Last week, a friend forwarded me a Ted Talks video featuring Dr. David Casarett entitled “A Doctor’s Case for Medical Marijuana.” Dr. Casarett explained in the video that he had an elderly cancer patient who stated that she was utilizing medical cannabis because it worked, but also because it gave her control over her own health. The patient let him know that she did not have to make an appointment to walk into a dispensary to acquire her medicine and once purchased, she could dose herself as needed. After his encounter with this patient, Dr. Casarett visited a dispensary to understand the ins and outs of purchasing medical cannabis. Upon arriving at the dispensary, he experienced an opposite environment then one finds when arriving at a typical medical clinic. What he found was that the dispensary was stocked with information about the many uses of medical cannabis, the budtenders and workers took the time to speak with each patient about their needs, and the many patients there did not hesitate to communicate with each other about their medical conditions and what they were going through. He then stated that his peers within the medical community could and should learn a thing or two from the way cannabis dispensaries treat their patients. Dr. Casarett is correct. Many of the reasons that people are turning to medical cannabis is because they strive to be in charge of their own health. They are tired of visiting their physician for a quick 10 minute appointment, in an overbooked clinic only to receive prescription after prescription of pharmaceuticals. Medical cannabis is non-toxic and dosing is individualized. And, this plant offers a safe alternative for those treating pain, anxiety, and depression, amongst other ailments without the side effects that pharmaceuticals present. As we see more states legalizing cannabis, it is my hope that dispensary owners will not forget about the patients that rely on them. This movement is not just about revenue, it is about healing. If that is forgotten, our dispensaries will slowly begin to fall in line with all the things that are inefficient within mainstream medicine. As this year quickly comes to an end, let’s hope for the rescheduling or descheduling of cannabis in the coming year to allow for research and clinical trials. Happy Holidays!

“The more we learn about the entourage effect, the more important we learn terpenes are,” Josh Soule of Extracts Academy explains. “Terpenes do more than just provide the fragrance for cannabis, they are what make a strain unique, and ultimately help define the entire consumers experience. When the Remedy cultivation team harvests a room, the live plants are placed in a cryogenic freezer set to -80°C. “By freezing that plant immediately after harvest, we are able to avoid the high rate terpene loss that is experienced in the traditional drying step,” says Soule. The plant is kept at these cryogenic temperatures throughout the entire extraction process for maximum terpene preservation. During the extraction process the terpenes are separated from cannabinoids, and the cannabinoids are ultra-refined through a secondary distillation step. These terpenes and ultra-refined

>>> AWARE of indecline DS: First, tell our readers a bit about yourself and your journey to become Aware of Indecline? Aware: My parents were living in Jalisco and in the mid-eighties my family relocated to the Vegas Valley. I have been here off and on ever since. As a Latin kid growing up on the northeast side of town, I met a lot of other Latin kids my age. Many of my friends’ older brothers were into graffiti- this is how I was first exposed to unauthorized painting in public. At that time, the term “Street Art” had not been coined yet. Most of my friends were painting letters, but I always preferred to paint characters and compositions with spray paint. The alias I go by is an adaptation of a name given to me by one of the kids in the neighborhood. 'Consciente' is what I was called because of my vigilance while painting and my broad outlook on life. I claimed the shortened translation 'AWARE' mostly because it was faster to write. Eventually I co-founded Indecline in the early 2000's. Indecline is an artist collective best known for its politically dissident works. It is a group loosely comprised of artists, writers, photographers, and generally like-minded people spread out over the country.
Aware: Socio-political themes are often in my work, but not always. Sometimes my themes are subtle, sometimes just personal. I think that social and political issues are the the topics that affect us most in society, so why not create art that promotes commentary and conversation on these subjects? Whether the work is appreciated or despised, it is less relevant than the provocation of thought.
DS: How would you describe your art style? Aware: Painting on a large scale, bold work with high contrast, completed on public canvases where art would not typically be is my preference. Portraits reoccur in my work as well as social and political themes.Some of the best known projects I've conceived are the 'Wheel of Misfortune', which can be viewed by most commercial airliners headed to Mccarran International Airport from an eastbound approach. That project was done in the midst of the financial crisis and is a reflection of that. Another notable project was painted on a military runway three-fifths of a mile long, (the largest unsanctioned mural yet to be painted). This was executed with industrial paint sprayers to create text that reads 'This Land Was Our Land', a quote adapted from the famous song by Woody Guthrie. Recently, I traded my typical medium of paint for a plasma cutter to create art by cutting images out of the metal from an abandoned mill in the Mojave desert. The ambitious work resulted in a successful project called 'Death Metals'. A video of the entirety of these projects is viewable on Thisisindecline.com
DS: Who are your favorite artists, locally and worldwide? Aware: Initially, when I was coming up, I was influenced by local artists like Rukus, Omega, Facts, NME, Som, and others in PM, and OFA. These people were doing really impressive work in the early to mid-nineties. Today, I'm drawn to European artists like ECB, and Connor Harrington. However, there are so many amazing, underrated artists out there that drive me to expand my skill set and challenge myself.
DS: Are you formally trained? Aware: Aside from the direction received while attending Eldorado High School, I have not been formally trained in art. I give artists their merit based on the portfolio they produce, not the school they graduated from. DS: What inspires you? Aware: My inspiration and motivation comes from all over- from magazines, Google Earth, NPR, cityscapes, to abandoned ruins, native petroglyphs, travel and of course cannabis. People inspire me too. Surrounding myself with many talented, underrated, motivated artists out there is what I enjoy doing. DS: Do you have a message or theme in your art?

DS: What is the essence of street art? Aware: Personally, the essence of street art is not the subject of what the art is to be composed, but where it is created geographically. It is not in belief, that you can paint stencils on a canvas in your garage, and/or hang it in a gallery show, then call it ‘street art’. Street art should remain in the streets. There is something that makes a work authentic and pure when it can only be seen from a freeway or alley. It's not that I don't appreciate gallery art too, but when writers and artists risk their freedom and sometimes their lives to express themselves through unauthorized public art, the message comes across much louder and deeper.
DS: How do you consume cannabis, and what is your favorite strain? Aware: Much like art, cannabis is a form of therapy for me. Growing up with ADHD, It's difficult to imagine where I would be without either of these modes of meditation. Cannabis is a common part of the creative process. My preference is to dab rosin and distillate or include it in a pen when I'm on-the-go to initiate the creativity. I always enjoy an edible when the occasion allows, but right now, I'm really into cookie variant strains, though I do enjoy paying my homage to the heirloom genetics when I can. It's been fascinating to see the evolution of cannabis and specifically, extracts, in the past several years. DS: Where can our readers find your art? Aware: My art can be found in the streets, from Downtown to the underground, from vinyl stickers speckled throughout the city to larger works on the outskirts and even Internationally. Aware: Due to the illicit nature of some of my work, I generally don't talk about projects before they are complete. Know the history and know the rules. Know that you are looking to potentially compromise your relationships, your freedom, and your health, but sometimes it's all worth it! The fresh fir of the forest, the brightly unmistakable earthy and crisp scent of the woods, the trees. The terpene we’re celebrating this month, and every month, is beloved pinene. Not only is pinene the world’s most common and recognizable terpene, it’s also one of the most beneficial. Loaded with antiinflammatory properties, pinene offers a myriad of health perks like fighting against lung congestion and improving breathing, encouraging overall alertness and neutralizing mild THC-related memory loss. Studies show pinene to be a bronchodilator, opening up those lungs and helping combat the side effects of asthma and bronchial infections. Inhale deeply, friends- pinene is good for you! Pinene is found in pine needles (obvi), herbs like basil, rosemary and parsley, spicy orange peels, a variety of marijuana strains, and other sources such as mastic. Extracted from mastic trees, mastic is widely used in dentistry and aids in dental hygiene as it fights against tooth decay and gum disease. Reducing destructive oral bacteria which love to linger and contribute to cavities, antibacterial mastic contains up to 70% pinene. Commonly found in essential oil extracts such as eucalyptus and rosemary, this scent profile is most commonly evident in forest or tree blends. Organic Christmas candles, anyone? Perfume? than speculation. While the study conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs failed to find a significant positive impact of cannabis amongst their sample population, a new era of experimental cannabis research is emerging.
“PTSD is a disease that is mostly centered on the inability to forget,” explains Dr. Michele Ross, Ph.D.
It’s fairly common knowledge that cannabis can make you feel a little forgetful. However, research over the past decade has finally uncovered why this is true. As it turns out, the active compounds in cannabis tap into a large neurotransmitter network in the central nervous system that helps you forget. That system is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), and it responds to chemicals like those found in the cannabis plant. In healthy individuals, the human body naturally produces cannabis-like compounds called endocannabinoids. However, early evidence suggests that this system has gone awry in those with posttraumatic stress. Specifically, it is thought that patients with PTSD have some type of deficiency of endocannabinoids, which may prevent them from extinguishing fearful memories.
After a traumatic event or series of experiences, some individuals are left to relive that reality through their dreams, in their memories, and in their unconscious responses to seemingly harmless everyday encounters. “You have this and you can’t let it go, you have nightmares and it causes agitation and irritability and it causes all of these issues,” Ross says. Ross, a neuroscientist and author, believes that one vital tool for managing PTSD that is appallingly overlooked and underrated: medical cannabis. Medical cannabis has been a topic of contention among the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In 2016, a study conducted by the department found that 14.6% of veterans with PTSD sampled in their research had used cannabis within the past six months. The study included data from 719 men. Yet, the VA wasn’t hopeful about the therapeutic potential of the herb, writing: “The present findings show that cannabis use is quite prevalent among veterans seeking PTSD specialty treatment and is associated with poorer mental health and use of other substances.” Dr. Ross, however, presents a different and compelling argument. In an interview for Green Flower’s Beginner Series, Ross makes a serious case for the oft-dismissed plant. With cannabis, she explains, “you’re alleviating symptoms of anxiety and depression, you’re improving family dynamics because now there’s less drug use, or because there’s less anger, less depression, there are less issues at work, they’re not getting fired from their jobs because now they’re able to have normal interpersonal relationships.” “No matter how patients are using cannabis, even if perhaps they aren’t using the right strains or not the right products, they could be dead without cannabis,” she says. One 2013 piece published in the journal Depression and Anxiety indicates that explorations in the endocannabinoid system may pave the way for PTSD treatment that is based on real evidence about how the pathology works. In the status quo, PTSD treatment is focused more on managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood instability, and insomnia. Cannabis medicines, however, are expected to do something different. Rather than simply manage symptoms of depression and anxiety, cannabinoid medicines may target the trauma-based memories themselves. As the authors of a 2016 review published in Pharmacological Research write, “Much attention has been lately directed to cannabinoid drugs because of their dual ability to modulate memory processes for emotional experiences on one hand and to reduce anxiety on the other.” In her research, Dr. Ross has come to similar conclusions. “When you have an endocannabinoid deficiency or dysfunction, you’re no longer able to forget,” she articulates. “So, that’s why cannabis helps. It activates those cannabinoid receptors and helps you let go of those horrible memories that are keeping you up at night and are causing you not to be able to function.” Using cannabis for PTSD PTSD can affect people from all walks of life. Thus far, no large-scale research has been conducted on treatments for PTSD that integrate cannabis into a larger recovery plant. For this reason, it is always vital to work with a trusted medical professional in managing PTSD. However, some progressive medical cannabis caregivers and providers have already begun integrating the herb into patient care.

