This issue is a celebration of the little things – because it’s the small changes that can have the biggest impact on your home. From my proudly DIYed super-wide bifold door curtains (I stitched seven sale-bargain linen curtains together), to my unapologetically yellow living room walls and chalk-painted bedside tables, these things make me smile more than the spendy, functional stuff. If it’s the spendy, functional stuff you’re interested in, there’s plenty of that, too (check out our inspiring kitchen and bathroom makeovers, for example). But, if you’re in the market for some quick, fun projects to ring the changes, you’ll find a feast of ideas for your Pinterest boards. Don’t forget to share the results – you might make our wall of fame (p122)!

Create a GRAPHIC LIVING ROOM Design a postmodern marvel with bold shapes, vibrant colour splashes and playful accents

1. Pick pale wood pieces For occasional furniture or even a pendant light, wood such as light oak or plywood is the way to go. Not only is it a way to warm up the palette, but it also taps into the modernist trend that this look is inspired by.

2. Lay a graphicdesign rug Think simple arcs, big brush strokes or bold paint effects. There’s nothing subtle about this style, so when it comes to prints on cushions, rugs and art, the bigger the better!

12 | MARCH 2020

3. Add blackprint cushions Use black as the main colour, whether on the walls or in accessories. It adds to the graphic nature of this look, and also acts as a contrast to the vibrant, punchy colours like orange, cobalt blue and pink.

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Jade Hutton, 28, a make-up artist, and I live with my fiancé, Christian Watkins, 28, a building surveyor and carpenter, and Hector, our Italian greyhound. I have an interiors Instagram account @no14hectorshouse. OUR HOME A three-bed Edwardian end-of-terrace near Huddersfield, which we bought in August 2016. WHEN WE BOUGHT IT The layout needed a complete rethink, a new bathroom and kitchen were a must, and it required redecorating. AND NOW We’ve knocked down walls, added an extension at the back to give us a large kitchen and decorated throughout with a modern-country look. STYLE TIP Choose one neutral paint colour for the walls and use it throughout your home. It makes decorating so much easier and creates calming cohesion.

Friends and family all pitched in to help Jade and Chris turn their dated doer-upper into a cosy home that reflects their style

D

etermined to save up a decent deposit so I could buy my first home with my fiancé Chris, I was the last of my friends to leave home,’ says Jade. ‘Our family and friends are all local, so we knew we wanted to stay in the area, and because we are both fairly handy we were happy to wait for the perfect doer-upper to come along. Once we’d saved up enough, it took us four months to find this place. It was a bit of a wreck when we first saw it, but we could see straight away that it had potential. The decor was really old-fashioned, with floral carpets and brightly painted walls in every room, but there was lots of space, which for us was the most important thing. The ground floor was split into a series of small rooms and we were confident that we would be able to knock through to create an open-plan, light-filled living area, with a large kitchen at the back. There was also potential for adding an extra bedroom above the garage to give us even more space.

As soon as we got the keys we threw ourselves into the work and ended up taking the house back to the bare brick so that we could make sure everything – from rewiring to decorating – was done exactly how we wanted it. The existing wall separating the living areas was the first thing we tackled and getting it structurally correct was a big job. Then once the walls were all where we wanted them, we started to put the house back together. During the building work we discovered the gorgeous fireplaces in the living room, which were originally plastered up, and had little gas fires

‘Chris made the little house in the laundry room for our dog because he likes taking himself off to hide when the house gets a little busy with guests’

DIP-DYED POM-POM BASKET

1

Gather all your materials: a basket and water-based paint of your choice, newspaper, a plastic tub big enough to dip the basket into, glue gun, enough pom-pom trim to go around the basket, three large pom-poms. The Fladis basket, £13 from Ikea, is perfect for this project. Lay newspaper down to protect your surface and pour the paint into the plastic tub. Dip the basket into the paint up to your desired level. Gently shake off excess paint and hang the basket to dry, keeping the newspaper underneath to catch drips. Once the basket is completely dry, use the glue gun to attach the pom-pom trim around the level of the paint. Then, attach the three large pom-poms to the top of the basket, using glue.

Why it works

STYLE AT HOME SAYSÉ

‘TRADE YOUR SKILLS WITH FRIENDS AND RELATIVES WHO ARE GOOD AT DIY – IT WILL SAVE YOU LOADS’ in them. They just needed a bit of cleaning and repointing to make them usable. We filled one with logs and installed a wood burner in the other.

Upstairs/downstairs We installed a new staircase up to the attic so it could be used as a bedroom and turned an old box room into a large bathroom because we wanted to have enough room for a free-standing bath. The original bathroom became our

18 | MARCH 2020

en suite. Sash windows were fitted throughout the house, and as the windows are quite large at the front, we added plantation shutters to stop people looking in. The shutters give us privacy but mean the light still streams through. We moved in once the bulk of the work was done, after about three months.

