TCM PATIENTS FIRST Summer is quickly approaching and recreational dispensaries are gearing up to open next month.

Hopefully, the new focus on recreational does not leave our medical patients in the dust. Legislators are already dead set on removing the right to grow for patients, and many fear that removal of the medical program entirely is the next step. There are a multitude of extremely ill medical patients that have always grown their own plants, these are not the patients that are frequenting the medical dispensaries so why not leave them alone. Let them grow their own medicine and retain the ability to utilize the whole plant. The medical program needs to stay in place and the money that dispensaries bring in from recreational users needs to offset the cost of medical cannabis products for patients.

Tahoe Cannabis Magazine was created by patients, for patients. Our focus has and always will be our local, medical cannabis patients. We will continue to add fun and interesting features to the magazine in order to keep it fresh and relevant for our readers. We will never lose sight of why we started this project which is why we remain accessible to readers and open to new ideas that you may have. Feel free to shoot us an email or give us a call.

With recreational use, we must consider whether or not our dispensaries are prepared. Will Nevada run out of inventory? Will medical patients be unable to obtain their medicine? This month, Josh Ranck looks at the statistics and asks those very same questions. Additionally, attorney Karena K. Dunn reviews the Nevada DUI laws which pertain to all cannabis users. And, in his rant this month, our very own Rob Ruckus speaks to the cultivators in hopes of also protecting our patients.

As always, we have included a few interviews with some amazing local artists. This issue also includes a pictorial feature of the one and only, DoobieDuck whose male plant photos, fun dioramas and awesome hummingbird shots have been featured all over the world. Happy Father’s Day to all of the awesome fathers out there. I hope you all enjoy this issue.

California’s Medical Cannabis Regulation & Safety Act (MCRSA)

he California Bureau of Marijuana Control released the long-awaited proposed text of regulations for medical cannabis testing laboratories last week. The proposed California medical cannabis testing regulations surpass the previously perceived

stringent cannabis testing regulations in place in Nevada and Oregon.

The regulations’ thoroughness is the result of two years of extensive work by three State agencies. There is a digestible, yet dense 46-pg abridged version and a more reasoned 294-page document that contains much more than testing lab regulations. This document also contains proposed regulations for other cannabis businesses and the rules for their operation and what reaches the dispensary shelves.

Altogether, it is evident that the State of California aims to reign in the medical cannabis industry with patient safety foremost in their deliberations. Significant effort was made to define terms and provide impressive detail across all topics from how an accredited testing lab should perform its internal quality control (QC) program to what type of container and cold storage conditions should be used to transport samples to the lab. I was appeased to read that test results are to be presented in terms of dry weight, something we were never successful in adopting in the State of Nevada.

Homogeneity testing will also be required.

There is a lot of superb guidance in the proposed medical cannabis regulations especially for sampling, method validation, quality management and the QC requirements that laboratories will need to institute. However, if the proposed regulations advance, there will be very real challenges ahead for California medical cannabis testing labs in terms of documentation requirements under ISO17025 accreditation, expanded testing methods and adulterant lists to be monitored. In addition, a new breakout of action limits based on the cannabis product category for solvents, pesticides and heavy metals. The categories vary by adulterant, but in general there is a distinction made between products to be inhaled versus eaten or transdermal.

Challenges will also exist for cannabis growers and producers who will have a substantially higher adulterant-free bar to clear their flower and products through to the dispensary. More of their products will be diverted to testing with mandatory 0.5% per batch with sample duplicates also required at time of sampling.

Yet there is more to come as both Nevada and California are in the final throes of settling on temporary regulations for recreational cannabis, including the pass/fail test criteria. While the similarities between medical and retail are obvious, the same safety concerns should exist for patients as well as for consumer public health. Exacting the same stringent medical marijuana testing requirements onto the retail market appears to be the only option.

Let’s Hear it for the Boys THE ROLE OF THE MALE PLANT

annabis flowers are female, a fact often lost in this male dominated industry. It is a dioecious plant which means that male and female flowers are not produced on each plant but on one or the other. It is like humans in this regard. This trait allows us to enjoy the sinsemilla flowers because we can keep males away from them before they pollinate the females and produce seeds.

If cannabis was monoecious and both male and female flowers appeared on the same plant, it would be difficult or impossible to prevent seeds from growing. The closest thing we might be able to achieve would be something like the seedless watermelon which isn’t truly seedless. In that situation diploid and tetraploid varieties are bred together to make a triploid watermelon, which is basically sterile and not capable of forming any seeds except very rarely.

We don’t see male cannabis plants very much because at present they are only useful for breeding and will likely remain that way for a long time. While they can be ingested like the female plant, it is not recommended, especially for smoking due to the fact that they produce pollen that no one wants in their lungs (actual pollen, not kief, which was sometimes referred to as pollen the past).

Males often grow the tallest and seem to have the most vigor, but unless you intend to breed new varieties or make seeds, you will have to get males as far away from the garden and as soon as possible or risk an accidental pollination and several to hundreds of seeds.

Why are a few random seeds not a great thing? The short answer is, at present, bag appeal and THC content still determine end-user demand. Consistency is close behind that. Males introduce new genes and traits that in most cases probably contribute to the overall health of the plant and the resulting overall quality of its finished product, but that may not be consistent in either THC/CBD ratios, smell, or appearance. When these factors are not as important, a few seeds can be a great thing, especially for those gardeners who find themselves in parts of the world where decent cannabis seeds can be hard to come across. However, for better or worse just a few seeds are unlikely to have been created by pollen released from a true male but rather from a hermaphrodite.

