Merriam Webster defines fair as “marked by impartiality and honesty: free from self-interest, prejudice, or favoritism.” Growing up, most of us at some point or the other have been told,“life isn’t fair.” And although it’s true that life isn’t always fair, when we encounter an unfair situation we typically have the choice to either accept it or stand up and fight for what is right. Last month, the Nevada Taxation Board reviewed the applications received from existing cannabis companies looking to obtain additional licenses. Once the Board announced those that were granted licenses, a wealth of chatter arose within the industry as many wondered how certain companies could receive multiple licenses while others received nothing. Many felt that the approval process was unfair and although many chose to simply accept it, one of our local dispensaries has decided to stand up and fight for what is right. In addition, those that received licenses within Clark County were given only twelve months to complete all of their zoning and regulatory requirements. But, almost immediately after receiving County license approvals, Clark County announced a moratorium on new dispensaries for the next twelve months leaving many feeling frustrated and unfairly treated. Those of you who follow us on social media probably noticed a few posts last month about other magazines being placed on our racks. I understand that this may not seem like a big deal, however, our team works very hard to ensure that our racks are stocked throughout the month. We always have our client’s best interests in mind, and when they pay to place advertisements in our magazine, it then becomes our job to ensure that the advertisements they pay for are seen. Other magazines on top of our racks inhibit this from happening. My husband explained it perfectly to someone just the other day. A brand rep was conducting a pop-up at a local dispensary where she had an array of promo items set out on the counter. He explained to her that the dispensary was allowing her to utilize their counter space as a courtesy and it would be unfair if we were to walk in and place our magazines on top of her items. The same dispensary allows VCM a rack space as a courtesy and in return, we respectfully keep our designated rack neat and tidy to best display our magazines. It is unfair for other publications to place their material on our racks or to blame the misplacement on the facilities that so graciously act as drop locations for us. We stand up for our magazine, our team, our advertisers and our supporters. Our intention is to always exercise honest and fair business practices within our organization, as well as out in the community. As a matter of respect for ourselves and one another, in the coming year, it is important to commit to integrity and fairness in all aspects of business and personal practice. Be well and Happy New Year!

>>> LOOKING Toward the future with mj holdings INC. hen completing their reverse merger last December, Paris Balaouras and his team knew that they had a lot of hard work and challenges ahead of them. According to Balaouras, “Our initial annual audit proved to be one of those challenges. As a U.S. public company in the cannabis industry, our audit firm conducted a thorough analysis of our company to insure that completely accurate and transparent information would be made available to our shareholders and the general public.”
In April of this year MJ Holdings entered into an agreement with a licensed operator to manage a three-acre plot at their cultivation facility in Amargosa Valley, Nevada and they petitioned the state of Nevada

to let them conduct a “test” grow of marijuana utilizing a state-of-the-art high tech mesh system. They began erecting the facility in March 2018 and received approval from the state in August to move more than 8,000 marijuana plants onto the site. The mesh system, first developed in Israel to improve desert farming conditions, filters out harmful UV light, reduces heat and increases humidity, while protecting the plants from insects and pests. The team was able to achieve results that rival indoor and greenhouse growing conditions but with considerably higher yields and lower costs per plant. They began harvesting the crop on November 30th and completed it in mid-December with an expectation to cure approximately 3,500 pounds of high quality, high THC flower and dry more than 4,000 pounds of plant “trim” to be extracted into THC/CBD distillate. Growing product with this mesh system gives MJ Holdings a significant, competitive advantage as they are able to cultivate marijuana for considerably less (50% 75%) than in a greenhouse or indoor facility. This test grow has established MJ Holdings as a preeminent cultivator of high quality marijuana. Currently, they are in contract to purchase additional acreage for their 2019 grow and they intend to scale up by more than

On the right: Paris Balaouras, CEO MJ Holdings Inc. with Wallace Cheves real estate entrepreneur/philanthropist 3 times. This unique style of growing, led by MJ Holdings incredible grow team, Mike Kelley and Doug Warren, will be a model that they will implement in future cultivation projects with their partners in other states and internationally. In November, MJ Holdings launched Highland Brothers, their new brand of marijuana products. According to Balaouras, “Highland Brothers embodies what we stand for: honor, vision and drive, while being a truly iconic Las Vegas brand.” Launching with their
Balaouras also stated, “In 2019 we will commence our industrial hemp operations to take advantage of the continually growing demand for CBD isolate in the U.S. CBD is found in numerous dietary supplements, beverages, pet products, cosmetics and the list is growing almost daily. The anti-inflammatory aspects of CBD and the other health benefits are currently being investigated by numerous researchers and drug companies and we feel the future for hemp and CBD is limitless.” The MJ Holdings grow team will plant 100 acres of hemp that should yield about 10,000 kilos of CBD isolate. Their belief in the future cultivation of hemp for the production of high quality CBD distillate and isolate is so strong that they are securing rights to cultivate up to an additional 2,000 acres in 2020.

Terpene Spotlight
>>> CAMPHENE BY JENNIFER WALKER
uddle up, kids. This month’s spotlighted terpene smells a little damp and musky, sort of like the woods after a rainstorm. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, we could only be talking about camphene. Camphene, while not the most sensually provocative terpene, is one of the most powerful. Known as “the cardiovascular terpene”, camphene has been known to help lower cholesterol levels and triglycerides. Remember all the fudge and rich Holiday foods you consumed in December? Camphene to the rescue! You’ll typically find this terpene used in common fragrances and cosmetic products, as well as household cleaners and some topical medications. Due to camphenes unique ability to fight fungus, it is often used to treat skin conditions like eczema and athlete’s foot. Psoriasis got you down? Fret not! Camphene is a widely used therapeutic treatment for chronic health conditions that can flare up and wreak havoc with our nervous and cardiovascular systems. As an addition to other natural terpenes, camphene can assist in the treatment of respiratory issues like congestion and bronchitis. Camphene as an ingredient in Tulsi oil (a combination of cineole, eugenol and camphene) can help treat T.B. damaged lungs and cancer caused by smoking. Because camphene is such a powerful terpene used in a myriad of preventative treatments for health and wellness, it sometimes gets a less than exciting rap. While not as sexy as say, limonene with a fresh and summery citrus appeal, or as cannabis-synonymous as it’s close sibling pinene (which emits a more powerfully fir tree fragrance) camphene is mostly associated with medicine. Topical ointments. Citronella candles. Turpentine. Ya know, domestic daily routine kind of stuff. However, what it lacks in a distinct flavor profile, it more than makes up for in benefit. In an organic state, camphene produces tiny dust particles which can irritate the nose and throat. And due to the scarcely white (or colorless) appearance and musky odor, it is often associated with camphor. Camphene has been used in manmade camphor production, proving to be quite useful as an insecticide agent. Growing in natural conditions, cannabis can only benefit from the bug-deterring camphene terpene. Belonging to a group of over 100 minor terpenes found within cannabis, recent research suggests that camphene is excellent for reducing the risk of heart disease. Relatedly, it’s also used to

lower the possibility of stroke and heart attack, which makes it a great natural alternative for patients looking to diminish the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Other terpenes such as linalool, pinene, myrcene, and beta-caryophyllene (while still useful for wellness) aren’t as effective for lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Let’s talk strains. Generally more prevalent in indica strains, Ghost OG, Strawberry Banana and ACDC also feature a camphene profile. Additionally, you can find camphene in nutmeg, ginger, rosemary, holy basil and conifer. There is a chance of vaporizing camphene during the cooking or smoking process. So to avoid this, make sure that camphene strains aren’t exposed to heat over 318 degrees Fahrenheit.

