pril 20th approaches, consumers and industry professionals are gearing up for what many believe will be the most monumental celebration of cannabis in history. However, there remains a dark cloud of federal illegality over the nationwide jubilee that cannot be ignored.

People in states where cannabis remains illegal are holding their hits with bated breath as they wait for their home states to follow the logical path. As for folks lucky enough to live in one of ten states or Washington D.C. with recreational cannabis, its federal status as a Schedule I drug is a persistent thorn in their side, and increases risks for businesses forced to operate in cash.

Fortunately, it is reasonable to expect this to change within the next two years.

In January 2019, Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), filed a bill in the House of Representatives to regulate marijuana like alcohol, appropriately numbered H.R. 420. In early February, Sen. Ron

Wyden's (D-OR) proposal, S.420, proposed descheduling marijuana by removing it from the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), establish a federal excise tax on legal sales, and create a system of permits for businesses to engage in cannabis commerce.

Most recently, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), one of many Democratic candidates running in the 2020 presidential election, has reintroduced a new version of the Marijuana Justice Act, which was proposed in 2017 but failed in the Senate. Besides removing cannabis from the CSA, legalizing and regulating it, this law would retroactively expunge existing marijuana-related criminal records at the federal level and establish a fund to invest in communities affected by mass incarceration due to cannabis-related arrests.

The horizons look even brighter when you consider that, for the first time ever, supporting legalization—particularly legalization emphasizing amnesty and equity—is a mainstream platform position for nearly all other Democratic presidential candidates as well. Other 2020 candidates in the Senate, including Kirsten Gillibrand, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, have all since signed on to Booker’s bill as sponsors.

cannabis, advocates hope federal legalization will include amnesty, equity, and record expungements. Hopefully, women and minorities will see more inclusion than the way the industry currently stands.

It is important that we make sure people who were targeted the most during the failed War on Drugs are able to access opportunities in what may very well become a trillion dollar industry.

Look no further than the beginning of the internet as an example of the massive wealth creation and value creation that cannabis legalization could bring. In 1994, the total value of all publicly-traded internet companies was under $1 billion; by the year 2000, the value of just the top 280 publicly-traded internet companies was $2.9 trillion.

The U.S. market for cannabis is a behemoth with thousands of times the liquidity of the recently-liberated Canadian market.

Most projections don’t even include hemp and the cultural and economic impact that legalization will have alongside medical and recreational cannabis.

Perhaps one of the most important benefits of descheduling and regulating cannabis will be the opening of the research floodgates. For nearly a century, research into cannabinoids and their benefits to the human body has been stalled by the plant’s schedule one status. Legalization has already begun to change the conversation around the way medicine is developed. In the future, we can look forward to personalized cannabis medicine based on how an individual is affected by certain cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

It’s only a matter of time until we achieve full federal legalization. There currently exist three different options within both chambers of the U.S. legislature. It remains to be seen which of these bills will advance, if any. It may end up being a completely different bill. But if we don’t see full legalization by 4/20/2020, a majority of states will have legalized. There are nearly one thousand cannabis-related bills moving through various respective state legislatures in 2019 so far. And at that point, federal cannabis legalization is even more unstoppable.

NEVADA ECONOMIC STUDY

ince Nevada legalized the recreational use of marijuana two years ago, communities throughout the state have experienced tremendous economic and employment growth.

The latest statistics, compiled

by RCG Economics (a Las Vegas-based research firm) confirm this positive impact.

In December of 2018, RCG presented the Marijuana Economic and Fiscal Benefits Analysis showing how some 64 retail cannabis dispensaries statewide have significantly elevated Nevada¹s tax base and job market.

The 2018 study documented $607,710,000 in total marijuana sales, which created 8,300 jobs with $443,338,000 in wages and $113,083,000 in tax revenue for Nevada.

Based on survey results provided by Nevada companies that participated in the state’s cannabis industry, as well as from data provided by various state and local government agencies, RCG has projected by year 2024 that total marijuana sales will hit more than $4.9 billion, creating a total job growth of 67,000 jobs equating to more than $3.6 billion in total wages and total tax revenue for the state of more than $1 billion.

Additionally, RCG concluded in its study during the seven-year period from 2018 to 2024 that the state marijuana industry will generate $112 million in Nevada business licensing fees to various jurisdictions throughout the state.

CANNABIS BENEFITS COMMUNITIES WITH INCREASED TAX REVENUE AND JOB GROWTH Aside from the economic direct benefits to education and state, the communities are seeing an indirect benefit.

Cannabis companies throughout Nevada have been doing their part to help communities by hosting holiday clothing drives, turkey giveaways and other charitable events. Several Las Vegas dispensaries offered discounts to survivors of the October 1 shooting at Mandalay Bay Hotel to help those struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The industry is also involved in changing the 1986 Federal Drug-Free Workplace Program law that prohibits federal employees from using marijuana as a condition of their employment. The Fairness in Federal Drug Testing Under State Laws Act (HR 1687) was recently introduced by Reps. Charlie Crist (D-FL) and Don Young, (R-AK) to bar federal agencies from discriminating against workers because of their status as cannabis consumers, or due to testing positive for marijuana use on a workplace test.

“For our veterans, cannabis has been shown to address chronic pain and PTSD, often replacing addictive and harmful opioids,” Congressman Crist said. “At the same time, the federal government is the largest employer of our veterans’ community. This conflict, between medical care and maintaining employment, needs to be resolved. For federal employees complying with state cannabis law, they

shouldn’t have to choose between a proven treatment and their job.”

Companies like Top NotchThe Health Center, a Las Vegas dispensary have been very involved in helping the Southern Nevada community by sponsoring an adopt-afamily event and toy drive to help underserved families in the Las Vegas area. It has helped approximately 400 families during the holiday season over the last four years.

Kema Ogden, the first female minority owner of a cannabis dispensary and cultivation business in Nevada, is co-owner of Top Notch-The Health Center. She is also a board member of the national nonprofit Doctors for Cannabis Regulation and executive director of two nonprofit organizations, the Ogden Family Foundation that has raised thousands of dollars to curtain needy families’ expenses and the Community Outreach Medical Center that has been providing medical services for low-income and high-risk populations.

“I have long been a firm believer in corporate social responsibility as a way to strengthen communities,” Ogden said. “The cannabis industry has worked hard and will continue to be active in seeking creative ways to become engaged in helping individuals and communities through both monetary donations and volunteerism at local events statewide. As the industry matures through common sense regulation and policy making, the money

earmarked for schools should continue to grow and benefit students throughout Nevada for many years to come.”

In its continued efforts to support disadvantaged schools, families and children in the Southern Nevada community, The Ogden Family Foundation is hosting a premier golf event May 4 at Reflection Bay Golf Club at Lake Las Vegas and its 5th Annual Celebrity Bowling event on May 5 at Red Rock Hotel and Casino.

h… April. Sunny days, mild and breezy nights. Winter planted vegetation begins sprouting up in our gardens and planter boxes. With the spring equinox comes planetary shifts, lunar phase phenomenon, and the promise of growth just about everywhere. Allergies are in full bloom as well, which reminds us that spring is indeed in the air. This month, we explore ocimene- the sweet-smelling terpene that tickles the nose and sometimes, our lungs. Thought of as a decongestant, ocimene has been known to produce the coughing jags that smoking cannabis can sometimes induce. But as a wise old stoner once said, “If you don’t cough, you don’t get off”. We digress.

