New „online‟ Magazine
We sent out our first magazine online to members (who we have an email address for) last month and had a great feedback response, most of it of a positive nature.
YOU DID NOT RECEIVE YOUR MAGAZINE VIA EMAIL? THEN MAYBE WE DO NOT HAVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS, IT HAS CHANGED FROM WHAT THE CLUB HAS ON RECORD OR WE HAVE AN ERROR IN OUR RECORDS... To make sure we have your email address and it is „correct‟ please send an email to the Secretary at administration@vwclubwa.com The most important feature is that the magazine is in „colour‟. In the future the club will be looking at reducing the numbers of printed magazines, it will save the club money as well as help the environment. You will also receive the online magazine up to a week earlier than the printed version. A questionnaire will go out with the December magazine to see if you still want the magazine posted or you would be happy with it being sent online. If we do not have your email address, you will need to wait until November before you can see this October online on our website with everybody else. Ray Willis - Editor and President
BUG-IN 2011 Road Trip... The 2011 BUG-IN is being held in Western Australia over the Easter weekend of 22-25 April 2011. After this 42nd National BUG-IN, we would like to organise a 5 day road trip in the picturesque South West of WA. Such an event will require lots of preparation and Rod McSwain has slipped into the role as Co-ordinator. Rod has been looking at road maps and attractions down south and would like your input. If you know of any scenic drive or attraction that would cater for maybe up to 20 cars and up to 40 people, then please contact Rod on 0403259719 or by email at mcswain@optusnet.com.au. Rod is planning an investigative drive from 22nd to 26th October, but more importantly is open to any assistance to get this road trip up and running.

SHANNONS 2009 DAY OF THE VOLKSWAGEN Date: Location:
SUNDAY 6th DECEMBER 2009 G.O. EDWARDS RESERVE, VICTORIA PARK
Hi there! Yes, only about 6 weeks to go and the final preparations are being put in place. LATEST INFORMATION Please keep watch on the website for the latest information and of course the next magazine will be the last before the show. This will have a lot more detail in it for those wishing to come along. This magazine has the judging categories listed on page 10 for those interested. CAR STICKERS We have come up with a generic sticker for this event (see below) and this should be in your November magazine with arrangements for printing underway. This sticker will be available until run out and can be used for several years to advertise the event. We are also designing a „collectible‟ sticker for the event, one that will only be available on the day and only to those that attend - it will not be available after the event. See the November magazine for the design. We would like to thank our sponsors SHANNONS for making the stickers possible.
ADVERTISING We have more flyers if you need them and we also have A4 and A3 posters if you know any businesses that would display them for the club. Please let us know. VOLUNTEERS As usual we are looking for volunteers to help on the day and any businesses that would like to participate on the day. Last year was one of the best shows we have had and we look forward to a large roll out of your Volkswagens and VW associate makes again this year. So dust them off, and polish them up for their big day out... Please email viawest@vwclubwa.com for anything regarding the Day of the Volkswagen…

Southern Weekender 25 to 28 September by Dave Moore Well the southern weekender started off by meeting up in Kelmscott on a sunny Friday morning. There were three kombis to head off with a couple to follow later. Once we were all ready we headed off down the Albany highway. Traffic was pleasantly quiet and we were only held up for a while behind one caravan. Had a stop for fuel in Williams and then again in Kojonup where we had lunch. We arrived at the Happy Days Caravan Park on the King River around mid afternoon. Booked in and relaxed for a while before we started to get hungry and decided to head into Albany for a feed. We all squeezed into 66split and cruised into town to find a pub. We found a place on a corner with big clear blinds so we could do some VW spotting. We had just ordered our food when we spotted our first Kombi. It was Patrick and family in his orange bay window. They spotted us too and joined us for dinner.
It wasn‟t long after dinner that we were joined by another kombi when Alan and Glynis turned up in Ruby Dear. Headed back to the caravan park where it had got quite chilly so with the invitation from Alan and Glynis we hung out in their chalet until it got late and was past our bedtimes. Day two we stocked up on supplies in Albany then headed off to have a look around the wind farm. We were all impressed with the wind machines with each blade spanning 36 meters. The noise from the blades is quite mesmerising and changes as you walk around them.
