Lounges on Hold Last month, the City of Las Vegas gave approval to begin accepting applications for cannabis lounges in Las Vegas which seemed promising for the implementation of lounges throughout the state. However, in a quick turn of events, early this month, the Nevada Senate voted in favor of approving AB 533 with an amendment that establishes a two-year moratorium on cannabis lounges. As most of our local dispensaries, many of whom have already secured neighboring lounge locations, were looking forward to adding a safe place for tourist consumption, it now appears that it will be quite awhile before we see the first lounge open. Nevada has some of the most stringent cannabis laws in the country. Our program is highly regulated and our products are extensively tested. The industry provides needed jobs to those in our community and collects an immense amount of tax money. Back when cannabis was recreationalized, the “Vote Yes on 2 campaign indicated that cannabis should be regulated like alcohol. Yet, here we sit, with a bar on every corner, alcohol flooding the casinos, and not a single safe-consumption cannabis lounge in sight. Could this be the casino influence, leaning on the government officials they so heavily support? This makes no sense. Tourists are not interested in sitting in cannabis lounges all day and all night in lieu of taking in all that the casinos have to offer. Tourists will still drink alcohol and they will still gamble. What they may not do, is consume their purchased cannabis inside their hotel rooms or in hotel parking garages. And, regardless of what the hotel industry and some of our local politicians think, we have quite a few tourists that visit Nevada and guess what, use cannabis as medicine. Should these visitors transport their medicine across state lines or purchase from a local dispensary with nowhere to consume? No, they should be able to walk into a cannabis lounge, consume their medicine, relax and then venture out to experience everything Reno and the neighboring cities have to offer. As a patient, I am thankful for the industry we have. It is comforting to be able to purchase quality, plant-based medicine instead of dangerous pharmaceuticals. The industry deserves to be able to provide a safe consumption area for their patients and customers.

Nature's Chemistry

>>> GROWING FOR A BETTER LIFE

10

ver the past couple of years the cannabis industry has taken Nevada by storm. Throughout this time, there have been many changes in ownerships, mergers and acquisitions. One constant in the industry has been Nature’s Chemistry. Through hard work, diligence and attention to detail, this company has established themselves as one of the top cultivators in the industry. In their approximately 23,000 square foot building, Nature’s Chemistry has perfected the art of producing top shelf quality cannabis. When you ask them what their secret is, you will get a simple response“we just care about what we are doing.” This cannot be argued with once you step foot into their facility. From the moment you walk in, you are required to step into a cleaning solution that makes sure you are not bringing in anything unwanted into the building. From there, you are walked into a room to continue the decontamination process. By the time you leave that room you feel like a doctor ready for surgery. The attention to detail on cleanliness is like nothing we have seen before outside of a hospital. They tell us that the state required product testing they go through is stringent and extensive. Any lapse in the chain can lead to a failed test. Surprisingly, they are ok with

this. They feel the consumer should feel reassured that the product they are consuming is safe. While walking the facility, we notice every staff member wearing the appropriate coat, hat/hair net, mask and crocs that do not leave the building. Protocol is paramount in this facility! Everything that enters this building gets a generous dose of alcohol before being moved to its final destination. The white walls and epoxy floors pick up a reflection from the lights above from being so clean. Many of the facilities throughout Nevada were retrofitted for the industry, but this facility was built from the ground up specifically for the purpose of growing cannabis. Every hose bib, outlet and pipe serves a purpose. According to them, this equates to efficiency and space management so there is no lost space in the facility. Lost space equates to less product being grown. The rolling tables in the veg and flower rooms are an indication of this. Why have 10 walkways in-between tables when you can have 1 simply by implementing moving tables? This maximizes grow space and efficiency. Another interesting aspect of their facility is the water room. The 10 tanks in the water room each serve a specific purpose. Each tank represents a section which gives them the ability to alter the feeding every week depending on what stage the plant is in.

THE LATEST One of the many things we learned that made a lot of sense was the mantra of “giving the plant specifically what it wants and needs.” These needs are: light, water, nutrients, the right humidity and the right temperatures. Indoors, these can be controlled to perfection without having to worry about certain elements such as cloudy days, weather patterns or droughts. It is somewhat of a laboratory so to speak. From the 30 plus A/C units on the roof to the 450 grow lights in the facility, it is evident that everything was well thought out. All this did not happen by accident. The owners traveled to various states touring facilities and finding ways to make their facility the best they could. Nature’s Chemistry is made up of 4 local owners who put their blood, sweat and tears into this endeavor. This seems to trickle down

11

TAHOE CANNABIS // #775TCM //

TAHOECANNABISMAG.COM

THE LATEST to the staff as well. Every staff member we met was friendly and seemed to like working there. Simply put, it was a “good environment.” When talking to the owners they could not stop stressing how important the “team” is to the success of the company. According to them, everyday presents a new challenge and obstacle to overcome, but with determination and hard work failure is not an option. This summer, the company is launching a new “Diamond Exclusive” line. This line will be available in select dispensaries and will highlight some of their premier flower.

12

Although running the business takes up a tremendous amount of their time, they find time to give back to the community. They help and support the Raiders Boxing Club in their area. A boxing club that gives local kids a place to train after school. As you can tell from our words, we were thoroughly impressed with this company. Their passion and dedication are visible and clear. It makes us feel good that the state of the cannabis industry is in the hands of a team as diligent as the team at Nature’s Chemistry.

LICENSING TRANSPARENCY

I

t’s estimated that Nevada’s legalization of cannabis for both medical and recreational use is currently generating approximately $500 million a year in revenue, which is good news for educational facilities statewide earmarked to benefit from sales and licensing fees. Nevada’s entrepreneurial spirit towards both legalizing cannabis use and licensing vendors is what makes it stand out as a national leader in the industry. The state’s Department of Taxation issued 61 dispensary licenses in 2018, but unfortunately the majority of these licenses went to only a handful of companies. A large number of small businesses applying for licensure were completely left out of the process. This is counterproductive to Nevada’s entrepreneurial spirit and, frankly, is simply wrong.

14

In response to this injustice, dozens of marijuana companies have joined a lawsuit against the Department of Taxation alleging irregularities in the licensing procedure. They allege there was no diversity, as required by state law, in the license selections. Also, the complaint alleges that the Department of Taxation

}

COMPETITION IS WHAT’S NEEDED IN NEVADA’S GROWING CANNABIS INDUSTRY

used temp workers with no marijuana industry experience to evaluate applications. According to records, 32 of the licenses were awarded to only four companies, which included a company from Illinois receiving 11 of the prized licenses. Critics of the lawsuit wrongly argue that the lawsuit will slow down the licensing process and deprive the state of revenue. In reality, what they are shrouding in their argument is their desire to keep the licensing pool small so they can become wealthier, due to the fact that they have already been licensed

and don’t want any more competition. Licensing transparency and fair competition in the medical and recreational cannabis industry will only make it stronger and less advantageous to corruption, while simultaneously growing the base of companies contributing to the Department of Taxation’s coffers. Earlier this month Gov. Steve Sisolak signed into law Senate Bill 32, which made marijuana licensure more transparent in that the public will now know who applied for a license and how their applications were

evaluated by the Department of Taxation. This is an excellent step in the right direction if Nevada truly wants to be the “Gold Standard” in licensing and regulation. Now, hopefully, current and future small cannabis businesses won’t be frozen out of the licensing process. Kema Ogden is the co-owner of Top Notch THC, a cannabis dispensary and cultivation business based in Las Vegas, NV. She is a business entrepreneur, philanthropist and executive director of two Southern Nevada 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organizations.

TALES FROM THE CRIP

By Peter Jay

How Much is too Much? Stem cell treatment: $50,000. Aggressive leukemia treatment: $175,000. Hepatitis A, B or C treatment: $300,000. Spinal muscular atrophy treatment: $2 million.

Pharma could charge whatever they wanted and I would go back to prostitution in order to fund said treatment. In fact, I have been planning a side hustle where I go to a strip club, stark naked, and charge people to put on my clothes. If I do not manscape beforehand, I can clear $300 in about 20 minutes.