Herbal, earthy and lightly noted with citrus, ocimene can be found to occur naturally in fruits such as mangoes and sweet peppers, and within the herbs basil, parsley, tarragon and oregano. Wild orchids also carry a hefty dose of ocimene, making it a perfect terpene accent note for lush perfumes.

Think French eau de toilette on the wrist- provocative, exhilarating and mildly sweet. Within the cannabis profile, ocimene acts as a stimulant. Strains that are sativa dominant often find ocimene as a top note. In fact, sativa strains have this terpene to thank for helping to classify a sativa as a sativa; the energetic effect has helped to define the strain.

While ocimene definitely evokes an energetic reaction, it can also help clear out the lungs. You know that feeling when you inhale cannabis and suddenly, you’re moved to couch like there’s no tomorrow? That’s ocimene working hard to stimulate your airway and add to the potency of the flower’s influence.

Medicinally speaking, this terpene has massive antiviral qualities which (in our opinion) isn’t the worst thing that you could be inhaling. Asthma? Seasonal allergies? Ocimene’s decongestant abilities can help treat the symptoms of these ailments and get you breathing deeply again.

Medical studies have shown that cannabis strains containing a high ocimene profile (as well as close pals myrcene and pinene) could possibly assist in alleviating symptoms of the SARS virus.

What the Heck is Next?

My loyal readers (all 100 of you, according to Facebook), it is time to be honest. How many of you (or us) really thought that the entire legalization movement would stop with marijuana?

Truthfully? I did. The last two weeks have proven me extremely wrong. Have you ever heard of ketamine? The troublesome party drug? How about Psilocybin? You know it as the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, and Colorado is ready to legalize it. Guess where I am going with this?

It doesn’t matter how legal or illegal any substance is. Somebody will always find a way to abuse it, and that is just human nature. My question is this: are we obligated to stop stupid people from doing stupid things?

On the one hand, I am absolutely thrilled by these developments. Ketamine has proven to be an extremely effective treatment for depression, the likes of which has not been seen before. Granted, it is quite expensive, but does that really surprise anybody? Psilocybin is also said to have tremendous therapeutic qualities. I have never before done anything hallucinogenic, but my friends who have, declare it to be absolutely life-changing.

Did you know that until the mid-1930s, heroin was legal? In fact, heroin was created by the Bayer medication company, the people who still make aspirin, as a treatment to get addicts off of morphine. Children’s medications of the time contained morphine, opium, cannabis Indica, you name it. Sadly, two days of intense research has forced me to accept that “soothing syrups” (the actual product name) are no longer made. Talk about one-stop shopping! I find myself wondering, how in the world could people have been exposed to all of this and not all become craven junkies?

My TCM colleague Mary Jane may have been around during Prohibition, but I surely was not, so I can only guess at how people viewed these now-illegal drugs. I figure they didn’t even really think about it. Maybe addiction rates went up during Prohibition, but I wonder if people were as dedicated to intoxication and its many benefits as they are now. I suspect that, just like today, some folks did and some did not.

Never discount the achievements that the acquisition of intoxicants can produce. For example, did you know that Christopher Columbus’ ship The Mayflower eventually found land primarily because they ran out of beer?

Food preparation rule number one: you cannot unbake a cake. If you, like me, believe that the positives of marijuana use far outweigh the negatives, then you are quite pleased with the fact that marijuana

is now legal in the state of Nevada. But is there a line to be drawn? Crackheads would love to see cocaine legalized; people who use methamphetamine want to see their buzz of choice legalized, too. In our obesityconscious society, either drug would be welcome by those looking to painlessly shed a few pounds and clean the house until it sparkles and glistens, but is that really good for all of society? Those drugs have a way of making people clinically insane! Well, as they say in Mother Russia, toughski shitski!

Hey, I am a card-carrying member of Generation X, and I am a HUGE believer in natural selection in that I think that some creatures on this planet are just too stupid to live. Have you ever heard of the Darwin Awards? Same thing. My favorite award story is about the Canadian guy who, lacking beer but desiring intoxication, mixed milk with gasoline and gulped it down. He then proceeded to vomit on the ignited fireplace in his living room and burnt the entire house to the ground. He died. Did I mention that he was Canadian?

That is a lovely story, I know, but I am using it to make a point. It doesn’t matter how legal or illegal any substance is. Somebody will always find a way to abuse it, and that is just human nature. My question is this: are we obligated to stop stupid people from doing stupid things? I believe THAT will be the next question in the evolution of drug legalization. Today, ketamine; tomorrow, China White heroin? Opium? Well, give it time, folks. After all, patience is a virtue!

DEAR MARY JANE An advice column from the Grande Dame of Marijuana

Dear Mary Jane, Is it possible to become addicted to marijuana? I start and end each day with a healthy bong rip, and smoke repeatedly throughout the day. Dr. Oz was discussing addiction on TV the other day, and I found myself wondering if marijuana addiction was a thing or not. Marijuana is legal in Nevada--can you be addicted to something that is legal?

Also, will you ever do a centerfold for TCM? Please?

Dear Hooked, My love, it is possible to get addicted to almost ANYTHING, be it legal or otherwise. Oxygen, meat, alcohol, spicy food, nicotine or opioids, if it causes your brain to release dopamine, you can become addicted to it. And sex. Cannot forget about sex.

I digress. If you believe that you are addicted to something, then you would be a better judge of that than will anybody else. Do not discount Dr. Oz. Mehmet Oz is the chief of thoracic surgery at some high-end hospital or other (Columbia University). He is no joke, and I would certainly listen to him before I listened to Dr. Phil, whose ridiculous 70s gay-porn mustache prevents me from ever taking him seriously.

Honestly? As a lifelong weed smoker, I’ve pondered this very issue a few times throughout my illustrious life; I would imagine that most of us have. I am no expert on addiction, so I cannot (and will not) say yay or nay to your status as an addict. HOWEVER...there are certain traits/behaviors/ characteristics that are common among addicts of any flavor, and comparing them to your own habits and activities might be a good place for you to begin defending your habit.

For starters, how would you rate your daily level of consumption? How often do you need to restock your supply?

Do you find yourself gradually smoking more and needing more and more of a substance to get the same buzz? This is called developing a tolerance and could be an indicator that you are smoking too much; if you imbibe all day every day, you’ll get used to it. A break will sort that. A tolerance break, as it is called, of a week or so will generally set things back to normal, whatever that may be for you.

But what if you can't stop yourself from using the drug, even if you want to? You are still using it even though it's making bad things happen in your life, like trouble with friends, family, work, or the law. Have you ever heard of former MLB player Darryl Strawberry? Darryl Strawberry played for the New York Mets and was a phenomenal ballplayer. Sadly, Darryl had a REAL problem with cocaine, one which ultimately ended his career for him. Darryl was addicted. If marijuana affects you the way cocaine affected Darryl, then you do have a problem.

