Shimmer or Matte make-up on your wedding day? BEAUTY BUZZ
HOPSKOCH PHOTOGRAPHY
By: Jennifer Goslovich, Owner; PierVana Hair-Spa-Jewels
As a professional make-up artist of many years, I can answer that question. The answer is both, but with some guidelines to follow. Is this a day or night wedding? Lighting and make-up go hand in hand. Its all about the flash. Matte Eyeshadow refers to an eye shadow that does not have any kind of light reflectors and does not appear shinny when applied. In terms of its texture, matte eyeshadow is silky just like other types of eye shadows. Matte shadows are meant to be used as “compliments” to other textures/finishes. Mattes can give you a soft look that will bring full color. Matte eyeshadow alone is best if worn during the day. Add a touch of shimmer to transition to evening. Shimmer Eyeshadow is a type of cosmetic that is applied to the eyelids, brow bone, and corners of the eyes. Shimmer eyeshadow contains small particles that reflect the light. Shimmer eyeshadow comes in virtually any color imaginable, in warm colors 12 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK
№9
and cool colors. There are shimmer eye shadows for all types of looks. Whether you tend to go natural or like to boost your eye appearance. Remember for bridal make-up, shimmers reflect light so use for high lighting and to instantly brighten the eye. Select a neutral shade for a daytime wedding, add a touch of shimmer for evening Brides. Shimmer is available in most make-up so be careful to not over do it. You want to look like a glowing goddess on your wedding day, but you need to keep a couple of areas matte, like your forehead and upper lip. If your forehead is shiny, you're going to look oily, not healthy. And if your upper lip is gleaming, it's going to look like you're sweating. Be sure to only apply shimmer on your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and on the inner corners of your eyes. vermontbridemagazine.com
beauty buzz Your makeup is an accessory just like your veil, except guests are going to be focusing in on your face. A good rule of thumb is to start thinking about your makeup early on — perhaps right after you lock down your dress. That way your whole look goes together. For example, if you're going with a vintage-inspired lace gown, think ethereal makeup. Everyone will be looking at your face and its radiant glow, and photos are forever. I don’t think there is anything wrong with doing your makeup yourself, but unless you’re knowledgeable about bridal makeup and how looks photograph, it’s best to hire a makeup artist for a wedding. That’s because bridal makeup is different from everyday makeup. On your big day, makeup needs to be waterproof and tear-proof so your face won’t look like a big mess if you shed a few tears. In addition, your makeup should look good both in the flesh and in pictures. A professional makeup artist knows how textures and product turn out in photos and will make sure you won’t look greasy, shiny or bad in them too.

WEDDED BLISS
with a modern twist on vintage By: Carmen George
PERSONALIZE YOUR WEDDING
ALL PHOTOS BY CARMEN GEORGE
Many brides are taking classic styles and putting a fresh modern twist on them to claim them as their own. Here are three women whose style shined on their wedding day.
Katherine and Alexander chose a historic place for their wedding ceremony—Waterworks Food + Drink Restaurant in Winooski (see their ad on page 41). Housed in the Champlain Mill, this pre-World War I industrial architecture building sits on the banks of the rambling Winooski River. The interiors of the restaurant contain exposed brick and displays a wall-sized image depicting proud mill workers handling wool. Recently these interiors received a 21st Century update. Its furniture and fixtures are contemporary and comfortable, yet harmonize with the historical setting. When you enter you have a sense of place. You can feel it's roots to the people that built this city. It is the same experience many people have when they host their wedding in a Vermont barn. Our bride Katherine arrived at the venue looking glamorous. Her look was a fresh take on the 1940s. Her hair was a softened version of Actress Lauren Bacall’s wavy hair style. Katherine’s v-neck dress flowed down in pleats to her calfs. Her bold red lips framed her gorgeous smile and mascara accentuated her beautiful blue eyes. The rest of her makeup was soft natural tones on the cheeks and eyes. The flowers for the wedding, food, and other elements were locally sourced, emphasizing the values of this modern plant biologist scientist bride. The merging of vintage and modern made this wedding stand out and feel refreshingly unpretentious yet stylish. The lounge area in the heart of the restaurant allowed guests to relax, socialize and laugh with the couple. Isn't that the best part of weddings?! Carmen George is a Justice of the Peace, florist, and photographer. She has over 25 years of event planning experience and enjoys helping people. She lives in Burlington, Vermont with her husband, daughter and large pretty flower beds. www.officiantvermont.com

