Mandatory Masks As this issue is going to print, Nevadans receive Governor Sisolak's announcement that Phase 3 of our reopening will be delayed due to an increase in positive Covid 19 cases. This announcement comes just days after the press conference in which the Governor informed us that wearing masks in public is now mandatory. Hopefully, if the majority of Nevadans adhere to wearing masks, we will not see an increase in cases. And, whether you agree with the Governor or not, please keep in mind that another shutdown would not be good for anyone. There are currently many Nevadans out of work and still awaiting unemployment. Others have had the positions they were in eliminated with no hope of returning to work. And, many have returned to work with reduced hours because businesses are only able to operate at half capacity. And now, businesses who do not enforce Sisolak's mandatory mask requirement could face fines. Many of our essential workers have worn masks daily for the past few months, and for good reason. Please do your part to protect yourself and those around you. On a lighter note, this month is our annual coloring book issue. This issue typically takes place each April but the shutdown forced a delay. This time around, we have included some cool pages from local artists, pages from Trog, our friend and artist from down under and a two page Green Life spread from the artist who drew this awesome cover. Keep a look out on social media for our contest announcement - the amazing team at Green Life Productions will be giving away our favorite VCM strain to a few lucky contest winners! Enjoy the weather as Nevada warms up!

Life Productions >>> Green Growing for Nevada >>>By: Stephanie Shehan

Green Life Productions is known throughout Nevada for their high quality, Clean Green Certified cannabis. Steve and Kouanin Cantwell, along with their incredible team have developed a unique growing method. I recently had the chance to sit down with Steve to find out more about their cultivation and what they have coming up in the future. Stephanie Shehan: How did you get started in the industry? Take us through the evolution of Green Life Productions. Steve Cantwell: My wife and I started off as patients in Nevada’s medical marijuana program, with a legal 12 “ish” plant patient garden at home. As the commercial industry began to take off, my wife put together a business plan based on my “organic” growing style and I pitched it to Mike Floyd, a local business man, who’s family sponsored me as a troubled youth to pursue my MMA career. Mike put together a small group of local general contractors and together, with the help of some awesome people along the way we built GLP into a successful company! Stephanie: You have a unique growing method, tell us about that. Steve: We grow with “notill” living organic soil indoors under LED lights and are currently on our 21st cycle in the same soil undisturbed. In our system, we utilize the soil food web, a community of organisms that break down organic matter building healthy soil structure where various symbiotic relationships and predator prey interactions provide our plants with nutrients and protection from pest and disease. By consistently eliminating waste streams with our permanent soil beds, the reclamation of our dehumidifier water, an in-house composting system and efficient LED’s, we’ve always done our best to be conscious indoor farmers. Coupled with the elimination of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, plant growth regulators and the inclusion of organic amendments, cover crops, worms, composts and beneficial insect predators, the cannabis we produce speaks for itself. It is, without a doubt, that the vintage nature of the soil translates to a consumer product that is clearly differentiated in the market place. Stephanie: Green Life started strictly as a cultivation, have you since branched off into other things? Steve: Not just yet. COVID-19 slowed down our plans this year but we are still planning on hitting it hard once everything gets back to normal.

14

Stephanie: What sets you apart from other growers? Steve: We are a small locally established company dedicated to providing the highest quality products to Nevada. Being a small private company, owner operated & cash flow positive it gives us the freedom to make the right decisions that are best for this plant, our company and our community. Stephanie: Tell us about your Going Green Initiative and why it matters. Steve: We started off as a medical industry and took into consideration both the health of our patients and planet when building our company and brand. We feel the health of our planet is directly related to the health of its people, by taking a systems thinking approach we want to be part of the solution and not the bigger problem. Stephanie: You have a loyal and productive staff, anyone you want to mention? Steve: GLP is far from a one man show. It takes the hard work and dedication from many to achieve our goals! I’m thankful and blessed for everyone on the team. Stephanie: What do you have coming up in the future? Steve: We will be starting on our solventless hash line very soon and hopefully have it dialed in and dropping in the next couple months. Stephanie: Where do you see the Nevada cannabis industry five years from now? Steve: Five years from now, after the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, police brutality protests, presidential election and the upcoming alien invasion, the only thing for sure is people are gonna want quality cannabis more than ever and Nevada will still have GLP to count on. Stephanie: What about Green Life in five years? Steve: Hopefully partnered with Tesla growing weed on Mars! www.glpnv.com Facebook & Instagram: @greenlifeproductions

PLANTS FOR PAIN BY ALIXANDRA LAUB

With the current shift in conscious consumerism and people taking their health and well being into their own hands, many of us are looking back to our roots to find solutions. In the beginning, all medicine was derived from plants- then in the late 1980’s, just 85% (and today around 15%) of modern drugs are coming from the source. While medicine these days is rather effective at masking symptoms quickly, it is no surprise that oftentimes synthetic drugs come with undesirable health consequences. With the cannabis plant blazing the path to awareness of plants as viable medicine, attention is back on some of the plants that have healed us for thousands of years. Clinical research supports what we already felt to be truecannabis seems to ease pain both topically and internally. The future will provide more conclusive information about the best method of delivery, and the dose-response relationship as it relates to specific types of pain. Until then, self-experimentation is necessary. Researchers from the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that most participants preferred indica strains for pain, sleep, and sedation, while sativa was preferred for energy and mood. The musculoskeletal system consists of the muscles, joints, cartilage, and connective tissues. Inherently these areas are prone to pain and stiffness, overuse, strenuous physical activity,

18

injuries, chronic conditions, or from simple being a productive human! In fact, physical and mental stress is often the cause of the physical symptoms of tension, spasms, and pain. Removing the stressful stimuli and finding healthy coping mechanisms is the first step to relief. However, to combat pain multiple approaches should be made to find symptomatic relief including rest, relaxation, massage, and compression. Utilizing heat therapy to increase blood flow and muscle flexibility can be done by using a heat pack, or immersing in an herbal bath, hot spring, or sauna. Apply a CBD topical after using heat to enhance the benefits into the localized area. Inflammation is the body's response to stress, yet to reduce pain, inflammation must be reduced. Applying cold therapy via ice pack, or cryotherapy, should combat inflammation. Other ways to reduce pain and sensitivity is to remember the words of every gym teacher when they said “warm-up and stretch before aerobic activity”. This is crucial to reduce damage, pain, and stiffness even if athleticism is not involved. On that note, yoga and stretching are not just for the faint of heart, studies have shown significant benefits of yoga for active-duty soldiers and veterans, arguably the strongest and bravest of us all. In Switzerland, yoga has been integrated into veteran facilities where 82% of people have tried at least

one natural modality such as herbal medicine, yoga, acupuncture, etc. The major findings in many studies about yoga indicate a significant decrease in pain as well as depression and fatigue. Herbal medicine is the art and science of using herbs and natural modalities to enhance health and wellbeing. Take past and traditional medicine practices and apply them to modern-day science and this becomes the greatest time ever for understanding plants as medicine. Use teas, tinctures, topicals, essential oils, and combine them with all-natural lifestyle practices that balance the diet, herbs, vitamins and minerals, exercise, mind-body therapies. Drinking tea is probably the simplest and gentlest way to get started incorporating plant healing into your daily routine. If you are a cannabis user, if you already drink a lot of herbal tea, or if you have used essential oils, you have already experienced herbal medicine in some sense. Some easy plants to integrate belong to the mint family (Lamiaceae). The mint family is one of the largest and most distinguished families of flowering plants with over 3,500 species. Scientific research suggests that many Lamiaceae species have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, nervecalming, stress-reducing, tension-relaxing, crampreducing, and circulatory benefits; particularly useful for musculoskeletal pain.

