TCM ADULT USE IS HERE As of July 1st, adults 21 years of age and older are able to walk in and legally purchase cannabis from local dispensaries. In opening up dispensaries for adult-use, their are a number of things to be mindful of. Parents, please remember to keep all cannabis and cannabis products away from children. In my opinion, this warning should be a given. After all, as a parent, you wouldn’t leave dangerous pharmaceuticals or alcohol lying around for a child to potentially ingest so why would you do that with cannabis? Needless to say, some people need to be reminded - keep your cannabis in a locked container, away from children! DUI laws pertain to cannabis just as they do for alcohol. Most of us are aware that cannabis can potentially impair judgement. So, be safe and do not consume cannabis and then operate a vehicle. For those of you that are newbies or those of you that consumed cannabis back in the 60s and 70s, please understand that the THC levels of some flower and of most concentrates is much higher than it was back then. Start with some lower level products and microdose until you are comfortable with how you are feeling. Edibles could take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in. Again, start slow with about 5-10mg of THC and wait for an hour or two before consuming more. If you happen to ingest too much and do not like the way you are feeling, try to find a quiet area and lie down or sleep until the effect wears off. Our dispensaries have quite a variety of products available including flower, concentrates, oils, vape cartridges, topical creams and capsules as well as a wide variety of CBD only products which have tremendous health benefits. When purchasing, you will be assisted by a budtender who can answer your questions and help you find the products you are looking for. While you may walk in under the assumption that you are a recreational consumer, many of you will leave understanding that you are in fact a medical cannabis consumer who is looking to relieve stress, be less anxious, relax, sleep or simply unwind at the end of a long day. Have an awesome month, be a safe and responsible cannabis consumer, and check out our local dispensaries. CORRECTIONS: In the June 2017 issue, the cannabinoid & terpene content for the HOPE Calm Hybrid Vape Oil was incorrectly stated. The correct amounts are: THC 84.55%, Limonene 33.1mg/g, Pinene (a+b) 10.2 mg/g and Myrcene 7.54mg/g. Also, the author of the article entitled Cannabigerol was Heath Timmons.

rista Whitley likes solving problems. More than 44 million tourists are set to pass through Las Vegas in the next year, and there’s no real plan to cater to all their cannabis retail needs. That’s a problem she knew needed a quick solution.
Her latest venture in Las Vegas’ booming legal cannabis market is called The Weekend Box - and it’s exactly what it sounds like. Krista has made unlikely collaborators out of Nevada’s top cannabis companies, creating a box of goods that can easily be picked up by tourists to make their Vegas trip truly top shelf. From the branded products and coupons within the box, to the growing list of dispensaries where it can be picked up, the product is a testament to the cannabis community joining together for the common good. “I see it as a win-win-win situation,” said Whitley about her creation. And with the first round of boxes already well sold out and available for pickup in early July, it looks like others may seriously agree. The winding journey of a serial entrepreneur eventually led Whitley, like many others, to the cannabis industry. Rich with growth potential and opportunities to help people, it seemed the perfect fit for a woman who had already won awards for her fast-growth business ventures and been called “the real deal” by none other than Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary. Krista leads the Las Vegas cannabis community through marketing savvy and direct in-person engagement. She created and moderates the Las Vegas Medical Marijuana Association's monthly panel, “Millennials in Marijuana.” This year she also stepped up to the plate to be the Las Vegas Market Leader for national networking organization Women Grow.
12
Her pride and joy, a full-service digital marketing agency named Social Media Unicorn, has a multi-state footprint and handles high profile clients along the lines of MERRY JANE, Tahoe Hydroponics, Manna Molecular Science and the latest, Caviar Gold. The agency was founded in 2014, on the cusp of Nevada’s involvement with medical cannabis. Just two years later, Nevada voters elected to allow adult recreational use as well. The agency is now in prime position to be the online engine for cannabis empires that are now rapidly expanding into the state. In running her agency and various business ventures, Krista has encountered, counseled and built internet hype for dozens of cannabis entrepreneurs. She obviously knows a thing or two about what makes each type of business tick - and how leadership affects the brand vision and bottom line. We asked her to break it down: What are the most essential traits for a business owner to have in this exciting yet cutthroat era of marijuana marketing?
ADAPTABILITY
You can't always control what’s happening around you, but you can absolutely control your reaction. Nevada is arguably the most regulated cannabis ecosystem in the world today, but instead of viewing that as a negative, I see it as an opportunity to work

THE LATEST with regulators, making sure that everyone in the cannabis community has a safe experience. Every cannabis industry leader is vested in all cannabis consumers having positive experiences. We don't want one-time party consumers, but to win the hearts and minds of the cannabis curious tourists experiencing regulated cannabis for the first time. We don't do that by "wrecking them," but by exposing them to the wellness aspects of whole-plant medicine.
KILLE PACKAGING DESIGN
“THE WORLD NEEDS MORE PEOPLE DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST.” -KRISTA WHITLEY OPTIMISM
When I started The Weekend Box, I went to all of the brands in the industry, assuming they’d be thrilled with an order of 10,000 units. The vast majority saw the opportunity, but there were a few who saw that level of volume as a burden and only had objections. Neither approach to business is right or wrong, they are just different. I am an incurable optimist and I believe that we will go farther together than alone. Nevada’s cannabis community has an opportunity to be the shining example of what regulated cannabis can be worldwide someday.
ENTHUSIASM
There’s one thing that I can do better than anyone else: fail. All the best leaders in their field fail faster and harder than anyone else. I believe my ability to work faster than anyone else, to achieve more in less time, and to optimize unique opportunities is a direct result of all of my failures. I am so laser-focused on the goal, that when someone says no or someone has objections, I fall down, but I never stay down for long and I'm always back up in short order. I wish more leaders shared their stories of failure. It's too easy for aspiring leaders to compare themselves to the highlight reel of these "overnight successes." I can out-fail anyone, but it's those priceless lessons from failure that made me a smarter, savvier leader today. An endorsement from powerhouse cannabis investment guru Leslie Bocskor, President of Electrum Partners, is the figurative icing on the colorful unicorn cake that is Krista’s career. “She defines the best of what an entrepreneur is and should embody: character, effectiveness, leadership, courage, adaptability and agility,” he said. “One day we will look back at those that have become the titans of this emerging industry, and Krista will be there.”