Hermaphrodite flowers prove that male plants are even somewhat dispensable to female plants, at least for a generation or two, although females would prefer to have males present as soon as they began producing stigmas. During late flowering, females often produce these hermaphrodite male flowers in a last minute attempt to produce seeds so their genes can be preserved for another generation

where they might be able to be pollinated by a true male. Plants are not unique in this ability; it has recently been discovered that female sharks, as well as other female animals like frogs, can produce offspring without a male. It is the last strategy but the alternative is an end to that unique genome. Reproducing asexually like this seems to work for a period of time in the wild but won’t allow the plant to adapt to its environment over longer periods of time.

Some varieties, like the ever popular Girl Scout Cookies seem to prefer this method of reproduction, likely making it one of the true hermaphrodites. Most other varieties will only produce these hermaphroditic flowers when they encounter serious stress. This is one way that feminized seeds are produced and underscores a very important fact which would seem obvious by now: clone-only varieties like Sour Diesel, Grandaddy Purple and others are only female. There is no true Sour Diesel male to pollinate a female and create stable male and female seeds. There are the hermaphrodite male flowers that the female has produced, but the resulting seeds will be all female.

A male is required for a female to produce male seeds.

As humans, we are each unique genomes and there is no way to reproduce another exact copy of ourselves except by cloning.

For obvious ethical reasons this has not been done, although there are claims to the contrary.

Commercial farm animals like cattle are now often produced this way for the same reasons that we clone cannabis plants.

Yet, preserving a genome beyond its natural life cycle has effects that are still not well understood and are undesirable. Issues such as reduced vigor and lower production of desirable traits are very common problems with older clones. For this reason, sexual reproduction with male pollen is the most sustainable method to preserve desirable genetics over long periods of time and this requires a male. The resulting seeds will not be exact replicas, but over time and with some basic breeding principles, it should be possible to isolate some of the most elusive and desirable traits into stable breeding seed stock.

Even as more and more people are breeding, do not count on seeing many male plants around. They’ll still have to be contained so their pollen doesn't become airborne and pollinate other flowers. It seems like they will eventually be utilized more and should also begin to have a larger role in the creation of new varieties as different states and countries implement different medical and recreational programs, making it easier for more people to work with cannabis in general. In conclusion, please remember, male plants play an increasingly important role in this rapidly developing industry and are not something to be afraid of but a resource that we may need to start leaning on sooner than we think.

DRIVERS BEWARE Whether you’re a medical marijuana patient or choose to regularly enjoy marijuana recreationally, chances are that every time you drive, you are breaking the law. Driving under the influence laws do not require you to be “under the influence”.

If you are found to have 2 nanograms of THC or 5 nanograms of marijuana metabolite in your blood, you can be convicted of DUI. Although THC leaves a person’s system relatively quickly, marijuana metabolite can remain in your body for weeks, especially in regular users.

a person should wait to drive at least 3 hours after using marijuana, yet others say 10 hours. The amount of marijuana used and percentage of THC can greatly affect the length and degree of impairment, in addition to the person’s tolerance.

What should a regular marijuana user do? Obviously, the best advice to a regular user is to simply not drive. Unfortunately, not many people have this as an option, especially in Nevada.

Realistically, most regular marijuana users drive daily. With this being reality, it is important for all marijuana users to understand not only the laws, but also their rights.

Some practical tips for drivers who use marijuana include, never smoke or use marijuana in your vehicle, never carry marijuana or marijuana paraphernalia in your vehicle, and when driving, don’t wear the same clothing you wore when you smoked marijuana. These three tips are directly related to the distinct, and many times, pungent odor of raw and burnt marijuana. The single most common reason that police officers conduct investigations for marijuana DUIs is the odor. Once a police officer notices the odor of raw or burnt marijuana during a traffic stop, the odds are very high that a DUI investigation will follow.

Despite the marijuana metabolite issue, every marijuana user needs to do everything possible to ensure they never drive while impaired by marijuana. Unfortunately, there is no steadfast rule on how long you need to wait to drive after using marijuana, to ensure you are not driving while still impaired. Currently, due to the lack of reliable scientific testing, even experts vary greatly on how long a person, who has used marijuana, needs to wait before driving. Some say

Should a driver find themselves at a traffic stop that seems to be turning into a DUI investigation, what are their rights? In the State of Nevada, a driver is required to provide a police officer with their driver’s license, proof of registration and proof of insurance. Should the police officer continue to ask additional questions involving use or possession of marijuana, a driver is not required to answer those questions. A person has the right to politely decline to answer any further questions. If a

police officer asks a driver to get out of the vehicle, the driver is required to comply with that request. If the officer asks the driver to perform field sobriety tests, a driver has the right to politely decline to participate in any field sobriety tests. If the police officer asks to just “check your eyes”, a driver has the right to politely decline. This “checking of the eyes” is actually a part of the field sobriety testing, and drivers have no legal requirement to participate in these tests.

These roadside tests are utilized by police officers as a tool to investigate impaired drivers. Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, commonly referred to as “FSTs”, were developed for detecting drivers impaired by alcohol, specifically. Many studies were done to “standardize” these tests to aid officers investigating alcohol DUIs; however, law enforcement has expanded these tests and use them in drug DUI investigations. One of the problems with this expansion is that no studies have been done to determine the reliability of these tests in detecting marijuana impairment.

