This month marks the 36th issue of Vegas Cannabis and the completion of our third full year supplying Nevada patients and cannabis enthusiasts with much needed information, articles and resources. What a journey this has been. We started this publication one year before the first, fully licensed medical marijuana establishment opened it’s doors with the intention of never losing sight of the patients in this community. Three years later, our focus remains the same, we have just added some fun, community-based elements such as our monthly artist spotlight, pictorial event recaps and local business features. Most importantly, we have been, and always will be a voice for the Southern Nevada cannabis community. Our doors are always open and we welcome your input. In this issue, we interview rapper and musician, Afroman to find out about his work with High Sierra Holistics and what cannabis strains he has on the horizon. This month also features the infused art of Serene Temple whose work is on display locally at Panacea Quality Cannabis. Also, be sure to check out Peter Jay’s article which details his medical use of cannabis to treat multiple sclerosis. Many of you have written in asking about the poster and filter tips that readers were accustomed to in the past. As I said before, you ask and we listen. This month, our pullout poster is back and better than ever. And, next month, you guessed it, the filter tips will be back in as well. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to take a moment to thank all of our advertisers that have supported us for the past three years. It is our advertisers that make it possible for us to offer 30,000 copies of this magazine free of charge to readers each month. If you love reading this magazine, please thank our advertisers as well by giving them your business. And when you do, be sure to mention that you saw them in Vegas Cannabis Magazine. Have an awesome month!

AFROMAN
Interviewed By: Bill Shehan Curated By: Michael Cassini
T
oday, we stopped in at Inyo Fine Cannabis Dispensary to unload a few dozen Pink Box donuts to Rob Ruckus and the hard working budtenders that selflessly serve the Las Vegas valley. While visiting with staff and customers, eating donuts and comparing strains, Afroman called from Salt Lake City, Utah. Do we call him back from a quiet place? Of course not. This has all the personality and comfort of a busy barbershop on a Saturday afternoon. With some big things in the works including his new strain Palmdale Purple which is being cultivated by Nevada’s own High Sierra Holistics and the introduction of his new alcoholic beverage Cold FRO-T-5, we had plenty to talk about. BILL: Yo, I’m at the dispensary. How about we do this right now? Can we Facetime and do the interview here? FRO: Sure.
BILL: Ok, this is the best way to do an in interview. You are live with the staff and customers of Inyo Fine Cannabis Dispensary. Where are you at right now? FRO: I’m in Salt Lake CIty, Utah on a layover. BILL: How are you feeling?
24
FRO: Real good. Larger than life!
BILL: Right on. That’s a nice gold chain, is there anybody else dressed like you there? FRO: (looks around) No. BILL: Where does your style come from, you had to be rocking something crazy since before your Colt 45 days? FRO: It’s really just being a soul brother. It ain’t my style, it’s just a soul brother style. It’s the older brothers I got it from. Just how to be cool, ya know. BILL: Did you cultivate your style pre-cannabis or because you got high? FRO: Pre-cannabis. But I must say that after I got high, I added some very interesting details. Ya know, the chain. BILL: The chain got thicker, the beard got longer and the hair got nice and fluffy. Whoa, show me that weed chain! FRO: (Smiling and holding chains and rings)
BILL: Nice, those are sharp! Okay so, Las Vegas is beginning to regulate and distribute cannabis alongside alcohol. As a licensing guy representing several brands, do you see yourself as more of an alcohol distributor or a cannabis ambassador?
You’d get arrested for drinking Budweiser in my neighborhood! We drink Cold FRO-T-5. It’s my beer and it’s available now in the midwest and expanding. Look for that coming up in Las Vegas.
BILL: Is it an even 50/50?
BILL: I believe in that theory. I can’t be 50/50 bud/liquor. I’m not much of a drinker, if I pound a beer when you visit, I probably already did ten dabs so it’s still 90/10 for me.
FRO: No. I’d say 60/40. Bud.
FRO: Right on. Right on.
BILL: Bud meaning buds, not Budweiser?
BILL: If I drink a lot of beers there is a recovery period and I don’t like the recovery period. When you use alcohol and bud together in a normal day, is there a recovery from liquor or does the cannabis help you?
FRO: Both.
FRO: Correct, not Budweiser.
FRO: I smoke bud more than I drink beer because bud is easier on me. When i’m ready to go hard, when I’m ready to party, I enjoy both. You know, like, a dab a day!
FRO: It's a disinfectant, like for your breath... BILL: Hey, who is that standing there talking to you? FRO: That’s a fan here to say hello, Jung Fish is his name. BILL: Hell yeah, let’s say hi to one of your Vegas fans too, fan to fan. Hey dude, you wanna talk to afroman? INYO CUSTOMER: No way man! Tall cans? Afroman? Hey I used to tattoo to your jams 24/7, people loved it!
FRO: I always prefer anything OG. BILL: What other projects do you have going on? Any weed projects. FRO: We are featuring the Palmdale Purple which is being grown over at High Sierra Holistics. It’s heavy headed indica hybrid of Grape Ape & OG Kush. It’s good for sleep and pain as well. BILL: Nice. I like a sleeper indica. When are we going to taste the Fro-G Kush you are working on? FRO: It’s growing right now. That’s a one hitter quitter right there. You go night-night, you go bye-bye! BILL: Hit us with a pairing, what’s the best bud to smoke with a Cold FRO-T-5?
BILL: What do you roll up in? FRO: Frigg Fraggz blunt wraps. I used to use Swishers and these are like Swishers but ready to go without removing the tobacco. BILL:Since we are in Vegas, do you gamble and if so, what is your game? FRO: I like to gamble and play chess. BILL: Do you play chess for money? FRO: Yes, ghetto chess. I like to talk shit while I play chess! We are not gonna play no classic chess. When I come to Vegas, I’ll give you an option, we can play gentlemans chess or we can play hood chess. BILL: I want to play hood chess for sure, you can be shirts and I’ll be skins. FRO: We’ll be smoking and talking shit mostly. BILL: It’s non-stop playtime in Vegas and we can’t wait to have you out here. Thank you for doing this quick interview on Facetime with all our friends. FRO: For sure. I’ll see you soon Vegas and look forward to seeing that Palmdale Purple and Fro-G Kush in those dispensaries when I visit!

CANNABIS VARIATIONS ARE STRAIN NAMES USEFUL?
I
n last month’s issue of Vegas Cannabis, Digipath Labs’ editorial, “What’s in a Name?,” discussed the myriad of confusion that has resulted from the thousands of cannabis strain names swirling around and how to start up a new classification scheme. This month we are delving further into this topic with the continuing observation that strain naming has just about worn out its usefulness. In particular for recreational cannabis where marketing is king and differentiating one’s products takes creativity and yet importantly demands a reproducible experience for the end user, enter the new marketing trend known as “effects-based” classification, where strains go unnamed in place of words imbuing an anticipated, reproducible outcome for the end user. And for established medicinal cannabis companies, where shrouding behind proprietary monikers may just work through rebranding with a polished tag in the vain of BigPharma. At this rousing time where the distinction between recreational
and medicinal cannabis has high stakes for the entire industry, I present an example of rebranding from both camps. Leading the wave in “effects-based” cannabis classification is Southern California’s Canndescent. Since you can’t really create any distinction, excitement or proprietary protection on a product made from any given Blue Dream or say an OG Kush strain extract, one could create a marketing campaign based on the effects they might reliably result in. Canndescent is a fully integrated cannabis cultivation and production company aimed at the adult market who hopes to differentiate itself through marketing its premium cannabis-based products much as premium wines are and aimed as recreational consumers who may be naïve when they enter a dispensary. For Canndescent those “effects-based” classifications are called pillars, and there are five: CALM, CRUISE, CREATE, CONNECT or CHARGE. These terms obviously relate to how the products make users feel. I suppose there will be proprietary recipes created through combining various cannabis extracts and perhaps other disclosed or undisclosed chemicals to reach these states of effect. Were the words describing the effects chosen first? Why five? Were trials/tastings held to determine what constitutes a CHARGE vs. a CRUISE effect? Are there product specs to be met? Seeing recognizable singular words on bright packaging may prove to be a smart, distinctive approach to cannabis marketing in the same mode as tried and true generic wine terms: crisp, dry, fruity, full-bodied, oaky or mineral. Flip the cannabis coin to Bedrocan, the Dutch company with a 20 year heritage in

legal medicinal cannabis cultivation and production as the sole supplier of medicinal cannabis to the Dutch government and the world’s first producer of medicinal cannabis to comply with the European Medicines Agency’s good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards without the use of pesticides or solvents. At Bedrocan they grow five cultivars, Afina, Ludina, Elida, Talea, and Resina which they distinguish by tightly maintained cannabinoid content product specifications but marketed under the respective names: BEDROCAN - BEDROBINOL - BEDIOL – BEDICA –- BEDROLITE. Bedrocan supplies their branded cannabis in 12 countries via a physician’s prescription. In addition, Bedrocan supplies pharmaceutical-grade, standardized cannabis flower referred to as FLOS (whole, dried cannabis flower) for research and development as well as a cannabis placebo, that is equivalent minus THCA and CBDA content. Bedrocan also offers clinical trial design and consultancy for R&D efforts worldwide. While both Canndescent and Bedrocan have taken their own steps to help bring a more meaningful nomenclature to cannabis for their respective markets, they have also provided a promising approach to how recreational and medicinal cannabis can both exist and not intrude into each other’s clearly defined marketing space.

