WhoopAss VW vs Mini

Jamie Barrett

As any club/business moves with the times things change. This will be the last “ViaWest” magazine...... No don’t panic. We will still have a club magazine every other month it’ll just have a new title. We have been looking at our current (and old) logos, badges stickers, merchandise designs and ranges and we are refreshing and updating. So watch this space. We have been looking through the club archives and found some lovely items, artwork, bad joke cuttings and some very interesting documents. Plus some nostalgic pictures of previous events and members. What was evident is the activity the committee took on is only different today by the type of events and members involved.

Ross Booth Memorial

Fairbridge Festival

I found plenty of the previous editors comments asking for stories, pictures and things (from you the members - Yes you, reading this) to contribute to the magazine. Get fingers to keyboards and email me at viawest@vwclubwa.com with some pictures, stories, road trip or whatever you think others in the club would like to read - It’ll make this mag all the more interesting.

ENSURE YOU ARE FOLLOWING OUR PAGE TODAY.

Presidents Spot Dear Members and Readers,

Many of you will know that I own Kombis and that they are a bit lower than standard height. This does cost me financially as I can’t put them on club concessional licence and it also stops me from going up curbs and anywhere with sharp inclines like petrol station driveways! Some of you may ask why? Its because I love the stability and look. ‘ It is refreshing though, to jump into the family Landcruiser every now and then and pretty much go where I like without having to worry about a bump in the road! Recently I went along on a 4WD Sand Course in the Cruiser, run by Western Wilderness. I really enjoyed driving up the boggy sand tracks in the bush to spots where the Kombi would never make it. We were in good company though, as Glynn, who runs the courses, had a well equipped Amarok that performed extremely well in all conditions. Back to the club update. I really enjoyed the Ross Booth Memorial cruise and it was lovely to learn more about Ross on a personal level. Thank you Lindsay for your words on the day. Also a big thank

you goes out to Alison and Justin for bringing his cherished Beetle along for us to see once more. I am proud to say that the clubs bank account and memberships are at an all time high. We are in a very strong position for future generations to benefit from the hard work and effort that has been put in by the committee over recent years. It’s a pleasure to see the engagement at our events and gatherings between new and existing members. I’m proud of how you all involve the new comers and make them welcome. Now is the time for some of the bystanders to consider getting involved with the club. Help free up some of the long standing committee members. The AGM is not far off.

HARDLY RUNS words & images LEWIS MILL

About 30 years ago a shearer drove the Beetle to a job in Warralackin, Southern Cross where it broke down. It was driven into a wool shed so he could come back later and fix it, but that never happened.

It sat in the wool shed for 20 years. Eventually the shed fell down around the Beetle. It was left outside on the same farm for 10 more years in a paddock.

The Beetle was sold to his mate and it was taken to Pingelly so it could be restored for his granddaughter but he had too many jobs‌that was my gain.

spots and the paint will be left how it is‌57 years of patina!

This Volkswagen Beetle is my first project car and I am proud of it. Owning a VW is always a work in progress. It While the motor is the original all the steering, brakes and suspension has will remain close to my heart as it has been replaced. The original motor has been a father and son project where we had a quick top end rebuild and is still have spent countless hours restoring, the 6volt system. The amazing amount of discussing and sometimes arguing long minimal rust has made the restoration a into the night over it, but it has been lot easier, we only had to repair 2 small 100% worth it.

The smell of burning rubber and the noise of loud engines is common place on Wednesday nights at the Kwinana Motorplex. On the 18th April it was no different - the theme was Volkswagen and Mini. The usual fee of $60 is discounted to $20 on special nights like this. I can tell you from experience that it is the best 20 bucks you’ll ever spend.

Off the back of a recently repaired engine I wasn’t game enough to risk having my beloved Dub off the road again so I took advantage of sitting in the stands watching and taking pictures instead.

There were many late model Water-cooled Golfs and a couple of Passats making quick passes down the 1/4 mile track. Some were holding their own up against worked V8s. I’m sure it was surprising for the Holden and Ford drivers to have a “little Golf” keep up with (and in some cases pass) them.

There was a very tidy modified Silver MK1 Golf keeping up with those modern motors too. Plus Graham Tibbs in his 1954 Beetle representing the old school. Graham in the Beetle ran a quick time of 13.3 but getting traction was an issue for him. Still it was an amazing time for a car designed with a 30hp engine out of the factory.

Another Air-cooled trying his luck and having a whale of a time was Jethro in his stock late Bay Window Kombi. The smile on his face says it all........ Shame about his Ford Racing hoodie!

The Minis were looking cool and doing well out on the strip, but were no match for the Volkswagens.

The last two months of Alfreds meets have been busy ones..... Plenty of new vehicles making their debuts, including the two Beetle utes below. In fact there were 3 of these at last months meet. The weather has been fine plus if you’re too cold the fire is cranking. For me it is always a great night and never long enough to get around all the VDubs for a look. Nor enough time to chat with everyone.

A massive thank you must go out to those members who attended the Ross Booth Memorial run and made it a great success. With the weather forecast looking gloomy we were a little concerned that the numbers may drop significantly. As it turned out we had around 25 vehicles brave the weather and attend. We started the cruise from Captain Munchies in Fremantle where about 19 cars formed a convoy. Cruising through the Cappuccino Strip is always good fun with the vehicles getting plenty of attention. On our way down the coast we drove through intermittent heavy showers, arriving at Singleton to be greeted by the rest of the crew and the beautiful 1959 Ross Booth Beetle.

There were some formalities with Justin Eddy saying a few words along with an old friend of Ross’s, Lindsay Preece, entertaining us with a few stories about Ross and his Beetle.

Ten vehicles camped overnight enjoying the generous hospitality of the Brewery. The leftovers from lunch where consumed around the campfire as memories were being made. It was wonderful to meet Alison & Justin and to see them enjoying the Beetle. We hope that we see them at more events now that they have found their Volkswagen Family.

Some minor repairs were carried out to the cargo door aperture. The front bumper and a few other bits have been sandblasted and primed.