Another indicator would be if you hide your drug use or the effect it is having on you from others. Granted, this one is kind of tough, as marijuana tends to be a fairly social drug. On the other hand, I will smoke by myself or with others; it doesn’t really bother me one way or the other. Truthfully? Sometimes, I would rather be alone anyways, because I don’t want to share my ice cream with anybody, and I want to watch Skinemax without interruption.

At the end of the day, if your marijuana usage is proving detrimental to yourself or those around you, especially the ones who you love, you may need to speak with your doctor or find a local support group.

Finally, I will pose for a centerfold on top of my Ferrari, as soon as I get it. OK, ya Henderson freak show?

After a car accident left her with chronic pain and a pharmacopeia of up to ten prescription medications (including opioids) she did a little research and replaced everything with cannabis.

By 2017 her little family had moved back to North Carolina, who now accepts CBD only remedy, but not whole plant cannabis with THC, which she favors – making her daily dosing challenging, but doable.

“Three years ago I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, then found a report showing the cause may be a cannabinoid deficiency in the body,” she shared. “Since North Carolina isn’t yet legal for whole plant compounds, including THC, I’m doing CBD only and supplementing other beneficial plants to feed my endocannabinoid system.”

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder, and according to fribrocenter.com, sufferers describe their pain as “overall and everywhere,” leading to extreme discomfort and the inability to perform daily activities, fuzzy thinking, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, depression, and sleep disruption.

The endocannabinoid system (e CS) is the vehicle within our bodies that accepts cannabinoids and other beneficial plantbased compounds, distributing them throughout the systems in our bodies, strengthening our immune system, treating ailments, and preventing illness.

High cannabinoid (CBD) cultivars from cannabis were developed

This distinction has caused some confusion in the remedy space, as people purchase the low THC flower, assuming it comes from its cousin, Industrial Hemp – which is grown, for the most part, for its durable stock and beneficial seeds, typically measuring in at just two percent CBD, with traces of other beneficial compounds in the mix. Though the tall hemp grown is more commonly used for industry, the plant does have some supplemental beneficial compounds, but not the girth of its cousin, hybridized from cannabis.

Terpene Rich Diet

Grano’s own dosing begins in the morning and continues throughout the day via medicating with a CBD rich tincture, enhanced by smoking a CBD rich flower, and using topical creams – with the entourage effect of the combined deliveries fully activated.

“Moving to a prohibition state has limited my legal availability of THC products, so I eat a terpene-rich, anti-inflammatory diet,” she explained. “I also add black pepper and copaiba essential oils rich in beta-caryophyllene, or BCP, to my tincture to help activate my eCS. I’ve found that these compounds work synergistically with CBD in easing my anxiety symptoms. I also use herbs like chamomile and lavender to help me sleep.”

Her anti-inflammatory diet comes from the garden, with Grano cultivating beneficial herbs and super plants, such as chamomile, oregano, while keeping her pantry full of colorful produce – providing a rainbow of terpene and beneficial compound rich foods for her family.

“There are so many beneficial compounds in plants, and so many combinations of foods that are healing – that old adage comes to mind, “make food thy medicine, and medicine thy food,” she said, quoting Hippocrates.

North Carolina’s laws currently allow high CBD hemp (hybridized from cannabis), and Grano enjoys smoking or vaporizing its flower, often with a feminine bong from California, My Bud Vase, stating, “I feel like the Goddess I am, when I smoke from that majestic piece of art!”

Grano saves her vaporized plant material to make infused oil, naturally high in cannabinol (CBN), which she takes as a tincture before bed.

Helping Others Help Themselves

Grano was recently named Communications Director for North Carolina’s National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML); with fall of 2018 finding her officially launching her own line of CBD products, under the shingle, Mother’s Hemp. “My intent is to educate my rural community and surrounding areas on the benefits of cannabis and cannabinoids,” she explained. “Our vision is growing and so are we – collaborating with other healthcare professionals to bring an integrated Cannabis Therapeutics program, encompassing overall wellness.”

Once a patient has been helped it becomes a calling to educate, and that’s Grano’s mission.

“Being helped myself has inspired me to help others,” she continued. “There are so many people living in pain, and so many pharmaceutical drugs trying to combat symptoms, but only making things worse with negative side effects – I want to show people there is a way to get away from pharma. You are not just your symptoms, you are a person who has an endocannbinoid system, and this information has been kept from us and our doctors.”

Dr. David Allen, a surgeon living in California who is now on board with cannabis as remedy, made some phone calls to medical schools in the U.S. with some enlightening results.

“Out of 157 medical schools queried, just 13 percent said the endocannabinoid system is merely mentioned in any courses,” he said in disbelief. “Doctors like me graduating medical school have no idea about plant-based medicine and what that means to the health of the human body. It’s been disheartening to realize that most of the surgical procedures I performed during my career were unnecessary.”

Grano has a sense of urgency on helping others to get educated on the eCS and feel better with plant-based remedies.

The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers

Welcome back to another edition of The Cannab-Esq. Chronicles!

We are a quarter of the way through the year, and I know I say this quite frequently, but it's true - the cannabis industry here in Nevada is thriving. If you look at the total marijuana sales in Nevada on a monthly basis, the numbers just continue to rise.

Although there are some months where the sales figures drop slightly from the previous month, generally the numbers are increasing on an overall basis. For example, from April 2018 to November 2018, the amount of marijuana sales increased every month, going from $47.5 Million in April 2018 to a record-high $52.5 Million in marijuana sales in November 2018. Total sales dropped in December 2018 – to $51.8 Million – but with numbers like that, December 2018 is still the second-highest month in terms of sales. As you can see, cannabis is not going away in Nevada - it is a booming business right now and we need to make sure it doesn’t slow down. Which is why this next piece of news set off a few alarms: In what I thought was just an early April fool's joke, it came out last month that the State of Nevada somehow missed out on over $500,000.00 in tax revenue from marijuana sales over a six month period in 2018. Unfortunately, it was not a joke. The Legislative Counsel Bureau looked into the tax returns of some of the cannabis businesses in town and what they found was quite alarming – the numbers being provided on tax returns weren’t matching up with the state’s seed-to-sale tracking system. This means that either people don’t know how to properly use the seed-to-sale system, or for some reason they are intentionally not properly using the system. In any event, the auditors determined that the state missed out on over a half million dollars in tax revenue it was entitled to. As a result of this, the auditors made 13 different recommendations for the cannabis industry, and 11 of them were aimed at the seed-to-sale tracking system. Considering it was the first full year of legalized marijuana sales, mishaps and the unexpected are sure to happen – but damn... that is a lot of money that could have gone into the state coffers!

As I mentioned in a previous installment of The Cannab-Esq. Chronicles, Clark County plans to use funds received from cannabis licensing fees to help fight against homelessness and provide programs for those in need. While the proposal has been revised a few times and is still being discussed by county commissioners, money has already started being directed to the selected state initiatives. It is refreshing to see the County put the licensing fees they receive to good use as opposed to “misplacing” or “missing out” on them altogether. I hope the County continues doing this, as I can see how it could have some far-reaching effects on the valley.

