MY FAVES... 1956 Oval Beetle

1955 of

WESTERN AU S T R A L I A

A huge thanks goes out to Sean Douglas for bringing our ideas to life. The new shield style logo is a collaboration of ideas and we love the finished product.

Jarrahdale Cruise

Another worthy mention goes to Darren with his awesomely restored Green Beetle featured in this edition. With minimal notice he got the article information back to me in speedy time. The Jarrahdale cruise was a photographers dream. Loads of lovely Dubs to photograph. The changing weather and awesome backdrops was a joy. Plus the bonus of walking around George Parolos’ huge collection of interesting vehicles and machinery. I could have done a whole article about this plot of land.

Presidents Spot Dear Members and Readers,

What a rainy last few months - well we needed it though. The events have been interesting - 10 Years of Alfred’s!!! I reckon that I miss 2 a year on average So I would have been to 100 meets there. (so that must be about 90 Alfred’s Burgers over the years). We wish Gerry Prosser all the best and a speedy recovery as he has had a stint in hospital. Its a sad time too for their business as Gerrykay Mechanical has closed its doors. I know that Kay and Gerry have done so much for the VW community and particularly the Formula Vees. They do have parts that they wish to sell and move so get in touch with them. All the best. Our Annual General Meeting is on the12th September. Come along to meet other members and hear about the last financial years activity. All positions on the committee are available too.

We need more new faces on the committee to spread the work load, some current members are stepping down as they have been involved for many years now. If you are worried about commitment and time - I assure you only a few hours a month is all that is required to be a part of the organising committee. We have trialled some Member exclusive events where discounts or free food/drink are available. We may do more of these types of events - Another benefit and offering to club members. Membership renewals and reminders have gone out. Thank you to all that have paid up for another year. If you will not be renewing your membership I thank you for supporting us. This will be the last magazine and event notification email you’ll be receiving :( Jamie Barrett Club President

JA R R A H DA L E W I N T E R C RU I S E The wintery weather didn’t keep the cruisers away on our recent Jarrahdale Winter Cruise. The forecast was miserable with 95% chance of rain... but I guess it is winter! We had arranged to meet in Kelmscott and there we had 12 vehicles arrive ready to go. Amongst them were some new faces and old members too. The rain held off and we departed full of high spirits, only to get a little way down the road, before some bad luck struck the fastback on her maiden cruise with the club. Poor Chrissy had to pull out and call the RAC despite the best efforts of Dave

words & images Janice Ahearn

and Andrew who tried to get her back on the road. After waiting for a while on a side street we continued the cruise down South Western Highway to Kingsbury Drive where we stopped at the Look Out to regroup and meet up with some more VW’s. The view from there was spectacular and the weather was still being kind. We regrouped and carried on along the tourist drive to Serpentine Dam. Jamie and I raced ahead to try for some photographs of the convoy coming over the dam.

JA R R A H DA L E W I N T E R C RU I S E

From there we drove on to Jarrahdale Tavern where there were some more vehicles and an excited young Oskar waiting for us. The tavern had kindly put a room aside for us to congregate and enjoy our lunches.

Continued >>

With a bit of effort Jamie & I had tracked down a local Jarrahdale icon, George Parolo, who has an extensive collection of old machinery. He was happy to give us a guided tour for $5 each. It was worth paying $5 just to meet George! What a character he is. He showed us around his yard full of old cars, tractors, trucks and motorbikes. It was a photographer’s paradise. The light was just right and the rusty vehicles made a perfect subject. We wandered around for some time and then George showed us through old Whitby Cottage, built in 1920, that he had furnished in that period.

JA R R A H DA L E W I N T E R C RU I S E

The day-trippers headed home at this point and the rest of us drove out to the Jarrahdale Oval where the Serpentine Council had kindly allowed us to camp for the night. The weather was beginning to look ominous but we were lucky to have a shelter. With a few strategically placed tarpaulins along with Ida & Paul’s fire pit we were dry and toasty. It was an enjoyable event with 21 vehicles taking part.

Driving towards a shopping centre on a Saturday afternoon is normally a headache for me.... It means hustle and bustle, queues and noise. This time however it was the meeting point for the Chapel Farm Cruise. Upon arrival the sun was out and a few had already arrived for the meet. Justin and his boy Logan in the Beetle were leading the way on this one. The chosen route to Chapel Farm was direct without too many traffic lights to split us up. This gave us an opportunity to group up and stay together for once. Our string of Volksies

wordS & images JAMIE BARRETT

looked great on Roe Highway. We convoyed without a hitch to Middle Swan and met up with other members at the destination. What a great location for us - plenty of space, interesting hand built building, great food and friendly staff. We chatted the afternoon away whilst grazing on the lovely food that was quick to arrive at the tables. A few of us braved the cold evening and headed up the hill for some Kombi camping around the fire with drinks.

