LOGAN MADER

A PERSONAL CONVERSATION ABOUT MUSIC, CANNABIS AND SOBRIETY
Logan Mader is a record producer and current guitarist of the metal band Once Human but, you may better know him as the former lead guitarist of the band Machine Head. Now living right here in Las Vegas, Logan has embarked on an extensive journey into the cannabis industry. I recently met with him to chat about cannabis, his sobriety and some of the new projects he is currently working on. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Hey Logan, thanks for meeting with me. I know you grew up in California, how are you liking Vegas? LOGAN MADER: I love it here. I am a musician so I was all too familiar with Vegas prior to moving here. I mean, there’s nothing like Cali, but Vegas has been good. SS: That’s cool. Are you still making music? LM: I am. I play guitar for the band Once Human and I am working on a new project, John Widomakr, as well as producing and mixing albums for various artists from all over the world. SS: Nice! And now, you are also in the cannabis industry. Tell me about that. LM: I’ve got my hands in a few cannabis gigs. Most recently I became the new brand manager for 22Red in Nevada. 22Red is founded by Shavo Odajian from System Of A Down. He’s been a good friend of mine for 25 years. SS: That’s great! People do love Shavo and System of a Down… it’s a great brand you are representing. LM: Yeah, 22Red has amazing genetics and the brand is ramping

