Interview with Bryce Foreman - Co-Founder of BLAZ Hemp VEGAS CANNABIS MAGAZINE: Tell us about your background. BRYCE FOREMAN: My background… I come from an analytical background working 9-5 in large oil and gas companies which gave me a great working knowledge of the vital nature of large supply chains and all the systems that go into actually producing real products – which most of us don’t really appreciate to be honest. To get a product, any product from the creator's idea into a customer's hands is a myriad of small steps and reliance on working with many other humans along the way! VCM: What led you to the hemp industry? BF: I like to say hemp found me vs the other way around lol.. Getting a bit
burned out in oil and gas I took a step back and travelled for a year before landing a really sweet job at a large modern farming operation. I was able to be in on the ground floor and bring my experience in systems to help as the farm owners were transitioning from traditional crops to hemp trials… it was a lot of fun actually and really stoked my passion to try my own hand at creating a product with humans from a plant that is truly magical yet still relatively unknown to most… VCM: Tell us about your team. BF: Our team is unbelievable, growing from just myself and my co-founder/ investor in late 2019 (pre covid), to now occupying a major manufacturing facility, sales and distribution arm,
farming resources, and marketing team in well under one year! I like to think in terms of potential, human potential, really when you stop and think nothing on earth works without the dedication and the spark of human ingenuity, hard work and potential energy of humans! Our team is a human one and this gives me so much hope for the future! VCM: Do you outsource your hemp or do you have your own farm? BF: I spend a lot of my time visiting farms all over the country and selecting the best hemp for our products. Last year we made the decision to grow our own and partnered with one of the best farmers in California to produce specific strains whose flower meets the federal hemp guidelines and more importantly is great to smoke! VCM: Any thoughts on the ease or difficulty of transitioning from tobacco to hemp? BF: Yes! Through our awesome social media community of humans (yes that word again) we have constant feedback on our products and its been nothing short of inspiring! The most striking so far was from a young woman whose Dad was dying of cancer and she was able to switch him from smoking his tobacco cigarettes to BLAZ and still maintain his lifetime habit but at the same time feeling relief. Truly heartwarming – the human condition is a marvelous one indeed. Overwhelmingly for those who have tried our product they have been pleasantly surprised how easy and indeed how uplifting the transition has been, because it is a twofold revelation – firstly it is extremely accessible, affordable and in the same format as their tobacco habit, the calming sensation of lighting up, inhaling and exhaling repetitively is exactly the same and secondly it feels great knowing you have lifted the weight of an addiction to tobacco off of your shoulders. Truly freeing. VCM: Big question for consumers - do these products get you high? BF: BLAZ products are made from federally compliant hemp which is less than .3 percent THC and full of CBD – this ratio is designed to not get you high. VCM: What obstacles have you faced as you bring your product to mainstream stores (as opposed to cannabis dispensaries.) BF: I would say education is by far the largest obstacle – educating the store owners, the distribution buyers and the customers themselves. Most have not heard about hemp smokes but are very eager to learn and to try. In this new product category there is no cookie cutter strategy that applies to marketing hemp smokes. What we have found works the best is human to human. BLAZ sales reps on the ground visiting cities state by state store by store, human by human have yielded the best results so far and we plan to expand this approach across the country. Currently in 22 states and counting! The other way we are having success is through Instagram – engaging the country through gifting and influencer marketing has been really fun actually and a strong way to build brand awareness, loyalty and product adoption. VCM: Who/what inspires you? BF: I’m inspired by our customers, by my partners and teammates and by the new market opportunity in this evolving industry. My mom is pretty exceptional too! FROM THE CHAMBER OF CANNABIS The 81st Session of the Nevada Legislature convenes on February 1, 2021, and The Chamber of Cannabis will be leading advocacy efforts to legalize social use venues in Nevada through legislation sponsored by Assembly Judiciary Chairman Steve Yeager. Their partners in this effort include a diverse group of businesses and organizations that understand the importance of passing legislation this year. Founded in the fall of 2020, the Chamber’s mission is to expand opportunities for commerce, diversity, and competition in the Nevada cannabis industry. The organization’s members see social use venue licenses as a way to expand opportunities in the cannabis industry to more local businesses, including social equity applicants while creating jobs and increasing state revenue. “With the opportunity for social use venue legislation in the state at stake, the Chamber is working hard to grow its coalition and is seeking partners for its 2021 Social Use Campaign”, said Tina Ulman, President of the Chamber. “We are proud of the diversity of our partners and members and we hope that more businesses will choose to join our efforts to create a more robust, equitable, and diverse industry.” This is not the first time social use policy has been considered in the Silver State. In 2019 the City of Las Vegas passed an ordinance allowing for social use venues, but the Nevada Legislature put a moratorium in place until the issue could be studied by the Cannabis Compliance Board. The CCB’s report is due to the Legislature this month. Additionally, cannabis was deemed an essential industry in the early stages of the COVID

pandemic. Despite this designation, and the almost $600 MIL of legal cannabis sold in 2020, it remains illegal to consume cannabis outside of your home, excluding most renters, and the tens of millions of annual visitors to Nevada, from legally having a place to consume. “As a legacy cannabis business in Nevada with a commitment to quality products for our customers and giving back to our community, we see the opportunity to own a social use venue as a way to expand our brand’s presence and provide more education for consumers. We also support the policy of social equity and want to see more opportunities for women and persons of color in the cannabis industry. HIGHER LEARNING >>>>>> Understanding Delta-8 THC The cannabis plant produces a wide range of potentially beneficial chemicals (sometimes called wellness molecules), including literally hundreds of varieties of cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes. Functionally, flavonoids provide their host plants with pigmentation to attract pollinating insects and have demonstrated significant anticancer efficacy, among other health-giving biochemical mechanisms. Terpenes play the evolutionary role of deterring pests and predators while also attracting pollinating insects via their relatively pungent aromas. Terpenes have also exhibited considerable health benefits in hundreds of peer-reviewed research studies, including anticancer and anti-inflammation properties. The 146 cannabinoids discovered to date, all of which are exclusive to the cannabis plant, have demonstrated a range of wellness attributes. These include reductions in systemic inflammation, decreased seizure activity in epilepsy patients, pain management, relief from depression and anxiety, and even prevention of the neurodegeneration that accompanies common diseases of aging such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Science of Delta-8 THC Recently, the mainstream press has become enamored by a minor, and relatively rare, cannabinoid produced by hemp and cannabis officially dubbed delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Delta-8 THC is not the infamous molecule responsible for the sometimes significant psychoactivity, or “high,” of this herb when smoked or vaporized; that compound is delta-9 THC. Delta-9 and delta-8 THC are chemical siblings that researchers and scientists dub isomers or analogs. This means that they are very similar in terms of their molecular structures and other characteristics. Their minor differences, however, result in variable binding affinities with the microscopic receptors that populate the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). This change in cellular binding produces different outcomes from each compound. In some cases, the various outcomes of cannabinoid analogs are not only “different,” but polar opposite in response. An example is delta-9 THC, which stimulates appetite, while it’s varin analog THCV curbs appetite.

Delta-9 has shown to be molecularly less stable than delta-8, meaning it transmogrifies, or degrades, into other molecules more easily. In commercial applications, products containing delta-8 THC feature the advantage of a longer shelf life than those formulated with delta-9. Delta-9’s relative instability means that it is prone to degradation, typically via oxidation or exposure to UV light, a process in which it converts to either cannabinol (CBN; a cannabinoid with an especially sedative effect) or delta-8 THC.

