Road Trippin’

SO much to squeeeeeeze into this edition! We have had so many great events to report on. I have been time poor what with attending the cruises and camp outs plus I broke my bus! (to be exact a push rod). She’s up in the air and I am working towards having her back on the road again soon. Its not a nice feeling knowing I can’t just jump in and go for a drive. The wait for parts and machining gives me a chance to catch up with this Edition. I hope you enjoy it. Our events calendar isn’t as well completed as we would like. This is due to the excitement of Day of the Volkswagen, Munster, The Classic Car Show etc. Be assured, the committee is working hard to put the final details in place for the cruises, shows and camping events. The dates ARE pencilled in so get them in your diaries.

Dear Members and Readers,

You may think we harp on about Alfreds a lot but you know what.... Its a great night. For me it’s meeting and chatting to new people, the flexibility of coming and going when you please, plus the food is pretty good too. Last month I took my camera along and had some good old light painting fun. We did a night cruise a while back and I am keen to do some more - Night shots gives you the ability to manipulate and create unique pieces such as below (this shot only had slight editing to lighten it for printing). I really enjoy this so if you are keen to get out one late evening I’m up for shooting your ride and getting you involved. 0408 183396. Its been crazy busy behind the scenes with Munster, CMC Classic Car Show, Merchandise, Festivals, getting the new

Facebook page up to speed, chasing sponsors, putting this mag togehter. Can you believe we are already working on Day of the Volkwagen for December this year! This year we celebrate 80 years of the Beetle and we are keen to have many at the events and cruises. So if you have a Beetle we want them out and featured, we also want your stories and how this model has had an impact on your life. I grew up around cars as my Grandad bought and sold them for a living - I was very familiar with all makes and models from a young age and just loved cars. But after a trip to Bug Jam in the early 90’s I had to have one as my first car!

How long have you had a passion for VWs As long as I can remember I think. Both sides of my family have always had one around somewhere for most of my life. What VWs do you own Now, a green ’05 New Beetle commuter and an off-white ’73 Superbug (the nearlyfinished project!). In the past, almost all the aircooled models and a few waterpumpers.

Best VW experience Drag racing a small Beetle, driving my Square all over the Territory and Kimberley, cruising a Kombi panel all through the Wheatbelt, it’s all good really. Most likely tinkering away at something in the shed, that’s my favourite place to be.

Earliest memory of VWs Not sure which is first, so I have two. The first when I was very young is sitting up next to my Opa in his Low-light ’60s panel as he delivered orders all over Perth in the late ’60s/early ’70s, he was one of Favourite VW owned Dunno, they all have character, possibly my the first to work for the Dutch Biscuit Man ’76 Kombi panel with auto 2L, but probably company here in WA. my ’73 Squareback with 1750 stroker. Second I remember looking across at my dear old Nanna as we drove to church in Favourite VW Club meet/cruise to date Kalamunda in her Karmann Ghia, she was The last one was really cool, but I like smiling and waving (very regally! Hahaha!) looking forward to the next one the best. at people, scarf in the morning breeze. I think I was about 4 or 5.

A Good VW story My eldest son (grown up now) HATED driving in cars when he was a toddler, he would cry and sob endlessly on every trip, it was just a nightmare. He once sobbed and screamed on one trip, almost without a break, from Darwin all the way down to Adelaide and then on up to Sydney in a V8 Chrysler. It got to the point where I would take the bus or train and walk miles just to avoid driving him anywhere while I was in Sydney and Melbourne for a couple of years. A family friend suggested a picnic trip from Melbourne up into the Dandenongs

in Spring, just a beautiful part of the world, really almost idyllic. I hesitated, but then said yes coz they offered me their almost new low-km Superbug to drive, such a lovely little thing. I piled the 2 kids into the back seat, and yep, he started crying almost immediately, until I turned the key and the soft “dak-dak-dak” noise rumbled through the back and he stopped! With a look of shock, he turned around to look out the back, over the back seat, then turned back with a lovely smile and started laughing, it was the most amazing thing. We drove for nearly 3 hours through the hills that day and he smiled the whole day.

