Letter to Our Readers
It’s our time to boast! Yes, this February 2, billions of people from around the globe will watch and experience the first-ever “New Jersey Super Bowl.” While most media outlets have been referring to this cold-weather stadium event as a New York attraction, it’s really our time to shine. In this issue’s main editorial, read about all the planning and organizational activities in our state that have been going on leading up to Super Bowl Sunday. There are few things that can relax the mind and renew the spirit as a great dinner in a cozy and friendly atmosphere with good food and delicious drinks. The Cabin Restaurant in Freehold offers such an experience. After 30 years, patrons keep visiting and revisiting this iconic venue. Read more about it in this month’s Restaurant Profile, then give it a try. Looking for a terrific local band to go out and listen to? Find out where Matt O’Ree and his band are performing and go listen to them. Matt has been entertaining audiences locally (and worldwide) for years. His music, albums and awards are all a tribute to his talent and that of his mates. Brought up on the music of the likes of B.B. King, Jimmy Hendrix, Chuck Berry and ZZ Top, the band’s music is varied, upbeat and totally enjoyable. Take a moment and review this issue’s Band Profile Over the past year, our regular contributor Steve O has interviewed standup comics with varied background ranging from a neurosurgeon, to a lawyer and a deli owner. This month, a banker turned standup comic. Read about Geno Bisconte, a stand-up comic, writer, video blogger and low-budget movie actor. As we begin the New Year, it is our hope that you will continue to look forward to and enjoy the editorial features and the dining and entertainment information provided by Venues NJ. It is our mission to provide timely features and listings to help you in your desires to get out and enjoy life. And thank you for your kind words and support.

here are few things in life that can relax the mind and renew the spirit as a great dinner in a cozy warm atmosphere with wholesome food and wonderful spirits can, especially when it is all offered wrapped in the warmth of a log cabin setting. Visit The Cabin Restaurant on Route 33 East and find out why patrons have continued to return over and over again since it was built in 1983. The eatery was built by owners (and brothers) Rod and Tom Cunliffe as a sports bar. In 2000, The Cabin suffered a large fire that damaged its interior. The Cunliffes had sold the restaurant in 1990 but took it over again
something for everyone’s palate. Enjoy appetizers such as Stuffed Portabello Mushroom, a portabello mushroom stuffed with spinach and mozzarella, served with a roasted garlic cream sauce; or Boneless Wings with Buffalo or BBQ sauces served up with bleu cheese and celery; or Corned Beef Reuben Fritters, diced fresh tender corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing breaded with panko bread and cracker meal and served with honey dijon dressing. Shrimp Dumplings, Clams Casino, Baked Mac and Cheese, Clams on the Half Shell, Cabin Nachos and Beer Battered Onion Rings are among the other numerous appetizers. Soups and sandwiches are also plentiful at The Cabin. Enjoy a hearty French Onion Soup or Homemade Chili, along with a delicious Fresh Mozzarella Sandwich with sundried tomatoes, roasted red peppers and red onions served on French bread drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette Or, try the delicious Black Russian Sandwich which offers lean, tender pastrami on hearty pumpernickel bread topped with cole slaw, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese, baked and served open face. Beef lovers can sink their teeth into the Philly Style Cheese Steak Sandwich, smothered in mushrooms and melted American cheese. Bring the family to enjoy a freshly made pizza
And when it comes to entrees -- bring your hunger because you are going to be more than satisfied! Try the Chicken, Veal, Eggplant or Shrimp Parmigiana or Chicken or Veal Saltimbocca or Chicken or Veal Marsala, Deep Fried Shrimp, and Fajitas. A large selection of pastas, including Alfredo, Penne Vodka and Linguine with Clam Sauce are also among the choices. And there is so much more. The Cabin’s extensive menu is a key attraction for regular visits. The popular eatery also offers a special children’s menu that includes Linguine or Angel Hair Pasta, Cheeseburger, Chicken Fingers, and Grilled Cheese. Happy Hour is on tap Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. From fancy Martinis to yummy Irish coffees, to Hot Rum Chatas and The Cabin’s own creative concoctions, there is something for everyone. The Cunliffes didn’t just create a restaurant -they created a sports bar destination. att O’Ree became captivated by the guitar when his older siblings came home with all kinds of records and he turned his instant love of blues music into a career that has led to multiple awards and trips around the world. His father also played the guitar, but he says it’s Jimi Hendrix, most notably the album “Are You Experienced” that really got him hooked. Other big influences growing up were B.B. King, Chuck Berry and ZZ Top.