Dear Mary Jane: I am a regular reader of your column, and I really like the way that you explain things to your readers. Riddle me this: why aren’t there more cannabis-based medications available for purchase at my neighborhood pharmacy? The local dispensaries are not scary or anything like that; I just don’t know why I must get my cannabis meds at a dispensary instead of a normal drugstore. What is this, North Korea or something? My dearest Enigma: my first question for you is how many people mispronounce your name and call you Enema? You know, like the “G” was silent or something? Maybe you’re a Fleet Enigma, or maybe I’m just being silly. Your call. You ask an interesting question regarding the lack of wider availability of medical marijuana. In my part of town, you can’t swing a cat by the tail without hitting a CVS or a Walgreens (or a prostitute, for that matter). Wouldn’t things be MUCH easier if I could get my cannabis meds AND my hotflash meds (cautionary tale--menopause is a bitch) from the same damned place? Maybe this is North Korea! No, it isn’t- there is far too much neon in this town to be North Korea, and Mr. Wayne Newton is the only “fearless leader” who I choose to recognize. So there’s that. The problem is the same here in Nevada as it is in other marijuana-legal states: marijuana still remains illegal in the eyes of the Federal government, and herein lies the problem. Say an enormous biomedical firm (Bristol-Myers-Squibb, perhaps) decides that it is in their shareholders’ best interests to develop a new cannabis-based drug. For shits and giggles, let us assume that the purpose of the drug is to treat the muscle spasticity common in neurological disease. How noble! How altruistic! A drug company sees an unmet need and takes steps to address the problem; after all, stepping up in a crisis is the American way. So, you have a lab packed with eager scientists surrounded by the latest in scientific equipment...sitting around and playing Yahtzee. Why are they doing that? BECAUSE THERE IS NO CANNABIS AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH!

I know, my puzzlesome friend, this makes no sense. How are you supposed to synthesize plant matter into medicine if there is no plant matter available to work with? How surprised would you be if I told you that this is all the fault of the aforementioned Federal government? Not surprised at all? I’m sure you’re not! The G has a method of classifying drugs according to potential for abuse; there are five categories (Schedules) numbered 1 through 5 and the lower the number, the “worse” the drug (I don’t judge). Clearly, a Schedule 1 drug must be some heavy shit indeed! Here is the list of schedule 1 drugs: marijuana, heroin, LSD, Ecstasy, and magic mushrooms (psilocybin). Ironically, four of the five schedule 1 drugs listed are currently being studied by the FDA. Heroin is heroin and is the original opioid, but Ecstasy and LSD are all being explored for efficacy as treatments for depression, anxiety and PTSD. As long as marijuana remains a schedule 1 drug, things will not likely improve with this situation; as I stated earlier, it’s kinda tough to do research on a substance that remains forbidden by ‘The Man’. In the words of my brother-fromanother-mother Peter Jay (found elsewhere is this issue), the passage of time is the only thing that guarantees change. Check back in ten years.

The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers
Merry Cannab-Esq. Christmas everyone! I hope you all intend to take a few days out of your busy schedules this holiday season to spend some quality time with friends and family. Of course, if your friends and family also happen to be over the age of twentyone, what better way to spend time with them than by sharing memories, laughing, and passing around a few pre-rolls of some OG Kush or – my recent favorite – Blue Dream? And while you’re at it, be sure to lay out a spread of some edible chocolate bars, THC gummies, and some Two Roots Cannabis Beer to bring it all together! Make sure not to overdo it though; remember, although Nevada has legalized marijuana for recreational consumption, there are still possession limits in place. So be sure that there is no more than one ounce of marijuana flower per person. If you’re a family of dabbers, make sure there is no more than an eighth ounce of concentrate per person. Otherwise you risk facing hefty felony drug charges under NRS 453.336 if you’re busted in possession of an amount in excess of those numbers. Christmas being the season of giving, this seems like a good time to remind everyone once again of the laws related to “gifting” marijuana to others. As I explained last Christmas in The CannabEsq. Chronicles #4, according to Nevada law, “it is lawful […] and must not be used as the basis for prosecution or penalty by this state […] to: [. . . ] 3. Give or otherwise deliver one ounce or less of marijuana, other than concentrated marijuana, or one eighth of an ounce or less of concentrated marijuana without remuneration to a person provided that the transactionisnotadvertisedorpromotedtothepublic[.]” NRS 453D.110(3). In layman’s terms, you can legally “gift” someone up to an ounce of flower or an eighth of marijuana concentrate so long as you receive no “remuneration” – i.e. thing of value/benefit in return. Be careful with this! “Remuneration” can be very liberally construed to include many things: such as donations, trade-offs for services, etc. The moral of the story? If you are going to “give” someone weed, the only way to legally do it is to legitimately receive nothing in return. And of course, both parties of the transaction must be twenty-one. The cheer of cannabis gift-giving may be even larger and more widespread this year, as multiple states voted to approve promarijuana ballot measures in last month’s midterm elections! Michigan became the first state in the Midwest, and the tenth state across the nation (plus Washington D.C.), to legalize marijuana recreationally. North Dakota voters also had the opportunity to vote to legalize marijuana recreationally, but unfortunately the ballot measure fell short. This forces North Dakotans to wait at least a couple more years before they will be able to purchase marijuana recreationally. On the other side of

the spectrum, Missouri and Utah voters finally decided to allow marijuana for medical purposes. I still have a hard time believing that only 33 of the 50 states approve of medical marijuana. How 17 states could still be so anti-marijuana that they won’t even legalize it for medical purposes just baffles me. It shows we still have a long way to go nationally. On the federal side of things, you could hear the cannabis world collectively take a huge sigh of relief when then-Attorney General Smoke Sessions was forced to resign. Gone are the days of Smoke Sessions standing at his soapbox and preaching about the “dangers” of marijuana and how marijuana smokers are not good people. Ah, who am I kidding? I’m sure ole Smoke Sessions will continue his crusade against cannabis. The only difference now is that he doesn’t have any authority and (hopefully) not many people will be listening. Although we don’t know who is going to be tapped as the next Attorney General, I’m fairly confident they will be more open to the idea of legalized cannabis than Sessions was. And while Nevada has already been pretty marijuana-friendly and ahead-of-the-game when it comes to marijuana over the past few years, things will hopefully be even bigger and brighter in our future with Nevada’s newly-elected officials all seemingly pro-marijuana. Governor-elect Steve Sisolak has been a huge supporter of bringing legalized marijuana to Nevada, so I’m glad we will have a Governor who will look to continue strengthening Nevada’s grip on the marijuana market. While Governor Sandoval’s accomplishments in the weed category have been laudable, it is time to take another step and push that envelope even further. I think the first thing Governor-elect Sisolak needs to tackle is the issue of cannabis banking. Hopefully he, along with members of Nevada congress, will take action and make sure legislation is passed during Nevada’s upcoming 2019 legislative session to address this. In other exciting election news, the Godfather of pot in Nevada – Tick Segerblom – won his bid to the Clark County Board of County Commissioners this summer. Look for him to try and help push for and support the opening of marijuana consumption lounges within Clark County’s jurisdiction here in the very near future. Consumption lounges have been a long time coming, and it’s time to finally get the ball rolling and get these shops opened up. If anyone can do it, Tick can! Between marijuana consumption lounges, the dire need for cannabis-related banking, and other pressing marijuana-related matters, Nevada officials have their hands very full this upcoming year. Here in Las Vegas, I compare its spread throughout the city to the way mold will spread overnight on a shower curtain. Perhaps that comparison reveals a little bit more about my personal habits than might be deemed appropriate, but that is just how I roll. Like I have the time to dry a shower curtain…

