Letter to Our Readers
The state of New Jersey is noted for its wondrous diversity in ethnicity and culture. Ever since the Dutch and English settled here in the 1600s, other populations have followed, bringing with them their foods, customs and holiday traditions. In this month’s issue, we take a look at some of these intriguing winter holiday traditions. Looking for something a bit different for next time you’re out to dine? How about a welcoming oasis to refresh and refuel? Go no further than Marlboro, where you’ll find Rosalita’s Roadside Cantina, an authentic Mexican restaurant that provides a cozy, warm atmosphere in which to indulge in hearty Mexican fare. Learn more about “Rosie’s” in this month’s Restaurant Profile. With a future career goal as a paralegal, this young woman and mother of four has put her aspirations on hold for now as she bartends at Quaker Steak & Lube in Brick. Read more about Chrissie Fattaruso, our Mixologist-of-the-Month. When you’re out visiting an entertainment venue and listening to a really great musician or band, do you ever wonder how and where they got their start? Well, we found out! Venues NJ’s music contributor visited a remarkable “music institution,” where many an artist or group gets their start -- Lakehouse Music Academy in Asbury Park. This combination school /studio / music shop is a one-stop for everything music. Take a moment to learn more in this month’s Music Profile or go visit Lakehouse. It will blow you away! With the holiday season approaching, our contributor, Steve O, set his “sites” on a remarkable institution that has had many names over the years: Brendan Byrne Arena, Continental Airlines Arena and now the Izod Center, located in East Rutherford. But, with these many name changes, most of us still refer to it as “the Meadowlands.” Enjoy Steve’s take on this famous venue in his Behind The Footlights article. As another year ends, I, and our entire staff at Venues NJ want to thank each and every one of our readers for your loyal support of not just our publication, but your support of the many dining & entertainment venues that we bring to you each month. On behalf of all of us, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a healthy, safe and most prosperous New Year.

T
he Lakehouse Music Academy, located on Lake Avenue in Asbury Park, opened this past spring. It brings a much needed central hub to an area already well known for its ties in the music community. Owned by Jon Leidersdorff and run by many industry-savvy teachers and guest instructors, Lakehouse creates an infrastructure to continue the growth of the music scene in Asbury Park and beyond, while bringing everything an aspiring musician needs under one roof. Among the many instructors at Lakehouse is Music Director Albie Monterrosa, founder of the Latin rock and soul group deSol. He has traveled the world to bring his creation to as many as possible, appearing in famous festivals such as Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, as well as performing for the troops in the Middle East and touring with bands such as R.E.M., The Wailers, Widespread Panic, Los Lobos and many more. Monterrosa has now come full circle and is back where he started his career to spread his love of music and inspire a new generation of artists. “I see that it’s a life building experience for them,” he said of his students who range in age from six months all the way to 70 years, proving it’s never too late to begin following a dream.“My job as music director is to welcome them and show them they can be all they want to be and push them to go even further than they think they can go.” At Lakehouse Music Academy, it’s more than just learning an instrument and taking basic lessons, it’s learning what it takes to succeed at everything else in life and how to work together and practice and prepare to make sure others succeed as well.“Music has the power to change the outcome in all things,” Monterrosa asserts. David Ades, marketing director for Lakehouse Music Academy, explains, “Music is a universal language; it’s the language of the soul. Music has the power to change people’s experience, to change their outlook on life, to change the direction of their life.” According to Monterrosa, the academy uses music as a tool to bring people of all different backgrounds together, to let them bond over the one thing everyone has in common. When they play, learn and grow as a group, it boosts the confidence and selfworth of everyone involved. He sees growth with all those in the program, his favorite part of bringing his craft to others. “I see these kids who struggle and we work together and their parents kept them in the program and now they’re playing chords. Now they’re writing a little bit, coming out of their shell and building confidence.”

