Kaine "Kong" Marzola and Veterans Vitality Fight the Good Fight eterans Vitality is an alternative health company based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The company was founded by veteran Kaine “Kong” Marzola who served in the most decorated unit in Marine Corp history and internationally awarded healthcare entrepreneur, Mario Gonzalez.
The hero’s journey is played out constantly in films and books, yet it’s rare to see a man whose called to the hero’s journey in real life, rarer to see someone who takes up the cause, and in extremely special cases can you get a glimpse of the revelation, transformation, and return. That’s the story of Kaine “Kong” Marzola. Shortly after the attacks on September 11, 2001, feelings of duty, responsibility, and patriotism moved Marzola to enlist in the Marine Corp. Marzola spent 8 years in the Marine Corp serving two of the deadliest tours of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Ramadi, Iraq with 2nd Battalion 5th Marines Fox Company “BLACKHEARTS”, the most decorated unit in Marine Corps history. Marzola quietly commented, “there were only a couple of days in that first eight and a half month stretch where we weren’t taking enemy fire or where one of my brothers weren't falling to the ground.” When Marzola returned to Vegas, after the first tour, he tried to reintegrate with society, but his mind was still operating as if he were in Ramadi. Marzola viewed bars as enemy bunkers, his eyes would jet around every crowd feeling the presence of an imminent terrorist, and he couldn’t stop scanning the streets looking for IMD’s and traps. Marzola was back home, but he couldn’t escape the battlefield. Marzola served a couple more tours; peacekeeping missions in Southeast Asia and a second return to Ramadi, Iraq. It wasn’t until 2009, five years after he had first served in Ramadi that a military psychologist diagnosed Marzola with severe PTSD. It was also at this time that the injuries started catching up. So, in military fashion, Marzola was given a regimen of antidepressants, opioids, benzodiazepines; a laundry list of red pills, blue capsules, and white tablets to numb the pain and temporarily paralyze the memories.
12
And like most, at the beginning, Marzola felt better. Marzola said, “These feelings I didn’t even know I still had started coming back, pain started going away, and there were temporary waves of calmness that would rush my body— but it didn’t last long.” As the prescriptions started fading, the doctors increased the pharmaceutical dosages, and as those became ineffective, they were increased even more. It wasn’t long before the pain and anguish was worse than before he was even diagnosed. “I felt like my mind and spirit were caged inside of my body, I didn’t think there was any
way out.” It was 2012, Marzola had just recently been honorably discharged from active duty, but he was moments away from suicide. His twin brother, Kenny Marzola who also served three tours overseas, found him just in time, and talked him into joining him on a ride. It was at this moment, Kaine Marzola was introduced to cannabis and a spark of hope surged through his body into his heart and mind; and for the first time in nearly a decade, Marzola felt a sense of well-being. It was still the early part of this decade, so when Marzola told his psychologist that he wanted to try cannabis and mixed martial arts therapy, and get off these soul-killing drugs, Marzola said, “my psychologist told me I would die. Withdrawal symptoms are even worse and suicide is highly likely.” It was too late though, Marzola had seen his way, he walked out of the psychologists’ office, quit coldturkey, and began an extreme healing process through cannabis and mixed martial arts. “It wasn’t easy though, those withdrawal symptoms are real and I almost died a few more times. I don’t think most people make it out,” explained Marzola. In recent years, Marzola has become a celebrated fighter within the Las Vegas area and has gone through major amounts of healing because of cannabis, community, and some other plant based medicines. Marzola’s is the case of one battle and one hero. This isn’t one battle though. Millions of heroes across the world are diagnosed with PTSD. Millions of heroes are given the red, white, and blue pills that make the mental, physical, and spiritual trenches miles deeper. According to the most recent VA report, twenty veterans every single day commit suicide. “Seeing the battle at home become more deadly than the battle abroad awakened something in me - that’s why I started Veterans Vitality.” Marzola partnered up with Mario Gonzalez, President and CEO of Americare Health, one of the leading supplement companies in the United States. Recognized by President Bush multiple times for more than one of his companies, Mario Gonzalez and Kaine Marzola have created a line of premium CBD products to help heroes and immediate family members combat PTSD directly. What makes Veterans Vitality so effective is the quality of their products. Gonzalez mentioned “The nation’s most awarded chemists and growers have formulated our products to help the body and mind deal with PTSD and the other physical and mental ailments that our heroes have.” But it doesn’t stop there, Gonzalez also stated, “It’s more than just a line of CBD products. It’s about the community.

THE LATEST It’s about the mission to save our vets at home. We are hosting many veterans events this year and providing resources and opportunities for many of our vets. We’re also exploring alternative medicines to combat PTSD that will be released later this year.” “It’s not going to be an easy fight. PTSD is going to be inevitable for a lot of the heroes that do what they do. It’s what happens to them when they come home, what resources, what support they have. Veterans Vitality is ready to fight the good fight to help our heroes at home” said Marzola. Currently, Marzola and Gonzalez have partnered with veteran non-profit organizations to help veterans transitioning from active duty and a portion of all proceeds will be contributed directly to these organizations.” INTERVIEW WITH KAINE "KONG" MARZOLA TAHOE CANNABIS MAGAZINE: Are you originally from Las Vegas? If not, where are you from and what brought you here? KAINE MARZOLA: Yes I am first generation American born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. TCM: What prompted you to enter the military? KM: I decided to join the United States Marine Corps in my junior year at Las Vegas High School on September 11th 2001 as I watched the attacks in New York. I will never forget as my history teacher walked in with tears and rolled out the television and told us what we were about to watch would affect
our personal lives forever. TCM: After being diagnosed with PTSD, what was your experience with the typical, doctor prescribed pharmaceuticals? What led you to CBD and how was your transition from pharmaceuticals to CBD? KM: I was diagnosed while I was still on active duty so cannabis and CBD were not an option. I was on many different medications and antidepressants that were negatively affecting my life. My twin brother who returned from the Marine Corps before I did, and was also a mixed martial artist, introduced me to cannabis and then took me to train at Wand Fight Team to teach me mixed martial arts. TCM: What challenges have you encountered in starting Veterans Vitality? KM: As a startup with a grassroots effort I have encountered many challenges in expanding and promoting the message due to budget constraints and banking issues. CBD was recently legalized by the passing of the farm act but there is still a lot of hesitation from the big banks even though CBD is now more widely accepted in the marketplace.
KM: I use our 3500mg Full Spectrum CBD Tincture, Honey Sticks, 500mg Valor Balm, Skin Topical and Sour Gummies. TCM: What prompted you to become an MMA fighter? Has your MMA career been therapeutic for your PTSD? KM: My childhood dream since I was six years old was to become an MMA fighter. Mixed martial arts saved my life along with cannabis and other better choices. MMA has been very therapeutic for my PTSD. That along with CBD has enabled me to achieve a better version of myself. TCM: Do you have a favorite success story of someone using CBD? KM: One of our dear friends has a five year old son with a neurological disorder which caused him to have seizures on a daily basis. By using our CBD we are blessed to say that he has been seizure free for over a year.
manifesting everyday and the positive impact we are having on our community. TCM: What do you have coming up in the future KM: We are teaming up with non-profit organizations and businesses to engage in social functions within our community which benefit veterans and first responders and their families. Our next event, Warriors Walk with Warriors for Life America, is coming up on August 24. All are welcome to attend to raise awareness for veterans suicide by enjoying a mild hike concluded with Warrior Flow Yoga, CBD, a BBQ and guest speakers. TCM: Anything you want to add? KM: To all my fellow veterans and supporters that have shared in the struggle, I highly encourage you to try Veterans Vitality CBD, join the tribe and change your current moment into a positive direction.
TCM: What inspires you?
Blessings and Semper Fidelis.
KM: Positivity, the successful people around me, people who overcome obstacles and big visions we are

TCM: What types of products do you offer? Are they full spectrum or isolate based? KM: We offer a variety of CBD products such as tinctures, gel caps, valor balms, skin topicals, honey sticks and our CBD sour gummies. We offer both full spectrum and isolate based products. TCM: What products do you use on a daily basis?

