Welcome to our annual Women's Issue! This month, as we celebrate Mother's Day, we also thought it would be the perfect time to celebrate women in general. Check out our feature on the women moving the Nevada cannabis industry forward. Then, hop on over to our website and read about even more awesome women. In addition, if there are women you would like to see included, please let us know by sending an email to editor@tahoecannabismag.com. For our cover feature, I had the chance to chat with the amazing Whoopi Goldberg to find out why she consumes medical cannabis. She also gave me some insight into her company Whoopi & Maya which is launching here locally this month. Pink Leaf, a female focused brand, under the Redwood umbrella is close to their launch. We had the chance to speak with Paul Schloss, President and CEO of Redwood who intends to not only bring products specifically designed for women to the market but to also ensure that Pink Leaf equally employs women in it's company. Happy Mother's Day!

WHOOPI GOLDBERG
TAHOE CANNABIS // #775TCM //
14
THIS MONTH, WE WILL SEE AN AMAZING PRODUCT LINE ENTER THE NEVADA MARKET WHICH WAS CREATED IN PART BY ACTRESS AND COMEDIAN WHOOPI GOLDBERG. WHOOPI, ALONG WITH HER BUSINESS PARTNER MAYA ELISABETH HAVE CREATED A PHENOMENAL CANNABIS BRAND GEARED TOWARDS WOMEN AND I RECENTLY HAD THE CHANCE TO CHAT WITH WHOOPI TO FIND OUT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE HERE LOCALLY.
STEPHANIE SHEHAN: I believe that all cannabis use is in some way medical as many self-defined recreational users do not realize they are also medical consumers. Do you consume cannabis medically, recreationally, or both? WHOOPI GOLDBERG: I mostly consume cannabis medically these days,
and because I can’t consume flower or roll, it’s all about my vape pen.
STEPHANIE: You've mentioned publicly that you treat glaucoma with cannabis. What is your preferred method of consumption for glaucoma? What symptoms does it relieve? And, are there any other medical conditions you treat with cannabis? WHOOPI: Cannabis relieves the headache caused by swelling in
the eye stem. I never knew I had these headaches until I stopped smoking joints. I was then given a vape pen by my daughter, which got rid of the headaches, and I put two-and-two together. I also have had friends use weed to counter the effects of hemo and others issues of the body.
STEPHANIE: Do you prefer CBD, THC or a combination? WHOOPI: THC and CBD can work in tandem, so both. STEPHANIE: Your female-oriented cannabis company, Whoopi & Maya specializes in issues such as cramps and PMS. What led you to start this company, and to start it with Maya?
WHOOPI: Once I realized that I wanted to use medicinal marijuana as a way to help women find a better way to deal with cramps, I knew I had to start this company. I wanted to find a way to create medicinal marijuana in a form not meant to get you high, but to improve the quality of a woman’s life without screwing up her stomach with antiquated remedies, or something created by men with a name that leads you to nowhere, or other pills that may cure pain but are addictive. We are topical so you can carry it in your bag, and use it when you need it. STEPHANIE: Do you believe teenage girls should have the ability to
treat period symptoms with cannabis? If so, in what ways would you like to see women educated about products such as yours?
WHOOPI: I feel that Whoopi & Maya improves productivity because it
treats symptoms, and women don’t need to take any time away from work due to their periods, same with girls in school. As long as the products are topical, and state laws are followed, I don’t have any issue with young women using them. I don’t think anybody wants their kids high in the streets, so we’ve tried to make sure that we help alleviate the pain with the topicals.
PhotoS By: TIMOTHY WHITE
If you’re just looking to get high, you can find weed that will take you there, but that’s not what our products are about. Our products help relax the body and try to make it easier for you to get through the day and function. Whoopi & Maya products like SOAK are good for young women—you get in the tub, soak, and get relief. They can use SAVOR, our raw, organic cacao, that helps relax the muscles to feel better. I also must tell you that it’s not just women who use our products, which is why they would like us to change the name. Men love us as well because our products work really well for things like muscle aches. Nothing works on 100% of people, but our line treats a lot of people for a lot of different things. People use us when their joints are bad, and some people use our products for headaches because you can just rub it on your temples. I don’t know what all works for different people, I just know that people have told me this works for them.
STEPHANIE: Your products will be in Nevada dispensaries this month (May), will your entire line be available? If so, can you go through the products and what each is used for? WHOOPI: All of our products will be available in Nevada this month. We have a cannabis body balm (RUB), a THC infused tincture (RELAX), an organic, raw cacao (SAVOR), and a bath soak (SOAK). You use these products as needed, and it really depends on what you’re doing. Sometimes people will use our bath soak if they have a huge muscle spasm, and sometimes runners will use the rub before they run. Some people even eat the raw cacao in the car because it makes their stomachs feel better from all of the medication they’ve been taking. You know what you need when you use these products, and the whole line will be there. Eventually there will be more things out there, but right now, this is what we have, and if you have muscle issues, we might be a really great choice for you.
everyone, but they give it to you anyway. Weed offers an alternative, and people want that.
STEPHANIE: As a business owner in the cannabis industry, are
you concerned that the government, now with Sessions/ Trump in charge, will ever step in and shut companies down?
WHOOPI: No. STEPHANIE: Do you reside in a recreational state? If not, where is your state with legalization?
WHOOPI: No, but New York and New Jersey are finding their way.
STEPHANIE: Do you plan to expand to other states? WHOOPI: Yes, anywhere cramps, muscle spasms, and a whole lot of other aches and pains live. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for as many people as we can. The Whoopi & Maya products are for everyone. Mothers can help daughters by giving them the rub because it won’t get you high, and in many, it has faded cramps. I wish I could say our products work on everyone but that would not be true. You just have to try Whoopi & Maya products to see if they can help you.
STEPHANIE: Here in Nevada, you are working with Altitude Products, tell me how that relationship came to fruition.
WHOOPI: Krista Whitley at Altitude liked the sound of our
products so she talked to one of our board members and asked if I could visit some of the dispensaries there and talk to the owners. I said sure, and after doing so, I realized that she was the person we should be in with. She’s a woman, and she truly understood the “why” of Whoopi & Maya. Also, she is REALLY smart.
STEPHANIE: Do you believe that the federal government will ever deschedule cannabis?
WHOOPI: Yes, I don’t think they’ll have a choice. This medicine is very different in that it has the components it needs to work right in the plant. The growers know THC and CBD, and they don’t have to include any extras in the plant. They don’t need to add things you cannot pronounce. People want a cleaner cure for their ailments. Oxy doesn’t work for

