Tisha John is an Advanced Aesthetician and Licensed Massage Therapist of twenty five years. Here are my five do's of holiday eating to help you navigate those delicious holiday parties without derailing your fitness goals.

1. Do Wear Your Skinny Jeans to Dinner

This might sound counterintuitive, but trust me on this one! When you show up to Thanksgiving dinner or a holiday party in your comfiest sweatpants, you’re already subconsciously leaving room to expand. Instead, rock those skinny jeans that fit just right. Wearing something that hugs your body will keep you mindful of how much you’re eating, and you’re less likely to go overboard. Plus, you’ll walk in feeling good and confident, ready to focus on spending time with family rather than filling your plate to the brim.

Holiday parties are all about connecting with loved ones and catching up. Go into these events with the mindset that your main goal is to socialize, not just to eat. If you’re there to enjoy people’s company, you’ll naturally spend more time chatting and less time picking at the buffet table. Bonus tip: Don’t hang out by the food table! Staying close to the snacks makes it way too easy to mindlessly nibble on chips, cookies, or those little appetizers. Instead, position yourself in the living room, or wherever the conversation is flowing, and enjoy the people around you.

3. Do Skip the Extras

You know what I’m talking about—the extra gravy, the second helping of mashed potatoes with extra butter, the extra slice of pie. All those “extras” may seem small, but they add up fast! Remember, fat calories (from butter, oil, etc.) are higher than carbs or protein. For every gram of fat, you’re looking at 9 calories versus 4 calories for protein or carbs. So, enjoy your meal but keep the portions of those extras in check. You don’t need to drown your food in butter or gravy for it to taste good. Be mindful, and keep it light where you can.

4. Do Alternate Festive Drinks with Sparkling Water

If you’re planning on indulging in a festive cocktail (because, let’s be real, holiday drinks can be delicious) try alternating between your drink of choice and sparkling water. Alcohol not only adds calories but also slows down your metabolism because your body focuses

on metabolizing the alcohol first. That means anything else you eat while drinking may be stored as fat instead of being burned for energy. If you’re having a drink, try pacing yourself by sipping on sparkling water in between—it’s festive, refreshing, and helps you stay mindful of your intake.

5. Do Include Small Indulgences Throughout the Week

This one might surprise you, but having small indulgences throughout the week can actually help you stay on track. Why? Because when you deprive yourself Monday through Friday, by the time the weekend (or that holiday party) rolls around, you’re more likely to overdo it. Instead, plan for small treats—a square of chocolate, a couple of bites of cake, or your favorite holiday cookie. Savor it, enjoy it, and move on. This way, you won’t feel like you’re missing out, and you’re less likely to overindulge when temptation strikes. And here’s a fun fact: Studies suggest that the first two bites of a treat are when your brain gets the most pleasure. After that, the effect diminishes, so you don’t need more than a couple of bites to feel satisfied. Take that cake to go, share it, or just enjoy a bite or two and feel proud that you indulged without overdoing it. Behind the Holiday Lights The Silent Struggles of Christmas

The holiday season is a special time when stores are flooded with red and green, and holiday music and television find their way into our homes to spread holiday cheer. While it might be the most sought-after holiday for kids, the holiday season isn’t a joyous time for some adults. In fact, for some, it is a painful reminder of those who passed on or a reminder that grudges outweigh the Christmas spirit. Both of these take a toll on our mental health during the season. Some of my fondest memories come from when I was a child around Christmas. The extended family would travel a few hours to open presents and have a holiday feast. Both grandmas would cook away while cousins threw the football around in the backyard. A smorgasbord was presented, and everyone dug in, filling their bellies with their favorite dishes. Cards and board games were played deep into the night, hugs were exchanged at the doorstep, and talks about next Christmas were already in the works. Those were my memories of Christmas until the age of seven. The following Christmas was filled with divorces and families taking sides. Needless to say, the following Christmases never got better. From that time on, Christmas wasn’t joyous. It was a painful reminder of the past and the family I lost. Christmas became a trigger for my mental health. I grew depressed in the days leading up to Christmas, and all I wanted was for it to be over. I hid my feelings and put on a “happy face,” but I was hurting so much inside, and the holiday season became something I dreaded. I wish my story was unique and only applied to me. In fact, so many people have stories of how painful the holiday season is. I’ve heard stories about how grudges reign supreme over forgiveness. I have seen how people can’t put aside their differences for one night to make the holidays special for kids. I have seen how, when the matriarch passes away, it breaks the family, and they go their separate ways. Life isn’t like the Christmas movies- sometimes, there is no happy ending. For some, it tests our mental health because, at one time in our lives, that day was the most special day of the year.