Despite their differences, delta-8 and delta-9 share many attributes. They both, for example, deliver psychoactivity. The discrepancy lies in their relative potency, with delta-9 THC being more psychoactive than the delta-8 variety. However, delta-8 and delta-9 also vary in the qualitative characteristics of their respective psychotropic outcomes. Patient and consumer testimonies indicate that delta-8 THC delivers a sativa-like effect featuring energy, focus, and creativity (helping consumers achieve what some label the flow state), but with a slightly lower psychoactivity level than delta-9. In terms of its presence in an individual plant, delta-8 THC is relatively uncommon and, like other cannabinoids such as cannabigerol (CBG), typically occurs in volumes well under one percent. Rather than plant extraction, commercial production often employs the laboratory synthesis of delta-8 THC and use of cannabidiol (CBD) or delta-9 THC as the starting material. Why are readers only now beginning to hear about delta-8 THC when Colorado and Washington State legalized adult use cannabis nearly a decade ago? Technically, this molecule became federally legal in the United States only as recently as December 2018 with the passage of the Farm Bill.
Market Potential of Delta-8 THC Based on both scientific research studies and anecdotal evidence in the form of consumer and doctor testimonies, delta-8 THC may turn out to be, from an economic and market activity perspective, of greater value than CBD. Thought leaders who advocate this position point to the psychoactivity delivered by delta-8 THC. It typically provides a more mellow and relaxed psychotropic effect than delta-9 THC. Studies indicate that the potency of delta-8 is roughly two-thirds, or 60-70 percent, that of delta-9. Some entrepreneurs are bullish on the market potential of this minor cannabinoid and are making significant investments into widely distributed products featuring the molecule. “I think delta-8 will dwarf the CBD market and can be bigger than any other cannabinoid in any other space,” said Nicholas Warrander, CEO of LiftedMade, in an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine in January 2021.
A Clinical Doctor Weighs In Dr. Benjamin Caplan is a medical doctor and practicing clinician who serves as Chief Medical Officer for CED Clinic and the CED Foundation in Boston, Massachusetts. In his capacity at the CED Foundation, Caplan has curated a large collection of peer-reviewed scientific research and related literature regarding the medicinal
Caplan emphasized the novelty of delta-8 THC in both adult use and medical markets and how this molecule appeals to the patients in his particular clinical practice. “Among the patients nationwide who are savvy enough to know about delta-8 THC, most are thrilled to have a therapeutic compound that supplies a less euphoric experience than it’s delta-9 sister,” Caplan told me during an exclusive interview for this article. “Other attributes of delta-8, including mild appetite stimulation, antioxidant effect, and relief from anxiety, pain, and nauseousness make it a fan favorite,” the pioneering doctor told me. Caplan warned of the risk of oversimplifying the message of how delta-8 tends to not produce paranoia among users, cautioning doctors and marketing executives to avoid stating—or even suggesting—that paranoia and panic attacks are never experienced with delta-8 THC. Like with any drug and as occurs with other cannabinoids and terpenes, sensitivities and negative reactions to delta-8 simply will occur in a small percentage of use cases. Those who suffer a negative response often are new users, where a lack of experience results in an overly potent dose—the pathway to anxiety and potential panic attacks. In medical cannabis patient populations such as those suffering social anxiety or Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (a combined patient population that exceeds 60 million in the U.S. alone), panic attacks are obviously the antithesis of a desired outcome. “At especially strong doses, delta-8 can sometimes cause some feelings of paranoia, especially in new users,” said Caplan. Overall, however, the research-steeped physician emphasized the utility of delta-8 THC and how it may help some patients and consumers in ways that the delta-9 variant simply cannot. “While the combination of delta-8 and delta-9 often yields a less euphoric experience, it can be a very pleasant alternative to blends of delta-9 THC and CBD,” said Caplan.
Research Studies A range of research dating back roughly 50 years has documented the wellness benefits of delta-8 THC and its relationship to its popular sibling, the delta-9 analog. Discoveries to date include a significant safety profile and a lack of the negative side effects so common with many drug-based pharmaceutical therapies. A 1973 study reported that the delta-8 isomer of the molecule conveyed roughly two-thirds of the potency of delta-9. “Delta‐8 (THC) has activity in man similar to that of its double‐bond isomer, delta‐9‐THC. Its relative potency to the other isomer, as judged following both oral and intravenous administration, is 2:3.” A 1995 clinical trial study by Israeli cannabinoid research pioneer Raphael Mechoulam treated eight children who had “various hematologic cancers,”aged 3-13, with delta-8 THC. The study reported that the sometimes severe vomiting that results from

efficacy of the chief wellness molecules produced by the cannabis plant, including cannabinoids and terpenes.
chemotherapy and consumption of cytotoxic cancer-killing drugs “was completely prevented.” The study also examined the overall safety profile of delta-8 THC, noting that negative side effects “were negligible.” The Mechoulam study also revealed that delta-8 THC binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the ECS (many cannabinoids are exclusive in their binding behavior, attaching to or strongly favoring only one of the receptor types). Many studies indicate that psychoactivity results only when cannabinoids such as delta-9 THC, THCV, and delta-8 THC bind with CB1 receptors in the brain and central nervous system (CNS). Because delta-8 also binds with the CB2 receptors that are most dense in the body’s periphery (outside the brain and CNS), it may play a significant role in the management of pain and perhaps immune function and be of interest to the huge population of chronic pain patients that is estimated to exceed 67 million (20% of the population) in the United States alone. A 2020 study entitled “Oral Cannabidiol Does Not Convert to Δ8-THC or Δ9-THC in Humans: A Pharmacokinetic Study in Healthy Subjects” proved wrong the urban legend that CBD, when consumed by humans, might be converted to delta-8 or delta-9 THC and, thus, result in an undesired psychotropic effect. The study’s authors concluded that their results “may have clinical and forensic implications considering the potentially toxic effects of Δ9-THC and other cannabis constituents, including cognitive impairment and...psychiatric disturbances." Sexual wellness and female empowerment advocate, Angela Mustone, has been both a visionary and a driving force behind innovation and excitement within the adult and sexual health market for over 17 years. Incorporating her knowledge and experience with her newest endeavor, High On Love, Mustone brings a fresh and aesthetically-pleasing perspective to integrating sex and cannabis. Jennifer Walker: Thank you so much for talking with me today about your company, High On Love. You’re in Canada, yes? Angela Mustone: Correct… Montreal. And we just got a huge snowstorm, so we’re deep in snow right now. I’ve been traveling a bit too, I just returned from Colorado. JW: I was just looking at your website and checking out some of the products. I really love the design of the website...there’s a feminie aesthetic to it, but it’s also sleek and user-friendly, which is great… AM: Thank you so much! I like pretty things. I started off in the sexual wellness space, I used to work for California Exotic Novelties for 14 years. Previous to that, I came from the beauty industry. So when I started High On Love in 2018, I was noticing that a lot of the products in the cannabis space weren’t all that attractive or appealing. I wanted to create something that was pretty and gorgeous. I was thinking about details like packagingsomething that speaks to you as a consumer. You know how it goes, sometimes you pick something up because it looks nice and makes you feel good! I came up with the name High On Love (and trademarked it) and that’s how High On Love came to be. Even my THC products are stunning, I really want to redevelop the cannabis space. My mentor is a woman named Susan Colvin who used to be my boss at California Exotics and her claim to fame 30 years ago was a pink vibrator. I really follow her lead with what I’m doing with my brand. I know we’re restricted with the regulations in the industry, but there’s certain ways that you can still use creativity and take it up a notch with your products. I’m really excited about this industry and all the possibilities. JW: Well if that was your motivation, you’ve done a good job in translating that to what you’re presenting. Your products kind of remind me of Sephora- everything looks so gorgeous and well packaged. Are you doing full-spectrum? Isolate? AM: Right now I’m doing isolate since a lot of my products are water-based, so I want to make sure that things blend well. Since

