trophy ( Overall Winner). A big thank-you must go to the Central Otago Branch of the Vintage Car Club Inc. and its members for a lovely weekend. (Those of us who have witnessed Graeme’s heroic efforts on this little
machine over many years know that the award was well deserved. Ed) 28
Homestead Run Report
This year’s event almost became another cancellation casualty for a couple of reasons, but in the end it was decided by the committee that we should attempt to pull it together in some form, especially considering it’s one of the most popular annual runs the branch runs. After some late-in-the-piece organising, assisted with some great help from Les Sloan from Leeston, the event came together well, and proved to be very successful and I think was enjoyed by everyone who took part. This year the run was organised around the monthly Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee (OCBC) on 21st November, with this being both the start point for the run, and also where the registrations were taken. This worked very well, and also meant a very large gathering of vehicles at Cutler Park for OCBC, where the day could begin with a coffee and a chat, and a chance to have a look at what turned up there. By 10.30am around 70 cars had been registered for the run. The run got away from Cutler Park at 10.45, with instructions given out there to take everyone on a bit of scenic run that finished at Osborne Park in Doyleston, passing through West Melton, Rolleston and Springston and Coes Ford on the way. Fortunately no-one got lost, although the odd person diverting to a cafe on the way apparently caused a bit of chaos to following vehicles! Usual story – read your instructions, don’t follow the car in front! Even with the weather looking a bit threatening and dispensing a few droplets of rain, everyone got through their picnic lunch at Osborne Park OK, with several large groups of picnickers forming under the trees and alongside a large hedge in the domain. Fortunately it remained warm, and the showers soon disappeared. At 1.00pm it was time to head to the next stop, Waterside Homestead, just 4km down the road from Osborne Park. Here we were able to park all of the vintage and 1 veteran vehicles directly outside the homestead, with the remainder being 29
parked in the adjacent yard outside the woolshed and outbuildings, We were met there by the owners, Richard and Charlotte Lemon, who were genuinely impressed with the visiting cars and large number of people. After waiting a few minutes for everyone to assemble, Richard gave us a talk about the history of the homestead, which was built by his great, great grandfather in the 1880s, and has been in his family ever since. Like many of the homesteads in the area, it was very badly damaged especially in the 2010 earthquake, with the one remaining chimney collapsing and destroying the interior of half of the homestead as it fell down. It then took several years for the repair to happen, with some sympathetic modernisation being done along the way. Interestingly, the remnants of the original settlers’ cottage still survive adjacent to the homestead. In an unusual and generous gesture, Richard and Charlotte were more than happy for anyone who wanted to go inside and see the restored interior – they have done a wonderful job and paid particular attention to retaining the historical features wherever possible. We offered our thanks and presented them with a token of our appreciation for hosting our group there. Our next and last stop for the day was to the St Lukes church in the Brookside, but on the way the run took everyone through the back of the Doyleston village, where the remaining features of the old Leeston railway line and some of the original settler’s cottages are still evident. At St Lukes we were met by Wendy Dalley, a former resident of the Brookside area and a member of the Ellesmere Historical Society. Wendy had opened up the church (which is still used for two services every second Sunday), and once we’d all assembled there, she gave us a really informative talk about the history of the area, mentioning not only the church, but some of the remaining early buildings that still remain nearby. Now mainly just a farming area, it was difficult to imaging it being a thriving community with a school (the building still survives but is now a private home) of 60 children in the 1880s. By now it was 3.00pm, and after thanking Wendy and passing on our appreciation, some departed for home, whilst others enjoyed their afternoon tea under the trees opposite the church. All up a very enjoyable day out, hopefully leaving everyone a little bit more knowledgeable about the people and buildings that form part of our recent history. Colin Hey 30

Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee (OCBC)
This is our last OCBC for 2021, so your last opportunity to give your chosen vehicle a brief run (depending of course on how far away from Cutler Park you live) and come out and enjoy mixing informally with other members under what by then will be the new “Traffic Light” system. This final OCBC date will also be the same date for the Children’s Christmas Party, so once again a good turnout should result. A special invitation is extended to the owners of our veteran and vintage vehicles – we would like to be able to offer rides to the children around the grounds as part of their big day, so if you and your vehicle are willing and able, please come out and join us. Bring your picnic lunch too. Santa hats for drivers will be completely optional – we might even be able to offer you a free candy floss? There will be an OCBC in January, so mark the date (16th January) in your diary now. Have a good Christmas everybody! Colin Hey

2021 AWARDS DINNER Canterbury Branch had much pleasure in hosting Jack Blyth, John Coomber, Michael Lavender and Debbie Butler (who received Ross’ award) along with their wives/partners, on Sunday 7th November at the clubrooms, when they were presented with their 50-year badges and certificates by National President Diane Quarrie. (John Hastilow was presented with his award at Cromwell, where he was attending the National Veteran Rally which coincided with our dinner.) Eight 35-year badges were also presented. (See photographs on next page). Their families, friends and fellow members joined them on their special night (under COVID-19 level 2 guidelines). Michael Lavender had 4 generations of family supporting him at the dinner, which was catered by our very own Annette and Lyndsey Painter, who provided their usual high standard of food (with plenty of it.) We were pleased that Diane and Geoff Quarrie were able to join, us as we know that COVID-19 has made many arrangements difficult to coordinate. The tables were decorated with candles in their gold holders, gold serviettes and the beautiful floral arrangements on the top table and clubroom foyer were arranged by Ngaio Lott (Esme Humm’s sister.) We were very grateful to Ngaio for filling in so willingly due to Esme’s accident. Ngaio also made the posies of flowers presented to the 50-year awardees wives/partners and to Diane Quarrie. Thanks are recorded to the two wine waiters (Mark Drury and Peter May) who looked after our special guests and also the bar staff – Amanda and Wayne Franklin, who competently served us all. This year 94 people sat down to dinner, and it was a bitter sweet night for us, as Annette and Lyndsey have decided to retire after a number of years catering for us and this was to be their last Award Dinner. We wish them well in their well-deserved retirement.

VOG REPORT Velosolex Owners Group
November 2021 run Tuesday 9th
We were promised a 19 degree day with cloud on the 9th no mention of rain but what happened drizzle was in the air but this didn’t deter 17 enthusiastic riders “Love was in the air” for them (so said the song by John Paul Young in 1978) as they headed out on an adventure to points unknown for some. A route had been mapped out by our VOG members Tony & Chris White starting from the carpark at the Halswell Library and Community Centre buildings and taking us around the cycle tracks known as the “Quarryman’s Trail” along Sparks Rd and to enter into the “Heathcote River Wetlands” . Tony had warned us to watch out for young mums with prams and dogs but fortunately we were unable to terrorise any of these on the day, due to the damper conditions there were none to be seen. It was a stop start route with plenty of crossing lights making it safe for us old VOGers to cross the roads, also a good chance for the tail enders to catch up and thus not losing any of our riders which can be a problem sometimes. The slow leisurely pace that we amble along at certainly gives one the opportunity to view all the new subdivisions that are speeding ahead in the Halswell area, gosh quiet ole Sparks Rd that I knew as a lad in the 50’s & 60’s has long gone. The circuitous route along these trails through Addington, Spreydon & Middleton eventually took us into the Wigram Skies area, and into the shopping precinct known as “The Landing” where we stopped off at the “Good Home Gastropub” to satisfy 38
our rumbly tummies and a chance for a photo shoot for the memoirs album. A short run in the afternoon once again on cycleways took us back to our cars. But this was not without incident – our leader Tony unfortunately got a flatty in his front tyre and being afraid of having to go on the backup trailer and “winning” the Hardluck Trophy Tony carried on flatty and all making it rather tricky for a stable ride when turning corners. All this bravery didn’t mean a jot to VOG 1 when it came to the end of the run debrief and prize giving. There being no other misdemeanours or breakdowns on the run Tony certainly had to be the prime recipient of the award. Another fantastic day out and a great turnout of our loyal members. Thanks Tony & Chris for organising. Royce VOG 1