Police Officers are looking for “clues of impairment” from the moment the driver comes to the officer’s attention, whether the vehicle is speeding, weaving, running a red light, etc. Once the officer contacts the driver, the officer is looking for all types of “clues”, such as red, watery eyes, slurred speech, droopy eyelids, lethargic movements, eyelid or body tremors, difficulty concentrating, and as mentioned earlier, odor of marijuana. Based on the officer’s observations, the officer may ask the driver if they have smoked marijuana, when and how much, and if there is any marijuana in the vehicle. Although it is legal to possess certain amounts of marijuana, admitting there is marijuana in the vehicle will most likely lead to a DUI investigation. Again, the driver is not required to answer any questions beyond license, registration and insurance.

If the officer believes they have probable cause to arrest the driver, the officer will ask the driver to submit to a blood test. The driver can refuse to consent to the blood test; however, unlike refusing to do to the FSTs, if a driver refuses the blood test, DMV will revoke the driver’s license for 1 year. If the driver refuses, the officer can apply for a search warrant and if the judge grants the search warrant, the driver will be forced to do a blood test, and the driver will still lose their license for one year.

Bottomline, regular marijuana users need to be aware of the DUI laws, and understand that as the law stands today in Nevada, you do not need to be impaired to be convicted of a DUI. Understanding the laws, you also need to understand your rights.

Coming to Nevada?

I don’t want to cause any panic, but let’s look at some numbers.

evada has approximately 2.9 million residents.

Of those residents, 27,953 hold medical marijuana identification cards. That’s almost ten people-per-thousand who have medical access to cannabis. To be honest, I thought this number would be larger.

In November 2016, 1.1 million Nevadans turned out to vote on Question 2, which allows for recreational cannabis sales. Of those 1.1 million voters, 602,400 of them cast for the legislative initiative. To be honest, I also thought this number would be larger.

These are more than six-hundred thousand assumed customers living in the state.

Last year, 42,936,109 tourists visited Las Vegas. As of August 2016, one-in-eight Americans claim that they use marijuana.

That’s 13% of the United States’ population … or 5,581,694 tourists who will descend on Las Vegas’ dispensaries like a pack of slavering hyenas.

At a glance:

27,952 MMJ patients vs. 6,184,094 potential rec users (tourists + residents who voted yes on Question 2).

That enormous potential customer base will be hard for businesses to ignore.

And what happens July 1st, when recreational sales start? If we divide the 5,581,694 potential annual cannabis tourists by 12 months, that’s 725,620 recreational purchasers just in July. Don’t forget about the 602,400 people who voted yes on Question 2, the group of assumed local purchasers.

Projections for July:

The same 27,952 MMJ patients will be up against 1,328,020 possible recreational customers.

The question on every patient’s mind: Will there be enough medicine to go around?

The answer isn’t clearly available. Some dispensaries are in a better position than others, especially those with the ability to produce their own stock. Joseph, store manager at Silver Sage Wellness: “We've always been patient-focused, and that won't change just because we also sell to rec users. We’re taking the initiative and putting steps in place to provide the best patient experience possible. We’re fortunate to have a cultivation license and are confident we’ll be able to meet our patients’ needs as well as our recreational users’ needs.”

Matt Gardiner, VP of Shango in Las Vegas, has been mulling over the problem of a potential cannabis shortage: “Las Vegas is like nothing else. Colorado, Washington, and other rec states are experiencing an increase in canna-tourism, but Vegas is already one of the most visited cities in the world. We just don’t know what to expect.

Things are moving so quickly now that it’s inevitable that some places will run short on product.”

Inevitably bringing us back to the primary concern medical marijuana patients have, that they’ll suffer from a rec-driven shortage.

Conversations I’ve had with other industry professionals reflect Gardiner and Joseph’s sentiments, particularly when it comes to patient services. Expect dispensaries to cater to their medical patients to the best of their ability, but don’t expect them to sit on product for medical patients. This

definitely applies to specialty products like edibles, extracts, and topicals, which are on the rise among all users. Some patients can’t or don’t smoke flowers, and these specialty products are their only treatment option. Gardiner is also making plans to ensure patient services aren’t interrupted: “Rec exists because of what was laid out by medical patients.

We at Shango will do everything we can to make sure our medical patients get the products they need.”

While more Nevada cultivation operations are on the way, the questions on everyone’s mind are: Have the limited number of growers produced enough crop for recreational rollout? And, do they have enough in pre-production to sustain the state going forward?

It’s impossible to answer this question right now. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens come July 1st.

Although, looking at other recreational states as a guide, medical marijuana patients are in danger of losing out to recreational users, and dispensaries are fueling this problem. Oregon recently divided dispensary oversight between two separate organizations.

Medical cannabis is overseen by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), while the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) oversees recreational cannabis.

Dispensaries can hold a license by one or the other agency, but not both in the same location. Larger dispensary chains can hold both licenses and operate individual sites respectively, but singlelocation businesses are forced to choose between selling medical or recreational cannabis. Guess which one they’re choosing?

As it stands now, Nevada has no such restrictions and dispensaries can sell recreational and medical cannabis in the same location. But Nevada has no experience in recreational sales, and could very well turn to other state’s examples of regulation and oversight. Especially with the confusion over who will be the official cannabis distributors in Nevada. The job was offered to currently licensed liquor distributors, who temporarily passed on the invitation. Stephanie Siverston, spokesperson for the Department of Taxation and CFO at Lee’s Discount Liquor: "We haven't picked a side one way or the other.