I am always hollering about how the FDA works. Simply put, it is said to cost between two and three billion dollars to go from research to prescription for any new medication. Additionally, if one in 100 drugs reaches FDA fruition, that is a lot. This means that pharmaceutical companies spend an awful lot of money looking for that home-run drug. Medical care in the US can be...pricey. Or outrageously fucking expensive, depending on your perspective. The disease that I celebrate every year (in April), multiple sclerosis, requires medications that can cost up to $100,000 per year and don’t even provide a cure. The part that gets tiresome is the fact that I’ve been hearing that a cure is “just around the corner” for the last 20 years, and all I keep seeing are corners. I mean, without corners, everything would be round, but that is beside the point. Let’s put a pin in this topic for just a second. I read recently about a device called a Sarco. A Sarco (short for sarcophagus) is a euthanasia device that provides users the release of death through the use of nitrogen gas, which apparently provides a peaceful transition to the next plane of existence. I mean, that’s great and all; I would rather die peacefully than in flames, but still. Observation demonstrates that the right to die movement, though relatively quiet, is gaining momentum. There are fewer states in this country that provide physician assisted suicide then provide legal marijuana, but they are out there. be At the

Not to be unsettling, but might there some connection here? If not now, then in the future? what point does whoever is paying exorbitant medical bills get tired of doing so? Then what? job and interests that I enjoy and sufficient funding to keep the wolf from the door. Still, I am kind of fucked up, disability-wise. You know those corners that I referenced earlier? The one that the cure for multiple sclerosis is just around? When they do find said corner, and I am sure that they will (eventually), it is going to be outrageously expensive. Something that would cure me AND repair me? Big Pharma could charge whatever they wanted and I would go back to prostitution in order to fund said treatment. In fact, I have been planning a side hustle where I go to a strip club, stark naked, and charge people to put on my clothes. If I do not manscape beforehand, I can clear $300 in about 20 minutes. My fear is this: at some point, society or representatives thereof are going to decide whether somebody gets to live or gets to die. BASED ON MONEY! When Obamacare first came out, quite the fuss was made out of “death panels” (medical professionals charged with the evaluation of expense vs. life), and I guess this is no different. On the plus side, I am entertaining as hell, so hopefully they won’t be loading me into a Sarco anytime soon. Not that anybody is going to cram me in against my will; our self-worth is tied to so much in our lives that if we feel that we are a burden to those who we love, perhaps we are not going to fight the Sarco that hard after all. Well THAT was grim, wasn’t it?! Totally dystopian. Harrison Bergeron would be proud! Do I see my scenario absolutely happening? Not at all, although the Sarco absolutely does exist and its creator wants to publish the 3D-printer plans online for public consumption. Perhaps that will be The Final Question asked of us before we begin the next crazy-expensive treatment: Can you AFFORD to get cured? You’d better hope that you can! DEAR MARY JANE An advice column from the Grande Dame of Marijuana

Dear Mary Jane: Man, I used to think that Reno was a cool town. I feel so disillusioned! Here is what happened. My buddies and I came to visit from Niagara Falls, New York, and we were looking to have a good time. By good time, I mean smoke a lot of legal marijuana and stare at all of the pretty lights in the casinos. Part A, the acquisition phase, was easy; we wandered into a dispensary and walked out 20 minutes later with a LOT of marijuana! Part B, the consumption phase, did not turn out nearly as well as we would have hoped. Do you know what we learned? Churches do not approve of you smoking marijuana during services. Restaurants get all huffy if you light up between the appetizer and main course. Don’t even ask me about the strip clubs- while there may be no sex in the Champagne room, there is definitely no marijuana back there. So, where in the world am I supposed to go and consume this legal marijuana? Love, Pissed Off Paul from Pine Avenue

Hello my dear Paul! Thank you for taking the time to write to me! It always pleases me that people from all over the country get to enjoy my inspired lunacy. First off, I am sorry that our marijuana policy did not live up to your expectations. I get it. I mean, with all of the shows and casinos and sharks and shit like that, for them not to provide smoking space is just rude. I mean, some might suggest that you could just stay home on Pine Avenue and smoke to your heart’s content, but I am judgment free. Mostly. Inadvertently or not, however, you do make an excellent point. You can buy a BIG old sack of weed legally here. But where are you supposed to smoke it? As you learned, most public places do not allow its customers to consume therein. I certainly hope that you did not attempt to light up on a casino floor somewhere, because they have even less sense of humor than 1970s police about that shit. Again, while marijuana is legal in the state of Nevada, the Federal government is still completely against it. This means that the casinos are against it, as are any other organizations which in any way rely on support from the G. There is some light at the end of the tunnel, however. For instance, down in Vegas, the Las Vegas City Council recently passed an ordinance allowing marijuana lounges to be created, and they are predicting the first one opening before the end of the year. Pretty cool, right? Well, as always, it is complicated. For the first evolution of this new law, only

certain dispensaries would be allowed to open consumption lounges. Now, I would imagine that the lion’s share of dispensary consumption lounge business will be from tourists. This is good, because tourists bring revenue and we want to take good care of them. I had a difficult time internalizing the concept of a marijuana consumption lounge. Are you supposed to bring your own hardware? Can you get arrested for having smoking equipment with the residue inside of it? You wouldn’t think so, but I do not know so that would raise a question in my mind. Fortunately, a recent conversation with my angel Samantha, who serves also as my physical therapist, told me about the smoking lounges that she had visited in San Francisco. Apparently, it is just like a good sports bar except there is no alcohol and you can rent whatever smoking devices tickle your fancy. Fancy tickling notwithstanding, this does sound like a good business model. I still think that there will be issues with police lurking outside of lounges looking for intoxicated drivers using standards that do not yet exist, but I guess we will cross that bridge when we come to it. Any road, chances are goodto-excellent that the smoking situation will be vastly improved upon your next return. Puff puff give, fool! And give my regards to the gang at the Como on Pine Avenue.

CBD & Cannabis DOSAGE GUIDE

High dose? Low dose? CBD? THC? Optimizing one's therapeutic use of cannabis may take some experimentation. It can be relatively easy to experience medical benefits from cannabis. A puff or two of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)rich flower can do the trick for a lot of people. Smoking marijuana, however, is not the be-all and end-all of cannabis therapeutics. There are many ways to experience the medical benefits of cannabis, and some of them are even non-intoxicating. In recent years, the advent of potent cannabis oil concentrates, non-intoxicating cannabidiol(CBD) products, and innovative, smokeless delivery systems have transformed the therapeutic landscape and changed the national conversation about cannabis.

“Dosing cannabis is unlike any therapeutic agent to which I was exposed in my medical training,” says Dustin Sulak, D.O., the director of Integr8 Health, which serves patients at offices in Maine and Massachusetts. “Some patients effectively use tiny amounts of cannabis, while others use incredibly high doses. I’ve seen adult patients achieve therapeutic effects at 1 mg of total cannabinoids daily, while others consume over 2000 mgs daily without adverse effects.”

It’s no longer a question whether marijuana has medical value. Now it’s about figuring out how to optimize your therapeutic use of cannabis to suit your lifestyle and situation.

Cannabis comes in many different forms with a wide range of potencies, and its production and distribution have yet to be standardized in states where cannabis is legal for therapeutic use. So what’s the best way to proceed when it seems like cannabis dosage is all over the map?

DOCTORS AND CANNABIS DOSAGE

MICRODOSING FOR BEGINNERS

Optimizing therapeutic cannabis use can be a challenge – for doctors as well as patients. Most physicians never learned about cannabis in medical school and, according to a 2017 survey, few feel they are qualified to counsel patients about dosage, CBD:THC

32

ratios, different modes of administration, and potential side effects.

One of the common misconceptions about cannabis therapy is that you have to get high to attain symptom relief. “Most people are surprised to learn that the therapeutic effects of cannabis can be achieved at dosages lower than those required to produce euphoria

or impairment,” says Dr. Sulak, who asserts that “ultra-low doses can be extremely effective, sometimes even more so than the other [highdose] extreme.” Preclinical science lends credence to the notion that a small amount of THC can confer health benefits. Oral administration of a low dose of THC (1 mg/day) resulted in significant inhibition of disease progression” in an animal model of heart atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), according to a 2005 report in Nature, which noted: “This effective dose is lower than the dose usually associated with psychotropic effects of THC.” Because of federal cannabis prohibition and consequent research restrictions, clinical data is lacking to determine if low dose THC therapy can protect against atherosclerosis in humans. But this much is certain: The practice of micro-dosing – which entails the consumption of a sub-psychoactive or slightly psychoactive dose of cannabis – is gaining popularity among those who want the medical benefits of cannabis without the buzz. Although banned by federal law, cannabis medicine is currently accessible in the form of concentrated oil extracts, infused sublingual

sprays, tinctures, edibles, gel caps, topical salves and other products.

MANAGING PSYCHOACTIVITY

The successful use of cannabis as a medicine largely depends on managing its intoxicating properties. Many people enjoy the cannabis high; for others it’s unpleasant. A person’s sensitivity to THC, the main intoxicating component of cannabis, is key to implementing an effective treatment regimen. “The practice of micro-dosing – which entails the consumption of a sub-psychoactive or slightly psychoactive dose of cannabis – is gaining popularity among those who want the medical benefits of cannabis without the buzz.” Cannabidiol (CBD) does not cause an intoxicating high like THC. CBD can actually lessen or neutralize the THC high, depending on how much of each compound is present in a particular product. A greater ratio of CBD-to-THC means less of high. Today cannabis patients have the option of healing without feeling high. Broadly speaking, there are three types of resin-rich cannabis and cannabis products: Type 1 (THC-dominant) – High THC, low CBD (famously

intoxicating cannabis varietals)

main types of cannabis?