CANNABIS >>> RESEARCH
C
\\ #702VCM \\ VEGAS CANNABIS
FOUNDED 2007
By: Dr. Aseem Sappal Provost & Dean of the Faculty, Oaksterdam University
Oaksterdam University has been cultivating leaders since 2007, celebrating ten years of quality training for the cannabis industry! At OU, you will learn from the very first dispensary owners in the United States, the first attorneys to ever take cannabis cases to the Supreme Court and the authors of America’s 1st cannabis legislations—Proposition 215, Senate Bill 420 and more recently California’s MCRSA & AUMA.
annabis, both medical and adult-use is gaining public acceptance around the world, not just in the United States. Mexico, Ireland, and Germany all recently legalized cannabis for medical use, plus Canada, Israel, and Uruguay have decriminalized the plant.
Even though the U.S. has the most valuable legal marijuana market in the world, federal law makes studying the plant extremely difficult. First of all, cannabis is still considered a “Schedule I” substance since the Controlled Substance Act of 1970, declaring it a “drug with no medical value and a high potential for abuse.” Because of cannabis’ “Schedule I” classification, researchers have to jump through hoops and pass a rigorous multi agency review to begin clinical research. First a DEA license is required, then approval from the FDA. Some researchers wait years for this process and still never get their studies approved. Then, if research is approved, the actual cannabis cannot be simply purchased at a dispensary. By law it needs to come from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which is lower quality than cannabis offered in commercial and medical dispensaries, often making research obsolete. Research on cannabis is needed for two main public health reasons. The first is for medical benefits. As of now, there are many preliminary studies but most of the public’s medical cannabis knowledge comes from anecdotes. Like how young Charlotte Figi’s seizure disorder was radically helped by a strain high in CBD, later named Charlotte’s Web in her honor. In Mexico, there’s a little girl, Grace Elizalde, who was the first medical marijuana patient in the Latin American nation. Her foundation, Por Grace has helped Mexico approve medical cannabis. The second biggest reason we need more cannabis research: adult-use marijuana is on the rise with public acceptance mounting, so people deserve to know the long term health effects of using the plant. There is plenty of research on the effects of other substances, from alcohol and cigarettes to over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen, but the information on cannabis is severely limited. What’s happening chemically in a smoker's body over time? Is their eyesight being affected? What about memory and lung function? Is it safe for pregnant women to consume? These are important public health issues that demand answers as quickly as we are passing legislation. By 2018, anyone over 21 will be able to purchase and use cannabis legally in California, the 5th largest economy in the world and the most populated state in America with over 39 million people as of 2015. Not to mention the entire nation of Canada is about to have full adult access to cannabis as well. These millions of potential consumers have the right to know how cannabis affects their bodies from reliable, peer reviewed sources.

BY MITCHELL S. BISSON, ESQ. MANAGING ATTORNEY CALLISTER LAW GROUP
The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers
As a brief introduction, my name is Mitchell S. Bisson, Esq. and I am the managing attorney at Callister Law Group in downtown Las Vegas. I met the fine folks over at Vegas Cannabis Magazine a short while ago and in the midst of one of our discussion “sessions,” Bill and I tossed around the idea of me writing for Vegas Cannabis regarding various legal topics affecting the cannabis industry. Of course, I agreed without hesitation. To clear the air, I am not one of those boring, uptight attorneys many people think of when they picture an attorney. For one thing, as you can probably gather, I’m very pro-marijuana. I think it can do wonders medicinally and is a great way for people to unwind. My line of work is definitely not boring either. I fight for the little guy. I represent the oppressed, the misunderstood, and yes, even the (alleged) criminal. I handle cases in almost every area of law – Civil Rights, Criminal Law, Business Litigation, you name it. I sue the police officer who had nothing better to do than harass and inflict harm on you. I sue the employer who unlawfully discriminated against you for one reason or another. I make sure you don’t get in trouble for stupid shit you shouldn’t get in trouble for. Which leads me to the topic for this first write-up: “public consumption” of marijuana. Let’s cut right to the chase – Las Vegas is a hotbed for tourism. Much of what is done in and around Las Vegas is geared toward drawing people to our beautiful and exciting city - our local economy thrives from it. And now with the legalization of recreational marijuana, Las Vegas has a unique opportunity to position itself even further ahead of the competition for title of “Entertainment Capital of the World.” That being said, there is a lot of work that needs to be done in order for Las Vegas to really capitalize on this opportunity. For example, although anyone visiting Las Vegas who is over the age of 21 can walk into a dispensary and purchase up to an ounce of marijuana, absent them having a friend that has a house in the valley, there is no legal place for a law-abiding visitor to actually consume their legally-purchased product. This is because NRS 453D.400(2) makes it a misdemeanor to smoke or otherwise consume (yes, this includes vaping, eating, etc.) marijuana in any “public place.” In addition, all of the major strip casinos have made it clear that marijuana is neither allowed nor tolerated at their establishments. This begs the question, if a person visiting from out of town is not allowed to consume their marijuana in either a public place or
34
even their hotel room, where are they supposed to partake? Surely we do not want them to take their product back home via McCarran Airport or other travel across state lines, both of which are still illegal on the federal level (and airports are subject to federal control). It’s just one big setup for disappointment, or worse yet – a misdemeanor or felony! Local marijuana businesses, this affects you as well. A couple of weeks ago, the Clark County Department of Business License sent out a letter to all Medical, Retail, and Marijuana Support Business Licensees warning that anyone affiliated with non-licensed marijuana businesses or events, or businesses that promote the public consumption of marijuana, are at risk of having their business license suspended or revoked. This letter basically made it clear that events and “tours” such as cannabis yoga and weed busses are not allowed and businesses found to even be promoting or affiliated with these events are at risk of losing their license. Although I understand the law “as is” prohibits public consumption of marijuana, it is obvious Nevada lawmakers need to take action during the next legislative session to help ease some of the burdens placed on those actually trying to avail themselves of Nevada’s marijuana laws, as well as the licensed marijuana businesses in town that are simply trying to direct their consumers to safe locations to consume their goods. So what can be done? During the 2017 Nevada Legislative Session, Senate Bill 236 was passed by members of both the Senate and the Assembly. SB 236 would have allowed local governments to permit some forms of public consumption, such as marijuana lounges. This would have helped alleviate the problem visitors face with having no legal place to consume. Unfortunately, Governor Sandoval vetoed SB 236, killing it on the spot. This clearly needs to be re-addressed during the next legislative session so Las Vegas can live up to its full potential when it comes to capitalizing on recreational marijuana. Until then, if you’re just visiting and want to take advantage of Nevada’s recreational marijuana laws, make sure to call a buddy, an old college roommate, or even ole Uncle Fred and see if they’ll let you crash for a few days!

