Maxine Fensom is quite the business woman and according to Forbes, she’s the “mistress of sin.” As founder of Las Vegas Cannabis Tours, Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings, Elevate Jayne, Maxine’s Gentlemen’s Club, Tinsel Glamour, and Las Vegas Glam Squad, she faces challenges head on. Her energy and ambition is unmatched and I couldn’t wait to talk to her and find out where she came from and why she jumped into the Nevada cannabis industry.

STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Tell me about your background, where are you from, and what did you do prior to the cannabis industry?

MAXINE FENSOM: I was born in Brisbane, Australia, where I got my start as a professional troupe dancer before I had a bit of a rise to fame through a daily horoscope segment on the “In Melbourne Today” news program. After that, I leveraged my position as a one-time Playboy Australia “Playmate of the Month” to become sort of a pioneer in Australia’s adult industry. In 2000, I established the Australian Adult Industry Awards and then founded the national Miss Erotica and Miss Dream Girl pageants. I successfully launched Maxine’s Gentlemen’s Club in Melbourne, Australia which is still thriving and one of the most popular hot spots there to this day.

SS: What brought you to Las Vegas?

MF: Well, it’s a bit of a sad story. My long-term partner unexpectedly died, and I realized that I needed a new venture because it was just too difficult for me to continue our businesses without him. I was given a strip club in Las Vegas, due to the success of Maxine’s Gentlemen’s club in Australia. However, there was just too much red tape and I ultimately decided that I didn’t want to jump through those hoops or risk my upstanding business reputation. Also, I believe that the men that were currently in that industry here couldn’t deal with the fact that I had more experience in the strip club and hospitality industries than them, so they kind of blocked any progress I made. Then, I launched Sin City Foodie Tours, but the pandemic came, and due to health and safety restrictions, that business wasn’t grabbing anyone’s attention at the time. So, as the entrepreneur I am, I knew I needed to pivot and find a new venture. I have always been an advocate for cannabis and wanted to bring the mystique behind the industry to the masses.

SS: Tell me about Las Vegas Cannabis Tours. Why and when did you start the company? How does it work for patrons wanting to experience the tours?

MF: I was previously exposed to the cannabis-tourism industry in another country and I thought how cool would it be to bring it here to Las Vegas, so I launched Las Vegas Cannabis Tours in the Fall of 2020. I use my tours as a way to demystify the legalized cannabis industry for my tour guests, which will hopefully contribute to the destigmatization of cannabis.

Through Las Vegas Cannabis Tours I offer several unique industry experiences including visits to famed dispensaries, a grow house, a cannabis museum, glass blowing and more. Each tour is two and a half hours long (excluding the Get High and Fly Tour which also includes a helicopter ride over the Las Vegas Strip) and can accommodate as little as one to fifteen guests at a time. Tours are also available for large groups and private tours, in addition to fully customizable experiences. General tour prices range from $85 per person to $425 per person and can be viewed on our website.

SS: Tell me about Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings. What prompted you to start this business and what does it entail?

MF: Well, really Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings sparked from Las Vegas Cannabis Tours. A lot of my tour guests were asking where they could get married with a cannabis theme. So, I thought to myself that’s my next business venture, Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings. Plus, I believe cannabis is such a magical herb that can really help people! Through Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings I’ve been able to see first-hand the way that it has helped so many couples get through some really difficult and traumatic times and has strengthened their love. I’m actually an ordained minister and find so much joy being able to marry couples and offer them such a unique, fun way to do so!

SS: Cannabis themed weddings, how cool! Since this is the month of love, do you have any specials running?

MF: We sure do! For the month of February, we are offering a “Hugs & Nugs” wedding package. SS: With the lounges opening, do you see the tours, weddings or both being actively involved? If so, do you have anything in the works?

MF: Yes, I absolutely see both businesses being involved. The implementation of cannabis lounges will elevate both businesses drastically! Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings will be able to finally have receptions that include cannabis consumption. The entire wedding party can bond over their love of cannabis and revel in their cannabis themed wedding! Las Vegas Cannabis Tours will also be changed for the better because we will be able to have specific tour stops dedicated to consumption.

I can’t say exactly what I have in the works yet, but I’m excited for when I am able to come out with those announcements.

SS: I can’t wait for the announcements. Do you work exclusively with any dispensaries or brands?

MF: Las Vegas Cannabis Weddings has partnered with Planet 13, exclusively, using the mega dispensary as a wedding venue for my canna couples looking to say “I Doobie.”

SS: That’s awesome. What can we expect from your companies in the future?

MF: Great things! Once consumption lounges are ingrained into the Las Vegas cannabis culture, I see my businesses elevating on a whole new level. I’ll be able to provide my guests the opportunity to not just appreciate cannabis but to also consume it.

SS: What changes would you like to see made in the industry?

MF: I would love to see the cannabis lounges built! That’s what I’m most excited about right now when it comes to the industry as a whole, but especially in Las Vegas.

And more importantly, I’d love to see more women in the cannabis industry. I’d like women to be able to shatter that glass ceiling to be in more prominent positions within the cannabis world. I’d also love to see this male-dominated industry show more respect to business women entering the industry.

SS: I love that. As a woman business owner in the cannabis industry, have you experienced any unexpected hardships?

MF: Absolutely, but not much more than I had experienced in the adult entertainment industry. Both industries are dominated by males, who have tried to bully me, push me out, and tell me I’d never make it in the industry. I used this bullying to help me grow thicker skin and command the respect that I deserve as a business woman and entrepreneur.

