A Picture Perfect Vermont Love Story

Capture the Magic

Basin Harbor Resort & Boat Club, on the shores of Lake Champlain, provides a flawless backdrop for a classic New England wedding. Imagine yourself amidst 700 acres of Vermont’s most beautiful land, creating memories with your family and friends, exchanging your vows, and celebrating as the sun sets over the Adirondacks. Our pristine gardens and lawns, ceremony sites, expansive water views, newly-renovated docks, maritime memorabilia, and charming historical buildings and cottages offer picture-perfect opportunities to capture the magic of your special day.

Your Incredible Weekend

PHOTOS BY AMY BENNETT PHOTOGRAPHY

Welcome your family and friends to the resort on Friday evening with a cocktail cruise. Catch up with loved ones at your lobster bake rehearsal dinner on our North Dock. On Saturday morning, enjoy our signature breakfast buffet at Ardelia’s featuring the endless bounty of Vermont. As you prepare in comfort in one of our beautifully-appointed cottages, your guests can spend the day enjoying all of the activities Basin Harbor has to offer: hiking, biking, kayaking, boating, paddle boarding, lawn games, spa treatments, golfing, tennis, relaxing by the lake, and lounging by the pool. In the afternoon, walk down the aisle at our Wedding Arch, the Orchard Garden, or the Lodge Lawn with breathtaking views of the harbor. Now that you’ve said your vows, it’s time to celebrate! As the sun sets on Lake Champlain, enjoy cocktail hour and dancing through the night at your reception on the Homestead Lawn or in one of our elegant function spaces. Then it’s time for fireworks, a sparkler send-off, and the midnight snacks at your after party at The Red Mill. On Sunday, have a delicious farewell brunch with your family and friends. Reminisce over mimosas about an incredible weekend that no one will ever forget.

The Basin Harbor Commitment

We pride ourselves in getting to know our brides, grooms, and their families. We work with each couple to create a unique wedding experience while staying true to a timeless Vermont aesthetic. Our professional sales and coordination team work with you at every step to help you realize your vision. At Basin Harbor, we’ve been creating family traditions since 1886. We are committed to exceptional service. This is a place like no other: beautiful, peaceful, with a magic all its own. We look forward to sharing it with you. Time to celebrate the good things in life!

ow you wear your hair and make-up depends on your dress, venue and more importantly your comfort level. These are the things you need to take into consideration. Ultimately you want to look like a more beautiful version of yourself and feel confident. No wedding day look is complete without the perfect hair and make-up to complement your personality and your dress. If you’re a bride who doesn't normally wear make-up, your make-up should be applied to look natural with just enough technique to compliment your features for timeless photos. You want to look like a bride and not like your just trying on your dress. If you are wearing a simple yet beautiful dress go ahead and have some fun with your hair and make-up. Talk to your stylist about "perfectly" messy braids or curls, created with

20 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

hair up, down or half up- half down. If you would rather have a smooth polished look you can have an up style that is full of creative twist and curls yet with a clean and polished finish. As for make-up try a brighter lip color or go bold with the perfect red. Your blush can also be brighter and bolder, keeping your eye make-up natural with light touches of beiges, pinks or peaches. If your dress is detailed with folds of material, beautiful beads and or lace, you don't want to compete with the dress by having busy hair and make-up. Adorning yourself with a simple soft hairstyle and natural clean make-up will never be a bad idea. Try a low or side bun keeping a bit of height on top for elegance. You can leave a few wispy pieces to frame and soften your face. Or go for the classic clean pulled back chignon or French twist. The final look is totally chic, and the perfect complement to an ornate wedding dress! vermontbridemagazine.com

Wedding inspiration shoot captures the modern urban couple. The groom is a simple yet refined black tuxedo while the bride wears an elegant white gold color dress . I love the fine detail in the fabric on the upper part of the dress and how it accentuates the beautiful model's figure. It blends modern and traditional. Very elegant dress and beautiful location. Bouquet is a colorful pallet of pinks oranges and yellows.

The Perfect Vermont Wedding Favor If you are having your wedding in Vermont then chances are you have a great fondness for the Green Mountain State and are eager to share it’s beauty and splendor with all of your closest friends and family. A common thread with Vermont weddings is the desire to showcase Vermont made products and, especially, food. No matter where your guests are from they have most likely heard of Vermont maple syrup—a sweet delicacy that conjures images of red, maple leaf covered

hills, stone walls, and rustic barns in bucolic farm fields. It is widely coveted for it’s unique flavor and can be quite hard to find, as well as expensive, once you get outside the boundaries of New England. This is what makes maple syrup the perfect Vermont wedding favor. It is something your guests will both love and are guaranteed to use and enjoy. Give them a piece of Vermont to take home and remember your celebration with every delicious drop.