5 WAYS to use cbd oil every day >>> that might suprise you
U
nlike THC, hemp-based CBD oil is now readily available for online order throughout the United States and in a handful of other countries, like Australia and the UK. And, apart from relief from specific medical conditions, what are the benefits of using cannabidiol (CBD) oil? Anyone interested in improving general health and wellness may enjoy adding CBD into their daily lives. While research on the cannabinoid is still in its infancy, it is non-toxic and is generally considered to be well-tolerated by a wide variety of individuals. For the CBD-curious, here are five smart ways to use CBD oil every day:
1. MICRODOSE SUPPLEMENT
Have you ever tried microdosing cannabis? As it turns out, a little CBD can go a long way. Maybe you’ve heard about the growing trend of microdosing? A microdose is a tiny, daily or semi-daily dose. Microdosing CBD is easiest with CBD cannabis oil. A typical microdose is between 2.5 and 5 milligrams. This dose is often considered too low to be therapeutic for many medical conditions. However, there may be some benefit to microdosing every once in a while. Rodent research has found that low doses of the cannabinoid reduce pro-inflammatory compounds in the body. This is a big deal because reduced inflammation can have wide-sweeping beneficial effects on the body, especially during times of stress. While microdosing may have some immediate benefits (just like many vitamin supplements) CBD builds up in the body over time. Since the cannabinoid is stored in fat, consistent doses of CBD may be able to deliver more meaningful health changes as it accumulates in your system. However, there is no research that suggests what changes this might cause.
2. STRESS RELIEF
Hoping for a quick and easy way to calm down? Research has shown that doses as low as 2.5, 5, and 10 milligrams of CBD can successfully ease symptoms of anxiety in mice. Other research suggests that CBD is a neuroprotective antioxidant, potentially protecting the brain from diseases of aging. As a neuroprotective
26
antioxidant, CBD oil may be particularly good to take after a night of reduced sleep. The current thinking on the science here is pretty interesting. Have you ever experienced brain fog after a night of sleep deprivation? There may be a good reason. During sleep, the brain’s lymphatic system clears out toxins that build up during the day. This is why reduced quality of sleep as you age is thought to be a major contributing factor to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. CBD treatment is thought to be so powerful that even short-term treatment has been found to improve overall functioning and cognitive performance in mice after suffering ischemic injury. Ischemic injury occurs when the brain is deprived of adequate blood flow, which often happens during a stroke and as a result of heart disease. Essentially, picking up a CBD sublingual spray or placing a few drops of a CBD oil under your tongue while under the gun at work or after a particularly stressful day is an easy way to protect the body from stress-related damage. Speaking of stress... Do you know anyone who typically turns to cigarettes or other hard substances when under stress? Research published in 2004 suggests that even low doses of the cannabinoid (5 milligrams) helps prevent habitual, learned behaviors in rodents that were exposed to cocaine and amphetamines. So yeah, we ought to look further into how to use CBD oil to quit smoking or drinking, etc. You can go ahead and try it out if you want. Of course, when it comes to holistic stress management, no single health supplement compares to the long-lasting beneficial effects of healthy diet and lifestyle maintenance. Still, the preclinical research suggests that supplementing with cannabidiol may be an excellent way to give your overall health a meaningful boost.
3. ANTI-AGING FACE CREAM
CBD could keep you looking young. Seeking an excellent way to fight aging skin? CBD is a potent antioxidant. Why is that important for your skin? Antioxidants reduce damage caused by free radicals, which can cause the skin to age more quickly. According to Project CBD, the cannabinoid may even be more potent than vitamins C and E. What’s really going on here? There are two main types of skin
VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM
aging: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic aging is simply the body’s response to getting older. Extrinsic aging, however, is aging that is accelerated by environmental and lifestyle factors. UV rays and exposure to environmental pollutants both contribute to the presence of harmful free radicals. To neutralize free radicals, you need an antioxidant. Adding a few drops of CBD oil to your favorite nighttime eye cream or beauty routine can boost the antioxidant potential of your normal skin care regimen. This provides an extra layer of protection against extrinsic aging, which contributes to fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.
4. ACNE SPOT TREATMENT
There are a couple of great reasons to grab the CBD oil during an acne breakout. First, CBD is a potent antibiotic. A 2008 study has found that the cannabinoid was powerful enough to kill Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is a superbug that is resistant to antibiotic treatment. The common acne pimple may not be as nasty as a MRSA infection, but there is evidence that CBD can certainly handle the job. Early experiments suggest that CBD can reduce oil buildup in samples of human skin. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD treatment effectively eases inflammation and has a sebostatic effect. That means that the cannabinoid potentially reduces acne blemishes, which are caused by inflammation, bacterial infection, and the overproduction of sebum, which is the natural oil that moisturizes the skin.

5. PAIN CREAM
A well-made topical can work wonders. When looking at the ways to use CBD oil, this one is especially counter-intuitive. While many consume this stuff orally, the benefits of topical CBD should not be overlooked. In general, topical cannabis can be used to relieve pain and inflammation in anything from a twisted ankle, to burns, and minor abrasions. Unless the oil is infused into a transdermal patch, CBD oil placed directly on the skin does not enter the bloodstream. So, higher doses of the oil can be used to alleviate pain and inflammation in the skin. While it is not recommended to use CBD directly on an open wound (though it is an antibiotic), CBD oil can be used on bruises, bug bites, and other areas of soreness. There may also be some serious benefits to transdermal patches infused with CBD. In 2016, a study published in the European Journal of Pain found that transdermal CBD effectively eased pain and inflammation in rodents with arthritis. Dear Mary Jane: I am TOTALLY CONFUSED about the products found at my local dispensary! First, what is the difference between indica, sativa and hybrid types of marijuana? Why does everybody make such a big deal about this? Do you have a favorite strain that you use? MJ, you are my last hope; please don’t make me fall on my sword! Love, Maximus
My Dearest Maximus, Professing that which you do not know is the first step in learning something new. I applaud that! Stick your head out the window closest to you. Do you hear that clapping? That’s ME! And they say stoners are dumb. You could have fooled me! What were we talking about? These are some excellent questions, so I do not think that ritualistic suicide is necessary. Or even a good idea, for that matter. Starting from the ground up (HA! Get it?), let’s discuss some marijuana basics. Let me tell you what everybody knows about the differences between cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. Indica is sedating, while sativa is energizing. Sativa provides a cerebral experience, while indica is practically a sedative. Indica stimulates appetite, but sativa can inhibit those pangs of hunger. Sativa is for daytime use, while indica is best saved for nighttime. And hybrids? Only Frank Sinatra could play God. Well, I’m calling bullshit on the whole thing. All of it. I’m no flat-Earther, and I do concede that cannabis sativa and cannabis indica are plants that do exist. My problem lies in the tremendous oversimplification of assumed attributes based upon name alone. Sorry to rant, Maximus, but this really pisses me off. Do you know how to tell a noob to the weed game at a dispensary? The noob is the one who is solely interested in one or the other, making him or her an excellent candidate for buying The Stratosphere from you. If you truly want to tailor your marijuana experience, you must educate yourself about THC, CBD and terpenes. There are acres of information regarding THC and CBD available pretty much everywhere these days, so you can study up on those for yourself. Terpenes, on the other hand, deserve a bit of a happy ending. So to speak. As it were. If you are familiar with
30
aromatherapy, then you are no stranger to terpenes; if not, you can just choke on your ignorance! Just kidding! I do that from time to time- just part of me being me. Terpenes are chemical compounds found in a variety of plants, fruits and veggies. Would you like to hear one of my favorite weed hacks? If you have some mid-grade weed, eat some mango before you smoke your mids. You will swear that you are smoking moon rocks or something! Why is this so? Mangoes contain a terpene called myrcene. While I am not a fan of mangoes, I do like me some myrcene. Can you see where I am going with this, dear Maximus? “Indica” and “Sativa” might have meant something back in the day, but I would be inclined to think that pure strains of either are almost nonexistent in our crossbred, hyperpollinated world. Terpenes, THC and CBD percentages will dictate the type of experience that you have. Go to a site like Leafly.com and explore their terpene data. This will help you identify exactly which terpenes you feel would help your experience. I personally look for strains that have myrcene, linalool, pinene and caryophyllene, along with 18-22% THC and as much CBD as possible. Study up on terpenes and their effects on your body, and forget about the indica/sativa nonsense. With love from a hazy cloud, MJD

A day in the Life of THE MOMMY JANE
to be consuming high doses of THC? No, I don’t. But I do feel that there are many other benefits to non-psychoactive parts of the plant that humans of all ages can benefit from, including children and pets.” With her daughters in school, Jessica’s day begins before the sun comes up, giving her meditating, medicating, gym, and much needed mommy time. It’s also a time for her first live-feed of the day to her thousands of followers on Instagram, as “The Mommy Jane”. “I initially medicate as early as 5:30 in the morning, typically with a Sativa-Indica hybrid, or a THCa Indica-heavy tincture, which takes the edge off without tickling the brain too much,” she explained. “I’m what most cannabis consumers refer to as a micro-doser – only taking a hit or two, giving me relief and calm for a couple of hours at a time.” THCa is the compound within the plant that can cause psychoactive activity when heated, turning it into THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. Non-psychoactive tincture made in a coldprocess is a good way to medicate throughout the day with no head-high. “Because I have driving anxiety, I dose myself with a dropper full of Tonic CBD tincture before driving my daughters to school, which equals about 30 milligrams and contains CBD, MCT, and other essential oils (or terpenes) that keep me anxiety-free and ready to take on the world!” she exclaimed with confidence.
California cannabis patient, “The Mommy Jane”, a.k.a. Jessica, emerged on Instagram this past year and has become a major influencer in a short amount of time for young mothers choosing to medicate and recreate safely with cannabis. Like many young mothers, in the past, Jessica found stress relief in a glass of wine at the end of her parenting day. Her unhealthy lifestyle caused her to gain substantial weight and over time, the alcohol stopped being a positive factor. As a young adult, she said there wasn’t a waking moment of her day that didn’t include partaking of cannabis, stating, “before my feet hit the floor, the cold pipe was to my lips, ready to give me a good morning kiss and start my day with a pep in my step.” But it would be 15 years before she realized the plant as a remedy for chronic anxiety and various phobias. “My anxiety, depression, PTSD, mood swings, menstrual cramps, and a 100 pound weight loss, are all treated and attributed to cannabis and other plant-based remedies,” she shared. “To me, it’s a no-brainer that a majority of humans could benefit from daily cannabis use, in one form or another. Do I believe everyone needs

