Letter to Our Readers
The Halloween season is almost upon us. The world of ghosts and goblins will soon provide us with thoughts and visions from beyond. In recent years, the subject of paranormal activities (beyond what is considered normal) has grown in popularity and interest. In this issue, our writers have chosen to investigate this phenomenon and have uncovered some very interesting facts and examples. Don’t be afraid to take a read. Looking for a change of pace in a dining experience? How about a seasonal craft beer along with some delicious fare on a fresh taco or tortilla! Take a ride over to Jackson and visit Surf Taco, a “casual cuisine” venue where you can relax and grab a little bit of that Margaritaville feeling. On the entertainment side, if you’re looking for a local established band capable of appealing to almost everyone, check out Projex. This group of musicians can entertain all ages and has the ability to cover any decade or genre. Take a few minutes to learn more about them in this month’s Band Profile. As we also approach the season of Oktoberfest, I’d like to introduce you to a young woman who truly knows the meaning and feeling of the “fest”. Meet Christina Katz, a bartender serving at Park 33 in Freehold. Christina moved to Germany and spent three years there. While visiting many small Germany villages, she learned much about the 16 day festival. Christina exclaims “Oktoberfest beers are what Fall would taste like if Fall had a taste.” Read more about this issue’s Mixologist-of-the-Month. Now, a gentleman with a college education and two masters degrees. Not exactly what one would envision when one thinks of a standup comic. Well, meet Angelo Gingerelli, a New Jersey local who loves what he does …. make people laugh. Our Comic Relief feature will tell you more about Angelo and his performances in the Asbury Park area. Okay now, after you’ve reviewed, perused and read this month’s issue, set your leisure plans for the month and get out there with friends and enjoy.

obert Courtney and his staff are preparing Surf Taco in Jackson for one of the restaurant’s busiest seasons; a season that includes scrumptious spicy wings, burritos and tacos, seasonal and Oktoberfest craft beers, and of course, America’s favorite viewing sport -- football. Courtney, who serves as General Manager of Surf Taco in Jackson, explains that the restaurant offers a complete line of
craft beers, including seasonal craft beers to go along with the “coastal cuisine,” that heaps up delicious fare served on fresh tacos and tortillas. Surf Taco offers India Pale Ales (IPAs), Double IPA’s, Imperial ales, Belgians, sours, stouts, and lagers, and numerous limited release domestic craft beers on tap that are brought in from breweries in states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Vermont, Maryland, Oregon and California, among others. Surf Taco offers craft beers from breweries such as Dogfish Head, Stone, Oskar Blues, Allagash and Lagunitas, and more. The beers are rotated, and when one is gone another is ready so customers can enjoy variety and try something new on a regular basis. Since autumn has arrived patrons will have the pleasure of experimenting with fall seasonal craft beers, such as Southern Tier Pumking pumpkin craft beer, which Courtney says is a “huge craze” at this time of year. Surf Taco also brings in representatives from various craft breweries such as Stone, Dogfish Head, Green Flash, Ballast Point, Boulder Beer, and other local breweries such as, River Horse brewery in Lambertville, Carton Brewery in Atlantic Highlands and Kane brewery in Ocean. Brewers will take over Surf Taco’s four taps with unique limited-release craft beers you’re not likely to find anywhere else. Patrons may decide to join the Surf Taco Craft Beer Club where they will learn about limited-release brews form brewery representatives and enjoy sampling the craft beers.
10
Members will be kept informed of special tappings of limited releases and special beer events, as well as what is currently on tap. Also on tap, so to speak, is the Surf Taco Growler Club, which allows its members to fill up a growler with tap beer and then bring it home and back when it needs refilling -- at a discounted price. The Surf Taco staff is knowledgeable and well educated in the art of craft beers and will graciously assist patrons in pairing up their meals with just the right flavorful craft beer. “It’s just like fine wine,” Courtney remarks. “Craft beers provide that same tasting and experimenting experience.” Choose from a wide variety of wings, including Baja Barbecue, Cajun wings, Teriyaki and Buffalo. Also popular is Mango Shrimp Tacos -- fresh hand-battered coconut shrimp topped with homemade avocado lime sauce, cabbage and mango tango salsa made from mango, onion, jalapeño, cucumbers, red pepper and cilantro, then infused with fresh lime and wrapped neatly in a flour tortilla. Another popular creation is the Mahi Mahi Taco -- fresh fish coated in blackened seasoning, grilled to perfection and topped with Surf Taco’s homemade avocado lime sauce. It is served with shredded cabbage and squeezed fresh lime, Pico de Gallo and juicy pineapple chunks, wrapped on a corn tortilla. Courtney emphasizes, “We are famous for our fish tacos, like our renowned Surf Taco made with fresh cod, our Garlic Shrimp Taco and our Salmon Taco.” And don’t forget to give the Tsunami burrito a try. This masterpiece consists of grilled chicken, rice, beans, jack and cheddar cheeses, sour cream and salsa wrapped in two extra-large flour tortillas serve Mojado-style and topped with guacamole, sour cream, Pico de Gallo salsa and served with chips. BBQ Pork Shank bone-in is also on the menu. Another popular choice is the Carne Asada Taco, a grilled taco with steak, cilantro and hot sauce. Surf Taco also offers Wraps, Quesadillas, Enchiladas, and Fajitas, as well as a “killer” burger, according to Courtney. Healthy menu choices feature a gluten-free menu, a vegetarian menu and a “rip to fit” menu which offers guidance on healthy choices of meals. Surf Taco offers fun-filled specials during the week: Monday Game On Trivia Night with Jimmy Steele of the Rat radio,