I also ship my products overseas, I have to be in compliance with regulations, so I use hemp seed oil as well. My THC products, I’m doing my own strains and my own flower, as well. I’m modifying some of the genetics to create an experience for sexual wellness, so some of my strains will have relevant names. JW: I have specific strains that I like to use as well for certain activities. That’s where the education comes in- we like to educate readers on the various cannabinoids, terpenes and ratios that enhance or inhibit experiences. Education is key! AM: I agree. I’ve partnered up with a licensed producer here in Canada, and in Canada the cannabis world is very different. There’s a lot of corporate etiquette. It’s very different from working with the grows in the United States where they smoke what they grow. I am trying to educate the growers because, even though a lot of the interest is in the higher THC strains, I think it’s important to educate the public on the various strains available (which may not necessarily be high THC). There’s a lot of heavy regulations in Canada. JW: So you have your challenges dealing with the corporate environment but I imagine you might also face some pushback as a woman in the industry, too… AM: Oh for sure! I created my brand for me quite frankly, and people like me. I know what women want. I have a very strong voice within the business. JW: We’re running into some similar issues here in the U.S. in that there aren’t as many cannabis brands owned by people of color and not a lot of gender diversity, either. AM: I am excited by the fact that the grow that I’m working with in Colorado is woman-owned. It’s such a breath of fresh air working with a woman who gets it! JW: Have you officially entered the Nevada market? AM: I’m looking for the right partner there...I really want it to be fun and find a good fit. JW: How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected your business? AM: When we locked down in March, my sales dipped like 80%. It was awful. But slowly, sales started increasing again. We had a great Christmas season so I’m hoping with Valentine’s Day approaching…February is usually our month.
JW: We definitely saw an ebb and flow here too within the industry. Slowly but surely, the industry is coming back…
better. It’s easily one of my favorite products. When I first saw it with the almond oil replacement, I cried! That’s how proud I was!
AM: I always say the main industries are alcohol, cannabis, sex and food. The main markets that people turn to for comfort, especially in stressful times.
JW: Are all of the products on your website hemp-infused?
JW: For Valentine’s Day, do you have any new products coming out?
JW: What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?
AM: I have a gift set which includes Stimulating O Gel with a massager toy, and the Dark Chocolate Body Paint is very popular during Valentine’s Day season. It’s heart-shaped and really cute. JW: Do you have a large staff? AM: I have a decent sized staff. Someone in regulations, a designer, a copywriter, a social media person, accounting, operations, I have a lab that works on the production side. I work with a formulator and I work with a chemist, as well. I’m very particular about what goes into my products, I’m not shy about changing formulas if I think that it can be better. JW: That’s great, it sounds like a very boutique style of operations within your company. Very hands-on. Even though you’re creating the products at a higher volume, you still add little personal touches to the products that make them unique. AM: Absolutely. My bath oil for example- when I first started making it, we were using mineral oil. Mineral oil isn’t the cleanest product. So I replaced it with almond oil. My profit margins went down, but it was worth it because the product came out so much
AM: Yes, they’re all hemp-fused.
AM: I’d love to come out to Nevada! I want to do something special. I have travelled during the pandemic, I went to China for 3 days, I was talking to my friend in Tel Aviv about visiting, also. It’s so much easier to do business when you’re face to face instead of online or via video. It’s just more personal, there’s no comparison. JW: Are you originally from Canada? Are you bilingual? AM: I am from Canada but I lived in Colorado for a time, as well. I do business in Europe, Russia, China...I’m looking at Israel right now and the Middle East, believe it or not. I am bilingual, I speak French, English and Italian. JW: Impressive! Do you have any famous last words to impart to our readers? AM: I’m very proud of my brand. Whoever thinks about buying High On Love products should know that there was a lot of love and a lot of work put into it. Mae Bereal is no stranger to cannabis. As a teenager, she consumed cannabis to treat medical bouts of depression and anxiety. And, as a young woman, as she began having children she sought out education on the plant as her focus turned to a more holistic way of living. Today, Mae operates LAV8, her CBD company while also focusing on beginning her journey into the THC side of things. I recently had the opportunity to speak with her regarding her role as a religious woman of color who is raising four children while running a multitude of businesses. VEGAS CANNABIS MAGAZINE: You are not only a woman, but a woman of color, a mother of four and a woman of God. Did these things open doors for you or prove to be obstacles? MAE BEREAL: Honestly, both. When obstacles have arisen, I have been able to lean on my faith and push forward. It is never easy to be the first in an industry to do a certain something. In being the first, you then have to pave the way. It’s a trial and error process. If you don’t have the faith in it and the passion behind it, ultimately you are going to abandon it. For me, in the beginning, walking into a room as a religious, black woman was difficult but it was also empowering. And it gave people that I would speak to a different perspective which they could relate to and oftentimes it made them listen. It is a good time to be a woman of color in the cannabis industry as well as a mom. VCM: You took a leap and began introducing CBD products within your local church. How did that go? MB: It was difficult. Having to approach something delicately while understanding that there has been a lot of misinformation. Educating people is so important. Especially people who have been influenced by old propaganda regarding the cannabis plant. I took it slowly,

asking people to tell me what they knew so that I could then replace what they knew with actual facts. Once people began opening up, the next step was for them to tell me what their problems were, where they had pain, and I offered solutions to help. It was an easy swap for me to replace the chemical-ridden creams with non-toxic pain reducing topicals that I could assure them came from a plant created by God. Once you understand where people are coming from and why they believe the way they do, you can easily give them the information they need to go down a better path. VCM: Tell us about your own journey with cannabis. MB: I began consuming cannabis as a teenager. As a teen, I suffered with depression and anxiety and was at times suicidal. I was introduced to cannabis, and at that time I didn’t truly understand the medical impact of the plant. All I knew was that this flower made me feel this way and removed these feelings. I was a patient for a while and then as I began having children, with each child I had, I became more and more holistic. Eventually, I wanted to learn as much as I could about the natural healing powers of cannabis - why it worked and how it worked. I wanted to help other people who were going down the same path I had gone down. VCM: Tell us about your product line. MB: Currently, our product line includes a soak, various body balms, a beard balm and some essential oil products. Our Rose Gold products include 24 karat gold within them which actually has antibacterial properties. That, along with hemp-derived full spectrum CBD oil and other organic ingredients really sets our products apart.
VCM: When I received my products, I noticed there was a seeded insert which I assume is part of your sustainability efforts. DEAR PLANTS: I L ove You! Plant life represents more than 98% of the earth’s total biomass. The diversity of plants across the world allows us to apply them to about every area of life, even when we are not noticing. We rely on plants for oxygen, food, shelter, industrial products, clothing, warmth, medicine, and more. Human existence depends on these pretty little living beings and we are not so different from plants afterall. According to Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, "human beings are natural organisms. Our genomes are developed and expressed in the natural world. The patterns and processes inherent in nature are inherent in us.” Both plants and humans rely on water, nutrients, and vitamins to convert and release energy. In both cases, our genes dictate our hormones and our growth and maturity depends on cell division. Both plants and humans partake in a circadian rhythm coordinated by their surroundings. While plants do not move voluntarily like humans, plants make movements to maximize efficiency of water, nutrient or light uptake by functionally shifting and nodding, twining, or contracting. These elements dictate each plant’s unique personality in the way they grow, shape, and form. As such important, unique living beings, what is not to love about them?
Plants as Medicine Studies have shown meaningful physiological effects of just being around plants. It is believed that these effects are achieved by simply breathing in nature and inhaling the naturally occurring plant compounds. Many countries have adopted forest therapy as a positive psychological and physiological benefit to humans. In Germany, there has been great success with their version of forest therapy, called Kneipp therapy. In Japan forest therapy is called Shinrinyoku which means, "taking in the forest atmosphere or forest bathing." Actually, the major phytochemicals of the forest atmosphere are terpenes, which are the largest class of organic compounds with more than 40,000 creating each plant's unique fingerprint. In Tahoe, surrounded by conifers, the forest contains phytochemicals rich in pinene, limonene, and caryophyllene among others, which have been shown to be great for the respiratory system, the brain, and general inflammation. Great power and great healing takes place when we look into the world of plants for some of today’s complaints. In the 1700s, all doctors were gardeners and botanists because most medicine was made directly from plants. In America today, conventional medicine aims to diagnose and treat a particular disease or condition, typically using a one size fits all approach. However, plants are still considered the most consistent sources for the discovery of new drugs. In fact, all medicine came from plants, fungi, or bacteria. Though health is not just the absence of disease, but rather the ability for our mind and body to be functioning at an optimal level. In alternative medicine, an herbalist or holistic health practitioner searches for the cause of the symptoms at many physical, emotional, and spiritual levels to create an individualized plan using natural, un-invasive modalities. Though plant medicine is not always suitable for every condition or situation, clients who use alternative medicine often see positive results on overall health and wellness, in particular improvements in fatigue and energy, pain, inflammation, digestion, mental and emotional function.