According to WebMD, medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTs, are partially man-made fats created by processing coconut and palm kernel oils in the laboratory. In comparison, most dietary fats are “long-chain triglycerides.” MCTs are used as remedy for a myriad of ailments, including diarrhea, Celiac disease, gallbladder disease, AIDS, Cystic Fibrosis, seizures in children and liver disease, to name a few. “When I return from dropping the girls off I medicate with flower or a cannabis vape pen, again, only taking one or two hits,” she continued. “I may have an additional dose of CBD oil about 30 minutes before I pick up the kids in the afternoon. This second dose is for driving, but also social anxiety, which are two of my strongest issues with drop-off and pick-up.” Jessica said she’s proud of her responsible use of cannabis, adding that without the help of a doctor’s knowledge on the subject, it’s taken her a long time to find the proper dosing for her ailments, as well as learning how to include these types of remedies into her lifestyle as mom and homemaker. “By evening I taper off my use, unless we are going out, then I bring my vape pen along and use it instead of having a glass of wine or popping a Xanax,” she shared. “I’m an active parent, and because I start my day so early I want to keep as much energy at night for my children, so my last medicating moment of the day typically happens at 4:20 in the afternoon with a live chat on Instagram. Otherwise, I wait until the kids are in bed to have mommy time.”
Her menstrual cycle is another story, and as any patient dealing with chronic ailments, dosing is ramped up for specific illness or disorders. “If I’m in my moon cycle, then I’m all about the medibles,” she said. “I have a high tolerance for ingesting, and it takes about 100 milligrams to take care of the pain, including using cannabis vaginal suppositories the first two days. Modern medicine never gave me relief from cramps, so every time I’m able to consume a natural plantbased medicine, I say a prayer and know that this is why I fight every day on social media to end the stigma, so that everyone who wants plant-based relief has the right to choose.” Cannabis infused bath bombs are favorite go-to for relief
during mommy time in the tub, among other favorite products. “The CannaBomb makes unforgettable CBD bath bombs and salts that I use at least once a week,” she said. “Sanna Canna makes a full-flower hemp oil appropriately named ’Avilia,’which I love for aches and pains; and Queen Canna’s beauty line that includes a face toner spray and serum has been lifechanging. Honestly, I don’t know how I lived without the topicals.” While she’s grateful for the plethora of professional products available now in California, at the end of the day, it’s the homemade kitchen apothecary products she covets the most. “At night I enjoy a cup of tea with homemade chamomile infused honey to take the day’s edge off, which
is something I learned from the woman writing this story, Sharon Letts,” she explained. “Sharon taught me that you can infuse many products we use every day with healing herbs other than cannabis, which ultimately boost your wellness routine.” Jessica believes that as a civilization humans need to get back to the basics of health care and prevention, and that needs to start at home, from the garden. “Basic health care begins in the produce aisle at the market and at the nurseries selling beneficial plants. Plant-based remedies should be as common as taking daily vitamins. I believe cannabis is at the core of the movement that can lead us back to prevention with plants, and our doctors need education on this subject as much as we do. In my heart I know cannabis has helped
me to be a better mom and a more loving wife to my husband.” Follow The Mommy Jane on Instagram: themommyjane For more information on the products mentioned, visit: Tonic https://cbd-oil.solutions/cbdbrands/tonic-cbd Cannabomb thecannabomb.com SannaCanna healsanacanna.com

HEALING PANDA:
NOT ALL CBD IS CREATED EQUAL BY STEPHANIE SHEHAN
enny Knoll has worked diligently in a multitude of industries. From television to music videos, Kenny is also an experienced videographer, martial artist and cook. But nothing compares to the passion he has for educating people about the healing powers of CBD while preparing quality CBD infused oils, drinks, food and topicals. In 2014, Knoll opened Great Grubbing, a gluten-free cafe and bakery. Later that year, Kenny suffered a stroke which lasted nine minutes and was accompanied by three days of sickness. In early 2017, Knoll suffered yet another stroke, but this one was stopped in its tracks when one of his employees administered CBD oil to him. The second stroke not only ended the symptoms within about ten seconds, but also prevented any sickness afterward. This was Knoll’s first experience with CBD, and it prompted him to educate himself and determine how he could tie CBD in with his cafe and bakery. Thus, The Healing Panda was born. The Healing Panda is not a typical white label CBD outfit. All products are purchased in the United States and all CBD oils and edibles are made in house, from scratch. Combining natural roots, herbs and oils, slow cooking them for at least four hours and then adding CBD isolates in small batches allows Knoll to accurately dose and customize each oil blend. Whether you are looking for a daytime oil to give you a boost and improve brain function or a night time oil to help ease pain and allow for sleep, The Healing Panda can help. Kenny also prepares more specialized oils to assist those fighting cancer, battling high blood pressure, experiencing inflammation as well as those looking for liver and kidney support. In addition to specialized CBD oils, Kenny also makes pain salves and lotions, coffees and smoothies, beef bone broth, gummies, cookies and other treats and a variety of pet formulas, all with the healing power of CBD. Many of these items are gluten-free and vegan and the gummies are sugar-free.

The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers
Happy New Year to all the fine readers of Vegas Cannabis Magazine! Another year of legalized recreational marijuana in Nevada has come and gone, and I’m anxious to see what 2019 will bring to the world of cannabis. But before I get ahead of myself, I wanted to look back on 2018 a little bit in honor of what was truly a wonderful year for weed, both here in Nevada at the state level and nationwide at the federal level. Internationally, major props to Canada for saying f*ck it and legalizing cannabis nationwide this past October. I think we need to take a lesson from Canada on this one and follow suit. And while we may not have surpassed Canada’s level of “woke-ness” to weed, we did take major steps forward. For example, we saw the Food and Drug Administration finally wisen up and approve the nation’s first prescription drug containing cannabidiol (CBD), Epidiolex, to treat certain seizure disorders. We also saw big conglomerates like Coca-Cola and the owner of Corona, Constellation Brands, leap into the cannabis industry and start investing in cannabis products. 2018 also brought us the ousting of the “Cannabis Grinch” himself, former Attorney General Jeff “No Smoke” Sessions. With Sessions no longer at the helm, maybe the cannabis industry can continue to thrive without having to look over its shoulder for the Feds! In Nevada, we saw record-breaking sales figures almost every other month, it seemed. This was obviously good news for Nevada and its schools, as millions of dollars in tax revenue were generated off of these cannabis sales. The Department of Taxation also released more marijuana establishment licenses, which in conjunction with the astounding sales figures we have had, paved the way for some big-name cannabis companies to come and invest heavily into the Las Vegas cannabis market, like MedMen and MJardin Group. The idea of marijuana consumption lounges in Las Vegas also picked up a ton of steam throughout the past year. And although I was really hoping to be able to ring in the new year at a cannabis consumption lounge, all signs point towards lounges getting the go-ahead sometime in the next couple of months. Fingers crossed! However, the most significant impact on the cannabis industry came right as 2018 was winding down. Just last month, Congress passed and the President signed the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018 (the “Farm Bill”), which massively changes how hemp is treated under federal law. As I explained in numerous articles in the past, there has been much confusion over whether hemp and hemp’s best friend, CBD, were legal. With the passing of the Farm Bill, the confusion should end. The 2018 Farm Bill expressly excludes hemp from being treated as “marijuana” under the Controlled Substances Act, therefore making it LEGAL. “Hemp” is any cannabis sativa L. plant with a concentration of less than 0.3% THC. I.e, hemp will not get you high. The 2018 Farm Bill also revised the definition of “hemp” to include
40
all seeds, extracts, and cannabinoids – as well as “isomers, acids, salts, and salts of isomers” – whatever those are. Basically, if it comes from what can be deemed a “hemp” plant (a plant that has no part of it containing more than 0.3% THC), it is excluded from the Controlled Substances Act and is legal. NOTE: This does not necessarily mean all CBD oil and CBD products are legal. CBD as whole was not excluded from the Controlled Substances Act. If your CBD product happens to come from a cannabis sativa L. plant that had more than 0.3% THC, then it is illegal even if there is no THC in the final product. This is why knowing the source of the CBD is significant. The Farm Bill also makes hemp an “agricultural commodity,” so hemp farmers will finally be able to obtain crucial crop insurance to protect their investment. This will only help stabilize the market in the future and give these farmers some peace of mind. Those in the hemp industry should also see access to banking get easier now that they aren’t looked at as criminals. Plus, intellectual property protections will get stronger for hemp-based businesses. The new law also gives each state the right to enact their own laws regulating hemp at state/local levels, so long as they are subject to approval by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (“USDA”). The USDA is now in charge of regulating the cultivation of hemp at the federal level and has been tasked with implementing rules and regulations. The transfer of hemp across state lines was also addressed by Congress in the Farm Bill. Section 10114 of the 2018 Farm Bill provides: “TRANSPORTATION OF HEMP AND HEMP PRODUCTS. – No State or Indian Tribe shall prohibit the transportation or shipment of hemp or hemp products produced in accordance with [the law] through the State or territory of the Indian Tribe, as applicable.” Although Section 10114 doesn’t go so far as to require the states to allow the sale of hemp products, it does undoubtedly prohibit the states from interfering with the distribution of hemp products. The 2018 Farm Bill is a massive success and a major step forward in cannabis reform. I understand that it is only applicable to hemp, and not marijuana, but it is still a big win for the cannabis sativa L. plant in general – no matter which version of her you are talking about. 2018 ended with a bang! Let’s keep the momentum going, continue to push for cannabis reform, and while we’re at it, let’s get these damn cannabis consumption lounges up and running. Here’s to a wonderful 2018 and an even better 2019! #StayWoke Follow me: IG: @Cannab_Esq FB: @MitchellSBissonEsq