We're waiting to get some guidance and information from the state and everyone involved in it to find out how it's going to be structured.

We're interested in learning more about it." In other words, we’ll wait a year or so and then do what other states have done.

It seems nobody knows what to do right now and everyone is scared of making a mistake, so they do nothing. Much of this fear comes from the fact that cannabis is still federally illegal, making support industry professionals nervous.

The whole cannabis industry is watching Nevada right now. There’s never been another rec rollout with the tourist potential our city offers. One thing’s for sure, July 1st will see long lines pouring out of every dispensary across the city. It’ll make the local news. It’ll make the national news. It’ll go viral. Things might get a little hectic over this summer, but everything will be fine once Nevada cannabusinesses hit their stride.

If you’re a medical marijuana patient worried about a cannabis shortage, check out these helpful tips on how you can protect yourself.

1:As Buy in quantity. a medical patient, you can purchase up to 2.5oz. of cannabis every two weeks (or the equivalent in edibles/extracts). If you think you may be affected by a medicine shortage during recreational rollout, stock up now.

2: Reserve your order online.

After July 1, you can expect dispensaries to be much busier with

recreational purchasers. Beat the rush by ordering online. As a patient, you can have your medicine delivered, thereby avoiding the crowds.

3: Get your preferred products now.

If there’s a particular strain or delivery system that treats your

symptoms best, stock up on that product before July 1. Stocking up is especially applicable if you use tinctures, edibles, or extracts.

Expect for these specialty products to sell out quickly (specialty meaning anything other than flower.)

4: Make friends with your budtender.

Introduce yourself to your budtenders, who are a great source of information and can tell you about current and future product stock.

5: Check the menus first.

Especially if you’re looking for a particular product or strain.

Dispensaries use online services to let their customers know what’s currently in stock. Checking menus before going to a dispensary will save you time and frustration.

ou paid an attorney to help you start your business. You need an accountant to take care of your taxes. But over the long haul the one who is going to protect your business, the building, equipment, your income and now your actual product is your insurance broker.

Most companies in the United States have an Insurance broker, and sometimes two. One for Property Casualty and one for Life & Health. Here at Corinthian Capital we do both. Actually, insurance for the marijuana Industry has been around for over ten years and the carriers are very large, “A” rated insurance companies.

Marijuana business insurance, like the marijuana industry itself is evolving. Insurance policies insuring a new risk, at first, were not the greatest. They were often overpriced and not covering much because the insurance companies had no risk experience.

Insurance companies are statistical analysis companies. They analyze information to determine a cost for their insurance coverage. This process is referred to as “underwriting.” To understand insurance you need to look at one of the first types of insurance. It goes back to the “Jack Sparrow days” with first ships carrying cargo. They used to carry a lot of fertilizer and under the right conditions the ships would blow up. So, the shippers got together and decided to each put a small amount of funds in an account after every voyage, and if their ship blew up they would draw from the account to recover their losses.

Simply, it’s a large number of people putting a small amount of money in a fund that will help the ones that are not so fortunate.

That is modern insurance. And like today, they had to be careful of insurance fraud. In the marijuana business, one of the abuses was crop insurance. If the grower messes up the crop in some way (ex: over juicing), it is not an insurable claim. But the claims poured in and crop insurance was pulled from the market.

The good news is crop insurance is back and it includes better coverage, stiffer underwriting and a better price. We can now insure up to 10mil per location of living plants and pesticide & herbicide application endorsements in your general liability policy. Along with crop and general liability, there also is product liability (for whatever you're making), property (for the harvested

plant) including transportation/cargo, equipment breakdown and worker’s compensation.

You may be wondering who we can insure. The list is quite long and includes: Indoor and outdoor cultivators, processors/harvesters, wholesaler/distributors, business-tobusiness transportation, franchisors, dispensaries/retailers, manufacturers of both cannabis and non-cannabis products, wholesale distributors/brokers, laboratories, property management, landlord/building owners, tobacco retail stores, retail/wholesale garden and hydroponic stores, pot doctors (standard malpractice only) and lawyers (same thing, standard E&O policies do not cover pot advisement), pot universities, consulting firms and security companies.

This will be a three-part piece on insurance and the marijuana industry and in future issues I will go into greater detail regarding policies. In closing, I would like to talk a bit about worker’s compensation because I’ll bet most of you are currently in violation. The fastest way to get shut down, not only for the marijuana industry, but any company that has employees, is not having or being in violation of worker’s compensation laws. In a nutshell, worker’s compensation is priced via your payroll. So, in a regular corporation (LLC, C Corp, S Corp), the owners who make the most can be exempt from worker’s compensation coverage. But, as of Jan 2, 2017, according to my state fund underwriter, non-profit companies must have all working officers included in their worker’s compensation calculations.

Worker’s compensation is mandatory in all states, but the laws are different in each state. So, you need to check with your state compensation program. Also, non-profit officers have minimum and maximum income guidelines. Meaning, if you are only paying yourself $25k, the minimum just might be $34K and the worker’s compensation underwriter is going to price it at $34K. This is called “minimum premium.”

Currently, quite a few growers are doing the old supply and demand scam that businesses from other industries have always done.

Being in the industry, I see price sheets from all the companies in the state. I KNOW what they are charging for product.

The reason dispensaries are raising prices is because the growers are asking for more.