wedded bliss Haley and Tyler, from Mt. Holly, love the 1950s vibe. Her pillbox hat she found on Amazon. Her mother-in-law designed and attached a birdcage veil and made the sash. Those accessories, combined with her tailored knee length white dress, harkened back to the style of fashion icon and former First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. The bride kept the 50s style going by using a bold cherry red throughout the elements of the wedding. This included her lips, roses in her bouquets, shoes, and bridesmaid’s dresses. The groom and groomsmen followed suit with red suspenders, bow ties and vest from McNeil and Reedy’s in Rutland. This mountainside wedding took place on a sunny day which was perfect for making the red color pop with joyful energy! During the group portraits the couple offered a modern surprise for their parents—the DJ played a favorite swinging tune and the bride and groom grabbed their parents and literally did a happy dance! It was a great finale to a wedding overflowing with happiness.
Sarah and Justin's two sons were part of their wedding and Sarah decided on giving the boys an adorable 1930s look. She did this with a newspaper boy caps, suspenders, bow ties and even knickers. I’ve seen the use of 1930s suspenders and bow ties in many weddings. It is a smart way to give flair to a casual afternoon wedding, or to keep a groom looking stylish after he takes off his jacket during a more formal evening wedding. Suspenders can be added easily and inexpensively to suit pants which can help offthe-rack suits look more customized. Sarah’s smart use of this vintage look helped the boys stand out during the wedding that was designed with "family" as a core value to the ceremony. Her wedding included a sand unity feature. Each member of the family poured in their unique color. It is easy to use vintage elements to make your modern wedding be more personal and memorable. I’ve seen brides and grooms who included gifts from their grandparents or parents such as vintage hair pins, brooches and tie clips. It can be a nice way to remember loved ones who have passed. I hope my article has inspired you to research these bygone eras to make your wedding more special and personal.

What better location for a celebration of a new union, and fresh love, then a setting for budding plants and flowers. As a greenhouse nurtures and shelters its young seedlings into strong and healthy plants, so does a newly wedded couple tend and care for their relationship so that it will flourish and bloom into something beautiful to behold. A greenhouse is the perfect backdrop for a variety of styles and themes, from a rustic and laid back country party, to an elegant soiree full of vintage accents. The transparent walls let in tons of natural light and cast a warm and bright ambiance throughout, highlighting each pop of color from the greenery and florals. Airy and light, it leaves your guests feeling refreshed, restored, and full of joy. With all the natural beauty surrounding the ocean, it's enough to make you believe there's something more waiting just below the surface, like a beautiful mermaid ready to leave the sea to join her love on shore. Sequin linens, pearl draped chavari chairs, a rhinestone encrusted gown, and a moonlit stroll on the cliffs put a modern twist on the idea of the sea side fairy tale. The shimmer and shine of the sun reflected in the rich gold and sparkling blue of the table setting, the golden-hour light bringing out the luster of the pearl accents, and a bouquet that could've been plucked from the most beautiful garden on the ocean floor. With a color palette of soft green gray, seafoam, pearl white, and gold this inspiring design is fit for any mermaid princess.

Verdant, an adjective that means "of the bright green color of lush grass", is a fitting description for the vibrant and lush style featured here. It all started with the pairing of the color green and the material of brick, then soft, flowing pinks and whitewash driftwood were added to make everything seem more airy and light. Wild greenery with pops of white and pink in the florals bring the outdoors in, while the farmhouse table and vintage china round out the elegant, rustic theme. To add some glamour and richness, brilliant emerald jewelry and gold accents tie everything together.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US YOUR FAVORITE OR MOST MEMORABLE CAKE OR DESSERT THAT YOU CREATED FOR A WEDDING? My favorite occasion was a local wedding where I was asked to do a "dessert buffet" for a large wedding. It consisted of a two-tiered cake, four varieties of mini cupcakes, mini maple cheesecakes, mini cream cheese brownies and ten pies(five flavors). It was a lot of fun and made such a beautiful display with lots of variety for the bride and groom and their guests. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES WHO ARE PLANNING WHAT CAKE OR DESSERTS TO OFFER AT THEIR RECEPTION? I always tell my couples to go with whatever moves them! There are no "rules" for wedding desserts and the sky is the limit so follow your taste buds. I've done weddings that have run the gamut of variety in dessert choices to just a simple tiered cake. We can customize your wedding desserts to suit you and your guests. The sky is the limit..

