Letter to Our Readers
Valentine’s Day, here today … gone tomorrow. Flowers wilt, chocolates are eaten. They’re gone and quickly forgotten. Make this Valentine’s Day truly memorable … for both of you. In this timely issue, our editor has come up with a variety of distinctive experiences to celebrate this “love holiday.” Take time to read, review and select the experience that might be right for you. Or just be inspired by the idea and innovate your own adventure. Where can you find a good Sports Bar combined with a comfortable restaurant offering delicious food, tasty libations and a warm, friendly atmosphere? Try the Chapter House in Howell. Since the Jaspan family took over this venue three years ago, they have not changed any of those noted qualities. They have, however, gutted the entire bar area and totally improved the Sports Bar. Read this issue’s Restaurant Profile to find out exactly what this venue has to offer. Every band strives to be the best around, but only a few get to claim this distinction. The Bob DelRosso Band proved its mettle as the best blues band and will represent NJ at the International Blues Challenge to be held in Memphis, TN. Take a few moments to learn more about this group in this month’s Band Profile. Now, meet a young woman with many talents. She’s a mother, a bartender, a retail salesperson, a cook and a skilled snowboarder. Patrycja Worniecka works at the Blue Moon in South Amboy greeting her customers with her sunny smile and serving drinks. But when Patrycja is not working, she’s indulging in her “passion” …. snowboarding. Turn to our Mixologist-of-the-Month feature and find out more. On the light side, let our contributing writer Steve O introduce you to Rachael Feinstein, a stand-up comic, actress and film star who is currently working on her own pilot for Comedy Central. Read Steve’s interview in our Comic Relief feature and learn more about this energetic and very funny personality. Hopefully, this information-packed issue of Venues NJ will provide you with enough ideas and suggestions to help get you through these winter months. So, don’t go into hibernation. Get out and enjoy the season.

Guitarist DelRosso, bassist Alan Leston, keyboardist Kendal Scott and drummer Glenn Johnson will now go up against 200 blues bands from across the world to see who truly is the best. DelRosso began playing guitar at age eight and as a teenager looked up to rock guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower and Ritchie Blackmore before turning his attention towards the blues. Spending all that time with a guitar in hand certainly paid off; not only will DelRosso be playing in the IBC this year, a goal he has been working towards for a while, he and Johnson were inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame this past summer under the category of Great Blues Artists. DelRosso, Leston and Johnson have been playing together for three years while Scott is a recent addition. The band plays several times a month and can typically be found at Robin’s Nest Rhythm & Blues nightclub in Linden, R&Bz in Bayonne, 709 Point Beach Restaurant in Point Pleasant, and Blue Moon in South Amboy, which is their home base
with DelRosso performing there for over nine years. It’s also where they had their Get Outta Town Party on January 10 when they were joined by other great blues bands for a grand send off before making their way to Memphis. The show also served as a fundraiser to help the band pay for the travel and hotel expenses. The Bob DelRosso Band does perform some original music, but mostly t h e guys enjoy
putting their own twist on classic covers. The blues has been covered by so many for so long, DelRosso says, it’s important to keep it fresh and make even the old songs feel like new. Enhancing this ability is the fact that all four members come from all different backgrounds including rock and jazz, which brings everything together in a unique way, modernizing and progressing their versions of
songs over time. The IBC event is a tremendous occasion for the band. “We are honored to represent New Jersey at the IBC this year. With so many great blues bands in our region, they picked us to represent. That means the most to me and my bandmates,” DelRosso relates. “We are going to play from our hearts and souls in Memphis, leave it all on the table so to speak. It’s an honor we don’t take lightly.” The excitement created by the IBC is clearly evident, but the band is aware that, with 200 participants, winning will be difficult. But regardless of where they finish in the competition, the IBC is already a positive for the Bob DelRosso Band. Aside from a week of playing and listening to great music, this is an opportunity for the band to network and reach an entirely new audience. “We have not generally played outside of New Jersey,” says DelRosso. “That’s the goal, hopefully we can network and maybe line up some shows outside of our local area.” The Bob DelRosso Band doesn’t have an official Facebook page, but does have quite a number of clips on YouTube. Aside from their usual spots, they’ll be playing several festivals over the summer. The Keyport Summer Concert Series is already booked and they are working on getting into at least one more. New Jersey has an extremely rich music history and the Bob DelRosso Band is going to try to add to it. No matter where they finish, they’re sure to do the state proud. Hard working groups have always endeared themselves to New Jersey and we have one, representing us in a showcase for the world.

