NIEVE MALANDRA
>>> on Music, Business, and Living with Purpose
Las Vegas is known for its world-class entertainment, beautiful desert landscapes and vibrant nightlife. But for Nieve Malandra, it’s much more than that. A professional singer, dedicated mother, and now a rising entrepreneur, Malandra has spent years perfecting the art of performance while simultaneously creating opportunities for others in the entertainment industry. Her story is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose.
Jennifer
Walker: Tell me a bit about yourself and your background…
Nieve Malandra: Las Vegas is a city of magic and has been my home for many years, deeply rooted in this city's vibrant arts and entertainment scene. Music has always been a passion of mine, leading me to a career as a professional singer. Beyond performing, I'm a dedicated single mom of two amazing daughters, ages 7 and 16. I prioritize health and wellness, nourishing my family with home-cooked, organic meals, with influences from my Italian roots. I also find balance and rejuvenation through meditation and my newest creative outlet, sound healing with crystal singing bowls. I find that singing in itself is a form of meditation, as it involves focusing on your breath, body sensations, and the present moment while producing sound, which can lead to a relaxed and mindful state, similar to traditional meditation practices; particularly when done with intention and awareness of your voice and body.
It's a fulfilling journey blending my artistic pursuits with my commitment to family and well-being.
JW: Your daughter is a talent as well and I am sure you have an interesting story about how you have supported her and helped to cultivate her development. Can you elaborate a bit?
NM: My 16-year-old daughter is incredibly talented, and it's been a joy to nurture her development. We have a close relationship, and I'm fiercely supportive of her dreams. We navigate the 'mom/daughter' and 'manager/ talent' dynamic with open communication and mutual respect. She has ambitions to become a mental health professional and possibly incorporating sound and music healing, which I am so excited and supportive about. I love that she wants to help people. It's about finding that balance between encouragement and guidance, letting her explore her creativity while also providing the structure and support she needs to thrive.
JW: When we last spoke, we touched briefly on how you have raised your family with a sense of healthy, organic eating. Please share some information about your healthy lifestyle and how you implement those habits.
NM: Health and wellness are non-negotiable in our household. We prioritize organic, home-cooked meals – it's a commitment I make to my daughters' well-being. I believe in fueling their bodies with the best ingredients. Beyond diet, we stay active. I meditate regularly, which helps me stay centered, and my daughters have their own activities. I also believe in providing a wholesome structure for my children, being a strong and present parent, not a pushover. It's about creating a lifestyle that nourishes us physically, mentally, and emotionally.
JW: Let's talk a bit about your talent agency: where did the idea come from, and how long have you been in business?
NM: My talent agency was born from a desire to connect incredible local talent – musicians, models, and specialty performers – with the diverse opportunities in Las Vegas. My vision with Malandra Talent is to provide personalized representation that truly understands the needs of both performers and venues, with my background and experience as a performer myself for so many years. I work with a range of talented individuals, booking them for everything from restaurants and lounges to weddings and corporate events. My goal is to build a respected agency known for integrity and a genuine commitment to the Las Vegas entertainment community and beyond.
JW: As a singer yourself, do you find that you have a keener sense of being able to seek out talent in others? Explain a bit about that process...
NM: Absolutely! My background as a singer gives me a unique perspective. I understand the nuances of performance, the dedication it requires, and the connection it takes to captivate an audience. I listen not just for technical skill, but also for that spark, that unique quality that makes an artist stand out. It's about recognizing potential and helping artists hone their craft and connect with the right opportunities. On the client’s side I do the work for them in terms of securing and procuring the talent, ensuring that they are professional and giving their best in order to facilitate memorable experiences for our clients.
JW: With every successful venture, there are always challenges. What are some of the challenges you may have had in the process of reaching your current level of success?
NM: Building a business always comes with its share of hurdles. Building a client base is where I am at currently. Getting the message out there that I’m not just a performer now but I will do the planning and booking for your next event and make you stand out can be a bit challenging but with consistency and delivering a great product, I know my business will leave a lasting impression and the business will expand from there. This is not my first rodeo! I’ve built businesses before and these experiences have made me stronger and more resilient, and they fuel my drive to succeed.
JW: We find it inspiring any time a woman starts a business and follows her vision! As a woman business owner, how are you inspired by your work, and what motivates you to keep pressing onward?
NM: Thank you! Being a woman business owner is incredibly rewarding. I'm inspired by the opportunity to create something meaningful, to contribute to my community, and to be a role model for my daughters. What motivates me? Seeing the success of the artists I represent, the joy they bring to audiences, and knowing that I'm playing a part in making Las Vegas' entertainment scene even more vibrant.
JW: Your recent social media post shows you working with young children, teaching singing lessons. What types of lessons and coaching do you offer for children? If families are interested in
By Jennifer Walker
seeking out your services for their children, do you have any tips for them on how to get started?
NM: I'm passionate about sharing my knowledge through vocal coaching. I work with children and individuals of all ages, teaching them the fundamentals of singing – ear training, intonation, mic technique, expanding range, and performance skills. I also share tips and tricks to captivate an audience. It's about nurturing their love of music and empowering them to find their voice. Families and individuals interested in lessons can reach out to me through my email nieve@malandratalent.com
JW: Do you have any final words of inspiration for our readers?
NM: My mantra is: 'Believe in your dreams, work hard, and never stop learning.' I believe in the power of passion, perseverance, and authentic connection. Whether you're a performer, a business owner, or simply someone striving to live a fulfilling life, embrace your unique gifts and share them with the world. Artists are a very small percentage of the world and even smaller are those making a living as one. The world needs us, fear is a liar, get out there and shine. Music uplifts and brings us together, this is a worthwhile mission, so share your light and go out and support other artists!

About BODY20
BODY20 is not your typical gym. Workouts are fast-paced and last just 20 minutes. Each session, a personal trainer guides the member through a personalized, one-on-one program focused on either strength, cardio, or a mix of both. Prior to beginning the session, the member is outfitted with a lightweight, adjustable, electrode-enabled suit which provides their body with over 150 times more muscle contractions than a typical workout. Workouts are guided and may include the use of light hand weights, bands, and weighted balls. Each workout burns calories, reduces cellulite, tones the body, increases blood circulation and builds lean muscle. By following the guidance of professional trainers at every stage, members typically see improvements in posture, core strength, and even back discomfort while addressing muscle imbalances.
BODY20 BENEFITS

Muscle: The Ultimate Longevity Hack
Why Building Muscle is the Key to Health, Performance, and Longevity
What if the secret to living a longer, healthier, and stronger life wasn’t found in a pill or a new medical breakthrough—but in your own muscles? Most people think of muscle as just something that makes you look fit or helps you lift heavy weights. But beneath the surface, muscle is one of the most powerful tools for longevity, disease prevention, and overall well-being. It is your body’s biological armor, actively protecting you from the most common killers of modern life— diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, cognitive decline, and even accelerated aging.
The science is clear: muscle isn’t just about strength, it’s about survival. Studies show that individuals with higher muscle mass have lower mortality rates, better metabolic function, stronger immune systems, and greater cognitive resilience as they age. On the flip side, low muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of early mortality. It is linked to metabolic disorders like diabetes and insulin resistance, increased frailty and fall risk, higher susceptibility to cognitive decline, weakened immune function, and elevated inflammation, which accelerates aging.