Christmas is approaching, and I am always looking to buy unique gifts for my friends and loved ones. Here is some money so I don't feel guilty.” The trick to buying an effective Christmas present is to consider a person's interests and then shop accordingly. Apparently, this is more difficult than it sounds. As a personal example, I will confess that I have received every Garth Brooks CD ever released, all given to me by different people. While I'm certain that Garth Brooks is a nice guy, his music never fails to make me throw up in my mouth a little bit. I just do not get Country music. It is right up there with The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Backdoor Sluts 9 when it comes to stuff that just absolutely evades me. Don't get me wrong, I certainly appreciate the gift-giving effort, and how many bongs and pipes does any one person need? Giving somebody an eighth or a quarter is a nice thought, but I know what I like so that is what I buy. This year, I am letting everybody off the hook and sticking with intangible concepts and ideas for my Christmas wishes. Rather than things, these ideas would certainly make my life much easier.

A cure for multiple sclerosis. I don't talk about it much anymore, but it still remains a huge pain in my ass and I would be much happier without it! Failing a complete cure, there is a new medication out that I would like to try, even though it is crazy expensive. I haven't bothered my insurance people for a few years now, so hopefully they will be feeling generous. Again, I am totally worth the investment.

Federal acceptance of legalized marijuana. As I pointed out last month, if Canada can manage to get their shit together sufficiently to legalize, there is absolutely no reason that we could not do the same thing right here. As I am writing this, notorious marijuana hater “Deaf” Jeff Sessions has just been fired as U.S. Attorney General by President Trump. Hopefully his replacement will not be as big a wedgeass as Sessions was. Dispensaries deserve banking privileges too! An official Red Ryder BB gun. No, I will not shoot my eye out! I want to be recognized as the first person to reference A Christmas Story in this magazine, and to have my editor refer to me as “Ralphie” at some point or another. For Las Vegas's newest, biggest dispensary Planet 13 to evolve into the marijuana paradise that it is clearly destined to become, thereby setting the tone for future marijuana megaplexes here in town and throughout the country. It should include a dispensary section, entertainment section, and a great big smoking area. I want great big movie screens playing incredibly stupid movies 24-hours a day. I want a snack-bar with S’mores, pudding and bottomless cups of Earl Grey tea. I want a dedicated Uber station there so people do not have to drive while under the influence. I would also like to be able to bring my dogs with me. Just a thought. Some wishes might happen, some might be a bit surreal for your tastes. That is okay- it’s my fawking list! I hope that you also have your Holiday wishes come true, my dear readers. I just hope that Santa's reindeer do not poop on your lawn- apparently, Santa eats the cookies and gives the milk to his reindeer. Strong Cannabis Outcomes at U.S. Midterms:

Federal Legalization Could Be Near Though many sitting politicians have been slow to address legalizing cannabis at the federal level, we know that about six out of ten Americans (62%) say the use of marijuana should be legalized. Well, they showed up at the midterm polls this November to vote for adult-use or medical cannabis. Missouri and Utah voted to legalize medical cannabis and Michigan joined Alaska, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont and Washington in making adult-use cannabis legal. Only North Dakota failed to vote in adult-use cannabis, though medical cannabis is still legal there. In addition to this, new pro-legalization governors in Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, New Mexico, Wisconsin, California, Colorado, Maine, Nevada and New York are likely to sign cannabis bills into law and/or defend local laws from federal interference.
Legalizing cannabis federally would open economic markets, decrease cannabis possession incarcerations, and infuse the country with money. How it is legalized (descheduling is preferred) would also present a whole new set of regulations to consider. For now, we can revel in the recent wins and encourage representatives to take positive steps toward cannabis legalization across the nation.
Representative Pete Sessions (R-TX) lost his re-election bid to Colin Allred (D). This is noteworthy because Sessions, who was chairman of the House Rules Committee, blocked every proposed cannabis amendment from reaching a Congressional floor vote. His absence together with Democrats (who are more likely to support cannabis reform) making up the majority of Congress, increased the chances of ending cannabis prohibition at the federal level. Incoming House Rules Committee Chair Representative Jim McGovern (D-MA) says he will permit federal lawmakers to debate and vote on cannabisrelated amendments when he assumes his role in 2019.

Further, the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions was like a cherry on top of the successful midterms for cannabis advocates. Sessions, one of the staunchest opponents of cannabis legalization, vowed to roll back Obama era policies that relaxed federal regulation of cannabis. He also targeted the 2013 Cole Memo which directed prosecutors to not enforce the federal ban in states where cannabis was already legal, and had been quoted saying “good people don’t smoke marijuana” and that he thought members of the Ku Klux Klan were “OK, until I learned they smoked pot.” Soon after his announcement, cannabis stocks jumped significantly. In fact, the entire marijuana index was up 13.73% less than two hours after Sessions stepped down from his position.

The total number of states where cannabis is legal in some form (adult-use or medical) rose to 33 with the addition of Michigan, Missouri and Utah. In addition to this, 2018 presented other significant cannabis wins. California opened the world’s biggest legal cannabis market, Vermont legalized cannabis possession (the first state to do so through legislation), and our northern neighbor Canada became the world’s first wealthy nation to fully legalize cannabis.

Such momentum could signal that it’s time to legalize cannabis federally. Trump has said he supports pending legislation that would respect states’ rights to implement their own cannabis laws. Should Democrats pass that bill or similar House bills, the President’s support could be enough to pass it through the Senate.

Battling Cancer, One Family at a Time was without hesitation, when my very good friend Sindone told me about her son Dominic and his diagnosis, that they would be the first family we provided assistance to. Dominic Horowitz is a 4 year old Jedi Warrior currently fighting AT/RT, a rare type of brain cancer, that affects the central nervous system. The family made a Facebook page to keep his army of supporters (#DomsArmy) updated throughout his battle, and to chronicle his progress in kicking cancer's butt! Dan and the Lion’s Den hosts events every couple months to raise funds for the family! It has been a little over a year since the world lost one of the greatest humans ever. Daniel David Nitchie passed away in September 2017 from stage four colorectal cancer. He was the best son, husband, brother, friend, and step-dad anyone could ask for. Dan’s diagnosis came in April 2014 and shortly thereafter he underwent his first surgery to remove a portion of his colon. Eight months later, after a second surgery along with chemotherapy, Dan was able to gain back enough strength to work, travel and even enjoy some hiking. Then, in July 2017, Dan ended up in the emergency room and it wasn’t long after that he decided to discontinue the chemotherapy and pursue a more natural route of care. My mother and I supported his decisions every step of the way and on September 29, 2017, Daniel passed away with my mother and I by his side, in the home that they shared, with their beloved dog, on their terms. It was on my stepfather’s behalf, that my mother Deidre Nitchie and I started Dan and the Lion’s Den, which is 501c3 charity. Our sole mission is to assist families in financial need through the process of dealing with cancer and cancer treatments. By assisting families with the financial undertaking that they are faced with, we can allow them to remain focused on healing. It

Given the widespread use of medical cannabis, it’s important for physicians and patients to understand how THC, CBD, and other cannabis components interact with many commonly used pharmaceuticals—not only to anticipate and avoid problematic outcomes, but also to take advantage of situations where cannabis and pharmaceuticals can interact in a positive way.
roject CBD, a California-based educational non-profit, has published an in-depth primer on Cannabinoid-Drug Interactions for health professionals, patients, and public policymakers. The 33-page report, summarized here, is available for free download at projectcbd.org.
Drug interactions are a significant consideration in modern medicine. More than half of U.S. adults regularly take prescription meds and at least 75 percent of Americans take at least one over-the-counter drug. Many people, including most seniors (the fastest growing demographic of cannabis users), take multiple drugs, and these compounds can interact and affect the metabolism of each other. Cannabis is one of the most widely consumed substances in the United States and throughout the world, and a huge number of cannabis users also consume pharmaceutical products. Given the increasing acceptance and prevalence of cannabis as a therapeutic option, it’s important for physicians and patients to understand how various cannabis components, including cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major phytocannabinoids, may interact with commonly consumed pharmaceuticals. But pertinent information about cannabinoid-drug interactions is difficult to obtain because of marijuana prohibition and consequent restrictions on clinically relevant research. Hence the need for Project CBD’s primer, which was written not only to help health professionals and patients anticipate and avoid problematic outcomes but also to take advantage of situations where cannabis and pharmaceuticals can act synergistically in a positive way.
A COMPLICATED ISSUE
“It’s a complicated issue,” says research chemist Adrian Devitt-Lee, the author of the Project CBD primer. “Although drug interactions are rarely so dangerous as to entirely preclude the use of a medication, they can have serious impacts on a patient’s treatment and wellbeing.”

