CHAIRMAN’S REPORT I hope you all have had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year’s break. December saw opportunities to meet up in a number of branch social events – the Christmas Noggin, informal Christmas Social, Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee, Children’s Christmas Picnic and the Boxing Day picnic. The informal Christmas Social was a success and hopefully will once again be on our branch calendar. The Children’s Christmas Picnic was back at Cutler Park again and I received positive comments following this. Many thanks are given to my family and the non-committee members who supported me on the day to ensure that the children could enjoy a traditional Christmas picnic. The Boxing Day picnic at Ouruhia Domain was a relaxing day with family and friends and thanks are given to Judy and Don Bennetts for organizing this. I have enjoyed the photographs from the Vero Rally posted on Facebook and look forward to hearing about the attendees’ adventures. It sounds as though it was a successful event following the hard work put in by Greg Terrill and his rally committee. Have you sent Rod your vote for or against the proposed change of our club’s logo? It is important that you do so. With Omicron in our midst and once again living under the red traffic light system, it is more than ever important that we abide by the rules. This month’s noggin will go ahead, but with 100 maximum numbers, vaccine passes obligatory, logging in, social distancing and wearing masks etc. We all know the rules now and understand that although a bit of a pain, it is necessary to keep us all safe from this dreaded virus. A check for the passes and numbers attending will be held at the door. After the first 100, the Barn will be used as an overflow if necessary. Happy and safe motoring in 2022 — Leigh 6

SECRETARY’S REPORT Just when things are slowly starting to wind up again along comes Omicron, well not much we can do but just carry on taking all the care we can with social distancing, wearing our masks and where possible getting our jabs up to date to protect each other. Remember no Pass no entry.

Membership renewals for Nov 2021/ Oct 2022, just a reminder if you have not paid your subscription yet you will not receive the Hub by email or printed/ posted version going forward. There are seven printed / posted copies not paid for at the time of writing this report. This was included on your Club Membership renewal $41.60 if you were receiving it during 2021. NEW LOGO: after a rip- roaring start on the voting running neck and neck we have suddenly gone very quiet. Obviously the majority of our branch members approx. 1150 couldn’t care less one way or the other or have some other deep seated reason for not wanting to divulge which side they bat for. Come on if you have an opinion let me know so I can have a clear direction to vote for on behalf of our branch at the March Exc Meeting. You only have 3 weeks to 21st Feb to let me know. And on that note hopefully Lynda and I are off on holiday for a couple of weeks, fingers crossed. Regards Rod

? 7

Proposed Logo Change Those who have their email address registered with the club, will have received an email from the Management Committee with an attachment presentation explaining the reasoning, the path to date and the latest logo design. https://vcc.org.nz/brand/ All members were asked to discuss this and inform their branch delegate how they wish them to vote at the March Executive meeting. To this end, you are all asked to contact our branch delegate (Rod Thrower) either by email canterbury@vcc.org.nz or by mail P O Box 11-082, Sockburn, Christchurch (No telephone calls please.) stating that you would like him at the March Executive Meeting to vote either For the change to adopt the new logo to:

Or Against the change of logo and keep the status quo.

You will have reasons for voting either way of course, but please, this is what Rod will be asked to vote on at the meeting – so, no reasons for your vote, or comments on the design etc, just for or against the change. (Joint members will be able to have individual votes.) Please get your votes in to Rod by 21 February. If you know members who do not have email, please discuss this with them. Leigh

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT Welcome to 2022! Happy New Year to all! Just before the holiday break we had Santa visit the children at the Christmas picnic at Cutler Park. This was a great day with egg throwing competitions, sack races, tug of war, candy floss, truck and train rides and of course a ride in our newly fixed fire engine! It was lovely to see the excited faces – which weren’t only from the children. With this being the season for picnics we had the Boxing Day one at Ouruhia Domain, New Year’s Day at Little River (which I understand was huge – this year) and of course our own “Picnic Run” to Orton Bradley Park organised by John Kuipers. 56 cars travelled to New Plymouth to the Vero – International Festival of Motoring rally. The week was full of sunshine, great rallies, fierce discussions (regarding rally directions), evening entertainment and lots of laughter! The car parade in Inglewood was a real highlight. The council closed the street and put on a band. We parked down the main streets whilst the local car enthusiasts had a good look and the rally participants enjoyed the food and a cold beer/wine. Great for us and the town needing an injection of tourist dollars. They made us so welcome it was overwhelming. Well done to the New Plymouth team who organised it! Things coming up: Saturday 5th February 2022 – Commercial Annual Rally – Neil Shaskey Saturday 12th February 2022 – Boot Fair Sunday 13th February 2022 – Moped Run Sunday 19th February 2022 – Clip on Run Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th February 2022 – Branch Annual Rally – Katryna Shaw With unsettling times of Covid and variant Omicron we are endeavouring to keep all rallies going for those who are fully vaccinated. If numbers are over 100 people, we are looking at separating people into PODs to ensure safety. Remember cancellations will be put on the website Please if you are well and want to come – Enter! Enter! Enter! Katryna 9

