Mammoth Labs
Enters the Nevada Market AN INTERVIEW WITH NEVADA COO, JEZUS THE JEWELER Mammoth Labs brand was first introduced in the great state of Washington. The brand quickly became famous there due to its high-quality extracts and topnotch service. Mammoth’s local brand representatives are located in central Washington, where the largest and most complete remains of a Wooly Mammoth were discovered not too long ago (currently, the remains are in England). After some collaborative thought, the team decided to name their brand “Mammoth Labs” with the desire to incorporate the local culture of the brand’s birthplace. Integrating the mammoth and the cannabis oil together (after a few test drawings) their logo was finalized with the help of a great graffiti artist. Connoisseurs around the world soon began to notice the logo and ordered t-shirts and other merchandise from MammothLabs.com. Once established in Washington, Mammoth started looking into other states. Nevada was always on their radar and they would have started earlier, but Covid put everything back a bit. Las Vegas being “the capital of entertainment”, Mammoth wanted to introduce their brand and quality products to everyone. In addition to being in California for a while on a small production basis, Mammoth is currently in the process of a large expansion and expects to be throughout the state soon. Other Mammoth facilities are currently being built in Arizona and Oregon and nearterm goals are an East Coast expansion (primarily New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts). Eventually, Mammoth will also be everywhere else within the U.S.

got into the cannabis industry. I started growing in my backyard and I began working for The Grove dispensary (Pahrump, NV). My friends and I used to do backyard blasting for concentrates in 201112. We were always trying to figure out how to make this or that, how to get higher, how to get better hash, how to get better flavorsand that’s really what led me to doing extracts and concentrates, by doing backyard blasting all the way back in Cleveland, OH! When I moved to Nevada, the owner of Even Cannabis who went to highschool with me reached out. She basically said, “Hey, I know what you used to do in Ohio and we’ve got a lab that we’re setting up here. Why don’t you come and show us what you can do?” I was immediately like, alright, let’s do it! Ever since then, it was a hit and I’ve been making awesome concentrates and good medicine ever since. JW: That’s cool! Did you also work for Las Vegas Cannabis? JJ: I did. I worked for Even for a while, then I worked at a CBD processing facility and then I was brought over to Las Vegas Cannabis and worked there for 2 years. In 2019 I came out with my THCa-infused preroll and that’s what we won the High Times Cannabis Cup with. JW: That’s fantastic! So essentially, cannabis was what brought you to Nevada? JJ: The real reason that I came out to Nevada was my wife (then, my girlfriend) her father had retired from trucking in Pahrump, NV and she told me that she wanted to move to Nevada to be with her dad. So I’m like, “I’m comin’!” I saw the opportunities that were just starting out here with cannabis. So I’ve actually lived in Pahrump ever since I moved to Nevada.
JENNIFER WALKER: Can you give us some general information about your background and how you got into cannabis…
JW: Let’s talk about Mammoth Labs. How did you get involved with them and how did that whole relationship begin?
JEZUS THE JEWELER: I’ve been a marijuana enthusiast since I was a teenager. When I was 14-years-old, I started smoking weed and I’ve been hooked on the feeling of how great it makes me feel… the creativity that it inspires. I have such a passion for it, I truly love it. When I lived in Ohio, my friends and I were involved with the sale of cannabis. We’d get a hold of flower from California and we were always looking for the best quality stuff. Around 7 years ago, I moved out to Nevada with my (now) wife and immediately
JJ: Mammoth actually reached out to me via social media a few times- back when I was working with Las Vegas Cannabis. I decided to step away from Las Vegas Cannabis and put up a message on my Instagram letting people know that I was open to freelancing and looking for companies to work with. They reached back out to me and we connected over the phone which led to me going out to Washington to their lab and their grow. They are super committed to making quality cannabis, no CRC’s so they’re not

bleaching it or using any odd chemicalsthey’re just about making really high quality, good tasting products. That’s what I’m passionate about, as well. All I want to do is make good hash! JW: As far as learning how to make concentrates, are you self-taught? JJ: Yea, I’m self-taught. When I stepped into the legal market in Nevada, Kristin’s husband at Even knew a lot about extracting and I actually learned a lot about the commercial side of extracting from him. JW: What types of products will Mammoth be offering in Nevada?
to smoke. I do think that sometimes concentrates are more of a niche because you need a rig or something in order to smoke them, but I know from experience that the things that sell the most and do the best are products that are ready to go. Live resin carts with the right ratios, especially in Nevada, are really hard to find right now. The infused prerolls give people an opportunity to smoke a concentrate when otherwise, if they aren’t prepared with their own rig, they can’t smoke them. But the infused preroll gives them that opportunity since it’s ready to go and super potent- this is also a huge selling point for Nevada tourists (Las Vegas and Reno, especially) and even locals…they see these prerolls and they’re like, “Wow…I wanna try that!”
JW: That’s such a good point because Nevada is such a unique market because you do have to consider the tourist ratio… JJ: Exactly! I mean, someone flies out to Vegas, how are they going to take a dab? JW: And truly, people who consume concentrates are going to prefer a live resin vape… JJ: Agreed. They’re likely not going for the distillate and botanical terps. JW: How are your quality standards different from what we normally see out there in the industry?
JJ: We are going to be doing 1 gram concentrates, all live resin, mainly badders, diamonds and sauces. We’re also going to do 1 gram live resin carts, 510 thread, and we’re going to do half gram live resin disposables. We’re also doing infused joints with a glass tip and they will be infused with the diamonds. JW: Maybe flower in the future? JJ: In the future, we are looking for space to grow right now or people who will grow for us. We want to bring our own genetics down from Washington. In Vegas especially, a lot of people grow the same stuff and they mimic each other. We really want to bring some rare genetics down here that people don’t see everyday and are more excited to try. We are launching this first week of January 2022. Our launch party is at Mike Tyson’s old house and then we’re hitting the dispensaries! JW: That’s so exciting, people love new things! Are you also handling sales? JJ: I am a little bit but we also have someone helping us out with sales, as well. JW: That’s great. In your experience, what products do you think that consumers generally prefer? What do you think people are really looking for out there? JJ: I think that people are looking for stuff that is potent and ready to go- easy
15
Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
JJ: For all of our concentrates, we’re only going to be doing fresh frozen nug run stuff, we’re not going to be releasing trim run. I personally am hand selecting and procuring all of the flower that we buy. I get to decide what’s good enough and what isn’t. I would never release anything that I wouldn’t smoke myself- I’m a huge connoisseur and all I want to release is good, quality products. JW: If someone asked you what they should look for when they’re buying a concentrate, what would you tell them? JJ: I’d say look at the terpene contentthat’s the main thing. Really get to know how the terpenes affect you and what type of high you’re looking for. That’s honestly how you’re going to figure out how the concentrates are going to work for you is the terpene profile. JW: When you guys do concentrates, do the terpenes burn off? JJ: No, not at all. I have rules in my lab, so when we’re blasting, we go fast and cold so we don’t pull any colors and then post-processing, we go low and slow so we don’t burn terpenes. We’re always preserving flavor and color. When I have it in my possession in the lab, it’s all about preserving color.
16
JW: That’s cool, so no need to reintroduce things… JJ: Exactly- fast and cold when we’re extracting and low and slow postprocessing. That’s the best way. JW: Will you do shatter at some point? Will you press rosin? JJ: We plan on doing solventless, we’re going to bring out rosin badder. We don’t plan on doing shatter, I just want to focus on high-quality concentrates like badders, diamonds and sauce. JW: Are there any situations where you urge someone to stay away from concentrates? An example would be someone who only has experience with flower and suddenly wants to graduate to concentrates…what would you say? JJ: I’d say, “yes you should try concentrates!” Concentrates are cleaner than smoking flower. When you’re smoking flower, you’re smoking all of that plant material, all of that carbon. That is actually an irritant on your lungs. Concentrates, specifically BHO, we can run it so cold that no fats (lipids)... they’re not pulled in the extraction. So you’re smoking literally just the resins of the plant- the flavors, the terpenoids, the THC, the cannabinoids… and that’s all that you’re smoking. You’re
not getting rid of the irritants, so it’s super clean. I feel like people actually save money by smoking concentrates because you smoke way less than traditional flower. JW: That’s great! I was just thinking that concentrates can be so strong, especially for someone who isn’t experienced and mainly consumes flower. But they are actually very clean… JJ: Yea because you’re not smoking any of that filler that you don’t need. BHO is actually a cleaner product than solventless- we pull more flavors and terpenes when we do the BHO extractions, and it’s always going to be more resinous, too. Butane is an element, it can’t break down into anything else. Think about any inhaler or nasal spray- they all have butane in them. So it’s not something that you should be worried about. JW: This is so fascinating…science lessons with Jezus the Jeweler! Follow Mammoth Labs on Instagram @ mammoth_labs_nevada