Type 2 (THC & CBD) – Mixed THC and CBD cultivars (intoxicating, but not as edgy as THC-dominant varietals)

“START LOW, GO SLOW”

Type 3 (CBD-dominant) – High CBD, low THC (non-euphoric marijuana or hemp) There’s also a fourth type – those rare cannabis cultivars that prominently express a so-called minor cannabinoid (like CBG or THCV). But in terms of what’s currently available for patients, the THC:CBD ratio is paramount and must be considered when formulating dosage strategies. So, what’s the appropriate dosage for each of the three

The adage “start low and go slow” is apropos for cannabis therapy, in general, and THC titration in particular, as discussed by Caroline MacCallum and Ethan Russo in a January 2018 article in the European Journal of Internal Medicine. The authors, who are both physicians, provide sensible guidelines for health professionals and patients regarding the judicious administration of (Type 1) THC-dominant medicinal preparations. If a new patient is going to smoke or vape THC-rich cannabis, Russo and

MacCallum suggest they start with a single inhalation and wait 15 minutes before inhaling again. The effects of inhaled cannabis usually can be felt within a few minutes, thereby providing quick relief of acute distress. If need be, one can inhale an additional puff every 15 to 30 minutes “until desired symptom control is achieved.”

ingesting the equivalent of 1.25 to 2.5 mg of THC shortly before bedtime for two days. If there are no unwanted side effects, increase the bedtime dose of THC by another 1.25 to 2.5 mg for the next two days. Continue to increase the dose of THC by an additional 1.25 to 2.5 mg every other day until the desired effects are achieved.

As for oral administration, one should keep in mind that it can take 60 to 90 minutes before the effects of a single dose are felt.

If there are adverse side effects, reduce the dose of THC to the prior amount that was well tolerated.

MacCallum and Russo suggest a carefully titrated regimen for consumption of ingestible THC-rich cannabis products. They recommend that patients with little or no experience using cannabis should start by

DIFFERENT TYPES, DIFFERENT DOSAGE TYPE 1 – TITRATING THC For adequate symptom relief, some patients may need to ingest a cannabis preparation two or three times during

daylight hours in addition to their night-time regimen. Cautious titration is urged: On days 1 and 2, start with one dose of the equivalent of 2.5 mg THC; on days 3 and 4, increase to 2.5 mg THC twice a day; and, if well tolerated, up the dose incrementally to a total of 15 mg THC (divided equally throughout the day).

stronger therapeutic punch. With cannabis, however, it’s not so simple. THC and other cannabis components have biphasic properties, meaning that low and high doses generate opposite effects. Small doses of cannabis tend to stimulate; large doses sedate.

“Doses exceeding 20-30 mg/ day [of THC] may increase adverse events or induce tolerance without improving efficacy,” MacCallum and Russo warn. Adverse events mainly pertain to THC and are dose-dependent. Very high doses are more likely to cause unwanted side effects. “Adverse events mainly pertain to THC and are dosedependent. Very high doses are more likely to cause unwanted side effects.”

In practical terms, this means that starting low and gradually upping the dose of cannabis will produce stronger effects at first. But, after a certain point, “dosage increases can result in weaker therapeutic effects,” according to Dr. Sulak, “and an increase in side effects.” It is important to note that every body responds to THC differently, and builds tolerance at different rates. Check in with yourself often while consuming cannabis to gauge the effects and side effects.

For most medications, a higher dose will pack a

There are some negative side effects that can result from

over-consumption. Sulak observes that “symptoms of cannabis overdose closely mirror the symptoms one would expect cannabis to relieve at appropriate doses: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, spasms, tremors, anxiety, panic attacks, paranoia, dis-coordination, and disturbed sleep. Extreme overdoses can lead to hallucinations and even acute psychosis.” By introducing small amounts of THC into your system, and increasing the dosage slowly, you minimize the risk of negative side effects. The goal is to take a large enough dose of THC to achieve therapeutic effects and a small enough dose to minimize negative side effects.

TYPE 2 - THC AND CBD: THE POWER COUPLE CBD and THC are the

power couple of cannabis therapeutics. Both compounds have remarkable medicinal attributes, and they work better in combination than as isolates. CBD can synergistically enhance THC’s antiinflammatory and pain killing properties, while reducing unwanted side effects. A 2010 report in the British Journal of Pharmacology analyzed the effects of THC and CBDalone and in combination in an animal model of colitis. This preclinical study concluded that “CBDincreased some effects of an ineffective THC dose to the level of an effective one.” This is one of the many gifts of CBD: It can magnify the medicinal impact of a small amount of THC so that one need not consume an intoxicating dose to experience THC’s therapeutic benefits. A clinical study published in the Journal of Pain examined the efficacy of different dosage levels of Sativex, a cannabis-derived sublingual spray with 1:1 CBD:THC ratio, which is an approved medication in two dozen countries (but not in the United States). Of 263 cancer patients who were not finding pain relief with opiates, the group that received 21 mg of Sativex each day experienced significant improvements in pain levels, more so than the group that received 52 mg Sativex daily. And those given

even higher doses (83 mg daily) reduced their pain no better than a placebo, but they experienced more adverse effects. Although many patients do well at the lowest effective dose, some benefit from a high dose cannabis oil regimen. Often these patients engage in a regimen that includes a substantial amount of CBD as well as THC. By reducing THC’s intoxicating effects, CBD makes high potency cannabis oil treatment easier to manage. If high doses are necessary, steady titration over several weeks will help build tolerance to THC’s tricky intoxicating effects. Cannabis therapeutics is personalized medicine. There is no single CBD:THC ratio or dosage that’s optimal for everyone. As little as 2.5 mg of CBD combined with a small amount of THC can have a therapeutic effect. If necessary, much higher doses of good quality CBD-rich formulations are safe and well tolerated. For patients new to cannabis, it may be best to start with low doses of a CBD-rich remedy (with little THC) and increase the dosage (and, if necessary, the amount of THC) step-bystep. Take a few small doses over the course of the day, rather than one big dose. But a low-THC product is not always the best treatment option. A more balanced combination of CBD and THC could have a greater impact than CBD or THC alone. In essence, the goal is to administer consistent, measurable doses of a CBD-

rich remedy with as much THCas a person is comfortable with. Experiment, observe the effects, and adjust the amount of CBD and THCuntil one finds the sweet spot with the right combination of both compounds.

TYPE 3 – FULLSPECTRUM CBDRICH EXTRACTS

Microdosing cannabis is a feasible option for those who prefer not to leap over the intoxicating threshold. High dose CBD therapy is another way of healing without the high. As a general rule, Type 3 CBDdominant cannabis (with little THC) won’t make a person feel stoned. Nor will a pure CBD isolate (with no THC). But CBD isolates lack critical aromatic terpenes and other cannabinoids, which interact synergistically to enhance CBD’s therapeutic benefits. Single molecule cannabinoids are simply not as versatile or as efficacious as whole plant formulations. Preclinical research indicates that full spectrum CBD-rich cannabis oil is effective at much lower doses and has a wider therapeutic window than a CBD isolate. “The therapeutic synergy observed with plant extracts results in the requirement for a lower amount of active components, with consequent reduced adverse side effects,” a 2015 Israeli study concluded. In animal studies, CBD isolates require very high – and precise – doses to be effective. Problematic drug interactions are also more likely with a high-dose CBD isolate than with whole plant cannabis. Hemp-derived CBD isolates

and distillates are already available via numerous internet storefronts. If you’re shopping for hemp-derived products online, there can be some quality issues to address before purchasing. Drug companies are also eyeing single molecule CBD as a treatment for intractable epilepsy, psychosis, and other diseases. In a 2012 clinical trial involving 39 schizophrenics at a German hospital, 800 mg of pure pharmaceutical-grade CBD proved to be as effective as standard pharmaceutical treatments without causing the harsh side effects typically associated with antipsychotic drugs. But a follow-up study at Yale University found little cognitive improvement in schizophrenics who were given a CBD isolate.

PHARMACEUTICAL CBD

Bereft of the THC stigma (and its therapeutic moxy), single-molecule CBD recently became a FDA-approved pharmaceutical for pediatric seizure disorders. This is good news for families with epileptic children that have health insurance. Anyone without health insurance won’t be able to afford Epidiolex, a nearly pure CBD remedy developed by GW Pharmaceuticals as an anti-seizure medication. Consider the dosage range utilized in clinical trials of epidiolex. Children with catastrophic seizure disorders were given up to 20 mg of epidiolex per kg of body weight. Such high doses caused interactions with other anticonvulsant medications, requiring adjustments of the latter to avoid a toxic overdose.