akehouse Music Academy offers instruction for students of any age. It starts with the Cadet program, an interactive program for children from six months to six years old. Described as a parentand-me program, it exposes children to rhythm and melody and allows for them to use shakers and drums and bells with class sing-alongs that not only help them feel and understand music, but helps cognitive functions and learning abilities for later in life. From ages six to 10, the kids begin learning an instrument with private half-hour lessons every week. Kids and teens ages 10 to 18 are in the core program which continues with personal lessons and creates groups and bands so they can get a sense of what it takes to work for one another. The entire program culminates with The Big Gig, where participants put on a show at one of the many local venues. They have played at Asbury Lanes, The Wonder Bar and will appear at Stone Pony at the end of January. The Big Gig is what really makes the students want to learn and gives them all a goal to work towards as a group. They all have to work hard in order for the rest of the band sound harmonic and tight and that makes every member held accountable. “It’s an incredible experience to get kids between six and 10 years old on the stage of venues like The Stone Pony and do something they never thought they could do,” says Ades. “A student who is just learning and going to your neighborhood lesson center where all they do is learn an

instrument, there’s no attachment,” emphasizes Monterrosa. “When you’re a musician you know what a band is like. You’re a family, you do everything together, anything you can to make yourselves succeed.” Lakehouse Music Academy is a one-stop shop for everything music. The building encompasses three floors containing a café, music store, the academy, recording and rehearsal spaces and
there’s an AM/FM radio station coming soon. Chrissie Fattaruso BY CLARE MARIE CELANO
Bartender Chrissie Fattaruso has her sights set
on a paralegal career to provide a bit more stability for her family’s future but for right now, this mother of four is perfectly suited and situated to helping others relax and have fun in her role as popular bartender. Fattaruso works the day shift on weekdays at Quaker Steak and Lube in Brick, which she describes as “very cool,” with its classic and specialty car motif and “gas station” look. She’s been with Doherty Enterprises for seven years. The franchise company owns Quaker Steak and Lube, Applebee’s, and other chains. Fattaruso began her career in the restaurant industry as a server at Applebee’s in Newton, NJ where she worked for two years. During that time, she earned
to the new Applebee’s in Lacey, a location she helped open. “Newton was too rural up there for me,” she relates, “And, I really wanted to come back home.” During her time at Applebee’s, Fattaruso was
quickly promoted from server to “trainer” and then bartender. “Bartending allows me to spend time with customers and really get to know them,” she smiles. “When you are a server, you’re so busy getting orders out, you really don’t have much time to learn about the customers.” She adds, “I’m an outgoing ‘people person’ and I feel better when I can be more personable and relate to my customers.” She counts herself lucky to have made many friends and a host of regular customers at her job. “I know their stories and they know mine,” she admits, adding that she truly enjoys being able to relate to her customers in a personal way. Fattaruso will be signing up for the paralegal program at Ocean County College come spring, but says she is not likely to give up bartending. “I love bartending,” she emphasizes, “but I want to look for a more stable future for my family, one that includes benefits and a 401k plan. I will probably always do bartending because once you have the experience of being a bartender, you always have it.”

Christmastime
T
here really is no other state that can claim the wondrous diversity of cultures than New Jersey. Original residents were the Native Americans, and certainly each group had different beliefs and ways of living. In the 1600s, the Dutch and English settled in what was then the Forest State. Other ethnic populations followed, bringing with them their foods, libations, mores, customs and holiday traditions This month, Venues NJ celebrates the winter holidays in an inclusive manner, discussing the unique rites of our most abundant ethnic friends, neighbors and coworkers. The following is courtesy of the Museum of Science and Industry, headquartered in Chicago and santas.net. MEXICO: For Mexicans, the Christmas season starts on December 16th. Mexican households (in Mexico and here) are festooned with evergreens and flowers, as well as c o l o r e d p a p e r lanterns. The nativity s c e n e (Pesebre) is a very important element. In Mexico, during the season, folks form a procession each night that honors the journey of Mary and Joseph who sought for lodging for the night. In some villages, they carry candles, sing songs and knock on doors to seek housing, but are politely refused -- after the procession, the go back home and pray in front of the nativity scene. After this, they hold a fiesta, where the 18
children are gently blindfolded, spun around and given three chances to strike through a piñata, which is filled with fruits, nuts and candy. Feliz navidad indeed!
UKRAINE: In this Eastern European country, it is customary to greet another with the festive holiday saying, Veselykh Svyat! The Ukrainian culture is a mix of preChristian pagan religion so its Christmas customs sometimes blend both the old-agrarian and the Christian elements. The Christmas season starts with advent, four weeks of fasting. They also clean their homes fastidiously and immaculately inside and out. A ceremonial didush -- wheat sheaf -- is saved to represent the family (the living, dead and those unborn). The didukh is decorated with flowers, basil and ribbons prior to Christmas Eve, when it is placed under an icon in a corner. The big day for Ukrainians is not called Christmas, but is the Day of St. Nicholas (patron saint of children) and is, like in the US, the day to give and receive gifts. IRELAND: During Christmastime, exclaim Nodlaig Nait Cugat! St. Bridget’s cross, which proudly represents the female patron saint of Ireland, appears on top of Christmas trees. In Ireland, on Christmas Eve, windows shine with candles and the front door is unlocked to allow in those who seek shelter on the holy night. The candles are hopefully blown out by a woman named Mary. The traditional Irish also enjoy