The Project CBD primer includes a discussion of various “substrates” or drugs that are metabolized by cytochrome P450, a large family of non-specific enzymes that are involved in breaking down an estimated 60 to 80 percent of all pharmaceuticals. Cytochrome
P450 enzymes may be inhibited or amplified by CBD, THC and other plant cannabinoids, thereby reducing or prolonging the activity of another drug. By suppressing or inducing specific cytochrome P450 enzymes, CBD and THC can alter how one metabolizes a wide range of substances. Much depends on the particular substrate involved in the drug interaction. Some pharmaceuticals, known as “prodrugs,” don’t become functional until they are metabolized into an active component. If CBD or THC inhibits the breakdown of a prodrug, the latter will remain inactive – whereas inhibiting the metabolism of a regular drug will result in higher blood levels of the active substance. Several variables make precise predictions about drug interactions difficult, even for practiced physicians. “It is much easier to assess whether drug interactions are likely than to predict their exact affect,” the Project CBD primer asserts.
THE CBD PARADOX
Thus far, based on observations regarding the widespread use of raw cannabis flower and full-spectrum cannabis oil, it does not appear that there have been many problems because of cannabinoid-drug interactions. The clinical use of Sativex (a 1:1 CBD:THC sublingual tincture) and Marinol (a pure, synthetic THC pill) has resulted in few, if any, reported adverse events attributable specifically to interactions with pharmaceuticals. To the extent that there have been problematic drug interactions with cannabinoids, these have involved high doses of nearly pure CBD isolates, not cannabis in general. Even though THC is an intoxicant and CBD is not, the fact that people tend to use much higher doses of pure CBD makes it a much riskier player in metabolic drug interactions. Consider the numbers: Ten milligrams of THC in a cannabis product is a hefty dose for a naïve patient and sufficiently psychoactive for the occasional recreational user. Ten mgs of THC combined with an equal amount of CBD in a Sativex tincture hit the analgesic sweet spot in clinical trials. These are moderate doses compared to the amount of single-molecule CBD administered to epileptic children in clinical trials – up to 50 mg per kilogram – with CBD doses as high as 2000 mg not uncommon among patients who obtain CBD isolates from internet storefronts and other unregulated sources.

THE LATEST THC has its own built-in guard rails – consume too much and you’ll know you’ve hit your limit. With CBD, there are no guard rails, no dysphoric feedback loop that says you’ve had enough. CBD is intrinsically safe, but when extracted from the plant and concentrated as an isolate, high doses are necessary for therapeutic efficacy – unlike whole plant CBD-rich extracts, which have a broader therapeutic window and are effective at lower doses than singlemolecule CBD. Drug interactions are much more likely with high dose CBD therapy than other forms of cannabis consumption. Physicians and patients should be concerned about this, given that the current regulatory regime privileges CBD isolates over artisanal, plant-derived, multicomponent formulations.
MODE & SEQUENCE OF ADMINISTRATION
The way cannabinoids are administered (smoking, eating, etc.) also has a major impact on whether or not drug interactions occur. Interactions are far more likely when both drugs are taken orally and processed by the liver before being distributed through the body. Cannabinoids are absorbed more if ingested on a full stomach. Ingested cannabinoids will have higher peak liver concentrations than inhaled cannabinoids, so ingested cannabinoids should have more potent drug interactions. The Project CBD primer notes that the sequence as well as the route of administering cannabidiol can influence how another drug is metabolized. One study disclosed that CBD has a stronger inhibitory impact on a particular cytochrome P450 enzyme if it’s administered 20 minutes before the second drug.
CBD also interacts with THC. By taking CBD and THC together, individuals may find that the effects of THC are tempered but prolonged slightly. It is known that 11-OH-THC, a THC breakdown component, is more potent than THC at the CB1 cannabinoid receptor, which mediates psychoactivity. 11-COOH-THC, another THC metabolite, has anti-inflammatory effects without causing a high. Some people can hardly tolerate any THC. The wide range of reactions to THC-rich cannabis may be influenced by genetic factors. A common polymorphism (or variant) of a gene that encodes a particular cytochrome P450 enzyme alters how one metabolizes THC so it breaks down more slowly and stays active longer, resulting in hypersensitivity to THC’s psychoactive effects. That may be one of the reasons why some people find THC-rich cannabis to be unpleasant, while hundreds of millions smoke it to relax. This genetic variant exists among 20% in European and Middle Eastern populations, meaning one in five Caucasians are THC-averse. Less than 10% of Africans have this genetic variant and among Asians it’s less than 5%.
POSITIVE SYNERGIES
Other noteworthy findings in the Project CBD primer: • THC v. lung cancer. When cannabis is smoked, cytochrome P450 enzymes in the lungs convert inhaled ash into potent carcinogens, including highly toxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). But THC may protect against lung cancer by inhibiting the same metabolic enzymes that PAHs induce.

• Cannabinoid-opiate interactions. Supplementing an opioid-based pain-management regimen with cannabis could result in lower doses of opioids required for adequate analgesia. Lower doses of opioids will reduce the number of overdose deaths. This is an example of a potentially beneficial cannabinoid-drug interaction. • CBD, THC and chemotherapy: Limited preclinical research indicates that administering CBD and/or THC in conjunction with first-line chemotherapy drugs could potentiate the latter, thereby reducing the dosage of highly toxic chemo necessary to treat the cancer. If this translates to human experience, it would be a huge benefit. But if pure CBD delays chemo metabolism, dangerously high levels of a toxic drug could accumulate unless the dose of chemotherapy is reduced and properly managed. The fact that cannabinoids make radiation and chemotherapy both more tolerable and seemingly more effective is an area worth studying.

• Blood thinners: Both THC and CBD delay the metabolism of Warfarin, a widely prescribed blood thinner. Misdosing Warfarin causes tens of thousands of ER visits every year because of excessive bleeding. The Project CBD primer reviews a recent case study as an example of how physicians can successfully adjust the dose of warfarin for a patient who is also taking a CBD isolate.
RESEARCH BARRIERS
The information presented in the Project CBD primer is intended to help doctors and patients understand if and when drug interactions with cannabis or cannabinoids are likely. “It is not meant to stoke fears about drug interactions or add to decades of ill-advised, antimarijuana hysteria,” the author emphasizes. How dangerous are cannabinoid-drug interactions? As dangerous as misdosing the other drug(s) that a patient is taking. Problems are more likely to arise when a patient combines a high dose of an otherwise benign CBD isolate with a pharmaceutical that has a very narrow window between its therapeutic and toxic levels. In GW Pharmaceuticals’ clinical trials of Epidiolex, an almost pure CBD compound, there were potentially dangerous interactions with Clobazam, an anti-epileptic drug, which necessitated a dosage adjustment of the latter. The FDA recently approved Epidiolex as a medication for children with refractory seizure disorders. And the DEA classified Epidiolex as a schedule V substance in September 2018. Epidiolex would surely command a lot of “off label” attention if not for the potent price tag. And just as surely a huge unregulated market for hemp-derived CBD isolates will continue to flourish in a tenuous legal environment. An already massive consumer demand for CBD products has far outpaced the gathering of clinical data on cannabinoid interactions with pharmaceuticals for pain, cancer, autism, heart disease and many other chronic ailments. The longstanding barrier to requisite research is the Schedule 1 status of cannabis, a category reserved for dangerous substances with no medical value, according to federal law. But the paucity of federally sanctioned clinical research, a consequence of cannabis prohibition, should not be an excuse for physicians or patients to shun nonlethal cannabinoid therapies, which show promise for a wide range of conditions.