CCB AWARDS SEVEN OF TEN PROSPECTIVE LICENSES TO CEIC GRADUATES FOR INDEPENDENT SOCIAL EQUITY CANNABIS CONSUMPTION LOUNGES

Over 50 percent of social equity independent licenses were awarded to graduates of CEIC’s Pathway

To Ownership Cannabis Business School

On November 30, 2022, The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB) issued 20 independent cannabis consumption lounge licenses, half of which (10) are designated for social equity applicants at the Random Number Selection Event. Seven graduates of Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community (CEIC) Pathway To Ownership Cannabis Business School are awardees.

“The hope is that these new social equity licenses not only allow for new ownership and opportunities in the cannabis industry but also, that they ultimately benefit the people and the communities that have been negatively impacted by previous drug policy,” said CCB Executive Director Tyler Klimas.

During the 10-day application window, held in October, the CCB received a total of 79 complete and paid applications for cannabis consumption lounge licenses in the independent categories (30 applicants for nonsocial equity, and 49 for social equity). Over 50 percent of social equity independent licenses were awarded to graduates of CEIC’s Pathway To Ownership Cannabis Business School.

Amanda Staten, Founder/CEO of Rolling Cloudz LLC, and graduate of Cannabis Business School shared that “Watching the CCB live stream during the random license selection and seeing The Rolling Cloudz’ application number scroll across the screen, I knew that in that moment, our lives would be changed forever… this is a chance of a lifetime to begin building a legacy for my family based on something I have always been so passionate about.”

Chandler Cooks, the Dean of Students, states that the CEIC team are “working diligently to build coalescence between those awarded licensees and those graduates who weren’t awarded a license. There are plenty of available opportunities from investment to employment.”

Dean Cooks encourages those interested in supporting the forthcoming independent social consumption lounges to stay up to date with CEIC’s new podcast discussing updates, glories, and trials and tribulations of the licensing process and beyond. All the cannabis-centric changes and reforms that have been implemented in Nevada since 2018 are legislative proof that just because a state legalizes cannabis recreationally, the battle for widespread cannabis reform within that state is far from over. Large-scale expungements never happened and criminal record sealing opportunities for previous cannabis “offenders'' didn't fully come into existence until the summer of 2020. Meanwhile, social equity measures weren’t tangibly included in any Nevada legislation until Assembly Bill 341 passed by a majority in the Legislature in 2021. These major changes all occurred years after Question 2 passed in 2016; proving that the battle for legalization is just the first of the many that advocates and communities will have to fight for in the Legislature if truly reformative cannabis policies are to be implemented.

As part of this ongoing fight, the Chamber of Cannabis will be organizing a lobbying day

on April 10th for the 2023 Nevada Legislative Session in Carson City. After a tumultuous year for Nevada’s industry, where an overall shrinkage in retail sales, layoffs across bigger and smaller operators alike were among the lowlights of a year characterized by market stagnation. Given the current landscape of the market, the passionate leaders, advocates, and professionals employed by the industry could certainly use the lobbying and activism efforts; a statement that Chamber of Cannabis President Tina Ulman would agree with.

“The last year for the industry has been tough,” said Ulman. “We’ve seen an overall decline in sales, an increase in people losing their jobs and we’ve seen a reduction in capital being invested in the market. The CCB unfortunately has not implemented any of the revisions and solutions that the Chamber and other market leaders have suggested regarding regulations that would significantly improve commerce and reduce cost for many operators. It’s very

disappointing.”

The cumbersome regulations Ulman is referring to span everything from cultivation taxes to newly implemented regulations that have blind-sided operators, to onerous and potentially wasteful packaging regulations and restrictions. This lack of change in Nevada cannabis regulations remains despite the Chamber delivering over 30 public comments and more concerns about how these regulations were problematic and both cost and time-consuming.

Even with the hardships that Nevada’s cannabis industry is currently facing during this period of economic downturn in America, there are milestones to celebrate. After a years’ long battle for lounges and many more months of regulatory planning, cannabis consumption lounges will finally be a reality in Nevada. Furthermore, cannabis DWI (driving while intoxicated) laws in regards to remaining

metabolites in your system have changed statewide. This legislation means that drivers won’t get a DWI on their record just because there is cannabis in their system, unless there is a loss of life or extensive property damage in a car accident.

Despite these victories, an industry still very much in its infancy stage like the Nevada cannabis industry could always use further advocacy and lobbying and having a supportive relationship with the state Legislature doesn’t hurt, either. Because of this, the dedicated army of cannabis professionals and advocates with the Chamber of Cannabis will be venturing up to our state capital on April 10th to continue to advocate for legislative support behind the Nevada cannabis industry and community.

“Since we only have the ability to change policy every two years when the Nevada Legislature meets, we would really like to see more collaboration from our regulatory body. We want to work with them to address concerns in the market and implement sustainable and viable solutions. That was one of the main focuses of the Chamber in 2022 and that will be one of the main focuses in 2023 along with passing two additional pieces of legislation regarding justice and commerce.”

As for what those strategic and legislative focuses are for 2023, they include measures that stand to greatly impact the Nevada cannabis industry and its estimated 11 to 14,000 employees. Among the measures that the Chamber of Cannabis will be lobbying for both on April 10 as well as throughout 2023, is a measure that doubles the daily purchase limit from one ounce of flower to two and 3.5g of concentrate to 7g.

“The reason we feel that these initiatives are so important is because they will help every entity in the supply chain. From cultivators to producers, retailers and down to store team members who are likely getting judged on sales and probably not receiving bonuses. It will not only make us more competitive with other states, this measure will also help mitigate the unlicensed market by being able to provide people with the option to buy more in one transaction. We do not support any additional enforcement on the unlicensed market, or any other war on drug tactic. We need to have high quality affordable cannabis that people are able to purchase more of in one transaction.”

