>>> MMG AGRICULTURE LOCAL, COMMUNITY DRIVEN & CONSUMER FOCUSED s companies and corporations move away from the core values that started this industry, small and locally-owned marijuana businesses stand to keep it local, community driven, and consumer focused. Here is a close look at MMG Agriculture, one of these businesses. MMG distinguishes itself from other marijuana cultivations in Nevada by maintaining local ownership by a single individual. There are many benefits to the community when businesses remain locally-owned. This structure has kept MMG smaller, ensured that all employees, both at entry and management level, are hired locally, and has allowed the MMG Executive Team to maintain a focus on the goals that inspired many pioneers in the medical and recreational marijuana industry. The passion that inspired the original founders of MMG shines through in the quality of the products, packaging, and artistic branding that MMG brings to the market. In August of 2014 a group of five Reno locals came together with a common cause: to apply for a medical license to cultivate marijuana. Each of these individuals had a story that drew them to this cause- a sister going through chemotherapy who longed for access to safe medical marijuana, a friend whose child struggled with seizures and could not access even the most basic CBD extract, and a wife with degenerative arthritis. As a result, MMG (Medical Marijuana Group) was formed, an application was submitted, and ultimately a license granted, allowing MMG s to begin cultivating and producing medicine. Only one owner remains of these original five, but the early ideals of MMG remain the engine that drives this unique marijuana company.

WHAT MAKES MMG DIFFERENT Locally Owned and Run MMG is a Nevada based company. Many multi-state companies move talent from one location to another to ensure that each business is run in a similar manner. MMG however, exists exclusively in the Nevada market, and therefore pulls talent from the local community, both for entry level and management positions. MMG maintains a diverse group of employees that all reside in the Reno area, ensuring that our hiring practices benefit our local community.

14

THE MMG Agriculture TEAM

Community Driven Community involvement is the fuel that inspires MMG. You may have seen “STRAIGHT OUT OF RENO” shirts or pins made by MMG. You may have purchased a buddy box that donated profits to a local non-profit organization for local children with neurological disorders, you may be a Veteran that received a free medical marijuana patient evaluation and card at a Canna Community Connection event. These are all ways in which MMG interacts and prioritizes giving back to the northern Nevada community. What Inspires MMG? Going back to its roots, MMG’s founders were originally inspired to cultivate a clean, healthy, and regulated source of medical marijuana for patients to supply patients with a source of medical marijuana that they could trust. However, in 2017 when recreational marijuana became the main product that dispensaries sold, MMG branched out to accommodate this market shift while continuing to maintain the product standards that it had set. Recreational marijuana allowed MMG to integrate the historical culture of marijuana into the packaging, branding, and product variety. Hands On Growing From the beginning, MMG staff prioritized growing a product that would benefit the most vulnerable in the community, which excludes the use of any harmful substances that might contaminate the medicinal product. This requires a more hands

on approach. MMG’s staff tends to each marijuana plant daily to maintain the unique and exotic strains that are cultivated in their facility. Each and every bud is trimmed by hand by skilled trimmers, each jar is filled by hand, and each preroll is rolled with premium bud by trained packaging experts. Premium Packaging Many consumers complained to dispensaries and in online forums that the product they received in Nevada was dry and “turning to dust” as the hot and dry Nevada climate dehydrated product during transport and storage. In order to avoid this issue, MMG goes the extra mile by containing all buds in airtight containers, with humidity packs when necessary. MMG buds are protected by premium recyclable and reusable glass jars avoiding the possibility of crushed product.

Art in Marijuana Much of the legal U.S. marijuana market has conglomerated and many of the owners are now running multi-state and even international marijuana businesses, taking profits and high level positions out of the communities they are meant to serve. These larger entities use globally accepted and data driven metrics for branding. Historically, marijuana has been used to fuel creativity. MMG prides itself as a creative centric business showcasing art at the forefront of their photography, social media, advertising, and even the labels used on their packaging. As seen on the (left or right) MMG’s instagram highlights the beauty of the marijuana plant, and the art and creativity inspired by it. This industry began with the revolutionaries of society, once considered criminals, who prioritized freedom, individuality, and creative expression. Moving into the future, in an industry that has and will continue to evolve and integrate with the mainstream, small marijuana businesses like MMG will persist in propelling this industry forward. At your next visit to a dispensary, consider supporting local small marijuana businesses and giving back to companies that support your local community.

SOLVENTLESS ROSIN FOR CLEAN VAPING >>>

ith all of the controversy surrounding vaping, we decided that now would be the perfect time to sit down with Aaron Nino, creator of CAMP’s solventless rosin line. The CAMP line introduces Nevada's first solventless rosin in a cartridge and disposable pen which ensures a clean vaping experience.

into rosin and then steam distill strain-specific terpenes at our production facility. From there, we introduce them into our mechanically separated terpenes and rosin concentrate (which we put into our cartridges). This allows us to provide the end-user with a solventless and additive-free vape they can trust and feel confident consuming.

VEGAS CANNABIS MAGAZINE: What is the CAMP rosin?

VCM: What is the importance of using no solvent?

AARON NINO: CAMP rosin is a pure-pressed cannabis extract produced without solvents by simply pressing flower (and now ice-water hash) with the right amount of heat, and the right amount of pressure. We utilize solventless extraction and mechanical separation to achieve a topquality rosin product unlike any other in our state. VCM: How are the rosin vapes made? AARON: CAMP’s rosin vapes are made only from cannabis. That means zero additives, and 100% pure-pressed cannabis flavor and effects. Our production consists of a two-part extraction, we start by pressing healthy flower

20

SITTING DOWN WITH AARON NINO, CREATOR OF CAMP

AARON: Solventless hash-making is a labor of love, which can be more challenging to produce in mass quantities than solvent-based extractions. Solventless products are produced via agitation methods where resin glands are extracted through either ice water baths (bubble hash) or heat and pressure (rosin). Eliminating solvents from the extraction process gives the consumer/patient confidence that they are consuming a 100% clean and pure product. VCM: You were helping medical cannabis patients long before there were licensed dispensaries. How did you get your start in the legal cannabis industry?

AARON: I’ve been growing cannabis legally for over a decade in Nevada as a medical patient and advocating for medical patient’s cannabis rights for even longer. I started in the legal cannabis industry in 2015 after winning a local concentrate competition, but it’s been my employment with Nevada Organic Remedies and the leadership of both Brandon Wiegand and Andrew Jolley that has taken my passion and advocacy to the next level. VCM: Are you a self-taught concentrate maker? AARON: I’m a self-taught hydrocarbon concentrate maker, but an old friend taught me how to make hash with ice water and bubble bags in the mid-2000s. Once I learned how to extract resin from the plant, I was hooked on extracting cannabinoids any way I could. Back when I started, there weren't any YouTube videos detailing the process and I had to experiment with trial and error - which sometimes meant losing all of my medicine to a bad experiment. In the end, I gained more from those experiences versus someone just giving me the answer. VCM: What led you to the development of the CAMP line?

AARON: CAMP was born from the idea of connecting with nature, others and with yourself. The idea behind the CAMP products is that they should enhance and support an active lifestyle, which is why we focus heavily on the natural products rather than using additives and solvents. VCM: Tell us about your CAMP team. AARON: The CAMP team is comprised of experienced retailers, scientists, botanists, developers, artists and business leaders who together bring a wealth of experience to perfect product manufacturing. VCM: What sets your products apart from other products we’ve seen in dispensaries thus far? AARON: Our Rosin Cartridge is the first and only of its kind in Nevada! We created these cartridges with a wellness-minded attitude, as a healthier option when you are in dispensaries picking a cartridge or disposable for the weekend. Our products are made from 100% cannabis and we want to provide our customers with not only the healthiest choice, but

VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM

an experience to write home about. We designed these carts to taste like flower in a cartridge and still give you the ability to be discreet when consuming.

VCM: Who/what inspires you? AARON: Good people doing the right thing! And when you’re inspired by genuinely good people doing great things, great things tend to happen. VCM: What can we expect from CAMP in the future? AARON: Quality innovation! VCM: Are you working on any other product lines? AARON: We’re currently working on a new line of tinctures! I’ve been helping my grandmother treat her Parkinson’s with CBD tinctures for many years and after seeing the overwhelming positive effects tinctures have on her health, we decided to create a strongly dosed tincture for people in need of relief just like her. VCM: Before we wrap this up is there anything you would like to add? AARON: I would also like to tell people reading this that every one of you can make a difference in our world. Keep fighting for what you believe in and strive to be amazing stewards of our earth! Respect and love each other, and respect and love our planet! Thank you to Bill and Stephanie for being the most consistent voices of cannabis advocacy in Nevada since its inception. WE REACHED >>> HAVE PEAK STUPIDITY ON THE VAPING "CRISIS" YET? Here's What We Think and What We Know We’d say that we have reached peak stupidity in this entire vaping “epidemic”, but we would probably be proven wrong before getting this article published. From the top of our federal government right on down the line, ignorance and misinformation are steering the debate about how to curb the sudden string of hundreds of cases of vaping related lung ailments, including seven people dead here in the U.S. just in the past few weeks. Maybe the biggest misconception of all is that this is just a “black market” problem and that as long as you are getting your e-juice or cannabis oil from a legit smoke shop or dispensary, that you’re guaranteed a safe product. The fact of the matter is that regulations on nicotine-based vape juice are virtually non-existent, and while mandatory lab testing on legal cannabis-based products may flag for metals, molds, pesticides, or residual solvents, none of those have been singled out as suspects in these recent deaths. Watching normally sleepy, unmotivated politicians shake off their cobwebs over this issue has been frustrating for a number of reasons so we are going to lay out what we know so far alongside the propaganda we’ve been fed, and even a juicy conspiracy theory to try to tie it all together as this story continues to (d)evolve. WELL THAT SURE ESCALATED QUICKLY Electronic cigarettes and the nicotine-laced “juice” that is loaded into them have been on the market for well over a decade. They faced immense and immediate backlash from skeptical worrywarts who warned that nobody knew how this new delivery method would affect peoples’ health in the long term – much of that opposition being funded by tobacco companies who recognized the threat that this new method posed on their toxic business model. Over the past 10+ years however, e-cigs have proven to be an effective and healthier alternative to actual tobacco use and, until very recently, had failed to make the scary headlines that we were warned about; the ones we are seeing now. Using a vaporizer pen to puff on cannabis oil is also about a decade long phenomena at this point, as is dabbing, and the tech on both has come a long way since those early days, as has the quality and availability of the oil.