BIG MIKE PARKER LEAVES HOLE IN CANNABIS COMMUNITY
I
By: Dr. Aseem Sappal
’d like to think that cannabis grows in heaven. But, if it doesn’t, I’m sure Big Mike Parker will figure out a way to grow beautiful ‘girls’ up there. Oaksterdam University and its community lost its heartbeat in Big Mike this April. He was a special person, some have even called him a secret superhero of the cannabis movement. Big Mike was a master grower and lead horticulture technician at OU. As a giant man with a heart to match, he was easily recognizable on campus and always willing to share his knowledge and experience about cultivating cannabis with students. He was growing cannabis during the American cannabis cultivation movement in the 1960s and 1970s. If you asked him how he got started growing, he’d say, “When I was 16 years old, I could no longer afford the cannabis I was using, so I figured...I’d have to start growing it!” OU staff and thousands of OU alumni are glad he did. Big Mike joined Oaksterdam in 2009 as a volunteer and was officially hired in 2010. The knowledge he shared with so many students stemmed from five decades of experience, including being mentored by such legendary cultivators as Ed Rosenthal and Kyle Kushman. Like all great instructors, Big Mike shared more than just knowledge. Executive Chancellor Dale Sky Jones said, “He was everyone’s true cheerleader and would go out of his way to to make sure you felt you could do it – because he knew you could do it.” Big Mike rallied around Oaksterdam in everything that we faced. On Monday, April 2, 2012, Oaksterdam was raided by agents of the Internal Revenue Service, assisted by federal law enforcement which left the college in ruins; damage amounted to tens of thousands of dollars, all for political reasons. No legal charges were ever filed, yet doors were broken, computers snatched, records removed, and lab cannabis plants cut down or removed. As a result, 108 employees lost their jobs and medical benefits. Big Mike, Dale, me and a small group of volunteers showed up the Wednesday following the raid to teach the last semester class scheduled. Ironically, the topic was legal raid preparation and training. Later that year, Big Mike helped us move from our Broadway campus to a more affordable location at 1734 Telegraph Avenue to help recover losses. And since then Big Mike helped Oaksterdam University grow into the world's preeminent cannabis learning institution, with the world’s only hands on cultivation lab, that he guided with his leadership. He cared about cannabis but he also cared about his colleagues and students. When he wasn’t teaching, Big Mike was behind the scenes making sure the cannabis plants were perfectly positioned for our media interviews, photoshoots, and legislative tours. He always had my back, whether it was for a new idea I wanted to leverage or a major endeavor, such as starting up a cannabis research and development center in Jamaica. Big Mike gave so much. He is, and will continue to be, missed. Big Mike was also the CEO of both the Oaksterdam Nursery (since 2012) and Oaksterdam “Cones” (since 2010). He lived in Oakland, was a proud father and an avid Harley-Davidson enthusiast, who enjoyed riding his ‘hog’ and hanging with his Chihuahua, Midnight. He left behind Peggy DeLapp, his partner since 2001, and eight children. Please go to this Go Fund Me page to help with funeral expenses and to assist his family.

TALES FROM THE CRIP
By Peter Jay
YOU CAN'T FOOL ME We merry marijuana users always seem to find each other, and it is not always just by smell. Have you ever met someone new and felt an instant kinship or bond with that person? Sure, maybe you share friends or relatives, maybe a job, but sometimes you just KNOW that your new friend is a fellow warrior in the Green Army. Right or wrong?Perhaps I’m a bit biased, but besides my dogs (who truly get me), my stoner friends invariably win over the straights when it comes to with whom I choose to hang out (blunts over bingo, babe).
Personally, I believe that, if you consume enough Heaven’s Lettuce, eventually your brain evolves...
Sometimes, you may have known and loved somebody for years and had zero idea that they indulged; then, one day you find out and (literally) say “OH SHIT! No WONDER we got along so well!” (looking at you, ea!). Personally, I believe that, if you consume enough Heaven’s Lettuce, eventually your brain evolves (it turns green) and you gain the ability to better determine who does and does not visit God’s Salad Bar (which does NOT have broccoli, because I hate broccoli and it’s my article). That’s the premise for this month’s column, anyways—if you don’t like it, feel free to proceed to the Ruckus Rant—he’s a hoot. So, based purely on my opinion (evidence is for suckers), let us discuss which famous and/or historical figures likely were or were not stoners: Ben Franklin: Ben was the Channing Tatum of his time. Handsome, rich, intelligent and visionary, Ben was reported to have had difficulty walking due to all of the women hanging about his knees and ankles. He was a media pioneer, a world traveler, a celebrated scientist, a Postmaster, and a signatory of both The Constitution and The Declaration of Independence. So was he a stoner? Ben is likely best known in popular culture as the guy who flew a kite with a key threaded through the string during a lightning storm. While some of this story is true (he theorized that lighting was electricity, which was heresy at the time), he wasn’t an idiot with a death wish—wet twine conducts electricity quite well, thanks. I see him lying on his back out in a field one night, watching lightning dancing across the sky and thinking “DUDE! What is that sparkly sky writing, and how do I get it DOWN HERE?” Who thinks of something like that? Yes, I believe that old Bender was definitely a smoker. Dr. early as
22
Seuss: I have long believed that most cannabis enthusiasts were exposed and often to the collected works of Theodore Geisel, who is better known Dr. Seuss. Where do I even begin with this guy? For starters, he really didn’t like kids: “You have them. I’ll amuse them”, quoth the Seuss to his publisher. For that matter, his timeless parental superhero