O’Ree currently has three albums available for purchase. His debut album, 88 Miles, was released in 1998 and was followed by Chalk It Up in 2001. His latest is 2005’s Shelf Life, which, along with 88 Miles, is available for purchase on iTunes. Shelf Life received a host of attention and won numerous awards at the Asbury Park Music Awards including Best Blues Band, Best Guitarist, Best Local Release and Song of the Year for their track “Saints & Sinners.” The album was even featured in an issue of Guitar World Magazine who called him “2006’s new guitar hero.”

time and they always discussed playing together and they finally joined forces after he left the band Days Awake. Bennert got his start when he was 23 by filling in with O’Ree so they too have known each other for quite some time. He was a full-time member of R&B band Big Baby Ernie for 12 years before deciding to join O’Ree after seeing one of his shows soon after winning Guitarmageddon. Hummel has been playing drums since he was 10 and has worked with Lady Gaga, Anthony Krizan of The Spin Doctors and John Ginty of Citizen Cope, among many others. “I definitely feel like the best success I’ve had is the past five years because I finally have the right people,” he says. “It’s like colliding planets they finally lined up and I’m fortunate enough to have all those guys.” ’Ree, who also works as a private guitar instructor, has played across the United States and overseas, including going to Italy and Greece to play with The Blues Brothers. He has opened for bands like Foreigner, Kansas, Blue Oyster Cult and Styx But despite all his travels and experiences, he continues to play a lot around New Jersey. Three of his favorite venues are Sayreville’s
O
Starland Ballroom and Asbury Park’s Stone Pony and The Saint. There is more to come from Matt O’Ree as he recorded a DVD while performing at The Saint in Asbury Park this past summer. It’s scheduled to be released this Spring along with his fourth studio album. The DVD is currently in post production and he is waiting on a number of guest musicians to finish up their performances for the album. O’Ree will be out in Anaheim at the end of January playing at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Convention. The annual convention, allowing dealers, distributors and musicians to buy and sell instruments and products is one of the two largest music product trade shows in the world. He currently has 12 local shows scheduled for February including an acoustic performance at Woody’s Tavern in Farmingdale on Valentine’s Day, three shows at the Colts Neck Inn and two at MJ’s in Matawan. For more information on the band, tour dates, album sales and much more, be sure to visit mattoree.com.
Aside from those honors, he also won Guitarmageddon in 2006, a contest hosted by B.B. King and John Mayer and run by Guitar Center and Guitar World Magazine. He beat out over 4,000 other musicians for the title of King of Blues in addition to an endorsement from Gibson Guitars, a shopping spree at Guitar Center and a car from Scion. “Of course it was such a great honor just to be a part of the contest let alone be fortunate enough to be able to win the whole thing.” O’Ree said. “What that help was even just as simple as iTunes downloads and getting other people around the world to notice.” The current lineup for the band includes Eric Safka on keyboard, Scott Bennert on bass and John Hummel on drums. Aside from winning Guitarmageddon, O’Ree considers assembling his current lineup to be the biggest reason for his success. “I still feel that’s the longest struggle for any musician to try to find the right people to play with that are on your team.” O’Ree has known Safka for a long 12

SUPER BO
