Danielle Palardy and John H.D. Lucy
Susan and Guy Palardy of Alburgh, VT are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Danielle, to John H.D. Lucy, son of Frederick and Iris Lucy of Hudson, MA. Danielle and John met in an English class at St. Michael's College in the spring of 2010. Danielle is a veterinary consultant with Vetri-Science Laboratories and has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Saint Michael’s College. John is an author and graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary with a Masters of Theological Studies. John wishes to be a locally known author and an effective leader in the United Methodist Church. With Danielle's love of people and advocacy, she hopes to positively affect and enhance her community by supporting John's pastoral work and through her desire to expand traditional concepts of healthcare to integrate alternative and natural methods of healing. A June 29, 2014, wedding at the Faith United Methodist Church in South Burlington, VT is planned. The wedding will foster a theme of "timeless love" by bringing elements of vintage and antique beauty to the ceremony and reception. Danielle sums up their future best, "Both of us wish to inspire an authentic, honest, and reverent lifestyle in those we will continue to touch. In truth, to live “happily ever after” as a pastor and pastor’s wife would be among our greatest successes."

Wishi Washi Creative, DIY ideas for using washi tape in your decÓr. With so many patterns and colors available, it's easy to have fun personalizing even the most basic items, with minimal crafting skill. Wrap it around vases or glasses, either around the middle or down from the upper edge. Layer two or three different tapes to create a pattern. Create flags for straws or a bunting banner to decorate a cake. Just fold over and snip with scissors! Dress up kraft paper invitations or plain favor boxes. Leave the rough edges for a more rustic look.

A New Yorker Plans a Vermont Wedding By Lauren A. Isaacoff Photos by Ampersand Wedding Photography
A
fter spending three years in Vermont for law school and developing a deep affinity, rather, obsession, for the state, my goal has been to relocate permanently. After almost five years in the hustle and bustle of New York City, I was ready to pack my bags. My fiancé, however, wasn’t so eager. So we compromised—we agreed to have a Vermont wedding. Convincing our families wasn’t as easy as our premarital compromise. Mine being from the New York metropolitan area, his from Philadelphia, they weren’t so inclined to ask their families and friends to travel from long distances to attend our wedding. In an attempt to appease everyone, we (I, halfheartedly) looked at wedding venues in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. However, New Jersey and Pennsylvania couldn’t compare to Vermont. So it was settled—there would be a Vermont wedding! There were other compromises to be made. I wanted a rustic theme; our parents wanted something more elegant. I would have settled for red and white checkered table cloth and barbecue; while our families envisioned a black-tie affair, which it ultimately was in the end. So, we agreed on rustic elegance and found the perfect place to marry, literally, all of our wedding ideas. The Hildene, the former home of Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, in Manchester, Vermont is both elegant with its beautiful historic mansion and English gardens, and rustic with its breathtaking views of the surrounding Green and Taconic Mountains. Views that, upon walking up the hill to the ceremony site, wowed the pants off our guests, many of whom were virgin Vermonters! The day was magnificent. We are so blessed to have had the most perfect day surrounded by all of our loved ones and incredible scenery of blooming gardens, luscious greenery and a clear blue sky. And, not one hiccup occurred in our carefully planned day! Let me start with saying that wedding planning is a full-time job and during the six months we had to plan, I already had one of those. Planning a destination wedding from far away was an added challenge. Once we settled on the Hildene after a December 2012 barnstorming trip through Vermont, the next step was selecting invitations. I searched all over for the perfect invitation, scouring invitation book after invitation book. While those were nice, I wanted something a little more personal and creative to set the tone of the wedding. Custom invitations, however, can get expensive. A friend of mine recommended Three Little Words, and with them, I was able to customize and create the perfect invitation for a great price. The invitations turned out fabulously and set the stage for our rustically elegant wedding!