Recreational dispensaries will open here in less than a month, why raise the prices when you know you’re about to move a large amount of product?

I realize what you have put into your grows. Blood, sweat, tears, a lot of love and millions of dollars!

But again, you know full well that you're about to see sales figures that go through the roof. There is no reason except full on greed to be raising prices that have been in place since you started. This is happening across the board.

In my opinion, Nevada has been producing some of the best cannabis in the world. I see the results from it everyday. Let us continue our love affair with each other, don't just bend me over!

Again, please don’t forget why this all started. Cannabis is a medicine, and we are medical patients. Many of us are really really sick. Many patients can’t work or are on a very limited income.

We DEPEND on YOU for our medicine to ease our pain, fight our diseases, help us sleep, help us cope with life, find some kind of comfort and generally make life better.

Your reward for your tireless work and major investment is coming. It's right around the corner, and I thank you. I've been able to sleep with a full heart every night because of all the people I get to help with your amazing medicine. I wish you could see the look of joy, relief, happiness and peace we budtenders get to see in the faces of the patients and their families we get to help by selling them YOUR products. As the Facilities Manager and Lead Grower, Bryce knows first hand the difficulties that cultivation workers encounter on a daily basis.

Where are you from?

I was born in northern California, but moved to Reno to be close to family when I was in sixth grade, and have considered myself a Nevadan since then.

What are your favorite strains and/ or cannabis products?

Dutch Treat is my favorite strain, the smell is so distinctive, and the effects are great. My favorite product is the MMG zebra joints, which are layered flower and kief.

What led you to the cannabis industry?

I got into the cannabis industry by helping MMG’s Master Grower build out the facility. He took me under his wing and trained me to grow commercially.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT WORKING IN THIS INDUSTRY? The thing that I like best about the work that I do is guiding the plants from birth through harvest, and seeing the amazing buds that we have grown. By growing quality cannabis, I get to help sick people, and make a difference in the way they live their lives.

What is one thing about your position that people probably do not know?

One thing that people probably don't know about is the difficulty of managing the multitude of tiny things that can affect your harvest.

What IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR POSITION AT MMG? The hardest thing about my position as facilities manager is dealing with the intricacies of the different strains, and what each one of them needs to produce the best product.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO OUTSIDE OF WORK? Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife, dog and cat. I also enjoy playing video games and hiking the Sierra Nevadas.

Charlotte’s Web is a strain of cannabis that was developed for a young girl in Colorado suffering from Dravet’s Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy which causes severe seizures and a variety of other health issues. Charlotte’s Web contains high levels of CBD and virtually no THC (< 0.3%), so the user is calm and relaxed without the psychoactive effects.

For many children with Dravet’s Syndrome pharmaceutical treatments have been ineffective and have produced significant side effects; for these patients, CBD has been shown to be a highly effective and safe treatment with a meaningful reduction in seizure activity.

The use of laboratory testing has introduced consumers to a variety of cannabinoids aside from THC. As the public becomes more educated about cannabis, many consumers will be drawn to strains and products that contain significant levels of CBD and other lesser-known cannabinoids which do not produce the strong psychoactive effects that have been commonly associated with cannabis use. While CBD has gained the majority of attention for its medicinal potential other cannabinoids have shown promise in treating a variety of ailments without producing psychoactive effects.

Cannabigerol (CBG) is the second most abundant cannabinoid in many cannabis products, and has shown some similarities to CBD. CBG is currently being used in a number of pharmacological studies to better understand how it interacts with the endocannabinoid system. Like THC and CBD, CBG is found in its acidic form in raw cannabis, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). CBG is described as ‘non-psychoactive’ and is also found in industrial hemp.

CBGA has been labeled as the stem cell cannabinoid since it is the precursor for cannabinoids including THCA, CBDA, and cannabichromenic acid (CBCA). CBGA is formed in resin gland cells and secreted into the storage cavity of cannabis trichomes. During flowering, CBGA is converted into other cannabinoids via enzymes known as synthases. CBGA is converted into THCA by THCA synthase, CBDA by CBDA synthase, and CBCA via CBCA synthase. CBGA is consumed rapidly after forming and does not accumulate significantly in the trichome head. Contrary to popular belief, CBGA levels are not a meaningful way to determine optimal harvest time. High levels of CBGA are a product of the plant’s genetic makeup and synthase levels, not an indication of a premature harvest.

Like CBD, CBG has shown many promising health benefits, but more research is needed to fully assess its potential. In limited studies, CBG has been shown to affect many types of cells throughout the body. CBG has demonstrated an ability to activate CB2 receptors in immune system cells and reduce inflammation similarly to its cousin CBD. In bone marrow cells, activation of CB2 receptors by CBG can

stimulate bone structure growth by promoting the recruitment of stem cells for the formation of bone cells. CBG can also interact with α2-adrenergic receptors in vascular tissue which may result in decreases in blood pressure. A similar compound, dimethylheptyl-CBG, has shown hypotensive and vascular relaxation effects.

In neuron cells CBG shows activity at the 5HT1A serotonin receptor, reversing the anti-nausea effects produced by CBD. This interesting serotonergic activity of CBG may account for its mood enhancing properties.

Investigators have demonstrated antidepressant effects with CBG treatment in an animal model and some believe it may possess efficacy similar to CBC for improving depression in patients.

