hen I was sent the files for the winter/spring edition of Vermont Bride, I had a snap-into-reality-check that summer and autumn were officially bygone days and new seasons, whether we liked it or not, were upon us. Lucky for us, we live in a state that offers continual beauty throughout the year. We are excited to share these crisp-as-autumn-leaves pages full of inspiration, articles, vibrant images, and real stories of love with beautiful brides and dashing groomsmen. Let’s jump in and ask, “Have you ever had a bad hair day?” We all have and the day of your wedding is not the time for an elastic to pull it back and baseball cap to cover it up. Check out Beauty Buzz to find the right hairstyle: elegant, classic romantic or bohemian, for your personality. And while you’re in the dress-up mood, get that feeling of haute couture with magnificent wedding gowns from Sincerity Bridal, Tara Lynn Bridal, and inspired by the easy, breezy feel of California coastal towns, the collection of Amy Kuschel. Stunning! When it’s time to let that elegant up-do down and head for the beach, imagine yourself on the island of St. Lucia, dubbed ‘The most beautiful island in the Caribbean!’ What better time to dig your pedicure in the hot sand than the upcoming frosty days of a Vermont winter? Our featured real couples have distinct preferences: from arriving on a Cinderella-like horsedrawn carriage, to inviting Storm Troopers (yes, as in Star Wars) to the ceremony, to a summer engagement soiree transformed into a winter-like dream, plus mingling rich traditions and elements of an Indian wedding implemented to perfection. Stories to encourage and infuse your imaginative mind. When the winter day darkens begin before dinner time, we could all use a burst of color. Let’s add a splash of coral to refresh and awaken our sense(see ideas in Shades of Coral). Just because summer and autumn are bygone seasons, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate a Bygone Romance of old-fashioned military nostalgia with vintage details. Look at the amazing images on pages 22 – 28. Remember the question about having a bad hair day and wearing a cap for cover? Consider hanging up the baseball cap for a more sophisticated choice. Derby Devine marries the love of horses that Vermonters and our counterparts from down South share, complete with head-turning headwear, to make an equestrian estate themed wedding that’s off to the races! As sure as January brings driving snow and icicles hanging from rooftops, couples will marry amid the fluffy falling snowflakes of northeast winters. Cozy up to a fire and don’t forget your fluffy slippers to enjoy this issue of Vermont Bride.
Cheers to all our brides, winter and summer, and all days in-between.