The good news is that muscle is not just for athletes or bodybuilders it’s for everyone who wants to thrive. It is never too late to build and maintain the kind of muscle that will keep you active, independent, and healthy for decades to come. At Elite Medical Associates, we take a science driven approach to muscle optimization, incorporating precision medicine, strength training, nutrition, recovery strategies, and biomarker testing to help you build muscle that doesn’t just look good but actively protects against disease and aging.
This guide will break down the most effective, researchbacked strategies to build and maintain muscle for life so you can move better, feel better, and ultimately, live longer.
Muscle: The Science of Longevity
Decades of research confirm a powerful connection between muscle mass and lifespan. A study published in The American Journal of Medicine found that older adults with greater muscle mass had significantly lower mortality
rates. Similarly, a meta-analysis of over 81,000 participants revealed that individuals with low skeletal muscle mass faced a 57% higher risk of all-cause mortality compared to those with normal muscle mass. This means muscle is far more than a fitness metric; it's a key predictor of how long and how well you’ll live.
Metabolically, muscle is indispensable. It’s the body’s largest site for glucose uptake and storage, making it essential for regulating blood sugar levels and preventing insulin resistance. Strength training has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, decrease visceral fat, and support cardiovascular health. In fact, just ten weeks of resistance training can increase lean body mass by approximately 1.4 kg, elevate resting metabolic rate by 7%, and reduce fat mass by 1.8 kg. These improvements reduce the risk of developing metabolic disorders like obesity and type 2 diabetes, two of the biggest drivers of premature aging and disease.
But muscle’s benefits don’t stop there. Emerging research highlights its role in cognitive health, with strength training linked to better memory, faster processing speeds, and improved executive function. Scientists believe myokinen hormone-like molecules released by muscle play a key role in neuroprotection, reducing inflammation, and promoting brain plasticity. A recent study published in Nature even suggests that maintaining muscle mass could slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, making strength training a vital tool in preserving mental sharpness as we age.
Muscle: The Ultimate Longevity Hack
The Consequences of Muscle Loss
Despite its benefits, muscle mass is something we naturally begin to lose as early as our 30s. If left unaddressed, this decline known as sarcopenia accelerates with each passing decade. Inactive adults experience a 3% to 8% loss of muscle per decade, leading to a reduced metabolic rate, increased fat accumulation, and higher risk for chronic diseases. By the time most people reach their 70s and 80s, this muscle loss can lead to frailty, falls, and a loss of independence.
Osteoporosis is another major consequence. Bone and muscle are intricately connected, and strength training is one of the most effective ways to improve bone density and prevent fractures. Research from the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research shows that individuals who engage in regular resistance training have significantly stronger bones, reducing the risk of fractures and improving overall skeletal health.
Cognitive decline has also been directly linked to muscle loss. Studies have shown that individuals with higher grip strength, a simple yet powerful indicator of overall muscle function tend to have better cognitive performance and a lower risk of dementia. Maintaining strength through resistance training can help mitigate these risks, keeping both the body and mind sharp.
Building and Maintaining Muscle for Life
The good news? Muscle loss isn’t inevitable. Resistance training is the most effective intervention for preserving and building muscle, regardless of age. Just two to three sessions per week can dramatically improve muscle mass, strength, and functional performance. The key lies in progressive overload gradually increasing resistance, training volume, or exercise complexity to continually challenge the muscles.
Some of the best compound movements for muscle growth include squats, deadlifts, overhead presses, and pull-ups. These exercises engage multiple muscle groups, promoting strength, mobility, and functional resilience. Meanwhile, isolation exercises, such as bicep curls and leg extensions, can be used to target specific muscle weaknesses and enhance overall balance.
However, training is just one piece of the puzzle. Recovery is equally vital. Contrary to popular belief, muscles don’t grow during workouts they grow during rest. Deep sleep is crucial for muscle repair, as it’s during this time that the body releases growth hormone and repairs tissue damage. Chronic sleep deprivation, on the other hand, impairs muscle recovery, disrupts hormonal balance, and increases stressinduced cortisol levels, which can actually break down muscle tissue.
Managing stress is another critical factor. Prolonged cortisol elevation, caused by chronic stress, has been shown to inhibit muscle growth and promote fat storage. Techniques such as meditation, breathwork, sauna therapy, and cold exposure can help regulate cortisol, reduce inflammation, and accelerate recovery, ultimately optimizing muscle function.
A Precision Approach to Muscle Health
At Elite Medical Associates, we take a data-driven approach to muscle optimization. By integrating biomarker analysis, personalized strength training programs, and targeted nutritional strategies, we help individuals build and maintain muscle in the most effective way possible. Understanding that muscle growth is influenced by multiple factors including hormonal balance, inflammation, and metabolic efficiency we use science-backed interventions to create customized plans that support long-term strength and longevity.

From Family Legacy to Phenomenon
A Passion for Rocks, Minerals and Crystals
For many, childhood passions fade with time, but for Adrienne McElwain, a lifelong fascination with rocks and minerals has shaped her career and inspired a movement. From humble beginnings in a family-owned rock shop to spearheading one of the most unique crystal festivals in the country, her journey is a testament to perseverance, innovation, and the magic of minerals.
A Legacy Built on Stones
Adrienne’s story begins with her father, whose love for geology took root in fourth grade when he visited a small rock shop in Salt Lake City. That childhood interest blossomed into a career, leading him to study geology, work in the very same rock shop, and eventually take over the business when the original owner passed away. Growing up in this environment, Adrienne was immersed in the world of minerals, traveling for mining expeditions and learning the intricacies of the trade firsthand.
By 2018, her father’s health concerns led to the decision to close the family shop. But Adrienne wasn’t ready to let go of the passion that had shaped her life. She took the remaining inventory and launched a smallscale crystal festival in the store’s parking lot, allowing artists and miners to connect directly with the public. The success of this venture ignited a bold new idea: turning this event into a full-fledged business.
A Leap of Faith and the Pandemic Pivot
In 2019, Adrienne took a risk, investing $20,000 on her credit card to secure a venue and expand the event. Then, just as she was preparing for the festival’s big debut, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. With events shutting down nationwide, she faced a daunting question: what now?
Rather than cancel, she took action. Through persistence and determination, she navigated the complex web of pandemic regulations, working with the health department to ensure her event could proceed safely. The result? Her crystal festival became the only major event to take place in that area of Utah within a six-week period, attracting visitors, media coverage, and even the mayor. It was an overwhelming success.
Expanding a Unique Vision Nationwide
Following the festival’s success, Adrienne recognized the potential to grow. What started as a one-time event quickly evolved into a nationwide series, expanding from an annual show to 15 events across the country. What makes these festivals so special is the seamless blend of geological expertise and metaphysical energy, offering something for everyone, from serious collectors to spiritual seekers.
The Crystal Festival isn’t just about buying and selling minerals; it’s about creating an experience. Attendees can explore everything from palm readings to mine-owner meet-and-greets, hands-on rockhounding trips, and interactive exhibits. “It’s the only place where you can get a palm reading and meet a mine owner in the same space,” Adrienne shares. “People love that mix of science, spirituality, and adventure.”