Also in neuron cells, CBG shows strong inhibition of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) uptake. When this occurs, boosted levels of GABA in the neuron cells inhibit uptake of other neurotransmitters. This produces an anti-anxiety effect in the patient, helping to improve their natural ‘chill-out’ mechanisms. For patients with epilepsy this may be significant. The antiepileptic effect associated with CBD is thought to be mediated in part by increased GABA levels resulting from blockade of GABA uptake; this indicates CBG might be an effective anti-epilepsy treatment. Many tinctures used for anti-epilepsy purposes contain CBG, which is likely a contributing factor to the effectiveness of these products. Additionally, the growth of new nerve cells in adults may be stimulated by CBG through its influence on GABA levels in neurons.

Keeping products clean and safe is such an important factor in the cannabis industry. We all know one of the best ways to do this is by wearing gloves. Wearing gloves seems effortless, but it can become complex when they are not used correctly. First things first, make sure your gloves are the right size. Over-sized gloves can get in the way making it harder to handle products. Wearing a glove that is too small will cause ripping that will contaminate the substances youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re handling. Also important is to remember that you are wearing gloves to protect products from things that could potentially ruin them. If you have your gloves on, and you touch a surface like your cell phone then touch the product with those same gloves, you will contaminate the product with the germs from your cell phone. Gloves need to be removed and replaced every time you touch a surface with potential contaminates. Gloves are a must in maintaining a clean environment. he endocannabinoid system is found in every living vertebrate animal from humans to sea squirts.

This system is made up of receptor sites that work with compounds called endocannabinoids that are created in your body. These compounds work to restore and maintain BALANCE.

Ingesting cannabis mimics the effects of these compounds.

CANNABIS = BALANCE. When your bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s endocannabinoid system is not producing enough cannabinoids on its own, this leads to imbalance also known as dis-ease. This imbalance can be corrected with plant cannabinoids or Phytocannabinoids, and a properly maintained nutrition.

For thousands of years, mankind has been attracted to plants which have scent and flavor profiles. Within each plant are an array of terpenes and cannabinoids. Our bodies benefit from the diverse array of nutritional and medicinal aspects found within these terpenes. Cannabinoids are created from terpenes. So, all cannabinoids are terpenes, but not all terpenes are cannabinoids. We are naturally intuitive about which plants to put into our bodies, we have just forgotten due to the access to processed foods.

We have an opportunity now to be naturally guided to health and wellness through plant medicine and holistic living.

The nutrients you put into your body determine how your body is going to rebuild its cells.

The body is in a constant state of destroying and rebuilding cells. This means you literally are what you eat at the cellular level. Consuming processed and GMO foods is easy to do, however these foods have little to no nutritional value. This is a huge problem for everyone in this country. I went into a grocery store in the midwest a few months ago and wanted a bag of dried fruit. Every bag of dried fruit except one was genetically modified. Even when we appear to be making healthy food choices, we still need to read labels.

Using cannabis as a tool to assist putting your cells back into balance is a blessing, and incorporating proper

nutrition is a way to change your life and your healthstyle completely. Eating foods that are physiologically natural is the best approach. The worst foods to consume are substitute sugars, preservatives and GMOs, alcohol, white flour or super simple starches, margarine, sugar, dairy, animal proteins, and fried foods.

Nearly all whole foods contain the spectrum of essential amino acids in sufficient quantity. The concept that plant proteins are incomplete or inferior has been dismissed by the nutritional community as myth. It is completely possible to get all your nutritional needs met through plant-based nutrition. Hemp seeds contain all 20 amino acids including the omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids. Chia seeds, spirulina, and quinoa are complete proteins. Proteins derived from plant foods like legumes, seeds, grains, and vegetables (potatoes, chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, pumpkin seed, cashews, cauliflower, quinoa, pistachios, turnip greens, and black-eyed peas) are generally complete as well.

Pairing certain foods together such as black pepper and turmeric becomes complementary for the body to receive the antiinflammatory properties of the turmeric. Because black pepper contains cannabinoidlike terpenes that stimulate CB2 receptors, this increases

the bioavailability of turmeric the body is receiving.

Eating a mango an hour before consuming cannabis increases the amount of myrcene available to your body increasing the pain relief effect.

What Does a Pass and Non-Detect

(ND)

Really Mean on Your Lab’s Certificate of Analysis?

C

ongratulations, your lab report just came back with a pass for pesticides. Time to celebrate, right? Well hold on just one minute; what does a pass really mean?

In states with regulatory requirements for certain types of analytes, such as pesticides, a pass means that the value of the analyte was found by the testing lab to be less than the regulatory action level set forth by the state. Since regulatory requirement differ state to state, both 8.0 PPM (Parts Per Million) and 0.19 PPM of Eagle 20 could correctly be reported as a pass.

But wait, my report says “NonDetect”, that means it is totally free of pesticides right?

It depends; when taken out of context, a non-detect doesn’t mean that the pesticide is not present. A non-detect means that the lab did not see the analyte or that the quantitative result was less than the laboratory’s limit of detection, LOQ. The labs ability to see an analyte, and its LOQ for a specific analyte, are based upon the method and instruments employed in the lab. The LOQ can also be influenced by regulatory requirements.

For this reason, the real question is: what does a non-detect and pass mean for your specific lab or state? For years, the only instrumentation used for pesticide screening of cannabis was Gas Chromatography. As the industry has advanced and states and local jurisdictions implement hard pass/fail limits, testing laboratories across the country are moving to more sensitive equipment. California is a prime example, as the state recently proposed new testing regulations (with standardized action levels) that will require laboratories to look lower than they ever have before.