Pink is a classic wedding color due to it's softness and feminine feel. It is a joyful and charming color that makes everything prettier, available in a multitude of shades it also pairs well with a variety of other colors. It also helps that some of the more gorgeous flowers bloom in pink, which clearly shows that nature agrees it is the best hue for highlighting what is pleasing to the eye. Here you will see a variety of pinks paired with soft oranges, greens, and whites. A stunning peach gown with lace details furthers the feminine feel of this lovely feast in the woods. Set on a long, communal table and plush chairs blends luxury and comfort with the unparalleled beauty of nature.

The Perfect Vermont Wedding Favor If you are having your wedding in Vermont then chances are you have a great fondness for the Green Mountain State and are eager to share it’s beauty and splendor with all of your closest friends and family. A common thread with Vermont weddings is the desire to showcase Vermont made products and, especially, food. No matter where your guests are from they have most likely heard of Vermont maple syrup—a sweet delicacy that conjures images of red, maple leaf covered
hills, stone walls, and rustic barns in bucolic farm fields. It is widely coveted for it’s unique flavor and can be quite hard to find, as well as expensive, once you get outside the boundaries of New England. This is what makes maple syrup the perfect Vermont wedding favor. It is something your guests will both love and are guaranteed to use and enjoy. Give them a piece of Vermont to take home and remember your celebration with every delicious drop.

Watercolor stationery also plays into the fluid and colorful nature of wine and rustic calligraphy hints at the hand crafted nature of one of our most beloved libations.

How and where did you meet?
Karri and I met on September 27, 2013 at The Roots, the restaurant in Rutland where Karri works. I was having dinner with a friend and we were introduced.
What was the proposal like?
Karri proposed via a flash mob at the University Mall in South Burlington, Vermont. Karri enlisted 40 of our friends and family to be involved in the proposal.
How did you choose your venue?
When we toured the Mountain Top Inn and Resort, we both knew immediately that it was the place we wanted to be married. The scenery and setting were exactly what we had envisioned.

Vermont Bride provided great inspiration from real Vermont weddings. We found the resources in the magazine helpful in finding reliable vendors for our wedding , which was particularly helpful planning a wedding from afar.
How and where did you meet?
Nate and Elizabeth met on a chair lift, as ski race coaches, in Boulder, CO. At the end of the day they exchanged phone numbers and “802” stood out to Nate so he inquired to where Elizabeth was from. After Elizabeth shared she was from Vermont, they realized that they had actually been introduced via email by a mutual friend a year prior.
What was the proposal like?
Nate chose to propose to Elizabeth doing their favorite thing—skiing. They were in Aspen, CO for a ski weekend with family on a beautiful blue bird day. After a forty-five minute hike to 12,392 feet, Nate proposed at the top of Highland’s Bowl. He had arranged for a photographer to be there to capture the proposal and skiing shots on the way down the mountain. Family and friends gathered on the mountain to celebrate with drinks and an afternoon of skiing.
Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?
There was never a question that we would not be married in Vermont. Elizabeth grew up in Vermont, her parent’s were married along the same hillside and Nate fell in love with Vermont over many summer vacations.