TALES FROM THE CRIP
Forward to the Past So, I was going to call this piece, “Back to the Future”, to give it a hot and juicy title. However, when I showed it to my hot and juicy lawyer, he pointed out to me that the makers of that movie might take offense at my “willful act of plagiarism” (his words). Therefore, I have titled this article “Forward to the Past” and Robert Zemeckis can kiss my hairy Italian ass. Enjoy that mental image, folks.
Fortunately, we do have legal marijuana here in Nevada, and I know first-hand that it is an excellent pain reliever. The problem is that there is often a HUGE learning curve for anybody to digest when just starting out, let alone a 78-year-old woman who has never used a marijuana product in her life.
One of my favorite quotes has always been, “Those who do not learn from the past are forever condemned to repeat it.” We are living in a brave new world with regard to marijuana being increasingly legal, but where does that leave us? Sure, I no longer have to find my old friends Bill, Ted or Randy (remember them?) when I need to reload, but what’s next for us serving in The Green Army? My mind is curious and my Internet connection is broadband, so I did some research in an effort to predict the immediate future of all things marijuana. Nobody anywhere agrees with anybody else on this topic, so I aggregated my own list of shit that I consider to be predictors of future marijuana tendencies. First off, the consumer is King. We can have all of the legal marijuana that we like, but unless people are willing to buy it, it might as well be potatoes. No knock on potatoes, I could have used onions just as easily. As such, the consumer consistently drives the evolution of this industry. The consumer wants a wide variety of marijuana flower strains and strengths, as well as other marijuana-related products. In addition to variety, successful cannabis businesses must keep an eye towards product affordability. Personal observation at local dispensaries has demonstrated that a significant amount of the weed buying public is 50 years old and up. I am not going to start wheezing about fixed incomes and such. I would point out, however, that many folks are new to the game and probably neither want nor need crazy-expensive, highend, THC-laden dank. So what about the newbies? Is anybody catering to them? A perfect example would be my mother. There was a time not too long ago, when I didn’t tell my parents
44
a patient’s perspective

about my marijuana use. Why? Well, I’m a child of the 1980s and the whole “Just Say No” propaganda campaign left me feeling like a societal menace for using The Demon Weed. Fortunately, I nutted up and shared my VCM writing with her and outed myself. My mother has had two knee replacements done, she has rods in her back and she has arthritis. She has pain! One hydrocodone per day kept her comfortable, but tough shit, Mrs. Jay! Too many stupid fuckers overdosed, so now nobody can have relief. Sorry. Fortunately, we do have legal marijuana here in Nevada, and I know first-hand that it is an excellent pain reliever. The problem is that there is often a HUGE learning curve for anybody to digest when just starting out, let alone a 78-year-old woman who has never used a marijuana product in her life. So what does Mrs. Jay, and other neophytes like her, do to get dialed-in to relief? Smart dispensary owners will start holding educational seminars for new users, that’s what. Think about it: give them a 45-minute orientation on THC, CBD, edibles, tinctures and concentrates, then turn them loose on the dispensary. Can you say “goldmine”, folks? For the record, my mother thinks this is an excellent idea, and she has never lied to me before. Except for the time that she told me that my newly-permed hair looked good, that is. Say that you have driven a Ford your entire life. A Ford is a quality automobile, no two ways about it; it’s tough to beat a Mustang off the line. Eventually though, you might find yourself looking at Audis, or Saabs, or Volvos or Land Rovers. The trend of Next Level Marijuana really isn’t much different. Legal marijuana leads to luxury, or bespoke (tailor made) marijuana. In the cult classic Robocop 2, bad guy Cain came up with a drug called “Nuke”, which promised a different high for every mood. THIS, in my opinion, is and will continue to be the ultimate trend for marijuana producers to follow. One strain for active engagement, another for anxiety, perhaps another to make Tyler Perry’s Madea funny. Praise the Lort! Holler at me: PeterJayTrey@gmail.com Archive: PeterJayTrey@weebly.com

TURN OVER A NEW LEAF:
COULD 2019 BE THE YEAR CANNABIS IS REMOVED FROM SCHEDULE 1? By Dale Sky Jones
It is exciting to see all of this potential change coming. Cannabis and hemp have been vilified in the United States since the 1930s with the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Though the Tax Act was ruled unconstitutional years later, it was replaced with the Controlled Substances Act in the 1970s, which established schedules for ranking substance according to their level of danger and potential for addiction. Currently, cannabis is classified as a Schedule I drug along with heroin, LSD, ecstasy, methaqualone, and peyote. The U.S. attorney general, Congress, or the federal courts have the authority to reschedule or de-schedule cannabis as a Schedule I drug. While Congress may be our best hope for action in 2019, the power to classify and reclassify controlled substances has primarily been delegated to the Drug Enforcement Administration with input from the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services. That said, marijuana prohibition could become the next shiny object to distract for (or from) the current presidential administration; all are legal potentialities... and suddenly seem even possibilities. In September, the DEA rescheduled “finished dosage formulations” of CBD with THC below 0.1% to Schedule V to allow prescriptions of the newly FDA approved drug Epidiolex (a non-synthetic, cannabisderived prescription drug). This is the second time the DEA has removed a constituent of cannabis from Schedule I (dronabinol is pure synthetic THC available by prescription as a Schedule III, commonly known as “Marinol” and only approved after heavy lobbying by a pharmaceutical company).
The 2018 midterm elections moved cannabis another step toward reform in the United States. By the end of 2019, there could be unprecedented legislative activity across the country. Incoming House Rules Committee Chair Representative Jim McGovern (D-MA) says he will permit federal lawmakers to debate and vote on cannabis-related amendments when he assumes his role in 2019. Based on a letter written by Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) to the House Democratic leadership in October, we could see Congress address some of the 37 cannabis bills sitting before it. Rep. Blumenauer’s plan would begin as early as next January and could include addressing descheduling cannabis, veterans’access to medicinal cannabis, the current barring of cannabis businesses from federally backed banks, the unequal taxation of cannabis businesses, and narrowing the policy gap between federal and state cannabis laws.
48
Rescheduling cannabis would indicate that the federal government deems it not as dangerous or medically useless as previously stated, and would allow easier access for cannabis research in the U.S. However, reclassifying cannabis from Schedule I to any of the medical groups of scheduled drugs (II V) misrepresents the plant’s safety relative to other controlled substances. It also fails to provide states with the ability to regulate it free from federal interference. A Schedule V drug is still illegal to possess without a prescription. We must focus on de-scheduling rather than rescheduling, perhaps placing cannabis federally with the ATF (alcohol, tobacco, and firearms). Removing marijuana from Schedule I is an uphill fight. Schedule I is the most tightly restricted category reserved for drugs that have “no currently accepted medical use,” and removing cannabis from it has been proposed repeatedly since 1972 with no results. In 1988 the DEA ignored its own administrative law judge, Francis Young who, after a thorough evidentiary review, declared “marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the
safest therapeutically active substances known to man. By any measure of rational analysis marijuana can be safely used within a supervised routine of medical care." Still, it is unlikely that the FDA would approve smoked or whole flower plant medicine, as these are not actually within FDA’s purview. The FDA is not the entity that allows growers and dispensaries to remain open and will only approve single-molecule drugs for prescription use. Let us look to the American Herbal Products Association, Department of Agriculture or the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for control- for at least these agencies understand the regulation of plants. Congress will be under great pressure in 2019 to finally pass cannabis reform laws; the Farm Bill is a great start for hemp and American farmers. It is more likely that we will see piecemeal laws created to address immediate proposals rather than see cannabis completely removed from the Controlled Substances Act. Keep in mind, we must also de-schedule at the state level (in all fifty states) in addition to the federal level, to truly take the teeth out of the criminal justice system. In the end, it could come down to money. While it seems counterintuitive, keeping cannabis a Schedule I drug could generate more taxes for the federal government. How? Under section 280E of the U.S. Tax Code, businesses that sell a federally illicit Schedule I drug (or highly restricted but legal Schedule II substance) are prohibited from taking normal corporate income tax deductions. Profitable cannabis businesses could see tax rates as high as 70% to 90%. And, expansion at the state level with effective tax rates this high could create more annual tax revenue to the federal government than if cannabis were legalized and taxed at a lower rate - even if crippling businesses. As 2019 begins, it is imperative we all pay attention to what lawmakers will propose in D.C. (as well as at the state and local levels) and understand the potential outcomes impacting individuals and businesses based on how cannabis is classified. WHAT IS CBN?
Overlooked >>> This Cannabinoid Has
BY: THE GREEN FLOWER EDITORIAL TEAM
Helpful Benefits, Too!
hose who are savvy about their cannabis know that CBN is a chemical compound often found in old and aging flowers. Yet, there’s no need to be ageist when it comes to the cannabis plant. As it so happens, many of the natural chemical changes that happen to the plant as it ages may prove beneficial to human health. An incredibly complex organism, the herb is capable of producing over 400 different chemical constituents. While many of these products have yet to be sufficiently researched at all, there is a small (but growing) body of research on CBN. Historically, the compound has been ignored in favor of flashier molecules, including the chemical responsible for the famous psychoactive effects in the plant. But, times are changing, and seemingly for the better. Here’s the scoop on CBN and its potential benefits.
What is CBN? Short for cannabinol, CBN is a chemical naturally found in the aged cannabis plant. The molecule is actually a
52
breakdown product of the herb’s famous psychoactive, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). As cannabis flowers age, THC degrades into CBN over time. Cannabis flowers that have been cured for longer periods of time will naturally have higher levels of CBN than plants that were recently harvested. Unlike THC however, CBN does not cause intoxication. Yet, that doesn’t mean that the molecule isn’t valuable. Products that contain the oft-overlooked cannabinoid may be highly beneficial for those hoping to reap some of the benefits of THC without the high.
What is CBN Good For? Unfortunately for patients, CBN has been overshadowed by more popular cannabis products when it comes to scientific research. Early studies, however, have shown that the compound may hold several meaningful therapeutic benefits.
These benefits include: Appetite Stimulation Some people may not like the appetite-stimulating effects of cannabis, but for those who struggle to maintain a healthy appetite, we have some good news. In early rodent experiments, CBN was
found to increase appetite without causing a substantial psychoactive effect. For this reason, the cannabis compound may be beneficial for those who need to get some food down with an upset stomach or when appetite simply just isn’t available. Sleep If you’re hoping to catch up on some quality sleep, opting for a cultivar with higher levels of CBN may be a solid selection. According to Steep Hill Labs, CBN is one of the most sedative cannabinoids. Early research published in 1975 suggests that CBN can amplify the sedative properties of THC, potentially producing a more hypnotic experience in all. Unfortunately, recent research on this topic is few and far between. It is known, however, that CBN can weakly interact with the same cell receptors that cause the psychoactive intoxication of THC. While more studies are needed to put this hypothesis to the test, this weak activation could be partially responsible for the drowsiness associated with CBN.
Antibacterial Properties Like many cannabinoids, CBN has proven to be a potent antibiotic in laboratory experiments. In fact, back
in 2008 researchers in Italy and England found that the cannabis compound was potent enough to kill MRSA, which is an antibiotic-resistant form of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The bacterium can cause severe infection and is notoriously difficult to treat. CBN, along with four other cannabinoids, were successful against MRSA. One of the study authors, Simone Gibbons of the University of London, thinks that the cannabis plant produces these natural antibacterials to protect itself. “Everything points towards these compounds having been evolved by the plants as antimicrobial defenses that specifically target bacterial cells,” Gibbons explains to the MIT Technology Review. “But the actual mechanism by which they kill the bugs is still a mystery.
CBN vs. CBD
There are several key distinctions between CBN and cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is the second most famous cannabis compound. Recently, the molecule made headlines as the first cannabis-derived medicine to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of
VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM

intractable epilepsy. Like CBN, CBD is also non-intoxicating. However, even though both of the molecules come from the same plant, they can have different effects on the human body. For one, CBN is expected to be sedating while CBD is not. In fact, low to moderate doses of CBD can have “alerting effects. At least, according to a 2004 study published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Another major difference is that CBD does not increase appetite. In fact, research from the University of Reading found that both CBD and CBN produce opposite effects on feeding behaviors in rodents. CBD seemed to decrease appetite while CBN caused mice to eat more. At the time of writing, however, far more studies have examined CBD than CBN. So, while CBD has been found to have anticonvulsant and potent anti-anxiety properties, these same characteristics have not been as sufficiently studied in regards to CBN. As research continues, more information regarding the great wide world of cannabis pharmacy is sure to arise. Visit Green Flower Media online at greenflower.com. PHOTO BY PAWEL CZERWINSKI

New Section For 2019! Mission Statement To promote and foster the growth of the cannabis retail experience. To develop and enhance the Business 2 Business relationships between dispensaries and vendors in this emerging market. Our Vision Our vision is to bring collectives, vendors, growers and auxiliary companies together to create the synergy that was lacking in this area of the cannabis culture/industry. One of the biggest problems (which is universal in this industry) Is that the buyer or procurement agent is lacking time. This allows the decision maker, to meet, see and discuss products at their leisure. This allows the decision maker to see many compliant companies at once, and to create ongoing relationships. Justin, Hap and the Champs Dispensary+ team look forward to helping create an atmosphere that you can thrive and conduct business, at your LEISURE. We are also open to companies/vendors you want to see there. Feedback is important, and we are open to it. The industry is changing and helping you expand to a bigger market share is our goal. Spotlight of the Month:
Sativa Sean Smith, Cannabis Entrepreneur BY DAWN STARR LOOKING ELK VCM sat down with Sativa Sean Smith to ask him about the path that brought him to the Nevada Cannabis industry, and what he brings to the table for the future of our cannabis community.
DS: Tell our readers a little bit about yourself. SS: I grew up in Las Vegas, ever since my family moved from the
island of Western Samoa in 1984. I went to Woodbury Junior High, and graduated from Chaparral High School. I’m a six-time Nevada State Golden Gloves champion which landed me on the prestigious US National Boxing Team for 5 years with Floyd Mayweather Jr. along with 2012 Olympic Boxing Coach and the last guy to beat Floyd, Augie Sanchez. Later in 1996, I made the Samoan Olympic Boxing Team. Shortly after, I attended UNLV on the Greenspun Media Scholarship and graduated with my B.A. in Mass Communications. Before college ended, I landed a coveted managerial job at MGM. This led me to Circus Circus and finally Boyd Gaming where I became the Sr. International Sales Manager at 25-years-old, I booked more business than the entire sales department combined- that’s when I learned the value of sales, I worked for Bob Boughner, the CEO of Boyd, and as in Bob Boughner Hospitality School UNLV. I really started becoming successful at 26, selling raw land to the Southern Nevada Water Authority, then purchased hotels, restaurants, developed land in the Northwest Valley and really "got into" Las Vegas. I met Oscar Goodman a few times when I had properties Downtown, I sold a property to Steve Siegel, (owner of Siegel Suites). I taught classes to International students wanting to become hotel workers, taught literature through the TRIO Program at Nevada State College for high school students transitioning to college and also taught at my old high school for several months, and I absolutely loved it. One thing you should know about me is I LOVE LAS VEGAS! This city can make you anyone you want to be, if you have the discipline. On the flipside, if you get carried away in vices, it will eat you up and spit you out and, believe me, I know both sides of that coin. I departed Vegas for a time in the late 1990’s up to 2010 to buy hotels and open a chain of snowboarder hotels with MTV Star Rob Dyrdek. But I' m back now...for good. My son was raised here and he attends Nevada State College. My family lives here and I love this community.
DS: What projects are you working on currently? SS: I love teaching, so I’m working my ass off for the next 20 years
in Las Vegas so I can build a school and teach on my family land in Apia, Samoa in 2040 or something. I’m working on a new airline for Las Vegas called “LVAIR”. It’s an ultra chic air charter that carries
60
200 High Rollers in a jumbo jet to Las Vegas in an aircraft that has recreated “Las Vegas in the Sky” (www.lasvegasinthesky.com). It’s a remarkable venture, and one of the greatest challenges of my life! This airline is my dream of dreams. After 12 hotels, I got tired of the hotel business, teaching doesn’t pay enough to keep me interested, so I developed this existential “F$%k YES!” or “ABSOLUTE NO” attitude on life. This is the greatest venture of my life, and it is an honor to simply dare to do it; so I’m doing it. It’s going to be either the biggest thing to hit Las Vegas since Bugsy Siegel built the first casino, or the biggest swan dive in history- but either way, we’re having fun. And finally, there is cannabis. It directly ties into LVAIR as cannabis will be part of the gift bag goodies when you land in Las Vegas, so we’re deeply researching the legalities, the issues, packaging, etc., and most importantly, the future, which I find to be no less significant than the end of Prohibition. That’s not hyperbole...that’s real.
DS: What are your motives and intentions for the NV cannabis industry? SS: I’m not sure if I mentioned, I LOVE LAS VEGAS. The cannabis
industry is very successful here, but there seems to be a fog over it, almost suppressing the bright, positive aspects of its development. People are apprehensively relieved (if that makes sense) when they should be celebrating this recognition of what’s been known all along- that cannabis is not the enemy. I plan to take a stand and be that person, that opens up the shutters, flings open the door and proclaims “Come in everyone, it’s time to celebrate our new found reason and relish in our freedom". It’s not just for those who partake, but for society as a whole. The tax benefits, the societal relief on prisons, the families put back together, the legal system progressing humanely, and least of all, a good opportunity for well-meaning businessmen to meet others that feel the same way. I’m holding a Bud Bash Business Mixer for my birthday in February since I know so many amazing people in the city! We’re going to celebrate, spend the evening together with brotherhood, music, entertainment, art and most of all...cannabis. It’s a private invite
VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM
only, and it’s my way of releasing all of this tension that is being draped over cannabis, by bravely saying YES to freedom, and to life and of course, nature. My Bud Bash is the cannabis version of the Boston Tea Party for Las Vegas, no more criminalization without representation! I’m providing everything, no charge for my VIP’s.
DS: What unique qualities do you bring to our industry? SS: When it comes to business, I’m a seasoned Vet, but in the
cannabiz, I am a neophyte. The things I’ve seen have been nothing short of amazing, but more so what I feel when I’m in a dispensary is that collective happiness of a lifted steel blanket on the lives of so many. I’m seeing everything with fresh eyes. Even with 190 fights under my belt, if I don’t know who’s winning a boxing match because I understand and see the minutiae of boxing, I ask my girlfriend (who’s never fought a day in her life) who’s winning because she knows too little to know anything other than the answer to that singular question, and it’s because she can sense it- the wave of whomever may be winning that fight. I see that with cannabis, the industry in Las Vegas is poised for massive gains but only if others step into a position of vested interest to help, and that can only come through the personalization of cannabis experiences. I plan to make it personal for my friends in the industry and everyone else involved by creating a community for cannabis that is upscale, business savvy, well informed and most of all, willing to take action! You can hurt nameless faces, but you can’t hurt members of a community when those in it care about so many others and their issues. This stands strong because they’ve "broken bread" together, sat together, smoked together, and laughed together The human connection is the most beautiful thing in the world and it has created worlds, and I want to continue to create a new world for cannabis lovers in Las Vegas.
DS: What is your relationship with cannabis? SS: My background is Samoan, I grew up on a small island in the
South Pacific. Cannabis in Samoa is not stigmatized, and you thought Hawaii was relaxed. In Samoa, our society sees the deep cultural benefits with none of the legal nonsense here in the United States. We’ve bred some of the most talented athletes in the world of the NFL, boxing and rugby. I would think it’s safe to say that probably 95% of these types of athletes partake in some form of cannabis. It is not known to be anything other than what it is- a plant with natural healing capabilities.
DS: Where can people contact you and what can we expect in the 2019? SS: You can expect a Las Vegas cannabis first, with many events to