By: Deborah Costella
is name was John Chapman, born 1774, in Leominster Massachusetts, a tall, lanky and eccentric gentleman. He never married, instead believing he would be rewarded for his abstinence once he reached the Pearly Gates. Often clothed in tattered trousers or, on occasion long robes, Mr. Chapman was a great lover of animals and is reported to have been a vegetarian throughout his adult life. Who was this complicated yet sentimental man? You likely know him as Johnny Appleseed and he happens to be an ancestor to my dear cheffriend, Chappy. Back in the early 1800’s Johnny spent much of his time, doing what we’ve all read about; broadcasting apple seeds throughout the Northwest Territory. This was an astute business decision on Johnny’s part, as he wasn’t prompted to spread seeds simply for the fun of it, but for profit. Knowing of the Ohio Company of Associate’s generous intention to award one hundred acres of land to frontiersmen considering a move further west beyond existing settlements. But proof the settlers truly intended to make their homesteads permanent was required. This was done by planting fifty apple trees and twenty peach trees on the property they planned to lay claim. Johnny brilliantly figured out if he took on the difficult task of planting apple and peach seeds, (he was a Nurseryman by trade) he could flip the land and make sufficient money selling the established property to those incoming frontiersmen and their families. Since it took apple trees a good ten years to begin bearing fruit, Johnny was essentially staging the land for prospective buyers. Evidently “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” as my friend Chappy is as astute and entrepreneurial as his ancestral relative. Unfortunately those trees Johnny planted didn’t exactly yield apples fit for teachers to eat and enjoy. Apples back in those days were quite tart and bitter. Better suited for use in Hard Cider and Applejack. Both these homebrewed beverages were consumed by men, women and children regularly, due to the fact one did not contract dysentery from drinking cider as was often the case with water. Now, Johnny did more than just toss seeds from his knapsack, he was also adept at grafting (cutting back branches of an established tree and budding part if it onto another). Grafting was forbidden in parts of Europe at the time, as many believed it caused the plants to suffer. But here in America where we toss caution to the wind, Johnny and others like him began grafting apple trees until they ended up with a slew of those sweet apples we relish today.
As I sat writing this story I became curious about which of the thousand or so apples to choose from, thanks in large part to his Uncle Johnny, is Chappy’s favorite. His is Fuji, which is among the most fragrant, crisp and juicy of this 3,000 year old fruit. Fuji is actually a Japanese hybrid using two famously

American apples, the Red Delicious and the Ralls Janet (an actual heirloom) created in 1930’s. By the early 1900’s due to the efforts of Carrie Nation and her Temperance League, both serious opponents to alcohol and its relationship to evil, there emerged an atmosphere that shunned the drinking of hard cider. This was bad news for apples. With the reduction in consumption of cider, apple growers saw their profits seriously decline. In response, increased grafting of apple trees occurred, creating a greater variety of edible versions. And, there was an additional twist. Somewhere along a clever marketing scheme citing apples as “healthy” materialized. This decree encouraged the general public to eat rather than drink these new, tastier apples. Buoyed by the now famous lexicon, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” apple cultivators saw profits shoot up like beanstalks towards the sky. Now apples were actually good for you and there were edible, flavorful choices to boot.

Simultaneously, the federal government began requiring states to educate children at least through elementary school level. This is when we begin to see apples make appearances on teachers’ desks. Just as it had been done in the 1600’s in Sweden and Denmark, American families, poor or not, compensated teachers with food; baskets of bread, a chicken or an apron full of fresh eggs. Slabs of pork (that was generous payment), and fruit, namely apples. Apples now wholesome and sweet, made sense as most frontier-families owned those hundred acre parcels upon which Johnny had planted the original apple and peach trees.

Cosmic Muffin's Infused Apple Crostada INGREDIENTS FOR CRUST: • • • • • •
1 ¼ (6 ¼ ounces weighed) cups all purpose flour 2 Tbsp granulated sugar ¼ tsp kosher salt ¼ tsp fresh lemon zest ¼ (give or take) cup ice water 4 ounces canna-butter, cold, cut into ½ cubes
What about the apple a day to keep the doctor away? Why is that creed still holding up? It seems what began as a marketing ploy has been proven to hold some (dysentery-free) water. Recent research indicates a fresh apple has more than 1,500 milligrams of vitamin C in it. Not to mention vitamin E and a very high fiber content. Nutritionists suggest we eat apples with the skin on. Apples are said to help reduce growth of certain cancer cells as well as being a top source of quercetin, a plant chemical that appears to protect the lining of our blood vessels. Appears, apples do help keep doctors away.
PROCESS FOR CRUST:
So, Johnny Appleseed, the original DIY/Property-Flipper, with his apple planting obsession and growers dedicated to grafting and creating myriad apple varieties along with their genius ploy of promoting them as healthy; “Eat an apple upon going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread,” (the original slogan) has become a real benefit for teachers and apple lovers all across this great country of ours. From the original settlements in the wild frontier to current day, apples have cemented themselves as an integral part of gift giving and a nutritious diet.

I’ve yet to give one of those “Apple of Month Club” mail order gifts nor am I a school girl; however, I do enroll in classes frequently. The next time I take a class, instead of leaving an apple on the desk, I’m thinking I’ll give a homemade, Infused Apple Crostada! That way I’m combining the healthy aspects of two of nature’s bounty; apples and cannabis! A rather unique mode of compensation, I’d say. Multi-faceted in her talents and interests, Deborah L. Costella has enjoyed expressing her creativity as a dancer, teacher, chef and writer, both in the Northern California Bay Area and Las Vegas Nevada. She has authored two cookbooks and has written numerous articles and newsletters for local publications in the Las Vegas Valley, with a focus on cooking. Deborah currently teaches cooking classes at Sur La Table and Cozymeal, as well as private in-home classes. She also provides personal chef services in both Las Vegas and the San Francisco Bay Area. She has yet another book in the works.
Place flour, sugar, and salt in food processor or a large mixing bowl, pulse or stir with a fork to combine. By pulsing or using a pastry cutter, cut the canna-butter, a few pieces at a time, into dry ingredients until mixture looks like pea-gravel or sand. Begin adding ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until dough comes together in a ball. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and flatten dough into a disk, about 6 inches in diameter. Cover completely in plastic wrap and allow dough to rest in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
INGREDIENTS FOR APPLE FILLING:
2 Gala, 2 Braeburn and 2 Gravenstein or York apples (about 6 apples total) peeled, seeded and sliced into thin slices ¼ cup raisins or currants ¼ cup dark brown sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp cornstarch ¼ tsp fresh lemon zest 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 whole egg mixed with 1 Tbsp half and half 1-2 Tbsp finishing sugar 1 Tbsp spoon canna-butter crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream for garnish as desired
PROCESS FOR FILLING:
Combine apples, brown sugar, raisins or currants, cinnamon, cornstarch, lemon zest and vanilla in a large mixing bowl. Set aside until ready to use.
TO ASSEMBLE CROSTADA: Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Remove crust from fridge and place disc on a lightly floured surface, using a rolling pin, roll dough out into a 9 inch circle. With a bench scraper or large spatula, move rolled crust onto a sheet pan lined with parchment paper or silpat. Mound apple filling into center of crust, leaving about a 1-2 inch margin around the edge. You may have some filling left over. If so, reserve the fruit mixture and add it to your morning smoothie or use it top a waffle or two. Fold edges of crust towards the center. Don’t completely cover the fruit, you should be able to see the mound of apples and raisins. Lightly brush the exposed crust with the egg wash. Sprinkle finishing sugar onto brushed crust and sprinkle a bit on the exposed fruit. Dot fruit with remaining canna-butter. Place sheet pan in pre-heated oven and bake for about 30-40 minutes or until fruit is bubbling and crust is a golden brown. Serve to your favorite teacher with a dollop of crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream.

TALES FROM THE CRIP:
IS THE TONIC! By Peter Jay
Multiple sclerosis (MS) sucks. You know your idiot roommate’s even-bigger-idiot buddy, the one who shows up late to your party, consumes everything in sight, vomits in your bathtub (the toilet is RIGHT THERE, DICK!) and then will not leave? Yeah, that “even bigger idiot” is MS. I have MS. Take a minute to envy me—I’ll wait.
Now, when I go to buy my meds, the product label tells me everything from terpene counts to what the bud trimmer had for lunch that day!
Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS), whereas your immune system gets confused and begins attacking your CNS, consisting of your brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Imagine SEAL Team 6 going guns-hot on the parts of your body that control your abilities to see, think and move. Do you remember the earlier line about how multiple sclerosis sucks? How is that envy coming along? Fear not, Dear Reader, for this old cripple is far from broken. Bent, maybe; crooked, even more so. My body has absorbed and processed HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of dollars’ worth of various chemicals over the years, all designed to help me fight this disease. I’ve had my immune system ablated (neuro-geek speak for “turned into scorched earth”) on two memorable occasions. I’m actually USED to nurses digging away on the backs of my hands with a needle, trying to start an IV. Sometimes, all you can do is smile!
Inflammation is a scourge. It makes ankles swell, heads ache and appendices explode. Inflammation is a huge part of MS—when attacked by your immune system, your CNS responds with inflammation and results in lost function. The best analogy that I can offer is to compare a nerve to a piece of electrical wire: if the wire doesn’t have fucking big holes in it, it works as intended. My wires are FULL of holes (inflamed bits and pieces), and the more inflamed my wires, the less function (walking, manual dexterity, patience) I enjoy. THE QUESTION, Dear Reader, is clear: how do you stop inflammation? I am fortunate in that I have decent private health insurance,

