Medical Cannabis & Cancer: Chemical Culprits

The spider web-like mass found in my right breast the summer of 2012 had me thinking about my mom, the farm she was raised on, DDT, Rachel Carson, and cannabis - in that order.
This type of cancer begins in the milkproducing glands of the breasts or lobules, affecting 10 to 15 percent of all women in the U.S. It’s a mass, not a lump, as with Ductal Carcinoma, affecting up to 85 percent of women in this country, annually.

I saw the configuration while proactively peeking over the shoulder of both the mammogram and ultra-sound technician. While waiting for the biopsy I decided to do some research and easily found an image of a nearly identical mass on the Mayo Clinic’s website, naming it, “Lobular Carcinoma.”
Pass the Mayo
This information can be found in the Mayo Clinic’s tedious, page-by-page listing of incredibly limited information, with the only cause listed as hormone replacement. This stumps me as my sister – who is 18 months older – had this same type of cancer just two years prior, undergoing surgery, chemo and radiation with no hormone replacement ever used prior. Surgeries are invasive, chemotherapy does more harm than good, radiation is now known to cause secondary cancers, such as lymphomas, and the FDA is actually considering taking it off the market for this reason. In my mind, being proactive about one’s health is equal to being able to see past the smoke screens of modern day medicine. Being a cannabis patient, I am skeptical of traditional treatments that

seem to do more harm than good.
Once Upon a Time
My mom grew up on a farm in Illinois just outside the State Capitol of Springfield. Yes, Springfield. Kind of like The Simpson’s - the difference being, my mom told childhood stories of dancing with my aunt and uncle beneath the rain of DDT falling down from crop dusting airplanes on the waving fields of grain. None of them grew a third eye, but all died of cancers. Before my aunt passed, she phoned me up, urging me to look into the pesticides used on the farm. At the time I was dealing with my own daughter’s auto-immune disorders, having been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia at age 13. I was also just diagnosed with Thyroid Disease – another disorder under the auto-immune spectrum – but I never connected the dots to the family’s ailments. I am second generation DDT, my daughter is third. This means something, as we have a lineage of chemicals in our genetic bloodlines, with many other toxins and heavy metals literally showered on us for decades. Recent studies indicate that DDT alone stays in the genetic blood lines of lab rats up to five generations that they know of, with cancers in our stem cells, and with chemo and radiation only scratching the surface. American biologist Rachel Carson spoke out on the dangers of DDT when the compound was first found to have insecticidal properties in 1939, then marketed to the masses. While the chemical successfully eliminated the mosquitos causing the Malaria – gracing it with the tag, “savior of mankind,” Carson ousted its dark side. Published in 1962, “Silent Spring” was
Medical Carson’s warning, hitting the newsstands long after the non-water-soluble poison had saturated our soil, water and ultimately our food supply for decades. In the book that should be considered mandatory reading today, Carson warns of cancers and worse, describing how DDT attacks the central nervous system of its prey – paralyzing and rendering them defenseless until their immune system fails and each organ stops functioning as they suffocate and die. Those familiar with neurological, autoimmune, or central nervous system disorders leading to physical debilitation, such as Parkinson’s, ALS, or Alzheimer’s just got a chill. For that matter, most of our modern day ailments stem from some kind of toxic poisoning from the chemicals or heavy metals surrounding us daily. Cancers are a given, but heart disease and the myth of high cholesterol has recently been discussed publically by many cardiologists who insist that every heart they’ve ever opened up was inflamed and infected, leading them to the conclusion it’s not for lack of blood flow, it’s diseased, plain and simple.
to move forward with our own self-care with cannabis. My doctor was unaware of its advantages before I presented my findings to her. How could she have been aware? We learned together as I did away with cancer, pain, and eight prescription meds. We can’t stop the toxins around us, but we can educate ourselves and others to this good medicine – one person, one plant at a time. Carson’s book caused the removal of DDT from U.S. markets, spawning the environmental movement, and forcing the U.S. to implement the Clean Air & Water Acts of 1973 and 1974, respectively. But the damage was done and today we are suffering the dire consequences with our ill-fated health. The good news is, as listed in U.S. Patent No. 6,630,507 B1, “Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties … useful in the treatment of a wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases … (with) particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limited neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and IIIV dementia.” The information on the patent is crucial, as it provides us with the knowledge we need