The Grinch had a real autobiographical kick to him, at least if you believe everybody who knew him. For evidence of my assertion, I need share only one title: “Green Eggs and Ham”. For starters, green eggs and ham? GREEN eggs and GREEN ham? It sounds like weed-code to me…I have never heard a single good thing about having food poisoning; while E coli might be a great way to lose weight (as you do with projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhea), I’d rather skip desert. Clearly, he was trying to reach out with a message for us conspiracyminded weed bloggers. Finally, “Green Eggs and Ham” was written on a bet; his publisher (Bennett Cerf, if that means anything to you) bet him a fatty (I’m assuming) that he couldn’t write a story using only the fifty words used in the story. Spoiler alert: he did it. Total stoner. Jesus Christ: Yes, were I not already Hell-bound, this entry would definitely rocket me to the head of the line. I am a righteous God-fearing dude, but let’s give credit where credit is due! His Father invented the stuff; you think he wasn’t going to share with his own kid? That’s like being Enzo Ferrari and giving your kid a skateboard for his 21st birthday. I consider God just ETERNALLY cool, and I KNOW that he wouldn’t do JC like that. Well, OK, he let him be crucified and all, but that’s just MORE reason to smoke him up BEFORE that fateful Friday. Long, long before then. Granted, I never smoked with MY parents or my kids, but I am not God. So what is my proof? SERIOUSLY? There is nothing that I enjoy more post-consumption than head-fucking people. I am the guy who pages himself over the office intercom system without disguising my voice. I am the guy who eats vanilla pudding with a spoon out of a repurposed mayonnaise jar. Can you imagine the mayhem that I would create if I could walk on FREAKING WATER? Of course, if Jesus did smoke some Daddy’s Delight, you can just bet that his apostles did, too. Imagine the stories they would tell! “We were all BAKED on some Roman Red, and we were starving! Peter forgot the unleavened bread, but Jesus hooked it up with some fish sandwiches! It’s crazy—we were in the desert!” See you in Hell! Hey, I’m running out of things to talk about! The Fab Four Behind
Remedy Cannabis >>>
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael. The Beatles had George, John, Paul and Ringo. Kira, Martha, Mersadies and Taylor are the Fab Four behind the curtain of Remedy’s hand trimmed premium flower. The practice of hand trimming preserves the integrity of the marijuana flower. Every plant that Remedy grows is harvested, cured and hand trimmed by these four ladies. As part of the cultivation crew they monitor and track every single plant carefully, adhering to Remedy’s cultivation and hand trimming procedures. While larger operations manage a team of a dozen or more trimmers, these four handle business and get the job done right. This tight knit crew of women at Remedy has streamlined the harvest and trimming process into a finely tuned, well oiled premium cannabis machine. Remedy was kind enough to open their doors and give us an interview with their Fab Four.
TAHOE Cannabis: What are your official job titles with Remedy?
Martha Pulido: I am Trim Lead, AKA Master Trimmer, AKA The Fastest Trimmer. Taylor Turner: Fastest trimmer? Psssh, when she
wants to be.
Mersadies Graves: If she’s a Master Trimmer, then I’m definitely a Master Trimmer
Kira Piggot: If we’re making up titles, I’m the Renaissance Woman of the cultivation facility. Taylor Turner: Oooh… Then I’m Trim Mom! The back and forth between these ladies was so quick. Like they were all riffing off each other in a n improv act. With each jab at each other, their voices got louder and louder until the door opened. Our interview was interrupted when Pete Westbrook, Harvest Manager entered the room. Pete Westbrook: Ladies, ladies, ladies… Settle down. You are all Master Trimmers. Westbrook smiled and shut the door. I guess the walls are kind of thin at Remedy. Our interview continued.

BY RANDY VILLARBA
TC: How do you feel about how the cannabis industry perceives and treats women?
MP: I feel it is very sexualized. Most of the time when you
see women in cannabis, they hire hot women, take photos of them smoking. Using sex to sell. There are a lot of women in this industry like us too. Working hard. We have the knowledge and skills. Just like the men do.
KP: I think the cannabis industry embraces women, but is also very lenient. There can be limitations if you do not take the time to rise up in this industry yourself. MG: I think it’s very sexist that women are only expected to be in the store front because of their looks. When it comes to the cultivation side, a lot of people think that women can’t handle the work load. As a result… how many of the cultivators in this industry are women? But look at us four. We actually get to harvest. We ladies get to do something that has always been described as more of a man’s job. Being a woman doesn’t mean we are incapable of doing heavy duty shit. We’ll take down an entire room in a day. Us four. I would like there to be more opportunities for women in the industry. TT: It is biased but I think this industry is going to evolve and progress. Right now I’m gaining my work experience. It wasn’t always this way. I got my start when I worked in Humboldt. I’m here now getting my education, so I can be a figure in this industry. Women will slowly gain progress. I had to prove myself. We will change this industry. TC: What is the most cannabis you trimmed in a single day? MP: The most I’ve trimmed was 5 lbs. MG: I’ve trimmed almost 5 lbs. I was literally .25 away. TT: I’ve trimmed 4.7 lbs. KP: There was a 6 lbs. day I’ve been trying to revisit. The other three ladies each raised an eyebrow and looked over to Kira. Kira smiled back.
TC: What are your favorite strains that Remedy grows? And which are your favorite to consume?
MP: Our Blue Dream and the Deadhead OG grow amazing.

Both easy to trim. Electric Ginger is my favorite to trim. Super hairy. An easier trim. I use vape carts and I like joints. Island Sweet Skunk is my shiz. That’s the bee’s knees to sweeten my teeth, if you know what I mean. I also really like the Clementine, the Tangieness, and I love the highs. Sativas that don’t make you anxious. Those are my two bubba boos.
TT: I really like the Clementine, Electric Ginger, Pre 98 Bubba Kush & our 707 Headband. To consume I like the Clementine, ideally as our Clemon Kush Live Resin vape cartridge. I’m not really a flower girl I tend to vape and use concentrates more. KP: Durban Poison and Deadhead OG would be the favorites
from our line. My favorite way of consuming is via a big ass, 3d printed bong, filled with ice on two levels. I always light a candle and use the match to relight my bowls through the night.
MG: The Pre 98 Bubba because I love Indicas. Also the Deadhead OG and Blue Dream. Those three are my favorites to smoke and trim. I’m more of a dabber than flower smoker. Our Channel 2 Shatter actually was the first thing I tried when I first started working in the industry at Cannacopia. I tried Remedy and TerpX, before I even
worked here. It’s cool to be a part of it now.
TC: What’s it like working with an all woman trimming crew? MP: They make me feel empowered. We connect on a
different level. Us four working together have a great bond. We’ve gotten close and I really enjoy the women I work with. We are all women working hard as fuck. It takes a special kind of girl to do all the trimming, hanging and harvesting.
KP: Working with an all lady team is pretty nice. We can all relate to each other. MG: It’s interesting… I usually don’t get along with girls
that often, because I can be quite of a tom boy. I have a whole group of friends at work. We’re very unfiltered when we’re together.
TT: To be honest, I didn’t know how I was going to feel but now I actually enjoy coming to work. I can talk their ears off. Fuck with them and it’s all love. Right guys? Silence for a beat. Then they all erupt with laughter.

