Welcome to VWWA Magazine!

Wow, how did I cram all of this into one edition. With over 200 vehicles at Day of the Volkswagen sadly many of the pictures are on the floor of the cutting room! If there’s spelling mistakes and dodgy artwork it was the long evenings and red eyes that contributed. On the subject of errors just a clarification and apology to the lovely couple Ida and Paul (not Ida and Dave) there was a bit of a mix up of names in the Dwellingup article. Seriously, this is another edition where I had so much good material and photographs to play around with - It was a pleasure to put it together - thank you to all the contributors. I couldn’t chose a vehicle for the front cover - so I put them all on there. Thank you Steve Parry for the awesome aerial shots!

We’ve had some really nice articles and member profiles sent in, these make this mag so much more interesting for the readers. Keep them coming. Enjoy! We had an amazing response at Day of the Volkswagen with 25 new members joining our club and community. That brings us to a record high 240 members. How fantastic is that?! We appreciate you all and thank you for your support. Without you we wouldn’t have a club. We wish our new members a very warm welcome and we look forward to getting to know you at future club events. Jan Ahearn 240 Members Membership Officer

Presidents Spot Dear Members and Readers, Busy VW times are over for many of you now that the “Day of the Volkswagen Personal Deadline to get your VW to where you wanted for the show” has passed. Well done to those who worked tirelessly to bring your project along to the Big Day. Welcome to all the new members (and there’s dozens of you) Thank you for officially joining the club as financial supporters. You’ve joined a community of friends and also contributed to the security of the clubs future. Its worth mentioning that the efforts of the committee have put us in the best position we’ve ever been in. Not only are we in the best financial position ever - but we have the most engaged members as far back as I can remember. With your generosity $970 was raised for our chosen charity Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation. They are working to find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy which is a muscle wasting condition, and raising awareness is key in their fight. This money will make a huge difference in the lives of those living with Duchenne, so thank you for your support.

A special thanks to all involved with Day of the Volkswagen. To everyone that organised, booked, collected, made, emailed, telephoned, printed, designed, thought of, dropped off, baked, put up, fund raised, erected, pulled down, manned, met, created, towed... A massive thanks! Also thank you to everyone who attended the show, the feedback so far has been really nice and humbling. It was a huge success, something that I measure with the amount of smiles and lovely conversations on the day, and then there’s the vehicles.... Wow!

Enjoy the break, stay safe, wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Jamie Barrett Club President

The team pulled off yet another fantastic event. Well done!

Walking home from primary school in the late 70’s I passed a customised VW Beetle, painted jet black, whale tail with what seemed like a massive zoom tube sticking out of the back. It was always a competition with my sister who could spotto it first to win the first round of punch buggy ‘n’ pinch van. These early memories obviously made a lasting impression on me and my bank balance for many years to come! Fast forward to the early 90’s, waiting for the arrival of Volksworld magazine at the local newsagents provided hours of day dreaming until I finally bought a VW Beetle of my own. It was an early 70’s 1300L but soon underwent some performance upgrades plus some 90’s custom modifications that were so popular at the time. Several bugs came and went and a rather nice RHD 21 window Samba that I should have kept.

‘Mirage’

The final bug I owned before leaving for Australia was a 90’s show car, built by Thump! Thump! - Thump! Thump! were responsible for creating the one and only “Billabug” too.

The ‘Mirage’ Beetle that I owned had a removable targa top, floating seats, 356 style bumpers, solenoid doors, fuchs wheels, plus a long list of custom touches and it collected a few trophies along the way.

Juli a

ns f irst car 70’s 130 0L

Once in Australia and after several years’ hiatus, I started to feel the need to drive an old Volks again, so when an early Bug popped up for sale on Gumtree it was snapped up. Trying hard not to relive my 90’s VW scene youth, I decided to go with some subtle custom touches on ‘Kermit’ like fitting Porsche 911 headlights, flashing LED semaphores and of course lowered.

Having a partner who is also in to VW’s helped when adding a 15-window Split Screen SA import to our growing VW fleet courtesy of fellow club members Darrel and Donna. The bus is enjoyed by the whole family (including the dog) for family camping trips down south and we are still to teach the kids how to play punch buggy! We plan to keep our VW’s for the long term and try to resist the temptation to buy any more but I’m still that little kid walking home from primary school.

