Letter to Our Readers

About a year ago, Hurricane Sandy not only disrupted our lives, our properties and our spirits; it also took away a traditional event that most of us look forward to each year --Halloween. With that in mind, our writers decided to focus on that fun-filled event for this month’s main editorial feature. Hope you enjoy the read. Following the tradition of Halloween, many of you will be traveling our region with your families visiting nearby farms, haunted houses, etc. Before or after those excursions, to satisfy your desire for a good meal (and the best BBQ ribs in the state), stop in to Big Ed’s in Old Bridge. It’s a family-friendly venue where you can enjoy a good lunch or dinner while watching a college or pro football game. Read more about it in this month’s Restaurant Profile. A two-man team rockin’ the area and a compassionate young woman we’d like you to get to know. The first, called Night Shift, is this month’s band feature. They’ve been pleasing fans throughout Monmouth and Middlesex for the past five years with their pop classics and one-hit wonders. The latter is a young bartender who works five shifts a week at the Landmark Tavern & Café in South Amboy. Then, she takes care of her ill father at their home and in her spare time, volunteers at an animal shelter bringing comfort to abandoned cats and dogs. If you’re in the area, stop in and say hello to Stacey Teuber, our Mixologist-of-the-Month. Next, for a change of pace, read and learn about a highly respected and very well known theater in Princeton, the McCarter Theater. Founded in 1930, it is one of the most active cultural centers in the country and is the region’s leading performing arts center. Learn more in this issue’s Behind The Footlights feature. In addition to the abovementioned articles, this issue is packed with information and ideas to help you plan your dining and entertainment activities for the month. Enjoy!

I

f you’re searching for the best BBQ ribs in the state and you’re on Route 34 in Old Bridge, your search is over.

Big Ed’s BBQ at 305 Route 34 will satiate your hunger for BBQ ribs with all the “fixins,” at this one-of-a-kind, “all-you-can-eat ribsall-the-time” eatery that is reminiscent of a BBQ establishment you would encounter down south where these types of eateries are prevalent. Ed Stoppiello (“Big Ed”), owner and operator of the family-run business, did plenty of research, including trips to the south, before he and his wife Erin opened what he calls, “Home of the Best Ribs in Jersey. We wanted to bring something unique to the state,” Big Ed said of the couple’s original plan for the restaurant in 1992. They and their children -- Brooke, Carmine, Kristi and Ed Jr. -- all work hard to make you feel at home in their place that seats approximately 180 guests between the 20-stool bar and the 40 tables.

F

rom its farm country design, complete with a large tractor out front, to the oldfashioned passenger wagon surrounded by “Old West” figures (including cowboys, pigs and cows -- some in aprons holding a beer or a BBQ utensil), to the intoxicating aroma of BBQ ribs and chicken, this eatery offers more than just dining -- it provides what die-hard rib fans might even describe as a “spiritual experience,” so mouthwatering, so tender and so falling-off-the-bone 10

are the beauties that are prepared and served up fresh daily. Big Ed calls his BBQ a “destination” restaurant, with a wide-spread customer base of new and repeat customers. People visit from throughout New Jersey, Staten Island, New York City, and Pennsylvania, among other places, according to Big Ed.

O

ctober is the busiest month at Big Ed’s with his Ribtoberfest, begun over 20 years ago, in full swing. Many of his regular customers have begun a tradition visiting Big Ed’s before pumpkin or apple picking or a Halloween hayride, or after the Halloween activities. So why not make Big Ed’s your new family tradition and join countless others who consider a visit to the Big Ed’s BBQ as important as the fall festivities they attend? Just call ahead for reservations Monday through Thursday. The restaurant does not take reservations Friday, Saturday and Sunday during Ribtoberfest, due to the overwhelming demand on those days. Big Ed’s is known for the best Baby Back Ribs, Spare Ribs, St. Louis Ribs, as well as Pulled Pork and Pulled Chicken, for those who do not eat pork. In addition to the famous ribs, Big Ed’s also offers much more, except pasta. The restaurant serves up chicken dishes, such as Cajun Chicken Parm, plain Chicken Parm, Grilled Chicken, Fried Chicken or Blackened Chicken. Juicy Strip Steaks, Texas T-Bone Steaks, and seafood dishes, such as

farm-raised Catfish and shrimp dishes, and sandwiches are on the menu. Don’t forget the delicious starters, such as Chili Cheese Stuffed Potato and Chili Cheese Onion Potato Skins. Big Ed’s also does a big bulk-item business, preparing half and full trays of yummy ribs and “fixins” for parties. The restaurant does not do outdoor catering but will supply your party with appetizers, such as hot wings, baked beans, chili, apple fritters, numerous BBQ and chicken dishes, as well as a variety of salads. Sports fans will enjoy the 36 HDTVs to watch their favorite games, including the NFL Sports package. Happy Hour prices are extended on Monday and Thursday nights and all-day Sunday during football season. A full line of liquor and 24 beers on tap are available here. On Saturday nights, karaoke takes center stage.