he enters the kitchen wearing her “uniform” of yellow crocks, faded overalls, and frayed tie-dyed apron. A makeshift carrier, outfitted from the skirt of her apron, is as burdened as a packsaddle, overflowing with carrots, beets, apples and butternut squash. I hurry from my spot at the kitchen sink to help unload the bountiful harvest onto the gingham tablecloth covering a deeply etched farm table. Grandpa made the table himself, when dad was just a toddler, from a fallen-down maple tree on their property. Once everything is spread across the table, she immediately leans over to kiss her husband. Some mistletoe hangs from a piece of kitchen twine tied to the ceiling fan above. He has been sitting at the table stringing rosaries for their church while I tended to

my task. Grandpa’s rosaries are highly sought after. They’re unusual in that they are strung in rainbow coloured beads. Waves of love and envy wash over me as I watch the exchange between my grandparents. Gram kisses him smack on the lips, Grandpa’s face beaming like a nineteen year old. The tendrils of hair that framed her face when she entered the kitchen now fall freely tickling his forehead. Both are gray and wrinkled, yet age doesn’t appear to have diminished their attraction for one another. It’s an endearing sight. I arrived earlier this morning just as they were finishing their oatmeal, listening to Christmas carols. Afterward, Gram went to her garden and I ventured to the area where my grandparents grow their hundred or so Cannabis plants. Last week, Gram asked me to come help her start some new seedlings and clone a few plants. Afterward she wanted us to prepare a lunch of Butternut-Apple and Cheddar Soup. It’s one of our favourites. Slowly bringing herself back upright, Gram turns to give me a kiss on the cheek accompanied by one of her famous bear-hugs. She still has the strength of wrestler. Together we begin what we refer to as “Canna-mani-pedi” time. We first focus our attention on the new seeds Gram had ordered, setting up individual germination plates. The plates are lined with damp paper towels where two or three seeds are set upon each plate. The seeds are then loosely covered with the ends of the towel. The plates are placed in a cupboard in the hallway. While Gram was in her garden earlier, I was busy collecting clones. I used only clean razors to take cuttings from the lower branches, as she taught me. Yesterday, Gram tied yellow ribbons on the plants that hadn’t received any fertilizer in several days in addition to setting up a small bucket of water. This I used to immediately plunge the newly cut clones. Now we are busy clipping off any remaining leaves, then dip the stems of our cuttings into another bucket filled with a hormone solution. Each clone is secured into its own Rockwool cube and is set in a small pot of clean soil. Lastly we carry them to their new home in her grow tent. Clapping our hands in satisfaction, Gram announces it’s time we make that soup. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I’m not sure if my eyes are open or shut. The darkness is dense and the silence penetrating. Do I even have eyes? I know I am

THE STORY surrounded by loose, well-aerated loam. Though I am only a few inches below the surface, I am completely enveloped. In the beginning there were delicate sprays of tepid water coming through some sort of covering. I was then relocated to a larger container. In this vessel I received heavier doses of water along with food in the form of liquid nutrients. The one small tail I sprouted during germination began to grow exceedingly longer. Now there are more, even longer tails. These are my roots. When I conjure up the image of my roots I see the color red. My husk, before it broke, was a brownish red. I’m not sure how I know this, but red is the color associated with the First chakra. It is where all living things connect themselves to the earth. Only with a healthy root system can we hold strong and firm in our existence. And yet, such a root system allows us to yield to outside forces. It is within this red chakra we gather strength to weather difficulties and strife without toppling over or breaking. As my root system developed more fully, I began to detect light above. This was exciting to me- from darkness to light. Doing my best to reach and extend myself upwards I was able to break through the topsoil. Days later, a couple of small leaves emerged. In the crux between the delicate foliage were pistils, indicating I am female. I sensed other plants of similar size around me. Some sported pistils a few had pollen sacs – males. We joyfully reside together in some kind of enclosure; warming ourselves beneath brightly colored lights for several hours followed by fewer hours in that familiar darkness. This stage of my development seems to coincide with the energy of the Second chakra or Sacral chakra. This energy force is orange in color, influencing creativity and sexuality. Hence my preoccupation with pistils and pollen sacs, not to mention my increased interest in the artistic expression of my companions’ growth as well as my own. This is a rather pleasant stage to be in. I spent several weeks of enjoyment in my orange phase, but things soon became more exciting. All the males had been relocated. Few of us girls understood why or where for certain. One of the females communicated something about our seed production reducing when males are absent. Apparently the less seeds us girls have, the better. I am saddened about not sensing my male counterparts but those tickly sensations I experienced when they were here have subsided. Instead, I feel a more pronounced need to focus on my own personal growth. I am now almost two feet tall. I’ve been harnessing my energy within instead of showing off for the boys, and as a result, have expanded my foliage. My once delicate stalk is thicker and curvier. These days, I sense the color yellow, in accordance with the Third chakra- the Solar Plexus chakra. This is the area where my digestive system, physical strength and ability to transform the water, light and nutrients I am provided with into usable sources of food. It has been more than ten weeks and my growth is stunning! I’m now in my flowering stage and I’m feeling the love. I’ve practically
doubled in height and wear several buds that are beginning to expand and flatten. During this “stretch” phase of my development, we’ve incorporated a regimen of exercise. Periodically, my larger stems and branches are bent and I’m moved about within our enclosure. This aides in creating a canopy to maximize my yield. This is all lovingly done by she who cares for us and is in conjunction with the Fourth (or Heart) chakra. Like the energy source within the human heart, I am filled with a sense of harmony, peace and love. We all feel it. Unconditional love abounds amid our sorority of feminized plants. Our now white pistils practically stand at attention, creating a lovely contrast to our now dark green leaves. Green is the color of this chakra. Some of the girls are beginning to act a bit finicky about temperature and space between themselves and the rest of us. We all understand these emotions are natural responses as we strive to be, not only visually pleasing, but rich in THC. Our leaves and branches are like hands and arms tenderly caressing those we come into contact with. Another several weeks has passed and I, along with my sisters, stand strong. We are nearly as tall as she on two legs who comes to tend to us. The other day some of my leaves tickled her neck as I am equal in height to her Blue chakra- the Throat chakra. This is the area where communication is housed. In this stage I more clearly express my needs and desires. Like the energy source of the two legged’s Blue chakra, I am able to participate in balancing my innerself with my outer-self. As a collective group of living, breathing plants we all synthesize our ability to heal, transform and purify intrusions or illnesses from outside forces. We are inching closer to our Higher Purpose. What exactly is my Higher Purpose? How do I sense I even have one? Yet, I know I do. It is this inner knowing that brings me into alignment with the essence of the Sixth chakra or Third Eye, expressed in the shade of indigo. The manifestation of our visions, wisdom and intuition is found in this energy source. Our dreams for the future and recollections of past lives are held in the Sixth chakra. Now I see I have been cultivated to heal. There has been far more light than darkness in recent weeks. Now among the tallest and strongest of the females, I am heavily laden with trichomes that sparkle like grains of white sand on a Caribbean beach. White, the color of the Seventh chakra or Crown chakra, is located at the very top of the head. Associated with the cerebral cortex, it is here where understanding, acceptance and bliss are obtained. This is the place where one realizes their connection to God and the energies of the Universe. This is the chakra of Divine Purpose and Personal Destiny. This is where all the colors, of all the other energy sources, come together as one. It is here we make sense of who we are and why we’re here. We are no longer living in that rich, aerated loam. We now hang, inverted within a dark, dry place. I am drying out. No water, no light. Is this how I am to end? I thought I knew my purpose, but now I am confused. I sense fear.

Finally, we are freed from that dark place. My sun leaves have carefully been separated from my limbs. My buds have tenderly been removed. My stems have all been discarded. My roots, removed, rinsed and further dried. But my essence remains intact. Though dismembered, almost every part of me will be utilized. My tangle of roots are earmarked for use as a healing balm. My leaves

WinterApple-Butternut-CheddarSoup Ingredients 6 Tbsp Canna-butter 3 Tbsp AP flour 1 medium onion – diced 1 medium apple - diced 1 large russet potato – diced 1 butternut squash – roasted, skinned, cubed * salt/pepper to taste 2 cups infused vegetable or chicken broth 1 ½ cups apple beer 1 ½ cups grated cheddar 1 cup Jarlesberg or Monterey Jack cheese – grated 4-6 slices bacon – cooked & crumbled Pinch nutmeg, chopped chives, sour cream – for garnish Process Melt butter in large, heavy saucepot over medium low heat. Whisk in flour, stirring constantly for about 5 minutes, until roux turns a pale blond color. Stir in onion and cook until fragrant. Add potato, apples, and squash, cooking until soft. Season mixture with salt and pepper. Add broth and beer, heating through. Add cheeses in 2 batches, stirring constantly to ensure cheese doesn’t stick to bottom of pot. Season to taste. Ladle into blender and puree until smooth. Serve in individual bowls topped with bacon bits, nutmeg, chives and sour cream. *To Roast Butternut: place halved, cleaned squash on parchment lined sheet pan. Drizzle with infused olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast in 425 degree oven until squash is tender but not mushy. Allow to cool and remove rind. Cut squash pulp into medium diced pieces. hether it’s a mob of emus, a 20foot tall giraffe, desert turtles, a pride of lions or the burgeoning cannabis industry- what all these things have in common is the need for proper education. 44-year Vegas veteran, Keith Evans of the Lion Habitat Ranch sat down with Vegas Cannabis Magazine to talk about his nonprofit animal habitat, the mercurial Las Vegas climate, and why a lion retreat would make an excellent grow spot. Let’s back up: Since 2012, Keith Evans, President of the Lion Habitat Ranch (located at 382 Bruner Ave, Henderson, NV 89044) has made it his business to educate everyone who passes through his gates about the preservation, maintenance and safety skills required to work with exotic animals. With his tenure in Nevada as an animal trainer and designer of some of history’s most well-known lion exhibits, Evans has his sights set on growing cannabis at the habitat. Evans expands on his history and experience, his triumphs and struggles and how cannabis may ultimately save the day. VCM: First, tell us your story… how long you’ve been here, etc. KE: I’ve been in this house (located at the habitat) since 1989. I’ve been in Las Vegas