Next, I would like to congratulate your boyfriend on his excellent choice of women. Nothing says love like trying to shut someone up by being right. Unfortunately, in this case you’ll have to humble yourself and find some respect for the torch. Different waxes are used at predetermined temperatures which is why Enails are becoming so popular. For example, shatter is best around 600 degrees while crumble smokes better at 700-750 degrees but this is more of a personal preference as all waxes will begin to melt at 375 degrees. If you have an Enail you can set the temp and walk away but if you are using the old rig method you’ll need the torch to get your nail red hot. A regular lighter doesn’t have the capacity to get the nail hot enough to dab. However, if you are smoking regular flower you can add it into the joint or dip it in wax and use a regular lighter to spark it up. If you really want to shut your man up, I would run out and buy him a nice, top shelf, kick ass torch with a warranty. Nothing will quiet him down like some fresh hot dabs.

Our current prison system is beyond broken. It’s full of things like mandatory minimums and three strike laws. Where’s the rehabilitation, where’s the fix? For the month of July, we would like to remind you that this Father’s Day many men and women are behind bars for our plant. Each person highlighted here is a father, a mother, a brother, a sister, and perhaps has a son or daughter who they will not be able to spend time with for the holiday. We would like to highlight Thomas Landreth, a lifelong petty criminal, who was offered a plea deal of 20 years in prison or the opportunity go to trial in front of a jury of his peers to face the possibility of life behind bars for possession of a couple grams of marijuana in a joint. A mandatory minimum is not a fix, especially when it can put a man behind bars for 20 years for weed. A man whose biggest crime is being a shitty criminal with multiple petty crimes. Thomas was caught with a couple grams of weed and given no choice because of his petty crimes. Twenty years for weed or life after a trial, either way you’re going to get buried in a system only to eventually die and to never be thought of again. Thank you judicial prison system, for being a band-aid not a cure.

Since his incarceration, Thomas has seen the deterioration of cellmates who have since passed on, leaving him the impression that he could die before his release also. You see, Thomas has many health conditions and let’s face it, prisoners are on no one’s priority, especially small time criminals who really want to do better. Thomas is just a poor American who was treated badly as a youth and never taught to make grown up decisions, which lead to a life of on and off petty crime. He is currently behind bars for 20 years thanks to a plea deal. At a time that he was trying to turn his life around, Thomas has instead become just another number behind bars, which means that he may be denied health-care for his brain tumor and PTSD stemming from a rape while behind bars. If Thomas Landreth didn’t have a loving daughter who believes in her father on the outside, he would just be another cog in the judicial wheel.

For Jason Endicott, facing charges in the state of Texas is his personal Alamo.
Thomas is a prime example of why there is a drug war, to keep lower income and the least educated under control, the epitome of cheap labor for the prison system, just another number in a privatized system. He’s dying slowly in a system not meant to make the person better but to put the unruly kids in a corner so the rest don’t have to hear them. Thomas Landreth is not a killer but a ‘piller’, and that means he’s more of a danger to himself than the rest of the world. The Thomas Landreth’s of the system, whether they’re black, white, brown, or yellow are the grease in the machine of rich people who own the companies that keep them “safe”

The Endicott family was moving from the Pacific Northwest to Florida late in October of 2013. The couple report, that Jason’s wife Tiffany was pulled over due to having Oregon license plates and speeding 3 miles over the limit. The officer requested to search the vehicle but Tiffany refused to consent. Police brought in a canine to do an open-air search and claimed the dog made a positive hit, which compelled Jason to consent to the search for fear the scene could get worse for his family. Police seized approximately 4 pounds of medicine and Jason was processed and released within a few hours. Now Jason faces the fight of his life. Pretrial is scheduled for July 20th and located at 100 N. Bridge Street in Henrietta, Texas. Any amount of prison time could be a death sentence for Jason due to his poor health. Court support is humbly requested. Jason is an Oregonian and needs all the help from the kind hearted people of Texas he can get. The physical presence of supporters in the courtroom is an impactful way to show government officials what the will of the people really is.
Kansas Shona Banda According to many published reports, Finney County Attorney Susan Richmeier announced that five criminal charges are in the process of being filed against mother of two Shona Banda as a result of the well-publicized raid by Garden City police in April. The charges include distribution or possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of school property, endangering a child, unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance, and two drug paraphernalia infractions. The Garden City Telegram notes that Shona is facing between 138 and 204 months of incarceration. Shona plans to turn herself in