24

By: Beard Bros. Pharms

For all those years, vape peeps were blowing dragon-like clouds, dabbers were dropping 1g globs on red hot nails, and pre-filled THC-rich vape carts rapidly outpaced all other forms of consumption especially among people new to cannabis. No epidemics, no press conferences, and no mysterious illnesses or deaths. So why now? Let’s take a look at the seven reported deaths so far: August 23rd, 2019 – An Illinois man whose name and age were withheld died after using a “vaping device”, no further details were given as to what he was vaping September 5th, 2019 – A person in Oregon whose age and gender has been kept anonymous died of this mysterious acute respiratory illness after vaping cannabis oil allegedly purchased from a state-sanctioned retail dispensary, the first such case reported in the nation. September 6th, 2019 – A 55 year old Los Angeles County resident with a history of health problems died after using a vape pen. Officials would not comment on his case in particular but said that a “majority” of the dozen or so related illnesses in the county involved the vaping of THC/cannabis products. September 6th, 2019 – An adult male in Indiana died after being hospitalized for shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain and vomiting said to be related to his vaping habit. September 6th, 2019 – A 65 year old Minnesota man with a history of lung problems died after complications following the repeated use of “illicit” THC-containing vape carts. September 10th, 2019 – A 50 year old woman in Kansas with a history of health problems died allegedly within one week of trying an e-cig for the first time. September 17th, 2019 – Health officials in Tulare, CA announce that a 40 year old man died this past weekend of the same mysterious severe acute lung failure seen in 36 states and counting. It’s pretty remarkable that with a decade or more of public guinea pigging of these mostly self-regulated products, all of this headline-grabbing drama has gone down in less than a month. We’ll get to that in a minute, though.

THE LATEST KNEES WILL BE KNEES AND JERKS WILL BE JERKS As these dusty ass politicians awake from their perpetual slumber to talk once again about bans and prohibition instead of research and solutions, the easiest and most common rebuttal to it all is to draw a comparison to actual tobacco products like cigarettes which kill nearly half a million people every single year here in the U.S. and ask where the outrage is over that. To keep things in perspective though, we have to admit that cigarettes do not typically act that fast or hospitalize younger users with the frequency we are suddenly seeing with vaping. Something stinks here for sure, even worse than that cloud of Blueberry Razzmatazz that hipster just exhaled. Iin an ideal democracy we’d welcome lawmakers into the discussion. Yeah, well, unfortunately we do not live in an ideal democracy, do we? Instead, here is a brief recap of some of the “solutions” that have been presented so far by a bunch of people who think e-cigs are some form of magic and that cannabis is the work of the devil. Our fearless leader, the President of the United States, addressed the nation and the world to announce that his big fix would be to ban all “flavored” e-cig products. In a Freudian slip, he pointed out that the First Lady has a son who she warns of the dangers of such products. (P.S. It’s his son too…) In yet another classic

Trump soundbite that will live on forever, he mimicked a phantom adolescent youth in his head and said, “Mom, I wanna vape!” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo followed Trump’s lead and also announced that the Empire State would be banning flavored e-cig products, claiming that they are only made for kids. According to Cuomo, “No one can say long-term use of vaping — where you’re inhaling steam and chemicals deep into your lungs — is healthy.” Well, Gov’nah, Public Health England reports that vaping nicotine is 95% safer than smoking tobacco. You see, it’s not like people are going to vape or nothing. They vape for the buzz, not the fucking mango flavor. Take away the vape, there are other ways to get the buzz, like an actual cigarette which teens have abused for decades and which account for 98% of all tobacco-related deaths. That is the inevitable result of prohibiting anything from booze to abortion – people will still get it, just in a much more dangerous way. Following this shitty form of leadership as it continues to flow downhill, California’s governor Gavin Newsom vowed this week to allocate $20 million to “confront the growing youth epidemic and health risks linked to vaping” in the state. “With mysterious lung illnesses and deaths on the rise, we have to educate our kids and do everything we can to tackle this crisis,” says Gov. Newsom.

25

VEGAS CANNABIS //

VEGAS CANNABISMAG.COM

“There is a broad and bipartisan coalition of legislators seeking to protect our youth, and we are committed to working with the Legislature and stakeholders to build on these executive actions and put forward a strong tobacco reform package in 2020.” So, they’re going to spend twentymillion on more billboards and Facebook ads? The funds allegedly come in part from legal cannabis tax revenues. Is that what voters approved with Prop 64, that cannabis tax dollars help fund a ‘tobacco reform package’? Early investigations have revealed that Vitamin E Acetate has been found in many of the samples pulled from suspect vape cartridges. The leading theory is that this fatty compound is able to pass through the extremely fine membrane of your lungs when vaporized, but once inside it cools and thickens like bacon grease to clog delicate respiratory pathways. California’s cannabis market has the strictest requirements in the country, if not the world, but labs are not asked to test for additives like Vitamin A, and so even legal cannabis-based vape carts could potentially have this questionable ingredient lurking within. Gov. Newsom could call for a moratorium on the use of such ingredients and mandate that labs identify any presence of them until more is known, likely for far less than $20,000,000. We are being led to believe that seven people have died in 3½ weeks but the best immediate solution is an educational campaign aimed at the youth? Reminder: Though there are plenty of kids under the age of 18 laid up in bed right now feeling like shit due to vaping, not one of the seven deaths listed above were minors.

26

A QUICK NOTE ON VITAMIN E BEFORE WE GO FULL ALEX JONES There are exceptions to any rule, but by and large, most cannabis-based vape pen cartridges are filled with cannabis oil distillate. Distillate is produced from dark and undesirable crude forms of cannabis oil which are refined through the distillation process and transformed into golden clear goo typically ultra-high in THC but devoid of other cannabinoids and virtually all terpenes (flavor). In its “raw” form, not only is the flavor of distillate (or lack of) far from ideal, but the consistency is often too thick to properly vaporize in the average vape cart. To enhance this bland product and to give it diversity (assign strains to flavors), terpenes are added back into the distillate. These terps, in addition to a splash of MCT oil can reduce that viscosity to the point where the oil will flow more easily, but can often leave the end product looking “cut” even to the untrained eye of the consumer. AND IT IS CUT. Every drop of terps or MCT is one less drop of THC-laden distillate in your 1g cart, but it doesn’t end there. Vitamin E Acetate is a thickener, added back into this soup that now resembles anything but a cannabis plant, to tighten the consistency of the oil back up a bit. We feel that the reason why we are just now seeing a widespread string of illnesses and even deaths is that too many manufacturers of both e-juices and cannabis vape carts have been constantly tweaking their formulas in an attempt to fool customers into paying more for less and that their experiment finally went awry.

