ebruary - the month of the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Numerous bars in Verbier will no doubt be showing events on their television screens with one of the main highlights being the Alpine skiing. Earlier in the winter, Verbier Life was fortunate enough to meet up with local Swiss Olympic and World Cup skier Justin Murisier. In between World Cup races I was able to sit down and chat to him about his season so far and aims for the winter ahead. I have to admit, I didn’t really know a lot about Alpine racing before we chatted, but coming away I’m now a new member of the Justin Murisier Fan Club (find them on Facebook) and will certainly be cheering him on when he takes part in the Giant Slalom and Super Combined events this month. Read our article on page 32. Valentine’s Day is another February event, perhaps a load of commercial rubbish, but nevertheless a day that can remind ‘singletons’ that they are on their own. Inga Verbeeck set up an exclusive introduction agency, which she runs from her offices around Europe and here in Verbier when she is here over the winter months. Read the interview with Verbier’s matchmaker on page 42. Also in this February edition, after record-breaking snow falls, Tom Crothall from Mountain Air writes about all the gear we need to stay as safe as possible when venturing off-piste. Carl Renvall writes his winter diary and Eileen Gent makes some delicious breakfast muffins. évrier, c'est le mois des Jeux Olympiques d'hiver à Pyeongchang, en Corée du Sud ! De nombreux bars de Verbier vont sans doute retransmettre l’évènement sur leurs écrans, dont l'un des moments forts sera le ski alpin. Plus tôt cet hiver, Verbier Life a eu la chance de rencontrer le skieur suisse local Justin Murisier, qui a déjà participé à la Coupe du monde et aux JO. Entre deux courses de Coupe du monde, j'ai eu l'occasion de m'asseoir et bavarder avec lui à propos de son début de saison et de ses objectifs pour la suite. Je dois avouer que je ne connaissais pas grand chose sur le ski alpin avant notre conversation, mais me voilà à présent membre du fan club de Justin Murisier (trouvez la page sur Facebook), prête à l'encourager lors des épreuves du slalom géant et du super combiné ce mois-ci. Lisez notre article à la page 32. La Saint-Valentin, autre manifestation de février qui n'est probablement qu'une vaste foutaise commerciale, permet néanmoins de rappeler aux célibataires qu'ils sont seuls. Inga Verbeeck a créé une agence de rencontre exclusive, qu'elle dirige depuis ses bureaux autour de l'Europe et ici à Verbier lorsqu'elle vient durant les mois d'hiver. BRUSON FREERIDE AND YETI PARTY

• La 8e édition de la Bruson Freeride revient le 24 février prochain. La grande nouveauté de cette année : l'évènement intègre le FWQ en tant que compétition 3 étoiles ! Il réunira pas moins de 120 riders de toute l'Europe, qui s'affronteront en descendant les faces du Six-Blanc et de la Pointe de Sésal. Ils seront jugés sous l’œil attentif d’un jury pro formé lors des dernières éditions par Géraldine Fasnacht, Xavier de Le Rue, Émilien Badoux ou encore Yann Rausis. Comme d'habitude, la manifestation se poursuivra avec la Yeti Party à la salle de spectacle Saint-Marc au Châble à partir de 17h : remise des prix officielle, stands des sponsors et concerts jusqu’au bout de la nuit. JUSTIN MURISIER Justin Murisier, le skier de Coupe du monde FIS, est de retour plus fort que jamais cette saison. Cet hiver, il représentera aussi la Suisse aux Jeux olympiques d'hiver en Corée du Sud. Verbier Life a réussi à le retrouver entre deux courses pour discuter de cette saison à venir... FIS World Cup Justin Murisier, is back stronger than ever this season. This winter he is also representing Switzerland at the Winter Olympics in South Korea. Verbier Life managed to track him down in between races to chat about the winter ahead…