America's Newest Medici
ontel Williams is an example of a modern-day Renaissance man, a throwback to cultural and historical figures who stand out in the annals of history due to their overwhelming levels of excellence in that which they did. Painter/Scientist/Engineer/Mathematician Leonardo Da Vinci was a Renaissance man, as was Ceiling painter/ Sculptor/Architect Michelangelo. Clearly, the one thing that true Renaissance men share in common is the ability to do a variety of things well. Really, really well! Sistine Chapel, anybody? Despite his daily struggle with the annoyingly-unpredictable Multiple Sclerosis and having survived an “it should have killed him!” ischemic stroke just one year ago, Montel continues to do what he does best: educate, entertain and advocate for those who most need his unique blend of abilities and attributes. During a recent interview, I had the opportunity to sit down with Montel (well, I was sitting, anyways) and determine whether or not the term “Renaissance man” was an appropriate title for this cultural icon. Hailing from Baltimore, MD, Montel demonstrated the seeds of greatness early on by being elected his high school Class President for both his Junior and Senior years. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after his high school graduation. After four years in the Corps, he applied and won admission to the US Naval Academy, where in 1980 he earned a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, with minors in International Security Affairs and Mandarin Chinese. While serving as a special intelligence officer, Montel traveled the world doing top-secret communications work for the military. The ability to speak fluent Chinese and Russian, languages which he mastered at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, helped him climb the ladder of success. During his 15-year tour in the military, Montel was decorated nine times, including two Meritorious Service Medals. Things got interesting for Montel soon after his military separation in that he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). He had previously suffered transient symptoms including vision issues (as many MS sufferers often do), but it wasn’t until he was afflicted with skin numbness and neuropathic pain (caused by nerve damage) in his lower legs that he sought official symptom diagnosis. Montel never used any of the FDA-sanctioned DMDs (disease-modifying drugs); the CRAB drugs (Copaxone, Rebif, Avonex, and Betaseron) that are currently initially prescribed for MS victims were still in their infancy, and they were (and remain) injectable. The good news for Montel was, and remains, that initial MS presentation with sensory symptoms generally tends towards a better disease outcome for those so afflicted. With relatively few MS treatment options available to him, Montel went the Renaissance route and began exploring treatment options

using marijuana. As a recently-retired member of the US Navy, an organization which takes a notoriously dim view of illegal drugs, he was understandably conflicted about embracing THC as a treatment option: “As a retired Naval officer, there was definitely emotional conflict about using THC, which still remains highly illegal to service members. However, if that is the only plausible way that you can get relief, then accommodations must be made,” explained Montel. Montel suffered the previously-mentioned ischemic stroke a little over a year ago, and it had an unusual outcome for him and his MS. Previously, neuropathic pain had been a constant reminder of his MS status. Montel reports that, somehow, his stroke “wiped out a significant number of the pain receptors that were causing my MSrelated neuropathic pain problems”. He is still afflicted with spasticity in his legs (unrelenting muscle stiffness common in neurological disease) and continues to dose with THC as needed. He prefers to vaporize or use tinctures for symptom treatment, as his lack of dexterity “prevents me from rolling joints!” he joked. Just as stealth is a big concern for many users, it is also such for Montel. While he does not fear being judged he, like many of us, does not believe in sharing personal information with those outside of his loop. As mentioned earlier, Renaissance men were considered such due to their ability to do many things extremely well, and Montel’s foray into the CBD- and THC-derived treatment industry ticks that box as well. Manufactured and distributed by marijuana industrypowerhouse “Select Science”, Montel’s “Lenitiv” line of CBD- and THC-related products is the latest entry into the world of hempbased treatment options. According to Montel, the company name “Lenitiv” is derived from the Italian word “lenitivo”, which translates as “soothing” in the language of my people. Lenitiv offers both day and night time formulas (appropriately named “Alert” and “Relax”), with the difference being the addition or subtraction of proprietary terpenes formulated to achieve the desired labeled effect . Another product that Montel and Select are currently working on getting released in Nevada (currently available in California and Oregon) is a combination of THC and CBD tincture therapy. There are three levels of this medicine: 10% THC and 90% CBD, 50% THC and 50% CBD and 90% THC and 10% CBD. Montel personally uses whichever formulation seems to fit how he feels and the time of day. Obviously, it is easier to gain stronger relief from the higher THC formulation, but it can have a greater psychotropic effect than will the lower-THC versions. With a Presidential election in the not-too-distant future, politicians everywhere are all scrambling to climb aboard the “let’s reschedule marijuana so I can get re-elected!” train, and it is beginning to look like lowering marijuana to a Schedule II or III drug seems inevitable. As an invested member of the marijuana industry, I asked Montel if
TAHOECANNABISMAG.COM

FDA involvement in marijuana-related companies would prove to be a curse, or a blessing. He responded that “depending on both the purveyor and the distributor, it could definitely go either way. If you are putting out a quality product, this information will be noted. However, if you are just looking to provide the minimum effort for the maximum profit, this too will be made plain. It will be a blessing to those of us who make a quality product.” The first “legal” marijuana available in Nevada was medical marijuana, and it paved the way for the recreational marijuana boom that is currently exploding everywhere around us in town; in fact, there are more dispensaries here in Vegas than there are high schools (total coincidence, I’m sure). I have spoken with many MMJ patients about what effect the recreational market has had upon the medical community, and opinions vary widely. Given that Montel’s marijuana baptism was one of pain relief rather than the pursuit of the ultimate buzz, I solicited his input on the topic. He explained: "I am concerned about this, because increasingly? Manufacturers are more worried about making a buck than they are about providing for the people who got marijuana legalized in the first place, namely sick people. I am calling on all manufacturers to keep an eye on drug benefits as well as psychoactive effect. Not everybody needs a massive amount of THC. Rather, manufacturers should keep an eye on both groups of people so both can be served well.” Finally, when asked what advice he would offer to other chronically ill people out there, he offered: “Keep on fighting, as hard as you can. We have one shot to live, and you owe it to yourself to live as well as possible”. Inspiring words from a TRUE Renaissance man!

