Maplewood Couple Spins

Musical

Passion

into Record Fair Success

Jennifer Klein and Charles Maggio, both hailing from bands of the past (Green Dragon for her and Rorschach for him), have used their shared passion for music to create Elusive Sounds, a nonprofit that runs the Maplewood Record Fair. Started in 2019 and held biannually, this June marks the eighth incarnation of the fair.

It transcends commerce, serving as a hub where music enthusiasts converge to share stories and revel in nostalgia. The fair features around 45 tables filled with records, CDs, cassettes, 8-tracks, amplifiers, stereo equipment, comic books, music memorabilia, posters, vintage band T-shirts, and more. With admission set at $3 (free for those under 18) and $6 for early birds, as well as vegan and vegetarian fare, it’s an affordable day out for the whole family.

Mark your calendars for June 2nd, and November 10th, from 10 am to 4 pm, at The Woodland at 60 Woodland Road in Maplewood, and immerse yourself in the excitement of the fair.

Elusive Sounds buys record collections of all sizes, and also accepts tax deductible donations of all music related items. For more information, visit elusivesounds.org.

Crafting Compassion: How One Library Program is Bringing Joy to Seniors and Shelter Dogs

Lori Mattheiss is an inspiring figure of warmth and creativity at the Madison Public Library, where she works in programming and community engagement. She leads craft classes that ignite the creativity of library patrons and seniors, fostering a sense of accomplishment and joy.

One of her recent endeavors involved collaborating with seniors at Sunrise of Madison to craft blankets for dogs from Jersey Pitt Rescue, a volunteer run, foster-based animal rescue

providing care to stray, abandoned, surrendered, and at-risk shelter dogs helping them find loving, permanent homes. She then orchestrated a heartwarming visit, bringing five of the dogs to meet the seniors. The joy was palpable as the seniors wrapped the dogs in blankets, sharing cuddles and companionship.

Through her simple acts of kindness and boundless creativity, Lori illustrates how a ripple of positivity can transform a community.

Thriving Boy Scout Troop is Building Character and Community

Chatham Boy Scout Troop 8, led by Scoutmaster Branimir Cvetkovic, is a symbol of adventure, leadership, and service. With 82 boys, this troop is one of the largest in the area, offering a dynamic and enriching experience for its members.

At the core of the troop’s activities are various service projects supporting the local Chatham community, monthly campouts, and days-long high adventure trips around the Northeast region, as well as to New Mexico and Florida.

AJ and his father Brian George, Assistant Scoutmaster, Troop 8, pose with the food pantry shed AJ created as his Eagle Scout project.

Recently, Sawyer A. Shaw, Thaddeus Kobylarz III, AJ George, and Charley A. Baird-Hassell attained the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Achieving this rank is no small feat; it requires dedication, hard work, and a strong sense of community service, as exemplified by these new Eagle Scouts’ endeavors: renovating the 9/11 Memorial in downtown Chatham, rebuilding a school trail, constructing a shed for a food pantry, and creating a storage unit for a performing arts club. Fostering Healing Through Storytelling: The Journey of Vulnerable Narratives

Sonia Patricia Moran, a recent transplant from Summit to Morristown, has established a sanctuary for vulnerable individuals to share their truths through an interactive open mic format. Her initiative, the Vulnerable Narratives Project, fosters empowerment, healing, and enlightenment within a supportive community. Moran, a multidisciplinary designer with a focus on architecture, industrial design, and woodworking, considers herself a guardian of positive energy and a catalyst for empowerment and support.

Participants engage in monthly themes, submitting written pieces for review and potential inclusion in the program. Monthly gatherings at Bear Minimum, a sustainability-focused store in Boonton, provide a platform for sharing deeply personal stories on topics such as betrayal, trust, authenticity, and overcoming life struggles

and transitions, among other important topics.

Operating on donations and collaborating with local organizations such as Life Center Stage and the Community in Crisis, the project aims to expand to new venues and establish additional chapters.

Moran’s vision transcends storytelling; she envisions a community fostering solace, strength, solidarity, healing, and connection. For more information, visit @vulnerable.narratives.project on Instagram.