Washington Josh Mauk and Debbie Brechler Last month we reported that Josh and Debbie’s trial would begin in July. In an effort to present the best defense, their attorney is requesting the case be continued until November 16. Although this is good news, Debbie says, “It sucks not being able to medicate (due to a ‘no intoxication’ order) during this time. We have to call in every night to find out if we have to do a UA the next day, but it is better than the alternative!” On a positive note, the prosecutor has dropped the recommended sentences from 30-41 months down to 18 months. Any amount of time in prison for a plant is unacceptable.

Las Vegas Fredrica Ballard
Fredrica has been fighting for her rights to consume cannabis medicinally for many years and is no stranger to the judicial system. In 2013, Fredrica was faced with her most recent tangle with officers who encountered Fredrica while resting in the passenger seat of her parked car. They retrieved her and her family’s state approved cannabis in the vehicle. Fredrica’s family includes five licensed patients, yet Fredrica was the only one charged. She was accused of possession with intent to sell, and possession of a controlled substance. Fredrica was arrested and held for two weeks, during which time her health was severely affected. After a hard battle and with a good attorney by her side, Fredrica has now settled her case. Ultimately, she has accepted a misdemeanor charge of possession of a dangerous drug not for interstate commerce, through a non-plea submittal. All Fredrica must do is perform 100 hours of community service and keep her nose clean for six months, then all charges will be dismissed and her record sealed. Bet It All on Green Legislation Affecting Nevada Patients By: Jason Sturtsman
Assembly Bill 70 (AB70), Senate Bill (SB 447), and Senate Bill (SB 276) were passed and will be effective July 1, 2015. The three bills were mostly spearheaded through the Nevada legislature by Senators Richard “Tick” Segerblom and Patricia Farley. Each bill will be reviewed here individually, but of most concern to medical marijuana patients is the right to continue to cultivate marijuana until 2018, a new law making cannabis concentrates illegal and new policies being developed for children under the age of 10 in need of medical cannabis. SB 447 was largely constructed by the law enforcement lobby, starting with the regulation of concentrated cannabis. It is now a Category C felony to make cannabis concentrates, except as a duly registered MME under NRS 453A. In addition, medical marijuana is not permitted on public or school property.
If a person is arrested and a decision is made not to prosecute, a dismissal of charges issued, or there is an acquittal of charges pertaining to a person’s use of medical marijuana, a law enforcement agency shall return medical marijuana that was seized. It sets a good precedent that medication is returned, but do you really want your medicine back after it has sat for six months to one year in storage? (At least you can look forward to high CBN in the medicine to help you get to sleep after the THC has degraded.) Section 36 permits a law enforcement agency to stop its employees from using medical marijuana in the workplace. I doubt it will mean the end of hazard pay for officers using cannabis as part of their undercover narcotics operations - just in case I have a few law enforcement readers who are concerned. SB 447 also removes the requirement for the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to issue medical marijuana registry cards and opens up the possibility that the Division of Public and Behavioral Health (Division) may issue the cards themselves. The Nevada Department of Agriculture now enters the cannabis industry with the removal of prosecution for their participation and they must issue a list of pesticides allowed to be used on cannabis. Section 35 within SB 447 asks the Division to develop procedures for the issuance of letters of approval to children under the age of ten to receive cannabis as medicine. Fortunately in the near future, we will now be able to help the multitude of medical refugees from our neighboring states without medical marijuana programs or access to

