Here Comes Spring! This month we interview Stephen Marley and his daughter Shacia Payne about Kaya Fest which comes to the NOS Center in San Bernardino next month. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Bob Marley’s Kaya album, this year’s Kaya Fest will feature performers such as Stephen Marley, Ziggy Marley, Damian Marley, Julian Marley, Ky-Mani Marley, Ms. Lauryn Hill, SOJA, Action Bronson, Cypress Hill and Common Kings. This is going to be a great festival, and one of the only places that you will get to see many of the Marleys performing together. Our cover tribute to Bob Marley was created by artist Cliff Maynard and it was creating entirely from used roach papers. It is the burnt paper that creates the various degrees of color. To check out more of Cliff’s work, visit his Facebook page @ RoachPaperArt. Have you ever wondered how many companies within the Nevada cannabis industry are actually from Nevada? Well, look no further than Nature’s Chemistry. In this issue, Josh Ranck visits the cultivation to speak with four Vegas locals that are growing some of the finest cannabis in town. Also in this issue, we feature not one, but two awesome artists. Aaron Neiman is a local tattoo artist, painter and owner of Heritage Tattoo. And, Mohan, who is based in LaJolla, California has work currently on exhibit in the downtown Arts District. Both artists consume cannabis and have also created an array of stunning cannabis-related visual pieces. Here’s to a great month!

When asked about the second annual Kaya Fest, Stephen Marley, shared "this year, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of my father's album Kaya, we wanted to go even bigger - more artists, more love and more people celebrating with us from all over the world." Recently we had the chance to speak with Stephen about the upcoming Kaya Fest as well as his involvement in the cannabis industry.
VCM: Tell us about the upcoming Kaya Fest. And, tell us what "kaya" means.
STEPHEN: Kaya is the feeling
you experience when making a connection with your higher self. The festival began in an effort to further educate people on the many benefits of cannabis and bring the community together to amplify the message, with music.
VCM: Prior to last year’s inaugural Kaya Fest, how long had it been since the Marley brothers were on stage together?
STEPHEN: Well, prior to last year it
had been some time before we were on stage together in Miami, but we perform together often in other locations.
VCM: The focus of Kaya Fest is
education before recreation. Growing up in Jamaica, tell us how you have witnessed the healing benefits of cannabis.
STEPHEN: Growing up in Jamaica
herb was always a part of our life and our culture. From granny to grandson, many people were smoking herb – especially in 9 Mile. My grand-aunt used to make an ailment that included rum, pimento, herb and a few other elements, that she would rub on her for skin to help soothe her arthritis.
VCM: At what age did you start consuming cannabis?

STEPHEN: They understand

cannabis is an herb, like mint, thyme or basil. you play a role in legalization there? And, do you have any industry ventures in the state of Florida?
STEPHEN: I live all over, not just
in one place. I hope we can inspire more people to educate themselves about cannabis and figure out how it can benefit their own lives.
VCM: Do you have any plans
to bring any of your cannabis ventures to Nevada?
SHACIA: Kaya Fest will be the first time my Father and I perform on the same stage, and I'm sure we both can't wait. VCM: How did you get into mixing, and what are your goals as a DJ? SHACIA: DJing has been a passion of mine for a longtime, and as the only DJ in our family, I am excited to share my own emotional connection to the music with thousands of
new friends at Kaya Fest. VCM: You will be at the upcoming Kaya Fest, what can your fans expect? SHACIA: First, we all should thank both of my parents for raising me around a deep love for music. Music and DJing have given me opportunities to reach different people all over the world and to blend any lines or boundaries. It's unity and exploration through music and I think people will really get into it at Kaya Fest. VCM: Give us your thoughts and views on cannabis. What will you tell your children about the herb? SHACIA: Cannabis is an herb that deserves our respect, even if
you decide it's not for you to use. There are many benefits and uses beyond smoking, like Cannabee, a natural healing medication. If and when the time comes to speak to my children about the herb, I would want them to learn about the benefits and not ever feel pressured. VCM: What do you have coming up in the future? SHACIA: In many ways I feel like I'm just getting started and so my focus is on more living of my purpose, whatever that includes. More Justice. More exploration, enlightenment, faith, giving and focus on using my life and music as a vehicle for these things and more.
STEPHEN: Would love to. VCM: What do you think you
father would think of the cannabis movement today?
STEPHEN: He would like it. VCM: What will we see in the
future from the next generation of Marleys?
STEPHEN: More music and social consciousness.
VCM: Any final thoughts on cannabis?
STEPHEN: The cannabis plant
is very important and we must educate people on the role that is supposed to play. Not all miracles come from the sky, some miracles come from the Earth, like cannabis.