Outside of the United States, many countries rely on herbal medicine as a part of standard healthcare. Thousands of years of practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) created different versions such as Kampo in Japan, Ayurvedic in India, Jamu in Indonesia, and Hanyak in Korea. The differences of herbs, beliefs, and custom was mostly decided by the

bioavailability of plants in the region. Herbal medicine is still a part of everyday life and important in healthcare in New Zealand, African, South American, Eastern Mediterranean, and European regions.
Culinary plants Beyond using plants for medicine and healthcare, one of my favorite ways to integrate more herbs is to use more plants when cooking. Not just veggies though, heavily integrating the tiny bottles of flavor blasters we shake over our food to make it taste exciting. So many of the common herbs and spices used for cooking, like ginger, garlic, turmeric, parsley, basil, fennel, and thyme, are combined in higher doses in herbal medicine. Some of the more uncommon herbs like ashwagandha, dandelion leaf, and medicinal mushrooms like shiitake, lions mane, and maike are powerhouses that make great additions to dishes. Looking for desert recipes? Licorice root is 30-50 times sweeter than sugar and is a diverse medicinal plant, covering a wide range of benefits.
Plants in products The mass production of synthetic ingredients used in skincare products is damaging to human health and the environment. Although humans have almost always been exposed to chemicals, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a public report in 2008 indicating that the increase of industrialization has “dramatically changed the quality and the quantity of human exposures.” Certain chemicals added to everyday products have been shown to cause allergies, irritations, endocrine disruption, cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity. A known carcinogen called 1,4-Dioxane has been added to as many as 22% of cosmetic products. This chemical has been directly linked to cancer. The FDA does not require manufacturers to add the chemical on the ingredient list, making it difficult to avoid. Harmful chemical preservatives like butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) have been linked to organ-system toxicity and cancer. Products containing these chemicals include but are not limited to sunscreen, hair and nail products, makeup, fragrance, dental hygiene, skincare, and anti-aging products. The EPA website suggests purchasing green products to reduce toxic exposures, air pollution, water pollution, climate change, and waste disposal and provides information on safer ingredients. Evidence shows that chemicals like Triclosan, a strong antibacterial, have been added to soaps and detergents introduced in the ‘70s. Since, it has been found that the chemical enters the water supply, killing algae, crustaceans, and fish.
House plants Surrounding yourself with house plants (from your local nursery) will not only bring life into your space, but many plants can be useful for air purification. Speaking of space, in 1989 NASA cleared a number of plants that demonstrated the ability to filter potentially toxic organic chemicals to use on the space stations. Some of these plants include heart leaf (P. oxycardium) and elephant ear (P. domesticum) philodendron, golden pothos (S. aureus), and spider plants (C. elatum).

Operation Chronic Problem- You are the Problem! The story of Katree Saunders, a Nevadan Impacted by The War on Drugs for $100; Federal Prison, Loss of Marriage, Sexual Assault During Incarceration, and a Record that Follows By: Veronica Castillo worked at a test site, and a mother who was a stay-at-home mom, and raised by her older sisters Coree and Keira (thank you both for your service). She describes the topic of cannabis in her childhood home as:
In 1970, cannabis was outlawed with the Controlled Substance Act- also referred to as CSA. That year, the United States government decided that they would further control the ways we treat our medical conditions, and the plants that we are allowed to grow and consume. And then, in dictator form, president at the time (Nixon) in a move that further oppressed humanity, created the foolery agency known as the DEA. It’s all foolery. All of the shows and stories can’t be false right? I mean:
• Narcos- the story of Pablo Escobar, from the DEA’s perspective- told and showed us. • The story of Griselda Blanco (La Madrina), a woman that operated in the Miami-based drug trade- told and showed us. • The story of Barry Seal, a pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA- told and showed us.
And really, the list can go on and on. We can print a full issue on all of the examples and probably need a follow up issue. The DEA is a joke and ruins lives. It was definitely the case for Katree Saunders. About Katree Saunders- Before Operation Chronic Problem “I was made in Nevada (1980), born in Nebraska, and raised in Nevada”. Raised in Summerlin, Nevada, Katree says that her childhood was surrounded by love and support. She was born to a father who

“I was raised in a spiritual household that did not include cannabis education. My mom didn’t accept my cannabis use until I was older. When I was younger, she would always warn me about it being potentially laced. Safety was always a concern. It wasn’t until I was older that I began to educate her about the benefits of cannabis use as medicine. That’s when she saw the light”. Katree Saunders- Career Before Cannabis Prior to helping people heal through cannabis, Katree worked in health and wellness and the travel and tourism industries. “I planned itineraries for customers including hotel, air and ground travel, and entertainment. I also worked in the health and wellness industry by educating people on the benefits of Kangen Alkaline Water”. She mentioned that as a kid, she was really interested in general law, archaeology, and photography. Katree Saunders- Nevada’s Compassionate Care (NCC) and the DEA Katree started working with/for the NCC where she helped patients obtain medical cannabis cards from the Nevada medicinal cannabis program. Cannabis helped Katree heal from a list of medical conditions and physical injuries. Because of that, she wanted to help others in need get safe access to cannabis. She even met President Obama at Green Valley High School 2010 while volunteering for Organizing America. Not scared, she shook President Obama’s hand and told him that they needed to talk about patient rights as related to medical cannabis. It was during her time at the NCC, that
Katree helped an undercover DEA agent posing as a person in need, that Katree’s life changed. “I remember my mom calling me and telling me the DEA, FBI, and ATF were at her house looking for me and raiding it”. The undercover DEA agents were conducting what was known as Operation Chronic Problem, an investigation of Nevada based dispensaries involving raids conducted by metro police and federal agents. On the day the NCC was raided, Katree was arrested for and charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana and hashish, distribution of marijuana- $150 value. In return, the cost to put Katree through the system over a plant was $20,000 including the $5,000 it took to book and process paperwork. “I remember being in shock, but not afraid because I knew I did not do anything wrong, worrying about my kids’ well-being, making sure that the patients’ information was kept safe, and praying that God would make a way, because I couldn’t see one”. Katree Saunders- Time Served in Federal Prison and Probation Katree was in prison for 4 months. During that time, her husband divorced her, took their children and moved away, and she was sexually harassed and assaulted by a U.S Marshal. Protect and serve….right? $150 was the cost of freedom, family, love, dignity, and more. “Prison was like ‘Club Fed’”. The holding facility was terrible, but while I was in holding, I took acting classes; our acting instructor was on the TV Show “Leave it to Beaver”, and I would pray a lot. I eventually prayed for someone to pray with as I was praying alone, and miraculously a prayer circle bumped into me while I was resting and I felt my prayers were answered. The
prayer circle I found was at Corrections Corp. America in Pahrump, NV”. Probation was in Katree’s future. After serving time in prison, Katree was released and The State of Nevada Probation Department obtained a court order preventing Katree’s doctor from prescribing Marinol (a trade name for a specific form of tetrahydrocannabinol- THC). Being on probation meant that she couldn’t consume cannabis. This caused yet another hardship. Katree was formally addicted to pharmaceuticals due to medical conditions and injuries (as stated above) sustained in car and other accidents. Cannabis helped Katree get rid of her addiction and so, because of probation, those same pharmaceuticals that caused hardship, were her only option for treatment. America looking out for their citizens… right? The system is designed to keep the oppressed- oppressed. Doctors and makers of opioids face no hardship. They are allowed to create addiction under the laws of the United States. The DEA isn’t here for them- they are here for plants. ABC News reports that America swallows/consumes over 90% of the world’s hydrocodone and 80% of the planet’s opioids. 80% of the planet’s opioids- and this is legal! The United States of America makes up only 4.6% of the planet’s population. BUT THE DEA IS HERE FOR PLANTS! Make it make sense America! Katree Saunders- Additional Contributions to the Cannabis Industry Katree has contributed so much to the cannabis industry and now, the laws in Nevada and many places keep her out. This shouldn’t be the case! Congressman Steve Horsford, and Senator Jackie Rosen in support of the Safe Banking Act and the CARERS Act. • Katree attends city council meetings in Nevada to advocate for safe access. • Katree worked with local and national organizations such as Americans for Safe Access, Coalition for Patients’ Rights in Nevada, and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. • Katree advocated and supported the campaign for Vote 2 which legalized cannabis for adult use in the state of Nevada. • Katree protected over 800 patients from ‘Operation Chronic Problem’. • Katree helped implement retail, to safe access, to medical cannabis and supported implementation that created the market in which the industry made billions of dollars and tax revenue for the state of Nevada over the course of many years. • Katree has worked at multiple dispensaries and supported grand openings. • Katree provided and continues to provide patient education on the endocannabinoid system/ terpene profile. • Katree is a constituent with the Last Prisoners Project, Re-entry Program, helping bring awareness to the over 40,000 cannabis prisoners still incarcerated. • Katree is working with Americans For Safe Access, advocating for medical cannabis patient’s rights at a federal and international level with the United Nations.
And while this list is long, it still doesn’t cover everything that Katree has contributed. The list is meant as an overview because it truly doesn’t include everything. Katree Saunders Message to Nevada Law Makers When I asked Katree: You are a black woman that made waves, asked questions, sat at a table with the President, helped establish cannabis in Nevada, and Nevada says you can’t get a license; what do you want to say to the politicians keeping you out and those helping them? Her response was:“Systemic racism is backed by laws perpetuated by white supremacy so that oppressors can keep disenfranchised people most affected by the war on drugs, out of the legal cannabis market. They do this by enabling exorbitant fees and favoritism. I was actually told by a local politician, in a text message, ‘White people don’t
hand over $ and power - you have to take it, because you are a nobody.’ I demand that I have ownership in the legal Nevada cannabis market, which would include cultivation, dispensaries, etc. so I may one day have a MSO that is black woman owned. For all I have sacrificed for the community and the millions of dollars I have helped earn, I want to see real justice served. That the bills written in the Nevada State Legislature be inclusive of those most harmed by the failed War on Drugs, not a perpetual cycle of disenfranchisement. My family deserves to build generational wealth”. In Closing Katree is a passionate, educated, and experienced person. Though the government took time of her life away, gave her a record that makes it difficult to seek employment in the cannabis industry and others, left her with PTSD, and in the struggle of her life to be able to treat her conditions with cannabis- she remains kind hearted with a nurturing tone in her voice: “I just want to get back to work”. When I asked Katree if her life is starting to feel normal or close to it, she responded: “No, I feel like I am still having to fight a battle after I already fought the war on drugs. It has become more difficult to obtain normal things while still having to deal with a corrupt system that is set up for systemic oppression”. Katree represents a group of people that the system is keeping down. They served their time and are still treated like prisoners. Katree was charged with a non-violent crime and because of that record, it seems impossible for her to obtain employment. She has tried and while she primarily wants to work in cannabis, she is open to other industries. “I can’t get a job in the airline industry or even as a Lyft driver. My conviction really keeps me from the industry, after I helped create jobs and train people within it”. This has to change! LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT VEGAS PRESSED VEGAS CANNABIS MAGAZINE: Tell us a little about yourself. Are you originally from Vegas? TAJA HOLLIMON: My name is Taja Hollimon, I am 32 years old and I recently started my company, Vegas Pressed. I was born in Las Vegas but spent the majority of my life in Iowa, and now I am back! VCM: What did you do prior to starting this business? TH: I was in sales prior to this which inspired me to create and sell my own products. VCM: What prompted you to start Vegas Pressed? And, what type of business is it? TH: Being furloughed while living in a tourist city during covid-19 allowed me the time to focus on and grow a small business. I can’t wait to see what it evolves into! I create press-on, custom nails. VCM: Why the artificial nail business? TH: I’ve worn press-on nails since I was 25 and worked at Twin Peaks. One of the rules there was that you had to keep your nails done and most of the girls I worked with wore them. It was a product I understood and saw ways I could make better. VCM: Have you encountered any obstacles?