Exploring Mental Health Through Art

BBrittany Coburn’s art is a testament to the power of creativity in addressing mental health challenges. Through interactive sculptures, the Summit native invites viewers to touch and interact with her work, creating a unique and engaging experience that fosters understanding and empathy.

Brittany’s journey with mental health and art began in college, where she witnessed friends struggle with drug abuse and mental health issues. These experiences, coupled with her own battles, inspired her to use art as a platform for conversation and healing.

“I’m an artist, and nobody gets to tell me what I can and can’t talk about with my work,” Brittany explains. “This is a conversation that really has to be had.”

Her sculptures often feature imagery of pills and mouths, symbolizing the complexities of mental health. Bright colors and inviting designs challenge the stigma surrounding medication, encouraging viewers to embrace these tools for healing.

One of Brittany’s most successful series is the “Pill Piles,” which consists of familiarly colored pills attached together with mechanisms like lazy Susans. Viewers are encouraged to spin the pills, changing their shapes and creating dynamic shadows.

“The interactive element gives you a much deeper connection to the work,” Brittany notes. “It helps you think more deeply and creatively about these ideas.”

Brittany’s “Vices” series further explores the impact of vices on mental health. This series features brightly colored mouths, each containing a different vice, such as cigarettes, joints, pills, and other indulgences. Through these sculptures, Brittany challenges viewers to consider their own vices and their effects on mental well-being.

“I think a lot of people see vices as guilty pleasures, but for many, they can be a downfall,” Brittany explains. “It’s all about how the viewer experiences it and what resonates with them.”

Brittany’s art has sparked conversations and raised funds for mental health causes. For her thesis show, she partnered with the nonprofit organization Brain Change

to Mind, donating 100% of the proceeds from the artwork to the cause.

“I don’t love the idea of art for art’s sake,” Brittany says. “I think art has the power to inform society and foster change.”

Currently, Brittany is expanding her work and experimenting with new techniques. She recently sold a significant portion of her “Pill Piles” to the permanent collection at the Savannah College of Art Design to be installed on the Atlanta campus. She is also collaborating with the nonprofit Deirdre’s House in Morristown to develop art workshops that offer clients a creative outlet for healing and expression.

Brittany’s art powerfully reminds us of the importance of addressing mental health and promoting positive conversations. Through her work, she is raising awareness and creating a space for healing and understanding.

Turning Grief into Good: The Story of a Book Making a Difference

MMaplewood resident Kelly McKesten’s book, “The ABCs of Swimming,” is making waves not just as a children’s educational tool but as a powerful force for good. Inspired by her late father, Joe McEvoy, a college swim coach and aquatics director, Kelly began writing the book in 1993 at the age of 10 with her dad. Joe had already authored two books about fitness swimming, and he saw an opportunity for them to collaborate on a children’s book about swimming and water safety. Although Joe passed away before they could finish the book together, Kelly held onto their dream.

“We started keeping a notebook with our ideas,” Kelly recalls. “He knew all the swimming terminology, and I loved drawing pictures in the margins.” Tragically, Joe passed away later that year, leaving their book unfinished. However, the notebook became a cherished keepsake for Kelly, a reminder of their shared passion.

During the pandemic, with newfound time and determination, Kelly completed the manuscript and connected with illustrator Maddie Schwimmer. Launched last May for Water Safety Awareness Month, “The ABCs of Swimming” is more than just a children’s book; it’s a tribute to Joe McEvoy’s legacy and a tool for water safety education. The book covers swimming terminology from A to Z in a rhyming structure, making it engaging and educational for young readers. It also includes water safety tips for kids, helping them stay safe around water.

What sets this book apart is its impact beyond its pages. Kelly has partnered with the USA Swimming Foundation, donating $1 from every book sale to provide swim lessons to those in need. Through her book and fundraising efforts, Kelly has raised over $10,000 for the foundation, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.

Kelly’s journey embodies the transformation of grief into a force for good, a testament to the power of perseverance, love, and community. Influenced by her mother’s response to her father’s passing through fundraising, Kelly’s commitment to giving back and sharing with others has shaped her life. This ethos is exemplified by her annual silent auction event, which has grown from a small gathering at her house into a large-scale event with over 250 attendees at a local restaurant. All proceeds benefit the foundation.