and they have paid dearly for our association. The GOOD news is that I am TOTALLY worth it—in fact, I think they got a pretty tall deal. The fire is out, for now at least, but its relentless burn over the last twenty years has left me a tad jacked up. My legs are my primary complaint, as they are sometimes like mashed potatoes and sometimes like rebar-reinforced concrete—every day is an adventure! Muscle relaxers (Soma, Flexeril, Baclofen) do the job about halfway, but leave me with a tendency to drool and stare out the window. If only there existed a natural-yet-unbelievablyeffective substance (a plant, maybe!) whose consumption would stop my traitorous legs from constantly spasming and effect a tranquil humour to my sometimes-challenging existence… In 2001, voters in the Great State of Nevada legalized marijuana usage for the treatment of certain medical conditions, and multiple sclerosis is high (heh) on the list. In August of 2015, Euphoria Wellness became the first medical marijuana dispensary to open in the Las Vegas valley; I’ve had my card since 2008, so it was a real kick to actually have somewhere to use the damned thing. Sure, there were the “delivery only” places, but you were pretty much at their mercy regarding cultivation standards, product quality, THC/CBD levels, etc. Now, when I go to buy my meds, the product label tells me everything from terpene counts to what the bud trimmer had for lunch that day. Ok, j-u-u-u-s-t kidding on that last, but you likely know what I mean. For treatment, I prefer flower with a THC percentage of 25% or higher to relax my stiff-assed legs, with as much CBD as I can get my hands on, as the one-two punch of THC + CBD is what rings my cherries. I generally put flame to flower for consumption method; vaping is fine, as are concentrates, but I find combustion allows me to best titrate the dosage for my needs. As always, your mileage may vary. Finally, while I am pleased for the recreational marijuana enthusiasts here in town, I cannot help but feel that we medical patients are likely to get hosed. I picked up a half-ounce last week, my first since July legalization, and found the price $25 steeper than my last purchase. I gave the budtender my best conspiratorial smile and told him that I was a medical patient. He, in turn, looked equally-conspiratorially over each shoulder… and told me that he hoped I’d feel better soon. This was NOT the response that I was looking for. Just saying. #FuckMS

LEGALIZE FEDERALLY Getting to walk people through the medical benefits of cannabis has been a life changing experience. Seeing the relief people of all ages are receiving on a daily basis makes me sleep with a full heart every night. It's a pretty fulfilling feeling. But, along with any high (see what I did there,) comes a low. And it's a low everyone needs to be aware of. On more than a few occasions recently I've come into contact with people who are losing their jobs and healthcare over cannabis use. There is one patient in particular that I've been helping with cannabis oil who was in a pain management program because of severe pain from an auto accident. He was taking massive amounts of opiates prescribed to him by his doctors, but when he tried cannabis edibles (successfully I might add) to treat his pain, he came up dirty on a test. He was kicked out of the program with a heavy opiate addiction. Not knowing where to turn he got sucked into heroin as so many doctor-created junkies do. By the time he came to me for help this man had lost everything! After blowing all his money on pills from the street, he had lost his health, his home, his family, and part of his mind. He had been an out on the street junkie for the last two years. He hit bottom and luckily reached out for help to the right people. Unfortunately, not everyone has that opportunity.
After a few months of cannabis oil for his pain and treatment for his addiction through a doctor that actually cares about people's health and not just fleecing money from sick people, he's doing a lot better physically, mentally and spiritually. He's been 100% opiate free for eight months now, he's reunited with his family and has started working again recently. He also smokes cannabis regularly and consumes cannabis oil everyday. The point I'm getting at is the fight is not over. This is happening to people all over the country. This is happening EVERY day in our own backyard. Not everyone has a support group. People are losing everything because of drug testing, for a now state legal, non-toxic plant. I've seen thousands come through the door of Inyo Fine Cannabis Dispensary since recreational use started. I see the relief patients are getting. If all the people new to the cannabis scene start sharing their experiences with others and get in on the fight to federally legalize this plant so EVERYONE can reap its benefits without worrying about losing their jobs, families and unfortunately sometimes their lives, we really will be able to make a difference. I've unfortunately seen this story and others like it unfold too many times in the past few years. It varies a bit. Sometimes it's losing kids, sometimes it's led to suicide, another recent one was a veteran with cancer. These stories are heartbreaking and unnecessary! We all still need to fight to change the world's perception of cannabis. And, the only way to get that done is to let everyone you can know the difference cannabis is making for you. No one should lose health care for choosing to care for their health!