How did you choose your venue?
Elizabeth’s parents were married on the same hillside 29 years prior. Elizabeth grew up skiing at Burke Mountain (her middle name is Burke) and having the mountain in view during her wedding was a childhood dream. At the Pavilion in the Pines they could have the ceremony in the meadow, with views in all directions, and have a reception in a open air pavilion that provided a great space that they could make their own. Nate and Elizabeth had not walked the venue prior to making their final decision. It was Elizabeth’s father who said it was the perfect space for a party and the views could not get any better, which sealed the deal.
What was your theme/color palette? Ivory, gold, and navy.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding?
We had two large wrought iron chandeliers that we hung in the pavilion, draped in greenery and flowers. The chandeliers and many of the flower vases, candlesticks and a large gold mirror came from a collection of the bride’s maternal grandparents.

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
It was a blend of classic elegance and rustic touches, formal but comfortable. Nate and Elizabeth love to host dinner parties. They felt that their wedding was the opportunity to host the ultimate dinner party. Their guests were people who have known them through all the stages of their lives from multiple generations. They wanted people to see them in the ceremony and in touches throughout the celebration. They chose to have a cocktail/station style dinner so people could eat, mingle and dance freely. Fun was the aim of our reception and we think we succeeded!
What were some of your favorite moments?
The ceremony was the highlight for Nate and Elizabeth. It was very personal and standing in a meadow looking at Willoughby Gap does not get more picturesque. Seeing their family and friends surrounding them and feeling their support is indescribable. Nate’s favorite moment was seeing Elizabeth walk down the aisle. Elizabeth loved seeing Nate when she walked down the aisle, she started to laugh and almost began to skip. After cocktail hour the Maple Leaf Seven lead our guests through the woods to the pavilion for the reception. The first dance was also a highlight. Nate and Elizabeth had taken a few lessons prior to the wedding and learned a few surprise moves that elicited some cheers. Elizabeth’s extended family surprised her with their wedding tradition of singing, "You are my Sunshine." The toasts from the best man, maid of honor, and fathers were spectacular.

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?
Be authentic—your wedding should be a reflection of you and the commitment you are making to one another. Make a promise to each other to have fun with the process. It will be stressful at times, and something will go wrong, but going in with a joyous attitude will make it feel easy. Timelines are key. Write them in advance and share them will all people involved in the wedding setup and day. When it comes to the day, be present, be with your spouse and be with your guests. Savor every moment, it really does go by too fast.

What was the planning process like?
The planning process was challenging. We live in New York City and Waitsfield, VT is a 6 hour drive. Everything was done remotely and required a lot of coordination and decision making both on my part and from my fabulous friend and wedding planner! It is tough to make decisions when you aren't seeing, touching, tasting things in person! We also chose to get married on a property vs. a structured venue which means you have to bring everything in. When getting married at an actual venue, you don't have to make sure there is an oven and refrigerator on site and that the generator can support your caterer and a 9-piece band. In the end, it was worth every challenge and decision!
Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?
Pat and I chose to get married in Vermont because his family connection and the personal connection we have made over the years. His parents built a house in the Valley in the 1960's and have been skiing at Sugarbush ever since. Pat first invited me to the Vermont house in 2004 for New Years. We have been weekend warriors ever since!
How did you choose your venue?
I always dreamed of having my wedding outside, followed by a tented reception. Luckily for me, Pat shared this same vision. The venue offered us a picturesque backdrop for the ceremony and a large enough flat area to pitch a tent. People had the freedom to roam the property, take pictures down by the river, and basque in the natural beauty of Vermont. The venue just felt like "us". What was the most important part or detail of your wedding?
The most important part of our wedding was the ceremony. People tend to lose focus of what this day is actually about. We both tried to focus on the importance of what was actually happening here. Of course, our guests enjoyment and the entire reception was of great importance too. We wanted an incredible party with lots of dancing because that is what we both love. For details, there were several things that stood out. My aunt painted a watercolor map of the Mad River Valley that we rolled up and put in each guests gift bag. Then, my mother-and-father-in-law bought the ski lift chair we got engaged on and created a freestanding structure from with the chair hung. They had it brought to the venue and it was our photo booth. We also had cocktail napkins with our monograms that I loved! Don't forget the flowers too!
What was your favorite moment or part of the day?
I have several favorite moments. Getting ready with all my girlfriends and family was incredibly special. Walking down the aisle with my dad and having Pat see me for the first time was incredible. We took a moment to practice our dance by the river, surrounded by greenery. The photographer captured this. It was our last moment totally alone for the evening. 86 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