up nicely in Nevada. Aside from the great product quality, I love how Shavo is so hands-on with all aspects of the brand. He’s not just a celebrity name and face, he really knows what he’s doing and has loads of passion for the cannabis industry. I’m on a mission to help lift 22Red up to number one in Nevada. We have strong strategies involving education, budtender appreciation, incentive programs, contests, giveaways, pop-ups, events and really good looking swag. SS: Giveaways and swag are a great way to remind people of your brand. What else do you do in the cannabis industry? LM: I also do credit card payment processing, for dispensaries and CBD merchants with a company called Greenway Payments. Greenway is the largest and longest standing provider specializing in cannabis for electronic payment processing. SS: Credit card processing, I never would have taken you for a nine-to-five sort of guy. LM: Yeah, me neither. The owner of the company, my friend Eli, I actually met through music. Everything in my life overlaps with music… weed, weed banking, all of it. You know, it's interesting because I've been self employed my whole life. Through music, I’ve been blessed and fortunate and have enjoyed many amazing life experiences. I've never had to work a nine to five job. So when Eli approached me about this opportunity, I had no idea how huge his company was. He thought I'd be good at it and all I was thinking was that it was a really corporate kind of a job for sure. Not really the type of work I would ever see myself doing. I was reluctant, but I took a chance on it, and when I got in there I realized that it was a pretty alternative environment. I mean, I'm dealing with people who sell weed. Most of them are creative, entrepreneurial people,
Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
people like me. Not your stereotypical financial institution. SS: That’s actually pretty cool. Credit card processing is tricky in this industry. What else are you working on in the industry? LM: I also work alongside my good friend, Joe Reed who runs Cali Care Group, a large vertically integrated cannabis company in California. He's been a big mentor to me, I look up to him and I’ve learned alot from him. And yes, I met him through music. I recently started working with Joe on a project called RZDXWLVS (Raised by Wolves). It’s actually a passion project for Joe as he recently lost weight, got sober and began actively working on his mind and health. The concept of RZDXWLVS is to provide a system that utilizes plant medicines to assist people that are actively fighting addiction to more destructive drugs such as opiates, alcohol, methamphetamine, heroin, etc. The route of recovery, and method of fighting withdrawals includes cannabis, kava, kratom and other plant medicines. Some will utilize the plant medicine to abstain from those more dangerous substances and others will use the plants to work through their withdrawals and then become totally sober. SS: This program sounds amazing. Sobriety means so many different things to different people. What about you? Are you sober and if so, what does sobriety look like for you? LM: I’m in the music industry and have always been surrounded by alcohol and other destructive substances. I have used those substances and I have abstained from them at different times in my life. My life's been a series of waves of being sober and being totally self-destructive, party like a rockstar, and then back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Currently I am sober, and for me that means abstaining from drugs, alcohol, sugar… everything, even plant medicine. The only addiction I currently allow myself is caffeine. For me, sobriety is the difference between life and death. I’ve lived that life on tour, on the road all the time and every day was an open bar, a party that never wanted to end. That's the life I've had in the music industry. I've been lucky to live that life but I definitely got sucked into it to the point where I'm lucky to be alive right now. So I'm
really fortunate. I feel grateful that I'm alive and I just finally decided, it was about time. With this sobriety, I came to the realization that I just can't do moderation. It’s not in my operating system. I’m all or nothing. I’ve accepted that in myself and I realized okay, that's just part of who I am. SS: Congratulations on your sobriety. I think, as we get older, we have to make a shift and start taking care of ourselves. You and Joe are actually work out partners, right? LM: We are. In fact, I am working on a product that will also be included in the RZDXWLVS protocol called Go All In. It is an energy and recovery supplement that comes in capsule form and a 2 ounce liquid shot. It’s pure energy and focus that includes a caffeine cocktail from four different sources. It’s a time release formula that’s not jittery and doesn’t cause a crash. It also contains recovery ingredients such as broad spectrum CBD, turmeric, black cumin seed, dry rosemary, MCT oil, and black pepper. We recently brought Shavo in as a partner and VP of marketing as well because he loves Go All In and believes in the great potential of the product. For now, we do the manufacturing right here at our lab in Vegas. SS: That sounds like a great product and certainly something I could see being used within the RZDXWLVS program. Anything you are working on for the future? LM: For sure, John Widomakr is a new project I’m involved in as producer, cowriter and guitar player. This band is way outside my comfort zone… not metal at all. It’s a little bit hard to describe, but really easy to like, and I am loving working on it. Best way to describe it is, Outlaw Country Rap Rock. The lead vocalist, John Widowmakr has become a good friend. We actually both got sober on the same day. We hit the gym together almost everyday and have a strong catalog of amazing music completed and ready to unleash on the world. Our first single, “Raised By Wolves” will drop soon. Watch my Instagram for details about the release. Follow Logan on Instagram @ logandarthmader.
Addiction is a horrific place to be. The team at RZDXWLVS (Raised By Wolves) know the struggles of addiction. They believe there are multiple plant based natural pathways to recovery which includes life recovery, relationship recovery, mental health recovery, physical recovery, and spiritual recovery. They are dedicated to providing an alternative pathway to true freedom, true life, and to whole life recovery. Oftentimes, sobriety failure is due to the physical and mental anguish of withdrawal. The RZDXWLVS team knows there are several antagonist therapies that help people ween off substances; however, they believe there is a natural way, a holistic way to experience the life that is desired, without experiencing the traditional discomforts and pain that come from withdrawal. RZDXWLVS is a group of like-minded people who have all overcome addictions to various substances. Although some of the team adhere to total abstinence, they believe there are multiple pathways to recovery. One of those pathways is to use natural alternatives to the synthetic antagonist therapies that are commonly prescribed to ease withdrawal symptoms, specifically for opiates. They know the first three to seven days are incredibly hard, physically, mentally, and emotionally, and they believe that through an alternative pathway to recovery you will be able to experience withdrawal differently. This experience will lessen the torment of previous withdrawal experiences. In addition to offering a holistic way to recover, they also offer a community of support who knows where you're at and how you are feeling. Weed Guardians Family Tree
BY: STEPHANIE SHEHAN
Supporting the Mantra of Patients Over Profits All this led to some more-than-risky situations on my behalf in the name of this plant. One of which, that left me ultimately removed from the city, for a lack of better word. All due to a Nevada medical marijuana recommendation, a grow house between Vegas and Pahrump, and some shady gray areas in Nevada's laws at the time that unfortunately left me, like many, a victim.
Looking for cannabis genetics? Weed Guardians Family Tree is a great resource for both genetics and information. I recently had the chance to sit down with W.G. and the team at W.G.F.T to find out what they offer and what guidance they can give to those wanting to begin cultivating cannabis. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Tell me a bit about your team. WG: We are known as Weed Guardians Family Tree, W.G.F.T Cannabis Genetics, or simply W.G.F.T. I am the creator, architect, and brainchild of W.G.F.T (Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Boulder.) The company is run by myself and my partner of 19 years, Amanda B. Together, we operate all 3 W.G.F.T locations with the assistance of our faithful "Guardians." SS: I believe you mentioned you now operate out of Colorado - Are you originally from Vegas? If so, what led to your move? WG: W.G.F.T currently has 3 locations that we operate out of. Our current head base is in Boulder Colorado, along with two other inventory locations in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. But yes, it's true, our home for 10 years was Vegas. During those years, the inception and initial ideas of W.G.F.T were created but were never truly put to reality until years later after moving out of the state due to legal issues surrounding the plant. You see, this plant entered my life at an early age, and for me since the beginning it was always something I considered sacred. While those around me seemed to only be focused on the consumption of the plant, I found myself interested in its buildup, history, growth, effects, medicinal benefits, and variations.
18
SS: Tell me about your background. Were you always into cannabis? WG: My background can be as complex as the taste on that new bag of weed that you can't put down. It all started back in the 1980's when I was born out west in California to a couple of Puerto Rican high school sweethearts that had made a break from the island for a new life. Growing up conservative, religious, and protected, cannabis was not something that entered my life until my teenage years. From a young age, I traveled and moved to different parts of the country due to various opportunities my father received. Much of my later childhood years were spent in the northeastern part of Texas. This is where I met my two greatest life loves, Amanda, and cannabis. Amanda, coming from a very similar lifestyle and raising, understood the taboo view and mindset cannabis had in that place and time. Cannabis wasn't discussed, much less celebrated publicly growing up. This was a subject that was left in the shadows. Together though, Amanda and I began our lifelong quest and dedication to cannabis. Over the years, we expanded our interests and our work on cannabis advocacy, education, and cultivation. We attended courses at THC University for additional education and in support of the creators, we are members of NORML in multiple states. We are also members of Team Alexis to help advocate for all patients that need this plant as a medicine for health and safety, and even storm the occasional State Representative's office in efforts to help bring light to the current unconstitutional cannabis laws. Today, we remain true to our advocacy, education, and cultivational roots by running one of the best cannabis seedbanks while simultaneously dedicating time to
cannabis breeding, and also to our other biggest life investments, our children. SS: Are you and Amanda also cultivators? WG: Yes! From the very beginning, I have been interested in cannabis cultivation and breeding. Since the quality of the cannabis during the time and location was low, we had plenty of seeds to grow in any experimental way we could concoct. And believe me, we would! Trial and error on numerous occasions would lead to more growing and research. Occasionally, you could find us opening up some magazines such as Skunk, High Times, and Red Eye and also some books by Bill Drake, Ed Rosenthal, Jack Herer, and Jorge Cervantes. They provided great readings and insight into what seemed to be at the time, an entirely fictional world with what looked like photoshopped pictures of weed compared to the dark, flattened, brick-like weed that was available in our area during that time. The passion continued over time, with many learning experiences along the way from small outdoor grows, to large indoor hydroponic grows. Ultimately, this all led to the organic no-till living soil grows that we use now, in conjunction with the breeding projects that are currently underway. SS: Why the seed/genetics business? How did that come about? WG.: Due to my continuous passion, research, and ever expanding knowledge of the cultivation and genetic expression of the plant, the start of a seed bank was pretty inevitable. It all starts with seed. So, what better way to further expand your knowledge of genetics and breeding, and at the same time help others obtain access to genetics, and share the knowledge of growing that has been obtained over the years as well? I was once asked, "When the Gold Rush was at its peak, who made the most money? Was it the ones looking for gold, or the ones selling the equipment to find the gold?" This resonated with me and the realization hit me like a ton of bricks, opening my mind to what we’ve created today. SS: We get contacted often by patients
Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
asking about growing their own plants, how to get started and the legalities with buying seeds. Any guidance you can give? WG: We always recommend that you are compliant with your local and state laws and regulations when it comes to germinating the seeds you obtain. Cannabis seeds or "hemp seeds" are currently protected under the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 - Subtitle G— Hemp Production.Sec. 297A, and since they contain less than 0.3% THC they are considered hemp and therefore legal to personally obtain as souvenirs and collectables, which is how you'll be sold the products on our site. In saying that, W.G.F.T offers worldwide shipping for all of our products. We simply ask that you use common sense, and to abide by your laws. SS: How important is it to buy seeds from good companies? WG: Extremely important! Everything from how the seeds are obtained, to how they're cared for after the fact, plays a huge role in the customer's experience with those genetics. Nowadays, we have numerous seed banks but who, what, and how they operate remains a mystery, further muddying the waters of authenticity in our community. Along with the ever bothersome issue we have in our field, of remade or knock off versions of genetics, again further confusing hobbyist growers and sometimes even large scale cultivators unfortunately leaving much of their time, money, and efforts to waste. With W.G.F.T, we strive to carry and maintain solid breeder to broker relationships. This way, we can ensure the legitimacy of the products so the end user truly receives what they are expecting to buy. You need to be able to trust your seedbank, and for more reasons than just receiving an order. Your security, privacy, and confidentiality are some of the biggest factors that come into play. With W.G.F.T coming from an older time in the world of cannabis, we completely understand the importance of discretion and dependability. SS: What types of seeds should new growers look for? WG: There are many ways you can go about growing for the first time, and ultimately it comes down to your own preference and what you are looking for (i.e: size, yield, taste & aroma, sex, and overall cannabinoid content.) The most popular route that
new growers seem to be taking is with either feminized or autoflower varieties due to not wanting to be concerned with the loss of time, space, and resources from identifying male plants or having to be concerned with when to flower. On the other hand, many growers also prefer traditional male/female varieties (regs) as they're more natural and some consider a more stable approach. It ultimately comes down to your own preferences. SS: What are your thoughts on how legalization is going? WG: Cannabis legalization… Well, it's been a real double edged sword, hasn't it? On the one hand, we won! The efforts to take this once taboo plant out of the shadows have almost come into full flourish for the entire United States. A majority of the country now accepts cannabis in one form or another, and it's wonderful the positive impacts it has brought to many old and new consumers alike. Like we've said before, we believe in cannabis in all forms whether it be for fabric, textile, fuel, food, spirituality, recreational, or medicinal use. It's almost a save-all in our book. Now, the other side of that blade has come at the cost of insane regulations, taxation that imposes serious burdens on companies, along with the lack of control in quality for a majority of these products being made. Believe me when I say we have a full understanding of the amount of testing and safety protocols in place to provide the consumer a safe end product, but that doesn't mean we'd ever smoke it. And we say "smoke it" because for the most part you really can't get the edible or topical extraction products wrong. In fact, many of them are quite enjoyable regardless of the state you're legally purchasing your items in. It's the smokeable products that have always left disappointment in our hearts, tastebuds, and lungs. Coming from a world where, in the beginning we only knew "the brick", and slowly graduated through time to cultivating, buying, and trading high end connoisseur quality cannabis, this respect and understanding of true high end cannabis has lessened our fondness for legalization. If it isn't going to be done right, why attempt it at all? And we can say many others have the same feelings towards the subject. Too many suit and tie "Chads", as they're most lovingly referred to in our community, are bringing
soulless companies into the industry, and for those unaware of true quality cannabis, it's simply a shame these businesses are able to get away with it. For the ones making the true effort to continue tradition and respecting the work of those before them, it can be seen. That small 10% of growers, hash makers and breeders are taking the extra steps of love and care that many seem to lack. Again, that in itself is another double edged sword because for the world to be able to enjoy the work of these cannabis artists, they would have to increase their productivity and inevitably lower the quality which puts us right back in the box with the rest. Overall, I would say it's a love/hate relationship, and a bitter sweet sensation. Let's see what the future holds for us all! SS: You have a cool logo, what is the meaning behind the King Dragon? >>>>>>>> What is Aspergillus and
Why is It In My Grow Room? By Todd Denkin
Aspergillus is a fungi. It is typically found in soil, on plant matter, and also on people. There are over 200 species of aspergillus, and they are very common. This is because aspergillus grows in many forms of organic matter, in a wide range of temperatures (42-131F) and in low relative humidity levels compared to other fungi (80 - 98%). Because aspergillus grows so easily, many people breathe airborne aspergillus spores regularly. Aspergillus is usually airborne and spreads through air movement. However, if people are going from plant to plant, they can transmit it from plant to plant. It can be inhaled and somebody who is carrying it on their body can also infect plants. People with dust on them from household spores can also pass it from plant to plant. It's usually spread by spores. If those spores are already in the soil or already on one plant, it can be spread anywhere the air blows it. So that means that you can probably find it on your gloves (unless you properly clean them), through airborne transmission, and most likely the ventilation ducts. Anything blowing onto the plants would most likely be a source. Aspergillus spores are tiny, allowing them to travel great distances in the air. Also don’t rule out the idea that it was brought in by dust from the outside or the homes of employees. Cleanliness is the key. Any decaying plant matter or plant matter that has been sitting around to rot, gets moist, or sits there (be it on the floor or in corners or in ducts or in reservoirs or anywhere that plant matter can accumulate) would be a ground zero for an aspergillus to cause contamination. The cannabis flower, leaves, roots, equipment as well as many surfaces are all prone to microbial contamination. The hotter months exacerbate the spread of aspergillus fumigatus because warmer weather causes a natural incubation and the perfect environment for growth. If warm weather is combined with moisture, aspergillus will usually spread exponentially.
22
Contamination can occur at growth, harvest, extraction, or even storage. To keep people and agricultural products safe from aspergillus, it is important for growers to keep a comprehensive integrated management regiment, including: • Diligent disinfecting of work surfaces • Proper PPE use • Environmental control management • Avoiding moisture and condensation on susceptible surfaces Some states screen for Total Yeast and Mold (TYM) as an indicator for the presence of yeast and mold in cannabis. While it is an indicator, this test cannot differentiate between pathogenic and non-pathogenic yeast and mold. Even though some states prefer the total yeast mold route as a broader screening method, other states choose to specifically screen for four pathogenic Aspergillus species that are very difficult to identify on a TYM agar plate morphologically. The reason most states make aspergillus testing mandatory is that when smoking cannabis, the heat created through the combustion does not reach the approximately 200 degrees required to effectively eliminate Aspergillus spores. Some studies have shown that the use of ozone is ineffective on fungus. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20227106/ Citations: Mousavi, B et al. “Aspergillus species in indoor environments and their possible occupational and public health hazards.” Current medical mycology vol. 2,1 (2016): 36-42. doi:10.18869/acadpub.cmm.2.1.36 Terra Vera Corp. Southern Nevada’s Newest Dispensary Focuses on Giving Back It was 35 years ago that Drs. Gard and Florence Jameson moved to the Las Vegas Valley. They planted roots here with the intention of wholeheartedly giving back to the new community they would be residing in. As time went on, they worked tirelessly alongside many of Nevada’s amazing charitable organizations including Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada, the Center for Spirituality in Healthcare, Children’s
Advocacy Alliance and the Nevada Community Foundation. It was the Jameson’s daughters, MJ and Julia who prompted their entry into the cannabis industry. It was upon a visit back home after studying abroad in Scotland that MJ noticed the cannabis industry just beginning to take off here in Nevada. Recognizing that this might be a great business move as well as a way to delve into her love of the cannabis plant, MJ approached her parents with the idea. It was then that MJ found out that her mom, Dr. Florence Jameson really didn’t believe there was very much to medical cannabis as she could not
24
find any medical research that had been done on the plant. So, MJ did what any good daughter would do, she put together twenty pages of research and findings on medical cannabis that had been done in other countries such as Israel. MJ credits her mom for taking the research she gave her and doing an abundance of additional research to successfully conclude that there indeed was something to medical cannabis. Around this same time, MJ’s sister was suffering from a debilitating pancreatic illness and began using cannabis to treat the inflammation and gastrointestinal symptoms. It was then that the Jamesons, as a family, decided to embark on their journey into the cannabis industry. Their entry into the industry came as minority owners in a business that just didn’t allow them to give back to the community in the capacity that had hoped for. Fast forward to 2021, and the Jamesons have now opened Tree of Life Dispensary in North Las Vegas as 70% majority owners, with the ability to partner with local charities to give back in a way that they feel has exceeded their expectations. The Jamesons will be donating all of the profits from their 70% ownership to local Nevada charities and organizations. I had the chance to sit down with MJ to talk about the new venture and the sincerity and love in her eyes when speaking about her family was captivating. She let me know that it is
sometimes difficult to explain her parents to people as giving is truly their passion. When she further explained her parents' love of giving, she clarified that “they love to give and they give a lot, both with money and with their hearts.” To me, this is just something that you don’t find every day. It’s easy to write a check when you are bringing in loads of money. It is much harder to connect with, support and work alongside the organizations that you are donating the money to. Ultimately, MJ said that she “hopes she can be half as good of a human being as her parents are.” Each month, Tree of Life will choose different local charities and organizations to partner with. On their radar are medical services, veterans, homeless, LGBTQ and social justice organizations. For the holidays, Tree of Life has partnered with Volunteers in Medicine for Southern Nevada which is an organization that the Jamesons founded ten years ago. Volunteers in Medicine was established to serve Southern Nevada’s most vulnerable and medically in need by providing medical care for those that do not make enough to afford insurance and also fall through the cracks of the Medicaid or Medicare system. “Dental to mental” is their tagline as the care provided covers all aspects of medical care. Please plan to visit the dispensary for their grand opening celebration on December 11th. And, be on the lookout for their second location which will be opening in a few months. Tree of Life Dispensary is located at 150 E. Centennial Pkwy, #114, North Las Vegas, NV 89084. My Path to Medical Cannabis BY: SARAH SCHWEFEL
Flying into Las Vegas for the first time in January 2018 I knew my life would change forever. I came to Las Vegas to marry my best friend, however we had no idea how much our lives would change from that moment forward. Cannabis had just become available for purchase in Las Vegas in July of 2017, and I could not wait to go to a dispensary. Living with chronic pain and an incurable progressing condition, I had used cannabis illegally in my home state of Wisconsin for survival and relief, and I needed something to get through the trip. On the way to the dispensary I remember trying so hard to hide my tears and pain. My body was screaming from the four hour flight and all I kept thinking was there is no way my body can handle a three day vacation and walk down the aisle to get married. Everyone says their first time in a dispensary is life changing and for me it is literal in every sense of it’s being. Walking in I was blown away that, first, there was legal cannabis! Coming from Wisconsin where it is a schedule one next to heroin, it was shell shocking. I went to the budtender and he could tell I needed help, asking me to explain my ailments so he could assist me the best he could. I walked out with the strain Grape Stomper and lit up as soon as I could. After smoking a joint we were making our way to our room, and a wave hit me. A wave of relief that should have been impossible. In that moment I crumbled to the ground in tears thinking, is this what it feels like before I lose my ability to walk? But it was a relief. Relief I had not felt in many years, and that the doctors said was impossible. Living with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome has changed my life as it was, and everything I thought my future could be. I have a connective tissue disorder that literally affects all areas of the body. I have gastrointestinal problems, heart problems, blurry vision, constant
26
pain and muscle spasms, dislocating joints, and a spine that is crumbling within, with now over 10 spine injuries and unfortunately even more has been affected. Our trip to get married was my last hurrah. In Wisconsin I was rapidly getting worse needing help to take the ten steps to my bathroom, no longer able to make myself food, or bathe myself most days. Very quickly I was becoming fully bed bound, and I no longer wanted tomorrow to happen. I was losing my hope, and my will to continue living with so much pain, going doctor to doctor with no help, just hearing, “sorry this is your life and there is nothing to be done.”
My husband grabbed my face and said we are moving here. No matter what, we will get you here. Flying back to Wisconsin after that trip was devastating for me. I was leaving hope and returning back to laying in bed every single day, staring at the same four walls of my room that began to feel like a jail cell. My body no longer had a way in and out. My husband kept saying we will move, but within, I doubted it fully. How could we just up and move across the country? It seemed impossible to me, but eight months later in August of 2018 my husband, mother, myself, and our two cats and dog made the 1,800 mile drive to Las Vegas.
In those moments of tears and relief so many words the doctors said were running through my mind; no hope for better, never improving, and there is nothing to help the pain I was suffering with day in and day out.
Moving to Las Vegas for legal cannabis and the dry climate here combined for my health saved my life. It gave me a future I wanted again, a hope for tomorrow, and a life I thought was impossible- one outside of my bed. Cannabis did things for me that many doctors said would never happen, and because of that, I am now a passionate advocate for the plant and always searching for more knowledge. In August of 2020 I became certified in endocannabinoid studies to be able to help myself and others better medicate with the plant; to learn the science behind cannabis and learn how it makes miracles happen for me daily. I advocate passionately and yell from every mountain top I can what cannabis does for me, speaking at various events, podcasts, and through my writing as well. I share my journey openly with no closed doors on social media, because if one person can see my journey, hear my story, and it can help them, then somehow it helps make this all worth it. I have been engulfed in darkness before, with no light, not even a glimmer. I share my story, I fight for access and affordability for all, because no one should be suffering when there is an option that may be able to help.