TOKIN' WITH THE INFAMOUS: FIP BUCHANAN OF AVALON TATTOO BY HOPPER THE CHRONISSEUR my reason for starting was I was like, ‘Man, a lot of these guys are terrible.’ They can’t even fuckin’ draw. Now there’s people who do, they call it neotraditional, which to me it has good strong shading, good coloring, and the principles of traditional tattooing, but applied in a whole different way. And there are people that do traditional Americana that frankly is probably way better than the stuff that was done years ago. These days you can’t throw a rock without hitting a tattoo shop, everyone and their mother has ink. That wasn’t always the case, though. A couple of weeks ago, I sat down with Fip Buchanan, owner of Avalon Tattoo, and award winning tattoo artist who has been featured in major tattoo magazines dating back to the 80s. He gave me a quick lesson in the progression of tattooing since the late 70s.
HOPPER: Hey brother, thanks for having me in the shop. You’re slammed, so let’s get right to it. How long have you been tattooing?
FIP: I did my first one out of
my house in 1979, and I started in a shop in the fall of 1984 right after I got out of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
HOPPER: What inspired you to start tattooing?
FIP: It’s kind of ironic now, because it’s seen as so mainstream, but it’s really not. A lot of people are still put off by it. Part of the draw for me was to do something nearly illegal. HOPPER: Tattooing was still on the fringe back then.
FIP: Right. It was like, this is
as close to being a criminal as I can be without getting arrested for it.
46
HOPPER: That’s awesome.
Tell VCM readers about your style. I know you’re known for a lot of the Japanese style.
FIP: Yeah, I do a lot of
Japanese influenced stuff, kinda influenced by American traditional. I like traditional things in general. When I first started getting known in the 90s, everybody was doing crazy shit, and I was too. In hindsight, when I see pictures from back then I feel like a lot of it was overdone. People always ask if I know about the legends, and frankly I say “No. I like stuff that looks cool, really.” Whether it be that style or Americana or whatever. It all has meaning, and you can look it up, but I just like putting on a tattoo that looks good, and I feel like I want to do something that is more classic, whatever the style.
HOPPER: What trends are you seeing now? FIP: It’s crazy the things
being done now. The hyperrealism and color portraits and all that. It’s amazing what people do. Some of it, I don’t think is that durable, and even looks kind of weird, but it is amazing that people can do it. I just attended the Los Angeles Tattoo Convention. I was a judge there actually. The level of tattooing there, and in general, is just up so high. When I started, part of
HOPPER: You’ve seen the progression.
FIP: Yeah, back then a lot of the traditional tattooing was terrible. They couldn’t draw, everything was more primitive. They had to work with acetate stencils that if you breathed on it wrong, the powder would fall off the skin. It was a whole different game, but back then a lot more of the guys were craftsmen, as opposed to being artists. Now, you have people tattooing who are incredible artists, it isn’t just a craft anymore. HOPPER: When it comes to
cannabis, is it for creativity, or to relax after a long day? Is it something in the past?
FIP: I used to do it all the time. Before my wife was pregnant, we’d sit around and smoke weed. Once she was pregnant, it wasn’t fun for me to do it when she wasn’t. Our son’s not quite five yet, so I feel like I have to be 100% sober. In the past though, when I couldn’t come up with an idea to save my life, I’d smoke a joint and draw. I’ve done paintings where I’ve started at 10pm and went til 5am, and I’d take weed and ice cream breaks to keep me going. I’d get to the point where I think I’m done and go lay down in bed and get back up and do a little more. So it definitely can be (creative) that way. Now,
I’m used to operating sober.
HOPPER: You have a stellar reputation, not only in San Diego, but all over the tattoo world. FIP: You know, it’s weird to
talk about yourself about stuff like that. When I moved here thirty years ago, San Diego was really known for military tattooing. When we opened Avalon we were really the first shop that wasn’t geared towards the military. There were others who did it, I don’t want to take away from that. Steve Smith was here forever at Ace Tattoo, he’s a great artist. Gary Hoag, who now owns it was there.
HOPPER: So you were geared more towards lifestyle? FIP: Yeah, we were the first
shop to emphasize that, I’d say.
HOPPER: Thanks again for
talking to us. Do you have any shout outs you want to throw before we go?
FIP: I mentioned earlier my
main influences, which would be Ed Hardy. He influenced me a lot indirectly, and I did get to work for him for a while up in San Francisco at Tattoo City. Jack Rudy I met early in my career and he’s known as one of the first guys doing fine line black and grey out of a shop. Just staying up all night talking about this and that with him, it really helped my black and grey tattooing immensely. I’d like to thank all of the people who work for me, and have worked for me. MEDIZIN Gorilla Glue 4 SILVER SAGE Durban Poison
Holy sweet sativa! Dab Man, check out the THC content in this hyped up landrace! Yeah buddy, it smells so invigorating, and about as pungent as some of the concentrate concoctions blasted locally. Vegas boasts some of the best hash produced in America. Heavy duty, fresh and fruity, this grass smacks you right on the ass and fills it with gas. Not the kind you pass, jackass. It's petrol powered gasoline that I'm takin’ to the head. I was wideeyed and bushy-tailed from this wakeywakey flower. I should tuck my bushy tail inside, and you should take a cold shower. This was a personal favorite this month. 31% THC, Ugh! THC- 31.56% Terpinolene- 1.47 mg/g Myrcene- 2.89 mg/g
MEDIZIN Chloe
If you are looking to meet a tough bitch, let me introduce you to Chloe. She looks sweet & innocent, but she will take your ass to school. Don't be a tool and overdo it. That's her only rule. You're the king with the crown, but don't be a clown, and smoke too much, fool, or you might start skippin’ around in a lace gown, ridiculed and trippin’ until you and end up slippin’ face down on your drool. I guess those were Chloe’s things. Time for you to get your shit together and start another day. Don't delay. THC- 25.1% Limonene- 2.3 mg/g Myrcene- 2.24 mg/g Linalool- 0.44 mg/g
Pound your chest and twist up Medizin’s version of the multiaward-winning strain. It boasts 27.4% THC. Look yo, GG4 is everywhere, and that's a great indication of just what this cultivation can do. Stack different brands of GG4 up next to each other, and Medizin Cultivation would end up being a top contender among its Nevada peers. Known for producing a sea of resinous trichomes, Gorilla Glue trim and nuts create such a beautiful shatter, and plenty of it. Its rockin’ a sweet, attractive scent that demands it be thrown into the grinder and rolled up. Ready to toke on this second spliff. Hey, do you have my lighter? Am I the Solid Gold Dancer? All of a sudden, all eyes are on me, so I do a pirouette, and point at the camera. I'm sto-roned. Why do we park on driveways, and drive on parkways? Why do we eat Sher”bet” and smoke Sher”bert”? The purple tones were fantastical. Bill, that's not even a word, said everyone. Pfft, you still read it. And, that's how words get their start. Look, I'm faded, and Sour Banana made me make that shit up. Give G&G the credit for being “fantastical.”
GREEN & GOLD Pure Kush
I was extremely surprised not to find myrcene listed as one of the top three terpenes found in Pure Kush, because this flower made me pause. My eyes were lazy and I had to cut the lights and sink into a deeper chill once I took it to the head. This is a perfect flower to finish off the day. Our whole team had a golden feeling about these greens. I'd like to taste some Green & Gold Moxie…. Any chance someone could make that happen? MEDIZIN Banana OG Live Resin
I realized today, one significant factor that inadvertently played a crucial role in helping me drop 70 pounds and keep it off. Limonene has been found to suppress appetite, and effectively help people lose weight. Just about everything we smoke and dab, is packed with limonene. The State of Nevada requires cannabis packaging to list the top three terpenoids of everything produced by a Medical Marijuana Establishment. And I see this terp on top almost every time I look at product results. So I'm gonna keep dabbing and losing weight. Every time I'm hungry, I'm just gonna drink water and take a dab. Just kidding, that’s not the answer. Who needs water, anyway? I just need another gram of this Medizin shatter. Medizin serves up some of the best BHO shatters in Nevada. Check it out yourself. Don't be a Hater, they're off Sunset & Decatur. See ya later, dabbagator!
What the fuck is goin’ on here? Giddy Up on this…. This sauce smells like a sweet and sour dessert glaze that you'd drizzle on a freshly baked, lemon cake. I'm trippin’ on how sharp and fierce this flower is. Golden Lemon Terp Sauce smells undoubtedly like food. I'm seriously gonna hunt down some lemon cake or lemon cookies, or maybe just a pint of lemon icing and a gallon of Lemonade, and that should do it. Yep. Giddy Up somehow “one-upped” last month’s Sour Cherry Live Resin Terp Sauce. Some people might hate you, but I love your GUTS (Giddy Up Terp Sauce). I'll teach you, A-Z, and present to you, your Dab Degree. Don't worry, there's no fee, Vegas Cannabis is FREE. Everyone knows about flower, but I'm here to show you the power of concentrated cannabis. Don't cower, take a dab. Yo, you smell like a Wookie. Take a shower if you don't wanna hit it, rookie. I'm all about this Kosher Kush cookie. Lookie, lookie, it's time for some lung nookie. Stacked up, linalool would have helped stop your trippin, but since you were slippin, dish it to me. AMA Venom OG Live Sugar
Awe yeah! Venom OG, a strain popularized by Vader Extracts has a permanent warm spot in my heart, that first developed in my lungs a couple years ago. No, the nail wasn't too hot, that heat was from the Vader headquarters. This Venom AMA product finished up as a sugary consistency, which is why I assume it's labeled as an AMA product. Nothing is wrong with it. In fact, it's motherfuckin’ FIRE! Myrcene was all over this lab sheet, so I held it over my head, and dripped it all over my hair, like conditioner. The effects were phenomenal. THC- 70.7% Myrcene- 10.5 mg/g Limonene- 5.69 mg/g Linalool- 4.72 mg:g
CITY TREES Purple Skywalker OG Rosin
Sweet Mother Mary of Solventless Cannabis Extracts! Pay attention here, hash boys and dabbing girls. Big daddy Don Decatur is squishing up his delectable, solventless rosin for his new brand, City Trees. This Purple Skywalker is the bee’s knees, so cough up the small fees, and make sure you say please, cuz you'll be back for another squeeze. You'll be so stoned, you'll be speaking Chinese, and people will point and tease. When they do, translate the lab results into layman's terms to make it crystal clear: There is enough a-pinene in this rosin to help consumers breathe easier. It makes you smarter too. THC- 66.69% a-Pinene- 11.42 mg/g Caryophyllene- 5.321 mg/g b-Pinene- 5.057 mg/g Limonene- 4.441 mg/g Linalool- 4.193 mg/g Myrcene- 3.171 mg/g Bisabol- 2.295 mg/g Humulene- 1.836 mg/g

Try this Skywalker OG Budder, you must. Fight the Dark Side, we must with the light of the Rebel Force. Work together and polish off this vessel of Vader Skywalker OG, and satisfied you will be. Dab together, and patience, we will learn. Young Jedi, as only time can cool the hottest rigs. For the perfect time, a young Jedi must wait. Know, you will, when you look back and there is no black in the nail after your hit. A Master Jedi, you will become, once this is skill is learned. TERPX
Billy Jean Live Raw Sugar They told me her name was Billy Jean and she’ll make you lean. I did my dab, and I dreamed that I was the one, in a trance, on the floor with what I found. People always told me, be careful how much you do. Don't go around breakin’ off big dabs. And people always told me to dab the finest Terpex too. Hey, hey, hey, Billy Jean Live Raw Sugar. It's Terpex that feels number one. I hit that banger, and now I am the one. Then I took another dab just for fun. This Terpex is all mine, son You like that? Was that fun? Hey Mike, what have we done? THC- 78.33% Limonene- 14.15 mg/g Terpinolene- 9.184 mg/g