and Monday night football; Tijuana Tuesday, Wednesday is Open Mic Night, Thursday is Game Night, and Friday nights features Billy Simmons, acoustic guitarist. For anyone looking for an established local band capable of appealing to anyone, Projex is a can’t miss. They entertain all ages when they play with guest performers and their ability to cover any decade and genre, ensuring a sound everyone will enjoy. There are guests who play with the band from time to time, but Projex is primarily made up of five members: lead singer and guitarist Eddie Mac, lead guitarist JJ Tango, rhythm guitarist Kenny Sadowski, bassist Tom DiBenedetto and James J. Vallone Jr. on drums. The current lineup has been together for three years, but they started putting the pieces together over a decade ago. Mac and DiBenedetto have been playing together for 12 years, beginning when Mac joined a friend’s band that DiBenedetto was part of when they needed a singer; they met the rest of the group after meeting and getting to know them on the local band circuit. One of the guest performers who comes on every once in a while is Mac’s son James McIntosh who jumps on drums if he is needed and isn’t busy touring with his own band, Bobby Mahoney and the Seventh Son. It may be a little while until James plays with Projex again though, as he’s traveling with his band to Ontario, Canada in November to promote their album entitled, “Friends in Low Places.” Projex is more than just a rock and roll band. Covering everything from the 60s through today, they guarantee and great

show for all ages. They’ll go from an Elvis Presley song to Hootie & The Blowfish, John Cougar and Bruce Springsteen. They even cover classic punk bands like The Sex Pistols. “We all pretty much grew up on rock and roll. Two guitars, bass and a drum,” says Mac. They bring in artists from other bands to change their sound and cater to a broader audience. They’ve been known to bring on keyboardist Adam Glenn from the band Moroccan Sheepherders, and Rich Taskowitz, the sax player for License to Chill in order to play different genres. Taskowitz is the guest who appears with the band most often as his sax allows Projex to deliver the blues and soul music they also enjoy playing. “We like to cover a lot of Motown and soul,” Mac relates. “I love that soul sound, I love that horn.” They recently added country into their performance as well, expanding
their catalog even further. “When we play shows with other bands they say it’s really cool that we started adding a lot of country rock to our show,” Mac says. “We added six or seven country songs to each show and other bands aren’t doing