In other positive news, the City of Las Vegas is still moving forward with its plans to authorize cannabis consumption lounges. The City Council met on March 20 to vote on their proposed city ordinance related to the consumption lounges.

Unfortunately, I’m basically writing this as the meeting is taking place, so while I can’t be sure the measure will pass, I am hopeful it will. I truly believe the City Council is wholeheartedly behind the idea as well and will vote accordingly. By the time you are reading this, we may have finally gotten to the finish line on this issue!

Well, at least as far as the City of Las Vegas goes. Hopefully the other jurisdictions in Nevada will follow suit now that the City of Las Vegas is likely to give it the go-ahead. In fact, the Chief of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Sheriff Joe Lombardi, said recently during a luncheon hosted by the Las Vegas Medical Marijuana Association that he too supports cannabis consumption lounges. Yes, you read that right – the top law enforcement official in the valley approves of cannabis consumptions lounges! Granted, he did add a caveat that he only approves if there is no alcohol allowed to be served at these lounges, but still, it is significant endorsement!

Governor Sisolak’s advisory panel for the creation of the Cannabis Compliance Board seems to have been very busy the past few weeks as well. While they are only able to really meet about once a week as a result of the Nevada Legislature being in session, they are making big strides with getting the Cannabis Compliance Board structure put together. That being said, it doesn’t appear they will be taking much action in regard to the other glaring issue that remains - marijuana banking.

Unfortunately, the advisory panel has taken the position that absent some form of federal authority, they cannot act on the issue. However, that is not the final word on cannabis banking in Nevada. I’m sure our Legislators and other bright minds of Nevada will figure out a way to make cannabis banking acceptable and accessible within the state in due time.

Things are falling into place in the cannabis world here in Nevada. So long as we continue to fight the good fight, we will have cannabis consumption lounges, canna-banks, and plenty of other cannabis-related sub-industries before you know it! #StayWoke!

CANNABINOID SPOTLIGHT:

CBD Cannabis, our friend, community leader and perennial parent, hath guided us to yet another monthly installment of the Cannabinoid Spotlight. This month, we direct our attention to the most controversial and newly trending cannabinoid that, according to financial prediction statistics will account for a $22 billion-dollar industry by the year 2022. We can only be talking about CBD. Cannabidiol (CBD) is an organic chemical compound of the cannabis sativa plant. Derived from industrial hemp by way of an extraction process, CBD is sometimes referred to as the “gateway cannabinoid”.

Recently, CBD has become something of a buzzword in the health and wellness niche, and even amongst mainstream consumers. People who were previously trepidatious about using cannabis for fear of getting “high” (side note: the cannabinoid THC produces the psychoactive high feeling associated with cannabis usage) are now open to using CBD and CBD infused products as a safe way to take advantage of the health benefits of cannabis. However, one can argue that in order to fully reap the benefits of CBD, one must also accept the presence of THC, even in trace amounts, to assist in the effects of cannabinoid medicine.

The body has two receptors for cannabinoids: CB1 and CB2. While THC is known to attach itself to the CB1 receptor, CBD does not attach to either. What CBD does do is encourage the body to utilize its own cannabinoids.

In other words, CBD is a helper cannabinoid. What is known as “the entourage effect” is actually a broader example of this very behavior; cannabis components working together to produce a greater effect than any one cannabinoid alone.

For CBD to be the most beneficial, it is best consumed in full spectrum form. Here we go again with the terminology! Allow us to elaborate- full spectrum refers to CBD products that contain multiple cannabinoids as well as terpenes, fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, antioxidants and other organically occurring elements. This means that there is indeed a trace amount of THC present in full spectrum CBD products. Most CBD distributors know that in order to sell CBD online, products such as tinctures, balms, gummies, capsules and other popular items must contain less than .3% THC in order to be legal.

With such trace amounts of THC within a full spectrum, hemp-derived CBD product, a consumer will not generally feel the psychoactive effects that THC produces. CBD is commonly known to promote a general feeling of wellbeing, but

not a “high” feeling. However, there are CBD products that can be produced with higher THC profiles that work just as effectively.

What does CBD do, exactly?

Cannabidiol is one of the most effective phytocannabinoids for reducing inflammation in the body. CBD also has shown to have incredible effects on people suffering with pain, seizures, anxiety and panic, insomnia, depression, addiction issues and much more. An extremely powerful analgesic, CBD can be neuroprotective and therefore, exceptional for treating pain in any capacity.

While CBD has become a popular treatment option for a plethora of ailments, it’s important to make sure that the CBD products you purchase are organic and safe.

Any CBD company worth their salt will provide lab test results for consumers directly on their website to show the chemical profile of their CBD products.

Lady Garcia Tahoe Cannabis Magazine: Where are you from and how long have you lived in Nevada?

Lady Garcia: I’m from Fontana, California but lived here in Las Vegas for a majority of my life (approximately 24 years). I have family in both states so traveling between both areas was very common for my family.

TCM: What led you to become an artist?

LG: I am the only girl of my siblings so all my mom had to do to occupy my attention as a child was sit me down with pens, pencils, markers and a piece of paper and I was hooked. Throughout my life, I had a number of hobbies but my main hobby was art. I drew on anything and everything.

Used all mediums and colors. (The authorities didn’t like that most of the time!) I taught myself many different art styles from tattooing, sculpting, and woodworking. During my youth art consumed me and school was just a blank canvas. You could find my art all over the school from stickers, backpacks, yearbooks, etc. It wasn’t until my 20’s and after a long battle with health issues that I fell into the local art scene.

I got to learn for a brief moment from phenomenal artists at a world famous tattoo shop here in Vegas, Americana Tattoo Company. After some more health battles I realized that art has always been my medium in life. Art was there when I was bored, hurt, happy, nervous, wondering, or even just looking around at the world. The blank canvas will sit there as I draw all day in my head or if I had a pen in my hand. I’ve been pursuing my art ever since.

TCM: How would you describe your art style?

LG: I would describe my art style as NeoTraditional. I’m in love with bold lines and bold colors. I love taking an everyday object and turning it into a masterpiece. Neo-

Traditional is a type of art that brings cartoons to modern life. Perfect combination for cannabis to assist in the creativity process.

VCM: Who is your favorite artist and why?

LG: Whoo! That’s a hard question only because I love following everyone, taking a piece of advice from each illustration that these legends leave us. Each artist I follow have their own style and vibe to their pieces.

You can feel the attention they leave on them. I tend to follow those who have their

own style of bold lines and colors. Here are a couple of artists I follow: Vale Lovette (@ valelovette), Her style is amazingly clean.

I love the animal related pieces she does, modernizing our wild animals brings life to these pieces. Flaks (@Flaks32g), His lettering is no joke! Bold straight lines, money bag symbol, real OG. His art installments are out of this world, it is as if the wall was destined to have his design on them. He’s a legend in the art community.

TCM: Who/what inspires you?

LG: The people that inspire my art are part of my everyday life. My husband most of all. He is always encouraging, loving, and supportive of everything I pursue in life. He is my partner in crime! We laugh, eat, play video games, and laugh more. He inspires many of the colors in my life because I drown in the color of his eyes every day.

