Living in Las Vegas was never on my radar growing up- even in my adult years. The stereotype that permeated my thinking was that the southernmost corner of Nevada was a place where adults came to escape and play. Fast-forward another decade. I asked the Universe to guide me to live in a place that has palm trees, thinking that I would return to my birth state of Florida, or maybe even to California or a Caribbean destination. Clearly, I should have been more specific.

The irony is not lost on me that I moved to the ‘city that never sleeps’ to learn the art of stillness.

This story is a personal share about a bigger-picture realization of what the city of Las Vegas truly is evolving into. It is my desire to help shift the narrative from Sin City to Sun City. There is a bold stirring and a collective of individuals dedicated to helping, healing, and teaching others that live and visit here that there is so much more than the stereotype we have been made to believe.

A spiritual mentor of mine once told me that what you are seeking is seeking you. During the past six years, I have unpacked decades of data that I had been collecting from my life’s experiences. Years of personal discovery, healing, teaching clients, speaking, and writing has provided a wide perspective of what this movement is building.

How Loved Ones Cause the Deepest Pain

Some of the deepest emotional wounds we carry don't come from enemies or strangers— they come from the people we love the most. These people are the ones we trust with our hearts, and when they break it, it leaves a lasting effect on our hearts and souls. Love is supposed to be forever and give us strength, not harm us.

Most of my painful moments in life came from my mother and father—the very people meant to guide me through life, to protect me. I kept all of the painful moments bottled up, and it took a toll on my mental health. When I made a choice to heal my inner child and reparented myself, I saw how powerful love can be in a destructive way. However, if we seek compassion and understanding when the people we love hurt us, it can give us power over emotional pain even though it shakes the foundation of what we thought we knew about love, trust, and safety. I wish I could say, "I have never hurt anyone I loved," but that would be a lie. Unfortunately, I have emotionally hurt the people I love. I had unresolved issues inside me and painful moments in my childhood that I kept a secret. That secret took away the love I had for myself, and I replaced it with anger. Without self-love, it was easier to hurt the ones I loved emotionally. Forgiveness is never easy. Sometimes, the emotional pain is so deep it takes years to accept the apology, as forgiveness is a difficult dance; it always takes two to tango.

Pain is a part of life; we all know this. We can't go through life unscathed. Yet, some moments leave scars too deep to fully "get over."

For example, my father's abandonment in my youth hurt. In my 40s, I forgave him and set boundaries, and for two years, things were fine. I healed and gained understanding from my past, and those two years were so crucial to improving my mental health and becoming the best version of myself. Sadly, he reverted to his cantankerous ways and became his "old abusive self," and all the progress we made together was gone. It hurt to see the relationship disintegrate, but I was mentally stronger this time around because I put in the work of healing and setting firm boundaries. Therefore, when I forgave my father, I was hoping for the best but expecting

the worst.

The "silent treatment" is another way people deal with emotional pain. For example, there is my mother, the one who made choices in life that suited her needs when I was a child. Her choices left me vulnerable, leading to experiences of sexual abuse and mental anguish. I forgave her, too, like my father. My mother and I had a good run for fifteen years, yet it was all destroyed by one phone call. My mother told me she was disappointed in me, and in that span of fifteen years, she has been hiding she had been sour at me and expected more out of me for the past fifteen years. That call blindsided me, and emotional rage welled up inside of me. I did not know how to handle it. Instead of asking for help, I tried to bury the pain as I did in my youth, but it was too much for me to handle by myself.

That one phone call affected my mental health. For months, I was in a freefall, leading to a nosedive into one of the darkest moments of my life. I found myself lying in a hospital bed from self-inflicted wounds, and my soul and spirit were broken; in hindsight, I should have sought professional help and had my mother help guide me through this horrific moment in my life, but my mother made an important choice in her life that day that left ripples in my life. She chose to go to a cookout over visiting me and embraced the "silent treatment." That was seven years ago, and I still haven't talked to her since. The reality is that even after forgiveness, some people remain the same or eventually go back to their old ways. These two events left me with a deeper ache than I anticipated. That kind of hurt lingers today, but I learned to make my peace with it for the sake of my mental health.

Those are just examples of my emotional pain. Yet that is my pain to heal from; I must own it and process it. Your story of pain is just as valid because it's all the same. Pain isn't a competition. There's no prize for who suffers the most- all pain hurts.

But what does forgiveness do? Does it lessen the pain? Does silence make the hurt disappear, or does it settle quietly into our souls, lingering there? I don't have all the answers. What I do

know is that pain cuts deeper when it comes from someone we love, especially when that person shares our blood.

So, what should we do? Should we withdraw from love, fearing the hurt that may follow? Should we shield ourselves from vulnerability, hoping it will protect us from the sting of betrayal? To live fully, we must take risks. Love is a risk, forgiveness is a risk, vulnerability is a risk, and being your authentic self is a risk. These risks may bring love or heartbreak. Yet, love makes life meaningful. For much of my life, I tried to hide from my emotional pain. I believed that I had to be strong and put on a brave face; I thought if I could just shut out emotional pain, I'd be free from it; I was wrong.

