Letter to Our Readers
Springtime is finally here! The cold weather is gone and it’s finally time to get out and explore. Enjoy the county parks and picnic grounds, the boardwalks and, yes, the vineyards throughout our state. Not more than 20 years ago, the idea of exploring a wine estate in New Jersey was laughable. Today, there are 42 member wineries throughout our state. This time of year, and again in the fall, these venues host a variety of events and activities for your enjoyment: tours, tastings, music festivals and more. In this issue’s main feature, our editor has compiled a variety of such events for your reading enjoyment. Please do, then go and enjoy. Something “old,” something “new” all at one iconic dining and nightlife destination. That’s Martell’s Tiki Bar and its new restaurant, Martell’s Lobster House. Delight in the familiar oceanfront, air-conditioned dining while feasting on the freshest, high quality seafood. Read more in this issue’s Restaurant Profile. Next on this month’s list for informative reading is music. I enjoy listening to blues music, but it’s difficult to find in this area. Thanks to Chuck Lambert and his band, that is changing. Chuck and the band started performing together about six years ago and play a steady gig schedule throughout Monmouth and Middlesex counties. Most notably, Chuck performs a Blues Jam every Thursday nights starting at 8:00 pm. If you’re into good blues, check out Chuck and his band in this month’s Band Profile. And, on the comic side, it’s always fun to find and experience a new stand-up comedian. Well, our regular contributor, Steve O will introduce you to JC Hendricks, a two-year veteran who’s building quite a resume for himself. Turn to our Comic Relief feature to read his interview with Steve. In closing, I’d just like to remind you that each complete monthly issue of Venues NJ is now available for your reading pleasure in digital form and can be accessed through all major social media outlets. Enough said. Now venture forth in this friendly spring weather -- eat, drink and enjoy.

The Chuck Lambert Band ...there something everyone
Chuck Lambert brings over 40 years of blues guitar experience to the stage and he has surrounded himself with some superbly talented musicians. The pieces of the band began fitting together six years ago when Lambert was playing with his current bass player James Keenan, who introduced him to drummer Jay Battle. Piano and keyboard player Tony Tota joined in 2009 after he and Lambert met at The Blue Moon Jam. Finally, there’s saxophonist Eric Salkin, who Lambert was introduced to three years ago and began playing with the band in the last year.
Though Lambert provides the namesake of the band, each member has a wealth of experience. Keenan has been performing since he was 13 and has opened for acts such as The Wailers, the Jerry Garcia Band and The Roots. Battle has toured nationally with Ska band Inspecter 7. Tota began playing piano at five years old and could play Beethoven by 14, and Salkin began playing the saxophone at eight and first performed in a club at 13. Lambert himself was introduced to guitar by his uncle when he was four and took lessons from Freddie Green from the Count Basie Orchestra at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He has played with many famous blues guitarists including John Lee Hooker and J.B. Hutto. The Chuck Lambert Band plays a steady schedule throughout Monmouth, Middlesex and Somerset Counties. The band hosts the Jazz and Blues Jam at The Blue Moon in South Amboy every Thursday night, and Lambert and Brennan play at Giamano’s Restaurant in Bradley Beach every Tuesday. The guys also routinely play Robin’s Nest Rhythm & Blues in Linden, Pagano’s Uva on Main in Bradley Beach, and the Walt Street Pub and Gotham in Red Bank. They keep the sets fresh by bringing in generations of classic covers and combining them with original pieces. “I mix my originals in with songs that people know in order to create a kind of continuity of the musical history and the musical experience that I’m going through,” explains Lambert. “Even though I might play a song by BB King, the song right after it might be one of my own.”

The Chuck Lambert Band has participated in the local battle multiple times, winning the trip to Memphis twice. They have also toured Montreal several times and make the occasional journey to New York City and Philadelphia. While the band has played with the best blues bands in the world, Lambert has also been recognized as one of the best blues guitarists -- he was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame as a master blues artist last September. “It was a great honor and it’s nice to be recognized for the effort and energy that you put into music,” Lambert says. “I think I have a lot more in the tank. I look at it as a milestone in a long road.” Lambert and the band now have plenty of time to achieve all the milestones as he retired from his full-time job as a director of the Old Bridge YMCA a few years ago. One thing he hopes to accomplish by the end of this year is to get back in the studio to record an album; the band recorded a promotional EP in 2013 prior to its last Memphis trip. “I’d like to get in the studio and do a real original music CD using all the influences that have come my way,” Lambert says. “Not just playing the blues, but doing some jazz on it, maybe some rock, who knows.” Whatever the next milestone is, Lambert will be sure to value it as he has throughout his career. “Music is a wonderful experience to me, a cultural and social experience to be involved in,” he relates. “I feel blessed that I’m able to play and I appreciate every opportunity to play for people and I respect and honor the individuals that I get to play with.” Visit ChuckLambert.com for the band’s schedule, music samples, contact information and more. You can also like its Facebook page -- Facebook.com/ TheChuckLambertBand.
The Chuck Lambert Band plays a ton of local shows, and also had the opportunity to play with the best blues bands in the world. The Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation holds a battle of the bands every year where the winner gets the chance to go to Memphis for the International Blues Challenge and compete against the top blues bands from all over the world.