HOW LONG HAS CAST IRON CATERING BEEN IN BUSINESS?
Our team of experienced Chefs and front-of-the-House staff have been catering events since 2010. In 2015, we made the decision to work under the name of Cast Iron Catering. We are committed to working closely with you to customize your menu and style of service. We are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with Steve and Jennifer DePalma, owners of The Barn at Smuggler’s Notch in Cambridge, to become the in-house caterer of their premier wedding venue. PLEASE SHARE WITH US A SAMPLING OF A MENU THAT YOU OFFER FOR WEDDINGS:
At Cast Iron Catering, the food that speaks most to us is slow cooked, rustic fare with an emphasis on bringing the richness of Vermont’s farms to your table. A sample menu might be; Applewood fired rib eye with chimichurri, grilled line-caught fish with herb vinaigrette, farro salad with root vegetables and herbs, olive oil smashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus with romesco sauce. We also offer an array of unique appetizers and a taco bar from our sister company, The Mad Taco. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A FAVORITE OR MEMORABLE WEDDING THAT YOU CATERED?.
Over the years, we seen some incredible dance moves, heard some hilarious speeches and seen some original table settings. To date, one of the most gorgeous venues we have worked in was at CrossHaven Farm on Rt. 100B in Moretown. The owners took such care in preparing the gardens and guests 12 | VERMONTBRIDEM AGA ZINE.COM | WINTER/SPRING 2017
mingled between locations across the property. Between the stunning venue and the wonderfully spirited (and dressed!) guests, this wedding was a joy to be a part of. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WORKING WITH COUPLES TO PLAN THEIR CATERING?
We take great care in building a relationship with our clients leading up to their wedding so that they can relax and know that their vision is being executed by professionals they know and trust.. We play a significant role in making a very important day be successful and enjoyable. Our favorite part of working with couples is the process where we get to know them, learn about their story, their vision, and all of the unique details that they want to go into the crafting of such an important day. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE COUPLES WHO ARE LOOKING FOR A CATERER?
The food at your wedding is a huge aspect of your celebration and should be placed up front when deciding how to prioritize spending your resources. In that vein, we think it’s important to really sort out what aspects of the meal you are firm on and which ones you can be flexible on in terms of your budget. We can often make adjustments to a menu and service style to meet your expectations if you are both flexible and clear on what matters most to you. Our best advice would be to speak up, as well as to be open to suggestions from your caterer on how to execute a perfect service for your big day.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PHOTOGRAPHER?
I started my wedding photojournalism business in 2005 alongside my editorial photojournalism career. Wedding photojournalism has been my primary focus since 2011. After graduating from Tulane University with a BA in English in 2002, I went on to study photojournalism at Brooks Institute of Photography. My first editorial assignments were shooting features for Highlights for Children Magazine and cover stories for amNewYork and New York Press. I’ve been a staff photographer at TimesLedger Newspapers in Queens, NY, and at Half Moon Bay Review, Half Moon Bay Magazine and Pacifica Magazine in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the past 11 years, my freelance photojournalism, video stories and writing have been published in national and regional newspapers and magazines. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A PHOTOGRAPHER?
I really decided to become a storyteller and the camera is the best vehicle I have. I am of course both a romantic and a nostalgic—kind of a magic bullet for a wedding photojournalist. I love to hold onto time through photos and I’m endlessly curious and interested in hearing people’s stories. In my day-today life I really don’t go anywhere without my camera. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A FAVORITE OR MEMORABLE WEDDING THAT YOU PHOTOGRAPHED?
shooting Lisa and Katy’s elopement at Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes. Lisa’s grandmother had recently passed away and Lisa said she kept finding handfuls of dimes since her grandmother’s passing. When we walked up to the ceremony site, which was overlooking Lake Champlain on an evening with incredible light, Lisa and Katy looked down and saw several dimes in the exact location they stood to exchange their vows. It was such a surreal moment. I love the serendipity, unpredictability and magic that happens at each wedding. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WORKING WITH COUPLES TO PHOTOGRAPH THEIR SPECIAL DAY?
I love hearing how couples met, listening to their ceremony vows and hearing their wedding day speeches. I love using color to tell their wedding story. The colors at a wedding are very intentional. Its often one of the first decisions a couple makes—what their wedding color palette will be. I find its color that first inspires me in any situation. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES LOOKING FOR A PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THEIR WEDDING?
Go with your instincts and pick the person you feel the most yourselves around.
That’s sort of like picking your favorite child—I really don’t have a favorite. But there was this one moment that will stay with me forever. I was 14 | VERMONTBRIDEM AGA ZINE.COM | WINTER/SPRING 2017

randma's recipe for bread and butter pickles, strawberry jam made with berries picked on the farm, vintage tea cups and saucers found in the attic, the sound of melodic birds chirping in the meadow, and the smell of fresh cut grass laid out to dry in the sun—these are the fond memories and sensations of a farmhouse in Vermont. Weathered barns and split rail fences dot the landscape. Lush peonies and juicy berries abound and using nature's bounty is a time-honored tradition. ermont may seem far from the land of Dixie, but the elements of southern hospitality are easily translated to the northern climate. We are already known for our warm, friendly people—throw in a few delectably rich refreshments, overflowing arrangements of palm fronds, and big style, and the Mason Dixon line starts to blur. Horses are also loved and revered in the green mountains, so a wedding with an equestrian twist is just as much at home here as it is in Kentucky.

fter Kellie’s parents built a home in Queechee, Vermont, Kellie and Steven have enjoyed numerous relaxing visits as a reprieve to their normal lives in New York City. The area always relaxes and rejuvenates them with an abundance of nature, fresh air, and starry skies. After they became engaged, the couple knew they needed to share this experience with all of their friends and family. Space exploration is an important passion to Kellie, both personally and professionally, so it felt natural to incorporate it into their wedding. A former NASA astronaut and Space Station Commander officiated the ceremony and they included Storm Troopers during the recessional for a bit of fun and lightheartedness. “Starry Night” was the theme for the reception, with lots of twinkling lights and orbs throughout the tent. Both Kellie and Steven are adventurous people, and slightly non-traditional, as was apparent in many parts of their wedding. They wanted to put their own, unique stamp on things. One such example, and one of Kellie’s favorites, was the “Donut Wall” Kellie and her parents came up with as an alternative to a flower wall. 500 wooden pegs held beautifully iced donuts that spelled out their initials where guests could pose in front of and then eat them on the way out.