The second measure that the Chamber will be lobbying for is a measure that’s long overdue for Nevada cannabis, especially because Nevada’s Legislature so strongly emphasized social equity and established a mandate in the language of 2021’s Assembly Bill 341 for the CCB and the industry to right the many wrongs caused by Nevada’s previous horribly draconian cannabis policies that are now mostly repealed.

“The second measure the Chamber will be focusing on is to allow ex-offenders to work in the cannabis industry.” Ulman explained. “Unfortunately when Question 2 was passed, there was no justice within the bill to help those affected by the failed War on Drugs. If you have served your sentence you should get the opportunity to be a contributing member of the community and reenter the workforce. Let the business decide if they want to hire them, not the government.”

“The Chamber focuses on commerce, justice and the community and we know that if these two bills pass they will progressively affect all our pillars.”

As for the lobbying and advocacy day on April 10th itself, the day’s main objectives will be meeting with Nevada legislators to inform them of why Nevada cannabis industry professionals believe these measures would be beneficial for the industry. While Nevada isn’t a state that excludes citizen-created ballot measures like Texas, bills like SB33 need to be voted upon by the Legislature, so the importance of lobbying days such as the upcoming April 10th event can’t be understated.

“We know that policy makers aren’t experts in cannabis, and we don't expect them to be. We do however expect them to listen to their constituents and allow us to provide them with factual information that will support the passing of SB33 and help save a struggling industry and restore justice.”

As for 2023, the year that will likely see the opening of consumption lounges across Nevada and turn the state into a mecca of Mary Jane, the Chamber of Cannabis will continue their bi-monthly meetings in both Las Vegas and Reno as well as hosting notable and influential individuals in Nevada cannabis.

passed, we plan on continuing to connect our community and industry. Our bi-monthly meetings allow chamber members and cannabis professionals the opportunity to create and build new partnerships and be a catalyst for change. Can I Donate Blood if I Consume Cannabis?

Below you will find answers to the most commonly asked questions about cannabis use and blood donation, taken from the American Red Cross website.

Bottom Line:

The use of cannabis does not disqualify an individual from blood donation, but potential donors cannot give if their use of cannabis impairs their memory or comprehension.

The Red Cross does not test blood donations for the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the principal psychoactive component of the cannabis plant.

“If you use synthetic marijuana, either as K2 or Spice, or as a prescription medication such as Marinol, you cannot donate blood.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Red Cross discourage cannabis consumers from donating blood?

No. The Red Cross encourages all eligible donors who feel well to make an appointment to give blood by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

Do I need to wait to donate after using cannabis, and if so why?

There is no data that specifies how long an individual should wait between cannabis use and blood donation. Please do not present to donate if your use of cannabis is impairing your memory or comprehension.

Doesn’t the Red Cross have to follow guidelines put out by the Drug Enforcement Administration—the same agency that classifies cannabis as a Schedule One drug?

Eligibility to donate blood is regulated the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, not the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The FDA does not require blood collectors to test for THC.

Does the Red Cross ever test blood samples for THC? No.

What if I consume high-THC-percentage products like waxes or dabs; does that disqualify me?

No. Again, we ask that you do not present to donate if your use of cannabis is impairing your memory or comprehension.

I'm a heavy cannabis consumer. Can a transfusion recipient fail a drug test if they receive my blood? No.

Can I donate blood to the Red Cross if I take prescribed synthetic marijuana (the FDA uses the term "synthetic cannabinoids") or recreational varieties like K2 and Spice?

The FDA does not have universal guidelines regarding synthetic marijuana (a.k.a “synthetic cannabinoid”) and leaves decisions about the acceptability of donations from these users up to local blood centers. This is because they are in the best position to know if disqualifying contaminants have been turning up in their areas.

Whether the synthetic marijuana you take is a prescribed medication or a recreational variety, our best advice is to contact our Red Cross Donor and Client Support Center at 1-702-791-3311.

Do different guidelines apply to cannabis or synthetic marijuana consumers who want to donate platelets or plasma specifically? For a cannabis user donating platelets or plasma, the guidelines are the same as they are for donating whole blood.

For synthetic marijuana users, there are concerns that some varieties of non-prescription synthetic marijuana have been found to contain certain anticoagulants known to contaminate plasma.

According to guidelines set forth by the Red Cross, other restrictions for blood donors include:

A piercing or tattoo within the last year

Pregnancy or recent childbirth

Steroid use

Weighing less than 110 pounds

Any illness presenting with fever

Low iron levels, which may signify anemia

Traveling to a malaria-risk country within the past 3 years

HIV or hepatitis infection

Ivan Moody's Greenings Launches at Exhale

Five Finger Death Punch lead vocalist, Ivan Moody, celebrated the launch of his new cannabis brand, Greenings, at Exhale Dispensary in Las Vegas on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

The Las Vegas-based rockstar was greeted by two hundred excited fans who lined up hours in advance for a chance to meet Moody and be the first to stock up on his new wellness products, after a rumor of his appearance was teased online.

Before his departure, Moody hopped on an electric skateboard and rolled through Exhale’s drive-thru window to commemorate the brand’s launch by ordering some Greenings pre-rolls, flower and gummies.

CANNABINOID CLOSE UP Cannabigerol (CBG)

By now, the word “cannabinoid”, especially variations of cannabinoids such as “Cannabidiol” (also known as CBD) and “Tetrahydrocannabinol” (THC) are terms that many are familiar with. If you’ve experimented with THC or CBD, you may also be curious to learn more about the benefits of cannabinoids. Simply put, cannabinoids are any of the various organic substances which are found in cannabis.