“The ABCs of Swimming” stands not just as a book but as a fulfilled legacy and a tribute to Kelly’s father’s passion for swimming. Through her experience, Kelly has made a meaningful difference, with the money raised from book sales providing swim lessons and water safety education to those in need.

The “ABCs of Swimming” is available on Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, or at your local bookstore.

From Mediocre to Immersive: ENHANCE YOUR HOME VIEWING AND SOUND EXPERIENCE

IImagine watching an action-packed movie and hearing the subtle rustle of leaves behind you or feeling the rumble of explosions reverberating throughout the room. With surround sound, every sound effect, dialogue, and musical score is rendered with precision and clarity, transporting viewers into the heart of the action.

Upgraded sound systems enhance the emotional impact of storytelling by immersing viewers in the audio landscape of the narrative. Whether it’s the whisper of a character’s voice or the crescendo of a dramatic soundtrack, surround sound elevates the viewing experience by evoking a deeper sense of immersion and engagement.

When Ken Gorman and Alan Weissman met 25 years ago, they became fast friends. In 2021, they founded AVision Design Group and set out to make homeowners’ entertainment experiences dynamic.

In addition to installing the necessary equipment and hiding the wires, they also analyze and guide homeowners on the best choices for their needs, and teach them how to use the audio/visual systems.

“We can transform any house into a smart home, incorporate an elevated music system throughout the house and convert any room in your home into a home theater,” says Alan. “It all comes down to simplicity. Nowadays you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a tremendous viewing and sound experience.”

“Our main goal is to provide innovative and best-in-class technology solutions that are simple to use, regardless of project size or scope. Whether that is just a soundbar below the TV, or a full-blown surround sound system with speakers, a subwoofer and a receiver that will give them the true theater-like experience with every movie that they watch.”

He says if you get a Sonos® soundbar mounted below the TV, you’ll have the best of both worlds – much better TV sound and the dual functionality of music.

“Our clients have been extremely happy with our work,” says Ken. “We pride ourselves on perfection.” Adds Alan, “Service is at the heart of our culture and we work hard every day to live up to it. We want our clients to have the best experience possible throughout the entire process.”

DDurability is key when it comes to outdoor furniture. You want something that can withstand the elements and be used daily without falling apart. Three popular options for patio furniture are cast aluminum, rattan, and resin.

Cast aluminum patio furniture is durable, rust-resistant, and lightweight. It can withstand extreme temperatures and weather conditions, making it a top choice for outdoor spaces. Cast aluminum patio furniture comes in many designs, from dining sets to conversation sets, often featuring decorative elements like scrolling or latticework.

Rattan, also known as wicker, is made from a type of palm tree known for its strength and flexibility. The natural fibers of rattan are woven together to create solid, sturdy

furniture that can withstand the elements and daily use. Rattan is also lightweight, making it easy to move around and rearrange your patio furniture as needed. Resin patio furniture is made from a strong, synthetic material that is weather-resistant and requires minimal maintenance. It is resistant to fading and chipping and comes in various colors and textures.

Resin patio furniture is available in many styles, from traditional to contemporary, and can be cushioned for added comfort.

When it comes to choosing the most durable option for your outdoor space, it depends on your lifestyle and preferences. Consider each material’s style, weight, and maintenance, and choose the one that best suits your needs. With a little research and careful consideration, you can find the perfect patio furniture that will provide years of enjoyment in your outdoor space.

Create a Stunning Deer-Proof Landscape with CLC’s Advice for Deer-Resistant Plants and Shrubs

GGreat designs begin with great ideas. At CLC Landscape Design, Rich Cording, owner and landscape architect, and his two sons, Rich Jr., a construction layout expert, and Eric, a sales professional, are the core employees. As the winner of nine major landscaping awards in New Jersey in 2023, CLC Landscape Design is ready to make your landscaping dreams come true.

One of the biggest concerns of area residents is deer trafficking in their Northern New Jersey residential areas. Maintaining beautiful plants and shrubs with the heavy deer population is a challenge. Known for his expertise in creating attractive, colorful, and lasting splashes of color all year, Rich Jr. has extensive experience and education with

Catmint and

deer-resistant plants and shrubs. What are some of these shrubs and plants that fulfill these objects?