safe medicine that need help for their children. Medical Marijuana Establishments (MMEs) can relocate freely within a jurisdiction and can transport cannabis between MMEs or from one building to another. MMEs can also hire transportation companies to take cannabis from one operation to another. Section 36.3 of SB 447 extends the “grandfathering” of patients who were growing their own medicine and the recognition of nonresident medical marijuana patients to March 31st, 2018. The Initiative Petition (IP1) in 2016, will give every Nevadan over the age of twenty-one the right to cultivate 6 plants, so please smoke the vote in 2016, to extend the right to cultivate to every Nevadan. SB 276 will allow the creation of more medical marijuana dispensaries, increasing more patient access. It also allows for the full transferability of the license, allowing for more money to be invested into the Nevada cannabis industry, helping patients have the most state-of-the-art facilities. AB 70 allows for the Department of Taxation to collect the marijuana excise tax, benefiting the state of Nevada, increasing the public’s support for the cannabis industry in Nevada. Always seek counsel from an attorney to provide further clarification to any of these new laws and how they may affect you before you bet it all on green. Tokin’ With the Infamous
This month, I am tokin’ with the infamous Meen Green, a bona fide legend in the world of weed, and personal friend for almost twenty years. As I always say, “A friend in weed, is a friend indeed!” This dude is as real as real gets. He is also the hardest working man in the grow business. Between touring with Real One, writing and recording, creating and hosting multiple cannabis events, being a full fledged ganjapreneur, and basically building an empire from the ground up, this man is so busy, you never know what city or state he’s gonna be in. We realized that catching up in person wasn’t going to happen, so we chopped it up in a Skype Sesh. Hopper: Yo Green! How you doin’ brother? MG: Pretty good, pretty good. Holdin’ things together. Hopper: You’re a busy man, it’s hard to keep up with you these days…That’s why we’re doing this Skype Sesh. Speaking of that, so what’s that you’re smoking on right now? Looks bomb! MG: Right now…man. Man! Ahhhahahahaaaaa! I’ve got this Green Crack Shatter that I got from my folks in Arizona. Hopper: Nice! MG: Yeah, it is…and then I just actually got a fresh delivery and I’m smokin’ on some of this good Bubba Kush from NorCal. Hopper: Love the Bubba Kush.
MG: Man! That taste, bro! I’m gonna go ahead and roll up a blunt while we chop it up… Hopper: Nice, nice. I’m all about the Gorilla Glue #4 right now. Let me get this Sour bong re-loaded and some snaps lined up before we go any further. We go way back, I’d say almost twenty years. You remember how we met? It was through Shea from Seedless, right? MG: It was about 1999 when we met at a Kottonmouth Kings
concert in San Diego. Shea, (the owner of Seedless Clothing) came and picked me up in LA and brought me to the concert personally. It was my first time being introduced to the Kottonmouth Kings, SRH, and all that. He took me backstage, and that’s where I met you. It was crazy because they were shooting a video that night, I can’t remember the name of that album, but I ended up on the inside of the album cover! The picture is floating around somewhere, of me, Shea, Daddy X, and D-Loc. This was before any of them had tattoos. No sleeves, no neck tats. And then you see my black ass! That night I met you, it was such a trip, that’s when you were their road manager. Shea sponsored me for my music, I met him in ’98. Anywhere I’d go, Cypress Hill Smokeout, anywhere I’d perform, he’d give me boxes of clothes so if I was in a magazine or whatever, I was always reppin’ Seedless. He sponsored me all the way up until 2006, and then he hired me to work for him at Seedless and I did cold call sales. I moved to San Diego and lived in OB for five years, but that’s another story. The night after we met back in 1999, the next morning I went and got Seedless tatted on my stomach. Then we ended up going to a Snoop Dog concert the next day. I still actually do outside sales for Seedless to this day. Hopper: You’re a legend in the weed world, no doubt. For those few who don’t know, tell everyone who you are, what you do- basically, who is Meen Green? MG: To start, I’ve been calling myself Meen Green from back when I was street hustlin’, basically back before the “pot cards” and the “recommendations”, when it was just regular stoners. I have been putting out weed music since about 1991. The first song I put out was on a compilation with a dude named Danny Holloway, who was the VP of Island records for like 20 years. That’s how I got my break in the game. We were the industry “weed men”. There were three of us. One of my boys, Ganjah K, who hosted the Cali Cup. Ganjah K is a friend of mine. I actually went to kindergarten with him. He is the reason I rap about weed.

