into Record Fair Success

Jennifer Klein and Charles Maggio, both hailing from bands of the past (Green Dragon for her and Rorschach for him), have used their shared passion for music to create Elusive Sounds, a nonprofit that runs the Maplewood Record Fair. Started in 2019 and held biannually, this June marks the eighth incarnation of the fair.

It transcends commerce, serving as a hub where music enthusiasts converge to share stories and revel in nostalgia. The fair features around 45 tables filled with records, CDs, cassettes, 8-tracks, amplifiers, stereo equipment, comic books, music memorabilia, posters, vintage band T-shirts, and more. With admission set at $3 (free for those under 18) and $6 for early birds, as well as vegan and vegetarian fare, it’s an affordable day out for the whole family.

Mark your calendars for June 2nd, and November 10th, from 10 am to 4 pm, at The Woodland at 60 Woodland Road in Maplewood, and immerse yourself in the excitement of the fair.

Crafting Compassion: How One Library Program is Bringing Joy to Seniors and Shelter Dogs

Lori Mattheiss is an inspiring figure of warmth and creativity at the Madison Public Library, where she works in programming and community engagement. She leads craft classes that ignite the creativity of library patrons and seniors, fostering a sense of accomplishment and joy.

providing care to stray, abandoned, surrendered, and at-risk shelter dogs helping them find loving, permanent homes. She then orchestrated a heartwarming visit, bringing five of the dogs to meet the seniors. The joy was palpable as the seniors wrapped the dogs in blankets, sharing cuddles and companionship.

Through her simple acts of kindness and boundless creativity, Lori illustrates how a ripple of positivity can transform a community.

Thriving Boy Scout Troop is Building Character and Community

Chatham Boy Scout Troop 8, led by Scoutmaster Branimir Cvetkovic, is a symbol of adventure, leadership, and service. With 82 boys, this troop is one of the largest in the area, offering a dynamic and enriching experience for its members.

At the core of the troop’s activities are various service projects supporting the local Chatham community, monthly campouts, and days-long high adventure trips around the Northeast region, as well as to New Mexico and Florida.

Recently, Sawyer A. Shaw, Thaddeus Kobylarz III, AJ George, and Charley A. Baird-Hassell attained the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Achieving this rank is no small feat; it requires dedication, hard work, and a strong sense of community service, as exemplified by these new Eagle Scouts’ endeavors: renovating the 9/11 Memorial in downtown Chatham, rebuilding a school trail, constructing a shed for a food pantry, and creating a storage unit for a performing arts club. Fostering Healing Through Storytelling: The Journey of Vulnerable Narratives

Sonia Patricia Moran, a recent transplant from Summit to Morristown, has established a sanctuary for vulnerable individuals to share their truths through an interactive open mic format. Her initiative, the Vulnerable Narratives Project, fosters empowerment, healing, and enlightenment within a supportive community. Moran, a multidisciplinary designer with a focus on architecture, industrial design, and woodworking, considers herself a guardian of positive energy and a catalyst for empowerment and support.

Participants engage in monthly themes, submitting written pieces for review and potential inclusion in the program. Monthly gatherings at Bear Minimum, a sustainability-focused store in Boonton, provide a platform for sharing deeply personal stories on topics such as betrayal, trust, authenticity, and overcoming life struggles

and transitions, among other important topics.

Operating on donations and collaborating with local organizations such as Life Center Stage and the Community in Crisis, the project aims to expand to new venues and establish additional chapters.

Celebrating 56 Harmonious Years with the Hickory Tree Chorus!

Marking its 56th anniversary this year, the awardwinning Stirling-based Hickory Tree Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, has been enchanting audiences with beautiful a capella harmonies and impressive performances since 1968. With 31 active members from New Jersey and New York, the chorus entertains local audiences at their annual show and other local and private events. Their repertoire spans decades of popular American music, including classics from the 20’s and 30’s, the Beatles and Broadway hits, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The chorus also competes annually and their commitment to quality and passion for performance has earned them great success. Under the leadership of long-time director Carolyn Schmidt of Gillette, Hickory Tree earned the Small Chorus championship in their most recent regional competition.

Exploring Mental Health Through Art

BBrittany Coburn’s art is a testament to the power of creativity in addressing mental health challenges. Through interactive sculptures, the Summit native invites viewers to touch and interact with her work, creating a unique and engaging experience that fosters understanding and empathy.

Brittany’s journey with mental health and art began in college, where she witnessed friends struggle with drug abuse and mental health issues. These experiences, coupled with her own battles, inspired her to use art as a platform for conversation and healing.

“I’m an artist, and nobody gets to tell me what I can and can’t talk about with my work,” Brittany explains. “This is a conversation that really has to be had.”