My brothers are also part of this journey of inspiration because they are my smoking buddies, we love all different types of cannabis and enjoy sharing it for the discussions that come of our sessions. My mom and dad are there as well because this dream started with them in their dreams and I always respect the idea that we, as their children, are living the life they wanted. So, we live for them.

Like many artists there are many unnamed people who inspire me everyday to bring art to this world.

TCM: What is your favorite thing about the local art scene?

LG: My favorite thing about the art community here is that it’s a melting pot of artists, ideas, and opportunities. You don’t

need to own expensive materials like an iPad Pro, you can get by like me with a knock-off Picasso Tablet. If you need help someone is right there with a helping hand. Most of the art community is part of the cannabis community as well and having that commonality amongst artists is just a plus.

TCM: What part does cannabis play in your work or creativity?

LG: Cannabis plays a HUGE part in my art and life. I love to illustrate cannabis strains in my own style. I use cannabis before, during, and after the creative process. I enjoy using the different effects from cannabis strains to help better portrait what you can expect from them. In combination, cannabis helps with my inflammation, and other symptoms during and after treatments.

Which in turn helps my art overall.

TCM: How do you consume cannabis and what is your favorite strain?

LG: I love to use a variety of different cannabis products in my everyday life, from topicals, concentrates, flower, edibles, and tinctures. I prefer flower overall because you can dress flower with concentrates and kief in a blunt, joint, or bowl with endless possibilities. My favorite strain is hard to bring down to just one.

Every time I enter my favorite dispensary and I see my favorite strains, Bio-Jesus, Head Cheese, and Black Afghan, I will purchase them. These three strains have high amounts of myrcene and can work very well for creativity, inflammation and insomnia.

LG: My advice to the young artist would be if you want to be an artist, do your best to reach out- you never know who will give you a chance if you don’t ask and, try to put in the work. Be humble, always. Be rich in life not in money. Do Good, Die Great!

IS THE CULTURE OF

420 CLASHING WITH WHAT THE INDUSTRY IS TRYING TO DO? When someone mentions “stoner culture,” what do you envision? Like a lot of people, you might imagine someone wearing a pot leaf-emblazoned tie-dye t-shirt, unmotivated and unemployed, laying around on the couch, taking rips from a bong between matches on Xbox. Thankfully, this “stoner culture” stereotype is outdated and inaccurate.

Over the last decade as cannabis has to varying degrees become legalized across the country the public’s perception of it has shifted, making cannabis more widely accepted in the mainstream.

As a result, the “stoners” of today rarely match the often negative stereotypes that they are generally portrayed to be.

Instead, they are the soccer mom next door, the elderly couple across the street, and the successful business executive down the road.

Prior to the relatively recent acceptance of cannabis by the mainstream, companies who wanted to sell cannabis oriented products marketed them to individuals who embraced the rebellious, outsider nature of the stereotypical stoner identity.

As legal availability and acceptance of cannabis has grown, the persona of the cannabis consumer has shifted to reflect the more general public rather than

a niche segment of it -- and customers who previously would not even consider using cannabis are waking up to its potential.

As part of this shift, the same professionals who would have labeled cannabis users as "dopes" twenty years ago are becoming some of cannabis' biggest proponents and are recognizing the massive business opportunity that the cannabis industry offers.

Many of these individuals are starting (or joining) cannabis businesses themselves -- bringing with them a more professional, mainstream sensibility to branding, marketing, and retail operations. As a result, the cannabis businesses being run by these entrepreneurs are proving to be highly successful and are quickly claiming a large share of the market.

To capture more of this new market, many cannabis retailers are turning away from your traditional "blazeit420" street-styled cannabis branding and marketing in favor of a more approachable corporate branding sensibility reminiscent of the alcohol and pharmaceutical industries.

In doing so, these companies are stripping away many of the symbols, motifs, and even color schemes traditionally associated with “stoner culture” – and in doing so are

also stripping away many of the negative connotations and stereotypes associated with the “stoner” identity.

Today, when a new cannabis consumer walks into a modern dispensary or cannabis store they aren’t barraged by images of pot leaves, Bob Marley profiles, blaring reggae music, and blunt motifs that might scare them off because they don’t identify with the “stoner” culture. Instead, they might see sleek glass cabinets filled with discreetly packaged cannabis, hear soothing modern background music, and speak with well-informed budtenders who can describe in clear clinical terms the difference between strains.

This experience makes the customer feel as though this is just another kind of pharmacy or high-end liquor store, somewhere they can feel comfortable.

Another way the cannabis industry is moving in a direction that could be seen as a counter to 420 culture is the way and the rate at which it is consolidating in a very corporate fashion.

Stereotypical 420 culture has usually been associated with “fighting the man,” with “the man” often being a stand-in for government overreach and corporate greed. The reality is, as the industry continues to grow, it is becoming “the

man” its consumers, rightly or wrongly, are typically associated with disliking.

With large dispensary chains providing a consistent brand experience across several different chain locations, and cannabis-specific softwares like Zodaka speeding the modernization of the industry, this trend of corporatization and "mainstreaming" of cannabis culture will continue because these advances will only make the industry more profitable. However, the beautiful thing about cannabis is that it can be grown by anyone, anywhere, and enthusiasts who don't agree with the current or future state of the market can find and form the cannabis communities they would like to be a part of.

Tahoe Cannabis Magazine: Are you originally from Nevada?

Gabriel Castillo: I'm originally from San Antonio, TX and moved to Las Vegas 2 years ago to pursue stand-up comedy and the legal cannabis industry TCM: Where can we find you?

GC: I'm based here in Las Vegas so I get around all over Vegas. I host The Godless Comedy Show at The Center for Science & Wonder and every second Friday of the month we showcase local up-and-coming talent in the thriving Las Vegas Comedy Scene, along with a local headliner to end the night.

The shows have been catching a buzz and we're having a lot of fun! I also have Chanclas Open Mic every Wednesday at Chanclas Cantina on Desert Inn and Pecos where new and seasoned comics try out material on unsuspecting people who are just trying to finish a torta. We are growing the Chanclas Open Mic and even have a local headliner to end the night. I also can be seen at Jokesters Comedy Club at The D Casino on Fremont for the 10:30pm show as well as L.A. Happy Earth Market on Karen Ave has been the venue for a number of local comedy shows, I have performed at the $5 Comedy Show which is one that is turning heads and catching a following. I make it a point to hit the open mics heavy to get better at what I do. We have a strong scene so it creates a real comradery. I really that believe we all draw strength and inspiration from each other. If any readers make it to Vegas on vacation, look me up!

TCM: How did you get into comedy?

GC: I was in a place of ambiguity where I felt no real passion for what I was currently doing. All the checkpoints where highlighted (i.e good job, good home and friends) but I just felt like I wasn't challenging myself to be myself. My best friend (Andres Cervantes) and I were talking about how much we were unhappy and he said "I want to go to an open mic and just talk" that sparked something in me and I researched open mics and after 3 weeks of trying to convince my friend to come with me I went alone and I knew as soon as I was on stage that I found

my passion (I didn't get a laugh, I can remember that). I did stand up in Texas for 2 months and decided to move to Vegas and pursue stand up comedy as a lifestyle choice.