e plan initial était de rencontrer Justin au Mouton Noir, mais j'ai reçu un SMS me disant qu’il était retenu au Colorado à cause du mauvais temps après une des premières courses de la saison où il avait terminé à une impressionnante 5e place à Beaver Creek. Nous avons convenu d’un nouveau rendez-vous au Châble, mais il faudrait faire vite car il partait directement pour Alta Badia, à peine rentré de Val d’Isère. L’agenda d’hiver de Justin est incroyablement chargé, entre les déplacements pour les compétitions et tout ce qui se passe entre les courses. Dès que Justin a passé le pas de la porte du Café de la Place, les clients ont commencé à lui serrer la main, le saluer, tout en lui souhaitant le meilleur pour la saison à venir. Originaire de Prarreyer, il vit aujourd’hui à Bruson, où sa grand-mère avait un restaurant sur les pistes. Sa passion est venue en regardant son frère aîné commencer à faire des courses avec le club de ski local ; il voulait aussi y participer, mais il était trop jeune. Dès qu’il a eu l’âge, il a chaussé ses skis de compétition et n'a plus jamais fait marche arrière. L’engagement est énorme. « C'est un investissement, plus de temps pour les amis, c’est un engagement total dans la nutrition et l’entraînement. C'est une vie différente jusqu’à l’âge de 35 ans, puis ça changera après ma carrière », explique Justin. Cela veut dire pas de fromage ni de vin pour ce bagnard dévoué. « Je mange peut-être une fondue par an, juste après la fin de la saison, et je peux aussi boire quelques bières. Je ne bois pas d’alcool pendant l’hiver, seulement à la fin de la saison. » Il enchaîne ensuite directement avec les entraînements d’été, quasiment sans jour de congé. Comme dans tous les sports, des accidents et des blessures peuvent arriver aussi aux plus dévoués. En 2011, Justin s'est déchiré les ligaments croisés, il a donc manqué la saison 2012, puis la malchance l’a frappé une deuxième fois avec une nouvelle blessure des ligaments croisés, ce qui l'a fait manquer la saison 2013. Il s'est qualifié pour les Jeux olympiques de Sochi en 2014, mais ne se sentait pas prêt. « Je n’ai pas vraiment réussi aux derniers Jeux olympiques car j’étais encore en train de récupérer de mes blessures aux ligaments. C’était une belle expérience, même si je n’étais pas prêt à courir, à voir comment fonctionne cet événement. Maintenant, j’en suis à ma troisième saison depuis ma blessure. Je suis revenu de nulle part et suis désormais dans le top 15, et j’ai terminé de nombreuses fois dans le top 10. À présent, je souhaite faire des podiums, dit Justin en riant. J’ai du bon matériel, de bons skis et je skie bien, j’espère donc faire de bons résultats. » Je me demande s’il « s’économise » pour les Jeux olympiques ? « Les Jeux olympiques sont vraiment très importants, mais en ski alpin, la Coupe du monde est aussi très importante. Dans de nombreux sports, le but ultime est de gagner une médaille d’or olympique, mais nos contrats et nos sponsors sont basés sur la Coupe du monde. Ce serait bien sûr génial de remporter une médaille olympique, mais ce n’est pas le principal objectif. » Après un changement au sein de la direction, le sponsor principal de Justin, Ochsner Sport, a mis fin à leur partenariat. Des soutiens locaux se sont mis en place, Verbier et Comina Architecture devenant sponsors principaux pour plusieurs courses (le Mouton Noir a pris un rôle de soutien). Justin a aussi de nombreux supporters locaux ; il a même son propre fan club avec plus de 300 membres qui organise des voyages pour assister à bon nombre de ses courses. « Parfois, si la course a lieu pas trop loin, plusieurs bus remplis de supporters viennent me soutenir depuis chez moi, ce qui est génial. Si la course a lieu en Amérique, alors il se peut qu’une seul personne fasse le déplacement, dit-il en riant. Les gens aiment soutenir le ski alpin, en particulier lorsque qu’un coureur de la région skie. La région possède une fière histoire de grands coureurs comme Roland Colombin, Philippe Roux et William Besse. » En tant qu’ambassadeur de Verbier, Justin a-t-il concrètement le temps de skier à Verbier, et si oui, où aime-t-il skier ? « Une descente des Attelas aux Ruinettes sans personne le matin, c’est super pour faire de beaux et grands virages... » Il neige à gros flocons pendant que nous discutons ; apprécie-t-il aussi le ski en poudreuse ? « Quand je peux, bien sûr, si j’ai le temps quand les conditions sont bonnes. Nous n'avons pas beaucoup d’opportunités. En tant que coureurs, nous passons beaucoup de temps à rechercher des pistes gelées. » Peu de gens recherchent des pistes gelées. Avec le freeride, il y a un danger potentiel d'avalanches et des risques de chutes dans des barres rocheuses, ce qui peut provoquer une certaine peur chez les coureurs. Je demande à Justin

he original plan was to meet Justin up at Le Mouton Noir, but I received a text—he was delayed in Colorado due to bad weather after one of the first races of the season where he was rewarded with an impressive fifth place at Beaver Creek. We rescheduled to meet up in Le Châble, but it would have to be quick—he was heading straight off to Alta Badia, having just returned from Val d’Isère. Justin’s winter schedule is incredibly busy, travelling to races and everything that goes along with that in between. As soon as Justin walked into the Café de la Place, people were shaking his hand, saying hello, wishing him all the best for the season ahead. Originally from Prarreyer, he now lives in Bruson, where his grandmother had a restaurant up on the slope. His passion first came watching his older brother start racing with the local ski club—he wanted to join in too, but was too young. As soon as he was old enough he clicked into his racing skis and has never looked back. The commitment is huge. “It’s an investment, no time for friends, it’s a total commitment to diet and training. It’s a different life up to the age of 35, then it will change after my career,” explains Justin. This means no cheese or wine for this dedicated Bagnard. “I maybe have fondue once a year just after the season, then I can drink some beer too. I don’t drink alcohol during winter, just at the end of the season.” Then it’s straight into a summer of training, rarely taking a day off. Like any sport, accidents and injury can occur to the most dedicated person. In 2011 Justin tore his ACL so he missed the 2012 season, then bad luck struck a second time with another ACL injury, which led him to miss the 2013 season. He made it to the Sochi Olympics in 2014, but didn’t feel ready. “I didn’t do so well in the last Olympics as I was recovering from an ACL injury. It was a nice experience, even though I wasn’t ready to compete, to see how the event works and everything. Now it’s the third season since my injury. I came back from nowhere and now I’m in the top 15 and I’ve had a lot of top 10 positions. Now I want some podiums,” smiles Justin. “I have good material, good skis and I’m skiing well, so I’m hoping for some good results.” I wonder if he’s ‘saving himself’ for the Olympics? “The Olympics are really, really important, but in Alpine skiing the World Cup is also very important. In a lot of sports the ultimate goal is to win an Olympic medal, our contracts and sponsorships are based on the World Cup. Of course to get an Olympic medal it would be incredible, but it’s not the main focus.” After a management change, Justin’s main sponsor Ochsner Sport ended their partnership. Local support stepped in with Verbier and Comina Architecture becoming main sponsors for several races (with Le Mouton Noir taking on a supportive role). Justin has strong local support too, he even has his own fan club with over 300 members which arranges trips to many of his races. “Sometimes, if the race isn’t too far away, there are a couple of buses from home full of people to support me—which is great. If the race is in America, it might only be one person,” he laughs. “People love to support Alpine skiing, especially when someone local is skiing. The area has a proud history of great racers like Roland Colombin, Philippe Roux and William Besse.” As a Verbier ambassador does he actually have time to ski in Verbier, and if so, where does Justin like to ski? “An empty Attelas to Ruinettes in the morning, is great for nice big turns…” As we chat it’s snowing heavily outside—does he also enjoy skiing the powder? “When I can, for sure, if I have the time when the conditions are good. We don’t have many chances. As racers, we spend a lot of time searching for icy slopes.” Not many people search for icy slopes. With freeriding, there is the potential danger of avalanches and steep falls over cliffs which can obviously produce some fear for competitors. I ask Justin about ‘fear’ in Alpine skiing. “We never talk about fear in downhill, we talk about adrenaline. When you are at the starting gate in Kitzbühel and you know it’s really icy, no one will say they have fear—but there will be adrenaline. Big adrenaline,” he laughs. After talking with Justin it’s clear to see his determination for results this winter, I ask what his goal is. “It’s difficult to say—I’d like to be in the top 7 by the end of the season, for the Giant Slalom and have some podium