Shade trees are usually not problematic if they have high branches the deer cannot reach. Cherry trees, such as pink flair cherries, not only provide color but also safety from deer. They offer a deep orange/ red color in the fall, and because they bloom later in the year, they avoid frost damage by flowering later than most plants. These are just some of the reasons why they are a great choice for your landscape.

Evergreen shrubs are also deer-repellent. Boxwood, a resilient and beautiful shrub, fairs well in the Northern New Jersey climate, and Skip Laurel shrubs maintain glossy green leaves year-round, adding a

touch of elegance to your landscape. The Gold-thread Cyprus, with its vibrant and ever-present color, is a true showstopper, providing beauty and interest throughout the year.

CLC Landscape Design uses its artist’s palate of colors to create beautiful and lasting foliage on residual properties. Pictures are magnificent, deer-resistant plants and shrubs that provide year-round enjoyment.

RAIN BARRELS

An Eco-Friendly Solution for Your Garden

A rain barrel is an excellent choice if you’re looking for an affordable and sustainable way to water your garden. These barrels are designed to collect and store rainwater that falls on your roof and can hold up to 50 gallons of water. This means you’ll have a ready supply of water to use on your plants and lawn during dry spells without relying on expensive municipal water sources.

Rainwater collected in a barrel is a natural, chemical-free alternative to tap water. This makes it a healthier choice for your plants and the environment. By reducing your reliance on municipal sources, you’re conserving water and contributing to a healthier ecosystem, thereby reducing your carbon footprint.

Using a rain barrel is also incredibly easy. Attach the barrel to your downspout and let the rainwater flow in. Most rain barrels come with a tap or hose attachment, making watering your garden easy whenever needed. And because the water is stored in a covered barrel, you can rest assured mosquitoes or other pests are not breeding in the water.

A rain barrel is an affordable, eco-friendly, and convenient way to water your garden. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting a rain barrel can help you achieve a lush and healthy garden.

Window Works is Transforming Outdoor Living

AAs the weather warms up, thoughts naturally drift to spending time outdoors. Window Works offers an array of solutions for transforming outdoor spaces into comfortable retreats. Suburban Essex recently spoke with JC Rocha, Window Works’ awning and window treatment specialist, to uncover the benefits of their products.

Q: What should people consider this spring and summer regarding awnings, louvered roofs, pergola roofs, and exterior screens?

A: Now is an ideal time to think about adding shade and protection to outdoor spaces. Awnings provide relief from the sun, while louvered and pergola roofs offer customizable shade and weather protection. Exterior screens are also useful for blocking out the sun and insects during outdoor gatherings.

Q: What advantages do retractable awnings offer?

A: Retractable awnings instantly provide shade, extending the outdoor space’s use, protecting from harmful UV rays, and preventing furniture fading. They can reduce indoor cooling bills by blocking sunlight and add value and curb appeal to homes.

Q: How do pergola awnings enhance outdoor areas?

A: Pergola awnings are a versatile outdoor solution, offering immediate shade and enhancing the usability of outdoor spaces. They create a comfortable outdoor room, define specific areas within a pergola, and provide protection from the sun and rain.

Q: What are the benefits of exterior screens?

A: Exterior screens provide privacy while maintaining visibility and reduce glare, making outdoor spaces more comfortable and enjoyable.

Q: What features and benefits do louvered roofs provide?

A: Louvered roofs offer durability, versatility, and instant outdoor living space creation. Louvers can adjust sunlight and shade, protect from rain, and withstand high winds and heavy snow loads. They are rust-proof and customizable with features like fans and lighting, enhancing comfort and usability.

Q: In summary, what should people keep in mind when considering outdoor upgrades for spring and summer?

A: Now is the perfect time to schedule installations of these products to ensure they’re in place for the warmer months ahead. Planning ahead allows for ample time to select the right products, schedule installation, and enjoy the benefits of shade, comfort, and style as soon as the weather permits.

Choosing the Right Wedding Favors for Your Guests

CChoosing wedding favors can be a fun and exciting part of wedding planning. You want your guests to appreciate and use the favors you give them, so consider their tastes and preferences.