To understand what non-detect means for your specific lab report, you need to understand several terms: LIMIT OF QUANTIFICATION (LOQ): the concentration at which quantitative results can be reported with a high degree of confidence.

LIMIT OF DETECTION (LOD): the point at which analysis is just feasible, in other words the lab can see that what it’s looking for is there, but can’t accurately quantify.

ACTION LEVEL/REPORTING LIMIT: Level, typically determined by regulatory body, for monitoring a harmful or toxic substance – determines pass/fail on lab reports.

VALIDATION: Labs can claim certain values for LOD and LOQ but have they been validated? Validation assesses the quality, reliability and consistency of analytical results; it is an integral part of any good analytical practice.

It’s important to ask your lab how it defines the above terms and what its limits are. These levels may all be set the same or they may be higher or lower than one another – it all depends on how your lab sets things up. Also ask why your lab chose a certain level/limit. Was it is based on the limits of the method/ instrumentation or for some other reason?

Let’s finish with an analogy: two labs are counting people in a room filled with 9 people. Lab A has its LOQ set to 10 people – anything below that level is reported as no people detected, so it reports an ND. Lab B has its LOQ set to 1 person and it reports 9 people in the room. It all depends on how sensitive the counting equipment is and how a lab sets its levels.

BEAU LAMBIE This month, we spotlight local GLASS artist BEAU LAMBIE, CREATOR OF THE CALI VETRO LINE TO find out HOW he became a GLASSBLOWER, WHAT TYPE OF GLASS HE SPECIALIZES IN and THE ARTISTS THAT INSPIRE HIM.

How long have you been a glassblower and, how did you get into it?

I’ve been blowing glass for 15 years. My glassblowing career began when I was 18 years old. I was inspired by a group of close friends, Jay Peck (Stoney Glass), Harry (HS3), and Denny. Jay invited me into his shop and from there he and Denny became my mentors.

They let me use their shop, electricity, oxygen, and prep work and never charged me a dime. After a year of broken glass, burns, and

frustration, I made my first sale. I couldn’t have done it without such generous friends.

Where are you originally from? What brought you to Northern Nevada?

I am originally from Bakersfield, CA. I moved up to Tahoe to enjoy its unique beauty and lifestyle.

What type of glass pieces do you specialize in? Do you have a signature piece?

I specialize in creating high quality, functional glass art. I’d say that my signature piece is the recycler, made from some of the best materials on the market, including German clear glass and the most sought after American colors.

Are there any glassblowers or artists that inspire you?

I am currently inspired by Eusheen. His recyclers are amazing. I’m also inspired by Buck. I just love his sculptures. I’ve talked with both artists and not only are they very talented, they seem like nice, down to earth people.

Where can we find your work?

You can always find Cali Vetro art at my two largest retailers, The Buttermuffin in South Lake Tahoe, CA and Art Dogs & Grace in Reno, NV. Do you consume cannabis? If so, favorite strain?

Favorite method of consumption?

I consume cannabis medicinally. I believe it provides so many benefits and has no negative side effects in comparison to modern medicine. With an overwhelming number of strains available these days, I’ve always preferred Kush varieties. My favorite way to medicate is with my Cali Vetro recycler in hand.

Does cannabis play a role in your art?

Yes, cannabis puts me in a relaxed and creative state of mind.

What is your favorite cannabis and/or glassblowing event to attend?

I haven’t gone to any cannabis events however, I’ve enjoyed attending the D.F.O. (Degenerate Flame Off) in Oregon. I also had a great time vending at Champs Trade Show in Vegas.

What recommendations would you give to those wanting to become glassblowers?

My advice to new glassblowers is to stay focused, have patience, be humble, and surround yourself with good people.

VCM: Your male plant photos are truly one-of-a-kind, tell us what inspired them?

DOOBIEDUCK: I have been serious about cannabis photography since the early 70’s when starting my first grows. At that time I joined cannabis web forums like marijuanagrowing.com and icmag. com which I found as special places where I could meet likeminded growers and share my art.

DOOBIEDUCK: Male plants, if undisturbed, out of any wind or air flow, will build up a large amount of pollen when ripening. When I walked past one I was saving in an isolated room for breeding one day just the vibration of my passing caused a cloud of pollen to drop.

That immediately caught my eye, I envisioned this as an image that very moment. You don’t see male images often and I saw a need to share and show them to people who were not familiar with them just like I do with the females. My images have been great tools for growers and breeders to use as references. They have inspired hundreds of new photographers. I often hear from cannabis patients that my images make them smile when they see them. Something I cherish is hearing that and helping patients in any way possible. Even if it is something so little as a smile, I too am a suffering patient and understand.

VCM: How long have you been growing cannabis?

DOOBIEDUCK: I have been growing cannabis since the early 70’s too. My favorite strains to grow are my own hybrids. Early on, I created many crosses and bred with the intention of creating something unique to photograph.

Now, preserving the old genetics I’ve acquired is my main focus for breeding. My favorite strains to photograph are anything unique or out of the ordinary. I have worked with many of the world's leading breeders for years, growing out their genetics to photograph and share with the world on the web.

I’ve done some promotional work as well, such as Tom Hills seed pack design.

VCM: Do you only photograph your own plants?

DOOBIEDUCK: No, I take on special assignments for anyone that needs cannabis photography done but my disability issues are now hindering my traveling and undertaking of that type work. I will always consider projects.