We then headed into Denmark where we had lunch by the river and had a walk round town. We headed up the coast to Coalmine Beach holiday park just south of Walpole. We set up camp and gathered some kindling for the evening campfire. We went down to the beach on the inlet to watch the sun go down and then headed back to camp to get the fire going, although you could have mistaken it for smoke screen until our wood had dried out a bit. We threw some snags on the hot plate, drank some beverages and talked tall tales until late.

Via West some rapids. Once done there we went to head back to the tingle tree only to find the road system is a one way loop and we couldn‟t get back to it without taking a long detour back through Walpole!
(Continued from page 11)
Day three and with the advice from someone on the campsite to go and see circular pool and take in the giant tingle tree on the way back we set off. Note to self, check on advice you have been given! We headed up the dirt road leading to circular pool, passing straight past the tingle tree, planning on checking that out on the way back. Circular pool had plenty of water flowing into it over
Time was ticking on so we decided to do that on the next trip and hit the road heading to Manjimup. Here we spilt for a few hours as some wanted to go to the vintage motor
Page 12 cross that was on. This turned out to be quite a casual event and we weren‟t too sure who was racing and who was just out for and afternoon ride, but it was fun to watch. While others went to the timber museum which was very interesting. It was time again to book in for the night at Fonty‟s pool. Once again it was time to eat, so back into town we went. Pub or pizza, pub or pizza? Mmmm that pizza sure smells good, pizza wins. We took our pizzas back to camp and again were kindly hosted by Alan and Glynis in their chalet. Another very pleasant evening with very enjoyable company. Day four already and all too soon it was time to head home. A slight detour took us to pass through Gnomesville where we stopped to take a walk round. We plan to add to the collection next time we pass through. Just like to say a big thank you to all who were able to join in on this camping trip. See you on the next one.

Member Story of the Month Winner $20 Fuel Voucher
Review by Darren Stoney, the owner. My Golf is a special factory order so was selected in May for delivery 1st of September, in the end it was available early so I picked it up on the 28th of August 2009. I ordered on spec having test driven a Series V Golf the year before, but deciding to buy a Honda CRV Luxury instead (more on the reason why later). So far I have driven 1500 km and fuel consumption on the first tank was 5.87 litres per 100 km. No doubt this will improve as the engine runs in, and I wonder why anyone would bother with a hybrid car when diesel technology is becoming so good. This diesel is not noisy, smoky or slow, the only real downside to diesel left now is that the handle on the bowser is always a bit oily, so it is worth throwing on some disposable gloves when you refuel. Don‟t be fooled by the 103kw rating, put your foot down and after a brief lag you can feel all 320 nm of torque chomping up the bitumen as other cars shrink in your mirrors. Click on cruise control now you have reached the speed limit and the speed you have set is displayed in the bottom of the multi function display between the speedo and the Tacho. Need to be faster or slower? Each tap of the + or –
changes your speed by 1 km/h. Changing from 70 to 80? Tap + 10 times and you are there. Press cancel and the set speed stays displayed but smaller so you can tell it is not active. This is one of the best cruise controls I have used but the cancel is a bit fiddly on top of the stalk, because if you push it too far it turns the cruise off completely. A separate cancel button on the wheel would be an improvement.