an old custom, Feeding the Wren. On December 26 (St. Stephen’s Day; St. Stephen was the first Christian martyr who was betrayed by the singing of a wren), children seek a wren or a similar small bird such as a sparrow, which is placed in a cage and toted by the kids door-to-door to collect money for the less fortunate in their communities. Of course, the birds are released back into the wild.
GREECE: Say Kala Christouyenna! when extending a holiday greeting to Greek folks. Now we all know about their delicious food, and food is central here, too. But first, for Greeks, the Christmas season begins with 40 days of fasting. The week before Christmas, Greek families begin baking. One of the prominent baked delicacies is called Christ’s bread, large loaves of sweet bread configured in various shapes. An ornament representing the families’ profession is baked into the crust. It is served with honey, dried fruits and nuts. On New Year’s Day (St. Basil’s Day for Greeks), a sponge cake is baked with a coin inside, then it’s broken into smaller pieces, the first being offered to St. Basil, the second for Jesus Christ, and the remaining pieces for family members to be blessed physically and spiritually for the new year. The family member who finds the coin in his or her slice of bread will enjoy good luck and prosperity for the coming year. ITALY: Christmas, in Italy, like that in the Ukraine, has both Christian and preChristian elements, including the winter solstice celebration, Saturnalia. St. Francis of Assisi introduced the nativity or crèche in 1223 -- crèche displays can include just a few figures or can be quite