NATURE'S CHEMISTRY Embodies the Spirit of Nevada's Cannabis Laws
I
n an unremarkable building in the north valley, four longtime locals are growing some of the finest cannabis in Vegas.
When Nevada began considering recreational cannabis sales, the state was adamant that all cannabusiness be conducted within the state’s boundaries. Meaning, no products can cross state borders. Not just because cannabis is still federally illegal and crossing state lines with cannabis (even state-legal cannabis) is a federal crime. The state’s vision was to create businesses that were owned and operated by local Nevadans. To keep the revenue here in the state. Nature’s Chemistry is realizing the state’s vision as a completely local-owned cannabis cultivation. I’m sitting in the office at Nature’s Chemistry with Andy Hitchcock, Alex Amelburu, and Ari Yazdanpanah, three of the four owner/operators. The office is small, even though the building is more than 23,000 square feet. “The building is block with all-metal studs, there’s no wood in the facility. It helps
prevent molds from forming,” Alex says. “And it lets us have more control over humidity.” I’m asking technical questions, hoping to get a hint as to how they consistently grow quality cannabis. I want to find out their big secret. Nature’s Chemistry is a small operation compared to some of Nevada’s cannabis cultivations. They only have 28 employees, most of whom have been with the company from the beginning. So, how is this humble little cultivation making such a big impact on the local cannabis scene? How are they regularly turning out such fine cannabis? “To be honest, we keep it quite simple while paying the most attention to the small and menial aspects that many cultivators can overlook. Cleanliness is also paramount here,” Ari says. Which is awesome. So is the fact that they only hand trim and package. Hand-prepped cannabis beats machineprepped every time … but that’s not the reason their strains regularly test between 20-25% THC, and often higher. Handprepping doesn’t account for their terpene levels! “Can you tell me about your genetics?” I ask. “Do you use a specific source?” “We got our genetics from a select few patients,” Andy says. “Genetics are important, but getting the plant to realize
its best expression is just as important, maybe more.” AHA! Finally, I’m getting closer to finding out their secret. “So what are you doing to make that happen?” I ask. “What does Nature’s Chemistry do that sets you apart from other cultivators?” “We’ve got the same 1000-watt HPS lights, pretty much the same base nutes, the same standard grow techniques as the rest,” Ari says. “We’re not reinventing the wheel here. We’re just giving the plant exactly what it needs at the exact time it needs it.” “And cleanliness. We spend a lot of time cleaning,” Alex adds and they all smile and groan. “We’re maximizing the environment to bring out the plant’s best characteristics,”
Andy says. “But, how did you get 26% THC and a 52 mass-terpene total in your last batch of Star Killer?” I blurt out. “There’s got to be a secret, right?” “Well, the secret is … there’s no secret,” Alex replies. “It’s not one specific thing. It’s a hundred little things coming together at the right time.” Hmmm, I thought. We’ll see about that. “Can we go see the cultivation?” I ask. They gave me the full tour, which started in the Mother and Clone room. Green and vibrant life thriving under bright light. Healthy mothers living with their precious little babies, but no secrets. Just a perfect nursery, like others I’ve seen
THE LATEST before. We moved on to the Veg Room. Again, lush plants getting taller and bushier, but no secret techniques. Just hydro systems and lights similar to what I’ve seen in other cultivations. Next up was the Water Room. Giant vats of reverse osmosis water mixing with nutrients and being dispersed at specific times. Very intricate, but still not the secret. Jason Yazdanpanah, Ari’s brother, joins us. “So, you’re the Head Grower?” I ask. I could tell the term is uncomfortable for him. “Cultivating is a team effort more than anything,” he replies. “Our in-house cultivator, Hassan Assahouri and I head up most of the operations, but it’s a complete team effort with our whole staff.” This team mentality has served them well as they’ve grown their business. They all get their hands sticky every day, working the plants. This hands-on approach is one of the key factors they contribute to their success so far. It’s rare that the cultivation executives are the ones actually working the plants. But there’s more to be done besides working the plants. A lot more. Alex handles much of the construction, facility management, and compliance. Andy works most closely with retailers and suppliers. Jason & Hassan oversee the majority of the cultivation processes. And Ari oversees all aspects of the operation. “How long have you been growing?” I ask Jason. “Well, before all this, I was passionate about cannabis, but I’d never cultivated,” he responds. “I had some knowledge, but was nowhere near ready to
take on a project like this.” So he studied, and read, and traveled to learn from master growers across the country. Time spent in cultivations in Colorado and Washington and California opened his eyes to the actualities of commercial cultivation. He tells me about time spent at Harborside in Oakland, one of the pioneer businesses in the industry. “I learned about commercial cultivation and plant management. Diagnosing problems and how to solve them. I was consumed with R&D. It’s really all that I did, getting ready to open this place.” There was way more to commercial cultivation than any of them realized. But they kept going, kept learning. They didn’t give up their goal to make this cultivation a success. And it’s working. I just need to find out the big secret that makes it work. Finally, we head to the Flower Rooms. Giant rolling tables hold flowers ranging from justtransferred to ready-to-chop. Again, more of the same kinds of systems and techniques I’d seen before. There’s nothing proprietary. No big door marked: Secret Room: KEEP OUT! The lights are overpowering and the scent permeating the air is a whole-body experience. I feel it clinging to my sinuses and seeping into my pores. “I can’t wash the smell all the way out of my clothes,” Alex tells me. “I always smell like cannabis.” Which is very ironic, since he doesn’t use cannabis – yet. Alex Amelburu is a twenty-year member of the Clark County Fire Department, which has a no-use directive regarding cannabis. He retires this spring and will finally be
able to enjoy what he’s been working so hard on these last few years. Ari doesn’t regularly use cannabis either. His interests lie in cultivating and propagating the plants, not smoking them. He’s especially keen on the health and medicinal benefits of CBD and is testing a CBD-dominant strain to introduce into their grow cycle. Jason is a regular user who
shares his brother’s thoughts towards their business, and that cannabis is a healing plant, with a multitude of applications beyond recreational use. Andy is a regular medical user and has a ‘five-finger rule’ that he says applies to everything Nature’s Chemistry grows. He ticks off his five tenets: “It has to look good (thumb), smell good (pointer), taste good (middle), make you feel good (ring), and the effects have to
last (pinky).” “Wait, wait, wait,” Ari interrupts. “Please, let’s be clear about all of this … we’re not just about recreational, get-you-high cannabis.” “We’re very much about the medicinal benefits of cannabis,” Jason says. “That’s our passion here. Our plants are helping and healing people. That’s why I love doing what we do.” And right there, standing in the flower room, I realized their true secret. It goes way back. Before Nature’s Chemistry. Even before Nevada had any laws allowing cannabis cultivation. Alex and Andy have been best friends since first grade. They both graduated from Chaparral High School in 1992. Ari and Jason are brothers. They graduated from Valley High School near the same time as Alex and Andy and have been part of the group since the
beginning. Ari and Alex both hold degrees from UNLV. Ari in Health Care Management and Alex in Kinesiology. These four have been palling around for decades. Their career paths drew them in different directions for a long while, with Andy moving into real estate, Alex working as a CCSD teacher until landing his position with the Fire Department, and Ari and Jason owned businesses in the automotive, restaurant industries, and health care services until the fates came together and presented them this opportunity. This is truly a ‘Local Boys Make Good’ kind of story. Their big secret is the relationship these men have. It’s the camaraderie and familiarity and friendship they share that translates to their cultivation. It’s the humility they brought to the project. It’s the learning and failing and doing
better the next time. We move on to the Cure Room, which is stacked with whole plants hanging to dry, and bins filled with curing buds. The smell is ten times more powerful than the Flower Rooms and I close my eyes and savor the moment. We finish in the Trim Room, where the sound of snips competes with playful conversations and laughter. The trimmers didn’t get all tense when we walked in, like has happened in other cultivations I toured with executives and owners. They didn’t stop chatting or start clipping faster. There was a definite sense of comfort and familiarity with the owners. It felt like one big happy family.
We returned to the office where I made a few final notes I didn’t wind up using. Even though it turned out to be something very different than what I was expecting, I’d discovered their secret. I’d learned what I came to learn. And this is it: Nature’s Chemistry thrives because they’re a family with one shared goal – to create an environment where both plants and people can flourish. >>> REGULATING NEVADA
W
\\ #702VCM \\ VEGAS CANNABIS
By: Dr. Aseem Sappal
hile Nevada may be the fastest state to move on regulating the sale and consumption of adult-use cannabis, not everyone has been happy with the process. On January 16, 2018, the Nevada Department of Taxation-- the authority that regulates the operation of cannabis establishments, awards and limits licensing, and carries out other provisions of Ballot Measure 2—held a public meeting to allow for comment on proposed regulations. Hundreds of business owners, cannabis consumers and citizens showed up. Stand-alone growers were especially vocal, fearing they are being squeezed out of the market due to provisions in the regulations that give dispensaries an economic advantage. For years growers have supplied medical dispensaries with Nevada-grown cannabis, but the new regulations allow dispensaries to grow their own cannabis. Should enough dispensaries get cultivation licenses (there is no cap in Nevada), some growers may be forced out of business. The temporary regulations outlined in Ballot Measure 2 included a set of guidelines on how to rank applicants, which rewarded those who already had experience operating a cannabis business. In Nevada the majority of those initial licenses went to existing medical dispensaries. This gave dispensaries first opportunity to apply for not only adult-use retail licenses, but cultivation and production licenses as well. A number of dispensaries are vertically integrated and grow cannabis in their own facilities separate from their storefronts and others will soon put their own cultivation operations in place. The temporary regulations will expire in March. Following the January 16th public meeting, the Department of Taxation reviewed and unanimously approved the proposed permanent regulations which are now before the Nevada Legislative Commission for final approval later this month. A number of stand-alone growers have formed the For Fairness in the Cannabis Industry LLC and have appealed to the Legislative Commission to level the playing field. This includes allowing growers to partner with dispensaries/retailers or allowing them to open their own retail storefronts. Spokespeople from the Legislative Commission have agreed to be fair but also mindful of regulations and laws in the final review. Currently there are 63 retail stores, 96 cultivators, 67 producers and eight labs licensed. Beginning in November 2018, non-medical cannabis licensees may apply for a retail license, which will open the marketplace even wider. Along with establishing cannabis regulations, states must also implement those regulations and Nevada cannabis testing labs are feeling that pressure now. Four of the eight licensed testing labs have had their licenses suspended, three of them since late in 2017. Reliable third party cannabis testing is important to ensure consumers have access to safe, effective and trustworthy products. The Department of Taxation has made it clear that they have a zero tolerance policy regarding regulatory noncompliance and with adult-use cannabis regulations still so new, their goal is to address issues early. Cannabis regulation is complicated. Like other states where adult-use cannabis is regulated, Nevada will continue to experience growing pains as they work to find the best solutions to serve everyone. BY MITCHELL S. BISSON, ESQ. MANAGING ATTORNEY CALLISTER LAW GROUP
The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers
Another month has gone by and it appears that Jeff “Smoke” Sessions and the DEA are continuing their crusade against anything and everything cannabis related. In January, Sessions announced the rescission of the Cole and Ogden Memorandums, which shook the cannabis world. Now, Sessions is going even further and taking the Industrial Hemp industry to task by attacking the entire Cannabis sativa L. plant and its “other” major cannabinoid – CBD. Sessions is charging forward with the implementation of a proposed DEA final rule which effectively categorizes CBD as a Schedule I drug alongside THC. If you’re not familiar with the scientific terminology, Cannabis sativa L. is the species of plant that we all know and love as weed. Don’t be thrown off by the word “sativa” being in there; Cannabis sativa L. includes all strains/variations of weed – sativa, indica, hybrid. Cannabis sativa L. also includes the lesser-known form of the plant - “Industrial Hemp.” In 2014, Congress passed what is known as the Farm Bill, allowing states to regulate the cultivation of Industrial Hemp – which it defined as “the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of such plant” with a THC content of 0.3% or less. While the low THC content in Industrial Hemp makes it a poor choice if you’re looking to get high, Industrial Hemp produces high quantities of the other sought-after cannabinoid – CBD, which has enormous medicinal benefits and other uses. Now that you received your quick botany lesson, let’s get to exciting legal stuff! On February 15, 2018, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments on the DEA’s attempt to throw out a lawsuit filed on behalf of the Hemp Industries Association challenging the December 2016 proposed final rule that would establish a Controlled Substances code number for “marijuana extracts.” The problem, attorneys for the Hemp Industries Association say, is in how the DEA defined what is considered a “marijuana extract.” According to the proposed rule, a “marijuana extract” is “an extract containing one or more cannabinoids that has been derived from any plant of the genus Cannabis…” The Hemp Industries Association argues that the creation of this new rule for “marijuana extracts” effectively subjects currently legal products made from Industrial Hemp, such as CBD oil, to the Controlled Substances Act and treats them as Schedule I drugs. Of course, the DEA takes the position that the new coding action was simply for administrative purposes, and that nothing new has been “scheduled.” The DEA argues that its March 2017 “Clarifying Statement” made it clear that the new code does not apply to the parts of the Cannabis plant that are exempted from the Controlled Substances Act – those being the mature stalks of the Cannabis sativa L. plant. However, in the same clarifying statement and in their Court filings, the DEA makes some ominous and quite bold statements. The DEA claims that cannabinoids are only found in
32
the parts of the cannabis plant that fall within the definition of “marijuana” in the Controlled Substances Act and are not found in the exempt parts of plant, other than in very trace amounts. The DEA is effectively stating they do not believe that CBD can be derived from the exempt parts of the Cannabis sativa L. plant and thus, CBD and all CBD products are Schedule I drugs. They claim scientific evidence supports this position, but anyone involved in the Industrial Hemp or CBD industry know this is complete nonsense and the “scientific evidence” is widely considered not credible. While the DEA implies that the new coding action is innocuous to the Industrial Hemp industry, it is obvious that this proposed coding action has emboldened other arms of the federal government to take action. For example, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol have now started seizing shipments of CBD oil at the border as being “contraband in violation of the Controlled Substances Act.” Of course, said CBD oil contains no THC, yet the government’s new and scientifically-weak argument that CBD can only come from the “bad” parts of the plant is causing quite the ruckus. As another example of how this is affecting the industry, a few weeks ago federal, state, and local law enforcement officials in Tennessee conducted a raid of 23 retail stores for selling CBD products – or what Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh incorrectly called illegal “synthetic cannabinoids.” These store owners are now facing charges for selling products that are not only exempt from the Controlled Substances Act, but also fully legal under the state of Tennessee’s own laws that allow the sale of CBD products so long as the THC content is 0.3% or below. This complete misunderstanding of the Cannabis sativa L. plant and her glorious cannabinoids is downright frustrating and needs to be cleared up. Hopefully the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals – which has ruled favorably for the Hemp industry before – will agree with me and this madness can end. The Court is expected to issue its final decision in the next few months, but until then, I fear more unlawful seizures and raids will occur. That’s why it is necessary to stay vigilant and aware. We cannot allow “Smoke” Sessions and his cronies to sneak legislation and administrative “rules” by us unsuspecting and trample all over the cannabis movement. We have come too far. As always, we must #StayWoke. Follow Mitch on Instagram @Cannab_Esq

SEEING GREEN IS BELIEVING >>>
I
worked as both a Pre-K and Kindergarten teacher for a small private school back then. It was actually more of a co-op, as my classroom also served as lab time for those adults enrolled in my Parent Education workshops. This allowed parents to directly experience the planning and implementation of lessons in the “three R’s”, in addition to art, science, and social studies. Hours spent in my classroom provided hands-on application of what they had learned in their workshops along with other concepts in early childhood education. It was a breezy day in mid-March when the parents assigned to work with me, along with eighteen children stood in the doorway of our classroom utterly stunned. Ordinarily upon entering the room, students immediately fetch carpet squares for themselves and their attending grown-ups, then we all gather for morning circle. But on this particular morning, as I opened the door our mouths dropped at what we saw.

Every small chair had been knocked over. Every carpet square had been tossed across the room, as though it had been used as a floppy Frisbee. There were unfinished paintings on the easels. Our homemade Playdough had been left out on various tables, molded and shaped into a variety of inappropriate forms. These X-rated sculptures were left to dry out and decay, with bits and pieces scattered over the indoor-outdoor carpeting. One of the arms, of what appeared to be a Merman, fell onto the table with a clunk, as we entered the room. Worst of all, our classroom pets were out of their cages, roaming freely about the room. I was most concerned about finding and placing Terrance the tarantula back into his dry aquarium. I never did want that spider in my classroom. Nor was I terribly fond of Betty the bearded dragon who was also M.I.A. The disarray was truly upsetting for the children who had grown accustomed to order and cleanliness in their school. Routines and schedules are key to managing a classroom of very young children and parents. What had happened overnight? Who would do something like this? Why would they do it? Had we been robbed?
VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM
The children, parents and I set to work reorganizing our classroom. Sadly throwing out the dried-up Play-Doh, tossing paint that had been left uncovered, replacing chairs, and sweeping up dirt from overturned flower pots. To offset the soft sounds of sniffling and mumbling, I put on Julie Andrews’ song, “A Spoonful Of Sugar,” from her film, Mary Poppins. This seemed to help as we made our way from mess to mess; it became clear, at least to me, what had happened during the night. We had been visited by . . . leprechauns. For those who are unfamiliar with leprechauns, they are male fairies of Irish descent. Many leprechauns are employed as, were their fathers and grandfathers, cobblers. That is why if you listen closely, you will hear the faint tap, tap, tap of their cobbler’s hammer when they are nearby. Always dressed in green, with black aprons, and big buckles on their shoes, they tend to be older, mature men with long white beards and a pipe clenched between their teeth. Not as mean or cranky as say, Rumpelstiltskin, leprechauns can be quite mischievous and naughty. Whether working as a cordwainer or not doesn’t seem to make much difference, since each has rights to their own pot of gold. This excess of unearned wealth evidently gives plenty of free time to make trouble, hence the invasion of my classroom. After two of the dads bravely caught all the classroom pets and order had been restored, one of the children excitedly called us over to my desk. He had discovered a small black pot set inside one of the file drawers of my desk. What was he doing going through my desk? There inside the small caldron were gold coins, tons of them. Chocolate coins, wrapped in gold foil, to be precise. I gave each child and adult one candy then we gathered together for a much delayed circle time. This unusual start to our school-day provided me with one of those teachable moments. Here was an opportunity to explore our feelings about what occurred, how we dealt with it and whether I was correct in my assumption that it was indeed leprechauns who had visited during the night. Assembled on our carpet squares, we embarked upon a discussion regarding the importance of leaving things in the same condition you found them. We shared our thoughts on the contradiction of what one person considers “playing” while others might consider it roughhousing or mean-spirited play. The simple act of asking before you use things that belong to someone else was easily understood by my young students. And finally, we explored the meaning and intent of those gold coins. How did those coins get there? And why were they left in my desk drawer? Were Leprechauns leaving behind payment or retribution for coming into our classroom and messing with our things? The longest part of our discussion was whether it was truly Leprechauns that committed these high-jinks. A few of the children accused me of doing it. Some accused my teaching assistant. When we promised, and pinky swore, it wasn’t us, all kinds of crazy and less likely hypotheses were presented. I was shocked at how few believed in leprechauns. Realizing this looked to be a more in-depth exploration of those little people and their shenanigans, I decided