t s i g o l o ix Patrycja Wroniecka by CLARE MARIE CELANO
Patrycja Wroniecka, a bartender at the Blue Moon in South Amboy, is a woman of many talents. She bartends, works full-time in the retail industry and, when time allows, indulges in what she calls her, “heaven” -- snowboarding. She explains her love and passion for the sport. “I started boarding about seven years ago. I call it ‘my heaven.’ Whenever I’m on a mountain I feel at peace. It’s great learning how to become one with the board and enjoy the beauty around while doing it. I had the opportunity to go to Chile a few years back. It was honestly the best trip of my life. We were on top of clouds gliding through several feet of pure powder. Imagine falling into a mountain of cotton. That’s exactly what I felt.” Wroniecka has also snowboarded at Hunter Mountain in New York, and Killington and Sugarbush
in Vermont, among other beautiful locations. Patrycja loves the challenge of snowboarding, even admitting that she has a fear of heights. “Every time you get comfortable, there are more challenges ahead, more tricks to learn. I’m terrified of heights and it allows me to fight my fear. Whenever I feel my fear coming over me I take a seat and take a deep breath. I take the view in and make my way down the mountain.” This adventure seeker, who plans on learning how to surf, has also indulged in sky diving in the past. “I only jumped out of a plane four times, but who’s counting?” she teases. “I love the adrenaline rush and being able to face your fears. That’s what life is about, having faith and fighting your fears. Knowing that no matter what, you’ll be okay and you’ll come out stronger. Don’t be afraid.” She usually indulges in her passion of snowboarding with family or friends. “It’s beautiful to be able to share a passion of mine with them,” she relates, adding that she is now very excited about future snowboarding with her two-year-old daughter. “It’s great to be able to board now as a mother,” she enthuses. “I can’t wait until she’s on the mountain with me”
Wroniecka began working in bartending field about seven years ago. “It was easy and quick money while attending school,” she says. “Bartending allows me to have a flexible schedule. At Blue Moon, I’m lucky working with close friends and serving great customers, which makes it lots of fun.”

B R O A D W A Y
A Review on the “They never look at N B R O OFATHEDDOG WIN THE A NIGHT-TIME Y everything,” he continues. The THEO CURIOUS INCIDENT by Marianne Elliott, with a production that pulsating show that surrounds him insists that
Ever had one of those days in the city when you feel like you forgot to put your skin on? Sure you have. It happens when you haven’t slept, or you drank too much the night before, or you’ve been brooding over bad news. All your senses, it seems, have been heightened to a painful acuity; your nerve endings are standing on guard. And every one of the manifold sights and sounds of urban life registers as a personal assault. You’re a walking target in a war zone, and that subway ride that awaits you looms like a descent into hell. Such a state of being is conjured with dazzling effectiveness in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” which opened last October at the Ethel Barrymore Theater. Adapted by Simon Stephens from Mark Haddon’s best-selling 2003 novel about an autistic boy’s coming-of-age, this is one of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadway. So be prepared to have all your emotional and sensory buttons pushed, including a few you may have not known existed. As directed
retunes the way you see and hear, “Curious Incident” can be shamelessly manipulative. But more than any mainstream theater production I know, it forces you to adopt, wholesale, the point of view of someone with whom you may initially feel you have little in common. That’s Christopher Boone, a 15-yearold mathematical genius for whom walking down the street or holding a conversation is a herculean challenge. Played by the recent Juilliard school graduate Alex Sharp, in the kind of smashing Broadway debut young actors classically dream about, Christopher is in some ways a parent’s nightmare. He hates being touched, is bewildered by the common clichés of small talk and is sent into cataclysmic tantrums by any violation of his rigidly ritualized world. But he has a distinct advantage over most of us, and he knows it. “I see everything,” he says, while looking out the window during the first train ride of his life. “Most other people are lazy.
we feel as fully as possible both the privilege and the penalty of seeing everything. Mr. Haddon’s novel is written in the first person, and translating a subjective point of view into external reality is always tricky. As we follow Christopher’s attempts to solve a local mystery — the murder of the dog next door — Mr. Stephens employs an assortment of narrative devices to keep us within his mind. Most prominent among these is the use of a special-education teacher Siobhan, as an intermediary between Christopher, her student, and the audience. In the first act, she reads to us from Christopher’s diary-like account, which he has evidently written at her request. At the beginning of the second act, she makes it clear that she has persuaded Christopher to turn his story into a play. This inevitably leads to a slightly cloying and hoary theatrical self-consciousness, with Christopher bossing around the performers of his mini-memoir.
L i k e Christopher, we are all continually trying to impose internal symmetry on the bewildering world outside. The great achievement of “Curious Incident” lies in how it turns the stage into the ordering mechanism of Christopher’s mind. The realization of more individual interactions, especially between the touchallergic young man and his parents, is often heartbreaking. These clumsy, hopeful moments become metaphors (to use a term Christopher loathes) for the pure, aching effort of making a connection with anybody else. Since the play is a detective story (its title comes from a Sherlock Holmes tale), I won’t say much more about its central mysteries. As is the way of shadowy conundrums, they tend to shrink when exposed to the light. Christopher knows this, but it doesn’t stop him, or us, from basking in the triumphant glow of making it through the eternal obstacle course that is his — and our — daily life.