Traditions elaborate and they are enjoyed on Christmas Eve. The holiday greeting here is Buon Natale! Another blended tradition that holds fast is the burning of the Yule log, which must remain lit until New Year’s Day; the pagans believed the log purified and revitalized for the new year, while the Christian belief is that the Virgin Mary warmed her newborn by the blazing log in the hearths of homes where dwellers were away at midnight mass. In Italy, gifts are given and opened on the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6; the night before, children set out their shoes to be filled by La Befana, a crone who travels throughout Italy on a broom leaving gifts for good children -- and coal for bad ones.
GERMANY: We have the Germans to thank for the tradition of the Christmas tree. In the Middle Ages, miracle plays were performed to teach the peasants Bible stories, and the plays featured a decorated evergreen tree representing the tree of life. Lore has it that when St. Boniface was preaching to the Germanic tribes, he cut down an oak tree that the Germans held sacred. The fallen oak crushed all the other trees around it except a fir, which was promptly declared by St. Boniface to be the Tree of Christ. Martin Luther was credited for adding “bling” to the tree by tying candles on it to mimic the twinkling starlights he saw through a copse of evergreens on a clear night. In some parts of Germany, a glass pickle is the last ornament affixed to the Christmas tree, but is hidden. The first child who finds it in the morning receives an extra present. The traditional Christmas greeting in German is Froehiliche Weihnachten! CHINA: China is not a Christian nation, but there are quite a few Chinese Christians who have developed many festive traditions of their own. The Christmas season here is known as Sheng Dan Jien, and features a visit from Dun Che Lao Ren, known in English as “Old Man Christmas,” and like Santa, he delivers gifts to the children. Homes and Trees of Light are festooned with colored lanterns provide the festive environment for relatives and friends to exchange gifts and flowers. Christmas in China coincides with the Spring Festival December 2013
that honors family ancestors. Meals, firecrackers and presents are all significant during this holiday.
INDIA -- DIWALI: The big celebration is Diwali -- known as the Festival of Lights -- celebrated on the last day of the last month of the lunar calendar, in late autumn typically coinciding around our Halloween. For Indians, Diwali celebrates the renewal of life; they believe that the souls of the ancestors come to visit their homes on Diwali and new lamps will help the souls find their way to heaven. So, it’s out with the old (lamps) and in with the new! Diwali is known for its colorful beauty in display, in traditional dance, and in food presentation. Prior to the holiday, the living room floors and front entrances of homes are decorated with traditional good luck signs; the typical decor are carpets made from rice powder that is sifted through fingers to create images of birds, insects, flowers and intricate patterns. Celebrants put on new apparel and jewelry and participate in the various Diwali activities including lightings, firecrackers, cleanliness, colorful rangoli making, and social gatherings where greetings and sweets are shared with loved ones. Diwali is also festival filled with spiritualism and religious activities, such as worship of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, Maa Kali, Lord Chitragupta, and Govardhan Parvat. AFRICAN-AMERICAN -- KWANZAA: The newest holiday, it was created in 1966 to celebrate the deeply rooted ancient customs of Africa and its traditional first harvest customs, as well as to honor the love, respect and tolerance between and among all peoples. Dr. Maulana Korenga created Kwanzaa as a celebration that would reaffirm African heritage and culture, introduce and reinforce seven guiding principles (Nguzo Sara), and serve as an act of cultural self-determination as an African people. The holiday commences December 26 and lasts through January 1. Each day of Kwanzaa celebrates one of the seven principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujumaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith). Serial killers may be all the rage on bookshelves and television screens, but they are comparatively rare in musical theater. Now, after a long dry spell, Broadway has a deadly sociopath to call its own. Please give a hearty welcome to Monty Navarro, the conniving killer who helps turn murder most foul into entertainment most merry in the new musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.” Despite the high body count, this delightful show will lift the hearts of all those who’ve been pining for what sometimes seems a lost art form: musicals that match streams of memorable melody with fizzily witty turns of phrase. Bloodlust hasn’t sung so sweetly, or provided so much theatrical fun, since Sweeney Todd. The seriously squeamish needn’t fear entering the Walter Kerr Theater, where this frolicsome operetta opened just this past November 17th. Although our anti-hero, played with brash innocence lightly sprinkled with arsenic by Bryce Pinkham, eventually piles up a stack of corpses to rival that of dear old Mr. Todd, he’s a much cuddlier fellow. A gentleman indeed, whose only wish is to secure his fortune by bumping off a few inconvenient relatives in Edwardian England. Since these spoiled sprigs on the family tree are mostly stuffed shirts or stuffed skirts — and are all played by the dazzling Jefferson Mays — you’ll be laughing too hard to shed a tear for any of them.
A Review
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder
Mr. Mays won a Tony Award for playing multiple roles in the Pulitzer Prize-winning solo show “I Am My Own Wife,” but the chameleonic performance he gives here makes even that feat seem simple. In a true tour de force that is hardly likely to be bettered on Broadway this season, Mr. Mays sings, dances, ice-skates, bicycles and generally romps through some eight roles — flipping among personas male, female and somewhere in between — at a pace that sets your head spinning. The penniless Monty little knows of his relationship to the clan when we find him, in the opening scene, mourning his newly deceased mother. A visit from an old friend of hers, the nosy Miss Shingle brings startling news: The mother he knew only as a Dickensian sufferer — scrubbing floors to feed her beloved only son — was in fact a highborn D’Ysquith, banished forever when she ran off with a Castilian, defying her family’s wishes. “And by my estimation,” Miss Shingle casually adds, “only eight other relations stand between you and the current Earl of Highhurst, Lord Adalbert D’Ysquith himself.” This tempting tidbit lodges in Monty’s fertile mind and begins forthwith to sow dark intentions. Monty is on the verge of losing his love, the socially ambitious Sibella Hallward, to a more well-heeled man. Might she not reconsider if Monty were to establish himself as a bona fide D’Ysquith, or better yet, to hack his way through all that
underbrush on the family tree and arrive at the tippy top, becoming the ninth earl of Highhurst? Fortune favors the brave, and soon Monty — through happenstance and the occasional bit of malicious handiwork — is rocketing up the social scale, as his relatives fall victim to unhappy, ahem, accidents. Under the nicely pitched direction of Darko Tresnjak — a Shakespeare specialist here making his own impressive Broadway debut — Monty’s journey unfolds as a series of brisk comic vignettes, set to songs that honorably re-create the boisterous heyday of the English music hall and the prime of 19thcentury operetta. Mr. Mays is not a musical theater specialist, to be sure, which makes his accomplishment here all the more impressive. Most of his songs don’t make any great demands on the tonsils, but he manages to sing in a variety of voices, distinguishing each character with a distinctive sound. As each precise caricature of British snootiness or silliness comes bounding onto the stage, Mr. Mays seems to be challenging himself to elicit bigger laughs, and he almost always succeeds. All but one of his characters ends up six feet under by the time this daffy, inspired musical concludes, but his brilliant performance deserves to be immortalized in Broadway lore for some time to come.