The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers
Significant change appears to be on the horizon for the cannabis industry nationwide. While the outright end of cannabis prohibition may still seem like a dream, there is major change happening at the federal level right now related to cannabis that makes it clear which way the smoke is drifting! Having the federal government ease up on its cannabis laws would obviously help resolve many of the pressing obstacles and issues plaguing the industry in Nevada and other states in which cannabis is legalized and regulated. Of particular note, it would make it easier for lawabiding marijuana businesses to find banking solutions, as current options are almost non-existent. But I’ll save my canna-banking rant for another article, as I have much to cover this month. The benefits that would come with the end of federal prohibition are massive, and it’s exciting to see steps being taken in that direction. Currently, 30 states have legalized cannabis for medical use with a doctor’s recommendation. However, in November 2018, residents of both Utah and Oklahoma will be voting on ballot measures to join the ranks and – despite being typically conservative states – will likely raise this number to 32. Nine of these states (and Washington D.C.) have legalized marijuana recreationally for adults regardless of a doctor’s note. As more states legalize cannabis in some form or fashion, the many uses for and wonderful benefits of cannabis continue to be discovered, researched, and perfected. For example, recent studies claim that legalizing cannabis may help fight the opioid crisis that is currently taking grasp of our country. Opioid overdoses are now the leading cause of accidental deaths among adults in America. In 2016 alone, more Americans died as a result of opioid overdoses than traffic accidents and homicides combined. This is a heartbreaking fact, and if cannabis may be able to bring these numbers down, we need to at least make an effort. In a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers found that opioid prescription rates dropped by 5.88% in states that have legalized medical marijuana compared to others. Notably, in states that have licensed dispensaries, opioid use decreased by 14.5%. If these studies are to be believed, cannabis could be a great weapon against opioid addiction. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is also set to usher in a new era in the cannabis industry, as it will soon be giving approval for the first prescription medication in the United States derived from cannabis. Last month, an advisory panel of the FDA unanimously recommended approval of Epidiolex, an epilepsy medication made using cannabidiol (CBD) - one of most prevalent cannabinoids in cannabis. While this is not a wholesale approval of cannabis by the FDA, it is yet another acknowledgment that cannabis has medicinal qualities and has no place being listed as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act.
36
Clearly I’m not the only person who feels cannabis is wrongfully placed alongside heroin and methamphetamine as a Schedule I drug. Just in time for the 420 holiday festivities, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that he would be introducing legislation to decriminalize cannabis on the federal level. Schumer’s bill would remove “marihuana” (the old-school spelling of marijuana that the feds used when crafting the laws) from the list of substances prohibited by the Controlled Substances Act. The bill would not make cannabis legal nationwide - it would simply remove the federal prohibition of it. Each state would then have full authority whether and how to legalize and regulate cannabis. Schumer’s bill wouldn’t remove all federal oversight; federal authorities would still have authority to penalize those trafficking cannabis from legal states to states where it remains illegal, as well as other enforcement duties. While not as ambitious or as much of a game-changer as Schumer’s bill, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has introduced legislation of his own that the hemp industry and CBD-lovers should pay attention to. If you recall from the March 2018 article of the Cannab-Esq. Chronicles (#7), there is a lot of confusion and grey-area around Industrial Hemp (cannabis containing < 0.3% THC) and the legality of CBD. McConnell’s bill, the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, aims to settle that battle once and for all. The bill explicitly removes Industrial Hemp – and the CBD derived from it – from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act, making it an agricultural commodity available for interstate commerce. While Industrial Hemp is already booming around the nation, this bill should invigorate the industry and will finally declare in uncertain terms that CBD is not an illegal substance. Schumer’s yet to be named cannabis declassification bill and the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 are exactly what the cannabis industry has been waiting for! The injustice and anxiety suffered by those in the cannabis industry over the fact they are violating federal law and committing multiple felonies every day needs to end. These bills would also help remove the stigma associated with cannabis and allow state-licensed and law-abiding marijuana establishments to thrive. I urge you to contact your representatives in Congress and demand they vote to pass these bills! If you don’t, they might not become law and a federal crackdown remains possible. If that happens and you find yourself on the wrong end of the law – don’t say I didn’t warn you! Instead, call 702-333-3334 and ask for Mitchell S. Canna-Bisson! #StayWoke! GREEN LIFE PRODUCTIONS Legend OG It’s usually a scary thing to be caught up in a love triangle, but don’t worry about this one. Your lady will be cool with it. That is, if she’s also 420-friendly. This shit feels so good. Smoke it with your lady and have your own little experience. All kidding aside, this new GLP strain is an immediate top 5 favorite among their genetics, respectively. Pucker up for it. You’ll love it.
What a Legend my boy, Steve Cantwell is. I just smoked another joint with Steve’s Championship Belt TCM Filter Tip inserted into the joint’s butt. Yeah, this strain is another kick-ass pheno. Anyone who loves that piney OG Kush ought to rush out and get some of this flower before the batch is vamanos. I’m a big fan of everything my friend Steve does. It’s awesome to be a big fan of a good friend whose work is legendary, what a Legendary OG. Smoke him up!

MEDIZIN D-I-Y Powder
This flavorless additive is a perfect supplement for any cannabis junkie. Just mix it into your pudding, yogurt, drink, cereal, ice cream, or anything else you might ingest. Medizin has a knack for inventing new products and ways to get medicated. This product looks similar to cocaine or flour, so be sure to keep it in its original, labeled packaging to prevent any hypocritical conservative alcoholics from over-scrutinizing and misidentifying your weed. Don’t underestimate this powder. Use it sparingly unless you have a high tolerance. THC- 107.06mg/g
I can’t stop hitting this Mary Chino! Medizin nailed it with this run. Just look at those numbers. Plenty of THC, CBN for days, and terps in the double digits. About that CBN … Steep Hill Labs claims 5mg of CBN is equal to 10mg of diazepam, commonly known as Valium. Anxiety sufferers rejoice! Only a few pulls on this cartridge and I feel completely at ease. The euphoric effects are secondary to the relaxation my body is experiencing, but I do feel high. This is an excellent product that crosses the bridge between medical and recreational use. I give Medizin’s Mary Chino cart an A+! THC- 79.32% CBN- 26.7mg/g Terpinolene- 31.86mg/g Myrcene- 18.01mg/g Limonene- 3.96mg/g Pinene- 2.18mg/g