Budtender of the Month
Las Vegas
SABRINA MAHMUD Budtender at THE dispensary The Southern Nevada Budtender of The Month is Sabrina Mahmud from The Dispensary Las Vegas. She is a budtender that loves the healing power of the cannabis plant and took that passion and put it into budtending. She is a seasoned budtender that really cares about cannabis patients, the experience she provides her customers, and making a difference in people's lives. What was your first industry job? My first industry job in Nevada was lead budtender at a medical facility called Panacea Quality Cannabis. It was a cute boutique shop and cultivation in the Northern Las Vegas Area. That shop will always hold a special place in my heart. What’s your favorite topic to educate customers on? My Favorite topic is going to be cannabinoids and terpenes! I love figuring out what flavors people love and why. I also love, after establishing a customer, getting them exactly what they need based on those elements. What was your favorite product of 2021? It is so hard to pick one. My favorite products of 2021 are Tsunami's “Unicorn Poop” live resin budder and SIP’s 100mg Mai Tai “chill” elixir. But my all time favorite this year has been TWE’s 1g High THC RSO. After having knee surgery, it has helped in more ways than words can explain. Do you have any cannabis related New Year’s resolutions? My New Year’s resolution has been to aim to keep my glass and accessories cleaner. After 2020 and the supply chain shortage, especially on isopropyl alcohol, it’s time to get back in the swing of things! What challenges have you come across that you didn’t expect before you started budtending? Some of the challenges I’ve come across as a budtender have been learning to adjust as the cannabis industry evolves. Information is endless. Knowing how to identify correct information from misleading information is very important. This industry definitely keeps you on your toes.
20
What’s your approach when it comes to helping first time consumers? I LOVE helping out new customers. And my approach is simple- from top to bottom, if they have questions, I’ve got answers. And If I don't have one, I will try to find something as best as I can or point you in the right direction. I started off as a medical patient and I believe that is really important. I’ve been on the other side of the counter. I love teaching methods of consumption/ application, to weight increments, to flavor profiles and effect bases. I find pride in helping teach new customers so they are not overwhelmed by everything there is on today's market. Please– let me help you with your first time needs! What are the top three contributing factors to your success? Three factors- sometimes I like to joke and use my horoscope as a factor, being a virgo and all. But honestly, I’ve always strived to put myself in my customers shoes and picture exactly what they would want. On top of that, I like to move at a fast and efficient pace. Let’s get you in and out with a good convo and a great experience. What’s your favorite way to consume? My nickname is Dabrina and I love to dab. I am not too into the fancy electronic stuff though. I’m a little more old school. I started hot kniving as a teen using my friend's mom’s kitchen knives and hash. To this day, we never told her why they were all messed up and she just threw them all away. I feel like this alludes to why I will forever love my torch and bong as my method of consumption. If you could change one thing in the cannabis industry what would it be and why? If I could change one thing in the cannabis industry, I would like to be able to weigh and package the product for the consumer on the floor. From my experience everyone is different, and they like different things. Some people prefer small buds and some people like big buds. Killing two flies in one swat, we would also be able to smell the buds at the same time. One of my famous sayings is “Your nose always knows what it wants.” What have you been smokin' on? I have been smoking LIT's Watermelon Gelato: sweet, earthy, fruity undertones, say no more. I'm also addicted to City Tree's Mango Haze and REST 1g carts and Trendi's Durban Poison 300mg disposables.

Reno
Amanda Rodriguez Budtender at DEEP ROOTS The Northern Nevada Budtender of the Month is Amanda Rodriguez. She is a fun loving budtender from Deep Roots Harvest Dispensary. Her tenacity and fun loving demeanor makes her an asset to DRH and to the consumers she serves daily. What was your first industry job? Deep Roots Harvest. They took a chance on me with no cannabis industry experience, it has been a great opportunity for me and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon. What’s your favorite topic to educate customers on? Definitely terpenes. I love to educate my customers on the many different terpenes, scent profiles, and effects that they provide. The terpene make up of each plant provides a different experience and a variety of benefits. What was your favorite product of 2021? I am a big fan of our house brand Deep Roots Harvest, they have some really great concentrates that have great terpene profiles and highs. Do you have any cannabis related New Year’s resolutions? Of course! I want a new dab rig each month. So at the end of the year I can celebrate my own 12 days of Christmas. What challenges have you come across that you didn’t expect before you started budtending? How cannabis strains affect everyone differently. One strain that makes someone sleepy can make the next person feel euphoric or anxiety. That's also why terpene education is so important.
What’s your approach when it comes to helping first time consumers? I first ask about their reasons for consuming. Which usually leads to a conversation forming with my customers about micro dosing and the experience they want. What are the top three contributing factors to your success? First my positive attitude; it’s very hard to say “no” to happiness. Second, my comedy stylings, because you want to buy cannabis from someone who makes you laugh. Lastly my determination; if you didn’t leave smiling and satisfied, I didn’t do my job. What’s your favorite way to consume? At the moment it's concentrates but I mix it up every three months to build back my tolerance. If you could change one thing in the cannabis industry what would it be and why? The perception. A lot of people perceive cannabis enthusiasts to be just burnouts, but I will tell you, every cannabis enthusiast I’ve come across in the industry has big goals and visions of a bright canna-future. What have you been smokin’ on? Lil Sebastian Shatter by Deep Roots Harvest - my indica choice every time.

Business Spotlight
>>>> BIGGIE SMOKE SHOP Biggie Smoke Shop is owned and operated by brothers, Samuel and Guillermo Escobar. They recently opened their second location right next to Green Dispensary over on south Decatur. I had the chance to speak with them about their journey into the industry and what sets them apart from other shops. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Are you guys originally from Vegas? If not, how long have you been here and what brought you here? SAMUEL: Vegas has been our home for 20 years. We actually immigrated to Las Vegas from Guatemala City in November 2001. Our parents were missionaries seeking religious asylum so we left Guatemala. STEPHANIE: Tell us about your background. What did you do prior to opening your stores? GUILLERMO: We actually both graduated from Bonanza High School. Sam went to culinary school while I worked at The Palazzo. We managed the first Illy Cafe inside of the casino - we’ve been working as a pair for quite some time. After 12 years, I left to pursue a career in finance and Sam went on to bartend at the Musashi Steakhouse. STEPHANIE: Your first location was the E. Lake Mead store, when did you open that store? How about the Decatur location, when did that open? SAMUEL: We opened East Lake Mead in 2016 and the S. Decatur location opened on April 17, 2021. STEPHANIE: Why smoke shops? Where did the name originate from? SAMUEL: We used to operate and manage another smoke shop in Las Vegas. I had my own ideas of how I wanted things done and through luck and hard work, one thing led to another and we were able to open our own shop. GUILLERMO: My finance career simply wasn’t working out. I was devastated and I wanted to leave Vegas. Failure can really bring you down but I had a family to care for so Sam actually convinced me to stay. I took what I knew from the finance world and Sam took what he knew from the hospitality industry and we went into business together. SAMUEL: It’s kinda funny, we named the shop after Sam’s French Bulldog. We were going to originally call ourselves the Crown Smoke Shop but at the last minute, we decided on Biggie and used the crown as our logo. STEPHANIE: That’s great! Tell me about your team. GUILLERMO: Our team is one of a kind. To be honest, you can go to any smoke shop in town and you will see the difference between our team and other teams. We focus on training our staff on customer service, product comprehension and proficiency. We have one of the most dedicated teams in the industry and we can show it. If you need some tech support for any electronic dab rig or vaporizer, we might have the answer. If you need suggestions for a better banger bucket for your water piece, we have a recommendation for you. Got the latest tech but don't know how to work it? Bring it down to any of our locations, and our team will help you. SAMUEL: We’re all about family here at Biggie and not in that corporate kind of way. We appreciate our team. Without Chris, Elias, Shay and Esteban we couldn’t do what we do - Guillermo and I have helped our guys beyond just giving them a job and a paycheck. I’ll admit we’ve had to learn the hard way but it hasn’t changed our generosity and I’m hoping we keep expanding.