Behind the Footlights Izod Center, East Rutherford, NJ by Steve Ortlieb
With this, our last issue before we usher in 2014, we’ve chosen to set our “sites” on a local arena that will be producing a number of winter and Christmas/Holiday shows. And to that end I’m happy to present-- the Brendan Byrne Arena! Remember that original moniker after the New Jersey governor? So, we present ... the Continental Airlines Arena! Oops, wrong again. In fact, that airline doesn’t even exist anymore. Welcome to this month’s story on the Izod Center. Yes, that Izod, the one with the alligator icon on the golf and tennis shirts. But also the most recently named sponsor of our iconic arena in The Meadowlands. The Izod Center, the erstwhile home of The New Jersey Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets) and the New Jersey Devils (who now play in The Prudential Center in Newark). As you can begin to see, the Izod Center has survived numerous incarnations and weathered many changes. Today it is mainly a fixture for entertainers. Since it was built, it hosted such luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Michael Jackson, and numerous other musical and comedy icons all here at “The Meadowlands”, as we locals still call it, regardless of the actual name. And that’s a unique Jersey thing: we all just say that we’re going to “The Meadowlands.” This may take a minute, but here’s a truncated list of what you can expect to see at the Izod Center this upcoming year. Disney on Ice, Monster Jam, the Harlem Globetrotters, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and in concert, Demi Lovato, Cher, Miley Cyrus, and for the more mature among us, Richard Nader’s 25th Anniversary All Star Doo Wop Concert. While no sports events are currently scheduled it wouldn’t be a stretch to expect some college or professional events to spring up.
December 2013
The origins of the arena begin in 1977, about a year after the football stadium opened. Construction took four years and was opened on July 2, 1981 with, who else, Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. Over the next 30-some years nearly every indoor sporting event and performer has appeared here. From NCAA basketball tournaments to the Rolling Stones, the Izod has seen it all. And it’s a good thing too, because its time may have come and passed. With the recent opening of the Prudential Center in nearby Newark, it is now considered by many to have outlived its usefulness. As United States Senator-elect Corey Booker said recently, “It was a competing venue to the Prudential Center for events, and a drain on taxpayers.”
expected completion of the multiuse Xanadu “American Dream Meadowlands,” the Izod Center may fall victim to old age and/ or obsolescence. As it was never a favored venue anyway, no one much seems to care about its impending demise, least of all New Jersey’s politicians. A recent search on Wikipedia related to the new supermall project reveals it to be, if it is ever finished, a fullfledged wonderland. From an indoor ice rink, snow park and amusement park to a full concert hall, there will almost certainly be no need for the Izod Center to continue operating. Time will tell, however. In the meanwhile, it is making valiant attempts to host entertainers of interest, so enjoy it while you can. For additional information on a schedule of events, visit www.izodcenter.com.
Jerry Zaro, economic czar to former New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, commented, “You can’t have two venues that close together fighting each other and have that be productive for the state.” In public opinion polls it frequently ranks near or at the bottom of most arena polls. It seems that with the advent of the

RESPONSIBILITY
Moral, legal or mental accountability; reliable, trustworthy; able to answer for ones conduct or obligations.
In today’s society, there is a tendency to “pass the buck” when it comes to owning up to actions we take or inaction on our part. Our legalistic society, our government and many of our institutions have instilled in us a belief that we are not responsible for our actions. “It’s somebody else’s fault”.

RESTORE… HELP WA If we don’t get that promotion on the job, it’s discrimination on the part of the boss or HR Dept.; if we don’t achieve our goals, it’s the economy’s fault, or if our kids are not doing well in school, it’s the teacher’s fault. Going a step further, this tendency has been reinforced by a government that encourages inaction on our part by telling us that they will take responsibility and take care of us. Why look for a job when you can “live off the dole”? Personal responsibility is what built this country. It’s what made this country great. Our grandparents and great-grandparents didn’t sit back and wait for others to take care of them. They rolled up their sleeves and went to work to build a better life for themselves and their families. If we want this country and our society to remain great, we’d better not forgo our personal responsibilities and be accountable for our actions.

Most individu In line with this thinking, as we enter the year- end holiday season, we all need to take responsibility for our actions.