Bringing the Crystal Festival to Las Vegas
Now, for the first time, Adrienne is bringing her festival to Las Vegas. Taking place on March 15-16 at The INDUSTRIAL Event Space, the Las Vegas Crystal Festival promises an unparalleled experience for rock and mineral enthusiasts of all levels. Featuring over 50 vendors, the event will showcase world-class minerals, fossils, jewelry, interactive experiences like gold panning and fossil digs, and family-friendly activities, all with free admission and parking.
For newcomers, it’s an opportunity to explore the fascinating world of crystals, whether for their beauty, geological significance, or healing properties. More seasoned collectors will find a space to network with mine owners, geologists, and artists. As Adrienne puts it, “If your kid won’t stop filling your washer with rocks, bring them here; we’ll teach them how to do it the right way!” When asked about the inspiration and energy surrounding these events, Crystal elaborated- “Not only are our events open to everybody, we really want everybody to come. If you are only going because your kid will not stop filling your washer full of rocks and minerals, we are so happy to have you, and we will show your kids all the options of collecting rocks and minerals! We're happy to take them out and teach

them we have presentations like Scout presentations, where they can come get their merit badge. They just sign up on the website. If you are more advanced and you have a good sized collection, our events give you an opportunity to talk with mine owners and ask questions, or network about certain minerals and crystals that you are interested in. I've had people walk up to our booth before and just say, “I came because my pet died, I’ve been feeling sad, and I have always wanted to learn about crystal healing, but I know nothing about it.” I've spent two or three hours with them, teaching them things, walking them around to other crystal healers and showing them stuff that can help them. It can be so rewarding to get people started and introduce them to the beauty and healing of rocks and minerals. And it's just fun, and it's so rewarding to get people started.”
Spreading the Word: Social Media and Community Engagement
Adrienne and her team have harnessed the power of social media to promote their events, using platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to connect with enthusiasts worldwide. They also collaborate with local businesses, distribute flyers, and run ads across streaming and radio platforms.
For those looking to dive deeper into the world of minerals, Adrienne’s online brand, Crystal Barista, provides resources, education, and even a soon-to-launch special blend of coffee.
Whether you’re an experienced rockhound, a crystal healing enthusiast, or just curious about the world of minerals, the Las Vegas Crystal Festival offers an unforgettable experience. To learn more about upcoming events, visit CrystalFestival.org or follow Adrienne on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram (@CrystalBarista).
From a childhood spent in a small-town rock shop to leading a nationwide festival phenomenon, Adrienne’s journey proves that passion, resilience, and a little bit of crystal magic can turn a dream into reality.

The Role of VEMI in Restoring Biofield Coherence
The PureWave VEMI Treatment is designed to restore coherence to your biofield, improving physical, mental, and emotional function. By combining vibroacoustic, electromagnetic, and infrared therapies, the VEMI system harmonizes the body’s natural frequencies, allowing cells to communicate effectively and restore balance.
Vibroacoustics: Harmonizing the Body’s Energy Waves
The VEMI system uses millions of audio frequencies to create a vibration experience that helps the body come into harmony physically, emotionally, and spiritually. This process aligns the trillions of subatomic particles in your body, allowing them to spin in concert and restore coherence to your biofield.
Electromagnetic Therapy (PEMF):
Restoring Cellular Communication
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy delivers specific frequencies that travel through the body, helping cells regain their natural spin and vibration. This process enhances cellular communication, allowing the body to self-regulate and maintain healthy function.
concert together. The sum pattern of all these waves emanating from the particles in your body creates what is known as the biofield.
The biofield is a field of electromagnetic energy that surrounds and interpenetrates the human body. In 1994, a panel of National Institute of Health (NIH) scientists officially named this field of energy and information the biofield. This biofield is not just a passive energy field—it actively informs the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of the human body.
How the Biofield Regulates Your Health
Our cells exchange information to regulate body functions through sending and receiving specific frequencies. This cell signaling precedes and regulates all biochemical actions. When these natural frequency signals become scrambled, so does our body’s ability to self-regulate and maintain healthy function. Disruptions can occur due to the introduction of harmful factors such as viruses, toxins, heavy metals, radiation, and harmful electromagnetic fields (EMF).
For example, unhealthy frequencies like WiFi signals can disrupt cellular function, altering the cell’s vibration and compromising its ability to send, receive, and accurately interpret signals. This leads to incoherence within the biofield, manifesting as physical, mental, or emotional imbalances.
Infrared Heat Therapy: Supporting Detoxification and Flow
Infrared heat penetrates deep into the body, improving fluid dynamics and supporting detoxification. This therapy enhances the flow of energy and information within the biofield, promoting overall coherence and balance.
Sessions are available in 30-minute or 60-minute durations. During this time, the body undergoes a transformative experience, with each modality working in harmony to restore balance and vitality.
Key Benefits of PureWave VEMI Treatment
Emotional Well-Being
The VEMI treatment effortlessly restores heart rhythm patterns, creating physiological coherence. This scientifically measurable state is characterized by increased order and harmony in the mind, emotions, and body. The emotional purge experienced during the session benefits the entire body, profoundly affecting perception, thinking, feelings, and performance.
Personal Growth & Mental Expansion
When all five brain waves (delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma) synchronize, the ordinary thinking process is transcended. This state of pure consciousness allows for perfect stillness, deep rest, and a complete absence of mental boundaries, facilitating solutions to wellness challenges and promoting personal growth.
Clarity of Mind
A Menla scan observing biometrics shows that VEMI therapy balances the five brainwaves. Those experiencing brain fog often exhibit high delta brainwave activity. VEMI therapy helps restore cognitive clarity and

focus, leaving you with a refreshed and sharp mind.
Deep Relaxation
The VEMI system balances the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, encouraging deep relaxation and stress relief. Stress disrupts synchronization within the body, but VEMI's biosynchronized frequencies help restore balance between the brain, heart rate, and respiration, promoting a profound sense of calm.
Cellular Health
VEMI therapy establishes the optimal state for ionic exchange, creating the perfect conditions for cellular replication and overall cell health. This enhances the body’s natural ability to repair and regenerate.
Enhanced Energy Levels
Cellular voltage enhancement is observed through bioimpedance phase angle measurement, ensuring greater energy levels and vitality. When the voltage of the cell increases, the pH rises, allowing cells to repel toxins and uptake more nutrition and oxygen, which are then carried to the 11 organ systems.
EMF Resilience
The VEMI system helps reduce the impact of harmful electromagnetic environmental stressors, providing protection against disruptive frequencies.
Detoxification
The combination of vibroacoustic, electromagnetic, and infrared therapies supports the body's natural detoxification processes, improving fluid dynamics and enhancing overall health.
Enhances Other Therapies
The VEMI treatment enhances the effectiveness of other wellness practices. For example, at Dr. Ozone we biostack even further while simultaneously giving IV drips (e.g. glutathione or Myer’s cocktail) for greater absorption and uptake due to improved blood flow and fluid dynamics.
The PureWave VEMI Treatment is a revolutionary approach to wellness, offering a transformative experience that transcends traditional methods. By restoring coherence to your biofield, the VEMI system enhances mental clarity, deep relaxation, stress reduction, and optimal cellular health. With every successive session, the benefits compound, improving cellular function and overall well-being.

You push through every workout, but are you truly maximizing your results? Science shows that heat, infrared energy, and exercise together create the ultimate fat-burning, muscle-recovery, and detox experience. Enter 3D Training at HOTWORX West Tropicana —where heat works for you, not against you.