TH: Oh my God, yes. First off, the emotional strength you have to have to do multiple jobs at once is something I didn’t expect to endure. Between keeping up with social media, advertising, building a website,
shipping, and hoping you're making the right decisions can be draining in the beginning. VCM: What are the advantages to your press-on nails as opposed to people visiting a salon for acrylic or gel nails? TH: My nails stick to your hands as if they were a full salon set, they don’t lose their shape, they’re strong and reusable and less than half the price you would pay for salon nails. It’s hard for people to get over the stereotype of the word “press-on” in itself, but trust me these aren't your typical 7th grade press-on nails. In 2015, Shanel Lindsay was a medical marijuana patient suffering from chronic pain and inflammation caused by an ovarian cyst she developed after having her son. She was using cannabis to help but found it almost impossible to make an accurate medicine and was regularly eating ingredients, like butter, that she didn’t necessarily want to consume. Instead of relying on pharmaceuticals, she wanted to lean on the plant’s natural benefits but was frustrated that achieving proper dosage was such a difficult process. In addition to her genuine admiration and passion for the plant, a pivotal moment which inspired Shanel’s activism was her arrest for possession of marijuana in 2010, after decriminalization in Massachusetts. It was a situation that put everything she had worked for (including her career as an attorney) at risk and was a wakeup call that legalization without a clear equity focus and intent to remove racial disparities was not going to

happen without real, focused effort. She continues to fight today for equity in every aspect of the industry. If you’re anything like me, you’re a bit cynical when it comes to Valentine’s Day. Don’t get me wrong; a holiday celebrating love is great -- for the bottom lines of businesses selling everything from bubble bath to buttplugs! More than most, this holiday strikes me as a uniquely crass money making scramble. What marketing genius came up with the concept that a person has to buy stuff to prove his or her love? And it’s not even a sure bet- flowers, booze, jewelry…that stuff adds up, and half the time the relationship doesn’t last much longer than a TikTok! If only there were some way to guarantee your investment, to ensure you’d actually get something for your hard-earned cash. Well, guess what? There IS! This is Nevada, after all. And whatever else you say about us, you can’t say we’re not pragmatic when it comes to matters of the heart. We’re the only state to allow legal prostitution – so only here can you rest assured that the hard-earned cash you’re spending will definitely get you laid. That’s right, I’m talking about our legal brothels. Nevada has a fine tradition of these in-demand establishments, from the very first tents back in the 1800s mining days, all the way through to the 21 legal brothels operating today. I first became interested in brothels years ago, when I visited Sheri’s Ranch out in Pahrump with a biker friend. No, it wasn’t like that – we rode out for lunch! Sheri’s is (was, thanks to Covid-19, all the brothels are currently closed) exceptionally open about its business, and welcomes curious tourists to come in for a burger at the onsite sports bar. You can even take a tour given by one of the sex workers, which of course we did, and it was fascinating! I enjoyed it so much that I’ve been back a few times – once with my mom!
But for a weirdo like me, even more fascinating are the abandoned brothels that dot the sagebrush plains of rural Nevada – relics of a bygone era when enough miners and ranchers populated these areas to sustain such businesses. The first one of these I visited was the onceworld-famous Cottontail Ranch, just a few hours north of Vegas. Talk about haunting! The spirit of the women who plied their trade there over the decades was almost palpable, hanging in the rooms like a veil of old perfume. I entered through the front vestibule, where back in the day you would have faced a locked door with a little window, like a speakeasy, before the madame let you in. By the time of my visit, the door swung open freely, and I found myself in the old parlor – the social area where a bartender served drinks while the women lined up to be chosen by patrons. This room had long been stripped of most of its furnishings, but the walls were still covered in fantastically garish wallpaper featuring Art Nouveau-style cartoon ladies in various states of repose, falling from the walls in ragged strips of gothic decay. To either side of the parlor, long hallways led to rows of small bedrooms where the women conducted business. But now, little more than the occasional mattress and one lonely bottle of Charlie perfume bore testament to the thousands of dollars that had changed hands in these rooms. The stories that must have been told, the tears that had undoubtedly been shed…I could almost hear it all, echoing from the wood paneled walls and rising like mist from the shag carpeting. I’ve visited the Cottontail several times over the years, and each time it’s a little more fallen down, a little more vandalized. It’s really a shame for what was actually a historic Nevada business – not only was legendary Vegas casino magnate Howard Hughes known to frequent the brothel (he was said to be particularly fond of a worker named Sunny) but the madame of the brothel herself is worthy of at least a few pages in Nevada history books! Beverly Harrell was a nice Jewish girl from New York who, after a long and colorful stint in Hollywood, ended up running such a successful business out in the Nevada boonies that the Feds took notice and gave her a hard time. Rather than take it lying down (ha), she fought back by getting into politics herself – running for, and almost getting elected to, the State Assembly! She is buried in nearby Goldfield, and I’ve paid my respects at her grave.