WEDDED BLISS By: Carmen George

5 REASON COUPLES CHOOSE A MICROWEDDING

Megan & Brian at the Mountain Top Inn & Resort, Chittenden, Vermont

ALL PHOTOS BY CARMEN GEORGE

There are many types of weddings. You can elope or you can have a big wedding with family, friends, neighbors, coworkers and your parent’s friends. The most popular type of wedding these days is the microwedding. A microwedding is a ceremony where you typically have fewer than 30 guests. 1. THEY WANT AN INTIMATE WEDDING CELEBRATION. While not as intimate as an elopement, the mi-

crowedding, with its narrowed guest list, is a wedding only shared with people you are closest too. You eliminate all the people you might feel obligated to invite if you had a larger wedding. Because of its small size, you can spend more time with your guests before and after the ceremony. One couple had their immediate family come to the Mountain Top Inn & Resort (see their ad on page 5) in Chittenden, Vermont for the weekend. They all went sledding the morning of the their wedding. The father of the bride shared with me how much fun they had together. Another couple had only their children at the wedding. They spent the weekend at The Essex Resort & Spa (see their ad on page 14) in Essex, Vermont. They enjoyed spa treatments and wonderful meals. The bride said,, “ One of the greatest things about our small wedding was the fact that we could focus on each other and the kids and no one else.” 2. IT’S EASY TO PLAN. A microwedding can be planned in a month or even a week. It may take more time if you are

marrying on a Saturday in the warmer months since many vendors are booked for larger weddings. You don’t have to decorate large rooms or spend time meeting with lots of vendors. There aren’t as many details. Many wonderful wedding venues around Vermont have rooms for small ceremonies. Carmen George is a Justice of the Peace, florist, and photographer. She has over 25 years of event planning experience and enjoys helping people. She lives in Burlington, Vermont with her husband, daughter and large pretty flower beds. www.officiantvermont.com (see Carmen George ad on pg. 71)

3. IT WON’T BREAK THE BANK. Almost every part of a microwedding is less expensive. You don’t need to rent as big

of a space, feed as many people, decoration as much, hire as many vendors... A rehearsal and rehearsal dinner aren’t needed either. All these costs add up. Everything included a in microwedding cost between $1,000 to $3,500. 4. THERE IS MORE TIME TO INDULGE IN LUXURIES. A microwedding allows you to spend your money on romantic

touches. With a small wedding you can splurge on some things like: venue, flowers, dress, shoes, rings, reception meal, photography, gifts for guests, and the honeymoon.

Some couples rent a house then invite their guests to come stay for the weekend or all the guests rent rooms at a resort where they spend the weekend having fun. Doing things like skiing, snowboarding, hiking, canoeing, or relaxing by a fire making smores.

Alyssa and Lauren rented a house with their families for a weekend in Vermont.

5. THEY CAN BE MUCH LESS STRESSFUL. Saving money and free of the demands of planning, it makes sense that these

simpler wedding are more relaxed. There is less to worry about, less running around, and more time with people you love. If you want to dramatically reduce stress consider a surprise microwedding. Invite guests to a elegant dinner at which you reveal it is actually your wedding! This eliminates all the pre-wedding anxiety and fuss that some couples don’t enjoy. It’s incredibly fun. If you are considering going micro, I recommend you go for it! You can always have a big party to invite others to at a later date.

By: Megan Alissa If you’re wondering what wedding trends are going to be big this year, look no further. Whether planning a wedding yourself or just looking to see what’s next in the wedding world, read on. Long before the wedding, there is an engagement and with that comes an engagement ring. This year is no different in terms of couples continuing the theme of gifting a beautiful symbol to express their love and intention, however there has been a shift in the styles that are being gifted. A variety of non-traditional engagement rings are seeing an uptick in popularity. No longer is the classic diamond engagement ring the only option for the “forever ring”. Nowadays, many couples are opting for a variety of new and old designs featuring beautiful gemstones. Emeralds, Sapphires Aquamarines and Rubies are among some of the most popular precious gems that are making their way into beautiful settings for the newly engaged. Perhaps most recently reintroduced to pop culture by Kate Middleton’s non diamond engagement ring, this theme seems to have luckily trickled down to the general public. A beautiful, heirloom engagement ring need not follow suite with what has been typical in past. Couples today are finally celebrating and gifting rings in array of vibrant hues. inspiration Another hot trend this season is one that is good for all of us, that is to say, green themes are in! With climate change a very real and daunting reality, many couples and vendors are transitioning toward greener options. Sustainable and/or eco friendly possibilities are becoming more prevalent and indeed, so too is the demand. Everything from digital or recycled paper invitations produced with soy based inks, repurposed/rented reception decor to locally sourced food and wedding favor options, living green now extends toward wedding planning as well. Similarly, we will be seeing a lot of literal greenery this season. Botanical inspired designs and elements will grace weddings of all kinds in the coming year. Integrating natural themes through the inclusion of lush greenery, organic inspired uplighting and outdoor receptions are just a few of the ways we will see nature taking center stage. It’s no surprise (and perhaps a further indication of the collective unconscious) the Pantone color of the year is “Greenery”. As such, this green theme is likely to also affect many couple’s wedding palettes. We will be seeing a great variety of greens (think sage, emerald, evergreen and kelly among others) being integrated into the wedding color schemes.

The days of having to choose one tone and stick to it are finally over. Millennials are notorious for loving mashups and this theme clearly translates as far as weddings are concerned. Mixed metallics (think various tones of gold, brass, copper) will be woven together in new, beautiful and unique ways. Whether combining complimentary tones as part of the wedding palette, accessories, bridesmaids attire or reception decor, weddings in the next year are sure to be gilded in a stunningly fresh fashion.

inspiration As the old proverb goes, “what goes around comes around”. So true in many areas of life including weddings and this year is no different. In the coming season we will be seeing old world patterns and styles breathing new life. Antique chinoiserie china patterns are being integrated in new ways gracing stationary and wedding cakes alike. Baroque elements are being reborn as delicate embellishments on wedding gowns and accessories. Simple, natural and flowing hairstyles reminiscent of those popularized during the art nouveau movement are gaining momentum. Weave a little history into your wedding and you won’t regret it.