By comparison, Dr. Bonni Goldstein, author of Cannabis Revealed, typically starts with a much lower dose of full spectrum CBD-rich oil (1 mg CBD/kg of body weight) for epileptic children – with the understanding that the dose may have to be lowered or raised depending on the initial response. If necessary, Goldstein will increase the dose of CBD by increments of 0.5 mg/kg until a threshold of 5 mg/kg of body weight is reached. And that amount also may need to be adjusted. Kids and adults metabolize drugs differently. It may seem counterintuitive, but young children can tolerate high doses of cannabis oil concentrates, including THCrich formulations, which might be daunting for an adult. Thus, it’s not a good idea to calculate dosage for an adult based on what works for a child. If 1 mg/kg of CBD is an appropriate starting dose for a child, and an adult weighs 15 times more than the child, one should not assume that the correct CBD starting dose for the grown-up is 15mg/kg of body weight. That could be way too high a dose. While CBD has no known adverse effects at any dose, an excessive amount of CBD may be less effective therapeutically than a moderate dose.
Similarly, it’s not a good idea to devise a dosage regimen based on data from preclinical animal studies, which usually involve high doses of single-molecule cannabinoids. Human metabolism differs from mice and rats, and data from animal models doesn’t always translate to human experience.

PERSONALIZED MEDICINE

For people as well as pets, cannabis dosage must be individually determined. Several factors come into play, including one’s overall health and endocannabinoid tone, which are influenced by diet, exercise, sleep patterns, dayto-day stress, and genetics. Cannabis is best used as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some dosage variables to consider: •

Cannabis experience. Has the patient used cannabis before? Or are they a stoner who already uses cannabis every day but isn’t getting the best results? A veteran user may need a higher dose than a new user. Or a chronic user might need a break from getting high to reboot his or her sensitivity to cannabis (see Dr. Dustin Sulak’s cannabis “sensitization protocol” on Healer.com).
Time of day. Optimizing one’s therapeutic use of cannabis may entail using products with different CBD:THC ratios at different times of the day – more

CBD for daylight hours, more THC at night.
Preventive dosing. Prolonged low dose therapy may be advantageous for managing chronic symptoms or to prevent disease recurrence. Preclinical studies indicate that cannabinoids have neuroprotective and cardioprotective properties that could limit the damage of a traumatic brain injury or a heart attack.
Cannabinoid acids. Raw, unheated cannabis contains CBD and THC in their “acid” form, CBDA and THCA, which are not intoxicating. Consumed orally over several months, cannabinoid acids can be effective in very small amounts, but precise dosing is difficult when juicing raw cannabis. Other delivery systems are becoming available for CBDA-rich and THCA-rich products.

Cannabis is a safe and forgiving medicine. Figuring out how to make the most of its healthenhancing properties may

A day in the life of Cecilia Sivertson, Founder of Nana’s Secret, Seattle, Washington For nearly 50 years the founder of Nana’s Secret of Washington state, Cecilia Sivertson, medicated with pharmaceuticals for epilepsy. Diagnosed at the age of 12, she had been prescribed 15 types of drugs over that time in an attempt to control the seizures. “In 2013, at the age of 55, I began getting sick from the side effects of these drugs and learned that cannabis and CBD oil would control my seizures without the addictive and damaging side effects,” she shared. “I created Nana’s Secret and began reducing

the pharma drugs, namely Lamictal and Topiramate.” After two years, in 2015, Sivertson said she was hospitalized with a brain trauma, which took away her memory and left her with severe anxiety and depression. According to Cecilia, her pharmacist advised that the drug Lamictal should have been reduced by 12.5 milligrams every three to four weeks, to be on the safe side. Today, she is down from 400 milligrams to 100 milligrams of Lamictal. Sivertson emphasized the learning curve of titrating down pharmaceuticals while adding cannabis to her regiment. “Always talk to your doctor about how to lessen your prescription medications before replacing or going off of them,” she informed. “I believe the brain trauma I suffered was due to going off the meds too quickly, while not having the right dosing protocols when I added the cannabis.” After being released from the hospital she began taking whole plant extract of cannabis, as she contracted aseptic meningitis – one of the symptoms listed in fine print for Lamictal, with multiple people hospitalized from the side effect, and class action lawsuits pending. “I’m still battling the withdrawal from this drug,” she continued. “I was told my entire life I would die without these drugs, but my quality of life had been greatly reduced. Knowledge is power, and people need to educate themselves.” Sivertson said she took cannabis concentrate every day for more than a year, switching to CBD oil capsules morning and night. “I had to re-learn about my personal life, as well as my business, and am now more convinced than ever that cannabis is the only medicine I need to control my epilepsy.” Sivertson shared that she now takes 40 milligrams of CBD capsules each morning and night to control the seizures and

subsequent symptoms from the pharmaceuticals she took for decades. The type of CBD oil she takes is referred to as Hemp, as it contains less than .03 percent THC, hybridized from cannabis.

BRANDING

“I smoke cannabis during the day, as needed – if I feel shaky, anxiety or am experiencing nausea,” she explained. “CPC in Seattle provides me with a mustier of cultivars. Micro-dosing works best for me.” CPC is a CBD concentrate company based in Seattle, and have been providing Sivertson with remedies, keeping her alive since she discovered them in 2013. “Harlequin is just one cultivar I’ve used,” she explained. “I’m currently using True OG, a high THC cultivar for smoking, with a mixture of cultivars currently being processed for my products by CPC. I’m still learning, but I have flashbacks from the past, daily. I spend most of my time learning about my business and how I can use this knowledge to help other children avoid the horrible drugs I was on.” Harlequin is a CBD cultivar, developed in Southern Humboldt by the late hybridizer, Lawrence Ringo, who developed many of the CBD only cultivars we have today. This includes Charlotte’s Web of Denver, with its lineage from Southern Humboldt and Ringo’s farm. Sivertson’s products have not launched yet, but will include cannabis-infused sodas, a transdermal patch, and a skin care line being developed for her brand now. “My favorite product is my transdermal patch, as It allows mothers the ability to treat their children with medicine that is as simple to apply as a band aid!” she joyfully exclaimed. “It has 25 milligrams of cannabis and can last up to 12 hours, before replacing.” Sivertson said she would like everyone to understand how simple medicating with cannabis can be, asking patients and parents of children with epilepsy to do their own research on their individual medical conditions. She also encourages patients to read the fine print of the side effects of the pharmaceuticals prescribed. “I was not even aware of the side effects until my pharmacist handed me the paperwork,” she informed. “I would encourage anyone on these damaging drugs to try cannabis or CBD just one time. If you have a condition like cancer, epilepsy, diabetes or more, cannabis can help. The pharma drugs were killing me slowly, and cannabis saved my life.” For more information on Nana’s Secret visit, www. nanasecret.com

KNOW MOMMY

Is Cannabis Safe While Breastfeeding? One of the most frequent questions asked by women interested in using cannabis during their postpartum period is, “Can I safely use marijuana while breastfeeding?” I wish I could give a solid yes or no so women and their families can feel they are making the healthiest and most informed decision. Unfortunately, there is not a clear answer to this question as the data currently in the United States is insufficient. Many of the women in the scientific studies lifestyles and nutritional habits varied, were using tobacco or consuming illegal drugs making the results inconclusive. Women want to use cannabis to cope with pain, anxiety, pms, digestive issues, sleep issues, mental health struggles and more. Cannabis, also known as marijuana, produces a group of chemicals called cannabinoids which produce mental and physical effects when consumed including euphoria and mood changes. The active ingredient delta-9-THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol, THC), acts on the CB1 cannabinoid receptor and is the main psychoactive compound. Humans have an endocannabinoid system in their bodies. The endocannabinoid system helps the body manage anxiety, inflammation, and other physiological responses to different forms of stress. Endocannabinoids (EC) are signaling molecules that trigger the activation of the EC system when they are detected by cannabinoid receptors. When a person smokes marijuana, THC overwhelms the EC system, quickly attaching to cannabinoid receptors throughout the brain and body. THC and CBD bind heavily to fat, and fat is a main nutrient in breastmilk. Government guidelines currently recommend that cannabis should be avoided by nursing Mothers and should be warned that cannabis can be detected in breastmilk. However, many women wonder just because the chemicals are detectable does that mean they are harmful? The American Academy of Pediatrics states there is no evidence for the safety or harm of marijuana use during lactation but that nursing mothers should abstain from using the drug. La Leche League international says: “The effects of cannabis in breastmilk on babies’ development are controversial. Some studies indicate that there is no impact on babies’ long term development, others find that motor development at the age of one is slightly reduced in babies who were regularly exposed. Researchers are divided on whether the risks to the baby of cannabis exposure are outweighed by the protective effects of breastmilk.”