Her sculptures often feature imagery of pills and mouths, symbolizing the complexities of mental health. Bright colors and inviting designs challenge the stigma surrounding medication, encouraging viewers to embrace these tools for healing.

One of Brittany’s most successful series is the “Pill Piles,” which consists of familiarly colored pills attached together with mechanisms like lazy Susans. Viewers are encouraged to spin the pills, changing their shapes and creating dynamic shadows.

“The interactive element gives you a much deeper connection to the work,” Brittany notes. “It helps you think more deeply and creatively about these ideas.”

Brittany’s “Vices” series further explores the impact of vices on mental health. This series features brightly colored mouths, each containing a different vice, such as cigarettes, joints, pills, and other indulgences. Through these sculptures, Brittany challenges viewers to consider their own vices and their effects on mental well-being.

“I think a lot of people see vices as guilty pleasures, but for many, they can be a downfall,” Brittany explains. “It’s all about how the viewer experiences it and what resonates with them.”

Brittany’s art has sparked conversations and raised funds for mental health causes. For her thesis show, she partnered with the nonprofit organization Brain Change

to Mind, donating 100% of the proceeds from the artwork to the cause.

“I don’t love the idea of art for art’s sake,” Brittany says. “I think art has the power to inform society and foster change.”

Currently, Brittany is expanding her work and experimenting with new techniques. She recently sold a significant portion of her “Pill Piles” to the permanent collection at the Savannah College of Art Design to be installed on the Atlanta campus. She is also collaborating with the nonprofit Deirdre’s House in Morristown to develop art workshops that offer clients a creative outlet for healing and expression.

Brittany’s art powerfully reminds us of the importance of addressing mental health and promoting positive conversations. Through her work, she is raising awareness and creating a space for healing and understanding.

Turning Grief into Good: The Story of a Book Making a Difference

MMaplewood resident Kelly McKesten’s book, “The ABCs of Swimming,” is making waves not just as a children’s educational tool but as a powerful force for good. Inspired by her late father, Joe McEvoy, a college swim coach and aquatics director, Kelly began writing the book in 1993 at the age of 10 with her dad. Joe had already authored two books about fitness swimming, and he saw an opportunity for them to collaborate on a children’s book about swimming and water safety. Although Joe passed away before they could finish the book together, Kelly held onto their dream.

“We started keeping a notebook with our ideas,” Kelly recalls. “He knew all the swimming terminology, and I loved drawing pictures in the margins.” Tragically, Joe passed away later that year, leaving their book unfinished. However, the notebook became a cherished keepsake for Kelly, a reminder of their shared passion.

During the pandemic, with newfound time and determination, Kelly completed the manuscript and connected with illustrator Maddie Schwimmer. Launched last May for Water Safety Awareness Month, “The ABCs of Swimming” is more than just a children’s book; it’s a tribute to Joe McEvoy’s legacy and a tool for water safety education. The book covers swimming terminology from A to Z in a rhyming structure, making it engaging and educational for young readers. It also includes water safety tips for kids, helping them stay safe around water.

What sets this book apart is its impact beyond its pages. Kelly has partnered with the USA Swimming Foundation, donating $1 from every book sale to provide swim lessons to those in need. Through her book and fundraising efforts, Kelly has raised over $10,000 for the foundation, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.

Kelly’s journey embodies the transformation of grief into a force for good, a testament to the power of perseverance, love, and community. Influenced by her mother’s response to her father’s passing through fundraising, Kelly’s commitment to giving back and sharing with others has shaped her life. This ethos is exemplified by her annual silent auction event, which has grown from a small gathering at her house into a large-scale event with over 250 attendees at a local restaurant. All proceeds benefit the foundation.

“The ABCs of Swimming” stands not just as a book but as a fulfilled legacy and a tribute to Kelly’s father’s passion for swimming. Through her experience, Kelly has made a meaningful difference, with the money raised from book sales providing swim lessons and water safety education to those in need.

All ages 8 to 18 are invited to audition for a spot in the Chatham Community Players’ Summer Youth Theater Company, a five-week program culminating in a production of “Seussical, Jr.” in August. The program offers training and performance opportunities, with rehearsals running Monday through Friday from July 8th to August 9th and performances on August 10th and 11th.

All roles are open. Those auditioning should prepare an ageappropriate song from a Broadway show and bring sheet music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided, and songs from the show are permitted. Auditioners can sing with a track if preferred but must bring a device to play it. Photos and resumes are welcome but not required. Auditions will open for specific roles in the production during the first week of the program as part of a workshop aimed at helping students develop their audition skills.

In addition, we are offering production internships for high school and college-age students who are interested in directing, costume/set/lighting design, stage management, and marketing/front of the house. These internships provide a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional theater

When someone experiences cardiac arrest, which is when the heart suddenly stops beating, performing CPR immediately can significantly increase their chances of survival.

