eeting new people is something I really enjoy, especially when they are interesting and have stories to tell. This month I had the pleasure to meet the Klenner family at their home in Morley. We were brought together to learn more about their relationship with the company Rowleys, and that I did. However, I learned a lot more about the 10 pound ticket to Fremantle and the way in which people gave up their home country in search of new opportunities on the other side of the world. It was such a pleasurable afternoon, I came away from that meeting really rewarded. Thank you so much Ernst and Margerate for sharing your story. Read about Rowley Ute and Ernst’ story in this edition.

President’s Spot Dear Members and Readers, We are fast approaching the Silly Season. For me I like a simple kind of Christmas. I’ll use the time to chill, relax and hang out with friends and family plus get a few hours of VW tinkering time. The blow up Santa Kombi will be on the front verandah along with the endless string of fairy lights (are these now coming in 100m long lengths?!) Unfortunately this is also a time where some people turn into nutters on the road. So drive carefully and be extra vigilant. Day of the Volkswagen is in a couple of days and I’d like to take this opportunity to ensure you know that once you are parked on Wilson Park you won’t be able to move your vehicle until approximately 2pm. This has always been the case as we want the event to be as safe as possible for our patrons, plus it takes 4 hours to get around all the cars to have a good look. The beach is near and in the other direction up and along South Terrance you will find some cool vintage shops, coffee shops and restaurants. On the park there will be members selling items, Blue Bird Vintage come along with a great eclectic bunch of items for sale (a display in itself) then there’s the club tent and merchandise for sale. Please feel free to bring along your unwanted spare parts to sell on the day. Everyone entering has a chance to win a trophy this year. Remember this is a Day for all Volkswagen lovers to bring their vehicles out whatever the condition, it is a show. See the back page of this mag for the categories and how you could win a fantastic Limited Edition Esky. If all of this isn’t an incentive to come on the day, then the showbag you receive upon entering your car are also great and well worth the $10 entry fee themselves. See back page for all this years DOVW categories - there’s one for best display too. I would like to thank the rest of the committee for the work they have put in this year. Your contributions have helped spread the load and made us stronger as a group. Club President Jamie Barrett

Steve & Julieanne Simmons How long have you had a passion for VWs 3 years for us, 25 years for our son. The passion is still growing as we continue to make improvements to her. This car was a project to work on when we had spare time, something we could achieve together.

Best VW we’ve owned Our first and only:

What got you into VWs Our son from a very early age loved VW’s, Kombis of course. We brought our VW from Kelvin Rd in Maddington from a friend of Bill West’s, 3 years ago. Bills friend told us it was a good reliable car and it would take us all the way to Broome and back! The biggest bonus was it was licensed, and although we doubted it would get us to Broome, let alone back, we brought it anyway with the intent to do her up for our son to inherit one day.......when we have had some fun first of course!

“My Juliette” 1974 Type II Bay.

Best VW experience 4 days and nights at Fairbridge in April 2017, getting to know the VW Club crew a little better. Great weather and a whole new experience for us as it was our first Fairbridge, our longest camp out to date in the Kombi and a good test for our Solar panels and fridge. Favourite VW club cruise to date The “Hottest” experience was the overnight cruise to the Mandurah Estuary Holiday Park in February this year, it was 37 degrees and no air conditioning! We had great company and plenty of laughs. It was a very relaxed meet and thankfully they had a pool at the holiday park to cool off in.

Neither of us had ever driven a bus before, so we did not know what to expect. There was a lot of play in the steering, we were told that was the norm for a bus, it took us about 6 months and $$$ to get the steering to a better kind of normal after visiting a repairer in Freo. But all in all, she was a pretty good buy.

BEFORE THE RESTO To quote the President: “ You’ll never be finished, there will always be something to do on her” We expect you may be right Jamie!

ay of the Volkswagen will be at the same venue as last year with a couple of subtle changes. The theme is based around the Unique Australian Country Buggy. We’ll be celebrating 60 years of it. With some great examples on display on the day. This vehicle was initially designed for the military so we are loosely basing the theme around the Army too, so get creative with the displays around your vehicle and your attire.

W

e have decided to strip back the way trophies are distributed and go for a broader approach. Everyone who attends will be up for nomination and a prize. Vehicles will not be judged in the same format as previous years. This will benefit us all and make for a smoother entry and vehicle parking.

T

o help us please don’t arrive before 8am as the roads are small and we don’t want to block up the popular beach area. Remember that this is a static car show. Once you enter and park you are not permitted to move your vehicle until the show is declared over at around 2pm.

50/50 TAIL LIGHTS

Back in the 50’s cars were becoming more popular, almost every family had one, the roads were starting to get congested, turning corners was becoming a serious hazard, people couldn’t see when a car was turning, larger vehicles had larger problems.