When considering wedding favors, it’s important to align them with your wedding theme and style. This not only adds to the aesthetic appeal of your wedding but also makes the favors more memorable. For instance, if you’re having a beach wedding, consider giving out personalized sunglasses or beach towels.

Practical wedding favors such as bottle openers or keychains are always a hit with guests. They’re something guests can use daily and will remind them of your special day. Thank you pads are also a thoughtful and practical wedding favor that your guests will surely appreciate.

Personalized wedding favors are a great way to make your guests feel special. Consider adding your names or wedding date to the favors for a personal touch.

Be Prepared to Save a Life by Learning CPR

CCardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving skill that, with the right training, anyone can learn. It’s not as complex as it may seem. CPR involves a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths to help maintain blood flow and oxygenation to the body’s vital organs, such as the brain and heart. When someone experiences cardiac arrest, which is when the heart suddenly stops beating, performing CPR immediately can significantly increase their chances of survival.

CPR is a critical skill that can be used in a variety of emergencies, including heart attacks, drownings, and choking incidents. The American Heart Association estimates that over 350,000 cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals each year in the United States, and only about 10% of those individuals survive. However, when CPR is performed immediately, the chances of survival can increase by two or three times.

Learning CPR is a valuable life skill that can make a significant difference in an emergency. You can save a life by being prepared and knowing what to do.

Walking Should Be a Regular Part of Your Routine

Walking is a great way to get exercise, clear your mind, and enjoy the outdoors.   Setting a walking goal can help motivate you to get moving. Maybe you want to walk a certain number of steps each day or work up to walking a certain distance. Having a goal in mind gives you something to work towards and helps you track your progress.

Walking with a friend can transform the experience into a joyous adventure, keeping you both accountable and entertained. Engaging in a lively conversation can make the time fly by. If your walking route is starting to feel monotonous, why not switch it up? Explore a new neighborhood or park, or discover a hiking trail. The thrill of exploring new surroundings can inject a fresh sense of excitement into your walking routine.

Listening to your favorite music or a podcast can make walking more enjoyable. Joining a walking group is a great way to meet new people and stay motivated.

The more you walk, the easier it will become. Try to make walking a daily habit, even if it’s just for a short amount of time. Soon enough, walking will become second nature.  Walking is a great way to improve your physical and mental health. With some inspiration and motivation, you can make walking a regular part of your routine.

SANA YOGA Embraces Diversity and Healing

AA yoga studio where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and free to be themselves is what Viviana Gonzalez set out to create when she founded Sana Yoga in New Providence. Drawing on her initial yoga experience of not fitting in, “I was holding back from being fully authentic,” she said. She opened a studio for “all body types, all ethnicities, where when you walk in, you feel seen.”

Sana Yoga is a unique space, heated with infrared, that offers a diverse range of classes to cater to various preferences and needs. These include A-Sana Power, a high-intensity class taught in 98-100 degrees; Sana Flow, a slower-paced class for those seeking a more relaxed experience; Sana Sculpt, a class that uses weights to focus on musculature; and non-heated Yin ’Sana, a class that uses longer holds in gentle poses to relax and restore the body.

“Yoga doesn’t have to be so serious; it isn’t a competition with others. You can come as you are and leave with something greater each time you step onto your mat,” Viviana said. “To heal, we must feel.”

Sana Yoga instructors are encouraged to learn students’ names and to teach their classes in ways that feel true to them— no cookie-cutter yoga. Viviana believes in using music and puts thought into creating class playlists.

New students can take advantage of a $29 one-week unlimited trial package to

explore what class or classes are suitable for them. Specialty workshops offer different combinations with yoga, such as May’s upcoming “Yin’ n Wine.”

“We create community, using a healing practice that allows us to release trauma and shift past obstacles so that we can embrace the present fully,” said Viviana.

Discover the Healing Power of Manual Lymph Drainage Massage

PProvidence Health and Fitness is a fullservice fitness and wellness center that offers the latest and trendiest programs. Its mission is to help you discover your best self by providing personalized wellness for your body, mind, and spirit.

We firmly believe that a comprehensive fitness and health routine is the key to continual strength and flexibility improvement, without hitting a plateau. This approach not only promotes longevity but also combats inflammation, inspiring you to reach new heights in your wellness journey.