Many of the leading brands that manufacture pre-filled vape carts have released statements to affirm that they do not add any diluents like Vitamin E to their product and never will. Fortunately, even though the state of California has not yet required it, advanced testing labs like Cannasafe here in Los Angeles are already offering the service. All dispensaries considering giving shelf space to pre-filled vape carts should require a COA from an accredited lab like Cannasafe showing all levels of such secondary additives, artificial terpenes included. If you are still buying weed carts on the streets, you’re pretty much rolling the dice with every rip unless you personally know the dude filling them and quite literally trust him with your life. These inept politicians could end the use of diluents and thickening agents in regulated cannabis markets overnight. Even if they are not found to be the ultimate cause of the illnesses and deaths we’re seeing, a temporary moratorium on them only benefits consumers. Plenty of reputable brands out there are making live resin carts with nothing artificial reintroduced, and they work great, shell out a few extra bucks for those and breathe easier knowing that you are several steps closer to the plant. It is not uncommon for unaltered distillate to test at 90%+ THC, so read the labels next time you are shopping for a distillate cart. Anything below 85% should raise a red flag for you. The more the oil is cut with any secondary substance, the lower the THC percentage will be, right? You’ll find carts on the market with 65-75% THC listed on the

package, so what’s the rest? Consumers need to know and brands need to be compelled to disclose exact ingredients. OK TIME FOR THE TIN FOIL HAT As we have tried to establish throughout this article, this issue is changing by the day and what info we have leaves us with more questions than answers. Our leading theory is the Vitamin E Theory, or Acetates and Assholes… you pick the title you like best. As you probably know, counterfeit vape packaging and parts are readily available on shelves in Downtown LA or just a click away on Alibaba or Amazon. We’re willing to bet that these same totally unregulated outlets started offering suspect additives relatively recently as well and that the consequences of that are now coming to bear. But what if… Ok doesn’t it seem at least a little suspicious that all of these deaths have occurred only in America? That sort of lines up with our theory above, but it’s still a bit odd considering that the websites we mentioned will ship anywhere, as will countless cart-hustling trap lords. Not to mention, this illness is not exclusive to vaping cannabis oil, so it seems hard to believe that nobody anywhere else in the world has made a headline like this yet. Now if you were a chaos agent for the Big Tobacco machine, what better way to knock down your two biggest rivals with one shot? We’ve got nicotine consumers blaming cannabis consumers and vice versa. Every city, state, or global superpower that bans all flavored vape products delivers

a massive financial victory back to the tobacco companies. Eliminate Mango Juul pods from every high school campus in America and watch Marlboro stock prices soar. People really are sick, and some really are dead. Not even Alex Jones would claim that Marlboro orchestrated it all as an attack on competitors, but is it really all that far-fetched to believe that the wall-to-wall media coverage about it and the sudden leap to action by a do-nothing government may be sparked at least in part by the influence that Big Tobacco has bought and paid for over the decades? 1,300 Americans will die today from cigarettes and it is more important than ever to remember and reiterate that zero people will die today, or any day, from cannabis itself. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF EMILE J. FAGERSTROM

BY SHARON lETTS

Medicating for ADHD Fifty-two year old Oregon cannabis patient, Emile J. Fagerstrom, describes himself as an “ADHD, Dyslexic, All-American athlete, latch-key kid on the Spectrum.” Fagerstrom grew up in California, and though his mother was a police officer, his uncle (her brother) grew cannabis and cooked meth, which was a paradox, to say the least. “My mom’s younger sister was married to a Pastor,” he laughed. “We had a mixed bag as a family, but cannabis was always something that was around. I bought my first sack from a neighbor for ten bucks, then sold half for ten dollars a bag. That’s how I continued to finance self-medicating at a very young age.”

His family put him in sports to help calm him down, where he shined with athletic ability in Water Polo and swimming. “They’d put me in the pool in the morning, and I’d go to the plunge after school,” he said. “I’d smoke weed before meets, before working out – all the time,” he said. “It always helped me more than anything, but I didn’t understand why. I didn’t even understand why they put me in sports – nothing was ever explained to me.” Fagerstrom began smoking cannabis when he was 12 years-old, spending time with his uncle, who was once caught selling weed by local police.

Diagnosed with ADHD, and on the Autistic Spectrum as an adult, Fagerstrom said without knowledge of his disorder as a child, he had to partner up with better students with good notes in order to pass in school.

“I didn’t get high the first time and wasn’t conscious of how it affected me,” he said. “I also used meth – same thing as Adderall. Cigarettes and alcohol worked to calm me, too, but none of that was lasting or positive. I honestly never liked meth, but it did work for me in the same way Adderall did.”

“I’m still friends with the girl who helped me with my schoolwork when I was in third grade,” he said. “Lots of my friends had faith in me and stuck by me.”

Fagerstrom didn’t feel high from cannabis, because he said it worked for him the most, with little side effects; calming him down and helping him to focus. Per Webmd.com, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a chronic condition causing inattention, hyperactivity, and sometimes, impulsivity. The disorder begins in childhood and can continue into adulthood. According to DrugRehab.com, “Adderall and methamphetamine are stimulant drugs that speed brain activity. They share many side effects and health risks, but there are also key differences. Both can lead to addiction when abused.”

30

The site goes on to say that Methamphetamine (meth) can also be

prescribed by a doctor, but it is also made in illegal drug labs and sold on the streets. Both meth and Adderall belong to a class of drugs called amphetamines and have similar chemical structures. An article in Healthline.com states that even though there is not enough research on cannabis use for ADD or ADHD, patients are using it with success anyway. “Many adolescents and adults with ADHD are convinced that cannabis does help them and has fewer side effects [than ADHD medications],” says Jack McCue, MD, FACP, an author, physician, and emeritus professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. “It may be that they, not their doctors, are correct.” This writer has interviewed many adult ADD, ADHD, and Autistic Spectrum patients who began using cannabis as adolescents, like Fagerstrom, because it worked for them. The fears that using cannabis at a young age, due to possible developmental issues, are moot, as the patients interviewed are productive, responsible adults now. As a matter of fact, this writer began smoking cannabis at 16 for the same reasons as Fagerstrom, having an undiagnosed processing disorder, ADD, and anxiety. “I knew I was smart, I was well-read - I just didn’t understand what was wrong with my focus,” he continued. “Writing is a chore to this day, but I have a good understanding of things. I make up words, and when I get tired, my tongue leaves me – I speak gibberish. Words are my kryptonite!” Fagerstrom said he grew up in a rough neighborhood, accumulating 4,000 stitches from being attacked, with threats on his life. “I hustled and did illegal things for money,” he said. “I had a lot of insecurities due to my processing problems, and no guidance. I don’t speak with my mother any longer. She used to beat me. I’m thinking that might be a common thing with kids like me who don’t know how to calm down. She didn’t understand me or my cannabis use – after all, she was a cop.” His grandparents stepped up and gave him opportunities, never discussing his challenges, only putting a focus on his successes. “Cannabis helps me process situations, and not create high emotion situations, without being impulsive” he concluded. “You can’t discipline a child for not being involved – they need tools to help them. You can’t just tell a kid with hypertension to calm down. It will never work.”

Cannabis Everyday

Fagerstrom said he consumes organic cannabis products every day, throughout the day, to deal with the many symptoms from his disorders. “I use cannabis that’s traceable from seed to finish,” he explained. “Most of the products I consume are grown and manufactured by me. I definitely wake and bake first thing in the morning to help me focus on what I have to do that day. Cannabis gets me through the day and helps me manage my time. Without it, I’m a wreck.” Fagerstrom said he believes cannabis removes the hypertension,

helps him to be less reactionary, more mindful. “I start the day with cannabis and coffee,” he said. “Right now I’m enjoying Durban Poison and XJ13 hybrid. My coffee is a 16 ounce cup with decarbed, one-third teaspoon Grease OG – infused coconut oil. The fats within the coconut oil react with the caffeine, giving me more energy.” He carries three vape pens with him to medicate throughout the day, all manufactured by The Classics. One is filled with Green Crack, another Pineapple Express, and another Granddaddy Purple. “In the early afternoon, straight through to dinnertime, I smoke flower and drink one or two, High Style, cannabis infused beers with 10 milligrams of activated THC and less than five percent alcohol content.” His after dinner smoking preference is flower in a glass bong with combinations of Tahoe Kush, Granddaddy Purple, Afghani Kush, and Northern Lights. “Just before bed I use coconut infused with decarbed Grease OG and lavender essential oil, topically,” he added.

From the Black Market, to Mainstream Medicine

Today, Fagerstrom is project manager for Northern Js Agriculture, a large-scale cannabis cultivation operation in Oregon. His bio indicates he has more than 30 years of experience in the cannabis space, with some of that from the black market – where most of the industry came from. “I’ve completed cannabis operation contracts in multiple states that were vertically integrated, and continue to thrive to this day,” he said. “Right now I’m working on getting patents for non-psychotropic cannabis topicals and tinctures; with licensing rights in the states, Europe and South America.” Building bridges and sharing his knowledge from a childhood of frustration, then success with cannabis, has become a calling. “Access to this plant, education on what it can do, and allowing us to make our own choices of how we treat our bodies – that’s what I’m working for now,” he surmised. TOKIN’ WITH THE INFAMOUS

MADCHILD It was a perfect, sunny SoCal day down in Huntington Beach for the SRH Fest back in August. I was there to manage the stage, but just had to slip off for a minute to talk to Madchild about his new album Demons, his own personal demons, and the role cannabis has played in his life. I’ve been a fan since the Swollen Members days, so I’m stoked to see how far the Silver Tongued Devil has come.

34

BY HOPPER

on, but I have so much fun on stage. I really love my job. Hopper: You flip it on like a light switch. The energy is out of this world! Madchild: Thank you, I appreciate it.

Hopper: You just crushed that set, you’re an absolute beast on stage! What’s it like to whip the crowd into a frenzy with just a couple of bars?

Hopper: We’re surrounded by thousands of stoners wreaking havoc here at SRH Fest, so it’s the perfect place to ask you about your thoughts on weed. Are you a full blown stoner, a casual toker, or do you not partake at all?

