The Romance...
Heather’s best friends from high school went to college with Nick’s best friends from high school. This mutual friend group threw a New Year’s Eve party on Martha’s Vineyard and both Nick and Heather were invited. Though they didn’t share a New Year’s kiss during this first meeting, conversations by the cozy fire certainly helped set the couple on the right path.

The proposal...
Nick invited Heather out to a friend’s cabin in Roxbury, Vermont. Way off the grid and situated next to a small pond with a wood burning sauna, the cabin served as a rustic retreat away from busy work schedules. The couple were in the middle of alternating rounds of hot sauna and cold dips in the pond when Nick asked if Heather would like to sit by the shore with him for a while. “It’s 41 degrees and raining, why do you want to sit outside?” she asked. After some convincing, he managed to get her outside for the big ask. Heather said yes, and that night Nick surprised her with a stay at the Pitcher Inn. That day was their seventh anniversary. Why Vermont...
So many of our loved ones were traveling from out of state and we wanted to share the magic of where we live. Twenty minutes from our home, Basin Harbor’s setting with views of the Adirondacks over Lake Champlain highlights our favorite aspects of recreation and the natural beauty that Vermont offers.
The Venue...
Both of us grew up going to summer camp, so Basin Harbor felt like a great place to have a long weekend filled with activities for our family and friends. Hiking, running, a “Wedding Triathlon”, yoga on the dock and big family meals. 32 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

We made our wedding rings (in a workshop called With These Rings run by a metalsmith, Stephanie Selle) in Port Townsend, Washington. We did the shaping and soldering (there is a panel of the other person’s metal in each ring where the sun is engraved) and had them engraved with the profiles of Camel’s Hump and Mount Washington on one side and waves (signifying Lake Michigan where Heather grew up) on the other. Our friends run Shacksbury Cider and surprised us with sparkling cider made from Basin Harbor apples for our toasts. We made the beeswax luminaries on our centerpieces with our friends at Bee the Change, a non-profit committed to repurposing the unused space in solar fields to support our threatened pollinators. We also designed our own fabric with creemees and Basin Harbor adirondack chairs; once we had the fabric printed, Heather’s mother sewed bow ties and neckties for the groomsmen and groom. 34 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
We love to create things and celebrate our community (near and far) over delicious food and drink. Our top priorities were food, location and music. We loved seeing our friends and families in the splendor of Basin Harbor’s dock and dancing away after a delicious dinner.

Wedding Advice...
A friend told us to each list our top three priorities and work from there on how to make each person’s number one possible and then consider the rest of the priorities and compromise given our budget. Luckily, our numbers one and two lined up and we felt really excited to focus there. The list was a great reminder when so many different choices were presented and a lot of them were appealing--it served as something concrete to return to that we could remind ourselves of the main goals for the event. Many brides are taking classic styles and putting a fresh modern twist on them to claim them as their own. Here are three women whose style shined on their wedding day.

Katherine and Alexander chose a historic place for their wedding ceremony—Waterworks Food & Drink, nestled in the Champlain Mill in Winooski, Vermont (see their ad on page 45)—a pre-World War I industrial architecture building that sits on the banks of the rambling Winooski River. workers handling wool. Recently these interiors received a 21st Century update. Its furniture and fixtures are contemporary and comfortable, yet harmonize with the historical setting. When you enter you have a sense of place. You can feel it's roots to the people that built this city. It is the same experience many people have when they host their wedding in a Vermont barn. Our bride Katherine arrived at the venue looking glamorous. Her look was a fresh take on the 1940s. Her hair was a softened version of Actress Lauren Bacall’s wavy hair style. Katherine’s v-neck dress flowed down in pleats to her calfs. Her bold red lips framed her gorgeous smile and mascara accentuated her beautiful blue eyes. The rest of her makeup was soft natural tones on the cheeks and eyes. The flowers for the wedding, food, and other elements were locally sourced, emphasizing the values of this modern plant biologist scientist bride. The merging of vintage and modern made this wedding stand out and feel refreshingly unpretentious yet stylish. The lounge area in the heart of the restaurant allowed guests to relax, socialize and laugh with the couple. Isn't that the best part of weddings?!

The Romance...
Chris and I met in Boone, North Carolina. I moved there for college and Chris moved there for a new adventure and to find a "southern belle." The joke is on him, however, because although I am from the south, I am no "southern belle!" Our paths finally crossed when we were both working at a local restaurant downtown called Cafe Portofino. and he says I was wearing a white tee with my hair in a braid, sticking out like a sore thumb since everyone else was dressed in black. I anxiously awaited when he would speak to me for the first time. I would go out of my way to polish wine glasses, just so I could sneak glances at him while he worked. He waited two weeks because, in his own words, he was "building up the courage." The first thing he ever asked me was if I wanted a jolly rancher. Our life has been pretty sweet ever since!

