Hope Hub Launches in Morris County to Help People At-Risk

ommunity members of Summit, New Providence, and Millburn, and their Uber drivers, can now ride safely knowing they have immediate access to 911 in an emergency. The Mountain Valley Emergency Communications Center (MVECC), a regional public safety answering point serving Summit, New Providence, and Millburn, has rolled-out Uber’s In-App Emergency feature with the RapidSOS Portal Jurisdiction View feature. The app allows drivers or riders who are feeling unsafe during an Uber trip in any of these three communities to notify 9-1-1 of a problem directly through the Uber app. Riders and drivers can access the safety toolkit by tapping the shield icon on their Uber app’s map screen. After tapping the 911 Assistance feature, they will see their GPS location, car make and model, and license plate. When tapping on the “Call 9-1-1” button, the user is connected to an emergency dispatcher, where the trip details become immediately available, digitally, for use in responding to an emergency. Uber’s customer support team then follows up with a check-in. For more information on the Uber In-App Emergency feature, visit uber.com 6

Helping Our Neighbors In Need Morris County Interfaith Food Pantry Network Sees a Rise in Food Insecurity Due to the Pandemic

H

unger is an urgent issue in Morris County. According to Feeding America®, the largest hungerrelief organization, in 2020, about 26,330 people in Morris County were considered food insecure before the pandemic. The Morris County Interfaith Food Pantry Network (IFPN) says it has seen a rise in food distribution and families served since the pandemic began and they could use all the help they can get for 2021. “As of late 2020, IFPN was accommodating 6,100 household visits, a 140% increase over 2019’s figures, says Executive Director of IFPN, Carolyn Lake. “By the end of the 2020, we had accommodated a 26% increase

in the number of families and amount of food. At the height of the pandemic the number of new families was up 200%.” Chances are good that someone you know is food insecure. It could be your neighbor, your child’s friend, or even a family member. This means there is a consistent lack of access to enough food for every person in their household to live an active, healthy life. Food insecurity can happen for many reasons, many caused by the pandemic. No one should be afraid to ask for help. However, being food insecure is a private matter, and sometimes people facing it don’t reach out for help. In addition, they may not know how to get help.

Ten Tips for Celebrating EARTH DAY By Jackie Schatell

T

his year marks the 51st annual Earth Day celebration. It is now celebrated in over 193 countries. The themes change yearly, and this year’s theme is Restore Our Earth.

Earth Day helps us remember that our connection to nature is essential for our health and well-being. Prior to the pandemic, Earth Day was celebrated with large festivals, parades, races, and more. This year, there are many virtual and masked small group ways to celebrate helping the planet. Below are 10 ways you can do your part on Earth Day:

1

Reduce, reuse, and recycle.

This is a great opportunity to spring clean. Instead of throwing things into landfills, repurpose them by donating to Facebook groups like the Buy Nothing Project, and Free Stuff marketplace groups, or to the needy.

2

Volunteer.

There are hundreds of ways to volunteer that can be found online like participating in small, masked group cleanups.

3

Educate.

You can educate yourself and others on ways to heal the earth by reading, watching videos and talks.

4

Conserve water.

Earth day is the perfect time to intentionally start conserving water while brushing teeth, showering, and watering the lawn.

10

Vicinity Magazine

5

Choose sustainable.

If you aren’t already doing so, start using recyclable bags for food shopping and reusing plastic water bottles.

6

Use energy efficient light bulbs.

By using energy efficient bulbs and shutting off the lights when you leave the room, you are helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

7

Plant a tree.

Trees provide us with food and oxygen and help us combat climate change. Plant a tree in your yard or donate to a place that is planting trees. You will be doing your part to help the planet.

8

Use non-toxic chemicals.

By using non-toxic chemicals, you will be helping to send less chemicals into the waterways.

April 2021

9

Bike more and drive less.

Make Earth Day the day to start putting this practice into motion. You can get your family in on the action by planning family rides. You will be getting some exercise, while decreasing emissions.

10

Save pollinators.

The bee and monarch butterfly populations are dwindling. We need these species for the pollination of our fruits and vegetables, not to mention the honey from bees. To do your part, plant friendly habitats for them in your garden like willows, fruit trees, and clover for bees, and pesticidefree milkweed for monarchs to eat and lay eggs on.

