Chatham Girl Scouts Learn Life Lessons Through Thoughtful Projects

he Chatham Girl Scouts dazzled with their 2022 Spring service unit project, sowing seeds of change. Under their care, over 200 native tree seedlings sprouted, representing a green initiative to nurture Mother Earth. Continuing their impactful journey, in 2023, the scouts, exploring sustainability and addressing food insecurity, actively cultivated an impressive annual harvest of over 200 pounds of produce in the community garden. This ongoing green initiative has been a dedicated activity for the Chatham Girl Scouts since 2017. Their generosity continues to ripple as the homegrown goodness is donated to a local food pantry. 12-Year-Old Climbs Kilimanjaro

ammit Acharjee, a seventhgrader from Millburn, has turned his love for hiking into an inspiring adventure. Since toddlerhood, he’s found solace and joy in nature, especially during family hikes. Last summer marked a pinnacle as he conquered Kilimanjaro in Africa with his dad, Swagato, choosing the scenic Lemosho route. The sevenday ascent provided breathtaking views and a profound sense of

accomplishment. He also enjoyed meeting members of the Masai tribe and going on a safari. Sammit’s training regimen includes Tae Kwon Do, family hikes, and Boy Scout Troop 17 expeditions. This summer, he’s set his sights on Peru, ready to explore the icy beauty of Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain alongside his dad. Sammit’s journeys embody youthful determination, family bonds, and a passion for scaling new heights.

Local’s Adversity Sparks Career in End-of-Life and Grief Support

In the wake of personal adversities, including a brain aneurysm and her husband’s early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Holly Strelzik of Summit has transformed her experiences into a compassionate journey of guiding others through end-of-life and grief support by founding the Center for the Heart (C4TH). Transitioning from a successful corporate career, Holly’s certifications as an End-ofLife Doula, Reiki Master, and Advanced Grief Recovery Method Specialist™ have equipped her to support individuals and families facing loss. Her mission, reflected in her nonprofit C4TH, is driven by a commitment to providing accessible endof-life and grief services. “Many are dying or experiencing longterm diagnoses alone. Often, people don’t understand that end-of-life experiences can be as beautiful and meaningful as birth,” says Holly. Her work at C4TH is regarded as sacred, shaped by the compassionate care she believes everyone deserves during the universal grief experiences due to loss and death. Annually, approximately 56 million people worldwide, including 2.5 million in the US, die, leaving an average of five grieving survivors per deceased individual. Pantry is Extending a Heartfelt Helping Hand to the Community

Twelve Baskets Food Pantry, a cooperative project between First Presbyterian Church of Stirling, Meyersville Presbyterian Church, All Saints’ Episcopal Church of Millington, Long Hill Township Community Services, and CERT, is a vital support network making a difference in many people’s lives. Bolstering 60 households per distribution week, including 27 seniors, 60 adults (non-senior), 42 children, and 60 veterans, Twelve Baskets is where compassion meets action. Located at All Saints’ Church Parish House, 5 Church Road in Millington, from mid-October through June, and First Presbyterian Church of Stirling, 158 Central Avenue in Stirling, the rest of the year, the pantry is open on the 1st and 3rd Thursday evening of each month. It provides non-perishable foods, fresh produce, and items like toilet paper, diapers, feminine hygiene products, clothing, and cleaning supplies. Patrons can also access the pantry for emergencies by contacting All Saints or Long Hill CERT offices. In addition, Twelve Baskets organizes Thanksgiving and Christmas drives, a holiday pie fundraiser, a summer lunch program, a community supper, and Help Bag Hunger Day at ShopRite of Stirling. According to volunteer Lynn Norcia, “No donation is too small to make a difference in the lives of those who are food insecure. We greatly appreciate all the community support we receive.” While food insecurity is prevalent yearround, factors like COVID, poverty, unemployment, federal cuts in SNAP benefits (food stamps), and inflation have driven a surge in food pantry demands. According to All Saints’ Rev. Vicki McGrath, in 2023, the number of families registered quadrupled from 16 to 63, which was an increase of 393 percent and is expected to increase even more this year. In addition, the food volume distributed went up from 37,000 pounds in 2022 to 51,515 pounds in 2023. Citing

Depending on donations from community members, local businesses, foodorientated companies, and farms, the pantry publishes its top five greatest needs on its website and social media every two weeks. To meet nutritional needs, donors are encouraged to provide healthy, nonperishable items, avoiding foods high in salt, sugar, and highly processed grains.