I'm fuckin’ tripping off the scentsational presentation of this golden reward. How the hell does Moxie do it? I can't keep up with the plethora of flavors these guys run. I know that The Grower Circle gang is banging out some fire, but this is next level shit. My dab rig keeps getting too cold, cuz I can't fish this little jar from out my left nostril. How did I do this? My nose lobes are all stretched out now like I used gauges on my nose. Don't blame Moxie or TGC when you're addicted to their madness! MOXIE Orange Cookies Live Resin Sauce Intro By: Michael Cassini
I opened the container and smelled the citrus in the air. This stuff smells juicy and brightens your day. I could be drinkin’ OJ, but no, it's Moxie Orange Cookies. Oh, I’m back from playin’ hookie. But seriously, this stuff will get you lit, have you up doin’ dishes and shit. Pump up the music, and it practically does your chores for you. It’s a stress-cleaner, not a couch-leaner. THC- 85.93% CBD- 0.66% Terpinolene- 8.1 mg/g Terpinene- 7.4 mg/g Myrcene- 1.8 mg/g
It never fuckin’ ends. This Moxie Lemon Goji has a hold on me and Reggie, Jackson that it is. Dabs in pools, dabs In cars, with wookies, pre-rollers, conservative alcoholics, hypocritical finger-pointers, lawyers, politicians. Everyone’s loving it. All I really need is a “Reggie Jackson” and we could get everyone dabbing, just by letting them smell Lemon Goji Sauce. It's a head-twister, not a headsmasher. But at 84%, you might get bent, not twisted. Holding it up to the sky, I kissed it. Top shelf. THC- 84.92% Limonene- 14.0 mg/g Caryophyllene- 6.4 mg/g Trans-Nerolidol- 4.6 mg/g

I take Alien Monkey, heat my shit up. Then I take a fat dab. Yo baby WHAT’S UP! I offered them a sip. It was their first hit. Just tell us what's good. Alright this stable diddy will make you stronger, by eliminating pains and weaknesses, and will also open your breathing passages, enabling you to breathe this shitty Vegas air.
This Pre-98 Bubba Kush Live Resin Crumble hits smooth once in your mouth, and twice in the body. It makes you want to bump! I was immediately taken to the most live concert I’ve never been to, cuz it was ALL in my own head. I started to nod my head to a beat I created while I was lit. I got myself hyped, and this crumble became my show! I’m not at the concert. I’m performing live to a full crowd! It gave me serious confidence and settled my anxiety as a bonus track. I took another dab and had myself a little encore.

I'm the worst person to give this to cuz I'll be suckin’ on my keychain everywhere I go, until it's dry. But I'm supposed to tell you NOT to smoke anywhere except private property, preferably your own. I like to be more open for advocacy and rebel brand promoting, but my Dabs Agent told me to pause. KABUNKY Cherry Chewy Gummies
If you pick these up after reading this, try this out: Close your eyes before you eat it. Chew hard and fast. The texture of the KABUNKY Gummies feels like you are chomping down on some Hubba Bubba bubble gum. Then you realize that it's not chewing gum because it's disappearing from your mouth and working it's way into your belly. I mashed on all 10 of these Cherry Chewy Gummies, and felt no need to share anything here besides words. The only upgrade would be if they they were 75mg each, instead of the whole pack being 75mg. I'm just uneasily inebriated, and I enjoy a good cannabis hibernation. Total THC/Package- 75.73 mg Servings/Package- 10 Total THC/Serving- 7.57 mg
EVERGREEN ORGANIX Marshmallow Cereal Bar
EVERGREEN ORGANIX Strawberry White Chocolate Bar
This is beautiful. I efficiently wiped out half of this Strawberry White Chocolate Bar with my eyes closed, right before laying down. It tastes like a strawberry milkshake on weed. I must say that I slept like a baby (in fetal position) that night, but without all the shitting and pissing in my diaper, and without the diaper. I did shit myself (figuratively speaking) when I saw these lab results. Finally, an edible that is designed for a large mammal with a medical card. Can we just talk about these Strawberry White Chocolate Bars? NOPE! I'm gonna pinch it off right there. Total THC/Bar- 329.9mg Total Servings/Bar- 24 13.75 mg/Serving
These are magically delicious. Look what these lads whipped up from the Lucky Charms they had in the pantry. Don't put it in the fridge, cuz it gets too crispy. I let mine thaw out, kinda. I resorted to a quick zap in the microwave, since I'm a spoiled-rotten, impatient, only-child brat who wants everything “now”. Good trick too; about 13 seconds will do it. The marshmallow tid bits melted just enough to add a little pop to the brown filler cereal that's always the last to get eaten before slurping up that sugary milk. Those boring shapes are spun together and infused with a little weed, making it good for me. I honestly don't like Lucky Charms, but I devoured this Marshmallow Cereal Bar. I didn't feel much, but my tolerance demands at least 200 mg of THC to experience any recognizable difference in how I feel. 10 mg of THC isn't that much, so anyone can gobble it up, even a hypocritical conservative alcoholic. These were delicious, and were pretty interesting to eat because the texture was really slippery. Nothing stuck to my teeth and each bite pretty much melted in my mouth. I'm not using a figure of speech either, this shit really does disappear when you're chewing on it. So now lazy people barely even have to chew and they can get the cannabis they need. I wanted to share, but that was just a quick thought. I'm an only child, and I deserve the whole pack. The texture of them is worth the price tag. Get these at The Apothecary Shoppe.

TOP HAT CANDIES Cherry Gummies
These are dangerously good. I could eat a few packs every hour, if they were left out in front of me. Chomp em’ up and ingest a small amount of THC. My wife eats about 10 milligrams per night to get a good night’s sleep. These are perfect for her. It's too bad I gobbled them all up in a hot second. This shit packs a punch, and so does Floyd Mayweather, Sr. Sure, his kid has the world spotlight on him, but his pops has my attention. I interviewed him about his use of cannabis topicals, and somewhere along the line, I talked him into laying his registered hands on me. For some reason, I like to get hit by professional fists. It toughens me up, if nothing else. And besides, I have the same Remedy that Mr. Mayweather uses, Remedy Extra Strength Pain Balm. It works. Take it from my fractured rib. ROKIN LIGHTENING DISPOSABLE VAPE PEN I actually filled up the the disposable Rokin Lightning stick before I cracked open the Nitro. I was blown away that I actually respected it, let alone, enjoyed it. If you dab like I do, you understand my low expectations for a low cost disposable wax pen, when your half-grams cost $20-$30 bucks. Plus, I could just take a dab before I had to head out somewhere. My skepticism however was unwarranted, because I absolutely love these little dab pens. Confidently pack up your most exquisite sauce, sugar, wax, crumble, krumble, budder, badder, or whatever else you hold precious, cuz this is no rickety stickity. You’re not going to waste a damned thing. You’re gonna taste every bit of that top shelf you cherish in your medicine kit. Sure, the single-coil, heating element can get a little warm... but that’s because I hit this shit like a champ. If you take moderate hits, your Lightning batteries should last for about 600 hits. Don’t actually count out loud there big guy, that takes away everyone’s high. Shhh. Just load it up again. RokinVapes.com

