Letter to Our Readers
We are fortunate to live in a state that offers both a pristine shoreline and an abundance of farm land with a wide variety and of fresh produce to enjoy. On a single weekend, you can visit a “pick-your-own” or farmer’s market with the family in the AM, then relax on a beautiful beach in the afternoon. Read our main feature in this issue to learn more about what’s available to you. Looking for a spot to enjoy a wonderful meal in a cozy atmosphere along with a friendly, experienced staff? Look no further than MJ’s Restaurants offering four location right here in Central NJ. Check out this month’s Restaurant Profile and plan a visit. Then read about two individuals who have truly mastered their respective roles. First, meet Pat Guadagno in our Musician Profile. Pat started as a “saloon singer” in a small bar in Long Branch and has grown to where he now entertains audiences as far away as Nashville, Arizona and Toronto. Yet, he’s always drawn back to New Jersey where he truly loves to play his guitar to hometown fans. Next, a young lady who has fine tuned the art of multi-tasking at the Tilted Kilt in East Brunswick …. bartending and performing the duties of bar manager: inventory control, dealing with vendors and scheduling staff…all while maintaining a smile and friendly personality toward her customers. Meet Lauren Luzuriaga, our Mixologist-of-the-Month. For a bit of an unexpected twist, meet a standup comic with a PhD in neuroscience! Dr. Jono Zalay started standup in Southern California after receiving a science degree as an undergraduate. He then moved to Boston, went to graduate school and continued his career as a standup comic. Read his interview in this month’s Comic Relief feature. Last, but certainly not least, this month we are celebrating one complete year as the newly titled Venues NJ dining & entertainment publication. While under our previous title, we published for six years, our upgraded product as Venues NJ is pleased to celebrate our first anniversary. And we couldn’t have done it without you our readers. As the spokesman from Bartles & Jaymes used to say “…and thank you for your support.” A Special Note: Our condolences go out to the family and friends of New Jersey born (Westwood, NJ) James Gandolfini. We’ll all miss the “Big Guy.”

njoy a wonderful meal in a cozy atmosphere, with exquisite scenery and an experienced staff at MJ’s Pizza Bar & Grill -- with four fun-filled locations: Tinton Falls, Neptune, Middletown and its latest, at the famed Buttonwood Manor in Matawan opening soon. Cozy and casual are the buzzwords at all the locations which offer a bar area to relax and separate dining rooms for more intimate dining.

Happy Hour occurs here every Monday through Friday at the bar. They offer drink specials from 4:00 to 7:00 pm and includes $1$1.50 off draft beers; $5 glasses of house wine; $4 call drinks; and $6 call Martinis. Monday through Thursday at the bar, offers half-price appetizers from 4:00 to 6:00 pm and Friday, a free hot buffet is on tap from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. During football season, MJ’s offers NFL Sunday Ticket at all locations with drink specials and a game-time appetizer menu.
In addition to delicious food, MJ’s at the Falls, located in a historic section of Tinton Falls, allows diners to bask in the view of the magnificent waterfall as they dine. Now that the warmer weather is here, take advantage of the sunny afternoons and/or balmy nights and enjoy meals or cocktails on the outdoor patio deck provided at some of MJ’s eateries. You can savor your meal or enjoy cocktails on the outdoor patio at the Neptune location. The Middletown location has some tables by the front entrance, great for enjoying a drink outside. Although the Buttonwood Manor is not set up for outdoor patio dining for patrons, diners can enjoy the panoramic view of Lake Lefferts from the dining room -- all year long. July 2013
MJ’s offers Standard American fare but with attention to taste and quality that sets this establishment apart from the rest, according to Andrea Perry, marketing manager for MJ’s Pizza Bar & Grill and the Buttonwood Manor. MJ’s chefs use only the finest ingredients, according to Perry, and also use local products when possible. Only top-grade Angus beef is used for all burgers. The menu offers something for everyone, from appetizers to soups, salads, entrees and amazing homemade, scrumptious desserts. Their kids’ menu has proven quite popular for MJ’s youngest diners. “We’re known for our awesome pizza, available in thin or traditional crust,” Perry says, adding that MJ’s pizza “rivals any New York style.” The pizza menu includes, among others, plain, sausage and peppers, creamy ricotta and fresh mozzarella (white), Pesto, Margarita, and MJ’s signature “Granny Pizza,” a square thincrust pizza with fresh mozzarella and plum tomatoes. All are topped with MJ’s homemade pizza sauce and the finest whole milk and lowfat fresh mozzarella. Customers’ favorites include MJ’s delicious signature “Big Burger,” a 10 oz.-ground Angus burger topped with Pepper Jack cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, sliced red onion, frizzled onions and chipotle mayo. The eatery is also known for its wings, available with traditional buffalo sauce, honey Thai or Chipotle BBQ. The Crisp Apple Salad is likewise a frequent fave. Indulge in mixed greens with Granny Smith apples, sun-dried cranberries, candied walnuts, crumbled Maytag Bleu Cheese, and delicious dressing. The “Big Reuben” featuring corned beef and first-cut pastrami, is piled high and topped with crisp sauerkraut, melted imported Swiss cheese, served on toasted rye with Russian dressing. And yes, this too flies out of the kitchen!
Tee’s in Monmouth Beach, joined MJ’s in 2011 and is known for many things, but among them his famous New York-style Cheesecake. Specialty Nights such as “Blues Night” on the third Thursday of the month at the Tinton Falls location and “Bike Night” on the third Tuesday of the month (for the season) at the Neptune location provide extra allure. Guests can also enjoy Cruise Night at the Neptune location (weather permitting) on Mondays through September. Entertainment is offered on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and features a well-rounded mix of acoustic performers, classic rock and newer hits. The MJ’s Neptune location offers a DJ on Wednesday nights who plays tunes from the 1980s. MJ’s at the Buttonwood is expected to open the first week of July. This venue, located on the upper level, also offers 2 banquet rooms, one being a lakeview room accommodating 225 guests that will allow for “granderscale” private events, such as weddings, according to Perry. The other room or the restaurant can cater all your other private parties and special occasion events. MJ’s Restaurants will serve up some memorable experiences. Why not make a point to visit all locations to see each one’s unique charm? We bet you’ll keep returning! Lauren Luzuriaga is a master at multi-tasking. She serves the Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery in East Brunswick, NJ as bartender, mixing up drinks and pulling tap beers, and as bar manager, where she orders up the products, does inventory, schedules the staff and monitors the front and back of the house. The pub, which offers an Irish, Scottish, American and English influence, according to Luzuriaga, opened in September and she’s been part of the staff from the start. “I love coming to work,” she enthuses, adding that she began as part-time bartender and quickly moved to full-time and was quickly