B

ig Ed holds what he calls “Family Friendly Football Sunday,” where wives and kids are encouraged to come and watch the games together in this familyoriented restaurant. “Why go where the rowdies go?” he asks. This famous BBQ restaurant has been Zagatrated and featured in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The StarLedger, New Jersey Monthly, Greater Media Newspapers, the Asbury Park Press, and Home News Tribune, among others. So, what about that tagline that declares “All You Can Eat, All the Time?” Big Ed says, “We call them reorders. People say to us, ‘I’d like some more,’ and they get it.”

Having been playing for five years, almost two with its current lineup, NIGHT SHIFT has been keeping Monmouth and Middlesex Counties rocking all night long to popular classics and memorable one-hit wonders several times a month. Kurt Grotyohann on bass, Bruce Galbraith and Frank Stukey on guitar and Rich Vanderburgh on drums make up the band, though they also respectively go by Karsh, Bru, Franko and Hey Rich on stage. There is no lead singer as they rotate vocals in order to best match up with the original artist and create some excellent harmonies.

What I Mean’ by Lee Michaels, or ‘It Don’t Come Easy’ by Ringo Starr. We just started playing ‘I’m Your Captain’ by Grand Funk. We do ‘Locomotive Breath’ by Jethro Tull.”

NIGHT SHIFT keeps the audience involved in the performance. “If people want to go up and sing and they look like they may be able to sing or we’ll talk to them during break time and flush them out a little bit,” says GroGrotyohann and Stucky have been playing together for more than 20 years tyohann. “Rich goes out with a wireless mic and rounds up a few ladies and and began NIGHT SHIFT when Vanderburgh joined them five years ago. hands them maracas and tambourines and we ask them to come up and Galbraith is the newest member having joined the group about a year sing ‘Ride Sally Ride.’ Our big thing is we like to get the crowd involved so and a half ago. “We try to adhere to the definition of being a cover band they feel like they’re part of the band.” Also to this end, NIGHT SHIFT is and just be a live juke box,” explains Grotyohann. The band’s repertoire great at responding to fans on its Facebook page which adds to the fanspans many decades and genres from Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and The friendly experience even when they’re not playing. Allman Brothers to Kiss, Black Sabbath and Johnny Cash. The Grateful Dead, Grand Funk Railroad, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Billy Joel, The guys also never play the same show twice, often switching up their Bruce Springsteen and many more also routinely get covered, allowing for performances and formulating their set list to adhere to the demographic anyone to enjoy themselves without discriminating against age and musi- of the venue. Some nights it’s a double-down where their set consists of cal tastes. back-to-back songs by the same artist throughout the night, A typical night consists of three sets of 16 songs, with each set offering a different vibe. “The first half of the first set is usually a little mellow because people are still eating dinner,” says Grotyohann. “The second set is really the dance set and then the third set you tend to get younger people in who are there to drink and listen to the band and we’ll move into like newer stuff like 80s and 90s and play what’s classic rock to them.”

while other evenings they do a rock and roll smorgasbord where they won’t repeat an artist for the entire gig. NIGHT SHIFT has shows coming up at Runway 34 in Wall, Rivoli’s Grill & Chill in Howell, Bayshore Bar & Grill in Hazlet, Colts Neck Inn in Colts Neck and Ryan’s Pub and Sports Bar in Monroe. For band and contact information, show listings and a complete list of songs covered by NIGHT SHIFT, be sure to check them out on Facebook and ReverbNation. What sets NIGHT SHIFT apart is they don’t just play the standard bar songs like “Mustang Sally” and “Brown Eyed Girl,” but they also play songs that aren’t heard as often anymore that still bring back positive memories. “We really enjoy playing one-hit wonders and lost classics people haven’t thought about, maybe the classic rock radio stations aren’t playing them -- songs like ‘Do You Know 12

Three cats at home provide companionship to both Teuber and her dad. All rescue animals, Teuber said that the youngest one, Karma, is her baby. The boy cats, Luis and Angel, are also part of the family. And, a 16-year-old turtle named “Miss

Stacey Teuber BY CLARE MARIE CELANO

Stacey Teuber and her dad, Neil, are best friends. And although she tends bar at least five or six shifts a week, Teuber manages to make a point to spend time with her dad, who had heart surgery years ago, and is now on permanent disability. The two have a unique relationship, and support one another in all they do. This father and daughter have a lot in common, including their love of animals -- those in the home they share, and those that they regularly visit at the Perth Amboy Animal Shelter. In between working at the Landmark Tavern & Café in South Amboy, Stacey is around to help her dad when needed. “He has good days and bad days,” she reveals, adding that she and her dad live in the family’s 100-year-old home in Perth Amboy. “He’s always been so independent, so recovery and rehabilitation has been difficult for him,” she relates.