While so many of the themes that are trending now are certainly lovely, one would hope that one in particular will continue to expand and indeed, stand the test of time. With more couples and vendors making mindful, environmentally conscious decisions, weddings will undoubtedly look and feel different than those in past. This necessary shift is something we can each incorporate in our own way. Even making small choices to plan a “greener” wedding, will collectively have a huge impact. Whether embracing a literal or figurative “green” wedding, with so many gorgeous, fresh themes gaining popularity, this next phase of weddings is certain to be not only sustainable but stunning as well.

WEDDING OVERVIEW By Dreamlove Photography

C

ristina and Alan had the epitome of what we would call a rustic and romantic wedding in Stowe, Vermont. They had an outdoor ceremony, followed by an herb-themed tented reception at the Topnotch Resort. French linen napkins were wrapped with sprigs of fresh rosemary and burlap at each place setting, and Blomma Flicka created some amazing champagne colored floral arrangements with sage leaves that filled rustic wooden boxes as centerpieces. Cristina and Alan’s chairs were adorned with calligraphy style cutout wooden signs along with bunches of aromatic thyme. Simple birch tree sections were used to hold escort cards at the head table, and lighted marquis letters added some warmth to the guest book area. Friends and family were very important to Cristina and Alan, and they incorporated some of those closest to them into the day in a very unique way. Instead of the traditional wedding party, these two had several couples stand up to offer marriage advice throughout the ceremony. Cristina wore an amazing blush pink dress by Vera Wang, and after the ceremony she traded in her high heels for cowboy boots. She and Alan were happy to wander the property for bride and groom portraitsthrough wildflower fields, forest paths and even perching on rocks along the edge of a stream lined with rock cairns!?

real wedding From the bride - “our favorite part about the day was the ceremony, and having our closest friends who are married come up and give us advice on a happy marriage. We also loved the after-party, when everything else was said and done and, I could just relax and dance the night away with everyone I love in my cowboy boots! My most useful bit of advice to bride's planning an outdoor wedding: In case its really hot, make sure you either pick a shady spot for your ceremony or have some fans or cool beverages available for your guests. Also, make sure you have a backup rain location that you would be happy with in the worst case."

WEDDING OVERVIEW By Laura Lee Photography

N

early 11 years... that’s how long Ashley and Joe have been best friends—and eight of those years have been leading up to their unbelievably incredible mountaintop wedding at Sugarbush Resort in Vermont.

Ashley and Joe met at freshman orientation at Boston University in the summer of 2006. After being friends for three years, enjoying adventures on the same snowboard and ski club team together in college, they started dating in 2009. Fast forward to last summer when Joe proposed on the top of Mt. Mousilauke in New Hampshire when they were on a backpacking trip! After Joe proposed, they decided to camp out that night to enjoy the moment. We were blessed with not just amazing summer weather and temperatures of 80 degrees but we also got the incredible beauty of the fall foliage in Vermont. We truly had the best of both worlds! I don't think I could picture a better ceremony location than a chairlift bringing you to a meadow overlooking a mountain range.

After Ashley got in her dress, put her sneakers on and had a joyous first look with her dad, we hopped in the car to drive to the first look location, which was a riverbed nearby where Joe would be waiting. Ashley practically ran to the river, and was a bride after my own heart as she hopped down the muddy embankment, threw her dress in the dirt and ran towards her handsome groom. It was THE SWEETEST. After the first look, we hiked (yes in a wedding dress) down a path that led to an INCREDIBLE gorge with waterfalls. From there, we went back to the bridal suite where the girls were finishing their prep. We took some fun pictures with them, and once everyone was dressed we headed up to Gadd Peak, (the highest lift at Sugarbush) for wedding party pictures and some more portraits! These were seriously INCREDIBLE.

Ashley and Joe shared tearful vows and the sun shined on them with a blue sky above. After the ceremony, we took family formals looking up the mountain, and then took the lift back down for the most wonderful and delicious cocktail hour you can imagine. Guests enjoyed food, fire and cornhole before being transitioned into the reception hall (which was beautiful decorated and had the most wonderful natural light and tall windows!) The party got started after dinner and the dance floor didn’t stop all night. We capped off with Don’t Stop Believin’ and then the guests and everyone was brought outside for the grand finale. YUP, FIREWORKS. LITERALLY A GRAND FINALE. Everyone enjoyed a full on fireworks show over the mountain, and these are some of my favorite pictures of the night!

How and where did you meet?

Erich and I met at the Univzersity of Vermont, where we both completed our undergraduate degrees.

What was the proposal like?

Erich and I have the sawme birthday (just one year apart) and to celebrate, we took a trip to Vermont for the weekend with our friends. We took a walk through Shelburne Farms at sunset, and he proposed in front of the Inn overlooking Lake Champlain. Our friends had hidden champagne and glasses in their backpacks, and we toasted as the sun went down. We celebrated with dinner at Hen of the Wood in downtown Burlington.

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?

Vermont seemed like the obvious choice for us, since it’s where we met, fell in love, and got engaged. Vermont is such a special place for us, and it was wonderful to have all of our family and friends here to celebrate.

How did you choose your venue?

Shelburne Farms was the place we got engaged and we immediately saw it as a potential location for our wedding. Once we toured the Coach Barn and the surrounding lawn, no other venue could live up to it.

real wedding What was your theme/color palette?

Our wedding had a very timeless and romantic feel, with lots of candles, garlands of greenery draped on the tables and above the archway of the Coach Barn. The color palate included tones of gray, included in the bridesmaids dresses and table linens, creamy whites in the bouquet and other florals, lots of greenery, as well as dark blues in the men’s suits.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding?

One of my favorite details of the wedding were the dinner menus. My mom created them for me, by hand, based on an inspiration picture I found online. I really love that she created it just for us.