ilson Park in South Fremantle was once known as the “Rec”. The Park was also a popular camp ground where you could rent tents for 10 shillings per week. Wilson Parks expanse was also a place where fishermen repaired their nets. If you were there on Sunday 2nd December you would have caught a look at this years Volkswagen gathering. Lots of planning and work goes into this show and it certainly paid off with record attendance. We were rewarded on the day with amazing blue skies, sunshine and so many happy faces. We were ambitious by asking our supporter Shannons Insurance for 200 numbered stickers to use on the day and none went to waste. I was secretly even more ambitious and proved that by pulling out a chalk pen that I had incase we ran out. The pen got used for the final 6 “extras” that just

managed to get in before the entrance gate was closed at 10am. The Volunteer traffic management team did a stellar job parking the Volksies - trying as best as possible to keep each type together. A patch in front of the Club marquee was earmarked for rows of Beetles, which happened to include many special models. With both the end of production worldwide and the 80 Year Birthday it was fitting to have them front and centre.

he show officially opened at 10am. Chilled out tunes were playing from the back of a new Amarok from Wangarra Volkswagen. Coffees were flowing from the Single Cab Ute and everyone got into the spirit of the day. Many locals and beach goers passed through with wide eyes and big gazes.

We were privileged to have some former executive committee members present, including Ray Willis, Peter & Trish Summerfield and Bob Lafferty

The club marquees were busy with sales of club merchandise and guests of the day becoming official supporters of the club by joining up as paid members. Our membership officer Jan and her helpers were very busy with 25 new members signing up and supporting the club.

COOK

SO YOU THINK YOU CAMP The cooking comp “So you think you camp cook” at the show, was a hit and so much fun. Devilles Kitchen, Simmo’s but no icecream, El Scorchio, and Bubbas Kitchen cooked it out over a 30-minute period. Some couples finding it hotter in the kitchen than others! Judges Tom and Iduna tasted the presented offerings and scored on; Entertainment value, taste, effort and presentation. The winners - team El Scorchio with their Spanish dish pipping Simmo’s but no icecream by 1 point to take out first prize. I personally had lots of fun presenting and tasting the dishes myself. Well done to everyone who participated and contributed to the show!

Rounding up the show was the winner’s presentations. Each received an awesome limited edition Retro Esky, which was printed up with the Artwork for the show. Half way through the presentations the raffle was drawn and a short charity Auction was held. $970 was raised for our chosen charity, Save our Sons. A special mention to Bryce and Lesley for their generous winning bid of $280 for the DoVW 2018 Esky - How they got it home on their trike I don’t know. It was such a fantastic and enjoyable day. The best Day of the Volkswagen ever!

This year we encouraged the owners of the displayed vehicles to submit their choices of their favourites in each of the 13 vehicle categories. After they had parked up, the yellow voting slips were in hand and all the entrants were scouting the Park for their favourites. Once completed and handed in they could collect a special printed show bag also containing a limited edition Stubby Holder.

MOORE

DAVE

Welding & Fabrication

Dave Moore has had a long-standing relationship with classic cars. When he was 14 years old his mum found him a job at a local garage that specialised in classic cars. It often had E-Type Jaguars and Jensen Interceptors in there. Someone had donated a picture from the 1920s with a bunch of Model T Fords lined up outside the garage proving how long the business had been around! Daves love and affection for classic cars continues right up to this recent purchase of a Daimler V8. His passion for Volkswagens is relatively new. Restoring a Single Cab Split Screen Ute was his first introduction into welding rust repairs on old VW’s. Since arriving in Australia from the UK, Dave worked at Malaga Rust Repairs for seven years where he picked up extra skills. He then moved into Reaper Customs. The owners of the business closed up shop and he was left wondering what to do and where to go so he started his own business Dave Moore Restorations. Three years later Dave has built himself a business based around restoring Volkswagens, mainly Split Screen Kombis. No job is too small or too big. Recently, a 15 Window Kombi has left his shed fully assembled and painted, after arriving as the usual rust-bucket with plenty of knocks and bangs.

One thing he has learnt along the way is to have the right tools for the job and the right number of them too. He must have about 50 G clamps in various sizes. Just look at his trolley loaded with air-tools. If anyone thinks they could do a home restoration themselves yes you could but how much quicker would Dave do it by having all these tools at hand?! His preferred choice of work is welding chassis and bodywork. He loves seeing the finished product and enjoys the challenge of putting them back together as close to the original manufacturing way as possible. His eclectic choice of background music whilst welding away is as diverse as his historic vehicles. Dave has been quoted as saying “If I could take a pill instead of stopping for lunch I would. As it gets in the way of a good days work! Current projects in his shed are a Dual Cab Split Screen Ute, an 11 window Split Screen, a Convertible Beetle, his own project Gulliver and a Kombi Caravan!

GERMAN CAR DAY

ANTARTICA WHITE

SPACE BLUE My 1969 VW beetle has been in my family for 46 years. At the time of purchase, my father was heavily in to Beetles and at one stage had 5 sitting around out Karrinyup home. Many times people would turn up to the house asking for VW parts - sent there by a local workshop. It had 2 previous owners and in the second half of 1972 (the year we purchased it), it travelled 15000 km’s. Much of that was a trip to Port Headland when my parents squeezed 2 adults and 3 children in to it for the return journey.