It’s crazy where we came from, as kids. It was him and another partner of mine, his name is Quinton. Quinton was famous because the group The Pharcyde said in an interlude on their first album, “Quinton’s on his way, Quinton’s on his way, Quinton’s on his way, with another J…and it’s okay”. Hopper: Yeah, I think I remember that.
MG: Yeah, we were real industry “weed men”. At the time, we were behind the scenes bringing the bud to the studio. That’s how we all got in the game. Hopper: Let’s talk about what you have going now. Big things are happening- We’ve got the San Diego Cali Cup coming up quick on July 10th. MG: Yes sir, we do! Hopper: Can’t wait for that! It’s gonna be epic. MG: Man, I cannot wait. I’m sittin’ here answering questions- notification after notification- while we’re sitting here talking! Getting email after email, everybody wants to know how to get in on the Cali Cup. It’s gonna be a good time. Hopper: How about that little private ‘Hotel Cup’ we had last time we were in Vegas? MG: Haha! Right, oh yeah, wow….man. Hopper: I came with Big Mo from Dirt Brothers Seeds, and also brought some Mr. Beez, and some GLC- their Gorilla Glue #4. We had like 17 flavors that we previewed for the SD Cali Cup, and that was just from three people! MG: Man, people don’t even get to sample stuff like this on the regular. That was some real weed. Everything you submitted was old school, real weed. Hopper: You know I’ll never bring anything but the crème de la crème, top shelf only! MG: It’s crazy bro, you know what I’m saying, you know how it is out here… Hopper: You also have Meen Green’s Mansion II Puffin N Paradise party coming up on July 22nd. It’s the second one you’ve done in Vegas, tell us what that’s all about. MG: The first one was pretty successful, it was at the first CHAMPS of the year. We’re pushing the line and going for it again. Hopper: What else do you have going this summer? I know you’re busy, always working on something, you’ve always been like that. As long as I have known you, Green, you’ve been the busiest, most multi-tasking beast in the game. MG: You know me! Me and Real One right now are on the Kings
of Hemp Hop Tour. The third leg of the tour actually starts up on the 1st. I’ll be going to LA, my boy is having a nice little listening party at Amoeba Records. Yeah, I’ll be there in Daygo and we’ll be getting ready for the bikini contest and the SD 7/10 Cali Cup. DA: What is Hurt Life? Can you fill us in on the movement? AS: Hurt Life Skateboards is passion, and knowing the battle of not giving in and not giving up. For me, my passion is skateboarding, the best blessing and the biggest curse skateboarders know all too well. It’ll destroy you physically, mentally and emotionally. But at the same time, just being on your board cures you, and brings a feeling of pleasure like nothing else can. And Hurt Life skateboards is the outlet we want people to connect with, even if it’s just visually. I feel it speaks to the people that get it. THAT’S THE DEEP VERSION but overall it’s just raw, alluring, and the graphics visually grab you. DA: Fill us in on the early years of your pro career, what was it like to be one of the early pros coming out of Las Vegas? AS: Actually there is a list of pros before me. I was part of the new youth coming up when I turned pro. Quick history of real Vegas legends to me includes Kenny Anderson, Mike Chu, Ryan Fabry, Rick Jaramillo, Joe Nemeth and Chad Muska who lived here for a bit. I can honestly say that they all helped me in one way or another. Thanks Mates! DA: What made you slide that ledge with no shoes on? AS: I did it with shoes first, but it felt so natural that it was kind of easy. I figured I could try something else but didn’t really have another trick in mind. So it came down to me wanting to at least punish myself in some weird way, so I went barefoot and at the time I was trying to get a cover for a magazine I was doing an interview for. I didn’t have a shoe sponsor at the time and felt it unnecessary to promote a shoe especially if it was a cover shot. All in all it worked out, I felt a little abused from doing it and the photo came out amazing. It was for an article about the selfdestruction skateboarders put themselves through. David Broach shot it and put a fantastic story together with me and a few other psychopaths … haha DA: Those early pig wheels and black label movie parts were legendary. Rumor is you might be dropping a new part soon? AS: That’s what I’ve been hearing too … haha. I’m mentally prepared I think to jump back in. But I’m not trying to outdo anyone or myself. Those parts I filmed were what I liked to do, the way I wanted to do it. And that’s the mind fuck I get when people expect something from me. So my advice is just sit back, watch and either know I enjoyed filming it, or be disappointed while comparing it to things that I’ve done in the past. I just want to put a

AS: I don’t have insurance and that’s the problem. I’ve had injuries before that I could just ace bandage and ice. But this one I’m going through now is fucked. It’s a Hydrocele, which is pretty much a swelling of your scrotum and balls. It’s like a water balloon half the size of an orange on the left side of my ball sack. They have to surgically remove it. It’s super uncomfortable and awkward for me to even push on my board let alone jump down stuff. Sucks. Mentally, it puts me in a damper because it’s hard not to think about 24/7. If I could find a strain that works for what I need it for, I would partake. I am all for the legalization of it, it’s our right and I will smoke to that. trafficking because the new law appears to have very low per se trafficking amount. It appears 4 grams of concentrated cannabis will trigger a category B felony. However, what amount of marijuana infused products the Division permits is unknown. Until further guidance is provided by the Division or Nevada legislature it would be wise not to possess any concentrated cannabis after July 1, 2015.

