Karen Sturtevant Vermont Bride Editor-In-Chief

M

y daughter is now in her early twenties (where did that time go?). When she was little, one of our favorite actives was reading stories—everything from Cat in the Hat rhymes to adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood and later to Harry Potter and his band of wizard friends. The point was not only to appreciate the narration, but enjoy the experience of sharing the story and spending time with each other. Although the internet may offer endless avenues of information (true, false and everything inbetween) causing rumors of paper literature to go the way of the horse and buggy, few things compare to reading and learning from printed material, like this hot-off-the-press Vermont Bride. This issue is dripping with love. We are bursting with eight incredible stories combined with visually stunning photographs from real Vermont celebrations. Meet our brides and grooms, (and Huckleberry) and read their tales of romance. Notice the tints and tones that our couples chose for flowers, favors and fun, and check out the Color Palette features—gorgeous combinations for any season. Some brides love A-line dresses, the daring may go for a mermaid style while the ball gown has made its reputation as a princess-in-the-making choice. Consider a blush-colored gown and wow your guests with surprise. If Art Deco makes you happy, you’ll love the gowns featured by iconic Hollywood stars from bygone days. Classic beauty never goes out of style. Vermont summers seem too short so we need to savor every sunshine ray, each fresh picked strawberry and colorful stem of wildflower. To set the scene, we’ve featured a Garden Tea Party, Farm Fresh Flowers, and a lakeside location where Love Sets Sail. Romantic and real. Pour a glass of iced-tea, add a sprig of mint and find a quiet summer secret garden to explore the possibilities of your wedding. As much as we love our ‘old fashioned’ paper magazine we do embrace the opportunity to reach more people on-line and offer our Lookbook (VermontBrideMagazine.com/Lookbook)— real wedding-inspired collections. Whatever your preference, paper, plastic or electronic, we thank you for choosing Vermont Bride to be your wedding source.

Cheers!

CELEBRATION RENTALS celebrateinvermont.com | 802-247-0002 in business for over 30 years

HOW LONG HAS CELEBRATION RENTALS BEEN IN BUSINESS?

Celebration Rentals has more than 30 years of experience helping customers with their event rentals, from a 300 person wedding to an intimate dinner party of 10. WHAT TYPES OF SUPPLIES AND SERVICES DOES CELEBRATION RENTALS OFFER?

We offer an extensive inventory of items, as well as the knowledge and experience to guide customers on their way. From tents, tables and chairs, down to the smaller details like plates, glassware and table settings. We do our best provide whatever a customer may need to make their event effortless and memorable. TELL US ABOUT A FAVORITE OR MEMORABLE WEDDING THAT YOU WERE INVOLVED WITH.

I really don’t have a favorite. All of them are special in their own way. From the small intimate gatherings, to the larger weddings and celebrations. The end result is always the same. That familiar yet uniquely special smile or tone in their voice that comes when you have helped them make their dream of that special day a reality.

12 | VERMONTBRIDEM AGA ZINE.COM | SUM MER/FALL 2016

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF WORKING WITH COUPLES PLANNING THEIR WEDDING?

I would have to say its a split between two parts. There is the creative aspect of planning the event. Encouraging each individual to make their event special by adding subtle pieces of their lives or who they are as a person. Whether it be a table that has been passed down in the family to be used for gifts or some small aspect of the decor, just personal enough to make their event unique. The other part would be talking to them the week after the event. Hearing the joy and excitement that is still in their voice. No matter what anyone tells you, there is and will always be a certain amount of stress in planning an event. We try to be that little voice in the background that reminds customers of the reason they are having their event, which is to surround themselves with family, friends and celebrate their special day. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE COUPLES LOOKING FOR RENTALS FOR THEIR WEDDING?

Look at who you are as a couple. Try to incorporate who that is into the event. I can almost guarantee you of one thing. People will not remember what kind of chair they sat in or what type of glass they had at the bar, but what they will remember is if they danced, laughed, and had some great food. A quality tent company will provide their customer with a clean tent that is professionally installed and matched with well-maintained accessories allowing the couple to focus on the most important part of all: THE PARTY!

DESCRIBE THE UNIQUE SERVICES VT RAIL SYSTEM PROVIDES.

The Vermont Rail Systems charter services provide a very unique and classy venue or transportation option for special events and weddings. With Vermont being such a beautiful state as it is, being able to take your guests on an old fashioned train ride creates a timeless and beautiful memory that is guaranteed to be one that will never be forgotten. The Vermont Rail System has over 350 miles of track available throughout the year for our charter services. We offer breathtaking views, a fun and safe way to travel, dine and party. We also have a very personable, certified train crew, who are very flexible and will do whatever it takes to make your day exactly what you hoped for. With the privacy of having your own train, we are also able to provide a safe, legal and unique opportunity for photographers to take photos on the rails and with the train that would otherwise be illegal and dangerous without proper consent and safety precautions provided by the railroad. On your day, the railroad is yours and we will make it the most unique and talked about wedding your guests will ever go to. TELL US ABOUT A FAVORITE OR MEMORABLE WEDDING.