Kandyce COLE Budtender at Jade dispensary Kandyce Cole is a Budtender at Jade Dispensary in Las Vegas. Kandyce's incredible customer service skills and product knowledge has proven to go a long way, she has a loyal customer base and always provides excellent service to every customer she engages. What attracted you to the cannabis industry and how did you get your start? What attracted me to the industry was being able to provide everyday people with natural, alternative medicine in a safe, friendly, educational, and comfortable environment. I started in the industry, firstly, as a medical patient, then became a regular, myself. Eventually, I was offered an opportunity, and I love what I do. What kind of advice would you give a new budtender on building relationships with local customers? Sometimes, we are the ones who people turn to for help; whether it be for party favors, pain, sleep, PTSD, etc. So I say, be real, be helpful, give them service that you would want in return. We all have different reasons why we use cannabis, and at the end of the day, it's still medicine- so it's not always about the high dollar sale, or what's popular, it's about creating the right vibe and you will always have people coming back to see you. What resources do you use to stay up to date with all the changes and new things in the cannabis industry? Mostly my resources come from word of mouth, visiting other dispensaries, and speaking with the local vendors. My patients come from all over, and always have some
28
tidbit to share. In your opinion, what are three things that will make a budtender successful? Knowledge, charisma, and the ability to listen. What's the most rewarding thing you've accomplished as a budtender? The most rewarding part of being a budtender, to me, is seeing the results in my patients. The day that they come in smiling because they're having a pain free day, or even celebrating their sobriety from opiates or other drugs. It's not just one experience, or a singular rewarding moment, it's many moments that make the entire experience as a whole very rewarding. What kind of changes/improvements would you like to see in the industry? It is a pretty new industry but it's blown up so big and so quickly that this is a viable career choice for many. I'd like to see the industry grow to be able to offer competitive wages, healthcare options, sick leave etc like any other corporation. We offer something people need and want so it's safe to say this industry isn't going anywhere. What's your favorite way to consume? Mostly I like consuming flower, and edibles for pain and better sleep. What's the most challenging part about being a Budtender? When the system goes down and you have a line out the door and many eyes staring at you while you scramble around. Do you have a favorite strain or terpene profile? No particular strains, I mostly go off of terpenes. Linalool, limonene, and myrcene are my go to. Whatchu been smoking on? At the moment, Qualcan CFV, Circle S Farms Sour Diesel x Lemon Kush and MMG Peanut Butter Breath.