that so it breaks things up.” Adding the country element has undeniably expanded Projex’ versatility to appeal to nearly everyone. “A lot of our shows are all ages shows,” the singer notes. Appearing throughout the Jersey Shore between Seaside and Sayreville, Projex usually plays three or four times a month. Their favorite spot, says Mac, is the Driftwood Cabana Club on Ocean Avenue in Sea Bright. “It’s always a party there because you’re playing a tiki bar overlooking the ocean,” he remarks. “People come there ready to party. It’s a great place.” The Driftwood is their staple and they have been playing there for over five years now. They can also be found at Bum Rogers Crabhouse & Tavern in Seaside, The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park and The Junction Bar & Liquors in Belford. Be sure to give them a like on Facebook, find them at ProjexBand.com and listen to their samples at ReverbNation.com/ ProjexBand.

Christina Katz
by CLARE MARIE CELANO
Oktoberfest is something Park 33 bartender Christina Katz is very familiar with. Famous in Germany where residents celebrate the event with lots of beer and tons of food and upbeat music, Katz, whose mother was born in Germany, has actually experienced Oktoberfest in her mom’s homeland Describing the unique beers crafted in small villages for the 16-day Oktoberfest, Katz says, “Oktoberfest beers are what fall would taste like if fall had a taste.” She describes the seasonal autumn beers as spicy, nutty, richer, darker in color and more flavorful than say, a spring-crafted beer. She describes Oktoberfest in Germany, as, “lots of fun with dancing, music, lots of beer and lots of good food in inside venues and outside in the streets,” and the official Oktoberfest toast is “Prost!”
Katz visited a little village in Germany called Gambach, in 2007. She stayed with family for three years, even obtaining citizenship, thereby giving her dual citizenship. While in Germany, Katz attended the University of Giessen. She biked and walked everywhere, made friends and found the village warm and welcoming. It suited her until she became homesick and wanted to come home. While there, however, she learned a thing or two about German craft beers and brought that knowledge back home to the states with her. “Each village in Germany holds its own Oktoberfest and most villages craft their own signature beer for Oktoberfest,” she says. “But, since Gambach is so small they didn’t brew their own so we went two towns over to Licher and bought Licher beer. She adds that some Oktoberfest German beers, such a Paulaner or Hacker-Pschorr are available in the US but village-crafted beers such as Licher, are not. Katz began bartending in Tampa, FL, working on a rolling bar near a marina then as cocktail waitress at
the Blue Martini. When she returned to New Jersey, she tended bar at Court Jester in Freehold before moving to Park 33. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in criminology at the University of Tampa. Her studies in Germany and at Georgian Court College in Lakewood earned her a teaching certificate in early education and special needs. She currently serves the Freehold Township School District as substitute teacher and plans to become a fulltime teacher. If you’re in the Freehold area, stop by Park 33, say “hi” to Christina and learn more about craft and German beers …. “Prost!”