real wedding Did you include any traditions in your wedding?
My brother read the "Irish Blessing" which was read at my parents' wedding. We also had my cousins dressed as a chicken and gorilla which is my mom's side of the family's tradition! Overall, I would say it was a fairly traditional wedding.
Please tell us about any special details from your wedding.
We included all 8 of our nieces and nephews in the wedding. Our oldest niece walked our dog, Todos, down the aisle. Todos wore a baby's breath wreathe around her neck which was the best little detail! We also had our invitation watercolor on our table number cards. I loved that. I worked with a fabulous vendor for our invitation per the recommendation of my amazing planner. We worked together to design a custom watercolor of the Sugarbush mountains for our invitation. It was soft, elegant, and set the tone beautifully for our wedding.

real wedding What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?
The bride usually plans most of the wedding, but make sure to include your fiance. You want the day to be about both of you not just one of you. Also, make sure to delegate and by the week of your wedding, let go and hand off everything to your wedding planner or on-site coordinator. You want to enjoy your day, not orchestrate it!

How and where did you meet?
We met in Burlington Vermont at a mutual friends beer pong party. Corey was playing beer pong and doing a Steve Irwin impression, obviously, I couldn’t resist.
What was the proposal like?
We spent the day at California Hot Springs then he proposed under the stars that evening.
Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?
Even though we live in California, Vermont is our home and where we both grew up. Our families are here and it seemed like a no-brainer to get hitched in Vermont. It really is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding?
My family is very artistic and musical. There was amazing music and beautiful artistic details that really made the wedding unique, I love how the teamwork made it one of a kind. I also loved the flowers, my florist actually grew some of the flowers herself for the wedding. real wedding How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
We like to think we are a pretty laid back couple. I wanted the wedding to be really beautiful with great food and music but I wanted everyone to feel really comfortable. We also wanted it to reflect the state of Vermont so we were quite meticulous about choosing small local vendors/businesses.
What were some of your favorite moments?
That’s a tough one to answer but I surprisingly really enjoyed our first dance because it felt like no one was there but us. I also loved our hay wagon ride from our venue to our overnight rental.
What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?
I think it’s important to sit down with your significant other and decide how to make the wedding reflect you as a couple. Even if you have a wedding planner executing it, I think the best wedding are those that really reflect who the couple is. Also, just like a relationship/marriage nothing will ever be perfect. Do your best to let go of perfection and allow yourself to enjoy the time you have surrounded by all your people.