2023 statistics, she said there were 36 distribution offerings and over 20 pick-ups from the Community Food Bank of NJ Distribution Center. Food was distributed by 39 volunteers from Long Hill CERT, members of the three sponsoring churches, local Boy and Girl Scouts, and community volunteers, who have logged more than 1,010 service hours supporting the pantry’s efforts.

t’s as though I’m stepping from razor blade to razor blade.” “It feels like my feet are under attack by fire ants.” “Like I’m walking on wet paint and rolled up socks.” And you’re in this kind of pain all the time. ‘It’s relentless, keeping you up at night and preventing you from doing even the most mundane tasks. Things that I used to take for granted, like wearing shoes and going grocery shopping. Two of my three children were getting married last year and wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to attend their weddings,” shares Barbara W. Barbara was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2015, a degenerative condition affecting almost 5% of people over the age of 55. “My doctor sat me down and said ‘Barbara I’m so sorry to tell you this but you have neuropathy. I’m going to prescribe you Gabapentin to manage the discomfort but overall, neuropathy is untreatable.’ My first thought was ‘we can cure cancer but you can’t stop my feet from hurting?’ It felt like a cruel joke. Visitors to Liberty Science Center will be inspired by the science and technology behind some of the most beloved animated films and their characters, with The Science Behind Pixar. This massive, immersive exhibition showcases the computer science, math, and science concepts used by the artists and computer scientists who help bring Pixar’s award-winning films to the big screen. Created by the Museum of Science, Boston and Pixar Animation Studios, and featuring more than 50 interactive elements, The Science Behind Pixar embodies the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) thinking skills needed to create compelling films. The exhibition is organized into eight sections, each focusing on a step of Pixar’s technical process – Modeling, Rigging, Surfaces, Sets & Cameras, Animation, Simulation, Lighting, and Rendering – providing visitors with a unique view of the production pipeline and concepts used at Pixar every day. Visitors of all ages will engage in and learn about the filmmaking process through hands-on activities inspired by some of Pixar’s most treasured films, from the first-ever computer animated feature film Toy Story, which opened over two decades ago, to more recent hits like the Incredibles 2.

“The Science Behind Pixar is an interactive exhibit that offers people a hands-on opportunity to understand how we make our films,” said Jim Morris, president of Pixar Animation Studios. “At Pixar, we use science, technology, engineering, art and math – along with a significant dash of creativity and fun – and this exhibit is truly a great demonstration of how all those ingredients come together in our filmmaking process.” “Pixar has brought smiles to the faces of audiences of all ages for decades, so we’re excited to see those same expressions of awe and wonder fill the halls of Liberty Science Center, while at the same time teaching about the power and science of animation,” said Paul Hoffman, the Center’s President & CEO. To better understand the science and math that goes into creating the worlds and characters of Pixar’s films, visitors will hear first-hand from members of the studios’ production teams. They will also be invited to experience different roles within the production pipeline, through screenbased activities and physical interactive elements. In Sets & Cameras, for example, visitors will discover how camera placement and angles created a bug’s-eye view for A Bug’s Life. Visitors will try their hand at creating a digital sculpture from an artist’s sketch in Modeling, and use lights to solve challenges similar to ones Pixar faced in creating underwater scenes with virtual light in Finding Nemo in Lighting. Rigging showcases how the models are given a virtual skeleton that enables the animators to pose them, and in Surfaces, visitors can immerse themselves in the techniques that give surfaces color and texture. Summer camp offers kids plenty of benefits, and many kids are thrilled with the idea of going away to summer camp. Still, for some kids, particularly those who are shy, introverted, or homebodies, the thought of going away for a night, let alone a week or more, can cause considerable anxiety. When kids are adamantly opposed, forcing summer camp on them may not be in their best interest. But for kids who are eager—or at least willing to give it a shot without much fuss—summer camp offers opportunities kids may not have elsewhere. Summer camp provides kids the following benefits: • fosters independence • a place to develop new and lasting friendships • development of new skills • discovery of new interests and hobbies • the opportunity for creative expression • a break from being plugged-in daily exercise • improves their self-esteem • teaches kids to work with others • makes them feel part of a community • prevents or reduces summer learning loss

What are the staff’s qualifications? Many summer camps use teens to staff the camps. Teens make excellent mentors and can bring liveliness to summer camp programs. However, the programs themselves should be developed by professionals and have professional oversight to ensure kids are getting the most from their camp experience.