de parler de la « peur » en ski alpin. « Nous ne parlons jamais de peur en descente, nous parlons d’adrénaline. Lorsque vous vous trouvez dans le portillon de départ à Kitzbühel et que vous savez que c’est très gelé, personne ne dit qu’il a peur, mais il y aura de l’adrénaline. Une grosse adrénaline », dit-il en riant. Après ma discussion avec Justin, sa détermination à obtenir des résultats cet hiver est évidente ; je lui demande quel est son but. « C'est difficile à dire ; j'aimerais être dans le top 7 à la fin de la saison en slalom géant et terminer quelques fois sur le podium. J’aimerais aussi bien sûr obtenir une médaille olympique. Je pense que j’ai une bonne chance d’y parvenir en super combiné et aussi en slalom géant. »

ith a record-breaking snowfall in Verbier at the beginning of the season, Swiss Mountain Guide Hans Solmssen, explains what effect this will have on snow conditions for the rest of the season. “In my 35 years guiding here in Verbier, I have never seen so much snow, so early in the season. This translates into a stable snowpack for the rest of the winter. All the snow was followed by some temperature fluctuations, and even some rain—which is disappointing, but enables the inner snow layers to bond together, acting like glue which creates a solid winter snow pack.”

Ceci se traduit par un manteau neigeux stable pour le reste de l’hiver. Toute cette neige a été suivie de fluctuations de températures et même de pluie, ce qui est décevant mais permet aux couches internes du manteau neigeux de se consolider entre elles, telle de la colle qui crée un manteau neigeux hivernal solide.

There is a great deal of choice on the market, so what are the things you should look for when making the choice about where best to spend your money? The first thing to consider is the quality of the product. In the most basic form, this comes down to how much you value the life of your friend? Is it worth spending a little extra to get the equipment that will make it the easiest to find and recover your pal in an emergency situation.

On trouve un grand choix de matériel sur le marché, quels sont donc les critères à prendre en compte lorsque vous décidez de dépenser votre argent ? La première chose à prendre en compte est la qualité du produit. Dans sa forme la plus basique, cela revient à vous demander quelle valeur vous accordez à la vie de votre ami ? Vaut-il la peine de dépenser un peu plus pour acquérir du matériel qui vous permettra de trouver et dégager plus facilement votre ami en situation d’urgence.

Second is the weight and size of the gear. If you are racing then maybe it is worth investing in carbon, but generally speaking, if you go for something small and light like a shovel and probe set, then it will not be as robust when you really need it. In my very humble opinion, it is worth carrying a few extra grams to make sure that you have a really solid set-up. Speed is the next factor to consider, the chance of survival reduces dramatically after 15 minutes. In real terms, this means that you are most likely going to be on your own when it comes to recovering your ski buddy, as it can take rescuers more than 15 minutes to find you and get on the ground. So, if you have an antiquated transceiver or a flimsy probe and a tiny shovel, you are making the job much harder for yourself.

Le deuxième critère est le poids et la taille du matériel. Si vous faites de la compétition, il vaut peut-être la peine d’investir dans du carbone, mais en règle générale, si vous privilégiez ce qui est petit et léger par exemple pour une pelle et une sonde, le matériel risque de ne pas être assez robuste quand vous en aurez vraiment besoin. À mon humble avis, il vaut mieux porter quelques grammes supplémentaires pour être sûr que vous avez du matériel vraiment solide. Transceiver - A transceiver is the piece of equipment that sends a signal that can be located by your companion or the professionals. They all work on the same frequency so there is no problem with buying one that will not be compatible. What varies is the functionality and accuracy of the unit. Probe – Size, weight, length and material all matter in the world of probes! Once you have located the victim with your transceiver you need to make sure that you know exactly where they are so that you can dig efficiently. You work in a spiral shape starting in the middle and working out until you hit something that feels like a person. Then you leave the probe there and use it as a reference to guide you down to the victim. If the probe is not long enough or too weak to push through the snow, which has set like concrete once it stops moving, then you will spend a long time digging in the wrong place, increasing the chance of a bad outcome. Shovel – The same logic can be applied here as with the probes. A shovel that is too small or light will take you longer to dig out your buddy. Most modern shovels that are not super light have an extendable handle to make it easier to use. In my opinion, you should avoid plastic shovels as aluminium or carbon are lighter and stronger. You might also need to use the shovel as an anchor in some situations so the stronger the better.