By: Janelle Johngrass

Marijuana is the most commonly used recreational drug during lactation according to Jamie Seabrook, an associate professor in the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences at Brescia University College in London, Ont. Jamie has done recent studies on cannabis use during breastfeeding and believes that, “marijuana use during lactation is going to continue to go up.” Since marijuana consumption is going up and more and more women are coming forward and wanting to turn to cannabis instead of over-the-counter or prescribed medications, we need new studies done. Dr. Thomas Hale, who is a leading researcher of medication and breastfeeding stated: “The InfantRisk Center gets thousands of calls about marijuana. Unfortunately, the breastmilk data is old and was poorly done years ago. We desperately needed some good pharmacokinetic data in order to determine what the risk to the infant really is. Thus, Dr. Teresa Baker and I set up a good pharmacokinetic study in Colorado where mothers could participate “anonymously” using a measured standard dose of marijuana (23.8 mg), and with collection of milk samples at accurate time intervals ( 0, 20 min, 1, 2, 4 hours). Thus, we are going to be able to determine with great accuracy just how much marijuana is actually transferred to the infant under this standardized method. The samples are slowly coming in. It’s too soon to know, but I’m thinking the relative infant dose is going to be small and the oral absorption poor. This study, we hope, is just the beginning, as much more needs done, such as oral dosing studies, blood level studies in mom and infant, different metabolites and forms of THC, etc. If it’s documented that the level of drug in milk is low to undetectable, then we feel more comfortable moving the LRC (lactation risk category). We may this year change the LRC for marijuana if the levels in milk are exceedingly low as I suspect. But we will have to wait on this.” This means we are going to have to wait a little longer for science and research to catch up before we can have a solid answer on this controversial issue. For now, women can make a decision about using cannabis while breastfeeding by speaking with their medical providers, hearing the stories of other women and listening to their own intuition. It’s important to note other factors to consider are the possibility of positive urine tests which might have legal implications. If you do not want any psychoactive properties you can use CBD. CBD, unlike marijuana is legal in all 50 states. CBD has similar pharmacological effects as THC in that it affects the same two cannabinoid receptors, however the magnitude of the effect is much smaller

Cannabis Tolerance: What You Need to Know

C

annabis tolerance is an ongoing factor for patients and

consumers. The development of cannabis tolerance is a welldocumented phenomenon. Simply stated, tolerance refers to the body’s ability to grow accustomed to the chemical effects of cannabis consumption. If you continue to consume cannabis, over time the body becomes used to the constant input and adjusts itself, accordingly.

If you drink one too many cups on a given day, however, the anxiety and jitters can return. The same thing happens with psychoactive cannabis. At first, the effects are strong. They become tolerable with continued consumption, and then they once again become uncomfortable with too high of a dose.

When you first begin to consume cannabis, you may find that the effects of the herb are quite strong.

The negative side effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) Are you using more THC than you need? Or not enough?

With regular consumption, however, these strong effects mellow out and some of the negative side effects of the herb dissipate.

One simple molecule is responsible for the psychotropic “high” caused by cannabis. That molecule is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

This is very similar to what happens in the body after you begin drinking coffee. Your first cup of coffee might make you feel jittery, anxious, dehydrated, and can give you an upset stomach.

THC often gets a bad rap in mainstream media, but the molecule has a host of both scientifically proven and subjective health benefits.

Over time, however, the body grows used to the continuous input of caffeine.

42

You may still feel the energizing and stimulating effects of coffee after years of drinking the beverage, but you likely won’t feel as much of the anxiety and jitteriness that first-time consumers experience.

However, just like a fine wine or beer, THC is an acquired taste. When you first try psychoactive cannabis, THC can have some potent side effects on the brain and body.

Some of these side effects include: Increased heart rate, anxiety, racing thoughts, lowered blood pressure, sedation, feeling cold, and tremor. None of these side effects sound pleasant. So, why is cannabis so popular? Over time, consumers are better able to tolerate THC and these side effects go away. They will come back again if your dose of psychoactive cannabis is too high. It’s also important to note that not everyone will experience these side effects their first time consuming cannabis. Many people reap the positive benefits of the herb the first time they try it. The positive benefits include euphoria, relaxation, happiness, pain relief, and stress relief. Whether or not you experience negative side effects of THC depends largely on your initial dose, environment, and individual biochemistry. It’s important to keep in mind that side effects are common when starting any sort of supplement. When starting a course of probiotics, for example, it is always recommended to start with a small dose and work up to therapeutic levels.

If you take a large dose right away, chances are you’ll end up gassy, bloated, and in pain. Is cannabis tolerance good or bad? Cannabis tolerance can be both beneficial and irritating. For medical cannabis consumers, developing a tolerance to THC allows them to take the high doses of the herb that may be required for their treatment. Tolerance also allows consumers taking small doses of THC for general wellness benefits (perhaps five milligrams of THC and under) to quickly grow accustomed to having the cannabinoid in their system. While five milligrams may be enough to cause a psychoactive effect in novice consumers, those who take this dose regularly may not have much of a psychotropic experience at this dose, if any at all. This effect may be sought after and beneficial in some people. However, tolerance also has a downside. Tolerance to THC happens rather quickly. Even daily cannabis consumers continue to feel the calming and euphoric effects of THC after a puff or two of a pre-roll (joint).

ENLIGHTENMENT

Yet, as consumers grow tolerant to the effects of cannabis, they may find that they need to continuously increase their dose over time in order to feel the same moodboosting and pain-relieving effects of the herb as they did in the beginning.

more money on the herb and will likely face greater symptoms of withdrawal should they stop.

It’s important to keep in mind that tolerance does not mean that you’ll have to consume a whole ounce of cannabis a day just to feel something.

How to avoid getting a cannabis tolerance Don't underestimate the health benefits of low-dose cannabis.

Rather, cannabis tolerance can be compared to those who need one cup of coffee a day to get going versus those who need two or three.

Those using cannabis to treat a medical condition should consult a canna-savvy doctor about whether or not developing a tolerance would be beneficial for their particular situation.

Those who need two cups of coffee to feel energized in the morning have to deal with the side effect of dehydration more than those who need only one. Similarly, those who need to vaporize a full gram of cannabis instead of just half a gram or less end up spending

Symptoms of cannabis withdrawal include headache, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, and irritability.

However, for the average consumer, there are a few ways to both lower your cannabis tolerance or avoid getting one in the first place. Here are a few ways to hack your cannabis tolerance:

1. Micro or low-dose cannabis Microdosing cannabis is opting for very small doses of cannabis over large quantities. Generally speaking, a microdose of psychoactive cannabis is about 2.5 milligrams of THC. Some folks chose to opt for low-dose cannabis instead of a micro-dose. An estimated low dose of cannabis is about five milligrams of THC. If inhaling, one small puff of cannabis can be seen as a low dose. 2. Alternate days THC is fat-soluble and is stored in body fat. This means that THC has a long half-life and can stay in your system for quite some time. Half-life refers to the amount of time a compound is active in the body to decrease by half. Since THC has a long half-life, it may not be necessary to consume the cannabinoid every single day. To avoid developing a cannabis

tolerance, consider staggering the days that you consume the herb. 3. Take breaks If you have been consuming the herb regularly, it may be time to take what is referred to as a “tolerance break”. A tolerance break is a period of abstinence from the plant. The more heavily you consume cannabis, the more likely you are to experience symptoms of withdrawal during a tolerance break. If this is problematic, consider slowly lowering your doses of cannabis over time. Opting for non-psychotropic cannabis varieties may also be beneficial during tolerance breaks. Cannabis cultivars high in cannabidiol (CBD) do not cause a euphoric “high.” However, high-CBD cultivars can still provide moodboosting and calming effects.