How does the camp ensure your child’s safety? Find out what kind of safety training the camp provides its staffers. Also, is there staff on hand at all times that knows CPR? What are the camp’s procedures in the event your child becomes ill, has an accident, or an emergency?

What are the rules? Each camp has its own set of rules. So, find out whether your child is allowed to call you. If it’s a summer-long residential camp, can parents come and visit? Can kids bring along a cell phone or electronics? Also, how much money can they bring, and how is it managed? Keep in mind, although there are many great camps, no camp is likely to offer everything precisely the way you want it. Just choose the one that best fits your child and satisfies your most important criteria. This Madison resident finished high school in Bergenfield, NJ where she grew up, and worked briefly before enrolling in the Germain School of Photography in New York City. Armed with a diploma she spent several years working as an assistant to a commercial still-life photographer. Eventually, practicality won out and Margo left the studio for a job at Grey Advertising in the Media and Marketing departments in order to get the benefits that go along with a steady paycheck in the corporate world. With the birth of her child in 1997 she left the corporate world to stay home with her son while studying Yoga and Massage Therapy, and even qualifying as a teacher in those fields. By 2015 she reengaged with her love of photography taking classes at the New York Center of the Arts. Closer to home, Margo began to study with Danielle Austin at the Art Center of New Jersey in Summit, and participated in her first exhibit in 2019. She has been working relentlessly ever since.

Taking walks in the woods at the Loantaka Reservation for over 20 years. Margo says she’d walked with her son when he was small, and then her dog, then finally alone. In her photograph, Loantaka, she has found what she refers to as a narrative moment. One day she found herself right at the edge of the parking lot where she’d been countless times in the past. But in this moment the light was different, and there it was. A startling display of color contrasts and graphic elements falling into place, and noticed by her just because of the play of light in that instant. It’s like much of her work, which is about noticing things that might go unnoticed, except for a confluence of circumstances that made the moment different. There came a time during the pandemic when Margo spent a lot of time walking on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She says she then noticed how many of the older luxury apartment buildings had very elaborate doorways, often with decorative wrought iron work. Captivated by the intricacies she began to photograph them. And again, in the way that Margo finds the unnoticed noticeable, she saw the doormen. Each poised in different fashion depending on the moment. Here, in Doorman, we see one, and can’t help wondering what’s on his mind, and what his experience of the pandemic must be. Last year, Margo became interested in the idea of an artist residency, and too impatient with the process of applying to various grantors, she created her own personal project, and self-funded a month of photographic exploration in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. Working in this resort area out of season, it opened her eyes to different aspects of the Jersey Shore. Eventually, captivated by the relentless action of the ocean, she approached the waters edge with her camera set to very slow shutter speeds, and created a series of surf-based abstractions like this one, Solitude. We find ourselves lost in the abstraction, and likewise, recognizing the subject matter and it’s eternity. And like most of Margo’s oeuvre, it’s about an almost mundane moment, noticed, and hence anything but.

While you can’t always limit the amount of stress in your life, you can work on changing how you respond to it. Just like the automatic “fight or flight” response that kicks in when you’re scared – your muscles tense, heart rate increases, and brain becomes more alert – your body also has a built-in, healthy relaxation response. When that’s triggered, the opposite happens: your breathing and heart rate slow down, and your blood pressure decreases.

Luckily, with practice, you can learn to trigger that response. Try these techniques on your own or find a teacher or class to help you get started. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get the hang of it quickly. And if one approach doesn’t work for you, try something new. You can learn to de-stress in lots of other ways. • MEDITATION. One of the most studied approaches for managing stress, this involves developing your ability to stay focused on the present, instead of worrying about the past or future. Find a quiet location with as few distractions as possible. Get comfortable by either sitting, lying or walking. Focus your attention on a specific word or set of words, an object or your breathing. And let distractions, including thoughts, come and go without judgment. • PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION. To feel the effect, first tense your muscles for a few seconds, then relax them. Start by tensing and relaxing your toes, then your calves and on up to your face. Do one muscle group at a time. • DEEP BREATHING. Take in a slow, deep breath, let your stomach or chest expand and then exhale slowly. Repeat a few times. Many people don’t breathe deeply, but it is relaxing and something you can do anytime, anywhere.