VCM: You also do amazing diorama photos, what was your inspiration there?

DOOBIEDUCK: I really can’t say what inspired them other than my desire to capture something that would shake up the people on social media; they did just that, and have ever since! A little something interesting for those of you that like the diorama photos is that the greenhouse, the cabin, windmill, benches, some of the bushes and trees were all handcrafted by me.

ART & CULTURE

They, along with my hummingbirds and cannabis photos are the reasons for my continued notoriety and ever growing popularity.

VCM: And last, but certainly not least, give us some insight on your eye catching hummingbird photos.

DOOBIEDUCK: I have captured wildlife and hummingbird images for 40 years and have always had feeders around my home. For no special reason, other than to watch their beauty, I placed a feeder near my grow years back. With a dozen or so birds flying around the feeder competing for nectar I noticed some of the birds wandering off flying up to the cannabis colas in my grow.

They often do this, flying up to anything tall near a feeder when they are frenzying around competing for food. They are just searching for the nectar they need to survive when flying up to cannabis.

I’ve never seen them feed on, or even attempt to feed on cannabis. I’ve never seen them touch the colas or the plant. Somehow they can discern from looking there is no nectar there for them and they then fly off rapidly, which really makes capturing these type images even more difficult. It is only the placement of my camera and the lenses used that makes it appear as if they are feeding on the plant in my images; they do not feed on cannabis which I mention often on my site and the web as I do not want to deceive anyone. But, my images are inevitably shared often all across the net with misinformed headlines such as “hummingbirds feasting on cannabis.” That is something I try very hard to correct when I see it. My hummingbird images are not photoshopped, they are single frame digital photos captured in one moment in time, nothing added.

VCM: Where can interested buyers find your photos?

DOOBIEDUCK: My cannabis images and art are available as prints and enlargements on-line now in my Smugmug store via www.cannabiseyecandy.com.

I often take on special orders via the email listed on my site, doobieduck.com. I’m limited by my health nowadays and can no longer travel to do retail shows like the Emerald Cup, which I miss dearly.

VCM: Can we follow you on social media?

DOOBIEDUCK: Yes of course. I have a large following on Facebook as Jeff Scheetz and several pages there that can be found by searching for @macroimagery or @doobiesgenetics. I am also on Instagram as DoobieDuck, with a large and growing following there.

Infused Baby Back Ribs 1/2 cup ancho chile powder 1/4 cup white sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup salt 2 T freshly ground black pepper 1 T ground cumin 1 t dry mustard 1 t ground cayenne pepper 1/2 t ground dried chipotle pepper 1 rack baby back pork ribs 1 cup Infused barbecue sauce

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients then wrap in foil. BBQ meat side

down on low heat.

Infused Baked Mac & Cheese 8 ounces uncooked elbow macaroni 2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 3 cups milk 1/4 cup butter 2 1/2 T all-purpose flour 2 T butter 1/2 cup bread crumbs 1 pinch paprika 3 grams of distillate infused in 2 TB MCT oil

DIRECTIONS: Cook macaroni according to the package direc-

tions. Drain. In a saucepan, melt butter or margarine over medium heat. Stir in enough flour to make a roux. Add milk to roux slowly, stirring constantly. Stir in cheeses, and cook over low heat until cheese is melted and the sauce is a little thick. Add extract. Put macaroni in large casserole dish, and pour sauce over macaroni. Stir well. Melt butter or margarine in a skillet over medium heat. Add breadcrumbs and brown. Spread over the macaroni and cheese to cover. Sprinkle with a little paprika. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes and serve.

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients and toss.

Pulled Slow Simmered Shatter Chicken or Pulled Pork 4 lbs. skinless chicken breasts or pork butt, trimmed of fat 1 1/2 cups BBQ Sauce 1/2 medium onion, grated (with juice) 1 T olive oil 1 Tworcestershire sauce 2 T brown sugar 4 grams shatter infused in 2 tablespoons MCT oil

DIRECTIONS: Stir together all sauce ingredients except extract in a 5-6 qt. slow cooker. Save extract until the last 20 minutes and mix into sauce with chicken. Add chicken and turn to coat. Cover and cook on high 3 to 4 hours. Remove chicken to a cutting board and shred each breast using two forks. Place shredded chicken back in the slow cooker and stir to coat with the yummy sauce.

Kief Infused Fried Chicken chicken salt & pepper flour eggs buttermilk flour 10 grams kief paprika ground thyme granulated garlic

DIRECTIONS: Cut chicken into eight pieces. Season well with salt and pepper. Dredge in flour then dip in egg buttermilk mix. In a heavy paper bag, mix flour, 10 grams of kief, paprika, ground thyme, and granulated garlic, salt and pepper. Place chicken in bag with flour/ kief mixture. Shake it up! Heat oil in a deep saucepan, oil should reach 350°F. Place chicken in hot oil. Fry, turning as chicken browns.

Roasted Corn & Black Bean Jicama Salad 3 corn cobs roasted on BBQ, then kernels cut off 16 oz. can black beans drained and cleaned I small red onion diced 2 cups jicama diced cilantro minced cumin, chili powder S&P zest of 1 lime T 2 grams distillate infused olive oil

DIRECTIONS: Combine in bowl and serve.

DIRECTIONS: Simmer whole garlic cloves and habanero pepper in 2 cups olive oil. While warm, melt two grams live resin into the oil.

With a cooking needle inject the hot links with the oil. Cook on grill.