since 1974. It’s a much different climate today than in the past. Obviously, cannabis was illegal when I moved here- now it’s legal. Big cats were fine, now they’re starting to become illegal. It’s a huge transition of two things that I used to enjoy. VCM: Did you work with the lions previous to operating the ranch? KE: Yes, I’ve worked with them since 1970. In shows, we took over the MGM Lion in 1984…we were up in Reno for a bit, then back to the Strip again we were at the corner of Trop and Las Vegas Boulevard in a tent taking photos. After the new MGM was built, even though we were promised an indoor and outdoor operation, the new President of the casino decided he didn’t want any live animals. So at that point, we were out of work and really ticked off about it. Along came Mutual of Omaha in 1996 and asked us to work for Jim Fowler. We had 2 eight-monthold lionesses and Jim got to go onstage with them, and soon after, someone suggested, ‘hey, we should have live lions here!’ …After many plan changes over time with the theme park and designs, they ultimately moved us into the hotel and into the habitat in 1999, where we remained until 2012. We then opened up as a nonprofit in 2014. It’s been a lot of transition over the years. VCM: Were all of your older cats born at MGM? KE: Anything born before 2012
were birthed at the MGM. We have a full house here, typical days start at 6 a.m. everyday with the crew, we clean the cages and hand-feed the cats, the giraffe and birds, and then we open up to the public 4 days a week for 4 hours each day. We try to spread our budget as far as it will go. VCM: Do you work with volunteers? KE: We work with staff and volunteers, it’s a specific type of job. Ours are well trained and orientated to the facility… it’s hard to be a volunteer in 110-degree heat! We appreciate every one of them. VCM: For sure! So, who are your typical visitors to the habitat?
KE: Actually, it’s mostly women between 30-50! And of course, kids. School fieldtrips, birthday parties… we see almost 1,000 kids a month here. It’s all about education and they love it. We also rent out parts of the facility for corporate events as well…it’s hard because the county tends to micromanage a lot of things, just like in the pot business. We can’t do this or that… it’s hard. So we do what we can. We’ve absorbed a lot of misplaced animals as well from Vegas zoos that have closed, trying to place them responsibly. VCM: Exactly, and the more they ‘regulate’ it, the more the black market opens up. Do you have donors? KE: We’re non-profit now, we survive on donations. I’ve gotten

personal loans to help us survive…it’s not easy, we’re just hanging in there. So when the (cannabis) licenses started coming out, I wanted to get a grow license. We’re fairly isolated and very secure here, so it makes sense. If you know anyone who is looking for a grow location… we figure that would help support us here. VCM: You never know, you may find someone who’s interested in growing! KE: It’s crazy, the transition. What was legal once, is now frowned upon. I mean, I got busted in 1970 by a family member… turned me in for smoking! And here we are, years later, I mean, I would have gone to jail! And now, it’s totally legal VCM: So, what do you see here for your future? KE: Well we’re still here, working. It’s a neverending 7-day a week job. Unexpected expenses, normal maintenance to keep the cats and animals surviving. VCM: How many cats do you have here? How long do they live? KE: We have 35 cats now. They live 15-20 years. In the wild, more like 7-10 years. With all the trophy hunting in the wild, it’s crazy. People say, ‘I don’t like to see the animals behind fences’… but African researchers say, ‘the only way you’re ever going to protect these creatures is to put up fences’. So that’s what we’re doing. It’s ridiculous how

self-serving these county regulators are… with all the laws and problems… we’ve had to give up animals, a female giraffe for example, because they didn’t want us breeding. It’s like, with all the attention that that giraffe got in New York earlier this year, you don’t think it would be good to bring that kind of attention here to the Las Vegas habitat? But they don’t want it, they don’t understand it. They’re so selfserving. VCM: …and very uneducated, too. We’ve seen this in the cannabis industry as well. When we would witness some of the licensing and zoning meetings, some of these folks would ask the most out-there questions! It’s like, go do your research, go see what’s going on before you make these rules! Etiquette for the Holidays
‘Tis the season for bongs, pipes, and dab rigs to be cleaned, packed in pillowcases, and schlepped with all the accoutrements to family and friend’s homes for the holidays. If your partaking plan is to hide away in Aunt Ida’s basement, or huddle in your mom’s bathroom billowing smoke out of the small window, you may want to think about investing in a vaporizer or a vape pen. The holidays are stressful enough without being caught out in the garage with your five-foot-tall bong fully lit by your six-year-old-nephew. Aside from hiding your recreating from the family, cannabis patients have a tougher battle of medicating regularly in unfamiliar settings. It isn’t just a matter of replacing the herb with a beer or a glass of wine for this single occasion – cannabis patients must medicate often, and in many ways, just to feel alright. Believe me, it’s not an option to do without your medicine. It would be like leaving the Vicodin at home after hip surgery. Below is a short list of tips and niceties that may help you and your host prepare for a happy and healthful holiday visit. No matter how heavily medicated you need to be to get through a dinner with Uncle Ed, no one need be the wiser. Never arrive empty handed. If your host medicates, a suitable host gift is appropriate. If you are handy in the kitchen, apothecary items such as infused honey or a batch of medible cookies, are never a bad idea. Make sure the gift is in

a sturdy and safely kid-proofed container that is properly labeled as to THC activation, content, and suggested dosing. Never expect your host to provide. Always come to the tribal toke table with offerings of flower, hash, or dabs if you know your host partakes. Bring the offering in an attractive stash jar as part of the gift. If you are aware they like dabs, but know they don’t have a rig, bringing yours over is always a special treat. Leave the protest signs at home. Unless you are a family who marches together, leave your slogans at home. Historically, the holiday table is no place for politics. Getting through the graphic description of Uncle Ed’s yearly prostate exam, or your mom’s latest quest from online dating, should be enough table talk for one family session. Identifying an education moment. Politics aside, if you are asked about your medicating habits or cannabis as medicine, feel free to share and enlighten. Just don’t bring out the soapbox and linger on the subject too long. Everyone loves knowledge, no one likes a pot-obsessed zealot bent on forcing an issue. They came for the festivities and food, not a lecture. Be Polite in Your Partaking. If your host isn’t a patient, doesn’t partake, and doesn’t care to, then packing for a discreet session is in order. Here’s a checklist of handy helpers to get you through: Ingest rather than inhale. Ingesting lasts longer than merely smoking or vaping
flower. Smoke after ingesting, and the effects are enhanced. Ingest regularly in low doses, and keep that overall sense of well-being for a longer amount of time. Pack hard candies or tincture at 10 milligram doses each, increasing your dose, as needed, without overdoing it. And remember, since cannabis is an enhancer, easy on the alcohol, as the weed will increase the efficacy. There’s nothing more irresponsible than someone bringing in a batch of pot brownies to a party where people are already drinking alcohol. Out-of-body experiences have been reported, with no good time had by anyone. Replace traditional holiday cocktails with infused alcohol. Infusing alcohol with cannabis and other flavorful herbs and spices can turn a damaging drink into a beneficial tonic. Cannabis is an anti-inflammatory and fights infection and negative symptoms from alcoholcausing hangovers via headache and flu-like symptoms. Have vaporizer, will travel. Sometimes it’s just not possible to set up a vape box or volcano in the guest room, unless you have permission; so, a vape pen remains an easy choice for most patients. There are pens that vape flower, or simple, replaceable smoking oil cartridges with rechargeable cartridge pens. Vaporizing means no carbon, no smoke, no odor – with no one the wiser. Roll enough joints to get you through it. If a vape pen isn’t in your budget, then bringing joints or a pipe with flower will suffice. Checklist: flower in an airtight container, grinder, pipe or papers, small ashtray, small tray or box to keep it all tidy. A tidy guest is a good guest. Always clean up after yourself, including the shake. And if you clean your smoking piece in the sink, scrub it afterwards. This writer has medicated at two in the morning outside in the snow in Colorado, huddled in a shed in a rainstorm in Oregon, and stood on enough hotel toilet seats, blowing smoke into a ceiling fan to know- where’s there’s a will, there’s a way. And remember to save a few doobies for the ride home.