Sunday 27th February 2022 – Incorporating Annual Rally Prize Giving Sunday will include some field tests, the BBQ at $10.00 per head and some music. The day will start off at 10.30am with a few doozy field tests! COMMERCIAL REPORT Thanks to Mark Drury for hosting the Christmas Commercial Noggin to finish off 2021, and Bruce & Elizabeth McCormick for starting us off for 2022, hosting the Commercial Noggin at their place, much appreciated. All going well the February Commercial Noggin will be on Wednesday 16th February, hosted by Don and Judy Bennetts at 714 Hills Road Marshland. Entries have closed for the 2022 Annual Commercial Rally on 5th February 2022, but a late entry will probably still be possible with the current Covid rules if there is anyone interested in joining us. Starting with coffee from 9am at Cutler park, and heading to a picnic spot for lunch, followed by an afternoon run back to The Barn for afternoon tea and prizegiving. As with all Branch events under the current rules a valid Vaccine Pass will be required to attend. Neil Shaskey

A Note from Colin Annual Rally – Saturday 26th February As far as the Annual Rally is concerned, a separate veteran and slow vintage route has been plotted out for the Saturday Run by Dave Inwood which begins at his property in South Eyre Road. We will still go ahead with that run, regardless of what happens with the rest of the Annual Rally. For those trailering vehicles to the start, you can leave your trailers there, and from there the run is only about 20 miles to the lunch stop between Cust and Oxford. You will need to be at Dave and Linda’s place,126 South Eyre Road at 9.30 for a cuppa, before heading off on the run at 10.00am. This run will still go ahead, but if necessary we may have to be in our own group of veteran/vintages for the day. Please go ahead and fill out the Annual Rally entry form if you intend to come. If you’ve any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a call. 11

VETERAN REPORT Jenny and I have just returned from the Vero Rally in New Plymouth, and really enjoyed the event. We didn’t take either of our veteran Wolseleys, opting instead to use our 1933 Wolseley Hornet Special, which did prove to be a good decision for us. Perfect weather for the whole time we were away (except for one short spell of rain one night) meant that the hood didn’t even come out of the bag for the whole trip, and most of our motoring was done in shorts, tee-shirts and sunhats with lots of sunscreen applied! I take my hat off to those who did the event in veteran vehicles (there were 26 altogether) - the shortest runs meant about 50 miles of motoring in a day, and the longest runs over 100 miles. Lots of rolling country with short steep descents and ascents would have also been a challenge for the lower-powered cars. The routes were plotted to keep us off the highways as much as possible, however sometimes there was no option and there was a lot of traffic and heavy trucks on some of them, meaning keeping one eye in the mirror was essential. Once off the highways though, the motoring was superb and very scenic. There were a few breakdowns amongst the veterans, but most were fixable on the side of the road, and I only heard of one car suffering a major failure. Highlights for us were the trip to Opunake on the south coast (an excellent day of motoring), the huge open day/display/ street party in Inglewood on the Thursday evening, and catching up friends from all over the country. Congratulations to the Enjoying a break during the Vero Rally at one of the large team who many beaches south of New Plymouth. Jenny Hey with the Wolseley Hornet Special. organised the 12

