FRESH IDEAS FOR WEDDING FLOWERS By Carmen George, Wedding Officiant

As a wedding florist, one of my greatest joys is walking around my flower beds picking flowers and creating big beautiful bouquets. Some couples want something different. Therefore, I have a broad selection of other materials that can meet their vision. Alternatives to fresh cut flowers may appeal to you if you have allergies, want the bouquet as a keepsake, are looking to express a bigger concept than fresh flowers will allow, are doing something athletic as part of their wedding, or want something less traditional. Whatever the reason, here are some ideas worth talking to your wedding florist about.
{HOPS AND HEMP} Using a plant that isn’t traditionally used at weddings and that has some connection to your life, like hops, can be fun. While officiating a wedding at All Souls Interfaith Center, I noticed the groom’s boutonniere was created using hops.The bouquet was constructed of a mix of greenery including hops, no flowers. These millennial obviously enjoyed Vermont’s microbrew culture and felt it fit in nicely with their celebration.
No one has asked me to incorporate hemp into a design yet, although I do know a registered hemp farmer. It sounds like Vermont is getting closer to legalizing cannabis. If this happens, don’t be surprised if it starts to appear at weddings.
{FRUIT AND FLOWER BUDS} For an elopement I officiated at Shelburne Farms, the brides requested a non-girly bouquet and boutonniere. The bride who wanted the bouquet was pregnant. I designed her bouquet with peonies and other flowers in their bud state and fruits that were forming. This included a red pear starting to grow, cherries with a hint of red, currants, honey berries, and sweet smelling peach blossoms. Placed in water after the ceremony, this bouquet continued to ripen and become more brightly colored and the blossoms opened. It was a perfect fit for a spring sunset wedding. {LEAVES AND HERBS} During the spring and fall, leaves of some plants are as colorful as flower petals. They lack fragrance so when I am designing one of these, I mix in at least one aromatic herb such
wedded bliss as rosemary, oregano, mint, dill or lemon balm. If you are someone who wants to reduce your carbon footprint, using local vegetation and flowers is smart way to incorporate your values on your wedding day.
{WOOD AND DRIED GREENERY} If you want a rustic and natural feel in their wedding decorations. Nature offers an endless selection of elements that can be dried or reshaped. Wilderness lovers are venturing beyond the familiar materials such as wild flowers and slices of wood and incorporating others elements such as wood shaped into flowers, dried seed pods, and pine cones. These can be teamed up with feathers, deer antlers, nests and driftwood. After the wedding they can be brought home as remembrance of the day. A touch of scent lavender or rose oil can be added to provide a nice scent. At a recent wedding at Hotel Vermont, the couple asked me to design terrariums for the cocktail hour. I created a larger terrarium for the bar and three smaller terrariums for high top tables. I designed each with unique touches, adding acorns and unusual stones that I found during a walk in the woods. All contained live moss, spider plants, ferns and a
variety of interesting succulents. The guests loved them! {SILK AND LATEX} Top quality and realistic silk and latex flowers can be as expensive as fresh cut flowers. However, you can now rent these types of bouquets. This option makes grand bouquets affordable. Silk and latex flowers are a more durable. if you are is planning to ski down or hike up a mountain with your bouquet, you have something that will still have all its petals intact when you reach your destination.
{PAPER} Paper can be cut and shaped into some terrific flowers and leaves. It can be made with paper that has a love poem, sheet music, your vows, religious text or an image on it that means something to the two of you. As centerpieces they make fantastic conversation starters for your wedding guests. Whatever you decided to do, most of the ideas can be created by your wedding florist. inter in Vermont provides the perfect neutral backdrop to create an ethereal and elegant wedding design featuring the colors of your choice. It is a great season for layering antique details and vintage fabrics. The pure white snow and gray and beige landscape make bright greens and pinks come to life. ooking at stylized, inspiration photos in wedding magazines can be a wonderful source of ideas to a couple planning a wedding. However, sometimes there can be a bit of sticker shock when you take these images to your wedding planner or floral designer and they tell you how much it is going to cost. With that dilemma in mind, L'Estelle Photography teamed up with some other wedding professionals to create a different type of inspiration photo shoot—one that shows the same look, but with two variations representing two different budgets. By making some adjustments to the choices you make for things such as your gown, cake, or table decor, you can find ways to achieve the same look without breaking your wedding budget.

The Gown
Look 1: Crepe Dress Suggestive empire line mermaid wedding dress with a bateau neckline. A perfect combination of crepe, tulle, and lace floral motifs. There is a glimpse of a suggestive sweetheart neckline at the front. Look 2: Beaded Dress An elegant mermaid wedding dress in tulle with embroidery, georgette and gemstones. It features stunning floral details. V-open back with a sweep train.
Bouquet
Look 1: This bouquet used a budget-friendly base of white hydrangeas and standard roses, provide a lot of bulk at a lower price. Using hydrangeas can be the most economical way to get a large bouquet at a lower-end price. Look 2: This bridal bouquet is a mix of some very highend flowers and greens—garden roses, ranunculus, anemones, orchids, and dusty miller.