CARLEY SPANEL Budtender at THRIVE CANNABIS Carley Spanel is a budtender at Thrive Cannabis Marketplace in Reno, Nevada. She has quickly become one of the local's favorites by offering excellent customer service and endless product knowledge. We spoke with Carley about working as a budtender and how it has had a positive impact on her life. What attracted you to the cannabis industry and how did you get your start? I was attracted to the cannabis industry because I wanted a job I would never get tired of while being able to be myself. The cannabis industry is definitely expanding everywhere across the US. This is my first job in the industry here at Thrive Cannabis Marketplace. There were many challenges at first, but with support from family and friends my persistence paid off. What kind of advice would you give a new budtender on building relationships with local customers? Being social absolutely helps a new budtender 100% of the time in establishing new relationships. If you consume and are confident in your ability to make honest recommendations of something the customer is actually looking for they will always come to you for advice in the future. What resources do you use to stay up to date with all the changes and new things in the cannabis industry? Keeping up with cannabis compliance is definitely a big part of my reading, the last thing I want to do is be the last one to know. Staying up to date with Metrc is also huge so I can get the customer as much product they need. New strains and products come out all the time, so reading terpene profiles and trying out as much product as possible is key in keeping people informed on new things.
In your opinion, what are the top three things that make a budtender successful? Top 3 things in my opinion that make a budtender successful are, personality, product knowledge, and the ability to listen to a person's needs. What's the most rewarding thing you've accomplished as a budtender? I absolutely love getting to see a person come in who's never come into a cannabis shop before and then being able to help them start something they are comfortable with for the first time. I always ask them to come back and tell me what their experience was. Seeing people being open to cannabis when they never have before is so rewarding. I've even gotten my parents to shop with me. What kind of changes/improvements would you like to see in the industry? I would actually like to see the cannabis industry be able to be more like the alcohol industry in regards to regulation. I think we should just legalize it federally, with regulation and taxation. Open the door to free enterprise opportunities for new entrepreneurs and jobs. What's your favorite way to consume? Cartridges are my absolute favorite way to consume cannabis. I love to be able to have high amounts of terpenes all at the same time for specific ailments or to get extremely lit. What's the most challenging part about being a budtender? The most challenging part about being a Budtender is not taking everything home. There's always an array of new things coming out and I always want to get everything that comes out. Do you have a favorite strain or terpene profile? I like a great sativa that's got a lot of terpinolene, as much humulene as possible, with a little limonene. Whatchu been smoking on? I am currently smokin some Do-Si-Do flower, some G13 shatter, and a Blue Maui cart.

egardless of when they were raised or when they first became interested in sports entertainment, any professional wrestling fans must admit the unconventional golden era status of the World Wrestling Federation/ Entertainment’s Attitude era and how it was unlike any other period of wrestling in both the WWE or any other wrestling promotion. Excluding the wackiest and sometimes the most controversial storylines that developed during the period of roughly 1997-2002 within the WWF and later the WWE for a moment, the sheer per capita of talent among wrestlers at this time would never be matched again in professional wrestling history. Mick Foley’s many personalities, Olympic gold medalist turned Intercontinental Champion Kurt Angle, Chyna, The Big Show, fellow University of North Texas alum Stone Cold Steve Austin and one of the best Canadians and hilarious heels to ever wrestle, Chris Jericho. Divas like Trish
Stratus, Lita and Sable. The emergence of many tag teams and groups that would become hall of fame contenders and even inductees in their own right also defined the Attitude era somewhat. Degeneration X, The Hardy Boys, The Brood, The Dudley Boyz, The APA, The Undertaker and his brother Kane, the latter of which went on to become mayor of Knox County, Tennessee. The rise in prominence of the Guerrerros and the legendary feud between Stone Cold and real-life WWE CEO Vince McMahon. It was an era of professional wrestling that was risque and adult-oriented in ways that would result in mountains of complaints to the FCC for the frequently over-the-top content over only a couple of years. The wacky and unexplainable antics of this era frequently also bled out of the squared circle and into other wrestling programs such as main competitor World Championship Wrestling’s programming and the Xtreme Football League- one of the most bizarrely unsuccessful attempts at combining wrestling with American football and creating a competitor to the National Football League in the process. When discussing the most memorable character of the Attitude era, it’s impossible to pick just one. Even if part of a tag team, each wrestler had an individual personality that stood apart from any other operating wrestler in the WWF. One such tag team with four different wrestlers who would carve out their own careers in professional wrestling was the Nation of Domination. Operating during the first few years of what would become the Attitude era, their members included wrestler D’Lo Brown

who is now a commentator for Impact Wrestling and Ron “Farooq” Simmons. Simmons, who later became known for his “Damn!” catchphrase and was even a member of the aforementioned APA with current Fox Business Network commentator John “Bradshaw” Layfield, has the honor of being the first African American World Champion in professional wrestling history according to the WWE. The third member of the Nation of Domination was a wrestler who started under the name Rocky Maivia before shortening his name to The Rock. For those who don’t follow professional wrestling history, you may know this wrestler by his far more famous name, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The fourth member of the Nation of Domination was Kama Mustafa, a wrestler who would later go on to wrestle as a personality so memorable and outstanding that it earned the man portraying these characters, Charles Wright, a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame. A wrestler named The Godfather, arguably the most flashydressed wrestler even in the ring with the most colorful and vibrant outfits. A charismatic performer who was openly every characteristic of a pimp who would tell the crowd to “smoke a fatty with this pimp daddy”, “light that blunt up” and remind the crowd that pimping in fact isn’t easy while being accompanied by a large group of women. When a wrestling fan is asked about wrestlers that defined the hedonistic yet hardcore and outlandish Attitude era, they’ll almost certainly mention The Godfather.