Early indicators were no more than a stick with a light that came out of the B pillar of a vehicle, Semaphores, named after the naval way of using flags to communicate to other ships, The driver could see it, sometimes the car immediately in front could also see it, but the car behind had difficulty, especially when turning left. Something had to be done, after a lot of world wide consultation it was agreed by major motoring country’s that an amber flashing light on the outer most corner of every vehicle was a great idea, these lights would remain off until the driver decided to turn, by operating a small lever on the steering column the lights would flash “ indicating” which direction the vehicle was to take, Once round the corner the driver replaced the lever in its park

position effectively switching off the flashing lights. A great idea and with proper instruction cars would become safer. So how does all this fit in with the very rare 50/50 lights? Back in 1959 Australia and Italy made a law that all new vehicles being sold from 1960 onwards would have indicators fitted as standard equipment. VW Australia quite wisely enlarged the existing snow flake tail light, replacing the glass lens for a cheaply made plastic lens that had a top half comprising of and indicator lens, and the bottom half incorporating the tail and stop lights with a reflector, VW Italy loved the idea and didn’t have to spend a cent on development, design, or tooling they just bought complete light units from Australia. These were the first tail lights where the globe or bulb could be replaced by simply removing the lens and not dismantling the whole light.

The rest of the world suddenly thought indicators were a great idea, The Americans couldn’t handle amber flashing lights as most or their emergency vehicles had those, and red, and blue, so cars and light commercials were built with red rear lights for turning, lighting and stopping, and white lights up front doing the same so as not to confuse things... except they started fitting their cars with amber marker and running lights.

Early indicators were no more than a stick

VW Germany had been working on this for a short while and came up with their own version of the tail light comprising of top 1/3rd indicator, the lower 2/3rds being for the stop and tail light, the larger red area allowed for a larger reflector allowing the car to be better seen when parked on poorly lit roads.

The rest of the world caught up with Aus and Italy in 1961, and VW Germany instructed all their plants and operations to fit the new oval lights, These lights would later be known as 1200 lights as this light was fitted to all base model vehicles (1200cc cars) right through to 1973.

Australia and Italy were forced to drop the 50/50 and consign it to history. I guess the Italians weren’t that bothered as it hadn’t really cost them anything. 50/50 lights are quite often hoarded, and sold at huge prices on Ebay etc, VW collectors world wide will pay a hansom fee for such a rarity. A one year only production item! Standard on cars only sold in 1960 in either Australia or Italy. So the next time you see a set of these, remember they were a year ahead of their time! words & images JOHN HORNBY

he weather forecast wasn’t looking great but we still headed down to Binningup Friday afternoon. We turned up at the beach side Caravan park to find 3 kombis and a Beetle already there. Jo, Cory and Fiona had rigged up their awning and the ground keeper gave us a fire pit and a crate of wood, so we were set for that evening.

We decided to go down the local surf club for a feed and drinks. The food was good, the drinks were cheap and there was even a live band and a raffle. Back at camp we managed to get the fire going thanks to Gmac’s citronella oil and although it was a bit wet and windy we all enjoyed a nice evening. Saturday late morning as we were getting ready for a short cruise, we

saw a Kombi on a trailer drive past the campsite and 5 minutes later a chap called Troy walked up and asked us if we were the Volkswagen Club. Of course we were and so we made the first stop Troy’s house where we all piled in to have a look at the newly painted Kombi which is up for sale!!

Paul uarding Troys Kombi

We soon made our way up through Harvey to the Old Coast Brewery, where a few more club member joined us for lunch and some came back with us to camp.

CONTINUED...

Saturday nights weather was much the same as the night before, but Cory had been kind enough to drop some more wood (more wood more wood more wood) for us to burn and Steve & Julieanne kindly let us all huddle under their awning. We entertained ourselves by carving a kombi pumpkin called Patina Wilson, who unfortunately lost a safari window to Gibraltar the dog but luckily we had a spare.

The sun came out for us on Sunday morning and it was a beautiful day for a walk on the beach before we all packed up and cruised home.

Although the turnout wasn’t as great as the Margaret River trip last year we all really enjoyed ourselves and would definitely come back to Binningup again.

words JAMIE BARRETT images JIM Gary Bull was fossicking at a well-known Volkswagen bone yard in Midland and soon realised the old fella wasn’t going to sell anything. It was at this point a friend turned up who said “I’ve got an old Splitscreen Ute you can look at”. That afternoon a deal was done and the blue Single Cab Ute was purchased. The SC was in poor condition. It had a weirdly cut big side door and half the rear loading bed was missing. This was thought to have been modified by a farmer to cart bulls around. The 1961 Ute was mostly complete, engine was seized, the doors were rusted shut and barely holding onto their hinges. It had been used as target practice (a common theme). Gary towed it home with his trusty 1972 Kombi. He soon

learned that the welding couldn’t be done by his preferred method of using a rotisserie, as the body wasn’t attached too well to the chassis. The Ute was lifted level and lived on a “poor mans hoist” for 2 years whilst the vehicle was under restoration. The floors and unusual side gate was the first mission. Then the passenger door opening had to be realigned using a Portapower. Gary noticed some different coloured paint under the flaking blue paint. At this stage he was still unsure whether to go concourse or ratlook. During the restoration of the side gate the colours under the blue got him thinking again. He slowly and carefully took off the blue paint using oven cleaner and wet n dry sand paper. What he discovered helped

him make his mind up that this vehicle was going down the Ratlook path. He uncovered the letters R O W L E Y S. A Google search brought up the historic records of an electrical goods company of that name.

the screen before his wide eyes! He knew he had a piece of history and a great story was unfolding. The mechanicals came next. New running gear including a front beam and rear straight axle kit from Munster were installed. An engine and gearbox was sourced and tweaked by Gary at Gerry Kays workshop in Morley under Gerrys supervision. After fitting safari windows (front and rear), the interior re-upholstered, roof lining fitted, electrics fixed and some finishing touches, it was off to the Pitts for inspection.