MIKE BRUNSON
THE MIDAS TOUCH LEGENDS ARE OFTEN BORN IN HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
Standout entrepreneurs like Caviar Gold’s Mike Brunson provide our industry with motivational stories that not only celebrate how far our community has come, but also pay tribute to the struggles of the past. Our industry, and the business world in general, loves a good underdog story. Caviar Gold represents that in the fullest. Mike Brunson never dreamed that he would be a cannabis CEO with his own swanky recording studio headquarters. Prior to legalization, he was a regular guy in Oklahoma, who in spite of not finishing junior high school, had built his own success as the owner of hardwood flooring distribution and retail companies. An eye for a great deal and a penchant for people skills and collaboration was all it took for everything he touched to start turning gold. “Once, a client came to me looking for an unheard-of deal on a particular type of flooring. After much searching I found it but instead of selling it to him I proposed that we go into business together,” reminisced Mike about one of his many collaborations. “This is someone I barely knew and within weeks we were partnered up and making money together.” As he nailed down more successful ventures, he was always looking for the
16
next opportunity. Though he had been a longtime consumer, Mike’s cannabis entrepreneurship pipe dream didn’t become a reality until around 2010. On his honeymoon, he and his wife had watched on TV as news channels announced the release of a new Justice Department memo. It stated that the Obama administration would take a neutral position on enforcing federal laws in medical marijuana legalized states. With that, Mike Brunson moved his family to Colorado and began on a series of industry misadventures that would eventually lead to the creation of his famous product: Caviar Gold premium oil-infused cannabis. If you haven’t heard of Caviar Gold brand by now, you likely will soon. The company currently sells in three states, with plans to license and distribute in 30 states by next year. Mike will settle for nothing less than a national takeover and household name recognition. That means that the Caviar Gold name will continue to be on the lips of famous rappers as the luscious concentrated nugs and flavored prerolled joints start taking over the nation, and next, the world - starting with Jamaica and Spain.
The idea of Caviar Gold has been imitated by many over the past few years, especially in the hip-hop scene where customers mostly prefer a premium look and a potent dosage. However, Mike considers his infused nug the original, and for good reason. He invented it with his own hands while attempting to fix a huge problem at one of his first dispensary stores: a 30-pound delivery of White Widow flower that ended up testing at a grand total of about 1% THC. For all intents and purposes, this cannabis was useless. Desperate to get some type of value out of this failed transaction, Mike began teaching himself to make hash oil with alcohol solvent, hoping he’d be able to re-infuse his bunk weed with the significantly more potent oil. That’s when he figured out the art and science of extraction and infusion processes, and sparked the idea that he might actually be onto something with his hash-dipped buds. Though he started out with trash bud, Mike soon implemented a strict policy of using only the highest quality flower in his creations. Caviar Gold uses ultra-premium indoor flower, while Caviar Silver is based on the same quality sun-grown flower. Momentum picked up quickly and the super popular product became a pop culture icon in its own right. By the time

legalization began to sweep other states, the Caviar Gold brand of products was poised to be successful in literally any market. With 15 states currently writing their own regulations to add to the growing list of legal markets, Mike is now poised to license his brand literally anywhere marijuana is legal. His empire is a well-oiled cannabis production machine. He oversees the brand at large, and his licensees’ access to top-of-the-line extraction machinery, and the entire Caviar Gold venture produces more than 400,000 sticky and delicious Cavi Cone, joints every single month for the past four years. Community service lies at the heart of everything the Caviar Gold brand does, though like anything else in the industry, side-stepping regulations is the name of the game. For example, some states do not allow medical cannabis to be simply given away, even to patients in serious need. This is true of both Washington state and Nevada. The company donates a significant percentage of revenue to the Cancer Association of America, but typically they prefer to
dive a little deeper by sponsoring the needs of the least fortunate medical cannabis patients in the communities they serve. Mike estimates that Caviar Gold has donated more than 480 million milligrams of THC to individuals in need of medicine. Mike Brunson’s education may not be traditional, but it spans all areas of the cannabis industry, helping others find their way as collaborators or members of the Caviar Gold team. The single biggest educating moment of Mike’s career? “When I realized that cannabis is really medicine. As the Caviar Gold trend began to spread, I started seeing it help people firsthand - that’s when I knew I was onto something much bigger than myself or my company. What we offer isn’t a product; it’s medicine, and a lifestyle for the people who need it.”

>>> CLONING CANNABIS
t
here is a great deal of mystery around the asexual propagation of cannabis via cloning in regards to “genetic degradation”. Part of the problem is that the language we use to describe this phenomenon is neither clear nor consistent. Another part is the lack of University level research on cannabis in general. But the most important part probably involves a relatively new field of science called Epigenetics.
Epigenetics appears to explain how nurture affects nature. It is now clear that the genes DNA encodes can be switched on or off, both in plants and humans. This revolutionary genetic concept means that DNA, in both plants and humans, is encoded not only with different genes to respond differently to different situations, but tagged with methyl groups so as not to be expressed but still copied and transmitted to future generations. Like plans B, C and D. For instance, even with widely used commercial strains like Sour Diesel there are different, but still high-performing phenotypes or “cuts”. Within this group there are usually still certain cuts of it that will radically underperform in every desirable category. Some perspective as to why this happens at all may be in order. In order to survive into the next generation a cannabis plant does not need to produce an abundance of resin glands, exotic purple colors, rich fragrances, or the dense, high-yielding inflorescence growth that consumers will pay top dollar for. She only needs to produce a single seed and is very capable of doing this in the absence of a male. Let her experience some stress and watch how quickly she responds in this manner. Stress is the beginning of this process for most varieties.
BY ROBYN PIERCE, HORTICULTURE DEPT, OAKSTERDAM UNIVERSITY
25 years. At least on the West Coast mother plants are usually kept no longer than a year or so, in part because it's simply not practical. Which method is better for producing clones of the higher quality is not clear. That in most places in the world it is not possible to maintain a mother plant is clear. Instead, most people have and continue to use seeds. This the traditional way to maintain genetic lines for many good reasons. The problem with them is that the very specific qualities commercial production demands, and the consistency that consumers expect, usually don’t exist in seed form, or at least not within the acceptable range of variation. Commercial cannabis growers should keep mother plants no longer than 4-6 months, with 4 preferred. After that, its shoot growth becomes thinner, less vigorous and less likely to root during propagation. Cuttings taken from this kind of growth, while they can perform decently when moved into a flowering cycle, more often than not retain characteristics of a plant in survival mode, leading to a poorer quality product for patients and recreational consumers. Hobby growers that maintain their own genetic lines this way are also sometimes responsible for this effect. This is how “cloning out” happens. Because the DNA is not actually damaged but expressed differently it is possible to “rejuvenate” a clone that has “cloned out” but the process is far from a science. The best way to bring a clone back too full genomic expression is probably by putting it underneath the sun outdoors or in a greenhouse and then take a cutting from that plant. Micropropagation/ tissue culture is supposed to be another way to achieve this but actual results remain elusive.
These underperforming phenos of a variety are considered to be “cloned out”. Wise growers using best practices will not so much avoid these clones as very actively seek out clones that another, reliable grower has recently had measurable success with. They know that both the quantity and quality of their dried flowers may be reduced to the point of financially breaking even or worse. They should also know that between their last flowering cycle and the next, many bad things could have happened to the mother plants that their next clones will come from. Commercial cannabis nurseries worth their salt will go to great lengths to see how their varieties are performing both in the home grower’s tent and in the cultivation’s indoor grow. This is also something that needs to be repeated on a regular basis. Much like breweries employ the microbiology depts of local Universities to maintain genetic uniformity in strains of yeast, nurseries need constant feedback on how their cuts are performing in the real world. Yet, because many of the most popular varieties exist only in the form of female cuttings, the only way they can continue to exit is by asexual propagation or extreme long life. The Dutch have kept mother plants for