CANNABIS ADVOCACY
Even to this day, Wright still travels regularly to fan meet and greet events as a prestigious alum of WWE and a 2016 WWE Hall of Famer.
of one of the longest winning streaks at Wrestlemania, The Undertaker. During our conversation, Wright referred to his longtime friend as “Taker”. Wrestling as The Master of Pain and The Soultaker, Wright later unofficially followed his teammate across promotions both domestically and internationally.
“The Attitude era. Man,” Wright said during his acceptance speech at his Hall of Fame ceremony, “if you weren’t a part of that, go on WWE Network and check it out. Because… there was nothing like it.” Although somewhat surprisingly, Wright never envisioned himself as a professional wrestler. In fact, he didn’t even watch much professional wrestling at all while growing up in the Northern California area of Sunnyvale which is more modernly known as Silicon Valley, Wright was actually a fan of roller derby. A child raised in the 1970’s, roller derby had a far larger following at this time in Northern California and events would regularly sell out venues such as The Cow Palace while wrestling events didn’t come close to that attendance. With a stature of six foot six and built like a linebacker, Wright played football in college at none other than The University of Nevada at Reno, the same alma mater that one his sons graduated from and another is currently attending. After graduating in 1984, Wright began working at the Crazy Horse here in Las Vegas in a multitude of roles. During his employment there, a film starring Rocky Balboa himself, Sylvester Stallone, chose this club as a filming location. The 1987 film “Over the Top” centered around a long-haul truck driver winning back his distant son by becoming a champion arm wrestler. The film featured a couple wrestlers who became legends in their own right, hardcore pioneer Terry Funk most notably. While technically working on set, Wright was told by a few of the film crew members that he should consider professional wrestling. Growing up on NorCal roller derby and being more of a biker himself, he was hesitant about giving sports entertainment a try. That is until the heavily wrestling-
influenced film crew mentioned Bam Bam Bigelow, a titan of the “big man” archetype in wrestling. Standing at 6 foot 4 and nearly 400 pounds, Bigelow had several distinct tattoos, the most unique of which was a large flame tattoo that covered most of his usually bald head. “They told me he made a million dollars in a year.” Wright recollected. As he trained at the New Jersey-based wrestling gym The Monster Factory, the man who would become The Godfather met someone who any wrestling fan no matter how casual would instantly recognize. Usually the far more animated counterpart to the usually more stern Jim Ross, Wright met and began working with The King himself, Jerry Lawler. The King even had the honor of being the first wrestler that Wright would fight during his career which would become illustrious. “My first match was with Lawler in Memphis maybe around 1988 on a Monday night, which if you know wrestling history is a big deal. My very first match, I won the Memphis Heavyweight Title against The King. I started listening to Jerry a lot.”
In 1990, when “Taker” went to wrestle in New Japan Pro Wrestling, Wright followed soon after. Wright greatly enjoyed his time in Japan and found the wrestling styles to be interesting. At this same time in Catch, Wright wrestled with Owen Hart, Scott Hall, Fit Finlay and several other highprofile wrestlers in the same card. Wright recollected about all the German cities he was able to visit during this time, from Dusseldorf to Hanover to Bremen. Upon returning to the States, The Undertaker was now wrestling with the WWF and got his now experienced fellow professional wrestler a tryout in the promotion that would go on to dominate the industry. Hired immediately, the promoters agreed that Wright was certainly built like a heavyweight, but Wright says that they described his face as a “babyface” or a good guy character in wrestling terms. In an attempt to cover Wright’s face and turn his character into a “heel” or bad guy character, WWF created his first character in the brand, a voodoo practitioner named Papa Shango. While Papa Shango received mixed reactions from fans, his next character would earn him a well-deserved spot in The WWE Hall of Fame.
After winning more matches and gaining a presence, the higher ups at the United States Wrestling Association decided to pair up Wright with a “tall redhead guy from Texas named Mark with the stage name of Texas Red.”
A total creation of his very brilliant wife, Wright was initially hesitant about portraying a character who was a pimp based on his own negative experiences with real-life pimps who were far less jovial than The Godfather during his time working at strip clubs in Vegas.
Any wrestling historian will instantly recognize Mark from Texas as none other than the American Badass and a holder
“My wife’s idea was that people needed to see what you’re really like. You’re not a voodoo man, you’re not a militant in the
33
Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
Nation of Domination. You just gotta let people see the real you and when people see your real personality, you’re going to take off.” Wright explained. Along with his wife’s advice, Wright based the character’s persona on his many experiences in strip clubs and the eccentric characters he met during those years. “She came up with the whole idea. I wouldn’t be a mean pimp. She did everything. She had a jeweler making the jewelry, a seamstress making the fur coats and vests.” Wright even divulged that once The Godfather wore an outfit on television once, he never wore it again, always rocking a fresh new outfit. Possibly because it was during the debauchery-laden time of the Attitude Era, many of The Godfather’s catchphrases were cannabis related. “Light up a fatty for this pimp daddy”, “high as a kite”, “it’s 4:19, wait a minute” and so many other catchphrases are all directly related to the friendliest pimp in professional wrestling. Yet for how involved in cannabis culture that The Godfather now is, Wright admits that he didn’t even try cannabis for the first time until he was 27 years old. Being raised in a time when cannabis was still heavily stigmatized, Wright mainly hung around drinkers in his youth. In his Papa Shango phase, “Taker” invited Wright out to Los Angeles from Vegas for the weekend and during his trip, Wright met a fellow biker named Big Worm. A large biker with dreads who sold topquality cannabis, this man served as the Godfather’s first smoking partner. “When I smoked cannabis, I thought you know what,” Wright said, “my shoulder doesn’t hurt anymore. You know what, I don’t walk with that limp I normally have. Then we went to the gym and I had the best workout I ever had. I was like dude, this is great. Then we went and ate and I thought this was the best food in my life. We were at Jack in The Box.” Before Wright transitioned to cannabis, he was “drinking a 750 milliliter bottle of Jack Daniels every day” and consuming all types of painkillers and opiates that run the gamut of pharmaceuticals. Within a year
34
of trying cannabis, Wright slowed down on the drinking and abstained from all pills entirely. “Since 29 years old, I haven’t taken a pill. The heaviest I’ll take now is Aleve or Advil.” And since that first sesh with Big Worm, Wright has become an icon, celebrity and strong advocate for cannabis in multiple ways. Appearing on B Real’s The Smokebox to making an appearance at both the most recent Las Vegas Cannabis Awards and Stone Cold’s The Steve Austin Show to champion for the numerous benefits of cannabis. Wright has even collabed with B Real’s Dr. Greenthumb brand in California for a strain dedicated to his legendary likeness, pimp attire and all. Yet despite his love and association with cannabis, Wright doesn’t ever try to directly convince anyone to begin using cannabis. Instead, he takes a much more personal approach. “Here’s my deal.” Wright explained. “I don’t try to get people to use cannabis. What I do is tell people what it’s done for me. Like Undertaker, he can’t smoke and won’t smoke cannabis. It’s just not for him. So I don’t try to get people to try things. What I tell them is what it’s done for me. It’s preserved me. It’s made me more creative. Everyone who knows me says I’m the most productive stoner they’ve ever met because it motivates me and wants me to do things. I get better ideas and my body feels better.” While he certainly doesn’t appear his age through both appearance and a lively and charismatic demeanor, Wright is 60 years old. At a time when other wrestlers his age have constant health issues, he credits his overall good health at six decades of life and lifestyle compared to other retired wrestlers in their 60’s to a health-conscious diet and cannabis’ qualities of healing. Wright even mentioned that certain members of the WWE administration said that cannabis even makes him friendlier. Possibly because it was during a time when Degeneration X literally invaded the exterior of a WCW program and Undertaker
threw Mick Foley off a 20-foot Hell in a Cell among many other crazy antics, The Godfather never faced much backlash professionally from his pimping and cannabis antics on air. In a time when a wrestler’s persona was literally that of an adult film star, a pimp didn’t seem so offensive in comparison. In fact, he was so loved and remembered by wrestling fans across the country that he still travels across the country for professional wrestler meet and greets and holds a WWE Hall of Fame spot. “Can you believe that? They put a pimp in the Hall of Fame.” Wright joked. “I have a very likeable character. I still look decent and healthy. I show up to the events. They (WWE event organizers) know I’ll be high but they know I’ll be on time and have fun with the guests.” Part of Dr. Greenthumb’s Insane line, The Godfather’s namesake strain tests at 32 percent and Wright even describes it as “the fire”. Eventually planning to incorporate and expand his Instagram-famous Smoke Train brand into a full-fledged cannabis line in the Las Vegas Valley, custom pre-rolls and infused chocolates will be released soon. Totally owned by Wright, it’ll be quite the brand to follow given his immense popularity in cannabis culture. For a cannabis advocate who portrayed many wrestling characters who are universally remembered and/or loved and uses his platform for that advocacy, it’ll be interesting to see how Wright continues to advocate for the plant that’s helped him tremendously while also making an entrance in the recreational market in Nevada.