Upon arrival, and once properly fitted in a white lab coat and protective eye glasses, I was ready for the tour. The lab, comprised of just a few testing rooms, is designed with antimicrobial walls and a clean

Upon arriving at the lab, product is checked in, weighed and photographed. 3. Testing begins with a Foreign Matter Inspection to identify things such as bud rot, grey mold and spider mites. 4. Next is a Moisture Content Analysis – ideal range is 6-9%. 5. Product then goes through a Microbial Screening which detects microorganisms such as Salmonella, Alternaria and Botrytis.

7. Next is the Heavy Metal Screening which identifies metals such as Arsenic, Lead and Mercury. Heavy metals do not metabolize, they accumulate in the body and can cause neurological disorders. 8. For extracts only, the next test is a Solvent Residue Analysis. This test shows the amount of residual solvents in extracts such as Acetone, Butane, Naptha and Hexane. Ingesting extracts that contain residual solvents can lead to cancer, liver and kidney damage, reproductive damage, respiratory impairment and toxicity to the nervous system. 9. The last screening is a Mycotoxin Screening which tests for molds such as Aflatoxin and Ochratoxin. Mold inhalation can cause fever, diarrhea, respiratory problems, vomiting and/ or rash. 10. Once the screenings are complete, product goes through Potency Testing and a Cannabinoid and Terpene Analysis is done. The reports generated from these tests will allow dispensaries to inform patients of strains higher or lower in certain cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. 11. Lastly, a final check is done and reviewed by a lab manager. DIgiPath completes testing with a 48hour turn around. Product that passes all facets of the testing process is issued a DigiPath Certificate of Analysis and is ready to be sold by local dispensaries. If a sample fails the microbial testing, then the Medical Marijuana Establishment has the opportunity to convert it in to an extract (high pressure extraction will eliminate the bacteria) and have it re-tested. If a sample fails the Pesticide Residue Analysis, the Medical Marijuana Establishment must immediately arrange with the Division of Public Health to destroy the crop. All failed testing results are directly reported
to the State of Nevada’s Division of Public Health. With the high standards and requirements for medical cannabis testing in Nevada, and with no cultivation facilities ready to submit product, my concern was the initial testing of product grown by patients. According to DigiPath, “Because the first round of useable cannabis to be sold in Nevada dispensaries will likely come from patient growers in the state, we foresee that there could potentially be a high failure rate. Unfortunately patients who have been home-growers were not made aware of the state’s stringent quality testing guidelines; therefore this could potentially result in a higher failure rate. Once more cultivators are up and running that will change.” This issue could mean an even longer wait for dispensary openings.