What is Three Dimensional (3D) Training?
3D Training combines Heat, Infrared Energy, and Exercise to create an optimal environment for calorie burn, endurance, and flexibility. It was developed by HOTWORX to shorten the time that is necessary to achieve the desired workout results of calorie burn, strength and toning, and detox. The 3D Training Method involves the fusion of three elements including (1) exercise for body movement, (2) heat to force body acclimation to a new workout environment, and (3) infrared energy to activate metabolism for detox and muscle recovery. Unlike traditional workouts, where heat is external (think crowded gyms or hot yoga), infrared heat penetrates the body, increasing circulation and muscle activation from the inside out.
HOTWORX uses its patented infrared saunas to promote a safe and effective heated studio environment with professional Virtual Trainers who instruct and motivate users with a “go at your own best pace” philosophy, making workouts personalized and customized for everyone.
The Infrared Factor
Infrared heat is a special kind of heat that warms you from the inside out— unlike traditional heat that just warms the air around you. It penetrates deep into your muscles, increasing circulation and helping your body work more efficiently. Some of the benefits of heated infrared workouts include: Torch More Calories – Infrared heat raises your core temperature, accelerating metabolism, resulting in a higher caloric burn and ultimately weight loss
Recover Faster – Infrared energy has the effect of strengthening and activating the regenerative processes in the human body. This is why workouts in a heated, infrared energy environment can help to accelerate workout recovery
Detox Naturally – Sweating in an Infrared sauna releases toxins, heavy metals, and impurities, and reduces the buildup of chemicals from processed foods, pollution, and everyday environmental exposure Train Smarter, Not Harder – The combination of infrared heat and an Isometric or High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout session makes a HOTWORX workout unlike any other fitness program available
At HOTWORX West Tropicana, everyone is supported and motivated to reach their fitness goals. No matter where you are in your journey, you’ll find a judgment-free, encouraging environment where we push each other to be our best. We believe in the power of community and are proud to be a pillar of health, wellness, and positivity
More Workout. Less Time.
There are two types of exercise that are most effective when practiced in a proper infrared setting such as a sauna. These two types of workouts are isometric and HIIT training. HOTWORX offers 12 different varieties of these workouts, with a HIIT session, such as HOT CYCLE, lasting 15 minutes long and Isometric sessions like HOT YOGA or HOT PILATES, lasting 30 minutes. You also have 24/7/365 access to HOTWORX, allowing you get your workout in, when it’s convenient to you.
Consistency & Cross Training
Consistency is key to getting the best results with the HOTWORX method. Sticking to a regular workout routine helps you track your progress and build strength and skill faster. Your muscles don’t get "shocked" or "confused"—they grow stronger through consistent training. At the same time, mixing up your workouts (cross-training) keeps things exciting and prevents boredom. It also challenges different muscles and helps you improve in every workout you do.
Stay consistent, stay motivated, and watch your strength and performance grow!

Microplastics in Our Diet >>>
The Hidden Health Crisis and How to Combat It
The Rising Risk of Microplastics in Our Diet: A Call to Action
In recent years, the issue of microplastics has become a growing concern for environmentalists, health professionals, and consumers alike. These tiny plastic particles, often less than five millimeters in size, are pervasive in our environment and have found their way into our food and water supply. The implications for our health and well-being are profound, making it imperative for us to take action to reduce our exposure to microplastics.
The Prevalence of Microplastics in Our Environment
Microplastics are virtually everywhere. They have been detected in the deepest parts of the ocean, the highest mountain peaks, and even in the air we breathe. These particles originate from a variety of sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic items, microbeads in personal care products, and synthetic fibers from clothing. As a result, microplastics have infiltrated our modern lifestyle, becoming an unwelcome part of our daily lives.
Health Risks Associated with Consuming Microplastics
The health risks of consuming microplastics are still being studied, but early research suggests that these particles can have detrimental effects on our bodies. Microplastics can carry harmful chemicals, such as pesticides and heavy metals, which can leach into our systems upon ingestion. Additionally, the physical presence of microplastics in our digestive system can cause inflammation and disrupt normal bodily functions. Some studies have even found microplastics in human organs, raising concerns about long-term exposure and potential health consequences.
The Bottled Water Challenge
While bottled water is often perceived as a convenient and safe alternative, it comes with its own set of challenges. The plastic bottles themselves can leach harmful chemicals into the water, especially when exposed to uncontrolled temperatures during travel and storage. Moreover, the quality of the water source is not always guaranteed, and additives for taste can further compromise the water's purity. The price of bottled water per gallon is often hidden in the cost of small bottles, making it an expensive and unsustainable option in the long run.
A Solution: Medical-Grade Filtration Systems
Amidst these alarming findings, it's essential to consider ways to mitigate our exposure to microplastics. One effective approach is through the use of advanced water filtration systems. Our company's ionized water machine, equipped with a medical-grade filtration system, offers a robust defense against microplastics in the water supply. By filtering out these particles, the machine ensures that the water you and your family consume is clean, safe, and free from harmful contaminants.
The Benefits of Drinking Ultra-Filtered Hydrogen-Rich Water

>>> LUCKY YOU!
Why Life's Setbacks Might Be Your Biggest Wins
Sometimes, it feels like the world is against us. We dwell on our misfortunes and convince ourselves we're the unluckiest person alive. We might wish for different choices or outcomes, only to blame bad luck when things don't go our way. While luck and random chance play a role in our lives, a simple truth often goes unnoticed: sometimes, not getting what we want is a hidden blessing in disguise.
We often want something so badly that when it doesn't happen, we feel frustrated and defeated. But in many cases, what seems like a loss at the moment turns out to be a redirection toward something even better. This applies to every aspect of life, from careers to relationships.
For example, I once reached out to someone in the poetry community to do a spoken word feature. At the time, I had been performing at open mics and landing features elsewhere, but I was eager to establish myself in my hometown of Las Vegas. I sent my resume, followed up, and waited. Nothing. Frustrated but determined, I reached out again. This time, the response was blunt:
"I don't know who you are; I know everyone in this city. I need you to do 15 open mics so I can see you with my own eyes and decide if you can handle the mic. That's how it works here."
That rejection hit hard. I could have let it drag me down, questioning my worth as a performer and writer. Instead, I kept writing and performing, and a few months later, I booked a spoken word
feature in Reno. From there, the opportunities kept coming. If I had done what that person said, I would have missed out on opponents like performing in Chicago, which had always been my dream. What felt like bad luck at the time turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened to me.
When we face setbacks, our first instinct is often to react emotionally. But if we take a step back and let things unfold, we may realize that what seemed like misfortune was actually leading us toward something more significant. Think about relationships. A painful breakup can feel like the end of the world...until, months or years later, you meet someone who truly values and respects you. What once felt like heartbreak became the best thing that ever happened to you.
The key to handling setbacks is resisting the urge to view them as pure misfortune. That's easier said than done, especially for those of us who struggle with mental health. When bad things happen, they can trigger past traumas, making us feel like we're stuck in a never-ending cycle of bad luck. But in these moments, we have to ask ourselves: do we want our life story to be a tragedy or a story of redemption?
For most of my life, I viewed my story as a tragedy. My childhood trauma shaped my decisions, and I convinced myself that luck was never on my side. But when I hit rock bottom with my mental health, I realized that I had the power to rewrite my story. It took years of work, and I still made mistakes along the way, but
By Steven Dee Kish
slowly, I shifted my mindset. As I embraced self-growth, things began to change. Was it pure luck? Or had opportunities always been there, and I was too focused on my struggles to see them?