I remember a Saturday morning cartoon commercial for Strawberry Shortcake Cereal. That shit used to repeat in my head like a broken record, “Strawberry Shortcake Cereal, It’s delicious!” Sometimes it still repeats in my head. Especially today since I’m puffing on this Berner Exotix Strawberry Shortcake. It is delicious, and this flower offers a light fruity hint of berry, but a steady OG green base. Put some smoke in your face, and replace that bad attitude. It’s hard to be rude or prude with a little Strawberry Shortcake interlude. Make sure to include your homies. Good timing. There were only 2 left. That will put her to sleep twice. I don’t usually feel much from 100mg of THC, but I know it’s doing my body good. I usually feel a bit slower the next day. TOKIN' WITH THE INFAMOUS
I
Dion Markgraaff
t may seem odd to spend Earth Day trying to burn down a building, but that’s exactly what I did with longtime friend and well-known cannabis and hemp activist, Dion Markgraaff, who is also the Vice President of Hemp Technologies Global. To be clear, we’re not pyromaniacs, it was a model structure made of Hempcrete, and we were proving that this building material is impossible to catch fire. This demonstration was held at an event put on by Dion called The Cannabis Village, which drew thousands of people and educated them on all the benefits of the hemp plant. Hopper: Hey brother, it’s so great to see that you’re still innovating after all these years. We go way back to when you had the very first collective in San Diego. That was ’98, right? Dion: Thanks, it’s been a long road. It was ’97, maybe a month or two after the law passed.
Hopper: And you’ve been paving that road for quite a long time now. Dion: Yeah, hopefully we’re on the brink of some more huge breakthroughs. Hopper: It was dope to spend Earth Day at your event, The Cannabis Village, in Balboa Park, where there were thousands of like-minded people learning about and being exposed to things they may not come across every day. You did a really awesome job educating the public about hemp and Hempcrete. Dion: Yeah, thanks. It served lots of different purposes. Having a chance for the outside world to look in, and also for people within the movement and the industry to meet each other and make connections. Hopper: Tell our readers about the benefits of the hemp plant in building materials. It’s obviously been around forever,
BY HOPPER THE CHRONISSEUR
but it’s really been getting a lot of attention lately. Dion: It’s just a superior raw material that we’ve been using throughout time. In this last century, we got manipulated into using inferior products. Society was manipulated, really. The flowers and the smoke and everything was a distraction to fool the people about the big issues.
Hopper: It was truly amazing to see. Dion: Yeah, it’s an amazing plant. We’re just at the beginning of reintegrating it into society again.
Hopper: It’s that ‘Reefer Madness’ mentality.
Hopper: Like people have been saying forever, it’s the worlds perfect plant.
Dion: Yeah, it was like standard economic manipulation.
Dion: We’ve been evolving with it since the beginning.
Hopper: I’ve got to say, I’m blown away by the Hempcrete. I hadn’t seen it in person prior to Earth Day, I know you’ve been telling me about it for a while now. It’s amazing! We basically took a torch to a structure built with it, and it would not burn. It’s flame resistant, it’s sturdy. My question is, how did it come about, and why it is such a superior building material?
Hopper: True that! You’re an OG in the cannabis and hemp world with 25 years of work and activism under your belt. You’ve always had the vision, and the actions, of treating the earth well and promoting hemp and cannabis. What have been some of the highlights over the years?
Dion: Well, this is actually how we’ve been building throughout time. The Roman aqueducts and almost everything that’s lasted throughout time has been built with this lime and plant mixture, but throughout time we didn’t have quite the access that we do today to make a whole wall out of hemp. Yeah, it’s totally superior. It was one of my favorite parts of the whole day, trying to burn the house down in front of everyone! Hopper: Yeah, we got some dope pictures of that. Watching the flame get white hot, and it didn’t even come close to burning a hole in it.
46
Dion: It’s like trying to burn a rock. The lime makes the plant material turn back into a rock.
Dion: Looking back, of course, creating the High Times Cannabis Cup in a foreign country at the height of the drug war was one of the highlights. Changing Mexico recently, getting cannabinoids into the country and helping to change their laws. Hopper: That’s huge, when you can change a country. Dion: You know, it’s just exposing the truth. The truth is the truth. Hopper: That’s right. The truth will stand when the world’s on fire! Dion: Yes, and it’s on fire, so… Hopper: How many of those homes in the recent wildfires in California and other places would
have been saved if they were built with Hempcrete? Dion: : All of them. Wouldn’t have lost one. And sadly, a house burned down the night of Earth Day in San Diego, and I saw another one in LA where someone was killed. It’s a constant threat. Hopper: You’re currently the VP of Hemp Technologies Global. Will you explain to VCM readers what that is all about? Dion: I basically sell it, and communicate its superior qualities to get the whole thing rolling. I basically recruited them to move here from New Zealand, and now we’re in San Diego and there is endless opportunity. Hopper: What do you think the future holds for hemp in America? Dion: We can grow it now here in California. This is the first year. Unfortunately, they haven’t come out with the permits yet, so you have to go through a university. But there will still be hemp growing this year, it’s just sad that it’s taking so long. We basically lost a year through inactions from the industry and government. Hopper: The bureaucracy must be so frustrating.
speak on our stage. Those are the two most powerful positions in our whole area. The revolution is upon us. Hopper: And it will be televised! Dion: Yes, indeed. Hopper: So on that note, is there anything you’d like to add before we go? Any shout outs? Dion: You can check out all about The Cannabis Village on The Association of Cannabis Professionals website. It’s a trade group in San Diego that’s getting everything passed and fighting for more rights. Hopper: Do you plan on expanding into Nevada? Dion: Yeah, we’re already in Nevada. They have a great hemp industry going. Of course, the properties of hemp would be tremendous in a weather challenged region like Nevada. Hopper: That’s a good point. I noticed the temperature inside the Hempcrete house was so much cooler than outside. Dion: Yeah, you save 50-70% on energy consumption, and it’s a humidity regulator.
Dion: Well, we’ve had a lot of good political movement. Mitch McConnell not only introduced a bill to legalize hemp throughout the country, he fast tracked it right down to the floor for a vote coming up, so it doesn’t have to go through committee, where most bills die.
Hopper: Sounds like it would make a hell of a grow house, too!
Hopper: That’s huge. Chuck Schumer just recently came out in favor as well.
Hopper: That’s great advice. Thanks again for taking the time to tell TCM readers about Hempcrete.
Dion: Yeah, we’re taking over. That’s another thing I liked about the Cannabis Village, was having a candidate for Sheriff and a real contender for District Attorney
Dion: Oh yeah! And since it’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, anyone who has mothers or clones, should be doing them in a hemp structure to help with those issues.

>>>CBD FOR WOMEN
>>>> By Krista Whitley
CANNABIDIOL (CBD) IS ONE OF THE REASONS CANNABIS OFFERS SO MANY DIVERSE MEDICINAL AND THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS. WITH ABSOLUTELY NO TOXICITY (FEELING HIGH) WHEN YOU CONSUME CBD, IT IS AN IDEAL WELLNESS CHOICE FOR CONSUMERS WHO ARE HESITANT TO INDULGE IN THE REGULATED CANNABIS MARKET.
What is CBD?
Cannabidiol is one of at least 113 cannabinoids identified in cannabis. It is a major phytocannabinoid, accounting for up to 40% of the plant's extract. CBD occurs naturally in breast milk, prompting some to hypothesize that cannabinoids support your immune system and development.
How does CBD work?
In the human body we all have endocannabinoid systems. Simply put, CBD helps to make things happen in our endocannabinoid system. It acts like a catalyst for our bodies. The scientific explanation is a bit more complex. CBD affects the body’s endocannabinoid system by activating other receptors (like serotonin receptors) and reduces the action of an enzyme that works on the endocannabinoid system. CBD also prevents the breakdown of anandamide, your body’s primary natural cannabinoid. Recent studies of CBD demonstrate the potential to positively affect everything from pain to anxiety.
48
How can CBD help women?
Women in my life have taken CBD for everything from eczema to diabetes to managing their monthly menstrual cycle. CBD appears to have a wide range of wellness benefits that include acne, fibromyalgia, schizophrenia, insomnia, multiple sclerosis, and Crohn’s disease. CBD has evolved to be considered by many women as another holistic wellness option, just like essential oils or practicing yoga.
Does it matter if you get your CBD from cannabis or industrial hemp?
It’s important to understand that if you take 25 mg of CBD, it doesn’t matter whether the CBD comes from a hemp plant or a cannabis plant: they’re exactly the same chemically and will do exactly the same things. There is a lot of confusion about terms when it comes to hemp CBD and cannabis CBD. If you are specifically looking to medicate for seizures or epilepsy you may find more comprehensive relief using whole plant medicine, with THC and CBD, but if you are comparing CBD alone, it makes no difference where the CBD is extracted from.