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?

The wedding had an elegance to it, while still being relaxed and intimate. We were surrounded by our closest friends and family, and I think that made everything feel special. I think that the songs we selected for our first dance and for the ceremony really made these moments more personal. I still get emotional when I hear the song I walked down the aisle to!

What were some of your favorite moments?

The ceremony was so special and easily one of the best parts of the day. The sun was getting low in the sky, the light was golden, and time seemed to stand still while we took our vows. We also took a series of photos by the lake as the sun went down, which gave us a chance to spend some moments together away from everyone, which was really special.

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?

My advice would be to not worry too much about the small things. Everything comes together in the end, and the most important thing it to make the day meaningful to the two of you.

Vermont Bride was incredibly helpful in our search for local Vermont vendors. After researching dozens and dozens of venues across New England, I found our wedding venue through a blog post on their website, and instantly fell in love with the snowy hills.

How and where did you meet?

We met in New York City as freshman at New York University, while living in the same dorm building. What started off as fun adventures around the city with our friends, led to ice skating dates, cross country visits, and global trips while studying abroad.

What was the proposal like?

Adrian proposed at Rachel’s favorite park in New York City, under a stone bridge. Before he proposed, we slow danced under the bridge to Ed Sheeran’s song “Perfect”, which was later our first dance song. After he proposed with a sweet speech, Adrian surprised Rachel by bringing out her parents, who he had arranged to come in for the weekend as a surprise. It was also the day before Rachel’s birthday, so it was a weekend full of happy celebrations!

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?

Rachel’s favorite movie growing up was White Christmas, and as the characters say, “It must be beautiful in Vermont this time of year, all that snow”. We both love the mountains, snow, and Christmas, so it was inevitable that we’d end up with a Christmas wedding in Vermont! We could not picture a more beautiful or fitting place to get married.

How did you choose your venue?

RESEARCH. Lots and lots of research. We wanted a place where our families could stay on property with us and where there would be lots of winter activities and snow. Mountain Top Inn & Resort was the perfect balance of intimate andpersonal, with enough lodging and space for everyone to celebrate with us. We liked that the barn was cozy and rustic, while having modern facilities (heating) to keep everyone comfortable.

What was your theme/color palette?

We wanted to have a rustic, yet elegant Christmas wedding, so we went with a palette of burgundy, brown, cream, and evergreen. The decorations were kept pretty simple; lush evergreen garlands, red berries, pinecones, and snowflakes decorated the tables.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding?

The night before the wedding, we went sledding with our wedding party in the dark and it was a blast! It was so fun to relax with our friends before the big day, and to make some more icy cold memories with them. This was especially meaningful, as it was too cold the next day during the reception to go sledding. 114 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?

For us, it was very important that the wedding be cozy and intimate. We kept the guest list to family and only a few close friends, as both of us wanted to have more time celebrating with our loved ones and each other. We also wanted to have a fun snowy wedding, with a greater emphasis on sledding and snowball fights, than dancing.

What were some of your favorite moments?

The morning of our wedding it was -16 degrees! Although we had to move our ceremony indoors, because of the frostbite warning, we still did all of our wedding photos outside in the snow. It was unbelievably cold, yet so fun huddling together for pictures in the beautiful snowy hills. It was a unique experience, and it made our photos together even more meaningful.

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?

Keep in mind what your priorities are for the wedding, and don’t get caught up in other people’s vision of what it should look like. At the end of the day, it’s about celebrating you and your marriage, not anyone else.

How and where did you meet?

We both grew up in the same small town in Rhode Island in the same circle of friends but never made a direct connection until 2011. We ran into each other at a mutual friend’s house where a quick hello turned into a night’s long conversation.

What was the proposal like?

Every year on December 24th, Christopher’s mother hosts a party to celebrate the holidays as well as Christopher’s birthday (which is also Dec. 24th). On this day in 2014, Christopher told Rebecca he had a present for her and it was in the form of a slide show. He asked if he could show it on the big television while everyone was still at the party. Rebecca agreed, and then started a 5 minute slide show of pictures from the pwwrevious three years together. Because Christopher knows how sentimental Rebecca is, he had two of Rebecca’s favorite songs playing one after another during the slideshow, the first being “All of Me” by John Legend and then “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran. When the slideshow reached its final photo, it was a picture of us from our 2013 Disney World vacation, we were wearing the Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse Bride and Groom Ears. At the bottom of the photo it read, “Mr. and Mrs. Raposa?” It took a second for Rebecca to realize what was going on, and by the time she did Chris was kneeling down on one knee with a ring in his hand. She said yes, and the rest was history!

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?

The peaceful mountain views and tranquility found in Vermont’s woods is second to no other destination. Clean crisp air, a big blue sky, all while being surrounded in mother nature’s purest beauty was how we knew our love had to be confessed. How did you choose your venue?

As we started looking at different venues, we quickly realized we wanted our wedding to be a weekend long celebration rather than just one day. The best way to do this was to have a destination wedding at a place that offered plenty of amenities and outdoor adventures. When we went for our first visit to the Mountain Top Inn & Resort, we fell in love with the foliage, the crisp Vermont air, amazing views, and all of their seasonal resort activities. We even loved all of the quaint towns we stopped in along the way (Woodstock and Quechee were our favorites!) It was off the beaten path but held such a beautiful landscape and scenery that it just felt so right to be there.

What was your theme/color palette?

A rustic charm with an off white and blue complimenting colors that blended nice with all the wood accents.