to change that week’s lesson plan theme to make-believe versus reality; what do you believe in that you’ve never seen? The following day we talked about the Easter Bunny. Those Cadbury commercials really confused some of the kids. How do you explain a full-sized bunny that clucks and lays eggs like a chicken? Is there such a thing as an Easter Chicken? The next day we examined the Tooth Fairy? Now she was a reality for the children who had already lost baby teeth and those with older siblings who had awoken to find money under their pillows. She was a more “hoped-for” yet uncertainty for those who had only heard about her. I did share my little sister’s experience of actually seeing the Tooth Fairy in our medicine cabinet when she was five years old. She claims upon opening the cabinet to get her toothbrush and paste she heard a small, yet distinct scream. There, before her eyes was a tiny sparkling, fairy, in blue and white fairy clothing. In fright, my sister immediately slammed the cabinet closed, then ever so slowly re-opened it. Alas, the Fairy had disappeared. Now in her late 50’s, my sister still stands by her story as true. Santa was easy. Every one of my students believed in Santa and their beliefs were fully supported by every parent in the room. I was even given a complete list of Santa’s favorite foods: cookies with milk, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, kettle corn, and butterscotch pudding? Several children included what Santa’s reindeer like to eat; carrots, apples, celery and sometimes carrot cake, if Santa feels they’ve been really, really good. This favorite food conversation gave me an idea about what other mythical-magical beings like to eat, specifically, leprechauns. Saint Patrick’s Day was only days away. Most households, be they of Irish descent or not, would likely be enjoying corned beef and cabbage with boiled potatoes and carrots on the side for dinner on that night. When I inquired about foods leprechauns might like, the children were ambivalent. “What about shepherd’s pie?” piped up one of the parents. Only a handful of children knew what shepherd’s pie was. Finally, “Green eggs and ham?” called out one student. I thought that was quite a brilliant

answer. I pointed out the overall consensus that pretty much all green food is good for you. (There were a few parents that knew what I was referring to.) After kicking around more ideas about dishes that were either true Irish fare along with those that were simply green, we decided to hold our own Feast of Saint Patrick at school with a potluck lunch. Sampling authentic Irish food along with foods that were green might help us reach an agreement about what, besides chocolate gold coins, leprechauns like best. On Friday, March 17th, one by one the children and parents (nannies and au pairs) arrived with Irish fare in hand, along with some American cuisine gone green. There was Irish Soda Bread and Barmbrack or “brack.” A cross between a cake and bread with raisins and special items baked inside, predicting the future of the individuals who receive slices with the small gifts. We had Irish stew and shepherd’s pie. Two families joined forces and prepared boxty or poundy. Though the names were unfamiliar, once tasted the children recognized them as potato pancakes. There was colcannon, a combination of mashed potatoes and green kale. My assistant prepared champ, another mashed potato mixture, this one with green scallions and lots of butter and heavy cream. Of course there was the proverbial corned beef (sandwiches) with boiled cabbage on the side. I prepared a big pot of coddle, another Irish stew of potatoes and carrots. Mine was laden with pork sausage, bacon, and onion. Aye! There was plenty o’ green on our table too. Those green eggs and ham, green waffles, and salad greens. One of the dads brought his margarita machine and stayed busy blending up a green limeade and coconut concoction that was very tasty and very green. But the biggest hit of all was a humongous bowl of green popcorn & pretzel party mix! This simple mêlée of snack treats was both festive and as green as green can get! Green candied popcorn combined with green M & M’s, pretzels and both, white and dark chocolate chips. The decision was unanimous; the green candied popcorn & pretzel party mix would certainly be the most sought after food for any leprechaun. Our week of make believe versus reality provided not only food for thought but opened many up to the possibilities of understanding there are some things we just can’t see, but somehow know exists. Better yet, there was a new found appreciation for all foods green! We closed our day with our traditional goodbye song and an Irish farewell wish I learned from my Irish friend, Aengus: “May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow and may trouble avoid you wherever you go.” I recently shared this story with another friend of Irish descent, Bridgen. She happens to love snacks, infused T.V. snacks that is. She asked me to prepare an infused version of this treat to better enjoy her Saint Patrick’s Day while on the couch of her living room. Here it is:
COSMIC MUFFIN’S RECIPE FOR
Infused Candied Green Popcorn & Pretzel Party Mix Ingredients for Candied Popcorn 1 quart popped corn 1 1/2 cups fine granulated sugar (bakers sugar) 1/2 cup light corn syrup 3 Tbs cannabutter 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp cream of tartar 1 tsp vanilla bean paste 1 tsp baking soda 1/8 tsp green gel coloring
Process for Candied Popcorn In a heavy pot, over medium-low heat, melt butter then whisk in sugar, corn syrup, cream of tartar and salt. Increase to mediumhigh and bring mixture to a boil. Add food gel then stir just until sugar is dissolved. Stop stirring. You may use a pastry brush dipped in water to clean side of sauce-pot if sugar mixture begins sticking to pot. Allow mixture to boil for approximately 5 minutes or until candy thermometer reads 250-260 degrees. Remove pot from heat then carefully add vanilla and baking soda. While mixture is still warm, carefully pour over popped corn that has been spread in a single layer on a very well greased baking sheet. Bake in 200 degree oven for 45 -60 minutes, stirring with rubber spatula that has also been well greased, every 15-20 minutes. Allow to cool completely until ready to use. Ingredients for Popcorn & Pretzel Mix 2-3 cups small pretzel twists 6-8 cups green-candied popcorn 1 cup honey-roasted peanuts (omit for peanut allergies) 1 cup green M&M’s 2 cups white chocolate chips 1 cup dark chocolate chips 4 Tablespoons canna-canola oil 1-2 teaspoons kosher salt/to taste Green sprinkles and/or kief for garnish Process for Candied Popcorn & Pretzel Mix Melt 1 cup of the white chocolate chips, stirring continuously until smooth. One by one, dip one side of each pretzel into melted chocolate and place on a sheet of waxed paper. While chocolate is still wet, sprinkle coated pretzels with green sprinkles and/or kief. Allow pretzels to set. Using two or more baking sheet pans, lined with waxed paper, spread cooled candied popcorn in a single layer. Divide the peanuts, over the top of popcorn. In separate mixing bowl, combine dark chocolate chips with 2 Tbsp cannacanola oil and melt until completely melted and smooth, stirring every 2 minutes. Using a large spoon, drizzle melted chocolate over popcorn mixture. Repeat this same process with remaining white chocolate chips and canna-oil. Sprinkle popcorn mixture with salt and additional green sprinkles and/or kief while chocolate is still wet. Allow to set. Once coated popcorn mixture has cooled, break into bite-sized pieces and combine in large serving bowl with coated pretzels and green M&M’s. Makes approximately 12 cups

TALES FROM THE CRIP
a patient's perspective
By Peter Jay
PATIENCE IS OVERRATED A theme frequently addressed in this space is how the passage of time is the only thing that guarantees change. The problem is that we human beings are extremely impatient. We want what we want immediately and we will brook no slowdown on the Road to Gratification, which not-so-surprisingly also runs right past the Spearmint Rhino. We want to lose weight NOW, we want to shed debt NOW, we want our ideal world NOW! DAMN IT! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?
Currently, alcohol is the primary means employed by casinos to help gamblers not mind being separated from their money, and it lends itself quite nicely to that end.

Many people were quite hopeful that the legalization of recreational marijuana here in the Silver State would result in the immediate Amsterdam-ization of Las Vegas. Leave us not bullshit each other: is there another city in this country which could so easily transform itself into Marijuana Paradise than the Big LV? We tick all of the right boxes: legal marijuana availability, our vast array of cool stuff to do 24/7, the sheer volume of lavish buffets and Hash House A-Go-Go’s…the mind boggles! Right now, BigCasinosInc (LLC) avoids marijuana as if it were Ebola, but you can bet that that will change (and right quickly!) once the Feds/Congress/Dear Abby (who truly runs this country—yes, I’m old) get all of the legal-bation sorted out. So where might we expect to be five years from now with respect to the passionate embrace of legal marijuana in Las Vegas? I believe that legal marijuana will completely revolutionize the Las Vegas tourist experience, affecting everything from transportation to gambling to entertainment. For example: sure, you could catch a casino shuttle from the airport and poke your way along the Strip to your hotel…OR you could climb aboard the local party bus, pay a nominal fee, and smoke/toke/vape your way to your designated casino. While it would take the same amount of time to get where you are going, you’ll likely get baked AF in the process with a BUNCH of like-minded people, so WHO REALLY CARES how long it takes? Smart operators will offer snacks; you can’t go far wrong with a Fatburger, especially with east coast tourists who never tried one before and will suspect that witchcraft was involved in its creation…I know that I did. Currently, alcohol is the primary means employed by casinos to help gamblers not mind being separated from their money, and it lends itself quite nicely to that end. When drunk, people are hot-headed, impetuous and willing to do stupid shit at a moment’s notice. Have you ever watched a jumpin’ Craps table at 1:00 AM? It’s a fascinating experience, because the drinkers are drunk, the teetotalers are in bed, the dice are flying and the mood is JOYFUL! Now, replace the Jack Daniels and Stolichnaya being served at that craps table with Jack Herer