It never missed a beat apart from almost hitting a bull on the way home standing in the middle of Great Northern Highway while driving overnight. It was sold new by Regents motors in Osborne Park and had all of the following 4 years of services completed there as well. All of the original books are still in the car. It had an original paint colour of Space Blue (a light blue) which was specific to Australian made Beetles at the Clayton factory in Victoria. wordS & PICTURES ROD MARTON

was easier for her to drive at the time with added power steering.

“The Beetle did not move from that day on”

My mother passed away in 2002 and the Beetle was under a carport but exposed on the passenger side to the weather. It fell in to very poor condition, especially down one side. In 2015, I talked my father in to transferring the licence to my name. In 1984 I learned to drive in this car and also took my driving test in it. That was my He had continued to pay the registration second attempt as the first was in a driving for all of those years hoping one day to get it running again. My mechanic and a school Datsun Sunny recommended by a Fremantle body shop both recommended friend and I never liked the feel of driving I find a different starting body as it was in it. My assessor asked why I had changed from the Beetle and I believed it had to be such a poor state. done in a school car. He told me I could ......That started the 3 years of rebuild. be assessed in any roadworthy car so a week later, I returned in the Beetle and proudly walked out with a license in my hand. A year later, my brother began his driving lessons in the Beetle but was not quite as successful, smashing into the back of another car on his second lesson and never got in the driver’s seat again. In the late 80’s, my father resprayed the bug to a white in the back of my uncle’s house. It was a quick job and one we laugh about now that we have taken the time to fully restore the car to see all of the short cuts he took back then. About this time I met my wife. I took her for our very first date in the Beetle. She must have loved it (but I remember her wondering about the noise) as she stayed with me? Soon after I bought a 1969 Kombi as my first car and kept it for the next 15 years. My mother continued to drive the Beetle visiting me in Pingelly (about 2 hours south east of Perth) regularly commuting in it. The Beetle was parked up in 1998 when a few issues in the fuel system and heads surfaced. My mother bought a Corolla - it

Apart from some of the rust work and the final spray, I can honestly say we completed all of the work as a father/son team. The chassis and engine were rebuilt first and the engine roared once again 19 years after she last started. The body work then became the goal and a further 18 months went past before the chassis and body were reunited. The paint colour was a tough decision. I remembered both colours on this car - the “space blue” and the white respray. For that reason, the

two tone which incorporated the 2 x 1969 colours (Antarctica white and space blue) in original epoxy was the decision. Every decision on the rebuild was to bring the car back to what it was when my mother drove it - not the original. The 1679cc engine remained, the dent my brother put in the front apron and bumper is still there as a memory, the Monza exhaust and cut down gear shift is exactly what my Mother drove around with for many years and that is what was returned.

ANTARTICA WHITE

SPACE BLUE “Alfred’s seemed the best place to cruise with my father for his 79th birthday”

Every day of work was also documented in a one off design VW maintenance logbook to enjoy later when my father and I reminisce and read through it. Even the items inside the car are still there from the 1970’s including my mother’s perfume, newspaper clippings and an invoice for a full service - totalling $5.17. April 20 this year was the first road test - to my mother’s grave with my wife to finish the beetle journey. Of the entire car, only the bonnet, one wheel arch, the front apron, the headliner, door rubbers, exhaust and rear light covers could not be saved. The rest is the original car. The only remaining item to get working perfectly is the horn (which I am sure is a common talking point with many Beetle owners) but fingers crossed it will be 100% soon. The next car to enjoy rebuilding is a VW type 3 square back which fell in to our hands and we couldn’t say no. It also needs help.

Alfred’s seemed the best place to cruise with my father for his 79th birthday and meet other club members for the first time. We have really enjoyed the chats and information and look forward to longer club cruises in the future. wordS & PICTURES ROD MARTON

So after a few busy months Dave has managed to find some time to give Gulliver some attention. It was time to get Gulliver rolling, as the front beam had previously been sandblasted and painted all that was needed was for it to be assembled and installed.

Dave sandblasted and painted all the rear suspension components.

The gearbox was rebuilt by Mike the gearbox man some time ago, Dave gave it a lick of paint and then it was time to assemble the reduction hubs with new bearings and seals, then the whole gearbox and rear suspension was installed in Gulliver. The Brake drums were skimmed and shoes relined - then fitted with rebuilt wheel cylinders - we almost have brakes! We have put temporary wheels on to get him rolling. The engine has been installed to check clearances for exhaust. Still plenty of work to go - maybe DOVW 2019...?