The rest of the blue paint on the Ute was carefully removed over the next 3 months whilst waiting for metal panels to arrive. What he revealed were very colourful and interesting bits of sign writing. “Best Deals, Best Service”, a telephone number on the passenger door and other markings such as “TVs”. The project had really come alive now.

The drive to the inspection appointment on a 42 degree simmering hot day wasn’t a good one. Upon arrival at Welshpool Inspection Centre the battery died. Luckily Jim was on hand in the support vehicle and able to loan it’s battery. This wasn’t the only problem. Some fuses had blown unbeknownst to Gary as he entered the lane with sweat dripping. The inspector wasn’t happy with many things – Perhaps Blending the old with the new was a difficult the ratty appearance put him off or the fact and huge learning curve. Dodging the that it was a tad too low. Seven Inspectors bullet holes and keeping as much history were drawn like magnets! The revived SC as possible proved timely. sadly didn’t pass – this time. In the background, the history was something Gary was keen to learn more about. Google was very limited so his attention turned to the State library where more and more was discovered about Rowleys. A black and white picture of a fleet of Rowleys Single Cab Utes was on

Back home with his tail between his legs Gary engaged the help of an engineer and raised the Kombi. He made the necessary adjustments to the suspension and put the correct tyres on, fixed the electrics and booked another appointment - 3 months later it passed!

words JAMIE BARRETT images JIM MOORE

After coming to a dead end with his research online Gary was approached at a Servo by a lady called Karen “My Grandfather used to work for Rowleys, he was the chief service technician, he’d love to see this!” A date was arranged to take the SC to meet Ernst Klenner for a reunion. I joined in on the trip to Morley for a lovely visit. Ernst and his wife Margerate welcomed us into their home where we learned so much about their lives, their trip to Australia from Germany and Rowleys. The history surrounding Rowleys and this vehicle are great. We learned that it was Rowleys that modified the rear to make transporting fridges and white goods easy (and not the farmer as we thought). VW actually made a version of this configuration called the SO25.

From the marks on the roof caused by rope burns, to the sign writing. This is what makes this vehicle very special and unique. Now a preserved part of our local WA history. What a superb example of a sensitively restored vehicle done with lots of support from members of our club.

wtte

Back in 1955 Ernst and Margerete Klenner where sitting reading the newspaper at their home in Germany. An advert from an Australian Electrical company caught their eye. The advertisement was for a position based in Perth, Western Australia as a technician. Ernst applied for the job in his best German handwriting... a reply asking for his credentials, references and the request to reply in English was answered.

Six months later, on the 24th of February 1956 the family arrived at Fremantle Port. Margarete remembers the heat “it was 42 degrees they drove around looking at accommodation with their young child. Not happy at what was on offer they settled in South Perth with family friends for 6 months until they found a place of their own. Almost immediately Ernst was given the job as head technician.

This is a copy of that original advertisement that appeared in the German Newspaper Back to the Rowleys Ute..... Ernst informed us that there was a whole fleet of Volkswagen Single Cabs with the same paintwork! Where are they now?

Three Summers

MOVIE NIGHT

Perth Premier

There was much excitement amongst the VW mob, in 2016 when Ben Elton dropped into Volksville at Fairbridge, with his camera crew to do some filming for his new movie Three Summers. We all wondered what it was going to be about and if any footage of the VW’s would be in it. All of our questions were answered when we were recently invited to participate in the WA Premier at the historic Cygnet Theatre in Como. The

organisers wanted six Kombis to park outside the Theatre to create a festive atmosphere and photo opportunities. They looked fantastic and were much admired by the crowd. The movie was everything we hoped for and more! With a wonderful cast it was very entertaining with plenty of belly laughs and a few familiar faces in there too! Deb Rogers & Gareth Thomas both popped up in the movie. There’s a quick flash of our VW’s at Fairbridge, but if you blink you’ll miss it. No spoilers! It’s a great film.

Three Summers words AND images JAN AHEARN

That wasn’t the end of the fun for some of us. A few nights later we attended the Red Carpet Charity Gala Premier at The Mandurah Performing Arts Centre. Jo & Andrew Mill provided the kombis for the Red Carpet Walk. After a 4 course dinner, some photos with the Celebrities and entertainment from the Bindjareb Middar Dance Group we watched the movie again. It was just as good second time round. Do yourselves a favour, grab the kids and Grandma and go along to see it.