STEPHANIE: What items can consumers expect to find in your stores? GUILLERMO: Mainly we have the latest items on the market without leaving out the classic items many people love. Starting with our water pipe selection, we carry name-brand items for everyone, sizes ranging from 5” tall to 4' tall with a variety of functions to give you an excellent smoking experience. Next, we carry the latest electronic devices for concentrates as well as e-liquids and vaporizers. We have an ample selection of hookah pipes and a tobacco flavor selection for them. When it comes to rolling trays, we have a vast array of selections, fitting your needs on every level. Our tray selection is only topped by our grinder variety. All in all, we have something for everyone. STEPHANIE: You have been a strong supporter of the local cannabis industry - are you cannabis consumers? Do you believe in the healing benefits of cannabis? GUILLERMO: My wife and I smoke recreationally but Sam on the other hand is more supporter-only. SAMUEL: He’s right, certain strains make me paranoid. I have been experimenting with Delta-9, CBD and CBG. I find that it helps with my stress and anxiety. STEPHANIE: Have you partnered with or done any collaborations with any of the dispensaries here locally? SAMUEL: Our neighbors at The Green Dispensary have been more than accommodating. They’ve got an amazing staff. We always do our best to make them feel like they’re welcome at Biggies. We even do a weekly Taco Night on Wednesday and The Green sponsors the meals for their customers. We’ve popped up with the All Access Vegas team at Exhale and Cannastarz. GUILLERMO: Honestly, we love the Las Vegas Cannabis Industry community. We partner with local influencers, do giveaways, host and sponsor events for most brands that come our way. Since Biggie 2 opened we’ve sponsored Dance Battles at Ninja Kareoke, Raves with EvilTwins, Secret Comedy Nights, and most recently sponsored the latest Tuesday Blend. STEPHANIE: Anything you want to add? SAMUEL: Thank you to all of our supporters, staff and patrons. In just a short amount of time, we’ve expanded and grown our family and stores. Please be on the lookout for Biggie in 2022. We’ve got big things planned for the Las Vegas Valley! The Nowell Family Foundation Strives to Provide Treatment to Musicians.
BY: JOSH KASOFF
As unfortunate of a reality as it is to admit, drug addiction and abuse is tragically common among musicians. Across decades, far too many talented souls have become victims of a disease that knows no socio-economic bounds. From psychedelic rock legend Jimi Hendrix to Port Arthur, Texas legends Janis Joplin and Chad “Pimp C” Butler, AC/DC’s Bon Scott, Layne Staley from Alice in Chains, Dee Dee Ramone, Scott Weiland of the Stone Temple Pilots, Hillel Slovak, the original guitarist for the iconic band Red Hot Chili Peppers and son of Holocaust survivors died at 26 from a heroin overdose. Even more modern examples that still hit close to home for millions such as Mac Miller and Juice WRLD, drug addiction and abuse is a sadly prevalent epidemic that affects musicians across the board. One such wildly talented yet unfortunate victim of drug addiction in the mid-1990’s, right when his rising band was putting the finishing touches on their album that would go on to become one of the decade’s best and have hundreds of millions of Spotify streams, was named Bradley Nowell. Although fans of the ‘90’s era ska-reggae sound that had increased in popularity and that Nowell popularized throughout his music may know him by a far more commonly known name. Brad from Sublime. He had a high-energy stage presence and playing style like few others of his contemporaries and a clearly evident gift for music and the production of songs that aren’t easily forgettable. Using the reggae music he had been a fan of since childhood and combining the alternative/ska genre that was taking off at the time, Sublime is an example of a band

the masses and over-encompassing the legacy of Sublime has become in the decades since his passing. From this tragedy and loss of talent however, an organization dedicated both to Bradley’s memory and to finding musicians the help they desperately need to overcome addiction was formed. First seeing their booth at the recent Reggae Rise Up Festival in town, I was captivated by their story and the mission of the Nowell Family Foundation.
Bradley in Mexico - Circa 1973 that defined a sound that they’ll forever be associated as a trailblazer for. Whether for the catchy riffs and equally talented band members or the attentiongrabbing lyricism that certainly stood out in terms of substance, Nowell became one of the most legendary and legacyestablishing musicians of the diverse decade of music that was the 1990’s. To this day, both within the culture associated with both cannabis and reggae/ ska music communities, Sublime’s music is fondly remembered and still jammed out to by millions across the world. Through the unique sound they pioneered, Nowell cemented himself in music history. Even for those who aren’t the most dedicated of reggae/ska fans, Sublime is a name that holds prestige to it. Terribly though, Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose on May 25, 1996 at 28 years old, never truly seeing how adored by
Instead of going immediately into the mission statement, a representative with the organization asked a question of great importance to the organization and reggae/ska fans alike. “What’s your favorite Sublime song?!” she excitedly asked. (Don’t worry y’all, I said Santeria immediately). Through contacting the organization, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kellie Nowell, one of the founders of the Nowell Family Foundation and the sister to Bradley himself. While Bradley’s untimely death was certainly a driving force behind the formation of the organization, a more current matter still deeply involved and connected with Bradley acted as a catalyst of sorts in that formation of the group that hopes to help musicians just like him. “Unfortunately his son, Jakob, was following in his footsteps.” Kellie said. Jakob, who was born in June of 1995, was less than a year old when his father died. As tragic as it was to see Jakob have his