But the abandoned brothel that had the biggest impact on my own life is way out on the western edge of the state, off U.S. 6 in the literal middle of nowhere about halfway between Tonopah, NV and Bishop, CA. I happened to be traveling through this ultra-desolate country on my way back from the Burning Man festival one year, and as I chugged up the lower reaches of Montgomery Pass, I spotted a group of abandoned buildings off to my left. A
huge propane tank out front bore the spray-painted legend “JANIE’S/ CLOSED/BEAT IT!” Well, that sounded like an invitation to me. So, needing a break anyway, I pulled into the driveway to take a look. It turned out to be a couple of dilapidated double-wide trailers with two long hallways running the length on each side – and having already been to the Cottontail a time or two, it did cross my mind that it might have been a brothel. But I wasn’t sure; it could have been a motel, so there was nothing to do but a little investigating. To this day I’m not sure why I whipped out my cell phone and took video – I wasn’t in the habit of doing so in those days, but for whatever reason I started filming myself as I crept along the first hallway, musing aloud as to what the place could have been. None of the bedrooms had bathrooms – just sinks, which indicated brothel…I guess? But then I got to the room at the end of the hall – and that settled it: floor-to-ceiling shag carpeting, and a heart-shaped hole in the floor where a Jacuzzi tub had obviously sat. Definitely a brothel! Anyway, I had all this video I shot, and when I finally got back home, I decided to upload it to YouTube and see if anyone watching knew anything about the place. This was way before I had ever considered making a living off YouTube, so I posted the video almost as an afterthought – but holy cow! The response I got was overwhelming! Not only did I get an email from guys who had patronized Janie’s back in the day, sharing their memories (in sometimes intimate detail!) with me, I also got a bunch of messages from people asking me to upload more abandoned stuff! At the time, I didn’t realize there exists a huge audience for the exploration of abandoned buildings – and the genre even has a name: urbex, short for urban exploration. I got a ton of messages from urbex fans and, luckily for me, there’s no shortage of abandoned and derelict structures in the Nevada hinterlands, so I was able to keep on shooting until I’d built a channel. Matter of fact, just another few miles down the road from Janie’s I’d stumbled on an entire abandoned town, complete with a burned out café and casino! So between “Abandoned Casino Ghost Town” and “Abandoned Janie’s Ranch,” I had me the beginnings of a YouTube channel…and it wasn’t long before I’d gotten enough views and subscribers to start making money. Eventually, I was able to bail on my gig as a freelance model and focus on YouTube full time- and here I am today, still crawling around wreckage in the desert for the amusement of all.

But I owe it all to Janie’s…that lonely old abandoned brothel in the middle of nowhere. Since then I’ve explored other abandoned brothels, but Janie’s will always have a special place in my heart. So, this Valentine’s Day, as I sit in cynical solitude bah-humbugging fake Hallmark holidays, maybe I’ll splurge for a bottle of mid-shelf champers, and raise a toast- not just to Janie (whoever she was) but also to the thousands of working women who staffed these places over the years. The Nevada State Board of Tourism might not officially recognize you as such, but to me, you are as quintessentially Nevadan as a Las Vegas showgirl. And I’ll keep making videos to bear testament to your existence!

The First Lady of the West Coast

Medicating for the music, for life. The First Lady of the West Coast (FLOTWC), otherwise known as 1st Lady, hails from Oakland, California. She’s what we call a Renaissance woman: a poet, singer songwriter, music producer, entrepreneur, and cannabis cultivator. There’s nothing she can’t do once she sets her mind to it. First isn’t just a word in her name, she’s also the first black female cannabis farmer to have her own line of cultivars, under her company, HERBOLC. The line began in 2016, with her first cultivar, First Lady of the West Coast Kush, then Black Girl Magic OG, December Nights OG, and Shirley Ross OG, also known as, SRG. Black Girl Magic OG is an Indica dominant hybrid, 70 percent Indica and 30 percent Sativa, with a high terpene profile of Myrcene, A-Pinene, Limonene, and beta-Caryophyllene (BCP). The term Black Girl Magic comes from a movement begun by CaShawn Thompson began in 2013, as a way to “celebrate the beauty, power and resilience of black women,” as well as congratulate them on their accomplishments, as penned in part by Julee Wilson of the HuffPost. FLOWC Kush, aka: FlotwcKush, is a Sativa dominant hybrid, 60 percent Sativa and 40 percent Indica, said to be dripping with trichomes. Shirley Ross OG is a new cultivar currently being tested, with the 1st Lady, stating it feels Indica heavy. This cultivar was created to honor her grandmother,

Shirley, who passed away on July 25, 2019. DecemberNightsOG is another new cultivar, also pending testing, with the 1st Lady, adding, “This one feels Indica dominant, with a fruity-loop fragrance and taste.” She’s especially looking forward to finishing up and introducing this cultivar that Joseph “Resin” Rezenee, the man who taught her to grow in Oakland. The cultivar was gifted to her from Resin and named by her Godson. Rezenee was formerly with Harborside Wellness, the Oakland dispensary founded by the DeAngelo brothers, Steve and Andrew. She initially came to Rezenee with a list of her own symptoms to address via a cultivar, namely depression and mood swings from a diagnosis of Bi-Polar Disorder. “When I was 17, I closed my eyes and said to myself, ‘God, can you hear me? It would be really dope to have my own cultivar line,’” she explained. “I manifested this, but Resin taught me to grow.” Another muse and teacher, Dukeoferb, is her breeder, helping her to develop all her cultivars - including the iconic, Black Girl Magic OG. “His last name is Erb, so I think that’s hella cool,” she added.
Treating Herself with Weed Her mother was a Police Officer for the City of Oakland, creating a precarious situation for experimenting with cannabis at home. One day, while her mom was at work, she and some friends decided to smoke weed for the first time out in the backyard of her family home. Scared and paranoid, initially, once the feeling settled in, she knew it was helping her. “The first time I smoked I knew it was medicine,” she shared. “I had attempted suicide as a teenager several times, and had been prescribed a lot of pharmaceuticals, but it all made me feel like a zombie and I was not productive. But God had a plan for me - I’m supposed to be here.” After smoking, the 1st Lady said she felt alert and alive for the first time in her life. “I felt creative again for the first time in a long time,” she
continued. “I could run and exercise, and it really lifted me out of the depression.” The effects of merely smoking cannabis are numerous, and include treating depression, quelling anxiety, and opening up the third eye, allowing creativity to flow. The 1st Lady said she began sneaking off to get high or self-medicate with cannabis, purposefully, ignoring her doctor’s warnings. “My doctor said that treating my depression with cannabis was the stupidest thing he’d ever heard of,” she said. “Every single one of my doctors said they would report me to the police if I continued self-medicating with the plant. So, I just stopped talking to them about it. I knew what was helping and what wasn’t.”
Daily Dosing for Bi-Polar Disorder A paper published in 1998 by PubMed, co-authored by the lategreat Dr. Lester Grinspoon, past Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, stated that cannabis acts as a mood stabilizer in bipolar disorder. The paper reports anecdotal stories from patients suffering from the disorder, successfully treating symptoms with cannabis, stating that the plant helps to relieve symptoms far better than conventional pharmaceuticals. One woman said it curbed her manic rages. Others said it allowed them to reduce the amount of prescribed mood stabilizers. Important to note: cannabis is an enhancer, and why opioid use declines in states where cannabis is allowed. Current patients this writer has profiled agree that cannabis does indeed stabilize their extreme mood swings, though many articles found online suggest that too much THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the compound within the plant that when heated causes a psychoactive response, can also trigger psychosis and neurosis, associated with the disorders manic episodes. Too much THC can also trigger anxiety, and patients must be proactive in the way they medicate. Smoking alone may not be enough, as the patient or partaker is only getting a fraction of the beneficial compounds by burning the flower. Using concentrates, such as smoking dabs or vaping, or ingesting low amounts of edibles seems to add to the efficacy, stating it gives them an overall feeling of well being for a longer amount of time.
Rise & Shine When the First Lady wakes, she bakes. Not to just get high, but to lift endorphins - which is really the same thing. Not stoned, which comes from the drinking culture of alcohol. Cannabis literally lifts endorphins and creates dopamine in the brain, successfully treating depression for many.
“I usually start my day with an Indica Hybrid of my own BlackGirlMagicOG,” she said of her morning ritual. “I’ll smoke about a gram or more, depending on how I’m feeling. I love starting my day with an Indica or a cultivar with citrus.” The citrus flavored terpene is called limonene, and is found in oranges, limes, lemons, etc. It’s benefits include aiding stress, anxiety and depression. One theory on terpenes is, the fragrance and taste you are attracted to are the ones your body needs. So, it makes sense, with a diagnosis of Bi-Polar, that this particular terpene is a favorite of the First Lady. Often she’ll make a smoothie using raw cannabis leaves with ginger, turmeric, and beet juice with honey and two teaspoons of sea moss. A study published in the National Library of Medicine’s site, PubMed, findings indicate that increasing fruit and vegetable intake for just two weeks treats depression. Making the old adage, you are what you eat, more true than ever. “I love the benefits juicing cannabis leaf with fruits and veggies brings to my body,” she said. “Raw cannabis juice is full of nutrients, and is just as beneficial as kale and spinach.” In fact, like kale, spinach, oregano, and a plethora of beneficial herbs, cannabis is a superfood. Meaning, it has the most beneficial compounds, able to address all of our biological systems, while strengthening our immune system. Top of the list for benefits from many plants is addressing chronic inflammation, which is the root of many evils, or illnesses, in our modern world, including chronic pain.
Mid-Day Medicating By afternoon, she says a good Sativa is necessary for an energy lift. “Straight Sativa cultivars are my go-to to get my creativity going,” she said. “I love it, because it adds a warm vibe and allows me to be creative, giving me new ideas for music. It’s also a good help with reading and studying - one of my favorite things to do. Mainly, it helps me focus, as well as brightens my mindset.” Another paper published in the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed, details the benefits and differences of Sativa, stating that Sativa cultivars are found to reduce the brain’s reuptake of serotonin, acting like the SSRI class of antidepressants, such as Fluoxetine and Sertraline. In boosting the amount of serotonin present in the brain, the right dose of Sativa has antidepressant effects.
Nighttime is for Ingesting Sometimes those suffering from insomnia need a little bit more of the plant to simmer down from the day and get much needed rest. Ingesting cannabis induces REMs, or the Rapid Eye Movement part of sleep that gives us the biggest recharge. Without deep sleep the