event, and well done for getting it in the bag just 48 hours before going into Covid Red setting (how lucky was that!). Over Christmas and the new year we had our 1909 Wolseley-Siddeley out a few times, using it on OCBC day and Children’s Christmas Party day at Cutler Park on 19th December, and on the Banks Peninsula Branch Model N Ford belonging to Steven and Veronica Oliver (New Plymouth) having picnic run to Little River. Once a quick clean-up after a hard run to again our car and the Tikorangi on the first day of the Vero McGibbon’s 1914 Renault AX Rally. were the only veterans at Little River, but we do have to admit to trailering them most of the way there. Both days were really good, with perfect weather. Malcolm McGibbon (Renault), Kelvin and Lesley Finlay (Hupmobile) and Allan Familton and Lesley Colsell (Stanley steam car) all ventured south to the Dunedin to Brighton on 22nd January, and joined 37 other veterans on the run - a very good turnout considering many of the regulars were away at the Vero Rally. This event seems to be slowly getting stronger each year despite, it seems, ongoing difficulties securing the necessary approvals to start and finish the event in the Dunedin Allan Familton sharing some steam at the finish CBD. In 2024 the of the Dunedin to Brighton. (photo by Malcolm event will celebrate it’s McGibbon) 70th anniversary run 13

one which will no doubt bring a large attendance, so note that date now! As yet, and until our main committee meets next week, I’m a bit uncertain how our coming events are going to happen now that we are back into restrictions of no more than 100 people, but rest assured it won’t stop our ability to run events – there will just have to be added precautions to ensure we’re sticking to the rules. It will certainly not be a problem just for the veteran section. Colin Hey

OTHER VETERAN EVENTS If we cannot hold a full branch noggin in March, I’ll organise a veteran noggin at some unlucky owners house (any volunteers?) on that same night (Thursday 3 March), and advise everyone by email. In discussion with Malcolm McGibbon, the Dutton Anzac Day run will still go ahead as planned, but will be restricted to only 100 people. This is another perfect event for veteran vehicles, and it may be supplemented with another day of visits to local collections the day before the run to provide a bit more activity for those who are coming from out of town. Happy Motoring Colin

OLD CARS BIKES AND COFFEE (OCBC) We’re still planning on holding OCBC in February and beyond, however we will keep to groups of 100 people within the grounds as was done in December. You will need to bring your Vaccine Passes, and bring a facemask as well if you plan to have a good look around and a chat to your friends. This probably goes without saying - please do not come if you are feeling unwell or have any flu-like symptoms. We’ll email out a reminder a few days beforehand to advise if there is any change or last minute alterations to the gathering rules. February’s date is Sunday 20th February.

9-90s

Hi to you all We had our Christmas Lunch again at the Pineacres Restaurant. We had a full house, 79 people, and a good time was had by all. We had a raffle with a difference. The proceeds went to balance the books. Everyone went home with a bag of Christmas Cheer. Let's hope that 2022 is going to be better than 2021 2022 February 9th Tony Meikle. Meet at The Peg Carpark, Belfast Hotel at 9.55am. (Please note, change of advised meeting place) We would like you to bring your vintage cars, if possible. . Looking forward to seeing you all again. J K and the Team

...and now to wind a few up: Could this be a first (and a last) for the Hub—a cake picture! At the Commercial Section Christmas Noggin held during an absolute monsoon downpour, host Mark Drury proved that he’s not just a top mechanic but a master baker as well.

THE CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PICNIC Sunday the 19th dawned sunny and cloudless, the perfect day for a family picnic. People started arriving round about 10 and after having our Covid Passports checked, children given a bag of sweets and being pointed in the right direction, we parked our car and a great day began.

There was candy floss to eat and stilts to play on and eventually, to the wailing of the siren, the beautifully restored club fire engine appeared, followed by the club truck. Rides were given and eventually we were driven (via a great drive round the grounds) over to Steam Scene for rides on the miniature railway. We were fortunate to have a ride on the little steam engine with smoke billowing all round us. After lunch there were running, 3 legged, and sack races for all the various age groups and finally an egg throwing contest. I have to say there were a few messy hands and clothes at the end of that contest. Lastly there was the tug of war. A really amazing programme. Finally, the big moment. Santa arrived on the fire truck and gifts were given. So much excitement. The day ended with ice blocks for all and, I am sure, some very tired and sun burnt children.

It was really great to be back to the car club again for the traditional picnic that we have looked forward to for most of the past 45-50 years. Sincere thanks to those who arranged such a wonderful day. Hopefully we can look forward to something similar in 2022. Margaret Seaton

Z Car and MG Rescue Mission—A Dodgy Story (With a happy ending) Sunday, 16 January was a nice sunny day and Robyn and I headed out to OCBC. Unfortunately, when we got around the back of the airport our Dodge decided to stop. I hopped out and put the bonnet up to try to see what the problem was. Within a short time Grant and his friend had stopped and offered their help. I thought that I would be ok and sent them on their way but not before Grant gave Robyn his phone number in case we needed a tow. I continued to work on the problem which I knew was likely to be a blocked jet in the carburettor. I didn’t have any success and then Lyndsey Saunders came past and stopped. While he was there a third club member (David?) stopped and offered his assistance as well. In the end Lyndsey towed us to the club rooms. Being towed through all the cars at OCBC was a bit like doing the “walk of shame” but at least it gave everybody something to talk about.

