ith the Christmas season passing and New Year fast approaching I was thinking it was time to get away from the hustle and bustle. Jan was as excited as me. We loaded trusty MICRO with food, drinks, and fuel for 3 days and hit the South West Highway heading for uncharted land with no actual destination in mind. We took plenty of back roads and ended up at Honeymoon Pool. Well we headed straight out of there! It was busier than Booragoon shopping centre carpark in the pre Christmas days. A quiet spot some 20kms past there suited us heaps more. In the morning after a short bush walk we headed deeper into the countryside. Keen to escape we headed down a very corrugated unsealed road for about 6kms and found a lovely spot near a fresh water swimming hole with plenty of shade. We saw so much native wildlife including, Carnabies, Roos by the dozen, a quail, emus, monitor lizards, blue tongues, tawny frog mouth, some of these creatures are quite rare to see. What was rarer were air-cooled VW’s. ........We didn’t see one in the whole 700kms round trip!

Presidents Spot Dear Members and Readers, Well what can I say - Day of the Volkswagen was by far the best one yet! Easier to manage, relaxed, a great diverse turnout with plenty of new comers and an amazing effort by all involved in making the day happen and be such a success. We signed up record new members on the day too A big welcome to you and for some the first ViaWest magazine hitting your inbox or mail box - hope you enjoy this bumper packed edition. We never intend to make a profit from any of our events but due to our very generous sponsors we came out much better off after the event, and in a very stable position for our future generations. On behalf of the committee and you (our members) a huge thank you to all the sponsors of the day.

Happy New Year to you all. We have some really cool events on the horizon which we would love to see you attend. A Sunday afternoon coastal cruise and Munster 6 - (A favourite for many) are not far off. Our new Facebook page is up and running so be sure to have a look and follow the Official “Volkswagen CLUB of Western Australia (Inc.) since 1955” page to stay up to date with our activities and events.

This year is 80 Years of the Beetle, essentially Volkswagen! So some special events will be held to mark this amazing achievement. I have been reading up on my VW history I encourage you to look at the history on Wikipedia. Spilt Oval Beetle owners reading this please get in touch with me. Plus ALL the Beetle owners out there - we need you out in numbers this year to do us all proud Our chosen charity “Save our Sons” also and show off one of the most influential benefited from the DoVW. Many were classic cars of all time. keen to take home one of the awesome Retro Eskis so it was easy for young Logan Bayley to sell plenty of raffle tickets - He Club President rounded up $315 for the charity. Jamie Barrett The cash was well spent. Klair Bayley held a support group at Kings Park Botanical Cafe for Mums with newly diagnosed sons. “8 Mums attended along with two little ones, the money raised paid for morning tea and a bunch of flowers for each to brighten their day” (with some money left over for a follow up group meet). Klair you are amazing and thanks so much for looking after the kids activities on the day - You are an inspiration to us all.

Since 1959-60. Friends had them. I appreciated the low cost and go-anywhere capabilities of Beetles. My first VW was a 1956 Oval window followed by other Beetles, T2 Westfalias, a Variant then a love affair with T3 Syncros Best VW experience In 2011-2012 I drove 25,000km over 10-1/2 months in my `86 Syncro Westy on a solo 4wd adventure in the Andes of Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. My goal was to try to trace the spine of the Andes as much as possible and to drive the full length of the fabled Route 40 in Argentina. My route varied from sea level to over 5,000m elevation with roughly 15,000km of the journey on gravel roads and 4wd tracks. Best VW you have ever owned My current 1986 VW Syncro Westfalia Camper. Purchased in the US and seriously prepared for South America travel. What a delight to drive !!!!

e are contacted by many organisations, business, and individuals asking if we know of suitable vehicles for various events etc. But this request by Max Constanduros from the RAC was special in our opinion. Max’s vision was Santas WA Holiday. “The idea was

to have a van (preferably a Kombi) with presents and surf board or two on the roof and some other typical beach objects. It has to be Bright Yellow” .........We had the

perfect Kombi in mind..... Oldeyella. We put Lyn Syme the owner of Oldeyella in touch with Max.

I

t was arranged that Oldeyella was dropped off at the RAC for the decorations and sound system to be fitted. Lyn gave the privilege of driving to her son Greg Peters, with passengers wife Michelle, but most importantly Lyns granddaughter Abbey. Greg said it was a once opportunity to drive and be Perth Christmas Pageant. them proud and performed the night.

in a lifetime a part of the Oldeyella did beautifully on

This all came at a cost. Oldeyella had to have the decorations and electrical equipment removed the following morning which meant she missed Day of the Volkswagen. On top of this cruising in 1st gear for such a long time added stress to the gearbox which has since been removed and rebuilt. Lyn said Abbey was on a high and told her class all about it!

Parking was tight however the layout (generally) by Marque was really well received. A huge line of Kombis lined the field. We had over 30 various moulds of Buggies. The trophy’s that were up for grabs were cool (pun intended) Retro Eskis with the neat artwork designed by Sean Douglas decaling their sides. The colour scheme was affiliated to the celebration of 50 Years of the rare Australian “Country Buggy”. 10 Buggies made it into the show with another lonesome one parked outside.