Heart of the home The kitchen was the last room in the house that we finished and the one

HEART OF THE HOME

‘Save money with click-together flooring instead of real woodÕ

‘Another cost-saving trick was to buy our units in the sale from DIY Kitchens and the oak worktops from eBay, rather than purchasing an all-in-one kitchen’

‘When designing the layout, we made sure we had plenty of cupboard storage, so the open shelves are just to display my fun accessories’

that we most loved creating. The original space was U-shaped and tiny, plus the units were old-fashioned and weren’t really worth keeping. When we first saw the house we knew we would be able to extend into the garage, so we decided to knock it down with a view to creating a large, sociable kitchen space, a downstairs loo and a utility to hide away the less attractive white goods. Because we built on the existing footprint, it wasn’t classed as an extension so we didn’t need planning permission, which made things easier. And as we’ve got off-street parking, removing the garage didn’t feel like a huge loss. We sited the dining area in the rear of the living room, so we didn’t need space for a table in the kitchen and I’d always wanted an island, so we designed the room with this in mind. Originally, I’d wanted a stable door, but once we began the design we decided bifolds would work much better instead

TONGUE-ANDGROOVE PANELLING

1

First, decide what height you’d like the panelling to reach up the wall – halfway, three quarters or floor-to-ceiling. Panelling up to dado-rail height is often the most popular choice. Fix horizontal battens to the wall to nail your panels to. You’ll need three battens for dado-height panelling – one at floor level, one level with the top of the panelling and one mid way. Secure one panel at a time, using a spirit level to ensure it’s straight. For a neat finish, hammer nails in at an angle through the tongue into the batten behind, before adding your next panel. That will ensure all the nails are hidden in the grooves. Once all your panels are fitted, add a length of trim across the top edge to neaten it up. Finally, add a new length of skirting board across the bottom of the panelling.

2 3

SERENE SPACE

‘The spare room already had the roof window in place, but we had to add stairs to get up here. It was quite a difficult space to get right, but it’s a lovely room now so was worth the effort’

4

WAYS TO BRING ‘PICK ONE ACCENT COLOUR PER ROOM AND FIND SUBTLE IT IN – YOU COULD TRY A CLOCK, PIECE OF ART OR CUSHION’ and so we now have a lovely view out to the garden. The kitchen build itself happened fairly organically and once we took the garage ceiling down, we loved the airy roof space left behind, so instead of replacing it we kept the space open and installed wooden ceiling trusses.

A team effort

3D GALLERY WALL

‘Rather than a display of photo frames, I added another dimension with hanging objects’

22 | MARCH 2020

Although the initial building work was messy with long days and nights, the hard work of the build ran smoothly, helped by both our dads and my mum and sister, who got stuck in with painting and decorating. We are so lucky to have friends in the trades, too, which kept us on budget. Chris’s best friend is an electrician, another fitted the carpets, and another did the plumbing, so it feels like so many loved ones have helped renovate this house and Chris has returned the favours in kind with his carpentry skills.

and flicking through magazines before we started the work, so I had a good idea of the style we were going for. We both love oak features so it was a given that they would form the basis of the decoration; the main architectural element we fitted was the oak truss framework in the kitchen, which we complemented with oak windowsills, kitchen worktops and shelves, all made by Chris (which was a huge help on such a strict budget). Finding cost-effective options was also high on the agenda, so we always checked the price of things online before buying anything that we saw on the high street.

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Emma Bryans, 40, a primary school teacher, with a serious Instagram habit. I live here with my husband Tim, 41, an animator, and our three sons, Beau, 10, Sonny, seven, and Louie, three. MY HOME A four-bedroom 1930s house in the seaside town of Ballyholme in Bangor, Northern Ireland, bought in October 2014. WHEN I MOVED IN The kitchen extension had already been completed, but the decor was very dark and dated. It included a lot of red and dark green. AND NOW I have chosen a neutral backdrop in warm greys to best show off my ever-growing art collection. My gallery walls are a real talking point with friends and family. STYLE TIP Framed prints introduce brilliant pops of colour to any room and can be changed easily, so you’ll never get bored!

HOUSE TO FLOW!’ PERIOD PIECES

‘The 1930s doors and picture rails are elegant features I was keen to preserve. I painted the walls in Warm Pewter by Dulux’

By decorating the rooms with paintings, plants and pops of pink, Emma has added an abundance of colour to a neutral backdrop in her seaside home

T

im and I moved house for a bigger garden and to be closer to the sea,’ says Emma. ‘We had our hearts set on Ballyholme, as it’s a lovely area with a good school and many of our friends live here. We were previously living in a new-build, three-bed terrace, but we desperately wanted an older property with period features that we could put our own stamp on.

Introducing colour

The first thing I did when we moved in was to paint all the walls in the house light blue. I think I was a little bit overexcited about having moved to the seaside and wanted to reflect this in the decor! But unfortunately, such a pale shade meant the walls got grubby really quickly, and the blue made the house feel a little cold. I decided we needed to go for something a bit darker and warmer, so I set about finding some new shades that would better suit the house. I ended up choosing a spectrum of warm greys to use in every room, as these shades provide a great neutral backdrop for me to add pops of colour to. I wanted to give our home a cohesive feel with a sense of continuity throughout, and then bring plenty of interest with colourful accents from plants and fun additions like bunting and pom-poms. One day I started hanging colourful, framed prints and I’ve basically never stopped! My gallery walls now have a starring role on my Instagram feed @flawsomehome

Sticking to budget

We were lucky that all the improvements that we wanted to make to the

house were cosmetic and there was nothing major or structural that needed doing. The kitchen was a little dated, so we gave it a refresh with new cabinetry from Ikea for a quick and budget-friendly fix, and we gave the bathroom a facelift, too. We were on a very tight budget, so we decided to do most of the work ourselves to keep costs down. It was hard work, but that’s not something I regret; in fact I’m convinced that restricting yourself to stay within budget forces you to really do your homework and take your time to get things right.