THE 2017 LEGISLATIVE UPDATE Laws all pot smokers need to know The 2017 Nevada Legislature has adjourned sine die1. This was the first legislative session held since the voters of Nevada passed the Initiative to tax and regulate adult-use recreational marijuana. In this 2017 session, there were quite a few bills introduced that directly impacted recreational marijuana, some of which passed and some that did not. In this article (and concluded in next month’s article), I give an overview of the new laws that were passed, and the ones that didn’t pass, and how they affect the cannabis industry. If you are interested in reading the bills in their entirety, go to www. leg.state.nv.us/Session/79th2017. All the bills are listed on this site. I will also give the specific bill numbers discussed in this article. SB 487 is a bill that was passed and signed into law that mostly deals with issues that won’t directly affect medical marijuana patients or adult recreational marijuana users except in the bank account. This bill added a 10% tax on all recreational marijuana sales, and increased a tax from 2% to 15% on all wholesale sales for medical marijuana products, which will most likely increase the price charged to patients for that medical marijuana. The rest of the issues addressed in this bill impact more of the administration of both the medical and recreational marijuana programs. SB 344 was passed and signed into law. This bill will require both medical and adult use marijuana products to have certain labels affixed to every marijuana product sold. These labels must contain the statement “THIS IS A MEDICAL MARIJUANA PRODUCT” and “THIS IS A MEDICAL MARIJUANA PRODUCT”. Further, these labels must include the amount of THC in each package, and this law also establishes the maximum amount of THC in all edible products. Any edible marijuana product must also contain some additional information on these labels, such as “Keep out of reach of children”, a list of all of the ingredients in each edible, and a list of all allergens in each edible. In addition to the labeling requirements, this new law also makes it illegal to have any cartoon characters, mascots, action figures, balloons or toys on any of the packaging of medical or recreational marijuana. (unless such an item appears in the logo of the company) Edible marijuana products cannot be manufactured in the shape of a lollipop, animals or fruit. All edible marijuana products sold must contain a written notification that lists information regarding potential harm of ingesting too much edible marijuana, or any amount by children, in addition to other helpful information for
22
the consumer. (See SB 487 for all labeling and packaging requirements, as this article simply overviews the new laws) In addition, this new law also addresses marketing and advertising of both recreational and Medical marijuana, specifically where advertising may appear, what such advertisement can’t include and what it must include. This law is focused on keeping all marijuana products from appealing to children through labeling, marketing and advertising. AB 422 changes the existing law as it relates to a few different areas of medical marijuana. The cost for a first time applicant for a medical marijuana card is now $75 instead of $100, and for renewing cardholders, the cost is now no more than $50, reduced from $75. Medical Marijuana Cards used to be renewed every year. The new law now leaves it up to a person’s health care provider if the card should be renewed ever year or every 2 years. The Nevada State Department of Taxation is now the State agency charged with administering the medical marijuana program. Further, medical marijuana dispensaries are no longer responsible for tracking the amount of marijuana each patient is purchasing. Instead, the new law states that dispensaries are not allowed to sell more than 1 ounce of marijuana per transaction. The limits of possession for medical marijuana patients still remain the same, it is just no longer the dispensaries responsibility to police their patients. In next month’s article, I will complete the Legislative Update, or “Laws All Pot Smokers Need to Know, Part II”. 1. Sine Die is just a fancy Latin term the Legislature uses when they officially end their sessions every two years. If you are interested, the literal Latin definition is “without a day”.

TERPENES Could Turn Your Ship Around
thought there was no end to the phytocannabinoid pharmacological revelations from a highly effective pain management alternative to a non-toxic anti-cancer remedy of cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the two powerhouse cannabinoids respectively. However, the phytotherapeutic story is shifting to what will be a dramatic ascendency of terpenes and their therapeutic impact either individually or in concert with THC and/or CBD. Terpenes heretofore have been used predominantly as flavorings and fragrances common in our diet, and are considered GRAS compounds by the US Federal and Drug Administration and have no controlled substance restrictions associated with phytocannabinoids.
It turns out that terpenes are affecting us much more than we might think. As examples: limonene is a strong anxiolytic, is active against bacteria associated with acne1 and can induce the suicide of cancer cells2 , β-caryophyllene is a non psychoactive antiinflammatory via CB2 binding3 , β-myrcene is a sedating muscle relaxant anti-inflammatory4 , and α-pinene, the most abundant terpene among all plants is an antimicrobial and more importantly acts as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor which may aid in memory loss associated with several human neurological diseases.5 The rising eminence of terpenes couldn’t be coming at a better time for the cannabis industry that needs a strategy for demarcating medical marijuana from recreational marijuana. Today, terpenes constitute the medicinal subtlety of the entourage effect that we all keep hearing about. That said, I will buy a mulligan as I suspect there are more biopharmaceutical messengers yet to be revealed by this most extraordinary plant, cannabis sativa L. Few cannabis complicit states even require testing and reporting of terpenes. Most cannabis consumers remain in the dark about
the importance of terpenes. I am happy to write that the State of Nevada was the first state to have the foresight to require reporting of 11 terpenes as a component of potency. Unfortunately, many cannabis extract producers are unaware that their procedures are basically throwing away the terpenes to the atmosphere rather than bringing them along with the two powerhouses, THC and CBD, that remain the coveted measure of wholesale valuation. Clearly, retaining the entire terpene complement going forward appears to be worth the effort during cannabis extraction. Not surprisingly, it was Ethan Russo’s review article in 2011 that portended the current therapeutic extent of cannabis-derived terpenes on human health and behavior.6 Remarkably, terpenes are potent even when inhaled in ambient air and can subsequently be detected at quantifiable levels in your serum. Terpenes and cannabinoids (also chemically known as phenolic terpenes), share a common biochemical precursor, geranyl pyrophosphate and over 10,000 terpenes have been identified, albeit their biochemical and genetic pathways are not completely resolved. Another consequence of the focused spotlight on THC and CBD. Terpenes act remarkably in concert with phytocannabinoids and in particular to diminish the intoxicating effects of THC. From the MMJ side of the industry, if the intoxicating effect of THC can be controlled, reduced or eliminated while maintaining its therapeutic merits, the application of cannabis derived products could be expanded dramatically.7 Terpenes can make up to 10% of trichome content but are subject to loss from processing and subsequent drying and storage. Terpenes come in different formats with the three monoterpenes, limonene, α-pinene and β-myrcene dominating, followed by sesquiterpenes, like β-caryophyllene and α-humulene. Importantly, just like cannabinoids, terpene synthesis is under genetic control.8

From a pharmacological standpoint, terpenes are highly evolved lipophilic molecules that can interact with other lipophilic structures like membranes and the many embedded receptors that reside there, resulting in neurological responses, the detection of odors, downstream enzymatic changes or acting as a THC antidote. Terpenes’ lipophilic (hydrophobic) nature also gives them the unique ability to permeate skin. Remarkably, the use of terpenes as facilitating permeants in topical formulations not involving cannabinoids was reported 13 years ago. 9,10 Topically applied drugs must somehow permeate the stratum corneum or the outermost layer of epidermis, layers of dead cells embedded in a lipid matrix. Topicals passing through the stratum corneum must either move into cells (intracellularly) or move between cells (intercellularly) and the lipophilicity of the compound formulation is key. Cornwell et al. found that formulations with high levels of specific terpenes could increase permeation by up to a 1,000-fold with the intracellular concentration of limonene, cineole and nerolidol reaching 40-60% of the tissue treated with neat terpenes. 11 Plants are clearly better remedies than the extracts made from them and stand apart from the empty promise of modern pharmaceuticals. Going forward, more attention needs to be focused on the contribution of terpenes both individually and in combination with phytocannabinoids.