aul Schloss is the President and CEO of local cultivation facility, Redwood. After being in the industry for quite some time, he and his team recognized that women drive the large majority of all consumer purchases. Women tend to be the primary caregivers for their families and seniors, and women often times are the ones putting in the time and effort to research the array of medical benefits that the cannabis plant provides. Knowing this led Schloss to create Pink Leaf, a line which will focus on cannabis products geared towards women and seniors. We recently had the chance to chat with Mr. Schloss about Pink Leaf and the products he plans to bring to the market.
TCM: Tell us why Pink Leaf was founded. PAUL SCHLOSS: Since founding Getting Legal, the
medical cannabis card company, and introducing tens of thousands of women to the medical benefits of cannabis, I knew that Pink Leaf was a must. Our staff members would take the extra time to listen to the specific needs of women and older patients that were coming in to obtain their medical cards. At that time, we were having trouble directing most patients to the products that could help them because they didn’t exist. We knew, in time those products would come, we just weren’t sure when and how reliable they would be, so we decided to put our money where our mouths were and create Pink Leaf. We’ve taken our time in launching this company as we decide on the appropriate products to cater to women and seniors. And, taking it one step further, we are committed to integrating gender and age equality in positions and compensation for those employed with us.
52
TCM: Pink Leaf is aiming to focus on women and
seniors. What will the product line and pricing look like?
PS: We’re dedicated to manufacturing affordable products that will help with anxiety, depression, insomnia, fibromyalgia, and other conditions through bath soaks, gummies, vape pens, topicals, tinctures and specific flower strains. TCM: When will we see the Pink Leaf product line in dispensaries? PS: We are set for a preliminary launch in June and a full product line rollout by September 2018. TCM: What changes do you plan to implement in Pink Leaf to ensure that women are fairly employed and compensated? PS: We will run internal audits throughout the year to ensure our company is well balanced in all departments including grow, extractions, packaging, distribution and our administrative offices. TCM: What will set the Pink Leaf brand apart from other brands attempting to cater to women and seniors? PS: I feel our experience and our understanding of the products and market sets us apart from our competitors. We don’t need to make these products, we want to make these products, so we will take our time and roll them out when they are ready and reliable. Currently, many companies are simply private labeling items and sticking them on shelves without making sure they actually work. TCM: How can we learn more about Pink Leaf? PS: You can visit our website at Pinkleaf.com to learn more about our company and products.

ON THE ROAD WITH
Chef Fred
C
onsulting the larger, international companies swimming through the murky waters of new emerging medical cannabis countries, the needs are of quick calculated remedies and fast plans of action. Thursday March 29th my phone rings to a number that is becoming familiar. "Yeah Mon", founder of Acres Agriculture St. Vincent, Reginald S. says education is needed to the farmers for proper cultivation practices and cannabinoid knowledge. Can you please be on a plane Sunday, April 1st to come and teach the first ever Medical Cannabis Educational Series for the local people in the Caribbean “The Cultivation Sessions”. Well, that’s what I named it. Back to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The flight, including layovers is 17-24 hours from San Francisco. I have to say that it is fun but also very long with 4 border crossings, consistently getting questioned and searched at each customs meeting. Each time I get off a plane I am in another country. They want to know what I am doing and what I have. A vacation huh, what are you doing with this projector? HaHa, slide show. The first day of the Sessions began at 5:30 am Tuesday morning. We needed to open the educational center and set up the chairs. I was told I would have 30-40 students, but set up chairs for 60 just in case. It was the group’s first time opening up the dialogue with many local farmers and workers showing the people the open hearted approach to medical cannabis industry. Class began at 8:30, as we got closer to 8:30 we happened to notice there was many more attendee’s than the 60 chairs. 189 students trickle in and make it in before sign in is stopped. I was told maybe 40 people may show up for all 4 days. Almost everyone finished the course and received a certification. 181 actually. The class consisted of leaders of the Rastafari Community Loti and Mufasa that aided me in terms everyone could understand and helped with their knowledge of local cannabis cultivation on the island and practices. The other students were local farmers and people looking for other jobs such as drivers or office workers. The first day opened with an overview of the course. The Minister of Agriculture started the Cultivation Sessions with a prayer and silence for meditation followed by his ideas of the Vincentian people getting compensated for quality medical cannabis grown under strict guidelines. To understand the guidelines, I had to create a curriculum that started off very simple on day one and became advanced by day four without losing anyone somewhere in between. Two hour lecture, 45 minute break, then 2 more hours of lecture. If the class didn’t like it, I was screwed, but I managed to keep 181 people eager and learning. Each
54
person took a test at the end and had to pass with 70% or higher. The second day, I began the Cultivation Sessions with the words compassion, caring, integrity, sharing and educational unity. What do these words or actions mean to you? Why are they so important to the medical cannabis industry? This is the foundation that I was taught, the more you give the more you get back. Each day we provided a catered lunch for everyone. Salt fish is a staple as well as rice and chicken with fresh coconut water from the coconut tree on property. The guys used their machete and cleaned coconuts for whoever wanted one. Day three started with a dead battery. We had to jump start the car 4 times to get to the educational center. We made it on time. The whole class was sitting in their seats waiting patiently so we were able to just jump right into the days curriculum. The day ended with regulatory guidelines and extraction methods. Day four was the biggest learning experience I had since being on St. Vincent. We started the day with the test then went on a field trip to the Minister of Agriculture’s private farm. Everyone thought we were going to a local ganja farm. Nope, we found ourselves on a real agricultural farm. This farm had bananas, coconut, star fruit, herbs, bread fruit, water melon, papaya and many herbal remedies that locals use as medicine. I was finally seeing how many of these plants are cultivated and shared how unique of an opportunity we have to create the Nation’s standards of quality and compassion. As we walked through the garden we shared knowledge and created many new relationships. Needless to say, Chef Fred’s “Acres Agriculture Cultivation Sessions” were a hit! It is an honor to work within a community of people that have shown so much passion for cultivating the best medical cannabis in the Caribbean and trying to set standards for research. St. Vincent could become a leader in non-bias cannabis research in the future and a destination for medical patients with specific medical needs to be remedied with cannabis by a community that embraces cannabis as a medicine.