Industrial approach I painted the kitchen walls in a mid/dark grey called Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball, to match the gunmetal grey cabinetry from Ikea. Then I added white subway tiles with a charcoal grout for an industrial look. A gorgeous patterned rug with lots of warm colour really helps to soften those darker elements I chose for the kitchen. I love the blackboard wall, too. It’s great for jotting down shopping lists and family reminders; the kids sometimes draw on it as well, which is fun. I’ve fitted a chunky scaffolding

Adding unique style

I’m a keen upcycler, and love to update junk shop finds, partly in a bid to save money, and partly to avoid the trap of buying everything from Ikea. Our last home was a new-build, filled with identikit furniture, and I felt this house would benefit from a different approach by including the occasional unique piece here and there. I realise that some of my favourite pieces are a bit eclectic, but I don’t think interior design should always be completely serious; I like to have fun! I’m inspired by interiors I see online and in magazines, and I'm not scared of changing things up every now and then, but I don’t follow trends; I like to have

‘Family photos are fixed with pegs to string, across a driftwood frame that Tim made’

Gather four pieces of wood, such as floor boards or pieces of a pallet. Give them a light sand to remove any splinters or rough edges, then paint, varnish or leave natural, depending on the finish you want. Once dry, arrange them in an open frame formation and secure with No More Nails or with long wood screws (screw from the back if you don’t want the head to show). Depending on the size and weight of your frame, attach one or two hangers to the back of the top piece of the frame. Work out how many rows of photos you can fit into your frame, allowing space above and below. Then measure the height of the frame and divide the rows, marking 1-2cm in from the frame edge, ensuring they are level on either side. Screw eyelets into the spot you have marked. Measure up your string or wire across the frame, and tie onto the eyelets. Arrange the photos across the string, using small pegs or washi tape to attach them.

Work out the highest point of the mural. Using a long straight edge, draw the first mountain shape in pencil. Once you are happy, arrange and draw out the mountain peaks either side of the tallest. Position thin decorator’s tape along the outline. Don’t forget to mask off any skirting to protect that from paint, too. Paint within the tape, using a contrasting colour. Repeat with a second coat if needed. Once fully dry, remove the tape that masks off the mountain peak. Then choose an alternative colour to paint the peak – you can do this free-hand with a fine brush, or mask off with tape and paint as before. When the paint is dry remove all the tape. Online inspiration Instagram is such a great community. It has really helped boost my confidence when it comes to my interior style, and I think it’s a good opportunity for self-expression. I don’t use it to show off my home, but as a way to meet and be inspired by other design lovers. A friend said to me recently that the braver you are with your decor, the braver you are with life, and I love that idea. It doesn’t mean your interior has to be bold and colourful – super pared down and minimal or pale and interesting are equally beautiful. The important thing is to take your own style as far as you can.

It’s important to me that my home feels welcoming to everyone, and for me, keeping it tidy is very much part of that.

Perfecting the look

For a couple of years I moved things around a lot, buying and upcycling junk shop finds and bargains that I’d found on eBay. I have calmed down now and I am happy to say things have fallen into place at last. My next project is to shift my focus to the garden and I reckon that will keep me going for a while – we are going to transform a large shed into a summerhouse. COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Kate Kozina, 35, co-founder of floral boutique Fine Stems London (finestems.co.uk). I live here with my husband Gregory, 36, and our daughters, Varvara, seven, and Stefania, five. OUR HOME A three-bedroom Victorian terraced house near Richmond, Greater London. We moved here in May 2016. WHEN WE MOVED IN The house offered a good amount of space and was perfectly liveable, but felt tired and dated in its decor. Plus, the layout wasn’t well-suited to modern family living. AND NOW We’ve created a spacious, open-plan layout. Redecorating each room has transformed the bland interior. STYLE TIP Use mood boards to visualise each room before decorating and to see how all of the elements will look together.

GAME CHANGER’ WINNING COMBO

Reconfiguring the downstairs of her Victorian home meant Kate was able to create a practical, open-plan space for her young family

aving focused our property search on this part of London for quite some time, we couldn’t believe our luck when this house near Richmond came on the market in one of our favourite streets,’ says Kate. ‘It’s down the road from a fantastic primary school, which was a top priority for us, and the house offered the space we needed for our growing family.

Modern makeover Structurally, the house didn’t need a lot of work at all and we could instead concentrate our time and budget on putting our stamp on the interior. The only major work we carried out was opening up the downstairs layout to create a more fluid and practical space that linked the living room, dining room and kitchen. We knew open-plan was best suited to our way of living, as we love to host friends and family, so having a link between the kitchen and dining areas was important to us.

IDEA TO STEAL

‘Bring back the house’s character with a mock fireplace’

I called on the expertise of interior designer Elena Creswell of Elena Creswell Design to help with the spatial planning of the new layout and to help us pull the whole look together. We decided to remove a loo on the ground floor, which previously jutted out awkwardly between the kitchen and dining area, and this allowed the downstairs to become one large space, instead of a disjointed series of rooms. Not only did this small change greatly improve the flow of the downstairs, which is perfect for our girls to run around in, but it also meant the space now benefits from lots more

Design decisions

Once the work was finished, I was able to start thinking about the interior decoration, pulling ideas together with detailed mood boards. I love Scandinavian design but also wanted to introduce a modern country-inspired look to make the property feel homely and cosy. The kitchen was the biggest challenge, as we had to work around the existing plumbing within a relatively small space, and design something that would flow into the open-plan area, too. Elena suggested dividing the kitchen into two separate zones, with one wall housing the cooker and fridge, and the other the sink and storage units. This made the best use of the space and created a practical

configuration for day-to-day living. For the kitchen cabinetry, we chose an Ikea design to keep costs down, then customised the cupboard and drawer fronts with new handles for a more luxurious, high-end feel.