BUSINESS INSURANCE
W
elcome to part two of the three-part article on insurance and the marijuana industry. As mentioned in the previous article, the approved classes for marijuana business insurance are: cultivators (indoor, greenhouse and outdoor operations), manufacturers of goods and equipment, wholesalers and brokers, retail operations, laboratories, property managers, landlords, schools, and transportation and delivery. There are several different types of business insurance but for most businesses, it always starts with your general liability policy. General liability insurance is priced mainly by 3 factors, square footage of your operation, payroll and gross receipts. Yes, how much you make is a determining factor in your general liability quote. Now, in speaking with many people when I get to this topic I sometimes get “this conversation is over” or people just hang up on me. Welcome to legitimate business. There are two people you need to level with in regards to how much your company makes, your accountant and your insurance broker. If the numbers are not correct, then you are going to be underinsured. All of the information you give to your insurance broker is strictly confidential. Insurance companies go to great lengths to keep it that way. We, the brokers, must take approved classes on privacy, ethics and anti-money laundering every 2 years. This requirement differs from state to state, but California, Florida and New York are the stiffest. Keep in mind the reason that you need to purchase insurance - IF YOU GET WIPED OUT, YOU COULD LOSE EVERYTHING! Insurance will make you whole again, but the numbers have to be right. And, for you first time business insurance buyers, there is an audit at the end of your policy year. For example, if you estimate on your initial application that you will do 5 million in sales for the year and at the end of the year the audit finds that you did 8 million in sales, you are going to get a bill from the insurance company for the difference in premium between the 5 million and the 8 million dollar revenue amounts.
26
Also, during underwriting there will be a physical inspection of your business by an independent inspector who is hired by the insurance company to see if what we listed on the application is accurate. Why? If you put a down payment or premium payment for a few hundred dollars and then have a legitimate claim the very next day, the insurance company could be on the hook for $1,000,000. This is why your application needs to be complete
YES IT’S TRUE, YOU CAN INSURE YOUR MARIJUANA BUSINESS
and accurate. If the insurance company accepts the application they agree to cover you and pay any claims according to the contract. Yes, insurance is contract. Once issued, you can have your attorney review it if you like. And if your attorney has any problem with it you have a “review” period in which you can unwind it without penalty. If you cancel a policy mid-year it may have a cancellation charge. The audit is the same for workers’ compensation insurance. If you hire more people during the year and your payroll turns out to be more, you may get a bill. Marijuana business insurance is really not much different than insurance for other businesses. The difference now is that the underwriters (the folks that determine eligibility and pricing) know who you are, exactly what your business does and they are willing to cover you. General liability is normally the foundation for your accompanying products like product liability, crop, transportation and property. This means you would need to buy the general liability along with any other policy. There are some policies but very few that are stand-alone like some product liability. Workers’ compensation can be a stand-alone policy you can get now if you already have a general liability policy. It is important to get your insurance quoted as soon as possible. Currently, the industry is taking two weeks just to get a preliminary quote out. When it becomes mandatory it’s going to take much longer so don’t wait, get insured now! One thing you will be glad to know is that your business insurance is tax deductible in most cases. Yes, many things in a marijuana business are not deductible but your business insurance is. For additional questions regarding deductible insurance premiums, please contact Tax Defense Partners at 866-TAX DEFENSE. In closing, I just want to address the sceptics that don’t truly believe a marijuana insurance policy will pay a claim. According to Mike Aberle, Sr. Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Next Wave Insurance Services, LLC, and a true pioneer in marijuana insurance, “Claims have been paid to marijuana businesses since their inception over ten years ago.” Mike does warn however about getting the right insurance. Read the exclusions, every policy has them. They may be excluding the very thing you bought the insurance for. I hope this was informative. Look for part three of this article next month. they understand terpenes and their benefits. We need to prove to the world this can work and that we can help humanity feel better and do so safely. An educated budtender can literally change and save lives. Please be vigilant in your hiring process.
WITH ROB RUCKUS
REC IS HERE! WELCOME TO ALL THE NEW RECREATIONAL CONSUMERS! WE'VE HAD A PRETTY GOOD RUN UP UNTIL NOW. NEVADA IS GROWING SOME OF THE BEST CANNABIS AROUND. ALL THE BIGGER COMPANIES ARE FLOCKING TO GET HERE. THE BOOM IS NOW ON! BUT LET'S NOT FORGET, THE WORK HAS JUST BEGUN. DISPENSARIES: With the huge amount of people about to start buying, ALL of us in the industry NEED to step up our game. I know all the dispensaries are hiring right now. My plea to them is simple, be careful who you hire. Just because it's recreational now, doesn't mean that many of these people visiting dispensaries aren't coming in for medical help. When interviewing new employees, test them. Make sure they aren't going to give someone a product that can hurt them. Make sure
CULTIVATORS: As growers, you put so much hard work and love into your flowers, please make it easy for us budtenders to sell it. Keep up on your samples. Putting a smell jar up to somebody's face and having your FRESH product smack them in the nose makes our already hard job much easier. And that in turn sells more of your product. You keep the samples stankin', and we will keep it selling! LABS: Get these numbers uniform so we can properly tell people what's in each product and what it will do. The differences lately have EVERYONE questioning lab results! This should not be happening. Your results are what budtenders depend on when telling people what the product will do. We need you to all give us accurate numbers and inform us when reading them changes in any way. POLITICIANS: To the politicians who did the work to get us here, a begrudging THANK YOU. I know it wasn't easy, but in the end you are helping more people than you'll ever know and allowing us to help others. I know you did it for money, but still, people are getting the help they NEED and for that I (as an anti establishment, old punk rocker) have to thank you. PATIENTS: And to the patients and new recreational customers, please realize this is a whole new industry. There are going to be problems. Be vocal about them. Help us all make this process go easier. But remember you HAVE to be patient with us. If you have an issue at a dispensary, don't freak out. Take someone aside and inform them or send the facility an email. More than likely, the problem will either already be known and in the midst of getting fixed or the facility will address the issue and rectify it in a timely manner. And, keep up with your medical cards. We need to keep the medical program afloat. It's what got us here in the first place. Looking forward to finally getting to sell EVERYONE (21 and over) some kick ass Nevada cannabis LEGALLY!!!! Rob Ruckus is a Nevada medical marijuana patient, and budtender at Inyo Fine Cannabis, a long-time Las Vegas resident and cannabis activist, star of A&E's Bad Ink, musician and host of Ruckus on the Radio.

MEET YOUR BUDTENDER SAM ROBERTS BUDTENDER AT SIERRA WELLNESS CONNECTION "all medical patients are a priority when shopping with Sierra Wellness. Medical patients will always be taken to the front of the line while we operate medical and recreational from one building!"
Where are you from? I am not originally from Northern Nevada. I Moved to Reno a year ago from Maui Hawaii, and before that I lived in Flagstaff, Arizona. I moved out here for family and to pursue music.
What are your favorite strains and/ or cannabis products? My favorite strain is Lambs Bread. My favorite strain that we carry at Sierra Wellness is Sour Kush. As far as products go, I really like Mary's CBD Muscle Freeze and the Dixie 500mg Orange Chocolate Bar.
What led you to the cannabis industry? I worked in the cannabis industry in Arizona for a year prior to being hired at Sierra Wellness. My interest in cannabis and all the benefits of this wonderful plant is what originally led me to the industry.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST UNIQUE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE? One of the most unique customer experiences was when one of our patients brought in their "Pill Tower" to show us the pills they use to take prior to switching to cannabis. The tower of pills stood about 5.5 ft tall, and was 2 ft wide. To see how many pills one person was taking, and knowing that their life is now better through cannabis is one of the many reasons I love being in this industry.
What DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT WORKING AT SIERRA WELLNESS CONNECTION? I like the small company feel, and the great team of people I work with. Im excited to see where we go long term, and how we grow as a company!
WHAT CHANGES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MADE IN THE NEVADA CANNABIS INDUSTRY? I would like to see the all the cannabis dispensaries behave and act like they are part of the same community. I would like for these "medical" dispensaries to remember why they started in this industry, to help others, not to make a quick profit. I would also like to see some regulation changes, such as the nanogram limitations for DUI's and also an increase in quantity limits for transactions.
WHAT IMPACT DO YOU FEEL RECREATIONAL CANNABIS WILL HAVE ON NEVADA? I see recreational cannabis bringing lots of positive change to the local economy and culture of Nevada, both through the money collected with taxes, and also the mental and physical well being of the people. As for Reno and Vegas, I think it's going to increase tourism as well. Legal cannabis is now another reason for people to visit!