The History of Cannabis
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> By Jennifer Shepherd, RN The use of medical cannabis dates back to 2900 BC and Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. Prior to that, hemp and cannabis were stated to be used for food and textiles. Ancient Chinese texts cite cannabis was used for treatment in over a hundred ailments including malaria, rheumatism, constipation, absentmindedness, and menstrual cramps, as well as others. In ancient India cannabis was valued as a way to lower fevers and relieve dysentery and is even said to be the treatment for leprosy and was seen by some as a gift from the Gods.
68
In 1762, Virginia awarded bounties for hemp culture and manufacture and imposed penalties on those who did not produce it. Throughout the colonial period, hemp fiber was an important export, not for its intoxicating effects but for its fibers that are exceptionally strong and durable, making this a commodity worth growing. In 1842, Dr. William O'Shaughnessy, an army surgeon who had been stationed in India is rumored to have treated Queen Victoria with the use of edible cannabis for menstrual cramps, which by then was widely used for a variety of ailments, including muscle spasms, rheumatism, and the convulsions of tetanus, rabies and epilepsy; it was also used to promote uterine contractions in childbirth and as a sedative to induce sleep. In the 1840s in the western world of medicine, French psychiatrist Dr. JacquesJoseph Moreau introduced cannabis for suppression of headaches, increased appetite, and sleep. In 1850, cannabis sativa and cannabis indica were added to the United States Pharmacopeia and listed as a treatment for numerous ailments, including
neuralgia, tetanus, typhus, cholera, rabies, dysentery, alcoholism, opiate addiction, anthrax, leprosy, incontinence, gout, convulsive disorders, tonsillitis, insanity, excessive menstrual bleeding, and uterine bleeding, among others. At that time, patented marijuana tinctures were manufactured and sold. Prior to World War I, pharmaceutical supplies of cannabis sativa and cannabis indica were entirely imported from India (occasionally Madagascar) in accordance with the U.S. Pharmacopeia, which specified that it came from flowering tops (nugs, grade A, premium cannabis) of the Indian variety. In 1913, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Bureau of Plant Industry had figured out how to produce what was considered pharmaceutical grade cannabis of equal quality to the Indian variety. When World War I interrupted foreign supplies, the United States
was self-sufficient in cannabis manufacturing, and by 1918 some 60,000 pounds were being produced annually, all from pharmaceutical farms east of the Mississippi. Harry Jacob Anslinger who served as the first commissioner of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Federal Bureau of Narcotics and coined the term marijuana enforced the Marihuana [sic] Tax Act of 1937. Propaganda like reefer madness assisted with the illegalization of cannabis, which caused it to be removed from the U.S. Pharmacopeia in 1942. The American Medical Association opposed both the tax act and illegalization and testified before Congress that nearly a hundred years of medical experience in the U.S. had demonstrated an irreplaceable therapeutic role for cannabis. The 1970s Controlled Substances Act placed marijuana as a Schedule 1 substance along with heroin. The International
EDUCATION & HEALTH
Organization for Migration, American Medical Association, and American College of Physicians opposed this decision. The United States acquired U.S. Patent 6630507 on October 7, 2013, which states: “Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant and neuroprotectant properties useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of a wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as: ischemic (stroke), age-related diseases, inflammatory, autoimmune diseases, and found to have particular application as neuroprotectants: limiting neurological damage following ischemic incident (stroke) or trauma, and in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Currently, cannabis remains a Schedule 1 drug and even though the U.S. government has a patent on cannabinoids and our great state of Nevada has allowed for adult usage, the federal law still has this listed as one of the most dangerous drugs even though anecdotal evidence acquired shows that this plant is one of the safest substances used to assist in pain relief, nausea, and other ailments. There is said to be over a hundred cannabinoids and two hundred terpenes found within cannabis, all having medical value. Data being collected through testing labs is growing and about twelve cannabinoids and about twenty-two terpenes are being tested, which means we are actually just scratching the surface as to what this plant can actually do. If you would like more information about how cannabis can improve your lifestyle or are needing more guidance in the ailments you are trying to treat, please contact itsnursejenRN@gmail.com or call 316-323-7754 to schedule a private consultation. PORTABLE VAPORIZERS AND
CONCENTRATES
W
ith retail dispensaries now open to the public, consumers now have access to a wide variety of cannabis products and options for consumption. Many consumers have been fascinated by the plethora of products available and are curious about the alternatives to smoking. One of the newest and most popular options for cannabis consumers are portable vaporizers. They provide a discrete consumption method and an alternative to lighting up. There are two types of portable vaporizer pens available, a “load your own” style and a pre-loaded disposable. Both styles of pens can be filled with different types of concentrates and seem to have an unlimited variety of flavors. Load your own style pens are purchased separately from the concentrate and come in a variety of styles. These pens can range in price from $50 to $300. Each will contain a heated metal or ceramic element that will vaporize the concentrate that has been placed into the loading chamber. Load your own style pens can vaporize any type of full melt concentrate, allowing consumption of products such as BHO, rosin, or distillate. These pens require some maintenance and only give a few hits before they need to be refilled. Load your own pens can typically hold up to 0.25 grams in one loading. Most pens have different power settings to control the temperature of the hit, and battery life can vary depending on the quality of the vaporizer. The alternative to purchasing a load your own pen is the preloaded disposable. This option is available as an all-in-one pen or a cartridge that may or may not require a separate battery. Pre-loaded disposable pens and cartridges are easy to use and require no maintenance. These products contain 0.5 - 1 gram of cannabis extract. Disposable pens can be made from distillate, CO2, or ethanol extracts, so a variety of strains/flavors can be found in these pre-loaded cartridges. Unlike load your own pens, products such as shatter and crumble cannot be consumed in these disposable pens. CO2 extracts are one of the most popular types of concentrate put into disposable vape cartridges. Another common concentrate used in disposable cartridges is distillate. Distillate is a highly refined extraction product that can be sold as raw distillate, meaning it contains no terpenes, or as a flavored distillate that contains cannabis or non-cannabis terpenes and flavors.

BY OSCAR HUNT BSC & DARRYL JOHNSON, PHD ACE ANALYTICAL LABORATORY
The most common additive used for cartridges is flavorings. There are three types of flavors used in cartridges: cannabis derived natural, non-cannabis derived, and artificial. Terpenes, which make up most of the flavors of cannabis can be extracted from the cannabis flowers and re-introduced in the cartridge. These products have terpene profiles that are nearly identical to the strain and have the tendency to “taste like weed”. Cartridges with cannabis derived terpenes are not in high abundance in the market, but will surely grow in popularity as demand for these products increases. Non-cannabis derived terpenes include those extracted from other plants and those synthetically produced. These isolated terpenes are combined to mimic strain specific terpene profiles before being added into the concentrate. These pens can be very tasty but do not match cannabis flavor very well. These products appeal to those who want to be discreet about consumption. The final form of flavoring is artificial flavors. These additives give pens extremely potent flavor that can match any candy, fruity drinks, or other familiar flavor. Unfortunately, there are safety concerns when it comes to ingesting these chemical flavorings. Studies show that some artificial flavors contain a compound called Diacetyl, which has been linked to lung disease and bronchiolitis. While many great products exist on the market, some contain additives that have raised health concerns. Propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), and MCT oil (medium chain triglyceride) are popular cutting agents used in electronic cigarettes and e-juice. Unfortunately, a lack of regulation of electronic cigarettes has led much of the public to assume these products are safe; however, this may not be true. Studies have shown that PG and VG, when vaporized, create carbonyl compounds such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, as well as acetone, which can be harmful to the consumer and dilute the quality of the product. Vape pens provide a discreet alternative to smoking and a growing market will cause an increase in the strain/flavors and options available to consumers. When it comes to vape pens and cartridges, natural flavoring with no cutting agents will yield the highest quality products. Be sure to ask your budtender how the cartridge was made and what additives, if any, were used when purchasing the product. In this new age of cannabis consumption, knowledge is the key to choosing the right ingestion method and product for you. THE REEFER REPORT In the few short summer months of recreational/responsible adult use cannabis in Nevada, several concerning issues have risen to the surface. Much media attention has been drawn to issues regarding distribution, the cannabis “shortage” and the resulting “state of emergency” in Nevada. Cannabis consumption lounges and tour bus operations appear to be at a standstill for the time being, fanning the flames of public use. One point of concern is the warning that Clark County issued to cannabis businesses regarding advertising for events that promote public consumption – including events held at a person’s home. In an August 7th letter, Clark County Business Licensing Director Jacqueline Holloway reminded licensees that “It is unlawful to advertise and invite the public to consume marijuana at parties, dining events, recreational events such as yoga and swimming, and other types of events, even if events are held in a private residence.” Any cannabis industry business sponsoring or affiliated with such events risks the suspension or revocation of their business license. Other prohibited events mentioned in news reports include painting and karate. “We wanted to remind our licensees that they cannot sponsor events where the illegal consumption of marijuana is encouraged,” said County spokesman Erik Pappa. On August 4th the Las Vegas 420 Cross
Country team received a request from a local team sponsor, to be removed from all collaborative promotional social media postings due to a citation they received from the state regarding sponsoring cannabis events. Although the 420 Cross Country team has never hosted a single cannabis event they must still bear the burden of these initial regulations. The team is currently revising its sponsorship pitch packet to make promotional photos and social media posts optional. The Las Vegas team captain Deuvall Dorsey, more commonly known as the Vegas420runner, is adamant about the fact that all 420 Cross Country events are non-smoking athletic competitions hosted by local running companies that have nothing to do with the cannabis industry whatsoever. “The only official 420 Cross Country events are the races we run. Every race is put on by a local running company completely disconnected from anything to do with cannabis. Our races range from 5k fun runs to 100 mile ultra-marathons, there is nobody smoking anything at the long distance races we run,” said the Vegas420runner. When one door closes another opens. At the end of August, local non-profit WECAN, the largest cannabis advocacy organization in the state, joined the 420 Cross Country roster as an official sponsor. “WECAN is happy to support the 420 Cross Country team in their effort to spread the message that cannabis can be a positive supplement to exercise and post workout recovery,” said WECAN702 Board Director, Michelle Odiorne Ficht. WECAN is sponsoring Becky Madsen, the Las Vegas teams first and only competing female. Becky began running 5ks in 2008 with the Sin City Road Runners. Within a year she had completed her first
half marathon and continued running until 2012 when an injury coupled with school and work, put her on a five-year hiatus. After a traumatic life event in 2017, Becky began running again and has already worked her way back to a half marathon. She’s currently training for her first full marathon this November. In 2018 she plans to become an ultramarathoner by completing her first 50k. Becky has used cannabis her entire adult life but only recently began incorporating it into her running. She used to only smoke flower after runs to relax and calm her body but recently discovered the positive effects of cannabis on training. “Prior to runs, I generally vape sativa or hybrid concentrates. I’ve found that other runners are usually supportive of cannabis even if they don’t personally use it. Many other runners use cannabis, but keep their use of the plant a secret,” said Becky. “I decided to become more of an advocate due to my mother’s recent breast cancer diagnosis. When she began treatment she immediately applied for and received her medical marijuana recommendation, then went to her employer to advise them of her situation and doctors recommendation. Their response was to inform her of their zero-tolerance policy with hints that she was being marked for a drug test. Since then she’s been afraid to medicate and is now addicted to the doctor prescribed pills,” said Becky. Becky now takes advantage of opportunities to be a proponent for federal legalization and helps dispel negative perceptions of cannabis use that have become instilled in our society. She was recently featured on episode 16 of the Puff & Run podcast, an online talk show about marijuana and running. All episodes are free on YouTube, Facebook and REDEFINEcannabis.com. She also published her first race report which can be read at www.420CrossCountry.com. Find out more about Becky and the team on social media @Bmad2u.