The cannabis plant produces cannabinoids naturally, and these chemicals react with receptors in the body through the endocannabinoid system. This system is what allows us to receive the effects (and benefits) of the use of cannabinoids. One of the more obscure cannabinoids, cannabigerol (CBG), is gaining some attention for its medicinal benefits. CBG isn’t present in extensive amounts in a lot of cannabis strains, however it is a cannabinoid that deserves a closer look. CBG has shown to have a profound effect on certain physiological issues, including decreasing inflammation in test studies, including the treatment of inflammatory symptoms of bowel disease and some forms of cancer. The endocannabinoid receptors are common within the framework of the

eye, and CBG is believed to be especially successful in the treatment of glaucoma since it diminishes intraocular strain. It is a ground-breaking aid in widening blood vessels, which benefits many health conditions where proper blood flow is a concern. CBG is also known to have positive neuroprotective impact.

Animals that suffered with the inflammation of bowel disease were treated with CBG and observed to have decreased inflammation. In another study, mice with Huntington’s disease (which causes the brain to have nerve cell degeneration) who were treated with CBG showed neuron protective results. In addition to having a positive effect on inflammatory and neurological conditions, CBG is being looked at as a promising treatment for cancer. Receptors that can cause cancer cells to multiply were stunted from growing as a result of CBG usage. More thorough testing showed colorectal cancer cells inhibited, which decreased the rate at which colon cancer grows. Tumors and synthetically induced carcinogenesis of the colon was inhibited after the use of CBG as treatment. This is fantastic news for cancer patients and patients afflicted by inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases!

Further studies have shown that CBG is beneficial as a bacterial agent. Certain strains of the potentially deadly MRSA virus have shown to be resistant to multiple types of drugs. However, over the past several decades, cannabis in topical form has been effective as a treatment for MRSA infections of the skin. In the past, the chemical makeup of the cannabis plant was evasive to medical experts. We now know that cannabigerol is the cannabinoid that is responsible for these incredible results.

A 2017 investigation demonstrated that a purified type of CBG worked extremely well as an appetite stimulant. For patients who suffer with loss of appetite, nausea, unwanted weight loss and muscle atrophy as side effects of cancer and other diseases, CBG is a natural option. Similarly, CBG proves to be effective in keeping muscle contractions at bay which can be beneficial for people who suffer with dysfunctional bladders. Researchers are elated with the possibilities that CBG presents in the form of a natural, organic treatment for patients who deal with a myriad of illnesses, stresses and disorders. Due to its non-psychotropic profile, cannabigerol offers a multitude of options as treatment for conditions previously listed, as well as an analgesic and an antidepressant.

CSN Workforce and Economic Development Launches Cannabis Certificates for Nevada Industry

The Division of Workforce and Economic Development at the College of Southern Nevada is partnering with Green Flower, a national leader in cannabis education, to offer in-demand programs to support the rapidly growing cannabis industry. There are three certificate programs - Advanced Dispensary Associate, Advanced Manufacturing Agent, and Advanced Cultivation Technician.

"Partnering with the Las Vegas community and the needs of its workforce is always a priority for the Division of Workforce and Economic Development. Each course starts with the basics of compliance. NEVADA CONSUMPTION LOUNGES An Interview with Steve Yeager

The arduous fight for cannabis consumption lounges in Nevada has been anything but expedient or quickly won. The fight for fully recreational cannabis in the Silver State was surely lengthy and had many different battles on many fronts. Some would argue Nevada cannabis advocates especially had an advantage in this fight for legal adult-use of cannabis given not only Las Vegas’ but also most of Nevada’s policies on adultcentered vices that are considerably more lenient than many other American cities and states.

If anyone requires any evidence of Nevada’s lenient policies on adult vices, just take a trip out to Pahrump and pick up some fireworks any day of the year and visit the number of brothels and 24/7 dispensaries out there.

However even though the passing of Question 2 in 2016 was beneficial overall in terms of tax revenue amounts and job creation, the implementation of recreational cannabis in Nevada was incredibly and almost irresponsibly quick. While Nevadans no longer having a risk of being arrested and receiving criminal records for low-level cannabis possession is undeniably a useful measure, there was no inclusion of what would become known as social equity or any similar attempt at inclusion

of people from communities disproportionately impacted and torn apart by Nevada’s previous draconian policies on cannabis.

Furthermore, not a single expungement-like or criminal record sealing opportunities were present in the legislation of Question 2 whatsoever, meaning those with victimless cannabis-related charges on their record would have to continue suffering from the societal disadvantages of those charges. In fact, a mass expungement measure wasn’t even enacted until almost three years later in June of 2020, well into the first few months of uncertainty during the pandemic when matters related to the COVID-19 virus nearly dominated every news cycle.

Luckily though, Assembly Bill 341 took far longer to craft and implement. It was passionately advocated for by influential cannabis activist organizations in Nevada. Public defender-turned-District 9 State Assemblyman Steve Yeager crafted the piece of legislation and AB 341 was discussed and debated extensively in the Legislature before passing by a ⅔ majority in both the Assembly and Senate. With a very obvious majority, AB 341 made its way to soon-to-be former Governor Sisolak’s desk, being signed into law during the last few days of the 2021 Legislative Session.

Over the next 18 months after AB 341 was signed by Sisolak, many public hearings occurred for a total of four different committees followed by months of crafting exactly how many licenses would be allocated and how social equity would truly and fairly be included into the consumption lounge licensing process and subsequent mini-industry that will be created. The implementation process lasted over double the time that the implementation of Question 2 took. Although the consumption lounge licenses have officially been handed out, the construction and initial operations of these lounges will show that this implementation process is far from over.