Many of these species are useful for reducing pain discomfort, including commonly known lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), peppermint (Mentha piperita), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), and thyme (Thymus vulgaris). Though there are plenty of lesser-known herbs like horehound (Marrubium vulgare), motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora), and hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) have shown beneficial results in labs. The best way to use these herbs? Drink as teas, use as an essential oil, combine in a CBD topical application, enjoy in a bath or even infuse into meals. Herbs like black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) and Devil’s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) are useful for deep soreness, Kava (Piper methysticum) can be useful for spastic pain as well as anxiety, St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) and passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) can be useful for nerve pain. Arnica* (Arnica montana), yarrow (Achillea millefolium), cayenne (Capsicum annuum) and willow bark (Salix spp.) are well-established herbs used topically. Though they are not curative, these herbs are helpful. Beyond herbs, chiropractic care, acupressure, rehabilitation movements, and massage are commonly used to improve life-burdening pain. Topical CBD remedies

can be implemented with any holistic practices. Some people swear by electrostimulation and acupuncture when nerves are compromised. Relaxation-induced pain-relief can be experienced by using mind-body therapies such as meditation, breathwork, or through energy work like reiki and therapeutic touch. There are so many natural and inexpensive ways to teach the body how not to need any pharmaceutical medicine or intervention at all. *Arnica should only be used topically. Herbs and supplements should only be viewed as assistance. No matter what method you decide to integrate, make sure you put in a call to your doctor before starting any new health regimen. Therapy hardly ever consists of just one drug or procedure. To get the most out of any therapy, try a variety of approaches for at least a month then figure out what works for you and your situation. Also, this information is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Alixandra Laub M.S. is on a mission to connect people to plant medicine as an herbalist, wellness coach, essential oil distiller, and a manufacturer of topical herbal remedies. Cannabis and the Immune System: Cannabinoids, Terpenes and Maintaining Health

During this time of heightened health awareness, self-care vigilance and social safety, everyone is feeling a sense of intensity. Much of our current anxiety stems from concerns about health and wellness. Masks: on or off? Protests, rioting, politics, pandemic protocol, COVID-19, essentially working or ineffectually loafing- we are all in an alternate reality of mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical unrest. If there is anything that we know about the effects of stress on the body, we know that it’s an immune system destroyer. Daily media reports encourage us to double up on everything from vitamin D and C for cell regrowth and to keep viruses at bay, social media posts encourage the use of essential oils for relaxation and respiratory health and to adopt fitness routines (socially distanced) in order to stay healthy. Through all of the media messages, online articles, physicians reports and even the White House weighing in, how are we to make sense of this data

20

overload and, more importantly, how do we apply it to our own lives? Caring for the immune system isn’t a practice just to be implemented during a global pandemic. Consistently being mindful of our bodies and making sure that we are doing our par t to create a healthy, nutrient-rich and positively stimulated physiological framework means optimal results for our health at all times. Environmental factors, such as stress and pollution, can harm the immune system, making cell repair and renewal difficult under any circumstances. However, cannabis consumers rejoice! In addition to elevating our spirits, our beloved plant can also provide a plethora of other health benefits, including positive stimulation of the immune system. Cannabinoids can impact the immune network by directly targeting inflammation, disease and promoting

cell repair while working directly with the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is made up of neuroreceptors which process the chemical elements in cannabis and help to regulate the immune system. Individual cannabinoids work to stimulate the body’s natural defense against disease. The cannabis plant is made up of a variety of chemical elements which play an important role in the support of the body’s natural resistance. Devoted readers are familiar with our many previous editorial spotlights dedicated to beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes and how they contribute to health and wellness. These elements of the cannabis plant are what promote healing and better health and, in turn, a flourishing immune systema process better known as “the entourage effect” (cannabinoids, terpenes and other aspects of the cannabis plant working better when used in conjunction with one another). Let’s revisit a few of the most commonly occurring and widely known cannabinoids and beneficial terpenes, and how they impact our health and immune response:

Cannabinoids

THC (TETRAHYDROCANNABINOL) THC binds itself to the CB1 receptors in the brain, releasing dopamine, which leads to the feelings of euphoria and relaxation. Contains more anti-inflammatory potency than regular aspirin. CBD (CANNABIDIOL) Increases the level of endocannabinoids within the body, interacts with opioid receptors and dopamine receptors. Useful in combating inflammation, anxiety, mood, insomnia, pain and more.

CBG (CANNABIGEROL) Neuroprotective, fights inflammation, nausea, slows cancer cell grow th, widely used in therapies to treat autoimmune disorders, Crohn’s disease, cancer, IBS, chronic pain and insomnia. CBN (CANNABINOL) Effective sedative combating chronic insomnia, pain reliever, anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, helps stimulate appetite in cancer patients. CBC (CANNABICHROMENE) Effectively used in treatment of skin ailments and disorders. Encourages new cell grow th, works effectively with other cannabinoids (entourage effect), anti-viral, anti- depressant, anti-proliferative, effective in treating migraines.

Terpenes

MYRCENE Antibiotic, analgesic, antiinflammatory properties, mild sedative. Anti-catabolic effects, slows arthritis progression. Likely the most abundant terpene found in cannabis. PINENE Strains which contain pine-rich flavor profile and natural scent. Beneficial for the lungs, brain function also well known for having anti-cancer properties. Analgesic, antibacterial, prevents oxidation of molecules in the body. LIMONENE Limonene works to help reduce the feelings of anxiety that lead to stress. It assists the body in fighting cancer and other diseases. Limonene is a mood lifter and excellent for fighting depression and promoting an overall feeling of happiness and wellbeing. LINALOOL Antimicrobial. Sedative, works with the body to promote relaxation. Excellent anti-epileptic terpene.

Combats depression and anxiety. Promotes stress resilience in the immune system. Muscles relaxant, therapeutic treatment for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. As we strive to incorporate the beneficial use of cannabis into our health regimens, it’s important to know how best to select the appropriate varieties. One of the most common misconceptions regarding recreational and medical cannabis is that strains are best chosen based on their stimulative effects (indica, sativa or hybrid). While it’s certainly helpful to be aware of these profile categories, the ideal way to select which strains are best suited for your particular needs is to reference their terpene and cannabinoid properties. Check lab test results, consult with your budtender regarding your health concerns and expectations and be sure to research which strains are in line with the effects you are seeking. A stronger familiarity with cannabis and its many attributes means more specific results and greater opportunities to improve health and immune system function.