Madchild: I think it takes more than a couple bars, but it’s an amazing feeling for sure. Every time I go onstage I’m like, how am I gonna pull this off? And then every time I get off stage I’m like, that was lit! It’s a pretty special feeling to be able to go on stage and connect with the crowd like that. It definitely always feels like a challenge right before I’m about to go

Madchild: Well, I’m trying to become a casual partaker because I used to smoke tons of weed from when I was like 16 to 26-27. Copious amounts of marijuana! Then all of a sudden it started hittin’ me the wrong way. I’d start getting like anxiety and shit. Actually, I just did an instore with a tattoo shop and there was a bunch of cannabis companies there and

I got some really mellow Indica. I’m gonna try smoking that. I want to be a part of the culture again, but I want to make sure I’m enjoying myself while I do it. I do love the cannabis culture. I think it’s a super good vibe. It’s an amazing thing, it’s positive in so many ways. It helps people in so many ways. Being somebody who is a recovered drug addict, I feel that it’s definitely okay to smoke cannabis, and I think that it might be something that I can partake in. I just wanna make sure that I’m smoking the right strain. Hopper: I just hit my 420th day of sobriety yesterday. Obviously I still smoke weed like a chimney, but that’s it. Madchild: Congratulations, that’s amazing! Hopper: Your song Watergate is way outside the box from your usual style, what made you go in that direction? Madchild: It’s just the beginning brother, to be honest with you. I got off Xanax about 17 1/2 months ago, and I’ve been sort of healing since then, and becoming myself again. The last year has been amazing, rebuilding my career, and my personal life as well. I’m sort of jumping from one question to another here. Watergate is a song that is definitely a single sounding type of song. What I’m getting to is, the music I’m making right now is actually even a step further than that. What I’m doing is, I’m taking very current sounding sort of trap beats and doing what I’m known to do. So like, I’m snapping on them lyrically, but going back to what I said, I like

what’s happening in hip hop today but I had to figure out a way to finesse it where I can still do what I’m known to do, so it’s not too much of a curveball for people. I’m super excited about what I’m making right now. The reason I took that question there is, I think Watergate is part of that organic growth where I’m at right now. Does that make sense? Hopper: Yeah it does, and also the video is sick! You’ve got Risk, SRH, that SoCal vibe, all the art, it’s the complete package. What are some of your other favorite tracks on Demons. Madchild: I like the song Demons a lot because it really tells my story from my first album, Dopesick, which actually just went Gold in Canada. I’m pretty proud of that. Hopper: Nice! Congratulations. Madchild: Thank you, yeah it sort of takes people through the addictions I’ve gone through in life and explains everything to where I’m at, at this point in life. Another song I haven’t done a video for yet is called Forget About You. I have a song called Dickhead that did extremely well for me, it’s a very funny song, and I think Forget About You is a very similar type of song. Overall, I really like the Demons album. I think it’s kinda like Dopesick Part 2. Hopper: I’ve been listening to Demons, and it’s fuckin’ dope. I listen to all your stuff, and I dig it all. Madchild: For me to be honest with you, that album

VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM

was a very safe play. I knew that I was coming back after going through my trials and tribulations, so I wanted to make music that I liked, first of all, but that I knew my fans would enjoy. So like, once again, that’s a very safe play, that record. The music I’m about to start putting out is me completely being an artist again, and really letting everything go and just evolving as an artist. I’m super excited for people to hear what I’m working on right now. It’s just the beginning, brother. It’s just the beginning. Hopper: Your work ethic is out of this world. What keeps you inspired? Madchild: Stayin’ off drugs, bro! Hopper: Fuck yeah! Madchild: When I’m on drugs, I ain’t doin’ shit. The only good thing about being an addict is when you stop being addicted to negative things, you become addicted to positive things, so for me that’s work and making music. I think that’s where my work ethic comes in, is when I get rid of the demons and the darkness and start walking towards the light, and these days it’s just getting brighter. I like to stay busy, you know idle time is the devil’s playground, so staying busy is key. I love touring as much as possible, being in the studio as much as possible. Just bangin’ out music, bangin’ out videos. That’s what I was put on this earth to do. Hopper: You have a talent for keeping your finger on the pulse of new trends. What do you think is hot right now? Madchild: There’s a lot of things crackin’ off. The best way to answer that question is paying

\\ VEGAS CANNABIS

attention to what the kids like. If you’re not paying attention to what the kids are listening to, then you’re crazy. It’s simple as that. I’m not from the Internet era, so I don’t sit on my phone for 8-9 hours a day, and I don’t listen to new music 9 hours a day, which you would have to, to really keep up with what’s going on. But I definitely do consciously pay attention to the broad strokes of what’s popping. You know what I mean? There’s so many waves of what’s happening. I really dig a lot of this new trap music, it just keeps evolving. I’m not so much into the mumble rap as much, but some of these kids are really starting to snap and really push the boundaries of their flows and stuff. I just really like that. It’s fresh, it’s exciting. Hopper: What’s next for you after the tour wraps up? Madchild: Coming back to LA, working on a couple projects. Then I’ll be doing another run in Canada, a headlining tour. Then early in the new year I’m gonna go tour Europe, then tour America. Just keep workin’, that’s it. Hopper: Do you have anyone you want to shout out before we wrap it up? Madchild: Yeah dude, shout out to Kevin Zinger and Ivory Daniels, my partners. Those guys are my brothers. Without them, I probably wouldn’t still be here. facebook.com/Madchild. is also beneficial for your body and health. VCM: Do all of your candles contain CBD? If so, what prompted you to begin adding CBD? DS: No, I also have regular lotion candles that are the same quality minus the CBD. After having several customers ask for a candle with CBD in it to help with their aches and pains, I researched and worked on perfecting and making the same quality lotion candle that my customers have come to love, but with CBD in it! VCM: Do you make other products? VEGAS CANNABIS MAGAZINE: Tell us about your craft and how you got started. DANIELLE SIMS: I've always been a candle lover, but after finding out about the toxins in some candles on the market, I decided, why not make my own candles that are natural without the added chemicals? VCM: What goes into candle making? DS: A lot of patience, heart, time, and it's my passion to perfect what I make. Since these aren't your typical candles it also takes a lot of research! VCM: What makes your

36

candles unique? DS: My candles are so different from anything else on the market. They are made with all-natural ingredients. When you melt the candle you can use the warm oil for relaxation and comfort, but they are also soft enough that you can use them topically without burning. So you can rub the soft lotion or warm oil into your sore areas to sooth muscles, joints, irritation, and so much more! I created these candles to help my niece who is a Type 1 Diabetic with her dry patches. At the time she was 7 and burning candles wasn't an option, but my sister loves candles. So, after a year and a half of working on the recipe, the overall goal was to create something that not only smells great in your home, but

DS: Yes, aside from the lotion candles I also make lotion melts with or without CBD. The melts come in 3oz 6-cube containers. Like the candles, the melts can be used solid or melted. You have the option of popping a cube out and using it like a lotion bar, then just placing it back into the container. The other option is you can place a cube in a warmer and use the warm oil on your skin. All of the products are the same quality, but just in a different form. VCM: When we spoke, you joked that your ingredients are so pure that you could actually eat the candle, which is quite impressive. Without giving away any formulation secrets, can you mention what's in your candles and why you use those particular ingredients?

DS: After researching different oils and butters that can be used to create not only just a candle, but a lotion candle safe enough for children to use, I narrowed it down to the four I currently use now. Each one I use has their own unique advantage when applied to the skin. So yes, even though the ingredients are safe enough to eat, I don't recommend eating your candle or melts when you're feeling hungry! VCM: What type of response have you received so far from those that have tried your CBD candle products? DS: I have been lucky enough to share these candles with so many amazing people. I have customers ranging from the average person with aches and pains to NHRA drivers, a former Nascar crew chief, a CBD company (they purchase white label), a WWE wrestler, an MMA fighter, a country singer, an actor, and even cancer patients going through chemo! All have benefited and loved the products. VCM: How can readers purchase candles from you? DS: They can go to my website at: lowcntrycandlesnmore.com. I also can be reached by email at: lowcntrycandlesnmore@gmail. com. VCM: Do you offer wholesale

rates to businesses looking to carry your candles in their stores? And, what about white labeling? DS: Absolutely! I offer both wholesale rates and white labeling. Feel free to contact me for more information. VCM: How can readers follow you online or on social media? DS: They can follow me on Facebook or Instagram @ lowcntrycandlesnmore. VCM: Do you utilize CBD yourself? If so, please elaborate on why or how it helps you. DS: I do personally use CBD everyday! After researching it and finding out all the benefits I tried it and have been hooked ever since. I noticed since using it whether orally or topically I haven't had any issues with my arthritis flaring up, I haven't needed my inhaler for asthma in almost a year, I get a better night’s sleep, and I just feel healthy and happier all around!

VCM: What/who inspires you? DS: My niece inspires me. I wanted to make something that not only helped her but other kids like her! In creating my business, I also wanted to show my kids that no matter how big or small, if you put your heart into something and give it your all then you can accomplish anything! VCM: What do you love about Las Vegas? DS: What is not to love? Between the people, the amazing atmosphere, there is always something new and exciting to explore. And whether you enjoy the city life or relaxing at the lake, you're pretty much guaranteed to never be bored!