Still though, Nevada cannabis advocates who’ve long fought for social equity measures in the state’s cannabis industry can rejoice, as it surely appears that the social equity language contained in AB 341 was truthfully enacted and has been included in the licensing process. The language of AB 341 promised at least ten different licenses going to social equity applicants and on the list of all businesses and LLC’s that received licenses, there are exactly ten social equity licenses listed. Given how rare it is for a groundbreaking piece of legislation like AB 341 to be truthfully implemented one hundred percent of the way in America, the fact that the Cannabis Compliance Board and state lawmakers stayed true to their promise of at least ten social equity licenses should be considered quite a victory for Nevada cannabis advocates.

Another victory that cannabis advocates should celebrate is that Assemblyman Steve Yeager, the representative responsible for pushing AB 341 through every part of the legislative process, won his re-election this past November. Even further, Yeager was appointed the Speaker-elect

of the Assembly by the Nevada Democratic Caucus, meaning that he’ll almost certainly be sworn in on the first day of this upcoming legislative session. Assuming Yeager is sworn in, this means that one of Nevada cannabis’ most dedicated legislative representatives will hold tremendous power in the Assembly.

“It’s really exciting that we’re at this point,” Yeager said when speaking about the entire process of creating and certifying AB 341, “I sort of feel like I’m running a marathon and I can finally see the finish line. It seems like it’s been a long time because we finished our Legislative session back in June of 2021. I knew this would be a long process, but I’m definitely excited that we’re finally there. Licenses have been granted and the Clark County Commission has just passed their regulations.”

Yeager commended the social equity and cannabis reform organization Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community and their founder who chaired the Social Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, A’Esha Goins, for how they greatly assisted social equity applicants in the lengthy process of submitting the application for a license.

“I feel like there’s enough support in the community to really want to make this work. We’re giving all the applicants, in particular the social equity applicants, as much support as we possibly can to help them succeed and get into this industry. And that was the whole point of this provision. It was to diversify the industry and give folks a chance who were negatively impacted by policies we can all agree were heavy-handed and unnecessary.”

Working for years in the Public Defenders’ Office, Yeager has seen first-hand how detrimental those previous policies were against entire communities in Nevada.

“The consequences of those policies were far-reaching. There’s still people struggling with unemployment, having this criminal record follow them. We have record sealing and we’ve tried to do that over the years, but that’s pretty recent for a lot of people. They had to carry this baggage around for years and years, which put them behind where they otherwise would have been when it comes to employment opportunities.

What you’re seeing now is a recognition that we didn’t get this right and we have to try to do what we can to write those wrongs. That’s why I’m really encouraged by the amount of support I’ve seen in the Nevada cannabis industry for social equity and for opening up the industry to folks who traditionally would not have been able to participate.”

Yeager agrees that the first few months of consumption lounges will certainly be an experiment into how the lounges operate and what exactly consumers and patrons will prefer or be attracted to when they choose which lounge to patronize. As a consumption lounge program as large and numerous as Nevada has yet to be implemented, it’ll be a major first

for American cannabis culture and usage as a whole. And with the added variable of the millions of annual tourists that visit Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe, this experimental period could transpire well over a year.

“Of course, my hope is that these lounges open and they’re wildly successful and they solve some of the issues we’re having with public consumption now and that into the future, we look at granting additional licenses based on the success and safety of the ones that are operating.”

When asked about what the ideal consumption lounge resembles to him, Assemblyman Yeager wasn’t too strict about theme, concept or ambience. Although, the Assemblyman about to serve his fourth term envisions the perfect consumption lounge as one where “the Cannabis Compliance Board is working directly with the licensees and has a collaborative relationship with the lounges instead of an antagonistic relationship.”

“The lounges have to be safe.” Yeager stressed. “They have to fit in the community that they’re in. People have to feel good about them being there. All of those things remain to be determined. But I’m confident with the people working in the industry that it will be a priority.”

The regulations as to exactly what type of establishment a consumption lounge could be is vague and open to both interpretation and creativity. From coffee shops to yoga studios to bowling alleys and even a full-service hotel, AB 341’s potential for great variety and specialty within the mini-industry of Nevada consumption lounges is exponential. For all the 90’s kids, I would imagine that a cannabis-centered “barcade” similar to the Emporium at Area 15 full of 90’s arcade classics but with cannabis substituting alcohol would be tremendously successful.

With the wide array of Michelin star-deserving cannabis chefs across Nevada and nearby California, the possibility of luxury restaurants on par with the Capital Grille are entirely possible given the language of AB 341. However as with any cannabis venture in the most regulated of all the Legal States, any consumption lounge will initially be even more meticulously regulated than the already existing canna-businesses.

And as canna-business owners may now be able to host experiences such as a comedy club, the number of jobs created by the opening of the consumption lounges will give a much-needed economic boost to the Nevada cannabis industry going through a decline in overal sales.

“My hope is that in the future, whether it’s the CCB or a local government, that they continue to re-evaluate their regulations to figure out what the exact regulatory structure is. You have to ensure public safety but you also have to give businesses the space to succeed and overregulating is not the way to do that.”

Treating venereal tumor with cannabis and chamomile suppositories

Two years ago I rescued mother and daughter, Luna and Lala, from a puppy mill. They were in very bad shape, but were helped by using topical cannabis and chamomile remedies both by ingesting and topically.

After having a year and a half of a good life with me, Luna passed away early in 2022. It was estimated she was around nine years old, having lived seven years or so in the puppy mill, used and abused for her beauty.

Lala lived her first four years in the mill, and left with a sexually transmitted disease (STD), a venereal tumor in her vagina, common in the puppy mills here.

Note: The puppy mill was not run by Mexicans, but Americans. Most of the dog, cat, and even horse rescues here in Baja California, where I live, are run by non-Mexicans for the greater good. And the young people of Mexico, in general, are getting their pets spayed and neutered in the clinics provided, where traditionally it just wasn’t done here.