The Sixth Sense… They don’t actually yell, “Boo!” Instead, ghosts or spirits of the dead whose energies remain will manifest in noises without direct cause (knocking sounds, footsteps), unexplained cold spots, disembodied voices/ chatter, dense moving shadows, faint apparitions, electrical anomalies (lights and appliances turning on or off by themselves), and the translation of an intense emotion, such as sadness, anger or grief. Millions of people have had such occurrences, leaving them wondering or afraid. All this activity is considered to be paranormal, which basically means beyond what is considered normal experience and scientifically proven explanation. Although the increasing number of paranormal societies and research by PhD-level authorities collectively endeavor to confirm existence of postdeath spirit activity, the exacting science needed to prove that ghosts exist -- and why -remains elusive. Although not everyone is convinced of the existence of ghosts or hauntings, perhaps because quite a few never encountered a paranormal experience and/or are waiting for “legitimate” science, there are a huge number people who do. According to a HuffPost/ YouGov poll taken in December 2012, 45% of people believe in ghosts and that spirits of the departed return to specific places. In addition, the poll revealed that 59% of adults did not believe they’ve actually 1818
witnessed a ghost, 43% don’t believe that ghosts or spirits can cause harm or interact with the living. An earlier poll (2005) conducted by CBS News, showed that 48% believe in ghosts, and that more than one in five Americans have seen a ghost or have felt a spirit presence.
With more than two dozen paranormal investigation shows on TV, it appears that Americans are captivated by the idea of “what if” these things really do exist, and are clamoring for proof -- caught on camera or recording (electronic voice phenomena, or EVPs -- voices caught on tape that were not heard by the audio operator at the time of recording). Psychic investigator/ clairvoyant and author Melissa Freya explains why she believes these ghost-hunting shows are so riveting: “The desire to know if there is truly something after this life that we are living and thrill of being scared -combined with the popularity of reality television -- has caused a resurgence of paranormal interest. It gave the viewer a way to safely watch from their home as they looked for answers and proof.” However, this national interest is not new. In the Victorian era, there was a mass spiritualism movement, when Americans were fascinated about contacting the dead. It began in 1848 with a prank conducted by sisters, Kate and Margaret Fox, who convinced their family and community that they were being attacked
by a spirit that would make itself known by loud rapping or knocking. This “haunting” gained national attention, and swiftly attracted even wellto-do Americans to take up “spiritualism.” This movement inspired the creation of the Society for Psychical Research in 1882 to investigate paranormal activity, based on scientific protocols at the time.
Since the advent of more cable channels and reality programs, paranormal investigation series have cropped up. There are several dozen, notably “Ghost Hunters,” and “A Haunting,” that rely on first-person accounts and a local paranormal team that investigates the property to capture evidence of paranormal occurrences through the use of sophisticated equipment. Some bring in psychics or intuitives who try to obtain an emotional or personality imprint of an inhabiting spirit or ghost. And here in New Jersey, we have our own serious ghost investigators. Melissa D’Agastino of New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society (NJGHS) remembers investigating a cemetery in Matawan. “When I came to this one particular area, I was doing an EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) session and when I was finished I could not move. It was as if the spirit did not want me to leave. When I went over my evidence, I picked up a woman’s voice on my audio recorder. It was very faint but sounded like it said ‘stay.’ Also in a different part of that same cemetery, where the mausoleums are, I got extremely light headed, which happens when a spirit