TCM: Where do you get your material?

GC: I get my material mostly from making light of painful experiences which range from nights in jailhouses all over Texas to growing up on welfare with my mom doing heroin. I see the funny in my personal tragedies and there are many, so I attempt to weave a comedic flow to them, while some of my material is simply my awkward observations about day-to-day life.

TCM: How do you handle hecklers?

GC: Hecklers? Hecklers, you say? Acknowledge it casually and move on but if it gets disruptive then remind them that people came here to see a comedy show. I'll ask the audience how do they like a crying baby in a theater and let the hecklers bask in the loud response.

TCM: What if the audience doesn't laugh?

GC: (On stage) I push through to the next joke maybe abandon the joke and jump to something new. (Off stage) listen to my recording of the set mentioned above while I cry and drink tequila. Mostly cry though.

TCM: Is comedy your day job?

If not, what job do you do to earn a living?

GC: Comedy does not pay the bills or a bill yet so I work maintenance for the apartment complex I live in and Brand Ambassadorship for Evergreen Organix and Rock n Roll Tattoo.

That provides me with just enough to keep this dream moving forward.

TCM: What role does cannabis play in your comedy?

GC: Cannabis plays as a twofold inspiration. On one end, the act of smoking cannabis helps me write and create material and on the other end, the cannabis lifestyle has its own inherent tragedy-tocomedy relationship that I point out on stage.

TCM: Favorite strain or product?

Garth Culti Vader Garth Culti Vader is infamous as both a rapper and a grower, spitting strains and verses that have kept Humboldt County and beyond, high and happy for decades. The only things more important to him than weed and music are friends and family. I think that’s why we get along so well. We sat down a couple weeks ago to talk about his new album with UnderRated, called Black Markets Matter, set to be released on 4/20, and his thoughts on the current state of the cannabis industry and weed politics.

Hopper: Let’s start at the beginning. What made you get into music and growing?

Garth: I always thought they went hand in hand. I always loved hip-hop music. The majority of songs I liked because they had some weed references. Listening to instrumentals and writing my own raps while I’m in the greenhouse talking to the ladies, zoning out and deleafing for

hours, was always one of those artistic things that just went together like peanut butter and jelly.

Hopper: That’s the therapy of growing. I believe the plants respond to it as well, it’s symbiotic.

Garth: You better believe they respond to it! They pick up on the vibes you’re putting out. When I made albums, the different strains I was also working on I talked about those on my albums.

It was like a photo of that time, of the strain I was growing and where my mindset was. Being in that zone with the music and the weed, it’s like a photo album, but it’s an audio photo album.

Hopper: Which one came first, the music or the weed?

Garth: I guess it went from listening to music and selling weed since I was a young ass kid, to actually making music and growing weed. That conversion happened in the teenage years. The first time I recorded I was 14 years old.

I actually got on radio and stuff like that.

I stopped for a long time.

It wasn’t until 2001 when I met up with the Humboldt County Freestyle Kings, that I really started getting back into recording again. Weed and music is what brought

us together.

Hopper: You’ve done some great collaborations over the years, from Tech N9ne to Pakelika, God rest his soul. I loved Pak, he was a brother to me.

Garth: I originally met Pak when we were doing the Dank Alumni album and we filmed a video called The Vapors. We hit it off from there on. Rest in peace, Pak! Tech N9ne, the song I did with him, was 13 years ago. Everyone I’ve met has been through music and weed, just like you. It’s like peanut butter and jelly once again. I’ve been able to collaborate with a lot of big artists, Mistah F.A.B., I have a lot of songs with. Celly Cel, Spice 1, you know. Pakelika was the man, Sunspot Jonz, Tech N9ne.

My friend Myster DL, he just put out the Cypress Hill music video.

Once again, with music and weed, it just all falls into place.

Hopper: Did you start Dank Alumni?

Garth: It was a whole crew of us. We all came together, it was all about smoking weed and growing weed, you know how it is. The first song we all did together was called Dank Alumni, and our second song was Hotbox Anthem. It got like a million views. After those two songs we did an EP, that’s the one that has The Vapors on it, that’s the video where I met Pak. Hopper: The Black Markets Matter album is being released on 4/20. How would you describe it?

It’s bigger than a song, it’s bigger than an album, it’s a movement that’s really speaking to a lot of people right now.

Garth: I could go on and on, it just means so much emotionally.

always will. Without the black market there wouldn’t be a legal industry. People who hate on the black market forget that weed was born, raised, and thrived for many generations on the black market. It means a lot to me because with the corporate takeover of the sacred plant that everyone loves, it’s going to become commercialized bullshit.

It robs the culture, it robs the people who have been feeding their families, such as myself. I’ve supported my kids their whole life with what’s now looked down on as the black market, like I’m a bad person because I didn’t pay in hundreds of thousands of dollars. People should really focus on decriminalizing instead of legalizing. I feel that, for the average person that isn’t in the weed culture, and hasn’t made a living off of this and hasn’t been a part of it, they don’t understand it. I don’t know if they ever will.

My name, Garth, means “keeper of the garden” actually. So I’m supposed to be taking care of the gardens. This last summer was super hard for me. They came and popped me. I wasn’t around so they put out a warrant.

It was crazy nonsense, it was a nightmare. During that time, I was working on the Black Markets Matter album with UnderRated, so I was spittin’ what was going on at the time.

Hopper: What was it like working with UnderRated?

Garth: It came pretty natural because I’ve been making music with him since we were in Humboldt County Freestyle Kings.

Potluck was on our album, we were on Potlucks album, and then I just started making more music.

I always hung out at the studio when they would make beats. I was the weed guy, always comin’ in with the new strains I had. That and the crockpot, you know. You get some good food cookin’ and

bring in the weed, and everybody’s good. That’s how I’ve always been with UnderRated since at least 2000-01. After 18-19 years, it just comes natural. It was easy. It was fun, it was simple. This is the first year that my mind’s not thinking about the outdoor season or dep or getting shit started and stressing on that, because I’m focusing on the music and having fun with that.

Hopper: Let’s talk about the Hello strain and the souvenir seeds that go along with the album and teaming up with CSI Humboldt.

Garth: Yeah, again that’s another flow right there. When we were making this album, the idea just popped up to push out some good genetics to the people who listen to our music. It’s all about getting some good shit out to the people who deserve it.

Hopper: The Black Markets Matter CD release party and show is coming up on the 18th, I’m stoked Big Smo is coming out for it.

Garth: That’s another peanut butter and jelly thing right there that you had thrown into the mix! We did a song with Smo on Black Markets Matter called ‘Like A Criminal’.

Then it was like, “Hey, we’re gonna start doin’ shows”, and once again with the galaxy, everything just came together.

Hopper: The show is gonna go off! You wanna tell everyone about the other artists on the bill?

Garth: Yeah, Ishi Dube, a good friend of mine, he’s a reggae artist out of Humboldt County and his music is super soulful. My other friend, One Eye, he’s the man. I’ve known him for a long time. He’s on the Black Markets Matter album too.

Hopper: You’re really outspoken, I love it. Tell everyone your thoughts on the current state of the cannabis industry.