Plants Or Pharma?

The veterinarian in Mexico that I worked with said this type of cancer doesn’t kill them, it’s just uncomfortable and can cause complications as it grows. Low-dose chemotherapy is commonly used.

I told her about the work I do and my apothecary work at home, and she was in agreement that I could try the cannabis/plant suppositories first, and save the chemo for later, if need be.

She also understood that if I chose the chemo I would still give Lala the cannabis oil through the treatments, as it quells the negative side effects of the treatment namely, pain, sickness, and wasteaway - while it assists in cancer cell death. The plant actually has to work double-duty in this respect.

That was two years ago and the plants have managed to keep the tumor at bay all this time with no chemo done to date. But, whether you use cannabis, chemotherapy, or radiation to put cancer into remission, studies show that cancer can come back, and oftentimes worse than the initial bout, causing secondary cancers in different places in the body other than where the original cancer or tumor was.

I had been without cannabis oil for some weeks, after having two batch failures using bad alcohol, when the tumor came back larger than before. This caused Lala’s back legs to go into partial paralysis, which was terrifying, to say the least.

Feeling beyond guilty as a dog mom, out of cannabis oil, I made suppositories out of a simple chamomile/coconut infusion I typically put in capsules for anxiety (Bisabolol is the active terpene in chamomile that causes the calming effect).

Anecdotally Driven

The reason I remotely thought the chamomile would work was based on a prior experience with a cancer patient in Stage 4, who used chamomile suppositories, and started to come back within 24 hours from being bedridden. Unfortunately, the family didn’t believe it, the treatment was stopped, and she passed shortly thereafter.

This anecdotal story of chamomile helping a cancer patient is not supported by any human studies. The study found chamomile having a 93 percent success rate in killing cancer cells was done in a laboratory in a petri dish. I had used the chamomile coconut formulation on minor skin cancers with success.

So, with this small bit of knowledge, I proceeded to treat Lala every three to

four hours with a one gram suppository of chamomile and coconut, starting mid-day and into the night (using a suppository inserter into her vagina). By morning she was up and walking around, with the swelling on her backside substantially reduced.

The fact that chamomile and many other beneficial herbs able to treat serious ailments have been reduced to a cup of tea or a food flavoring is a travesty of epic proportions, in my mind.

Plants and Cancer

Another study on chamomile and cancer cell death states, “chamomile has many health promoting effects, including anti-allergic and anti-cancer activities.”

On the other end of the spectrum, Breast Cancer.org, advises the use of chamomile tea as a mouth rinse to treat sores from chemotherapy. It’s also suggested for use as a sleep aid.

But, again, this reduces chamomile to a tea, not a strong concentrate able to treat much more than mouth sores from treatment. Chamomile in a concentrate is also a strong analgesic, able to quell substantial pain, via the compound, chamazulene.

Another study shows the compound carvacrol is a naturally occurring antioxidant found in oregano, thyme, marjoram and many other herbs. All were shown to have upwards of a 96 percent rate in killing cancer cells in a laboratory study. As stated, “Carvacrol alone shows the potential to target cancerous cells and significantly deter the growth of cancer cells; this is a targeted method. It offers

anti-inflammatory effects by decreasing oxidative stress, which primarily targets ER and mitochondria.”

The theory that cancerous lesions come back is based on the knowledge that they live in our stem cells, due to toxins in our environment, found in our bloodlines from generations of exposure. We have been poisoned by our own hand, while simultaneously being led away from the garden for decades.

Nevermind Adam and Eve and modesty issues, the garden is where the fruits, vegetables, and herbs are that we need to keep us in homeostasis, or a place where illness cannot dwell. That’s what plants do for us.

I’m a guilty meat eater, but lean heavily on plants due to this knowledge. A Vegetarian or Vegan diet not only eases the destruction of the planet and the suffering of animals. Eating a plant-based diet addresses all our biological systems and helps deal with the toxins we’ve been subjected to.

To drive this theory home, another study shows that adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet for just two weeks lifts endorphins and creates dopamine in the brain, treating depression. According to a study out of Harvard, this also has to do with gut health, affecting our physical and emotional stability.

Cancer Comes Back

It’s been several days and my Lala is doing well, with the tumor successfully shrunken once more using just the chamomile coconut formulation. We may be dealing with this tumor for the rest of her life, but today, the plants are working.

As said, even with modern-day pharmaceuticals and treatments, cancer can come back. I’d rather she and I go through the hassle of the suppositories nightly than have

her go through the pain of chemo, which kills so many cells within the body - not just the bad cells.

Chemotherapy weakens the immune system like nothing else. How ironic is that, when treating a disease that desperately needs the immune system strong to combat the illness at hand. Chemo also weakens all of our biological systems. According to Cancer.net, many cancer treatments damage the heart, leading to Cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure. It’s not uncommon for a patient to suffer a major heart attack up to five years later from the very treatment that saved them from cancer.

Prevention by adding antioxidant plants to your diet to kill the bad cells, while strengthening the immune system, is key. Plants do this while addressing all of our biological systems through the endocannabinoid system (eCS), the system that accepts and directs plant compounds throughout our bodies.

Bottom line, we can readily search and see that there are many plants that have antioxidant properties, but without a controlled study with humans we can’t say plants will put cancer into remission. All we have in the cannabis and plant caregiving community are the successful, yet anecdotal stories of healing, passed down by word of mouth, practiced by those willing to try.

Chamomile Coconut Infusion

1 c. whole, dried chamomile flower

1 liter coconut oil (solid)

Add the whole flower to the rice cooker or crockpot, set to warm, and simmer for one to two hours.