Against the backdrop of a beautiful Western sky, among the mountain peaks and valleys that make up our “Wild, Wild West” live the innovators and engineers who comprise the flourishing CBD industry. The past few years have proven to be revolutionary in the growth of the industry, which is now not only relevant on our side of the map, but all over the rest of North America, and beyond. Tahoe Cannabis Magazine sat down with the masterminds behind CBD company, Steve’s Goods, to find out what makes their products stand
BY JENNIFER WALKER
out, what got them started, and just what is this CBG cannabinoid we’ve all been hearing about… TCM: What prompted you to create the CBG line of products? What sets these products apart? SG: We do our best to stay on top of the latest cannabis science. When we started hearing about CBG, we jumped on researching and learning all about it. Everything we found out was promising! CBG is the mother
molecule of CBD and THC. A detailed chemical process determines whether the molecule turns into marijuana (THC dominant) or hemp (CBD dominant). Results achieved in studies when CBD is combined with CBG in higher than regular potencies caught our attention. We started doing field research; to date we've hosted over 1,000 people in CBG ceremonies and the reports have been nothing short of phenomenal. It turns out that using the whole plant, in full or broadspectrum formulations is showing to be more effective than taking isolated cannabinoids. We'll always offer CBD products; however, our main focus is on making products that utilize the synergistic workings of the whole range of cannabinoids and terpenes. TCM: What sets your CBG oil apart? SG: Well, first off, we were the first company to bring a CBG tincture to market. I think it set our entire company apart when we made the decision to look past all the CBD hype and create a product that has more benefits for the consumer, even though it was more costly to produce and didn’t have a proven market yet. They contain up to 2,500 total milligrams of cannabinoid content with a 20:1 ratio of CBD to CBG. That’s a higher CBG content than any other tincture out there, and most tinctures have 0 CBG content all together. It’s also made with a super refined raw material that we call “super distillate” which contains rich amounts of multiple cannabinoids, while removing 100% of the THC, making it safe for people who are drug tested. Oh, and the flavor profiles are made with completely natural plant terpenes. People constantly tell us it’s the best tasting tincture on the market! TCM: It absolutely is one of our favorites! Do you have any other cannabinoid specific products that you'd like to speak on? SG: In addition to our tinctures, we have a wide range of CBD products, including edibles, body care, and award-winning concentrates. We are proud of all of them! Our concentrates are touted for their strength and flavor. Our 100 mg. bath bombs take relaxation to a new level. Our 30 mg. gummies are succulent, delicious, and anxiety-relieving. Our lollipops deliver 30 mg. of CBD in a pleasant, not-too-sweet package. Our “Wowzer” Skin Balm relieves aches and pains within moments. Aside from our flagship CBD products and concentrates, we believe we have just created another industry first with our “CBG Slab”- a 100% pure CBG concentrate product that we’re wrapping up R and D on. I can’t speak too much about that, other than we think we’re about to rattle the hemp industry and now the nootropics industry at the same time with the release of this. Stay tuned! TCM: That is amazing and we can’t wait to try the new products! Let’s look back at the history of Steve’s Goods…how did you get started in the hemp industry? SG: Steven Schultheis started Steve's Goods after personally experiencing the benefits of CBD. At first, he private-labeled another brand. That didn't last long. Steve began meeting with farmers, extractors, bottlers, and industry experts. Then he reached out to an old high school friend, seasoned startup veteran and Internet cowboy James Rowland, who dropped his corporate career life to take a small ecommerce website into the mainstream. Steve and James, with the help of an incredible staff, have exceeded Steve's dreams by turning
Steve's Goods into a thriving reality. Steve's Goods is proud to be an employee-owned company. TCM: What do you see for the future of the hemp industry nationally? Globally? SG: That’s a funny question because our entire business has been built around the unknown. I come into work every day with new surprises thrown at me, so I’ll just say what I’d very much like to see in the future for our industry: banking reform at the federal level, allowing states to fully actualize their own cannabis legislation. More funding for research on this incredible plant, leading to some form of cannabis being present within the majority of American homes in the next decade. I think this plant can help solve so many of the problems we have in this country, from addiction to prescription drugs, creating an entire new economy, and so much more. I’m proud to run my business out of Colorado, which is a mecca for industrial hemp. Our state has a tremendous amount of data now to show how that’s been good for us (better education, less DUI’s and crime, etc.) and I hope to see the rest of the country open up equally as much. I hate to say it, but if our government doesn’t get it right with hemp, another country will. Whatever happens, I’m all in and have dedicated my life to getting this medicine to as many people as possible, no matter what the challenges are. TCM: Speak a bit about the PBS television special and what that experience was like... SG: I worked with a media coach for vocal tone and presentation and practiced for weeks before the taping. I went in feeling confident, and that made all the difference. It went smoothly. I'm excited about the finished product. It’s a great vehicle to introduce CBD and CBG to the masses. TCM: Does Steve's Goods see itself branching out into other facets of the cannabis industry in the future? SG: We already have one of the biggest hemp product offerings out there, so we’re really just focusing on better distribution channels to get higher quality products into more conventional markets. “Target” hit me up. Have you even seen our beauty line? But seriously... TCM: Do you get "high on your own supply”? SG: We keep relaxed around here! I smoke copious amounts of flower and dabs… and Steve’s Goods allows and encourages open cannabis consumption at work, which is taken advantage of daily. So, yea, we like CBD and the good old classic Mary Jane equally around here. We all use Steve’s Goods products, so we definitely indulge in our own supply! You can find Steve’s Goods products in stores and online at stevesgoods.com.

>>>CBD Cheat Sheet BY CHRISTINE WATKINS
Since the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp has become the new hot topic. But for people who have never used it, cannabidiol can be confusing. It can also be a big waste of money if you don’t get the right product. We hate wasting money, so let’s break down some CBD terminology to help you decide which product could be right for you. When choosing CBD products, most consumers will look for the highest milligram product, because we all want the most for our buck right? Unfortunately, this isn’t always the best choice. Here’s why: CBD products have a range of ‘spectrums’ to choose from. The most popular CBD compound is isolate which is 99.9% pure CBD. Isolate is water soluble making it easy to add to any ingredient, but it is important to understand that isolate is a single compound of the hemp plant and it has limited capabilities. There are products on the market that carry a fuller range of compounds, these products seem to be more beneficial to achieving longer term desired results. There are three main categories: Full-Spectrum: Full-spectrum oil refers to whole plant extraction and contains every compound present in the hemp plant, including compounds found in its cousin plant, cannabis. THC is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis and can cause euphoria, inertia, but can also cause a positive result on drug test. These products are great for people with daily struggles and those who are dependent on prescription medicines. Full-spectrum products are NOT recommended for children, pets or those subject to drug testing! Broad-Spectrum: These products contain most, but not all, of the compounds. Since broad-spectrum is also a broad term, it is best to research which compounds are present before buying. These products also have the potential to carry a THC content, be sure to check the label before consuming. CBD Isolate and Distillate: the most commonly used in CBD products, but they are cannabidiol only, which helps with pain but isn’t very beneficial for long-term relief. Another factor to consider is the type of medicine you are smoking or ingesting. Here is a list of the most common extraction methods:
22
Liquid Extractions- A solvent like ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, or butane (to name just a few) is used in conjunction with temperature control to separate the compounds from the raw plant material. The plant is soaked in the liquid until the medley of beneficial compounds are completely stripped then it requires a decarboxylation process and a final purge to eliminate any remaining solvent from the oil making it safe for use. Co2 (Super Critical) Extraction - This method uses pressurized liquid carbon dioxide and temperatures to pull the compounds and terpenes from the plant. While it makes for a cleaner end product and does not use potentially dangerous chemicals, it
does require large and expensive equipment. This method is also used to remove the caffeine from coffee beans and can be used for essential oil extraction. Distillate - CBD distillate is an amber color, gooey, sticky material and is used in edibles and cartridges. It is also the beginning process for isolate. Distillate removes all the terpenes, fats, lipids, making it easy to ingest or smoke. Distillate is produced by separating and refining cannabinoids at a molecular level, eliminating many of the plant’s essential compounds, heavy metals, contaminants, and toxins. Distillate is commonly used for dabbing, smoking in vape pens, or added to edibles like gummy bears. Distillate removes the aggregate structure of the plant like the terpenes, fats, lipids, making it easy to ingest or smoke. This is also the most popular method for producing hemp when flower testing has failed, or the product contains toxins. When the hemp flower has failed testing or is contaminated with heavy metals and chemicals. It cannot be used, smoked, or ingested and cannot legally be sold or produced. When that material is distilled it removes most of the compounds resulting in the failed flower testing cleaner. This has become an industry standard for using polluted plants. They can now be processed into distillate or isolate sold as a “cleaner” concentrate. This concentrate goes directly into edibles or cartridges. My Suggestion: If you can’t smoke the flower, you may want to second guess smoking or ingesting the distillate. Always check the labels, talk to people who have been using CBD, or reach out to CBD educators. It hard to guess which method is best for you when you aren’t sure what to look for. Christine Watkins is a writer, a successful entrepreneur, carries two advanced degrees and is herself a survivor of the healthcare industry. She spent years in and out of hospitals battling a multitude of health-related issues after receiving an overdose of radiated iodine for hyperthyroidism. The healthcare industry ultimately ran out of options and she was sent home. As an independent woman and single mother with nowhere to turn, she sought out cannabis oil and finally found the help that she needed. With restored vigor, Christine decided she could not keep her cannabis regimen a secret. She began producing oils and products that could benefit others and word-of-mouth spread like wildfire. Within the first year, Christine was back to good health, helping others find comfort, and educating everyone that would listen about the restoring ability of nature. In the summer of 2015, Christine got the call that her father was in hospice dying of cancer and only had 48 hours to live. She immediately hopped on a plane with her oils and within 48 hours, her dad was being released from hospice and looking at going home! Cannabis oil wins again! Dad enjoyed an extra 8 months of life and Christine found herself immediately engaged in the west coast cannabis industry. Making Las Vegas her new home, she changed the name of her business, began sharing education, and has spent her days forming a company that places quality of life above all else.