How and where did you meet? We met at Union College through mutual friends.
What was the proposal like? When we first began dating, Scott made me breakfast to impress me. In August 2015, I
had just finished studying for the New York Bar Exam, and was taking the time to catch up on some much-needed sleep. Scott had originally planned to make me breakfast again, bring in our dog, and ask me to marry him, but on the day he decided to do so, I unexpectedly woke up early and found him searching the house for English muffins. I said yes and we went out for bagels instead.
Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding? My family has had a home on Lake Champlain in North
Ferrisburgh, Vermont for three generations, and I grew up spending every summer there. Lake Champlain is a special, peaceful place signifying home and family for me, and Scott has grown to love it as well. Additionally, we are both avid skiiers and hikers, and love spending time in the Green Mountains for both. Vermont’s natural beauty and relaxed personality seemed like a natural expression of who we are as a couple.
How did you choose your venue? We both love to ski, something we bonded over when they first met. Sugarbush was the first place we skiied together as a couple, when we drove up for a day from college. It is a place to which we have always loved to return and ski every year. Additionally, we love the laid back, rustic feel of the Gate House Lodge.
What was your theme/color palette? Colors were dark purple, copper, green and cream. Floral scheme centered
heavily on natural local greenery.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding? During the ceremony, we chose a handfasting ceremony, a Celtic tradition
in which the couple binds their hands together and says their vows (it is thought to be the original source of the phrase “tying the knot”). We used the bowline from my grandfather’s boat on Lake Champlain, which had been tied to the boat for over 30 years.
How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple? We are both very focused on family, friends, and our home
and history together. Before the ceremony, I did a set of “first look” photos with my dad (I’m his youngest daughter). On a table in the entryway to our ceremony, we had framed photographs of our parents and grandparents on their wedding day, and our families featured prominently in the ceremony. Our two dogs, Rudder and Alpine, are very important to us, and Scott’s wonderful parents walked them down the aisle. We both love to ski, and our ceremony and reception took place with a beautiful view of the ski slopes at Sugarbush. Because Vermont is a special place to us, we also made sure to serve lots of local Vermont food and drink, including cheese and craft beer (Lawson’s Sip of Sunshine was a favorite).
What were some of your favorite moments? We did our first look photos at the top of the Super Bravo lift at Sugarbush resort.
Scott rode up the chair lift ahead of me and waited at the top, and I rode up after and walked up behind him at the top of the mountain. Just as we started up the lift, it began to snow in beautiful, fat flakes. We were able to have a special, peaceful moment together at the top of the lift, seeing each other for the first time on our wedding day in a gorgeous snowstorm. I was wearing a fur coat that had been worn by my grandmother, who passed away shortly before our wedding. In college, Scott’s fraternity, Sigma Chi, had a weekly party called “Late Nights,” when a small group of close friends from all over the school would gather in the small hours on Saturday nights and dance to 80s and 90s hits. “Late Nights” are a fond memory for us and many of our friends from Union College. We were able to get a copy of the playlist, and played it at the end of the night at our wedding. Not only did our friends love the memories, but both of our families jumped in and had a great time dancing too! real wedding What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding? Ask for advice, particularly
when planning a wedding from a distance. Local vendors have done many local weddings in the past, and have great ideas and suggestions. Also, let your vendors be part of your creative process – many of the elements of our wedding came to be after we asked vendors what ideas they wanted to try, but hadn’t been able to yet.

How and where did you meet? Ryan and I met as college students at Springfield College in Springfield, MA. Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?
Back when we were dating, my husband and I lived in Burlington for one summer and fell in love with Vermont’s natural beauty and way of life. With our families scattered across New England and Ohio, I knew that many of our guests would have to travel to attend the wedding. Since that summer in Burlington, I knew that Ryan and I would return for this special occasion. Vermont truly was the perfect place to host our family and friends.
How did you choose your venue?
The Old Lantern Inn & Barn was the perfect venue for an out-of-town bride like myself. Geographically, I wanted to be near Burlington so guests can explore the city and easily fly in and out. Charlotte was a short drive from Burlington and offered so many scenic views and activities for guests to enjoy. I was looking for a beautiful barn space, and not only was Old Lantern Inn & Barn and its grounds spectacular, but the venue also provided so many amenities, including tables, chairs, linens, and centerpieces. Chef Roland Gaujac prepares amazing hors d'oeuvres, meals, and desserts on-site, and their Inn is perfect for immediate family and the wedding party to stay during the wedding weekend. Old Lantern Inn & Barn truly made wedding planning easy, and I am so grateful to Lisa, Roland, and Julie for working their magic to create our dream wedding.

real wedding What was your theme/color palette?
Our wedding featured vintage maps with a white, green, and yellow color palette. The colors were fresh and light, and beautifully captured the air of late spring. I was drawn to the vintage maps for their visual aesthetic, sense of adventure, and the ability to highlight the places we traveled to as a couple. Throughout the ballroom hung paper garland that I, along with devoted family members, made in a true DIY fashion. Instead of using traditional table numbers we named the tables after states and specific places that are significant to our love story.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding?
In lieu of a traditional guestbook, our guests snapped their pictures with a Fujifilm Instax camera and hung their portraits in a large frame. I thought this looked great in the space and later I put the pictures into a photo album as our guestbook keepsake.