CPR is a critical skill that can be used in a variety of emergencies, including heart attacks, drownings, and choking incidents. The American Heart Association estimates that over 350,000 cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals each year in the United States, and only about 10% of those individuals survive. However, when CPR is performed immediately, the chances of survival can increase by two or three times.

Drawing on her initial yoga experience of not fitting in, “I was holding back from being fully authentic,” she said. The Barth’s Difference

FFor over 50 years, Barth’s Market has proudly served five generations of Frank and Penny Bolden’s family: from Mrs. Bolden’s mother to the Boldens, their children, grandchildren, and now their great-grandson. The Boldens have several favorite “Why Barth’s” stories. Mr. Bolden says there is a “WOW factor” at Barth’s. For example, the Boldens lived in Germany as part of Mr. Bolden’s active duty in the US Army. When their family returned to the States, they were thrilled to find Stollen, Spaetzle, and other authentic German specialty items at Barth’s. Mrs. Bolden also recalled how, as a teenager, Jim Barth delivered meat to her home. When he took over the family business, he continued serving her family personally and caringly. While some of her other favorite local shops shuttered their doors in the last few years, Jim Barth has helped the store evolve to meet current customer needs.

Penny believes that her passion for cooking and Barth’s fresh, highquality ingredients are the secret to her success in the kitchen. “Penny is a wonderful cook,” says Frank. Every Sunday, the Boldens host 8 to 22 people for Sunday dinner. Penny always says, “That’s Barth’s, “whenever people rave about her cooking.”

ONE COHESIVE PLAN

OThis month I had the pleasure to sit down and speak with Richard Davis, President and CEO of Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. What I enjoyed about our conversation was a sincere effort by the hospital to really want the community to live a healthy lifestyle, so they do not have to endure some of the treatments that they have. In addition, their focus on listening to the community to help shape what they build and how they deliver care helps them partner with other community members and groups to deliver specialized patient care and more.

Barry Farber: Tell me about the new, free-standing Cancer Center being built on the hospital campus and how it came about.

Richard Davis: Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center has a long-standing reputation as a regional leader in cancer care. As we looked at the demographics for NJ, we unfortunately saw that the incident rate of cancer is predicted to escalate over the next 10 to 20 years. And, in working with our community and patient population to understand their needs and desires, we said to ourselves that we want to provide patient-centered and research-driven cancer care from some of the region’s top oncologists to help our community now and into the future.

BF: How did the planning and structure of the new Cancer Center take place with all the technology involved?

RD: We believe that the best thing for our patients is providing access to all our oncology services under one roof. That includes our medical, radiation, and surgical oncology teams. In talking with clinicians and patients, it was clear

that the best way to treat a cancer patient is to bring all our clinicians together with a patient and really map out their plan of care based on their particular type of cancer.

Then, we asked ourselves, what technology would we need to develop a comprehensive view of what the best plan of care is for a patient? As a result, the new Cancer Center will have a full array of imaging, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, etc., a pharmacy, a lab, and the latest linear accelerator technology. To support a healing environment, we also have a beautiful outdoor terrace and a whole host of psychosocial and holistic support services.

BF: What differentiates this cancer center from any other places around the state and the U.S.?

RD: Beyond providing easy access to comprehensive cancer care under one roof, the other unique distinction is that through our partnership with RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only comprehensive National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, we can offer our patients access to the most advanced treatment options including clinical trials.

BF: Do you have any programs that address how important food and diet is for building a strong immune system so that we can prevent or deal with some of the cancer that we’re seeing that’s so prevalent today? I know there are so many studies including the China study that looks at how changing your diet from meat and dairy to a Whole Foods plant-based program has a huge impact on our health. Is there anything you’re doing to address that?

RD: Sure. As part of our prevention efforts, we work with the community to provide education on the risks of cancer and a healthy lifestyle. A recent program focused on the link between alcohol and cancer. At “Strollin’ Through the Colon,” people could actually walk through an inflatable, 20-foot replica of the human colon to learn about polyps and the importance of colon cancer screening to reduce your risk for cancer.

Within our health system, we are working to advance innovative strategies in high-quality patient care, education, and research to address both the clinical and social determinants of health. In doing so, there are certainly economic issues to deal with, so our system is doing several things to help folks find better housing and make sure they are eating the proper diet.

The new Cancer Center will include a kitchen where patients can work with a chef to learn about different types of nutritional, healthy meals that they can easily prepare.

BF: Once the Cancer Center opens, what would some of the accomplishments and goals be like that would satisfy you that it’s become a success?

RD: We are looking to hear that our patients and their families feel they are being cared for in a compassionate, seamless fashion. That in talking with all their providers that they together are creating one cohesive plan of care in which they feel supported through every step of their cancer journey.