NOVEMBER HOROSCOPES ARIES (MARCH 20 – APRIL 19) Go easy this month as it will likely be quite intense with the Sagittarius solar eclipse energy on the night of December 3rd and Gemini full moon on the 18th. You may have a lot of feelings you’ve built up from the past year arise all at once. Try to go with the flow and not get too fired up about anything. You may be nervous about spending time around relatives around the holidays so self care to de-stress is important. A nice soothing bath with a 100mg CBD Planet M bath bomb is sure to help calm your nerves. TAURUS (APRIL 19 – MAY 20) We all know slow and steady wins the race and that’s exactly how December is going for you. You’ll be well prepared for the holidays tying up loose ends at the beginning of the month so you can enjoy carefree celebrations with friends and family towards the latter half. Stock up on prerolls to share with a 10 pack from State Flower in the ultra robust strain Peanut Butter Soufflé. With a lot of earthy energy towards the end of the month thanks to Mercury, Venus, and the Sun moving into Capricorn, you should be feeling grounded and in a relaxed mental state. You’re prone to overindulge so just take caution you’re not enjoying yourself too much! GEMINI (MAY 20 – JUNE 20) You are a source of joy for many people this month as you attend different social gatherings. It’s easy for you to stay positive with the holiday spirit and you’ll be floating on cloud nine with all the love and comradery you contribute to. It’ll be hard for you to sit still with all of the excitement! Try a heavy hitting infused preroll pack in Fruity Pebbles by Roar Cannabis to help conserve your energy. By the Gemini full moon on the 18th you may be feeling all over the place and will need something strong to ground you. CANCER (JUNE 20 – JULY 22) December brings a heightened sensitivity to nearby energies so be cautious with whom you spend your time. You’ll enjoy caring for those around you but want to be sure to give your energy to the friends and family that make you feel your best. Your subconscious feelings are heightened by Neptune stationing direct in Pisces on the 1st so go easy on yourself if it seems like you’re riding an emotional roller coaster. We

recommend having a 500mg Jack disposable from Deep Roots Harvest handy to help you deal with the ups and downs, a great strain to keep you feeling cheerful. LEO (JULY 22 – AUGUST 22) You are on fire this month, Leo! The solar eclipse on the 3rd followed by Mars entering Sagittarius on the 13th will give you a lot of energy. So much so, you may have lots of ideas and an enhanced imagination that keeps you from falling asleep. Pickup something that’ll help you get some shut eye like the Wyld Elderberry 2:1 CBN gummies. As you share your excitement for life with those you come into contact with, many people will appreciate being in your company. It’s easy for you to focus on others’ needs which will be beneficial for your romantic and family relationships. VIRGO (AUG 22 – SEPT 22) Enjoy your hard work paying off this month as you’ll have time to spend on some peaceful, creative activities that are good for you. A euphoric strain like Camp’s Bahama Mama would pair perfectly with whatever you decide to do! You may be a bit more introspective and focused on creating a strong foundation for the start of the new year. Neptune stationing direct on the 1st will help clear up communication and promote a deeper connection with your partner or someone whose relationship has been troubling. Spending time with loved ones in a comfortable space will help you recover and reflect on your previous year that was filled with lots of transitions. LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 23) You are in good health and feeling happy about spending time with friends and family over the holidays. Many opportunities for you to share loving gestures, celebratory events, and general benevolence make you feel warm and fuzzy. There may be quarrels that arise but you’ll be able to navigate them with ease thanks to your diplomatic conduct. Don’t let the idea that another year has passed get you down, instead focus on the year ahead which should be a good one for you. A reflective, stimulating strain like Zweet Inzanity by GreenWay Medical is a great way to think of how far you’ve come and what you want for the coming year.
SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 21) Mars in Scorpio until the 13th will have you buzzing around with untouchable energy at the beginning of the month. This may have you feeling restless however you will not be lacking in motivation just try to be patient with those that aren’t on your level. Your intuition will be on point following Neptune stationing direct in Pisces on the 1st, however this may relate to you being a bit more emotional than usual. Many Scorpios will enjoy a well deserved bonus or payout this month so don’t be afraid to treat yourself to something special like Virtue’s Garlic Sherbert #2 live hash rosin. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21) Happy birthday, Sagittarius! It’s your month until the 21st with Mercury in Sagittarius until the 13th while Mars enters Sagittarius that same day. We have a solar eclipse on the new moon in Sagittarius on the 3rd that brings some intense energy which will have you yearning for much needed personal space. It seems as though you’ve been in the limelight since the first lunar eclipse of the year in May 2021 which likely has you wanting to retreat and escape for a bit. Try not to take things too personally at holiday gatherings even though you may be feeling pressure to live up to others’ expectations. Take it easy with a soothing strain like Green Therapeutic’s London Poundcake. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19) Lots of Capricorn energy this month provides a solid basis for finishing the year strong. The past year has brought you increased finances and a stellar reputation that qualifies you for career benefits and much needed time off. Celebrate with a breezy, top notch concentrate like the Miss X Live Rosin by Green Life Productions. You’ll likely experience the success of keen negotiations once Mercury enters Capricorn on the 13th, just be careful not to be too blunt in your communication. Start your vacation before Venus in Capricorn stations retrograde on the 19th which may cause tension in your relationships at home and work. AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 18) Try to live a life of peace and joy this season by staying away from others’ conflicts. The beginning of the month has you obsessing over getting everything done up until Mars moves from Scorpio to Sagittarius on the 13th. After this transition, you
should be feeling more excitement and adventure. As an Aquarian, you’re usually impulsive and detached, finding it hard to adapt to the expectations of family obligations around the holidays. Just be sure to have a discrete option like the Just Edibles Sour Rainbow Belts on hand to get you through the compulsory reunions. PISCES (FEB 18 – MAR 20) You will be feeling more clear headed and aligned when Neptune in Pisces stations direct on the 1st. This increased sensitivity paired with the flexibility that Sagittarius season brings will have you flowing through the holidays. When Mercury enters Capricorn on the 13th, it’s a good time to reflect on your previous year and set goals for the next. Imagine what you’d like to achieve over the next year and create a plan to get there. Enjoy a delicious hybrid strain like Cookies’ Apples and Bananas while you contemplate. Try to stay away from negativity that you can absorb from other people. If you focus on yourself you should be fine and in good health.

After a couple bong rips of Grape Monster, I’m coughing up smoke and breathing fire. Fleur created such a tasty beast here. My eyelids are a little heavy, but it’s subtle. Exploring
with Sarah Jane
By: Sarah Jane Woodall aka Wonderhussy A Vegas-based adventuress exploring weird shit in the desert...and beyond
And even the border towns in the bougie playground of the Tahoe area feel noteworthy — if only for the fact that they herald blessed respite from California gas prices! Crossing from South Lake Tahoe, CA into Stateline, NV doesn’t feel like crossing a state line — you’re surrounded by resort sprawl the entire time. But still, you definitely feel it when you cross that invisible, arbitrary boundary. Don’t fence me in! Don’t tax me, bro! It’s especially noticeable coming over from the Utah side. Gas is more or less the same price in both states, but once you get to Nevada, there’s something even better than cheap gas: BOOZE! Utah’s byzantine liquor laws can be frustrating, but there’s no need to fret once you reach Mesquite, NV where the alkyhol runs freely, cheaply, and at full potency!
Driving down the Interstate, you see it long before you get there — the glow of casinos on the twilit horizon, seductively beckoning you to the land of buffets and slot machines, roller coasters and outlet malls. Just a few more miles of barren sagebrush to go, and you’ll be in Nevada! Anyone who’s ever driven from LA to Vegas understands: crossing the state line is like when the Wizard of Oz goes from black-and-white to Technicolor. One minute you’re speeding along a dark desert highway in a silent California void, next thing, BOOM: YOU’RE IN OZ! Thanks to our legal casinos, the transition into Nevada from any other state is very dramatic, but the settlement of Primm is by far the most dramatic border crossing! Thanks to the large size of the casinos and the stark remoteness of the location, this crossing looms extra-large, and dwarfs the experience crossing into Nevada anywhere else. I mean, what other Nevada bordertown offers Bonnie and Clyde’s death car, steak dinners AND savings up to 75% off suggested manufacturer retail prices?! In my travels I’ve been to all 11 towns on the Nevada state line, and I’m here to tell you: some are bigger than others, some are more scenic than others…but NONE are boring! Even podunk outposts like Denio and McDermitt on the Idaho border are notable for their very existence in the midst of the vast, surrounding desolation. When you’re driving through that lonely landscape, even the faint flicker of a distant gas station inspires hope and wonderment!
50
The only crossing that’s not very exciting is the sprawl of Laughlin, NV/ Bullhead City, CA. Gas is cheap on both sides, booze is cheap on both sides, and weed is legal on both sides…so what’s the point? The only differences are the casinos, and prostitution — and there aren’t any brothels (that I know of) down Laughlin way. Might as well just stay in Arizona! But though all these weird little border towns are interesting in their own way (sorry, Laughlin) in my travels, I’ve found some to be more interesting than others. Here are my personal Top 5... 5. TOPAZ LAKE OK, this place isn’t actually all that interesting, I just couldn’t fit it in elsewhere in this article. Basically just a gas station and fishing lodge/casino on the border south of the Carson City metro area, it merits mention for the simple fact that it’s the last reasonablypriced gas for a very long way. Heading south on US Hwy 395 from here will take you straight into the worst circle of California gas price hell! Bridgeport, Lee Vining, Mammoth Lakes…you won’t find anything approaching cheap gas on this road until you get to Bishop, 130+ miles to the south. If you run out before then, get ready to mortgage your house. 4. BAKER, NV Not to be confused with Baker, CA (home of the World’s Tallest Thermometer) this tiny outpost is clear over on the other side of the state, on the Utah border. While most of the town is technically 7-miles from the state line, there is a bar/restaurant/casino/motel/ gas station smack dab on the actual border that stands out — literally — for the simple fact of being the only visible structure for