body can’t sufficiently regenerate, reset, and heal. “I’ll smoke at night, but I’m a night owl, so I’m up getting work done” she said. “I’ll do a mix of CBD infused edibles, like Space Candy. This gives me a more settled down mood, and I might listen to a little jazz, or do some cooking or watch a movie. Reefer Madness, the War on Drugs, and Discriminatory Marijuana "People of color don't want to go to jail, so if their brother, their sister, their mom, or dad, or cousin, or friend was arrested for simple possession or public consumption, they're not gonna want to use it. Even in a legal market, even as medicine." — Dr. Rachel Knox Think back on the days and nights sitting there with your “buds” smoking pot, solving the world’s problems, and creating fantastical contraptions to smoke with and sell. Then perhaps misfortune raised her ugly head and you ended up being one of the many arrested and not unlikely if you are black, found yourself away from your family, friends, and the pursuit of happiness and prosperity in many cases for years. An example is Derek Harris, a military veteran, arrested in 2008 Louisiana for selling .69 grams of marijuana to a cop. Initially convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison was re-sentenced in 2012 to life in prison under the Habitual Offender Law. Derek was eventually released but mainly because of the growing concerns of Covid in incarceration. His attorney, Cormac Boyle made this comment, “Righting the harms done to a person through incarceration includes supporting their health, housing, and adjustment to their longdeserved freedom…” I feel that the ‘long-deserved freedom” should include having rights restored and in regard to this dissertation the ability to become part of the ‘legal’ industry that has been part of his life.

The general understanding is that black people are almost four times as likely on average to be arrested for cannabis possession. The American Civil Liberties Union concluded that even though white and black people consume cannabis at “roughly equal” rates, black people are 3.64 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession. An interesting fact I pulled out of this report is that since 2010 with the increasing number of states legalizing or decriminalizing marijuana this national trend in racial disparities has not diminished. The ACLU reports that there were actually more arrests for marijuana in 2018 than in 2015. In some states, black people were still six to ten times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession.
People who have smoked pot most of their lives have likely encountered police. If you are one of them and ended up with a felony marijuana conviction you are not going to be a pot entrepreneur because the business has been designed to not allow you in. My logic would conclude that having a marijuana conviction of any degree would be the exception to the “excluded felony offense.” One would think that perhaps because you were part of the generationally fought battle against the illegality of pot you would be most appropriate for its business. But no… this is not in the legislature.
My point is, if someone with a felony possession charge wants to legally become part of this growing industry they are not allowed. Since blacks are disproportionately arrested it would only raise eyebrows and the legitimate question of whether legislature was created to actually stop blacks from becoming part of the cannabis industry. An industry which according to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration alone, brought $411.3 million in excise tax, $98.9 million in cultivation tax, and $335.1 million in sales tax, totaling $845.3 million in tax revenue for the third quarter of 2019. So, an individual with a felony marijuana conviction (predominantly blacks) is not afforded the opportunity to becoming involved in something with an estimated economic impact of $77 billion in 2020. Ergo, the effects of the generations-long war on drugs are still prevalent in marginalized communities, particularly communities of color, even when it comes to business opportunities.
There is a very viable question of whether this legislature was created to specifically exclude black entrepreneurs from becoming part of this industry. After all, it is clear that black individuals have historically been disproportionately arrested and subsequently over sentenced for marijuana law violations.
As reported in the Marijuana Business Daily, in 2017, black entrepreneurs made up roughly 4.3 percent of cannabis business owners. Presently marijuana is legal for medicinal purposes in 36 states and completely legal in 15 and the industry is set to continue booming. The opportunity for
prosperity is abundant over the board, you’ve done your time and you feel you can finally make some of the money you have talked about for hours during those smokey imaginative spells. But alas, you are not one of the privileged power players who have made sure they kept it all to themselves. No, not all the pot but all the money generated from its legality. Even if you are a young black entrepreneur, have no felony, with degrees and corporate business experience there are still insurmountable obstacles, mostly financing. Of course, everyone must overcome these extreme financial barriers to enter the industry. And while most banks won't finance cannabis businesses because it's still federally illegal, costs for even a start-up must normally have to be selffinanced or backed by venture capital. If you're rich and wellconnected, you already have the advantage. Fortunately, there are other ways of having enough money to start a business other than owning a couple of rich parents. Let’s look at the venture capital network. Venture capitalists are funding people who have access to them, whether you’ve gone to their school, you’ve worked for their companies, or are friends with their friends. Yes, it’s a self-propelling community, which I don’t see many minorities tapped into. To be fair, there are proposals out there claiming to close the gap on discriminatory practices in awarding licensing for pot related businesses, but even those seem to have language that once again raises an eyebrow. As a number of marijuana legal states have implemented social equity programs intended to give minority entrepreneurs a chance, they seem to be ineffective at best as they include controversial predatory language which hopefully is being successfully challenged. In Massachusetts for example, only two black applicants from the state's social equity program managed to obtain licenses although the state issued a total of 105 provisional and 79 final licenses. The federal legalization of hemp, or cannabis that does not contain more than 0.3 percent THC, opened a large and generally unregulated market of CBD products. Of course, this was marketed as a luxury wellness item, which once again precludes blacks in general. Dr. Rachel Knox, an endocannabinologist who specializes in how THC and CBD affect the body, notes that cannabis is medicinal and can be used for wellness but, “people of color, by and large, do not have the luxury to pursue wellness.” The Knox family is spearheading endocannabinoid treatment in the United States; Rachel Knox's mother, Dr. Janice Knox, founded the American Cannabinoid Clinics in Portland, Oregon. Her father, Dr. David and sister, Dr. Jessica Knox, also practice treating the endocannabinoid system with natural exogenous cannabinoids like CBD and THC. Although the effort to legalize marijuana, both recreational and medical, is making headway
in states across the country, many black patients are wary of its prescription. Dr. Knox clarified this, "People of color don't want to go to jail, so if their brother, their sister, their mom, or dad, or cousin, or friend was arrested for simple possession or public consumption, they're not gonna want to use it. Even in a legal market, even as medicine." Some clinicians with more advanced mindsets have finally concluded that the endocannabinoid system is heavily involved in a plethora of bodily functions, including pain, memory, mood, appetite, sleep, and metabolism. Although cannabis has been used medicinally for thousands of years the medical community generally dismisses it. If more doctors gave greater study to the endocannabinoid system and the benefits of cannabis perhaps the stigma of prescribing it would diminish and hopefully the criminalization of it likewise. It is clear, overall education will help combat the racist and classist stigmas. Hopefully, this will come sooner than later. Proper education will be of great significance in a battle that has raged on through decades of alarmist content about cannabis and those who use it. With anti-cannabis propaganda pushed by mainstream media and movies like Reefer Madness, millions were convinced that its use would force raving lunacy. Let us not forget President Richard Nixon's infamous "War on Drugs,” which helped perpetuate the demonization of both recreational and medical marijuana. While the crusade against American drug use was largely seen as a failure, many doctors are still skeptical of cannabis use and law enforcement still greatly targets blacks over others. While cannabis has been approved to treat a variety of conditions, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, epilepsy, anxiety, sleep disorders, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, it amazes me that it remains federally illegal and that state doctors don’t consider this to prescribe its use. Clearly as long as it's considered a Schedule 1 substance, many in the medical community will remain skeptical of its clinically proven uses and will bow to the power of the traditional pharmacological medications solution. Back to our original premise, the racial and legal inequity of the cannabis industry. It’s time to fight against this for black entrepreneurs and felons who have pot convictions. It’s time for this nascent cannabis industry to be dismantled and rebuilt on the legal front, business front, and medical front from the ground up. It’ll likely take years, but it’s not too late to be reformed for the better. As our world evolves so should this fledgling industry to allow minorities, felons, and those with the love of weed to build hope for their futures and the future of the industry. CANNABUSHI An Infusion Series This month we celebrate Black History Month and our beloved Valentine's Day! Both help us battle the hate that unfortunately exists in our society with the greatest power of all LOVE. Originally, I was going to do something heart-shaped or even a nice infused chocolate covered strawberry dish. Maybe something beautiful and a little over the top. Instead, I wanted to share with all of you something I truly love doing. I've had the pleasure of feeding the homeless in the Las Vegas area for over a year now. Giving back to the community is truly important to me. I love the diversity of people we come across from many different walks of life. Through my friends in The Baked Ole' Ladies Network. We reach even more now than ever! Our vibe is our tribe! I'm so blessed to have friends like these (especially Ms. Rose) I had the pleasure of cooking this month's recipe with her the night before our Truly Grateful Sundays at Molasky Park in the heart of Vegasanother location we feed at besides C.A.R.E on Foremaster Lane off Las Vegas Boulevard. We didn't infuse it for our Sunday in the park, doesn't mean we can't have a little fun with it afterwards! So let's make it with LOVE!
Molasky Park Chili Ingredients 20 pounds of ground beef 12 cans (×2) 14.5 oz. Diced tomatoes 12 cans (×2) 14.5 oz. Dark Red Kidney Beans 4 cans (×2) 14.5 oz. Black Beans 4 cans tomato sauce 4 finely chopped Green Bell Peppers 8 finely chopped Cipollini Onions 2 packets of Mexican Moljido 1/2 cup Chili Powder 1/2 cup Garlic (minced) 1/4 cup Paprika 1/4 cup seasoned salt 1/4 cup Pepper