PIZZA STONE’D TO THE RESCUE >>>>>>>

By Shwa Laytart

Maddie Saglibene is a Cannabis Superhero

“We launched a program to help provide meals for frontline workers and right away got support from friends in the cannabis industry to make it happen.” Maddie Saglibene Las Vegas’ NORML Co-Founder and Executive Director, Maddie Saglibene has not only been feeding the minds of cannabis users with information, she’s also been feeding their bodies with fresh slices.

life personality. Mikel was the driving force behind me starting Las Vegas NORML as soon as I got

Launched in 2019, Pizza Stone’d is Saglibene’s food truck, equipped with a custom built-in stone oven from which handmade pizzas, strombolis, calzones, come flying out of- as well as, baked bacon, jalapeno, or veggie mac-n-cheese that’s to die for! SHWA: Maddie, you've been busy during the quarantine. First, tell us what you have been up to with your food truck, Pizza Stone'd? MADDIE: I think the saying goes, "idle hands are the devil's playground!" (LOL!!) This has obviously been a really stressful time for everyone, so I've just been trying to deliver as many smiles as possible with pizza! We launched a program to help provide meals for frontline workers and right away got support from friends in the cannabis industry to make it happen. Our good friend Ashley Ciliberti from NVCann Labs actually came up with the idea to feed police officers alongside NORML and right away the local department was very accepting! When we showed up that day, we caaaasually snuck in questions about cannabis. What types of arrests were they making? Is public consumption a problem? We were really excited about their responses, because they were honestly so much more accepting than we even knew. Public perception is that cops are vehemently opposed, but time and time again they acknowledged that alcohol was the real problem. Opening up the conversation with pizza made it a little easier I have to admit. Move over, donuts. SHWA: There have been some big updates with LV-NORML, but first, you recently lost your NORML mentor, Mikel Weisser. Can you tell us a little about Mikel and how you two worked together? MADDIE: Mikel was a true gift to the cannabis movement that I had the pleasure of meeting in Phoenix back in 2016. I wasn't an activist at that time, just a pot smoker with passion. I watched and listened to Mikel from across the room when I first was introduced, and he honestly felt like a celebrity to me. As longtime Executive Director of Arizona NORML, he was so well spoken yet had such a unique demeanor that you couldn't help but to feel his larger than

24

back to Vegas that year and, Mikel never stopped being my mentor. I was honored to be awarded Activist of the Year by National NORML in 2019, and Mikel was the first person I called to tell. That day, he stood in the crowd like a proud father, taking my picture and cheering. I will never forget the wisdom he shared with me or his contagious laughter. SHWA: Big things are happening with LV NORML right now, give us the lowdown. MADDIE: Mikel would have been so proud. These past few weeks have been so huge for Las Vegas NORML because we have been working on a new program. The Las Vegas NORML Giving Tree Fund has been started to help provide relief to the Nevada cannabis community, including displaced cannabis industry workers and registered patients. We received an initial $25,000 donation from the Tuttleman Foundation, which as many may know is David Tuttleman CEO and Founder of Matrix. There is strict eligibility criteria and supporting documentation will be required, but we are

going to be awarding 100 people $250 checks as relief during this tough time. As cannabis advocates, it's been painful to see the struggle that patients and displaced workers have been going through. Federal law excludes cannabis businesses from relief packages, putting them in detrimental positions even though the cannabis industry employs more workers than the coal industry, and pays more in taxes. Larger and better funded businesses may be able to get through tough times, but without economic stimulus to small businesses through federal action, many won’t survive. This could only worsen the rapid corporatization of the cannabis industry in a way that is inconsistent with the values that many of us have within this space, so NORML is working hard at the federal level to work on these issues. A note from David Tuttleman: "Community involvement has always been a priority for me. There is nothing I revel in more than meeting new people and learning about their stories. As the cannabis community has also been impacted with the COVID-19 pandemic, I knew now more than ever, I could offer my support." SHWA: What's the schedule for Pizza Stone'd and how can people get a slice of the action? MADDIE: Booking for 2020! We offer a really great catering option for cultivations, productions or anyone else in the industry looking to create good morale with their employees. We pop up, thank everyone for their hard work making our industry go, and feed em’ pizza. I love it! Pizzastonedlv.com has a booking form. I always offer the best deals to industry...! MANAGING ATTORNEY, CALLISTER LAW GROUP

The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers

Welcome back avid readers! It’s been a wild few months since the great COVID-19 shutdown of 2020 stopped the presses and prevented any new issues from blessing the magazine racks. While this magazine and many other businesses were effectively forced to shut down, thankfully Governor Sisolak deemed marijuana dispensaries “essential businesses” and allowed them to remain open the entirety of the shutdown for delivery and curbside pickup. I can’t even imagine the frenzy and chaos that would have occurred had marijuana establishments not been deemed “essential.” Many people rely on cannabis to relieve them of everyday aches, pains, and stresses. And for others, cannabis consumption is a nice way to just relax and enjoy the passing of time. It would have been madness if cannabis wasn’t readily available during the shutdown. So props to Sisolak for lookin’ out! While I’m on the topic of the shutdown, I hope everyone has been doing their part as far as social distancing and maskwearing goes. Now that Nevada (and the country for that matter) has opened back up for business, it’s even more important than ever to take these simple precautions. Don’t get too close to one another. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Please. Let’s try to stop the spread and avoid any possibilities of another breakout or shutdown. Thankfully, in the event there is another shutdown (and even if there isn’t), it’s nice to see dispensaries offering more delivery and pickup options now. Buying weed has never been so easy, convenient, and legal! And speaking of legal, Governor Sisolak recently helped push cannabis reform ahead with a move that has MAJOR legal ramifications for anyone out there with certain state (Nevada) criminal convictions for marijuana possession. In June, Governor Sisolak – who is a member of the Nevada State Board of Pardons Commissioners along with Attorney General Aaron Ford and the Nevada Supreme Court Justices – proposed a resolution that would unconditionally pardon anyone convicted in Nevada state courts of misdemeanor possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. On June 17, 2020, the Board unanimously approved the resolution - setting the stage to pardon over 15,000 people that have been convicted of such a charge. Of course, in order to take advantage of the pardon you do need to apply for it, but the Board has established an expedited process and has made it pretty simple to apply. You just need to collect the old judgment/conviction information and paperwork and submit it with a one-page application to the Pardons Board. They will process the paperwork, verify the

26

information, and BOOM – you are pardoned. There is no fee and you can even have multiple convictions pardoned! However, there is one large hole here – prior to 2001, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana was a felony and wasn’t really differentiated between possession of other Schedule I drugs. Because of this, there is a segment of the population that can’t really take advantage of this resolution. That being said, if you fall into this category of having a felony possession charge, it is still possible to obtain a pardon, just not via the expedited process the Board has set up. Also, be advised, even after you have received a pardon, that doesn’t mean your prior conviction is removed from your criminal records – it’s NOT! While being pardoned does allow you to truthfully answer “no” to job applications asking if you have ever been convicted of a marijuana crime, the arrest, criminal records, etc. all still exist! But fear not! There is a way to get rid of all of those pesky marijuana arrest records and court records for good! In Nevada, you can petition the court to “seal” your arrest/court records if you qualify. The sealing process can be a bit frustrating and time-consuming, but it’s definitely worth it in order to truly rid yourself of old marijuana charges. There is still a ton of work to do on cannabis reform, but these masspardons are a major step in the right direction. Now we just need to shore it up a little bit to make sure everyone that has been wronged by cannabis enforcement has the same ability to rid themselves of the injustice. And speaking of injustice… Many of you know that my passion in life – other than my family and cannabis – is fighting for individuals’ civil rights and suing police officers and police departments when they act above the law. Police brutality and discrimination by the police must stop. People have tried to deny its existence for years, but it cannot be ignored any longer. Thankfully the State of Nevada recently passed a law requiring police officers to wear (and activate) bodycams while on duty. Between the bodycams, woke citizens filming these outrageous actions, and brave individuals taking a stand and fighting for what is right, hopefully the barrels of bad apples and the whole damn rotten apple tree will be uprooted. #StayWoke #BlackLivesMatter #EndQualifiedImmunity Follow me: cannab-esq.com G: @Cannab_Esq | FB: @MitchellSBissonEsq