Pelle – On peut appliquer ici la même logique que pour les sondes. Une pelle trop petite ou trop légère vous fera perdre du temps lorsque vous essaierez de sortir votre partenaire. La plupart des pelles modernes qui ne sont pas super légères ont un manche extensible qui les rend plus faciles à utiliser. À mon avis, vous devriez éviter les pelles en plastique, l’aluminium et le carbone sont plus légers et plus solides. La pelle peut aussi vous servir d’ancrage dans certaines situations, elle doit donc être la plus solide possible.

Airbag – As I mentioned earlier an airbag is not essential but various studies have shown that an inflated airbag will save half the victims who are caught in an avalanche. The theory is called “inverse segregation” and in simple terms means that larger particles rise to the top of an avalanche, the secondary benefit is that the inflated bag will prevent trauma by cushioning impacts. There are a variety of systems on the market, the two main brands here in Europe are ABS and Mammut, with others like Ortovox and BCA catching up. These work on a pressurised air system being released when the wearer pulls a toggle.

Airbag – Comme déjà mentionné plus haut, un airbag n’est pas indispensable mais diverses études ont démontré qu’un airbag gonflé sauve la vie de la moitié des personnes prises dans une avalanche. La théorie s’appelle « ségrégation inverse » ; en termes simples, cela signifie que les grandes particules sont poussées vers la surface de l’avalanche, et l’avantage secondaire est que le sac gonflé peut protéger des traumatismes en amortissant les impacts. You can have everything, a brilliant career, fabulous friends, a beautiful home, no financial worries, but for some reason, never have met that ‘other half’ to share it with. Having someone special to share a great view with, or a night on the sofa with a bottle of red, can be the added ‘seasoning’ to daily life. However, the wrong partnership can also have the opposite, detrimental effect. In an era of dating apps, swiping left or right, trying to meet someone can be a daunting experience. After strings of disastrous dates, it’s easy to give up and make do with life on your own. We invest in help in so many areas of life, why leave one of the most important aspects to chance, or even worse, Tinder? After marrying early at 21, Inga found herself a divorcée at the young age of 29. A friend persuaded her to try a dating agency, an experience that personally didn’t work for her. She did however, fall in love with the idea of creating an agency with the aspects she felt were missing from the market. After a career as a journalist, followed by 13 years in the family steel industry, Inga made the bold move to set up Ivy Relations. With offices in Geneva, Paris, London, Monaco, Antwerp and a multi-million euro annual turnover – it seems to have been the right move. And most of all, Inga has immense job satisfaction watching people have their dreams fulfilled. Inga is now happily partnered up, enjoying life, spending time at the company’s headquarters in Belgium and visiting her second home in Verbier as often as possible.

VL: How did you end up falling in love with life in Verbier? Inga: My parents got a place in Verbier in 1984 which rather defined my 42

childhood as we’d spend almost every holiday – summer and winter – as well as free weekends in Verbier skiing, hiking, mountain biking and skating. I fell in love with Verbier and its active lifestyle as a young girl, and haven’t yet fallen out of love with it! That makes it the longest love-affair of my life I’d say!

Je suis tombée amoureuse de Verbier et de son style de vie actif lorsque j'étais jeune fille, et cet amour ne m'a jamais quittée ! On peut dire que cela en fait ma plus longue histoire d'amour ! VL : Combien de couples as-tu formés au fil des années ? Inga : Des centaines ! Qui plus est, j'estime que nous avons, chez Ivy, un « modus operandi » qui procure aux clients des avantages à plus d'un titre. En effet, nous sommes à la fois les confidents, les mentors et les challengers de nos membres. Nous voyons nos clients améliorer leur vie personnelle sur différents plans avec nous, ce qui est très gratifiant et stimulant pour nous. VL : Existe-t-il une jeune génération de bébés Ivy Relations grâce à vous ? Inga : Oui en effet, à notre plus grand bonheur ! De manière générale cependant, faire appel à un entremetteur pour soi reste aujourd'hui incroyablement tabou. Nous avons formé tout un tas de couples qui ne diront jamais, même à leurs proches, qu'ils se sont rencontrés grâce à nous. C'est très étrange que l'utilisation des applications de rencontre en ligne soit devenue totalement acceptable socialement, alors que notre service de rencontre personnalisé et haut de gamme ne l'est pas du tout. Nous nous efforçons de briser ce tabou pour les années à venir ! VL : Quels sont les plus grands défis du métier d'entremetteur ? Inga : La franchise. VL: How many successful partnerships have you made over the years? Inga: Hundreds! More over, I believe at Ivy we have a ‘modus operandi’ offering clients value in more ways than one. Over the span of a Membership we are our client’s confidants, mentors and challengers. We see our clients improving their personal lives on various levels while with us, which is clearly very rewarding and inspiring . VL: Is there a second generation of mini Ivy Relations babies out there, thanks to you? Inga: Oh yes indeed that is happily the case! On a general note though, there is still such an incredible taboo about engaging a matchmaker’s support for one’s personal life. We’ve made a bunch of couples that will never share – even with their inner circle – that they’ve met through us. It is incredibly strange that the online dating app thing has become entirely socially acceptable, yet our elevated and personalized version of dating support isn’t at all. We strive to break that taboo over the next years! VL: What are the biggest challenges when matchmaking? Inga: Straightforwardness. Clients often don’t dare to be sufficiently truthful about the elements they look for in a partner, and are attracted to. Too often is takes a lot of time for us to dig deep enough to really understand a client and 43

Combining that with figuring out what a client really needs is quite the task and awareness process. But what would life be without challenges! The idea of buying love. It needs to be clear that (true) love is a two-way street!