Now if you are getting bored cruising on the speed limit, with the buttons on the left of the steering wheel you can cycle through fuel consumption, average speed, travel time, range and much more on the same display. There are 2 downsides to this display, one is that the odometer reading is only displayed when you stop, so if you have to give an odometer reading when you refuel you can‟t prememorise it as you drive up to the station, the other is that when you are using the Sat Nav directional displays come up here and as far as I can tell you can‟t override this to see the range and fuel consumption. The Sat Nav is brilliant, entry of destinations is predictive through the touch screen, so most destinations can be entered very quickly and safely, even when driving, providing you know the correct address. The downside of this is that you don‟t know the correct address ie you have the street but are unsure of the suburb you wont be able to enter the street name. Don‟t despair, you can enter a road nearby, zoom out a bit and drag the marker on the screen across the map to the street you need. Just be aware not to do this when you are driving and your wife will say something like “I told you it was Kensington.” Like all Sat Nav (Continued on page 14)

systems there are some errors, but there is less than others I have used and they tend to be in the voice guidance side, because when it does give an odd instruction the diagram on the screen shows correct. You can customise the display, and I like to use the split screen with the direction map. This is great as the direction map zooms in when you are coming to a change of direction and then zooms back out to show the route when you have passed it. The Media interface means your ipod sits snuggly in the centre console, although no room for anything else, and you can control everything through the touch screen. This is great for controlling music and the 300W Dynaudio really pumps out the beats, just wear earplugs when your 17 year old is in the passenger seat, you will need them. I like to listen to podcasts and this is probably the only downside of the Media interface, because it lists everything alphabetically and doesn‟t distinguish which episodes have not been listened to, it can be hard to find the next episode if the author doesn‟t start the title with an episode number. Dang it, I‟ll just pop in my earplugs and crank up Hill Top Hoods instead. How about the styling? Well to be honest I didn‟t think it was very different to the Series V in the brochure, but once you are up close and personal there is more to it than photos reveal. There is a wide and aggressive feel to the front end that I love. The big VW emblem dominates the grill and the little ones inside the headlights give it a customised touch. At the rear it keeps a similar look to the Series V but again I think the stance and tail lights are an improvement. The sports pack comes with Factory window tint and this is dark without being excessive and rear window visibility is excellent. Inside the sports seats in Corn Silk Beige leather are supportive and very customizable and look great, but I would like to see more electric controls with a 2 position memory function, for when my wife drives she alters everything. The airconditioning has more controls than I will ever use as I tend to go auto with the climate control but it‟s nice to know they are there if required. Every thing
is quite well positioned and this makes sensors all round give an excellent for easy driving. colour indication of the closeness of obstacles on the Sat Nav screen at the The Drive? Great. A Gallery of Beetles by Amanda Williams Hi, I am an artist with a fondness for VW‟s old and new. I have owned three Beetles over time - a 1969, then a 1972 and now a new one. Trading the 1972 for the 2006 was a tough decision driven by the thousand or more kilometres a week that was taking its toll on the beloved oldie. All three Beetles have worn red paint and the “Ladybug” plate. Most artists, one way or another, portray in their works the things which are important to them. It‟s not surprising then that the Beetle
The Beetle in Colour Study
would appear over and over again in my paintings, always standing for far more than just a car. Sometimes they get their starring role in strange ways.
Underpass Carpark The Underpass Motel began as a video project when eight artists were invited to take a room in a motel which didn‟t exist. There was no story line and most of them had never met. The films I they made were very different and when finished were woven together to make a most unusual movie. My dark and wistful story involved a stopmotion puppet named Angie. While the VW doesn‟t appear in the film itself many of the paintings that came out of it explore Angie‟s arrival at the motel in an old Beetle. It was a tough trip and by the time she arrived her car was a picture of corrosion and peeling paint. In other paintings we see a flat tyre which we imagine is why she could never leave this strange place on
the edge of the world. The rest of the paintings in this series include the Beetle slowly disintegrating in the Motel‟s car park along with a Kombi in not much better condition as can be seen in The Causeway. The Beetle in Colour Study I belongs to a new series of work destined for a solo exhibition planned for next year. It too will be a strange story proving again that I see the Beetle as something special – rusted or otherwise.
The Underpass Motel is showing at the Turner Gallery in William Street, Perth until the 7th November. There are 18 works by me which include eight paintings with old Beetles and a Type I Kombi. The small ones will be easy to find but the three biggest paintings are in other rooms of the gallery – ask the staff for directions.