Into the blue

I wanted to keep the cosiness of the house alive, as it had been this charm that we fell in love with when we first viewed the property. We experimented with different colours for the living and dining areas, but decided on a deep blue from Mylands to give the space a dramatic look. It now contrasts beautifully against the white kitchen, but keeps this part of the house cosy in winter when we want to curl up in front of the TV. Before redecorating, I felt the living area was lacking a focal point, so we

IDEA TO STEAL

‘The pendants make a beautiful feature and help light this middle part of the house on darker days’

‘Go for mismatched pendants for extra character’

Do it! GALLERY WALL ARRANGEMENTS A row of three is good for halls and landings or above a bed. This suits a series of pictures in identical frames. Try hanging from a peg rail or picture rail. For a grid like Kate’s, use identical frames and matching artwork, like black and white photography or a series of botanical prints. Plan it out by sticking paper templates to the wall with masking tape. To get the spacing right, aim for a 2cm gap both vertically and horizontally between each frame. Create a relaxed formation that can be added to over time. Start with a

rectangular frame in the centre and work outwards. This style is more forgiving for a mix of frames and pictures and is ideal for adding accents such as mirrors, clocks and wall decor. Go graphic with a stepped arrangement. Begin with a line of frames along the same horizontal line, using a sideboard, sofa or dining table as a guide. Build the display upwards. Sticking with a cohesive colour theme will create even more impact. If your right-angle lines are dead on, you can mix up frame sizes or orientations.

‘ALLOW THE DECOR TO REFLECT YOUR STYLE. OURS IS A MIX OF MODERN, TRADITIONAL AND SCANDI – ALL ROLLED INTO ONE’ decided to build a mock chimney breast and fireplace to centre the seating around. I then sourced an old Victorianstyle electric fire online and had it cleaned up and fixed – it’s now one of my favourite features in the house and it has definitely restored some of the original charm.

Savvy styling When it came to shopping for the open-plan space, it was important to choose pieces that would sit right proportionally and complement the different zones. I chose a mixture of contemporary furniture, such as the sleek copper coffee table in the living room, and more country-inspired pieces, such

as the dining table, to blend the old with the new and build up an interesting collection. The different styles help to balance the space and create a look that is both cosy and modern, which is what I was hoping to achieve. To tie the whole house together, I picked out a few design elements that we then included throughout the interior. Hexagons, for example, feature in the porch, kitchen and bathroom. We even managed to find some hexagonal pendant lights for the kitchen!

THE STYLE BOOK BATHROOM TRENDS

Turn your bathroom into your dream space with these inspirational schemes. From glam geometrics to relaxing spa style, there’s a look for you!

Pull out and keep!

the STYLE RULES GO FOR MODERN MONOCHROME White ceramic tiles with a gloss finish add depth behind the basin and shower. Go for matt black wall-mounted taps to mirror dark painted window recesses and doors. OPTIMISE SPACE Angular countertop basins offer a boutique hotel feel. If space allows, install two side-by-side to speed up getting ready in a busy household. Instead of a vanity unit

or pedestals, create bespoke storage with a chic marble countertop and simple plywood cupboards underneath. CHOOSE GLAM METALLICS Hang gold wall lights either side of sleek gold mirrors for symmetry above twin basins. SHOW OFF A STATEMENT FLOOR Lay small-scale mosaic tiles on the floor and add a contemporary twist with dark grout.

Maximise storage with wall mounted mirrored cabinets

Team a wooden vanity with a bench in the same finish and use as a shelf or seat when needed

Why it works the STYLE RULES BE PLAYFUL WITH COLOUR Paint one wall in fresh mint or duck egg bathroom paint for a splash of cheery colour. Alternatively, swap for gloss tiles in a similar shade. Contrast with blush pink or soft grey on the remaining walls. INVEST IN LITTLE LUXURIES Choose a white bathroom suite, including an indulgent roll-top bath and curvaceous countertop basins with chrome taps.

THINK ABOUT STORAGE When it comes to storage, mount a basin or two on a simple white floor-standing vanity featuring handy shelves or drawers. Paint a matching ladder rail for hanging towels within easy reach. ADD PERSONALITY Bring the look to life with colour pop towels in sunny yellow and turquoise. Paint a wooden stool in a co-ordinating shade.

Pick a range where you can mix and match units to fit your space, including wall-mounted and floor-standing options. ADD SUBTLE PATTERN WITH GEOMETRIC SHAPES Pick hexagonal wall tiles with a slight texture to contrast against

ENHANCE STRUCTURAL FEATURES Incorporate a walk-in shower enclosure into a sloping roof with frameless glass doors. Why it works the STYLE RULES MAKE IT LIGHT AND BRIGHT Paint walls in brilliant white to make even the smallest bathroom feel roomier. Team with red brick slips or wallpaper (suitable for bathrooms) to give the scheme a modern country vibe. UPDATE A FREESTANDING BATH Paint the sides of your bath in contemporary dark grey. Several coats of quality paint will help to make it a focal point in the room.

GIVE THE ILLUSION OF SPACE Go for an understated square wall-mounted basin to save on space and bounce light with a large vintage-style mirror above. BE CLEVER WITH STORAGE Slim wooden stools and ladder shelves make versatile storage for towels and accessories and can be moved wherever needed. Pop a bath caddy over the bath for showcasing favourite toiletries.

Double up with an overhead and handheld shower

the STYLE RULES PICK CALMING COLOURS Use a palette of warm shades to create a serene space the family will want to unwind in. Blush pink and soft grey is a soothing combo. GO FOR GLOSS Grey gloss bathroom furniture and cabinets have a sleek, contemporary look. For busy families, a vanity unit with several drawers is ideal for hiding away toiletries and cleaning kit.