Finding a hundred-dollar bill on the street? That's luck. Having the wind blow a hundreddollar bill out of your hands? That's bad luck. But navigating life's challenges? That's about choices. There will always be highs and lows, wins and losses. When we find ourselves in the valleys of life, we can either dwell on our perceived misfortune or use those moments to reflect, grow, and take action. That's how we make our own luck.
We only get one shot to take chances, make mistakes, and chase success. Some choices won't work out, and luck will have nothing to do with them. But in those moments of "bad luck," we can find our inner strength, make adjustments, and create opportunities for "good luck" to find us.
Whether you believe in luck or not, the one thing you must believe in is yourself. Life isn't about waiting for a lucky break; it's about making the most of what's in front of you. We can mourn the doors that close, or we can build a house full of new ones. The truth is, luck doesn't define us; our resilience does. And when we stop chasing luck and start creating our own opportunities, we realize that every so-called misfortune is just life's way of pushing us toward something greater.
>>> SPRING EQUINOX The Astrological Reset
Over the past few months, we’ve had multiple invitations to new beginnings. First came the Gregorian New Year—the time of resolutions and choosing a word of the year on the first of January. The Lunar New Year reminded us that different cultures follow different cycles of renewal. And now, as the Sun moves into Aries on March 20, we arrive at another powerful reset: the Spring Equinox and the Astrological New Year.
The word equinox comes from the Latin aequinoctium (aequus = equal, nox = night), symbolizing a moment when day and night stand in perfect balance. Starting on the Spring Equinox, where the day is equally split between day and night, each day after grows in light until the Summer solstice on June 20th. But this is more than just an astrological event—it’s an energetic threshold. Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, invites us to initiate, act, and embrace new beginnings. Maybe the resolutions of January didn’t stick. Maybe the Lunar New Year stirred something but didn’t fully land. The beauty of personal wellness and growth is understanding that there’s always another chance to realign, restart, and step into possibility.
So, what if we treated this moment as a cosmic invitation to reset and realign?
In astrology, Aries is the spark that ignites the entire zodiac cycle. As the first sign, Aries embodies initiation, fire, and movement. It is ruled by Mars, the planet of war, that doesn’t hesitate to act, it just moves forward! That’s why the Astrological New Year begins here. This is the season of bold beginnings, self-discovery, and forward momentum—perfect energy for setting fresh intentions.
Unlike the Gregorian New Year (January 1st), which falls in the middle of winter (a time of rest and hibernation), the Spring Equinox naturally fuels being in action. The days grow longer, the air warms up, and the energy of nature itself supports growth and expansion. Cultures across the world celebrate this time as a true seasonal reset:
• Nowruz, the Persian New Year, falls on the exact day of the Equinox, celebrating renewal with fire, feasts, and rituals for prosperity.
• Ostara, the Pagan festival, honors fertility, balance, and the planting of seeds—both literal and symbolic.
• Ancient agrarian societies relied on the Equinox as the signal to begin planting crops, aligning their lives with nature’s cycles.
This isn’t just a date on a calendar— it’s an energetic shift we can feel. Aries doesn’t wait for the “perfect time” to begin, it simply acts. That’s the invitation of this moment: What if you stopped waiting and just started?
The Spring Equinox is one of only two times a year when day and night are perfectly equal—a brief yet powerful moment of harmony. In astrology, balance is about the dynamic interplay of opposites.
Just as light and dark find equilibrium, we, too, are invited to examine where we may be out of balance in our lives. The Spring Equinox marks the start of Aries season, a time of momentum, independence, and bold action. But directly opposite Aries on the zodiac wheel is Libra, a sign that represents connection, reflection, and alignment. This astrological polarity reminds us that while Aries urges us forward, we must also check in with our relationships, values, and inner stability.
As in every New Year practice, reflection is key for the actions we will take in the upcoming cycle. Some questions to reflect on during this time:
• Where in my life do I need more balance?
• Am I prioritizing action over alignment, or vice versa?
• What new seeds am I planting, and what nurturing do they require?
The twelve zodiac signs of astrology are divided into three modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Each modality informs us how each sign may navigate change and understanding yours can help you align with this Equinox in a way that feels authentic rather than forced. Since the Spring Equinox is a Cardinal event (it begins a new season), this is a perfect time to check in with how you navigate transitions.
• Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are the initiators—they thrive on fresh starts and bold action.
• Fixed Signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) provide stability and endurance, but they can resist change.
• Mutable Signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) are adaptable and fluid, but they may struggle with direction.
Here’s how to work with your unique energy:
Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) –Recommit to Your Initiatives
You thrive on fresh starts, and this Equinox is your natural zone of power. You start things out strong but may struggle with followthrough.
• Equinox Focus: Recommit to what you’ve already begun rather than impulsively starting something new.
• Practice: Choose one initiative to fully nurture this season.
You prefer stability, and change can feel disruptive. There is a tendency to cling to old patterns instead of embracing new energy.
By Ilona Pamplona
• Equinox Focus: Let go of what no longer serves you and trust renewal.
• Practice: Do a decluttering ritual—physically or energetically—to create space for new growth.
Mutable Signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) – Ground Your Intentions
You’re adaptable and flow with change, but your focus may scatter. Because you absorb too many possibilities, commitment is hard for you.
• Equinox Focus: Choose one clear direction and take small, focused actions.
• Practice: Write down 3 specific steps to bring an idea to life this season.
Whether or not you know your zodiac sign’s modality, the Spring Equinox is an open invitation to embrace balance, renewal, and momentum. Below are general suggestions to connect with this energy shift:
1. Light a Candle to Honor the Return of Light
The Equinox is a moment of perfect balance, but from this point forward, the days grow longer than the nights. Lighting a candle symbolizes illumination, warmth, and new beginnings. If you want to set an intention, whisper it as you light the flame. You can even write your intentions down, and place this note under your candle so that the candle can activate what you want to create in the season ahead.
2. Step Into Nature to Reconnect
As the season changes, nature is a great reminder that growth happens in cycles. Spending even a few moments outside, be it a short walk, sitting in the sun, or noticing the trees and flowers around you, can help reset your energy and shift your mindset. If you have space, planting something new can be a simple way to symbolize fresh starts.
3. Sunrise or Sunset Reflection
The Spring Equinox signals the end of winter’s inward energy, inviting us to step outside, soak in the sunlight, and reconnect with nature and ourselves. After months of shorter days and more time indoors, journaling while connecting to the outdoors is a great way to harness the new season.
If journaling is new to you try these tips:
• Find a spot in the sun—whether it’s on a balcony, in a park, or near a window.
• Close your eyes and feel the warmth on your skin. Take a few deep
breaths.
• Write freely about the following prompts: How do I feel as I transition out of winter? What parts of myself feel ready to emerge or grow? Where in my life do I need more light, energy, or momentum?
4. Declutter & Refresh Your Space
Spring is an energetic reset and clearing out physical clutter can make room for new opportunities. Consider:
• Letting go of items that no longer feel aligned.
• Refreshing your wardrobe to reflect your evolving energy.
• Rearranging your space for fresh inspiration.