Dispensaries >>>MEDICINE REMEDY Purple Zombie Remedy Rock
So this is what all the fuss is about. I'm about to go apocalyptic and break this Purple Zombie into convenient smoke-sized pieces. Once you break it up, it's obvious that this nuggity stuff is dipped in oil, and rolled in kief. I sliced one open with a razor blade, and it looked like a geode inside. Get on over to your local recreational dispensary, and ask for some Remedy Rocks. Not everybody stocks em’ up, but everyone talks em’ up. Good ups Braly and Chris. THC- 72.8% CBD- 0.486% Caryophyllene- 3.76 mg/g Humulene- 1.585 mg/g
GT Flowers Phatt Fruity Preroll
Preroll introductions are always the most difficult items to analyze and elaborate on, because you only get one shot, do not, miss your chance to blow, cuz opportunity comes once in a lifetime, yo. So I gotta lose myself in the moment, At this moment, you should be with us, feeling like we do. GT does a spectacular job of growing, harvesting, and packaging these little bad boys. These RAW Cones are packed tightly with 100% cannabis flower, and no bullshit trim. THC- 24.15% CBGA- 0.831 mg/g Limonene- 9.69 mg/g Myrcene- 5.2 mg/g Caryophyllene- 3.12 mg/g Pinene (a+b)- 2.61 mg/g
CBN- 0.395% Linalool- 2.086 mg/g
OMC Sugar Cookies Rosin Rockets
What we have here is similar but not the same. Rosin Rockets are the strongest in the game, they use nothing but top shelf flowers mixed with solventless rosin, packed tightly in a cone. OMC Rosin Rockets come 2 to a pack, and one is more than any one person really needs. They're capable of sending you to the moon, so watch it! Don't come crying to me when you're all lit up, slobbering and shit cuz you smoked both rockets. Smoke one and keep one in one of your pockets. They don't taste like chicken, no matter how you fry em’ up.

KABUNKY Klear Acapulco Gold KABUNKY Casey Jones Rosin
Yep, this is it. Make no mistake about it. This is the best-looking, best-smelling, best-tasting shit introduced this month. I’m wearing a ten gallon cowboy hat with the name Giddy Up embroidered on the front. I'd like to tip this here hat and fill it up with extracts? I can't seem to peel my face from the jar, despite the lack of actual magnetism. This is another high-caryophyllene moment that will act as an anti-anxiolytic medicine. THC- 71.1% Caryophyllene- 10.9 mg/g Humulene- 5.0 mg/g Terpinolene- 2.6 mg/g
PURE TONIC Orange Julius Shatter
This was the last product that came across the room and I couldn't wait to try it. Look at the terpenoids. Shit, myrcene is nearly 2% here. I already know how I'm going to feel, couchheavy, pain-free, and starving. Light up the rig inside my case. Speaking of a cases, I'm gonna get down with OJ like I'm his accomplice. Yo, we’re gonna take a stab at this Orange Julius. Take a “stab at it?” He thinks he's funny, speakin in the second person. I’m thinking in the third person.
We have a 1:1 CBD:THC ratio and zero terpenes. You have to sacrifice something to isolate something else. In this case, the cannabinoids are an impressive 82%. I got crazy high from this product, and I love mixing it with other concentrates like CBD Crystalline which has flavor, but not much of a psychedelic effect. Yin and yang, cause and effect. We always enjoy what the Kabunky production facility turns out. It keeps you runnin! Yeah, it keeps you runnin. Keep your meds put away. You don't need any run ins with the man. THC - 33% CBD - 49%
THC- 77.45 mg/g Pinene (a+b)- 7.63 mg/g Myrcene- 19.88 mg/g Humulene- 4.03 mg/g Bisabolol- 3.44 mg/g CBD - 49%
CW SCARLET OILWORKS Grizzly Dragon Distillate
Ya, buddy! This is the way I like to get down with distillates. No need to sip on it like a vape tank. Dip your honey pot tool into the goopy, golden Grizzly Dragon Sap, and reward yourself with some top shelf dabs. Most distillates don't taste nearly this good. I have been diggin’ the CW Scarlet Oilworks distillates. Right now you can find them at all 3 Canopi Dispensaries. Grizzly Adams approves. THC- 83.287% CBD- 0.479% a-Pinene- 0.62 mg/g Limonene- 0.53 mg/g Myrcene- 0.35 mg/g
CW SCARLET OILWORKS Blue Dream Distillate
What was that whole “anti-Blue Dream” campaign all about? This Blue Dream Distillate is my favorite among the 3 distillates introduced this month by Scarlet Oilworks. The flavor is on point, and the THC content hits your head like “POW”. The amount of pinene in this oil will definitely help those with difficulty breathing. Ingesting this distillate on a regular basis would work cellularly on a more permanent level than dabbing. Ask an expert for advice with terpenes and cannabinoids. THC- 91.331% a-Pinene- 4.06 mg/g b-Pinene- 1.31 mg/g

KABUNKY Grape Stomper Rosin
Mix it up. This is the second time around for this multi-strain hash. Many terps showed up on the lab results, most of them landing around 3-4 mg/g each. I'm attracted to the pinene content in this product. Pinene is a bronchodilator, helping your respiratory system open up and breathe. Don't be a fruitcake, instead make one with some hash in it and ingest some cannabis today. Expect to get “Stoned As Fuck if you mess with this Sasquatch. THC- 76.1% Limonene- 3.7 mg/g Pinene (a+b)- 3.6 mg/g Caryophyllene- 3/1 mg/g Linalool- 1.1 mg/g
MEDIZIN Star Dawg Shatter
So damned smooth. This creamy, anytime lung-dessert is jam-packed with THC, and even has 27mg of CBD per gram. This puck went straight to the dab rig after the photo shoot. I really enjoy unwrapping the little Kabunky packages, especially when the reward is wrapping my lens and lungs around a sexy little solventless rosin puck. Shucks, that's all the time we have. I'm locking myself in the Smoke Dungeon with this lovely hash. My head and lungs love you Kabunky! Spread the love to Giddy, and rub that lucky mohawk for me. THC- 77.6% CBD- 2.7% Myrcene- 2.8 mg/g Linalool- 1.5 mg/g Caryophyllene- 1.4 mg/g
Medizin continues to roll out bomb shatter. They are arguably the best value in Vegas. $20 full grams of fire shatter is tough to beat. This hash tastes nice and sweet. That's why they're busy busy busy filling up their lobby with patients, filling up their exit bags with fire, and filling up their lungs with happiness. Star Dawg tastes fresh and hoppy, and should help settle nerves and stress. So don't trip, hop in your whip and cruise that ship yonder to Medizin, and get you some rips, Skippy. You will feel FREE & EASY about it. But don't sink your ships, loosen up the hips, and not those slippery lips. Get it in your fingertips. CW SCARLET OILWORKS Sour Diesel Distillate
Another delicious distillate for Nevada patients to heal with. Even though medical cannabis is turning recreationally legal this month, we will still point consumers in a medical direction. There will be quite a few people to send to Dab School, and from now on, I can show anyone over 21 what's up. I won't need to verify if someone is a medical patient before putting a dab in their lungs. I'll just need to make sure they are 21. Shits about to get fun. Drive this Sour Diesel Distillate in the fast lane. No medical card needed. This oil shouldn't make you tired, so hit it in the morning with coffee. THC- 88.8% Myrcene- 1.52 mg/g