TESTED
Every batch of Cohen’s hemp capsules are lab tested so that they and their patients know what is and is not in the product. There is no regulation of CBD products like other nutritional supplements, so the only way to truly be an informed consumer is if a product line is willing to provide test results. All industrial hemp is tested for THC at the dry weight, but not beyond that and is more legal than educational. Tests can help you distinguish between whole plant, full-spectrum, and isolate formulations so you always know what you're getting. Test results can help you understand the cannabinoid and terpene profiles and how products work best for you. This allows for more consistent dosable and repeatable relief.

TALES FROM THE CRIP
a patient's perspective
By Peter Jay
My View on Things! The world as I see it is a relatively complicated place. Half of the planet seems to hate the other half, everybody has an opinion about what the problem is, and here I am wondering why everybody doesn’t just shut the hell up and mind their own damned business. OK, perhaps I am over-simplifying things, but it seems to me that if people had more shit to do and less free time to bitch and moan about everything, the world would probably be a better, more productive place.
The selfish part of me clings to the belief that America is not here to save the world, even though every time there is a disaster somewhere else, the USA is the first to offer aid.
So I am old, meaning that the primary social media outlet that I have is Facebook. I love Facebook! It is a great way to keep in touch with all of my friends from all over the country. However, it is safe to say that it is one of the most divisive, polarizing media outlets available, and it is not even sentient. Lately, whenever I log in, I see the same few basic tropes being addressed. I generally don’t jump in on Facebook arguments, because what is the point? Hey, I HAVE a media outlet to vent my spleen, so that is what I am going to do! Let’s take it by the numbers, shall we? Education: The American educational system is not what it used to be. For that matter, I am not convinced that it was ever that wonderful to start with. Don’t get me wrong, my teacher friends all work like rented mules in an attempt to teach somebody something! As I see it, the problem is that everybody is focusing on the institution and not the product. You can be the World’s Greatest Teacher (and have the coffee mug to prove it because pottery don’t lie), but if you have second graders who do not know their colors, what in the world are you supposed to do with that? Do you want to fix education? It’s easy: institute a national high school diploma. Regardless of the state in which you reside, everybody will take the same tests and whatnot to earn a diploma. That will reveal rather quickly which states are actually interested in having an educated populace, and which ones like to keep their people dumb. Looking at YOU, Nevada! Immigration: talk about a medusa! Talk about a problem without any real viable solution! I get it, the United States represents the dreams of many, many people. Generally speaking, there are more opportunities here than immigrants find in their home lambs. For that fact alone, I cannot blame anybody for wanting to relocate here. The selfish part of me clings to the belief that America is not here to save the world, even though every time there is a disaster somewhere else, the USA is