and Kosher Kush and you are likely experiencing an entirely different gaming dynamic. Do you see where I’m going with this? You know how casinos now have non-smoking areas? I predict non-stoning areas. Why? How can I phrase this delicately…stoners can take forever just to figure out what we want to eat. Can you imagine blackjack neophyte Nancy Nebraska, baked completely off of her ass and trying to figure if she should hit a soft 15 while being surrounded by drunks who are DYING to bet their mortgage money? That could grow ugly quickly, not that Nancy would care due to her being really, really high but it WOULD be unfair to the drunks. It’s just a suspicion, but I bet drinkers will gamble more vigorously and more often than stoners will; personally, I’d rather go to Mandalay and try to communicate telepathically with the sharks: “FISH ARE FRIENDS, NOT FOOD!”. Finally, I believe that casino entertainment will find ways to integrate the theme of legalized marijuana directly into their attractions. It will start simply, maybe with the Blue Man Group distributing Blue Dream pre-rolls before the show, but how far off can a Cirque du Soleil tribute to the Grateful Dead really be? “Long Strange Trip” indeed. UPDATE: In a previous article, I mentioned vacillating (ouch!) about whether or not to renew my membership in the Nevada Medical Marijuana Program (NMMP). I am happy to say that I did renew, and I’ll happily tell you why. I like the “head of the line” status that I am afforded at most dispensaries. I like having access to the stronger “medical only” strains offered by some. I like that I can buy more product at once than can a recreational user. I like saving 10% to 15% on my purchases due to the modified taxation on medical marijuana products. But my favorite reason is that even if the unthinkable happens and we return to the days of recreational prohibition, I will likely still have access to my medicine. WITH ROB RUCKUS So, normally I use The Rant to bitch about things I feel are wrong in our cannabis community. This month however I’d like to use it to educate a little bit on something I wholeheartedly stand for. I’m an old school cat. Smoking weed has been in my life, ALL my life. Before I moved to Las Vegas in 1979 I lived in California and pot was everywhere! My whole family (except my mom) smoked and I was grabbing the rolling tray by the time I could walk. I started rolling for family members while I was still in middle school, and then for myself in high school. When I’d have asthma attacks as a kid my dad would light a joint and blow the hit into my lungs to open up the bronchial tubes instead of having to go to the hospital. All the while, not knowing then why it worked, I now know it was the terpene pinene that acted as the bronchial dilator. Cannabis has always been a part of my life. While smoking DOES have some wonderful medicinal benefits, the oil of the plant is where all the magic comes from. Again, smoking is great, but how about just ingesting the oils of the plant and getting it in higher, more concentrated doses? Cannabis oil, Rick Simpson Oil (RSO), Phoenix Tears, Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO),.... call it what you want but essentially it’s just the oil from the cannabis plant. Everything on this planet that has a spine also has an endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system helps to feed and regulate our immune system. When our immune system is weak, bad cells are able to multiply and diseases such as cancer happen. When we feed our system the cannabinoids it needs, our immune system does the job it’s supposed to and destroys those bad cells. Unlike chemotherapy that destroys ALL the cells in the targeted area and leaves the person with a dangerously depleted immune system, cannabis oil strengthens the immune system and lets the body destroy just the bad cells while leaving the good ones alone.
It’s not just cancer I’ve seen this oil work for. As I’ve stated a few times, I’m about seven years clean from opiates because I use oil daily. I have friends and family who have found relief from their arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, thyroid conditions, lyme disease, epilepsy, autoimmune deficiencies, and the list just goes on. It can be used straight off your finger or it can be mixed with coconut, avocado, olive, or damn near any other kind of oil and used topically as a rub or capsuled into predetermined doses to be used orally or as suppositories. Topically I have never seen ANYTHING that works better for burns. Slather some on and wrap it up. In a couple days you will see a huge difference. I just wouldn’t recommend it for open wounds, but as soon as the healing process begins, put it on everything. The only thing I can warn you about is the varying degrees of quality with cannabis oil. Just like with everything else, you get out what you put in. If the oil is really dark when you rub some on a paper, more than likely it was made from trim. If oil is made with good quality buds, it will be an amber color and you will see a good percentage on the terpene levels. If you put in the best buds, you’ll get a better medicine, you put in trim, you still get a good medicine because there are still a lot of good oil on trim, but it could have been a lot better. There are some good brands in Nevada dispensaries so shop around, and be sure to look at the lab results on each package. One gram of cannabis oil can make you about 30 rice-grain size doses equaling about a month's worth of medicine. Cannabis oil is the best way I know to take your health into your own hands. Please do some research, it has changed my life and those of people I love for nothing but the better. A good place to start is with Rick Simpson himself: www.phoenixtears.ca And, I made a video to explain how to make your own capsules that you can find at: https://youtu.be/0Co475bTb7w Rob Ruckus is a Nevada medical marijuana patient, and budtender at Inyo Fine Cannabis, a long-time Las Vegas resident and cannabis activist, star of A&E's Bad Ink, musician and host of Ruckus on the Radio.

FOCUS ON Reno Cannabis Convention
T
he Reno Cannabis Convention is a unique industry trade show that encompasses the pre-existing medical marketing and the emerging recreational cannabis community in the state of Nevada. The event serves to foster industry growth through advocacy and education of the current and future products/ services deployed in the cannabis industry to build a more efficient future landscape. The convention is based around a local or regional approach rather than a national approach which brings more meaningful connections, more targeted content, and a different way to look at the business of cannabis. Showcasing all things cannabis, the event will consist of a two-day trade show event where businesses from Nevada, the US, and abroad can showcase their products and services in a non-consumption but rather educational and business-based environment. The event is set to be held at the Whitney Peak Hotel, April 7-8, 2018. The convention will be utilizing their third-floor space to produce a trade show composed of 75+ vendors all related to the cannabis industry in some way shape or form. Exhibitor products and services will include but are not limited to technology, tools and techniques, fertilizers/ nutrients/microbes, grow mediums and soils, lights, lamps and bulbs, reflectors and hoods, ballast/electrical systems, environment control systems, monitoring and test equipment, extraction equipment, harvesting tools, grow stores, grow consultants, and many more. This will be a great networking opportunity for business professionals who are already in the industry or who wish to enter the industry. This will also be a really great opportunity for students to take advantage of. There will be a handful of startups on the trade show floor that could offer career opportunities in the lucrative cannabis industry. Concurrently running with the trade show will be two days of seminars and presentations focused around the three staples of the industry (growing, medical marijuana, and business). Keynotes on Saturday, April 7 will be Nurse Juhlzie Monteiro, RN, BSK and Heather Manus, RN from the Cannabis Nurses Network who will be presenting on how cannabis relates to children. On Sunday, the keynote will be money expert and millionaire maker, Loral Langemeier CEO and Owner of Live Out Loud, Inc., to speak about key principles of starting a cannabis business and how important proper structuring is in reaching your long-term goals. In conducting this event, The Reno Cannabis Convention actively creates an educational based environment for cannabis industry participants and the public to attend. General admission tickets will be sold via the Facebook event page and are priced for 1 and 2 day admission.
The Reno Cannabis Convention is a non-consumption and educational based event. There will be no sales of cannabis and no cannabis is permitted onsite at the Whitney Peak Hotel. Meet Reno Cannabis Convention organizer Cole Markus: VCM: What made you create the Reno Cannabis Convention? COLE: I created the Reno Cannabis Convention because I saw a lack of information surrounding cannabis in Northern Nevada. As of recently, when people talk about cannabis in Nevada the pre-existing medical market is almost always overshadowed by the recent recreational push and most of the conversations are about the Las Vegas submarket rather than a state-wide consensus. What was missing in Nevada was a platform that represents the state and all the accomplishments that have brought us to where we are today. VCM: Are you a cannabis consumer? Are you a medical patient? COLE: Yes, I’m a licensed MMJ patient in the state of Colorado. VCM: Is your background in the cannabis industry? COLE: Yes, my background combines cannabis with finance. I’ve bounced around from non-profits, business incubators, freelance work, and consulting within the industry. I’ve been fortunate enough to sit on the advisory boards of a few organizations in this space as well. VCM: What can we expect from this convention? COLE: This convention is really going to show Nevada an efficient networking and business platform that is unlike most convention models. RCC and our partners, NECANN, pride ourselves on being a local and regional convention model rather than a national one. What you can expect is a blend of quality b2b and b2c interactions that serve to be more intimate and targeted than most other shows. Our trade show floor provides a wide range of exhibiting companies from Nevada, USA, Canada, and Europe who will be showcasing their products and services and how they relate to the cannabis space. Along with our show floor, we will also be running two days of jammed packed presentation seminars with topics that encompass the topics of growing, business, and MMJ.
INDUSTRY NEWS VCM: Are you a Northern Nevada native? COLE: I was born in Florida and grew up in Colorado. Colorado is my home. My connection to Nevada comes from University of Nevada, Reno. I graduated from UNR in 2017 with a degree in Finance and Economics. VCM: Are you involved in any other cannabis industry ventures? COLE: Yes, I’m deeply invested in this industry. I own two of my own cannabis companies, Reno Cannabis Convention and FBC Holdings (Markus Investments) and I’m partnered with a Canadian group, NVS Global Health, working on some really cool projects rooted in extraction technology, tissue culture propagation, and a few other lucrative opportunities in the industry. I also keep busy with freelance financial work related to business valuation and financial strategy (projections, forecasts, budgets, etc.).
VCM: What can we expect from you in the future? More conventions? Other areas? COLE: I’m excited for the future of Nevada cannabis. First and foremost, our convention is here to stay and grow naturally with the state. We plan to initiate a rebranding phase directly after the event in April which will prepare our company for future growth and expansion in Nevada. We are actively scouting new markets for future expos and will keep our event-goers informed of any new shows that are added to our lineup. For now, what you can expect is a successful cannabis convention which will plug right into the lively Reno events culture for years to come.

TOKIN' WITH THE INFAMOUS
I
BY HOPPER THE CHRONISSEUR
BILL SHEHAN
t’s been about three years that I’ve been Tokin’ With The Infamous for Vegas Cannabis Magazine, and I’ve enjoyed every single hit. I’ve toked with everyone from Grammy nominated artists, to master growers, breeders, extract artists, cannabis patients and parents of cannabis patients, founders of multi-million dollar companies, etc. So I thought, who better than to bring it all full circle with than Bill Shehan, who first interviewed me for Smokin’ With The Stars? I was in Vegas for CHAMPS, so it made sense to sit down with the face of VCM. Bill has a lot to say, so I won’t waste your time with a lengthy intro…
Hopper: It’s great to be here at the Vegas Cannabis Magazine home base. What’s new brother?
Bill: Every month we have a new
magazine full of new products, articles and resources for you. We have a new clothing line and extract company. It's crazy how our format repeats every month, but it's always fresh and new. You know, same old, same old.
Hopper: Seems like you are a little bit bored and complacent.
Bill: Things do get a little bit
monotonous, but there are always new products and brands popping up left and right in Vegas. I love taking the photos of the products, it is always fun to get a good shot, and taste that hash as a reward. So, you are here for CHAMPS? We had a good time when I first met you out here.
Hopper: Talk about coming full
circle, how long has it been since we did the first Tokin’ With The Infamous? Back then it was called Smokin’ With The Stars.
Bill: It was issue nine, with Dizzy Wright on the cover.
Hopper: And what issue are we
on now?
Bill: We’re on issue 41 now. Hopper: Hell yeah! VCM has grown like crazy and the Vegas cannabis community is expanding quickly. Will you give the readers some insight on how both the magazine and the community have grown. Bill: Our readers are extremely
supportive and many collect our publications and tell their friends about it creating a need to continually grow to accomodate our supply and demand. The increase in recreational cannabis sales goes hand in hand with our constant need to increase our circulation.
Hopper: It’s great to see how in touch you are with the community and the patients. Bill: I appreciate our readers,
contributors and advertisers. The people that know the value of what we’re doing. Not just the time, but how much it costs. I don’t have a salary, my wife doesn’t have a salary. We’re patients. I’ve got people who come to me for help because they’ve received these death sentences from doctors. It’s pitiful that traditional medicine holds thousands of cannabis related patents yet many physicians deny that cannabis has any true medicinal benefits.
Hopper: I’ve seen it with
patients myself. It’s horrible. When I had a collective, I had patients who would come in, just to say goodbye.
Bill: People need it, not just
dabbing or smoking like I do, but they really need the oil. My wife uses cannabis oil to help alleviate her asthma symptoms and as a sleep aid. This is part of the reason we started the magazine.
Hopper: Stephanie rocks, by the way, I’ve just gotta say that.
Bill: Stephanie is the fucking
best. We’ve been married for over 7,500 days.
Hopper: That’s dope, I know I couldn’t do any of this without my lady. Bill: For what it’s worth, I’d
52
probably be killing somebody right now if it weren’t for her. Not literally, but you know what I’m saying. Stephanie is my road, if I don’t see her ahead of
VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM
me, I’m driving off the road into the fucking fog. I have three daughters, and there’s been times that having daughters makes you want to change men’s minds about what they’re seeing. You can’t change a person’s mind about how beautiful or attractive something is, but you can change their mind about what they do about it, you can change their mind about how they bite their tongue, or they keep their head down and show respect.
Hopper: What makes VCM stand out over and above all of the other cannabis publications? Bill: You know what, I’m gonna
go ahead and say it. I do. No other magazine has a Bill Shehan saying “Extra! Extra! Read All About It!”. All kidding aside, we are here to bring awareness and information to the public. I love meeting the people that read Vegas Cannabis and collect LidPins. I enjoy helping people get the information about cannabinoids and terpenes that can alleviate what specifically ails them. I also am not afraid to call people out when they are doing wrong or need an attitude adjustment.
Hopper: So what can VCM readers expect next?
Bill: They can expect a coloring book in April.
Hopper: Are you going to get together with Trog for that?
Bill: Yeah, Trog has another
two coloring book covers. Trog’s cool as shit. He has taught me alot about my job, and has been an artistic anchor, a pillar for our publications.
Hopper: I’ve been doing strain reviews for years, and you do strain reviews… Bill: I don’t do strain reviews, I
do strain introductions. It’s very different.
Hopper: How is it different?
\\ #702VCM \\ VEGAS CANNABIS
Bill: If I were to review strains, I
would be grading them. But the way I introduce a strain is by first taking a nice, crisp photo with a white background. I try each product and I let our readers know what I think about them. I also ask for the lab results for each product I try so I can include more than the state required top three terpenes. This is important, and often overlooked information that can be the deciding factor when recommending strains for certain illnesses.
Hopper: Okay then, so who's got the best weed in Vegas?
Bill: Ah, the million dollar
question! It really is impossible to narrow it down to one dispensary or cultivator. I'm a hash head so I do have a few favorite brands blasting some of the best sauce in the country. In no specific order, this is what's worth writing home about, Green Therapeutics, Green Life Productions, Tahoe Hydro, Giddy Up, Kabunky, HSH and Remedy.
Hopper: All of your content is original, do you have any advice for aspiring journalists?
Bill: Yah, don't bury your head in
the sand and wait for your fucking prom. Get out there and do shit instead of taking it for granted. It's easy when you write about something you love so find your passion and bury your head into that.
Hopper: Any shout outs? Bill: I’d like to thank my wife,
Stephanie, who is an absolute ideal companion, teaching me to love, and for her willingness to overlook my obnoxious ridiculousness. I’d like to thank my daughters, Abby, Bayli, and Cortney for loving me silly and for making my beard white. I love my girls. Follow Bill on IG @vegascannabis Follow Hopper on IG @hopper448