Chameleon Glass Challenge Typhoon vs. Tootsie Roll

When you walk into a smoke shop looking to purchase a new hand pipe, the choice can be tough. There are so many different types to choose from and most of us tend to go for the most eye appealing. Some people inspect the bowl to ensure the quality meets our standards but we never get to actually try the piece before we purchase. Recently, a reader wrote in to ask which piece would be a better buy the Chameleon Glass Typhoon or the Tootsie Roll, so I did what any good researcher would do and orchestrated a challenge.
Typhoon: This cone shaped piece was off putting at first, but once you hit this beautifully crafted hand pipe you fall in love instantly. It fits perfectly in your hand due to the placement of the carb, draws nice smooth hits, and then there’s the spinning smoke. Oh, that spin. Tootsie Roll: An eye pleasing design with a long chamber that hits like no other piece I’ve ever used. This one also fits perfectly in your hand and is a great alternative to the cone shape, and did I mention the spin?
For this head-to-head challenge, I recruited 5 people to help me determine which piece was the best in the following categories: Bowl size; Draw Power; Handling; Taste; Appearance; and finally, Visual Effect.
the user from seeing the bowl so we had to tip it down a bit to light it, no big deal. The hit was incredibly smooth (I swear it had a cool taste) and the effects were almost instant. As we moved onto the Tootsie Roll we found the same results. A nice cool draw, excellent smoke spin, and perfect hand placement but we didn’t have to tip the bowl for this one. The taste was exactly the same in both since they are made of the same glass and designed the same way. The appearance category was also a wash as 2 of us liked one piece better and the other 3 liked both. As we approached the final category we realized we hadn’t even started playing with the spin which the biggest selling point. Hit after hit we were able to create large slow spins and small, tighter spins, what a cool party trick! It seems as if the Typhoon had a better spin than the TR but after several attempts we were able to control our spin with the TR much easier (the Typhoon just looks cooler). They are both quality pieces. The final results showed 2 people choosing the Typhoon as their favorite due to the smoke spin, 2 choosing the Tootsie Roll based on design, and 1 person who just couldn’t decide.
As we started the challenge, we noticed a few key details. Both of the hand crafted designs with air directors give the user the ability to draw a long hit or smaller deeper hits. The carb is located directly opposite the mouth piece making the chamber a breeze to clear as it allows us to take the exact hit we want. The bowl size is exactly the same in both pieces and holds exactly the same amount of flower. With the bowl size and draw power being exactly the same, we called these categories a draw and moved forward.
It is impossible to choose an actual winner since both pipes are made the same, have the same draw, and spin the same. My best advice is to choose the one that would be the most appealing to you as they are both the perfect hand pipe. It would be unfair to not mention how impressed I was with the superior customer service skills at Chameleon Glass. Ken goes above and beyond to ensure that each customer is satisfied, a true ethical business. Hats off sir. Happy medicating and enjoy the show!

Tips for Summertime Cultivation By: Chris Egan
Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed that it’s warmed up a little. It’s summertime in Las Vegas, and for growers this can be especially difficult. Every year about this time, I get bombarded with questions from patients about dealing with the issues of summertime cultivation in Las Vegas. With practice, I’ve been able to effectively combat many of these issues that arise due to our sometimes extreme climate. Without a doubt, the largest obstacle you’re going to be dealing with this time of year is the heat. Excessive heat can wreck a crop and even kill an entire garden. Even mildly high temperatures in a grow room can negatively affect your plants ability to flourish (especially during flowering). Despite the fact that cannabis grows naturally throughout the world in a variety of different climates, it actually has preferences for its ideal environment. Remember, as medicinal cannabis growers, we are trying to grow the very best cannabis we can. To accomplish this, we must cater to our plants’ desire for their ideal conditions. Fortunately for
us, our plants’ preferences are not unlike our own. Cannabis’ most ideal conditions are between 70˚F-80˚F. Humidity levels are a matter of preference, but try to keep humidity between 30%-45% when possible. These ideal conditions may seem simple to maintain, but in the summertime climate of Vegas it’s more difficult than we might expect. There are also several things in a grow room that contribute to your battle with high temperatures. By far, the largest contributor to increased grow room temperature is the grow lights. Even just one 1000W grow light in a standard 10 x 10 room will raise the temperature enough to make it noticeable. Light ballasts also put off heat. If using multiple lights with multiple ballasts, it might be wise to remove the ballasts from the garden when possible. Remember also that keeping your grow lights off during peak heat hours (12noon-9pm) not only cuts down on heat, but also cuts down on your energy consumption during those expensive peak hours. Decreasing the heat output from your lights and ballasts will make it easier to keep your garden in the ideal temp range. But just reducing the heat generated is not enough. There are several other simple things that can be done to help keep those garden temps down and our plants happy. One of the major ways to combat high temps in a garden is ventilation. In any garden and especially when using multiple large grow lights, standard air-conditioning alone will not be able to keep your garden within your ideal temperature range. Air conditioning only cools the air-it does not remove hot air. Ventilation removes the excess hot air from the garden. Connecting your light fixtures to ventilation and ducting is the most effective way to deal with this and efficiently remove heat from your garden. A large number of growers choose inline duct fans, since they are quieter than many other types of fans. Whatever ventilation system you choose, always have the air moving in your garden. Cool air should be introduced, blown around the garden and then ventilated out as it warms up. Hot air from your grow room should be exhausted out to an attic or elsewhere. If this isn’t sufficient for your garden, be open to adding additional ventilation. Even small inexpensive fans and flexible ducting can have major effects.