DOSING >>>>>>>>> CBD AN INTERVIEW WITH Sunil Pai, MD This article provides a deep dive interview with a licensed clinical practitioner regarding the importance of proper dosing to derive maximum wellness benefits from hemp extracts—specifically those intended to deliver cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG). Sunil Pai, MD is an internationally recognized expert in integrative medicine based in New Mexico and author of the critically acclaimed 2016 book An Inflammation Nation. He is a lecturer and a contributing author to medical textbooks and scientific journals. Pai is a practicing doctor who combines an evidencebased approach with 20 years of clinical experience. Each year, he educates thousands of physicians and medical professionals about the nuanced biochemistry involved in the administration of hemp-derived cannabinoids and terpenes for the treatment of a variety of disease states and conditions. Curt Robbins: Dr. Pai, thank you for joining me and Vegas Cannabis Magazine. Why is dosing so important for gaining the maximum benefit from broad-spectrum hemp extracts containing CBD? Sunil Pai: Dosing is ultimately the key factor that provides the positive and anticipated response from broad-spectrum hemp extracts. Unfortunately, dosing is misunderstood by many health providers and patients. Both have been conditioned from their experiences with pharmaceuticals, which are single-agent ingredients with single-receptor targets, that there’s always a dose response curve. CR: Let’s talk more about hemp’s lack of a dose response curve and the implications of the herb’s aberration from this physiological mechanism. SP: Most wellness practitioners and consumers are acclimated to a dynamic equating higher doses with a greater response. However, with CBD and terpenes from hemp oil, it is actually the opposite! Peer-reviewed research defines—and clinical experience demonstrates—that the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system are more in an ‘active state’ when there is greater tissue damage, dysfunction, or imbalance. Versus the ‘resting state’ that characterizes healthy tissues. Thus, when a person experiences a health issue, CBD receptors become more active and smaller doses of CBD are needed to stimulate them. Their stimulation turns on a cascade of reactions that support inflammatory and immune repairing mechanisms. Most health providers are not recommending CBD dosing appropriately to achieve maximum benefit. Providers and patients are taking larger doses than they need and, therefore, missing what I call the ‘sweet spot’ of having these receptors activate optimally.

Think of a key that’s necessary to open a door. Only a small, gentle turn of the lock is required to open the door and enter the house. A bulldozer isn’t required to knock down the door and surrounding wall! More CBD is simply not always better. Often, less is best for many patients. Also, improvements from CBD are better when it is consumed more frequently throughout the day, versus a larger dose once per day. CR: What is the process involved when a consumer and their wellness practitioner try to properly dose a phytocannabinoid such as CBD or CBG? SP: Start low and go slow’ is the approach that works best. I recommend beginning with a low potency tincture and taking 1/4-1/2 dropper sublingually. Do this three times a day and again at bedtime. Start at this dose for at least seven days. If benefits are not observed, the daily dose should be increased by 1/4 dropper. Again, stay at this dose for about seven days. The consumer should maintain a journal of their symptoms and any potential side effects experienced. After the user feels that they have achieved a noticeable improvement in their symptoms, they should go one dose higher. If they notice a reduction in benefits or an increase in negative side effects, they should return to the previous dose. This is how we find the CBD dosing sweet spot. One of the most important aspects for the wellness practitioner is to encourage the consumer to be patient during this process. Understandably, many doctors and patients are excited to use broad-spectrum CBD from hemp oil in anticipation of positive results. Unfortunately, this often involves them starting with larger single doses per day in an attempt to achieve immediate results. I recommend starting with tinctures first, due to quicker onset and control of dosing. If a consumer ends up taking more than one dropper per dose, after they finish the bottle I’ll recommend a higher potency bottle. This is easier for them to consume and is a more cost-effective approach in the long run. CR: Subjective efficacy is a big concern of wellness professionals. What if a patient experiences issues when beginning consumption of a tincture? What other options are available? SP: If a consumer is at a higher dose of a tincture and experiences issues, I may switch them to softgels. Softgels directly help with GI conditions. But to achieve maximum benefits, for both tinctures or softgels, the practitioner should recommend a whole food plant-based diet involving anti-inflammatory foods, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and fiber. This supports the

microbiome to help ensure proper utilization and bioavailability of CBD. CR: Many wellness practitioners claim that dosing is a moving target. How often does a consumer need to ‘recalibrate’ their daily doses of a hemp extract to ensure maximum bioavailability and overall efficacy? SP: Just as with all medications and dietary supplements, their absorption, assimilation, and excretion is affected by the state of health of the individual. Important factors such as the microbiome, liver function, and the consumer's immune function—including overall inflammatory conditions—will affect their dosing over time. To reduce potential problems, sublingual tinctures of CBDrich broad-spectrum hemp extract provide more immediate absorption. Compare this to softgels, which require about 45 minutes for onset to occur. Another tip: When taking a tincture sublingually, do not swallow for about 45 seconds and do not eat for about 15 minutes. This maximizes absorption and contact of the CBD hemp oil with mucosal membranes for best bioavailability. Consumers may need to adjust their dosing of hemp extract if they experience changes to their symptoms or their health, such as weight loss or gain, GI issues like colitis, gastritis, and fatty liver. Again, if the consumer notices that they are not obtaining the benefits of using CBD as they did previously, I would recommend that they restart at a lower dose and titrate upward, versus increasing from their current dose.” CR: In your clinical practice, what have you noticed when consumers experience a dose that is too high or too low? SP: In cases of dosing that is too strong, consumers do not get the full benefits. If they take too low a dose, they may experience no benefits whatsoever. A common side advantage is greater relaxation and better sleep. The inflammation of the patient may be improved, but not as much as we would like. This is one reason that increasing dosing slowly, over time, is key. Also, too low a dose is preferable than too high a dose. Again, consumers must increase dosing slowly to find the titration that works optimally for them and their particular physiology and health level. It is very subjective. When consumers take too high a dose, they may feel tired. Thus, they may perceive that they need to increase their dose to feel something positive. But too high a dose, with most consumers, means they have overshot the sweet spot and are missing the full benefits. Most who take high doses usually do so only one time a day, often at bedtime. They typically report better sleep, but their overall symptoms don’t change much. Why? Because CBD from hemp oil works better with smaller, more frequent doses. This maximizes

bioavailability. That’s really the takeaway: Smaller, more frequent doses of CBD and hemp extracts are best. CR: Is tolerance building a characteristic of CBD and other cannabinoids in broad-spectrum hemp extracts, such as can be the case with THC? SP: Tolerance building can be an issue with full-spectrum CBD extracts, which contain a maximum of 0.3% THC. This is especially true for sensitive consumers or those with metabolic conditions, including methylation and other health issues, such as fatty liver. Because broad-spectrum products contain no THC, tolerance is not an issue. Again, this goes counter to the model to which doctors and patients are habituated, which is tolerance building and addiction to common medications, including pain meds like NSAIDs and opioids. CBD dosing is more about the consumer's state of health. As their health improves, CBD receptors ’turn down’ and assume the resting state. At this point, more CBD might be needed for the user to experience benefits. However, to the contrary, when users experience severe health issues, CBD receptors assume an active state. When receptors are active, smaller doses of this cannabinoid are needed to gain maximum benefits. Dear Mary Jane: So what’s new? How can a world which was already insane manage to get even worse? Are you able to maintain your happy thoughts? Do you have any techniques which you would like to share? Going Psycho in Northern Nevada