Dispensaries PURE TONIC/DESERT GROWN Lemon Meringue Shatter DESERT GROWN FARMS Cherry Champagne
By: Josh Ranck I’ll toast to this strain! Not only does it have plenty of THC, it’s got plenty of limonene. THC is great, but THC and terpenes together are where it’s at! Ahhh, sweet-sweet limonene. Not only does it give this strain a generous nose appeal, it also brings the elevated yet relaxed feelings that make limonene such a popular terpene. This is one of the more gentle sativas I’ve tried in a while, and one that I’ll return to again. Lovingly handled, moist & fresh, and glazed with trichomes, Cherry Champagne is a strong offering from The Facility. If this is an indication of what’s to come, I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for their future strain drops! THC- 24.9% Limonene- 17.28mg/g a-Pinene- 2.31mg/g Myrcene- 1.85mg/g
A solid 70%er as far as THC is concerned, this firm shatter is ready to spin your head like a Whirly Bird. Twirly, swirly, BURP. Shit, I’m a madman on this hash. If I bashed against the wall I’d probably get right back up, and start zooming again. My regular knee pain has subsided as well. My head feels like it just popped out of the ground like an emu or ostrich. I’m not that hungry from it though, and that about sums up the Lemon Meringue. Yo, go to Essence if you want pleasant presents. THC-70.2% Terpinolene- 7mg/g Caryophyllene- 6mg/g Myrcene- 3mg/g a-Pinene-2mg/g b-Pinene- 2mg/g
PURE TONIC/DESERT GROWN Black Afghan Wax
By: Josh Ranck Black Afghan Wax might be the perfect indica concentrate. This sugary wax is firm enough to handle easily, but melts right down into the most gorgeous bubbly syrup in my banger. Careful, this one gets right on top of you, but in the best way possible. That heavy eye, time dragging, blissful indica experience sets right in as you’re blowing this one out! A nice amount of pinene gives this dank wax a strong scent that also can help asthmatics breathe easier. Low myrcene won’t drag your ass. Indica fans, you’ve been notified. THC- 63% a-Pinene- 8mg/g Bisabolol- 2mg/g Limonene- 2mg/g Myrcene- 1.5mg/g

PRODUCTS DESERT GROWN FARMS Pennywise RSO
This looks more like distillate, but we are going to make capsules out of it anyway. RSO should be as dark as tar, and taste sort of bland. This oil is bright and tastes sweet. In case you were unaware, ingesting cannabis is the best way to get the most medicinal benefits from the plant. Ingestion will help your body on a more permanent level than smoking or dabbing because it promotes exfoliation of bad cells, allowing your healthy cells to reproduce. The problem with cancer and bad cells, is that the body reproduces inflamed damaged cells, and it spreads. This is a great THC/CBD ratio at 1:1. Let’s see if we can control my wife’s asthma with it. THC- 362.6mg CBD- 336.75mg
CITY TREES Jack Herer Disposable C CELL Vape Pen
By: Josh Ranck Terpy and clean. Discreet and powerful. Simple and effective. There are plenty more attributes I could use to describe City Trees’ newest release. I love disposable pens for the convenience of not having to charge a base all the time. There’s nothing worse than having a quick moment to sneak in a sesh, only to have no battery! C CELL eliminates that worry. Plus, the draw is rich, and you’ll be blowing thick, rig-worthy clouds with every pull. The next time you need a discrete, powerful disposable, give C CELL a try. Forget about those fruit-flavored, terpless disposables flooding dispensaries, this is the real deal! THC- 66.07% Ocimene- 15.2mg/g Myrcene- 4.7mg/g b-Pinene- 0.8mg/g
VEGAS CANNAGARS Rose-Gar
The Rose-Gar by Vegas Cannagars was a trip to evaluate, considering the fact that I was inhaling cannabis wrapped in a pinkish purple rose petal for the first time. I wanted to evaluate the taste of this beautiful work of art, so I closed my eyes and tried to isolate the specific taste of the pink petals. It will be difficult for you to distinguish any major differences between the taste of these organic edible rose petal wraps and a hemp wrap, until about halfway through when the Cannagar Organitip drips rose hips on your sugary lips. All Vegas Cannagars are custom made and hand-rolled by a true artisan. The rose petals used in this wrap are classified as a biological, organic edible and adhere to the strictest standards, using absolutely no pesticides or unnatural additives. This is well worth the experience.
CANNADERM/HSH Lemongrass Body Cream
Rejuvenate your skin and replenish the moisture that this dry ass desert sucks from us. THC is non-psychedelic as a topical, and won’t show up in a drug test. Drug test? I’ll pass. I usually do pretty well on most tests, even without studying. I can usually deduce multiple-choice answers down to a 50/50 chance. Well you’re not going to be tested here, so just relax. But there is a much greater than 50% chance you will like this medicinal cream. Lemongrass is a medicinal plant that helps treat skin infections and is commonly used in hot tea to help digestion. You won’t be swallowing this, but get it on your skin, and get the moisture your body needs. Then, smoke HSH weed when in need. CBD- 5.35mg THC- 1.47mg

HSH Calico Jack Concentrate
I’m a genetic chimera with two DNA’s, and my hair is naturally spotted. Most of you are sayin’, “Bullshit!,” but it’s true. I have another characteristic trait called mosaicism, which gives me calico cat-like features. Having multi-colored patches of hair, I learned not to care when people talked about me and stared at my spotted head. I don’t lose my grip on life and whip out my knife. I just sip on Calico Jack and slip all the way back into bed. Damn, 8mg of myrcene feels like my pockets are filled with lead. Your red eye sockets already read about the mosaic hair strands on my head looking like the Calico Jack strain. We rode this train full circle so don’t complain, Jack. By Mike Paladino So there I was, in the heart of the Vegas Cannabis Magazine's headquarters about to dab on True Blue. The sweet, tangy berry smell was making me salivate in anticipation and I knew as soon as we lit the torch, that it was lit. So I picked up our trusty tool, jam packed with that sugary sweet oh-sosavory dab and hit the rig. It went down smoother than the cream cheese on your bagel. I exhaled into the room feeling free of any and all anxiety, looked up with what must have been a very stoned expression on my face and could only say, “Damn, that was the shit!”
HSH Apollo 11 Concentrate
HSH Ting Concentrate
What a beautiful Ting this is. Sit back, and sip on this sweet Caribbean sugar, without the calories of its grapefruit flavored predecessor. Ting by HSH drenched my lungs, and quenched the desires of my thirsty brain, and left this bright orange stain. I wasn’t gonna rhyme, but i can’t refrain. If you don’t like my style, don’t complain. Try this myrcene to ease your pain. Then, maybe my shit wouldn’t seem so mundane to ya, Jane. Want me to serve you up, and make it rain? Or, you just wanna keep your shit plain?

Extracts! Extracts! Read all about it! Here you go, programs here! Getch’ya souvenir programs now, before they’re gone. Scoop one up and see what all the fuss is about. I feel splendid after a sip of wine and the lion’s share of Xtra Cheese hash I just smashed. The euphoric combination of limonene and myrcene is fun and interesting, pushing me down (myrcene), pulling me back up (limonene) again. I have quite an appetite for the destruction of concentrates. I’m not one who sits and contemplates whether I should, or if it could be too large. I just barge on in, and score a win for my lungs. HSH is top shelf shit.