E-Up! Concept – Beetle of the 21st Century Cars with pure petrol and diesel engines – which in the foreseeable future will continue be unbeatable for mid- to long-range distances – will be supplemented by cars like the E-Up! in upcoming years, especially in the city. And that will happen starting in 2013. The concept car now being presented in Frankfurt very realistically shows how we envision such a Volkswagen with pure electric drive – technically, visually and with regard to a practical size." The zero-emissions concept car designed under the leadership of Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Brand, and Head of the Development business area, is based on modules of the New Small Family anticipated in the year 2011, but at a length of 3.19 meters it is even more compact. It also offers an innovative 3+1 seating concept. In its styling, the powerful and clearly drawn lines of the EUp! body follow the new Volkswagen "design DNA" par excellence and show cult potential. That is because never before has an ultra-compact vehicle – which does not aim to be retro but forges new paths instead – brought such appealing, timeless, class-independent and dynamic qualities to light. Inside, the smallest Volkswagen ever also astonishes with its impressive space utilisation. Drive unit – battery and integral drive The 135 km/h fast 3+1 seater is driven by an electric motor with a peak power output of 60 kW (continuous power: 40 kW). The motor of the front-wheel drive car, which is mounted in front, develops a maximum torque of 210 Newton-meters right from rest. The driver activates forward or reverse gear via a rotary knob in the centre console. The fact that the E-Up! will also quite clearly offer driving enjoyment is demonstrated by a look at the car‟s classic 0

Front end: Although E-Up! styling was developed from the Up!, the electric car differs from conventionally powered models in the new model series.
Page 17 small Volkswagen far into the future. Fitting in with this image are the headlights with their facet-like lenses – cut like diamonds – that extend over the entire width of the lens cover. Another interesting detail: the fog lights. At first glance they can hardly be recognised as such. The designers have configured them as C-shaped, chrome-trimmed elements in the headlight housings. Also styledefining is the black line running in a circular pattern in the bumper – a typical characteristic of the New Small
Styling – the Beetle of the 21st Century The E-Up! emphatically demonstrates that emission-free Volkswagens will be anything but lacking in emotion. Responsible for this, once again, is the team led by Group Chief Designer Walter de Silva. Together with Klaus Bischoff (Chief Designer, Volkswagen Brand) and Flavio Manzoni (Head of Creative Design, Volkswagen Group), he developed a layout for the E-Up! that reflects the visual bandwidth of the future New Small Family. The EUp! bears a resemblance to previously presented concept vehicles of this new model series – the Up! (city specialist), Space-Up! (microvan) and Space-Up Blue! (fuel cell powered van) – it represents a design stage that reflects the future production car Consider the front end: It fits in pereven more closely. fectly with the brand‟s new family "The E-Up!", says Klaus Bischoff, "is face, yet at the same time it refers characterised by a reduced, very back to one of the greatest icons in clear and yet highly emotional de- automotive history in the area of the sign." And that is certainly no coinci- engine bonnet: the Beetle. Nonethedence. Family. "In the interplay of all elements, the bumper, headlights and engine bonnet," explains Klaus Bischoff, "the E-Up! really appears to smile. And that is how it should be." Conspicuous: There are hardly any openings at the front end, since there is no need for separate cooling of the drive unit. The VW logo on the V-shaped engine bonnet of the E-Up! is more than just an homage to the Beetle. Hidden behind the folding logo is the integrated port for charging the batteries. The advantage of positioning the plug port here is that it makes it easier to recharge the E-Up! from stations on either the left or right sides of the street or directly in front of the car. Side profile: "In keeping with Volkswagen‟s "design DNA" the side sections also exhibit a high level of stylistic purity, following the Bauhaus principle created in the 1920s in Germany that „less is more‟," says Flavio Manzoni. This car‟s visual identity is very intentionally created by just a few (Continued on page 18)