Garth: I try to have an open mind about it because we all want to see everyone be able to have good weed, smoke wherever they want, grow whatever they want. I see the push for what people are trying to do on the legal side of it, and you

know, I respect anything about weed being accessible to everybody for medical, for enjoyment, or whatever the case may be. It’s hard to explain because I don’t want to hurt people’s feelings on any of that shit, because then you see the corruptness of everything we’ve been talking about with corporations taking control and taking the whole vibe and the love off it. Where I see the cannabis industry right now…it hasn’t really been good for a lot of farmers like myself and friends I know. The majority of small Mom and Pop growers are getting pushed out.

It’s definitely been frustrating, but people always make the best out of it. I want to see something good come out of it.

Hopper: 4/20 is basically stoner Christmas. What’s your 4/20 wish?

Garth: I guess I would wish for cannabis to be decriminalized because there shouldn’t be any competition or people struggling.

The only competition should be cups and awards. If there’s a corporate cannabis company growing 2000 plants, there should be no reason why you can’t grow at least 500 plants, a quarter of what they’re doing, in your backyard if you have space for it!

CALIFORNIA IS LAUNCHING THE NEW REGULATIONS AND LICENSING APRIL 2ND California (the second largest economy in the world) is prepared to release the licenses allowing the cultivation of industrial hemp.

The ability to cultivate hemp will change the landscape in many areas but not all. Some counties have placed a ban on hemp due to the issue of cross pollination of medical and recreational cannabis. Lawsuits in Oregon and Colorado have paved the way for other states not to hopefully make the same mistakes. In 2019 California will allow farmers choice only due to lack of seed for large scale cultivation. This has opened up Pandora’s hemp box if you will. Humboldt, Yolo, Sacramento, and Fresno have placed bans until the state regulates seed and proper cultivation standards through accredited seed approval. However, counties such as San Joaquin County and San Luis Obispo County are full steam ahead. The seeds on the approved list of seed cultivars are less than appealing. Non CBD strains primarily for hemp seed oil and fiber. The seeds are non feminized seeds full of pollen and problems to the cannabis and hemp community. The solution is feminized seed selection, clones and yes, tissue culture.

It’s 420 all month, and I will be hanging out at Hippy Hill in San Francisco, California on actual 4/20. Get Roasted Lemon Herb Chicken Ingredients 1 (5 to 6-pound) roasting chicken Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 large bunch fresh thyme 4 lemons 3 heads garlic, cut in 1/2 crosswise 2 tablespoons infused 1g kief butter, melted 1/2 pound sliced bacon Directions Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Place the chicken in a large roasting pan. Salt and pepper the inside of the chicken. Stuff the cavity with the thyme, reserving enough thyme to garnish the chicken dish, 1 lemon, halved, and 2 halves of the garlic. Brush the outside of the chicken with the infused butter and sprinkle again with salt and pepper. Cut 2 of the lemons into quarters and scatter the quarters and remaining garlic around the chicken. Lay the bacon slices over the chicken to cover.

Roast the chicken for 1 hour. Remove the bacon slices from the top of the chicken and set aside. Continue roasting the chicken for an additional 1/2 hour, or until the juices run clear when you cut between a leg and thigh. Remove to a platter and cover with aluminum foil while you prepare the infused CBD honey apricot beurre blanc. Reserve the bacon for the garnish on the garlic roasted asparagus mushrooms.

CBD Infused Honey Apricot Rhubarb Beurre Blanc

Ingredients 1 bunch fresh asparagus, trimmed 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, quartered 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, minced 2 teaspoons 300 mg THC distillate infused olive oil kosher salt to taste freshly ground black pepper to taste

Ingredients 3 ounces shallots, peeled and finely chopped 2 large pitted fresh apricots 4 rhubarb stalks, diced 2 ounces CBD infused honey (180mg CBD) 1/2 cup white wine vinegar 1/2 cup white wine 4 tablespoons heavy cream or other liquid replacement 1 pound butter, cut into 1 inch cubes

BREAKING THE STIGMA AROUND CANNABIS

ith cannabis becoming legal for medicinal and recreational use, women of every age and stage in life are coming forward with so many questions about the plant, how it is used, and what effects it has on users.

In fact, studies are showing 90% of women are interested in cannabis and want to learn more but feel intimidated or scared to ask, worried of the judgment from family and friends or the negative effects it could have on themselves and their ability to function and care for their families.

With so much misinformation around cannabis, it is of no surprise why so many people feel intimidated and even afraid of using this plant and asking for guidance.

As a society we have been led to believe that cannabis is a gateway drug that causes great harm and destroys people's lives.

Women of all ages fear it and the fear needs to end. Even if you choose to not consume it, can we please stop fearing it and allow ourselves to become educated and have a conversation about it?

It is time to break the stigma around cannabis, to create community and awareness. It is time for women to feel safe to share their experiences, to ask their questions without feeling ashamed or embarrassed. Why? Because for thousands of years women have used the cannabis plant for everything from skin and beauty care, health and wellness needs, spiritual practices and even simply for good living and a little fun.

The criminal side to using the cannabis plant is fairly new to history but for most of us it is all we know. With the fear of

Thankfully, science and law are catching up with what human intuition knew all along- the benefits can not be denied. The cannabis plant is a tool we can use for so many ailments and needs from our physical health to our mental and spiritual health.

With cannabis being legal for recreational use in Nevada, women are coming forward with questions about cannabis consumption or looking to share their powerful experiences with this plant and offer hope and support for those looking.

THE CRITICAL NUANCES OF

CANNABIS AND HEART HEALTH

cannabis to improve the health of their heart or that it will automatically decrease their chances of developing a serious heart condition. Moreover, people who already have a heart condition need to tread cautiously here.

According to the World Health Organization, the leading cause of death in the world is ischemic heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease or coronary heart disease.

It is a disease that causes arteries to narrow, which leads to a drop in the amount of oxygen that reaches the muscles of the heart. The drop in oxygen levels make it more and more likely to have a heart attack.

It’s a scary disease, and it’s trending in humans, but is less likely in low income countries where ischemic heart disease ranks just third for leading causes of death.

For Americans, ischemic heart disease is the number one cause of death annually.

Why is it that Americans are more likely to die from a heart condition? Many point to a combination of our lifestyles and diets.

In America, people’s health is suffering in a number of ways. The majority of the population is overweight or obese, and many Americans are eating poorly – all the wrong foods and few of the right ones. Not to mention all the stress that can wreak havoc on heart health.

Add it all up and it’s no wonder that the leading cause of death for Americans is related to heart problems. Lifestyle changes are a critical factor here, but how about cannabis? Could it be part of the solution as well?

Cannabis and Heart Health, According to Science

A 2015 study that appeared in the Journal of Disease and Global Health found that frequent cannabis consumers had smaller waist sizes than those who don’t consume or who were past consumers.

Doctors’ Advice on Cannabis and Heart Health

For reference, a few doctors and cannabis specialists offered their general guidelines for keeping our hearts healthy when consuming cannabis.

In 2011, a study that appeared in the American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that “the prevalence of obesity is lower in cannabis users than in nonusers.”