ADOPTING FOOD SAFETY GUIDELINES September is National Food Safety month. Each week in September focuses on a different major topic within the food industry. Food safety guidelines are important within the cannabis industry since production and cultivation facilities are growing and preparing products which will be ingested by consumers. Thus, it is imperative that facility owners and managers adopt concrete food safety protocols. This means educating yourself on the proper handling rules that the food industry uses to protect consumers. One example of a food regulation pertinent to the production of cannabis goods is making sure you do not use unsanitary equipment that could result in contamination. Contamination of products in the cannabis industry could create a bigger problem for the future of cannabis regulation. Enforcing the rules and regulations of food safety will help ensure problems like contamination do not happen. Implementing these
76
rules in your facility should be a priority as it only takes one small contamination from an employee to ruin an entire batch of products. Establishing clear guidelines for your employees is the best way to confirm that everyone is on the same page, that your facilities are kept clean, and that everything produced is safe for consumption. >>> Keller + GINGY PATIENT CONCERNS

has commenced to find the best cannabis medicine within our local dispensaries.
Keller is an avid recreational cannabis user while I am an avid medical consumer and together we are able to get a clearer view of what's going on between both spectrums. Due to severe injuries that I incurred from an automobile accident, I am often secluded in my home in excruciating pain, often unable to move, especially after fulfilling my duties as a single mother and full time provider for my household. I, of course, have undergone the usual course of action from the medical field where one pill is prescribed after another and another to try to mask the pain and/or problems. My pain and immobility reached a point I had never experienced. I was desperately seeking a way out of the horrifying pain and was prescribed a high dosage of opioids. Within as little as two weeks, I had developed a dependency, taking medication more often than prescribed while being unable to go one day without at least the doctor recommended amount. I found myself stuck in this cycle and trying everything in my power to keep things as natural as possible by using cannabis as my natural medical alternative. It has been less than a week for me, making the switch from my opioid dependency to strictly cannabis. For those of you who have undergone similar adversities you can empathize with how treacherous this journey is to undergo, willingly reentering into a realm of pain many will thankfully never know. Now, the pursuit
88
New to this exploration, my eyes have been opened to several alarming problems that most medical cannabis patients have been experiencing since legalization this past July. The most startling is a lack of medical patient products being stocked in the dispensaries. After visiting over ten local dispensaries it is apparent that this is not just happening at one location due to bad management but at many locations and it is due to the legislation put into place when recreational marijuana was legalized.. The bill clearly states that only alcohol wholesalers have the exclusive right to the distribution of product for the first 18 months. This may not seem like a problem on paper but as time and federal law would have it, many liquor distributors do not want to jeopardize losing their federal licenses by gambling in the green rush. Because of this conflict there are currently only a few distributors for all of the dispensaries. There simply isn't enough man power to supply patients with the products they desperately need to survive everyday.
HEY THERE, HIGH THERE, HOE THERE! THE DOPE DAMES ARE AT IT AGAIN, AND AS ALWAYS, WE HIGHLY SUGGEST THAT YOU BLAZE ONE WITH US AS YOU TUNE IN TO WHAT WE HAVE BEEN SEEING AND EXPERIENCING AS MEDICAL AND RECREATIONAL USERS SINCE LEGALIZATION.
A second conflict we have encountered is the unfortunate lack of education, knowledge, and experience from budtender.
There are many who have little to no clue how to pronounce the basic terpenes or what they do and how they work together with the endocannabinoid system to help alleviate or eliminate ailments. You as the medical patient have the sole responsibility to become educated and research products, which we have found you can do easily from the various cannabis apps and websites. A third conflict is the types of products being produced and provided within the dispensaries. So many of the edible products, which are great for patients combating pain because of how they are metabolized, are often made with highly concentrated amounts of sugar and additives and have extremely high levels of THC that can easily scare off new patients. As a parent, I desire products that more closely resemble something my son wouldn't think is candy. It has become quite difficult to find anything that has the proper combinations of THC, CBD, CB1, CBN and terpenes with the correct proportions for it to react with my endocannabinoid system.

>>>>>>>> ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Serene Temple Native Las vegas artist SERENE TEMPLE created over 15 WORKS OF ART for PANACEA QUALITY CANNABIS. Her inspiration for the dispensary was aN eclectic, farm fresh, home sweet home feel. VEGAS CANNABIS: What led you to become an artist? SERENE: Like all little kids, my mom got me started with coloring books, but I always wanted to draw my own pictures, not color. It just came natural for me. VCM: Where are you from? SERENE: I'm a native Las Vegan. I live on a little farm on the outskirts of town with my family, 7 chickens, 2 pigs, a huge turtle, a cat, a dog, and a fish pond.
VCM: What inspired you to do this for Panacea Quality Cannabis. SERENE: I was approached by their interior designer, Tina Hague, she had a vision for the dispensary
94
of classy, farm fresh, shabby chic. Living on a farm, I was able to incorporate her vision with found objects from the barn like saw blades, shovels, and wood pallets to give the work a real organic feel. Tina and I worked great together shooting ideas back in forth, it was good energy and really inspirational. VCM: How were the paintings received by the Panacea owners? SERENE: I got a little push back here and there with the pink trees, or Dig it, but overall they loved them. The paintings were all part of the desire to create works that followed the designers vision. Additionally, I also wanted the pieces to evoke the feelings you might have after consuming cannabis. Like the mellow bliss of sitting under a pink tree listening to the birds sing, or the super spaced out feeling you might get which is reminiscent of the outer space painting with the full moon, glitter, stars, and a deep blue galaxy. I try and remain true to my style and not change it up too much to satisfy others. If I created work to other's opinions then I think it might start looking like something you can buy at Target.
VCM: Do you consume cannabis? SERENE: I fully support the consumption of cannabis and am glad it was legalized here in Nevada. I wish more people would consider it first as a natural remedy instead of pain pills and prescription medications. VCM: What is your favorite thing about the Vegas art community/scene? SERENE: Well since having my child I'm really not in it much anymore, I'm really into the mom thing! However, I recently started doing art fairs and have found those to be very fun and successful for my style of work. VCM: Any recommendations for young people wanting to get into art? SERENE: Keep motivated, draw everyday, and be persistent! >> Serene can be found on Instagram #serene_temple

FEEDING THE TRIM CREW
The smell of fresh cannabis flowers permeate the air, developed terpenes dissipate scents you will never taste or be capable of capturing as the buds fully develop. By mid-September the crew comes in and and begins processing the farm. Harvesting early mornings, beating the heat and working inside for cooler conditions during the hotter part of the day keeping the flowers fresher as they get hung in the temperature and humidity controlled room. This is an important time for keeping the plant in a food grade environment, as clean and sterile as possible. Farm to table, pesticide-free, organic product that is food ready for processing into your edibles. I grow cannabis for the intent of food. This is my second year of 100% organic farming situations, and it grew amazing! Making the changes to grow pesticide-free and organic are worth the differences it will make in your health and the people that will consume your products. The trimmers get hungry and usually want meat of some sort and love the vegetables that are from my garden. The guy down the road sells beef from his cows that are organic, grass fed. I buy a freezer worth and use it during the course of the summer to feed everyone. Best beef ever. Ribeye beef cuts and vegetable kabobs are a favorite. After consuming this meal there are lots of laughs and deep sleep so there is strength for another grueling day of harvest.