We only have one planet, and it is dying. Be the change you want to see in the world, and let your children see how you are making a difference. You will be creating tomorrow’s responsible citizens and leaving them with a healthier place to live. Happy Earth Day!

ith spring upon us, thoughts are turning to sprucing up homes. One of the easiest ways to do this is also one that adds value, according to the experts at Wilber’s Home Improvements in Maplewood. Repainting can transform rooms, or the entire exterior of a house. It’s all about picking the right colors, the right combination of colors—and choosing professionals to get it right. Wilber’s Home Improvements’ website includes glowing reviews from clients praising the courteous service, reasonable pricing, and expert knowledge of the company’s owner and employees. “I am very impressed with all the hard work and dedication of your employees,” wrote one. “The work they did far exceeded my expectations and my beautiful-looking home is testament to their talents.”

Local Mom Helps Hundreds— and Counting, Schedule Covid Vaccines

By Jackie Schatell

W

hile Covid vaccines are now available for older adults and immunocompromised individuals, it is often difficult for them to garner appointments. Noting this, as of mid March, Lindsay Feeley, of Summit, a mom of two children under 3, who works full time as an event planner, has already made over 350 appointments for people, and counting. Lindsay says she started making appointments for people after she was able to schedule her own appointment at 4am. She told a friend, who asked for her help, and later mentioned she had other family members having difficulty making their appointments. Lindsay volunteered to help, and says it began spiralling from there. Soon, Lindsay was helping friends, and friends of friends, get appointments, daily, in many states, not just in NJ.

Below, Lindsay shares a few tips: 1. Type fast. 2. Look on sites at odd hours like 4am. 3. Find a buddy who is also looking, so “you can text each other when you see open spots.” 4. Join the Facebook group @ NewJerseyCovidVaccineInfo. 5. Sign up at Wgirls.org, where a volunteer will be assigned to help. 6. Sign up at hidrb.com to be notified of extra doses.

She does it all for free, and when people ask for her address to send her something in gratitude, she says, “If you want to do something for me—just wear a mask.” Lindsay says she loves being able to help others, and says, after being cooped up at home for so long, if “I can help others in this way, I am all for it.”

7. Follow Twitter bot @C19VaxxUpdates.

While many people she helps call her an “angel,” Lindsay says she just enjoys helping others, especially those who have trouble maneuvering on a computer.

10. Create a Walgreens account, so you’re ready to book when new appointments are added.

Lindsay Feeley

8. Look on Vaxxmaxx.com. 9. Check out Findashot.org.

11. Use auto-fill so as to be ready as soon as appointments are listed. 12. Check out grocery store sites. 13. For those over 75, which may expand to age 65 soon, call Walmart, and ask for a pharmacist, who will make an appointment over the phone. 14. Call the NJ COVID senior help hotline, 856-249-7007 for booking assistance.

In addition, Lindsay says, “If someone is helping you get an appointment, do not shy away from telling them your true availability, as this helps prevent the volunteer from having to call later and cancel, and have to start all over again.” She also says, “Don’t have more than one person looking, as this causes confusion, wastes volunteers’ time, prevents others from getting theirs, and also causes those helping to have to later call and cancel, if the person is double booked. Lindsay plans to keep helping people get appointments, until possibly May, when more eligibility categories are opened up, and everyone can start looking. Then, she plans to sleep.

FRONT LINE SEWING ANGELS Make a Huge Dent During PPE Shortage By Jackie Schatell

W

hat started out with one woman, JoAann Gregoli of Sparta, sewing cloth face masks at the start of the pandemic for her daughter, a physician’s assistant at a Long Island ER, has become a nationwide endeavor with over 65,000 hand-sewn face masks, 20,000 scrub caps and 500 “Read My Lips” face masks created by 550 volunteers— and counting. The much-needed personal protective equipment (PPE) items have been distributed to frontline and essential workers, police forces, hospitals, medical facilities, nursing homes, assistedliving facilities, shelters, community organizations and nonprofit organizations across the country. “At the start of the outbreak, I learned that healthcare workers lacked basic Christine Preston personal protective equipment and weren’t prepared for the oncoming COVID-19 pandemic,” says Joann. “My first instinct was to start immediately organizing and mobilizing others to help make masks and then transport them to the hospitals where they were most needed.”

“It was a uniting undertaking. It gave so many people who were home, immobilized by the pandemic, something tangible to do. —Christine Preston

While Joann, a seasoned event planner, was calling residents in her area to action, her friend and partner on the project, Christine Preston, a public relations professional residing in Madison, was mobilizing residents in the Madison and Chatham areas. They set up a page at gofundme.com/f/support-thefront-line-sewing-angels, which by mid-March 2021, had raised $39,115. Next, they created a robust Facebook page, called Front Line Sewing Angels, followed by their website sewingangels.org. Before long, hundreds of people were volunteering to make patterns, cut, sew, put kits together, distribute items and more, as other people and companies donated fabric and other items needed by the Sewing Angels.