Judging was handed to the sponsors of the 13 categories. Everyone through the gate was in the running to collect an Eski. People’s choice was awarded to Gary Bulls ROWLEYS Ute. We were honored to have Ernst and Margerate Klenner come along for a look. There were plenty of second hand parts available along with other pop up stalls selling bits n bobs. Once the hard decisions were made some of the winners were moved up together in front of the club tent for everyone to see.

you for taking the time to present them for our pleasure. The club tent was kept busy all day selling the merchandise on offer and signing It was hard for some of the sponsors to new members up. We’ve had awesome feedback about this event – It had a really choose a winner but in the end it came down to a personal choice. ALFREDS AND PAIRS - JANUARY 2018 MEET The first Alfreds of the Year was a “cracker It just had a really nice vibe about it. Plenty of chat and new faces made for a wonderful night. The weather was warm and the Burgers where a 10/10. The 3 Splitscreen Kombis in attendance fluked parking next to each other and the evening light made them very attractive. Worth noting that all of them were delivery vehicles for local companies back in the day. It was a night of pairs! We had a pair of MKI Golfs, and a pair of Double Door Lowlight Panel Vans, a pair of Late Bay Window Panel Vans, a pair of Orange Manx Buggies and a Pair of Country Buggies. Two of our members Dave Essers and Jan Ahearn caught up for the first time in 43 years, they were school mates from Wundowie. The Jogjafestival is Indonesia’s biggest VW event. Held biannually in Jogjakata at the Exhibition centre. It’s a big affair. To give you some idea the door prize this time around was a fully restored Beetle. Bands fill the outdoor stage from morning to late, the carpark is full to bursting with VWs and their owners from all over the country, with people camping for its entirety. We had to check it out!

Graham Mcleod, recon for later hydration. Breakfast was Jamie Barrett, Graham Tibbs, Justin Bayley provided and the range of food was wide. Bernie Brix, Lucas” etc.. meant two things Gmac enjoyed the staple of fresh fruit with to us; a confirmation of the people on the mayo whilst we were all surprised to see trip and the scene set for the next 10 days. Jamie tucking into anchovy rice given his dislike of seafood. Good on you boys for Dragged from duty free we did make the trying new things, even if you didn’t really plane, settled into our routine early and at mean to! the third time of asking Tibbs was given a beer, rumour quickly spread and the lovely Arrival at the show was a quiet affair as the lady from Garuda was kept busy bringing us size sank in. We were early so we had plenty tepid Bintang! Then a few hours in Denpasar of time to have a look around the car park. airport before another flight to Yogyakarta, We expected some different stuff knowing what to do? .....Six Large Bintang please! that Indonesia was a big market for VW in Arriving late into “Jogja” the hotel roof top South America (rear corner windows with bar was calling (insert the inevitable) and Bay front windows and barndoor parts) but over the two days the deeper we looked the the next morning to the show!!! more we found! When I say we I mean the real VW perverts, Tibbs, Gmac and Bernie!

It was quickly evident that our Western Australian Day of the Volkswagen opening ceremony is, at the very least short and lacks the bowing of Jogja. There must have been a misunderstanding as the six clowns from Australia were seated in the VIP area, immediately behind the President of the Volkswagen Club of Indonesia, local minister for tourism, chief of Police and various other dignitaries’. We were given food, drink and an event programme and

allowed to enjoy an opening ceremony of substance that included traditional dance, drumming and speeches. Keep in mind that this is our first full day in Indonesia and throughout the ceremony the temperature and humidity increased exponentially and our Javanese is limited to ‘thank you’ and something Tibbs kept saying that must have been either cheeky or funny given the reaction it was getting. Once allowed inside and were greeted by.....

“It did take us the best part of the two-day show to look at everything”

And these were my highlights - Take a closer look

VW Aircooled Engine

It did take us the best part of the two-day show to look at everything, stopping only for incredibly tasty but mystery lunches across the road. Bernies vegetarian values were ‘tested’ for the first time in two days. The night between the two show days went as expected, the recon mission had been a success, Bali Hai was located and consumed in a number of places until all the cold beer had gone. It got messy for some not wanting to go into too much detail espressoless espresso martini’s were consumed, a swim in a closed pool and confusion between a toilet door and hotel room door led to Bernie having to

be let back into his room in his budgie smugglers and a wallet that stayed wet for the next 6 days. On day two, a couple of the group found a beer Kombi, which led to some questionable shirt purchases....

for the tell tale signs. Obviously we had to meet the man responsible for this work, take a bow Roysid of Smart Volksworks, a very interesting and skilled man who’s local garage was responsible for 22 of the cars at the show and the standard was exceptional. The conversation with Roysid lead to the answer of how we’d fill our time the day after the show until we flew into Bali. We were invited to see his workshop and meet his team. Now This last one had actually been almost accustomed to VIP treatment a car was entirely fabricated by hand, have a look sent for us and we were taken to see this.. The man responsible for making the magic happen... Roysid. That afternoon we flew to Bali, that’s another story if you can get any of the Indonesian 6 to talk about it, it went a bit like this..... Do you sell Bali Hai? Is it cold? Proper cold? Is it happy hour? Can it be for 6 thirsty travellers? Table for 6 then please. You could ask Gmac..... What does beer taste like through a pool noodle? Or Bernie.... How much chicken Do you like in your vegetarian mie gorang? Or Justin (pilko) Bayley - how he likes his Jasmine tea, art galleries and being interviewed by groups of school children.

GulliverS

Part Six

T R A N S F O R M AT I O N words TINA MOORE images DAVE MOORE

Poor Gulliver was relegated to storage for a couple of months due to lack of work space in the shed so there was no update in the last edition of ViaWest. I’m happy to say Gulliver has now returned to the shed and work has continued.

Up to this point the rear of Gulliver has not been attached to the chassis, he had just a frame propping him in position. The first job at the rear was to repair the rear pillars and then connect them to the chassis. He used the jig to ensure it lined up.

Both rear lower corners were replaced with more funky green Classic Fab panels. Next the rear wheel arch tubs were both repaired. The repairs were sandblasted and primed.

Both sides of the engine bay were replaced along with both battery trays. The engine lid, rear valance and rear bumper were all mounted and gaps checked.

Dave then fabricated and fitted both inner wheel arch closing panels. Next job is for these repairs to be sandblasted and painted with epoxy primer.