VL : D'où viennent la plupart de vos clients ? Inga : La Suisse représente un important marché pour nous, de même que l'Europe occidentale de manière générale. Nous sommes principalement actifs sur le continent européen, ainsi qu'aux États-Unis et au Moyen-Orient. Nous sommes présents et proposons nos services dans le monde entier ; après, tout dépend des attentes et des critères particuliers de chaque client. Si l'un d'eux souhaite rencontrer quelqu'un dans un rayon de 2 km autour de son petit village natal, nous ne serons pas le bon investissement. Mais si vous recherchez quelqu'un avec qui partager une vie trépidante, dans un esprit plus sophistiqué, nous vous réserverons de merveilleuses surprises !

We charge substantial fees because of the time and investments we make to build a strong client base, network and customer service platform. You cannot however buy love. We can provide and enable suitable, exciting opportunities but chemistry is out of our hands, and so is the actual date! VL: Where are most of your clients from? Inga: Switzerland is an important market for us, as is Western Europe in general. We are mainly active in continental Europe, as well as the States and the Middle-East. We offer a global presence and service, yet everything depends on the individual client’s expectations and criteria. If one would be hoping to meet someone in a 2km radius from their little home village we wouldn’t be the right investment. If you’re looking for someone to share an exciting life with, and can think a bit worldlier we’ll deliver wonderful surprises for you! VL: How do you vet potential candidates, what criteria do they need to fulfill to join Ivy Relations? Inga: Vetting is key for a sustainable and qualitative service, in more ways than one. Vetting a client starts with an exploratory phone call, and is followed with an in-depth, in-person meeting where we aim to forge a solid view on the person. We will then require the client to fill in some questionnaires, at which time we will also run a background check with our security partner. Integrity is key in acceptance as a client, as well as authenticity and having realistic expectations. As our service is an exclusive and tailor-made one, financial independence is a basic requirement. VL: Where do you see the company in 5 years and how does Verbier fit into those plans? Inga: We see our company grow further both in global foothold and number of clients. We aim to further develop innovative programs to help our clients achieve their personal goals, whichever they may be. Whilst digital solutions are superb for a many great things, I do believe they have negatively impacted social behavior in society. Divorce rates are higher than ever, male suicides are higher than ever and loneliness is a detrimental factor for many. Verbier for me has always been a place where it’s easy to connect with people, whether for friendship, business, love or simply accompaniment on active ventures. I’d say Verbier people – whether resident or frequent visitor – share a true love for the mountains, for an active lifestyle and the beauty of nature (perhaps combined with a healthy appetite for some post-sunset fun!) which provides for an organic and unique little community. Cela commence par un appel téléphonique préliminaire, suivi par une rencontre approfondie en personne dont le but est de nous forger un bon avis sur la personne. Le client est ensuite amené à remplir quelques questionnaires ; nous en profitons alors pour mener une enquête avec notre partenaire de sécurité. Pour qu'un client soit admis, l'intégrité est cruciale, de même que l'authenticité et des attentes réalistes. Étant donné que notre service est à la fois sélect et sur mesure, l'autonomie financière est une condition essentielle. VL : Comment vois-tu l'entreprise évoluer dans les cinq années à venir ? Et comment la station de Verbier s'inscrit-elle dans ces projets ? Inga : Notre entreprise devrait voir s'agrandir à la fois sa présence mondiale et le nombre de ses clients. Notre objectif est de perfectionner nos programmes innovants afin d'aider nos clients à atteindre leurs buts personnels, quels qu'ils soient. Bien que les solutions numériques soient excellentes pour tout un tas de choses, je suis convaincue qu'elles ont eu un impact négatif sur les comportements sociaux. Les taux de divorce n'ont jamais été aussi élevés, de même que les taux de suicide chez les hommes, et beaucoup souffrent de solitude. Pour moi, Verbier a toujours été un endroit où il est facile de créer des liens avec les gens, que ce soit sur le plan amical, professionnel, amoureux, ou simplement pour partager des activités de loisir. Je dirais que les gens de Verbier, qu'ils soient résidents ou visiteurs réguliers, partagent un véritable amour pour la montagne, pour un style de vie actif et pour la beauté de la nature (peut-être allié à un solide appétit pour quelques folies post-crépuscule !), créant ainsi une petite communauté à la fois naturelle et unique. Assez symbolique de ce que nous faisons au quotidien ! Je suis sûre que l'agence Ivy se servira de cela et sera activement présente à Verbier dans un proche avenir !