The warm setting will be inconsistent and slightly warmer on the crockpot.

Stir often, checking to make sure the mixture isn’t too hot.

Burning the mixture will damage the fragile beneficial compounds.

Keep the lid open on the rice cooker. You are not using it as you would a pressure cooker, you are using it to simmer the formulation.

Strain and pour into suppository molds using pipettes.

Chill in the freezer until solid.

Keep in the refrigerator or freezer until ready to use. They will melt otherwise. If transporting, use a cooler and a freezer bag or ice.

Use a suppository manual applicator to insert into vagina (or anus, depending on protocol/ ailment. If using cannabis, there is no head high when delivering into anus.)

The Road Of Excess: A History of Writers on Drugs

When we think of books about taking drugs, for many people, the first one that usually comes to mind is Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas. However, before Thompson reached his high-water mark in Vegas, there has been a long history of writers that experimented with drugs, then shared their stories. Trying to explain, as best they could, the surreal, euphoric, and sometimes frightening experiences that occurred. These stories are told, some scientifically, some through first-person accounts, and others symbolic with metaphorical tales; all describing the sensations and effects of being intoxicated and under the influence.

In The Road Of Excess: A History of Writers on Drugs, Professor Marcus Boon covers not only those authors inspired by drugs or the negative effect that drugs had on their lives, but also those scientists who first discovered the active ingredient. As well as how the introduction of these drugs intertwined throughout the development of the society we live in today. Boon writes in his Prologue, “I was interested in seeing if literary accounts of drug use gave a consistent account of the effects of drugs like marijuana or opium over time — or if the meaning of a particular chemical substance was also ‘socially constructed’ and changed over time, with users experiences reflecting the historical situation in which these experiences occurred.”

Boon doesn’t celebrate or condemn the use of mind-altering substances, instead, he looks into how these substances came to be and how those writers experimented, documented, and used their experience in their writing.

Chapter 4: INDUCED LIFE

One of my favorite chapters is on a whole category of substances that ignited writers and changed the course of documentation forever. Stimulants have been a technological aid to writers for decades. From scholars to marketers, to programmers and poets; each group has used some form of stimulant to increase creativity, accelerate productivity, and maintain focus. The writer comes out of the individual with the help of stimulants. From the legend of Bodhidharma, the Indian monk who brought Buddhism to China, ripping off his eyelids so that he would not fall asleep while meditating, and from those eyelids, tea plants are said to have sprouted, to the history of coffee reaching Europe in the sixteenth century and influencing literature. As coffeehouses became the location for socialites to gather, replacing pubs and the consumption of beer and spirits, coffee stimulated those chatting over their newly discovered ritual, to write their new insightful ideas and share them with

their newly formed collective.

Chapter 2: THE VOICE OF THE BLOOD

Here is another exciting chapter, this one covers anesthetics, particularly, nitrous oxide. Chemist Humphry Davy, in 1799, started nitrous oxide therapy, which soon branched out into nitrous parties. As noted by Davy’s publisher, Joseph Cottle, “the laughable and diversified effects produced by this new gas on different individuals quite exercised philosophical gravity and converted the laboratory into the region of hilarity and relaxation.”

Writer, philosopher, and someone who practiced experimental mysticism with hashish and nitrous oxide, Peter Ouspensky, noted about his experience that “these new and unexpected experiences come upon me and flashed by so quickly that I could not find the words, could not find the forms of speech, could not find concepts, which would enable me to remember what has occurred even for myself, still less to convey it to anyone else.” He later determined that it was all a question of how one approaches infinity.

As Boon so eloquently puts it, “Literature and drugs are two dynamically developing domains of human activity that have coevolved alongside and interpenetrated with many other such domains, human or not.” Life as we know it has many roots grounded in mind-altering substances. History has been, and the future continues to be, designed by drugs.

“The histories of religion, literature and science all intersect in the production of the artifact known as the writer on drugs.” Boon.

The thing is, these are just a couple of my favorite topics in the book. With chapters on cannabis, anesthetics, stimulants, psychedelics, and the psychonauts that wrote about them, including a thorough bibliography and tons of notes, The Road Of Excess: A History of Writers on Drugs by Marcus Boon has the perfect dose of everything exhilarating and elevating that’s written while under the influence. An Interview with Lauren Miele CEO of KushKards and NaughtyKards

Lauren Miele is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of KushKards, the first cannabis greeting card where “one can strike a match and light what is attached.” A burgeoning fashion designer in 2013, Miele launched KushKards to fulfill a need to gift cannabis — at a time when there was no way to do it. Standard greeting cards lacked the form and function, so Miele created a niche market of innovative cannabis gifting for young professionals like herself looking for “the perfect gift with a lift.” Miele quickly grew KushKards into a national brand.

Her newest line, NaughtyKards, is all things fun with a touch of cannabis as she makes the bridge between being sexy and high at the same time. This collection has cards for birthdays, just because, pride, love, sex and more.

I checked in with Lauren to hear more about her various product lines and all of the cool products that have been added.

STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Tell me a little bit about you and how you came up with the idea of KushKards.

LAUREN MIELE: I graduated from the Institute of Fashion Technology in New York City. My degree was actually a Bachelors in Home Products Development which left me well versed in product creation from start to finish. After graduating, I worked with various companies designing products and displays. I assumed I would always be employed within companies and working up the corporate ladder. What I didn’t anticipate was becoming an entrepreneur. KushKards was the business that just happened. Just six months after graduating from college, I came up with the idea of KushKards. Sketching designs while riding the subway to work, I really wanted to create a cool way for people to gift cannabis to others.

SS: What a cool idea. Why greeting cards?