the first to offer aid. I realize that the citizenship application process is Draconian at best, but until that changes, there are rules to be followed. It really sucks, the way families are separated at the border. However, if you tried to rob a 7-Eleven and your kid is in the backseat of your car while you are doing so, then said kid will be going to some class of detention center. Sorry, but it is true. Breaking the law is breaking the law. No? Donald Trump/Politicians in general: hey, I am the very definition of a Gen X disciple. I have zero faith in government, I am cynical as all Hell, and I believe that with all of my heart that the very best way to tell if a politician is lying is to see if his or her lips are moving. Athletes get invited to the White House, but they don’t want to go. OK. Donald Trump is the Antichrist. Whatever you say. I guess that I am not arrogant enough to believe that what Peter Jay wants is going to affect a single politician anywhere unless it is to that politician’s advantage. Let’s discuss marijuana, for a minute, shall we? The Pew Research Center estimates that north of 60% of the adult population in this country wants legalized marijuana. Some states have made tremendous strides in doing so, but it is still illegal on a federal level. Now, politicians are afraid of getting voted out of office and having to go get real jobs, so they are finally waking up to the winds of the people. 50 years later, but still. At the end of the day, it all comes down to one person getting one vote. Use yours as you see fit, but PLEASE don’t expect me to give a rip. Daily Dose BY SHARON lETTS
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AMY MELLEN From OxyContin to Cannabis, Keeping Pills at Bay Maryland resident, Amy Mellen, was living in Oregon in 2006, when she was in a near-fatal auto accident. The injuries sustained led to an increase in a dependency for pain medications that began with medicating for migraines years prior. “After five hours of surgery I woke up in a hospital bed with a morphine pump that didn’t even touch the pain,” she shared. “I was given Dilaudid, and that’s what began my nightmare into addiction.” According to Drugs.com, Dilaudid (hydromorphone) is an opioid pain medication, created for “moderate to severe pain.” A narcotic, its many side effects include slow to stopping breathing; with
misuse stated as causing addiction, overdose and death. In two years’ time, by 2008, after 18 months on the OxyContin, Mellen said she began seeing news reports of people becoming seriously addicted to the drug. The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that opioids killed 70,237 people in 2017, with numbers doubled in the last decade, and deaths continuing across the country in epidemic proportions. “I thought to myself, ‘no, that will never happen to me!’” she said. “I had never done drugs prior – I hadn’t even taken a drink of alcohol until I was in my 30s. Her husband Todd learned of a friend who cut his Oxy intake in half just by smoking, so Mellen said she smoked a little for the first time in her life. “When it gave me relief, I said, ‘what’s next?’” she explained. “Then, on May ninth in 2015, I took a half a grain of rice-sized piece of strong cannabis oil with a spoonful of peanut butter. Every two weeks I increased the dose, but I was still on the pills. As the oil started working, my blood sugars dropped, and I didn’t need the Metformin for Type 2 Diabetes. That was the first prescription med to go away.” On July 31, just three months after starting on the cannabis oil, Mellen said she took her last Percocet – the second to go of some 41 prescription medications and supplements she had been taking, daily.
Terpenes and Cannabinoids
Today, Amy keeps the plant in her system on a daily basis, ingesting approximately 500 to 1,000 milligrams of cannabis oil in capsules
30
at bedtime. The oil is an alcohol reduction, referred to as Full Extract Cannabis Oil, or FECO, and measures at about 85 percent activated THC or higher. She mixes the FECO with coconut oil and liquid sunflower lecithin, before putting it into capsules. “I ingest three to four capsules after consuming a small, fatbased snack. This helps the medicine absorb into my body. How strong I mix my caps depends on how my body is feeling. I also smoke about one gram of flower containing high levels of myrcene and caryophyllene, so my brain can slow down enough, and my muscles relax enough to fall asleep. Writer, Curt Robbins, pens on his site, Cannabis Aficionado, that myrcene is a compound commonly found in cultivars, such as Blackberry Kush, Mango Kush, and White Widow, stating, “A 1997 study conducted in Switzerland revealed that myrcene is the most abundant terpene in cannabis, sometimes composing up to 50 percent of the terpene volume in an individual sample of cannabis.” Beta-caryophyllene (BCP), Robbins says, is one of the 200 terpenes, or the essential oils found in the cannabis plant. Identified as both a terpene and a cannabinoid, BCP is not exclusive to cannabis, found in many foods, approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) as a food additive. Its many healing properties include combating systemic inflammation, depression, anxiety, cancer, and addiction recovery. It also induces sleep. Important to note, BCP was discovered in 1964 by Israeli researcher, Raphael Mechoulam – the same scientist who discovered tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, in the same year. I still wake up two or three times a night, but can fall right back to sleep with the cannabis oil in my system,” she said. “When I was on the Oxy I was restless and woke up often, and slept too much in the daytime, but never really felt rested. If my anxiety is high, with pain and tics going crazy – I’ll vape if I wake up in a PAWS wave. According to Drug Abuse.com, Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome, or PAWS, is a set of symptoms lasting years that is “separate and distinct from the acute phase of withdrawal, which typically occurs in the first two weeks after drug cessation.” Symptoms may include tremors, seizures, sweating, nausea, and rapid heart rate.
Whole Plant, Please
Mellen declares that if she has a well-balanced terpene and cannabinoid profile, she can get up to 18 hours of relief from just three capsules, all told. “If my oil is fading and that awful all-over crawling bug itch begins, with pins and needles – then I’ll apply cannabis-fused topical lotion for the neuropathy pain and eat a medible,” she said. “I can’t calm my tics and pain from just smoking or vaping alone. I must ingest whole plant cannabis to keep these conditions under control. Some say that terpenes in a medible won’t affect you positively or negatively, but I’m living proof that a weak terpene
profile in a medible will send me reeling!” Mellen has learned to make her own remedies, including cannabis oil, hard candies, and tinctures; but when she does visit local dispensary, Evermore Company, her go-to are Disco’s gummies, measuring in at 20 milligrams per gummy. “I suck on two gummies at a time, for a 40 milligram dose,” she said. “Sucking on them gives me quicker sublingual relief – and then get a full effect when it process through my liver. For me, distillate medibles just don’t cut it, they peak quicker, fade faster – I compare them to an over-the-counter pain med, like Tylenol. I need a whole-plant ingestible, fully activating the entourage effect, along with topical lotions, keeping my conditions quieted for the longest amount of time.” A sublingual dose is applied under the tongue, getting the beneficial compounds into the salivary glands beneath, and into the bloodstream faster. Distillates are highly refined or distilled concentrates, with many feeling that the process dilutes the full terpene profile from beneficial plants, such as cannabis. Essential oils, gathered from an alcohol reduction or an oil infusion, tend to test higher in terpene content, with patients, such as Mellen, feeling greater effects and more relief from chronic conditions. The entourage effect is a term used to describe the combined use of topical lotions and salves, with ingesting and/or smoking or vaping; with one complementing and increasing the efficacy of the other. Per a study, smoking cannabis with ingesting – or using pain medications – increases the efficacy of the compound ingested by upwards of 30 percent.
Pharma, with Balance
During the course of the day, Mellen will suck on infused hard candies, as needed; smoking or vaping one third to a half a gram of flower two or three times a day; topical lotions, multiple times a day. “Ingesting medibles every four to six hours is my saving grace from keeping opiates away,” she said. “Because of the degeneration from suspected Rheumatoid Arthritis in my hands over the last year or so, with increased pain, I’ve had to begin taking a very small amount of Percocet each month. It’s always a top-off to my cannabis meds, and also use Infrared Light Therapy with my topical lotions, before I turn to the pills as a last resort. I’m not against pharmaceuticals, they all have their time and place – when used safely and responsibly – but I never liked the way the opiates made me feel. After 18 years on the pills, I prefer plant healing and other alternatives first.” Coming to terms with her addiction to opiates, then finding an alternative way to treat her pain, was life-changing for Mellen, who says the process is never ending. “It’s all about finding balance – and it’s not easy,” she concluded. “I must remain grounded. I can never unplug mentally when it comes to medicating – I always must be aware of what I’m putting into my body now, whether it is food, drugs, or plant compounds – it’s all about being mindful.”
DEAR MARY JANE An advice column from the Grande Dame of Marijuana
Dear Mary Jane, What happened to my 4th amendment rights of unreasonable search in Nevada? I was just getting ready to fire up the pipe when I got a knock on the door? Hotel security wants to do a safety inspection of my room? At 6:15 pm in the evening? … WTF No one is taking this policy on? They can’t enter the room during the day when I am out gambling? They can knock on the door at any time? Day or night? They can’t call and give me 15 minutes notice? Anyhow, taking away my 4th amendment rights makes me less safe. ACLU or no one is fighting this assault on our constitutional rights?? Won’t be back to Nevada anytime soon. Bob from San Jose, CA
Irony, by name, is the Nevada legalized marijuana scene. First and foremost, I am so sorry that you had such a terrible experience here in town during your visit. I will point out that some casino security guards tend to be a little bit...conservative. In fact, some would say that the more conservative among them are actually wannabe be members of the police department. I wouldn’t say that personally, but it is easy to see how such an observation could be made. Calm down, Rambo; it’s just weed. I would like to say that your experience surprises me, but I cannot honestly do so. Not to keep beating the same drum, but I wouldn’t blame the casinos per se, nor their jackbooted security guards. As long as marijuana is illegal at the federal level, the casinos will want nothing to do with it. Why? All bullshit aside, a casino’s biggest concern is making money. Sure, the concerts and five star restaurants and what not are all well and good, but the bottom line is the dollar sign in any casino, and running astray of federal regulations will inhibit casinos from having the ability to rake in all of those frog skins. However, regardless of circumstance, it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. If you were willing to get even a little bit creative, you should have no problem at all enjoying your marijuana purchases here in town. We’ll
start with the obvious: vaporizing your marijuana product. Disposable vapor pens are sold at most dispensaries, and contain enough THC or CBD oil to easily get you through a long weekend. Edibles are another option for the disciplined consumer. Marijuana that is eaten tends to have a longer lasting effect than marijuana than when it is just smoked. You have to be careful that you don’t overdose, but it is a viable option that nobody is going to sweat you about. Consumption lounges are eventually coming to town, which will make it much easier for you to consume your product. In the meantime, however, if you are absolutely dying for a bong rip or to smoke a joint in your casino accommodation, old advice is good advice: put a towel under the bathroom door and start the shower. I hate to take you back to middle school, but as you learned, not everybody has a sense of humor about marijuana here in Nevada. I don’t blame you for swearing off this state, but give us a year or two and I would imagine things will have changed dramatically regarding this situation. Stay tuned!