Picking a photographer was more challenging. Prices run the gamut, from reasonable to so exorbitant, you’d think they were photographing the Brangelina wedding! One photographer (who shall remain nameless), when we told him he still was out of our price range despite reducing his price (and his services), responded with a rude email about getting what you pay for, as if to teach us a lesson. We selected Ellen and Paul at Ampersand Wedding Photography in Burlington, VT after meeting Ellen in New York City. Ellen and Paul had similar aesthetics and ideas to ours, were easy going and great to work with! Their talent is evident in the fantastic wedding photos!
We took a few weekend trips back to Manchester to plan and each trip was a whirlwind! Each time I had a carefully planned itinerary to make the most of our trip. We met with Hildene’s wedding coordinator, had two tastings with the caterer, met with the florist to discuss flowers and decorations, had multiple hair and makeup trials, met with the band leader, surveyed tables, chairs and decorations from the rental company and obtained a marriage license (who knew you didn’t need the groom to get the license). In those short trips, we accomplished a lot! In the two weeks leading up to wedding, I spent most of my days trying to do my real job
w:v er m o ntb ri d e m a g a zi n e.co m f:fa c eb o o k .co m/v er m o ntb ri d e m a g a zi n e P:p i nterest.co m/v tb ri d e
and most of my evenings planning the wedding. I touched based with all the vendors to make sure everything was set and ready, planned the wedding timeline down to the minute, set the hair and makeup schedule, figured out transportation logistics and religiously checked the ten day weather forecast. At some point, my now husband advised me to let go and have faith in everyone and that everything would proceed as planned. In the end, it was absolutely perfect! I cannot think of one detail that I would change or that did not go as planned, and if there was one or two or three, I was having such an amazing time and was so filled will love and happiness, that I didn’t even notice!

The day after the wedding, just as gorgeous as the wedding day, still reveling in it all, my husband and I and our dog, Maple, took a trip up to Mt. Equinox to enjoy the stunning views which stretch as far as Montreal and Mt. Washington. The weekend culminated with a jump off the cliffs at the Dorset quarry into the cold deep waters below and a much needed nap. The wedding was a huge success and my husband and I owe much gratitude to everyone—all of our friends and family and all the vendors who were there to support us! The wedding planning and the wedding itself was great fun! I highly recommend getting married and would do it all over in a heartbeat—but only to the same groom! Molly Milowsky Nick Frate August 18, 2012
The Bema at Dartmouth College | dartmouth, new hampshire photos by polis Photography
How and where did you meet?
We met in New York City. We were set up and for our first date we went in costume as Indians to a pilgrim and Indian party. An hour after we met I knew he was the one. We really hit it off and everything just felt so natural and easy. That night Nick invited me to a ski house with him in Killington, Vermont for the winter. I accepted and the rest is history!
What was the proposal like?
Nick and I got a sheltie puppy that we named Shelby. She means the world to us. He trained her to bring me the box. He knew I could never say no to her. It was really simple and sweet but just felt so right when it happened.
How did Vermont play a role in your wedding?
Vermont is home to both of us. Even though we technically don’t live there it is where we are from and it is by far our favorite place. Really where the magic began and where someday we hope to grow old together.
How did you choose your venue?
I wanted my wedding to have a personal, warm, natural feel. This vibe was very important to us. I also wanted to create a space that would be rustic, yet elegant. The perfect venue was my parents’ log cabin restaurant, Jesse’s. I was able to add elegant touches to the log cabin restaurant by working with my mom and Lynda Dandeaneau who added all the little details throughout the restaurant to give it that natural, but elegant feel. The finishing touches were the beautiful sailcloth tent and handmade harvest tables made by Brandon Blood of Blood’s Catering.

What was your theme/color palette?
Monochromatic, white/antique with lavender touch
What was your favorite detail from your wedding? My dress was fabulous—definitely the centerpiece of the wedding!
How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
I am a very detailed person so I made sure our entire wedding reflected everything about the two of us. It was personal, special, and real just like us, from the nontraditional ceremony capturing the free spirits in our personality, to where the venue took place. We are both from Vermont, and since we met, we have spent more time there than anywhere else. We already have so many memories. It is home to us and we really wanted to share this special place with all of our family and friends. The dĂŠcor and details also really represented us with that organic, natural, rustic, country home feeling. Every word in all the speeches had meaning that was directed towards us and every song had some special meaning. Our entire wedding was a reflection of our life and dream that we have built together.
What were some of your favorite moments?
Our ceremony was by far my favorite part, from the start to the second we were pronounced husband and wife! We had a nontraditional ceremony. It was everything we wanted and more. We are not religious people; we are both free spirits. We wanted our ceremony to be in an outside open area. We decided on the Bema at Dartmouth. The Bema is an outside natural amphitheater in the middle of the woods in downtown Hanover. It was the perfect place. It was always my childhood dream of arriving at a magical place in a horse drawn carriage marrying the man of my dreams, my soulmate, my best friend. Nick was hands down that person and we were lucky enough with the help of one of my dearest friend and her gorgeous Clydesdale, Maggie, to make that dream come true. When I got out of the carriage I walked down the aisle to the music of an incredibly talented guitar player