graphic elements that blend together to form a new unit in the classic Bauhaus approach to creative art and innovative technology. These defining elements of the E-Up! side profile include its side glass and shoulder styling line above the door handles known as the tornado line. The side profile styling is further defined by the car‟s short body overhangs, the confident outward shaping of the wheel housings and unique C-pillar. Flavio Manzoni explains the special presence of the C-pillar: "Visually, the vertically aligned C-pillar is positioned above the rear wheel, which conveys a feeling of balance and solidity. These properties are indispensable for a Volkswagen. Last but not least, the prominent and powerful wheel styling gives the car a perfect „demeanour‟". Rear end: The basic graphic forms of the tailgate and rear bumper follow those of the very first Up! However, the once again completely glazed tailgate now exhibits significantly larger taillights in dark smoked glass look. Running through the taillights is a line trimmed in chrome that extends across the tailgate. The circular chrome line unites the two taillights in a vertical direction. These accents are also reflected in the matching graphic element of the front and rear bumpers. Solar roof: The roof of the E-Up! is equipped with solar cells over an area measuring 1.4 square meters. This area – between the rear part of the roof edge spoiler and the front windscreen – can be enlarged to 1.7 square meters in total by folding down the sun visors that are also equipped with solar cells. The solar cells continuously supply energy to the car‟s electrical system, and while the vehicle is parked they help to cool the interior by supplying energy to the car‟s ventilation system. Interior I – Instruments and controls Flavio Manzoni: "The interior was designed in complete harmony with the car‟s exterior styling, and it exhibits a similar aesthetic with a technicalpurist influence." To improve the electric car‟s energy economy by avoiding unnecessary loads, actuators such as mirror adjustment and window lifts were designed to be manually oper-
Via West ated. Nonetheless, the highly innovative E-Up! makes its appearance with an impressive array of future generation high-tech displays and controls. They are all quite self-explanatory, and the car‟s controls are intuitive, making driving and life with this Volkswagen as simple and stress-free as possible. HMI: The concept car has a touchscreen based HMI (Human Machine Interface) with intelligent E-Up! specific indicators and assistance functions. During navigation, the system continually monitors the momentary
load state of the batteries, for example, as well as activated energy consumers such as lights and air conditioner, momentary traffic data, elevation profiles of potential routes and the locations of available charging stations. The driver can display these "filling stations" at any time; available charging stations may be reserved within a defined reservation time period. The charging process can also be precisely planned to the minute via the HMI. This lets users charge the EUp! during a specific time period in which electricity is available at special low rates. The charging process can be activated at any time via an intuitively operated application installed on an iPhone or similar mobile device, even from outside of the vehicle. Even more: From the application users can query the momentary charge status and vehicle location (the latter via map display) or simply check whether the car is locked. Moreover, to preserve vehicle battery power the program lets users pre-condition the E-Up! interior. This involves cooling or
Page 18 heating the car‟s interior as long as the car is still connected to the charging station and is drawing its electrical power from the electrical grid. Interior II – 3+1 seating concept The generous space implemented over a total vehicle area of just 5.1 square meters is absolutely astounding. Several factors are responsible for this clever packaging. First, there is the reduced size of the instrument panel, which was shifted further forward than usual toward the engine compartment. This was enabled,
among other things, by optimising the components within the instrument panel. Second, the small Volkswagen is a 3+1 seater. This means that the front passenger seat is located 50 millimetres forward, thanks to the instruments being shifted further forward. This layout increases leg room in the rear behind the front passenger tremendously. As a result, two adults can sit comfortably on the passenger‟s side. Stepping into the vehicle is also simplified by an Easy-Entry feature, which allows the front passenger‟s seat to be pushed up to 270 millimetres away from the rear bench. There is less leg room behind the "normally" positioned driver‟s seat; the space here was designed as a spare seat. Additional freedom of movement is provided to rear passengers by lowering the centre tunnel in front of the rear bench seat; it serves as an additional footrest. This enables use of an electric handbrake in the style of the Passat, so that no lever mechanism (Continued on page 20)