us and can relay that to YOUR customers. Dispensary owners and managers must ensure that Budtenders are equipped with the knowledge and supplies they need to do the job you expect of them. Confident employees make happy customers. And, to the Customers:
WITH ROB RUCKUS
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER So, this months Rant, well it’s directed at you ... all of you. To the Industry:
Again, Nevada has some high taxes! Not only on sales but also on the growers. Shit ain’t cheap out here, to grow, sell, or buy. (We can be thankful we didn’t get California’s 31%.) We, and I’m only speaking for myself and my co-workers are not trying to rip you off! Most of us are making a set wage and get no more, or less, no matter what we sell you. Let us know what you need. Don’t just come in barking “I need your highest THC” or “Give me the best”!
I know it’s been awhile but I guess we need a refresher course. The Budtender is your friend. We are the frontline of your business if you are a grower, producer or dispensary. We are the ones the people talk to day after day. We are the ones who gain their trust. We are the ones who recommended to a customer what he or she may need to get the desired feeling they are looking for in their cannabis or infused cannabis product. When they get what they need, they come back, and tell their friends which allows us to sell more of your products. But, the only way we can continue to recommend your product line is by continuing to be updated and informed about it..
Any Budtender worth a shit constantly studies terps and cannabinoids. The reason most of us study so much is so we can make you happy and help you find the feeling or relief you’re looking for. By doing that, we hopefully earn your trust and future business. If you are unhappy with the products you purchase, let us know so we can find items that are more suitable for you. Most of the time, if you come to one of us and just calmly explain what it is your looking for, I assure you, you’ll leave with what you need and probably at a better price than you expected.
Yes, some dispensaries have folks working there that will sell you anything just to make a sale. But, there are others that study terpenes/cannabinoids and the disease’s they help with, every single day. Some of us take this job VERY seriously. This isn’t just a job, it’s our life! Some of us (myself included) have been into cannabis healing and culture our entire lives. And in many cases, the lives of others are put into our trust.
Rob Ruckus is a Nevada medical marijuana patient, and budtender at Inyo Fine Cannabis, a long-time Las Vegas resident and cannabis activist, star of A&E's Bad Ink, musician and host of Ruckus on the Radio.
With that being said, we need to know what products are available and what each product does. The best way for that to happen (and in my case the ONLY way because I can’t lie to patients) is to make sure we get samples so we KNOW exactly how something affects
Have a great month!

IN THE KITCHEN, THEN & NOW It sits on the counter next to the cherry-red stand mixer. Though counter space is prime real estate here, it holds a place of honor and is visible from every vantage point. For deeply seated within its heavily seasoned wood, is a reverie of culinary history and the women in my family. I still can’t believe I was given ownership of this prized kitchen tool, used by her every day of her adult life. I have in my possession, the very same mortar and pestle that once belonged to my maternal grandmother, Amelia. I wrote about her in one of my blog posts a couple of years back. More specifically, I wrote about her arroz con pollo; fabulous and without comparison. I recently had a lengthy conversation with my Titi Rose, in preparation for this article. While I spent an inordinate amount of time with my grandparents growing up, I actually knew very little about the woman I wanted to focus on. Of course I knew Amelia (Nana) was an excellent cook and that she was very religious. But as Rose and I talked, I began to see Nana as more than just my grandmother. This realization came into clear view as Rose shared a story of how much attention Nana received at work one day when she showed up in her snappy, new horned-rimmed glasses and jeans with the bottoms folded up making for a deep cuff. For some reason that image of my grandmother brought into focus the layers of her personality I’d missed. What year was Nana born? I didn’t know about her siblings nor if she even had any. Where did she learn to cook as well as she did? I knew she liked to play Bingo and card games yet I didn’t know what she was most proud of. Titi had all the answers. Amelia was born 1919, in Puerto Rico, just a few months prior to the passing of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. Whether she was aware or not, my grandmother’s early years were likely not only influenced by women finally throwing their “bonnets” into the political fray, but also by the tumultuous strides women were making in other arenas. A young girl in the 1920’s Nana grew up amid Flappers, women openly smoking in public, dancing in dresses that showed their ankles and the emergence of a slightly more open attitude towards sex. Gone were those corsets and ankle length skirts. I began to wonder if those sputtered starts and stops to feminism stirred up internal conflict for young women like my grandmother. Feeling caught between what they were taught and shown by their parents versus what they were now being told and shown by the public at large. I know in the case of voting, not all women took advantage of their fought-for right. Perhaps they didn’t yet see how their vote could make a difference. I learned in some cases spouses wouldn’t allow their wives to even go to the polls or worse, women were instructed by their husbands on how to cast their precious vote. Sometime around the late-1930’s, Nana met and fell in love with a political refugee from the Dominican Republic (my grandfather), then fled with him and their two young children to the Mainland. The Bronx was their destination and where she lived among other family members who had done the same as she and Papa. New York is where they learned English, had another baby and assimilated themselves into the American way of life. As my grandmother
hunkered down on cooking, cleaning and caring for her family, things continued to progress at a rapid pace for women. Not only were female social morals and mores progressing, fashion and sought after body images were changing as well. Soft, round figures gave way to “boyish” physiques. Part of this was due to women already venturing out of the home and becoming involved in physical activities besides those household chores. Tennis, lawn bowling, and bocce ball were being added to the afternoon tea and shopping spree. This became more evident in 1943 with the creation of the AllAmerican Girls Professional Baseball League. Adding a spark to the movement of women pushing their way outside the long held belief “a woman’s place is in the home.” Nana observed all of this, and while she’s not here for me to ask, I’m sure there was some churning going on inside of her. Entrenched in her life as wife and mother, now with three children, I can’t help but think she rather enjoyed watching how the roles of women her age were advancing. The U.S’s involvement in WWII also brought about a huge shift in women’s roles. As men went off to war, women were needed in the workforce. Perhaps some felt forced, but certainly, many others welcomed the opportunity to work for employers who were not their husbands or sons. I’m not completely sure about the details leading up to it, but by the time I was born, Nana was working part time and always had. I knew she worked at a book binding factory. She had friends at work, men and women friends, which was perfectly acceptable. Surely she felt a sense of accomplishment, one that was visible, with a beginning, middle and an end, unlike so many of our “postal” household chores that never seem to end. Titi Rose told me one of Nana’s greatest sources of pride was that of being card carrying member of the Union. This meant she had her own insurance benefits and rights as a working individual. She was recognized as an important cog in a wheel that rolled paper into the warehouse then out as a book and into some unknown person’s hands. What she did was measurable, it mattered and she got paid. According to Rose, Nana’s own mother was an early version of a feminist. Not only did she run a kind of boarding house (guests didn’t come to sleep but rather to get a hot, home-cooked meal) she also owned a restaurant in Puerto Rico. Though many of her patrons were unable to pay for their food, poverty was rampant on the Island at that time it didn’t stop my great grandmother from being a pioneer among women, one of the few who worked outside the home, in addition to caring for that home, husband and children. And she was doing all this in the 1800’s! There is unanimous agreement among my elder family members, that great grandmother’s cooking was superior and apparently a talent she passed on to Nana, along with that molcajete. Just before Rose’s birth my grandparents had decided to go further west to the Golden City of San Francisco. Papa supported his family working as a self-employed cabinet maker. A mixture of artist, engineer and woodworker, he ran a rather successful little business. A very steep driveway lead down to the garage that doubled as his workshop by day and bar lounge at night. Most Friday nights morphed into impromptu block parties where several adults gathered together raising shot glasses of tequila, along with bottles of cerveza while
Salsa music blared its way to the street above. As the night wore on Papa and the men would inevitably push his tools, equipment and sawhorses out of the way, to make room for the dancing that raged long after Titi and I were put to bed. I would fall asleep to the shaking of the rhythmic maracas played by my grandfather along with Nana’s exuberant laughter, rising over all the others. The next morning things were quiet in the house. Papa would rise early, go downstairs to clean up and put in a couple hours work. Nana sat in her small kitchen and sipped coffee, percolated in their small aluminum pot. I surmise, she was not only nursing a mild hangover but also considering what to cook for the weekend. We could always count on family and a few of those friends from the night before, to stop by late Saturday afternoon. Invitations were not necessary as unexpected company was essentially expected; we always knew someone would be joining us at Nana’s table. These were my favourite days. The ritual of cooking with Nana was serious yet fun. I was cautious about making a mistake that could ruin a dish yet giddy with the freedom she gave me in the kitchen. I was allowed to select herbs and spices I thought might add flavor and interest to a dish. I was permitted to make suggestions about what to prepare for side dishes and desserts. I was given duties far beyond my years and was filled with a sense of pride at being Nana’s number one asistente de cocina (kitchen assistant). Our cooking adventures always started in the same way. After gathering all the ingredients needed to prepare dinner. Nana would begin dicing onions on her knife-scarred cutting board, then scrape them into her weathered Dutch oven. The onions sizzled as they hit the shimmering oil and melted butter. A sound that comforts me to this day. She would cook the onions just until translucent and their scent hovered over the stove, as though the vapors were looking back at the source from whence they came. I was assigned to the aromatics; fresh garlic, salt, pepper and Spanish olive oil. I started by cutting off the root end of each clove, then smash them one at a time with the side of my paring knife. As Nana’s onions cooked, I would drop the cloves of garlic into the molcajete; the same wooden mortar and pestle that now sits in my kitchen, add salt, some black pepper and a good drizzle of olive oil. I took the pestle in my right hand and holding the mortar with my left, began grinding the mixture into a paste, as both my grandmothers had done before me. When given the directive to do so, I would use my hand to scoop the mixture into Nana’s pot. The heady scent of this unctuous paste always called to me like a waffle to syrup. Though I had repeatedly been told not to do so, I would lift the wooden vessel to my nose, inhale deeply then lick the pestle. It was like licking no other lollipop I had ever tasted nor would anyone find in a candy shop. Looking back at my memories of those mornings in the kitchen with Nana, I’m struck by the contradictions of her early life. The contradictions of old and new, progress and tradition. The fact we still used that mortar and pestle instead of a mini food processor. I remember the washboard that rested on top of Nana’s new washing machine. I played it like a musical instrument as Nana hung the laundry out to dry. Her flour sack towels stared across the kitchen at
the only electric kitchen item Nana owned; a Sunbeam blender. My grandmother was a woman who had her start living in poverty on an island, learning how to cook that delicious food I so enjoyed, at her mother’s hip. Her own mother modeled independence and success running her a business. As Nana grew, she witnessed then participated in those strides women of her time were making. I understand now, why that Molcajete holds such meaning for me. It isn’t just a treasured family heirloom, it is my personal history and my future embedded in the interior walls of that wooden vessel. The women in my family had to balance family and home with business and self-assertion. They may have been exhausted, but were steadfast to find some equilibrium in the old ways with the new. Because of them, I, my daughters and my granddaughters get to choose exactly how to live our lives. While my endeavors differ somewhat from my grandmothers’ I am proud to be part of a league of women, “Puffergettes” if you will, blazing trails and making my mark in the Cannabis Industry.