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple It showed our love for mother nature, tranquility, and a beautiful rustic charm.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding?

We would have to say the environment/atmosphere, it was incredible. Whether it was the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, or reception – the views and vibe always felt so natural and beautiful. To be able to just stare out into the massive lake or never ending woods, you could literally feel the stresses and anxiety leave your body with an overwhelming sense of joy setting in.

What were some of your favorite moments?

real wedding

The rehearsal dinner down at the lake front pavilion was incredible We did a summer themed BBQ surrounded with lawn games, camp fires, and AMAZING lakeside views during sunset. It really was huge kick off for the weekend and set the tone for family and friends that an incredible weekend was underway.

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?

Don’t rush, take your time and ask plenty of questions. Always make the decision that works for the both of you. Think big picture and don’t get caught up in the little details. Enjoy the planning process because it will become stressful at certain points which is okay. Be sure to hit your deadlines and relax, the excitement and nervousness will kick in just days before and you’ll find comfort in knowing everything is already done, you just need to show up.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US YOUR FAVORITE OR MOST MEMORABLE CAKE OR DESSERT THAT YOU CREATED FOR A WEDDING? My favorite occasion was a local wedding where I was asked to do a "dessert buffet" for a large wedding. It consisted of a two-tiered cake, four varieties of mini cupcakes, mini maple cheesecakes, mini cream cheese brownies and ten pies(five flavors). It was a lot of fun and made such a beautiful display with lots of variety for the bride and groom and their guests. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES WHO ARE PLANNING WHAT CAKE OR DESSERTS TO OFFER AT THEIR RECEPTION? I always tell my couples to go with whatever moves them! There are no "rules" for wedding desserts and the sky is the limit so follow your taste buds. I've done weddings that have run the gamut of variety in dessert choices to just a simple tiered cake. We can customize your wedding desserts to suit you and your guests. The sky is the limit..

How and where did you meet?

We met at work. We were both medical assistants in Boston. Patrick actually interviewed me for the job and then we became close while working in the same department.

What was the proposal like?

I actually ruined it, but it was still very sweet! He planned on recreating our first date, which was dinner and then going to this nearby park on a hill that was really pretty at night, which was where he was planning to propose. I didn’t catch on and didn’t want to go out that night. He was so nervous and couldn’t wait any longer so he ended up proposing right there in the living room!

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?

I’m originally from Vermont and through visiting with me Patrick fell in love with Vermont. The best time for us to have our wedding was in December, and where better to have it that time of year?!

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?

It was very simple. We didn’t do much décor, the surroundings were already naturally beautiful, and then we spent the most money making sure we had good food, drinks and music which are the things we love to enjoy together regularly.

From the bride:

We wanted a wedding style that combined our love of the water and a (relatively) low key vibe (and a far cry from our hectic, intense NYC life). We weren't looking to make any huge, expensive statements, but did want the wedding to feel special and unique–memorable! Guests were our first priority. We thought a lot about, if we were guests, what would we remember, what would make us look back and say THAT WEDDING WAS AMAZING?... so that was a common thread in all the elements of our rustic wedding. We had a canoe full of beer for the ceremony, a stocked welcome bag...with a deer on the bag itself, a creative water-color program, raw bar, custom cocktails, etc.

Advice for future brides would be put your guests first. If they're having fun - you will have fun and be a lot less

stressed. Put your money toward music, food and alcohol. Lots of alcohol. If something feels special and important to you, run with it! People DO notice the special and unique touches you spend so much time on, and they will tell you how much they love them (which is great, since you will be too busy basking in the moment to notice a single thing). My favorite was when our band Rubix Kube pulled Alex and I on stage for their encore final song and had everyone at the wedding sing "Don't Stop Believing" to us, and then we crowd surfed. People always say you "peak" at your wedding, and if that wasn't a life peak, I don't know what will be, unless I die and become Taylor Swift.

My other favorite moment was waiting with my Uncle in the barn as he was about to walk me down the aisle. We had "Better Days" by Bruce Springsteen playing as the bridesmaids walked in, and I could see just a few heads straining to catch a glimpse of us. Lots of butterflies and excitement as we turned the corner and I saw all these people who mean so much to Alex and I, all looking so excited and happy for us. My husband's favorite moment was saying our vows (who would have guessed??). We wrote them ourselves and surprised each other...a good mix of heartfelt, emotional and funny. Alex's opening line was "So, there are a lot of people here today. But you were all invited, so I guess that's good....". Very "him", and turned all the tears I induced during my vows into laughter!

How and where did you meet?: We met in Maine, at Colby College in 2007. Our friend and wedding officiant,

Mike, introduced us during Nick’s freshman and Sarena’s sophomore year. We quickly became best friends-- pretending to be “just friends” for two years-- until finally, to the relief of nearly everyone around us, we officially started dating in 2010.

What was the proposal like?: We were in Upstate New York at the house Sarena’s parents’ built, which the family

lovingly calls “Merrywood Manor.” To Sarena’s surprise, Nick asked her to take an early morning walk around the property — a very bold move before she’d had her morning coffee. Ending up at the pond towards the rear of the property, Nick, an avid reader, read to Sarena the Kurt Vonnegut short story “Long Walk to Forever,” replacing the characters’ names with Nick and Sarena. At the end of the story, Nick asked Sarena if she would go on the long walk to forever with him and opened a ring box full of flowers (in lieu of an engagement ring). Sarena asked Nick if he would marry her. We both said yes!

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding? We knew we wanted to get married in an idyllic setting.