I want to be able to lean my elbow on the roof easily, and look back into the supercharger injection hat at roof height on the little high-spinning baby stroker in the back while waiting in the staging lanes.

CONCESSIONAL LICENSE INFO Hi members, how often do you use your vehicle? Obviously we would love you to say LOTS!! But for those of you that only get to the odd run here and there, maybe putting your vehicle onto concessional licence would work for you. It does restrict when you can use your vehicle and also what you can do to it as the code 404 was written to preserve stock vehicles. This does

mean that your vehicle is required to remain STOCK to qualify to be put onto concessional licence. Here is a flow chart to help you decide if this scheme would suit you. For more information or to put your vehicle onto concessional licence contact our guru Dave Moore at: licence@vwclubwa.com

O

n a fine Saturday afternoon a bunch of us met at Hillaries Carpark No.30 and set off in convoy in the direction of Captain Munchies in Freo. We got broken up along the route but it didn’t spoil the cruise. With ocean views for parts of the journey it sure looked tempting to pull over and go for a dip. Kombis were the flavour of the day as it was a sleep over event. Running a bit behind schedule we met with the

patiently waiting crew in Fremantle. A quick group selfie in front of the VDubs then we were off again, this time in the direction of Munster Garage. We turned plenty of heads and had lots of finger pointing on the Market Street cafe strip. Poor Ida had a hiccup at the lights nearing the destination. Darren and Paul helped get her off the road in a safe spot and Darren the gentleman he is stayed with Ida. The rest of us piled in the gate at Munster and found a good spot on the level ground. Darren and Ida arrived not long after!

nce the individual camps were set up and bottles popped, it was the best view. The light was great and some of the unwitting displays were awesome. In the Garage we were presented with a lovely model car display by the kids of Munster and a couple of Project build, beautiful and unique Karman Ghias were on display which got plenty of attention.

Later in the evening after the sun went down the band “4 Below Zero” busted out a great mix of covers. It was a relaxed crowd but we all appreciated the entertainment - Thanks so much you guys rocked (the band not the audience). We where treated to images projected onto the big screen featuring pictures of the last 6 years events that the Club had put on. Seeing the youngsters in the pictures grow up over the years made us realise how much of a family we are.

A

fter the awesome sounds from the band, music continued from the back of the Splitscreen Ute and we congregated for plenty of chat. Then before bed we held an Auction for the canvas printed artwork that Sean Douglas drew to promote the event. All proceeds from the sale went to our chosen charity Save Our Sons. The auctioneer did an amazing job and squeezed a whopping $220 from the successful bidder. We had prints on sale too and a total of $325 went to the Charity. In the morning, after the animal calls, breakfast was provided and the BBQ was fired up. The smell of Eggs and Bacon lured the campers out of bed. A huge thank you yet again to Bernie, Annalea, Nate, and Luka for having us over for yet another “Munster”.

le t e e B n e g a w s lk o V e h t 80 Years of

In the 1930s the idea of a ‘people’s car’ (volks-wagen in German) that was affordable for the regular working family began to take hold. Adolf Hitler was a firm believer in the people’s car and announced it as a key policy platform within months of taking power in Germany in 1933. The big German companies, such as Mercedes-Benz and Opel, hated the idea and failed to deliver ‘the cheap car’, so then Hitler established a nationalised project. Ferdinand Porsche was the lead engineer and in 1938, after years of development, his team unveiled the finished product – the Volkswagen Type 1 Kafer (German for Beetle). The car was a two door, rear engine design, powered by an air-cooled flat four motor. The same year Hitler laid the corner stone for the largest and most modern automobile factory in Europe in the town of Wolfsburg. Full production was expected in 1939. Because the factory had built military versions of the Beetle during the war, known as the Kubelwagen and the aquatic Schwimmwagen, the Allies decided to dismantle the factory. By good fortune, the British officer charged with the liquidation, Major Ivan Hirst, saw in the Beetle an opportunity to satisfy the

British Occupation Forces’ desperate need for vehicles and a contract for 20,000 Volkswagens in exchange for food rations was agreed. The factory was in poor shape from bombing but most of the tooling had been stored in bunkers so production was soon underway and by the end of 1945 more than 1000 cars had rolled out of the factory. The British never liked the Beetle and thought of it only as a stop gap, but the Beetle proved to be extremely tough, surviving terrible abuse and poor maintenance. The Beetle’s robustness, low maintenance and easy manners soon attracted orders from all over war ravaged Europe.