IVXX has collaborated a few more shatters to lay on these lungs. Moxie is killing the hash game. No one can even keep up with their new flavors, and What's New With Moxie. It sure is fun trying though. I get to smash up the hash in these jars, which also keeps me out of the bars, driving drunk and crashing up cars. I'd rather cruise this Purple Diesel all the way to Mars. THC- 79.83% CBN- 3.51% Myrcene- 51.38 mg/g Caryophyllene- 22.32 mg/g Limonene- 10.235 mg/g Humulene- 9.084 mg/g Linalool- 7.043 mg/g
Calm down and hit this shit hard. Don't be too apprehensive. It's gonna calm your shit down, whether you need to relax or not. I enjoyed the taste of this bad boy as well. This vape tank has a unique silicone sleeve that slips on and off your tank to preserve personal hygiene. I might pop open the back of the tank and dump this distillate into my dab rig. Where there's a William, there's a way. You know what's cool. From now on nobody's gonna tell me that I'm too rec for them. Time to push these envelopes and take the lid off of Nevada. REMEDY King Tut OG
THC- 21.1% Myrcene- 6.4 mg/g Limonene- 3.9 mg/g Bisabolol- 3.45 mg/g
THC- 25.57%
I could blaze on this for days. My eyes are glazed, and I'm fuckin amazed by this Princess Haze. Am I going through a phase? Or just reaching for a phrase? I dropped you off in left field, where the cows graze. My money plays for days and days. Hit this Purple Princess Haze, and enjoy a head-change that stays. This strain is a ballin’. Money Plays.
Taking the name from one of the most famous Egyptian mummies, Remedy created King Tut in honor of his lustrous name. You'll be singin’ Egyptian lover, once you smell this. You might even break out the cardboard and start breakdancing. I love a gassy OG, and this is the petroleum I like to fill my tank with. Piney and fresh, call on King Tut to slow down your day!
TIKUN Alaska
Man, I'm high as shit! I twisted up this Alaska without first reading the lab results. Shit, I thought it was a CBD strain. Haha, that's what I get for assuming. Alaska smells and tastes sweet and fruity. It's a sativa-heavy hybrid with certain indica qualities, like myrcene hitting the head just right. Not too heavy, not too light. Sometimes, in Alaska, there is no night, no moon to tuck you in tight. Roll up another Tikun joint, I might. This shit’s out of sight! THC- 17.608% a-Pinene- 3.412 mg/g Myrcene- 2.452 mg/g b-Pinene- 1.572 mg/g

REMEDY Outer Space
Spacey is right. My head feels light and my personal forecast is rainbow bright, with light drizzles expected all day. This is the way I want to feel today, and tomorrow and the day after, and so on. And so from now on, expect my head to be in Outer Space, cuz that's the strain that just slapped my brain, -an’ I ain't complaining’. It's pretty cognitive. I'm hyped up and feel like doing something. It's nice in Outer Space, man. I might just stay a while. Let's break up another pile, roll up another joint, and break out another smile. THC- 26.97%
CW REAL SUN GROWN Golden Goat
Damn! These buds are so frosty, they look like they were rolled in kief. Golden Goat by CW Nevada is an attractive lady. She smells fruity and screams SATIVA, igniting a fire under my ass, and delivering a burst of energy similar to an energy drink. It's perfect for the morning, or to extend an evening. This herb will spark creativity, and bring out the playful kid in you. Don't fight it. Go with the flow. Entertain your mind. No complaining. I don't mind entertaining. I got the Golden Goat. PRODUCTS REDWOOD Sugar Cookies
This is a must-try flower. We actually opened all three jars, and this one was just begging to get smoked. I always take my own photos, so I'm obligated to archive a clean photo of each item before it gets touched up by our hungry lungs. Go ahead and leave me stranded on a deserted island with an endless supply of coconut milk and Sugar Cookies and I'll be just fine. I could smoke this bomb flower every day. So lovely gentlemen. Sophisticated, and seasoned. THC- 25.817% CBGA- 1.39% Caryophyllene- 2.559 mg/g Limonene- 1.4 mg/g Myrcene- 1.397 mg/g
REDWOOD Cannalope Kush
Redwood just keeps bangin’ out the hits. Last month, we introduced some outstanding, unique strains, new to Nevada. This month it's no different. Here we have Cannalope Kush that smells like sweet melon, and leaves your head clear and your body feeling rejuvenated. Have a victory joint and smile about marijuana being legalized in Nevada. The new state flower should be in cannabis form, why not Cannalope Kush? It's a Sativa hybrid, so it shouldn't slow you down much. Nice melons, Redwood. Lookin good! THC- 24.64% CBGA- 1.359% Limonene- 3.5 mg/g Caryophyllene- 2.453 mg/g Linalool- 2.115 mg/g Pinene (a+b)- 1.685 mg/g
REMEDY Lemon Kush
REMEDY Deadhead OG
THC- 27.72%
THC- 29.92%
My entire eighth was one single nug. It looked like it was even fatter, but I figure they hacked it to get it into the jar. Sweet lemon citrus, mixed with a vigorous OG, you get the best of both worlds here. Lemon Kush will lighten your head, and get you off your ass. A couple of fat rips from the bong, and you'll be fired up and ready for anything. This strain can calm nerves and help with tension headaches. We have seen so many bomb phenotypes come out of the Remedy cultivation. This one is no slacker at over 27% THC, get ahold of these trees.
REDWOOD SFV OG
If you like to smoke gassy kush, this is your shit. Break up this stanky herb, and roll up a fatty. This is the way to reward yourself for kicking ass today. No need to stop at the bar. What you need is right here in this jar. Cigarettes are nasty, don't smoke tar. With a low myrcene content, I didn't expect to get so lazy and stoned. It is over 25% THC, so I figured I'd get lit, but without the couchlock. I underestimated the power of this SVF OG. This is a good strain for sleep and recovery. THC- 25.313% CBGA- 1.073% Limonene- 2.3 mg/g Myrcene- 1.829 mg/g Caryophyllene- 1.414 mg/g Linalool- 1.41 mg/g
These tight, light green nugs are now 100% legal drugs. LEGAL… It’s the same, now as prostitution, gambling, and liquor. I'm not here to bicker, but it kinda stunk that you could pull out your junk, but not a joint. What's the point of that? Nevadans need cannabis, and this 30% THC Deadhead OG is now available for anyone over 21 who wants to get down with it. Remedy has an extremely consistent product line. All of their buds are fresh and dense, but Deadhead OG is super dense and finished well. You will enjoy this full flavored OG. You heard it first from me.

>>>TERPENES TIKUN Avidekel Tincture
There isn't much THC in this bottle, so don't worry about getting inebriated and blaming Tikun. This tincture is infused with CBD as well. In fact, this tincture is around 10:1 CBD:THC. The sugary reduction coated the back of my throat for about an hour. I never felt anything, but I do know that when cannabinoids are ingested, that this magical plant’s compounds work on a cellular level, moving out bad cells, and reproducing the good ones. Cancer (simply put) reproduces bad cells. Cannabis does not kill brain cells. Quite the contrary, marijuana helps with neurogenic development. Re-educate the misinformed. Exercise your mind. You're way behind, and you think everything is fine. HaHa. Better take your tincture. FUCK CANCER!
TIKUN Midnight Tincture
For someone who doesn't smoke that much weed, this product could be all you need for a sleep aid. It's a 1:1 - CBD:THC, so you get an equal amount of the top 2 cannabinoids, cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol. This is a medical grade cannabis tincture that will work on a cellular level. It tastes favorable, but even if it didn't, I'd plug my nose and take my medicine. Ingesting this Midnight Tincture should ignite the CB receptors which are mostly located in our brain and immune system. Total CBD- 239.709 mg Total THC- 208.203 mg 30 Servings p/bottle

They bring their experience and expertise to Vegas with a Mint Chocolate Tincture for everyday use. The Stanley Brothers have a hemp farm right in the heart of Boulder, CO, and ONLY use organic and healthy ingredients in their tinctures. I say this all the time… ingesting extracted cannabis oil is the most effective way for cannabis to actually help someone that needs it as a medicine. Drink up! It surely doesn't taste like medicine, and won't make your head a-spin. It's non-psychoactive, so don't go psycho on us like a typical, hypocritical, conservative, alcoholic. Total CBD- 1100 mg