So, what can we do to heal our holiday heartache? The first thing we can do is forgive. We can forgive our inner child for the pain attached to this beautiful season. We can forgive others and recognize that life is filled with mistakes and no one is perfect. We can lean into hope. I hope that the people who have done us wrong in life will learn from their mistakes and seek forgiveness. We can be the bigger person and accept their apology. We can be mindful that many people are struggling with their mental health during this time of year, and we can go out of our way to make them feel special, even if it’s just for a brief moment. Whatever “it” is, we must look deep inside ourselves and put words into action. My personal call to action is to give back to the age group where my most precious and joyous moments came in my youth, which was visiting Santa. One night a year, I visit an elementary school and dress up as Santa. Even though Christmas is a trigger for my mental health, I put that aside and give back to try to create positive and lasting memories for those children

because those memories still stay with me to this day. That is what the holidays are about— making them memorable. For one night a year, the adults in the room can put their differences aside and make it special. We all have an inner child in us who wants to be loved, and even if there are no kids in the room, the adults can lean into their inner child for one night. Is that too much to ask? Make this holiday season memorable not only for you and your family but for others as well. There are so many gifts we can give without spending a dime. We can give our most precious commodity, which is time. We can look deep inside ourselves and offer forgiveness. At the very least, we can provide others with the gift of understanding. Acknowledge the pain others may carry during the holidays, and remind their inner child that they are seen, valued, and appreciated. What gifts will you give this holiday season?

Generators and Manifesting Generators: These aura types make up seventy percent of the world and are our energizers who thrive on doing what excites them.

Manifestors: Making up only nine percent of the world, their energy sparks things getting started. They are designed to initiate and lead. Reflectors: The rare one percent who are part of this aura type are our observers who reflect the state of their environments. With every aura type, there is a specific strategy for how the energy can create aligned experiences. Generators and Manifesting Generators thrive with the strategy of responding. They feel most alive when they say yes to opportunities that excite them, like taking on a new project that lights them up or diving into a passion project. When they try to force things instead of waiting for that spark of excitement, they risk misalignment. By responding to what naturally energizes them, they tap into their incredible life force energy and create a ripple effect of productivity and joy. While Generators and Manifesting Generators share the same aura type they have key differences that set them apart. Both types are designed to respond to what excites them, tapping into their sacral energy to create momentum and satisfaction in their lives. However, Manifesting Generators (MGs) combine the energy of a Generator with the initiating ability of a Manifestor. This makes MGs incredibly efficient multitaskers who often skip steps or pivot quickly when something no longer excites them. Generators, on the other hand, tend to focus deeply on one task or project at a time, building mastery through steady, sustained effort. Despite these differences, they’re grouped together because their core strategy—responding to what lights them up— is the same.

However, they often feel frustrated when waiting for others or seeking permission. By informing the people around them of their intentions, they clear resistance and create smoother paths for their bold ideas to take off. For example, a Manifestor might tell their team, ‘I’m launching a new project,’ rather than waiting for approval. This openness allows them to lead with confidence and inspire others to follow

Announces New Henderson Satellite Location to Meet Rising Demand at 14th Annual Grant A Gift Gala

Grant A Gift Autism Foundation - Ackerman Center hosted its 14th annual Grant A Gift Gala on the field of Allegiant Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 13, drawing an incredible 870 guests. The highlight of the evening was foundation president Brian Hager’s announcement of a new satellite location in Henderson, set to open in 2025, which will enable the foundation to double its capacity and serve even more families across Southern Nevada. Before launching the live auction, Hager set an ambitious goal of raising $500,000 to support the new location’s buildout and initial operations. The night was filled with entertainment, fine dining, and a series of unforgettable auction moments. Las Vegas Raiders owner, Mark Davis, who sat beside Sandra Douglass Morgan, made waves by bidding $190,000 on a sleek 2024 Porsche Macan Electric. After winning, Davis realized the vehicle was electric and humorously announced he doesn’t drive electric vehicles and instead would donate the $190,000 directly to the nonprofit, allowing the secondhighest bidder to take home the car with their $180,000 bid. Another unforgettable highlight came during a lively bidding war for a six-month-old goldendoodle puppy. Grant A Gift board chair, Gary

