Welcome to VWWA Magazine!

With a long holiday in between editions I’ve had a much shorter time frame to put this edition together. Thank you to Ida Holm, Andrea Lawson, Julian Davey, Julieanne Simmons for contributing also my partner Jan for her proof reading skills and patience with me.

Some really nice pictures for you to enjoy in this one. I took my hand to a new car review too - the hire car from the recent holiday in Ireland. This is not something I would say that I have any experience at - but why not have a go? It was a good excuse to photograph a VW in some outstanding scenic locations. Enjoy.....!

AUGUST 2018 PICTURES JULIEANNE SIMMONS wordS IDA HOLM

A cruise for this event had not been planned as some people were going down on the Friday and others on the Saturday. Paul and I had packed the square on Friday so we were ready to leave after breakfast Saturday morning. We woke up to a beautiful sunny day and headed south. We arrived at Nanga Mil at midday to find about 4 kombis already set up. It was busy. The good weather had obviously made people come out for the weekend, but the guys who got there on the Friday had managed to secure a fire pit for us. We set up camp, had some lunch and a beer then we enjoyed the rest of the afternoon sun. More kombis arrived to spend the night.

The fire was lit and as soon as that sun was gone, we all huddled around to stay warm. It had dropped to 2 degrees the night before!! As usual, Generous John had snacks and biscuits to share with us all. He cooked up a feast of meat and veg in his homemade camp oven thing, plus a super delicious cake for dessert. Just before bedtime 2 huge kangaroos hopped in to Julian and Andrea’s porch and helped themselves to some cheese and crackers left on their table. Next morning was another beautiful day and as usual we were last to pack up and leave. Dwellingup is one of our favourite camps and we’re always looking forward to the next time.

MEMBER PROFILE

Andrea Lawson THIS MONTH WE FIND OUT A BIT ABOUT CLUB MEMBER:

Julian and I are both long time VW enthusiasts. My obsession started as a young kid when my uncle bought a convertible bug. I remember feeling pretty special being driven around in it with the wind in my hair and stars in my eyes. I knew one day I’d get my own. That day arrived not long after my 18th birthday – it was love at first sight when I set my eyes on a pink and purple mid 70’s Beetle in the Autotrader. My mum saw it first and with hindsight, wished she’d hidden the magazine! It was definitely one of the more distinctive cars in the village. A proper student car, it never failed to let me down. I recall finishing a factory night shift on uni break, and driving home in the early hours of the morning the car developed a mind of its own and started blasting the horn without any help from me. Needless to say, the cars in front of me at the traffic lights were less than impressed and I was lucky to get away unscathed! In its favour, it did get me and a bunch of mates from north-east England all the way down to Reading music festival, chewing through more oil than petrol.

I sold the Beetle to come to Australia, and promptly bought another in a dashing shade of red, in much better condition than the first. I love the shape of the bonnet, the curve of the roof, the sound and the smell; I’m a VeeDub junkie for sure.

My current 61 BUG is by far the best I’ve owned (and doubtless the best birthday pressie I’ll ever get!). Beautifully restored by previous owners, released into my care by Darrell and Donna, it runs like a dream. The VW Club WA is the first car club I’ve joined. It’s great catching up with the other members, checking out everyone’s rides, and swapping tips and tricks. For me, my favourite club event is the Munster cruise and camp. Its a fun drive and great to let your hair down at Bernie’s place and not worry about driving home - until the next morning ! I’m definitely a loud and proud VW owner, and look forward to the next club event to blast the cobwebs from 61 BUG.

LUCK OF THE IRISH “You’ll always want to take the Tiguan”

wordS & PICTURES JAMIE BARRETT

Ireland, the land of the emerald green scenic routes To explore this country we reserved a VW Golf (or similar) through one of the major international hire companies prior to our arrival into Dublin this August. At the collection desk we avoided the dreaded extra add ons - such as “Do you want to reduce your excess? Will you be needing wifi in the car? We were pleasantly surprised to be told we have upgraded you to the larger class of vehicle as we have no Golfs. A brand new Diesel model Tiguan was presented to us at no extra cost - What good luck! The Tiguan at first glance was a bigger Golf. With its higher driving position and greater visibility with the extra window panels in the front and rear corners was perfect for our 9 night sight seeing driving holiday. While on the subject of glass the sunroof was the full front to back (much like what is found in a Samba kombi) this also included an electrically controlled sun shade to keep the beaming sun off our heads.