Nick grew up in Vermont and his family still lives there, so we spend a lot of time in the Green Mountain State. Even though it’s very different from her native New York City, Sarena has fallen in love with Vermont over the years. How could she not? We wanted to share with friends and family this special place in our relationship, and Memorial Day Weekend in Vermont did not disappoint!

How did you choose your venue? The Old Lantern Inn & Barn ended up being the perfect

venue for us. The timeless barn set among greenery and overlooking the lake has a quintessential Vermont feel. Lisa, Roland, and Julie took care of so many of the items that make up the planning process and wedding day, which made it easy putting our special day together while living in New York.

What was your theme/color palette? We chose a palette of blues and purples, especially royal blue and lavender.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding? How do we just choose one?! Among our many “favorites,” two would be the words “Love and Happiness” above our wedding date and names that two of our friends drew on a chalkboard at The Old Lantern, and having all guests seated in a large circle around us during the ceremony. We began the ceremony by walking around the circle together and it was the perfect way to start our wedding!

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple? We wanted our

wedding to reflect the love and joy we have in our relationship, and our gratitude for the community of people who surround us with love every day. We made intentional decisions every step of the planning process to make sure the environment was inclusive and inviting. Great food, lots of laughter, pie, awesome music, and non-stop dancing in beautiful Vermont was the perfect way to celebrate with our favorite people!

What were some of your favorite moments? There are so many! It was incredibly special to

walk around the circle of family and friends before standing under the Chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy) at our ceremony. Seeing all of our friends in blue (our unofficial wedding party), hearing their beautiful blessings, and having all the help and support from our incredible community of family and friends come to life – from baking 40 pies to cutting down trees behind Nick’s parents’ house to build our Chuppah from scratch – made it such a memorable day. To the surprise of Nick and most of our wedding guests, Sarena sang a beautiful rendition of the Etta James song “At Last” that also qualifies as one of our favorite memories from that day!

real wedding What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?

• Take people up on their offers of help. It is a gift to others to let them help you! • There are many details to keep track of and it can feel overwhelming. Select a “worrying cut-off time”—a time a few days before the wedding when you can let go of the details and begin immersing yourself in the joy of the experience! • Focus on the marriage and relationship—consider the values of your relationship and try to let the wedding reflect who you are as a couple. • Examine traditions and determine if they align with your values and vision. If they don’t, give yourself permission to try something new or adapt ritual to better reflect you and your relationship! • Be present; the day goes by so quickly! Step back a few times during the night to take mental snapshots. • Surround yourself with amazing vendors who you trust, have good energy, and make you feel confident and relaxed. • Plan something for after the wedding—a honeymoon or just a special dinner for the two of you. The post-wedding blues can be very real, so it’s nice to have something else to look forward to when all of your guests leave. • Have fun!

How and where did you meet?

This is a 21st century story about a “like”, that led to a “poke”, and culminated in a dinner. Actually, the roots to this story are much deeper, and started growing many years before that fated date, and long before social networks existed. We met in high school – 17 ½ years ago – at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. We spent two years (Wills was two years ahead) aimlessly walking Andover paths, sliding doors that must have passed each other hundreds of times. We had friends in common, always ate in “lower right”, and lived at either ends of Rabbit Pond. But short of a few awkward high school glances, we never spoke a word. Years later, our paths crossed again, on a Hudson-bound train bound for our respective colleges. We spoke out first words, nervous and blushing, but it was still too early. It would take many years of experience and exploration for the stars to align and our origins story to come full circle. Additionally, during that time, Riley (our mini Australian Shepherd) was born… and she would play a KEY role in convincing Abby to give Wills a chance! Fast forward three quick years and we were walking down the aisle!

What was the proposal like?

The world’s most thoughtful, memorable, everything-and-more surprise! I’ll preface the story by saying that I have a tendency to be hyper aware of everything going on around me, but I can honestly say I was completely caught off-guard when Wills popped the question. We decided to head north to Ogunquit, Maine to visit my parents and sibling, who live close by, the weekend of May 6th – 8th, 2016. Every time we are there, Wills, Riley and I walk the Marginal Way, an exquisite cliff walk that edges the Atlantic. So –as always – we decided to go for a pre-dinner walk on Saturday. We were a little more than halfway through our walk when the cloud rolled in and it got a bit misty – there wasn’t a soul in sight.

real wedding Wills walked off the path a bit, where there was a bench nestled under a tree – Riley was trailing close behind him, per usual. He bent down – with his back facing me – so naturally I assumed he was tying his shoe… a normal assumption from someone who had zero clue what was about to go down. The mist turned into a brisk sprinkle and since umbrella’s and I don’t get along, I began to walk towards Wills to shelter myself from the rain until he was ready to make moves. As I approached, he quickly pivoted towards me – smiling from ear to ear, excited with a pinch of nervousness. He was holding a small black box with the world’s most stunning, mindblowing ring. Despite the insane beauty of the ring in front of me, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. At that moment, I can honestly say I had an ‘out-of-body’ experience. The combination of extreme happiness and shock put me in a trance. I believe I asked, “Where’s Ashton?” because I thought I was being Punk’d – which, for the record, Wills would never, ever do – I was just completely, 110% surprised, in the best way possible. Wills had to say my name three or four times to snap me out of my hypnosis and as soon as he did, I immediately said, “YES!” as the tears and rain dripped down my face. We kissed, hugged, cried, laughed and, of course, called our parents. We ran to the car, drenched and completely elated. As we sat in the car, overlooking the ocean, we laughed like little kid and took a moment to relish in the moment. We messaged and called some of our family and closest friends before getting dinner with family at our favorite local restaurant, where they surprised us with balloons and decorations. Let’s just say Wills’ proposal exceeded my wildest dreams… by a {very} long shot.