• GUIDED IMAGERY. This involves a series of steps that include relaxing and visualizing the details of a calm, peaceful setting, such as a garden. Getting your mind and body to a place of calm doesn’t always mean being still, however. Other healthy ways to manage stress include taking a yoga or tai chi class, talking to a professional counselor, joining a stress management program or an art class, or meeting up with friends for a brisk walk. Being in nature can be very soothing for some people. Combining de-stressors like these with other healthy habits can go a long way toward strengthening your heart. Eat more veggies, fruits and whole grains, and less sodium, sugar and saturated fats, for example. Move your body more – like through dancing and walking meetings. Find exercises you actually love and do them regularly. Get enough good, quality sleep. And develop a strong social support system. Then rethink some of the familiar ways you may be coping with stress, such as drinking alcohol frequently, using drugs and other substances, smoking or overeating. They can actually worsen your stress – and your health.

This month I had the honor to speak with a living legend. Vince Papale, who was a walk on for the Philadelphia Eagles and who Mark Wahlberg played in the movie Invincible, just received the Living Legend Award by The Philadelphia Sports Writers. Invincible was one of my favorite inspirational movies along with Rudy. I remember taking my boys to the movie and right after the movie around 11pm we went home and picked up a football and drove to the high school field to throw it around. We all thought we were running the 50-yard dash as fast as Vince while we leaped and caught the football with one hand. Ok…maybe just my boys did that. We were so pumped up and inspired by the story. Barry Farber: If there is one thing, I’ve learned from all your achievements including your walk-on performance with the Philadelphia Eagles is that you have tremendous tenacity driven by passion and vision. Can you tell me how your tenacity started in the very beginning? Vince Papale: It had to be something that I was surrounded with early in my life and that certainly came from my parents. My mother was a great athlete and my father was a great athlete. However, they were both one of nine and growing up during the Great Depression and prior to World War Two. After the war was over and I was born, their work ethics were incredible. My mom worked as a volunteer and my father worked on the river at Westinghouse. Their hard work was an asset that I was exposed to early on. They would never let me not finish something that I started. That was part of the house rule. BF: How has that work ethic and tenacity impacted your life’s work?

VP: If I extend that to my life now… I’m 77 and still nowhere near retired. When I was with the Eagles, I had to be tenacious because they were coming at me from all angles because they didn’t like my style of play. It was a little different than the style of play back then. Most wide receivers were soft and didn’t have that tenacious attitude where you would hit anything that moved kind of attitude.. Being tenacious is something that’s been ingrained in my life. I’ve been surrounded by tenacious people including my wife, Janet. Nobody works harder than her. In the movie they have her as a Giants fan but Janet was a world class gymnast on the USA world gymnastics team. There were six sisters in her family that were all gymnasts and she was the one who was told that she would be the one taking them to practice because she had the least talent of them all. And she’s the only one in that family that ended up wearing USA on her jersey. So, it’s something that’s ingrained in our house as well. BF: One of my favorite quotes is: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. VP: I like that one! Dick Vermeil has a similar quote…” An opportunity is worth to a person exactly what their preparation enables them to make it”. I didn’t see that quote prior to me going out for the Eagles but I think I was the example of that quote when I found out I had that shot. I was ready to go 30 years old or not. I just needed the opportunity. BF: Any other advice that the readers would appreciate about what you practice every day? VP: More than anything, I refuse to give up. People told me it couldn’t be done.

I’m looking at a picture now of coach, Dick Vermeil when we were at the premiere of the movie Invincible and the absolute joy in our faces. BF: Many people think they are tenacious and just keep getting setbacks and rejected. Any advice for them? VP: Sometimes they might need someone around them that could give them encouragement to get through that. It could be a mentor. It could be the partner, the wife, the friend, the sister, brother or whoever it might be. What I tell people is that it’s not always perfect. I feel vulnerable sometimes but I surround myself with a group of very positive people and refuse to have the negativity seep in. When I was trying out for the Eagles, everyone said you’re too old and it’s never been done before. You’re too old, you never played college football… what are you crazy! It’s all about achieving that impossible dream and you can’t do it alone. Everybody says it takes teamwork to make the dream work. BF: What’s your definition of success today? VP: Doing something that somebody said was impossible to do.