Cannabis Insurance Lady I began my insurance career in 2003. Foreseeing the changes within the medical field, leaning toward plant-based healing, cannabis was the next viable option. Foresight prompted me to begin studying the direction of the cannabis industry. And today, well versed in the coverage necessary for those in the cannabis industry, I am able to assist those in need of specialized insurance. So you may think, how hard is it to secure insurance for a cannabis business? It's trickier than you’d expect. That's where knowledge and expertise are paramount. Jumping in with both feet, my determination to advocate for the cannabis industry led me to take my knowledge directly to the product managers of various carriers to help them develop more insurance products for the industry. Whether you are a cultivator, dispensary, accessory business, or future smoke lounge within the cannabis industry, you may be wondering why you need insurance coverage? The businesses noted above, have the risk of being sued relating to consumption, improper labeling and failure to warn, just to name a few. The cannabis industry is susceptible to lawsuits, more so because the industry is still in its infancy stage in establishing the cannabis products in the market. The areas of risk are rapid financial growth, with no banks to park the money, which poses higher risk for crime. If the wrong label is placed on packaging, then sold and consumed by the client, the client could come back and sue the cultivator, dispensary and even the person delivering the product. Ensuring you have checks and balances in place for all of the above is important. In addition, the proper product liability and recall coverage must be in place to protect your cannabis business. The proper insurance coverage in place will help alleviate the expensive legal fees due to one’s error. Many product liability coverage policies are excluding some very important coverage’s that the cannabis industry needs, which I will discuss next. After reviewing other carrier’s policies, I became concerned that they were not providing coverage truly

needed, rather they were excluding these coverages without an option to buy back the coverage. Thankfully, there is a carrier that truly understands the needs of insurance for the cannabis industry and provides a policy that protects these businesses where it is needed most. COVERAGE HIGHLIGHTS I Scheduled cannabis, hemp and CBD products I Defense outside of limits I Covers injuries stemming from intoxication, impairment, and health risks such as: Respiratory disease, mental illness, cancer, birth defects, heart disease and communicable disease I Vaporizing products I Asbestos, Silica, Lead, Mold, Fungi and Bacteria I Product Withdrawal endorsement available which provides coverage against claims arising from commercial cannabis activity for businesses operating in accordance with the laws and regulations of the state. he grunted an affirmative response to her daughter and continued watching the crashing waves hurl themselves against the shore. Natasha gave her mother a kiss then asked if she wanted one of the panoramic windows opened to better enjoy the sound and scent of the sea. Ami smiled and reached for her daughter’s hand in gratitude. “I’ll brew some coffee while you think about breakfast.” The salty breeze coming off the ocean below, along with the communal cawing of the seagulls was indeed, invigorating. How she loved living here. A smile spread across her face as another, more unctuous scent wafted its way through the window. It seems funny now all those rallies she had attended, all those signs and buttons she carried and wore, declaring Weed should be legalized. Ami’s mind drifted back to another similar day in June, many years ago. It was the first time she had visited Monterey. Remembering blurred into dreaming . . . *

*

*

*

Always considered a well-behaved and level-headed daughter, at seventeen, Ami began rebelling; sort of. It all started when she dropped out of Brigham Young University, followed by her Canna-caper and now includes her current living situation. Homesickness and feelings of not fitting in, led to daily phone calls pleading with her father to leave school. After just one semester, he finally consented and sent her a plane ticket for home. Two weeks after settling back in, Ami, the proverbial go-to friend, agreed to care for three fledging Cannabis plants. Allowed to do their own thing on the rear dashboard of her Dodge Rambler, the plants began growing . . . well, like Weeds. Likely the warmth of the car, circulating air from partially opened windows and the balance of sunlight, darkness and occasional watering, the plants essentially lived in a mobile greenhouse. When they began brushing against the roof of her car, Ami’s father took notice. A lieutenant in the police force, he told her to get rid of the plants. She explained they weren’t hers, but he insisted. One week later, he saw the plants were not only still in the car, they were thriving! Angrier, her father repeated his directive. Ami repeated she couldn’t get rid of them until their rightful owner returned from wherever he was visiting. When her father saw the plants were still there days later, now so large, they looked like creeping vines slithering across the entire backseat, he took matters into his own hands. “What did you do?!” screamed Ami, the following morning as she tossed her purse into the car. This brought her parents outside. Again, Ami shouted her question. Slowly, her father pulled something from behind his back- a can of Drano. Slamming it on the hood of her car, he boomed, “When I tell you

to do something, I expect you to do it! Especially when it’s illegal! Your little Canna-caper is over!” Deciding it was time she do something to get back in her parents’ good graces, Ami signed up for classes at the local junior college. It was there she met and fell in love with her soulmate. Leaving her privileged lifestyle behind, Ami moved in with Jonah, embarking upon a life that was simple, uncomplicated and romantic. *

*

*

*

On this particular Saturday morning instead of lounging, Ami and Jonah woke as the sun opened its eye over the horizon. The young lovers stretched, kissed then jumped out of bed. Ami prepared two cups of tea and wholegrain toast, slathered with butter and orange marmalade. Jonah stuffed backpacks with changes of clothing and scuba equipment. The tanks he would need were waiting for him in Monterey. Ami added some trail mix, oranges, and a couple of joints to the bag. Following Jonah to their battered VW Bus, Ami chatted on like the chirping birds in the trees above. The forty-five minute drive afforded her plenty of time to quiz Jonah on what to expect. They would be meeting up with Henry, one of few remaining friends who served with Jonah as a Navy Seal in Vietnam. Henry’s girlfriend, Aileen, would also be there. Though initially interested in scuba lessons, Ami gave up the idea after seeing the movie “Jaws”. Still, she was excited about being part of Jonah’s dive. Turning onto Ocean View, past the Hovden Cannery, they were surprised how empty downtown Monterey appeared. But it was still early and the tourists had not yet begun to stir. Pulling into a parking spot butted up against a dilapidated warehouse, they spotted Henry’s bright yellow Karmann Ghia. Smoke emitted from the slightly rolled down windows on either side. The curling vapors made the Crayolacoloured vehicle look like a miniature smoking dragon. Watching Henry emerge from the car Ami was slightly taken aback. He had to literally unfold himself to exit. Standing at six foot five, with gangly arms and legs, he was surprisingly muscular. Henry looked to Ami like a mix of Marlboro Man meets Ichabod Crane. Aileen was pretty and of medium build. Her most striking features were her flaming red hair and large, doe-like, grey eyes. During the introductions, Ami was delighted when Aileen spoke. Being of Irish descent she seemed to sing rather than speak. Ami was listening more to Aileen’s lilt than to what she was actually saying and had to be asked twice if she wanted a hit off the joint held between Aileen’s fingers. The sun had not yet broken through the clouds and mist made the weather feel substantially cooler than Ami had anticipated.

TALES OF LIFE & FOOD Rubbing her hands together for warmth, Ami did her best to follow Aileen’s direction on how to assist Jonah for his dive. Aileen laid down a tarp for them to stand on, thus avoiding sand getting into equipment or wetsuits; a bothersome occurrence when shore-diving. When everything was on and secured, with the exception of fins, which they would put on once in the water, the men equalized their air tanks. Ami was suddenly struck with feelings of panic. There weren’t just sharks in that water but all kinds of scary sea life. Aileen sensed her nervousness and sang, “Aw sure, look it. These boys know what they be do’in. No need for worry on our part.” Ami wasn’t so sure. Though her parents didn’t look favourably upon their daughter’s relationship or current living arrangement, Ami was falling deeper in love with Jonah every day. This felt especially true as she observed him entering the massive expanse of agitated water. Making their way across the street, the first stop was a small coffee house. Aileen ordered mugs of Italian cioccolata calda. She assured Ami it would combat the munchies they were experiencing due to their earlier imbibing. A confirmed “chocoholic,” Ami gleefully consumed the piping hot, rich, pudding-like, beverage. With tummies filled and bones warmed, the girls made their way up one side of the street and down the other, venturing into every antique shop they encountered. Before they knew it, a little more than two hours had passed. Hurrying back to their vehicles, they placed their treasures under the seats then walked to the area where they had left the boys. Within moments their two aqua-men emerged from the water each carrying nets ladened with the morning’s catch. Jonah pulled off his cap, freeing his long wavy hair, beams of light shone behind him. He looked like Poseidon. Ami ran to him unable to decide which she was more excited about; his safe return to her or the booty of seafood wriggling and squirming in his net. After changing clothes and setting their catch in the cooler, the four made their way to Henry and Aileen’s apartment. Theirs was larger than Jonah and Ami’s, but the décor was similar. Towards the back was an enclosed porch with two Papasan chairs, along with vintage glassware set upon shelves lining an entire wall. Each displayed tender green sprouts popping up through black soil. But the elephant in the room was what looked to an actual tree. As they drew nearer, it was clear, this was no Chaste tree, but the biggest Cannabis plant Jonah and Ami had ever laid eyes on. Ami was surprised she hadn’t smelled its aromatic scent when they entered. She remembered how her Rambler smelled during her “Canna-caper.” What started as a seed in a five-gallon pot was now the crowned prince of Henry’s growing career. After cutting into the floorboards, then digging a deep, wide hole into the ground, he amended the dirt and let nature take over. Henry only tended to watering, light cycles and the maintenance of bugs. The plant was nearly seven feet tall with a circumference of three feet. Jonah, barely able to contain

himself, asked about the estimated yield. Aileen stated they expected between six or seven ounces of actual bud. After some animated conversation about growing, while smoking, the foursome decided it was time to eat. Aileen invited Ami to join her in the kitchen where she would teach her how to clean and prepare the abalone and shrimp the boys had harvested. She also told Ami they may be Infusing some of the dishes. In relatively short time a meal of fresh abalone, lightly breaded and sautéed in garlicky-Canna-butter atop steamed rice, boiled shrimp, with Infused aioli, and a crisp green salad was on the table. Henry filled four shot glasses with Ouzo. The perfect accompaniment to abalone, he promised. “Opa!” they all cheered. *

“Okay, Mom, coffee’s ready. What’d you decide on for breakfast?” “Opa!” shouted, Ami. “Opa? What’s Opa?” Asked Natasha. “I want abalone and eggs, some Ouzo in my coffee and a little smoke,” stated Ami. “First of all, it isn’t abalone season, Ouzo is out of the question and you haven’t had a little smoke since Dad died,” replied Natasha. “What” Not abalone season? Your dad always dove for abalone in June. How? What’s happened?” Asked Ami, confused. Natasha explained again, how over fishing, expanded regulations and environmental issues had negatively impacted populations of those sweet crustaceans. There were many factors resulting in changes of her mother’s beloved Monterey. Ami sat quiet.