>>> BEHIND THE SCIENCE OF CANNABIS

Cannabis has been employed as medicine for literally thousands of years. Samples of cultivated cannabis and primitive tools for its consumption date back to ancient China, nearly 5,000 years ago. The herb is arguably one of the safest and most effective natural medicines available to humans. It is helpful for patients, wellness practitioners, and recreational consumers to understand the underlying mechanisms involved in smoking, vaporizing, or eating cannabis and cannabis derivatives (extracts, concentrates, and infused products). Let’s get started! The flowers of mature female cannabis plants produce secretory glands called trichomes. These mushroomshaped, nearly microscopic stalks function as mini resin factories, manufacturing the sticky “crystals” or “powder” that are characteristic of premium cannabis. One of the oldest forms of cannabis concentrate, kief, is merely a collection of loose (unpressed) trichomes. When pressed into bricks, kief becomes hash. Inside Trichomes Trichomes are of significance to consumers and wellness professionals because they produce three families of medicinal molecules: Cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. The chemical complexity of the plant is better understood when one realizes that its genome (the set of genetic instructions) contains

40

more than 110 cannabinoids, 200 terpenes, and 20 flavonoids (not all of which manifest in a single cultivar, or “strain,” of the herb). Terpenes are aromatic molecules produced by many plants in nature—including hops, pine trees, rosemary, nutmeg, and about 20,000 others)—not just cannabis. Originally perceived to merely convey pungent fragrances (an evolutionary defense mechanism employed to dissuade pests and predators) research has revealed that terpenes possess medical qualities that rival those of their sibling cannabinoids. Flavonoids primarily convey flavor, but also affect the aroma of cannabis. Like terpenes, research has revealed that flavonoids provide medicinal benefits.

Endocannabinoids vs. Phytocannabinoids

Cannabinoids are available in two varieties, endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids. The endo variety is produced within the body, while phytocannabinoids are created by the cannabis plant (and no other plant species in nature). Research has revealed that phytocannabinoids are mimetic molecules, meaning that they impersonate endocannabinoids so they can interact with the human body.

The Endocannabinoid System

When this complex collection of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids enters the

body, it does so via something called the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. The ECS is a collection of millions of microscopic cellular receptors that act as neurotransmitters, sending impulses and chemical messages throughout the various systems of the body when stimulated by endocannabinoids or their cannabis-based chemical cousins, phytocannabinoids. The ECS is found not only in humans, but also mammals— including household pets such as dogs and cats. This is why a variety of pet-specific hemp and cannabis-derived products are becoming available for the treatment of common pet conditions, from the pain associated with hip dysplasia to anxiety and panic attacks, thunder, or fireworks. Surprisingly, the impact of the ECS within nature extends beyond mammals to all vertebrates! Research conducted during the past three decades has revealed that ECS receptors are scattered throughout nearly every organ, gland and tissue in the body (including within the brain and bones). These specialized cellular receptors have even been found within the nasal passages, where absorption and overall bioavailability of inhaled cannabinoids occurs quickly and efficiently. Although four types of ECS receptors have been identified, most research and attention has been paid to the two most

by Curt Robbins

common varieties: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found in greatest numbers within the brain and central nervous system (CNS). Many cannabinoids can pass through the highly selective blood/ brain barrier (something not even endorphins are allowed), permitting them to cause changes to critical bodily functions, including appetite, sleep, mood, cognition, motor skills, and immune function. CB2 receptors, although found in low numbers in the brain and CNS, primarily populate the glands and tissues of the immune system located throughout the body. Likewise, CB1 receptors are found outside the brain and CNS within the immune system, but in relatively low densities compared to CB2. The fact that nearly all areas of the body feature cannabinoid receptors helps explain why cannabis is such a diversely efficacious medicine, treating a wide variety of diseases and conditions. Collectively, cannabinoids deliver three pronounced medicinal properties: Decreased anxiety, lower systemic inflammation, and analgesia. However, particular cannabinoids, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) deliver additional health properties. For example, THC has been proven to stimulate appetite, a characteristic of value to patients suffering from HIV/ AIDS or intestinal conditions like colitis or Crohn’s disease. This

VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM

\\ VEGAS CANNABIS

molecule is also an effective anti-nausea treatment, delivering better antiemetic properties and fewer undesired side effects than modern pharmaceutical drugs.

Entourage Effect

In 1998, Israeli researchers Raphael Mechoulam (the scientist who first isolated THC in 1964) and S. Ben-Shabat identified a potential synergy between cannabinoids that they called the entourage effect. The theory of the entourage effect proposes that cannabinoids and terpenes, when commingled in the ECS, produce medicinal efficacy that is greater than the collection of their individual health benefits. In other words, this theory embraces the concept of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. The entourage effect is why many patients and consumers desire fullspectrum cannabis products from which no cannabinoids or terpenes have been removed. Also available are products formulated as isolates (featuring a single cannabinoid) and broad-spectrum (from which one or more cannabinoids have been removed).

Endocannabinoid Deficiency Theory

In 2004, American neurologist Dr. Ethan Russo made a groundbreaking observation regarding the medicinal efficacy of cannabis that he called endocannabinoid deficiency theory. Russo proposed that a deficiency in the ECS may result in specific and common diseases and conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, and many diseases involving inflammation. The cannabinoids and terpenes produced by cannabis are of obvious value as a supplement to the ECS of those who suffer a deficiency and are not producing enough of their own endocannabinoids to deal with their particular biochemistry and health challenges. Just as humans consume nutritional supplements in an effort to improve health, science is revealing that supplementation of the ECS with phytocannabinoids from cannabis may result in what Russo calls homeostasis, a state in which the ECS is balanced and operating at optimal efficiency.

Dear Mary Jane: According to my old friend Wayne Newton, Halloween is your favorite holiday. Is this true? It seems a little strange to enjoy such a scary holiday, doesn’t it? While I personally favor Arbor Day (trees are cool), I enjoy learning about the habits and beliefs of others, no matter how strange they might be! So tell me, what is it about this scary season that appeals to you so much? Fraidy-Cat Frankie

My Dearest Nancy-Boy Nancy, Are you afraid of things that go bump in the night? Aww, that is SO CUTE! I also like trees, especially when used to burn people at the stake. I’m guessing that you are no stranger to sleeping with a night light? Do you have a teddy bear to protect you from the bad guys while you sleep? Personally, I have an inverted crucifix nailed to the wall above where I sleep, so I am having a little bit of trouble understanding your problem here. Have I scared you off yet? I believe the biggest reason for my love of Halloween is because Las Vegas is Halloween 365 days a year. After all, Las Vegas is the original town for self-reinvention. In this town, you can rep yourself as whoever or whatever you want to, at least for a little while. I mean, I would not stroll in to a local hospital and demand surgical privileges or anything, but with interpersonal relationships, the sky's the limit. A big personal goal of mine is to keep myself entertained as often as possible, often at the expense of others. I absolutely adore little children, so I do not torment them when they come to trick or treat. The older kids? The ones who want to soap my windows and leave flaming bags of dog shit on people’s front walks? They are totally fair game. I have sat in my bushes with a hose on more occasions than I can count, hoping against hope for the opportunity to douche some little adolescent peckerhead who thinks he’s going to mess with my holiday joy! Granted, I am being a little hypocritical when it comes to Halloween justice. I was famous for filling a squirt gun with lighter fluid and finding jack-o-lanterns with candles burning

inside of them. Squirt, squirt, BOOM! I finally quit doing that when the fire really did follow the stream of lighter fluid back to my squirt gun. The best lessons are those which are learned explosively, apparently. I also got in trouble for giving children with paper Halloween sacks scoops of ice cream directly into their bags. Within 20 minutes, the scoop at the bottom of the sack melts the sack and leaves a pile of candy in its wake, ready for an opportunistic Mary Jane to swoop in and get my candy supply for the next month. I was not a particularly nice kid. Thankfully, I have been told that I make a much better adult than I did a kid, so I have that going for me. Wayne Newton hasn’t been returning my phone calls lately, but we have talked in the past about our favorite Halloween activities. It used to be fun to wander the Strip and look for original Halloween costumes. Anymore, the most popular Halloween costume seems to be Porn Star, followed by Slutty Vampire and even Sluttier Nurse. I mean, large plastic breasts are all well and good, but I don’t think they should really be the focal point of your Halloween attire. Most men would disagree with me, but with the right set of knockers the average woman could make the average man do whatever she wanted him to do. With ease. I guess my bottom line is that Halloween allows me to express myself for who I really am: a borderline crazy middle-aged woman who enjoys fucking with people. This Halloween will find me at somewhere like the Planet 13 dispensary. Lots of tourists, lots of things going on, and dear Mary Jane wearing her “Invisible Nightmare” costume, which is made of cellophane and covered with losing scratch offs, lighters that don’t light and pictures of disappointing ex-boyfriends. If you see me, you should probably run like hell!