Ackerman, owner of Gaudin Motor Co., won the bid with $40,000. In a heartwarming twist, Ackerman turned to surprise one of his employees, who had been lovingly caring for the puppy in the days leading up to the event and had grown deeply attached. Overcome with emotion, she burst into tears of joy as Ackerman gifted her the puppy on the spot, a gesture that moved the entire room and underscored the evening’s spirit of generosity and compassion. You’d be remiss to write Zoe off as a modern hippie. Doing so would mean overlooking the deeper reasons behind her life change, and denying yourself the opportunity to reframe your own way of living. Zoe didn’t choose this path for the sake of bohemian ideals. She made a conscious pivot because “normal” life was becoming less and less sustainable—just as it is for so many of us.

Zoe’s Path to Thriving Off-Grid

As a child, Zoe grew up in a family where basic needs were a constant worry. As an adult, she spent years struggling under the weight of rent, utilities, and the nonstop demands of traditional living. Determined to escape the endless hustle, Zoe, her husband, and their children packed it up and headed to the Big Island of Hawaii, Moku O Keawe. “Living this way isn't just about surviving. It’s about thriving,” Zoe tells me. “It’s about taking back control.” Zoe’s past life couldn’t be more different than the one she’s living now. “I was a dancer in a nightclub, selling liquor—just toxic stuff. Now, she grows her own food, and when necessary, she harvests her own meat. “The other day, I killed one of my ducks for dinner. Past me would think that was crazy, but now? I can’t imagine eating duck elsewhere. I don’t know what’s in that food or if the animal lived a good life.” Her relationship with her husband has also evolved throughout the process. “At first, we didn’t see eye to eye. He’s a California guy, used to city life. And now, he’s a jack of all trades. Building things. Wiring solar panels. Installing plumbing with me. We built this house together, and it’s been romantic in the weirdest way. Whenever we’re knee-deep in another crazy project, I’ll look over and ask him, ‘Did you ever think we’d be doing this?’” Of course, jungle life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. “The hardest part is trusting that things will be okay,” she says. The land they own is affordable because it’s near a volcano, which comes with its own set of challenges, but it made their dream possible. “I stress when it doesn’t rain or when our batteries aren’t charged enough to last through the night.” And, of course, the ever-present mom guilt creeps in. “I worry sometimes that this lifestyle will set my kids apart—like, am I doing the right thing? But at the end of

Her children, both self-sufficient little jungle warriors, are learning lessons most kids will never experience. “They know how to gut a fish, kill a duck, and get water. My 8-year-old even sells eggs to our neighbors like a little entrepreneur.” Zoe laughs but is serious about the skills her kids are mastering. “This lifestyle is attainable for children. They learn the value of caring for others, instead of just chasing things.” Zoe's approach to raising resilient, resourceful kids goes hand in hand with her commitment to a life of self-sufficiency. The Origin Story Of the World’s Most Famous Person

By Tero Isokauppila Once you unwrap this humorous and mystical story of Santa Claus, you will forever celebrate a new, but historic view of our most famous character known to people around the world. The story is told by the fireside, to a young daughter, by her father. However, the story was first told to the dad by his mother, who soon joins in to narrate the full story to both her son who has forgotten some details and the granddaughter who can’t get enough of this classic tale. The father, Sven, explains to his daughter that Saint Nicholas was actually a Turkish bishop who was famous for secretly giving gifts to those in need. The legend then spread to Western Europe, where the person known as Saint Nicholas would later become Santa Claus. The daughter, 10 years old, having known this story, points out St Nick was based on an old story about ‘Old Man Frost.’ The father goes on to tell the tale as his well-versed daughter corrects him or adds details to this classic story. However, Dad has a few informational tricks up his sleeve and teaches his excited daughter new insights of the story's origin. Santa was the spiritual leader of the Sami people. The Sami believe all things have a spirit. Santa was considered to be a shaman by the Sami. He performed solstice ceremonies at everyone's house. For these ceremonies, Santa would use nature's pharmacy to become the bridge to the underworld. Here we discover that the Sami winter ceremony is the ancestor of Christmas. It became known as Joulu, which then became Yule in German-speaking areas, which later turned into what we all know now as Christmas. However, when telling the story, Sven left out some details that his mother, Grandma Mamma Brigitta, a crazy hippie grandma, would pop into the room to help fill in the gaps. The pharmaceutical that nature would provide for the ceremonies, a detail that Sven left out when telling his daughter the story, was the mushroom Amanita muscaria.