obstructs the footwell. Cargo area: The clever packaging solutions do not end there: To optimise comfort in the rear, the rear seat backrest is split 40/60. When the backrest on the driver‟s seat is folded down (40 percent section), stowage capacity is increased from 85 to 180 litres (with loading to the upper edge of the front seat backrest). This stowage space can be enclosed by a load barrier that folds down out from the folded backrest. When the entire rear seating backrest is folded down, a stowage capacity of 320 litres is created. It is even 520 litres when loaded to the roofliner. To transport long objects, the front passenger‟s backrest can also be folded to a pass-through position. In this configuration, the EUp! can handle objects up to two metres in length. This high degree of variability will also certainly characterise the affordable production version of an Up! powered by an electric motor. That is because electric cars, as Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn insists and therefore wrote into the specification for this future Volkswagen, must be truly affordable and offer uncompromising everyday practicality. Micro-mobility in the city – made by Volkswagen Volkswagen is comprehensively addressing implementation of this every-
Via West day practicality. These efforts not only encompass the vehicle itself, but the entire environment around the car driver. In the city, for example, this includes the realisation that after parking the E-Up! people will want to cover shorter distances without a car – from the job to lunch, to the fitness studio, another meeting, whatever is on the day‟s schedule. For these shorter trips, the Volkswagen "Micromobility in the city" concept team has invented clever zero-emission microvehicles. The Kickstep, for example, which is an ultra-compact folding scooter. And the electrically powered Microbully, a scooter that also fits easily in the E-Up! load space. There is also the ped-tric, a folding bike with electric motors built into the wheel hubs that could also make the trip to the city aboard the E-Up! And even the VW_1M, a large electric moped – the size of a carry-on case when not in use – that could be stowed in the E -Up! without even needing to fold down the rear bench seat. Such micro -mobility solutions were created at the Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam. So the E-Up! will be putting many things into motion. In 2013 this will become a reality for the first time.
Volkswagen Shows Future Course of the Automobile
Page 20 Unveiling of one-litre concept car! Volkswagen is celebrating the world premiere of the most fuel-efficient car in the world, the L1. This full-hybrid vehicle, weighing just 380 kilograms, offers an initial glimpse at how a production version might appear. The CFRP body is a masterful achievement in car making, both technically and visually. Unique on this car are its proportions. While the length of the L1 at 3,813 millimetres is still similar to that of a Volkswagen Fox, and its height of 1,143 millimetres nearly matches that of a Lamborghini Murciélago, the car‟s aerodynamically optimised width (1,200 millimetres) has no comparisons in the world of today‟s production cars. With a combined fuel consumption value of 1.38 litres diesel, this Volkswagen – designed for everyday use and extremely aerodynamic (Cd of 0.195!) – will become a world champion fuel-saver. CO2 emissions of the 160 km/h L1 are 36 g/km. The TDI, Emotor and 7-speed DSG are installed at the rear; as a unit they represent the most fuel efficient hybrid drive in the world. In the standard "ECO" mode, the 800 cm3 TDI develops a power of 20 kW / 27 PS (at 4,000 rpm); in "Sport" mode – used to reach the car‟s top speed, for example – the car‟s power increases to 29 kW / 39 PS (at 4,000 rpm). The maximum torque of the TDI is 100 Newtonmeter (at 1,900 rpm). Naturally, the L1 also has a Stop-Start system, which automatically shuts off the drive unit when the vehicle is at a stop and restarts it when the gas or E-pedal is

This is emphasised by the current Euro NCAP ratings, according to which a total of six Volkswagen models (Polo, Golf, Tiguan, Touran, Passat and Touareg) were awarded the maximum five-star rating for the demanding crash tests. Volkswagen therefore offers its customers one of the safest model ranges in the w o r l d . "We achieved the top rating for the Polo a few weeks ago, in spite of more stringent Euro NCAP crash test conditions. The same applies to the sixthgeneration Golf and the Tiguan. We are very proud of this because safety has a long tradition at Volkswagen and will also be a guide for the development of new models in the future", explained member of the Board for Development for the Volkswagen Brand, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg.