Nous avons demandé à certains membres du personnel des Elfes de nous dire ce qui les a attirés à Verbier et comment s'est passée leur saison jusque-là... We asked some of the staff at Les Elfes why they came to Verbier and how their season has been so far…

« J'ai choisi de venir à Verbier cette saison car, ayant déjà visité la ville auparavant, j'ai trouvé l'ambiance incroyable et ai toujours voulu revenir. Le domaine skiable est extraordinaire, surtout l'accès aux pistes non damées. J'ai vraiment adoré chaque seconde de ma saison jusqu'à présent ! Tous les gens que j'ai rencontrés à Verbier sont tellement sympas. Je reviendrai pour d'autres saisons, c'est certain. » “I chose to come to Verbier this season because having visited the town before, I found the atmosphere amazing and wanted to come back. The skiing here is incredible, especially the access to itinerary runs. I have absolutely loved every second of my season so far! Everyone I have met in Verbier has been so nice. Journal d'hiver Ayant à la base skié ensemble dans les FWT Juniors & Qualifiers, Carl Renvall et le photographe Alex Moorhead ont depuis passé plusieurs années ensemble en montagne. Les heures passées à skier ensemble ont créé de nombreuses opportunités de photos au fil des années. Ce mois-ci, Carl interroge Alex au sujet de son activité de photographe de freeski… Initially skiing together in the FWT Juiniors and Qualifiers, Carl Renvall and Photographer Alex Moorhead have spent many years on the mountain together. Hours skiing together have created numerous photo oppotunities over the years. This month, Carl asks Alex about his freeskiing photography… Texte: Carl Renvall Photos: Alex Moorhead Qu’est-ce qui t'attire dans la photographie de freeski ? Le plus gratifiant pour moi dans ce processus, c'est lorsque je peux transformer une photo en cadeau. Qu’il s'agisse d’un tirage papier, d’un partage sur internet ou juste de mettre quelqu’un en valeur et le lui montrer. La photo de freeski demande beaucoup de travail, surtout lorsque vous ne savez pas bien ce que vous faites, mais c'est vraiment gratifiant une fois que vous obtenez le produit fini. Ça part aussi d’une envie de capturer et de montrer certaines des choses incroyables que je vois mes amis faire régulièrement à ski.

Carl: What appeals to you with freeski photography ? Alex: The most rewarding part of the process is, for me, when I get to turn a picture into a gift. Whether it’s a physical print, sharing it on the web or just making someone look awesome and showing them that. Freeski photography is actually a lot of work, especially if you don’t know what you’re doing, but when you get that finished product, it’s really gratifying. Part of it is also a desire to capture and display some of the rad things that I see my friends do on skis on a regular basis. Carl: What are the ingredients to a good picture ?

Quels sont les ingrédients d’une photo réussie ? On peut dire des millions de choses sur ce qui fait une bonne photo, mais l’essentiel est d'avoir un sujet intéressant. Ce qui est délicat en photo de ski est le fait que vous avez un sujet qui est survolté et qui bouge rapidement, et vous devez essayer de le faire se conformer à l’idée que vous vous faites du résultat final. En quoi la relation skieur / photographe est-elle importante ? La communication entre les deux est vraiment essentielle, car pour obtenir une bonne photo, il faut que le skieur comprenne la vision du photographe et vice-versa. C'est également bien d’être avec quelqu’un en qui vous avez confiance lorsque vous vous trouvez en terrain potentiellement dangereux.

Alex: There’s a million things that can be said about what makes a good picture, but the essential is having an interesting subject. The tricky thing with ski photography is that you have a highly stoked, fast-moving subject and you need to get them to conform in some way to your idea of what the picture should look like. Carl: Why is the skier-to-photographer relationship important? Alex: The communication between the two is really important because for a good picture to happen, the skier has to understand what the photographer envisions and vice versa. Also, when you are out in potentially dangerous terrain, its good to be with someone you can trust.

La saison des carnavals Jack Shaw d’Epic Europe évoque quelques traditions carnavalesques du Valais... Jack Shaw, from Epic Europe, writes about some of the Valais carnival traditions...

arnival season throughout the world is a time when the first rays of spring shine, and people look forward to shaking off the winter blues. And it is typically a time to cut loose - often very loose. In Verbier and the Val de Bagnes, all-night fancy-dress parties and parades of Güggen bands in garish costumes are the norm, but throughout the rest of the Valais, there are some darker traditions that are worth exploring. Not to mention a great excuse to discover a nearby ski area for a day and take in some of the local culture.

artout dans le monde, la saison des carnavals coïncide avec les premiers rayons du printemps, une période où les gens n'ont qu'une hâte : se défaire du blues de l'hiver pour de bon. Et c'est généralement l'occasion de se lâcher, souvent totalement. À Verbier et dans le val de Bagnes, les grandes soirées costumées et les défilés de fanfares (guggenmusik) en déguisements tape-à-l'œil sont la règle, mais dans le reste du Valais, il existe d'autres traditions plus obscures qui méritent d'être explorées. Sans compter que c'est une excellente excuse pour découvrir le domaine skiable de la région et s'imprégner de la culture locale, le temps d'une journée.

In the Lötschental, a high hidden valley that sits to the north of the Rhône above Gampel at the start of the Lötschberg Tunnel, bachelors have donned terrifying wooden masks with wild manes of goat hide for centuries, and spend the week between Candlemas and Ash Wednesday frightening the inhabitants of the valley. Origins of the tradition are vague, but it has been going on for nearly 700 years or more - some believe to scare off the evil spirits that caused devastating avalanches, while others think that they were disguises for neighbouring villagers to raid the winter stores of better-off towns, even stealing food, wine, and more.

Dans le Lötschental, une haute vallée cachée sur les hauteurs de Gampel, au nord de la vallée du Rhône et à l'entrée du tunnel du Lötschberg, voilà des siècles que les hommes célibataires se couvrent de peaux et fourrures d'animaux ainsi que de masques de bois terrifiants, et passent la semaine de la chandeleur au mercredi des Cendres à effrayer les habitants de la vallée. Bien que ses origines soient peu claires, cette tradition remonte à près de 700 ans. Certains croient qu'elle avait pour but de faire fuir les esprits maléfiques causant jadis des avalanches dévastatrices, tandis que pour d'autres, c'était les habitants des villages voisins qui se déguisaient pour attaquer les réserves hivernales des villes mieux nanties, volant alors nourriture, vin, et plus encore.