The Proposal...
Chris proposed to me during a beach vacation to the Outer Banks in South Carolina for his cousin’s graduation. His entire family was there, and it was at the same beach that my family would take me every summer growing up. One evening before we went out to dinner, Chris asked if I wanted to walk on the beach. It was a beautiful sunset, and during our walk Chris pointed to something by the dunes, and I saw that in huge letters there were sea shells that spelled out, “Marry Me?” His family had secretly helped set up the shells during the day, so I wouldn’t notice. His mom was filming from the dock and got the whole thing on video!

Why Vermont...
We are technically not a destination wedding, but we moved to Vermont less than a year before our wedding. Chris grew up here and he had always wanted to bring me back to start our lives after college. We were engaged for three years, but I wanted to wait until we moved to Vermont because it is such a magical, amazing place to get married. Lake Champlain took my breath away the first time I saw it, and for years I had envisioned getting married with a view of the lake. Also, Vermont has so many great local businesses, I knew it would be easier for us to find great wedding vendors (which we did). 52 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

The Venue...
I knew that we wanted a space with a great view, either of the lake or the mountains, and we wanted something that included a lot of extra benefits. We went to dozens of different venues, some great but too way pricy, before we finally found Champlain Room and Terrace. I was hesitant at first because I didn’t like the idea of getting married at a school, but this place was too great to pass up. It included an outdoor ceremony space with a tent and an amazing view of the lake, a reception room with tables and linens and lights and a dance floor, in house catering and bar service, and even a day-of wedding coordinator. The entire staff there went above and beyond to make our day amazing. The location was also perfect, my guests loved being right in the middle of downtown Burlington! 54 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

Our favorite part was honestly the ceremony. When we said our vows, it felt like there was no else there but us, and I will always remember the look in his eyes. Chris says his favorite part was everything, but mostly getting to celebrate our love with all our family and friends. Another of my favorite parts was taking pictures by the lake—it was such a beautiful day and we had so much fun taking pictures and laughing together. And of course, dancing. So much dancing. Wedding Advice...
Hire a planner if you can! Wedding planning should not have to be one of the most stressful things you ever do, so if you can afford it, I recommend hiring a planner! But if you can’t afford it, just as I couldn’t, I recommend getting all the help from friends and family you can, and don’t stress about the small things—you don’t even notice a lot of the details you spent time worrying about on the day of your wedding! And the best part is, you’re with all the people you love, and those small things just don’t matter!

To find your perfect lipstick color, you want to stay close to your natural lip color but go a shade or two darker.
To help your lip color last longer, take a lip liner (same color as lip shade or a shade darker) outline your lips and then color in, covering your lips fully. Apply your lip shade preferably with a lip brush.
To keep your lipstick on your lips and not on your glass, discretely lick the out side of your glass where your lips are going to be before sipping.

We went to high school together and had mutual friends. After college we all went to Vermont for a long weekend snowboarding, where Drew fell in love, and Kelly had no idea. WINTER WONDERLAND!! We both love the mountains and snowboarding in Vermont, Kelly is obsessed with Christmas and winter! Drew instantly fell in love with a photo he saw on Pinterest of a tweed suite with a buffalo plaid tie, so we incorporated the red from the buffalo plaid into the winter wonderland theme.
Fav Moments...
The most special moment was waking up together on our wedding day (we know not very traditional) to a foot of snow on the ground and the largest snowflakes we have ever seen falling from the sky... We were nervous it was going to be brown and bland outside because there was no snow in the forecast. We just felt so blessed the entire day it was so surreal, someone was definitely looking down on us.