is around and uses a lot of my energy to manifest itself. I took a multiple of pictures and got bright orbs that were starting to take form.” Freya has investigated many places throughout New Jersey, but, like D’Agastino, the one that stands out the most would be Rose Hill Cemetery in Matawan. Some of the graves date back to the early 1800s even though the cemetery was officially established in 1958. “One of the perks of being an empath and clairvoyant is that whenever I am in a place that has a history of spiritual activity, the activity increases,” she says. “Not only did I get numerous photographs of orbs and ectoplasm in the air, I also captured disembodied voices.” She adds that a couple spots she investigated in Glen Spey, NY, are rife with ghostly activity; she and her team have been investigating both the Burn Brae Mansion property and Glen Spey Cemetery for nearly four years and “it has been one of the most fruitful interactions I have had. The mansion itself has 17 active spirits, who are intelligent and interactive. Many of the Mackenzie family members haunt the mansion and grounds. Eleanor “Ellie” Mackenzie has been a constant companion during every visit. Ellie was five years old when she passed and loves to talk. I am able to see her when she wants to be seen, but anyone can have a conversation with her. She asks questions, calls people by name, and loves to sing,” she relates.
The Glen Spey Cemetery is October October2014 2014
“
Pat Kibby, CEO, Team Leader and Co-founder of Paranormal Consulting & Investigations of NJ, which was founded in 2011 and now has 12 members, explains that there are several types of ghosts: • Residual or Intelligent. – Residual: A recorded event played back through means we do not yet understand. – Intelligent (also known as earthbound): A person who died but whose spirit remains on earth. • Crossed-over: A person who died and whose spirit went to the “other side” and is just visiting. • Demonic: An evil entity that never existed in human form. • Negative: A non-demonic haunting involving hurtful or negative activity; a generally surly, angry, possessive or anti-social spirit reflecting the person in life.
• Poltergeist: A special type of intelligent haunting characterized by loud sounds and object movement, it is sometimes thought to be a result of psychokinetic (brain energy) activity. There are usually no ghosts involved, yet it can also be a spirit amped up on psychokinetic energy or an entity created from a thought form.
one of the most active cemeteries Freya has encountered; it has both benevolent and malevolent spirits. She says she has captured full-body apparitions, interactive spirits, “and some of the most disturbing audio I have ever recorded. It was here that I captured my full name being said several times. The first time I walked into this cemetery I was surrounded, bombarded by spirits. The photographs I took were nothing like I had ever seen. Thousands of orbs surrounded me and followed me through the cemetery.” Equipment used is the cornerstone to take experiences beyond anecdotal; investigators rely on a variety of technical support. In the past, says Kibby, most Ghost Hunting equipment was repurposed from original uses, but over the past decade more sophisticated specialized equipment has been developed. “However, no piece of equipment can accurately or definitively prove the presence of a spirit,” she asserts. “Rather, each may, at times, provide anomalies that simply can’t be explained.” One of those unexplainable but not uncommon anomalies is the EVP. EVPs, Kibby explains, are categorized into Class A, B, or C based on quality. “Class As can be heard by pretty much everyone and there will be significant agreement on what is heard. Class Bs are not as clear, and different people may hear different things. Class Cs are barely audible and it’s sometimes debatable
as to whether they are really EVPs at all. A few of our favorite EVPs can be found at pcinj.org/evps.html,” she shares. D’Agastino explains that cameras will capture any anomalies such as orbs, vortexes and full-body apparitions, which are rare. Audio recorders can pick up sounds that are at a lower frequency level and cannot be heard by the human ear. “An EMF meter picks up all energy sources including electronics, so in order to make sure we don’t get false readings we make sure we are not around anything that is feeding off an electrical source such as a television, refrigerator etc. We scan all areas first before we do an investigation and record readings from any electronics. Pendulums feed off energy but not from electronics. Being that a pendulum is on a chain and is light in weight, it can move easier and when one encounters a spirit, yes and no questions can be asked.” Although technical equipment is needed to capture evidence, it doesn’t have to be expensive, says Freya. She works with a tech coordinator who uses K2 meters, digital recorders, spirit boxes and other more sophisticated equipment, while the clairvoyant herself uses her iPhone to record audio, video and photos. Perusing the websites of the increasing number of paranormal investigators will yield a cache of chilling images and a trove of EVPs. No doubt to many, “They’re here!”