Instructions • First off you will want a couple big pans for your ground beef. You will want your oven to be preheated to 400°f. Break up and spread out the beef in your pans. Place in the oven for 30 minutes. Add a dash of seasoned salt and pepper. When completely cooked drain out excess oils. (Keep in mind this recipe is truly for an army but feel free to scale down for home use. As I do later in the recipe.) • While the meat is cooking away in the oven, start opening all those cans of tomatoes, beans, and tomato sauce. This recipe is fairly straightforward in it's build. We have two big pans of meat and so we need a couple big pots for cooking. Splitting everything evenly between the two. Making sure to rinse off the liquids from the beans. I used a big colander. • Stir everything together in your pots minus the ground beef or for this recipe we used two big turkey roasters. Talk about an upgraded crockpot! Start adding your dry ingredients so they can start adding more flavors to the chili and homogenize. • Once your meat is finished cooking, make sure to drain out the excess oils from your ground beef. Start adding the ground beef to each of your pots/ roaster. The other ingredients should be hot by this time. • Stirring your meat until it is finally mixed into your pots of chili. Let simmer for 4-6 hours. P.S. don't forget the LOVE! Just a dash will do!....now for my stoner's! • Take a medium sized pot and pour some of that chili in it. Add some infused chili oil. I added 1 tablespoon
of my own CannaBushi Spicy Chili oilroughly 15mg THC. (If you look back a few issues, I will teach you how to make it. Well….close. Using my Magical Butter Machine). • Add 2 tablespoons of infused sugar 98 mg each and .25 gram of fresh distillate. Cook over a low/medium heat for 15 minutes. Keeping it at a slow simmer. Enjoy! I hope you guys enjoy this infused chili. We didn't infuse it to feed the homeless but I bet they would have liked it as much as I did! I enjoyed making this and it sure did help feed an army. will know what to expect or how to react. If you can pair some nice infused mocktails with food that is recognizable, your guests will feel most at ease. The following recipes are super fun for everyone. In this first course I have put together two options. Both of these dishes work well together as well as give your guests a vegan option. You may also notice that in these courses I have chosen to use multiple forms of cannabis, both infused and in the plant material form. Remember to offer a full explanation of what your guests are about to enjoy and be ready for any questions that may arise.
Hope the first month of 2021 has been good to you all. As we continue our elevated dinner party discussion we want to talk about a few key topics. We’ve established the who, what, and where of the party last month, now let’s discuss the flow, the dosing and how to balance highs, and a delicious first course. As the chef and host of the party, you are in control of how you want the party to flow. It’s a good idea to have a plan in place prior to your party. Think of a good way to introduce your guests to the dinner party. You can do things like offer mocktails and present your guests menus and offer an explanation of the evening. It is also helpful to determine what the style will be - buffet, family style, or coursed menu. Don’t forget to think about the ambiance as part of the flow. Make sure to have a playlist that reflects your evenings’ vibe. Have something playing in the background that will ensure your guests remain nice and relaxed while the evening moves along. Don’t forget to think of the end of the party as well. How will you want the party to come to a close? I always like to include a small grab bag of CBD products and other offerings that are relevant to the evening. A very important aspect to the success

of an elevated dinner party is the proper dosing for guests. No two people are alike when it comes to how they may react to consuming THC. It is always best to err on the side of caution and “go low and slow” with your dosing. Offering different forms of THC infusions can help control how your guests may feel. A tincture can have a quicker effect than a coconut oil or butter. You also want to have offerings that are not infused as well. This will help some of your guests that may be hesitant in overindulging. Be sure to think about the style of your dinner party and how that decision may affect how you control the dosing. For instance, if you have chosen to do a buffet style dinner, you may want to have tags highlighting the level and form of THC in the dish. Make sure to offer explanations of what the guests can expect in your food. To help alleviate any anxiety or “over-highness” your guests may feel, be sure to include CBD throughout your dinner. Having CBD in your desert or after dinner drinks can help your guests manage their high and leave feeling the utmost joy in their experience. Please keep in mind that less will definitely be more when using cannabis in a dinner party setting. The introduction to the consumption of cannabis is important. Not everyone
Field Greens with Infused Sherry Vinaigrette Yield: 4-6 portions Prep Time: 40 Minutes Total Time: 40 minutes
Ingredients 1/3 cup sherry vinegar 1 large clove garlic 2 t dried oregano 1 t salt 1/2 t freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, infused 1 bag mixed baby greens 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 cucumber, diced 1 carrot, diced, 1 tomato, diced 3 hearts of palm, sliced 10 pepperoncini, sliced 2 grams decarboxylated cannabis Instructions Blend the vinegar, garlic, oregano, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper in a blender until the garlic is finely chopped. With the blender running, slowly blend in the oil. Toss the baby greens, bell pepper, cucumber, tomato, carrot, hearts of palm, and pepperoncini with enough vinaigrette to coat. Season the salad, to taste, with more salt and black pepper, and serve. Using a hand zester, carefully grate the decarboxylated cannabis over each salad.

Instructions Wing Sauce Combine the hot sauce, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt in a pot and place over medium heat. Bring to a simmer while stirring with a whisk. As soon as the liquid begins to bubble on the sides of the pot, slowly start to add the canna butter while stirring with the whisk. Once fully emulsified, set aside for use. Blue Cheese Sauce Warm cream in a 1 1/4-quart saucepan by bringing to a gentle simmer over a medium-low flame. Cook 3 to 5 minutes, stirring as the cream thickens. Stir constantly to prevent the cream from burning or curdling. Add half of the blue cheese. Using a fork, mash and stir the cheese into the cream until a few lumps are visible. Once the cheese has completely melted, add the Worcestershire sauce stirring constantly to prevent burning. Continue to simmer 3 to 5 minutes more, until the sauce is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon. Slowly stir in the remaining blue cheese to incorporate it into the sauce. Turn off the heat and remove the pan from the stove to prevent the cheese from melting completely, which would make the sauce runny.