At Providence Health and Fitness, their expertise lies in the field of massages. Whether you’re dealing with a chronic injury, are a sports enthusiast with tight muscles, or simply need a moment of relaxation, their massages are the perfect solution. Their therapists are highly skilled and experienced, ready to assist you in your recovery from long COVID symptoms, surgery, or in

boosting your immune system with the Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) massage.

Your lymphatic system is responsible for eliminating extracellular debris and toxins from the body. MLD is a form of massage that helps speed up lymph function and recovery from surgery, injury, or illness. Their therapists use a very light touch modality to work with lymphatic flow, decrease swelling, and purify the body. Studies have confirmed that MLD and deep tissue massage can resolve postoperative swelling and fibrosis in at least six weeks to three months, significantly shortening recovery time.

A 50-minute MLD session can speed up lymph draining by a factor of 10-12 times, reducing swelling, bruising, scar tissue, and pain. It can also speed up healing time after surgery, especially reconstructive. Typically, five MLD sessions before and after surgery are recommended.

MLD is also an excellent natural approach for shedding extra fluid weight, minimizing cellulite, and boosting immune health. Their licensed MLD therapists are trained to assist you with this ground-breaking modality. Additionally, MLD is heralded for encouraging optimum health, beauty, peak performance, and rapid recovery.

Besides massage therapy, Providence offers individualized personal training on the Stott Pilates Reformers and the GYROTONIC® Expansion System. New to these methods of exercise? Check out Providence’s website www. providencehalthandfitness.com or call 908-808-0008 or text 973-699-5255 and make an appointment to find out more. Beauty That’s Skin Deep Make Your Body Glow

BBeneath the Surface Spa, which has been in Madison for 13 years, was voted among the best spas in New Jersey for 2023. Owner Marcia Mehrali is proud of this designation, especially since she never planned on owning her own spa.

“When I became an esthetician, I started my business in the back of a hair salon in Millburn,” she says, “My clients were always pushing me to grow my business and one found a place for me in Madison. I took it.”

Marcia believes the day spa stands out for a number of reasons. “The atmosphere is friendly – we’re very down to earth. Clients get to know us first before we just dive in. We make them feel comfortable and there’s always a conversation. If they don’t want one service, then we try another. We get results from the treatments, which is most important.”

She enjoys helping clients with their skin and body concerns, and continues to work with them to provide the right treatments and products for their individual needs. “We want to do what they feel is good for them,” says Marcia. “And, we try to do things on the natural side, even with wrinkles and fine lines.”

One of the ways Beneath the Surface Spa does this is through its Signature Facial. “We do a great exfoliation and really clean your skin out. When your skin is really clean, you see a big difference. It’s like a glow.”

Another treatment that clients often request is microchanneling, which stimulates the body to generate new, healthy skin. Facials and supplements promoting collagen production are also a huge part of the spa’s philosophy. There are a number of other effective treatments along with highend skincare lines and products as well.

“We’re trying to age everyone gracefully,” says Marcia.

The Barth’s Difference

FFor over 50 years, Barth’s Market has proudly served five generations of Frank and Penny Bolden’s family: from Mrs. Bolden’s mother to the Boldens, their children, grandchildren, and now their great-grandson. As the daughter of smallbusiness owners, Mrs. Bolden grew up shopping locally. “I was not allowed to shop in supermarkets or department stores,” she recounted. So, when she moved to the New Providence area with her own family, she sought the best butcher in town and has been shopping at Barth’s ever since. When summing up her expectation of shopping locally, Mrs. Bolden says, “Barth’s has given me all that and more in terms of service and quality.”

Barth’s has given me all that and more in terms of service and quality.

What used to be her “butcher shop” is now her “one-stop shop” where she can buy top-quality meat, seafood, and produce, and at 80 years old, Mrs. Bolden really appreciates that convenience. She says that Jim Barth has taken every kind of special meat order for her – even grinding meat and ordering cases of turkey necks for her dogs. But beyond service and product selection, the couple’s favorite thing about Barth’s is the end product. The personalized service they receive at Barth’s makes them feel valued and important, a feeling that is hard to find in larger supermarkets.