The Proposal...
Spectacular and diligently planned. Dave surprised me on a random Wednesday when I was coming off an overnight shift. He said he was taking a personal day. We went for a walk and lunch together in Central Park. We headed to one of the gazebos overlooking the pond where Dave pulled out a bottle of wine from his bag and 2 glasses. Real smooth! We sipped on our wine and relaxed while gazing at the city skyline. I really had no idea. I was just excited that he was off on a Wednesday! one knee and popped the question! I immediately said “yes!” We enjoyed the moment, both of us just bursting with love and excitement. However, we had to get going… apparently, we had a flight to D.C. – the city where we first met. He even had called my work and scheduled vacation days for me. We packed a bag quickly and headed to the airport, through security, and to the gate, facetiming family as we went. Well, as we arrived at the gate, I told him it was the wrong one. Dave, this says “Charles de Gaulle” as I looked around for a nearby sign with the appropriate destination of Washington, D.C. He just looked at me and said “Did I say D.C.? I meant Paris.” We walked onto the plane 2 minutes later for a redeye flight to Paris. We woke up in the city of love, engaged. We were able to spend a wonderful long weekend together, basking in this special time and stuffing ourselves with all of the croissants au chocolat. He did well. Vermont is a state with so much natural beauty. We both have a love of mountains and the outdoors so it was the perfect spot. It’s also conveniently a few hours from our home in NYC.

We searched ALL over the Northeast and ended up hearing about Mountain Top Inn by word of mouth. When we visited, we knew it was everything we were picturing for our celebration and booked the date immediately. We wanted to have a weekend away from it all with our friends and family all in one place. We were all able to spend a long weekend together with hiking, horseback riding, and dinners outdoors together with lots of laughter and fresh mountain air.

Fav Moments...
One of the best decisions we made was to schedule just a few minutes to take a step back together to soak it all in. Some friends had recommended it to us. Ahead of time, we asked our photographer and coordinator to schedule this into our reception timeline. We knew, if it was up to us, we would not be able to tear ourselves away from the party. So, they tapped us on the shoulder and we snuck out during sunset to take some amazing photos and have a few minutes to ourselves. This was a really welcomed breath for us! And we captured some of our favorite photos. Of course, we ran back to the party afterwards. Also! Our band did a music line procession from our cocktail hour and into our reception – it was the best way to get the dance party started!

Plan the wedding that you two want! Try not to be persuaded by anything else. And really, just have a blast and take in every moment.

We met in 1st grade when we were both 6 years old, so our marriage has been 20 years in the making! We stayed friends throughout school and even worked at a local movie theater together in high school. We started dating after we both graduated from college and were engaged 3.5 years later!

The Venue...
Sugarbush Resort was the first venue we toured and were immediately in love with. We loved the idea of having an all-in-one location where we could host our rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception as well as have guests stay in the beautiful accommodations for the entire weekend. They also provide a wedding coordinator (Calli Willette) who was amazing and helped us plan start to finish and ensure the whole weekend went flawlessly.

Our color palette was blush, navy, gold, and green. Our theme was simple and elegant – a lot of our décor was driven by the natural beauty of the venue itself and the floral design with touches of gold details throughout.
Fav Details...
We loved how well the bridesmaid and groomsmen’s outfits came together and how perfectly they matched with our overall color aesthetic and florals. How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
Lots of love and lots of fun! We wanted the entire weekend to be a fun celebration of our love from the venue, décor, events, etc. We had a short, sweet, and meaningful ceremony followed by a fun reception that included delicious food and drinks, a photo booth, and even a surprise choreographed dance by Kate’s mom and her friends! 156 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

Fav Moments...

One of our favorite moments of the day was our first look on top of the mountain followed by a chair lift down with our maid of honor and best man (and a bottle of champagne!) It was a fun and relaxing few moments with each other and our best friends in the midst of all of the craziness of the day. The ceremony itself was another perfect moment of the day – marrying each other in the most gorgeous setting surrounded by our friends and family was everything we hoped for and more. Kate’s older brother, Phil, sang and performed “Can’t Help Falling in Love” on Ukulele and it had everyone in tears – It was such a special moment for us!

The Proposal...
Mike and met at work. We worked at the same hospital but on different units. We started eating lunch together and "coincidently" getting out of work at the same time to walk to the train together. Our first date was a lunch date on MLK day and we've been together ever since! He proposed in Napa. The vacation had been planned for a while as a combination celebration of a 30th birthday present for me and finishing grad school for him. My parents took us out there in September and little did I know, back in July he has asked for permission and they were all in on the surprise. for permission from my parents my mother gave him her mother's ring. Mike got the diamond reset into a beautiful antique style ring. He proposed at Chateau Montelena on a gazebo set over their small lake. After the proposal with my parents trying to sneakily watch from a distance my mom told me the diamond had been my grandmothers and I burst into tears! I didn't realize something like that would mean so much to me, but it is truly special!

The Inspiration...