JoAann Gregoli “It was such an unexpected surprise to take on this endeavor,” says Christine, who set up strategic depots throughout the area while coordinating volunteer efforts. “It was a uniting undertaking. It gave so many people who were home, immobilized by the pandemic, something tangible to do. They had a purpose and enjoyed making an immediate impact by helping those in need. It was really gratifying.” “It became a labor of love,” adds Joann. Inspired to help their own deaf children, Christine and JoAnn also developed a mask with a clear window called the Read My Lips mask. According to Christine, “People with hearing loss typically rely on visual clues including lip reading to understand spoken language.” The Front Line Sewing Angels produced this product and sell it on their website to help fund their mask making mission. While the group was already well known for their efforts, a Good Morning America segment really put the group on the map. Efforts are still going strong, with calls now coming in from all over the country. Those wishing to contribute are welcome to contact the Angels via their website, Facebook and gofundme pages, call 917-885-9736 or send an email to ccpreston@gmail.com.

something new...mind-boggling architectural designs; life-like “people” laying in the grass; and even a lakeside table where you can “savour” a glass of sculpted wine. Snap photos posing with statues or walking underneath glorious arches. Each work will make you feel as though the art has come to life...for you to interact with! Art is not the only attraction at Grounds For Sculpture. The beauty of nature is the backdrop to every sculpture, adding something special to not only your photos but your entire experience. Wander along manicured paths lined with exotic trees and flowers. Take a walk through a meadow to not only catch a glimpse of an artist’s creation but to smell the wildflowers. Over 2,000 trees have been planted across the property along with a variety of colorful flowers and other plants. Other unmissable sights include a pond and elegant reflecting pools; natural woodlands; bamboo groves; and themed gardens.

Bruce Beasley, ‘Arpeggio III’, 2005

Founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson, Grounds for Sculpture was designed with the purpose of displaying artwork within a serene landscape. Since opening in 1992, it has been committed to exhibiting the work of contemporary sculptures and making the sculptural arts and nature accessible to all. The Grounds for Sculpture “journey” is one that is all about individual discovery. Visitors selfdirect their experience by exploring the grounds on their own, connecting with all that is around you. Guests are encouraged to respectfully touch and interact with the outdoor works, giving you the opportunity to truly discover the art and find meaning based on your own perception.

Combining the wonder of sculptural art and the serenity of nature, Grounds for Sculpture is unlike anywhere you have been. Filled with unforgettable sights, you could wander the grounds for hours and still have more left to see! This day trip destination is truly an ongoing journey that you will want to come back to time and again to keep exploring.

f you’re interested in reducing your energy bill and your environmental impact, Geoscape Solar is a one-stop shop that’s been creating sustainable solar designs for 13 years. Geoscape Solar was founded in 2008 by Michael Boches (CEO), Jeff Chavkin (President) and Lee Watson (COO). “We saw it as the wave of the future—something that was important and good,” said Boches. Like any great start-up, the business was started in a garage. And, their families would gather as the three of them worked—often sharing family dinners. In fact, family was one of the influences behind starting Geoscape. “We shifted our focus to not just making money for the family, but also doing something that our families could understand and be proud of,” said Boches.

Helping Build a SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Geoscape designs, engineers, procures, and installs systems, and provides continued operation and maintenance of the system afterward. “We have people looking at your system every day to make sure that they are performing,” said Chavkin. The company will also take over operation and maintenance for systems that they didn’t install. In addition to solar panels, Geoscape has also entered the electric vehicle charging space, and can help companies implement other energy-saving technologies. “It’s really about helping people eliminate operating expenses by using clean energy,” said Chavkin. “We have no agenda— our clients’ design configurations are determined by their goals, not ours.” To that end, Geoscape is always open and forthright with its customers about their options for going solar. “Communication with our clients is one of our greatest 22

strengths,” says Lee Watson COO. “We consider our clients to be both solar partners and family.” “Often potential clients balk when contemplating the perceived “cost” of solar. In our experience, a New Jersey client who decides to create his/her own solar energy will be in a much stronger cash flow position with solar than without - regardless of the financing tool used to get there,” said Chavkin. In addition to harnessing tax incentives, utility net metering, and NJ’s new FIXED renewable energy credits, Geoscape brings a range of creative financing models to meet their clients’ goals. The team at Geoscape has the experience and expertise to find a solution to help all types of property owners (including nonprofit, commercial and residential) save and make money with no up-front out-ofpocket cost.