We are fortunate to work with many brands who introduce products here in this section, which fills up the satchel pretty full. But the way we dab around here, our monthly stock gets depleted easily, and we need to load up on more good stuff. Their Fruit Salad Shatter is extracted from a blend of fine herbs. GT Chemdog
By J-Bird from Jenny’s Had the opportunity today to sample Green Therapeutics Chemdawg. Its strong OG pungent scent was laced with hints of diesel. I love that stinky earthy smell. The taste was like linen and wasn’t harsh on the lungs. Got a nice tingle and body high from it. I would recommend this as a nice hybrid for a daytime smoke. Doesn’t make you feel lethargic, nor do I feel the need to eat the whole kitchen! I am definitely going to try more from Green Therapeutics in the future.
Don’t be discouraged by the low THC. Platinum Cookies was arguably the best tasting herb introduced this month. And frankly, I didn’t notice much of a difference between how high I was from this 18% THC, compared to other strains recording as much as 10% higher. This strain’s lineage is Durban Poison and OG Kush. This active bush will lift you off your tush, and won’t turn you to mush. Get that shit! It’s live and wicked. GT Lemon OG
By Josh Ranck Good old OG has come a long way since it landed on the pheno scene so long ago. One perfect example is this citrusy Lemon OG by Green Therapeutics. It’s dank like an OG, but has a zing that’s best described as a fine upgrade to a classic model. The high is mellow and smooth, unlike the scent, which overwhelms the second you crack open the stunning gold-label jar. Seriously, their packaging design is on point, and so is their product. This flavor profile begs a tasting pairing. I’m thinking citrus-marinated ceviche and a crisp Mexican beer with lime would be perfect after what I just smoked! THC- 20.7% cis-Nerolidol- 2.3mg/g trans-Nerolidol- 2.3mg/g Limonene- 1.8mg/g
GT Lemon Heads
This is the strongest flower we blazed this month. It smells like clean, sweet lemon and tastes amazing and zippy. This strain is a great analgesic, just loaded with terpinolene. This strain will fuck your shit up. I’m in love with everything Green Therapeutics has shown us thus far. They run their own production facility now, and are about to launch a few unique products using these bomb cannabis flowers. Stay tuned, or get tuned up. Broken up into 24 portions just to slow me down, I devoured the treat in about 6 man-sized bites. I love the way it melts into a mouthful of thick, warm, chocolate plasma. I’m 220 lbs. and I could have eaten 2 whole bars without a single hitch in my giddyup. I have a sweet tooth and Evergreen’s Milk Chocolate Crunch Bar satisfied my spoiled craving. CANNAGARS ALL MY NEW ROLE MODELS ARE WOMEN Sorry boys, but they’re out-hustling, out-performing, and out-innovating us at every turn. According to Marijuana Business Daily’s 2017 report, “Women & Minorities in the Marijuana Industry,” women hold 9.1% more executive cannabis positions than in other major industries. Here’s another good one for you: More than 25% of new canna-businesses have women stakeholders. And, one more: 40% of these women-owned businesses are planning to expand into new markets within the next year. While these are national averages, you don’t have to look far to see this surge right here in Las Vegas. Meet Michelle Allred (better known to her friends and followers as Redeye), founder and owner of Vegas Canagars, one of the newest and most sought-after products in the valley. Her first three products - The Perfecto, The Rose-Gar, and the Cannarillo, have just hit dispensaries in limited release.
top-shelf masterpieces ... and she’s just getting started. I sat with Michelle in her production facility, where she affixed labels to her Rose-Gar tubes and sealed the top with hot wax. “I’ve been making cannagars for years. It started in 2013 in Arizona when I was working for a cultivation,” she tells me. “We had everything on hand to make them, so we had a little in-house contest to see who could make the best one, and I won.” Not only did she win, she discovered a talent for crafting cannagars that has taken her on quite a journey. She spent years perfecting her techniques until she finally had her first product ready to introduce to market.
What’s a cannagar? At its most basic, a cannagar is simply a cannabis cigar. It can be wrapped in rolling papers, tobacco leaf, or cannabis leaves.
Her first order of 20 cannagars sold slowly, only moving about ten a week. But then the community caught on. Her sales boomed until she was selling 500-600 cannagars a month. When the orders started flooding in, she met with the cultivation owners and asked for a raise. She wasn’t just denied, she was sued by the cultivation for the ownership of the proprietary techniques and tools that she’d created herself.
But Michelle is anything but basic. Her boutique products are artisan quality,
Michelle won that lawsuit, but at a great cost. Jobless and in deep debt, she
was recruited by another cultivation in Humboldt, which disbanded shortly after she arrived. And once again in Oregon, where greed and distrust between the owners forced Michelle to make a very hard decision. She could keep bouncing from state to state, business to business, hoping to find some permanence, or she could open her own business and create that permanence herself. Based on the negative history she’s had working under other canna-businesses (she was told twice she couldn't’ have a particular position strictly because she was a woman!), it was time to take her future into her own hands. After serious deliberation, Michelle decided on Las Vegas as the ideal location for her brand, but she had no idea the challenges that doing canna-business in Nevada would present. It took her more than five months to secure a licensed facility from which to operate. Plus, she had to refine her processes to meet Nevada’s cannabis requirements. Perhaps worst of all, she had to give up the brand that she’d built over the years – the brand with which she won her 2017 High Times Cup Award.
Vegas Cannagars, formerly known as Redeye Cannagars, was forced to change their brand name to meet state marketing requirements. Coming to Nevada cost Michelle so much, that basically, she was starting over from scratch. She’s invested thousands and thousands of dollars and months and months of time to get to this moment in time. And it’s finally all coming together for Michelle and Vegas Cannagars. Her first three products are in high demand among dispensaries. So much so, that Cody Nelson, member of the production management team with Exhale says, “We have a huge issue because we can’t produce enough to meet demand. Especially when the dispensaries say they’ll take as many as we can send them.” The reason for the bottleneck is that it’s just her and a few select part-time team members in the production room creating these cannagars, and she can barely meet demand. Don’t worry, she’s getting some help. In fact, she will be officially expanding her team in the next few months to start producing at scale to meet dispensary demand. The main problem with scaling quickly is that these techniques aren’t learned overnight, and the cannagars themselves need up to five weeks to cure properly. Like I said, these are artisan products that take time, skill, and patience to produce. I was at Jardin for the release of The Perfecto, and based on the community response, people crave these types of specialty products. I asked Tracy Chavez why she came in specifically to get The Perfecto. Her response: “It’s stunning, innovative, and also
unique. People who have been smoking their whole life haven’t seen anything like this. That’s why I came in today.” Another patron said basically the same thing, that it was something he’d never seen, that he’d never tried an infused product, and that’s why he was buying one. Jardin staff member, Elijah Mollet speaking about The Perfecto: “It’s a unique new product that we gracefully got the chance to represent first to market.” And that’s just one of the many products that Vegas Cannagars is releasing. Michelle has about 10 new unique products slated for release over the coming months. Plus, like 40% of the other womenowned canna-businesses out there, she’s also looking to move into new markets. Partnering with industry leaders like Jardin has proven very valuable for Vegas Cannagars. In fact, you might remember seeing 2 Chainz smoke one of Michelle’s hand-rolled cannagars on VICELAND’S, “The Most Expensivest.” She wouldn’t tell me specifically what product she has planned next, but if it’s anything like what’s she’s brought to market so far, you can be sure it’s going to be gorgeous and innovative. Make sure to follow Michelle as she shows just what women are capable of in this thriving new female-driven cannabis landscape.

HIPPY TRIPS HIPPY BAKER So you don’t want to smoke weed anymore. You’ve decided that it’s healthier to vaporize it. Ok. Load up the chamber of this Hippy Baker with your favorite ground-up flower, and push the power button five times like you have OCD. That’s it. Now you watch the LED screen climb in temperature until it matches your preferred setting, and changes from “HEAT” to “WARM”. And, it’s ready to hit. Now you are vaporizing cannabis instead of smoking it. I prefer the temperature setting to be on the highest for herbs. It’s not oil. Heat it up, Mr. Hippy Baker Man. Bake me my weed as fast as you can. Just be careful you don’t burn your lips, or we might go back to bong rips and joints. hippytrips.com $109.99

MARLEY NATURAL GLASS & WALNUT BUBBLER Nothin but the best! This bubbler is a work of art, and it hits strong. Impressive, the way it’s built with threaded, thick borosilicate glass fitted to screw nicely into the wood component. The Marley Bubbler has a low fulcrum point and extra chunky glass, so it’s not likely to tip over and break if you bump it. Don’t overfill it your bubbler, and poke it clean in between bowls to keep the smokey clouds flowing all night.

any cannabis companies and people came to Nevada from Colorado. One such company is Franklin BioScience, the makers of Lucky Edibles and Altus. We began distributing their products back in September and have since also began selling their products to dispensaries throughout the state. The team at FBS have a hands-on approach and assist our sales reps during pop-ups and industry outings. It’s always nice to work with people you also enjoy hanging out with after hours and that certainly is this group; fun loving, professional with great business acumen. Learn a little more about the team we are grateful to consider our friends in the biz through our interview with Cyrus, Franklin BioScience president.
Focus: What is the company’s focus for the future?
Farudi: Our focus has always been on quality and consistency in our products and providing a great place to work for our employees. That focus doesn’t change moving forward. We are continuing to hire great people to add to our amazing team, and we have a lot of new products in
Focus: Tell us a little about your company
Cyrus Farudi: Franklin BioScience is a wellness-focused flower and edibles producer. We offer products in dispensaries all across the state under two different brands, Lucky and Altus. We hold both medical and recreational licenses and have been involved in the Nevada cannabis industry from the very beginning. We just hired Mark Friedman, an industry vet from the first days of legal cannabis in Colorado, to be our new National Sales Director. We pride ourselves on our experience.
Focus: What makes Altus and Lucky products different from others in the market?
Farudi: We were one of the first groups in the country to install a vertical, all LED growing system in our facility, and as a result, produce very high quality flower with massive terpenes. We recently had a strain test over 10% for myrcene. We pride ourselves on only using flower in our pre-rolls and never fill with shake or trim. We also use our own homegrown flower in all of our edible products so we can be 100% confident in their quality and purity.
Focus: Do you have a favorite?
Farudi: My favorite is our Blueberry Acai gummy. It’s a one to one ratio of THC and CBD with 5mgs of each and tastes great! But our Nevada GM, David Taeb, would go with our Altus Premium PreRolls, because he hates the shake and trim used for most joints on the market and we only use flower in ours.

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO GROW In the new world of recreational, adult use cannabis, many 21+ year old adults across the US can grow their own cannabis at home without any license, applications, fees, or doctor visits. Growing your own cannabis gives you complete control over what goes into your herb as well as letting you pick what strains you want to consume, not just what your local dispensary wants to grow. Cannabis can also be grown for significantly less money at home when compared to purchasing at retail prices. While there is an initial investment in growing gear, one flowering cycle can pay for the entire up-front setup cost. The first step to grow your own is selecting the correct gear for your new garden. This article will help you select the right size tent and gear for your first garden, without focusing on exactly what brands to purchase. While there are many ways to set up an indoor growing area, using a purpose-built tent as your growing space is usually the easiest way for beginners to get started. Most cannabis strains are sensitive to the length of the night (dark period) received every day. The length of the night controls whether the plant grows vegetatively or flowers, so cannabis needs to be grown and flowered in a space where you can have complete control over
74
the light. Tents provide the easiest way to completely control the light your plants will receive. The first step to setting up your own indoor garden is identifying where you can fit a growing area. When gardening indoors, you are trying to recreate nature inside a small space in your home- not a trivial task, so to make your job as easy as possible, select a space with the following in mind: • The area must have adequate ventilation to deal with excess heat and humidity from your garden
BY KEVIN FRENDER AND NOAH MILLER
preventing problems with bugs and other contaminants. • Know your local laws – with the patchwork of laws surrounding Cannabis in the US, it is critical to know your local ordinances and laws and it is your responsibility to understand what you can and cannot grow in your specific situation and specific location.
• You can bring water to your garden in buckets but for anything other than a small garden, having running water and a drain nearby makes gardening much easier.
Once you have located where you will be setting up your garden, it’s time to get out the tape measure: you need to know how large an area you have for your tent. Grow tents come in a variety of sizes, from around 2’ X 2’ up to 10’ X 10’. Regardless of how much space you have, it is best to start small, with a 5’x5’ or smaller tent. Larger tents require more lights and other setup costs, as well as more care and attention. Starting too large will often result in frustration and failure. You will also need to make sure you have adequate room to access your tent appropriately. For a 3’X3’ or smaller tent, you can generally access the entire space from the front- but with 4’x4’ and larger tents you will want to also be able to access it from the back or even the side.
• Try to locate your garden where it can be properly secured. Limiting access to minors is often a legal requirement and simply good practice. Limiting access will also go a long way towards
Once you know the dimensions of your space, it is best to consider what your goal is. Most growers consider what they are looking to harvest per flower cycle. If you are growing for
• Having enough vertical space for your plants to grow under a light. Light is critical, so try to avoid any space under 7’ tall, as many tents are 7+ feet tall. • You’ll need access to enough power for the garden you are setting up – keep in mind you will need to power lights, air filtration, oscillating fans, etc.
only yourself and you are not going to be consuming with friends or a significant other, you may only need an ounce a month or even less. If you are a heavier consumer or have a lot of friends you spend time with that also enjoy cannabis, then you may want a quarter pound or more per month. Once you have an idea of what you want per month, you should multiply that by three, since you can expect to harvest about every three months. For example, if you think you want 2 ounces a month, you will want to plan for at least 6 ounces per harvest. Your grow space will somewhat dictate what your yield will be, but the power of your light is just as critical. Depending on the light level you provide, you can get 4 ounces out of a 3’X3’ tent, or you can get 40+ ounces out of the same 3’X3’ tent with enough light and proper garden maintenance. Every light performs differently and there are a lot on the market, so let’s pick one high-quality LED grow light to look at: Black Dog LED. The Black Dog LED PhytoMAX-2 line ranges from 210 watts up to 1050 watts of actual power in 210-watt increments, so the options are 210, 420, 630, 840, and 1050 watts. Assuming the light is being used by a good grower, in a good environment, with good genetics, the 210 watt
VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM
light should provide a half pound (8 ounces) of trimmed, dried, high quality Cannabis. Each step up from there would add a half pound of expected yield. This means the PhytoMAX-2 400 would likely provide about one pound (16 ounces) of finished flower, on up to the PhytoMAX-2 1000 which should provide 2.5 pounds of flower.