follow- take elements of “Life is Beautiful" and mash it together with "First Friday" and BOOM, you’ve got Sativa Sean’s Bud Bash! I can’t say too much other than it’s a highly sought after private event, it’s going to be glorious for the community, and since it’s my birthday, I’m going to be giving out swag bags that will absolutely blow your mind! My creative director, Seth, has helped me to create a branded experience along with an all access “Golden Ticket” if you will, that will have so many clambering to have as a Las Vegas collectible, as it’s the first of its kind. My promotional director, Dr. Bluntston, is speaking with industry partners and bringing to life ideas that
\\ #702VCM \\ VEGAS CANNABIS
he has been harvesting since his involvement in the legalization movement began in California in the 1990’s. My Art Director, Dawn Starr, is developing a top notch Artist Village that will transport the viewer into other dimensions. My event director Auriel is being herself, the Kannabis Queen of Las Vegas and navigating all the many aspects that our event will entail. It doesn’t take a great man to stand on the shoulders of giants, but it takes a smart man to recognize them. Seth and I are already developing our Bud Bash for 4/20. Think black tie, Great Gatsby and a Waldorf Astoria ball for cannabis elites! The Golden Ticket for this event will be a beautiful golden coin invite concept that we just can’t stop grinning about.
DS: Why do you love Las Vegas? SS: 1. Great Weather (minus 7 weeks).
2. Great People - the friendliest selfish people anywhere. 3. Sports - All day long and you can bet on them. 4. Gaming - At any minute, you can reverse your financial future if you don’t mind risking it. 5. Shows - Any taste, any day, any time, any price. 6. Nightlife - I’ve done things that make Caligula look like Spongebob. 7. “After Hours” Nightlife - I’ve done things that make Torquemada look like Carrot Top. 8. Single Life - It is a pleasure to live here! There are more beautiful women in one square mile of Las Vegas than all of Tonga. 9. Cost of Living - I’ve lived in San Francisco, Laguna Beach, Beverly Hills, and been to 26 countries, for the value and quality of life, and relatively speaking, it’s quite inexpensive to live here. 10. CANNABIS - Finally, the pendulum has reached the correct side, the horns of common sense have touched the wall and now it’s time to build the community.
DS: Do you have any advice for entrepreneurs trying to get their business off the ground? SS: In the Infantry, we have what’s called the Rule of 3: Give a soldier 3 objectives and he will carry them out. Give him 6, and he’s 20% effective, or possibly dead. 1. NEVER, EVER, EVER,..GIVE UP....EVER and 2. BE NORMAL IF YOU’RE TALENTED - for those creative types, (like me who suffer ideas and energy waves endlessly) only work when you’re inspired to work but, make sure you’re “inspired” from 8am to 6pm daily and 12 to 6pm on weekends. My favorite book is ’The War of Art’(Pressfield). Distractions aren’t there to slow you down, they’re there to kill you. Keep a schedule, fight distraction. 3. Always keep your house immaculately clean and organized. Until you’ve made your bed, you don’t have the right to tell anyone anything. Leadership by example. I learned that in the Infantry. >>> STAY BUZZED Experimental-rockers the Melvins By Jarret Keene
reject irony, embrace happy accidents
ime flies when you’re getting your brain fried and your eardrums blown out by the Melvins- the loudest, most challenging, and absolutely super-charged (pre-) grunge band to ever tread the planet. Indeed, it’s hard to conceive that four decades have gone by since singerguitarist Buzz Osborne and drummer Dale Crover (the core Melvins members) broke new ground with their first fulllength, Gluey Porch Treatments. The record was so fierce it drew the attention of a young Kurt Cobain, who would serve as the band’s roadie before launching his own group (Nirvana). Unlike many other Pacific Northwest bands that eventually imploded, the Melvins continue to churn out album after album (averaging at least one release every year) without a dip in quality. Moreover, Buzz and Crover are currently boasting not one, but two bass players, Steven McDonald (Redd Kross) and Jeff Pinkus (Butthole Surfers); the low-end rumble is something to behold, and to absorb. This particular bottom-heavy lineup has been documented on the Melvins’ latest release, Pinkus Abortion Technician- playing on the title of an infamously abrasive record by Pinkus’ former band (the Surfers) called Locust Abortion Technician. “’The Surfers’ were important to me,” says Osborne during a recent phone chat with VCM. “I saw them perform in the early ’80s, when they only had that first [eponymous] EP out, and I was in love with them from the get-go.” Buzz insists he always keeps an ear out for something left of center. And he’s usually impressed when he crushes on a band that millions of other people also like (like, say, Led Zeppelin). He still can’t figure out why the Surfers didn’t sell millions of records. But he won’t go so far as to say his own band is any more successful or important than the Surfers in terms of the evolution of alternative music. “To me,” he says, “in terms of legacy, the only difference between the Melvins and the Surfers is that we’re still doing stuff and they’re not.”
64
What the Melvins do is actually, at times, startlingly imaginative. For example, the band’s “Stop Moving to Florida” is a medley-cummashup of the James Gangs “Stop” and the Surfers’ “Moving to Florida” (which originally appeared on the Surfers’ Cream Corn EP in 1985). It’s surprisingly, if aggressively, accessible during a moment when most rock music sounds like polished plastic. Furthermore, “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, a savage cover of the
iconic Beatles song, is frustrating if you ponder how it might have changed the direction of rock had it been had recorded and released in the ’90s-grunge heyday. The Melvins would’ve made boatloads of money and done us all a favor by pushing pap like Florida-grunge band Creed off the radio and the charts. “I didn’t think to do it until now,” says Osborne, 54. “But I seriously doubt our take on it would’ve sold a ton of copies. I get to hear albums well before the general public does, and I can never pick out what anyone will end up liking. It’s not that I’m perverse, and we’re not just covering the Beatles to troll people. It’s probably the biggest misconception people have about the Melvins- that we only do stuff to get a rise out of people, to take the piss out of something. Everyone imagines themselves to be open-minded, except when it comes to us. Sometimes people get the wrong idea, that we’re satirists. Or ironists.” The Melvins’ Beatles cover is especially good because the band zeroes in (or I should say, stagger-stresses) the chord changes within the verses (and between verse and chorus) in a way that really transforms the song. It presents something new, which is more satisfying than listening to, say, Weezer’s cover of Toto’s “Africa.” “We were very inspired by the Moving Sidewalks [1968] cover of that song,” says Osborne. “The Sidewalks were the very first band [ZZ Top guitarist] Billy Gibbons joined. We must have heard their cover a long time ago...more than 15 years ago...and we did a live version of it, or part of it, and we finally got around to recording it last year.” Indeed, the Melvins have long enjoyed playing surprising covers, which have been a big part of the band’s set from the beginning. Osborne finds the challenge exciting, putting a new spin on an established, beloved song, all in the name of musical fun. Osborne also takes pleasure in playing songs written by other Melvins members. You’ll need some Vaseline for the chafing that hardcore track “Embrace the Rub” will give you on first listen. “[Bassist] Steven McDonald wrote that song, and it was definitely fun to put a guitar part over it. The majority of Pinkus Abortion Technician was written by other members in the band, which was a relief, because nine months before, we did a double album for which I mostly wrote all the tracks.”
VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM
Another Pinkus highlight is “Don’t Forget to Breathe” its heavy, low-end lurching quality mixed with steel drums, and the vocal harmonies are beautifully complex. “I think people would be quite surprised how we work,” says Osborne. “And we’ve done it for so long now, it’s hard to think differently. We’re big accidentalists, we’re not too precious; we’re not worried about how right or wrong something is. As a songwriter it’s nice to have a general idea and then trust the musicians to provide something you haven’t thought of. You get that from playing with guys when you let them off the leash. They know what to do, they’ve been in the music industry their whole lives. It’s counterproductive to think you can control them.” One thing Osborne tries to control is the career of his band. Anything good in his life came from music- making a living, meeting his wife. For him, it’s all connected, all about viewing
\\ #702VCM \\ VEGAS CANNABIS
himself as a working-class artist who sweats for every nickel, while often forgetting to sweat. “I’ve always looked at our band as a performance art project rather than a musical band,” he says. “I don’t feel like I’m working all the time even though we’ve done north of 2,000 shows and released a shit-ton of records. I feel like I’m massively fortunate to go out on stage, and it makes me better. Until that collapses, why would I stop?”
The Melvins play 172 in the Rio on Saturday, Jan. 12, 9:30 p.m., with hepa-Titus. $23 plus fees. Show is 18 and up. For more info, go to caesars.com/rio-las-vegas/things-to-do/172.