Nowadays, the week leading up to Mardi Gras is characterised by small bands of Tschäggättä who roam the streets, scaring children, chasing young girls, and rubbing snow or soot in men’s faces. It culminates with a parade of over 150 of these creatures on February 8 between the villages of Ferden and Blatten. Better yet, get in a half-day of skiing at Lauchernalp for big views of this incredible valley and its patriarch peak, the Bietschhorn before joining the party.

Aujourd'hui, durant la semaine précédant Mardi gras, de petits groupes de Tschäggättä ont l'habitude d'errer dans les rues, effrayant les enfants, pourchassant les jeunes filles, et essayant de frotter les visages des hommes de leurs gants passés dans la neige ou les cendres. Le clou de la manifestation est un défilé de plus de 150 créatures le 8 février entre les villages de Ferden et Blatten. Mieux encore, profitez d'une demi-journée de ski à Lauchernalp, avec des vues imprenables sur cette merveilleuse vallée et son sommet patriarcal, le Bietschhorn, avant de rejoindre les festivités.

Closer to home, Evolène in the Val d’Hérens has another pagan tradition, of the straw men, or Les Empaillées and les Péluches, or stuffed animals. Tracing back to the Celtic inhabitants from the bronze age, they dressed in these costumes also to ward off the evil avalanche- causing spirits, and to end the winter. In all of these traditions, it is a way of having the world return to chaos before it can be reborn again in the form of the seasonal changes of spring. Seeing these Empaillées in person, one wonders how they can stand wearing burlap grain sacks with 50+ kilos of hay stuffed inside, for an entire day or more. Now the younger children wear the animal masks and the bachelors wear the Straw men costumes - while not as scary as their counterparts in Lötschental, they can be disturbing!

Plus proche de Verbier, Evolène dans le val d'Hérens affiche une autre tradition païenne, celle des Empaillés et des Peluches. Elle remonte aux celtes de l'âge de bronze, qui s'affublaient aussi de ces costumes pour repousser les mauvais esprits causant des avalanches, et mettre fin à l'hiver. Dans toutes ces traditions, il s'agit d'un retour au chaos avant la renaissance, symbolisée par les changements saisonniers du printemps. En voyant ces Empaillés en personne, on se demande comment ils peuvent supporter d'être vêtus de sacs de jute de plus de 50 kilos remplis de paille, pendant toute une journée voire des fois plus. Aujourd'hui, les jeunes enfants portent les masques d'animaux tandis que les hommes célibataires revêtent les déguisements des Empaillés, et, bien que moins effrayants que ceux de leurs homologues du Lötschental, ils peuvent néanmoins choquer !

Ski across the 4 Vallées to Thyon, and catch a bus to Evolène on Sunday the 11th of February for the full procession of Empaillées and Peluches, with a full festival atmosphere along the main street. Then make your way back to Verbier, or keep the party rolling and catch a train via Sion/Martigny/Le Châble.

Traversez les 4 Vallées à ski jusqu'à Thyon, puis prenez le car à Evolène le dimanche 11 février pour assister au défilé des Empaillés et des Peluches, dans une grande ambiance de fête tout au long de la rue principale. Puis rentrez à Verbier, ou prolongez les festivités et prenez le train en passant par Sion, Martigny et Le Châble.

Carnival in Verbier normally involves dressing up and heading out for one of the biggest nights of the season. Check with each bar/nighclub to find out their chosen theme. Guggen music and events will take place from February 10 to 13, check with the Tourist Office to see what will be happening this year. Whatever you do this Carnaval season, let your hair down and get a little wild before your own rebirth of the new season, and year.

Lors du carnaval de Verbier, les gens se déguisent et sortent pour l'une des plus grosses soirées de la saison. Rapprochez-vous des différents bars et boîtes de nuit pour connaître leur thème. Venez assister aux évènements et voir les fanfares (guggenmusik) du 10 au 13 février ; le programme complet est disponible à l’office de tourisme. Les petits déjeuners à emporter sont de plus en plus la norme ces jours, mais rien ne nous empêche de continuer à privilégier le fait maison. Il suffit d’un peu d’organisation et vous pourrez partir de chez vous avec un de ces délicieux muffins à la main, et ainsi commencer votre journée du bon pied. Je vous propose deux variétés mais n’ayez pas peur de créer votre propre muffin spécial du matin en partant de cette recette de base. Veillez à utiliser du yoghourt nature épais et riche en protéines ; vous en trouverez des fabuleux dans les laiteries de la région.

'Grab & Go' breakfasts are becoming more and more the norm these days, but there is nothing stopping us from still having it homemade. It only takes a little planning, but you can walk out your door quickly with one of these delicious muffins in hand and start your day on the right foot. I've given two varieties, but feel free to create your own special breakfast muffin from this base recipe. Be sure to use a thick, high protein plain yogurt. There are some available from the local laiteries that are simply fabulous.