!
There’s nothing like summertime in New Jersey -- very few other states can claim miles of pristine shoreline with an ocean friendly enough for cavorting, as well as a true abundance of farm-fresh fare ripe and ready for healthy, hearty meals at home on the backyard patio. Any summer weekend, you can easily sojourn beachside for a variety of fun events and also peruse our farmers’ markets and farm stands to grace your tables and nourish your families.
Farm Bound
Either before or after a funfilled festive day at the beach, eschew your typical supermarket for fresh -- true Jersey Fresh -- produce and other home-made goodies by shopping at a farmers market. Foodwise, two trends that appear here to stay are “locavorism” and “farm to table.” Both essentially are the same -- you eat the majority of your diet based on locally grown fare. New Jersey has long been known for its corn and tomatoes, but due to the rich quality of our four-season, Mid-Atlantic soil, our farmers are growing hundreds of vegetables, fruits, and culinary spices. And of course, why not pair it with some delicious Jersey wines? Also, farmers markets and roadside farm stands -with more and more cropping up -- now also feature locally made honey from our growing apiaries, eggs, goat cheese, as well as a variety of homemade goodies, from chocolates to zucchini cakes, to herbally infused, no chemicals added skin care! Shop away! (Visit jerseyfresh.nj.gov). Wherever you go this summer, stop at any of these markets or roadside stands.

MOTOWN
the
MUSICAL
Before you even settled in your seats, you’re being dazzled by a sing-off between the Four Tops and Gladys Knight and the Pips and Marvin Gaye later tear into their dueling versions of the enduring classic “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” Snapping their fingers and smoothly wriggling their hips, Diana Ross and the Supremes bop through several of their eartickling hits. There’s Smokey Robinson, too, and Stevie Wonder, Martha and the Vandellas, and Mary Wells. Something close to rapture spreads through the audience when a magical little dynamo, the young Michael Jackson, takes the stage, spinning like a tiny top and singing with a grown man’s soul in his little boy’s voice box. These performers are obviously not appearing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater. Instead, their indelible styles are being effectively recreated by a blazing cast of gifted singers impersonating these pop-chart immortals. Our tour guide on this busy joy ride through the Motor City of the late 1960s and ’70s, and the show’s principal character, is Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records. Mr. Gordy wrote the book for the musical and his recollections of the era and the artists he

discovered form the shaky scaffolding for a musical that is, if nothing else, an efficient endorphin-delivery system for baby boomers. The story begins at the end, in 1983, when a television special celebrating the Motown legacy is being prepared as a disgruntled Berry broods in his Los Angeles home, waffling about whether to participate. He’s bruised by the company’s decline, which has been hastened by the departure of many acts he discovered, groomed and elevated into stardom. The musical then flashes back to the beginnings, when a young Berry — Junior to his large, loyal and loving family — is casting about for a career. A brief stab at boxing fizzles and soon Berry is calling on his family’s money to back his dream of creating a record company. He’s already written and sold a couple of songs to Jackie Wilson, but only by owning publishing rights and producing records can real money be made. More than 50 songs are performed in “Motown,” usually, alas, in truncated versions. Most are simply presented as concert versions by the actors playing the artists who made them famous, but a few are shoehorned into the story as “book” songs. Making way for so much music means that “Motown” breezily scrimps on storytelling. Characters come and go so
quickly we barely have time to register their famous names, let alone get to know them. Stevie Wonder is introduced as a talented tyke in Act I but doesn’t reappear until the second act, fully grown at the keyboards, singing in Washington to promote the creation of a holiday dedicated to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The relationship between Berry and Diana moves to the foreground at various intervals, but even major Motown figures like Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye are reduced to making intermittent cameo appearances. The telegraphic nature of the book derives partly from the impossibility of telling the stories of all the major Motown artists in a single musical. For a full and coherent history of Mr. Gordy’s game-changing music factory, you’d need to check out Gerald Posner’s engrossing book “Motown: Music, Money, Sex and Power.” But audiences don’t go to Broadway musicals to see audiobooks performed live, and few are likely to complain that “Motown” skimps on what they have come to hear: the sweet stream of music that fused the soul of rhythm and blues with the ear worm hooks of pop to create a genre that played a role in America’s changing attitudes toward race in the 1960s.