own struggles with addiction, it was the true passion of his father that subsequently saved his son; that being music and its abilities. “When he was in a treatment program,” Kellie explained, “and we started to see the importance of music for musicians in recovery and to see what a big role it played for Jakob and realizing that was something missing for Brad that made it difficult to stay in any program. Just having that music element, because it was such a huge part of who Brad was. So that got us thinking and talking about it and just realizing how close we had come to losing Jakob the same way we lost my brother. So it was a wakeup call that maybe there’s something we can do to help others.” Through this desire to help other people, Kellie saw how necessary addiction treatment for musicians is and the ultimate dream behind the Nowell Family Foundation was formed as a result. Bradley’s House, a full-fledged six-bedroom residential 90-day treatment program dedicated to helping musicians struggling both with addiction and financially that may not be able to afford other more expensive forms of rehab. Starting with a one-week medical detox in a medical facility followed by integration into sober living following those 90 days.
“Hopefully we can establish a community of sober musicians,” Kellie said, “and an aftercare program where they come back and speak to those currently going through the program. With my nephew being a musician, he’s got almost five years of sobriety now in January and it’s a challenge. It’s a challenge being around that environment and not participating in any of that. So hopefully, we’ll be able to develop a whole community of like-minded artists who can support each other when they’re on the road.” Along with treatment, Kellie also hopes the organization will help to destigmatize those going through addiction in the music industry. When shame and stigmatization stands in the way of someone receiving addiction treatment, they’re often hesitant to even attempt treatment. “We all struggle with something in our lives. Nobody’s perfect and it’s part of the human condition. If they’re ashamed of their struggles, they’re not going to get the help they need. But if we can destigmatize addiction, then hopefully it becomes more comfortable talking about it and more normalized and people can get the help they need without feeling ashamed.” Destigmatization is a key step in getting someone to treat their addiction, especially in a community where those addictions run
so rampant (such as musicians). Although the organization doesn’t yet have a physical house to send patients to, which is what Bradley’s House will eventually serve as, the Nowell Family Foundation has multiple Board of Directors members with years of experience in drug recovery. They’re more than happy to provide referrals to existing centers and recommendations until Bradley’s house does open. Once again, Kellie stressed how important music is for musicians going through recovery: “Music is a big part of their lives and you can’t just take that away when they’re going through the biggest struggle of their life. You gotta still provide music as a means of therapy and expression but it also gives hope and comfort. A successful program would recognize the challenges and barriers there are in getting help to break those down which is what I’m trying to do by being a nonprofit and getting grants and donations. Having a program that goes beyond and maintains contact and encourages people to encourage people in their sobriety.” Despite myself just learning about the organization at Reggae Rise Up 2021, Nowell Family Foundation has presented a booth detailing the mission of the
29
Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
organization and the eventual plans for Bradley’s House at several music festivals and large events of the sort. As for where the festival that the organization’s first presentation was, the location couldn’t have been more properly fitted towards the history, sound and lyricism of Sublime. “The first one we did was at a festival called Music Tastes Good in Long Beach.” From the location that will forever be synonymous with her brother’s band, Kellie then took the organization to festivals such as Cali Roots in 2019, the One Love and Arizona Roots Festival in The Grand Canyon State. In the past year especially, the message behind Nowell Family Foundation has received significantly more recognition thanks to Law Records and their project The House That Bradley Built. In total, it’s a 24-song collection of several of the most prominent artists in current reggae music such as Common Kings, Trevor Young of SOJA and The Movement. The last track on the collection, Rivers of Babylon, is even covered by Jakob Nowell himself. With songs spanning the Sublime catalog from 40 Oz. to Freedom to their final eponymous album, it’s a magnificent sight to see how impactful and influential that Sublime’s music is to so many musicians even 25 years following Bradley’s passing. Furthermore, all the proceeds raised from sales of the album collection will be going to turning Bradley’s House into a reality:
30
“The record has really expanded our visibility within the community.” Kellie described. “At Reggae Rise Up, the majority of people who came up to the booth had already heard of the organization, so that was nice. If the organization isn’t already tied to Bradley Nowell’s legacy enough, the Board of Directors includes multiple family members of Bradley’s, from his father to Kellie and even his son Jakob. Miguel Happoldt, a producer and musician who frequently worked with Sublime and even took care of Bradley’s beloved Dalmatian and mascot named Lou Dog after Brad’s passing, is also on the Board of Directors. “Everyone wants to do something to help the opioid epidemic, but they don’t know how. And I think this organization gives a way for people to be a part of a cause that is meaningful to them in multiple ways. Maybe they know someone who struggled with addiction or maybe they lost somebody, but then also their love for Sublime and my brother’s music gives them a feeling that they’re part of something that’s really kind of extending Brad’s legacy in a whole other area. I know for me and my family, it’s been very therapeutic because we feel like it’s something we can actually do. We can take that grief and turn it into something positive to help other people avoid the same thing.” PHOTOS PROVIDED BY THE NOWELL FAMILY FOUNDATION

The Struggle Towards Inclusion in Nevada's Cannabis Space
mpacted persons want practical solutions to reconciling the damages created by racist drug policies that left families torn apart and locked out of jobs and mainstream wealth building. These policies were put in place for no other reason than to criminalize Black and Brown culture. With Nevada’s cannabis industry bringing in over $1 billion this year, it’s more important than ever to lower the barriers of entry for individuals who carried the burden of cannabis criminalization for decades. The ACLU has defined impacted people as primarily Black and Latino in the state of Nevada, while Indigenous communities also have cause for reconciliation. Out of the 86 dispensaries in Nevada just two are Black-owned. Some may argue this is a reflection of the Black population, however this truth did not curtail the arrest of Black individuals who are nearly 4 times more likely to be charged with weed charges than whites, even though they use at the same rate. Furthermore, whites outnumber every other race in common professional roles in Nevada's cannabis industry by at least 20%70% in terms of representation, according to the 2021 Demographic Report by the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board. The roles included in the report are Owner/ Manager (over 60% occupied by white individuals), Board of Directors (over 70% occupied by white individuals), Executive
34
>>> By Naoka Foreman Board Member (nearly 80% occupied by white individuals), and employees (over 50% occupied by white individuals), leaving other racial groups fluctuating amongst each other in other roles at barely over 20% in representation. Nearly 50% of responses that informed the report came from cannabis retail facilities. CEIC introduced two bills last legislative session that directly confronts systematic barriers of entry in the cannabis industry. AB 322, carried by Assemblyman CH Miller, creates an attainable pathway into the cannabis industry with Portable Cannabis Vendor Licenses (PCVs) and Canna-Event Organizer Licenses. With less overhead cost, this dramatically reduces the barrier of entry. Economic justice is one of the main components of social equity, and lowering the barrier of entry has to be a priority, just like turning a profit has been. Disenfranchised people deserve to build a sustainable lifestyle or generational wealth like the rest of the wealthy folks who cashed in on what once tore families apart. Make it about them and support the legalization of PCVs and Canna-Event Organizer licenses. CANNABIS ADVOCACY
Serving Social Equity By: Naoka Foreman
Understanding the current “cannabis rush” and what it should mean for persons harmed by failed cannabis laws, at a Clark County Commission meeting A’Esha Goins said that Nevada has the chance to reconcile the harms created by failed drug policies by putting dollars toward social equity programs. She said
this while presenting Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community’s (CEIC) Pathway to Ownership program. The program is held in the heart of the Black community, on the Westside of Las Vegas at Nevada Partners. With only 40 seats available for the first cohort, classes are intimate and engaging. Pathway to Ownership is an incubator program created to assist aspiring cannaprenuers with business planning to increase their chances of success in the cannabis industry. CEIC has been a voice for individuals disenfranchised by failed drug policies since 2018. Still young and not nearly at its peak, CEIC believes the newly accepted legitimacy of cannabis should equal the freedom, opportunities, and equity of individuals impacted by previous
laws that criminalized the plant, people, and cultural practices. As mentioned in Forbes magazine, “social and racial equity must become foundations rather than buzzwords in cannabis — and be treated as complex processes, needing patience and investment — if this entire industry is going to succeed.” Contact CEIC Nevada about partnership opportunities at contact@ceicnv.org Sources: CAC Subcommittee meeting, CCB, Clark County Commission Public Meeting, Forbes Naoka Foreman is the Creator of @ newsfromthemargin and the Comms Director for @ceicnv.