SAY HELLO TO George Huitron I’m George Huitron. I’m a 25-year old Spina Bifida and Scoliosis patient who has been successfully using cannabis since the age of 15. Doctors had been prescribing heavy drugs for my conditions, and they weren’t completely helping my pain because I was also born with one kidney. Using prescription medication hurts my kidney and is hard on my system. I turned to cannabis for a more natural alternative treatment, and one that wasn’t damaging to my internal organs. I have been notifying my doctors that I consume cannabis for my Spina Bifida and Scoliosis condition, and so far, it’s been working much better than pharmaceutical pills. Through my choice to use cannabis, I have proven to my doctors that it really does work for chronic back pains. I am on a mission to change the way the community thinks about cannabis. With the help of my condition, I am in a position to show the results that I achieve with cannabis as opposed to pharmaceutical

medication. I am living proof that cannabis works! I have been recommending cannabis to more and more people for their chronic pain. I want to help change the way that patients view cannabis based on the stigmas that society has put upon it for so many years. It is a new day, and cannabis is finally (slowly) being accepted as a way to cope with chronic pain, illness and all sorts of conditions. Personally, I strongly recommend CBD products to people who are looking for relief. I am a true testimony that CBD helps relieve pain as well as inflammation in the body. For my own treatment regimen, the CBD company that I have been working with is “Anthony B’s”. This company’s CBD gels and capsules are my go-to products of choice. With one of their 25mg CBD capsules, my back is feeling great! Within fifteen minutes of taking the product, my back pain is totally clear. I highly recommend taking CBD for all chronic back pains. It works for me!

>>> The Wild Ride to creating ‘Gofire ’ — The story of Co-Founder and CEO Peter Calfee
BY TRIPPY GINGY
owdy Doobies, Pot’ners! I hope y’all are rolling into this new year smoothly, like the rip you’re about to take before continuing on inside this months Trippy World of Gingy. Come Joi’nt me on a wild ride with Peter Calfee, the man behind Gofire. Let’s be blunt, we all wish there was a more effective way to manage our plant medicines. What exactly to partake in, which products, dosage, and so on. It’s perturbing that roadblocks from the FDA and DEA make this harder for the phytomedicinal industries to discover. Peter Calfee, a health technology entrepreneur and investor, and his passionate team are determined to create a path around the system through their company Gofire. Peter Calfee isn’t your typical cannabis industry green trail blazing entrepreneur. This spruce amiable Vermont native, who finished high school out of his Subaru Outback, is only 27-years-old. From a young age he was fascinated by the plant. When he was a teenager, he started seeing weed being used medically due to close loved ones suffering with health ailments desperate to find something that worked without the innumerable side effects that come along with prescription drugs. Cannabis was sometimes used to help curb side effects. This made a huge impact on the young green thumbed Calfee. It wasn’t until 3 years ago, after a devastating car accident that broke Peter’s back, which fired him up to create a needed impact in the cannabis industry. Calfee is living proof that alternative therapies work. After all, he was the first true test dummy on the road to creating Gofire. “When we kicked off on this wild journey 4 years ago,” Peter exceedingly starts, as we sit down for his interview during this years MJBizCon, “we were looking to achieve how we could bring transparency and consistency to this plant. Providing patients with a tool that allows them to track use and effect regarding products that will work best for them. Basing this all on anonymous reviews coming from the community itself. The idea being, the community collective would give insights in regard to what will work better for pain, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, etc. Allowing the new consumer stepping into the space to have an unbiased guide as to which products will work best for them, as well as which doses to start off with...” On December 18, 2014 Peter was approached by a gentleman, John Woodbine. “I can’t claim all of the credit.” Peter humbly states. “It was a blind date, one of our mutual friends connected us. John said he wanted to build a vaporizer. He wanted to develop a product from the ground up to solve the problem of inconsistency and control.” This was the start of a promising partnership and product they were both personally compelled to advance.
70
The first thing they wanted to tackle was dose control. Within 3 months, they developed a prototype that vaporized a precise 2.5mg extrusion. From there they realized they were missing a huge piece of the puzzle. They gained control over dose intake, but did not have a systematic formula that could breakdown what consisted within said dose. Gofire needed to know the chemical makeup contained within each cartridge. That is when they got even more tech nerdy and created a way for the Gofire Inhaler to transmit this information to their user friendly smartphone app. “When we made that jump we realized this app could act as a digital diary, a patient journal. Where I, as a patient, can track how different products are working for me. Now, I can go back into my personal use history and actually see the efficacy change over time.” “From there we were able to aggregate all the anonymous patient feedback coming into our system. We realized we could develop a community centered, review driven product guide. A guide where new and old consumers could find helpful dose information based on the collective community reviews.” I am on the edge of my seat! As a medical user, this is exactly what myself and others have been searching for. Peter continues, “instead of having to ask about specific chemical compounds contained within that product and trying to understand the makeup of this complex plant, we found a way to simplify the information. Now patients can search for specific ailments like insomnia, pain, anxiety, PTSD and it will show them the products available within their area that will best help, based on the collective feedback. Now patients know where they can go and purchase those products, and give them insight into what really is going to work well for them and give them the relief they are looking for.” Yes, I know your pinching yourself, but you can let go now… it is a dream come true! Gofire is projected to revitalize the Nevada cannabis medical market by summer 2019. Set your calendars and don’t forget to upload the Gofire app and become part of the growing community. Designed to help us all understand how plant based medicines fit into each of our lives, Gofire and the community objective is to understand alternative medicine on a higher level. Make sure to be a part of it! If you would like to see my video interview with Peter Calfee at MJBizCon, you can find it on my YouTube channel and Instagram @Trippy_Gingy. Until next month my sweet little Pot’nerds, have a Doobular New Year’s and dank you for reading! —Trippy Gingy

Did you know that milk is the gateway drink to alcohol? Yep, it’s true. Pretty much everyone who drinks alcohol started with milk. Just sayin… I was never interested in stronger liquids until I pounded a tall glass of milk. Two Roots introduces this non-alcoholic (less than 0.5%) beverage, infused with a little THC. This is the first time that I have experimented with a THCinfused beer. I liked the crafty flavor of the Sonder Blonde Ale. It's just a shame that they don’t sell them by the six pack.

I don’t believe it! Chewy, sweet salt water taffy right here in Las Vegas! I don’t have to vacation at the Embarcadero to sink my teeth into a chunky, gooey piece of peach taffy. I need more of this in my life. One piece is torture, instead of getting a single piece you may want to go for the 10-pack! Grace Notes are music to this cat’s ears.

REAL SUN GROWN GG#4
Sweet. We’re gonna turn this gorilla into drippy glue. We’ve seen this #4 a time or two before. I’m heating up the Rosin Tech rosin press and I’m gonna bless your lungs with some warm, fresh solventless rosin. GG#4 is a great strain to squeeze into oil. You can’t fuck it up if you run this flower at 230 degrees for 30 seconds. Rosin pressing flower can be tricky. Be careful not to let it sit on the press too long before the squish. Love this monkey glue.

REAL SUN GROWN Bruce Banner #3
This is another herb that will likely see the inside metal plates of my Rosin Tech press. The flower from Real Sun Grown has improved noticeably the last few times I’ve checked it out. This has no myrcene in it whatsoever, so if you’re not the sativa type, STAY AWAY FROM THIS STRAIN! It’s not for the weak-lunged or anyone who is anxiolytic. If you’re prone to freaking out, pass on this and try something slow. This one makes your mind go. Buckle your helmet.

REAL SUN GROWN FCC
So the FCC won’t let me be, or let me be me, so let me see. They tried to shut me down at some dispensaries, but it feels so empty without me, so. Fuck that! Roll it up, skip, put some to your lips. Cuz this shit’s about to get heavy. Mitch Bisson settles all my lawsuits without me. The Federal Communications Commission can not censor a free publication, so I’m free to say and smoke whatever the fuck I want. Right now I think I’ll smoke the FCC. Will the Real Sun Grown please stand up? This shit is fire and a good deal at any of the Canopi dispensaries.

REAL SUN GROWN Strawberry Lemonade
These nugs are getting packed into my bowl. I’m gonna smoke them and crawl into a hole. My sweet, precious flower, I must devour you now like Dole Strawberry Lemonade. Shotgunned it, pounded that glass bowl of Strawberry Lemonade straight to the head in a monster hit, and I must admit that my thumbs are like sausages and can’t type the shit that I wanna spit. What was that? I forget. My eyes are rolling backward and I think it’s time to quit. Just let me sleep for an hour or three. Look at you, looking at me, looking at the insides of my eyelids. Strawberry Lemonade under the Canopi sounds nice. Break out the hammock?