Hirst handed over the reins to a German managing director, Heinz Nordhoff, who’s mantra was slow and steady improvement of the Beetle, and by 1955 the 1 Millionth Beetle had been produced. Porsche’s Beetle platform proved easily adaptable to other use. It was expanded into the familiar Kombi van, a utility, panel van, the sporty looking Karmann Ghia coupe and cabriolet, and later into the Type 3 series. Even the first Porsche sports cars were built from Beetle components. Wherever the Beetle went, it sold – in the millions! 21 million of them. Happy 80th Birthday to the Volkswagen Beetle.

1938 - 2018

The Volkswagen Club of WA Inc. was founded in 1955, the same year that the millionth Beetle had rolled off the production line and two years before Australian Beetle had even started! The club welcomes all Volkswagen enthusiasts, be they interested in the classic rear engine, air-cooled Volkswagens to the modern water cooled Volkswagens. Due to declining sales through the 70s, Volkswagen developed the front wheel drive water-cooled Golf closely followed by the smaller Polo. German Beetle production stopped in 1978, but production continued in Brazil and Mexico until 2003. Australia’s first official Beetle import was in 1953 but at least two army surplus Beetles reached here earlier. Like many countries around the world, Volkswagen set up a local production facility in Clayton,Victoria in 1957. Australian built Beetles have some unique features and many locally made parts, with some pressings featuring a kangaroo logo. Over the years this iconic car has been loved, modified, converted, made into a movie star and is arguably one of the most recognisable vehicles of all time. A 1999 poll placed the Beetle 4th most influential car of the 20th century.

CITY TO SURF CRUISE

Sunday 18th February 2018

The City to Surf cruise concept is an easy one to

organise. No bookings, just a pre chosen meeting spot and a planned route to Fremantle Fishing Boat harbour. This relaxed style of event is perfect for a Sunday and the turn out was great too.

We managed to stay reasonably close together

on the trip. We left Vic Park and headed over the Causeway and onto Riverside Drive at a nice slow pace. We got a good run down Stirling Highway before our turn off towards Cottesloe.

The Sculptures by the Sea event was on but didn’t

hinder us (did it G-Mac?).... Haha. All good. I think that our “4 Wheel Sculptures” drew as much attentions as those on the beach. words JAMIE BARRETT images JAN AHEARN

CITY TO SURF CRUISE

We enjoyed the fresh coast air and rolled into the carpark near Captain Munchies to

re-group. We didn’t stick around there long as the belly was rumbling for many. We did the usual Market Street route through Fremantle and headed for Fishermans Wharf.

It was decide that we go and see Elsie the VW Splitscreen Ute in Little Creatures. We

grabbed a couple of the empty tables and filled them. It wasn’t long before the Pizzas and Seafood arrived washed down with a bevy.

A great mix of new people and VWs made for a lovely afternoon.

pulled off the best event to date. A smooth run in the gates and not much hassle to leave once the show was over helped make it a relaxed day..... Except our organising! We (I) had fun moving vehicles around and coming up with ideas but thanks to Di with her idea to move the tent helped get us in line. Daves focus is now the front of Gulliver. He started by cutting off the remnants of the A pillars. Dave had “classic fab panels in stock but only the top part of the lower repair section. He used his skills and fabricated the bottom half of the lower section. Clamping them in place to ensure correct alignment before welding them in situ.

Dave hung the front doors and clamped on the dog legs to check alignment. The front inner valance was clamped in to position and then welded on.

The dog legs were then welded in followed by the front floor sections. The front outer valance was then clamped on and welded in to position.