That was my first back to being an independent artist release. Hopper: That’s freedom!
There are a lot of celebrities who like to smoke weed, but there aren’t many who have a true love and respect for the cannabis plant. Big Smo definitely walks the walk, especially when it comes to cannabis. He recently cruised up to the garden, ready to get his hands dirty and learn everything about growing and harvesting. He even hit up the trim room and picked up the scissors for a bit before we sat down for a chat and a sesh. I mean, like overwhelmingly beautiful! Hopper: So what brings you out to Cali? Smo: Just trying to get a higher education in the cannabis industry. I’m out here doin’ a couple of
Smo: Yeah actually, my label is called Freedom Records. I’m still working with one of the producers I was working with prior to leaving Warner Brothers. The vibe of Special Reserve resonates from the previous album, We The People. You can kinda put those two albums together, and treat them like Side A and Side B. So I’m still pushing those, they really define who I am today. My music ten years ago doesn’t really define who I am today. It’s a better representation of the present Smo, so to say. Hopper: A lot of people know you from your TV show, as well as your music. Which do you prefer, the studio and the stage, or the lights and the cameras? Smo: Definitely the studio
and the stage, but the lights and cameras are still a part of it. Not so much for television, but for content. We’ve always been a content driven entity. I started out producing, directing, and filming my own music videos which have gotten, I think “Kickin’ It In Tennessee” might have 15 or 17 million views now, and that’s a video I shot in my backyard with a Handycam. From starting out there to building out an 18 episode series on Youtube, before the tv show. We were filming our own show before the tv show. So it’s always been a content driven brand. I’ve always been in front of the camera. Hopper: So it comes pretty naturally to you. Smo: Yeah, just overall entertaining and understanding what people are looking for when they’re looking to be entertained. You gotta know how to pull on people’s heart strings and play with their funny bone, and I’ve always been kinda blessed with the ability to read people and understand what it is they need from me to make them happy. Hopper: Let’s get into the good stuff now…weed! Smo: Yeah! Indeed for the weed. Hopper: A friend in weed is a friend indeed. Smo: And a friend indeed, I am! This isn’t something new to me. You can go back to my very first release,

or way further back to the age of 12 when I had my first experience with cannabis. My relationship with cannabis goes back to preteen, when I was introduced by my brother. From that point on, it was a part of my life. Hopper: It defines you in a way. Like I say, I’m proud to be a stoner. Smo: Yeah, it’s never been something I’m ashamed of. It’s something I’ve always been cautious of, because of the legalities and geographically where I’m located, it’s still kinda frowned upon on the state and federal level. Hopper: I think that what you’re doing, being outspoken about cannabis in your genre is really helping other people be open about it. Smo: The more it becomes medically and even recreationally accepted, you’ll have a whole lifestyle that’s spawning off of this national acceptance. You know what I’m sayin’? It’s like all of a sudden it’s okay to be a stoner. That’s gonna spark a whole new lifestyle for the entire country, not having to be ashamed or legally in danger. I believe this is something you’re going to see grow, and it’s good to be one of the guys that was on the forefront of the movement. When I was doing my television show, I was attending NORML meetings in Nashville, and I’ve always been a very active speaker on behalf of cannabis. Luckily, I have the opportunity to continue to be, in some much bigger avenues and facets moving
forward, which takes me back to why I’m in California. The Big Smo brand has looked into expanding into the cannabis industry and we’re getting ready to launch our new brand, American Stoner. Hopper: There it is! I was gonna ask if we could get a preview. I love that… American Stoner! Smo: That’s the future, as far as my involvement, in the cannabis industry. We’ve got some great ideas already in the works. Hopper: I don’t want to let too much out of the bag, but yes… Smo: You know we’ve got some things in the works. I’ve got a stoner comedy movie that I’ve written probably ten years ago that I’m finally bringing out and dusting off. It’s gonna be a great opportunity to drop in some new music. It’s gonna also help bring the brand into the cannabis industry as well. Nothing helps move into a new industry like music and entertainment, so we’re gonna use the Big Smo brand to let America know it’s okay to embrace God’s gift. I think there’s gonna be a lot of people, who once they tear the wall down on cannabis prohibition, we’ll see a lot of people that are gonna get involved in the industry. That’s a great thing. There are a lot of jobs that are waiting to happen, there’s a lot of good to be done. With that being said, I’m hoping that we can do a little bit of good while launching this brand by starting with doing some rebuilding out there in your neck of the woods after the fire.

Hopper: That’s huge that you stepped in to help out, it’s gonna help a lot of people who lost everything. I’m looking forward to getting that benefit together. It’s always been my goal to paint cannabis in a positive light, so that it takes away from the demonization of cannabis that’s happened in the past. Smo: Right, it’s like how many other things were we taught wrong about? How many other times was the wool pulled over our eyes? Hopper: Exactly! Well, on a lighter note, what are you smokin’ on these days? Smo: Out here in Cali, I’ve really fallen in love with a few different things. I’m a really big fan of the Ice Cream Cake, first of all. What I have found that my taste buds also like is this Mimosa Breath. Okay, let’s put this out there off the top- my favorite strains are Jilly Bean, Jack Herer, G-13, and Blueberry… DJ Short Blueberry. The new one that I’d like to add to that list is the Mimosa Breath. I’ve also found Strawberry Jelly, so I want to find out what this Strawberry Jelly is made of and what the Mimosa Breath is made of and find the genetics of both those. There’s a lot of similarities there with the flavor, the terpenes and everything, but there’s a difference in the high. The Strawberry Jelly has a strong Sativa high, and the Mimosa does as well, but the Strawberry Jelly seemed more intense. I want to get to the bottom of that. As I’ve learned out here in California, it’s all about the genetics. Finding the blueprint to what you’re putting inside of you is important.
Hopper: Bottom line, genetics are everything. Smo: I’ve become more interested in what exactly I’m smoking and where it originates from. I’ve learned so much on this trip. The knowledge and the understanding of the process, and hands on harvesting a plant and taking it all the way from harvest to drying to trim. To look at this plant and understand what it took for it to flourish and flower and how those flowers are gonna heal…it’s magic. Hopper: It’s been a great time having you out here. Daily Dose BY SHARON lETTS A day in the Life of Warren Bobrow, author of Apothecary Cocktails and Cannabis Cocktails, Mocktails, & Tonics: The Art of Spirited Drinks & Buzz-Worthy Libations
His first experience with the partaking of cannabis was at the tender age of 11 in 1972. It was with his Harvard educated uncle-turnedhippie, who evaded the Vietnam draft due to Bobrow’s father’s connections in business. The second time he partook was a year later in 1973 while attending a Grateful Dead show at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. Then again at a Led Zeppelin concert with “much smoke in the air that night,” he recalled. The pattern of partaking at rock concerts continued at an Aerosmith concert, with Rick Derringer opening. He confirmed, he did, in fact, inhale deeply and often. To quote former President Obama, “that was the point.” The cannabis industry first came into his vision during a family vacation when he was 13 years old. “Amid the pink painted cottages, and Cerulean Blue waters with massive Parrot fish splashing up against the pink colored beaches,” he shared that he made friends with the bartenders, partaking in virgin Pina Coladas and exotic punches, with the occasional Pim’s Cup, which contained very little alcohol. The bartenders also passed a little herb in his direction. “It was outdoor grown island weed, that may or may not have gotten me stoned,” he explained. “What it did do for me was make me a cool kid, when all I really identified with at the time was being a nerd.”
Bartender turned cannabis Alchemist, Warren Bobrow, grew up on a biodynamic farm in Morris Township, New Jersey. His father, who manufactured pharmaceuticals, expected the young Bobrow to become a judge, surgeon, doctor, or at the very least, a tax lawyer. Bobrow refers to his mother’s father as a tycoon – owner of Columbia Pictures television stations, maker of Aqua Velva and Geritol, with both products promoted heavily on T.V. Much to his father’s chagrin (and disappointment to the family in general) Bobrow’s cannabis use disqualified him from the family fortune. “It took great effort to just be me,” he shared. “My dad died refusing to know me, and my mom disappeared from my life eleven years ago after the theft of my family trust. First I cried, then I was angry. It caused me to take stock in myself and seek to be a better person.”

Eventually diagnosed with Glaucoma, he was then allowed to get a medical cannabis card in his home state of New Jersey. “That kind of diagnosis is a bad thing for most, but my cannabis use keeps it completely under control,” he shared. “Since I write for Forbes, I’ve had my cannabis DNA tested for a potential article. I learned exactly which strains I should be using and how much I should be dosing, pertaining to my specific genome. Pretty nerdy stuff that actually makes sense to me...being a daily weed smoker, now with six books in print and hundreds of magazine articles under my belt.” According to Webmd, Glaucoma is a progressive condition, passed down through generations, caused by an intrinsic deterioration of the optic nerve, leading to high-fluid pressure on the front part of the eye. The increased pressure is called intraocular, damaging to the optic nerve that transmits images to the brain. While there is no cure and no warning signs early on, it’s only detected via a routine exam for glaucoma. If not managed properly it can lead to permanent blindness. A paper published via the U.S. National Library of Medicine states that many pharmaceuticals are ineffective in treating the disorder, lose efficacy, and have intolerable side effects such as burning and stinging. The paper goes on to state that glaucoma patients who smoke cannabis have decreased intraocular pressure (IOP). This is due to the discovery of ocular cannabinoid receptors, prompting more studies on treating glaucoma with cannabis.
Living in New Jersey has its drawbacks where cannabis is concerned, as the state just recently adopted medical cannabis laws with limited access. Currently, there are just six safe access points in the state, making it difficult to source. “I’ve spent quite a lot of time on the ‘left’ coast of the country; if I smoked as much in New Jersey as I do in the West, I’d be completely destroyed,” he laughed. “Smoking outdoor grown, biodynamic, organically grown cannabis is not a bad way to go through life. I actually consider myself very, very lucky to have found Excelsior Extracts, or I’d be in real trouble in my home state.” Smoking too much isn’t an issue with a glaucoma diagnosis, but Bobrow admits he really likes the feeling of being high. Even if the plant wasn’t beneficial, cannabis would be his first choice for recreation. “Others like to get drunk, but I don’t,” he continued. “I use the Ardent Lift – Nova, to decarb. It increases the effect of being high. Shake It, Sugaree 2 oz. (60 ml) Cannabis cream, made with heavy whipping cream* 1 Scoop, coffee ice cream 1/2 oz. (15 ml) Irish whiskey 1/2 oz. (15 ml) Brandy 1 t. Pure Vanilla Extract 3 oz. (90 ml) Brewed espresso coffee, cooled 1 c. Ice Combine all ingredients in a blender; blend well Serve in a tall glass. Straws optional. *Cannabis Cream (or Milk) 1 c. (235 ml) Heavy cream, light cream, or half/half, or whole milk 1 gram, ground, decarbed cannabis 1 t. vanilla extract or dark rum (or a t. of each) Add cream and ground cannabis to a small
saucepan and heat until just below boiling (about 160 degrees F/71 degrees C). Measure the heat carefully with a heat-proof candy thermometer. Scrape off any film that appears on the sides of the saucepan. Stir constantly to avoid burning. Add vanilla or rum, then turn down the heat and cover the saucepan with a lid. Continue to cook on low heat for one hour, stirring frequently. Do not boil. Strain the mixture through cheesecloth into a bowl, squeezing out as much liquid as possible. Use the infused cream in coffee and tea recipes or in THC-infused milk punches. Store in fridge up to four days. Tip from Warren: Try making your Cannabis Cream with an Indica strain (like Holy Grail Kush) as it’s spicy and savory, and complements the toasty notes of the Irish whiskey. To make a nonalcoholic version, turn the Shake It, Sugaree into a medicated egg cream- just skip the whiskey and brandy, add a squirt of chocolate syrup, and top with a few ounces of soda water after blending.