The packaging is classy, clean and sexya perfect accompaniment to an evening cocktail, or just a great way to get that CBD benefit without the preparation of a tincture.
These sugar free candy mints claim to “cure cottonmouth”, and with a subtly sour lime flavor that melts in your mouth, they just might! With humble beginnings at the South Park Music festival in South Park Colorado, the creator and his wife discovered what experiencing cotton mouth was like at higher altitudes. After meeting with a “chemist” they’d found on Craigslist, the couple was introduced to a novelty candy company that got to work on creating the graphics and ideas behind this mint company in the growing cannabis industry. After a smoke sesh, just one piece of this candy works wonders for killing that cotton mouth!
The West Coast Cannagar team is quickly making a name for themselves in the CBD realm. Currently featured in shops all over the West Coast, parts of the Midwest and expanding daily, endorsers such as Baby Bash and Tommy Chong are singing the praises of this smokable product. Purple Rose Supply
Cannagar Molds & Tools
3
Purple Rose Supply was founded by a cannabis connoisseur who liked smoking joints with his friends every weekend but wanted a way to enhance that experience even further. A cannabis cigar, or cannagar was just what he was looking for, but they were sometimes unaffordable. Cannagars also come pre-made, which doesn’t allow the freedom to choose a favorite product based on occasion, add concentrates, or pick your preferred rolling papers. After research and feedback from fellow connoisseurs, the cannagar mold was created with the elevated smoking experience in mind. Purple Rose Supply cannagar kits are available in a variety of sizes, from personal which allows you to make a 2-4 gram cannagar up to large which allows you to make a 10-14 gram cannagar. Check them out online. Purplerosesupply.com $40-$49

Insuring the Industry PRODUCT LIABILITY roduct Liability Insurance is a hot topic these days! CBD oil business owners and many other cannabisrelated business owners are vastly unaware of the exclusion on their General Liability Insurance policy, leaving them open for a major lawsuit if a product fails and a consumer sues.
CBD oils, edibles, vaporizers and pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes, are just a few of many products that are vulnerable to a product liability claim in this vastly growing cannabis industry. A manufacturer, cultivator, dispensary, caregivers and vendors in addition to companies that are developing the labels and packaging are all at risk for a product liability claim. It is recommended that cannabis businesses include product liability insurance as part of their insurance coverage without question. If you do any of the following you are considered more than a distributor and will need to purchase product liability insurance: >>> Are products imported by you from another country >>> Are you placing your own name on the product >>> Is the manufacturer developing a product based on your specifications >>> Did you write instructions and warnings for your product Have you been explained your insurance policy(s) coverage you have purchased? If your answer is no, this is a good reason to provide Cannabis Insurance Lady the opportunity to earn your business. I have been finding gaps in coverage that could potentially have shut these cannabis businesses down due to one single claim. You will have to go through an application process to obtain a quote and secure product liability insurance. My advice, to benefit you and the protection of your business, do not fight this process. It is important you provide a completed application with copies of the labels, ingredient list and any other pertinent information that the underwriters will ask for-and they will require these items to be

submitted to get a quote. This is important so that they properly assess and put in place the coverage your business needs to be covered in the event of a product liability lawsuit. Product recall insurance is important to ask about as this can be quoted or even endorsed on to the existing product liability insurance. Product recall insurance can help in the event of a voluntary recall and will help with the costly expenses associated. A few examples are: >>> Paying overtime to workers >>> Additional shipping costs >>> Reimbursement costs >>> Costs related to warehousing >>> Product testing costs (additional) >>> Costs to notify your consumers Many companies assume they are covered by product recall insurance when they see the product liability insurance on their policy, this is a big misconception.
Cannabis Insurance Lady is here to protect your business with her various insurance carriers and most importantly ensure you have a complete understanding of the insurance you are purchasing. Call and ask for Cannabis Insurance Lady 702.251.4000 to discuss your specific business needs. Insurance available in: Nevada, Arizona, Ohio, Oregon, Michigan, Colorado, Florida, Texas, Idaho, Oklahoma, Montana and California (California dba: “360 Insurance Solutions, LLC) Also ask me about: Home, Auto, Life, General Liability, Workers Compensation, Property, Director and Officers, Special Events, Professional Liability, Medical Malpractice and much more! NEVADA HEMP INDUSTRY

Highlights, Insights & Spotlights for the 2019 Nevada Hemp Crop
Smoking Hemp for fast CBD relief? Yes!
The 2019 Nevada Hemp growing season has begun with about 85% of the farms that I have visited within the last 3 weeks already in the ground. There are no late bloomers growing outside, they all flower around the same time and get harvested after the final THC compliance test from the Nevada Department of Agriculture. Once a grower gets the "green" light (the Certificate of Analysis or C.O.A) from the Nevada Department of Agriculture to harvest, there's two directions that the Hemp crop will go: either to the biomass buyers who purchase the entire plant for various oil extraction purposes or towards the far higher paying smokable hemp buyers. That's right, smokable hemp! Have you tried this stuff? Smokable hemp flowers with less than 0.3% combined THC (combined percentage totals

of delta-9 THC and THC-a) are selling like crazy around the country and around the world. High CBD, low THC smokable hemp products such as hemp pre-rolls and packaged hemp flowers are becoming hugely popular and Nevada hemp flower is becoming sought after for it’s outstanding quality, great profiles, no mold, no mildew, overall beauty, and high medicinal content. Nevada grown hemp is consistent in higher quality for smokable products. We have completely sold out the 2018 hemp harvest and Nevada again broke all previous records for wholesale hemp flower prices with wholesale prices going as high as $1000.00 per pound. A whole new hemp industry is being born right here in Nevada. It's just the beginning of a revolution in the tobacco cigarette alternatives industry. Pre-rolls are big sellers to
people trying to quit smoking regular tobacco cigarettes. The wide varieties and excellent profiles these buds contain are hard to tell apart from the THC varieties. Big, fat and sticky nugs that smell and taste just like the THC varieties are sure to create some interesting moments with law enforcement. With names like Pre-98 O.G. Bubba Kush, Lifter, Suver Haze wholesaling for about $400.00 per pound, Nevada hemp farmers are starting to finally turn a decent profit for their hard work under a blazing Nevada sun. One Nevada hemp farmer has taken hemp flowers to a whole new level with a high quality, perfectly cured and beautifully manicured strain called Tahoe O.G. hemp that wholesales for $1,000.00 per pound. The strain is greenhouse grown and completely sold out for his 2018 Hemp crop.
In the next few months I will be visiting many Nevada hemp farms and talking to the growers themselves. These are exciting times and there are a lot of questions regarding the many opportunities available within the Nevada hemp industry. If you have a question that you need help with or if you need help getting started in this exciting and rewarding industry, feel free to email me at mike@ nevadahempassociation. com for more information. For further information on Nevada hemp go to Nevadahempassociation.com or to the Nevada Department of Agriculture website agri. nv.gov and click on "Plants Division" then "Hemp program". Jack Herer's classic book The Emperor Wears No Clothes is available for free at Jackherer.com. Until next month my friends, Happy Hempin'!

As Robert Plant famously improvised on a live performance of Led Zeppelin’s “Over the Hills and Far Away”, “…Many dreams come true, and some have silver linings I live for my dream, and a pocket full of gold… Acapulco Gold!” Popular since the 1960’s when the counterculture dubbed this one of the most celebrated strains due to its effects and beautiful golden color, this is pretty much my favorite strain of flower. What makes Acapulco Gold so special is the unique body high that envelopes your aura like a warm sunny walk on an Acapulco beach. I’m getting carried away here… as you will, once you try this flower! With an exceptionally high CBD to THC ratio, this strain is coveted, respected, and sometimes hard to come by in the desert. When I find it at my local dispensary, I stock up. Salud!