StartWining! Not more than 20 years ago, the idea of enjoying a wine estate in New Jersey was laughable. Even though the Garden State had a few thriving wineries, not much fanfare was given to them. However, each year, more vineyards are launching new varietals, and new ones are being cultivated for production and launch as well. There’s just something magical about our soil
The Garden State Wine Growers Association (GSWGA) has done stellar work helping vineyards launch, and acting as a premier promoter of our wineries, their products, and their events. From its website, the GSWGA is a coalition of 42 member wineries throughout New Jersey. Founded in 1984, the association has driven exponential growth through wine education initiatives, cooperative marketing campaigns, and a slate of annual events dedicated to taking our wines across New Jersey, and encouraging people to visit the wineries. Equally important, GSWGA also serves as an educational and informational resource for current and prospective grape growers, with the significant goal to improve the quality and quantity of grapes and wine being produced in the state. This is accomplished in part by working closely with the Rutgers Agricultural Experimentation Station network throughout the state, and the newly formed Rutgers Wine Grape Resource Center. Further, GSWGA creates and maintains positive relationships with state and local government, and advocates on all levels for wine grape industry interests. The association also serves as a resource to those seeking assistance in navigating governmental compliance issues during the winery licensing and permitting process. All this activity is the force behind the significantly increased availability of delicious New Jersey wines, which are winning more and more medals in national and international wine competitions. Through the GSWGA and its wineries, New Jersey is definitely creeping up on California’s Napa Valley as a serious wine destination.

Further, each year is featuring more and more wine festivals. Why not make a point to attend a few? Mother’s Day weekend -- May 9 and 10 -will be lively at our state’s wineries. Treat all the moms in your life to special tastings, brunches, giveaways and more at wineries throughout New Jersey. Just visit newjerseywines.com, to select which one she will enjoy. Or, try a wine trail. Each participating winery prepares its own special events for the special Mother’s Day Wine Trail Weekend.
Memorial Day Weekend – May 22 – 25 -- with the Blues, Wine & BBQ Festival will be held at beautiful Schooley’s Mountain Park in Long Valley, Morris County. Festival organizers say to make sure you get there early on Saturday, because you don’t want to miss the awards ceremony for the New Jersey Wine Competition at 1:30, at the music tent. Cheer on your favorite local wineries to see who wins the coveted Governor’s Cup trophies for best grape, fruit, and dessert wines, as well as the Winery of the Year Award. This event is touted by its organizers as being “the state’s largest Memorial Day Wine BBQ cookout.” Bring your appetites because this festival, besides featuring delicious samplings of NJ wines, will also have delicious fare from some of our state’s renowned barbeque pitmasters. Further, entertainment will be featured -- great bands such as Slim Chance & the Gamblers playing the stage on Saturday, followed by The Fins on Sunday. And on Sunday at 4:00 pm, the winner of the 2015 passport contest will be announced; he or she will win a wine-tasting trip to Spain. In early September (5 and 6), jazz it all up while enjoying wine at 2015 Jazz it Up Wine Festival which will offer delicious food, a wide variety of tasty wines, and the sweet sounds of jazz to while away the late summer hours during Labor Day Weekend. As of press time, the Monmouth County park location still has yet to be chosen, so check back with the GSWGA website (newjerseywines.com). There will also be kids’ activities, craft vendors and much more. Cost per person is $25.
Wine Festival, held at the historic Burlington County Fairgrounds in Columbus. Here, you can sample hundreds of locally produced wines from 20 of New Jersey’s wineries. Beyond delicious wines, there will also be live bands, food trucks, and family fun. As a special new feature this year, event organizers announced they are expanding upon the Jersey Fresh theme by holding a Farmer’s Market at the festival. Enjoy the late season bounty, and celebrate all thing agriculture in the Garden State. Cost per person is $25. Early in October (3 and4), GSWGA invites you to “raise a glass” at the Grand Harvest Wine Festival in Morristown. Celebrating a bit of the harvest season, where wineries have spent the prior six weeks picking, carrying, de-stemming, crushing, fermenting… making the latest tasty vintage of New Jersey wines. At the event, 20 Garden State winemakers will be offering tastings from their estates, and you can also enjoy live bands, delicious foods, craft vendors, kids’ activities, and a two-day slate of food and wine talks given by guest speakers from around the state. This is an educational as well as entertaining event!
Wine Happenings in May Every month is filled with wine events all weekend long and such events are blooming in May.
Later on in the month, September 26 and 27, enjoy either or both days at the Jersey Fresh