KENNY’S Java Baked
KENNY’S Raz Krisp
I usually smash the whole pouch of Kenny’s shortly after I snap the photograph. One candy gets popped for the photo reward. Then I can hear my evil conscience telling me that I deserve another, and another until it’s past the point of no return. Who leaves 4 or 5 potato chips in the bag for the next snacker? That’s messed up, right? I would never do that, and tease someone like that. That’s like approaching a pink rectangle box that you know can only have a donut or maybe more. But it’s empty, except for that bullshit assgasket tissue paper and some crumbs. That dude that ate that last donut and couldn’t even throw away the box doesn’t deserve Kenny’s THC Infused Chocolates. That’s another reason I ate all 12 pieces. Wait, 11? Am I that high? I need to discard this empty Kenny’s pouch and that empty pink box too so I don’t disappoint any of you.
Round 2… whew what did Kenny do? I got my Java Baked and my wake-and-bake on too. My love for Kenny’s grows greater as I chew. It’s as if he always knew and always knows what to do. What would Kenny do? He would smile and take care of business, because Kenny is not a hypocritical, conservative, alcoholic. Kenny minds his own business. So you should mind yours. When I polish off this bag of Kenny’s in 5 minutes on Instagram, that’s my business. But I’ll make it yours. @whereswildbill #thebusiness

MEDAMINTS Exotic Chai Vitalize
Until now, I hadn’t realized that I need to first vitalize before ever revitalizing. How do I first alize before I do it again. Anyway you wanna break it down, these perforated micro-dose mints can be split from 10mg to 5mg portions. This option helps you create, monitor, and maintain a regular THC dosage schedule. Don’t be getting too freaky with it, but Exotic Chai is the flavor you can savor.

MEDAMINTS Vanilla Mint Energize
I pushed the pop-top and dropped a couple Vanilla Mints. Then, I popped a couple more since i'm convinced that I’ll be fine. I’m a large mammal, and this isn’t my first cannabis rodeo, squirt. Don’t worry about me getting hurt. I’ll crunch in two more too. What are you gonna do? Try and stop me from that side of the ink. Call my wife and tell her what you think while you have another drink. Don’t sweat me since these are Medamints. They’re not pain pills or other pharmaceuticals, no need to be scared. I’ve smashed on edibles since this magazine aired, 52 months. My endocannabinoid system is like a well-oiled machine. I eat Medamints for breakfast in my cereal. Breakfast of Champions.

MARQAHA Sweet Peach Tea THC Infused Beverage
This is a delicacy for my lips to sip on. I could have guzzled this personal-sized bottle of Sweet Peach Tea sizzurp, but the label reads that there are 27.5 servings inside so I’ll attempt to sip this 25 more times or so… 19, 20, 21… and the last few drops make 22. That’s pretty good. Perfect timing too, cause I’m about to cash in for the night. My tummy feels alright. I’m gonna sleep tight.

You know what I didn’t do last summer… I didn’t enjoy a Marqaha Lemonade Black Tea THC infused beverage like I am enjoying right now in the middle of winter. It hits the center of my stomach, and warms up a sweet spot like a good Cognac. I’m not nursing this bottle. Consider it gone after another big swig. Oh you wanted a taste? SCARLET OIL WORKS Gelato Syringe
I love crushing these Scarlet Oil Works syringes. And, Gelato is a tasty flavor as far as distillate goes. They’ve figured out the terpene ratio, and offer a consistent product that I’ve learned to count on. Serve it up when you wanna get faded. I also squeezed some Gelato distillate inside of a king size Real Sun Grown GG#4 joint this morning. That was a terrific pairing that I would recommend to anyone looking for a little boost. Limonene is poppin’, sport. Get some shit done, or get out there and have some fun. Or, just sit there and stare at the fish tank if that floats your boat, matey.

WITH ROB RUCKUS For the past 80 years since hemp has been outlawed, look what has happened. Crops are being genetically modified. Why? Because they are not running a 4th cycle hemp run to clean and replenish the soil. Back in the day EVERY farmer was mandated to grow hemp. They knew it would get the soil ready for new crops. Then in turn the livestock could use the hemp and seed as food. We in turn would get the cannabinoids through the milk and the meat. That’s not happening anymore and look what’s happening! Children are being born with cancer, autism, epilepsy and more. It’s not just smoking, it’s not just the air, not just the garbage we call food, not just the poisons in the water, the asbestos in the walls. It’s the fact that we are missing a staple of our diets. The human body requires cannabinoids! There are cannabinoids in breast milk that teach us hunger. We have an endoCANNABINOID system for a reason. It fuels our immune system. We need a strong immune system to rid the body of bad cells. When the immune system is weak (because it’s not getting what it needs) bad cells are allowed to multiply. That’s where we get the cancer that kills. Everyone has cancer cells in them, it’s just when they get to a level that they multiply so much that they start creating tumors and destroying the vital organs. So what do we need to do to feed our body the cannabinoids it needs? Smoking pot is a wonderful thing. Makes life great, for a little bit. A few hours maybe. But what if you get yourself some concentrated oil of the cannabis plant? That way you’re getting concentrated doses of cannabinoids and if you do it on a daily basis, like any vitamin or supplement, your immune system will be getting the fuel it needs to go after those bad cells and destroy them. It’s also the best thing in the world to replace painkillers and muscle relaxers. The anti-inflammatory properties of cannabis is what has kept me off opiates for 8 years. So basically what I’m getting at is cannabis oil is one of the best things you can do for your health.
84
What I like to do is mix it with coconut oil and put it into capsules. The fatty acids and sugars in the coconut oil will help the body metabolize the cannabis oil. Think of it like vitamins. If you eat a handful of vitamins the toilet’s gonna be bright yellow the next few days. That’s because the body isn’t metabolizing or absorbing it all and it’s passing right through your system and the body isn’t uptaking all it can. Cannabis oil can be the same way. But when we mix with the coconut oil, the cannabinoid uptake is much higher and the body gets the nutrition it needs to do what it’s supposed to do. The body just loves sucking up sugars and the cannabis oil is gonna be sucked up right along with it. (I made a video on YouTube that has a very easy tutorial on how to make the capsules yourself and it tells how much oils to mix for different tolerance levels. Search, “Rob Ruckus Cannabis Oil Capsules” and it will pop up.) Why am I writing a piece on cannabis oil again? Because it’s necessary. I just lost another friend to something that could have been prevented. She didn’t have the knowledge because we haven’t seen each other in years. It kills me that all of this is not common knowledge. But that’s why I will continue doing what I do and spreading this knowledge to people every chance I get. And I hope after you see the positive effects, you will too. Rob Ruckus is a Nevada medical marijuana patient, and budtender at Inyo Fine Cannabis, a long-time Las Vegas resident and cannabis activist, star of A&E’s Bad Ink, musician and host of Ruckus on the Radio.

>>>>> cannabis with DJ 2018 IS A WRAP! Let’s all try to make the... Emerald Triangle “Me So High” Platter
Chef Fred Oh Me So High Orange Sauce
2018 has been a learning experience to say the least. There were many goals accomplished as well as humanitarian efforts, internationally. On December 10, 2018 Parliament voted to pass the “Medical Cannabis Industry Act” in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It finally happened after a years worth of work. This is one of the largest goals that I have set forth to accomplish in my career. Congratulations SVG and ACRES.VC founders for such an opportunity to educate and work in the International Caribbean country! December holds California’s premiere event for organic sungrown cannabis, The Emerald Cup. This year I was invited to speak and create a cooking demo that was 100 percent organic and something out of the norm for infused cuisine, as well as something everyone can cook at home. I created the “Emerald Triangle Asian Me So High Platter” that feeds 10 guests. This dish and educational series was inspired by some local friends who have been collectively fighting cancer for up to 10 years. (I love you, Sisters! You are an inspiration.) 2019 is looking good for the hemp and CBD Industries. Congratulations to the United States people for the dawn of a new era. Where do you fit in? How are you going to capitalize on the new Farm Bill Act? Who can farm Hemp? My group has options. Please email me for more info at cheffn3@gmail.com

Layerz of Flavor Before you read any further, you must understand this: Flavor is everything. My grandmother once told me, “whatever you make in the kitchen, make it good!” This comment reflects our dedication to flavorful experiences. At Exclusive Chefs, what drives us to create interesting and new dishes are the intersections of flavors that compose themselves upon one’s palette. Each flavor must be handled with care to ensure that one flavor does not overpower another. Every flavor profile is a delicacy and should be handled as such. We mimicked the delicate balance of flavors when
“Cookies & Cream” Vanilla Lobster Oil Mason Jar Technique: INGREDIENTS: 1 cup coconut oil 1/8th of cannabis flower, decarbed PROCESS: This can be done on the stove top, crock pot or in the oven. Coconut oil is a great flavor for this lobster. We used 1 cup of oil to one 1/8 flower (decarbed), sealed in a mason jar & burped or crack the lid every half hour. Crock pots work well as they do not boil. Submerge the sealed jar in water & simmer for 4 hours.

infusing the strain “Cookies and Cream” into a vanilla lobster oil. Cookies and Cream presents two noticeable flavor traits that were specifically attractive for this pairing. The cream and sweet flavor notes from the cannabis pair well with the sweet and creamy flavors present in the combination of vanilla extract and lobster oil. Combining all three elements together creates layers of creamy flavors full of richness with hints of sweet to follow on the finish. This recipe for cannabis infused lobster oil is paired with a rare Blue lobster that functions as a medium for our unique cannabis infused lobster oil.