My Dearest Psycho: Happy thoughts, indeed! What, a little quarantine and a planetary pandemic are enough to put you off of your game, Nancy-boy? The rules and laws of our previously-accepted reality being broken hither, thither and yon have left you feeling a little out of sorts? Staying locked in your home or apartment for two months has made you less than excited about getting out of bed in the morning? For what it is worth, I definitely hear you. I have been chagrined to discover that I was pretty much made for quarantine; in fact, I have been training for it for my entire life and had no idea that I was doing it. Lucky me? Perhaps there is an advantage to being antisocial after all. There is nothing like spending extended time alone to teach you about yourself. For example, I have learned that I am not easily bored. I have previously confessed to my love of fucking with people for no real reason, and the quarantine has put a bit of a damper on that. Back when I was young, prank phone calls were always quite popular: “May I speak to Mr. Hertz, please? Mr. Richard Hertz? His friends call him Dick”. The all-powerful cellular phone cabal put an end to that when they decided it would be appropriate for people receiving calls to see the number of the person calling them. The hell! A close second to that activity is trolling people online, but that is really getting played out. Social media means that people who were experts on global politics and whatnot are also now experts on cellular genetics and microbiology. And here I thought that they were unemployed because they were stupid! Pro tip: they are stupid. Stupid people love to trumpet their ignorance as far and as wide as possible. Think of them like bumblebees, except instead of collecting pollen they are spreading bullshit. One area that I did get to explore during our enforced quarantine was the concept of microdosing marijuana. Previously, I would do my standard wake-and-bake, followed by another hit a few hours later, and then trying to space it out every four or five hours. In the words of watermelon-smashing

comedian Gallagher: eventually, you’re not going to get any higher so you are just wasting weed. My favorite smoking implement is what the kids back in the day used to refer to as a one-hitter. As such, the one-hit is my standard unit of measure of consumption. Ultimately, over the course of an 18 hour day, I would consume 5 to 6 one-hits, perhaps 2 1/2 to 3 g worth total. In the interest of Science, I modified my dosing schedule. Instead, I first dosed with 1/2 of a hit hourly, and ultimately decreased to 1/4 of a hit hourly. The product that I used was 24% THC, with minimal CBD. I was an N (study size) of one, so you will have to take my results with a grain of salt. This is what I learned- 1/2 of a hit hourly was way, way too much. I mean, I didn’t go all “Reefer Madness” playing a trumpet with my ass or anything along those lines. However, by noon or so, after an 8 AM start, I was quite baked. Baked is good, make no mistake, but from what I’ve read about microdosing, this was not the experience that I was looking for. So, modifying my rigorous testing protocol, I then started using 1/4 of a hit per hour. Given that my goal was to maintain a nice, even buzz all day long, I realized that this dosage was still a bit too much. Finally, I adjusted to a quarter hit every 90 minutes and found it to be my optimal dosing schedule. It gave me a nice buzz with no crash. One issue that I did notice was that, after a while, I kind of forgot that I was high. It’s hard to explain, but I came to realize that the advantage to my original schedule was that I would get a nice buzz, calm down, and then get elevated again a few hours later. I told you that I was easily amused, right? I also came up with my own version of what drug users call a speedball, in that I would take a laxative pill and an Imodium anti-diarrheal pill at the same time, and be grateful for the fact that I couldn’t stray far from home. This experiment provided absolutely no valid scientific data, and I will never speak of it again. Mask up!

TALES FROM THE CRIP

Welcome to Normal So. What’s new? Have you gotten your hair cut or bought toilet paper lately? WHAT. THE. HELL. Six months ago, I was using this column space to create musical playlists, movie lists and book lists all addressing the theme of the impending World War III.

Forgive my rage. My biggest point of curiosity is not how things will look a month from now, but how they will look a year from now. Will we all still be wearing masks? Will there be a vaccine for Covid?

Three months ago, I was using this column space for pretty much nothing, due to the Covid quarantine that basically shut everything in the United States right the hell down, notably the dispensaries where this publication is distributed. Talk about the unkindest cut of all… The human being is very likely the most resilient creature on this planet. We come back, is what we do, regardless of whatever obstacle may be placed in front of us. Some of you reading this are likely too young to remember, but the United States showed a surge of patriotism after the terrorist attacks on 9/11 on a level previously unheard of, at least since World War II. Of course, it also emphasized the dark side which dwells deep within many of us. For example, it wasn’t until after 9/11 that members of the Muslim faith were considered to be inherently evil. “French fries” were renamed “freedom fries” in an attempt to mock the white-flag-making French, who bailed on the war on terror early on in the proceedings. As if we needed another reason to make fun of France. In fact, the only country who deserves to have fun made of it more than France is probably Canada; if you have read this column before, you will know of my intrinsic dislike of all things Canadian. Imagine my discomfiture if Canada ever attacked us! I am not sure exactly what a Canadian terrorist attack would look like, but I am guessing that it would include a great deal of maple syrup. Forgive my rage. My biggest point of curiosity is not how things will look a month from now, but how they will look a year from now. Will we all still be wearing masks? Will there be a vaccine for Covid? I am convinced that traditional education as we know it has disrupted forever. Do you know one thing that really impressed me during this entire quarantine? How quickly and more-or-less effectively schools transition from a brick-and-mortar operation to an online environment. As I have stated in the past, I know many teachers; for that matter my wife is a teacher. It made me laugh my ass off to read Tweets and such from parents who had to teach their own children and realized exactly how tough the

job of teaching is. One group for whom I fear the handwriting is on the wall is the folks who were laid off from work and labeled non-essential personnel. In the post-Covid world, there is a premium on staying away from other people. How is that going to work in a restaurant? How about in a casino? Movie theaters might as well start closing up now, thanks to the plethora of streaming media outlets available at home, where you are MUCH less likely to be exposed to the Covid virus. It is my guess that anybody who can be replaced by some form of technology will probably be out of work within the next few years or so. Evolve or die, I guess. This will be a good time for schools, training programs and food delivery services. Amazon and other online shopping services will bury a knife in retail. Online learning is already the next big thing; think individualized YouTube lessons. My biggest prediction: marijuana delivery services will reign supreme. Adaptability is the secret to success in our brave new world. Regardless of job, if it cannot be modified to Covid-friendly standards, you can probably kiss that sucker goodbye. Change is good. Perhaps not for those who have change foisted upon them, but if you don’t have an eye towards the future, then you are already behind the curve. Stay healthy! REMEDY Deadhead OG

I can’t say that I’m a Deadhead, I was more into The Doors. But I’m always a fan of a sativa-dominant strain and Remedy’s Deadhead OG is just that. A combo of Chemdawg 91 and SFV OG Kush, these dense buds will have your brain rippling. A floaty, go-with-it vibe with plenty of energy so you can dance with your grandma and those colorful dancing bears till the sun comes up. With close to 32% THC, you just might find yourself wandering- but you’ll never find yourself lost. This is definitely a festival bud, even if the festival in 2020 is only in your head.