SMOKES GIFTS ACCESSORIES “Not Your GLASS Neighborhood Smoke Shop
It should be noted that these are estimates and the lights can yield even more. The PhytoMAX-2 1000 has been documented numerous times delivering over 3.5 pounds in a single harvest. With your dimensions and goals in mind, you should be able to determine the size tent and power of the light you are looking for. There are many other items to consider, but the tent size and light are the key components for determining yield. Black Dog LED has also made it easy for first-time growers to get started by creating comprehensive grow kits with everything you need besides the seed, soil, and the nutrients. Get that grow kit and start exercising your right to grow your own! Kevin Frender and Noah Miller are the co-owners of Black Dog LED located in Boulder, Colorado. >>> Learning BY WILLIE SPEARMINT
Welcome to March, the month of midterms, then spring break before final exams. This May thousands of Nevada students will graduate from college as the class of 2018, prepared to begin their professional careers. Their academic experience shapes their professional value, determined by the application of acquired knowledge and skill in their chosen field. Some graduates will enter Nevadas cannabis industry and each year that number will grow. By seeking out specialized knowledge, students will be better equipped to launch their cannabis careers. When the cannabis industry arrived in Nevada it brought an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Many people are speaking openly about marijuana for the first time in their life. Longtime flower smokers and eaters learn new methods of consumption. Regulated testing provides terpene profiles for those who learn the terminology to interpret the lab results. Although cannabis has been legalized, there are still fines and laws one must know to avoid arrest and criminal charges. The local community’s interest in cannabis information gave rise to a variety of cannabis classes, courses and workshops. Some come from out of town and charge a hefty sum for an intensive 2-day course completed over a weekend. Some dispensaries hold weekly or monthly classes educating consumers on products they sell and offer a discount for attending. Other classes teach about trimming, how to work for a cultivator or obtain credentials to work at a dispensary. Another class teaches how to become a budtender sales associate proficient in customer service and retail sales. These opportunities are great for those seeking entry level positions but college students want to learn how their degree is applicable to this industry. Last month KTNV Channel 13 news aired a segment on a cannabis class being taught at Nevada State College (NSC). The nursing class teaches students the effects different cannabis products have on the human body. The class also discusses the ethics of consuming cannabis as a medical professional. “We want to make sure that we’re at our best when we’re in the workplace,” said one student. This specialized knowledge gives these students an advantage when competing for a nursing position in a legal state like Nevada. This is an example of how students can incorporate cannabis education to enhance their academic experience. “It’s exciting, we’re right at the beginning of where the medicinal purposes [of marijuana] are going to go for the future,” said Susan Growe, assistant professor of the NSC school of nursing.
78
When the discussion of including cannabis in the curriculum comes up, the most common rebuttal is that schools will risk losing federal funding. NSC has been successfully teaching nursing students about cannabis and in October 2016, UNLV offered a public policy course on cannabis discussing how the industry got to this point
and changes legalization would bring to Nevada and the rest of the country. Not to be out done by Nevada, Northern Michigan University now offers a degree in marijuana and received over 700 applications for the program for next semester. None of these schools are jeopardizing their federal funding because none of these classes require students to handle or work directly with cannabis. As cannabis college classes slowly begin appearing across the country, it was only a matter of time before the question of cannabis related internships came up. Completing an internship is often a prerequisite to earning a degree. There is no substitute for receiving on the job training and obtaining hands on experience while exploring the work environment of a student’s chosen career. To the untrained eye the cannabis industry is comprised of cultivators, productions, labs and dispensaries. A closer look reveals a broader spectrum of job fields connecting with cannabis and creating new career opportunities; from journalism and the many marijuana print publications, to marketing and creating brand awareness through advertisements, search engine optimization and reaching an online audience with social media management, the laws and regulations that govern the industry, accounting and managing finances, and the list goes on. Although this work is cannabis related it isn’t working directly with cannabis, leaving room for internships. In 2015, NSC student Deuvall Dorsey completed Nevada’s first cannabis related paid internship as the personal assistant to industry leader Jason Sturtsman. Although he received no college credit, the experience altered the trajectory of his career. In 2017, after moving on to UNLV, he completed the second cannabis related internship, this time for college credit. He worked as a media apprentice at the offices of Freedom Leaf, observing the ins and outs of a cannabis publication, learning graphic and web design and expanding his professional network. After helping another student establish a similar internship he took on the role of Nevada College Cannabis Internship Coordinator. “Navigating red tape to receive approval from 3 different professors and department chairs in 3 different years at 2 different colleges gives me confidence in my ability to take on the challenges of the position,” said Deuvall.
STUDENT OF THE MONTH: DEUVALL DORSEY March Vegas Cannabis student of the month is Deuvall Dorsey, President of the UNLV Rebels Cannabis Awareness Network. He has a long history of educating academic institutions and their students about the cannabis industry. VCM salutes his ongoing effort to break barriers on college campuses and destigmatize cannabis in an academic setting. Find out if your business qualifies to offer a student internship by emailing Deuvall at: Dorsem1@unlv.Nevada. edu.

AARON NEIMAN HERITAGE TATTOO
Tucked away at the corner of Sunset & Sandhill, just east of the airport, is a holistic hideaway where you can find some of the finest artists in Las Vegas. A little oasis of ink called Heritage Tattoo.
Walking into Heritage is like stepping onto the set of a movie. The eclectic décor seems ever so strategically placed. The music sets the mood. The vibe is authentic. The atmosphere creates such a relaxing and perfectly distracting ambiance. From the moment you step through the red split door, to the thank you card that is hand sealed/stamped with red wax & logo, attention is in all the details. While in the market for new ink I wanted to do a little research on tattoo artists as well as feel out the energy of a few shops. Eventually I came across Aaron Neiman’s Instagram and it didn’t take long after looking through his beautiful profile for me to know he was whom I wanted to schedule with. If a picture is worth a thousand words, his work is worth a thousand and one. One thing in particular that caught my attention was the array of other artists in the industry he has tattooed throughout his career. From the first time I walked into Heritage Tattoo
for my consultation I felt at home. The lighting in the front waiting room paired with the particularly comfortable and stylish seating caught my attention; immediately it was unlike any other shop. With me I had a sketch for an idea of what I wanted. Aaron completely reincarnated my vision of my tattoo with his own drawing and executed it beyond what I originally imagined. Even though I have had multiple tattoos previous to his work it was refreshing to feel as if it was my first piece again. Aaron became as equally invested in my tattoo as I was, which diminished any previous nerves I had about trusting a new artist. His ability to engage so mindfully into each specific piece magnifies his talent. Over tattoo sessions I have had the opportunity to get to know the artist behind the ink and the creative genius responsible for essentially the coziest tattoo shop in Las Vegas. The passion that runs through Aaron’s blood is apparent in all his endeavors, it translates to everything he touches and is beyond tattooing. The attention he places into detail is finer than the strokes of his paintbrush. It’s in the interior design of his shop, the grooves of wooden canvases, and inked on the bodies of many people. Recently he has been working on a ‘Smoker Girl’ series of paintings that feature a feminine energy with a bohemian theme and accompanied of course by a hint of cannabis. It was comforting to be a smoker girl myself and be able to walk into my appointment high and feel zero judgment. Las Vegas is lucky to have such a humbly talented artist and human being amongst us in Aaron Neiman. His hard work and passion yielded a dream tattoo shop filled with the most uniquely talented artists in the valley and definitely has filled the valley with art. The energy between the staff is loving and lively. Every time I visit the shop I look forward to my overall experience of spending the day in a fun place with fantastic people, just as much as I look forward to my ink. Here's what Aaron had to say about art, cannabis and the opening of his shop Heritage Tattoo: Rebecka: Have you been artistic your whole life? Aaron: For as long as I can remember I was always creating something. My mother tells me that I was constantly drawing something. Rebecka: What/who compelled you to start tattooing? Aaron: I’ve wanted to be a tattoo artist since i was a preteen. I used to hang out at a Trust Tattoo owned by Jason Grant, in my home town until he got sick of me begging for an apprenticeship and allowed me to get my start in the field.

Rebecka: When did you open Heritage Tattoo and what propelled that decision?
VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM
\\ #702VCM \\ VEGAS CANNABIS
Aaron: My wife, Janell and I opened the shop in 2012. It has always been a dream of mine to open my own place where I could have my friends work for a fair cost and focus on the art and the craft and not so much about making money. We wanted something that felt more like family and less like work. Rebecka: Does cannabis affect your creativity? If so which strains do you prefer? Aaron: Cannabis is an integral component of my working process. Indica frees my mind of the daily stresses of life so that I can be more creative and sativa keeps me driven and moving forward. Obviously my creative process is not dependent on it but it definitely makes the process easier at times. Medicinally, it also helps me overcome the intense body strain that tattooing over the years has caused to my back, neck and wrists. Rebecka:Where did the inspiration for the interior of the shop come from? Aaron: The name “Heritage set the tone. I was apprenticed to have faith and trust in the history and roots of the craft. We felt that the shop should be a place that felt like home with a historical feel and a professional atmosphere. We wanted it to be a place where the professional population would feel comfortable. Something warm and inviting and non-aggressive. Rebecka: What is your favorite artistic outlet? Aaron: I enjoy painting, mostly in acrylic and on wood. I have always felt an affinity to natural canvases. Which is also ironic since I also work on skin. I also love taking photos and integrating art into every facet of my life including my home. I have two entire walls in my outdoor spaces at my home that have murals from Brett Rosepiler and Anthony Ortega. Follow Aaron on IG: @aaronneiman @heritagetattoolv

beauty and this we have to show. It's a beauty that doesn't belong to just us, but to everyone. I think art is art when it's for the welfare of mankind, and not for individuals or privileged groups. It's for mankind. Only then do I considerate it art. Otherwise it’s just another trade.
VCM: Where would you like
to see your art displayed?
MOHAN: My art is not this so-called art where it is a decorative or a commercial thing. Mine Is to take you on a journey within yourself, further out than the eyes can see; imagination. All I want to motivate is imagination. At the moment I think the ones who are able to imagine are students of neuroscience and cognitive science students. If my work can be displayed in places where students are, I would be the most grateful. I'd like to be the wind beneath everyone's wings, but young, free minds seem to relate to my paintings, I am 72 now. Young minds can relate to my paintings because they are still fresh in this world. VCM: How do you come up
with new subjects for the next painting?
MOHAN: When I’m working
this anticipation gives me calmness, peace and patience, I don't have to rush to see what the end product would be because it's a strange thing. Excuse me for saying this but, after I finish weaving each painting, I flip it over and I am surprised. Believe you me, that surprise invites me to other thoughts on other paintings that I would like to do. It gives me other ideas.
VCM: Why do you paint? MOHAN: I paint because it is the only way I think I can let my steam out. Whatever negative forces are in me they all get subdued or they vanish once I start painting. My paintings are collector ripe, but I don’t paint so that a gallery can sell them to a collector. My paintings have a very personal essence to them and if the person, whether it be a layman or a collector who sees my paintings can feel the essence, then so be it. VCM: Would you consider your work abstract? MOHAN: I don't know what you would call my work, it's just imagination woven with energy.
VCM: Do you smoke cannabis and if so how does it influence your artwork? MOHAN: I have been a medical marijuana patient for a long time. Smoking cannabis keeps me at ease. It takes away any stress so that I can practice my craft in a state of nothingness.
Mohan is exhibiting his art at the Mix it Up Gallery in the Arts Factory beginning March 1st. Follow Mohan: IG @mohanartlajolla or mohanlajolla.com Photo Credit: JDixx Photography