If the right questions are asked by the attentive listener, you can find the root of the dream. Data, data, data, “one cannot make bricks without straw”, so when we create an event, we interview the client and ask the right questions to enable their dreams and fantasies to come to life. Any dream can be rought budget. Once our guests understand how easily attainable these fantasies are to create, the possibilities are truly endless. Our pastry chef Kareen is not only an attentive listener, but a talented artist awaiting to fulfill any desire. Here we would like to feature one of her recipes:
Strawberry Lemon Creme a la Crepe Cake Crepes
Strawberry Lemon Creme
INGREDIENTS: - 4 eggs - 2 cups buttermilk - 2 cups almond or other nut milk - 4 cups all purpose flour, sifted - 1 teaspoon salt - ½ cup granulated sugar
INGREDIENTS: - 2 cups mascarpone cheese - 3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon lemon juice - 3/4 cup powdered sugar - 2 cups heavy whipping cream - about 2 cups of washed and dried strawberries, for making 1 cup of strawberry puree - 10-12 strawberries for topping
DIRECTIONS: 1. Set the eggs aside. In a bowl, mix the rest of the crepe ingredients thoroughly, creating a smooth mixture free of lumps. 2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with a wire whisk. Incorporate completely into crepe mixture. 3. Place a 10” nonstick pan on top of the burner, with the fire set to mediumhigh heat. Drop a teaspoon of oil in the middle of the pan and use a basting brush or paper towel to spread the oil evenly on the pan, making sure no oil sits on the pan in a ‘pool’. 4. Slightly tilt the pan by the handle and pour half a cup of crepe batter into it. Quickly swirl the batter around the pan twice or so, in a circular motion, so that it coats the bottom of the pan evenly. The batter will start to cook within 2-3 seconds, so be sure to carefully swirl it around as swiftly as possible. 5. It will take about 20 seconds for the crepe to cook: it’s done when it’s dry, its edges begin to slightly lift off the pan, and appears a bit golden. 6. Flip the crepe with a spatula, then count 20 seconds more to allow the other side to cook. 7. Once done, transfer the crepe onto wax paper. Repeat steps 4 through 6, always using a square of wax paper to separate each crepe, until there’s no more batter left. Allow crepe stack to cool.
62
DIRECTIONS: 1. In a medium bowl, mix together mascarpone, lemon juice and powdered sugar. Set aside. 2. Process the heavy whipping cream using a stand or hand mixer, until soft peaks form. Fold heavy whipping cream into mascarpone mixture. Add in strawberry puree and continue to process everything on low, until everything is incorporated. PUT THEM TOGETHER: 1. On a serving dish, spread 2 full tablespoons of strawberry lemon crème on top of a single crepe. 2. Repeat previous step to form a stack or “cake” of crepes with strawberry lemon crème spread on top of each crepe. 3. Any remaining strawberry lemon crème is to be spread evenly on the topmost crepe layer; this topmost creme layer will be much thicker than the rest. 4. Form a ‘mountain’ of strawberries in the middle of the cake. 5. Chill crepe cake for half an hour. 6. Enjoy! Note: Local dispensaries offer a variety of THC oils, honey etc. that are tested & certified. 1-100mg Lemonade THC syrup can replace the sugar quantity in the crepe recipe or added to the filling. When making a whole cake, one slice (10 slices per cake) would yield approximately 10 mg THC per slice. Enjoy Responsibly.