n February 2, our oft-maligned great state will redeem itself from the tarnished reputation brought about by narcissistic and felonious “housewives,” and drunken “Jersey Shore” wastrels, both of which painted ugly and untrue pictures of who we really are. During the two weeks leading up to February 2 -- New Jersey turns into The Super Bowl State. For the first time in many years, this epic gridiron event will take place in a cold-weather stadium, as MetLife has gotten the official nod to be host stadium for this most watched NFL Championship. It will be the first time the Super Bowl is hosted in an open-air stadium in a winter location: in 1982. It was held at the Pontiac Silverdome (Michigan, home of the NFC Detroit Lions) and in 1992 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (Minnesota, home of the NFC Minnesota Vikings) -- both toasty warm inside. Sadly, the legion of fans of our local teams -- dreaming about an NFL “subway matchup” -- were heartily disappointed as both the New York Jets (AFC) and the New York Giants (NFC) failed to even enter the playoffs, as both could only muster up mediocre season records. At the time of this writing, our other “local” team, the Philadelphia Eagles, had their wings clipped and will be at home watching the game like all of us. When it was announced several years ago that our great state would be the focal point for this world event, our savvy tourism marketers sprang into action to capture visitors who would alight here from all over the nation and the globe. Somerset County is one keen example. It created a website “thebiggamenj.com” to promote itself. Its homepage asserts: “Welcome to TheBigGameNJ.com, your Big Game information destination! ... Breathtaking scenery at every turn combined with convenient public transit options and easy access to MetLife Stadium, Somerset County, NJ is the perfect home
away from home for avid football fans.” Why is this site such a savvy move considering that any time of year, New Jersey is a magnificent, fun-filled destination? Because, according to Meadowlands Liberty region officials, Super Bowl XLVIII will attract numbers of people far in excess of the 82,500-plus ticket holders. “For two weeks, athletes and their families, coaches and staff, event management teams, sports professionals and enthusiasts, vendors, media crews, politicians, actors, actresses and thousands of regular Joe’s who simply want to enjoy the Super Bowl atmosphere will be in town celebrating the tradition of America’s greatest game.” NJ 101.5 personality Steve Trevelise, reported on the radio’s website (nj1015.com, Sep. 17, 2013) that the premium seats cost $2,600 each; this is about double the price from last year’s event at New Orleans’ Mercedes Benz Superdome, priced at $1,250 for similar seats. Second-tier tickets at MetLife are $1,500 ($950 in New Orleans), but the cheapest tickets are about $100 less -- costing fans $500 per. Oh, and those suites? More than any other Super Bowl, they’re hot commodities in what would likely be frigid weather. Our esteemed gridiron venue has 220 suites, each comfortably accommodating 12 to 30 people. In fact, this year’s starting price is $400,000, according to Jayne McManus, reporter for ESPNNewYork. com (January 3, 2014), who retrieved that figure from Robert Tuchman, president of Goviva, which arranges corporate travel packages for the big game. Tuchman stated that he anticipated that some suites may sell as high as three quarters of a million bucks, and explains to her: “It’s not so much about premium luxury like it’s been in the past. What people are playing for is warmth -- that’s why you have a value of 100 percent over what you might see in other years.” To put it into non-Super Bowl perspective, McManus, in her column, quips, “That warm suite will simply cost you the
median price of a modest house in the New York City suburbs. And rather than being the investment of a lifetime, it’s an investment of roughly six hours. “ The high number of luxury suites was an attraction for the league to place its biggest game here in our laps. The threeyear-old, $1.6-billion stadium was conceived and built from partial motivation to host a future Super Bowl, according to New York Times reporter Charles V. Bagli, (November 28, 2013). In contrast, the former Giants Stadium was erected at a paltry cost of only $75 million in 1976. Bagli adds that many hotels are taking full advantage by doubling their rates. The other big allure of the big game, TV advertising, will be making us laugh, making us sick, making us want to defenestrate our TVs, or making us roll our eyes, at record epic costs -- because at this point, approximately one-sixth of the earth’s population (about one billion people) will be tuning in. The very fact that this will be the first-ever outdoor Super Bowl in winter, with the real possibility of deep-freeze that may be accompanied