How and where did you meet?
We met through mutual friends in college and, like all great love stories, hit it off at a college party.
What was the proposal like?
Knowing my love of history and stopping at every possible informational sign or historical plaque, Pat planned a picnic in the Arnold Arboretum in Boston. He had friends place a plaque that read “It was here in this very spot that Pat asked the love of his life, Jenny to marry him. Her answer was…..” After guiding me to correct path and pointing out the plaque, he got down on one knee and popped the question.
Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?
Pat and I have always loved Vermont and take vacations there to hike and ski throughout the year. With our family living all across the country, we wanted to pick a beautiful, relaxing destination that everyone could enjoy. Vermont was the obvious choice.
How did you choose your venue?
With everyone traveling, we wanted to find a location where our family and bridal party could stay and spend the weekend together. We also wanted a rustic barn setting showcasing Vermont’s beauty and couldn’t have found a better place than the The West Mountain Inn. We knew we had found the perfect place when we stayed the night while visiting the inn and had their amazing breakfast in the morning. What was your theme/color palette?
I suppose it would be rustic, but we just wanted a natural, relaxed wedding. We were inspired by the purple lavender, blue thistles and succulents in the floral arrangements that Pat’s mom created for the wedding. We also used a lot of family crystal and lace that popped against the natural wood in the original barn.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding?
The cake!!! I don’t have a big sweet tooth, so instead we opted for a cake of cheese. We worked with a local cheese shop Stinky Brooklyn to create a tier “cake” made of three different kinds of delicious cheeses from Vermont paired with honey, fruit, nuts, and jam. We even had tons of leftovers to keep the celebration going once we returned home. Also, I loved the chandeliers that we brought into the barn. I was on the fence given the additional cost, but my mom insisted. It was a simple addition that really changed the entire feel of the wedding and looked beautiful in the rustic barn. How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
The true focus of the weekend was spending time with our family and friends who came to celebrate with us. We found the perfect location to relax, hike, share stories around a fire with s'mores and have so much delicious food.
What were some of your favorite moments?
There were so many amazing moments it’s hard to pick a few. After our rehearsal dinner, we invited everyone to join us for s’mores and beer and wine at an outdoor bonfire. It was the perfect way to see everyone before the big day! The morning of our wedding, my friend led a yoga class in the barn where we were getting married later and it was the perfect calming way to start the hectic day. Finally, Pat and I exchanged personal vows during our first look before the ceremony and I’m so glad we did. Not only were the vows so meaningful, but our photographer got some amazing shots that we didn’t even notice being taken! 118 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

real wedding What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?
There are so many options when you start planning and you don’t have to do it all! Take the time to sit down - just the two of you - to figure out what the top three things you want for the day and you’ll figure out your direction for the wedding. Also, find a venue that can help you with the process and has people you like! After meeting Terry, the wedding coordinator at The West Mountain Inn, I knew I had found the perfect location. Not only was the inn itself beautiful, but Terry made sure that our priorities were taken care of and filled in the gaps for the things that we didn’t have strong opinions on.

How and where did you meet?
High school sweethearts, we grew up in the same town of Chester, VT – started dating in 8th grade!
What was the proposal like?
James took me down to the Burlington waterfront docks, he asked to take my picture and told me to face the lake, when he turned around he was on one knee. He was so scared he was going to drop the ring through the cracks in the dock and into the water!
Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?
Both of our families are here, its where we grew up, and its where we want to start a family. We love Vermont for its beauty, people, seasons, and community. It was an easy pick

How did you choose your venue?
Basin Harbor Club was the first venue we toured. As soon as we saw it, we fell in love and knew it was the place. We loved the idea that all of our friends and family could stay in the cabins and accommodations throughout the property, all have such character and history and we loved that. We loved that everything was right there at Basin Harbor as well, there was no need to leave for anything! It was like a destination wedding without leaving Vermont.
How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
It was a true representation of all of the love we are surrounded by in our lives. We truly feel we have the best friends in the world and we have grown up with these same friends our whole lives. A lot of our relationship is built upon respect, honestly, trust, but also having a really good time and never taking ourselves too seriously. We laughed so much throughout our wedding weekend and marveled at how truly lucky we were to be surrounded by beautiful Vermont as well as our friends and family who traveled from near and far.

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?
Take little time to enjoy your day. Even if it’s just for 1 minute that you and your partner step away. Look around you and let it all sink in‌you are surrounded by love and beauty.