Another often overlooked factor when it comes to temperature of your garden is the location. Grow rooms with an exterior wall that faces south or west are often warmer than other parts of the same building. Although exterior walls by code must be insulated, this alone is often not enough, especially when using multiple large grow lights. These rooms can get up to 10° warmer than the rest of the same building, even with the AC on. A simple fix for this is to add another layer of temporary insulation to the interior of the walls on top of the drywall. This will cut down on the ambient heat these rooms are subject to. If you’re growing in a building with an attic, don’t forget to check that it has adequate insulation above your grow room. A good chunk of the heating and cooling losses in most residential homes is due to insufficient insulation in the attic. The plants in your garden are not the only thing that can be negatively affected by the heat. Many growers use grow systems like hydro buckets, flood and drain or NFT (Nutrient Film Technique). These systems typically have large nutrient reservoirs. A reservoir can heat up in a warm garden, making your plants susceptible to things like root rot. Luckily, a warm reservoir is an easy fix. It can be as simple as purchasing a reservoir chiller from your local hydro shop or even rotating freezer packs (the type you put in coolers) into your reservoir. Freezer packs are a cheap and a safe way of cooling stuff down. They cool down the reservoir and are food safe! Another issue in warmer gardens is that the high temperature can also cause more evaporation out of the nutrient reservoir. Check your reservoirs more often so plants are not running dry! There are many ways to deal with high temperatures in a garden. Always start by trying to recognize what’s creating the highest amounts of heat, then deal with it accordingly. For this recipe you will need: • coffee maker • ice trays • pitcher • ziplock bags • kitchen mallet/rolling pin Your Happy Ingredients: • Mary Milk • Oreo Cookies • Coffee Mary Milk Ingredients: • 1 cup of milk • 1/8th finely ground cannabis Method for making Mary Milk: First, you must grind your 1/8th of cannabis in your handy dandy coffee grinder. Next pour your milk in a saucepan and heat until it comes to a simmer. When it begins to slightly bubble begin to stir in the cannabis slowly, lower heat and allow it to simmer for about an hour. Keep a watch n it as milk can easily over flow if there is to much heat so stir frequently. After the hour is up, let the milk cool down for about a good 45 minutes. Once cool, bra your cheese cloth and strain the milk into an air tight container of your choice (Happy Chef prefers jars) and store. Canna Cookies Iced Coffee: First, crush up the cookies and then line the bottoms of the ice trays with the Oreo crumbs. Fill the tray with your Mary Milk, and then freeze it overnight. Oaksterdam University Returns to Las Vegas By: Dr. Aseem Sappal
Welcomed back to Las Vegas, was Oaksterdam University, as we returned for a second time to conduct our basic and advanced classic seminars. Oaksterdam University would like to take a moment to thank all of the groups and individuals that assisted and supported us as we put on our seminar and a job fair. To recap our event, Oaksterdam University put on a four day seminar that focused on the following topics: politics and history of cannabis, local, state, and federal law, patient rights, basic and advanced horticulture, extracts and concentrates, science of cannabis, topical applications and CBD, cooking with cannabis, economics, careers and opportunities, advocacy, patient relations (budtending), procurement and allocation, legal business structures, civics 102 (know your rights), dispensary operations, and business management. The classic seminar was held June 12th – June 15th at the Plaza Hotel & Casino. On June 14th we held a cannabis job fair that had over 600 attendees if not more. Numerous industry professionals spoke including Senator Tick Segerblom. The job fair was put together by Oaksterdam University and Oaksterdam University Alumni - Green Therapeutics, a local group of healthcare professionals that hold a licensed cultivation and production MME in North Las Vegas and unincorporated Clark County. We would also like to thank the alumni students that returned to attend both Las Vegas seminars. It is our alumni that continue to carry on our mission by raising standards, exercising best business practices and advocating for change. Our alumni are in fact the most active in the world, whether they are the first to pull permits, change the law, or simply raise awareness by replacing fiction with fact. Look for OU to return to Las Vegas sometime in the fall with our 4-day intensive horticulture seminar. In Oakland, we offer 14-week semester programs as well as seminars. Our fall semester enrollment is currently open but seats fill quickly. We look forward to our return to Las Vegas.