I was unable to fix the problem at the clubrooms due to lack of appropriate tools. Despite receiving lots of offers of help I felt that it was better to be towed home where I could fix the problem in my own time. Kevin Sarjeant kindly agreed to tow us home. As it turned out the problem was what I thought, a blocked jet. When I was finally able to clear the jet the Dodge worked perfectly fine. What a relief! I found that the jet was full of old RTV. It’s such a nice feeling knowing that the club has so many members who are willing to stop and help other members, even if they don’t know them. A big thank you to everyone who stopped, 18

helped or gave advice /suggestions as to what the problem might be. The photo of the MGBGT towing the Dodge is certainly interesting and shows that size doesn’t matter. Cheers Eric

MOTORCYCLE REPORT February – LAST month of SUMMER!!! Summer didn’t last long, did it???! Past Events. 8th December – Motorcycle Noggin, Christmas Special. About 50 met to enjoy the final catered meal by the Club Caterers, who now slip into retirement. Thanks, guys; you excelled yourselves for this, your final act for the VCC Canterbury Branch. 11th December – Fish and Chip Run. An extra slipped in as there was no F and C run in November (cancelled) and there isn’t a December run at EOM. About 20+ bikes met for the run into North Canterbury to visit 3 sheds; and lunch was at Sheffield Pies in Oxford. Deteriorating weather though put a damper on the day’s proceedings, but still a great day out. 2nd January – Motorcycle New Year Run. About 22 bikes went again into North Canterbury on a circuitous run to the recently reopened Greta Valley Pub. Great warm day slightly overcast which made it a much more pleasant riding experience. 29th January – Fish & Chip Run. Actually in the future at time of writing – is to be a run to the Hororata Swap Meet, but as this has been postponed will be a run to – elsewhere… Will put the Ashburton run on hold for another time. Will report on this F and C run next month. Future Events. 9th February – Noggin Night. The organiser of the “Ride Forever” motorcycle courses, Dan Ormsby, is unable to speak at this noggin, but his offsider will be there to speak instead. We’ll hold it in the Barn, from 7.30 am. It is likely that a course will be organised for 19th March. One course was run a couple of years ago with a follow-up to come, but COVID made a good job of stuffing things up. 13th February – Moped Run. Graham Barnett is the organiser of this event; it will start from the New World supermarket in Halswell at 10.30 am. Please see elsewhere in this Hub for more details.

22

19th February – Clip-on Run. Doug Watkinson is the organiser; please see elsewhere in this Hub for further details. 26th February – Fish and Chip Run. Cancelled for this month as this day is the VCC Canterbury Branch Annual Rally. Motorcyclists who are looking for a run on this day please consider entering the Annual Rally. There are a large number of motorcycle trophies up for grabs; the run does have motorcycle friendly instructions and the like. Support YOUR CLUB on its premier event for the year. STOP PRESS… At the time of writing we do not know what is happening with this event. (See page 10Ed) We’ll put out an email with more information after the main committee meeting which is on Monday 31st January. 4 – 5 – 6th March – Jim Toohey Run. To the West Coast. Leaving Friday 4th , accommodation reserved at the Recreation Hotel, Greymouth. On the Saturday a good run is being organised, out and back, but will be weather dependent. Home Sunday to Christchurch. Look out for separate email seeking interest for accommodation. Organiser, Mike Glenday, 021 192 0581 or mike.heatherg@xtra.co.nz. At this stage this event WILL BE CARRYING AHEAD. We don’t get 100 on this run, so no reason why it cannot proceed. More information will be emailed out after the main committee meeting, and the motorcycle committee meeting on 9th February. 9th March – Noggin Night. Meeting outside Armadillo Café, Prebbleton, 6.00pm, for a ride to the Crate and Barrel in Leeston for a pub meal. Home in own time after. 19th March – Ride Forever Course, Dan Ormsby. More details to come, will be an email out about this closer to the time, and so look out for it. Also, more details in March Hub. Paul Ainsworth – Ainsworth.electrical@xtra.co.nz is the contact for this event. Please contact him directly for information and your entry. 26th March – Fish & Chip Run. That’s it for this month, CML.