Much like a present, the mushroom grew under spruce and pine trees, which would be picked and then dried on branches. The shaman would then bring the magical mushroom home and complete the drying process by hanging them in socks over the fireplace. Mamma Brigitta would go on to explain how the reindeer that roamed the land of the Sami also had a diet of amanita mushrooms, and this gave them the ability to fly. It also gave the people of Sami the ability to fly, along with their shaman. When it comes to Santa Claus coming down the chimney, Mamma Brigitta said that the Sami lived in homes, huts called kotas, that in the winter, only had one entrance, which was the fireplace opening at the top. There was a ladder leading up and out of or into the kotas. This is where the shaman would come down into their homes and perform the ceremony. Here is where Mamma Brigitta takes over telling the story from her son and correlates Santa Claus, Jesus, and the use of magical mushrooms. I don’t want to give away the complete story so that you can continue this journey and share the magic of Christmas with the family members you love about a holiday and a character that has become known around the world and is celebrated every winter season. You don’t have to be a psychonaut or even a person who celebrates Christmas to enjoy this book. Whether or not you are, I highly suggest you pick this book up and take the trip yourself and find out the (possible) genuine history of Ol’ Saint Nic. Cooking with Chris >>> Fresh Fusions with Chef Chris Rodarte This month, I’m making an infused apple pie that truly hits the spot. Infuse with CBD butter and sugar to alleviate some stress and lessen holiday anxiety. Or, use a little THC to infuse if pain relief is needed. Let’s get to it and I hope you all have a phenomenal Christmas!

Infused

Christmas Apple Pie Ingredients:

1 bag of Granny Smith apples 1 pack of pre-made pie crusts (2pcs) ½ cup of brown sugar ½ cup infused sugar (CBD or THC) 3 oz of Torani apple syrup 1 oz ground nutmeg 1 oz ground cinnamon 1 stick infused butter (CBD or THC) aluminum foil 1 lemon 1 egg

INSTRUCTIONS:

First start by slicing 5-6 apples into thin slices. Place into a large bowl. Add all of the apple syrup, half of both your sugars, and about 1 tbsp of both cinnamon/nutmeg. Mix everything thoroughly and then mix in your lemon juice. Now, put it to the side and grab a pie pan. Preheat your oven to 225 degrees while you’re at it. Coat the pie pan with some of your butter. Open up the pre-made pie crust and place it into your buttered pie pan. Making sure to press the crust onto the bottom and against the edges. (Do not cut any edges yet). Take the apple mixture and start placing your apples like in the photo. Don’t worry if there is syrup, sugar, or juices leftover. Take the leftovers and add just a little water to the mixture. Not a lot, just enough to maybe put a little here and there in your pie. (Save some for later). Grab your egg and whisk it in a small bowl, using a brush, wipe the egg completely around the rim of your pan. Place the second pie crust over the top. Cut any excess around the pan. Now with a fork, start pressing around the rim of the pie pan to seal everything inside. This step is important. Taking the rest of your egg, brush the top of your pie while putting a couple little holes in the top. Sprinkle some cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar on top. Cover with aluminum foil and place into the

oven for 45 minutes. While you wait, take some of the leftover syrup/sugar/lemon mixture and put it in a saucepan. On medium/low start to caramelize the mixture. Add a little water if you need to. Save for later once you get a nice consistency. After cooking for 45 minutes, pull off the aluminum foil and drizzle a little of the syrup mixture you created. Cook for 10-15 more minutes and test with a toothpick to see that apples and dough have been thoroughly cooked. Pull out of the oven once everything is finished cooking and drizzle with some more of your apple syrup. Let rest for 15 minutes. There you have it, a delicious apple pie for the holidays. You can add some ice cream and some whipped cream or BOTH! I hope you all enjoyed this recipe as I have enjoyed creating it for you.