After working in retail, selling shoes for years, she came to bartending, a career she found provided her with more of an opportunity to socialize with her customers. She also bartended in a corporate restaurant, but found it was not for her. She prefers the “family feeling” of the Landmark Tavern. “When I started to go to bars, I thought it was so cool to watch the bartenders,” she says. “The job seemed so glamorous and a lot of fun. I didn’t realize then how much work was involved.” Teuber remembers her first experience pouring a shot at her first bartending job at The Courthouse Inn in Perth Amboy, revealing that she was “super terrified.” But she learned it well, and took her skills to the Liberty Tavern, in Fords, where she learned to multi-task. “I was bartending, waitressing, answering phones and I loved it. I learned how to do a million things at once,” she comments.

T,” who loves to watch “The Maury Show,” is also an important family member. In between work shifts and her dad’s charity work, the two make regular visits to the animal shelter t o donate food and watch the animals. When she’s not hanging out with dad or rescuing or visiting animals at the shelter, Stacey enjoys her time working at the Landmark Tavern, a job she “loves.” she bartends and waitresses and enjoys both.

A Neighborhood Tavern with Sports Bar Flair

Although she loves bartending, returning to college to pursue a journalism or communications career is on her horizon -- and she asserts that she can see herself “someday, in the middle of a tornado, covering the news.”

ncients and modern mystics believe that the veil between the spirit world and the living world is the thinnest on October 31, a time when restless souls pierce through to haunt the living.Through the centuries, any fear-inducing human monstrosity (zombies, vampires, Frankenstein-type reanimations, evil witches, etc.) or iconic phobia (spiders, bats) have come to share the scare party. Characterizing the “spirit” of Halloween, fear is fun. The art of the scare is expected and is everywhere; it is a safe scare, as we know it is all in good fun. But still ... A demon called Sandy took Halloween away from us last year and this year, Halloween is more anticipated than ever, especially as the Garden State is known for its true grit maneuver, called a “Jersey Comeback.”

COSTUMES

From the cute and whimsical packaged costumes for wee ones, to the home-made, jerryrigged ones we make ourselves, the costume we choose and our kids demand is purely reflective of our personalities. And times, of course, have changed. Up to a couple of decades ago, it was rare that adults joined the costuming fun; now, everyone of all ages and all walks of life enjoy getting “boo-tiful.” We also tend to outfit our abodes and offices as well. This has led to a boom in the holiday industry, with Halloween-specific national tradeshows catering to retailers. For example, Transworld’s Halloween & Attractions Show (HAAshow.com) is now in its 19th year, with hundreds of booths showcasing tons of new products. A large mass of those Hal-

loween products, costumes and home decor are available right here. For example, Seasonal World (nearby Great Adventure’s annual Fright Fest, Clarksburg) transforms itself into a Halloween Super Store with costumes, large air-blown ghoulish inflatables, to decor for your porch/patio, yard, foyer, mantles, and even the garage, plus all the party essentials for your most devilish Halloween party yet. Its website (NJhalloweencostumes. com), offers a description of the range of costumes: “from Leg Avenue, Disguise, Rasta Imposta and Rubies just to name a few. You will find children’s costumes (infants to teens) from Fairytale classics like Little Red Riding Hood to favorites from screen and stage - superstars to super heroes, cartoon characters, reality stars, Star Wars to Transformers to Alice in Wonderland to Avatar and more.” Meanwhile, at Halloween Express (Route 9, Manalapan), a very popular seasonal “pop up” store, you can pay homage to Reality TV’s blockbuster show, Duck Dynasty; the costumes are here, so unleash your inner Si. Seasonal World’s “Women’s Sexy Costumes,” provides a delightfully provocative nod to the 1940s as well as other distinctively retro looks, all quite fetching and still in good taste. Here, the “Men’s Sexy Costumes,” however, go more for the frat-boy mentality and literally focus on comical expressions of sex. If you have a ribald sense of humor and are not afraid to potentially offend some, you’ll be the hit at any Halloween party. At Halloween Express, “sexy” is not “slutty,” it’s liberating, an embracing of a woman’s unique sense of feminine mystique and self esteem. Its website explains: “Halloween is the one night of the year when many