We need a clutch hit. There are two down in the bottom of the ninth,, and we’re down by 3 runs. The bases are loaded (and so am I) and it appears that we will have a pinch-hitter.. Affirmative, it looks like we get to see the power-hitting, rookie phenom for the LV Sluggers, none other than, first-round draft pick, Chem 91. Let’s see what he can do in a clutch situation. He was just called up to the Nevada Big Leagues this afternoon, and immediately gets thrown into the fire. Chem approaches the plate and steps into the box. Here’s the pitch. Ball 1. Look at the size of his bat. Holy shit. Is he corking it. No way, his 2 gram cone is packed with nothin’ but fluffy flower nug grindings. Here’s the next pitch. Boom! He hits the shit out of it (and so do I.) This ball exploded off the bat and it’s deep. It’s to the track, to the wall, FORGET ABOUT IT, it’s out of here! The LV Sluggers have done it! They win! And, these full flavor, full spectrum vape products contain no fillers, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin or additives. What I love about these gummies is that they taste like candy but deliver a healthy dose of CBD. And when was the last time that the words candy and healthy appeared together in a sentence? What’s great about these gummies is not only do they taste great, but they get the job done. With 20mg of CBD: 2mg of THC per gummy, your system absorbs the cannabinoids sublingually for a much quicker effect than just CBD alone, made possible by Nano extraction technology (NXT). BY MITCHELL S. BISSON, ESQ
MANAGING ATTORNEY, CALLISTER LAW GROUP
The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers
Well, Nevada has officially given up on marijuana consumption lounges – for now at least. Although the City Council had passed an ordinance authorizing marijuana consumption lounges back in early May, by the end of the month, the State of Nevada passed Assembly Bill 533 – prohibiting lounges until at least July 1, 2021. In response to Assembly Bill 533, the City of Las Vegas announced in early July that they were “officially” putting the marijuana consumption lounge ordinance on hold. That being said, they weren’t really left with many options. The choices were either put the ordinance on hold or violate state law. It’s disappointing to see that consumption lounges are still two years out, but it was good to see the City of Las Vegas take the initiative and at least try to get consumption lounges up and running. It will be exciting to see what tweaks the city decides to make to their consumption lounge laws between now and mid-2021. Either way, I’m confident the city will do everything in their power to make sure the consumption lounges are everything we have been yearning for. In the June issue of Tahoe Cannabis Magazine, I briefly touched on the legal battle between a bunch of marijuana companies and the State of Nevada pertaining to the State’s licensing process and issuance of new dispensary licenses. Some of the applicants who didn’t receive a license sued the State and claimed the process was biased and unfair. Out of 462 applications, only 61 new dispensary licenses were awarded by the State. Those 61 new dispensary licenses went to only 17 companies! The losing applicants claim that state staff failed to disclose the scoring process and were just outright biased in their selections. Thus, the losing applicants argue the process was unconstitutional. The State obviously disputes this and stands behind its decisionmaking process and ultimate selections. Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez is presiding over the case, and has been conducting hearings on a preliminary injunction for weeks now. While this legal battle plays out, the winning applicants are stuck in a stand-still and cannot open or utilize their newly-awarded license. The plaintiffs want a complete do-over, but with more transparency this time around. I must say, if there truly was bias and unfair favoring going on in the selection process, then I agree… the selection process must be started from scratch. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. By the time this article hits print, the Honorable Judge Gonzalez may have already made her ruling, but the reality is that whoever loses this hearing is almost sure to appeal it to the Nevada Supreme Court, so we are looking at another lengthy legal battle at that time.

Switching gears a little bit, cannabis banking is on the verge of being a reality here in Nevada within the next year! On June 5, 2019, Governor Sisolak signed Assembly Bill 466 and authorized a three-year pilot program for the operation of a closed-loop payment processing system for Nevada’s marijuana industry.
A “closed-loop” system is defined by the new law as a cashless system established by the State Treasurer to monitor and facilitate financial transactions in the Nevada cannabis industry. Think “gift cards” and “mobile wallets” with digital “tokens” you can purchase with cash or other forms of payment. In turn, the “tokens” can be used at participating marijuana establishments state-wide to purchase cannabis products (NOTE: participation in the pilot program is voluntary). The program is authorized to run through June 30, 2023 and requires the State Treasurer to submit reports to the state legislature every six months. Any system ultimately approved to operate under the pilot program must be designed to reduce the risks associated with large cash transfers, assist with paying taxes, provide transparency, prevent cannabis revenue from being diverted to criminal enterprises, as well as prevent interstate transfer of cannabis and underage use. In addition, the law mandates that any authorized system under the program be capable of real-time recordkeeping, allow business-to-business transactions, and must have either a physical card or a secure mobile app for authorizing transactions. And of course, the State of Nevada must be able to directly collect their taxes from businesses via the closed-loop system. The law requires that a system be operational no later than July 1, 2020, so by next summer we should be all set up and ready to start using our “Marijuana Money,” “Cannabis Cash,” “Weed Widgets,” “Pot Pennies,” or whatever the digital tokens end up being called. My understanding is that the State plans to select more than one vendor to facilitate the Pot Pennies Pilot Program (the “PPPP”) (Caveat: this is not the real name), so that should at least somewhat reduce the risk that the system rolls-out as a complete failure. Although the “PPPP” does not provide for more traditional banking services like loans, this is still a major step toward Nevada taking over as the Cannabis Capital. Hopefully Nevada’s ingenuity and pro-cannabis stance can continue to make waves and stoke real federal action as well. Federally – and outrageously – cannabis is still illegal and is a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act. However, this past May attorneys general from 33 states asked Congress to allow the banking industry to get active in the state-legal marijuana markets, and in June, twelve state Governors signed a letter asking Congress to pass legislation allowing the same thing. Clearly marijuana is becoming more accepted and “normal” nationwide. It’s time to finally get over the hump that is federal prohibition of marijuana. While I know there are many politicians that are very liberal in their views towards cannabis, it is time for the rest of them to #GetWoke and #StayWoke! LUCY IN THE
>>> Kitchen with... BY deborah costella
hey always have been and always will be my favourite band- The Beatles. And I’m loving the resurgence of attention and focus they’re receiving. Though their songs can be heard on any given day via Apple Music, Pandora or Spotify, the current documentaries detailing the boys, both individually and as bandmates on Netflix and Amazon, has really brought the Fab Four back to the forefront. There’s even a new film out entitled, “Yesterday.” I don’t know details of the storyline, but the music alone is enough of a draw for those of us from the “Peace-Love-Dove” era. Not all the boys in the band still walk the Earth, but whether they are “here, there or everywhere,” the impact the Beatles had on music, culture, and fashion remains immeasurable. I didn’t mention food because they didn’t really have much influence in that arena. Not to discount Paul’s dabbling in the kitchen, and George’s rapacious appetite. With all this Beatlemania resurfacing, I find myself not only singing or humming their songs, I’m back to wondering. Wondering, as any chef would, what did those guys like to eat? While jokes still abound regarding British food, that old mindset is no longer the reality. The British Baking Competition is one example of how talented those Brits can be in the kitchen. Not to mention Chefs such as Gordon Ramsey, Heston Blumenthal, and Jaime Oliver, among others, who serve as your proof in the pudding, the British buffet goes far beyond Kidney Pie, Black Pudding and Jellied Eels. Additionally, some of the best Indian cuisine I’ve ever consumed was