Helping to cut down seizures, to fight cancer, to relieve pain, to help with sleep, aid anxiety disorders, and as I said before, just getting away from the stress that life throws at us.

And I truly am. I get to see some absolutely amazing things. Patients cured, fields of green, and the like.
So if you want in, if you want us to help “pay off your investors”, you want us to spend our hard earned money supporting you, then prove to us you give a shit about us.
BUT there is still a lot wrong with what’s going on and unfortunately I see it getting worse.
The tens of thousands of dollars you just spent on the parties alone during MJBizcon could have been used to help hundreds (if not thousands) of patients. You can use your influence and dollars to help us get some Consumption Lounges going, to get the state to quit making us put a joint or a gram in those wasteful Exit Bags, to making a program getting meds to those with lower or no income and Veterans, make sure we have access to the best RSO possible and not all this trim run stuff that is being sold now, and get these prices down!
Last week was the MJBizcon. The largest cannabis convention in the world. Businessmen and women from all over the globe descended upon Las Vegas to show how their product, company, investors can make the cannabis industry so much better. But the thing is, they are precisely the ones who have kept it illegal for so long by using their money to support other industries that don’t have the people’s freedom and wellbeing in mind and are pricing it out of the common person’s budget. I’m all for new technology coming in and helping with new ways of keeping our meds clean and safe. But when the people doing it don’t have our best interests at heart and instead are only worried about a bottom line dollar amount and keeping their “Investors” happy, no good will come of it. What it seems like to me is it’s just a gateway for corporate entities to come in and swoop up the whole industry. Has anyone noticed the sales of Nevada’s Dispensaries and cultivations to Canada lately? Hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent almost weekly here buying up licenses and existing businesses. Yet our prices for cannabis and cannabisrelated products go up and up and up! Somebody’s gotta pay off those investments, and that somebody is us!

Nevada has some of the highest cannabis prices in the country right now. We voted in medical marijuana to help people take their health back into their own hands, not to create a money machine for a bunch of suits that 10 years ago were calling us “drug addicts” because we found relief from a plant that makes the immune system strong, relieves our stress and pain, and takes our head out of the rat race that big business has created. Now they wanna come in and sell it back to us.
It’s no secret that as an old punk rocker, I hate the system and big business. But as I got older I also realize that I need to work with them if I want to see things get better. That’s why I’m not still selling in the streets anymore. So if I can change, maybe we can get them to change too. I doubt it, but I’m gonna keep trying. I hope you all have a great holiday season filled with warmth, love, and lotsa tasty buds. Keep in mind, there are a lot of people less fortunate than you out there that can use your help. Helping them out, even in the smallest ways, can sometimes be the best gift you can give to them, and to yourself. See ya next year! It’s cold up in North America at the moment and it is 80 degrees at midnight here. You have to love that! It sounds fun, but working in high temperatures with humidity is no joke. I thought the hills in Calaveras County were hot and dry in the summer. The island humidity never goes away. It is hot, damp and there is nowhere to hide from it year ‘round, except in an air-conditioned place. The Caribbean is beautiful and at the same time, the elements are trying to suck the life out of you. A simple mistake can cost you your health and strength. Just getting up into the countryside to look at the traditional farmers cultivation site can be a little tough. To deal with some of the difficulties in living within this complex climate, I keep my cannabis blood level high- it staves off the mosquitoes and it keeps me functioning at my best! Let’s talk about what a traditional farmer is here in SVG. The new legislation being drafted is the first of its kind. It is the first time legislations have taken in to account the Rastafarians (local cultivators) and their contributions to the cultivation and preservation of cannabis. Many have been growing for generations and know nothing but cannabis. This legislation gives amnesty to the traditional cannabis grower. The amnesty is set up to bring the farmers off the hill into the flatter areas that are prime for commercial cultivation without scrutiny. The traditional Ganja
Chef Fred farmer also is the only group that is promised a cultivation license when the legislation is passed. Guess how much the license will cost them? Zero! In my opinion, it is the best program to help traditional cultivators continue their work and traditions. The program also will fund and educate on proper growing techniques that will meet International requirements for import. This gives the opportunity for them to move off the illicit market and into the International medicinal cannabis arena with no cost. November 20th was the set day for legislation to pass through Parliament. It was later moved to December 10th. The country has rules that require time for Parliament to address the changes in the draft work prior to voting. It was heartbreaking when we received a call at 7pm November 19th stating there will be no legislation passed due to the changes. There were investors and media that flew in from all over the world ready for the passing and ready to get down to business. Instead of Parliament, the Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves and Minister of Agriculture and Labor Saboto Caesar called for a select cabinet to meet and work together to analyze and remedy each line of the draft work until all groups had felt good about the draft and accepted it. Imagine if you had the opportunity to educate and shape the draft work of legislation for a country. Not only am I working to position for a 300 acre cultivation license with research and development, extraction and 20 million gram International medicinal export license granted by the world health organization, but also work with the local people and lawmakers to see a sustainable, practical medical cannabis market that most agreed to. I have to say, this is the most honorable accomplishment in my career. The respect given to me by the government, competitive investors and also the community has been unparalleled with any other experience. KeepingtheTraditionofChristmasinthe Caribbean with Infused Turkey Ingredients 3⁄4 cup coconut oil infused with 10 grams of shatter of choice 1⁄2 cup packed light brown sugar 1⁄2 cup chopped scallions 1⁄4 cup freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste 2 1⁄2 tbsp. kosher salt, plus more to taste 1⁄2 tbsp. dried thyme 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1⁄2 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg 1⁄2 tsp. ground cloves 1⁄4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, plus wedges for serving 1 1⁄2 tbsp. soy sauce 6 cloves garlic 3 Scotch bonnet or habanero chiles, stemmed and chopped 2" pieces ginger, peeled and thinly sliced 8 tbsp. unsalted butter infused with 10 grams full spectrum CBD Distillate 1 (20) lb. turkey Instructions Heat oven to 500˚. Combine ¼ cup oil, sugar, scallions, ¼ cup pepper, 2½ tbsp. salt, thyme, cinnamon, nutmeg cloves, juice, sauce, garlic, chiles, and ginger in the bowl of a food processor; puree until smooth and set aside. Melt butter and mix with remaining oil; set aside. Rinse turkey and pat dry with paper towels. Season turkey inside and out with salt and pepper and let come to room temperature. Transfer turkey to a rack set inside a roasting pan, tuck wings behind turkey and tie legs together with kitchen twine. Brush turkey all over with butter, reserving some for basting. Pour 2 cups water into roasting pan and roast turkey, brushing once with more of the butter, for 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 350˚ and continue roasting, brushing occasionally with butter, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into a thigh, without touching the bone, reads 150˚, about 2 hours. Remove turkey from oven and baste completely with reserved sauce. Place back in oven and continue to cook until internal temperature reaches 165°, about 20 to 25 minutes more. Transfer turkey to a cutting board, and let sit for 30 minutes before carving; serve with lime wedges if you like.

OldSchoolBasicCanna-ButterRecipe: INGREDIENTS: 1 stick or 4oz. butter, salted (Plugra is a European butter with a higher fat/flavor percentage) ¼ oz. cannabis flower 1T. Bourbon Barrel Foods worcestershire PROCESS: In a small saucepan melt butter and cannabis flower together on low heat (do not boil or even simmer, but a few bubbles may occur). After 3 hours, strain butter into a glass container, add worcestershire and pour butter over steak after it's cooked to desired temperature. (I particularly like my steak medium, 145-160 degrees) A lot of chefs are snooty about what temperature a steak should be cooked.