Délicieux muffins de petit déjeuner au yoghourt

Scrummy Yogurt Breakfast Muffins

70 g de beurre fondu

70g butter, melted

100 g de sucre blanc ou sucre de canne fin, de préférence bio

100g white or fine cane sugar, preferably bio

180 g de yoghourt nature, de préférence de la région

180g plain yogurt, locally sourced if possible

1 gros œuf

1 large egg

7 g de levure

7g baking powder

Makes 12 Muffins

Pour préparer 12 muffins

1/4 c. à c. de bicarbonate de soude

1/4 tsp baking soda

1/4 c. à c. de sel

1/4 tsp salt

1 c. à c. de vanille

1 tsp vanilla

195 g de farine de ménage

195g plain flour

Pour faire des muffins aux myrtilles, ajouter :

1/2 c. à c. de zeste de citron finement râpé, de préférence bio

½ tsp finely grated zest of lemon, preferably bio

255 g de myrtilles fraîches ou surgelées (pas besoin de les décongeler)

255g blueberries, fresh or frozen (no need to defrost)

3 c. à s. de sucre brun brut à gros cristaux

3 tbsp raw coarse brown sugar

Pour faire des muffins au citron et pavot, ajouter :

Le zeste finement râpé de 2 citrons, de préférence bio

Finely grated zest of 2 lemons, preferably bio

Le jus d’un citron

Juice of 1 lemon

3 c. à s. de graines de pavot

3 tbsp poppy seeds

1 œuf supplémentaire

1 extra egg Heat oven to 180°C. Line a muffin tin with 12 paper liners or spray each cup with a nonstick spray. Melt butter in the bottom of a large bowl and whisk in sugar, zest, yogurt and egg(s) until smooth. Whisk in the baking powder, baking soda and salt until fully combined, then lightly fold in flour and berries (if using) or poppy seeds and lemon juice. This batter is quite thick but easy to portion out. Divide evenly between prepared muffin cups and sprinkle each with 1 tsp raw coarse sugar (for blueberry variety). Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the tops are golden and a tester inserted into the centre of the muffins comes out clean. Let them cool in the pan for 10 minutes then remove and finish cooling on a baking rack. These are best eaten fresh but will keep for 1-2 days at room temperature. Alternatively, they can be frozen and stored in a bag in your freezer, so that you can defrost one the night before or grab one each morning, gently reheated & ready to go.

Chauffer le four à 180 °C. Disposer 12 morceaux de papier sulfurisé sur un moule à muffin ou vaporiser chaque moule individuel avec de l’huile. Faire fondre le beurre au fond d’un grand bol et incorporer, à l’aide d’un fouet, le sucre, le zeste, le yoghourt, l’œuf (ou les œufs) jusqu’à ce la pâte soit homogène. Toujours avec le fouet, ajouter la levure, le bicarbonate de soude et le sel jusqu’à homogénéité, puis incorporer délicatement la farine et les myrtilles (le cas échéant) ou les graines de pavot et le jus de citron. Cette pâte est bien épaisse mais facile à diviser en portions. Répartir de manière égale dans les moules à muffin et saupoudrer chaque moule avec une c. à c. de sucre brut en cristaux (pour la variété aux myrtilles). Cuire pendant 25 à 30 minutes, jusqu’à ce que les muffins soient dorés et qu’un cure-dent inséré au cœur ressorte propre. Laisser refroidir dans le moule pendant 10 minutes, puis retirer et finir de refroidir sur une grille. Ces muffins sont meilleurs frais mais peuvent se conserver 1–2 jours à température ambiante. Ils peuvent également être congelés et conservés dans un sac au congélateur ; vous pouvez ainsi en décongeler un la veille ou en prendre un le matin, le réchauffer délicatement puis partir. www.verbierlife.com

La taille ne compte pas ... surtout en ce qui concerne le vin ; la provenance, par contre, est essentielle. Size does not matter… especially when it comes to wine; provenance however is everything. Text: Marcus Bratter

o who is the heaviest hitter in the wine boxing ring? Well, just across the border from Geneva, and a short two-and-a-half-hour drive from there and you’re in Beaune - the heartland of Burgundy. Drive twenty minutes north of Beaune and you will reach Romanée-Conti. This is a tiny estate, only 1.8 hectares, but it produces up to 6,000 bottles of the most expensive wine in the world. Bottles from this postage stamp-sized area have been known to sell for CHF 60,000 each. But relax, if you’re in the mood to spend, you’re in luck, you can pick up a bottle from Macbirch for an economic CHF 12,000.

Mais pas de stress, si vous vous sentez l'envie de dépenser, vous avez de la chance, vous pouvez acheter une bouteille chez Macbirch pour la modique somme de CHF 12’000.

So what is it that makes the well-heeled amateur reach for his or her wallet, or more accurately - American Express Black Card? It’s not just the Pinot Noir grape, not just the smiling face of the winemaker or grape grower, although he or she counts for a lot, what also counts, is the ground in which the vines are grown and the weather, together known as “terroir”. In the case of Romanée-Conti, 60cm of brown limestone soil, clement weather and skilled hands seem to make all the difference.

Ce n'est pas seulement le cépage Pinot Noir, ni le sourire du producteur du vin ou du vigneron qui s’occupe de faire pousser les vignes, même si il ou elle joue un rôle important, ce qui compte aussi, c'est le sol dans lequel pousse le raisin et le climat, appelés ensemble le « terroir ». Dans le cas de Romanée-Conti, 60cm de sol calcaire brun, un climat clément et des mains habiles semblent faire toute la différence.

If you are lucky enough to be able to spend a lot on a bottle and you don’t like red there are many other options: Germany’s Egon Müller-Scharzhof Riesling can be had for a cool € 7,000 or a Domaine Leflaive’s Montrachet Grand Cru, Côte de Beaune for a mere € 5,000, per bottle!

I could continue with a list of superlative wines from the world over: Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, USA to mention just one more. But let’s not forget Bordeaux; a bottle of Petrus will set you back over € 4,000 for a good vintage from the 90s, or, if you have a sweet tooth, a Château Yquem will cost you a little less than € 2,000.