CALI BUD FEST
STEPHANIE: Why cannabis-centric events? Are you a cannabis consumer?
STEPHANIE: How long have you lived in Vegas? Where are you originally from?
CHILI: I'm not a consumer- believe it or not, I'm allergic. My wife however consumes more than enough for the both of us. I love a challenge, which is why I'm known for producing extreme events. I got into cannabis events in 1990 because it was a challenge that everyone else was afraid of. Just like the challenge I met through the 80’s producing punk rock shows. During the 80's, punk rock shows were dangerous and banned almost everywhere. I love a great challenge!
CHILI: I moved to Las Vegas in February 2014. I’m originally from Long Beach and Huntington Beach.
STEPHANIE: Your upcoming event, Cali Bud Fest takes place in early April what can we expect at this event?
STEPHANIE: How did you get started producing festivals?
CHILI: What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, right? I think everyone knows how our HempFest events went in Vegas and that's pretty much what you can expect from the new Cali Bud Fest.
Cali Bud Fest comes to Vegas this April and we had to find out what the festival will entail. The festival owner, Chili, sat down with us to give us some insight into the event.

our newest cannabis music festival Cali Bud Fest in Las Vegas 4/2/22 and also in NorCal 9/17-9/18. We are also planning a Southern California show to be announced at a later date.
CHILI: I have been producing concerts and music festivals for over 35 years including the Sundance Film Festival, live concert circuits and over 30 concert venues throughout the United States. I started booking punk rock shows in the early 80’s with long time friends Gary Tovar and Paul Tollett. We co-produced some great shows together during the 80's. In the 90’s, I focused more on producing and building up cannabis music festivals then selling the festivals while Gary and Paul continued in the mainstream creating Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and Day N Vegas. I produced a hemp/harvest festival in Humboldt county in 1990 that did really well and I believe that led to the influence of Seattle HempFest that began a year later. This led to many years of cannabis music festivals around the globe. In 2014, I brought HempFest to Las Vegas and several other locations. Licensing the name with my old partners at Seattle HempFest, I produced several large HempFest events in Las Vegas reaching 20,000 attendees. I also licensed the use of the name to Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Mexico. In 2018 I sold all my interest in Las Vegas HempFest and after a long Covid break we are now introducing

STEPHANIE: Tell us about the Hemp Casino that will be included in the event. CHILI: It's Vegas so we must have a gaming room. Due to cannabis and gaming laws this will be a no-currency exchange gaming room. It's all for fun. We will have craps tables, roulette tables, poker and blackjack tables. We may even have a few slot machines that dispense Cali Bud gifts.

STEPHANIE: You have some great music planned, tell us about the lineup. CHILI: We are known for our killer music lineups. It's all in the talent buying and negotiating. Definitely a dope lineup of 420-friendly artists and stage hosts. We even have a surprise performance…

JANUARY HOROSCOPES ARIES (MARCH 20 – APRIL 19) As the new year begins there are many things to look forward to including expanding your network and future opportunities to express yourself. Be particularly aware of how you communicate this month. Not only do we have Mercury stationing retrograde on the 14th, but Mars in Sagittarius until the 24th will emphasize your bold approach to problem solving. Try a ‘chill pill’ Kanha Tranquility gummy before any intense convos to soften blunt communication. While Venus is retrograde in your solar 10th house until January 29th, you will likely find yourself considering your career goals and preferences to prepare for success you would like to manifest in the next year. TAURUS (APRIL 19 – MAY 20) Uranus the planet of surprise and awakening stations direct in Taurus on the 18th shaking things up to align you with the opportunity to reach goals that may have been on hold since August. This transition may even bring some spontaneity to your typically dependable patterns. It may feel a bit chaotic since your old ways are being revised. Try taking it easy as you navigate these changes with a strong, heady strain like the Mac n Cheese by Nature’s Chemistry. As your ruling planet Venus stations direct at the end of the month, it will be a great time to analyze past relationships or comforts. GEMINI (MAY 20 – JUNE 20) Reflecting on the last year, you probably experienced some changes in your routine and stability in which you were the main character of several dramatic, shifting sagas. It’s important for you to regroup and strategize behind the scenes this month. With your ruling planet Mercury moving into the airy sign of Aquarius before it goes retrograde on the 14th, you may be feeling all over the place. We recommend Medizin’s OGKB 2.0 shatter; an earthy, grounding experience that will keep you serene if you’re feeling stressed. When the sun enters Aquarius on the 19th, it’ll give you a blast of enthusiastic energy to move forward! CANCER (JUNE 20 – JULY 22) January has many transits that may cause you emotional inner turmoil. Specifically, the retrograde periods of Venus and Mercury this month will create strong emotions that you may have trouble expressing. Try to take time to really understand the cause

of these feelings instead of getting caught up in the details. The full moon in Cancer on the 17th will be a great time to focus on your drive to succeed but be careful that this intensity of ambition doesn’t turn into arrogance and conflict. Having a preroll pack handy like the 10 pack of Flo White #7 by State Flower will help prevent any blow ups. Don’t worry, everything will improve when the Sun enters Aquarius on the 19th when things start to feel lighter. LEO (JULY 22 – AUGUST 22) If you’ve been feeling stuck at work since the Summer, Uranus moving direct on the 18th will help shake up any stagnant energy. With so many planets in fixed signs, you may find yourself particularly stubborn which can come off as arrogance. This hubris is accentuated when Mercury stations retrograde on the 14th, which may cause miscommunications in which you’re misunderstood. Keeping a 500mg disposable around, like the calming Fruity Pebbles by City Trees, will be helpful for staying flexible. It is a good time to evaluate whether excess pride may be causing problems in your life. VIRGO (AUG 22 – SEPT 22) Use the new moon in Capricorn on the 2nd to set goals and intentions for the new year. You will be feeling the love this month Virgo! Your fifth solar house of romance gets fired up with action from Venus and Pluto, creating magical moments of intimacy. However, Venus retrograde may have you reviewing the past with your partner. The 100mg intimacy oil by Evergreen Organix is a great option to enhance any erotic experiences and focus on the present moment. Your ruling planet Mercury turns retrograde on the 14th meaning you should take caution with negotiations and pause finalizing any contracts during this time. LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 23) Things are starting to smooth out as you create a solid foundation for the year ahead. Residual feelings from the instability of last year could still be floating around. You may have emotional baggage to clear up around the home and family. Take some time to focus on open communication with loved ones to clear the air. It will be easier to move forward when your ruling planet Venus moves direct on the 29th. Try a light and soothing six pack from Cann in Lemon Lavender to share with anyone you want to work things out with.
SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 21) You’ll get a lot of positive attention this month as compliments and invitations are sent your way. The new moon on the 2nd creates an opportunity to build a foundation for your long term plans this year. Especially with Uranus moving direct on the 18th in your solar 7th house of partnership, matters affecting collaborators may be cast in a new light. However, Mercury retrograde square your sun sign will likely cause miscommunications in which you find it difficult to express your feelings. You may become easily frustrated when people fail to understand you, but try your best to act with patience. Having a calming vaporizer around like the Chill Out blend by Vapure will help you avoid irritability. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21) The transits of Mercury in the beginning of the month help you hone your mental acuity to absorb lots of juicy knowledge. Use this to your advantage to learn as much as you can during this time until Mercury stations retrograde on the 14th. Your productivity is high while Mars is in your sign until the 24th and you’ll likely feel a boost of assertiveness. This, combined with the aspect of Venus, increases your charm and influential appeal. Overall, things will feel fun and flirty. Just remember to avoid burnout and take a breather with something potent like the Grateful Ghost OG infused preroll by Roar. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19) Generosity defines you over these last few months and your acts of kindness make you feel really good about yourself. Enjoy this boost of confidence while the Sun is in your sign. The new moon on January 2nd is a great day to evaluate your goals whereas the full moon in Cancer on the 18th will likely cause lots of unnecessary emotions. Take it easy and lay low on the 18th when the full moon energy is paired with Uranus stationing direct. Eating some super strong Cannavative Indica RSO should help you get through it and feel a lot better on the other end. AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 18) January is a great month for you to focus on self exploration and develop the skills you need to reach your highest potential. With Mercury moving into Aquarius on the 1st, your mental game
is sharp paired with the new moon on the 2nd makes it a great time to plan for the future. You’ll feel very positive and optimistic all month long with increased intuition towards helpful information or even epiphanies. A happy strain like Miss Africa by Fleur is a great option to celebrate yourself! Be careful you don’t overextend your energy as you may find yourself wanting to appease everyone around you. PISCES (FEB 18 – MAR 20) This month may feel a bit stressful but you easily navigate it with grace if you maintain an optimistic outlook. Relationships and responsibilities likely go through a positive development. Try to stay polite and sensitive to those around you when communicating and you’ll make it through Mercury stationing retrograde on the 14th without any quarrels. Let enhanced intuition thanks to Neptune in Pisces guide you with increased flexibility in recognizing and fulfilling the needs of others. Try a euphoric, uplifting strain like Pink Cookies by Greenway Medical to keep you happy and high.