something like 1,000 miles in any direction! OK, I’m exaggerating, but not by much! Situated on a particularly desolate stretch of the aptlynicknamed “Loneliest Road in America,” aka US Hwy 50, this place gives “middle of nowhere” a whole new meaning. It’s truly surreal, and has to be seen to be believed! 3. JACKPOT Up on the Idaho border, things are pretty bleak — high desert as far as the eye can see, and only two towns of any meaningful size along the entire 306-mile length. As previously discussed, McDermitt is really only notable for its existence but farther east, the town of Jackpot is a hoot and a half! Several casinos, a liquor store and a weed dispensary not only welcome weary snowbirds on exodus from the frozen north (US Hwy 93 being a major north-south route from Canada to Arizona) they also serve frustrated locals from nearby, straitlaced Twin Falls, Idaho. The biggest casino, Cactus Pete’s, even features big-name acts like Willie Nelson and ZZ Top- not bad for a tiny settlement in the proverbial middle of nowhere! 2. WENDOVER, UT/ WEST WENDOVER, NV One of the strangest border towns of all is on I-80 along one of the most desolate stretches of one of the most heavily traveled highways in the country. Just west of the vast Bonneville Salt Flats, Wendover straddles the NV/UT border like two juicy asscheeks in a too-tight thong: On the Utah side, ramshackle Wendover bakes in the unforgiven desert sun, while just a block away along the exact same road, gambling, booze, weed and a strip club await you in glittering West Wendover. Surprisingly, however, I found rundown Wendover to be far more interesting thanks to a historic WWII airfield and a hugely popular Mexican cafe. Who’da thunk? 1. AMARGOSA VALLEY My pick for the #1 most interesting border town in all of Nevada is this weird gem only 100-miles west of Vegas, conveniently situated along a road leading into Death Valley. Originally slated to be a masterplanned community called Calvada Lakes, the Endangered Species Act put the kibosh to development in the area thanks to the presence of the Amargosa pupfish. Consequently, today, there’s little in the area other than graded-out roads to nowhere, abandoned buildings, a few ramshackle trailers…and a giant cow looming over the highway next to a casino/hotel with a jarringly unexpected lake out back. Vegasbased auto dealer Jim Marsh built this property banking on future business from workers at the nearby Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository which, alas, also got the kibosh, leaving this weirdly grand establishment standing all alone in the middle of an exceptionally barren and desolate part of the desert. A recently added gas pump is said to generate more revenue in itself than the entire hotel/casino/RV park complex since it’s the last gas station for many, many miles, and the last reasonably-priced option before entering Death Valley…and California.

TRISPROUT An Interview with Jack Zghaib, Chief Operating Officer of TriSprout
Are you originally from Vegas? If not what led you here? I was raised in Vegas. Vegas has always had my heart, there is something here for everyone and always something to do. Tell us about your background. Beginning my career at 18, I started out as a salesperson at local smoke shops, and worked my way up to a general manager. Now, ten years later I handle business operations across the Las Vegas valley and manage logistics of distribution on a national scale. With sights on expanding into the international market. Most recently, you started a company called TRISPROUT. Why start a Kratom company? I started a Kratom company not based solely on fiscal motivation, but rather as a mission. It was imperative to establish a company that is able to not only be able to cater to the consumers, but also provide them with a premium product. Often it is issues that we are most passionate about that provide us the fuel to create something from love as well as necessity. Seeing my loved ones utilize kratom, coupled with my experience within the retail and manufacturing industry has fostered the perfect environment for my
52
team, who care deeply, to produce a premium product that we are proud to stand by. What is Kratom and what are its benefits? Kratom has been a strong alternative remedy utilized as an herbal supplement throughout history. Kratom, or Mitragynaspeciosa, is a tropical tree indigenous to Southeast Asia. Kratom, in many cultures, has been utilized in a variety of ways as far back as the nineteenth century. The physical characteristics of the tree are impressive with the ability to grow as high as 82 feet and their trunk can expand up to 3 feet wide. The large green leaves can amass to approximately 8 inches long and 5 inches wide. Similar to cannabis, kratom is a natural, air-dried, vegan herbal supplement with no additives. Derived from the plant leaves, kratom can be taken in multiple ways depending on the preference of the consumer, and just like cannabis, it can be consumed and tailored to the consumers preferences. Its versatility of consumption adds to its unique and invaluable qualities.
KRATOM Holidays
Are there different types of Kratom? There are different strains; the strains, or types, are based on their geographical origin. Generally speaking, there are three main types of kratom; red vein, white vein and green vein. The trees, based on their region, have different characteristics which differentiate them from one another. Kratom can be consumed in multiple forms depending on the preference of the
A Locally Based Kratom Company consumer: capsule, powder, gel, tea and more. It's really up to the consumer and the preferred form, which is the beauty of kratom, it can be tailored to each person and their desired experience. Why should Vegas locals trust a new brand? TriSprout, is a Las Vegas based company, owned and operated by Las Vegas residents, so you won’t have to moonlight as Liam Neeson to find us. We are creating jobs within a community we love , and for a community we love, as well as creating premium American made products. We are also working on Current Good Manufacturing Practice Regulations (CGMP) and expanding our relationship with the American Kratom Association (AKA). We are in the final steps of our lab completion and looking forward to launching in the Las Vegas market in 2022. How can consumers connect and interact with you? Keny Leepier Freeman, Owner/Creator at KayEmElle Art
Tell us about your background. I'm a young 46-year-old mom of 5. I'm married. We have been together for 21 years this year. Originally from San Diego, we moved to Las Vegas 6-years ago and now call it home. I am an exfoster kid turned entrepreneur. My career background is in Office Administration and Event Planning but my passion has always been art; art of any kind. I just like to create! KayEmElle Art was born from my desire to just make something look better...so I started painting rocks and hiding them around the city. I eventually moved onto canvas before I found my love for creating trays.
What led you to the cannabis industry? I've been smoking cannabis since I was a teen, so the love for the plant has always been there. As I grew older, I learned of the medicinal benefits and started to treat my anxiety with it. This will sound cheesy but one day I was high and just really thinking about how much cannabis does for us, and we do nothing for it in return. So I decided to "show my cannabis that I care" by making a beautiful rolling tray set for it. A friend of mine saw it and she wanted one. One of her friends saw it and that became my first sale. I just knew that I was on to something so I made KayEmElle Art an official business and started making trays regularly. Over time, the business grew and different shops started carrying my products.
Tell us about your company, products, etc. KayEmElleArt is a woman-owned, minority-owned business where I make custom smoking accessories. I do everything myself, from selecting or designing the image, to spray painting and laying the epoxy. Rolling tray sets are my best sellers. I know that there are a million rolling tray options out there but I wanted something different. All of my sets include a metal, epoxy coated rolling tray, a
matching magnetic stash box and lighter...all for $25! I offer custom add-ons to sets such as grinders, ashtrays, flameless USB lighters and tumbler bongs.
Do you do custom work? Ninety-percent of my work is custom. I am able to take a photo or logo and customize sets to my customers liking. I thoroughly enjoy helping a business brand itself with my sets, or a couple commemorate a moment on their sets.
How can readers order from you? Directly through my Instagram @KayEmElleArt or on my website KayEmElleArt.com
Anything new coming up in the future? Expansion! And a few surprises...I will be adding new sets that include matching grinders which will provide my customers with a personal and complete rolling station. I also have a few new product ideas brewing so stay tuned! In 2022, there are many exciting things happening, starting with my sponsorship of The Orange County Cannabis Awards on January 28 and 29- I will be onsite with a ton of new designs. You will also be able to catch me at local pop up shops around Las Vegas!
Anything you want to add? I just want to say how deeply grateful I am that the Las Vegas Cannabis Community has embraced me like it has! I can't wait to grow with my canna fam!