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?

When we first started planning, we had a couple of locations in mind however we quickly decided on Vermont. We both adore Vermont, in general – the fresh air, beauty year-round, endless adventures, and much more – we knew it was the perfect place. We had been to dozens of beautiful and special weddings and, without knowing, had each catalogued particular elements and decisions that

real wedding

we loved. We, of course, wanted our wedding to include details that were authentic and personal to us and our journey. We wanted to honor our parents and families as we were so excited to come together as one. Wills grew up ski racing – among a plethora of sports and activities. His parents, Mada & Bill, owned a condo in Killington, Vermont, where they would spend almost every weekend during ski season. Every Friday afternoon, Mada & Bill would pick Wills up at from school (in NYC) and drive the 5+ hours to Killington and return to NYC Sunday night. I thought about their trips every time Wills and I drove to the area and each time, was in awe that his parents made that same drive – usually in awful conditions, in the dark of the night – every weekend for months, year after year, so Wills could do what he loved. Don’t get me wrong… I knew, even before I met Mada & Bill, that they were incredible parents. Throughout the planning process, we continuously reminisced about all the ‘little’ examples of big things our parents did for us over the past 32+ years – and still, to this day. From driving to ski races or hockey games every weekend to acting as our biggest cheerleaders during the good times and our rocks during the difficult times and providing us with the ability to have the wedding of our dreams – our parents are everything to us and true role models for us to live up to. It was clear – very early on – that we shared the same values when it came to family. Our family is the most important thing in our lives – always have been and always will be. We were both blessed with incredibly loving, supportive, selfless, and generous parents F: facebook.com/vermontbridemagazine | P: pinterest.com/vermontbride | T: @vermontbride | I: instagram.com/vermontbride

and we wanted our wedding to reflect the love and admiration we have for them. To this day, our parents show us true love in its rarest form – what it feels like and how it can extend beyond life’s obstacles and challenges. Without our families – parents, siblings, aunts & uncles, grandparents, cousins, etc., we would be nowhere near the people we are today and the people we are working on becoming. Our wedding was, of course, a celebration of our union as husband and wife but also a celebration of the love that surrounds us every day through our family and friends. We wanted every single guest to feel our appreciation and know just how lucky we feel to have each and every one of them in our lives.

How did you choose your venue?

We wanted to be in a beautiful place where there was the option to spend time outside. Ideally, we wanted to find a venue that had the space and ability to accommodate all of the weekend’s events (Welcome BBQ, Ceremony, Cocktail Hour and Reception) – creating a wedding home-base and camp-like environment where everyone could congregate, play lawn games, explore, and meet up without having to drive from place to place all weekend. 162 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

Riverside Farm was the first venue we visited. It is located in Pittsfield, Vermont – roughly 10 miles from Killington. It is the HQ for Spartan Races as well as Joe De Sena’s family home, founder and CEO of Spartan Inc. One of Wills’ closest friends had worked there and informed us that it was also a wedding venue – depending on availability, of course. Riverside Farm had everything – and more – that we needed to create our dream wedding including six incredible restored barns, over 700 acres, and much, much more. When we first toured the venue in June 2016, it was as if we were walking into a post card…it didn’t even seem real. It was truly breathtaking – every single detail – and we both knew it was perfect within seconds. The availability was extremely limited – especially since we wanted to get married in September – but we didn’t sign off right away as we felt it was important to see what else was out there. We visited a handful of venues in the following weeks but wherever we went, we compared every detail to Riverside Farm. After discussing our options and pro, con pro-ing, we committed to Riverside Farm and never looked back. We were able to have all of the weekend’s events on-site, setup lawn games for guests to enjoy throughout the weekend, offer a handful of lodging options within 10 miles, provide transportation to/from accommodations and Riverside Farm all weekend, etc. The Riverside Farm team, especially our wedding coordinator (aka wedding wizard), Kim, went above and beyond to make sure we, our family and every single guest had an unforgettable weekend. She was always a step ahead and was adamant that we didn’t lift a finger all weekend. She, the Riverside Farm team and all of our vendors wanted us and our guests to take it all in as it would, sadly, be over before we knew it.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding?

Favorite detail? I can’t even attempt to pick just one! It was such a magical weekend from start to finish. The venue (!!!!), the personal details and décor scattered throughout the weekend, seeing our mini Aussies, Riley (our flower girl) and Wills’ parent’s dog, Atilla (our ring bearer) walk down the aisle, seeing the 200 vintage bandanas – that took me a year to find – attached to escort cards hanging on both sides of the bridge leading into the Brown Barn, seeing everything we had planned come to life, the homemade donut wall & ice cream bar, the wedding party in their personalized starter jackets, the photo booth…and so much more!

How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?

First and foremost, we wanted it to be fun, inclusive and activity-filled but also relaxing for those who didn’t want to go non-stop. Since we had guests traveling near and far to be there for our special day, we really wanted everyone to enjoy their time in this beautiful location. 164 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

real wedding Our wedding coordinator from Riverside Farm, Kim, was incredibly helpful in the 6-8 weeks leading up to our wedding and on our wedding weekend however we didn’t have a full-time wedding planner, so a majority of the details and decisions were made by us with the help of our parents, my sister (MOH), our vendors and a handful of friends. They were all willing and eager to help whenever and wherever possible. Their support, advice and suggestions were truly invaluable. Throughout the planning process and during our wedding weekend, we were continuously reminded how amazing our family and friends are. We felt complete seeing everyone smiling, laughing, dancing and having fun throughout the weekend as that is what it was all about for us!