5. Affirmations for Balance & Renewal
Words carry energy, and affirmations help rewire your mind for this new season. You can create your own, or try speaking or journaling these Equinox affirmations:
• I welcome new beginnings with courage and clarity.
• Balance is natural—I embrace both action and rest.
• I trust the timing of my growth and transformation.
The Spring Equinox is a reminder that balance is dance between light and dark, action and rest, beginnings and endings. Maybe your New Year’s resolutions didn’t stick the way you hoped. Maybe the Lunar New Year stirred something new but didn’t fully take root. The beauty of life and nature’s cycles is that there’s always another chance to begin again. The Astrological New Year is yet another moment to welcome a fresh start, backed by the fire of the Aries season and the balancing energy of the Equinox.
Consider this your permission to reset, realign, and step into the new season with confidence. Whether you step into the sun, plant a seed, light a candle, or simply take one intentional breath, the universe is always reminding us that it’s never too late to start again.
I hope you embrace this cosmic restart and take one bold step forward this month!

THE TEMPLE RADIANCE LIFESTYLE with Gia
I am a 30 year corporate gal who took a leap of faith after the loss of my mother in 2022. I decided to bet on myself and take all the things I love and make them into my life’s work - passion for the Ikigai, as the Japanese would call it. I knew what I loved, and what I didn’t know was how long my nervous system would take to un-corporate itself; to stabilize and not have the need to work on spreadsheets and book back to back calls when Monday rolled around.
I dove HEAD FIRST into magic, into a lifestyle and way of living I now call Temple Radiance. I read all the books that tell me how simple life can be and how wonderful it will be when I’m finally swimming in the higher frequencies, once declared un-knowable, and now heretofore available to us in the blink of an eye. I researched science, math, religion, ancient channeled work, psychology, metaphysics, quantum “stuff” and all of it said almost the exact same thing. What it said was, you are all that is. There is nothing outside of you. There is an entire YOuniverse right within that skin suit you think is who you are. Stay with me, join me, explore with me as we traverse the deep, glorious world of our consciousness. You might wonder, if it’s just you here then who is Gia? Well, that’s easy- I am just a mirror to you. What you read and experience during our journey together is only telling you more about you - your magic, and that you truly are the master of your life. Welcome to the future you - my name is Gia, I’ll be your tour guide.

GLP-1s for Fat Loss But What About Our Muscle?
GLP-1 receptor agonists, like Ozempic and Wegovy, are taking the weightloss world by storm, touted as game-changers in the fight against obesity. These medications work by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, slow gastric emptying, and reduce appetite. In addition to curbing hunger, GLP-1s can quiet the voice of emotional eating and help disrupt addictive food patterns, allowing users to break free from cycles of overeating.
But while these medications can help shed pounds, an important question remains: are we prioritizing our muscle mass as much as fat loss?
Beneath the excitement lies a hidden concern about America’s “muscle deficit” —not just as a gym problem, but a nationwide shortfall in strength, resilience, and metabolic health. If fat is the villain, muscles are the unsung heroes of longevity—and preserving them is far more crucial than many realize.
Why a Healthy Weight Matters for Longevity
Maintaining a healthy weight plays a foundational role in promoting health and preventing chronic diseases. Excess body fat, particularly visceral fat (around our organs like the heart, lungs, and liver) increases the risk of metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. Studies show that obesity is associated with reduced life expectancy, cutting an average of 6 to 7 years off one’s lifespan in severe cases. [Moreover, being overweight is linked to inflammation, impaired immunity, and decreased mobility—all of which contribute to premature aging and a diminished quality of life.
Just as important as achieving a healthy weight is maintaining balanced insulin regulation. Insulin resistance—a hallmark of conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes—not only accelerates aging but also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, and neurodegenerative conditions. Stable insulin levels help regulate energy, reduce inflammation, and prevent metabolic dysfunction, all of which are key to living longer, healthier lives.
Muscles: The True Organs of Longevity
While weight management and insulin regulation are critical, one of the most overlooked aspects of longevity is muscle mass. Muscles are not just about physical strength or aesthetics; they are metabolic powerhouses that regulate glucose metabolism, store amino acids, and support overall health. Research consistently shows that higher muscle mass is associated with better health outcomes and a longer life expectancy.
Muscle Mass and Disease Prevention
A study published in the PLOS ONE examined the association between low skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and all-cause mortality risk. The findings indicated that individuals with lower SMI had a higher risk of mortality, underscoring the importance of maintaining muscle mass for longevity. For women, higher muscle mass is associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis and sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss), which significantly impact quality of life. For men, greater muscle mass has been linked to improved cardiovascular health and reduced risk of metabolic syndrome.
Muscle mass plays a critical role in hormone regulation for both men and women, as it is closely linked to increased levels of testosterone, growth hormone, and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), all of which are essential
for metabolic health.
Muscle Mass and Cognitive Health
Muscle mass is also strongly correlated with brain health. Studies reveal that individuals with higher levels of muscle mass have a lower risk of dementia and cognitive decline. A 2024 study presented at the Radiological Society of North America's annual meeting revealed that older adults with reduced skeletal muscle mass, particularly in the temporalis muscle (a fan-shaped muscle in the head that helps you bite and chew), faced a 60% higher risk of developing dementia. This finding highlights the critical role of muscle mass in cognitive health, suggesting that preserving muscle may serve as a protective factor against cognitive decline and age-related neurodegeneration.
Muscle Loss: A Hidden Concern
While GLP-1s are highly effective for weight loss, they come with an important caveat: undereating, low protein intake, and mineral deficient diets will not maintain and build healthy muscle mass. With prolonged suppressed appetite and calorie deficits, the body may even begin breaking down muscle tissue for energy, especially if protein intake or resistance training is insufficient. Over time, loss of muscle mass can negatively impact metabolism, strength, and overall health.
How to Create Healthy Habits While Preserving and Even Building Muscle While Using GLP-1s
If you're using GLP-1s, this is the perfect time to build lasting habits that support a strong, healthy body—beyond just nutrition. Prioritizing sleep, hydration, movement, fitness, and mental well-being ensures that once your GLP-1 protocol ends, you’ve already ingrained a sustainable routine. This not only helps maintain progress but also reduces the risk of backsliding, setting you up for long-term success.
GLP-1s do lead to a reduced caloric intake, so it might be hard to build new muscle while on a protocol. Here are some strategies to protect and maybe even build some muscle mass, while creating healthy, sustainable habits:
Engage in Hypertrophic Muscle Training
Resistance training is key to preserving and building muscle. Focus on hypertrophy-specific exercises, such as lifting heavier weights with moderate repetitions (e.g., 8-12 reps per set). Compound movements like squats, deadlifts, and bench presses are especially effective at targeting multiple muscle groups. Incorporating functional fitness movements, such as kettlebell swings or farmer’s carries, can further enhance strength and stability by mimicking real-world movements. Adding a mix of both functional exercises and traditional weight training provides a well-rounded approach to building resilience, improving coordination, and reducing injury risk.
Prioritize Protein Intake
To support muscle preservation, aim for a daily protein intake of at least 1.2 to 2.0 grams per kilogram of body weight. Include high-quality protein sources such as lean meats, eggs, fish, legumes, and dairy products. For plant-based eaters, combine complementary proteins like rice and beans to ensure adequate amino acid intake. My favorite clean, sustainable, and easy to digest, protein powder is Paleo Pro.