This month, we introduced an amazing line-up of four potent Nature’s Chemistry flower strains which were grown and harvested by a team led by four, local Chaparral High School alumni. When I first glanced at the lab results, I was skeptical to believe that everything was really over 25% and with absurd terpene profiles. But I sat with each flower and they all looked, smelled, and tasted extremely stoney.… For me, this Strawberry Banana strain was the best of the four. Yes, I enjoyed it more than their 35% beast, Garlic Cookies. You will get tingly chills, lick your lips, smile and give it the nod as you agree that this herb tastes like a sunset. Yeehaw, Cowboys. Let's ride into the Strawberry Banana sunset.

the power of terpenes id you know, there are over 100 terpenes identified in nature? The cannabis flower has its own unique terpene profile different with each harvest. Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants bringing their unique scent, taste, and each having powerful medicinal properties. That’s right, medicinal properties! Terpenes are often known as the beautiful smells we inhale from our fresh bud, but they are so much more than aroma. They hold powerful medicinal properties that can help patients accurately choose their medicine, and recreational consumers choose their experience. In North America there are eight main terpenes recognized and more commonly studied in the cannabis plant. They are myrcene, ocimene, terpinolene, limonene, pinene, humulene, linalool, and caryophyllene; each having their own distinct aromatic and flavor qualities, as well as imparting a host of therapeutic benefits. Living in the state of Nevada we are lucky that labeling requirements require all products to have the top three terpenes listed, determined by the cannabis testing facility. This gives us as consumers the power of truly knowing what we are buying, and how it will affect us. We are going to learn about the three most prominent terpenes you will see when purchasing at the dispensary: myrcene, caryophyllene, and limonene. Myrcene is the most abundant terpene found in cannabis and extremely popular for patients with chronic pain conditions, and for good reason. Studies have shown myrcene acts as a powerful analgesic and reduces inflammation in the body. It also has neuroprotectant properties, is a natural sedative, relaxing our bodies, minds, and muscles, and is also anti-catabolic. In 2015 there was a study conducted in a cell model of osteoarthritis, that showed myrcene helped to slow down cartilage destruction and OA progression. Studies have been conducted more and more throughout the years on this powerful terpene, however myrcene has been utilized medicinally for many years. In Brazilian folk medicine it was used to treat diabetes, and in countries where lemongrass is native, the locals often chew lemongrass stalks to improve dental health, harnessing the plant's antioxidant properties. You read that right- lemongrass. Terpenes are found in all plants, not just cannabis. More than likely you have ingested myrcene through mangos, lemongrass, bay leaves, cardamom, thyme, chamomile, and even in our favorite brews through hops. This powerful terpene is all around us and we can leverage this knowledge to boost the effects of our cannabis. Anecdotal research has shown eating a terpene rich food roughly 45 minutes prior to consuming cannabis can augment the effects
52
of our cannabis. Lemongrass tea is a great option to reach for to help boost the effects of our myrcene rich flower. Beta Caryophyllene is a common terpene in cannabis and is also the first “dietary cannabinoid,” being a common component of food that has GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status, and is approved by the FDA for food use. Chances are you have had this amazing terpene in your food through the way of black pepper. It is also found in rosemary, lavender, oregano, basil, caraway, and more! I bet you didn’t think your spaghetti was filled with caryophyllene! Besides being a delicious peppery terpene, it is packed with therapeutic benefits. Caryophyllene is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antinociceptive, which means it blocks the detection of a painful stimulus by sensory narcotic analgesia. This is a great terpene for patients with pain to reach for to bring relief and a favorite of mine. It also has anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects, helping to uplift our moods, is antibacterial, an antioxidant, and if that wasn’t enough amazing benefits, studies are being conducted in regards to ingesting caryophyllene as a potential treatment for alcoholism. In 2014 a study was conducted in mice where the terpene reduced voluntary intake of alcohol, which showed promising results to lead to future research. Next time you order black pepper chicken, just think of all the amazing benefits your body is about to absorb with your delicious meal. Last but not least, limonene. This is a common terpene you will find in cannabis and most likely have enjoyed a citrus strain that is packed with this powerful terpene. Found in citrus rinds, mint, rosemary, bergamot and more, limonene is all around us. Limonene is anti-bacterial, being harnessed in manufacturing for years in our household cleaners, fragrance, and personal hygiene products. It is also great in lotions and soaps as it promotes wound healing to the epidermal layer, and the antioxidant effects of limonene helps with anti-aging for our skin. Many skincare companies are leveraging it’s skin rejuvenating and healing properties. You may have settled your stomach with a glass of lemon water or a mint before, that’s the power of limonene at work too. It is great for gastrointestinal support. Limonene is also a natural analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and mood booster, while helping to combat depression and anxiety. Citrus has the highest limonene percentage, so reach for your favorite fruit before you smoke your favorite limonene strain and help to boost the effects of this powerful terpene even more! Having access to knowing the top three terpenes in our favorite products gives us power, through the power of terpenes. Terpenes help to determine the experience we have with our cannabis. When we find a strain or product we love, it's important
Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014
to note the terpenes of the product, because if we match those terpenes with another product, we will get similar effects. As a patient I know my body loves high myrcene, caryophyllene, limonene, and linalool. I need at least 5mg of myrcene in my flower to get out of bed each day. I never buy off strain names, and when asked my favorites, I list terpenes. Each strain and each harvest within a strain can yield different amounts. This is why as consumers, and especially patients we need to know what our bodies like and need. So we never waste our money and always get what we will like and the experience we expect from our cannabis products, through harnessing the power of terpenes.

Humboldt Infuzions, Terpene Profile Finding Your Terpene Profile for Optimum Health
Longtime Humboldt local, Jenny Rhae, began her foray into healing plants after presenting with Lyme’s disease, creating her own healing tinctures, salves and more, for her own personal healing. She opened Humboldt Infuzions in the City of Arcata, right on the Plaza in the summer of 2019, filling it with local plant-based products, eventually adding her own line of topicals and tinctures made with organically sourced material. Humboldt County has long been known for its farming of some of the world’s best cannabis flower. But Humboldt is also an agricultural hub providing for its own, with small truck farmers still offering produce and herbs to local markets and at its epic Farmers Market each Saturday on the Arcata Plaza - the city known as “60s by the Sea.” Humboldt is sustainable in local foods and livestock because it has to be. Separated by what’s known as the Redwood Curtain, the region is five hours above the nearest major city of San Francisco and and five hours below the next largest City of Eugene, Oregon.
Super Plants, Superfoods Cannabis is just one superfood from the garden Humboldt produces that has myriad benefits for humans and animals alike - with more than 700 beneficial compounds and counting. Most beneficial plants have the same or similar benefits, addressing all of our 11 biological organs, with fighting inflammation, infection, warding off illness and strengthening the immune system at the top of the list.
56
Each beneficial plant also has its own unique properties. For instance, chamomile is calming, moringa fights fatigue. Too much THC can trigger anxiety,