LUCK OF THE IRISH

Having driven newer Volkswagens this was nothing new in terms of drive and feel. Everything was where it should be. The Tiguan base model does have some nice little extras like a cooled glove box, tray storage under the front seats, and the LED dashboard display. As a confident parker the park assist was used for fun only but the 360 degree view of your surroundings was very handy to ensure our bond was returned in full.

lane. The steering wheel literally turns away from the line you are crossing. The brake assist was not needed luckily. The adaptive cruise control was used regularly (automatically changes speed based on the vehicle in front) this made motorway driving a pleasure.

Other features that impressed were the safety additions. At first this caught me off guard “Lane Keeping Assist”! If you are not familiar with this technology the car has eyes and helps you from unintentionally wandering into another

Some of the roads like the “Healy Pass” were so curvy and open I wish the upgrade was to a Golf GTI Performance. But with the edges close and the drops steep the Tiguan was a sensible car to be in!

I did notice how quiet the diesel engine was and how little road noise made it into the cabin on the open road It was a dream.

The Healy Pass

One of the slogans on Volkswagen advertising material is:

“You’ll always want to take the scenic route” If you ever do a scenic driving holiday my slogan to you is “You’ll always want to take the Tiguan”

winter weather - apparently Perth’s wettest winter in 15 years.

It was an early morning start at Singleton Beach car park, and a fantastic contrast with older and newer vehicles, ranging from an immaculate Karmann Ghia, a newbie silver Beetle, a T5 California Camper with all the bells and whistles (including a kitchen sink!), three bay window campers and a couple of lovely older bugs.

A

f ter saying our good mornings and checking out each other’s pride and joy, we made a timely departure to head north along the coast to Fremantle and the Captain Munchies meet up point. The collective maintained a lovely formation until Coogee where we were split by traffic.

Rowley split Ute heading in the opposite direction – maybe for a sneaky coffee pit stop, before regrouping at Captain Munchies. There were plenty more VeeDubs waiting patiently for us to arrive. Five Beetles managed to park up in colour formation to stunning effect, as well as a side by side comparison between an old split screen and a modern T5 camper sporting the same colour scheme. A lovely red Porsche 356 came along for the ride.

Collecting Sean, Amy and family in their bay window from alongside the Coogee surf club, we continued up the coast to South Fremantle to lots of waves from passersby, avoiding the worst of the speed bumps on South Terrace for those The expanded group departed Captain Munchies bound for the City Beach that travel low! rendezvous point. egroupping at City beach bought an opportunity to spot clean the kombi (thanks to the kids) and reattach the gear knob, which decided to part ways with the gear stick mid drive. The numbers swelled to 25, with vehicles on display including a T25, a pop-top bay window, oval window Beetle and a ‘way 2 cool’ dual cab bay window Ute, plus a historic plate blue Beetle belonging to Ida and Dave.

Turning left onto Ocean Reef Road, a surprise RBT crew lay in wait - thankfully all were waved through to continue the journey northwards to Mindarie Marina.

The rest of the drive was easy cruising to our final destination, with plenty of room at Mindarie to park up and admire the rides. It was here that ‘SCR EEN’ might have regretted his earlier exuberance with a thrown fanbelt and smoking hot engine. A Way 2 Cool (Kim) led the charge north small crowd gathered to offer support and from City Beach along the coast, passing words of wisdom whilst the engine cooled through Scarborough where ‘Scr een’ and fan belt was refitted. tested his new push-rods against a Golf GTI and a Harley..more on this later! Heading along West Coast Drive the convoy attracted plenty of attention from the joggers, beach goers, dog walkers and surfers. We had an early exit from the cruise with an unlucky breakdown at Hillary’s Boat Harbour – hopefully close enough to a refreshment stop and an easy fix?

The club managed to snag a pristine spot for lunch at the Indian Ocean Brewing Co. and sample a few of the finest craft beers and lunch offerings whilst trading some friendly VW banter. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed a well-organised day with lots of friendly faces. Thanks to the club committee and the beautiful weather for a successful day.