whose music features a reggae twist. One of our favorite moments of the ceremony was that my father was the justice of the peace and married us. It was personal, special, and real. Instead of traditional readings, my mom and two close friends gave us heartfelt advice for our future. For the recessional we walked out to my mom and dad’s wedding song, Bob Dylan’s, “You ain’t goin’ nowhere.”
What was the song chosen for your first dance? Stevie Nicks’ “Leather and Lace.”
How did your vendors help make your wedding day perfect?
My photographers really captured every moment. They caught all the little details. I was so busy enjoying the moment I did not get to see every detail I had spent the year planning. I was happy I was able to see them when I got the pictures back! I also loved candid shots instead of just pictures of us posing. It was really fun to go back and see how much fun everyone was having! Lynda Dandeneau was absolutely incredible. She helped make my wedding perfect, and her work was magnificent! She helped me with so much more than just the flowers, although they were absolutely stunning! She incorporated so many little details to make it so special. She really understood my rustic romantic vision and ran with it. The waitstaff and the chef at Jesse’s were awesome! They made everything run so smoothly. The food was the absolute best. I still have guests raving about it and the service was unbeatable! My mom was also a huge part to my wedding. She helped me transform every little detail into making my wedding a dream come true! I could not have done it without her and of course my dad too! I feel so fortunate to have been able to work with such talented people. Everyone really exceeded my expectations.
What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?
On the day of your wedding let all the worries and stress go. There is nothing you can do about all the little last minute things. You are probably the only one that will notice all the things that are not exactly right. I had the time of my life on my wedding day. I enjoyed every second!

How and where did you meet?
We worked in different departments at the same company so our paths didn’t really cross until a mutual friend asked both of us to participate in a mud volleyball tournament. We officially met on a sunny Saturday morning in August 2008 in the mud. Greg knew he found the perfect girl because “she is not afraid to get dirty and hot as hell!”
What was the proposal like?
We flew to San Diego for a much needed beach weekend. Jess used to be a lifeguard so it was only fitting that Greg proposed on a beach as Jess sat on the lifeguard stand. Greg gave Jess a heartfelt love note and as she read it out loud, Greg got down on one knee in the sand for the official proposal. After saying YES, Jess then asked “Is it insured?!” before putting the ring on. A nice touch was that Greg called Jess's entire family to ask permission. 74 | vermont bride winter/spring 2014
Why did you choose Vermont for your wedding?
We both have family roots in Vermont so it was never a doubt that we’d get married in Greg’s beautiful home state of Vermont. It’s true when they say “You can move out of Vermont, but at heart you will always be a Vermonter.” It was only fitting that we bring all our friends and family to a place that was so special to us.
How did you choose your venue?
Barns are an integral part of the Vermont landscape. The question for us was which venue had the barn that best suited our style. Greg was familiar with the Mountain Top Inn & Resort and they just so happen to be building a new barn,—Vermont Barn—and guaranteed snow on the ground due to snowmaking capabilities equaled a perfect match.

What was your theme/color palette?
Our theme was winter and everything we love about winter! We wanted to exploit all the wonderful things that winter brings: from the brisk air outside for the ceremony to the beauty of the untouched landscape from newly fallen snow. We had a toboggan guest book, snow shoes and used ski resorts we had both been to for the table names. We wanted the colors to be natural and soft. The bridesmaids were in blue dresses with grey scarves while the groomsmen wore grey suits with blue scarves.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding?
The handmade birch tree candle holder centerpieces made by Jess’s brother added such a simplistic, elegant charm coupled with the ski resort names in mason jars with baby’s breath embodied our love of skiing and nature.
How did your wedding reflect your relationship as a couple?
We are spontaneous and always up for the next adventure. The overall wedding theme was about having fun and incorporating elements of the all places we’ve lived.
What were some of your favorite moments?
What was the song chosen for your first dance?
We had a choreographed first dance to Josh Turner’s “Time is Love” because the words are very meaningful to us. And of course, we had to get the party started so we busted into One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful.”
How did your vendors help make your wedding day perfect?
Everyone says the DJ makes the party and that held true. Mike Ryan was phenomenal. We couldn’t have asked for a better DJ to make sure everyone was out of their seat and having fun! Jamie and Jamie have a great eye to capture intimate details of the day and did an extraordinary job capturing the meaning and feeling behind our wedding. We knew we wanted to get married in Vermont so the natural choice was to turn to Vermont Bride Magazine for ideas. The magazine did not disappoint especially since we were planning the wedding from the other side of the country!
What advice would you give other couples planning their wedding?
Many people will give their opinion, but at the end of the day, “it’s your day” and you should both have the time of your lives.
Jess’ father serenading her to “Daddy’s Little Girl,” Car Bombs on the dance floor, and our first dance.