BY MITCHELL S. BISSON, ESQ

The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers

I’d like to start off by apologizing to everyone for not having an article in last month’s issue of Vegas Cannabis Magazine, but I was abducted by the legal battle involving the Storm Area 51 event. If you watched the news at all last month, I’m sure you caught all the hype over the events. Well, I ended up finding myself smack dab in the middle of a legal battle between the mind behind the whole movement – Matty Roberts – and the little hotel in Rachel, NV that was throwing one of the alien-themed events. My client – Matty – originally planned to host his “Alienstock” event in Rachel with the hotel owner. After the hotel owner failed to follow through with proper planning and organization, Matty asked for answers… or at least confirmation that the hotel had the proper infrastructure and that the event would absolutely be safe. When he didn’t receive satisfactory answers, he backed out and moved his event Downtown. Anyways, the hotel owner moved forward with calling her event “Alienstock” anyways – my client’s intellectual property. Long story short, I was occupied with Cease and Desist letters and other Alien-related legal pleadings. But don’t worry, I’m back! And I don’t think I suffered any long-term effects from the abduction! When I last left off two months ago, I was discussing the lawsuit that was brewing between the State of Nevada and the losing applicants for this past year’s 66 new marijuana dispensary licenses. After over three months of hearings on whether or not the Court should issue an injunction (i.e., an order prohibiting the dispensaries from opening), Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez finally ruled that the state’s process was flawed and that most of the winning applicants permitting process needed to halt while the lawsuit worked its way through the legal system. Judge Gonzalez held that the Department of Taxation unlawfully selected winning applicants without fully doing background checks on all owners, officers, and board members of prospective marijuana companies. The Department of Taxation had elected to require background checks only for people holding a 5% membership interest or more. Said another way, as long as you owned less than 5% of the company, you did not need to go through any background checks. In her ruling, Judge Gonzalez pointed to the ballot measure that Nevada voters approved in 2016 that originally legalized recreational marijuana in the first place. The language of the law passed does not give the Department of Taxation wiggle room to decide not to run background checks on certain people. The language was clear that a background check must be done on “each prospective owner, officer, and board member” of a marijuana company in Nevada. However, background checks were done on all prospective owners for about 16 of the 66 new dispensary licenses – and Judge Gonzalez’s ruling allows those applications to move forward in the process. I think this is a pretty fair ruling. Judge Gonzalez is simply following the letter of the law that we voted to pass. I’m not sure how the ultimate trial on the matter will play out, but the Judge’s ruling is a pretty good glimpse at where her mind is at on how the law applies to the situation. All of this being said, it’s very likely the ruling will get appealed. In fact, by the time you are reading this, the appeal process will likely already be going on. Either way, it appears

that only sixteen more dispensaries are going to be opening up anytime in the near future. Moving on to the “Alarming News” section of this month’s article, it was recently discovered that there were batches of tainted cannabis being sold to the public here in the Las Vegas valley. On September 16, 2019, the Nevada Department of Taxation issued a health notice advising that the tainted cannabis was found at three Las Vegas dispensaries – Acres, The Apothecary, and Blackjack Collective. The affected cannabis (certain flower and pre-rolls cultivated by “D.H Alderbaran Inc.” and “Las Vegas Natural Caregivers”) was found to have high levels of yeast and mold. Of course, the product was immediately pulled from the shelves, but this never should have happened in the first place. And what makes this even more alarming is the fact that D.H Alderbaran Inc. and Las Vegas Natural Caregivers are the same two cultivators that were subject to a similar public health notice for tainted cannabis less than a month earlier – on August 23, 2019. Clearly the State of Nevada needs to take a good look at these two companies and see what is going on. This is unacceptable. In even further alarming news, the State of Nevada also announced that it is currently investigating cannabis testing laboratories to determine whether THC levels have been doctored and intentionally inflated. Of course, the health advisories mentioned above are reason alone to investigate the laboratories. Before each of the tainted products mentioned above made their way to the dispensary, they first had to pass screening at a licensed cannabis testing lab. Somehow the tainted cannabis got by. But now there are allegations that the cannabis testing laboratories are altering the THC numbers? This is also completely unacceptable and must be fully investigated. We as consumers must be confident that we are receiving the best product there is. If we can’t trust the labels on the product and the stamp-of-approval from the cannabis testing lab assuring us that the product is safe to consume, what makes legalized cannabis any different than the black-market cannabis? Other than ease of access I suppose. We rely on those labels and assurances when we go into a dispensary and make a purchase. If the State of Nevada doesn’t provide actual answers as to how this occurred, I think we need to throw a fit until they fully investigate and give the public a full report on what happened and what has been done to ensure it doesn’t happen again. And please explain what is being done about these apparently rogue cultivators pushing out subpar and tainted cannabis. The State of Nevada needs to strive to be the preeminent state when it comes to marijuana quality. And with news of shady licensure processes, tainted cannabis, and inflated THC levels, the State of Nevada needs to step it up and #StayWoke! TALES FROM THE CRIP

Contemporary Boogeymen For many of us, Halloween is one of the best holidays of the entire year. The insane summer temperatures have finally given way to the paradise that is Las Vegas weather the other nine months of the year. We dress up our children in a wide variety of costumes and delight in showing them off to friends and neighbors.

But my favorite monster? My favorite monster is the Vanity Monster, and you see evidence of its infestation everywhere you look. I absolutely adore Sandra Bullock, but I have not seen her change facial expressions since “Speed”.

54

My good friend Jeff, who is a dentist, spends months doing research on finding candy with the highest concentration of sugar that he can find and then passes them out liberally to his friends and their children. Shrewd, Jeff. Entertainment shifts subtly during October as well. My wife and I have an interesting television sharing program in our home. Basically, I get to watch pretty much whatever I want, whenever I want, at least until October. Television belongs to my wife in October because she takes fiendish delight in watching all of the scary programming. We all like Jason, we all like Freddy Kruger. To this day, I remain a HUGE fan of Leatherface and his wild antics in Texas. Sadly, no matter how frightening I might find the previously mentioned characters, I do not think that the current generation finds them nearly as spooky as I do. To this day, “The Exorcist” is the scariest movie I have ever seen, yet today’s youth is lucky if they have even heard of it. Who or what is the latest Chucky doll or Darkman that might scare the britches off of contemporary youth? Well, first off, there is the entity who I refer to as The Inconvenience Monster! Doesn’t that name alone send chills up your spine? Where might one encounter The Inconvenience Monster? Well, you know how sometimes you absolutely need Wi-Fi, yet cannot find it? BOOM! No Instagram for you! You know how when you have to get to work and either your car won’t start or your tire is flat? You have been visited by The Inconvenience Monster. How about when you are using Google maps to find a location, yet said address apparently does not exist? You guessed it! There is also the Specter of Unplanned Bills. Nothing is more terrifying than having your appendix explode and you don’t have adequate health insurance. Similarly, although not quite as expensive, is when your air-conditioner goes out and it’s 110° outside. Have you ever wondered how a chicken feels while it is roasting? You certainly won’t have to wonder any longer if the Unplanned Bill Specter visits you. Believe me. Closely related to this monster is the Student Loan Debt Voldemort. He will bleed you dry for YEARS, and the only way that you fuck him off is if you feed him on your blood/ income. Hopefully, your investment was worth

it. If not, nobody cares, unfortunately. You cannot even bankrupt your way out of student loan debt, which is the scariest part of all. But my favorite monster? My favorite monster is the Vanity Monster, and you see evidence of its infestation everywhere you look. I absolutely adore Sandra Bullock, but I have not seen her change facial expressions since “Speed”. She hangs out with the Vanity Monster, although not as bad as do some. Have you ever seen a person, man or woman, who looks like they are facing into a wind tunnel on high speed? Vanity Monster. How about the bald guy with salt and pepper on the sides and dark brown hair on top? Not only is that the Vanity Monster, but he is accompanied by his friend, The Goblin of Cluelessness. Truthfully, some toupees are so obvious that they couldn’t be more obvious unless they came with the chinstrap. Vanity is a bitch! Jason, Freddie, Jigsaw, even Cruella Deville are all scary in a movie theater. However, even I could out run The Mummy. Dracula doesn’t like garlic, so he will give me a wide berth. Unplanned medical bills, however? Now THAT is truly scary! In keeping with the Halloween spirit, I invited a promising local poet to create for this column a poem about her fears. Let me know if you like her work; perhaps I will invite her back. Panic Room By Melanie Grace A shade of panic sweeps the air, Visions on a mother’s soap box, Screaming shrill cries no one hears, sounds of solitude shatter through the room, The moment you become a parent you’re already in bed with fear, Then the horrifying reality you’re the only one, What if I’m gone from this world never to take another breath? What would become of my son’s life? Panic in the heartbeat while chills cover me whole, The sun begins to rise outside, I inhale the green cure and release the billowy smoke, light slices through like blades of life creeping into the black room, A new day has dawned into the room, I hear the doorknob turn, My son leaps into my bed, Diminishing all my thoughts and loving him whole, How blessed am I to have unconditional love, A mother and son forevermore.

There is a distinct energy shift that happens during this time of year. October brings autumn winds, the scent of campfires and burning leaves, Witchery abounds, and dreams become, well, dreamier. It’s the perfect time to break out a calming indica to celebrate these natural transitions. This strain is not for the newbie- this is an old school kind of flower, a relative of the OG Kush cultivar, familiar and soothing in its heavy, heavy head (and body) relaxation and pain-killing benefits. You’ll laugh, you’ll chill out, you’ll sleep like a Westside OG- ocean waves crashing outside of your window, kind of sleep. Excellent for insomnia, pain, stress and nausea, let the woodsy, earthy goodness soothe your soul.

I like to call these mini-joints from MMG Safety Meeting Jays or 5-Minute-Break Jays. Sometimes you just need to get relaxed and refocused to keep your head in the game. You don’t have time for a fat joint, but you need a little more than a bong load. Especially if you are alone and especially if, like me, you want to finish the whole joint once it’s started. With these MMG mini-joints, that’s never a problem. But don’t let size fool you, these little devils pack a punch. You’ll be back at it with a vengeance, relaxed and focused and ready to check projects off your list.