What were some of your favorite moments?

The entire weekend! Putting a ring on it in front of our incredible family and friends. The most special, unforgettable toasts from Wills’ parents, Bill & Mada, my parents, Steve & Kate, my sister & MOH, Lindsey, Wills’ best man, Ben, my best friends, Steph & Alex, my cousins, Maddie & Charlotte, and Wills’ friend and business partner, Andy. They were all so special, unique and heartfelt – and we will never forget them. Sitting around the bonfire after the Welcome BBQ, making s’mores. Laughing, getting our hair and makeup done and relaxing with the girls on Saturday morning. Walking down the aisle with my dad. Seeing Wills walking down the aisle with his dad, his mom walking down the aisle with her sister/Wills’ aunt, Tina, and my mom walking down the aisle with my younger brother, Ben. Reciting our own vows and having one of our best friends as our officiant. The magical décor – everywhere you looked. Our first dance to Adele’s ‘One & Only’. The jam-packed dance floor surrounding the insanely talented Soul Rebels. The delicious food and drinks. The constant support from all of our incredible and extremely talented vendors. Watching our family and friends smiling and laughing. Waking up Sunday – MARRIED! I really could go on forever…

What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?

I think it is very important to keep the guest experience in mind in every decision you make as you want everyone to enjoy themselves. I think it is important to decide whether or not you want to have professional photographs taken on Friday night as well as Saturday. We know things can get expensive but try and list your top 5 priorities before you start planning and make sure you incorporate those things into your wedding, in whatever capacity possible. I previously mentioned, we were incredibly lucky to work with the most talented, thoughtful and supportive vendors – I have kept in touch and become friends with many of them. One of my best friends, Rosie, founded Wilde Paper, and designed and created our save the dates, invites, and day-of paper and collateral, 166 | Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK

which gave us an excuse to spend time together and become even closer through the process. I would recommend any and all of our vendors to anyone – no doubt in my mind. But in all honesty, I realized how crucial it was to trust and feel comfortable and at ease with everyone we were working with as you have to be vocal but also let go of some of the responsibility and trust the professionals. The toasts and speeches on both Friday and Saturday night were so special and we are so grateful to have had the most remarkable videographer capturing the big day. If you have a videographer or don’t have a videographer, I would definitely suggest asking your MOH or best man – or someone you feel comfortable asking – record the speeches (on their phones – nothing fancy!) so you can enjoy them again and again. One piece of advice we received over and over (and we made sure to take) was to make sure you take time (as much as possible) to soak it all in as the day and weekend will truly fly by. Lastly, have fun and enjoy every moment!

How and where did you meet?

We met at a dinner party held by one of our college friends. I was getting ready to graduate and move back to vermont while kevin still had one year left at school. One of closest friends Brianna invited us over knowing she wanted us to meet before i moved back.

Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?

Kevin is born and raised in Florida and I wanted to be able to show his family and our friends from florida how beautiful vermont is in the winter. You always see wedding photos from vermont in the summer/fall , I wanted to show off one of Vermont’s most beautiful seasons.

What was your theme/color palette? Gray, Green

What was your favorite detail from your wedding?

I actually had 2 ! The wedding favors of course which were Little maple syrup bottles from my families sugar bush. My brother was deployed over seas and was unable to attend in person. My sister in law the morning of the wedding opened her email to find a video message from my brother who wanted to surprise us with a congratulations during the reception. Needless to say there wasn't a dry eye in the building.

What were some of your favorite moments?

I had some concerns leading up to the wedding, will I really get that perfect snowy day or would it be a muddy wedding that all of us vermonts are used to seeing. There really wasn't much snow leading up to the wedding day and from my house in sunny florida i hopped vemront would get hit with a big storm. There was enough snow on the ground to make the venue look beautiful but deep down I wanted more, snow to fall while we were getting married. Waking up on the big day , a very gusty day to say the least but the snow was falling. It snowed the entire day and into the night. We were able to take our favorite picture , just the 2 of us outside with the snow falling.

Being a Bride that had to plan from out of state, I used Vermont Bride LOOKBOOK issues. They have great resources and pictures to start to put everything together. It gave me a way to envision what our big day would look like. The day of the wedding hand everything over to your wedding planner or site coordinator, its your big day‌Enjoy it !

CLASSIC CONSORT classicconsort.com | 802-849-6900 in business for 28 years

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS? Classic Consort has been organizing and playing music for weddings since 1990. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A MUSICIAN AND FORM CLASSIC CONSORT? I decided to become a professional musician because I wanted to play my instrument as much as possible. Classic Consort grew out of my desire to organize wedding music as a collaboration with the bride and groom. I wanted to offer guidance when needed so the overall product would be appropriate and a joy to all involved. And I wanted to be there at the weddings, performing and making sure everything went as planned.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT PERFORMING FOR WEDDINGS? I love being part of joyous occasions, and expressing that joy in the music we play. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR COUPLES WHEN PLANNING THEIR CEREMONY MUSIC? I would advise couples to seek counsel from a professional musician when planning their wedding music. For example, some music works well as a processional but may be too solemn for the recessional. And it's important to save the most declamatory, or poignant music for the entrance of the bride.

WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE OR UNIQUE PIECE YOU HAVE PERFORMED FOR A WEDDING? The most memorable piece of music we have performed at a wedding is "Gabriel's Oboe" from the film The Mission (music composed by Ennio Morricone). It is powerful and very beautiful. A bride wanted it for her processional. We now use it for concerts as well.