Sicily THE INFORMED TRAVE LER
A Crossroads of
O
Civilizations
By Carrie McDougall Photos Courtesy Cultural Crossroads
ff the toe of the boot of Italy is the largest island in the Mediterranean. While a part of Italy, Sicily is a crossroads of civilizations influenced by the ancient Greek, Romans, Arabs and North Africans among others. You will find lovely temperatures, rugged mountains, beautiful beaches, national parks, wildlife, underwater life, art, history culture and delicious cuisine all on one island. Food, family, traditions and warm hospitality are at the core of Sicilian life. Agriculture and fishing are important parts of their economy and the many cultural influences make their food a culinary delight. There are several great wine regions, and olive groves, orchards of lemons, oranges and almonds abound. The age-old tradition of harvesting salt is even found here. Cities such as Palermo, Siracusa and Taormona among others showcase art, history, ornate churches with shopping and nightlife, but wander into the countryside and you can enjoy picnics in the mountains near quaint villages with artists and pastry shops, cobblestone streets narrower than cars, or relax in seaside resorts. In winter, head to the slopes of Mt. Etna Volcano or Piano Battaglia to ski or bask in the sunshine. In other seasons, you can take jeep rides, snowshoe, trek or horseback ride to the top. For those who appreciate history, there are temples, amphitheaters and mosaics

from early Greek and Roman times found in Agrigento, Segesta and Selinute. Noto and Ragua have Baroque-style churches, palaces and art. Monreale has a 12th century cathedral in a Byzantine influenced Norman-Arab style. You can find romantic spots for honeymoons, and places to relax including spas and resorts with spectacular views. Everywhere there are romantic dining spots overlooking mountains or the ocean, palm tree lined beaches, festivals, concerts, opera, scuba diving, hiking and much more. Cross the Tyrrhenian Sea to the picturesque Aeolian Islands and enjoy the peace and quiet with few tourists. The islands have exceptional beaches, romantic sunsets and fantastic seafood. You can see lava shoot out of a volcano while floating nearby on a sunset cruise. If you are interested in getting married in Sicily, the town of Cefal첫 is popular as are several wineries which have hotels and spectacular settings. The beauty of Sicily and its Islands, the warm sunny days and mild nights, and the opportunity to experience a special part of Italy with its history, culture and gastronomy is worth the visit. Best time to go Unlike the rest of Italy the weather in Sicily is pleasant year-round, no matter the season. The nicest times to go are May to June and September to October, with temperatures in the 70s and low 80s. In July and August, the temperatures at the beach range from comfortable to hot, but they are crowded. Inland, it can be very hot. While winter months can be cooler (50s to 60s) and while it is too cold to swim, hotel rates are better there are no crowds, and it can be a special time to see this wonderful place.

carrie mcdougall | cultural crossroads culturalcrossroads.com | 877.479.7040 How long have you been in business?
I started this business in 2005. How or Why did you become a tour operator?
I began traveling internationally when I was very young and since then have lived and worked overseas. I have traveled to all 7 continents and about 70 countries. I worked as a travel agent and in the airline, hotel businesses, led trips for Elderhostel’s Scandinavian Seminars and went on 14 trips for the Harvard Alumni Association. I received my MA in Intercultural Relations, so with all this background I wanted to create special opportunities for travelers.
What is your favorite part of working couples to plan their honeymoon?
As with all my tours, I love to listen to their interests and create something magical for them that they will always remember. What advice do you have for couples planning a honeymoon?
Planning a wedding is often overwhelming. I recommend that honeymooners take one day after the wedding to sleep and relax before traveling to their honeymoon destination. It makes the honeymoon even more special when they aren’t exhausted.
What do you love most about being a tour operator?
I am able to take all my experiences and background and both customize and create one-of-akind trips for people.
tina Patno | tasty persuasions catering tastypersuasions.com | 802.372.3123 How long have you been in business?
What advice do you have for couples choosing a caterer?
We just started our 10th year in August.
Make sure the caterer will work with you to customize the menu and make it the meal you desire. Also, if you desire a taste testing and if the caterer refuses that should be a red flag. I prefer to do a taste testing beforehand so there are no surprises on the day of your wedding.
How or Why did you become a caterer?
To start a business of my own for when I retired. What do you love most about being a caterer?
I love the interaction with people, working with them to customize the meal they desire and to stay within their budget. What is your favorite part of working with couples to plan their menu?
Same answer as above.