Still befuddled by her mother’s strange breakfast request, Natasha asked, “Mom, what exactly brought on these cravings?” Ami perked up, “Pour my coffee and I’ll tell you a story.

NATURE’S CHEMISTRY Animal Cookies

Nature’s Chemistry should be donating a portion of their profits of Animal Cookie’s to save the animals of the planet that are quickly going extinct. This flower is going to be so popular it may be the only way to save the rhinos and orangutans. A high that will have you climbing trees and running with the pack. Nature’s Chemistry has something special here, so let’s get NC to give back. Because the only thing that would make this flower any better is if a portion of the profits actually helped nature and the last of the animals surviving in it.

REMEDY Island Sweet Skunk Cured Resin Shatter

HELL YES! No exaggeration, this might be the best tasting, overall feeling, pound for pound best shatter I’ve ever dabbed on. Five minutes after hitting it, I’m still breathing sweet fire. I did hit it hard though. Im not one who dabs little baby dabs. Ten minutes later, I’m about to hit it again. Not that I need to, but I deserve to smash this half gram up. I have about 3 dabs left in this packet. 0.1-0.2 gram dabs are perfect. No need to be a hero. Screw it, go be a hero. Bury your head in the Island Remedy Sand, my Sweet Skunks and cure your ailments, or let your dreams shatter as it slips through your fingertips.

Holy Genius! These terps are ridiculous. That’s a grip of limonene, but don’t have a sativa panic attack, my G. Let the myrcene settle in and grab a snack. This much caryophyllene will definitely get your back, and keep stress and depression at bay. OG Kush can undoubtedly push all the right buttons. It’s waiting for you to screw it onto your 5/10 threaded battery. Vape this cartridge wherever you can breathe free air. Don’t despair. Security and cops don’t seem to care. But beware, there is always one hypocritical conservative tobacco using alcoholic rat waiting to blow the whistle. Where is my Tomahawk Missile. I’ll blow that shit up.

Leaping lords of cannabis concentrates. This Remedy Jilly Bean Sauce gave me a humbling wallop to my noggin. It smells so delectable. Everything Remedy turns out is respectable. This sauce is far beyond fuckwithable. It was definitely top 3 for the month, and top 10 for the year. Just a little smear will transcend you from down there to all the way up here in the clouds. What a loud and lovely flavor. Jilly Bean Sauce is one to savor.

Everyone loves the taste of a sweet bush. Lemon Kush is a tasty treat that should be infused into edibles that we can eat. That would be neat! Until then, twist it up, load a bowl, or pack it into your favorite dry-herb vaporizer, and suck this down your hatch. Other lemons are no match. Scratch that idea. Turn the page. Just head on over to your favorite dispensary if you wanna get a rise from this Lemon Kush. I always enjoy a good 1:1 myrcene/limonene terp ratio like a game of Tug-o-War. Your brain is the rope. Growing cannabis is like cooking. Sometimes you nail it perfectly and there isn’t a soul at the table that isn’t impressed by the presentation. Then, once the flavors hit the taste buds, eyes roll back and the adulations begin. One might call this Heaven. GLP’s small batch organically grown Heaven Mountain flower is exactly that. Delicious and heavenly and will have everyone at the table salivating and excited about the next taste. Put this in your mouth and let it take you there!

GLP should have called this strain Mac Daddy because it’s the Mac Daddy of the Green Life strains. I love everything they produce, I mean cultivate. VCM was my favorite strain in GLP’s line-up, but Mac just knocked out the undisputed champ. There was no way VCM was going to submit, so we just took that asswhoopin’. Mac’s ground and pound game was relentless, until the ref stopped the madness. I've never seen a striker deliver this many blows to the head. Somebody call the doctor. There was so much more I wanted to tell you, but before Diablo split, the Devil spit and froze time, making us forget about all the devils in the details. TOKIN’ WITH THE INFAMOUS

Eddy Lepp spent 8½ years of a 10 year sentence in federal prison for growing weed. He’s not only infamous, he is a legend and we all owe him a debt of gratitude. He’s currently working on an initiative that will fix the California legalization fiasco by returning it to the Prop 215 era regulations that were butchered by Prop 64. To follow the progress of the initiative and find out how you can help, just search for OG Eddy Lepp on all social media platforms. Eddy’s been fighting this battle for a long time, and he could use some help.

took 32,524 plants. They came back 5 months later and raided again and got another 11,000 plants. It took about 5-6 years for me to end up going to trial. Like I alluded to earlier, they denied me a medical defense, they denied me a religious defense. They basically told the jury “Mr. Lepp signed this piece of paper saying he owns the property and he knew that was marijuana. You have to convict him, you don’t have a choice.” Due to the jury instructions, that’s just what they did.

Hopper: Last time I saw you was not too long ago at the UnderRated and Garth Vader “Like A Criminal” video shoot. Your cameo and lines in the video are iconic. Tell us about your statement, “I’m not a criminal”.

Eddy: I gotta say that after being gone almost ten years and coming home from prison, there were two things that hit me. One, I was so thrilled and so proud of what this industry has become as far as its growth and what has happened in the ten years I was gone. Then on the other hand, I look at it and I’m somewhat disappointed. In the beginning this was all about helping people. Now I see that it’s 98% about how much money can I make today. They don’t seem to care about people like we did. I’m not sure that’s the case, that’s just what I see on the surface. Another thing I’m terribly disappointed in is the fact that all these people that are in the industry don’t know how the fuck they got there. I find that very, very disappointing. I was talking to some guys at a High Times event in Sacramento, I was in the VIP section and I was talking to these guys from Iowa I think. They were telling me what an overwhelming honor it was for them to be able to sit in the VIP section with somebody that actually was a VIP. I look at these events and I see how badly the people who did what needed to be done are overlooked and neglected, and I find that upsetting. There’s so many hundreds, if not thousands, of people out there who have

Hopper: So let’s go back to the beginning and talk about the raid, the trial, and the sentencing. Eddy: In August 2002, the DEA came in and raided the farm. Five people were taken into custody. At that time, they took around 280-290 plants, they said it was like 1600 kilos or something. Then in 2004, they came in and raided the whole 40 acres and

Hopper: Would you do it all over again?

devoted their lives to this movement, to this plant, and have worked diligently day in and day out, for years upon untold years to get it legal and where it was accepted in society. I find it hurtful that the people making all this money now haven’t taken time to learn how they got to do what they get to do. Hopper: That’s so true. Something I like to say is, be a stoner that cares. Give back. Eddy: Well, I’m gonna be down in Santa Cruz, we’re gonna rewrite the initiative that Jack Herer and I wrote back in 2008. We’re gonna rework it to cover some of these new issues that have come up since Jack passed away. We’re gonna do all we can to get this initiative on the ballot, and basically what it will do is- we’ll go back to Prop 215. Everything post 215, whether it was done by initiative or legislation, will be wiped out. Hopper: That’s awesome news. We really need a warrior like yourself in our corner. I really respect the fact that you’re doing that. Eddy: I’m not a lawyer. I’m not very good at this. Jack and I fought like cats and dogs trying to figure out how to word it and what to say. But I will do it. I’m more than smart enough to go to people I need to go to, to get good advice. We have to make it right. We’ve got to set this industry on its ear, and let them know that we are not your fuckin’ cash cow. You will treat us just like you

treat the strawberry farmers, the walnut orchards, whatever. We’re an agricultural product and you will treat us just like any other agricultural product. No more $35,000 to turn on the god**mn water. If you charge the orchard $700, you’re not gonna charge me more. Hopper: Thank you! We need your no bullshit network to lay it all out there and get it done. Eddy: You know, I’ve lived my life fairly honestly. 25-30 years ago now, I became Rasta. One of the primary prerequisites is that you must live your life by the truth. No lies in, no lies out. I’ll be 68 years old in two weeks. Most guys my age are kicked back with a fishing line in the water, and I’m getting ready to go to war. I’ve been fighting this war since the 60s. I’ve said this before- if I could just get all of these people to stand up one time with me, I promise you’ll never have to stand up again. We need everybody in this state who’s ever looked at a joint, to vote for this initiative and get this passed so we can put an end to the injustices perpetrated not only by the government against us, but by us against the patients and consumers. Now granted, this situation is not necessarily one of our making, but if we don’t try to fix it, who the hell will? Hopper: The Free Eddy Lepp movement was huge. How did it feel to have such major support from the cannabis community? Eddy: I was deeply honored. I