not treat it. Knowing what you need from each plant is key (see Daily Dose on Superfoods). The medicine of super plants - not just cannabis - is found in each compound profile, including cannabinoids and terpenes - just two components that make up complex compounds of each beneficial plant. Most beneficial spices and herbs have fragrance because we have a nose, drawing us to them, because we need them. It’s a symbiotic relationship. Superfoods or super plants, like cannabis, address all 11 of our biological systems via the endocannabinoid system. It’s not rocket science, it’s just how plants work with our bodies to keep us in homeostasis keeping us healthy and feeling good. Studies find that adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet for just two weeks helps reduce feelings of depression. Why? Because many of the compounds in beneficial plants, including cannabis, raise endorphins quicker than a morning jog, creating dopamine in the brain, giving an overall feeling of well-being.
and clients are surprised at the types suggested for them. When you start going through the benefits of each plant, it’s apparent those benefits often match what the client is needing for whatever symptoms or ailments they may be suffering from.” This writer had her profile done and the plants that came up for this fire sign of Aries were all woodsy, earthy, and calming no surprise, but happy to see a list of plants I wasn’t familiar with. Actually, I’m always stunned to see the amount of beneficial plants out there in the world, including what we think of as weeds, actually being helpful.
Sharon’s Personal Terpene Needs After placing my hand on a sensor, and waiting a few minutes, the following plants were suggested for my own personal terpene needs:
Profiling Terpenes How do we know what beneficial plants speak to us? What fragrances are you drawn to? Are you partial to lavender for calm? Perhaps you enjoy rosemary or citrus for a lift? Rhae brought in a Terpene Bioscan meter to the shop to see just what terpene profile clients might be needing. “In order to make a personalized essential oil for our clients, this machine has been helpful and surprising,” Rhae shared. “Some of the plants are not common
Black Spruce: Mentally, spruce oil in general is said to aid in meditation. With my ADD and the challenge to concentrate, I need all the help I can get in meditation. Cannabis with THC has helped me in this way since I was 16. The physical benefits of black spruce include bronchial help, calming inflammation, soothing sore muscles and
immune support - the same benefits many healing plants have. Petitgrain: The benefits of Petitgrain seem too good to be true, but so do the myriad benefits of cannabis. Topping the list seems to be a stress reducer - which I always need, and why I’ve used chamomile for years to combat anxiety. It seems that Petitgrain addresses the central nervous system.
treating diabetes - as well as offering cholesterol dropping benefits. I do have a sweet tooth, though I have never presented with diabetic symptoms, I’ve always wondered. Perhaps this suggestion is a precursor?
It’s also an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiseptic, and helps insomnia.
Siberian Fir: Fir is part of the extensive pine family - related to the pinene terpene, the terp with the evergreen fragrance. Said to reduce stress, it’s also said to support respiratory health, and due to its high amount of the camphene terpene, eases sore throats and open airways. Lemon Eucalyptus: The terpene limonene, found in citrus, has always spoken to me. And while this type of eucalyptus isn’t in the citrus family, the terpene is the same, with the same lemon fragrance. Boasting of a number of health benefits, it boosts the immune system, offers prevention for respiratory infections, prevents disease, relieves pain, soothes inflammation, heals wounds, and improves digestive issues, to name just a few. As a bonus, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) approved eucalyptus oil in general as an effective ingredient in repelling mosquitoes, with a study showing a formulation of 32 percent lemon eucalyptus oil providing more than 95 percent protection against mosquitoes for three hours. Cassia: A member of the cinnamon family, cassia is said to be stronger and hotter, while also helping with menopausal symptoms and menstrual problems (ironically, mosquito repellant is also listed). I’m menopausal for sure, so this is a curious pick. Ceylon cinnamon is more commonly used, cassia is said to have citrus overtones - again, the limonene terpene in the mix. Cinnamon overall has also been found to lower blood sugar levels,
In summation, I’m always fascinated with the cross-over benefits of all plants, but most impressive is the amount of terpenes and compounds found in cannabis that mirror so many plants. A common thread within the plants listed for me is the ability to deal with stress, and why I use chamomile concentrate every single day. Being on deadline for more than 20 years now has worn down my central nervous system. Prior to discovering chamomile concentrate I ate valium like candy. Another common thread with the plants suggested is bronchial and respiratory support. This is fascinating to me, as I’m a flower burner and am greatly affected by the carbon I’ve taken in over the years. Seems as if this profile recognized the issue, leading me to believe there just might be something to this technology. No wonder people say cannabis is too good to be true, because it does so much. But then, so many plants help humans with so many ailments and disorders. It really doesn’t matter where you are geographically, there are plants all around you there to help. All you need to do is identify them. Look them up and match up what they offer with what ails you - you might be surprised. Let's Talk How Cannabis Affects The Human Body, Brain & Organs
BY: TEE "CANNA" MORENO @CANNAPSYCHMD
>>>>>
We have some understanding of what cannabis does for our bodies that is beneficial. Most of our understanding is based on anecdotal evidence that is still yet to be scientifically proven. As we know, federal laws restrict us here in the United States to study the cannabis plant with human studies at a realistic attitude. The cannabis provided for studies is provided by the University of Mississippi, which is not nearly comparable to the quality that you may find at your local dispensary. Rather, they use cannabis that is provided by the U.S. Government (via Ole Miss), which our culture commonly refers to as ‘shwag’. We have some general understanding in addition to our personal beliefs of what cannabis does for us individually. However, many scientists in the U.S., such as myself and my colleagues are amping up to propose cannabis research on human studies. There are currently a few Universities and independent companies that are studying cannabis but not all of them have permission on human studies- which we find unreliable as we are far more complex beings in comparison to a mouse. We are limited
60
with rodent research, we cannot cover all of the bases we need when it comes to this miraculous, intricate plant. What we do know at this moment is that cannabis has many beneficial components that assist us. Yet we don’t fully know, in clarity, the negative effects that it has on our bodies. Aside from the risk of dependence (in long-term consumers), we understand that there may be some cardiovascular risks involved too. So, I figured it was only right that I dig in to provide a basic understanding of the potential negative effects long-term cannabis use has on our body, brain, and organs in full transparency. Keep in mind, some of these studies that this conversation derives from have been held on lab mice, and some on humans. One of the most fascinating things about cannabis as medicine is that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) could potentially connect brain activity of physical health and disease. That is what makes me so geeked up about researching cannabis in depth! Cannabis has tremendous potential to change the future of medicine. Now, when it comes to inhalation vs. ingestion administration of cannabis, there is a ‘teeter totter’ of positive and negative effects. For instance, there is some concern when it comes to synthetic cannabis pills (made by pharmaceutical companies), as some individuals prefer ‘puffing’ vs ‘swallowing.’ One factor of concern is lethality. It is possible to totally overdose by swallowing too many pharmaceutical gradeTHC pills at once, whereas, research evidence shows that death from smoking cannabis at high concentrations/dosages does not exist. Let me explain why… pills enter the digestive system’s organs and are broken down into the bloodstream. As most of us know from experience, it can take up to an hour, sometimes 2 hours to even feel
the effects. Whereas, it takes only 20-30 seconds for inhaled THC to reach the brain, and is felt within a few minutes (Alger). For most individuals, immediate effects/ relief is preferred. Especially for those who suffer from chronic pain. The majority of cannabis consumers are seeking immediate relief. The downside of smoking cannabis is the potential damage that it has internally in our lungs, among other organs of the body. There are many other complications of various organs that have been reported by heavy cannabis users. Such as arterial disease-inflammation of the arteries that damages blood vessel walls and reduces blood flow to organs (Desbois). As well as critical limb ischemia (CLI), which is a severe blockage in the arteries of the limbs (Martin-Blondel). Many reports suggest vasculopathy (diseases affecting blood vessels) may possibly be contracted mainly by males that are habitual smokers (Subramaniam). There isn’t sufficient evidence to identify cannabis arteritis as a diagnostic entity. Due to the many factors that suggest that the majority of the cases were linked to tobacco smoking, the number of years of cannabis consumption, as well as the years of tobacco smoking. Basically, the consumption of both cannabis and tobacco combined appeared to be an aggravating factor in arteritis amongst young adults (Cottencin). Some tobacco smokers believe that cannabis is just as hazardous to the lungs as tobacco is. When in fact, this study proves that smoking both cannabis and tobacco simultaneously, is of serious concern. I’m sure you have all heard the conversation of cannabis being synthesized by pharmaceutical companies. The US government prefers to make these forms of cannabis legal, over the natural plant source. There are Synthetic Cannabinoids that are being
created and researched by several universities around the world, funded by pharmaceutical companies/ private research groups. The one I’m discussing specifically is being held at the University of Foggia in Italy. Which is researching “Pharmacological and Toxicological Effects of Phytocannabinoids and Recreational Synthetic Cannabinoids: Increasing Risk of Public Health.” Which is being held by the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences. In this study, they are discovering just how harmful synthetic cannabinoids are to the human body. As most of us know, there have been herbs sprayed with synthetic cannabinoids (CBs) sold all over the world that are aimed to mimic the euphoric effects associated with cannabis. They are sold under many names, but more commonly known as Spice and K2, just to name a few. These are listed as schedule 1 classification by the US Government. Research shows that synthetic CBs are extremely harmful to the human body, in fact, they’re toxic. The studies held by this group of 5 researchers shows that there are many adverse effects of the toxicity including cardiovascular effects (leading to stroke), renal damage (kidney), brain damage (psychosis, hallucinations, anxiety, agitation, convulsions, paranoia), respiratory depression (hypoventilation), and hyperemesis syndrome (Bukke). In recent weeks, 2 people have died and 41 have been hospitalized due to smoking ‘spice’ in Tampa Bay, Florida. One of the hospitalized, Mary (age 52), is a medical marijuana patient who was hospitalized on December 6th, 2021. She decided to buy spice since it was a cheaper ‘alternative,’ as she couldn’t afford to shop at her local dispensary in December. She reported that right after she smoked the ‘spice,’ she immediately felt stomach pain and her abdomen became inflamed and protruded,
appearing as if she was pregnant. The inflammation was followed by bleeding in various areas of her body. She could have lost her life if she hadn’t gone to the emergency room. Tests found traces of rat poison, which is why there have been reports of bleeding from the body in areas such as the nose, gastrointestinal tract, teeth/gums, and even black stool, and 1 of the fatalities shows that the patient had bleeding in the brain (Arradondo). In addition to these issues that are occurring due to the lack of affordable cannabis in legalized states, the U.S. Federal Government has rocked the pharmaceutical world for the past year, holding Purdue Pharma accountable for the 500,000 lives that the opioid crisis has taken the past two decades (United;Komfield). On December 17, 2021, the U.S. Judge tossed out the $4.5 billion deal shielding the Sackler family (owners of Purdue pharma) responsibility from opioid lawsuits (Pierson). The reason that I bring up this concern is that there is great speculation that the cannabis industry is heading in the direction of big pharma operations. As you have heard in recent news, Pfizer is now making their mark in the cannabis industry. Meaning, we need to work together stronger than ever in our cannabis community, as we have a hell of a battle to fight in the near future. There should be an immense concern within cannabis companies in town that are well aware of their malpractice. There will be consequences in the near future for the actions of today. If there is failed testing, destroy it, don’t use the failed flower on another product. Money is not more important than life. Consumers and medical patients demand transparency and integrity in the products that we consume. Every person shopping in a dispensary is trusting that the products that they consume are safe. Another
concern is that, we do not yet know the ailments that high amounts of ‘reintroduced’ terpenes will cause on us in the years to come. There is a lot that is yet to be discovered with the science of cannabis and the human body, brain, and organs. Besides the health effects of cannabis use, right now as a community we need to focus more on community and safe access of cannabis for medical patients. We also should work on joining forces to get taxes reduced to make it more feasible for cannabis users to purchase from legal dispensaries instead of the black market. In addition, we need to hold companies and laboratories that are not abiding proper practices, state regulations, and procedures on tested cannabis products accountable. I believe that we should take a step back as a community, and refocus our energy and input on these matters that are of immediate concern. Instead of worrying about consumption lounges that are just going to make the already rich, richer. We have other crucial, dire issues at hand that need to be dealt with prior to expanding lounges for consumption. We don’t even have the full research to prove cannabis’ efficacy, we just have anecdotal evidence that needs to be proven. I don’t mind consuming in the currently legal permitted areas and taking that risk for the time being, rather than have malpractice in our industry. For those of us who choose cannabis as an alternative to pharmaceuticals, we demand transparency. It’s time for change! ART 2 ART TUNA TARTARE
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a phenomenal holiday season as I have been traveling a bit myself. I hope you all enjoyed the time with your friends and family. This month, I am creating a dish that was truly ‘art inspired’. I had the opportunity to make sushi for a fine art gallery on Wilshire Blvd. in L.A., The Art 2 Art District Gallery. So, I’m dedicating this month’s article to all the artists out there. Keep chasing your dreams, stroke by stroke. Never give up! Because one day you could literally wake up in the loft of a fine art gallery saying to yourself, “Wow, is this really real? What an accolade.” Sometimes life gives us a gift and it blows our own minds. I know it does for me. New Year, New Mindset. Now, let’s blow some smoke and create a dish that will blow your friends minds! Some artists have different canvases!