Geoscape is driven by its mission to help build a sustainable future. Evidence of its mission in action can be seen in the impact its services can have on a single business: In 30 years, one of its clients, The Wilshire Grand Hotel, will have eliminated the equivalent of 41 million pounds of carbon in the air, 2,500 cars off of the road, and 2.1 million gallons of gas, as well as the equivalent to planting 20,000 trees. “At the end of the day,” said Boches, “We’re about helping our customers go about their daily businesses or lives in a more environmentally sustainable way.”

Making Dreams Come True for More Than 50 Years By Cynthia Burns

S

pring is the ideal time to add an addition or sunroom to a home says Steve Gargiulo. The second-generation owner of Gargiulo Builders says adding a level or expanding over the garage gains square footage and changes the appearance and architectural style of a home. “Building within the existing envelope of the house is more economical than moving,” he notes. Another popular renovation is adding a sunroom. “We bring the outside in for clients to enjoy. We construct the sunroom so that it looks like part of the architecture of your home.” Gargiulo Builders is a full-service building and remodeling company that oversees the management and construction of all projects. “We have been in business for more than 50 years,” says Gargiulo. “Our longevity is a testament to the level of service and quality you will get when you choose us for your project.” Gargiulo is eager to help clients build their dreams.

Window Fashion Styles Abound

M

etropolitan Window Fashions, a 3rd Generation family business, is delighted to announce the opening of their new store located at 449 W. Mt. Pleasant Avenue in Livingston. With their stores in Green Brook (at Fabricland) and Paramus (formerly Nassaus), Metropolitan is NJ’s largest independent retailer of custom window fashions. Bruce Heyman, whose grandfather started the business in Plainfield in 1934, commented on the new location. “Even though we offer a shop-at-home service, many customers prefer to visit our showrooms to see full-size displays. Our Paramus store serves customers in Bergen and Passaic counties and our Green Brook location serves Somerset, Middlesex and Union. We have always served customers in this area, but we wanted a location closer to our customers in Essex and Morris counties to make it more convenient for them to visit us.” Metropolitan’s stores display beautiful fabrics and custom window fashions of all styles. All locations have the designation of Hunter Douglas Gallery dealer—the highest level possible. According to Heyman, “Hunter Douglas is the industry leader in quality, style, service and innovation. They only sell through independent retailers, you cannot buy their products on-line, 28

or at a Big Box store.” Metropolitan offers a selection of over 70,000 fabrics to choose from for drapery or reupholstery projects. If that is not enough of a selection for you, you can bring in your own fabric and they will still work with you. When asked about the numerous awards bestowed upon his company including NJ Family Business of the Year and National Retailer of the Year, Heyman responded, “awards are nice, but we simply want our customers to be happy. That is why we are here—this is a service business. Our philosophy is simple—be kind, be patient, listen and always do the right thing. We will always do the right thing…for our customers, our associates and our community.” In addition to their three stores, Metropolitan offers a FREE in-home decorating service for custom draperies, blinds, shutters, motorized shades and reupholstery, and FREE in-home consultation.

Using Old-World Craftsmanship in New High-End Homes

By Sue Baldani, photos courtesy of Victor Zucchi & Son

W

hen Victor Zucchi arrived from Italy and established Victor Zucchi & Son, he put his artisan skills to work doing mural paintings and stained-glass projects. Through the years, the company grew to include interior church painting, full blown renovation, restoration and new construction of religious entities as well as commercial construction and renovation.

Within the last couple of years, the company’s portfolio has expanded once again to encompass high-end residential construction and renovation. “We give homeowners the opportunity to bring us in from the start, and I think our 85 years and four generations of experience helps in that regard,” says Chris Zucchi, great grandson of Victor and now site manager and head of marketing and project acquisitions.

Many of the employees, which includes a full office staff and seasoned work crews, have been with the company for more than 25 years, so there’s a lot of experience there as well. When it comes to the higher-end residential market, the company can employ the same contractors who handle their complex religious work and utilize those old-world craftsmanship skills to make a home extraordinary. “We bring them onto these residential projects and just let them go to work,” says Chris. “I don’t have to find a residential tile installer and walk him through how to do a highend tile or wood finish. “We have the people on staff already who can do this and do it on a daily basis. If you’re using someone who has been doing that high level quality work for 20 years, it shows in the work. Experience is everything,” he states. “It is something we take great pride in,” says Chris’s father, Ed Zucchi Jr., the owner. “Quality craftsmanship is the thing that sets us apart from other contractors and something that we are always mindful of.”