My family has celebrated "cider weekend" since I was 1 year old. Everyone who knows me has heard me talk about it and countdown to it as that October weekend approaches every year. It is hands down my favorite weekend of the year. To me, making apple cider is the epitome of fall in VT and it always feels like home to me. When Mike and I first started dating he had not only never picked apples or made apple cider but he had never even been to VT! Of course I introduced to him to all three and it is one of his favorite weekends of the year now too! This year during cider weekend I got to marry Mike. My

two favorite things in one weekend! We wanted to create a weekend for our guests to experience a quintessential fall weekend in VT, and enjoy everything it has to offer. From pre-wedding apple picking shuttles and cider making at the reception to our "cider donut" cake and fresh pressed cider favors, we wanted every guest to feel that same sense of "home" that we feel every year.

DIY...
I did as much DIY as possible! Not only does it save money but I love being crafty! All of our wooden signs were stained by Mike and hand lettered by me. Our white pumpkins were embellished with bronze glitter to give them some personalized flair. Our wooden guest book was laser cut by my sister with our custom monogram. In general our decorations were on the lighter side. Mother nature helped with our decor- both the space for our ceremony as well as reception were beautiful with gorgeous view of the lake and foliage.

The Florals...
Our florals were done by New Leaf Organics and they were a stunning mixture of so many different flowers and plants- including cabbage! For the ceremony we had floral arrangements across the arch we were married in front of, two beautiful urns at the walkway and simple vases hung on shepherds hooks along the aisle. The boutonnieres and bouquets were all unique and radiated fall colors.

Our most prominent personalization was the cider making! Guest were able to press the cider and bottle their own favor. Of course everyone got a favor even if they didn't put in the work!

The Wedding Day Look...
My dress was a beautiful Pronovias lace fit and flare with 3/4 length sleeve and an off the shoulder neckline. I knew that was the look I wanted when I went shopping for a dress but had a hard time finding it. The owner of Flair in Boston, Stacy, worked with me and got creative to combined two pieces to make my dream dress. The talented tailors and Newbury Tailoring Co made the idea into reality! I wanted something elegant but with a rustic flair to fit the venue. Mike and his groomsmen wore gray 3 piece suits. Groomsmen wore navy ties to match the bridesmaids and Mike wore a special bowtie. real wedding is primarily Scottish and it was important to him to represent his heritage. The bow tie he wore was his family's tartan or plaid (the Smith clan).
Special Moments...
Getting married! Being husband and wife! Besides that I would say the most special moment was being on the dance floor with all of our favorite people. Mike and I love to dance... He is a much better dancer than I but I love it all the same! We had so much fun with all of our friends and family tearing up the dance floor all night!

Wedding Advice...
Everyone says to enjoy every moment because it goes by in a blink of an eye, and that's true! We were given the advice to take a moment or two to ourselves, to step away from the party and just watch everyone enjoying and relish the fact that everyone was there for us, to celebrate us and the beginning of this new adventure. The Romance...
Jonathan and I met through a mutual friend, Jared. He introduced us one night while out with friends on Church Street in Burlington. After meeting Jonathan that night, he insisted on taking me on out on a date. Jon arrived at my college apartment with a bottle of wine and a bouquet of flowers in his loud, blue Subaru. We became best friends that summer. After meeting my family Jonathan asked me to be his girlfriend. I was so excited! Since then, we have cheered together at the US World Cup game, caught fish in Salem Lake, downhill skied with our families, dressed up as gnomes for Halloween, traveled to Florida with friends, spent summer weeks on the coast of Maine and created many fun-filled memories. When I arrived home from work on a random Thursday afternoon in September, I found pretty potted plants scattered throughout our home! Sunflowers were on the table too, which are my favorite flowers. salmon dinner, but didn’t eat one bite of it. I was instructed to get dressed for an “outside activity”. Jonathan drove me to a local reservoir, where we have many memories with family and friends. He pulled out a picnic basket filled with chocolate and Vermont wine. We took the walking path around the water and set up a picnic to watch the sunset. After finishing his glass of wine, he pulled me up to my feet. At that moment I started to realize what was happening, and couldn’t believe it! He got down on one knee and asked the question I’ve been dreaming of since we met. I can’t remember exactly what my initial reaction was, but it involved a big “YES!”, crying, laughing, hopping in circles, kissing and giggling with excitement. The Romance...
Kendra and Ben both grew up in northern New York and have known each other since they were kids. Their paths continued to cross throughout the years whenever they found themselves back in New York and eventually they started planning a trip to Patagonia together with a few other friends. After spending two incredible weeks traveling and hiking in South America, Ben returned to his home in Philadelphia, PA and Kendra to Burlington, VT but they kept in touch and started planning their next adventure. The Proposal...
For Christmas, Kendra gave Ben a pair of new hockey skates and told him to choose a Canadian city for a weekend getaway in January. Ben chose Quebec City and Kendra planned the whole weekend, so she was completely caught off guard when they arrived at their Airbnb and started to plan their night out on the town, Ben got down on a knee and asked her to marry him! They spent the rest of the weekend celebrating in beautiful Quebec City!