Sisters of the valley mushroom coffee
Super 17
are hand-collected, dried and have been used in traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, and used to treat fatigue, sickness, kidney disease and low sex drive.
All organic ingredients include, cocoa, black tea, reishi, lion’s mane, cordyceps, turkey tail, chaga, shitake, ashwagandha, turmeric, Himalayan salt, ginger root, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and black pepper. A kind of mushroomy-chaiflavored beverage that won’t leave you crashing on a caffeine downer later.
The Sisters modeled their order - with cannabis as the centerpiece - after the Beguines, an ancient order of community caregiving
Cinnamon alone brings blood sugar numbers down, treating symptoms of diabetes. Cardamom has long been known for its digestive aiding properties, relieving stomach issues and treating ulcers.

The 17 ingredient list in the Sisters of the Valley’s newest product reads like an ancient spiritual recipe that might be brought out by the light of the full moon for conjuring. And though the Sisters have been accused of being witches and more, the goodness found within a cup of its mushroom coffee is nothing short of a boost of energized healing first thing in the morning - whether you are waking and baking, conjuring, or just manifesting a good day.
The spices used - turmeric cloves, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg, and cloves - are loaded with antioxidants and are strong antiinflammatories, fighting bacteria, and viruses that lead to infection.
Note: According to Healthline.com, Cordyceps is a genus of parasitic fungi that grows on the larvae of insects, attacking the host while replacing its tissue and sprouting long, slender stems that grow outside the host’s body. The remains

While Lion’s Mane mushrooms are just one of the beneficial mushrooms used in the blend, here’s a short list of the many benefits to give you an idea of the bulk of healing from just this one fungi: protection against dementia, relieves mild forms of depression, speeds recovery from nervous system injuries, protects against ulcers in the digestive tract, reduces risk of heart disease, manages diabetes symptoms, acts as an antioxidant, preventing and killing cancer cells. By the light of the moon…
women from the 1300s well into the 1700s in rural France. The Sisters of the Valley enclaves can now be found around the world, and now include Brothers. They grow their plants and make remedies, including the mushroom coffee, by the cycles of the moon, “with prayers sewn into every bottle and jar,” as noted on its website. The recipe was developed with ingredients that aid in mood stabilization, while adding beneficial compounds to your morning brew that you won’t find in the coffee bean. “Every batch was lab tested right here in our farm kitchen,” Sister Kate said as she blended the mixture using a Basecent frother wand kit. The frother comes with its starter set, with a 10 ounce tin of mushroom coffee. The flavor is rich and gives a boost of energy without the jitters that lasted hours into my day.
Why Shrooms Now? The study mushrooms, known as mycology, has long found the fungus among us to be beneficial, not just for enjoying with spaghetti, but in skin care products and medicinal use. Mushrooms are also used in making sustainable building materials, such as vegan leather, cleaning products, textiles, biofuels, and packaging. As noted on resilience.org, fungi actually breaks down, absorbs, and cleans-up petroleum oil spills from soil. For instance, as stated at permaculture.co.uk, the oyster mushroom has been found to break down toxins in-situ, removing and neutralising pollutants in a river - a form of bioremediation. Oyster mushrooms have also been shown to reduce E. coli, breaking down hydrocarbons. “Medicinal mushrooms can be defined as macroscopic fungi, as extracts or powders for prevention, alleviation, or healing of multiple diseases, and/or balancing a healthy diet,” as found at sciencedirect.com. Though the Sisters’ coffee has no psychoactive properties, like you’d find with Psilocybin mushrooms, a general understanding of what mushrooms can do as far as healing mind and body, is becoming more widely accepted in the U.S. and around the world. Mycology is a thing. Time to get to know the fungus among us, as both a beneficial supplement for physical and mental disorders, and of its many industrial uses. In the meantime, thanks to the Sisters of the Valley for developing such a wonderful combination of shrooms for our morning break! For more information visit, sistersofthevalley.org

Let's Talk Endocannabinoid System- CB1 and CB2
>>>>>
What is the Endocannabinoid system? Endocannabinoid receptors are in our brain. They are located in the cortex, cerebellum, basal ganglia, hippocampus, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. This is a huge discussion as the Endocannabinoid System is the largest system in our human bodies. New discoveries are being made on a daily basis, as we continue to dive in and tackle this fascinating system that operates in our bodies. The ECS was discovered in 1992 by Lumir Hanus, at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, alongside the American pharmacologist Dr. William Devane, and the great scientist famously known for identifying THC (Δ9- tetrahydrocannabinol), Dr. Raphael Mechoulam (Hanus). The ECS (Endocannabinoid System) is believed to have more receptors in the human body than any other system. It has cannabinoid receptors embedded in cell membranes all throughout the body. The two identified and most studied types of receptors are CB1 and CB2, which are G-protein-coupled receptors that also happen to be the most common receptors in the body (Almogi-Hazan). The G-proteins on the cell membrane control metabolism, pain, appetite,
62
memory, emotion, stress, gastrointestinal motions, fertility, immune function, and bone growth. Cannabis consists of more than 500 compound chemicals, of which, the phytocannabinoids affect the ECS. Substances that activate the ECS receptors are called cannabinoids. Cannabinoids affect the nervous system and have a significant role in regulating the immune system. Phytocannabinoids interact with terpenes and flavonoids, which are found all throughout nature. There are nearly 144 different phytocannabinoids (Frye). In comparison to endorphins that do not pass the blood-brain barrier, endocannabinoids move easily through the cellular barrier separating the bloodstream from the brain (Linden). Talk about power! CB1 receptors are found in the CNS (Central Nervous System), connective tissues, glands, organs, and gonads. They affect cognition, mood, short-term memory, motor function, and how the brain interprets pain (Frye). Its primary focus is to create homeostasis (internal balance within the body). The best way I like to describe it is, it acts as a traffic controller for an intersection in the brain where the release and regulation of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate are released. CB1 receptors are expressed in the CNS and are responsible for mediating the effects of cannabinoids binding to the brain. CB2 receptors are mainly found in the immune system throughout the body. They’re the peripheral receptors of cannabinoids (Dhopeshwarkar). These receptors are a therapeutic target in inflammatory disease (Turcotte). There are 2 cannabinoids that exert nonpsychoactive effects without binding to CB2 receptors: CBD (cannabidiol) and CBG (cannabigerol). Endocannabinoids are chemical compounds that activate the same receptors as THC. There are 2 endocannabinoids identified that
BY: TEE "CANNA" MORENO @CANNAPSYCHMD
are the most studied which are, Anandamide (AEA) was the first endocannabinoid to be discovered and 2-AG (2-arachidonoylglycerol) the agonist for CB2 receptors. These compounds control mood, metabolism, appetite, memory, sleep, immune function, pain, inflammation, and muscle tone. Anandamide (AEA) is a brain lipid that binds to cannabinoid receptors with affinity and mimics the psychoactive effects of cannabinoids. It binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors. 2-AG (2- arachidonoylglycerol) acts as an important signal and as an immediate in lipid metabolism. 2-AG is transported by carrier proteins into the cell and is broken down by hydrolysis (chemical bond broken by water). In comparison to AEA, it is present in higher levels in the CNS and attaches to CB1 receptors. There is a lot of research that is currently being held on our Endocannabinoid system as we speak, or shall I say, as you read. I will have to bring back a Part 2 discussion covering the new information and studies in the months to come. Until then, take good care of your body and your endocannabinoid system will take care of you! Stay tuned…. That's right, it's the December issue and soon it will be an entirely new year with another year full of opportunities. I hope you all had a phenomenal Thanksgiving with your families and friends. DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 200° while you open up your gingerbread village kit. Grab a pan, and place all the gingerbread pieces in it. When the oven is ready, place the gingerbread into the oven for 2-3 minutes to get it warm. Easy right, I got you! Pull out your pan and rub your infused butter on both sides of the cookies. Yes, both sides because you're worth it. While warm, place the cookies face side down and sprinkle some infused sugar on them. Place back in the oven for 4-5 minutes. Pull your cookies out and place them to the side to cool off and prepare for building.