by sleet, ice or snow -- or heaven forefend the occasional blizzard -- the National Football League has sprung for what it calls Warm Welcome giveaways -- 80,000 commemorative seat cushions (but without built-in butt warmers), hand warmers, ear muffs, lip balm, tissues and NFL quarterbackstyled mufflers. If any locals have been lucky enough to snag a ticket, those will e-Bay quite nicely. And there’s a huge pie to be split -- according to Bagli, the 2014 Super Bowl Host Committee estimates that between New York and New Jersey, the event and related activities should bring in about $550 million. Jersey-side attractions close to MetLife that are likely to benefit from swells in attendance include Medieval Times, The Aviation Hall of Fame, New Jersey Naval Museum - USS Ling, Meadowlands Racetrack, Liberty
Science Center, Meadowlands Environmental Center, Yogi Berra Museum, the IZOD Center and various movie theaters, according to insidethehuddle.nynj.com (notice which state initials are listed first). That host committee itself is an example of what makes our state great -- the friendly synergy between the Jets and Giants; it is co-chaired by owners of both teams and has served as the “go to” planning organization for everything “Super Bowl” including coordinating and hosting the all-important Media Day in Newark’s Prudential Center. The spending on the committee’s entire activities is approximately $70 million, according to spokesperson Alice McGillion, as told to reporter Ted Sherman of the Star-Ledger (NJ.com, December 2, 2013). New Jersey cities and communities nearby the stadium complex have been getting quite creative in providing celebratory activities. A challenge from the start, however, has been the focus on nearby Manhattan, ostensibly because it is the most famous city in the world -10 blocks of its famed Broadway will be morphed into “Super Bowl Boulevard.” No matter any herculean effort, we’re still the appendage -- the big stem of the big apple. But we will certainly be holding our own and likely exceed expectations, because that’s what we Jersey people do. Jersey City’s new mayor, Steven Fulop, told Hudson Reporter staff writer E. Assata Wright that his municipality is teaming up with Hudson Coun-
ty Chamber of Commerce to heavily promote its hospitality businesses, and the

The Newark Museum will be hosting the “Largest Indoor Tailgate Party” on January 28, from 1:00 to 8:00 pm; this event will feature favorite tailgate foods, football legends and a battle of the beers. For more info, visit nynjsuperbowl.com. If you possess an NJ Transit pass (monthly, weekly, SuperPass or other), that will entitle you to discounts at participating restaurants, hotels and other food establishments as part of NJ Transit’s “Championship Dining Program.” No matter where you watch Super Bowl XLVIII, we in New Jersey can take unabashed pride that our state will be in the spotlight as the real “winners” hosting this legendary ultimate football combat. And unlike NYC, Super Bowl XLVIII is our “empire,” if only for two weeks.

A Review
Aisle
B R O A D W A Y
My, how they do go on, these two. In the absurdly enjoyable revivals of Harold Pinter’s “No Man’s Land” and Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot,” which opened in repertory on November 24th at the Cort Theater, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart make a most persuasive case for conversation as both the liveliest and loneliest of arts. Hearing two such lions of the British stage (who also happen to be knights of the realm) swapping dialogue so dexterously, you may find yourself wishing that you could sound just like them. Granted, we average citizens of this planet are seldom if ever as epigrammatic as the blokes portrayed by Mr. McKellen and Mr. Stewart — a couple of swells, on the one hand, and a couple of bums, on the other. But listen closely and you’ll become aware of the blaring S.O.S. that weaves its way through everything they say. They are speaking, like you and me, to fill a void, to pass the hours, to assert their identities, to pretend that they’re truly connected to someone, anyone else. Making noise is what they do to keep out the silence that’s waiting to step in and devour them. Of course, they like to hear themselves talk. It’s how they make sure they’re alive.