ADD TEXTURE WITH TILES Complement grey furniture with stone effect brick tiles in a shower enclosure and larger scale floor tiles to add dimension. UTILISE WALL SPACE A heated towel rail is an extra luxury to ensure cosy and warm towels after a shower. Take advantage of space above the loo with floating shelves and add a corner cabinet for extra storage.

Why it works the STYLE RULES Stay on budget by using statement tiles in a small area such as a splashback or shower enclosure and pick lower cost designs for the rest. Alternatively, tile the wall halfway up and paint the other half

EMBRACE OPULENT SHADES Choose on-trend scallop-shaped tiles in deep teal or midnight blue to zone a shower enclosure. Try laying them horizontally for a unique design that makes a statement. SPOIL YOURSELF Marble tiles bring a luxury aesthetic to any bathroom. Keep costs down with marble-effect porcelain or ceramic designs and team with gold accessories for a glam hotel vibe.

GO FOR GEOMETRIC SHAPES Convert a dark wooden midcentury style cabinet into a vanity unit with round countertop basins to mirror the geometric shape of the tiles. A gold-framed circular mirror completes the look. RAMP UP THE GLAMOUR A roll-top bath is an elegant investment piece. Up the style stakes with luxe gold or brass taps for a stand-out tub.

the STYLE RULES CONTRAST A VARIETY OF MATERIALS AND TEXTURES Juxtapose industrial surfaces such as concrete, brick and untreated wood with lashings of greenery for an urban jungle ambience. ZONE A WALK-IN SHOWER Create a contemporary look with large format stone tiles and a black metal frame. Contrast with a rustic wood vanity unit and a smooth marble basin.

BRING AN URBAN FLAVOUR Hang faux brick-effect wallpaper that’s suitable for bathroom use. A vinyl or vinyl-coated wallpaper is best, but avoid direct contact with water. Lift the look with light wood-effect vinyl flooring. GO BIG ON GREENERY Introduce splashes of colour with tropical houseplants. Mix and match tall potted varieties with trailing types in macramé planters.

A walk-in wet room is ideal for en suites as it doesn’t create a divide in the room. Add a built-in alcove for tucking away toiletries

Why it works the STYLE RULES GO MAD FOR MOSAICS Round mosaic tiles in pretty blush are a modern way to add texture and interest to walls. If they’re a little on the pricey side, just use as a splashback. Finish with white grout for a fresh feel. CREATE A SEAMLESS LOOK Go for an on-trend walk-in wet room with a statement black frame enclosure and monochrome floor tiles to make the space look bigger.

COMBINE OLD AND NEW Simple black wall mounted taps and a shower head look smart and modern. Team with a large countertop basin on a reclaimed wooden bench for an industrial twist to this scheme. KITCHEN PLANNING

Do it

T

he more prepared you are at the start of a kitchen renovation, the more likely it is to succeed as a space that’s both practical and beautiful. From choosing a layout and including plenty of storage to selecting fixtures and fittings, careful planning will prevent costly mistakes further down the line. Getting the right layout for your space is key to getting your kitchen right. It may look fantastic but if it fails to function as a workspace, it’ll be a huge disappointment. If you’re using a kitchen designer they will be able to advise on a design that looks good and works perfectly. Before thinking about a design, it helps to have an idea of room formations. Every space is different but most suit one of five basic layouts…

1. Plan the layout Start with a scale plan of the space. Measure and include features such as windows, chimney breasts, doors and boilers. Cut out to-scale shapes of every fitting you’d like to include, and rearrange them until you find a layout that works. Alternatively, look online for free kitchen design apps. Incorporate plenty of space between the individual elements and consider how the room will work with more than one person in there at the same time.

Galley

L shaped

Usually a long, narrow room where units sit along one or both walls in a line AVOID WALL UNITS IN A NARROW SPACE to prevent the room feeling too cluttered. Go for open shelving instead. GO MODERN, using handleless units and fitting semi-or fully-integrated appliances. LAY YOUR FLOORING WIDTHWAYS – it will help to make the space appear wider. ARRANGE THE WORKING TRIANGLE so your hob and fridge aren’t opposite each other – that way people won’t end up back to back when cooking together. BANISH CLUTTER by investing in internal storage solutions such as multi-layer drawers, pull-out racks and pan dividers to keep things organised.

This layout offers lots of flexibility without feeling too enclosed KEEP AN OPEN FEEL by placing wall units along only one side of the room. ENSURE THERE’S PLENTY OF WORKSURFACE AREA on either side of the sink and the cooker, too, for the most efficient use of space. PLAN A PLACE TO EAT IF SPACE ALLOWS. A table or raised breakfast bar at the end of the longest run of units creates a spot for informal dining. UTILISE THE CORNERS with special pull-out kidney-shaped units or carousels. FIT TASK LIGHTING over the prep areas and supplement natural light from any windows with spots and downlighters.

‘PLANNING TO FIT THE KITCHEN YOURSELF? MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE CONDITION OF ALL FIXTURES AND FITTINGS ON DELIVERY’

U shaped

Island

Open plan

Allowing for units on three walls, this shape offers plenty of workspace USE TWO SIDES OF THE ROOM for your working triangle to keep it compact in a large space. Or, consider placing one element, such as the sink, on an island. ALLOW FOR LOTS OF WORKTOP between your cooker and sink if they are on the same run of units. At least 80cm is preferable. MAXIMISE YOUR STORAGE by adding clever solutions in both corner cupboards. GO FOR INFORMAL DINING in larger rooms by placing a peninsula at one end of a long run of cabinets.