TRYKE Dutch Treat Haze Live Resin Badder

Tryke is without a doubt one of my favorite Nevada cannabis companies. Their Dutch Treat Haze Live Resin Badder (say that three times fast without stumbling) is one of my favorite products. This badder is straight-up full flavor! I can’t think of a badder with so many terpenes. But, to be honest, after dabbing this resin, I can’t think of much. I have a feeling we will get to the point when all the flower is pressed into live resin. If anyone could start this trend, it’s Tryke. I could go on and on about this Dutch Treat Haze Live Resin Badder, but let my nap speak volumes for me.

Now, this is the future of medicine. EPC CBD/THC Tincture should be prescribed to everyone over the age of 60. These tinctures help with everything from stress, anxiety, inflammation, digestion, and boredom. If you have an elder in your family that isn’t crazy about smoking but wants to be part of the cannabis movement, and more importantly, needs a little less pain in their life, then pick up one of these EPC CBD/THC Tinctures and help them break on through to the other side. However, you don’t have to be a boomer to enjoy these drops from heaven. EPC doesn’t age discriminant, so get yourself one too!

I’m still mystified by the marketing team over at Green Growth Brands that came up with the name CAMP. Those who have been in the industry from the start know that CAMP stands for the Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, a multi-agency law enforcement task force in California to eradicate cannabis. But that’s what happens when we don’t know our history folks. With that said, CAMP’S Cookie Punch is an Indica-dominant hybrid with an earthy, fruity flavor and pleasantly potent high. The growers over at CAMP definitely know what they’re doing and I’m going to be returning to CAMP to repurchase this sweet strain.

The Source Turbo is a combination of internal vacuum generation and heat delivery specifically tuned for low temperature ethanol evaporation incorporating. An outer containment serves triple-duty as a vacuum chamber, cold trap, and collection vessel controlled by a system that is so technologically advanced, that operation requires only the push of a single green button. Finally, you can’t forget the app- these days if there isn’t an app for it, it doesn’t exist! The Source Turbo has a great mobile app to monitor estimated content temperature, vacuum level, current altitude setting and time remaining until auto-shutoff. Using the app is optional and not required for operation of the unit, so those that don’t want to use the app don’t have to.

Interested in extracting cannabis oil safely at home? The Source Turbo made by ExtractCraft is just what you need. Understanding advanced innovative products like the Source Turbo when there has never been anything like it before can be difficult, especially in the misinformation, opinion flooded internet world we live in. Read on for a clear understanding of what the Source Turbo is, how it works, why it’s the go-to equipment for small batch cannabis oil for THC concentrates, Hemp oil for CBD concentrates, or any botanical for various culinary art, aroma scenting, and apothecary applications.

64

WHAT IS THE SOURCE TURBO?

HOW THE SOURCE TURBO OPERATES

In general terms, the Source Turbo is an appliance that allows anyone to perform home ethanol extraction easily and safely, using any botanical material from lavender, sandalwood, hops, mushrooms to anything you’d like to use in culinary arts, scenting, smoking, vaping, and medicine making. The Source Turbo can also be used to produce incredible, highquality cannabis and CBD concentrates that will amaze from the first try. The Source Turbo is an advanced piece of extraction equipment with capabilities normally found only in a lab but designed

The Source Turbo performs the important operation of evaporating and purging ethanol in the ethanol extraction process. Traditionally, evaporation for at home extraction has been accomplished by allowing ethanol to naturally evaporate slowly for a couple days or by boiling it off using a heat source. Neither of these options are good because natural evaporation takes far too long and boiling off ethanol with heat destroys the most flavorful and aromatic elements of an extraction, thus, destroying quality. Most concerning, both options fill the

surrounding air with very combustible fumes which is wasteful and dangerous. The Source Turbo was designed to address and eliminate these problems. The Source Turbo is a self-contained, closed-loop system that solves old ethanol evaporation problems without cumbersome, difficult to use, expensive lab equipment. Vacuum technology and advanced system controls evaporate ethanol at close to body temperature, between 100°F-105°F under normal operations. The very low operational temperatures preserve the most delicate attributes of an extraction, creating the most high-quality, potent oil possible. Using a combination of vacuum, heat, and outside ambient temperature the vacuum chamber becomes a “cold-trap” and collection vessel to reclaim evaporated ethanol for reuse. Reclaiming ethanol for re-use keeps the dangerous fumes from filling the surrounding air and eliminating the danger, saves big money with every use, and eliminates waste. When the extraction process is completed the pure oil concentrate remains in the crucible and the clean reclaimed ethanol is separated in the collector.

STEP 2

STRAIN AND FILTER MATERIAL FROM THE ETHANOL SOLUTION.

STEP 5

2-4 HOURS LATER THE OIL IS READY. It’s easy and absolutely anyone can quickly learn to do this with a high degree of quality and success. The oil produced is the foundation for ALL concentrates. This oil can then be made into shatter, pull-n-snap, wax, crumble, cartridges, edibles, topical or anything you can imagine. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SOURCE TURBO AND OTHER DEVICES?

STEP 4

PUSH THE BUTTON TO START THE PROCESS.

Extraction vs. Infusion: A very common question is “What’s the difference between the Source Turbo and other butter makers and infusion devices?” The difference is enormous and to understand this we must differentiate between “infusion” and “extraction”. “Infusion” is the act of soaking botanical matter in a large amount of butter or carrier oil (like olive oil) to absorb the botanical oil contained in the plant. Regardless of claims to the contrary, the butter makers and infusion machines only perform the simple act of infusion resulting in a large volume of fat based carrier with a comparably low potency end product. The same process can be safely and easily accomplished on the stove top, in a slow cooker, or any combination of a vessel and heat source. Many infusion devices appear to be the same products found on Alibaba and Amazon by searching ‘soy bean milk maker’ and are obviously not designed for (nor the best method for) cannabis, hemp, nor botanical oil production. The devices unnecessarily

65

emulsify the plant matter and carry it into your infusion making thick green goo, and that’s all they do. The thick green plant matter smells and tastes terrible then causes many people gastric discomfort. Infusion devices don’t concentrate oil or butter in any way, instead they merely steep the plant material like a slow cooker, allowing the added butter or oil to absorb the CO from the cannabis, leaving the user with no control over potency. On the positive side, these machines are good for beginners as an introduction to making herbal products. They’re affordable, and easy to use. “Extraction” is entirely different, harvesting only pure oil from cannabis and hemp without added carrier oils, butter, or unnecessary plant material. The user extracts only pure cannabis, hemp, and botanical essential oils. Highly potent, pure concentrates result only from extraction and the Source Turbo is a tool used to do exactly that. The pure oil from extraction is the base for any form of concentrate: tincture, concentrated tincture, absolute, oil, wax, budder, pull-nsnap, shatter, edibles, topicals and more. Moreover, using concentrates for cooking provides not only a substantially cleaner and delicious edible but also the ultimate control of potency. A larger amount of concentrate can be combined with a small amount of butter to make it extremely potent, or less can be added to a larger amount of butter to ease the strength as much as desired. The Source Turbo delivers an incredible versatility to safely make high-quality concentrates, from any botanical, in any form or potency, creating a level of freedom and agility infusion devices can only dream of. Open vs. Closed Loop vs. Vacuum Assisted Closed Loop: How ethanol is boiled, evaporated, in some cases recaptured for re-use is determined by the type of system being used. An “open” system simply boils ethanol by applying heat and evaporating the vapor into the open air. Examples of this are old-school methods like using a pot on a hot plate or a rice cooker. This open evaporation approach causes many