while traveling in the United Kingdom. Still, was more than a little curious about what foods and dishes enticed and delighted each Beatle. So I went searching; here’s what I found out. One of John (Winston) Lennon’s favourite foods was Corn Flakes. That plain, non-sugary cereal that gets soggy almost immediately after pouring milk over it. Yet oddly, should one fail to rinse the bowl clean when finished, whatever is left on the bottom and sides cling like bits of hardened cement. Cereal seems to be a common go-to food item for most men. Not only for breakfast, but lunch, dinner and especially as a before-bed snack. Lennie, as he was affectionately called, was no exception. He also had a penchant for Rice Krispies topped with ice cream. His non-cereal based fav was “Ham Sarnies.” A delectable British pleasure consisting of those small, ocean herring, drained then individually wrapped in thin slices of ham. Ham and Sardies can also be served as a sandwich. Those rich, oily Pilchards are spread across a slice of buttered brown bread with a squeeze of fresh lemon, some ham, then topped with another slice of buttered bread. It is reported that Sir Paul McCartney often imbibed on “Chips and Butties.” This is another sandwich but far less healthy than Ham and Sardies. Nor is this a handheld sandwich. First off, the two slices of bread (often white) are far more heavily buttered. Sitting between them are “chips,” what we refer to as fries. For Chips and Butties, it’s thick cut, steak-fries. Paul liked a perfectly fried egg (set white with wobbly yolk) on the chips and a second slice of buttered bread on top to close the deal. McCartney was and perhaps still is rather active in the kitchen. In the late sixties, he did some on-air cooking classes based on recipes from wife, Linda McCartney’s cookbook, “On Tour.”
Brother George, or Hazza, as his mates sometimes called him, definitely had a yen for Indian cuisine. But he too, enjoyed Eggy sandwiches. I’m not sure if he went for my preference, the fried egg sandwich, one with a runny yolk, or if he fancied the mayo-ladened egg-salad sandwich. I do know he was the first Beatle to go vegetarian, the other three following suit. Peter Frampton’s ex-wife also penned a cookbook; “Rock And Roll Cookbook,” in 1980. She included a recipe for “Dark Horse Lentil Soup,” which she stated was one of George’s all-time favourites. Not to be forgotten is Sir Richard Starkey. Having suffered a variety of health maladies as a child, Ringo seems to have a longer list of foods he doesn’t care for or simply can’t eat than those he loves. He supposedly hates tomatoes, onions, Chinese food, chicken and anything spicy. It’s beans, beans, beans for this “Mop Top.” When the band traveled to India to study Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi on the Rishikesh Ashram, Ringo brought cases and cases of beans. Knowing he would unlikely be able to consume the meals offered while living there. However, a true Brit, Ringo also loves his English Fish ‘n Chips. He claims they are best when eaten with one’s fingers. But wait, there’s more. The other famous consumption The Beatles regularly partook of was marijuana. While hanging out with Bob Dylan one night, Robert Zimmerman, as he was named at birth, kindly suggested they all smoke a joint while waiting for the arrival of some wine and food to their hotel room. Shocked and a little incredulous when the boys stated they hadn’t ever tried weed, he asked about the reference to cannabis in one of their songs; “. . .and when I touch you, I get high, I get high, I get high . . “ John clarified Dylan’s misunderstanding of the words to the song, telling him the words he referred to in the song; “I Want To Hold You Hand,” were actually, “I can’t hide,” not, I get high. Giggling at the misnomer, Dylan rolled a nice, tight blunt and handed it to Ringo. Not yet knowing his Weed-etiquette, Ringo took it between his fingers and smoked the whole joint by himself like a cigarette, instead of passing it. Dylan amicably rolled another for himself and the others. A year later, Ganja was a regular guest at The Beatles’ rehearsals, recordings and their respective living and bedrooms. Now I wonder; if I were to offer a Cosmic Muffin Edible to any of them, what should it be? I notice eggs and chips seem to be a common theme among them. I’m thinking a delicious assemblage of chips, topped with gravy and an over-easy egg would satisfy all four palates. Created by the FrenchCanadians, but regularly enjoyed by Brits and Americans, alike. And it has all the ingredients the Fab Four so loved when they were still eating meat. Currently Paul and Ringo, as well as John and George before they began their journey along the “long and winding road” to paradise, are vegetarian or vegan. But back when they still consumed meat and for those of us whose diets go beyond plant-based, I offer this homage to The Beatles; Cosmic Muffin’s Infused Poutin.

Terped Out Summer
This summer has brought on some new flavors to get creative with. Owners Mike and Wendy and their publicist consultant Tasha from “Dr. Terpenstein” have been a blast, educating each other on new flavor profiles created with cooking techniques, fresh ingredients and terpenes that highlight each flavor to create a balanced tasty dish. In their lab in Sacramento CA, we began creating simple dishes with their HT Cup winning terpene mixes they have created to replicate different strains. The next step was to create blends that were different and unique but not overpowering, sexy and flavorful. One thing with terps and cuisine: more is not always better. Finding the right blend takes time. Each dish created had many attempts before we found the right blends. Some of the terpenes just don’t taste good, it is like pouring brown gravy on a delicate fish dish. You don’t want to eat every terpene and certain terpenes at high doses can get you sick. Be mindful when cooking with terpenes.

I shared this story with my friend and corporate chef Greg and he told me about the “Next Level Key Lime Pie”. He was recently in Key West on vacation, looking for an authentic “Key Lime Pie”. The first was incredible, and if one didn’t know any better, they would go home thinking it was the best they ever had. We tried another “Original Recipe” and it was better than the first! Later that night at dinner, our waiter “A native from the island” professed that “if you haven’t had lime pie with meringue on top then you haven’t had “Key West Key Lime Pie”, so we ventured to a local hole in the wall only to be blown out of the universe! This pie had meringue seven inches high, and although the lime curd was delish, the crust was “Next Level”. I don’t know if it was rum, vanilla, brown butter or all of the above. The lesson of the day is that when you hear the words “best ever”... is it really? The destination is the journey, so experiment and enjoy the adventure! Here is a recipe for a “Strawberry Cough” Cajun Canna Butter Injected Beef Tenderloin we recently made.
What is “Next Level”? I still think my grandma “Mully’s” fourth generation, Jackson, Mississippi, peach cobbler is untouchable. After the death of my grandfather, my grandmother and I moved from New Orleans back to Los Angeles. I sold her single cobblers at coffee shops, music festivals, house parties, etc. Some clients have gone as far as betting against “mully’s” recipe only to be quickly put in their place. At days end I would always find myself at my local bud man’s house. Somehow in that cannabis smoke filled room I would sell out, grandma’s recipe had an undefeated record and today still reigns champ against any cobbler.

Strawberry Cough is a cross between Strawberry Fields and old-school staple Haze. The average THC composition of this strain is between 15% and 20%. Emerald Cannabis Worx tested Strawberry Cough through pH Labs and hit a record high of 22.98% THC in 2018.
“Strawberry Cough” Cajun Canna Butter Injection 8 oz. Salted butter, melted 2oz. Decarbed flower of choice 1T. popular cajun spice (we like Paul Prudhomme as he was a former boss) Cook on low for about three hours to infuse then strain. Add to any store bought “injector” aka culinary syringe and inject into whole beef tenderloin (or any meat) before cooking. Once injected cook to desired temperature, and your meal will be “Next Level”!