women can step out of their comfort zone and not be alone in doing so. Sexy costumes can be sweet and innocent or erotic and risqué.” Here, you will also find a resplendent selection of artfully designed costumes to magnify your distinctive inner vixen. Both retailers’ baby costumes are truly adorable, and hundreds of photos will be taken to commemorate baby’s first Halloween. Toddler costumes are colorful and eye-catching; and yes, Moms, they are all very comfortable for your “little monsters.” Costumes for older girls tend to focus on the “princess” theme with a solid helping of recognizable characters such as Betsy Ross, Wonder Woman, Strawberry Shortcake, among others. (Oh yes, there are costumes too for your pooch. If you have a cat, rabbit, hamster or iguana, you may still have to create your own little costumes for these critters but as the Halloween industry grows, this may change soon.) For your DIY costumes, venture to these stores to complete your look: you can find funky spectacles, wigs/falls, temporary hair colors, makeup galore, fake nails, fake teeth, and accessories, all to complete your unique character. Brock Farms’ Colts Neck location turns “Spooktacular” every autumn and Halloween, with a treasure trove of ghastly displays to use for your own haunted house. There’s also a ton of fun for kids, and non-scary autumn decor items, including magnificent mums, perfect pumpkins, smiling scarecrows and more. Trick out your entire home -- by creating your own haunted house. All three retailers have a mammoth supply of offerings. Fun idea: create your own ghost story (with help from the kids of course) to regale guests as to why your house is so haunted. October 2013

Cinderella

A Review

March 2013 – “OMG, everybody, they’re doing instant makeovers on Broadway!” First, this scruffy fox and raccoon suddenly turn into total studmuffins in satin suits. And hen — this is the best part — this girl’s lame, retro peasant-chic outfit is transformed, right before our eyes (and while she’s singing), into a red-carpet ball gown. Make that two ball gowns: one white and one gold. “Cinderella,” that ultimate and most enduring of makeover shows, is back in NYC. Specifically, “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” a work that started out as a madefor-television musical in 1957, opened at the Broadway Theater. And while running now for over six months and targeting today’s “little princesses”, this modern day version is a wonderful show for the whole family. From a new book by Douglas Carter Beane and directed by Mark Brokaw, the show is both traditional and up to date. This “Cinderella” wants to be reassuringly old-fashioned and refreshingly irreverent, sentimental and snarky, sincere and

ironic, all at once. The keynote songs from the original have been retained. And anyone who swooned however many decades ago over “Ten Minutes Ago,” the prince and Cindy’s musical equivalent to Romeo and Juliet’s “palmers’ kiss” scene, will find that it is sung quite fetchingly here. There’s been a whole lot of fiddling with the plot too to give it politically progressive substance and those mandatory messages about self-esteem and self-empowerment. The prince’s parents have been eliminated, replaced by a devious and manipulative regent figure, Sebastian who tricks the naïve prince into signing bills that repress and rob his people. So when Cinderella finally gets the chance to talk to her dream date at that immortal ball, instead of whispering sweet nothings, she says, “You need to open your eyes to what’s happening in your kingdom.” Like the reinvented cartoon fairy-tale heroines of the past several decades, this Cinderella is no passive damsel waiting for a rescuing knight. She takes charge of her destiny, so much so that she doesn’t lose that glass slipper; she hands it to the

prince. It’s a conscious choice, see; she controls her narrative. And, by the way, the prince must undergo a similar process of re-education, which will allow him to conquer his self-doubts and introduce democracy to his kingdom. Of course no one’s really going to “Cinderella” for its politics. They go for the songs (among Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most confectionary) and the dances (a lot of mock-medieval capering, choreographed by Josh Rhodes). And the scenery (by Anna Louizos), which in this version includes a “Beauty and the Beast”-like forest through which walks a “Lord of the Rings”-style giant tree creature who appears in the very first scene. And, oh yes, the dresses, which have been left to the capable and industrious hands of William Ivey Long. The showstoppers in this version aren’t the songs so much as those instant costume changes from rags to riches by our girl Cindy. And did I mention that fabulous wedding dress worn in the finale? That one brought down the house.

A gathering place for Irish tradition and family fun!