here are many amazing all natural products on the market today thanks to consumer interest and advocacy for cleaner, non-toxic products, and with the growing public acceptance of recreational marijuana, hemp and CBD oil products have made its way into the beauty industry. This amazing oil isn’t new to the industry and many insiders have been using CBD and hemp oils for years. A common concern from new users to hemp and CBD products is that it will have the same psychoactive effects as ingesting or smoking it. This is incorrect. CBD is the nonpsychoactive aspect of the cannabis plant, but still offers the antiinflammatory and anti-anxiety benefits.
throughout the skin, making CBD a potential therapy for a range of conditions, from dry skin to skin cancer. Because it is applied right to trouble areas, the CBD hemp oil works directly where needed most and isn’t absorbed into the bloodstream. Unfortunately so many cosmetics and skin products contain mostly toxins and chemicals which also absorb into our skin and cause allergic reactions and sensitivity. Being educated and informed will help you make the best choices for you and family.
What makes these oils so beneficial and unique are the way they work with our bodies when absorbed into the skin. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and since it is porous, it absorbs whatever you put on it. Cannabinoid receptors are located
Vitamins C and E protect broken or split ends and protect skin and hair against damage from the sun as antioxidants keep free radicals from damaging collagen and elastin. Hemp is ubiquitous in hair care because it is so rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
Like all the organs in the body, vitamins and minerals are essential to their care and proper function. Hemp Oil not only contains CBD but other essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, proteins and fatty acids.
B complex vitamins are part of the construction process of skin, hair and nails. Low levels of B vitamins in a diet can lead to dermatitis and hair loss. Many people suffering from anemia may experience these issues. Now that you have some background of the benefits of hemp here are a few products that you can implement into your life. ON THE ROAD WITH
On February 1st, I received a call from a St. Vincent government representative asking if I had a passport and the ability to test in remote locations. I had no passport, but yes, I could test in the field. I let him know I could only test for terpenes, THC, CBD, and CBN which would give a good basic analysis of the cannabinoid compounds found on growing cannabis plants. The scramble was on. I needed a passport and luckily I live only 30 minutes from the federal building in San Francisco. I called, set up an appointment, paid for expedited processing, and was ready to go.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, anyone heard of this place before? I have heard of Grenada to the south of St. Vincent and Barbados to the north. St. Vincent is north of Trinidad making up the Eastern Caribbean. With reggae music and dance hall coming from all cars, stores and shopping centers, the aroma of cannabis fills the air walking through town. Cannabis is not legal for individuals to grow, possess or sell, however; St. Vincent has been known for quality cannabis cultivation for 30 years. Huh, yup, it’s illegal but it is the island’s cash crop. Farmers in the area cultivate cannabis high in the volcanic mountains over the 1,000 foot elevation where a billy goat would think twice before climbing. Most is sold off the island throughout the Caribbean illegally. The cannabis on the island has never been tested for cannabinoid profiles in the history of the St. Vincent government, until now! The St. Vincent government has written legislation to convert cannabis from taboo to a modern medicinal cannabis industry leader. The goal is to set up standards and allow non-bias cannabis research with clinical trials to better help humanity and to help open up true research of cannabinoids and the plant as a whole. The extraction of the plant will result in many jobs and opportunities of education, medicine and community based concepts to sprout from the rise of employment after legislation has passed. This is a huge opportunity for the people of St. Vincent to have economic freedom and grow as a community of medicinal cannabis exporters to other legal medicinal cannabis countries worldwide. My travel time to St. Vincent was 25 hours. Three planes and a few long layovers later I arrive. Upon arrival, I was escorted around to various locations on the island to observe the lay of the land and meet
influential leaders of the community. On February 8th, I was brought into the government building for a meeting with elected Ministers Saboto Caesar, Ezra Ledger, and Patrick SPIRIT Cottle Jr. to observe and ensure I tested each plant and documented each finding. The media was also present with live feeds broadcasting worldwide. The room felt like 100 degrees and humidity was high. Proudly I tested the cannabis from 8 locations from the island. I tested it with the MYDX analyzer. The tests were taken twice of each sample to confirm potency and cannabinoid terpene profiles. The highest THC was at 25.5% THC and 1.9 CBD. The lowest was 12% THC. After testing the cannabis, I was honored to educate the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, and the other Ministers on my findings and give my analysis of the potential opportunity for the community. My largest thought is that this is a commodity such as any other, just like oil, gold or diamonds. The difference is it can be harvested 2- 3 times a year and never runs dry such as oil, gold or diamonds. As a chef I waited to educate on the potential food and nutritional powers that can be harvested from the plant. On March 23rd the legislation will be completed for a new medicinal cannabis country. I am honored to be chosen to help the government leaders do non-biased testing of the plants that are already cultivated on the island. This was a unique experience and adventure. More to come‌ Here is a link to video and media from St. Vincent from the day of testing. The video link is in the article Courtesy of Secrets of St. Vincent and Searchlight Newspaper. https://secretsofsvg. com/2018/02/08/st-vincents-marijuana-more-potent-than-that-ofjamaica-possibly-usa-scientist/

Classic Fettuccine Alfredo Sauce Parm Garlic Butter This recipe has many rumors of origin, but a Rome restaurant Perfect with French loaf, crescent rolls, & pretzel sticks group I worked for tells a famous story of an American celebrity that traveled to Italy, his family’s home country, & found himself at the door of a trattoria that had closed for the evening. To his surprise, the owner of the trattoria opened the door and recognized the famed actor. Despite having limited ingredients, the owner went on to whip up something quick, known as Pasta al burro con Fromaggino (Pasta with butter & cheese), adding heavy whipping cream & nutmeg to impress the actor. He called it Pasta ala Alfredo. INGREDIENTS: 1 lb fettucine 2 c heavy cream 2 Tbsp good butter, such as Plugra 3” sprig of rosemary 1 Tbsp infused butter 1/2 c Parmesan (Reggiano, Asiago, Pecorino Romano) 1/8 tsp nutmeg salt & pepper to taste DIRECTIONS: 1. In a medium pot, boil some lightly salted water. Follow instructions on package to cook fettuccine until al dente. Drain & set aside. 2. In a saucepan, combine heavy cream, butter & rosemary. Bring to a boil. 3. Reduce to a simmer & check sauce consistency until sauce coats the back of a spoon. Reduce to desired thickness. Adding other sauces to your Alfredo Sauce base can take you to other regions. Such as: PESTO TEX-MEX 2 bunches cilantro 1/4 c fresh oregano 2 c baby spinach 1 c infused olive oil 1/2 c pepitas, toasted 1/2 c black garlic 1 tsp cumin 1 t achiote powder 1/2 Cotija cheese
INGREDIENTS: 1 Tbsp good butter, such as Plugra 1 Tbsp cannabutter (dosage to be adjusted to suit your height & weight; if habitual, adjust dosage to suit) 1/4 c Parmesan, shaved 1 Tbsp garlic chips, lightly toasted DIRECTIONS: 1. Roast garlic in infused olive oil. Add sprig of rosemary. 2. Roast at 325°F for 1 hour. 3. Process in a food processor & set aside. 4. In a small saucepan on low heat, melt butter & add fresh garlic slivers. Toast slowly until golden brown. 5. Set aside for 10 mins. Add Parmesan.
Why not? Treat yourself & friends to a weekend staycation. Infusing your
meal with the right friends who can see the vision you create. A good dried pasta is nice, but have you tried fresh? One can better appreciate al dente ('the tooth', loosely translates to 'firm to the bite') with fresh pasta, as it refers to the delicate cooking point that gives body & texture to the pasta, all better to enjoy the sauce. I enjoy a full bodied Pinot Grigio, an assortment of freshly-baked infused breads & butters. A fuffy French bread with a roast garlic rosemary butter, a dot or so of parmesan & sea salt-infused olive oil, twisted bread sticks infused with lemongrass, a sativa with terpenes that whispers citrus. Alongside a crisp watercress & baby spinach salad with a mix of crispy & shaved, pickled bermuda red onions, peppered pecans & strawberries. Topped with a pomegranate balsamic drizzle. You can’t convince me you’re not in Venice, Italy! www.myexclusivechefs.com
1. Add all leafage to food processor. Pulse until broken down. 2. Add garlic, spices & Cotija cheese. Pulse for 1 minute. 3. Slowly add in infused olive oil. BEET PESTO 2 c pickled beets 1 Tbsp lemon zest 1/2 c pistachios 1 c macadamia nut infused oil 1 Tbsp ginger paste 1 Tbsp sesame oil Blend in food processor, as above. Toss pasta with 1/2 c Alfredo Sauce & 1/2 c pesto

“The Canna Somm.”
JASON STURTSMAN: How can consumers and budtenders develop a nose for cannabis and work on new ways to communicate that information to others? RYAN BONDHUS: Developing anything takes time, effort, and diligence. You have to ask yourself - how much time am I really going to dedicate to my craft? The first thing I teach in my cannabis palate conditioning course is to smell and analyze everything. Write it down! Document everything you experience and be consistent with it. I suggest with any interesting or unique smell you come across, to create one elegant sentence about it. Get out your thesaurus next and create two more words about the same smell. These are just a few tips on a budtender skills that can take a lifetime to perfect. Practice, practice, and practice more. JASON: When you teach students at Budtender Fight Club about Cannabis Education, what are some of the most important points you stress to current and future budtenders? RYAN: There is not really one skill that can be learned to make anyone a valued cannabis worker. I try and teach lifestyle and decision-making abilities. My main points to convey to cannabis staff are confidence, consistency and passion. If these principles are followed, I believe you can do anything, including becoming one of the largest cannabis brokers in the state of Nevada. It is not about the hour you take studying or reviewing, it’s about the other 23 hours of the day and how you are applying yourself as a cannabis professional. JASON: What would you suggest for budtenders to recommend to consumers for the conditions of pain or sleep? RYAN: I always recommend targeting the pain from the source of pain itself - inflammation. With the entourage effect in mind, I look for products with 25mg of CBD or more per serving, with the terpenes myrcene & humulene; and at least 18% THC. This can be altered to accommodate methods of ingestion, day or night use and metabolic tolerance to cannabis. The more variety of cannabinoids and terpenes present the better. JASON: Tell us some more about the show Bake N’ Wake Review and recommendations to those wanting to start doing something similar. RYAN: Bake N’ Wake Review has a deep history behind it for Addie and myself. We started that show when we had nothing but broken hearts from a miscarriage and a blinding passion for everything cannabis. I can remember a time where our oldest daughter was on the east coast for a visit with the grandparents and Addie and I had to decide to eat or buy lights for the Bake N’ Wake set. Let’s just say Addie and I lost a few pounds that week, but we produced some of the videos that have some of the largest views to date. The point of the story is your passion will fuel your content. Once you have that, the name of the game is consistency. Keep producing and posting
and you will gain your following rapidly. Have fun and love what you do or you will not have the drive to do it at all. JASON: Who are some of your favorite Nevada cultivators and why? RYAN: My favorite cultivators are the ones that put the plants first, over process and comfort. I have seen some cultivations design their rooms to accommodate work flow, yield minimums and human processes (like hours of labor), rather than to accommodate the plant’s needs. Although these facilities are necessary to keep up with Nevada cannabis demands, especially for production, I find my palate leans towards the opposite. I prefer the cultivations that work to give each strain the environment necessary for optimal growth and creating labor efficiencies of the cultivation process second. It takes a bit of a risk on the cultivations side to design this way, but the proof is always in the THC infused pudding. The Virtue camp is at the top of my list, with their quality standards and ruthless drive to meet that standard. JASON: Who are some of your favorite Nevada concentrate extraction companies and why? RYAN: Extraction experts are a blend of the artisan mind, with a scientific precision in the process. Anyone can shoot a solvent over cannabis and get hash; but some understand the product so much, that they can manipulate and control the process to a point of precision. This takes scrupulous documentation and air tight practices. I favor the extractors that refuse to stop learning about their craft and crave consistency of their product over everything else. Moxie, AMA and HSH have shown their true colors in the consistency and quality game. JASON: How does someone get prepared to work in the cannabis industry? RYAN: Be your best self every second of every day. Set goals and be relentless in achieving those goals, because they are what will make you valuable to others. Find your passion and get yourself noticed. Once you find that one thing that occupies the majority of your heart, you have to follow it like it’s going to be gone tomorrow. Apply everywhere in the cannabis industry, talk to everyone, and always strive to be the best. Live the lifestyle of the career you want to obtain; and with consistency you will be whatever you want. Salud. Jason Sturtsman is a Nevada Independent Cannabis Laboratory Advisory Committee Member (ILAC), CEO of J.Sturtsman Consulting, and Owner of Healthcare Options for Patients Enterprises (HOPE), a Cannabis Cultivation & Production Facility, and founder of Budtender Fight Club and Cannabis Dispensary Education.