We can have dinner together, but we’ll have to go Dutch Treat. I want to pay for myself so that you don’t expect to get anything off of me after dinner. I’m not paying for you either, because I don’t want you feeling like you need to throw yourself on me for buying dinner. Dutch Treat is nice, because it levels the playing field and keeps things in the “Friend Zone.” This Dutch Treat backrolled joint that I twisted is kinda neat, and it’s my treat. Let’s smoke it up. It’s quite sweet, and the feeling you’ll get from it is tough to beat. By the time we’re faded, it’ll be time to eat. Where’s the meat?

Paired with this indica-dominant hybrid that brought on giggly, social and anti-anxiety euphoria, we laughed as Danny Trejo slashed bodies like a Mexican badass. The flavor of this flower is almost tropical, as mango-rich top notes, subtle banana tones and light limonene layers eased our worries and amped our appetites. We weren’t hungry for blood as we indulged and imbibed, but we did order UberEats, even though “Machete don’t text”. We digressed.

It smells lovely and has quite a few red hairs scattered throughout the jar. Those are the only “strands” I see in this strain. I can’t complain. I wonder how much fresh rosin this is going to flip into. I’d show you the final picture, but I haven’t pressed it yet. So instead, I’ll pop it up on Instagram. Tryke has really come a long way. In light of the digital era, we can lose our sense of community and neighborhood. Over the past almost four years, Culture & Cannabis has helped foster that. Promising to bring you bigger and better cannabis entertainment each month, C&C continues to top itself! Last month's event was one for the books. Every corner of what’s becoming a cannabisartist alley was covered with original work. Coordinated by Guerrilla Culture, the space hosted local artists to sell their work, perform live-art, and simply network with the community. The stage was graced by quite a few acts; with surprise performances from Angela Mazzanti and Patient Picasso, the Citrus pool-deck hosted a magnitude of talent! Sober Junkie may be a veteran among them, but a newcomer, Jalen Young, took the Culture & Cannabis stage for the first time. The Omni models waltzed the deck in the last of summer fashions from Mary Jane Runway! Glamour meets ganja with a variety of cannabis-kimonos and more. The night wrapped up with the usual stoner-shenanigans. Culture & Cannabis has had a long road to get to where it is today, but this industry is just getting started. Culture & Cannabis is completely for the people and by the people, priming it to be the city's biggest monthly cannabis event! Culture & Cannabis will once again return to the Citrus Rooftop at The Downtown Grand Hotel in October. Follow @cannabisandculture on Instagram for more information!

BRITTANY GOMEZ EXECUTIVE CHEF AT LAS VEGAS CANNABIS

Big things are happening over at Las Vegas Cannabis and this month we had the chance to sit down with their Executive Chef, Brittany Gomez to chat about what she's working on in the kitchen. VEGAS CANNABIS MAGAZINE: Tell us where you are from and how you landed in Vegas. BRITTANY GOMEZ: I came to Vegas a couple of years ago to help Verano open and launch their edible department, but I'm originally from Denver, Colorado. VCM: Are you a professionally trained chef or self-taught? BG: Funny enough, I went to school for healthcare administration. I have taught myself the majority of what I know, however, my mom is an amazing pastry chef and she has had a lot to do with my success in the industry. VCM: What brought you to Las Vegas Cannabis? BG: I came to Las Vegas Cannabis to help build a kitchen as well as create some fun edibles.

VCM: What products are you currently making? BG: Right now we're in full production of the Double Shot beverage line and putting the finishing touches on some others. VCM: What can we look forward to in the future from the Las Vegas Cannabis kitchen? BG: We will be launching vegan gummies and chocolate-covered coffee beans within the next couple of months. VCM: Outside of work, what types of foods are your favorites to infuse? BG: Outside of work, I love making infused French macarons, cupcakes, and seasonings to cook with. VCM: What challenges do you face in the kitchen when infusing that you wouldn’t normally encounter when cooking? BG: Aside from the regulatory hoops to jump through, you really have to be careful to mask the taste of cannabis. It's a strong taste, so it stands out easily. VCM: When deciding on products, are you conscious of healthy foods? Non-GMO, organic, vegan, etc. BG: Of course! You really have to be. I am always trying to create products that everyone can enjoy. VCM: What sets your products apart from what is already on the market? BG: I take a concept we have to create a unique item, then I spend a lot of time doing R&D and reformulating the recipe until we create something we are proud to introduce. VCM: What advice would you give to new chefs wanting to infuse with cannabis? BG: Be safe on dosing, but don’t limit yourself on what you can create! VCM: What inspires you? BG: I am inspired by how far the cannabis community has come, by how much we help each other grow, and the opportunities that lie ahead. Keep up with Brittany on Instagram @brittanyshaday_gomez and follow Las Vegas Cannabis on Instagram @whitelvbel and @doubleshotinfused.

>>>>> cannabis with DJ Chef Fred DIRECTIONS Chop the onion finely. Cook onions on medium heat until translucent. Turn off the heat and divide the sautéed onion in half (half for the medicated mushroom gravy and half for the patty).

Micro-Dosed, Medicated Mushroom Loco Moco

To Make Gravy: Cut mushrooms into quarters. Heat medicated olive oil in a small saucepan on medium heat and sauté mushrooms and also the medicated mushrooms until soft. Add the half of sautéed onion and stir together. Add 2 cups beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, and 2 Tbsp soy sauce. Skim any foam or scum on the surface. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. In a small bowl, combine cornstarch and 1 Tbsp. water and whisk well to mix together. Pour the cornstarch mixture into the gravy and thoroughly mix together. Simmer till the gravy thickens.

INGREDIENTS 2 small onion (½ for patty, ½ for gravy) 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil (for sautéing onions 3/4 lb ground pork/beef (¾ lb = ¼ lb pork + ½ lb beef) 1/3 cup panko crumbs 1 large egg 3 Tbsp milk 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 1 tsp salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil infused with 1 gram hash 1/2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil infused with

To Make Pattie: In a large bowl, add the meat and the rest of sautéed onion. Add panko crumbs, 1 egg, 2 Tbsp. milk, ½ tsp. nutmeg, 1 tsp. salt, and black pepper. Mix the meat well until the mixture gets sticky and then divide into 4. Make 4 large patties Toss each portion of mixture from one hand to the other hand repeatedly about 5 times in order to release air inside the mixture. In a large pan, heat ½ Tbsp. medicated olive oil over medium heat and place the patties gently on the pan. Serve steamed rice on individual plates. Transfer the patties to the plates, pour the gravy, and top with a fried egg. Add fresh medicated macaroni salad on the side. Serve immediately.

Many of my dishes are inspired by people around me I care about deeply. Music, art, cuisine, family, friendship, cannabis and culture bring my talents together. As we revolve around the sun, not all of us will make it for another trip. Older, wiser and constantly refining, meditating, thinking of the ones that are missed and lost and also the ones still fighting the fight alongside us. Medicated mushrooms will definitely take the edge off the PTSD.

VEGAS CANNABIS //

VEGAS CANNABISMAG.COM

Hey everyone, I hope you all enjoy these recipes! I tried going for something fun and spooky this month because Halloween is one of the holidays that let’s me know fall is here. Finally, it begins to cool off a bit for all of us here in Las Vegas. This dish has four different recipes to play with. Using a variety of techniques to deliver a quality THC/CBD product, that not only tastes great but looks cool for all us stoners- not to mention gets us “baked”.

Whipped Raspberry Chocolate Cheesecake Terpene Infused CBD worms

INGREDIENTS: 1 6 oz. Box of raspberry Jello 2 pkg. Unflavored Knox Gelatin 2-3 pkg. Bendable straws (stretch them out straight) 3/4 cup whipped cream 1/3 cup Nestle chocolate syrup or your preference 2 cups boiling water 2 oz. Frosty Cherry CBD infused coconut oil made from Happy Hemp Farmacy Hemp 23 drops Cheesecake Terpenes from The Terpene Lab HOW TO MAKE: 1. In a heat safe container mix your dry ingredients together. Jello and Gelatin. Bring your 2 cups of water to a boil. Add it to the Jello mixture. Mix thoroughly. 2. I added my chocolate next after about five minutes to let cool down a bit. 3. Add the Happy Hemp Farmacy CBD oil and mix well. 4. Add the whipped cream as the chocolate and oil should bring down the temperature. Mix thoroughly. 5. Once everything is mixed together and cooled to room temperature, add the final ingredient of The Terpene Lab Cheesecake Terpenes. (Shout out to Katia TheTerpenatrix!) 6. Tip: make sure the straws are placed into some type of cylinder or container that both holds the straws well and as high up as you can go. I found something that was about three inches short and it worked well for me. Rubber bands help hold it all together, too. 7. Once you have your completed mixture and it has cooled enough, begin pouring into the liquid using a cup with pour spout. Be careful not to overfill the container and spill the gelatin. 8. Keep in mind the straws will fill to the level of what is in the container you choose. Put straws in with the bendable side down as this adds to the worms final look. Store in fridge 4 or more hours. The longer the better as it gives all the ingredients a chance to become one. 9. Once COMPLETELY chilled, try to pull the straws from the fridge. Grab a cutting board and rolling pin. Turn your faucet on and use cold water

70

COOKING WITH

Halloween CannaBOOshi Special

Chris Rodarte to “warm up” the straws. Not too much is needed just enough to take the chill away. Place a filled straw on the cutting board and start rolling from the end. It should easily come out of the straw and...you just made an infused worm!