B R O A D W A Y A Review
As father of the it, O the N B bride R might O putA “Oy.” “It Shoulda Been You,” which opened on last month at the Brooks Atkinson Theater, confirms the sad truth that weddings — those supposed celebrations of everlasting love — bring out the worst in some people. That includes cynics, showoffs, heavy drinkers, envious have-nots and, it would seem, the creators of American musicals. The last big wedding-themed show I remember on Broadway was “A Catered Affair” (2008), a singing adaptation of Paddy Chayefsky’s 1956 movie that turned the sentimental tale of a blue-collar bride into a dishwater-gray dirge. “It Shoulda Been You” takes the opposite tack. It’s so aggressively bubbly it gives you the hiccups. Featuring a book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove, with music by Barbara Anselmi, this production would seem to be hoping to capitalize on the success of reality
television, laugh-fests D Was wellAas cinematic Y like “Bridesmaids.” But this show, directed by the actor David Hyde Pierce and starring Tyne Daly and Harriet Harris as battling future mothers-in-law, also looks further back for inspiration. I mean way back, as in the 1920s, when a sappy little comedy called “Abie’s Irish Rose” became a runaway hit over the strenuous objections of the New York critics. That play portrayed the familial furor caused by the altar-bound romance between a Jewish boy and a Catholic girl. In “Shoulda,” it’s the bride (Sierra Boggess) who’s Jewish, and the groom (David Burtka) the gentile. But there’s plenty of the same old interdenominational kvetching, except that now it’s set to music. In other ways, “Shoulda” feels more like a product of the mid-20th century, when middle-class sex comedies had both a wholesome twinkle and a dirty leer. Think of plays like “The Tunnel of Love” and
“Any Wednesday,” or television series like “Love American Style.” “Shoulda” — set in a fancy hotel where the wedding is to take place — occupies that treacherous comic ground between smirky and perky. Mining an illusion of charm from such terrain is hard, if not impossible, work for any contemporary performer. Not that the eminently talented ensemble members here don’t do their best to fill out the paper-doll stereotypes they have been asked to embody. In addition to Ms. Daly (as Judy Steinberg, the Jewish bulldozer mother of the bride) and Ms. Harris (as Georgette Howard, the wasp-tongued mother of the groom), the cast includes such Broadway stalwarts as
Chip Zien (as Judy’s henpecked husband) and Edward Hibbert (as a fey wedding planner). There are some ways in which the plot diverges from the template of decades ago. Our bride and groom — and their maid of honor and best man — turn out to have a secret or two to spring on their combined families. However, longstanding grievances and tensions are dissipated with the wave of a feel-good wand. The show’s happy ending may be purely 21st century, yet, it has the feeling of something borrowed, adding latter-day twists to this cocktail of clichés.

JC Hendricks has only been plying his trade for two years but he’s already building quite a resume. To put it bluntly, he ain’t exactly getting’ rich but he’s having fun trying.

The act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information; the ways of sending information to people by using technology.
It all started with a big bang! No, not the TV show -- the creation of our universe. Then came four-legged creatures, then two-legged creatures, and then Homo sapiens (man). And, as night follows day, next came ways to communicate: signing, grunts and language. As things evolved, new ways of communication took form. Stone carvings, print, sound transmission, etc., etc., etc. It seems each day new technologies are developed to “help” us to communicate information to each other. In the early days of the hospitality industry, word-of-mouth communication was the primary means for building a reputation and a business. People tried an establishment, they liked it and they told others. Some savvy tavern owners printed pamphlets and even created ads for local papers. Today, there are virtually endless ways to build awareness of a venue. As a consumer today, you now have a variety of new technologies available to you to communicate and gather information. (Thank you Apple, IBM, Samsung, etc.). While enjoying the comfort of your home or while driving down the road, you can access (handsfree) all the information you desire. In the media business, it is absolutely essential that we stay on top of the latest technologies that allow us to communicate timely and desired information to our readers and clients. Over the past nine years, we have worked diligently to stay abreast of the latest technologies that allow us to get our messages out to you. As a result, we have taken the necessary steps to ensure the steady flow of dining and entertainment information you seek. In addition to providing our monthly print edition, we have jumped into the social media arena with both feet. Now, through instant access and link capabilities, each complete issue of Venues NJ can be read through virtually all major social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, Google and Instagram, etc. using your computer, tablet, laptop or mobile phone. Our goal is to stay in touch with you and provide you with the dining and entertainment information you seek, how and when you want to seek it!