resh back from Lake Tahoe, after a couple of years enjoying skiing and the mountains, Finn started a new job at a marketing company in Boston. As fate would have it, Lindsay also worked there and the two noticed each other right away. It took a few lunch dates, after-work drinks, and text messages, but eventually Finn kissed her and they never looked back. Four and a half years later, on a beautiful Indian Summer day in October, at one of their favorite parks in Brookline, Massachusetts, Finn got down on one knee and told Lindsay she was his best friend and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. their vendors eased their fears making them feel special and relaxed throughout the entire day. Lindsay wanted a romantic feeling to the celebration, so she had her bridesmaids wear pale pink, then added some pale peach and whites to the color palette for the decor. The head table was several farm tables placed in a u-shape, with flowing flowers down the center instead of large centerpieces. Because the beauty of the mountains was already stunning, Lindsay focused on simple embellishments, covering the arbor with green and flowers, while guests sat on long wooden benches for the ceremony. Lindsay arrived in style with her father in a blue Thunderbird convertible. A saxophone played “Make You Feel My Love” as the bridesmaids made their way of the aisle, echoing off the mountains. For Lindsay it was both surreal and one of the most beautiful things she had ever heard. They also wrote their own vows, which made the ceremony, which was officiated by Finn's father, very personal and really reflected their love for each other. Before the ceremony, Lindsay and Finn had a “first look”, which although not traditional, was one of their favorite moments. They loved being able to really savor the moment of seeing each other for the first time.

love story Vermont is a place that is very dear to both Finn and Lindsay. Finn grew up there and over the last several years it has become a second home to Lindsay. Plus you can’t beat the beautiful, natural backdrop! The couple wanted to share their favorite spot with Lindsay’s family and all of their friends. It was important that their guests could stay on property and have plenty to do together, since most would be coming from out of town. The Mountain Top Inn & Resort had all of the amenities, and the breathtaking vistas, that they were looking for. Their entire wedding weekend was held on site, from the rehearsal dinner down by the lake, to a Sunday farewell brunch. Their guests enjoyed horseback riding, playing tennis, walking the trails, and even skeet shooting. Not only is the Mountain Top Inn beautiful, but it is practically a “summer camp for adults,” as Lindsay puts it. From s’mores around the fire pit to sipping drinks by the pool—there was something for everyone.

onica and Patrick met as young children-their parents remember him chasing her around and saying he would marry her one day! But Patrick and his parents moved away and they lost touch for twenty-something years. A serendipitous reunion on Christmas found them bonding over their mutual love of skiing and Patrick eventually brought Monica to his family vacation home near Stratton Mountain. Since it was in front of the Church of St. Paul’s in Brookville, New York where Patrick had chased Monica as a young child saying he would marry her, it was of course where he proposed to her. He blindfolded her, claiming he wanted to surprise her with lunch at a fancy restaurant, and led her out of the car and up to a pretty gazebo behind the church. With their close friends in attendance, Patrick got down on one knee and popped the question. Their love of Vermont drew them to the state to search for a wedding venue. On their very first day of searching, they fell in love with Hildene. There was also a St. Paul’s church nearby, which was perfect since they had met as children at their local St. Paul’s in New York. Their one goal when planning their wedding was to share a memorable celebration with the people who mean the world to them, and to be romantic and playful. It was full of handmade touches they put together with their friends and family; golden animal drink stirrers and magnets to hold the escort cards, floral bases for the centerpieces, and watercolored menus and table names.

love story They spent a lot of time putting special meaning into their celebration. From writing their own vows, to preparing a special, choreographed first dance that their guests loved. Their vision for an intimate reception with an elegant, yet fun vibe came together perfectly with Monica working together with their vendors to bring her ideas to life. Some of their favorite details from the day were the top-notch food and drinks showcasing local ingredients, and the gorgeous mountains that created a stunning backdrop. Monica and Patrick's advice for other couples is: “Everyone always talks about how fast a wedding goes by, so why not make the whole weekend a celebration? We hosted a rehearsal dinner and welcome drinks the night before, as well as a brunch, golf outing, and 4th-of-July bonfire party the day after. This gave us all the time we needed to mingle with family and friends, and to simply soak in and appreciate the moment. And while it’s more planning on your part, it’s not too difficult as long as you stay organized.”