Edible Blood for Decoration INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/4 cup Nestle Chocolate Syrup 15-20 drops Red food coloring 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch

HOW TO MAKE: 1. I used a mason jar for mixing everything in this recipe. Add cornstarch and mix with corn syrup. 2. Mix all ingredients thoroughly in the mason jar. I just added the lid and gave it a vigorous shake. If you have to, mix well with spoon. 3. You should get a dark red and deep color in the end with this recipe. Put in fridge and save for later. Voila! Fake Blood

Canna“Boo”zey Jello Shots

INGREDIENTS: 6 oz. Box of lime Jello 1 pkg. Unflavored Knox Gelatin 1 1/2 cups of boiling water 3/4 cup Sour Diesel infused vodka via nitro cavitation or nitro-muddling depending on front/back of house groups 1 gram Kief Hash grated to a powder- I shaved about that off a 10 gram chunk I had 10-12 30 ml plastic syringes HOW TO MAKE: 1. In a heat safe container, place your dry ingredients. Jello, Gelatin, and Kief Hash powder. Mix thoroughly. 2. Once the water is boiling add it slowly to the dry Jello powder until mixed together.

3. Wait until almost room temperature to add the Infused vodka. 4. *Nitro Cavitation/Muddling Infusion*- I used a standard ISI whip cream dispenser. Add 1/8 oz. Sour Diesel to the empty container. Broken up with no stems, no seeds, no sticks. Then add your ¾ cup vodka of choice. The higher the proof, the “higher” Boom. Close everything up and use 2 nitro canisters to charge the device. Shake container well throughout the sitting period. Let sit for 15-20 minutes. Grab a cup and while holding the ISI canister upright, place above the nozzle and discharge the gas. I used my “LoveGlove” and a 190 Magical Butter Purify filter bag to remove the used flowers and you have just infused vodka via Nitro Cavitaton/ Muddling! 5. Make sure to keep everything mixed together and begin removing liquid with the syringes. I completely filled them to the max at 30ml *tip* drill out the holes to a bigger diameter so the shot can be done easier. ¼ works wonders guys. 6. Place them all in the fridge, openings upwards in cups and wait for them to cool. Wait a couple hours for your Canna”Boo”zey Shots to be done! These do not seem strong but looks are deceiving....

Canna“Boo”shi Infused Monster Mash Roll INGREDIENTS: 1 1 pound bag of Mahatma short grain sushi rice 12 oz. Snow crab meat steamed and water removed 1 cucumber julienned 1 roasted red pepper julienned 1 package of sushi nori 1/8 cup Frosty Cherry CBD infused coconut oil made from Happy Hemp Farmacy Hemp 1 cup Kewpie mayo or mayo of your choice 10 drops Black food coloring 10 drops Orange food coloring 2 cups Sour Diesel Infused CannaBushi vinegar 1 tsp. Sesame Oil HOW TO MAKE: INFUSED SUSHI RICE 1. First start off by washing the rice in a bowl with a strainer. Gently use cold water to rinse or “polish” the rice. The water will turn into a cloudy white as the starches are being removed. Continue until the water clears up. But try not to wash a lot. Make sure to remove dirty water and drain the rice each time you wash. No more than four times. 2. After draining rice make sure the water is out with the strainer and place into a rice cooker. Add equal water to each cup of rice. Cook as directed per your device. 3. Take cooked rice and split equally into two separate large bowls. Cover and grab your Infused CannaBushi vinegar. 4. Take your two cups of infused CannaBushi vinegar and place one cup each into two separate small bowls. 10 drops of each color worked best for me. Mix well. Depending on the grade of your food coloring, that

72

number can vary. Having this step prepared before the rice is complete is optimal. 5. While the rice is hot mix each of your infused vinegars to the bowls of rice. Mixing each so that the rice is completely dyed and covering the rice. No white rice grains should present. Cover and keep to the side, making sure to mix the rice again in 5 minutes. INFUSED SNOW CRAB MIX 1. In a large bowl place the crabmeat and CBD oil. Mix these two first very well and then add your mayo. Add the sesame oil. Mix it all together and place in fridge to chill. Having this step completed beforehand is optimal. MAKING OF THE MONSTER MASH ROLL 1. Grab your cutting board, makisu, and knife. 2. Place the nori onto cutting board and make sure to have a small bowl of water ready so you can handle the rice. 3. Start by dipping your hand in the water and rub your hands together so there's a slight amount of water lightly on each. Grab a small ball of rice and spread evenly on the nori. Make sure the rice has cooled and just a slight warmth. It should be a lot stickier now. 4. Make sure to cover all edges of the nori with rice and it should be evenly distributed to a ¼ inch thickness. This should be on a half sheet of nori. 5. Place roughly 3 1/2 oz crab mix in the center of the riced nori sheet. Also, put your cucumber and roasted red peppers that are julienned beside the crab. 6. Pull it to the end of the makisu and use your thumb to grab the makisu. Begin to bring it up and over to encapsulate the ingredients. 7. Make sure to have a seal created and have the seam on the cutting board. Take your hands and gently squeeze the roll so that it is shaped. Scoot the makisu to each and press the ends. Voila! You should have a sushi roll of either orange or black. 8. Repeat the process so that you have one roll of each color. 9. Cut into 8 pieces each and put to the side. 10.Grab a large plate and place the worms in the center. Make sure to stack it up high as it will settle and squirm! 11.Take four pieces of each color sushi roll around the pile in a circle with the colors going from orange to black until complete. 12.Take the blood and with a spoon place droplets around the edges of the plate so that it looks like the picture of even splatter it for more effect. 13.Congratulations you just made The Canna"Boo"shi Monster Mash Special! I hope you had a fun time making this recipe and have a great Halloween. PS this looks crazy under a blacklight! So I made sure to share that as well! Definitely enjoyed creating this recipe. Happy Halloween to you all!

Greg Chapin, Mike Richardson and Dennis Hicks As we move into our favorite time of year here in southern NV, that holiday that takes us all back to costumes and candy, tricks and treats, is upon us. Halloween! Every person reading these words can recall a memory that induces a smile. The conversation about what we should be, what theme, is ongoing all year long. My son Sabastian wants to be the “47 Ronnin” with his friends. It was suggested that I be the dragon and lose my head several times in a night. Taking up the challenge, I think deeply with the creative right side of my brain, I inhale deeply on this excellent “Cherry Blossom OG” vape cart and I see a Dragon in a mist dancing wildly as 47 blades (wrapping paper tubes) rise and descend until vanquished, and the final stroke descends. As the head falls forward the Velcro hinged head exposes the open neck of red gummy worms and strawberry gellie for the ghoulish samurai to devour. Memories for a lifetime. We try to be as creative with the menu of snacks for the adult swag bags. Always included are infused “caramel pecan Beetles from the Mummy”. The display will start with sweet angel hair pasta jello brain, always a favorite. As well as “Sloppy Joe” with finger crackers served in an open skull styrofoam head. Just a little food for thought. Marinate on it. Why not start off the 2019 holiday season with a bang. “Release the Hounds” let that kid inside, out for the day.

All Hallows Eve “Cherry Blossom Indica” White Bean & Bacon Chowder with 10K Gold “Millionaire” Bacon “A recipe has no soul. You, as the cook, must bring soul to the recipe.” - Thomas Keller INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup Cherry Blossom canna-oil (use one from our past issue recipes) 1/2 cup flour, melt butter and add flour to form a paste, cook for 3-5 min. until “blonde”, (this will cook the raw flour flavor out) (Chef’s note: When making gumbo the roux is cooked to the chocolate brown stage)

2 cup dried cannellini beans (soaked overnight) 1 cup bacon, cut into 1” strips (aka lardons in French) 1/2 cup onion, small diced 1 Tbsp garlic, chopped 1/2 cup carrots peeled and chopped 1/2 cup celery, chopped 1 Tbsp rosemary, chopped 1 Tbsp thyme, chopped 1 quart chicken stock/broth 1 cup chardonnay 2 Tbsp tomato paste 2 Tbsp butter, unsalted 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

PROCESS: Put bacon into a cold large stock pot and turn on heat to medium. As the bacon cooks it will release liquid “fat” known as rendering. Once bacon is crispy add chopped garlic and saute/stir just until garlic turns golden brown, then add onion, celery and carrot (mirepoix), tomato and ½ of the herbs. Cook down until carrots start to brown. Add white wine (deglaze) “reduce” or boil wine down until just syrupy (Au sec/dry). Add chicken stock, beans and cook until beans are soft, finish with roux and whipping cream. Adjust salt and pepper. (Chefs Note: Spilled brown sugar on your bacon? This is how “Millionaire Bacon” was discovered) Cook strips of bacon (rasher) with a touch of brown sugar and cayenne pepper, pour soup into baked sugar pumpkins and garnish with “Millionaire Bacon” “That’s Amore!”