Great for roomier designs, an island provides extra workspace while helping to create a tighter working triangle ALLOW ENOUGH SPACE around an island to open cabinets and dishwasher or oven doors. A workable minimum is 90cm, but 120cm is preferable. INSTALL A HARD-WORKING ISLAND. Consider a prep sink and possibly a dishwasher or wine fridge, too. Extra drawers for storing pots and pans are a good idea if your hob is on the island. THINK SAFETY FIRST and choose curved corners, which will do less harm to toddler heads and adult hips.

Great for kitchen-diners, this layout has plenty of room for dining and seating ZONE IT by separating the functional areas – for cooking, eating and relaxing – using different but cohesive materials and textures to create distinct spaces. INVEST IN QUIET APPLIANCES so you don’t end up trying to talk over a noisy extractor or washing machine. However, make sure your extractor is powerful enough to banish lingering cooking smells. HEAT THE SPACE EFFICIENTLY – a large room with a stone or porcelain tiled floor might be best suited to underfloor heating for an even spread of warmth.

MARCH 2020 | 87

COLOUR CLASH

2. Identify improvements Walk through your current kitchen and make a comprehensive list of what you love and, more importantly, the things you don’t, about your existing space. This will help you to focus on your priorities for the room, and concentrate on your must-haves and your don’t-wants.

Dilute block colour in a kitchen by separating bold shades with patterned tiles

WHAT IS THE WORKING TRIANGLE?

The working triangle dictates where the three key elements of hob, fridge freezer and sink sit in your kitchen and is an important consideration to reduce the distance you have to walk when cooking. You move between these three features all the time when preparing meals, so they need to be in a practical arrangement and within easy reach of each other. Ideally, the sides of the triangle created by these three points should be no more than 2.7m and no less than 1.2m long.

‘MAXIMISE LIGHT WHEREVER POSSIBLE – A LIGHT AND BRIGHT SPACE IN WHICH TO COOK IS SO INVITING’

3. Make the space work for you Think about how you live as a family and how you intend to use the space. For instance, do you cook from scratch and entertain guests a lot? Will the room be used for tasks other than cooking – homework, for example? Finally, think to the future to ensure you’re prepared for how your needs might change as your family grows.

RULE OF THREE

Create chic symmetry by echoing a row of three pendant shades over a breakfast bar with three bar stools beneath

KITCHEN PLANNING

4. Consider your storage needs Now’s the time to make sure you plan a place for everything. Measure your tallest mixers and biggest plates and take a good look at your kitchen appliances and accessories, thinking about what you want to place, and where. Arranging everything according to its function will mean you’re not having to walk too far around the room when cooking. Visit storage specialists Blum.com for tips on how to best organise your space.

Try using lighting fixtures to add an unexpected pop of colour to your kitchen

Do it

SPACE SAVER

Not only will benches save on valuable floor space in a kitchendiner, but you can also squeeze more people on to them!

5. Put safety first

FLUSH STASH. Narrow wall cabinets don’t take up too much room, yet will provide a small kitchen with plenty of storage space

SURVIVE THE WORK

Plan a way to cook and keep food and drinks chilled when your kitchen is out of action. Look into buying an inexpensive mini fridge for essentials like milk, while a microwave and kettle can be plugged in anywhere for paredback food prep while your kitchen is out of bounds. If a new floor is being fitted or the waste pipe is being relocated and you don’t have another one, it might be best to decamp to a friend’s house. Minimise the inevitable mess. Cover hallway floors with old sheets to protect them while products are being taken through the house. Ask for any cutting of tiles and plasterboard to be done outside to minimise dust, and seal off the doors to other rooms.

FEATURE TI-MEDIACONTENT.COM

Essential if you have small children in the house, the most efficient and safest layout will route traffic away from your oven and hob to ensure kids aren’t likely to get themselves under your feet and into danger when you’re moving hot pans around the room. Make the fridge accessible but don’t put it at the very heart of the room. Try placing it to one side, nearest the entrance to the room, so children can help themselves to drinks without venturing into the cooking space.

IDEA TO STEAL

ABOUT ME I’m Poppy Marples, 27, and I work in the education department of a theatre as a youth and outreach officer. I live with my partner, Dan Paige, 26, a surveyor, in a two-bed Victorian flat in Hove, West Sussex. We moved here in July 2018. THE CHALLENGE The kitchen was small and poky, and was housed in a tiny room off a large entrance hall. We decided to move the kitchen into the living room to create an open-plan space. MY WISH LIST A dark blue kitchen! Something sociable, stylish and in keeping with the rest of the flat. I also really wanted a butler sink and a nice big breakfast bar.

BETTER FOR US’ COLOUR BURST

‘I was set on this blue shade for the units – it adds vibrancy and style to the large room’

By moving her kitchen into the living room, Poppy was able to create a stylish, open-plan, multi-use space

H

aving enjoyed doing up our previous home, we were on the lookout for our next project when we found this Victorian one-bedroom, first-floor flat,’ says Poppy. ‘It was dated and unloved, but we relish a challenge and the flat was such a good price – we knew we could put our own stamp on it and make it work for us. Soon after we moved in, we decided to completely rework the layout. There was a bedroom, bathroom, small kitchen and massive living room, so to maximise the space, we turned the kitchen into a second bedroom and built a brand-new kitchen in the living room.