The Venue...
We had never discussed getting married in the winter but after getting engaged in Quebec City’s winter wonderland and visiting Mountain Top Inn we started to think that winter could be a lot of fun. We both love Vermont winters and enjoy outdoor activities like skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and sledding. Mountain Top Inn has all of that! Most of our guests traveled from out

of state and we liked that everyone could stay right on site either at the lodge or in one of the many guest houses. We made it a full weekend celebration and took full advantage of the winter activities! It was really nice to spend time with our guests outside of just the wedding so that we could spend our night dancing and celebrating.

Theme / Color Palette...
Our color pallet was jewel tones. The bridesmaids wore teal dresses in different styles with rose gold jewelry, the flower girl wore a white dress with rose gold sequins, and the groomsmen wore navy blue suits with maroon ties. The guys boutonnieres were succulents and the bouquets pulled in all the colors really well with deep red & purple flowers and a lot of greenery. Fav Moments...
The snow and wind kept us from having the outdoor ceremony we were hoping for, but we had a beautiful indoor ceremony in the loft of the barn at Mountain Top Inn & Resort. The snow was coming down hard behind us through the large windows and it looked like a snow globe! We had a short and sweet ceremony officiated by Kendra’s brother-in-law and the couple wrote their own vows. Following the ceremony, as we started into our recessional song “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, everyone started singing and clapping to the chorus! We were so surprised, and it was such an awesome moment that neither of us will forget! Why Vermont...
I grew up in Montpelier, and love Vermont more than anyplace else. While Zach is from South Carolina, six years of visiting my family in Vermont led Zach to love it as well, and it seemed like the perfect place to get married. Our wedding was the first trip to Vermont for many of our guests, and we wanted to choose somewhere that would showcase how beautiful and unique Vermont is. Waitsfield was perfect, with its small town feel and beautiful surrounding mountains.

The Venue...
We were looking for somewhere that was both rustic and elegant - somewhere that would give our guests a true Vermont experience. I always loved the idea of a barn wedding, and the Skinner Barn was absolutely perfect. With a ceremony site overlooking mountains and ski slopes, beautiful ready-rooms, and an interior with so much thought to detail, we couldn’t have chosen a better venue.

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
Our wedding was particularly special for us because it was the first time our families had the chance to meet. Zach and I grew up on opposite ends of the country, so there wasn’t an opportunity for them to meet until the day before the wedding. One of my favorite moments of the whole weekend was at the rehearsal dinner, when I paused to look around the room and saw our families and friends mingling, talking, laughing, and eating. The Country Club of Vermont helped us create an amazing menu with a Vermont-Southern fusion theme, and it was the perfect way to welcome new family to Vermont.

Fav Moments...
While not a particular moment, I loved how easily the entire day flowed. The ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception were all at the Skinner Barn, and it made the whole day easy and relaxed. Family and the wedding party could go between taking photos and the cocktail hour easily, and there was never any “waiting around” time for guests. It allowed us to make the most of every second of the day!
Wedding Advice...
Keep it small! We only had 75 guests, and it allowed us to spend time with each and every one of them. It took so much stress away, and it was so special to be able to share the happiness of the day with every person there.

The Venue...
The Mountain Top Inn & Resort was love at first sight. We were amazed by the majestic snowy landscape and knew we had to have a winter wedding. The resort has a rustic feel with all the modern comforts and enough space for all of our crazy family and friends.

Fav Moments...
Our exchanging of vows was one of my favorite moments. We had written our vows separately and kept them a secret until the ceremony. While we each took different approaches writing, they were both honest and sentimental. Another favorite moment would definitely be our first look. In hindsight, it was really special to have that quiet moment together beforehand. It also allowed us to spend more time with our guests during the cocktail hour.

Wedding Advice...
Consider taking a day or two to yourselves before returning back to work or heading on your honeymoon. Being the bride and groom is a lot of fun, but it is also an exhausting weekend. We were very happy that we decided to stay at the Mountain Top Inn & Resort an additional night after our wedding. If you know your guests are going to be dancers, make sure you make a diverse playlist and leave space for a big dance floor! We were glad we worked with our wedding coordinator to optimize table layout for maximum dance space. We also worked closely with our DJ to make a playlist that guests of all ages would enjoy.