B R O A D W A Y A Review
Caberetpersonal discomfort
B R O A D WRevival A Y - The
A little more than 16 years after it first opened, and only a decade after it closed, it feels as if the popular Roundabout Theater Company production of “Cabaret” never left Studio 54. Alan Cumming, who won a Tony as the nasty M.C. in 1998, is back, offering a slightly looser, older-but-wiser variation on the same performance. The show’s co-directors, Rob Marshall and Sam Mendes, have returned, too, along with their ace design team, and they haven’t messed around much with a successful formula. Also on board is at least one of the original 1998 Kit Kat chorus girls, Kristin Olness, who plays Helga (as in, “Go ahead, ask Helga!”). The most conspicuous difference is the bright blond actress portraying Sally, a role imperishably created for the Roundabout by Natasha Richardson. The promiscuous, hardpartying Sally is now embodied by a very brave Michelle Williams, who doesn’t look all that happy to be there. I’m assuming that’s more a matter of character interpretation than of
Since Ms. Williams’s Broadway debut is the biggest news in this revival, let’s linger on her. As you probably know, she’s a fine screen actress, and very good onstage, too. Given that she played Marilyn Monroe in the 2011 film “My Week With Marilyn,” for which she received an Oscar nomination, Ms. Williams obviously knows about wrestling with the ghosts of sexy performances past. Leading the Kit Kat girls in nightclub production numbers like “Don’t Tell Mama” and “Mein Herr” with a shiny, metallic vibrato, Ms. Williams comes closer to evoking the musical style of the Depression. And for her climactic performance of the show’s title song, she has the shouty power and shell-shocked stare of someone who’s seen the future and knows that it’s terrifying. But this Cassandra-like aspect is implicit in her performance from the beginning. That means that it’s harder than usual to credit her seduction of the cautious, bisexual Clifford
Bradshaw who falls for her and the town of Berlin because they’re so much damned fun. As Clifford, a young American writer hoping to find inspiration for his novel, says to Sally of their shared life: “It’s so tawdry and terrible, and everyone’s having such a great time. Like a bunch of kids playing in their room — getting wilder and wilder — and knowing any minute their parents are going to come home.” Much of the power of “Cabaret” lies in our being caught up in these revels to such an extent that we at least occasionally forget that we’re heading straight into the abyss of Hitler’s Germany and the Holocaust. Mr. Mendes and Mr. Marshall’s interpretation, then and now, lets us know that we’re in hell almost as soon as we arrive in a theater that has been done up to suggest a black boîte (with stage-side tables) at which we are patrons. The Roundabout edition has become the taking-off point for subsequent productions that seem determined to outdo their
predecessors in shock value. And Mr. Cumming’s M.C., who commandeered a part that Joel Grey would have seemed to own exclusively, has become the new model for most interpretations of the role. The supporting cast is just fine, starting with Mr. Heck, who brings a tainted wholesomeness to the show’s underwritten hero. The theater stalwarts Linda Emond and Danny Burstein are solid as middleaged lovers of different faiths. I especially liked Gayle Rankin as the enterprising streetwalker Fräulein Kost. And who can begrudge Mr. Cumming’s still having such a good time in the part that made him a star? Mr. Cumming’s M.C. noted that he and Ms. Olness’s Helga went back a long way, to the “last century,” in fact. When a few audience members laughed knowingly, he thanked them in the chummy manner of a transgressive Bob Hope on a U.S.O. tour.

6Forethought; the process of thinking about and organizing the activities required to achieve a desired goal.
It’s that time of year again. Time to start thinking about the future, at least in the short-term (the next 12 months). The act of planning for what might lie ahead can be broken down into four types: immediate, short-term, mid-tern and long term.

ESTORE… HELP WA Immediate – you suddenly realize your in-laws are coming to visit for the weekend. What to do? What to get? Dine in or out? This type of situation calls for some quick planning.
You can also contact this Central Call Center to volunteer
Short-term – you’re going on a two week vacation. What do you need to buy? … Stop the mail … Do I need a bathing suit? What do I need to do to get ready? Mid-term – We’re going to need a new car in about six months. Where would I get the best deal? SUV or sports car? Buy or lease?

Whether the planning is for your family or your business, some “homework” -- detail gathering and organizing -- is a requisite. What have we done in the past? Has it worked? What can we do to improve things? In the hospitality business, now is the time to plan for the coming New Year. What can we do to ensure that 2015 will be better than the past year? How can we build more awareness and customer traffic? There is no one answer! Before you set your plans for next year, do your due diligence, listen to those who have experience in the field, find out where to get the maximum out of your targeted investment. In short: “Where are you going to get more bang for your buck?” When you plan appropriately, you have a better ability to control the realization of your goals.