Life is about learning to live with pain, not avoiding it. It's about finding the courage to be vulnerable, even when those closest to us are the ones who wound us. Pain will visit us, but it doesn't have to define us. We gain power over pain when we can still find love, compassion, and understanding in our hearts despite it. Forgiveness doesn't erase the hurt. It doesn't absolve the person who caused it. But it does set us free. It allows us to move forward without being weighed down by the bitterness of the past.

I wish someone had told me in my youth that pain and love go hand in hand and will always be intertwined in my life's journey. I want someone to say that our true strength lies when we can still find it in ourselves to love, even after being wounded by the people we love the most. Most of all, I wish someone had told me there is power in vulnerability. It's not about shielding ourselves from pain but finding the courage to rise above it and love anyway.

Getting to the heart of things is also like getting to the root; oftentimes the wellbeing of the root can be seen in the fruit. We will dive into what I see as the center/root of us as humans, and that is the heart. While our marketing cycles of holidays don't always coincide with cycles of nature, love is always the topic (Valentine’s Day or not) and is felt via the heart.

Inner Peace starts in the Heart

Some studies have revealed that our electromagnetic field gets emitted from our heart (and then creates a toroidal field around the body). So having peace in your heart is a great starting point in all that we put out into the world. For this (and a stronger nervous system support) I created one of our High Tech Healing herbal tea blends called Inner Peace. One of the ingredients in this blend is the hawthorn berry. History of the Plant

Hawthorn, a tree or shrub that belongs to the genus Crataegus, can grow up to 15 meters tall, with some records having shown Hawthorns living up to 400 years! This plant is most well known for its small red berries which have been revered for centuries due to their medicinal properties. The history of Hawthorn is a rich tapestry as its beloved white flowers and deep red berries are rich in pectin and nutrients. Found in temperate regions across the globe, hawthorn shrubs and trees have been an integral part of traditional medicine in Europe, Asia, and North America. They traditionally grow in hedgerows, woodlands, and along roadsides. The berries, leaves, and flowers of the hawthorn plant have a hefty history of use in treating heart conditions and promoting overall wellbeing. In medieval Europea, Hawthorn was deemed as a symbol of hope and protection, and believed to ward off evil spirits. Esteemed in herbal medicine, folklore, and the kitchen as a usefully

rich plant often times referred to as “heart food”.

Bioactive Compounds of Hawthorn Berries

Hawthorn’s benefits are largely attributed to the rich content of bioactive compounds, antioxidants, flavonoids, and polyphenols, which can help combat oxidative stress and protection of the heart. Additional compounds include oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) and triterpenoids. These compounds work synergistically to support the very important cardiovascular system. Flavonoids found abundantly in hawthorn are known for their powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Flavonoids like quercetin help to protect blood vessels and improve elasticity of arteries, which aid in lowering blood pressure and improving heart function. OPCs are antioxidants that play a role in the prevention of plaque buildup in the arteries. Triterpenoids have shown promise in protecting heart muscle cells and improving circulation, further contributing to hawthorn’s heart-health benefits. In addition to hearty support, hawthorn can also aid in the reduction of inflammation as well as supporting the digestive system.

For those looking to cultivate hawthorn, it is relatively easy to grow and hardy in various climates. It thrives in well-drained soil and requires minimal maintenance once established. Some can live for a very long time, there are records of some 400 years. There is discussion on the total number of hawthorn varieties (between 200-400 is what most botanists agree on). The seeds are poisonous, however! It is important to cultivate seedless berries to get all of the blooming benefits mentioned. It makes beautiful white or pink flowers in bloom in spring, wonderful for pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a fantastic addition to any garden.

So while we can utilize various plants and herbs to support our system, finding space to bring peace through trust that things always work out in this Divine Design is the best input you can have on your health. CHICKEN CACCIATORE

with Gut Repairing Bone Broth

MAKES 2 TO 4 SERVINGS

This is an amino acid party! If you want to build muscle, this is your go-to recipe. It’s got bone broth to repair your gut, olives to provide a healthy dose of polyphenols, and a vast array of meats to give you all the amino acids you need to make hormones.

MARINADE INGREDIENTS:

• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

• 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano

• 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

CHICKEN CACCIATORE INGREDIENTS:

• 4 large bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs (about 1 3⁄4 pounds)

• 1⁄4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

• 4 ounces pancetta or prosciutto, cut into medium dice

• 1 medium white, yellow, or red onion, peeled and cut into medium chunks (avoid sweeter Vidalia or Maui onions because of their supercharged sugar content)

• 1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into medium chunks

• 3 large garlic cloves, peeled and chopped 1⁄2 pound small cremini or button mushrooms, rinsed and halved

• 1⁄4 cup pitted olives, such as Spanish Queen, Gaeta, or Kalamata

• 2 tablespoons capers, drained and rinsed 1 tablespoon coconut sugar

• 1⁄2 cup sherry (any inexpensive bottle from the liquor aisle is fine)

• One 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes

• 1⁄2 cup chicken bone broth or water

• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

• 1⁄2 bunch flat-leaf parsley, coarsely chopped

• 1⁄2 lemon, cut in half

TO MAKE THE MARINADE:

Combine 2 teaspoons of salt, 1 1/2 teaspoons of black pepper, the Italian seasoning, oregano, and red pepper flakes in a small bowl. Add the olive oil and whisk until the mixture forms a paste. Taste the marinade and season as desired. Spread the marinade all over the chicken thighs. Transfer the chicken to a plate, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 48 hours.