If you’re finding it challenging to hit your protein intake goals with food, opt for protein smoothies. Keep them balanced with greens or bananas, berries, and dates.
Stay Hydrated!
Hydration is essential for muscle mass preservation because water is crucial for protein synthesis, nutrient delivery, and muscle repair. Proper hydration helps maintain electrolyte balance, which supports muscle contraction and prevents cramping. Dehydration can impair muscle recovery, reduce performance, and increase the risk of muscle breakdown due to elevated stress hormones like cortisol. Drinking enough water ensures optimal metabolic function and promotes the maintenance of lean muscle tissue.
Incorporate Muscle-Supportive Supplements
• Creatine: Enhances muscle strength and recovery while promoting lean muscle mass. It’s also good for your brain function!
• Essential Amino Acids (EAAs): Supports protein synthesis and muscle repair.
• Collagen Peptides: Beneficial for connective tissue and joint health, which can improve performance during resistance training.
• Fiber: Psyllium husk in capsules or powder that can be added to water, juice, or smoothies.
Monitor Body Composition
Use tools like DEXA scans or bioelectrical impedance analysis to ensure you’re losing fat, not muscle, during weight loss. This can help you adjust your diet and exercise routine as needed.
And remember, if you’re unsure how to eat in a supportive way to your GLP-1 protocol, or even how to reverse out of this diet once you’re no longer using a GLP-1, get support from a registered dietitian!
BUT don’t forget the basics:
• Get outdoors for fresh air and move your body in any way, daily!
• Break a sweat at least 3 times/week: Whether this is a brisk walk, a 5 mile run, or anything in between.
• Integrate tools that lower your stress and help you feel grounded. i.e. journaling, meditation, painting, listening to music.
• Get enough sleep. We often talk about an average 8 hours of sleep. But your bedtime matters just as much as the total number of hours you sleep when it comes to getting proper rest. Learn to work with your own circadian rhythm and prioritize sleep quality. This helps both your body and brain recover.
• Do things that bring you JOY!
If you struggle to maintain muscle mass during your weight loss journey, focus on building lean muscle once you’ve reached your goal. The strategies mentioned earlier are just as relevant here. After completing a GLP-1 regimen, your appetite will likely increase, making it crucial to gradually raise your caloric intake. Pay close attention to the quality of the foods you consume—prioritize protein to support muscle repair and growth, and include
a healthy balance of fats and carbohydrates to fuel your body, brain, and hormone function effectively.
The Role of Peptides in Muscle and Tissue Health
GLP-1s like Ozempic and Wegovy are peptides, which opens the door to discussing the advancements in other injectable peptide therapies. Emerging peptides such as BPC-157, Thymosin Beta-4 (TB-500), CJC-1295, and Ipamorelin are gaining attention for their potential in tissue repair, muscle growth, and overall healing. While much of the evidence is anecdotal, here’s what we know so far:
BPC-157: Can promote wound healing and tissue repair by enhancing angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) and collagen production.
Thymosin Beta-4 (TB-500): May support cellular regeneration, particularly in soft tissue, by modulating actin-binding proteins and promoting healing.
CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin: Can stimulate the release of human growth hormone (HGH), which supports muscle repair, increases lean muscle mass, and enhances fat metabolism.
Potential Benefits
• Muscle Growth: Peptides that increase growth hormone release can improve muscle mass and strength, particularly when combined with resistance training.
• Recovery and Repair: BPC-157 and TB-500 are particularly useful for athletes or individuals recovering from injuries, as they accelerate healing and reduce inflammation.
• Anti-Aging: By supporting collagen production and tissue repair, these peptides may also have anti-aging benefits for skin, joints, and muscles.
Peptide therapies are still an emerging field, and their potential for supporting health, longevity, and muscle preservation is increasingly being studied. Currently, the FDA has not approved injectable peptides for human use. This hasn’t stopped retailers from selling them, so as always, it’s crucial to work with knowledgeable healthcare providers to ensure safe and effective use.
A Reminder About Weight Loss and Longevity
Beyond shedding pounds, it’s about preserving the very structures that sustain life: muscle mass, metabolic health, and resilience. While GLP-1s can be a supportive and efficient tool for weight loss, they are not a magic cure. Without building healthy, sustainable habits—such as regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and stress management—you risk returning to where you started. True wellness comes from consistent efforts that support both your immediate goals and your long-term health. By combining resistance training, optimal nutrition, and prioritizing your mental wellbeing, we can ensure that the pursuit of weight loss doesn’t come at the cost of long-term vitality. After all, the goal isn’t just to be lighter on the scale—it’s to be stronger, sharper, and ready to live life to its fullest potential.

ARE SCENTED CANDLES, INCENSE, AND PLUG-IN SCENTS
Harmful to Your Health?
Self-care is supposed to be about nourishment. Soothing baths, calming candles, and the comforting embrace of a home that smells of fresh lavender or warm vanilla. But what if the very rituals we turn to for relaxation are silently detrimental to our health? Many of the scented products we associate with wellness—candles, plug-ins, incense—are often laced with chemicals and carcinogens that can disrupt hormones, irritate lungs, and pollute the air we breathe. Kind of ironic, right?
Before my research, scented candles were a nightly practice, both next to my bed to set the mood for rest and sleep, and lining the ledge of my bathtub for relaxation. I also used scented plug-ins in each bathroom to keep them smelling fresh, and burned incense each morning as sort of a grounding ritual.
It felt comforting, that is, until I saw the headlines about scented products’ role in hormone disruption and respiratory issues. Here’s what I learned.
The Truth About Scented Candles
Despite being a self-care favorite, studies have found¹ that scented candles can release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like toluene and benzene, which are linked to respiratory problems. A 2024 Annals of Medicine and Surgery study² found that burning candles in poorly ventilated spaces can produce pollution comparable to secondhand smoke. Soot and smoke are also an issue when it comes to candles, and a result of incomplete combustion of the wax and wick. If you want to continue utilizing candles in your space, here are some tips on how to reduce the release of pollutants in your home.
• Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before each burn. Long wicks cause large, sooty flames.
• Avoid drafts from fans, vents, or windows, which disturb the flame and increase soot.
• Choose beeswax or soy candles with natural fragrance oils. Synthetic fragrances with phthalates can release harmful chemicals.
What About Incense Sticks?
I grew up in a Buddhist family, where incense was essential for purifying space and as a symbolic offering. So, you can imagine my surprise when I learned that incense smoke releases particulate matter and VOCs like formaldehyde. According to the National Institutes of Health³, long-term exposure to incense smoke in small, unventilated spaces may increase respiratory risks. To reduce harm, burn incense in a large room, ensure you have good airflow, do not inhale incense smoke up close, and avoid any incense made from synthetic materials and fragrances.
Plug-In Scents and Room Sprays?
Plug-ins and room sprays can also release VOCs such as formaldehyde and phthalates, which irritate airways and disrupt hormones⁴. Frequent use can cause headaches and trigger asthma. I recommend not using these altogether, and have made it a point to purge these products from my home.
Here Are Some Safer Ways to Scent Your Home
You can still enjoy a fragrant home without compromising your health by opting for these more natural methods:
• Use an air purifier: Choose a HEPA-filter model (avoid ozone or ionizers) and replace filters regularly.
• Opt for beeswax candles: They burn cleaner and may release negative ions that purify the air.