2 Carrots 2 Tomatoes 1 Yellow Onion 1 Pineapple 2 Lemons and Limes Sriracha/Soy Sauce Tajin DIRECTIONS First, grab your fruits and veggies. Make sure you wash them off with cold water as this helps reduce any foodborne illness by over 50%. Stay safe stoner’s and stonette’s! Start by dicing all your onions, cucumbers, carrots, avocados, and pineapple. You can totally cheat here using diced pineapple in the can (just cut them into smaller pieces). Place them all in separate containers for later. Grab your lemons and limes. Cut in half longways from end to end. Place them on the flat side and slice them in as many thin slices as you can. Put in a container for later. Now take out your tuna from the fridge and wrap it with a paper towel for just a minute to get any liquids off of it. Cut into ½ x ½ inch size dice. Place into a large bowl. Now let’s get to the fun stuff and try in 10 steps! Add your infused sesame oil to the bowl of tuna. 3oz of Soy Sauce, add your CityTrees Blue Agave tincture (4 droppers worth), half of your veggies, some Tajin and finally a couple squirts of Sriracha. Mix this well and gently. Domo Arigatou Tomodachi!!
‘fire’ on the plate as well. Place in the fridge for an hour after you see a good tuna to veggie ratio. This helps let everything incorporate and marry. Making sure to stir before and after the hour. Everything needs to be cold. PLATING- grab a cool plate and a large measuring cup. Scoop the mixture and fill that bad boy up! Squeeze out any excess liquids and this also helps retain the shape of your tartare. Flip over onto the plate and lift off gently. Step 10- Can we do it? (Well they don’t call me CAN’Tabushi). Grab your lemon and lime slices. Place them around the tartare like in the picture. Place a single drop of Sriracha on the lemons and then place a dollop of your pineapple mix by the limes…Holy Spicoli YOU DID IT! You did that in ten steps and just made a piece of Art! I hope this inspires you to do more in the kitchen. You should have enough to make more than one. Remember the sauce is infused so don’t let it go to waste, you can use it for so much more. Have fun with flavors- cut up some raw shrimp and add some lemon, orange and lime juice to make a nice ceviche’. The juice actually cooks it for you! Science! I hope you all enjoy this as much as I have enjoyed creating it for you. Chef Chris Rodarte aka CannaBushi Chris is a five star Sushi Chef.