Choosing the kitchen We started by checking that it would be possible to move the gas and water connections from their existing locations into the living room. Once we’d had this confirmed, we worked with Howdens to come up with the perfect kitchen layout and design. I had lots of ideas and knew what I wanted, but I was careful to take my time, do my research and think about the space we had to work with. For example, ideally I wanted a sink under the window to enjoy the view, but it’s a huge sash window, which is too low for the worktop. So we compromised and adapted the layout. I’d set my heart on a dark blue kitchen and fell in love with the Shaker style of this Fairford design.

Watching the pennies As our budget wouldn’t stretch to marble or quartz worktops, we settled for solid rustic oak, which my partner Dan chose. We had it sanded, stained and oiled to better complement the blue units. We did most of the work on the rest of the flat ourselves, but decided to get a local carpenter in to fit the kitchen and

CHOOSE YOUR FLOORING Search for a material that works with your overall look – this could mean mirroring the worktop or creating a dramatic contrast. Always take a sample home and look at it in different lights. Set a budget and make sure it includes fitting costs, underlays, fixatives and grouts. Consider durability and maintenance. Porous stone and hardwood will need regular treating or resealing, whereas slate, ceramic, vinyl and laminate are all fairly low-maintenance. Use plain (often cheaper) tiles to create interesting patterns – lay them in a herringbone or brick formation, or try hexagonal tiles.

Theming the living area With the kitchen complete, I turned my attention to the rest of the living space. We found the old Victorian fireplace hidden behind a fake wall, which set the style for the rest of the room. We restored it and painted the mantel a grey shade for extra impact, and then painted the woodwork the same colour for a modern touch. Walls were painted a soft white to complement the blue kitchen units and, for a bit of fun, I decided to paint the

back of each door pink, to add a bit of personality to the room. We picked parquet flooring for the living area, which Dan fitted himself over three days, to help zone where the kitchen ends and the living area begins.

Styling it up For the finishing touches, I sourced accessories from lots of places. I found some bits second-hand on Facebook marketplace and others from small independent companies. Homesense and H&M Home are also favourites of mine. I introduced lots of houseplants, a few cool cushions and a shaggy rug to reflect my love of boho style. I love the new room and we’re both delighted that the gamble of moving the kitchen has paid off.’

WOODEN WORKTOPS

Poppy’s choice:

WOODEN WORKTOPS

They look charming but are they practical? Here’s the pros and cons…

Which variety of timber should I choose?

Hardwood – the most commonly available are oak, ash, walnut, cherry and maple, which all boast good stability and tightly knit grains. Iroko is also widely used in kitchens as it has a high level of natural oil, so is particularly suitable in wet areas.

Should I go for multistave or full-stave?

Wooden worktops are generally sold in multi-stave format, whereby small sections (staves) of solid wood are jointed together to provide extra strength

BEST FOR… VALUE BUYS

Wickes’ timber worktops start at £110 for a 3m length for Scandi-style light beech or oak. For a luxe look, go for the darker and thicker worktops in walnut and ash, from £560 for a 3m length.

GREAT CHOICE

Worktop Express supply an extensive range of timbers at competitive prices, including more unusual varieties such as iroko, wenge and zebrano. Try before you buy with its sample service.

BESPOKE OPTIONS

Bordercraft offers worktops in a choice of thicknesses from 30-80mm with every order made unique to specification. Details such as knife slots, contrast inlays and upstands are available.

and rigidity. Bigger staves allow you to appreciate more of the timber’s colour and grain. Smaller staves are usually cheaper, as they are made from offcuts. Full stave is when the sections of timber are jointed width-ways only and each stave runs the full length of the worktop. The most costly option is wide-plank with 8-12cm wide staves.

What about care?

Use Danish or Tung oil to oil the wood on all sides before installation. Then re-oil once a week for the first six weeks, then every three months. A well-oiled worktop will have a slight sheen and spilt water will ‘bead’ on the surface. When spills lie in flat puddles, it’s time to re-oil.

Will it stay looking nice?

RUSTIC-LOOK WORKTOPS

The great news is that any scratches or stains can be sanded out. Start with 100 grit sandpaper, building up to 150 grit – but no finer otherwise oil won’t penetrate properly. An inset sink, with built-in drainer, will also help protect the timber from direct contact with water and you should use a trivet for hot pans.

And to clean it?

Warm water and washing up liquid is perfect. Avoid any abrasive and chemicalfilled products and wire scouring pads as they can damage the surface.

COME ON IN!

ABOUT ME I’m Helen Brookes, an instagrammer (@40plusnot givingupyet), 44. I live with my husband Robin, a project manager, 45, our daughters Lola, 11 and Poppy, 10, and my nephew, George, 15, in a four-bed, detached 1950s house near Haywards Heath. We moved here in June 2014. THE CHALLENGE The bathroom was a great size but the layout wasn’t working hard enough. We wanted to add a walk-in shower and lots of organised storage. MY WISH LIST We’re all tall, so we wanted the biggest possible shower area as well as a large, freestanding bath. I love colour so it was really important to me that the room was bright and happy.

Helen used a stencil to create a colourful Mexicaninspired look for her new bathroom

A

fter exhausting both ourselves and our budget on a new kitchen as soon as we moved in, we had to live with the existing ugly mustard and pine bathroom for four years,’ says Helen. ‘It was a really good sized room, but all that was in there was a built-in bath, a pedestal basin and a loo. There was so much wasted space.

Planning the layout I was certain that we could create a much better layout that included a separate shower enclosure and a free-standing bath. Our bathroom looks out over fields, so one of our priorities was to have the bath under the window so we could make the most of the views. We managed to squeeze a loo onto the same wall by choosing a compact design, and luckily the shower and basin fitted together perfectly on the other side of the room. We wanted to maximise the size of the shower, while ensuring that we left enough space between all the elements, so we made scale drawings.