Since obesity and large waist size are directly linked to heart disease, it seems that cannabis may improve heart health simply by keeping body weight down.

Another study in The American Journal of Medicine had similar findings regarding cannabis use and smaller waist sizes.

More importantly, the researchers of that study also found that cannabis users have a lower level of fasting insulin and insulin resistance. Insulin resistance affects the heart directly. According to a study that appeared in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the researchers concluded that “insulin resistance is…a multifaceted syndrome that increases significantly the risk for cardiovascular disease.”

Essentially, there seems to be significant evidence cannabis use is good for your heart as a preventative health measure.

However, that doesn’t mean that everyone should immediately start smoking

Many of the doctors and cannabis specialists suggested full-spectrum, CBD-dominant as the best product profile to look for when using cannabis as a tool for improved health.

Dr. Joe D. Goldstrich, MD, said that CBD “by virtue of its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, may hold the greatest potential to modulate atherosclerosis and provide improved heart health.” Echoing the sentiment, Dr. Rachel Knox recommended microdosing CBD-heavy tinctures “that include a rich variety of terpenes including BetaCaryophyllene.”

She recommended Beta-Caryophyllene for several reasons: • It’s a dietary cannabinoid according to a 2008 study in PNAS. • It reduces atherosclerosis, according to a study published in ChemicoBiological Interactions.

• The British Journal of Pharmacology showed in 2000 that it reduces the shortening of the action potential in the heart’s muscle when there is a diminution of calcium by inhibiting the potassium current.

CBD-rich products are one thing, but what about THC-dominant products? Where do they factor in for people concerned about heart health? Dr. Knox stressed the importance of accurately dosing THC. She recommended microdosing; start small and go slow if you’re not used to cannabis.

For more experienced cannabis consumers, she included ingestion as a reliable means of treating heart conditions because, as she pointed out, ingested THC is “about 10 times more euphorigenic and intoxicating” when it converts to 11-OH THC in the liver.

Dr. Knox also suggested edibles should not include sugar, artificial sweeteners, grains, dairy, and other pro-inflammatory products as they would be counterproductive.

Minimizing Cannabis Side Effects and Risks for Heart Patients

Whichever form of cannabis patients turn to, proper dosing is integral to using cannabis for its heart-healing and heart-preserving benefits. By starting with low doses, patients can aim for the desired effect while minimizing any unwanted side effects. One of those side effects includes how high-dose CBD impacts the body’s ability to metabolize many pharmaceuticals.

According to a study in Life Sciences, Yamaori et al. showed that CBD most potently inhibits certain enzymes in your liver, causing a lot of medications to hang around in your body longer than intended, including blood thinners like Warfarin.

We see similar effects with compounds in grapefruit, and it basically means you might have to work with your doctor to lower the dosage if you want to take CBD-rich products in conjunction with your current pharmaceuticals.

Aside from CBD versus THC, what’s the best delivery format for heart patients? Smoke inhalation, for instance, comes with effects like increased blood pressure, stroke, and even heart attack in some cases. Harvard-trained MD Dr. Jordan Tishler recommends people avoid these risks all together by choosing vaporization over smoking. He wants people to remain safe when consuming cannabis, adding, “the key to safely using cannabis for people with any of these cardiac illnesses is acknowledging the risk and monitoring them closely.”

Though each of the doctors expressed their belief that cannabis consumption can improve heart health, they were also careful to remind everyone to speak with their own doctor and inform them of their life choices.

The Future of Cannabis and Heart Health

While cannabis shows positive signs as a tool for preventative health, current heart patients need to approach it with care.

Hopefully, as cannabis gains legitimacy as an effective medicine, we will be able to establish clearer guidelines for all physicians and their patients.

Hello my people! Last month, my back went out. For the most part, I wasn’t working, playing music, or writing anything.

I was laid up and ate as much cannabis oil as I could to relax the muscles and lower the pain.

As I’ve stated before, I am an old punk rocker. I’ve been diving off stages and carrying a 20lb bass around my neck for 35 years. I’ve been in more car accidents then I can remember, and I even fell off a second story building once. By all rights I shouldn’t be alive or at least walking. I was addicted to opiate painkillers for a very, very long time. I had doctors throwing scripts at me like they were confetti! It took its toll- I became a junkie.

Luckily I have met some great friends through the years of chaos and about 10 years ago my friend Adam at Compassion Nevada Consulting turned me on to cannabis as a painkiller/ anti-inflammatory. I’d always used it to help with sleep, breathing conditions (asthma), and just to get high and let go of the day’s stress. But to find out how good it was for my pain was a lifesaver!

Back then, you had to fill out a form and send money to the state just to get the form to give to a doctor and there weren’t many that would sign off for you. Then, if you could find the doctor to sign off, you’d send those papers and MORE money to the state. About a month later, you would get a letter telling you to go to the DMV to take a photo (more money) for your card that they would send you a week or two later, if you were lucky. It was A LOT of work and A LOT of money. What I am getting at is this all started because of the word MEDICAL! Now, back a few years ago when dispensaries were strictly medical, you could easily get an ounce for $100. You could always find edibles and other products with way over 100mg of THC per package. What happened to that? Just because you gained a shitload of customers when it went recreational doesn’t mean you have to increase your prices. Now that you sell more recreational servings doesn’t mean you have to screw over medical patients that need a higher dose to deal with their medical problems.

With the corporate influx coming into cannabis and all these stock market traded multimillion dollar brokers who are starting to run the game, I want to remind them where this all came from, the medical patients. All of us getting our cards and proving to the state of Nevada that this is indeed a medicine, is the reason you are here in the first place. Patients like Cindy Brown going to every city council meeting and telling them of the medical benefits of cannabis are the reason you are here. People like me and Adam telling everyone we could about the medical benefits of cannabis are the reason you are here. Dr. Sanjay Gupta going on CNN and showing the world the medical benefits of cannabis stopping a child’s seizures is why you are here.

Rick Simpson, Jack Herer, Eddie Lepp, and countless other freedom fighters that have either gone to prison or lost their homes and lives because of cannabis prohibition is why you CAN be here.

And shit, we are the lucky ones. There is a video going viral on the internet right now showing a cancer patient in the hospital being searched and harassed by police because he was honest to his doctors about his cannabis oil use to avoid opiates and treat his cancer!

Knowing that these things are happening in non-legal states still makes me sick to my stomach. I know that it will change eventually but what about the people that don’t have a choice and need help RIGHT NOW? This fight is far from over. And each and every person who buys at a dispensary has a personal stake in it.

Get involved! Go to NORML meetings, go to your city council meetings. Send letters to your government. There are people suffering for what you have easy access to. Don’t you want everyone to have the same access as you? Especially someone with a horribly painful or debilitating disease they didn’t ask for? Think about it, I’m sure you know someone in another state that could really use cannabis to treat their pain, stress or disease. Do you think it’s right that they legally can’t and you can? Does it make you mad like it does me? Well, you can help. Get involved! Go get your medical card.

Keep supporting the medical program. Hell if anything, it makes your purchases cheaper, more weed for less money is never a bad thing. But you’re also letting the state, the feds, the owners of these cultivations and dispensaries, and non-legal states know that this is OUR MEDICINE!