23

THE CITROEN TRACTION AVANT REGISTER The NZ Citroen car club's website is now being used to help record ( potentially all ) of the Super modern 12s and Light 5 vehicles that remain in New Zealand today. Whether they are restored, driveable, under restoration, donor cars only suitable for spares or just a pile of parts, there's a place for them on the register. All models and body styles are included in the register and members and non members alike are urged to record the details of their car/s by clicking here The Citroën Car Club of New Zealand Inc (cccnz.club) . "There is no need to log in" on the website and all owners have a choice as to whether they will allow their details to be shared with other owners, or want their personal details to remain private and their vehicle details used for statistical information only. The advantages of registering are numerous. If you know of someone with a traction who isn't a member, you're most welcome to email me their details and I'll contact them personally. So far there are sixty something tractions recorded on the register. I think there could be as many as 400 more. If you need help or wish to contact me regarding the register, my email address is; mistert.nz@xtra.co.nz Graham Tulett Traction Avant register administrator VCC member Canterbury Branch (abridged)

PICNIC DAY SUNDAY 9th JANUARY 2022 We spent the day at Orton Bradley Park. What a great place for an outing. It couldn't have been better. A beautiful day, plenty of shady places, in one word, fantastic. I counted 28 cars. The majority of them were from the 9-90s group. We had a good raffle and donated the proceeds, $90.00, to Nurse Maude. A good day was had by all.

December Noggin Display

On the left is Don and Judy Bennetts’ 1927 Chrysler 72, winner of the Time Trial Challenge Cup at the Vintage Annual Rally. Don and Judy have motored this car extensively throughout NZ for the past 35 years. Still in immaculate condition and with just 72,000 miles on the clock it has only ever been “tidied up” after being in the good care of the late Alan Storer. Right is the beautifully presented Ford Model A of Max and Ady Duncan, overall winners of the Rally. Originally imported from Los Angeles to Nelson, it was converted to RHD. After Max’s purchase he has finished it off including new upholstery and paint to a very high standard.

VOG REPORT Velosolex Owners Group Velosolex Owners Group DECEMBER & JANUARY RUNS Well talk about wrong decisions and incorrect weather reporting, December 14th 2021 was to be the day that the VOG’s were to have their Christmas run around the Leeston district, but alas this didn’t happen. VOG 1 had been listening to weather reports leading up to the big day and all looked doom and gloom in the form of considerable precipitation falling down upon us. So the decision was made to pull the pin on the run but all to no avail as the morning of the 14th was brilliant. All was good though as VOG 1 had organised that we go to lunch at the Papanui Club and what a success that was with a fantastic turnout of 22 loyal members turning up. I think I redeemed myself I even awarded myself with the “Hardluck Trophy” because of the “Clayton’s” wet weather decision.

And now to a New Year and new beginnings. We did actually get to do the run intended for December – Tuesday 11th January in fact was the great day. Gary Thompson was the journey director for the day and what a magic ride it was starting from Doyleston at the Osborne Domain with 17 riders heading around the back streets of Doyleston viewing remains of the old railway siding and many of the original homes in this early little Ellesmere district village which along with Brookside serviced the farming communities of yesteryear. It was then a leisurely jaunt back over

Leeston Rd and eventually onto Volkmans Rd passing a graveyard in a farmers paddock of older English vehicles (quite a few Morris Marina’s were noted in the pile) but VOG 1 fears most of these vehicles would be beyond redemption (sigh). We eventually ended up on Leeston Rd and diverted left into Station Road passing the well known Millers Machinery company and their yard of dead tractors – surprising how many of these had been destroyed by fire. A quick ride down Station Rd, Leeston Lake Road, Woodville St, through Leeston Sports ground to eventually end up at our lunch stop at the Crate and Barrel hotel. What an amazing place this is. If you haven’t visited this establishment yet it’s well worth the trip just to see the collections of memorabilia within the building even to a couple of Indian Motorbikes attached to the walls. The upstairs part of the building is really the highlight with one room set up with musical instruments of all types attached to the walls, another area for the rugby fans and sporting fans of all interests. It will “blow” you away. The food is real great too! A short ride down the Leeston Rd “cycleway” eventually returned us to Osborne Domain and the end of yet another GREAT VOG group adventure. Thanks to Gary Thompson for organising. Hoping all our avid readers had a great Festive Season and are now looking forward to a healthy & happy 2022. Royce