TO MAKE THE CHICKEN CACCIATORE:

Preheat the oven to 350 . Prepare a plate for the cooked chicken. Heat a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. When it is hot, add the olive oil to the pot and place the chicken thighs skin-side down. Cook until a crust forms on one side, 3 to 5 minutes. Turn over the chicken thighs and repeat on the other side, cooking for about 3 more minutes. Transfer the chicken to the plate.

Pour out all but 2 tablespoons of the oil. Decrease the heat to medium. Add the pancetta, onion, bell pepper, garlic, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Cook, stirring, until the onions start to become translucent and the vegetables release some liquid, about 7 minutes. Add the mushrooms, olives, and capers, and continue cooking until the mushrooms begin to soften, about 10 to 15 minutes. Add the coconut sugar and stir to combine. Cook until the vegetables wilt and the onions brown a little, about 2 minutes. Add the sherry and continue cooking until it reduces by half, about 2 minutes. Cut the canned tomatoes into large pieces with a pair of scissors, or crush them into the pot with your hands. Add the tomatoes and bone broth to the vegetables and stir to combine. Bring to a simmer.

Taste and season with salt and pepper as desired, keeping in mind that the sauce will reduce a little more and concentrate the flavors.

Nestle the chicken thighs into the sauce and cover the pot with a lid or aluminum foil. Bake in the oven until an instant-read thermometer inserted into a thigh registers 160 , about 30 minutes. (The chicken will reach the recommended 165 with residual heat.)

To serve, transfer the vegetables and sauce to a shallow bowl and top with the chicken. Spoon extra sauce over the chicken, and then sprinkle with the parsley and squeeze some lemon over the top.

What’s up all you Chef’s and Chefette’s! Welcome back to another recipe by your favorite CannaBushi sushi chef. This month we bring you a very special recipe. One for the lovers out there. In hopes of keeping a memory alive, I wanted to bring back the thought of a particular rose garden for the winter while traipsing through snow this past Christmas. So this month, I decided to do just that. Let’s take a potato and turn it into a frickin’ rose man…yeah. A frickin’ rose. Sometimes art truly does imitate life. Especially if you can eat it. Now let’s get to my Valentine’s recipe.

Summer Roses in Winter

Ingredients:

(Tool) 1 meat slicer

1 hotel pan 2” 200 series or equal

1 large mixing bowl for spinach

1 larger Cambro or equal for potatoes

10 Japanese purple potatoes (peeled)

2 big bags of spinach (washed)

1 bottle of TRUFF truffle oil

1 bottle of Mrs. Dash

Salt and Pepper

Aluminum foil

Instructions:

First you want to set up your slicer at about 1.125 on the dial. Then, start slicing! With the right amount of finesse you will begin to ‘shave’ the purple potato. In a large cambro or equivalent have some medium to heavy salted room temperature water. During the shaving process toss the soon to be petals into the water mixture. If petals are too thick, it will not bend as this is truly a delicate process. Once completed. Keep to the side.

Secondly, Place your spinach into the bowl and add some TRUFF truffle oil to the bowl. Plus, some salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly with your hands and place into the hotel pan or equivalent. Make sure to create a nice bed for the roses.

Next, begin to ‘roll up’ the potato petals. You want to lay out 3-4 petals in a line and have the tips covering about half an inch so it can begin to roll with the next petal. Sprinkle some Mrs. Dash. Making sure to keep it tight during this step. Place the completed rose bud off to the side with the seam down. It will slowly dry enough to seal. Now that you’ve meticulously created a lot of roses, you want to cut it in half and flip the cut side down. This will give you the recreated rose look. Keep going and place to the side. Placing them into bouquets.

Lastly, place your completed rose buds in the center of the hotel pan. (Like seen in the picture) Begin to ‘flick’ with your

fingers some of the leftover water from soaking the petals. Sprinkle again with Mrs. Dash all over the finished roses. I used a different combination of spices and no salt for the friends I cooked for, but I wanted to give you something viable in this recipe.

Finally you will need to cook it! I know! It’s pretty huh? Turn your ovens to 275 degrees and once pre-heated cook for 25 minutes with foil wrapping the hotel pan. After 25 minutes, take off the foil and then finish for the last 15 minutes. Keep an eye on it as you don’t want to burn the tips of your roses. This will give you a particular ‘curl’ to your petals. Giving an extra added life and texture to this dish. There you go! You just created an absolutely beautiful dish of food AND It’s Good For You!!