LM: I have always loved stationary. And, obviously, I love cannabis too. When I initially came up with the idea, I was dating someone whose name was essentially just initials. I thought it would be really cool to attach blunts to the front of a greeting card spelling out a letter. The idea then developed into what it is today which are cards that you can add a joint or one-hitter to. And, ten years later, I am living in Colorado and expanding my business worldwide.

SS: Wow! Congrats on your success. And now, you have the NaughtyKards line. Tell me about that.

LM: Yes, we now have candles, bags, tissue paper, stickers, wrapping paper, holiday stockings and the new NaughtyKards line. I started the NaughtyKards line in 2020 after seeing there was also a greeting card void within the adult industry. Currently, there are many adult stores that also have a smoke accessories section which gives me the ability to promote both lines within those stores. And, I also have smoke shops and dispensaries that carry both lines since their patrons are adults.

SS: What an amazing way to cross market. Are there any places here in Nevada, readers can pick up your products?

LM: KushKards are sold in over 4,000 retail locations including Spencer Gifts, Hustler Hollywood, Museum of Sex and Planet 13 in Las Vegas.

InfusedGarlic Butter Steak Bites

The biggest day for love is almost here. This month, I refocused from January’s Vegan recipe. This recipe caters to all you meat-lovers for a very special Valentine’s Day meal!

As inflation is rising it is becoming more common to do the “Home Date Night.” With this delicious recipe, you can be sure to hit those taste buds and elevate your evening. Also included is a recipe for weed butter that you can use to make lots of dishes and tasty edibles.

I believe that cannabis is grown with love so this is perfect for Valentines Day. Don’t forget how much I love Y’all too!

WEED BUTTER

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 to 1/2 ounce cannabis

1 cup butter

PREPARATION:

Decarboxylate your weed by spreading your cannabis evenly on an oven tray and coat with aluminum foil. Place in the oven on 240F for 25-45 minutes, and then let it cool. Grind your dry cannabis or chop it

till fine. Place the cannabis in a strong mason jar, add butter. Place your closed jar in cold water and let it come to a boil. Boil for 2 to 3 hours. Strain your butter through a cheesecloth. Cool down.

INFUSED GARLIC BUTTER

INGREDIENTS:

1/4 cup cannabis butter

1/2 cup regular butter

1/4 cup parsley

2 Tbsp shallot

2 Tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp garlic puree

1 tsp salt

PREPARATION:

Simply combine all the ingredients in a glass bowl, whisk it together and you're ready to serve.

GARLIC BUTTER STEAK BITES

INGREDIENTS:

Garlic

Weed butter (recipe above)

Steak – sirloin steak cut it into small pieces.

Olive oil – extra virgin

Salt & pepper – to season to your liking

Red pepper flakes for a little heat (optional)

Parsley to garnish , we eat with our eyes first!

PREPARATION:

Use a really hot skillet, you don't want to overcook the steak. If the skillet is hot enough you only need to cook for 4-5 minutes (don't stir the steak for at least 1-2 minutes.) Let the steak get a nice sear. Keep your Garlic Butter separate. Pour butter over your steak and enjoy the amazing taste and elevated feeling. .. Bon Appetit!

TIPS:

I suggest you match your steak bites with a nice veggie such as lemon pepper broccoli, asparagus, or if you want to use more of the “weed butter,” you can always make some traditional mashed potatoes using your “infused garlic butter.”

If you already have cannabis butter then you will shave a lot of time off this recipe, but the butter is fun to make and you can make as much as you want.

Careful how you dose your bites, you don’t want the night to end too soon!

Ice Cream Cake Infused Chocolate Covered Strawberries

What’s up all you Stoner’s and Stonette’s! This month I am making something for all you lovers out there. Some quick and easy chocolate covered strawberries, perfect for sharing with your love. I hope you all have a great Valentine’s Day!

Ingredients:

4oz Ice cream cake THC infused coconut oil

1 or 2 containers of fresh strawberries (washed)

1 container of fresh raspberries (washed)

24oz bag of milk chocolate wafers or bars (broken into pieces)

24oz bag of white chocolate wafers or bars (broken into pieces)

1 packet of gold sanding sugar

1 packet of silver sanding sugar

2 medium sized glass bowls

2 medium sized pots

Parchment paper

Piping bags

INSTRUCTIONS:

Start by placing both of your pots onto the stove at a medium heat filled halfway with water. Depending on your bowls, it might take less. You want the bowl to cover and not have the water touch its bottom. Start placing your chocolate wafers or broken down bars into the bowls. You can do one at a time if that makes you more comfortable. When the chocolate starts to melt, add in 2oz of the

infused coconut oil into each bowl. Now mix thoroughly with a spatula. You want to aim for a temperature of 90-92 degrees. Medium setting is usually fine though. You don’t want burnt chocolate!

Start dipping your strawberries into each bowl of chocolate. You might have to use the rolling method to coat your strawberries. Once fully coated, place onto an empty sheet pan lined with parchment paper.

You will probably choose to do one type of chocolate strawberry at a time, which is fine. Once the strawberries are coated, repeat this for each type of chocolate. Take a wet knife and cut into halves like I did or keep them whole.

Take some of your silver and gold sanding sugars and dip the tip of each strawberry after coating or wait to add a little sparkle towards the end. Fill a piping bag with each type of chocolate and snip a tiny piece off the end. Be careful this bag will be warm. Start drizzling your strawberries with the opposite flavors of each chocolate. You can do stripes, you can do dots, you can choose your own little design. Hearts? Remember to sprinkle your gold and silver along the way while the chocolate is cooling to ensure it sticks. Have fun with your designs. Have fun with your food.

Place into little cups like I did with some raspberries on the side or together on a plate. The choice is yours.