Behind the Footlights McCarter Theater, Princeton, NJ by Steve Ortlieb

Over the past year, we’ve provided an interesting array of theaters and venues available to Garden Staters. From the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank to the lesser known Surflight Theater in Beach Haven. This month we’ve selected the highly respected and very well known McCarter Theater Center for the Performing Arts in Princeton. The McCarter has a long and storied history. Founded in 1930, it is one of the most active cultural centers in the country and is the region’s leading performing arts center. During the 1930s, due to its proximity to New York’s Theater District, many shows had their preBroadway showcases here. The seating capacity was reason enough for America’s stars and playwrights to choose the McCarter for their out-of-town premiers. As with many of the regional theaters in New Jersey, the McCarter is both a presenter of performing arts as well as a professional producing theater. The McCarter’s programming centers around its world-class “Theater Series.” In fact, its interest in and cultivation of new artists, playwrights, performers and directors are widely respected. Play development, music, dance and special events, as well as educational development are all attributes of the McCarter which make it a unique blend of both a teaching and professional theater organization. The people responsible for the accolades

26

and consistency are too numerous to fit into one small column, but one name cannot be ignored -- Emily Mann, Artistic Director/ Resident Playwright, is now in her 23rd season where she has overseen more than 125 productions. Under her extraordinary leadership, the McCarter was honored with the 1994 Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater. Her awards and nominations would be the envy of anyone with twice her years of experience, and she most recently was the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Princeton University and was named 2011 Person of the Year by the National Theater Conference. As an educational theater, audition workshops for high school students and a K-12 after school program are a couple of offerings. Class trips are highly encouraged as a way to introduce young people to the excitement of theater and the performing arts. On the McCarter website an entire section is dedicated to the numerous ways in which the young and not so young can learn and grow through theater. The McCarter’s schedule of events for 2013-2014 reads like a Manhattan telephone book. As for live theater, the annual production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” will run the month of December and the August Wilson play “Fences” will run in January and February. The season’s dance repertoire includes Savion Glover’s celebration of taps in

STePz and the Rudolph Nureyev State Ballet Theater will make its McCarter debut with Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty.” The “Signature” season is part of what separates the McCarter from many others in scope and scale. Scheduled are, in no particular order: Kevin Kline, Audra McDonald, Lewis Black, The Peking Acrobats and a host of others, equally as impressive. This is followed up by the music season and the American Repertory Ballet season. It’s safe to say that the McCarter will not experience too many quiet evenings. Recently, in the McCarter’s effort to maintain its connection to the community and what audiences really want, a new endeavor, “McCarter Community Think,” was created, the first of three conversations with community members that the theater hopes will spark new ideas and ways for the theater to improve its engagement with local audiences. There will be two more in-person sessions with each participant receiving a voucher for two tickets to the Theater Series and online survey participants will be entered into a drawing for theater membership. For additional information visit mccarter. org. Plan on leaving yourself plenty of time as this website is incredibly in depth and informative.

Heroes Behind The Badge recounts the harrowing stories of law enforcement officers who were caught in the line of fire and survived, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice. FORTITUDE

Strength of mind that enables a person to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage.

Over the past year, a very wide section of our region has gone through many stages of adversity, from minor inconvenience to total devastation. The hurricane of 2012 tested the true grit of hundreds of thousands of residence, especially those along the ocean, bays and rivers. Most, but not all, have recovered and rebuilt their properties and their lives.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchases by visiting countbasietheatre.org or calling the box office at 732-842- 9000.

Most recently, a more targeted section of our area, once again suffered a devastating blow. Last month’s boardwalk fire in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights delivered a second round of hurt to a business community within a four block section of the area. Quite a few of these establishments were within our own hospitality industry. Having just recovered from Hurricane Sandy, the owners of these businesses watched as a horrific fire once again destroyed their livelihoods and their lives.

About NLEOMF: The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is the nation’s monument to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Dedicated on October 15, 1991, the Memorial honors federal, state and local law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and protection of our nation and its people.

The Memorial features two curving, 304-foot-long blue-gray marble walls. Carved on these walls are the names of more than 19,000 officers who have been killed in the line of duty throughout U.S. history, dating back to the first known death in 1791. Unlike many other memorials in Washington, DC, the National Law Enforcement Officers The Memorial is ever-changing: new names of fallen officers are added to the monument each spring, in conjunction with National Police Week.

cane Sandy Notifica What was most impressive to me was the reactions of these victims of adversity. Once the fire was quickly extinguished (thanks to the heroic efforts of over 400 firefighters. and first responders), overwhelmingly, the business owners responses were: “we’ll be back”, “we’ll rebuild, what else can we do?” This “true grit” response shows the courage of the human spirit. In the face of unbelievable misfortune, these people find the strength to find a positive attitude and look forward rather than throwing in the towel and walking away. Let’s hope the federal, state and local authorities find a way to cut through the red tape and delays to quickly help these business owners come back strong. And once they do, let’s be sure to show our support. They deserve it.