66

obvious safety, quality, and affordability problems. When performing extractions, safety is paramount and evaporating ethanol into the air of an enclosed area is very dangerous since those fumes are combustible and will easily ignite. Quality is another problem resulting from the high temperature required to boil ethanol under normal ambient pressure. In an open system ethanol boils at about 173°F which is too high, destroys the delicate and beautiful compounds that define a quality concentrate, and chemically alters its make up limiting post processing options. Hot plates, pots, and rice cookers are inexpensive so many people mistakenly consider this to be the cheapest processing option, however, when all aspects of an extraction are considered there’s an affordability paradox that makes this process one of the most costly. The rice cooker device itself may be inexpensive but ethanol isn’t cheap and letting it evaporate into the air is an enormous waste of money. Next, the quality, and hence the value, of the final product must be accounted for and the high temperature purge used in open systems will produce the lowest quality medication. Low quality, less potent meds won’t go far, don’t last as long and require you to use more, which seriously decreases value. Additionally, the process of openly boiling ethanol requires constant attention and supervision, wasting valuable time you could spend doing something else. The rice cooker and other open system methods may be attractive to a home user because of the low cost but they’re not safe, produce low quality concentrates, and are not the most overall affordable option.

solve two of the problems associated with open systems to a limited degree. Safety is better because the majority of the alcohol vapor is condensed and collected for reuse, however, most of these devices drain into an open secondary collection vessel with condensers that get overwhelmed by the amount of hot vapor pushed through them allowing a lot of vapor to escape into the open air. This is a little safer but far from perfect. Average ethanol reclaim with these is around 60%-70%. An alcohol distiller is more expensive than a rice cooker but because the ethanol is recaptured for reuse it’s a little safer and more affordable in the long-term. Now for the bad news; these machines are designed for alcohol distillation, not oil extraction which creates serious quality and operational problems. Extractions made using a distiller or a rice cooker suffer from the same quality limitations. Distillers also work under normal ambient pressure so the operating temperatures are high and the quality of extract is low. It can also be very frustrating to use because the oil must be removed from a fixed vat that was actually designed to hold the waste from alcohol distillation. Using one is cumbersome, difficult, dangerously hot, and wasteful. For an average at home user, these units are quite large with substantial surface area in the oil collection area and are made to run large amounts of alcohol, so if you need to run a small batch of a couple ounces you’ll have difficulties. Alcohol distillers are an acceptable choice if you’re only making large batches of FECO and willing to sacrifice safety and the quality of oil for the production volume.

“Closed loop” systems also evaporate ethanol at open atmosphere temperatures of around 173°F, just like a rice cooker, but have the added ability to capture and reclaim some of the evaporated ethanol for reuse. The most popular of these devices are simple alcohol distillers, some dressed up with a sticker claiming to be an “Oil Machine” and charging hundreds of dollars more than the exact same distiller found online at less expensive retailers. These devices

The most advanced systems are “Vacuum Assisted Closed Systems,” and this is where the Source Turbo shines. Adding vacuum to a closed system keeps all of the activity enclosed within a self-contained unit allowing virtually nothing to escape and the low internal pressure allows the Source Turbo to boil and evaporate ethanol at nearly body temperature, with a range of 100°F to 105°F under normal operations. The ability to operate

at low temperatures in an enclosed environment solves all the problems of the other devices. It’s safe because everything is recollected internally, allowing no dangerous fumes or odors to escape during operation. In addition to vastly improved safety, the quality of the extraction and concentrates are unmatched. Using such low temperatures for the entire process ensures all the good stuff that was extracted from the plant is saved, protected, and packed into the concentrate. The quality is so tasty, smooth, and potent it’s actually unbelievable and this high-quality is key to great value. Higher quality, more potent medication will go further, last longer, and require you to use less, overall. Contrary to many first impressions, even with the retail price of $599, the Source Turbo is the most affordable option for at home extraction. What must be understood about the Source Turbo is the idea of affordability and value is more than just a

price tag. Using the Source Turbo provides savings of $10-$20 in ethanol with every use, safe and easy home operation, wildly superior quality concentrates, processing time of around 2 hours, and loads of fun experimenting with an unlimited number of crafting possibilities. A Day in the Life of TROG HIGH ART

Australian artist TROG’s work is focused on the culture of weed. Setting up his easel, globally at events, he works in real time painting wildly vivid depictions of a world where weed fuels the imagination. For collectors of psychedelic art, TROG’s work is mandatory. Vice Magazine praised him, stating he’s “The dopest illustrator and choof aficionado Australia has ever produced.” In 2015, TROG’s notoriety earned him his own cultivar, aptly named TROG; by Mountain High Organics Farm of Oregon. His work has been showcased in music videos in collaboration with musicians and celebrities, including Cheech & Chong, Snoop Dogg, and the Kottonmouth Kings, to name a few. Brightly colored, wild cartoon-like creations have bee put to cloth, within his Smelly Clothing Co. line, since 2014. But, his coloring books are partaking favorites, with him stating,

Daily Dose BY SHARON lETTS

“Weed and coloring just go together!” Coloring books include The Cooked Book, and The Killer Weed Coloring Book: For Marijuana Lovers – all made with durable covers you can roll a joint on. This year he launched The Dab Coloring Book and Let’s Draw, which allows fans to interact with TROG’s work.

LOCKED DOWN WITH AN EASEL

Currently on lockdown in Australia, due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic, Trog said the ordeal has actually had a huge silver lining for him, personally. “My work was set to be a part of an art show in Spain that also included some of my idols - Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton. The show was cancelled due to the virus,” he shared from his home in Australia. “But the real news for me is, the virus wiped out my deadline list, so I could actually finish a comic book I’ve been working on for years – and now it’s ready to go to print!” Artists and deadlines can be a buzzkill. For those who make their living in the creative arts, whether it’s writing or creating art, deadlines are a necessary evil and can make or break the fluidity of the work. “Deadlines suck balls!” he exclaimed. “It kills the creative art, to a degree. But, it’s like a pathway. You start out wanting to do so much, and you dream about it and strive towards it – you need to play the game or the deadlines will end up pushing you away from that dream. At the end of the day, you as the artist accept the deadline, so you need to accept the responsibility of delivering it.” The way he’s gotten around the deadline conundrum is to work on paying art first, then let his imagination run wild for his own pleasure, keeping the muse happy. “It’s funny, you will have pieces due and backed-up, and then you might sign a new piece to the list and you are into it and feeling the ideas for that particular project, so you push the other projects to the back and work on what inspires you, just to get it out of your head!” he explained. He added that brains are a weird place, where thoughts are not always in your control, they are within the power of the muse, that fuels the weirdness within.