Sour Jones
Right on! Dream Steam offers an extra large vape cartridge, so needless to say, it should last longer than the 500ml tanks. This distillate tastes good too, with the right amount of terpenes reintroduced at the end of the process. For me, vape cartridges are not a substitute for vaporizing concentrates in a dab rig, but they are a great filler and they don't offend many people. Shit, half the people don't even know what you're doing. So maintain that competitive advantage and sip on Dream Steam Sour Jones all day. It's your life. Do things your way. Yeah! It's time to introduce some natural medicine.. Honey is a beneficial sugar that also acts as a salve, and helps eliminate toxins, thus repairing our cells. Add cannabidiol to the mix, and now we just activated our cannabinoid system, and lit up our CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are found throughout the body but primarily in the brain and immune system. A Beginner's Guide to >>>
LEGAL CANNABIS
O
n July 1st, Nevada will become the fifth state to allow legal adult-use cannabis sales. This means adults over the age of 21 can legally purchase cannabis products from state-licensed dispensaries without a medical card or physician’s recommendation. While more than 60% of Americans live in a state with some form of legalized cannabis, the experience of legally-purchasing products at a dispensary will be a new one for many non-patient cannabis consumers and Las Vegas visitors. The following guide is intended to provide new consumers with tips and things to consider before heading to the dispensary. WHAT IS NOW LEGAL? Adults 21 years of age and older can legally purchase up to one ounce of cannabis flower (28g) or up to one-eighth of an ounce (3.5g) of cannabis concentrates from a state-license dispensary. Consumption is only allowed in private residences. WHAT REMAINS ILLEGAL? Public consumption of cannabis remains illegal and can result in a $600 fine. Driving under the influence is also illegal and could result in a fine, loss of license, community service, and jail time. WHERE CAN I LEGALLY PURCHASE CANNABIS PRODUCTS? All legal sales will take place in state-licensed dispensaries. Keep in mind, all cannabis sales are cash-only transactions. WHAT TYPE OF PRODUCT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? Las Vegas dispensary menus include numerous different strains of cannabis flower that can be smoked or vaped, cannabis concentrates that can be consumed via special water pipes called dab rigs or discrete vaporization pens, cannabis oils that can be put into vaporizer cartridges, cannabis infused topicals, tinctures, and edibles. When selecting a product, the consumer should consider how they would like to consume their cannabis, what product they feel comfortable with, and where they will be consuming this product (some methods of consumption are more discrete than others). WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING DURING AND AFTER CANNABIS CONSUMPTION? Different strains produce different effects so it is important to consider where the consumer will be and what they will be doing during the experience. For example, certain strains can produce powerful sedative effects so they would not be recommended during the daytime. Likewise, some strains can produce a cerebral, energetic high so they would not be recommended prior to bedtime.

BY DARRYL JOHNSON, PHD : ACE ANALYTICAL LABORATORY
WHAT FLOWERS OR PRODUCTS ARE AROMATICALLY AND VISUALLY APPEALING? The cannabis plant produces a beautiful flower that contains more than 140 different terpenes, the compounds responsible for flavors and scents. Any reputable dispensary will have display jars available to allow the consumer to smell and visually inspect the flower. Different concentrations of terpenes will dramatically affect the scent of a strain and will impact the effects experienced by the user. Consumers are strongly encouraged to smell numerous products to determine what flavors and scents they find most stimulating and appealing.
*During this process, it is also important to be courteous when it comes to smelling products and the time spent in a dispensary. All display jars and products are kept behind a counter so each customer will be assisted by a budtender. With hundreds to thousands of patrons expected each day at local Las Vegas dispensaries, it is important to remember to be considerate of your budtender’s time and other patrons.
DO ADULT-USE CANNABIS PRODUCTS UNDERGO LABORATORY SAFETY TESTING? Testing of adult-use cannabis is identical to Nevada’s medical marijuana program, with all cannabis products undergoing the country’s most stringent safety and potency testing requirements prior to sale. All cannabis products are screened for microbiological contamination, pesticide/fungicide/ growth regulator residual levels, heavy metal contamination, residual solvent levels (hydrocarbon solvent extracts only), and mycotoxin levels. In addition, concentrations of five cannabinoids and ten terpenes are measured for every sample. WHAT ARE CANNABINOIDS AND TERPENES? Cannabinoids are compounds found in cannabis that interact with cannabinoid receptors producing the psychoactive and medicinal effects associated with cannabis use. There are 80-120 different cannabinoids found in cannabis including delta-9-THC (Δ9-THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinoid (CBN). Terpenes are small, aromatic compounds that give cannabis distinct flavors and scents. Cannabis contains more than 140 different terpenes, many of which are found in other plants, fruits, and flowers. The Entourage Effect is the synergistic relationship between terpenes, cannabinoids, and other compounds found in cannabis that produce the various effects experienced by the consumer. SHOULD I PICK THE STRAIN WITH THE HIGHEST THC NUMBER? Absolutely NOT! Cannabis is a cornucopia of pharmaceuticallyactive compounds that contribute to the ‘high’ experienced by the consumer. The high is modulated by hundreds to thousands of different compounds, not just THC. It is very important to emphasize A HIGHER THC NUMBER DOES NOT MEAN IT GETS YOU 'HIGHER'! *It is important to note that some THC numbers are
erroneously or intentionally inflated by certain laboratories. High Times

Topicals USING CANNABIS ON SKIN >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> By Jennifer Shepherd, RN
What are cannabis topicals and how do they work? Cannabis topicals are applied to the skin and can be found in the form of lotions, balms, oils including intimacy oil and massage oil, salves, sprays, and even transdermal patches. Topicals applied to the skin interact with the CB2 receptor which is the receptor site located on skin cells. In theory, the CB2 receptor site needs to be stimulated by CBN for the lock and key effect. CBD and THC work with CB2, however they are not lock and key. I have yet to see any products on the market containing CBN in topical form, however I have noted patients finding relief with the use of THCa, activated THC and CBD. Topicals sometimes have terpenes added to them which provide additional benefits. Most topicals applied to the skin do not breach the blood stream even if they contain active THC. However, in the case of transdermal patches, those will penetrate the blood stream. I would also like patients who are
worried about cannabis penetrating the blood stream with topicals to avoid the wrist. I once had a patient apply activated THC coconut oil to her wrists to avoid becoming high and she immediately became flushed and hot and needed to sit down. The episode only lasted a few minutes before she felt normal again. There are a lot of surface veins on the wrist so patients concerned about drug screens should be careful as this is just something I am unsure about and I am not aware of any research done on this. For the most part, patients seem to really enjoy topicals, especially people with neuropathy. Topicals are generally used for pain relief, inflammation, and stress relief. I have had patients report certain products showing relief for patients with TMJ, neuropathy, menstrual cramps, psoriasis, shingles, dermatitis, skin cancer and tumors localized near the skin. This is considered anecdotal evidence. Now, I have also seen some allergic reactions due to additive ingredients. So,
applying to a small area of skin first is advisable. Always initially test products on non-sensitive areas especially when using products that will be placed in sensitive areas such as around the eyes, face, and on sexual organs. These are the worst locations for an allergic reaction to occur, so test it out on the back of your hand, unless that skin is comprised in some way. I personally have used topicals for pain relief and what I have discovered is that THCa can also be used for pain relief. I went rock climbing for the first time with some friends. When we finished my hands were on FIRE! I did not have a topical on me at the time, however I had a raw flower that I was planning on consuming but instead I smashed it up and rubbed it on my hands, instantly the pain dissolved. It was incredible. A few weeks later I ended up breaking my leg. I used topicals for that as well, in conjunction with edibles instead of pharmaceutical medications. I’m not saying I was completely out of pain however, in my opinion
I am happy that I did not succumb to the need of chemical medicines over natural remedies and avoided the side effects of opioids. FDA BANS POWDERED MEDICAL GLOVES Powdered gloves were the standard in the medical glove world. They were used by almost anyone who needed to maintain a sterile environment. Powdered gloves were commonplace as the powder inside the gloves prevented hands from getting sweaty and also prevented gloves from sticking to hands when they were removed. Unbeknownst to most, recently the FDA deemed powdered gloves unsafe since the powder is a loose substance that may spread bacteria. Upon removal of powdered gloves, tiny particles of powder filled with germs could potentially cause contamination. This contamination has caused the spread of illness and bacteria in facilities that previously used powdered gloves. On January 18, 2017 the FDA officially banned the use of powdered gloves. The news of the ban is so recent that some facilities may not yet know. Always be aware of what type of medical supplies you are using in your facility. >>>> Alexis Solorzano >>>> Green Medical Supplies, A division of Champion Medical Supplies, greenmedicalsupplies.com