I first saw this car at Alfred’s Kitchen a while ago. I could see that it was special from the way it was presented, clean, shiny and cherished. Darren was a mechanic and owned a Garage business back in the UK. Although no official training in Paint or Panel he took on this project with the intention of doing most of the work himself (not the first car he has painted). He is a big believer in not paying someone else to do something you can do yourself. Darren’s first VW was a MK1 Scirocco back in 1987 – He was only 14 years old. He repainted this at home and sold it for a profit. His love of Beetles started back in

2001 when he purchased a 1960 standard the first of six in total. The Oval, a 1956 originally from New Zealand, found itself in Albany, WA. This is where it was rescued. It had been standing for 10 years unloved. Originally blue and re sprayed silver. This restoration was a Body off – meaning the shell was separated from the chassis. Wolfsburg West floor pans were welded in along with new heater channels. All the rust repairs for the shell were done using another donor car - and some Das Resto quality parts - luckily there wasn’t much rust.

All mechanicals received an overhaul, front brakes upgraded to disks. The gearbox is a synchronised version from a 60’s Beetle. Most parts were imported from CIP1 in the States. After countless hours getting the body perfect, the car was then treated to new acrylic paint and polished. The final colour took Darren over a year to choose. He wanted a 50’s type colour. After flicking through paint shop chip books this is the one that was finally chosen.

Once the body and pan were reunited, a TMI mohair headlining was fitted with help from a YouTube video – the fitting took 2 days! Darren had trouble sourcing a ready made carpet kit of the quality and colour that he wanted so he made his own. A rare genuine Rometsch steering wheel sets off the dash. On the exterior “Towel Rail” bumpers were used (the rear off a ’67 European Beetle with different profile rails)

VAL

w

Other than a slight height adjustment at the rear - the car is finished! Youngest daughter Jemma didn’t consult Dad but she’s adamant that she will own the car when she’s older!

It was important that the semaphores worked to keep the period feel. The voltage was increased from the stock 6V to 12V.

The engine is a standard 1600 Dual Port with NOS twin Solex carburetors with original 50’s Oil baths atop. Doghouse fan shroud, Bosch 009 Distributor fitted with points and condenser. Stainless steel J-pipes lead the burnt gas into a stock exhaust.

w

All of the work was taken on and completed to a high standard by Darren except help from “Stripped Bare” in Naval Base. They carried out the media blasting – “well worth the wait and is amazing”. Plus his friend re-sculpted some Subaru Liberty seats to replicate the original low back ones and covered the door cards for him.

ur VW & Alfred’s association started 10 years ago when I was active on the Kombi Konnection which was a forum run by the late “Brookie” (Warren Matthews). A few of us had chatted around the BBQ about finding a place to have a regular meet. The NoH2O Collective had a regular gathering at the Como Hotel that was fading out. I had passed Alfred’s many times and thought to myself “this is the spot” I thought we needed an easy to remember night - The first Wednesday of every month (its almost become a slogan now). I whacked up a post on the Forum and that was it. NoH20 started to advertise and support it and we all just came together. It wasn’t long after, that Brookie started to have concerns about insurance and liability as the momentum started to grow. At the time I had my toe in the door and had started attending VW Club meetings - It only seemed

eds

natural to table the idea and ask the club to take it on as an official club event. Problem solved. Every month doesn’t just attract the regulars. I can guarantee someone new will come along and introduce themselves. It is a great place to mingle and meet like minded folk, buy merchandise and seek information.

Alfred’s hasn’t changed too much at all other than the introduction of the Railway carriage last year. However, rain or shine, we still prefer to be around the Volkswagens. I still really look forward to the first Wednesday of every month and I want to thank the Lawrence family and the staff, especially Lisa, for welcoming us each month.

WORDS Jamie Barrett images Paul RICHARDSON

To celebrate the occasion we put the word out to the regulars to bake/make cakes. We spoke with Daniel Lawerence the owner of Afred’s who was most accommodating. We had a chunk of the parking spaces reserved for us so we could set up the Club Marquee, which ended up being well needed! The weather forecast of heavy rain was not wrong. The turnout was brilliant. We almost filled the carpark. The cakes, rockyroad and biscuits were just amazing - so much effort! We presented Daniel with an Alfred’s themed VW Club Tin sign as a thanks for supporting and welcoming us each month. Sean Douglas our resident designer was also recognised in my short speech for his design and time. The site is not perfect for a car club to meet at, however something must be right about the location for it to continuously get people along for such a duration - Perhaps its those burgers.

GulliverS

Part NINE

T R A N S F O R M AT I O N words TINA MOORE images DAVE MOORE

Dave needed to get Gulliver off the rotisserie and rolling in order to repair the doors. Its important that the bus is on a flat natural rolling surface to work on and set the door gaps. Before Gulliver could be taken off the rotisserie the underneath needed to be painted. Prior to these coats of paint all the joints where seam sealed.

Once the seals where done 6 litres of tinted Raptor coating were applied. Once the paint was dry and whilst still on the rotisserie the brake master cylinder and hard brake lines were fitted. Dave was still able to roll Gulliver onto his side which meant he could fit them standing up instead of laying underneath. It’s great to see some colour on Gulliver. He really is starting to come to life and hopefully Dave will be able to make some more progress over the next couple of months as long as I don’t keep booking us on weekends away!!