Eddy: Well, I served 8½ years in the Federal Bureau of Prisons for growing cannabis for cancer and AIDS patients and the members of my congregation. The federal government denied me any defense, I was prosecuted even though I hadn’t broken any state laws. To this day I’ve never broken any state cannabis laws. So me saying “I’m not a criminal”, to me, not only is the truth but is something that should be said. Double jeopardy, I guess, applies to everybody but cannabis people. I assumed that when the state didn’t pick up the case, that was the end of it, but I guess not.

would not have survived if it was not for the people on the outside. My family and friends put money on my books and helped me as much as they could, but with me being gone they were all suffering tremendously. I would have lived like somebody’s bitch if it weren’t for the kindness and generosity of all the people out there that put money on my books over the years. I really want to thank Kitty Dunlevy, Heidi Grossman. I’d really like to give a big shoutout to Aundre Speciale and the Cannabis Buyers Club of Oakland, they’ve been a tremendous support. I’m deeply touched by all the people who supported me, because I could not have survived without it. I’d like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I’d like to thank the entertainment industry, specifically the comedians and the hip-hop artists that have embraced me. Redman, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Snoop, Cypress Hill, Kottonmouth Kings, Pony Boy, Peer Pressure, Real One, Woody Harrelson and his brother, Bill Maher. All of these people I’ve met over the years who have done so much to help me. I’m so thankful. And all of the people, and I don’t mean this as an insult, but the little people if you will. The people who have devoted their lives to this and worked so hard. Hopper: What was it like to adjust to life after 8 ½ years in federal prison? Eddy: Well, I can sum that up in a simple little story. Heidi flew to Colorado the day I got out of prison. She and a bunch of other people met me in a motorcade and picked me up and hauled me to the airport in Denver. As soon as I got in the motorhome, Heidi handed me a telephone because I wanted to call my daughter and tell her I was out of prison. I didn’t know how to turn on the phone. Heidi literally had to show me how to use a telephone. That’s what the last year and half, two years has been like for me. There’s been so many changes and so many advances, especially in technology with the Internet and social media. It’s just been overwhelming. Hopper: High Times gave you a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award, that had to have been a proud moment for you! Eddy: It was, and I’ve gotten many

awards. Right after I got out, I got the Brownie Mary Award from the national democratic convention for service and stuff. I’ve had a very good relationship with High Times for many, many years. I was Freedom Fighter of the Year back in the beginning of the century. I’m not sure if they’re still doing the Counterculture Hall of Fame, but if they do I’m sure I’ll get added to that one day. All of these awards and honors mean more to me than anybody will ever know. That said, they’re not mine at all because I could not have done any of this without so many people helping me. Those awards are nice and they make me happy, but they don’t belong to me, they belong to the community. That’s who’s earned them, and that’s who deserves them. Hopper: We already touched on this a bit, but what are your thoughts on the current state of cannabis? Eddy: In two words the cannabis community right now is fucked. Hopper: What do you think the future holds for legalization? Eddy: You mean if things keep going the way they’re going? Hopper: Yes. Eddy: I have a two-word answer for you- It’s fucked. I’ll be as clear as I can- the only way this industry is going to survive and be successful is if everybody in it gets off their asses and helps me pass this initiative! If we don’t protect ourselves, nobody else is going to.

Hopper: We talked about how grateful you are for the huge support network you have. Is there anyone else you want to shout out before we go? Eddy: I’d really like to thank three people, because without them, none of this would have happened. Dennis Peron, Jack Herer, and the little bitty pretty one, my darling wife Linda Senti. I know that God is holding her in His arms right now. They’re all up there smokin’ a fatty laughin’ at me saying, “That poor son of a bitch is still workin’!” Follow Hopper on IG: @hopper448

WITH ROB RUCKUS Well here we are. Almost another year in. And look where we are. Exit bags thrown all over town and filling more landfills. Still don’t see them making pills and booze go in those stupid bags. Licensing for new growers and dispensaries is at a standstill because the state used a temp agency to figure out who would get licenses, and since only the companies that have already sold out to Canadian interests got them, there’s a lawsuit that stopped them. So we’re still paying top dollar for our medicine instead of having competitive pricing. The monopoly continues! Companies are changing hands so fast now that these owners are being handed STUPID money to sell out. I’m talking HUNDREDS of millions of dollars. Now that’s why they got into this industry in the first place, it was ALWAYS just an investment to them. But when it means people can’t get the medicine they want and/or NEED, or have to pay even more money so these folks can pay their stockholders and investors at the price of someone’s health (or life for that matter, if a cancer patient can’t get quality RSO, they may die) that’s when you know that these people are just snakes looking to take money from sick people. Vampires. Vultures. The door has opened, and they are pouring in. The other thing that’s got me pissed this month is about the goddamn system that tracks our meds and the ridiculous guidelines that go on behind the scenes that you readers don’t see. You see, Nevada is a seed-to-sale state. Meaning the second a plant starts growing it is tracked. It has a barcode attached as it grows. Then at harvest it’s weighed. Then tested, then broke up into grams, eighths, quarters, ounces, prerolls, or sent off to be turned into oil for vapes, edibles, and concentrates. EVERY single gram is accounted for. Every milligram of oil that was made with it is accounted for. Each package is counted upon being received at the dispensaries. Then EVERY day we must count EVERY package and let the state know through a tracking website where everything is. That way they know for certain they ain’t losing a penny in taxes and nothing goes to

62

that boogeyman, “the black market”. It’s a huge pain in the ass. The website sucks and constantly has problems that affects everyone that purchases. Because, you figure if they are paying people in the back to figure out all the problems they are causing by not using the millions in tax dollars they have to fix the problems, the dispensary has to add that cost to YOUR bill! We pay for their screw-ups even though we pay them! Here’s an example: recently the state decided they want both the growers and the dispensaries license numbers on the sticker with all the information on each package. So that means someone has to print out thousands of new stickers (because the state won’t allow a second sticker with just the dispensary numbers on it, they want it all on one) and then someone has to affix the stickers to each package. That takes manpower and payroll. Who do you think pays for that? Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Nevada. This is my home. And this is my industry. I sell and educate people about cannabis. I’ve been doing it my whole life. I’ll continue to do so till the day I die. But it’s the fucking greed and ignorance of our government here that just kills me. With all the great people that have been going to city council meetings, Nevada Dispensary Association meetings, NORML meetings, sessions in Carson City and Reno, they have to know there are better ways of making their money and treating the people of this state with more compassion and respect. And the teachers are still threatening to strike. Where has all the money gone? I’m glad we have a state cannabis program. Everyone deserves access to clean medicine, but for fuck’s sake Nevada, let’s get this program fixed, that way you can get your precious tax dollars and the people that need to take their health back into their own hands can do so at a reasonable price! Quit making it harder. “Red Dragon” Coconut Canna-oil “Sand” 2 grams - “Red Dragon” is a cross of West Himalayan Kush and Utopian Haze, decarbed (any strain will work) 1 C. Unrefined coconut oil Combine flower, trim or kief with coconut oil and simmer on low in a sauce pot for 1 to 2 hours. Strain and cool.

GAME OF SCONES Dragon Lobster “Thermador” / “Red Dragon” coconut canna oil molecular sand While the strong women of our popular medieval series are trying to conquer the throne, this easy recipe could allow you to be the King of your neighborhood. Julia Child was not a chef. A chef is a manager of a kitchen and although she never “managed” a kitchen, she was one of the world’s greatest T.V. personalities, authors and certified culinary educators of our time. Any time I research French cuisine, I check with her because she took amazing notes from her predecessors. Her Lobster Thermidor is a classic French dish that is simply steamed lobster taken out of the shell, sautéed with a dijon cream, put back in the shell and topped with breadcrumbs or crumbled scones. We added molecular sand so the lobster looks like it’s on a beach.

Molecular Gastronomy is a popular trend that breaks down food to the molecular level. Seaweed powders are used to bind liquids, powders like xanthan gum, agar agar and starch powders are used to thicken sauces instead of traditional roux, etc. 1C. Tapioca starch (in this recipe we are using maltodextrin in the form of tapioca starch, very inexpensive in most Asian markets). ¼ C. “Red Dragon” Coconut canna oil ¼ C. Furikake (Japanese soup seasoning, also found in most Asian markets, adds flavor and represents the debris in beach sand) Combine all ingredients to look like wet sand, place underneath lobster and devour!