Retractable Awnings Provide Many Benefits By Jackie Schatell

R

emember last summer when you gathered with family and friends to spend some socially distanced time together in your backyard? Do you recall wishing you had more shade to protect your guests and yourself from the searing sun? If so, you are in luck because there is still time to add that much-needed shade to your decks and patios with retractable awnings. But, keep in mind that the process takes time. Now is the perfect time to get an appointment with an awning expert on the books. This year, your backyard will once again be the most popular “room” in your home, and Window Works, in Livingston, has many wonderful custom options for you to choose from including solar screen shades, retractable screens, and all types of awnings including retractable awnings. Awnings can make it feel up to 20 degrees cooler underneath, which will help make those backyard barbecues and summer afternoon get-togethers even more enjoyable. They also provide

added sun protection by blocking out about 99% of harmful UV rays and prevent the fading of indoor rugs, drapes, and furniture, in areas where the sun hits windows. Today’s motorized awnings can also be programmed to retract and extend at certain times of day, and when it is windy. Another benefit they offer is helping to lower air conditioning costs in the summer. It is important to find the best location for your awning, Window Works will help you make these decisions and more. Their expert awning specialists will come to your home, wearing masks, to help you select the best awning for your needs based on your preferred seating, coverage area and the function of your outdoor space. They will take measurements, determine where and how to install your awning and show you fabric samples. You can rest assured all details will be taken care of, including expert installation by their seasoned team of installers.

While Expanding the Outdoor Living Space “Window Works is family- owned and operated since 1981 by Vin and LuAnn Nigara and their cousin Bill Campesi. They take great pride in both the many multi-generations of families they have worked with as well as in the longevity of their seasoned team of experts. “At Window Works, we go above and beyond to offer the best possible service, products and solutions to our customers,” says LuAnn. “Our connection to the community is very important to us and we love welcoming new customers as much as we appreciate the loyalty of our returning customers.

STEP AWAY

T

hroughout my life I’ve always believed that most projects come to fruition through an ongoing act of tenacity and persistence backed by enthusiasm and deep seeded belief. Pretty hard not to succeed with that attitude coupled with a tough skin to come back and not give up after continuous setbacks and rejection. But there comes a time when you need to step away from a situation to see clearly and learn what really matters. I’ve seen many people, including myself, keep going after something and start to do more negative damage than positive progress going forward. Here are some thoughts on this subject: 1.

Totally step away from the activity or project you’re working on. Either go on to something else or just take a clean break. Sometimes complete stillness can bring about true breakthroughs. Even though it goes against taking action, (which many times solves the problem) it in of itself is an action. Many years ago I wrote about how still waters run deep. The fact that all the silt is whirling around in the stream makes it hard to see clearly. It’s the same with our mind. Once we sit still and meditate or just breathe without thinking our mind starts to settle and our path becomes clear.

2.

Get to the heart of the matter. I ask myself if I’m on a path with heart? Is it something that has true benefits to the people I’m serving and myself. You have to believe that there is value in what you’re working on or it becomes very difficult to maintain focus.

3.

Unconventional wisdom. There is a great advantage from taking action that all the research and learning can’t compare with. Sometimes doing the opposite of what is expected or what the norm is allows you to move to another level. It helped me get on QVC when they said pens don’t sell well on QVC...then I said I would walk home from Pennsylvania if it didn’t sell out. Over 30 publishers rejected my clients book because they said skateboarders don’t read. My client

had a very unconventional approach to his craft. They never understood the value of a 10 time world champion skateboarder who doesn’t Barry Farber drink, doesn’t do drugs, no tattoos and gives out his signed skateboard to the first kid who shows him their library card at a contest or event. Well, one publisher understood that value. 4.

Seek out qualified mentors to get a new and unique view on the situation. Over the years I’ve reached out to many different mentors who have a unique take on life and work. It always has tremendous benefits to hear their thoughts and recommendations. Sometimes people feel like they don’t want to bother anyone when asking for advice. But it actually makes people feel important and they appreciate the opportunity to advise.

“Confidence without clarity is always a disaster.” — Isha Sadhguru

We live in a complicated world where information overload and bad news bombards us everyday. The ability to take a step back and intelligently evaluate our environment and simplify our actions with the above points can help us move into a better place. Stepping away from it all may provide the clarity needed to come back with more strategic and meaningful action.