Giovanna and Tom were married in June of 2015. They were married in Chester Vermont, an area that is very close to Giovanna's heart. Her family owned a vacation home near Okemo Mountain where she and her bridal party prepared for their special day. Tom and the men got ready in a separate location at the mountain. The couple requested for their wedding party and all of their guests to meet at the Ludlow Train Depot, where they had their 14 | VERMONTBRIDEM AGA ZINE.COM | SUM MER/FALL 2016

first look on the tracks. They then took the train from Ludlow Depot to the Williams River House in Chester, where they were married and had their reception. After the ceremony and reception they all took the train back to Ludlow for a safe after party commute. Â "We, along with our guests, our families, and our bridal party, could not have had more fun on the Green Mountain Flyer! We chartered the historic train to take us from Ludlow, Vermont to our wedding venue in Chester, Vermont and back again at the end of the night. The train provided us with such a unique experience that all our friends and family still comment on it almost a year later. Everyone had a blast. As we rolled along, people stopped along the route to cheer and wish us well. It was a day we will never forget. Since we were the only train the route that day, we were able to take pictures on the tracks legally and safely. Our photographer, Nate, did an incredible job. The Green Mountain Railroad staff was amazing. They made our day absolutely spectacular from letting us take over the PA system to play music to decorating the train for our wedding. They accommodated our every desire. We enthusiastically recommend the Green Mountain Railroad for any special occasion!" - Giovanna Urist and Thomas Guiler WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE COUPLES CONSIDERING A TRAIN CHARTER SERVICE FOR THEIR WEDDING?

The only advice that we have to give is to come on a train ride with us! We offer scheduled train rides on special occasions as well as fall foliage excursions and dinner trains in the fall, what better way to plan than to come see for yourself! Come meet our crew, walk the train and see just how unique, fun and memorable we can make your special day!

Indigo is a deep and vibrant blue that has many variations in tone, from electric to tropical. Originating in India, it also has the distinction of being one of the world's first widely used dyes for fabrics and textiles. With such a rich and exotic history, it is no surprise that indigo pairs well with lustrous and sparkly silver. The cool tones of silver cut through the depth of indigo for a balance and contrast that is elegant and regal.

Weddings are the perfect opportunity to show your true color personality. Don't be afraid to bust out the vibrant, bold hues that are usually too loud for a fancy event. Have fun with your color pairings and feel free to break old-school rules about which hues go together. Barn Weddings and why we love them history Nothing says “Vermont Wedding quite like a rustic, barn setting. Rich with historical meaning and timeless character, barns are an iconic building throughout New England and have a certain charm that no modern-day structures can match.

The pastoral landscape surrounding barns is the perfect, romantic backdrop for weddings. The rustling of leaves, chirping of birds, and babbling of a brook transport you and your guests to the magical far away time of fairy tales. PHOTOS BY JONATHAN COUTURE

S

aint Michael’s College, in Colchester, Vermont, is where Jess and Chris first met, becoming friends in their freshman year, but it wasn’t until after graduation that they began dating. They were both still living in Burlington and that summer they fell in love. In a picturesque vineyard in Northern California Chris proposed as a beautiful sunset blazed across the sky. Jess grew up in Vermont and the state had special meaning as the place where Jess and Chris met, went to college, and fell in love. Even though they have moved they still go back to Vermont every chance they get to play outside, eat, drink, and be with friends and family. The special meaning, and natural beauty of the Green Mountain State, made it an obvious choice for the location of their wedding. Jess and Chris are relaxed and laid back so their celebration was the same. The cocktail hour was held outside on the lawn, compete with lawn games like stilts, corn hole, ladder ball, and bocce. An array of local cured meats and cheese from Vermont, and fresh shucked oysters from Massachusetts (where the couple now reside) were on hand as well. Having good food, drinks, and most importantly fun was the focus of the day.

On the morning of the wedding several of their guests saw a large rainbow arching over the valley. Jess and Chris took it as a sign that those they loved who are no longer with them were looking down that day and were with them in spirit.

K

atherine and Neil first met during a dinner in Beijing. They were both part of a study abroad program and went to dinner with friends a few days into the program. Katherine poured Neil some tea, since in China it is customary to pour tea for the person sitting next to you, and Neil became convinced she was flirting with him. The rest is history. Neil’s original plan for proposing included a hike up Mount Mansfield, but Katherine persuaded him it was too far from Brooklyn for a weekend getaway. He scrambled for another plan, ending up on Breakneck Ridge near Beacon, New York. After contemplating dozens of overlooks, and Katherine hurrying them along so as to not miss their dinner reservations, Neil finally found the right spot. Katherine is from Vermont and her family has been visiting the Basin Harbor Club for almost 100 years. They loved the idea of choosing a location steeped in family history and somewhere they could plan an entire weekend together with their loved ones, swimming, playing games, and catching up.

love story

It was important to them both that their friends were deeply involved with the wedding, having supported them throughout their relationship as a couple and individually. One of their best friends officiated the ceremony while others selected readings, gave speeches, handed out programs, and helped to put together the perfect Vermont-meets-Brooklyn-dessert bar. The ceremony was truly incredible, with the perfect blending of readings and the telling of their story as only a dear friend could.