70

His final thoughts on deadlines is, “If you want to be that old dude sitting there at 80 or 90 years-old, saying, ‘I gave it my all and helped contribute to something bigger than my own career, and contributed to a style of art that helped me breathe and live’, then deadlines are a big part of that!”

comics, and this latest work shows it. It’s a weird mix of little comic strips that will continue through the series of books, with some wack adventures. There are some really fried sketch pages, and there’s some pages to color – it’s a mix of everything I’ve done in the past, and then some.”

DRAWN TO THE PLANT

His plan is to include other artists in upcoming books in the series.

The first time Trog partook the plant was in the late 1980s, when he was just twelve-years-old. “My best friend Shem’s brother was older, and he had some weed and he asked if we wanted to join him,” he explained. Immediately and instinctively he knew it was good, even at this young age. “I knew it would not hurt anyone – contrary to what we had all heard,” he added. “I’m an artist and weed is just so fucking good to do when you are creating art! Sure, I can draw without it, but just being elevated from the plant, and drawing freely, lets you do some stuff that ends up being incredibly off the charts. At least that’s been my experience.” Influencers over the years have included Rick Griffin, Robert Crumb, Stanley Mouse, Gilbert Shelton, and Ed Roth, to name a few. “I dreamt I’d be an artist of their caliber, but within the world of weed,” he said, knowingly. “Everything in my life is art related counter culture art, old-school, high-as-fuck cartoon art.” His latest Coronavirus-lock down-induced comic book is titled You So High and is number zero, beginning a series of books to come. Even Trog admits there’s some “weird shit in there.” “When most people think of comics they think of clean-cut, friendly comics or cartoons – like mainstream stuff. That’s what they have grown up to know comics as. I never really got into that,” he chuckled. “My art and influence is from underground

“If you are looking for a comic book to read and enjoy, this probably isn’t going to be the book for you,” he advised. “But, if you want something you can pick-up when you are melted into the couch and just stare at when you’re high-as-shit, and laugh and find stuff within the pages, then this is the right book for you.” TROG’s work is his life and vis-à-vis. His work has become an iconic world of wonder, channeling into art what we feel while being lifted or pleasantly medicated. Creating spaces for our high minds to wander and ponder. “I don’t smoke twenty-four/seven, and I’m really not a huge stoner,” he concluded. “I smoke when I feel like it. But, cannabis will be close to my box of pens forever. It is and will be my muse until the day I die. But, most importantly, I know my art will live on within the world of cannabis long after I’m dead and gone. And that makes me happy.” FB: facebook.com/artofTROG IG: @artoftrog WEB: trogglass.com

Dedicated to Capt. Bobby “GFY” Watkins III Life throws some special people our ways sometimes. A presence that changes the smiles of everyone around you. One of those people was Captain Bobby Watkins III. A driver pulled out in front of him and his girlfriend, Kayla Nevins- both way too young. They were riding on the motorcycle. We lost them both. Save a life and look twice, ok? He promised that he would be my best man, I just took too long. I would gladly trade my life for the both of theirs, as they were both much better than I. Theirs are going to be tough shoes to fill. Better believe I'll do my best... I remember the year when we all got jobs at Daiquiri Deck in Venice, Florida (before I began making sushi). Back in the times of Florida living (and by that I mean, living on the edge) riding motorcycles, the salt life and wrestlin' gators with a dash of wild hogs. Wild and carefree, seeing the friends that I considered family. Because sometimes, water is thicker than blood. This month's recipe is one for the best of us. We would stay out all day on the boats on Snake Island in Venice until the sun went down and we still partied like rockstars after it was gone! I'd see Bobby at work the next morning, he'd look at me and say, "Cookie, cook me something for breakfast, brotha man. I'm hurting." So I'd usually bust out something fit for Florida men like us. Blackened alligator tacos with a quesadilla taco shell. Topped with all the good stuff and this time...it's got weeeed in it! Rest Easy, Brother.

GFY TACOS INGREDIENTS Flour Tortillas Shredded Cheese Blackening seasoning Black Bean and Corn Salsa Alligator meat (Be careful, they bite!) Infused Sunflower Oil (using my Magical Butter Machine) Lettuce Pico De Gallo Pesto Sauce

74

BY Chris Rodarte Cajun Remoulade (Infused using a teaspoon of "sauce") Guacamole (Infused same as above ingredient, easy) DIRECTIONS Place four tortillas on a flat top grill. Add cheese to two of them. Using time to our advantage leave them and grab a saute pan. Put a medium flame to the pan and toss a little sunflower oil in there- a couple of tablespoons will do. Keep that temperature below 250 degrees, as we do not want to ruin the THC content. Toss some fresh wrangled and prepared Alligator meat into your pan (make sure to be liberal with the blackening seasoning). Give the pan a couple quick shakes to toss everything around so it can homogenize properly.Let that pan sit while you go flip those tortillas onto the cheesy side so we can create our quesadillas. Flip again so the last uncooked part of the tortilla is on the grill. Grab a plate and place some lettuce, black bean corn salsa and a dash of pico in the center of your plate creating a beautiful little mound. This will hold up your finished product. While you're at it let's fill a ramekin with some infused guac and for fun, let's make a cucumber fan! Don't forget about that Alligator meat as it has a temper just like when it was alive. Trust me on that, a’ight?! It can go from rubber to perfect to dammit, fast. Only need to cook it for about ten minutes, and it will have a fish/chicken texture.

Mmmmmm! Turn off the heat to your saute pan. Go back to the quesadillas and brush a smidge of infused sunflower oil on them. Grab a small spoon. With gloves on, place the quesadilla in your hand and use your spoon to create a taco shell. Place that fire ass fresh blackened alligator meat inside and top with some shredded lettuce. Put some pico de gallo on that as you build up your stuffed taco. Hit it with some love of that infused Cajun remoulade. I used a zig-zag pattern, because for Bobby, I did it fancy! It's about this time he's asking if I was “bout' done yet? Place them both on opposite sides of the black bean/corn salsa tower. Cut a heirloom tomato in half and place it nicely for a little love. Remember that pesto? Place nice dots around the edge of the plate for a little flair. There we go! Now you're eating like a true Florida Man! This meal for the magazine is infused, but my brother didn't smoke. I swear he could out drink the best of ya, though. All while pumping his fist in the air, drinking a Coors Light and jamming to some George Strait, The Lacs or some Greg Billings Band. That's just, The Way It Goes Sometimes. We come from a place where we worked hard and played harder. Either way, we ate gooood! Thank you to Daiquiri Deck on Stickney Point in Sarasota, Florida for allowing me to re-create this meal of brotherly love. I enjoyed getting to see Chef John. Also, thank you to Murky Water Bowfishing Charters- that business is proof of how if you

chase your dreams, something magical can truly happen in our lives. Chase your dreams and make them YOUR REALITY! Speaking of magical, I'm always using my Magical Butter Machine and if you want to save some money on your next purchase. Use my code: CannaBushi for a sweet discount! Let your smile change the world, and never let the world change your smile. Love ya Capt. Boober. See you on the other side. WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES!