>>>>>>>> GLASSBLOWER SPOTLIGHT
KRYSTAL ANSON This month, we spotlight local GLASS artist KRYSTAL ANSON TO find out WHY She became a GLASSBLOWER, WHAT TYPE OF GLASS SHE SPECIALIZES IN and THE ARTISTS THAT INSPIRE HER.
How long have you been a glassblower and, how did you get into it? I've been blowing glass almost three years. When I was younger, we would go up to Virginia City and watch a guy through a window making little figurines. It was always something I was fascinated in. My mom's love for glass figurines helped inspire me to be able to make things for her. Are you originally from Northern Nevada? Yes, I was born here in Reno. What type of glass pieces do you specialize in? Do you have a signature piece? I specialize in dabbers, pendants and mini rigs. I'm constantly learning, improving, and practicing new techniques. I don't have a signature piece yet but I have a few things in the works. I’m still waiting to see where the creativity takes me. Are there any glassblowers or artists that inspire you? There are so many talented and inspirational artists that it would be hard to name them all. A few that I've worked closely with are Jason Lennon, Hex aka Joseph Gomez, and Sam Fildes. Each have had a huge impact on my glass career and inspire me daily. Where can we find your work? I currently work out of Burnt Knuckle Glass Studio and I am extremely thankful to be a part of the glass community there. I sell my glass to several head shops in the Reno/Carson City area as well as on Instagram. You can check out my Instagram page @kma420dabstar or @kmaglass. Do you consume cannabis? If so, favorite strain? Favorite method of consumption? I do. My favorite strain is SFV OG smoked out of a nice water piece.
52
Does cannabis play a role in your art? Yes, it helps me focus on what needs to be done and it allows me to tap into my inner creativity. What is your favorite cannabis and/or glassblowing event to attend? I haven't been to many events yet, but the most recent was D.F.O. (Degenerate Flame Off) in Oregon. It was nice to meet other glassblowers. I will be competing at the Eugene Flame Off in August and I am definitely looking forward to that. What recommendations would you give to those wanting to become glassblowers? If glass blowing is something you really want to do, don't give up. Follow your dreams - only you can make them a reality.

COOKING WITH
>>>>> cannabis INFUSED TACOS AND SANGRIA
I hope you had an amazing July 4th! As the weather heats up, this month you will find me at Chalice, Champs Trade Show, and The Canabud Show. I will be doing cooking demos at the Vegas Cannabis Magazine booth at Chalice, and also hosting The Canabud Show with The Vegas Cannabis Magazine family. At the Canabud Show, we will have the Medicated Chili Cook Off. Chefs will compete to cook their best chili. The attendees will judge the chili for the crown. Proceeds from the chili cook off will go to www.nativelikewater.org. The organization helps indigenous youth find balance in a changing world and I have been asked to assist the program by introducing cannabis funding into youth programs which help our children have more opportunities in academics, arts, sports, identity, travel and after school programs. The money and the kids are there and I see a good fit. I like the idea of cannabis business funded youth programs. I think it is the future in cannabis education and cannabis philanthropy. Looking forward to my Little League team The Little Kushes. The first business I started since finishing culinary school was the Fred Delicious catering truck. It was actually a taco truck that I served classical French, Italian, Mexican, and American food from. It was tough but I crushed it daily with a $1000 a day profit. My wife took money and I cooked the food and drove the truck. It was a great experience and loved the challenge of a mobile food business. These are some recipes from back in my taco truck days. I happen to love sangria, especially when it's hot and I’ve worked all day on the truck. Enjoy the medicated tacos and sangria in the early evening as it cools down a bit!

Infused Mexican Mayo Elote I gram concentrate Fresh corn Olive oil Mayonaise Butter Cotija cheese Lime wedges
DIRECTIONS: Preheat an outdoor grill to medium-high heat. INFUSION: Infuse 1 gram of concentrate into 1 TB olive oil. Whisk into mayo. Grill corn until hot and lightly charred all over, 7 to 10 minutes, depending on the temperature of the grill. Roll the ears in melted butter, then spread evenly with mayonnaise. Sprinkle with cotija cheese and serve with a lime wedge.
Bangin' Hot Sauce
2 grams concentrate infused into 2 TB olive oil 1 large tomato 4 medium tomatillos or 6 small ones 2 garlic cloves, peeled 1/3 medium white onion Salt to taste
DIRECTIONS: Heat a skillet or heavy griddle over medium heat. Once it’s hot, arrange the tomatoes, onion, tomatillos and garlic to roast on the skillet. Roast the ingredients until they start showing some blistering and look slightly softened, turning them to make sure they roast evenly. The roasting process will take about 8 minutes. If your tomatoes don’t look too softened, wrap them in aluminum foil for about 10 minutes, this will help them to finish cooking. Place all the ingredients in a blender: tomatoes, tomatillos, garlic, onion, infused olive oil and some arbol peppers. Process them until you have a fine texture. If your salsa is too thick add a little water. Season with salt and serve in a bowl.

Infused Red Chicken
3 tbs of infused olive (1gram cleared oil or 1 tb good quality pork lard plus 2 tablespoons oil), divided 3–4 chicken breast halves or 4–5 chicken thighs 2 cups chicken broth 2 cups of water 6 large red tomatoes 1 onion, cut into quarters 1 tablespoon red chile powder or chile paste 2 large clove of garlic, peeled and crushed 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder salt to taste
DIRECTIONS: Cover chicken with chicken broth and water. Bring to a boil. While the chicken is heating, slice the top off of each tomato and place them, cut sides down, on a cookie sheet along with the onions. Drizzle the other 2 tablespoons of oil over them. Place the cookie sheet under the broiler and leave it until the tomato skins become shriveled. While the tomatoes and onions are broiling, bring the chicken broth to a strong simmer and add the chile powder or paste, garlic, oregano, cumin, and cocoa powder. When the tomatoes are ready, remove from broiler and let cool for about one minute. While the tomatoes cool, turn the chicken pieces in the pot. Peel the skin off of each tomato and use a spoon to remove the seeds from the middle. Mash the tomato a little and add into the sauce in the pot. Separate the onions and stir into the sauce. Let the sauce reduce, boiling gently and uncovered, while the chicken finishes cooking. Cook until the chicken reaches 170°F. If the liquid cooks off too fast, add about a half cup of water and continue cooking, repeating if necessary. Serve your Pollo Rojo with corn tortillas and white rice or Mexican rice, if you like. Be sure to refrigerate any leftovers for future use, as they are delicious. Make it authentic by sprinkling each portion with a small handful of finely diced raw onion mixed with cilantro. This will add color, flavor, and texture.

Marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man.