Directed by Sean Mathias, with sturdy supporting performances by Billy Crudup and Shuler Hensley, these productions find the pure entertainment value in existential emptiness. I have never before heard American audiences respond to any production of Pinter or Beckett with such warm and embracing laughter. Watching these tales of aging British poets and woeful French vagabonds, the audience is truly in on the joke of how hollow even our most elaborate conversational rituals are. This is largely thanks to two stately showboats who know how to spin arcane philosophical head scratching into remarkably accessible high comedy. Only the sourest theatergoers will begrudge themselves the joy that Mr. McKellen and Mr. Stewart derive and impart from embodying this contradiction. These shows are an irresistible celebration of two actors’ love affairs with their scripts. Not that the physical side of things has been neglected. Mr. McKellen, in particular, not only talks the talk but also walks the walk in both shows, with a beautifully pained limp for “Godot,” and for “Land,” a sprightly heel-to-toe gait that gives
new life to the notion of pussyfooting. He and Mr. Stewart prove equally adroit in executing what might be called tragic pratfalls. Mr. McKellen plays Spooner, a shabby, selfstyled artiste who finds himself in the baronial digs of Hirst (Mr. Stewart), an eminent man of letters. If the play has a narrative arc, it would be that of Spooner’s trying to ingratiate himself into the employment of his newfound, wealthy friend. The tension rises when Hirst’s thuggish and possessive manservants, Foster and Briggs, show up and point out the intruder in their midst. But “Land” is basically a couple of white guys (and very British guys, that’s important) sitting around talking. And drinking — a lot. And swapping memories that may or may not be accurate, and that they may or may not have in common. This staging makes the clearest case I know for “Land” as Pinter’s appropriation and devastation of the classic drawing-room comedy. And I will forever cherish the memory of Mr. McKellen’s nimble Spooner and Mr. Stewart’s increasingly paralytic Hirst doing their best to one-up each other, in authoritatively delivered nonsense.
In this rendering, “Godot” comes across as a strikingly sentimental work, with Mr. McKellen and Mr. Stewart shifting from the barbed thrustand-parry of Pinter’s ambiguous adversaries to a tone of cozier interdependence. As the haplessly cerebral Vladimir (Mr. Stewart) and the more instinctual Estragon (Mr. McKellen), two tramps in a wasteland of eternal sameness, they are perhaps on occasion a little too adorable in their cycle of squabbles and reconciliations. Mind you, it could be argued that everything that is said and done in both “Land” and “Godot” is only diversionary, a way of both marking time and ignoring its inevitable toll. “That wasn’t such a bad little canter,” Estragon says to Vladimir, after they have engaged in several styles of conversation and confrontation, all done with vaudevillian panache. “Yes,” answers Vladimir, “but now we’ll have to find something else.” Of course, they do just that. What choice do they have, any more than we do? Fortunately, when the interpreters are Mr. McKellen and Mr. Stewart, that something else is something else again.

The act of determining; firmness of resolve; a formal expression of opinion, will or intent.
It’s that time of year again. At the beginning of each New Year, many of us reflect back on the past 12 months, review our “assets” and our “liabilities,” and determine to do better in the year to come. Some resolve to be more charitable, some determine to shed those extra pounds gained over the holidays, some intend to be kinder to others. Alas, after a few months -- or weeks -- or days, these well-intentioned resolutions dissolve.
ESTORE… HELP WA A more realistic way to approach the New Year might be to simply set reasonable goals and work toward them each and every day. More charitable? Give a little more than you want to. Shed pounds? Push that dessert tray away and substitute healthy foods for junk foods. Show more kindness? Express gratitude on a daily basis, or simply hold doors open for folks. If your goal (resolution) is reasonable, it is achievable.

cane Sandy Notificat It doesn’t take herculean efforts to achieve most things we wish to accomplish. Don’t set out to be an over-achiever. Consistent determination and steady progress on a regular basis will usually help us reach our reasonable goals.
As we all look ahead toward 2014, keep in mind “if it can be conceived, it can be achieved.” How about a combination of resolves? Enter the New Year with a goal of living life to the fullest, while promising to do unto others as we would want them to do unto us.
Proceeds from this annual gala event will support Prevention First programs including its after school program that provides a safe haven for local children and teens. Its mission is to help • prevent PT gang / FTviolence • surrounding Account Executive / and compassionate by youth with supportive adults who will mentor and help them learn to make decisions, respect themselves Ad Sales and understand the law. • Commission