– MRS. BOLDEN

The Boldens have several favorite “Why Barth’s” stories. Mr. Bolden says there is a “WOW factor” at Barth’s. For example, the Boldens lived in Germany as part of Mr. Bolden’s active duty in the US Army. When their family returned to the States, they were thrilled to find Stollen, Spaetzle, and other authentic German specialty items at Barth’s. Mrs. Bolden also recalled how, as a teenager, Jim Barth delivered meat to her home. When he took over the family business, he continued serving her family personally and caringly. While some of her other favorite local shops shuttered their doors in the last few years, Jim Barth has helped the store evolve to meet current customer needs.

Penny believes that her passion for cooking and Barth’s fresh, highquality ingredients are the secret to her success in the kitchen. “Penny is a wonderful cook,” says Frank. Every Sunday, the Boldens host 8 to 22 people for Sunday dinner. Penny always says, “That’s Barth’s, “whenever people rave about her cooking.”

ONE COHESIVE PLAN

OThis month I had the pleasure to sit down and speak with Richard Davis, President and CEO of Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. What I enjoyed about our conversation was a sincere effort by the hospital to really want the community to live a healthy lifestyle, so they do not have to endure some of the treatments that they have. In addition, their focus on listening to the community to help shape what they build and how they deliver care helps them partner with other community members and groups to deliver specialized patient care and more.

Barry Farber: Tell me about the new, free-standing Cancer Center being built on the hospital campus and how it came about.

Richard Davis: Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center has a long-standing reputation as a regional leader in cancer care. As we looked at the demographics for NJ, we unfortunately saw that the incident rate of cancer is predicted to escalate over the next 10 to 20 years. And, in working with our community and patient population to understand their needs and desires, we said to ourselves that we want to provide patient-centered and research-driven cancer care from some of the region’s top oncologists to help our community now and into the future.

BF: How did the planning and structure of the new Cancer Center take place with all the technology involved?

RD: We believe that the best thing for our patients is providing access to all our oncology services under one roof. That includes our medical, radiation, and surgical oncology teams. In talking with clinicians and patients, it was clear

that the best way to treat a cancer patient is to bring all our clinicians together with a patient and really map out their plan of care based on their particular type of cancer.

Then, we asked ourselves, what technology would we need to develop a comprehensive view of what the best plan of care is for a patient? As a result, the new Cancer Center will have a full array of imaging, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, etc., a pharmacy, a lab, and the latest linear accelerator technology. To support a healing environment, we also have a beautiful outdoor terrace and a whole host of psychosocial and holistic support services.

BF: What differentiates this cancer center from any other places around the state and the U.S.?

RD: Beyond providing easy access to comprehensive cancer care under one roof, the other unique distinction is that through our partnership with RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only comprehensive National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, we can offer our patients access to the most advanced treatment options including clinical trials.

BF: Do you have any programs that address how important food and diet is for building a strong immune system so that we can prevent or deal with some of the cancer that we’re seeing that’s so prevalent today? I know there are so many studies including the China study that looks at how changing your diet from meat and dairy to a Whole Foods plant-based program has a huge impact on our health. Is there anything you’re doing to address that?

RD: Sure. As part of our prevention efforts, we work with the community to provide education on the risks of cancer and a healthy lifestyle. A recent program focused on the link between alcohol and cancer. At “Strollin’ Through the Colon,” people could actually walk through an inflatable, 20-foot replica of the human colon to learn about polyps and the importance of colon cancer screening to reduce your risk for cancer.

Within our health system, we are working to advance innovative strategies in high-quality patient care, education, and research to address both the clinical and social determinants of health. In doing so, there are certainly economic issues to deal with, so our system is doing several things to help folks find better housing and make sure they are eating the proper diet.

The new Cancer Center will include a kitchen where patients can work with a chef to learn about different types of nutritional, healthy meals that they can easily prepare.

BF: Once the Cancer Center opens, what would some of the accomplishments and goals be like that would satisfy you that it’s become a success?

RD: We are looking to hear that our patients and their families feel they are being cared for in a compassionate, seamless fashion. That in talking with all their providers that they together are creating one cohesive plan of care in which they feel supported through every step of their cancer journey.