• Mason jar simmers on candle warmers: Fill a mason jar with water, orange peels, and cinnamon sticks. Place it on a candle warmer for a flamefree, natural fragrance.
• High-quality essential oil diffusers: Use pure oils in ventilated areas. Don't forget to clean the diffuser regularly.
• Charcoal air purifiers: Activated charcoal bags naturally absorb odors.
• Houseplants: Peace lilies and spider plants filter indoor air while also adding greenery which can significantly liven up a room.
What About the Bathroom?
Bathrooms are usually small and poorly ventilated, which can cause plug-ins and other fragranced products to become a source of VOC buildup. Try these alternatives:
• Wooden flower bouquet with essential oils: I like to buy bouquets of wooden flowers and add a few drops of essential oils to the petals daily for a more natural fragrance.
• Baking soda jars: Absorb odors naturally with small, open jars of baking soda.
• Eucalyptus bundles: Hang these in your shower. The steam will fill your bath space with a beautiful herbal aroma.
• DIY room sprays: Mix distilled water with essential oils like lavender or lemon for a safe, homemade option.
Self-Care Safely
True self-care isn’t about eliminating scents altogether, but about making informed choices. By choosing natural products, improving ventilation,
and avoiding synthetic chemicals, you can still enjoy a beautifully scented home without compromising your health.

When we look at plants, we can quite literally consider the information shared like learning from an elder in our community. Firstly, we know that plants (and nature as a whole) have so much intelligence to share with us, both unspoken as well as scientifically identified. “People are not aware that we have these ancient relationships, we are genetically connected to these plants and we have been evolving with them for thousands and thousands of years. The plants were always here before humans which make them our teachers and our elders, they are very wise beings,” true words spoken by Rosemary Gladstar, who is considered by some to be the godmother of modern herbalism in America. She goes on to explain how the Elder was used to plant at the edge of gardens as protectors as well as bringers of joy.
The elder tree (Sambucus nigra) has been a source of fascination and utility for centuries. Known for its distinctive clusters of small, white flowers, and deep purple-black berries, the elder tree has long been celebrated in folklore, medicine, and culinary traditions. The elder tree is a deciduous shrub or tree that can grow 10-12 feet tall and sometimes reach 20 feet. The trees are hardy and grow in various settings, with moderate sunlight and a space where their roots can spread. As with most herbals of great glory it has been used from ancient civilizations to modern wellness trends with a reputation for powerful and diverse array of applications.
The Folklore
The elder tree is native to Europe, but it has spread to parts of North America and Asia. Throughout history, it has held a special place in various cultures. The folklore of the Elder is very rich and prevalent through the ancient Celts, Druids, and even Scandinavia. The elder tree was considered to be a very well respected plant and often referred to as the Elder woman or Goddess, which was planted in backyards to protect against mischievous spirits, also thought to be helpful near cemeteries to allow peace. It was used tied onto livestock or above barns to ward off evil spirits, however this can also be seen as it is a natural pest repellent. It was believed to house fairies in the hollow wood. Yet in the Middle Ages the Elder was associated with witches, people believed a witch could turn into an elder.
There were a range of auspicious narratives as well as cautionary tales to prevent misuse, such as not sleeping under the tree or burning its wood. The sap makes it scream and spit while burning, making it forbidden to burn the wood lest the goddess would take her blessings back. However, this superstition likely has a basis in practical reality- elderwood, when burned, releases harmful fumes due to its cyanogenic glycosides. It was even said that cooking under an elder wood fire would poison the food, which is also very valid as it can produce toxic smoke, making the food unsafe to eat. In poorly ventilated homes, such smoke could be deadly, thus reinforcing the belief that burning elders brought misfortune. Elderwood is particularly suited for crafting whistles and pipes, as its branches contain a soft core that can be hollywood out, leaving a hard, easily-polished wood. The wood of the elder has long been used for wands, in fact the most powerful wand in the Harry Potter series is made from elder wood.
Unfortunately, the elder-mother, once likely a revered figure associated with the healing powers of her tree, eventually became feared during
Elderflowers and Elderberries
Elderflowers bloom in late spring and early summer. They are known for their fragrant, sweet scent, and delicate white color. In Europe they have a great history in culinary traditions, often used to make elderflower cordial, soup, syrup, or liquor (such as St. Germain) for beloved cocktails or dishes. Traditional medicine proves these flowers are rich in flavonoids, essential oils, and organic acids. The white/yellow flowers are particularly rich in rutin and isoquercitrin. These compounds are valued for their anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy properties, especially in treating conditions affecting the upper respiratory tract and sinuses. Elderflowers help soothe inflamed tissues in the sinuses, reduce mucus production, and dry up excess secretions. This makes them an excellent remedy for allergies, colds, flus, or respiratory infections in the form of tea or extract. I am happy to say we have a delicious blend called, “I’mperfect”, sold at the Las Vegas farmers market that includes elderflower for the whole family to enjoy and build their immune system daily (a plus- it has butterfly pea flower in the blend so it turns a beautiful purple hue that the kids love!) Elderflower is rich in phenolic acids, which increase by almost 50% with a 20 minute infusion time (as suggested for our blends) which all support antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective effects. It’s also amazing for skin health and so much more.
Christian times.
Elderberries, the dark purple-black fruit that ripens in late summer, are perhaps the most famous part of the elder tree. Elderberries are toxic when raw due to the presence of cyanogenic glycosides (compounds that can release cyanide), they are safe to consume when cooked. Rich in vitamins A and C, antioxidants, and anthocyanins. These compounds support white blood cell production, help block viruses from entering cells, which inhibits viral replication, and reduce inflammation, alleviating symptoms. The berries are best known for their immuneboosting properties which have been found to reduce the severity and duration of colds and flu, likely due to the high content of flavonoids and polyphenols. The deep color berries are commonly used in elderberry syrups, jams, and wines. Several studies have demonstrated its effects against viral infections, particularly reducing symptoms of influenza and other respiratory properties.
Elderberries can contain small amounts of cyanogenic glycosides, but when properly prepared by cooking, fermenting or pickling it neutralizes any toxic effects and makes their protective effects accessible against colds and flu. Elderberries are rich in flavonoids, particularly anthocyanins, which are known for their strong antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These compounds help block viruses from entering cells, inhibit viral replication, and reduce respiratory inflammation, alleviating symptoms. Additionally, elderberries are high in Vitamin C, which supports white blood cell production, and contain phenolic acids and procyanidins that further boost immune function.
Respecting Nature
The German physician Michael Ettmueller referred to it as “the medicine chest of the country people”. Ointments made from the leaves were commonly used for bruises, sprains, and wounds. When applied topically, elder leaves break down the inflammation and act as a soothing agent, often offering relief from pain. The bark was known for its emetic properties as well as an expectorant and diuretic. However caution again with any plant and knowing which parts to use, as the bark and leaves should only be used externally as higher dosage can be harmful when consumed.
The elder tree is a remarkable plant with a rich history, versatile uses, and powerful medicinal properties. This is a valuable asset to any herbal medicine chest or traditional healing practice. Learning to communicate with our bodies and how they interact with various plants (and foods) is how this historical knowledge has been passed down from the plant teachers to our human teachers and herbalists who documented this history which is now backed by scientific studies. Respecting nature and this wisdom is of utmost value to the healing journey.