Shopping is my bag. I know a lot about high-street fashion, but it soon became apparent that shopping for bathrooms is a complete minefield, so I took advice from friends in the know and they recommended Roca, which is where I found this gorgeous bath. For the shower area, we went for a slim tray and two separate screens to make the largest walk-in enclosure that the space could handle. I found picking the floor one of the hardest decisions, but in the end I settled on a wood-look vinyl plank that clicks together to add some texture.

Creating the look When it comes to clothes I’m super confident, but the same isn’t true when it comes to my home, so this was my

first brave stab at introducing strong colour and pattern. I love Pinterest and Instagram, so I turned to them for inspiration. Mexican style is absolute perfection for me and I’m really inspired by Frida Kahlo, sugar skulls and Day of the Dead themes, so I went down this route for the bathroom scheme. It was so lovely to go for a strong look in here and deciding on the theme gave me a focus and made it fun.

IDEA TO STEAL

‘Coloured grout transforms white tiles into a style statementÕ

The perfect stencil My friend Kate, a stylist, gave me the encouragement I needed to be brave. I knew I wanted to introduce pattern in the bathroom using Mexican tiles, but I couldn’t find any in the colours that I liked. Kate suggested stencilling a tile-effect design on the wall instead, but I could only find Mexican-style stencils in America. A trawl of the internet led us to The Print, a company that produces bespoke stencils. We came up with some design ideas, which Kate then drew up to be turned into reusable stencils. The Print ended up liking our designs so much that it is now selling them on its site!

Splashes of colour Aside from the Mexican stencilling, I think the finishing touches are what has really made this room special. My sunny yellow radiator has proved a fun way of adding yet another pop of colour to the space and I love the round mirror, too. But, best of all is the pink shelf with all of its succulents and cacti – it just pulls the whole look together, completing the room.’

Prep the surface by cleaning and drying it thoroughly. Apply a tile paint and primer. Roller a thin layer diagonally across the tiles, using a brush to work the paint into the grout lines. Then finish with brushstrokes in a vertical direction. Allow to dry, adding a second coat if needed. Once completely dry, apply your stencil design. Secure your stencil to the tile with low-tack masking tape. Using a sponge, stippling paint brush or mini roller, apply a thin layer of paint. Once dry, you may need a second coat. Remove the stencil while the paint is still tacky, then allow to dry completely. Once all of your stencils have been painted, apply a coat of clear water-based sealant. For an alternative grout colour, use a grout tile pen, drawing a continuous line from bottom to top.

A FREE-STANDING BATH TUB Make the bath the focal point of your bathroom by choosing a standout style

How does free-standing differ from built-in? Built-in baths are fitted flush against the wall, with panels to hide the pipework, so are space-efficient. Free-standing baths are self-supporting, so can be positioned anywhere, and are great if you want to create a focal point. Plus, they come in a wider range of styles, shapes and sizes.

Have I got enough space? If your bathroom is small, compact free-standing tubs are available (measuring

less than the standard 170cm length) and some designs are straight-edged, so they can be fitted against a wall or in a corner.

What style is best? Contemporary baths tend to sit flush to the floor and many feature sleek oval-shaped designs. They can be single-ended (with taps at one end, so great for smaller bathrooms); double-ended (built for two with taps in the centre, best in bigger bathrooms); or slipper baths (sloped at one or both ends for a deeper soak). Most modern baths are made using twin-skinned acrylic which stays warmer for longer. Classic roll-tops are ideal in a more traditional setting. Usually twin-skinned acrylic or cast iron, they are raised off the floor on feet or can be elevated on a plinth. Roll-tops also come in single and double-ended versions or deeper slipper and bateau bath styles.

And tap options? This depends on where the bath is positioned and how much space you have. Floor-standing taps that stand free of the bath complement a statement tub, though installation may require flooring to be lifted. Deck-mounted taps need a bath with pre-drilled holes; wall-mounted spouts are also an option if the bath is close to a wall.

SPRING PLANTER

Create a colourful spring bulb display with help from Dobbies’ houseplant buyer, Claire Bishop

Various potted bulbs, from £2.99; potted Narcissus Tête-à-tête bulbs, £2.99 for 1ltr, all Dobbies

U

sing pre-loved dainty teacups, milk jugs and bowls as planters for small spring blooms is a great way to give them a new lease of life. What’s more, they’re a quick and easy Mother’s Day gift that’ll bring joy as the flowers bloom. YOU WILL NEED

1

START WITH A CLEAN CONTAINER Once you have chosen your planter, the first step is to give it a good clean inside and out with warm soapy water, as this will reduce the chance of infection by pests and diseases. Make sure you rinse and dry it thoroughly. PREPARE FOR DRAINAGE Add gravel to the teacup to help with drainage. Unless you decide to drill a small hole in the base, you’ll just need to be careful not to overwater. Fill with compost. ENCOURAGE GROWTH Before placing the plant in the container, loosen the roots as this will encourage them to grow when you (or your mum) come to repot them. They just need to be gently teased by the fingertips to avoid any damage to the plant. CHOOSE A SELECTION OF BULBS Finally, plant up with Tête-à-tête daffodil and hyacinth bulbs in different shades and top the vintage planters with a layer of moss. For a personalised touch, you could tie a luggage tag to the handle with a note for the recipient. GET A HELPING HAND Dobbies also provides a free container planting service meaning you can simply choose your plants and take your teacups (old or new) to one of its experts, leaving with a ready-made gift for Mum.
